"Now, as many listeners probably know, this is all referencing these revelations from this legal battle between Fox News and dominion voting systems. Dominion currently has a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News for peddling election lies because, quote, the lies were good for fox's business. News said on Monday that quote dominion's lawsuit has always been more about what will generate headlines than what can withstand legal and factual scrutiny. In a recent deposition, Rupert Murdoch rejected that Fox as an entity, endorsed Trump's election lies, but did acknowledge that some of Fox News hosts did individually endorse the claims. He mentioned Sean Hannity, jeanine pirro, Maria bartiromo, and former host, Lou Dobbs. In that deposition, he said, quote, I would have liked us to be stronger in denouncing it in hindsight. The filing also revealed that Murdoch referred to some of Trump's 2020 election lies as bullshit and damaging, but he still believes fox should not be held liable for individual hosts claims and said they're on air comments have been taken out of context. Murdoch was asked why he continued to allow conspiracy theorists and MyPillow CEO Mike lindell on his heir. His answer? It is not red or blue. It is green. Now, Murdoch might have said under oath that money was directing editorial decisions. But this might have big financial costs for Fox News. Take a listen to my colleague Oliver Darcy, who has been leading the way on this story. I think we have to remember that Fox corporation is a publicly traded company. And so they have a board of directors who owe responsibility to the shareholders to make sure that there's some sort of corporate governance. And I think what you're seeing in these documents that are coming out of dominion is there's no semblance of normal corporate governance at Fox corporation, where you have people like the CEO of Fox News seemingly engaged in massive wrongdoing. Dominion's legal filing earlier this month also revealed that Fox News hosts and executives privately made fun of Trump's election lies to each other. The filing made multiple messages and emails public. The messages showed that Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham, brutally mocked Trump's election lies despite Fox promoting those lies on air. It also showed Murdoch did not believe Trump's election lies and even floated the idea of having Carlson, Hannity, and Ingraham appeared together in prime time to declare Joe Biden as the rightful winner of the election. The filing also showed that there was an effort to prevent journalists from fact checking the lies at the network. On one occasion, Carlson demanded that Fox News White House correspondent Jackie Heinrich, the fired after she fact checked a Trump tweet pushing election fraud claims. Fox News argued the court filing contained cherry picked quotes lacking context. That disparity between public and private was underscored throughout the latest filing in this case. And there was another big name in Republican politics that emerged in these filings. Paul Ryan, the former House speaker. He's a board member of the Fox corporation, and court documents released this week show Ryan repeatedly warned Murdoch and his son, Fox corp CEO, Lachlan Murdoch, against quote spreading conspiracy theories, and saying the company should quote move on from Donald Trump and stop spouting election lies. Now Ryan just recently appeared on the bulwark podcast. It just came out this week, though it was recorded prior to the latest revelations from Murdoch being made public. Listen to how Ryan grapples with his role on the Fox board given he is in total opposition to sort of the Trump education of the Republican Party. Do I have disagreements with different personalities on Fox? Of course I do. It's a big tent. It's a huge conservative movement. Do I disagree with Tucker on this stuff? Of course I do. Yeah, absolutely disagree with them. We're different kinds of conservatives. I don't agree with that part. I do, I have a responsibility to offer my opinion and perspective and I do that, but I don't go out on TV and do it. So I offer my perspective in my opinion often. I'll just leave it at that. And Ryan argued on the podcast as to why he still on the board, despite disagreeing with some of what Fox News heirs. Is there a red line for you at any point where you said I can not be associated with a company that does this? I want to see the conservative movement get through this moment. And I think Fox is a big part of the constellation, the conservative movement. And I want to see the solution or the problem. Oh no, I think it's going to have to be a part of the solution if we're going to solve the problem that conservative movement because there isn't a bigger platform than this in America. So I think the conservative movement is going through a lot of churn and a lot of turmoil and I don't like where it is right now. In today's political media environment, Fox News has real power and sway inside one of America's two major political parties and given the current state of affairs, it is hard to imagine how the Republican Party moves through this moment in opposition to fox instead of fox being part of moving through this moment. Now, where Paul Ryan may find himself on the wrong side of this equation, is that his views may simply just be out of step with what the Republican Party desires and fox is not likely to be the tip of the spear. They'd rather follow what their viewers are demanding. And that becomes the conundrum and that is why this 2024 Republican presidential race, which is just getting underway, may end up answering a lot of these questions about the direction of the GOP.

And I think our actions and the work that we have had in working with the Justice Department, the FBI and federal law enforcement show that we take, we have seen some of these extremely video extremely disturbing videos showing retail thefts and both major retailers as well as state and local leaders like governor Newsom have identified this as a serious concern. We agree. That's the reason why we have sent additional support from the FBI, providing additional assistance. It's one of the reasons why we have also been the president and members of our administration have been long time advocates for supporting and funding the cops program something where the president proposed almost 300 million in additional assistance through his budget from what it was last year and why we have also provided money to get a Friday provided financial assistance to get money to hire 50 more police officers through the cops program that the president has championed in places like San Francisco and additional 20 officers in Los Angeles. So I think his record speaks for itself on this. We are going to continue to advocate for supporting programs like the cops program, ensuring that our law enforcement are good partners as we're working to address these retail thefts across the country. I'm no fan of the Biden administration. I'm no fan of The White House press secretary, but that's the right answer. It is.
