"They have to make a deal. A deal has to be coming It's becoming imperative. Where if i'm the yankees. There's two things that. I'm looking for Hopefully well before the trade deadline and those two things. I'm looking for a left handed pitcher because the yankees yankee stadium the way the way the ball plays there you're gonna need a A lefty in there as is. That's why the yankees have always been big on lefties. You know gigiri pettit. Whitey ford you know. Ccc data if you wanna get more reason these are the guys that the yankees have leaned on especially in the playoffs first decades you know at this point and You know you go back to lefty grove from way back in the day but when you look at The yankees as presently constructed. This doesn't look like coming into the season. I thought this was a team that really shy. I thought this was a team. That especially when when when luke voight was healthy and that lineup and everything i thought this was a team that really had a shot at dominating the american league east from wire-to-wire where you could really sit there and You know appreciate this team flexing. Its muscle year. Well doesn't like that's going to be the case. Especially with the way boston and tampa bay of played. Especially if the way the yankees have played against those two teams and once again yankees. Just leave a run around base last inning A guy that they traded to boston which is another trade. I didn't understand. They earned just a terrible play there by the yankees as they make big error and Boston ends up with a runner on second. So you know the yankees like they're trying to give this away but the guy that put a zero in the last for boston is a guy that used to wear number zero for the yankees and currently wears number zero for boston at amount of you know this is a guy. The yankees signed a couple of years ago. A big time relief contract is making upwards of nine million dollars a year the yankees. I guess because he He wasn't effective last year and had his problems in the playoffs to the yankees unloaded him to boston. As really a a salary cutting move and you know what to me you know. I can understand the wilpon. 's when they own the mets thank god they don't anymore but when the wilpon on the mets you can understand Cost cutting moves. He didn't like it. But you knew the state of the wilpons and their state of their finances so you pretty much knew it was coming and you made peace with it. The yankees to me. Why the yankees making cost cutting moves. I i know it's different this year too because every year every team is coming off You know a big money..

Reeling Rockies Swept in Doubleheader by Mets

"The injury hits. Just keep on coming for the mets noah. Syndergaard has been shut down for at least six weeks. The quote from luis rojas manager the sits big counting on being a month from now. This happening is tough. We pray he can pitch for us this year. I'm going to be talking with carl. Why i kinda wonder if that's even a possibility. And i'll explain why this is going to get really really complicated for all involved now. The mets have been ravaged by all these injuries lately but they had a great day on thursday. This was in game one first-pitch peraza to high drive deep to left top back near the wall. That bom jose peraza gets the mets won on their road. Maybe five today. A park homer off herrmann. Mark has and the mets take one. Nothing lead that from wcbs and one. Ron was all that marcus. Stroman and edwin d as needed strowman was outstanding. Played his position. "Well tim jacob degrom has also struggled with some injuries as of late he actually left. Both of his previous two starts with side tightness. So can you just give us an update on his injury status now so after a start against the red sox end of april he said that every pitcher is sore after a start but usually it gets better during the course of the four days in between and just didn't for him in his right side so he was scratched from start in saint. Louis took a couple of days off and then made a start against arizona over the weekend and left after five innings because that tightness had comeback in the side and into his back. now he's had issues with back tightness in the past. Usually it has been one of these one or to start things and so they're generally not that concern the is they've done have shown no real structural damage. Nothing to be too worried about at this point but of course when you miss a couple of star because of it and it crops up after you've given it a little bit of a break you'd probably be a little bit more cautious than next time through to make sure you've weeded out whatever's there so that he can be a full go the rest of the season well since two thousand eighteen. The first of a cy young seasons eighty percent of degrom starts have been quality starts and in those games as you have mentioned earlier. The mets have losing record and this year. He's giving up three earned runs in six starts and he's three and two well this absolutely historic lack of run support impact. His legacy in a way. It's funny it might become complimentary. Part of his legacy. People will remember. Jacob degrom the great pitcher who didn't get what he deserved. Because of the way the mets played behind him. I've studied this in the past and it's really like all aspects of the mets as a team fails jacob. Degrom is on the mound like their offense even in years when their offense is in. Great for other pitchers it's worse for jacob degrom even in years when their bullpen isn't very good for other pitchers it's worse for jacob. Degrom you know from two thousand eighteen through two thousand nineteen. The bullpen had an era over six and a half integral starts. So it's been incredible to watch. I would have said before. I saw this person that there had to be something. The pitcher himself was doing wrong if his team never won his starts but this is a three plus year stretch where ziara is below. Two and the mets are below five hundred when he starts and finally him. Do you think what is doing is kind of a one off or is this the future of pitchers and if it is more commonplace. Could this actually be a problem for baseball. That's an interesting question. Talked to glenn flies from the american sports medicine institute said. Do you want to analyze. Degrom see what he's doing instead of well. Of course everyone does but you know you make your decisions in baseball based off reams of data like a lot more pitchers than just one and i don't think jacob degrom has found a secret formula. I think it's probably a combination of his athleticism and his attention to mechanical detail. That helps him throw the way he does that. Being said you've got a lot. More pitchers raised and kind of grounded in the idea of efficient mechanics and throwing the ball a specific way to get the most out of their delivery. So i think that's the next wave. Graham is probably an outlier in his timing and in his age when he hits it. I think we'll see that next generation of pitchers tap into their velocities differently than this last one. And that's why major league baseball is thinking about things like moving the mound back. Maybe changing the shape of the strike zone and is trying to get more balls in. Play them you've seen in the last few years because there are so many strikeouts so many walks so many home runs the game looks markedly different than it used to. Thank you so much tim. It was great speaking with you about the ground and feature a baseball. Potentially thanks for having you can read tim. Britain story about jacob. Degrom listen to his podcast. "More. How can we get him to command his stuff. Simply deliver to be consistent. The arm slot release point has to be consensus. Is the baseball. It can come into baseball. You don't throw it where you intend to throw and you need all that other stuff just was staying back on the rubber kind of getting the ball out of his glove at a specific checkpoint getting the most out of his lower half is not a big guy like we talked about so he's got to get the most drive out of his legs so he's been able to do that. And even when degrom has a bad outing here and there or a bad inning. Even he'll talk about flying open and jumping off the mound. I kind of feel like almost jump like and that's my type flies open. So that's my main key trying not to do too much frontside when i tried to. If i get thinking about it then i i almost start doing too much whereas it's more like a relaxed and let it kind of fall in line which is kind of what he used to do. A little bit more often where you know that frontside as a pitcher starts opening up in his arm trails behind him. that's when he loses his command and loses the efficiency of his mechanics and doesn't throw his heart. My delivery feels really smooth. I think that. I feel like everything's on time and i feel like i'm staying within myself and for me. That's normally when it comes out better you know if i got out there and was actually trying to throw harder. It would probably actually be less. So what exactly is the ceiling year. Tim is degrom going to keep getting better and throwing harder in years to come. I thought it was funny. I asked him in spring training. You know last year in twenty twenty was win. The philosophy really jumped on a more consistent basis where he was averaging above ninety eight with his fastball routinely hitting one hundred and touching one zero two so i asked him. Can you do that for one. Hundred and sixty two game season or is that just kind of a sixty game thing and he just kind of shrugged off the questions. I think i'll be pretty close. You know just no problem. I talked to some people with dr line. In the american sports medicine institute but kind of like what's the ceiling here and we've seen guys were to maximize their philosophy across the sport. Kyle body with dr line and the cincinnati reds told me no this is one million outlier but somebody was going to do this eventually. Someone who's going to keep increasing their velocity as they got older. It just happened to be jacob degrom. I guess what i'm asking is. Have you already maxed out or is there still conceivably more. I guess we'll find. I honestly don't know.

Francisco Lindor: New Hope For Mets Fans?

"For a big splash. A big domino to tip over and the mlb off season and we got one yesterday. The new york. Mets acquired francisco lindores and carlos carrasco from the cleveland indians for two shortstops in two minor leaguers and enormous transaction. How surprised are you that this happened not surprised at all. Buster olney is the host of the baseball tonight partly cast and he has been covering baseball for more than three decades. Look the last few years there had been so much industry speculation about when would the indians trade lynn door. In fact a couple of years ago. Paul dolan their owner told that the fan base look. Enjoy while you can. Because it was an assumption he was going to be traded. I think if not for the pandemic he would have been traded in the middle of last summer so the indians move in now and the fact that the mets were the buyers. That's not surprising either. Because i think mets fans have been waiting for Steve owns team to to make a big move and he certainly did that. And getting the best shortstop in baseball. Yeah i want to ask you about the cleveland side of the equation in a little bit. But i i wanna dive into the buyer that you mentioned because steve cohn buster. The mets new owner hedge fund billionaire self identifying proudly so diehard mets fan from long island. He's been on twitter. I'll off season making very loud noises about this being a new different kind of organization. You know we want to be excellent in all areas of this game That's going to require resources. And i'm fully committed to making that happen. He is so monumentally. Wealthy i mean he was one of the few people who didn't lose money in this pandemic shortened twenty twenty season. So what does this tell you about the promise of his regime yeah. He's the richest owner in baseball. Now and i. I wrote a piece Free espn dot com. That for mets fans who have suffered through their. Ptsd of the wilpon. Yes this is that the finally they get their reward were they have an owner. Who's willing to go toe to toe with the yankees owner. Who bills a team. That has continued success. I don't just want to get into the playoffs. I want to win a championship. You know through the years. Since i've been working in the new york market the assumption whenever a really big name came up. Was that the yankees. Probably elbow the mets out of the way and they would get the players in the in. The mets would operate like an upper middle class team rather than a big market team and this deal signals a change in that. But what i do believe. Is this a major markelle tune during the should have a budget to measure with the yankees coulda used shortstop. There are other big market teams. That could use a shortstop. And the mets get the best shortstop so because you are a veteran of the new york market i need to know how is indoor going to help reshape. Just the identity of the team itself because i mean nolan reported future about him. We'll get to that a bit as well but just how good is he. What's potential here well. He's the perfect player for the mets right. Now he's an elite defensive shortstop smash back can't buy off-balance throw in recent years jacob. Degrom has been great. Despite the fact that mets have been really poor on defense. It's shorts especially they need more lineup. Ballots lindores a switch hitter. They could use more power drill door with law. Law door hits for power. They could use speed lindores does that. He looked like the road runner as he took off from first base and he absolutely has the personality to be the face of a franchise in new york. You talking about someone who loves to play is nicknamed mr. smile. Hangmen fans absolutely will gravitate toward him. Yeah

"Jacob. degrom the mets we all know Jacob degrom, but he was crash from his start on Friday. With a against the phillies with some next stiffness, he'll start his planning on starting against the marlins Miami and you know. I'm surprised actually pitching to be completely honest because. The season is pretty much I. Mean I guess that he would be. He would basically just be doing it so he could get paid at this point, but I mean he would get his prorated salary regardless if he was playing or not at the mets are nine and fourteen therefore games out of the. Four Games out of the East lead they've already lost one two of their best players with marcus, stroman and Noah syndergaard. Know. Why he would even play. It doesn't look like the mets are really going to be doing anything in the division. So. I mean. A. Whole I'll just come back through another game and then and then pretty much just opt out of the season if I were him but. You know he's he's out there playing and he's doing a great job this season and you know you gotta come you got you give him his props for endlessly fighting for the New York mets even then they haven't. You know they've been trying to hold onto whatever relevancy they've had since the I think it was Twenty Sixteen World Series, Twenty Fifteen, twenty, six world series when they lost to the Kansas city royals but alongside him another one in another player from the Bronx went down this weekend. Dj Lemay Hugh. Aaron Boone said the digital mayhew is going to be out for about two to three weeks. He was placed on the ten day de L. With thumbs strain. Suffered it just on a swing in the fourth innings. Nathan you've all the which is not. Not a good sign for the New York Yankees but I mean they're they brought up Miguel and do hard their defense is going to go down but their offense will stay. Will stay you know. Fairly even Keel for the most part I would say they would go down a little bit because Dj here's a four hundred hater and Miguel Angel Harz in anything like that. But I think M Miguel and do Haro. You'll love the at a little bit more power to the lineup. And? They'll lose a little bit of the base but I mean they're they're crews in right now. "And you know it was a near Washington so really happy for him. Let me say this again 28 scoreless dating back to last season. He is the reigning Two time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom's best pitcher in baseball, right? Can you really argue it? Rick Sutcliffe on Friday and Fitz Simmons, a combination of Greg Maddux and John Smokes. He's the power guy that's mostly could be. He's the strikeout guy that he could be, but it is also the Greg Matic stop guy that could get through five or six innings in 50 or 60 pitches. You know, he's just kind of the whole package. He's competitive. One thing that I love about watching him is that you know he was laughing with Freddie Freeman. After you walk him in the first inning. He's having fun with guys in the dugout. But then all of a sudden when he closed that slab, I mean he's all business. Here's the one number that I'm not. I'm not what you'd call a stat guy. I don't if I throw numbers out, that means that I run out of things to talk about, But the one thing I talked about on sports in earlier today, There's only been three guys to win the roof of the year and multiple Cy Young Awards. At Trade Deadline, the Mets Keep Their Arms and Vow to Contend

"Can you believe that we got to the deadline and the mets turned out to be buyers because they sold nothing. They didn't trade syndergaard. They didn't Trae Zack Wheeler that in trade todd frazier. I guess they traded Jason Vargas yes but still the mets basically were buyers before the deadline. I don't get it Sarah. I don't get it and honestly even though people people were somewhat high on the mets entering this year. I don't think I even would have believed that if you told me that on March first hey we're going to get to the trade deadline. The mets are just GonNa get Marcus Stroman. Okay get rid of Jason Burs like I never I never would have believed that. I was pretty surprised I feel like they had some players that you know teams would've wanted. I think I even saw a rumor or about Luis avalon on twitter last night. I forget who it was saying. That teams are interested. I mean I don't understand necessarily not not doing those things and it's it's. It's just interesting. I mean now they're in this interesting situation with Zack Wheeler where I don't know that they're really even in the position where they would want to pay him the qualifying offer and if they if he does take it and if he doesn't then I'm sure they're not going to be in a position to really negotiate with what he's going to want. So that's an odd one one and I don't know I feel like they're just so many moves out there that can be made and one thing that we saw today is a lot of those kind of August I two thirty thirty first deals sort of happen today because they can't happen you know moving forward with the new way that it has this year like that Corey Dickerson trade to me seemed like a waiver kind of trade trade that we might see on August fifteenth and a previous year and is interesting with the mets didn't even attempt something like that. I mean one name that stuck out to me was John Ryan Murphy who is going going to the braves. I feel like you know he would probably be appreciably better for the mess right now. Then Wilson Ramos or Tomas Nido even if he were in a backup role you know maybe NATO's role and it was interesting to me that they didn't even come through on a on a move like that because if you are kind of claiming to go all in and then I would expect more on that side at the the very least so it's it's really an odd one to make one move and have it be like the big splash got this all going and then that's basically it. I would love to be the agent for Marcus Marcus Stroman right now because you talk about emotional leverage that he has on the mets during the wintertime. If you were to say you know what I'm looking for a contract and try to bully them into doing something because that deal was sort of the centerpiece of their whole summer kind of like Brodie van wagon in did last summer on behalf of Jacob degrom. "What I've told is that it's more of a mild injury will see how long is that. It's obviously a big deal in an increasingly competitive American League central Oakland acquired candy Morales from the Toronto. Blue Jays who kicked in ten million to offset most of his twelve million dollars salary in order to make this happen. Jacob degrom deal with the Mets was announced by the team on Wednesday. Here's Jacob degrom saying he wants to finish his career with the Mets signing as a shortstop slash pitcher. Whatever you wanna call it and from day one you guys taking a chance on me. And then seeing me as part of this team's future means a lot. I've said it before that I love my time. I've loved my time here and wanted to be a part of this team's future. And you guys made that come true. And I can't thank you guys enough for that the fans have been great to me. I look forward to being here for a long time. Hopefully, lifelong met and bringing championship to New York. And that deal came out of a marathon negotiating session on Monday. Jeff wilpon the Mets C O talked about that a long day. We started whatever nine thirty in the morning, and I wasn't going to let the plane take off until we were done with this deal. So we were holding them house that she was getting Syracuse or New York with me somehow. And I think he's agents than want him to get on that plane until we had a handshake. On EBay this season. Richard Justice, MLB dot com columnist was on with Spain and fits talking about contracts. They are been very reluctant to give players a big money through age thirty two thirty three thirty four thirty five seasons. And what it means is that the compensation system has to pay players in the second half of the career the owners, and the players are going to have to have some very tough discussions about changing the speed to arbitration free agency. And all of that of the owners have said, we're willing to talk. If you wanna redistribute how the fifty year fifty percent of the revenue is allocated the winners of the winter without question. The Philadelphia Phillies with all their editions and Ryan Dempster of the MLB network was on Spain and Fitz talking about how they added more than just Bryce Harper before they ever got rice Harper. I think they quietly got themselves very much better. Like you. You look at between getting the trade for JT realm. Go getting Andrew mccutchen. I know mccutchen is not necessarily MVP player. But he's still. A very solid major league player and at times plays like an MVP to go there and get you know, Roberson in the bullpen and to do the things they did, gene sicker. They really tightened their team up. And then you go at star power and a guy middle lineup. I think they're going to be a tremendous team. The best move of this off season. Forget harper. Forget Manny Machado ESPN bringing back Doug Glanville. And of course, Josh we're going to bring him back with us at some point. No question on fired up about this. He is the man while he was on sports with Keith Olbermann. Talking about the Linda injury. It's terrible. And when you think about what he contributes to the Cleveland Indians. This is a player that works at excellent levels on both sides of the ball..

"Jacob degrom was the best pitcher in the National League last season. Arguably the best pitcher in baseball was it enough to warrant a long term contract extension perhaps. But if a deal doesn't get done by opening day, the two sides will not talk at all during the season. That's the word from camp and GM Brodie van wagon is fine with that approach. Jeff, Barry, and I have. In in contact. That's Jacob degrom agent. We continue to have dialogue and this concept of opening day deadline for contract discussion is a mutual understanding the Graham is under contract to the Mets for the next two seasons. "How much of a delight your we pivoted. I think we're in a good place. This it's going to be so good this year. Ready? You guys. Oh. This is going to be an utter disaster. Working with him for twelve years. And I still go home upset with myself clinically. I always on Wednesday night. Hate him live at our show with his two guys on ESPN radio. Happy fifty fourth birthday to Dwight Gooden and happy birthday to him. I don't care. Good luck. Gooden over a stretch was as good as anyone to ever throw a baseball. I'm curious. Do you have that sound yesterday from Mike wilbon I'd like to revisit this because I think Greg Cody is probably firmly in the Mike wilbon camp. So I feel like without giving it too much context. Mike wilbon was talking to Frank guy Sola about Jacob degrom. And the idea of Jacob degrom winning the Cy Young for a terrible team in the Mets. And I think Greg Cody is going to agree here with everything we'll bond sets when the gang Frank win the game. I don't care what the ER a is. When. Adam up at the end, you know, the cubs probably have some Cy Young award winning ERA champions in that hundred year plus year, period. And if somebody said I'll trade that for the wins that get me a World Series. What would you do if the answer is anything other than take the wins? Then it's fraudulent than I did. I resign from following sports. Win the damn game. Mike, Mike, he doesn't get any run support. It's at three point six runs. Again. You gotta hang seventies. Only hang tough only started in based on allowance. He'd hang his ERA is one point five strikeouts. One hundred ninety four inning Frank. This is a tyranny of statistics. Now, there's some this Frank there some nights when you got to do a better job. Will you gotta give up nothing or one because your guys aren't hitting. That's the mother nights when you get a break and you can win a six five game. Will you didn't particularly pitch that will ask guys like Bob gives it in Ferguson Jenkins who used to pitch complete games about that. And they didn't whine about not gal port. When about a game. Right on wilpon right on. He's right. He's right. You know, the nature of sports is when you talk to football of defensive football player after his team is just lost fourteen to ten you know, what he's going to say he's going to say we gave up too many points. He's not going to say I played great. We should have one because I play. We did our job on defense are often know the nature sports is that you played a win. And if you're a pitcher, and you lose two to one you don't say, I didn't get the run support. You say I gave up one run too many. You shouldn't have a hall of fame boat. I cherish my hall of fame. Shouldn't have it. You don't deserve. In fact, I just got my ballot in the mail. I'll be perusing it and asking. But my baseball loving sons for advice, they may not say publicly, but you don't think that players on defense are like under the tea like when they're off the record complaining about a team like their offense not among themselves in the locker room. Yeah. They do of heard it. But but the point is for public consumption. The award should put a paramount on on winning..

"Compellingly that he really had a better year than the three or four guys that I just named let alone. Jacob degrom question. How much of the Mets being terrible cost. Jacob degrom being the third and follow up question. Do you think that after the season? The degrom just had not being a finalist for the MVP award means that we will just never see fucking pitcher when the MVP award again, greatly is the answer to the question. Yeah. I greatly it impacts because how valuable can't be if they're that looking bad is what people would say to you. And then what was the second part of that question? Will we see win the MVP again? No. Because the last guy Kershaw in fourteen. Yeah. Why it happened twice with Kershaw Verleger UC's span? Exactly kershaw. Yeah. I don't think we'll ever see pitcher when the VP ever ever ever again been such an emphasis placed on offense and the evolution of that. I think just they will not give because ultimately what that is is is saying is there wasn't a single one of you offense of players that contributed enough to the point where this guy on the mound. Didn't overshadow what you did at the plate. I just don't think ever ever go back to tipping their cap to a pitcher in that that I just think that's like it's ridiculous. I get they have their own award, quote, unquote. But the outline of the MVP does not expressly forbid you in any way or discourage you implicitly from voting for a pitcher is MVP votes that year curricula are gonna be people that you're as he probably I'm going back to look at it as he probably should have like I I agree that there. Was no way they were going to give him the MVP award playing for a team that was basically irrelevant from the beginning of may on or mid may on. I get it. I get it. But like the season justified being included in the conversation. And to your point that it'll never happen. I totally disagree with that. I think this game is way too cyclical to be looking at the current environment and saying it's going to be this way. Forever. Like, I think eventually it will get back to a point like, I think. If honestly if if a pitcher won MVP and the next two or three years, I would not even blow my mind if the grub had that same season for the dodgers does he win it. Yes. He was the I think so. Probably hit a little aggressive when I say that never happened. I think I think it will be a long time coming because if you're not even getting the consideration here with this kind of season, I just feel like really that far removed from twenty fourteen at this point four years. Off. Yeah. Carry the two it's it is like that me analytically in the way that we look at baseball. We really that are move from twenty four. I don't think we're that far removed in the sense that it's changed the way we view pitchers relatives of position players to two thousand fourteen the idea of bullpen. Ding. Was was nonex- navy being kicked around in small circle. All right. That's fine. But I I don't think bullpen. That's a huge part of west is. Okay. Bullpen may cut down on the number of people who get a chance to perform at the level that would be required to win an MVP as a pitcher because you need you're gonna need like two hundred the way that people play baseball on the whole it affects the way you will size up analyze a starting rotation because maybe guys who can't cut it there. Find a place in your bullpen or fill out a role in your bullpen all a Rover role that was created by Alex core. Apparently. So I believe bullpen ING. Affects the very way of life. Or baseball knows. Can't we turn that on its head though and say that if if more and more teams bullpen, and these these high end, it doesn't true number ones become even scarcer than they already are doesn't. I mean, maybe that makes them more valuable. I I've been saying that the whole time this will just continue to go. Let's circle back who you guys actually picking for the award because Jacob degrom much to my chagrin was not available. "Jacob degrom on third Labor Day gave the Mets beat the dodgers for two to Jacob degrom terrific. Who had six innings? Two hits. One run. Six strikeouts runs on a homework through seventy five strikes out of one hundred nine pitches Jacob. Degrom brilliant. Start against the dangerous lineup, no decision. Jacob. Degrom again did not get a win for start, which he was fantastic to degrom. This season has a one point six eight year aid. The second best era for any qualified pitcher, Chris sale at one point, nine, seven, Jacob degrom has at one point nine one year a in starts. He didn't win miss. So that's fun. These things are so silly and stupid because again, it all comes down to pitcher wins and losses. And notice we don't actually care about the stuff, but at least it makes for some fun queries. So Jacob degrom has. He's got an eight eight record. This series also got twelve Asians in wins, eight wins. He has zero nine seventy eight losses. He has a two point seven, three era. And notice he has at one point four one era. So I was curious going through baseball history using baseball reference. This took me forever to track down because it's just a God damn nuisance. But anyway, I finally got what I was hoping to get sort of. So I looked at the past one hundred years of baseball history. Look to the past one hundred years. I looked at all pitchers all starting pitchers who had at least twenty starts that they did not get the win, so twenty losses or notices. And so that gave me a sample of well. I mean I don't even know thousands like twenty five hundred roughly pitchers and I looked from nineteen eighteen to twenty eighteen just a nice even. I guess that's one hundred one years. Don't math check my stat blasts, and I took all those guys and I started the by year Ray now. If you want to look at the at the top of the list, I don't know why it would, but we've got nineteen thirty Claude Willoughby. He had twenty starts. He had a, I guess this would be sixteen losses in for notice at the area of eleven point five. This is not a fun fact that's about Claude Willoughby, nor is it about two thousand four Ryan Vogel song who had twenty such starts in it era of nine point one Jacob degrom this year has at one point nine, seven, eight. I guess in these twenty starts a calculated that differently. Just don't worry about it anyway. Jacob degrom this whole sample roughly twenty five hundred pitcher seasons Jacob degrom zero of one point. Nine seven is indeed the lowest in the sample and not only is it the lowest, but it's the lowest by like more than half of a run versus nineteen sixty eight Sam McDowell who had twenty two starts where he did not win the and the area of two point. Four eight was oh into fourteen in those starts in third place, which I realized I didn't try to filter the third places. This year's Ryan Stanic who really doesn't count cause just constantly been opening anyway, his two point, six seventy era and non wins, but he's got twenty three starts. He's two in those sorts because he's going like knitting at the time. Yeah, twenty. Fourteen Cole hamels shows up here three point. Oh four era. A. and starts he didn't win. But in any case, the most important point, the takeaway here, Jacob degrom unless something really goes wrong or I don't know what would have to happen in September, but less that balloons. He's doing something that is indeed mathematically unprecedented pity Jacob degrom and how the entire NL Cy Young argument is going to be about wins, even though that is stupid and ridiculous and we don't have to be doing this anymore. Yeah, and no one knows the making of for that step lest I will just say that the the research press for that set list was probably the longest of the Sullivan era. You really suffered for that step. Let's definitely the step less that I hate the most..

"Present. Resilience. Welcome to the second episode of you're wrong, and here's why I'm Chris Hubbard l. joined by my co host, Greg, Greg, fun. I episode last week. Yeah, it was a lot of fun. Good to see some of the reaction that we got already in the reviews and stuff. Yeah, I didn't care for it as much because you know, we, we did decide that last week would be kind of a test week and we wouldn't put the polls up and all we have our what we're in, our tunes reviews, and I believe you, you took a slight victory if that's our metric we're using. I mean, if we're going to base it off of what I saw. And what people left the I'll take. I'll take the wind in week one. Minds to argue that who are you to argue that? And thank you to everybody who, who took the time to listen, who took the time to rate and review all that stuff. We're doing fantastically on the, I tunes charts, the reviews, the ratings, it's all flowing in. We were, you know, top top five top ten throughout the week. That's awesome. That's that's more we that we can ask for and we genuinely appreciate it. Mea, southern Grech. No, no, no, I completely agree. I thank everybody that you know has taken the time out to put in the reviews and comment on what they like about the show, and it's it's interesting to see this much interaction this early on. So what did you think of the first week format? Do you think we need to change anything? I mean, I think that it certainly a work in progress, but I like I kind of liked the flow of everything. You know, just short, little snippets, going back and forth and present your argument. Yeah, there. There's one thing we're probably going to make a change on in the next couple of weeks, but. For this week, we're going to keep things status quo and the three topics that were going to be arguing, Greg is going to argue that Jacob degrom deserves the Cy Young award. I'm going to let you know why I believe the NFL needs to keep the preseason to four games and then Gregory on the merits of having won. The comment vote gets his second topic, and he's going to argue that Jon Gruden has ruined the Oakland Raiders. Let's let's get into this. Let's start with Jacob. Degrom Greg. How about we're gonna put two minutes on the clock wants my iphone opens at some point in the future, and let's do it, Greg. Why should Jacob degrom when the Cy Young award arts? So let's let's just take a look at it from purely in ERA standpoint. The guy is twenty-seven starts this season and is a one point six, eight ERA. If you take a look back at, you know, just the last. Twenty years in the NFL for guys who have won the Cy Young. There's only been three guys that I can see that have had it sub to we are as in their higher than that. Now that's Clayton Kershaw back to back years and then Jake Arrieta. And then as you keep going in the NFL, there's no, I guess Eric on you, but he doesn't actually count because that's a closer. It's completely different world in the AL in the AL. There's only one person and it was Pedro Martinez who posted a habit right in front of me. A one point, seven, four zero in the year. Two thousand outside of that. Nobody else has even come close to the the degrom has. Obviously the record is the biggest thing that people look at. I look through all the records and it's always guys with fifteen to twenty plus wins, and that put you have to look at the team that first March April run for the Mets was unbelievable to Graham had a three and record. He gave up nine runs in thirty nine and a third. He had. Forty as eleven walks in those six starts in that timeframe. And then as the year went on, that team fell apart. You can't blame the gram. He's losing games one, nothing. He's losing games to one. He's not giving up is not getting anywhere near the run support that you need to give this guy in the month of June..

"Mostly. I just wanted to point out the fact that nobody had combined this level of elite production with a total lack of team support in terms of wins in like a hundred and thirty years. And what was what would be worse? I mean, because everybody you always go back to to Felix Hernandez right when he won the Cy Young with fucking thirteen wins or signed by the way. But you did not look terrible then that was that was that was good to see, but Felix won the Cy Young in twenty ten with a thirteen and twelve record. You know, like not not great as far as support Jacob degrom might not get to double digit wins, right? What's his wreck? How many wins you? Eight eight, nine eight. Like an obviously, those are numbers that have taken a backseat to the other numbers that really dictate winners and losers of this award these days. But yeah, I, it's, it's insane to think that Jacob degrom is having the year he's having and the numbers do look the way they do as far as team support is concerned. That's that's baffling. We have to give up to get a guy like that. Bring them in will add a pitcher, but it's not going to be a real difference maker. Yeah. And I think that that's mostly what's left in the marketplace. And at some point, the prices will drop enough and apparently the, you know, the Blue Jays have lowered their asking price on Jay happen. You know, the Mike fires, that type of guy. There are a lot of those guys and and I expect that they'll be a bunch of them that will move. And it wouldn't surprise me if the Anki would wind up with one of them. And I also think that they will take strong look at the catching market. Brian Cashman told reporters today that it wouldn't surprise him if Gary Sanchez is out for four weeks and because of how rosters are put together. I mean, let's face it. That means probably is going to be activated after the September one date in rosters open up. It would make sense for the for the Yankees to add some like Martine Maldonado a good defensive catcher. Someone here before the trade deadline muster only with us here on the Stephen Smith show on ESPN radio back to the phone calls in just a moment, but just a minute or two more with BUSTER. So if if there's still some names out there to be dealt, talked about the Yankees, Red Sox making the move for evolve. What else do you think is imminent? And what else do you think it happened to the deadline? Who else you could be the most active teams and who's on the move? Boy, I think basically all the contenders the dodgers are going to add a reliever. I do think Houston will add a reliever because as we get closer, the deadline, I think you're gonna see some of the sellers tried to execute salary dumps, you know, wouldn't surprise me if you see a bunch of those guys moved Toronto's got like three relievers. They're ready to go with young Alano John expert. I think Curtis Granderson gets moved to a contender at some point. They're going to be a lot of smaller type deals before we hit the market. And at one thing, just double back on the Mets a little bit. Yeah, you know, I think that one thing and I agree with you, they need to take an overall look at how they do things in first and foremost, they need to get a linear chain of command. What difference it made for the Ke's organization. When Brian Cashman you know, got the trust of the Steinbrenner family. It was allowed to put and you know. A a, a structure in place for the organization where you didn't have a situation like you did twenty years ago where in a given day, Georgia's driver could have more power than Brian Cashman. Did a great finally got into workable situation with the Mets Omar Mnaya. You know how you're right. They. You know how these things work when you are making a call about Jacob degrom, or Noah. Syndergaard that's not a conference call with like five different opinions on the call. There is one voice and that one voice has to be the clear leader of the organization that has the final say over whether or not you're gonna make a franchise changing, move like that or not one hundred percent and they have to fix that and get it. So we don't have situations like we have last weekend. We're on Saturday yet. Mickey Callaway the manager have an answer for what cesspit is said the night before..

"Again, he potentially could be on the downslide on the downslope of his career. That makes no sense. I said the exact same thing. I mean by the time, the Mets. Realistically not spend any money with a farm system that probably has their best hope for prospects. Say twenty twenty twenty twenty one twenty twenty two. By the time they come up and have an impact. What's Jacob degrom going to be at that point, he's thirty three thirty four years old. They probably won't even spend the money to keep them. So I could not agree with you more. Now, having said all that or the Yankees done, or if you cross the degrom Syndergaard option off the list. "And you're going to be the face of this franchise and i don't think there'd be anything wrong with that jacob degrom is another name who certainly pretty prominent at these all star festivities he's pitched as well as anybody in baseball this year and you know his name has been floated out in trade rumors by the mets given how disappointing they've been this year and then yesterday his agent brodie van wagon and decides to tell everybody that you know if the mets aren't going to sign jacob degrom longterm even when they have under control for two more seasons they might as well go ahead and train them what do you think the resolution is going to be with this situation with the graham and the mets well again you ask a lot of hard questions we're here this is a difficult time right now i'm going to say that the mets knowing if they're ever gonna contend anytime soon jacob degrom and no senate fired need to be healthy and at the top of the rotation and therefore i don't think they're going to trade him i think they're gonna sign a long term i think they should sign him longterm he's only getting better he's got a one sixty eighty are a and even though you can redirect its franchise pretty darn well by trading your best pitcher it just doesn't make sense to me in a lot of ways so i think they'll keep him and signed him longterm because he told us again yesterday on baseball tonight i'd like to say with the mets but he's not gonna stay there if the team keeps losing and they're not going to offer him an extension and the other thing that complicates matters from the mets standpoint and i guess in turn to graham is that they need the first figure out who's going to be calling the shots in the baseball department with sandy alderson stepping down they're gonna probably go outside the organization to interview some candidates and that's not something that's going to be resolved until later on in the off season right and of course that complicates it even more and what further complicates it or maybe makes it easier that this is a new york team across town to really popular new york team the mets just are not in a position the royal can do that and other teams do that but the mets have a hard time doing that and that's the other reason i think they're going to keep to ground but you're right they gotta figure out if they're going to trade him or make any moves who's going to be the guy making those decisions certainly we're talking baseball with tim cartoon of course you're on espn radio i was caught by surprise late saturday night when the word came down from the cardinals that they were dismissing mike metheny you know with one day left before the allstar break begins i thought the timing was a little odd they're in you know we've read all the stories about maybe some dysfunction in the clubhouse and forget about the on field performance of the baseball team number one were you caught off guard that that took place number two d think that a joe girardi for example is going to be the eventual manager in waiting for them while that would i i have i was a little surprised that they made that move because they're the cardinal brian they really don't fire their manager in the middle of a baseball season but the bottom line is being is really just a little bit over five hundred or roster construction not particularly good and i'm not sure you can blame that on the manager but i know and saint louis these days people over can't really ansi there i mean this will likely be three years in a row without making the playoffs and that's just too long but if you're a cardinal fan so they're a little bit here and if patient there which is unlike great cardinal fans and that just shows you maybe move was.

"He'll be in a rea select company of people who've won three cy youngs on a row and four total that's that's who i will go far but obviously no one is better than jacob degrom right now yeah and then jacob degrom got traded to the american league and ruined his national league cy young chances but neither one of us want with aaron nola who's also in that conversation for the phillies he's really he's really grown in young ace there right he's the guy that's this is a breakout year for him a year for the franchise and he's lead the way and you know there were there were in the rematch ix early in the year this had no no none of this is not real but whatever just wants he's made he is really good and he has really taken the role of the guy you the ball i'll stop it i'll start at whatever you need and john lesser is having a great year for the cubs so yeah that's another deep conversation and l cy young all right here we go american league mvp i can think i can guess who you're guy is but tell me who your guy a mike go with mike trout he's the best player in the game he's gonna end up being one of the ten or twenty greatest players of all time at the mid point in his career he's on that track so to me any having his best year in every challenge every time he's been challenged he's met the challenge when we said he wasn't a great defensive player he became a much better defensive player when we said he couldn't hit this pitchy learned to hit that pitch jew no nonsense about him he's the best player in the game you know the in the one thing i sometimes think we should not give him the mvp award we should just set it aside okay you you go you go sit over here and let us argue jose ramirez mookie betts all these other guys because they're fighting for second place and they are worthy candidates to yeah i think we've i think i hope we've gotten past the point where team standing you know matters a great deal in the mvp conversation you know mike trout's win in twenty sixteen was perhaps the the big litmus test they are because obviously the angels were terrible and he was not than he did win the mvp over bets that year i do have to say so richard i dunno listen i'm lean mike trout as my first half mvp definitely all the reasons you said it might be closer than some people give it credit for though like you look at you look at bet says numbers he's got him as of today he's got him in opium he's got him in waited runs graded plus just he's got twenty one home runs to trout's twenty four home runs you've got twenty one doubles the trout seventeen doubles ease a seven behind him in rbi and he's behind him in windsor replacement or maybe maybe mvp is kind of becoming the wins above replacement award and maybe that's a problem i don't know trout definitely ahead in wins replacement as function of playing centerfield basically by we'll say bets is around eighty plate appearances fewer than trout as a function of his injuries so that's a big deal see i lean towards trout oser ramirez i could parse the numbers there i make a strong argument for him as well you know how much should bets be hurt by being on the same team jd martinez i have no idea yeah it's it's trout for me i'm just saying you know maybe it is a little closer than people give credit for it'll be interesting to see yeah it'll be interesting to see what the vote is because the boston riders see bets every day and one of the storylines of the season was mookie has to be better than he was last year while he's way better and he finished second to trout in twenty sixteen so i don't know that this is fair but the fact that he's in he's in the middle of the of tough division race that's gonna get an extra points and you know and the number stand up i mean he's what he's number one in batting average slugging opn i i mean those numbers are real so that you know when you.
