Clemson runs away from NC State, 80-54 in ACC quarterfinal
"Number 13 Virginia advanced to the semifinals of the ACC tournament with a 68 59 win over North Carolina. UVA finished the game on a 13 to four run for Jaden Gardner was proud as teen held on late. UNC made a lot of runs, especially at the end of the first half, but RJ Davis got going a little bit, but he was able to respond. "PA Clark scored 18 points and third ranked Virginia earned its 15th straight ACC opening win by downing Florida state, 62 57. "Trivia time, can you name all 5? All right. Duke Carolina, Miami, Notre-Dame, Virginia tech. It was very good, that's exactly what it was. But only 5, right now, Jerry palm has 7 ACC teams projected to make the 2023 in C++. It is the same 5 North Carolina duke, Miami, Virginia tech Notre-Dame plus two more. I'm going to go based off of my standings. So I will say he has Virginia. That's right. And then I'm going to say, according to my projection, I'll say he has Florida state. That's right. It's North Carolina as a one seat, duke is a three Virginia 7, Miami is an 8 Virginia tech as an 8 Florida state as an 11. Notre-Dame as an 11. So the conference moving back in the right direction. But do you realize the ACC finished at Ken pom 5th in conferences last season for the second straight year? Didn't finish lower than fourth in any of the previous 7 seasons. And now it's been 5th in two straight seasons with duke Louisville Notre-Dame Miami, all missing the NCA tournament in 2021. And then Virginia, Florida state Syracuse Louisville, all missing the NCA tournament in 2022. Like Louisville, Virginia Syracuse have all won national titles in the past 20 years. Them not being good recently has been a real drag on the league. It's not as simple as that. But if somebody were to stop you on the street and ask you, so what's why is the ACC been down? Because Louisville has been down because Syracuse has been down because Virginia has at least been down relative to what Virginia was, each of the past two seasons. 5th is a problem. I don't know if it'll be at least for the ACC, which is obviously a traditional basketball first conference there. Would be shocked if this was a top two conference in the country that hasn't happened since 1718 per Ken pom. I think it could be anywhere from three to 5. I don't think it'll be as low as 6, but I will go if I set the over under at 6.5 NCAA tournament bids, I'm going to go under in 23 for the ACC. Would you go under over 6.5? Would you sag with palm or fade that a little bit? I would sign with palm. It's Jerry palm, crying out loud. How would I go? Give me, do you have your one through 7 in order? Standings projections. What you think? It would be North Carolina duke Virginia, I don't go any further than that at the top 25 one. I could see what I sent in. Why don't you pull up what you sent in? And I'll give you my one through 7. While he looks it up. I go, UNC duke, Virginia draw a line. I go Notre-Dame four, I'll go Miami 5, Florida state 6, Virginia tech 7. I think those are all viable contenders and then I'll get to the back half in a little bit here. But Virginia has to be a clear three speakman, Jaden Gardner, kihei Clark, cadence Cedric, armand Franklin all back. They get Ben van der plus in from Ohio. That's a one through 6 that I believe will have Virginia wearing home whites until at least the sweet 16 provided UNC I mean, UVA can win a couple of games in the NCAA's. Virginia lost no one of notes. So if beekman can jump to an all ACC first team level kind of guy Clark kind of is what he is at the stage of his career and that is a good thing specifically like four Virginia. He fits his role in Bennett's system and will be vital this season. I'm not even convinced I'd have Virginia third in this tier if key hit Clark wasn't on the roster. I think he's that important to the actual overall team there. Shedrick should be a bit of a more of a breakout on the defensive end. Jaden Gardner was 30 so you maybe he grows a little bit more. So to me, it's like duke and Carolina in Virginia all in the same group. If you wanted to separate Carolina from duke and Virginia to actually buy that there. So UNC duke UVA Notre-Dame Miami, Florida state, Virginia tech, my one through 7. What would you go on through Saturday? We got the same 7 just slightly different order. North Carolina duke, Virginia three, Miami four, Notre-Dame 5, Florida state 6, Virginia tech 7. Okay, so we've got Notre-Dame in Miami flipped. Why you go Miami four instead of instead of Notre-Dame there? Life wallet. Okay. Aside from the obvious with life wallet, they lost came augusti. They lost Charlie Moore, Sam waardenburg. Those guys combined for well over 30 points. So they depart, which made me pause just a little bit there. You bring back Isaiah Wong and you had Nigel pack. That's pretty good. Now, they're not very big. That could be a problem in a league with Armando begat and Derek lively. But, you know, I like the guards and lar neg is great. They lose Chris caputo too. They do. New head coach at George Washington. Yes. And I don't think that type of thing impacts this team, but you do wonder, because caputo is a hustler. Recruiter. Does that have an impact on Miami's program going forward? I think there's a chance. I mean, like we're way inside the sport here, but caputo is a long time assistant for laron ega was part of the George Mason final 14 and all that good stuff. And he had a significant impact on the success of that program right there alongside Lara nega. So that's something to keep in mind there. Isaiah Wong is back, by the way, just a reminder. Threatening to go into the transfer form. It really is an indication of how long the college basketball off season was GP. That was like the second or third week at the off season. He tried to publicly leverage his NIL situation. How successful that actually was? I guess is up for debate, but Nigel pack actually is the one who induced Wong's ploy. It was Illinois largest margin of victory in a Big Ten game since 2005. So Illinois has played 7 different starting lineups at this point in the season, and yet despite all that Kofi coburn, he's averaging 24 game that's third most in the country points per game between him and Utah, transfer Alonso plumber averaging 24 in the past four games, shooting almost 50% from three. It's not kerbel. It's intriguing. So Illinois at Iowa, I will come in off the loss there. That's actually a pretty it's a quality game on a Monday night that just doesn't have anything else. That's the only game worth watching. And then on Tuesday you've got the Jimmy V, I normally go, I will just there will not quite be enough this year to get me down. Not a great is not a great MVP. Let's be honest. It's just okay. And, you know, it's just, it's just, okay, so I'll be happy to watch. I'll be happy to watch from home. "Only two other schools, besides Virginia. Oh, Florida state UNC, sorry. Okay, so we're on. We're all in. Here's the point. Over the past 8 years, nobody has finished at the top of the ACC other than Virginia Florida state or North Carolina. So it should be unsurprising, I think that the pre season poll list the team that most people believe is gonna be the best team in the ACC. And that's most humans and computers. They both have duke, top of the ACC. Duke's tenth and both of those computers. So the top four in the ACC poll, it's duke. And the three schools that have won ACC titles in the past 8 years, Florida state, North Carolina, and Virginia. Florida state won an outright title in 2020, UNC won the outright in 2016 and 17 and then UNC shared it with UVA in 2019 and every other year is an outright Virginia is an outright Virginia regular season title. So I've got Virginia in my top 25 and one. I also have them forth in the ACC. But this is where you're really just trusting Tony Ben. I don't think it's dumb. But you're really just starting to bit it. He lost his top three scores. Sam Hauser, Jay Hoff, Trey Murphy. And he only brings back two players who averaged at least 8.6 minutes per game. Their preseason 45th at kin pop. It's tough. That's one of my 5 biggest storylines. So here's what I got. Coach K retirement. Hubert UNC will get to that in a minute. Number three, what I just mentioned, the league just not being elite. Talent pool collectively lower than it's been. Only headlining freshmen in this league is palo ban Caro. No one else, maybe we see a keels or a Griffin move in there, but not a lot of high level freshmen talent here. Number four Matthew Cleveland a Florida state. Yeah. He's a 5 star. He's a 5 star. I don't know if he'll wind up being more than the fourth most important player on that list. To your point, how about this? We had to turn in our ACC ballots earlier on the week. And it's like top three for player of the year, go to the air freshman of the year. And on freshman of the year, I went, Paula, and then I was like, okay, now what do I do? So I got you what you're saying. Here's what I had. I got a little spicy with it. Paulo, Benny Williams at Syracuse, because I think he'll wind up having the numbers. And then I actually went Trevor heels. That was my one, two, three. I thought about Cleveland, but I just don't know if he left the numbers there. But exactly. I went Ben Carole Cleveland Griffin, I think, something like that. Storyline four, and then 5 is going to be a Virginia. We can continue on that thread. You have Roy retire, K is going to retire. Who's next? Will we see laron egg at retire at the end of the season? Jim beheim is he going to continue to coach his kids and only his kids or is he going to retire? Is he going to continue on? Mike bray is nearing the end of his contract. I don't think he'll be retiring after this year. Although there is a thought that if Notre-Dame really stinks, maybe they sever ties at the end of the season. I don't think nobody's going to really stink. But the point is, another big storyline in the ACC this year is we're in the midst of some big changes. Not just a Hall of Fame legends, but some of the older established coaches that have been the final fours and done really good things in the tournament. We'll see on that. And then my 5th storyline is I have it right here. Well, Virginia have its worst team in almost a decade. I think from a talent perspective, if Virginia fans are really honest with themselves and look at this year's roster and compare it to basically every other roster since 12th, 2012, 2013 and on. I think this could be the least talented that Virginia has had. Now, if it wasn't, if it was this roster, and Tony Ben wasn't coaching Virginia, then I would have had UVA easily outside my top 40, but I give Tony Bennett, a whole hell of a lot of credit and the benefit of the doubt. I have UVA fourth, but that will be something to keep an eye on. Clark returns, he averaged 9.5 points and 4.5 assists last season. He's probably Virginia's best player. They do bring in Jaden Gardner who for his career the past three seasons at ECU. That's two straight podcasts, the east Carolina pirates have been discussed on the iron college basketball podcast. Can almost guarantee that will not happen again for the next ten years. Jane Gardner averaged 18 points and 8.7 boards with the pirates in a really respectable 23.1 PER according to college sports reference. So he's going to get his and then it's a matter of will it be speakman who averaged less than 5 points in 29 minutes a game last season. There's a lot to be discovered there with Virginia, but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. But to me, those are the 5 biggest storylines. Because Virginia almost always is, but this year, it's more, will this team again find a way? Are we going to look up, you know, three fourths of the way through the league season GP and see the Cavaliers like tied for first with two other teams, which won't stun us, but at the same time, I do think there's a real possibility that we could see the caps just wind up being 6 or 7 in the league. There was a time when Bill Ryan was still coaching at Wisconsin when I just slotted Wisconsin into the preseason top 25 and one every year because they were always one of the 26 best teams in the country. Regardless of whether it looked like they were going to be or not. It didn't matter who they were enrolling who they would bring them back. They were always good. And I just, I think.
