inner circle Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake powered by more than a 127 countries in more than a 120 journalists You're listening to Bloomberg daybreak Europe Caroline Thanks so much Hannah George with all the latest news Now bear market for European indexes that Jackson catcalled down more than 20% from their recent high all in natural gas prices soaring as the U.S. considers an oil embargo joining us now as Gilmore chief economists at actor Jill very good morning Thanks for being with us What is the war in Ukraine mean for European economic growth and for inflation that is already running at close to 6% Surely this is going to mean a huge shock the potential for factories to shut down in Europe Yes it's very significant So the very beginning of the crisis we did a very simple simulation and looking at what an inflation could look like with oil prices that $125 per barrel and gas prices which met in more for Europe actually than oil and also €125 per minute hour And the result was that we should expect inflation to increase by at least one percentage points and GDP to be hit to the tune of one percentage point as well And it was probably a conservative calculation Now we have actually gone further than these than the threshold On oil and gas as well gas in particular is rising very very fast And an issue for Europe is that we use natural gas especially natural gas from Russia To plug any gap between supply and demand of electricity So there's a very direct link between the price of natural gas and the price of electricity So you end up with an impact on household persisting power very very quickly and you also end up with an impact on business input prices So it is detrimental to margins as well So as things stand today my 1% shock of last week is probably already obsolete and probably looking at at least 50% more than that So when does this tip over from being an inflation stock inflation shot we already have an inflation problem into a growth shock So clearly this is going to the oil price is going to trim a bit of GDP growth from western economies But when does this start to get to get serious Get serious very very quickly Because what's happening is that it's bad inflation in the sense that it doesn't reflect an improvement in wages and improvement in the labor market It's just an additional cost that has to be borne by existing disposable income So if you lose one one and a half percent of your disposable income are you going to reduce your spending as well by between one and one and a half percent So consumption is going to be hit pretty quickly It's already starting to show signs of weakness We had in for instance to disappointing figure for consumption in January already in France We already have strong inflation at the end of last year and in particular a very steep increase in energy prices especially in some countries such as Spain and Italy fits already having detrimental impact on consumption But I would expect also gradually the impact to start impacting our business investment decisions as well because all the sectors which are intensive and energy will be facing the generation and their margins and when your margins are deteriorate you usually don't want to invest too much So it's probably going to materialize first and consumption but then not much later in business investment as well Okay All of this is sort of things that we can think about things that investors can plan and perhaps model but how do you wrap your mind around the unthinkable the difficult question of the chances that Russia's invasion of Ukraine actually grows into a minute too conflict between Russia and Europe Maybe 12 days ago that seemed bit far fetched but perhaps it's not now So what is the framework for thinking about that Well we're not there as you say Boss yeah I mean we can always want to think about these things If we get into an allowance foundation it's the way our economies operate that will change War economics is very different from normal peacetime economics You've sort of state intervention covenant control That would shake probably the market very very deeply It would be an entirely different paradigm but we're not there yet.

"A good morning to you and thank you a second bit to create a safe passage for over 200,000 civilians trapped in the southern city of Mario pole failed over the weekend this morning Russia says there was a fresh agreement for a temporary ceasefire to enable a humanitarian corridor in several cities The town of urban just outside the capital Kyiv has endured sustained shelling by Moscow's forces Russia's president Vladimir Putin has reiterated the war will continue until Ukraine accepts his demand and halts resistance This is lowering the hopes for a diplomatic resolution Now a decree signed by president Vladimir Putin will allow Russia and Russian companies to pay foreign creditors in rubles The decree establishes temporary rules for sovereign and corporate debt is making payments to creditors from the countries that quote engage in hostile activities against Russia Russian corporate bonds denominated in foreign currencies have plunged to deeply distress levels in recent days as investors do weigh the impact on sanctions and finally a teenager from Florida who sought to fame tracking Elon Musk's private jet is turning his sights on two yachts of Russian billionaires Jack Sweeney started tracking the aircraft of Russian oligarchs at the end of February Now he is also following their yachts as a tycoons come under increasing sanctions pressure following Russia's invasion of Ukraine Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm leann gerrans this is Bloomberg Anna Thank you very much Leigh Anne Let's get to our last conversation of the hour Tatiana grill Castro joins us co head of public markets at New Zealand very good to speak to you Tatiana We're sitting here looking at commodity prices going considerably higher gas prices across Europe taking out new highs oil prices not at new highs but certainly an incredibly elevated levels One two $7 a barrel is what we trade on Brent We've been as high as one three 9 overnight How quickly are you having to rethink strategy as a result of these high commodity prices relevant relative to recent history Yes good morning and you are quite right I mean we really have to reassess the portfolios again because it is high energy prices high commodity prices Supply side disruptions are all those things what impact that may have on demand and consumer confidence So all those things we need to reassess that the first level of assessment clearly because we have to get started and to the relatively quickly is generally always capital structure how well capitalized the company is I know a lot of people now look at banks and what impact that may have We see actually banks very well capitalized We don't expect anything similar to what we saw in 2008 And because they have much higher capital buffer than they had during the financial crisis And all the exposure to Russia is actually very manageable for the bank And so because they're so over capitalized it wouldn't cause any we don't expect them to cause any significant issues But clearly there is always also potential unintended consequences We see more broadly sectors all sectors across the board as they retrieve out of Russia there are no buyers of those assists who have to write the most completely And that we also saw in the bond market as you say there's a lot of concern of will you get paid what currency will you get paid in Will you be able to receive payment may cost a technical default And all those sort of uncertainties are overshadowing the market at the moment Bank share prices today and what they're doing I mean some of these moves quite stunning in just one day This takes you back to the financial crisis the types of moves we're seeing here Tatiana I mean something like UniCredit down by 14% we see commerce bank by 12% erst a group 12% I mean and 11 Some banks like rice and you know there's actual exposure to Russia substantial to talk about there Other banks yes there is some but you wonder whether the selling is overdone I see stock gen down by ten and a half percent today Are these have we overdone the selling of the banking sector do you think On a fundamental basis yes it clearly is a case of people wanting to get out of those names and nobody's stepping in So fundamentally it does look over them but that doesn't mean they couldn't get a little bit worse because what we are expecting actually you go to safe haven So there is clearly in sovereignty but also just in cash So investors may be worried or asset managers worried that there could be outflows So you just want to reduce your exposure and given the level of uncertainty there is a really many who think that this is the right level because there are things So there's a lot of technical pressure at the moment Okay I mean is there anything authorities should be thinking about doing here looking at the extent of selling we're seeing on the banking sector Tatiana We've heard from some individual banks about their levels of exposure hoping that that will kind of put a line in the sand is that what's going to help here or should it be some an ECB voice or government voices talking here to try and calm nerves about banks What should be the course of action What should what would calm things down Yeah as you say I mean the individual companies coming out and stating the limited exposure that they're having especially bank It seems investors aren't really listening So it is really a matter of sort of shoot first ask later in that regard I mean just reduce your exposure and then we assess So yes that would warrant potentially a fiscal and a monetary response And that's something that we are considering at this stage Maybe less around banks but if we continue to sell off the could also be okay but more broadly as we said earlier energy and commodity prices the impact that has on the board economy So you could see actually a fiscal response may be very targeted with the response over the next week or so And also monetary policy we all expected the ECB to exit quantitative easing and to start raising interest rates and there made have to have a little bit of a different approach because clearly inflation is rising that may vary in higher interest rates but at the same time volatility is also so great that may warrant quantitative easing So it could even be that they do both in parallel So we'll have.

"This is name Jack Sweeney. But anyways, there's a guy. Something like that. Yeah, it's been in the news, and I'm sure everybody's heard about this as a guy who not only not only stocks Elon Musk's private jet on something like flight aware, but he actually created a website that scrapes the information off the public web and posts specially so that you can, you know, so it's sort of a, it's sort of a where in the world is Elon Musk, right? Or strictly speaking, where in the world is Elon Musk's airplane. But yeah. And so, and the story as the story goes, you know, when it's first happened, Elon offered him $5000 to take it down. And I think pretty wisely the guy said, well, give me 50,000 and I'll take it down. Oh, 50,000, 500,000. Or whatever it was he asked for. No, he asked for piastre 50 and I'm like, no, Elon, I don't know sure you have enough money right now. Yeah. And it's now, but apparently now the guy has. I mean, it's kind of working to his advantage as one of the it's gotten in some notoriety. And I guess he works in the coding world or something like that. And so this visibility has helped him financially. And he's got a, he's got a sponsor or something now. He's got permission now from the FAA to do this. Fine for you. The FAA, I'm this information. And here's the punchline. That's always been possible. That's always been doable. Yeah. I mean, those of us who pay attention to stuff realized from the get go that this was, of course, he can track Elon's airplane. This is the way it works. And, you know, so anyways, so I'm not the only one. But I don't manage to make a laugh a lot of money out of the people I stalk, which maybe well, I don't know. You have to up your game. There's a life lessons there somehow some way. And. Then I don't know. A FedEx wants to put laser death rays on their airplanes. That's not exactly true, but now. This is a story from a while ago. Did they actually has anything happened here? Did they get permission every day? From our favorite aviation publication futurism dot com, a colon called the bite. FedEx asks permission to kind of FedEx ask permission to install anti missile lasers on its cargo jet. Yeah, it uses a reactive system. If it gets targeted by, we have an update to this story. We do. Okay. Yeah, David. Go ahead, David. Describe how it works or what it does? Well, system detects it. It's being targeted that counters with its own laser light to free the missile coming in. When I first, that's right. And that's my understanding as well. And when I first read this story, I had images of a Star Wars laser death ray. But it doesn't actually explode. If there were an incoming missile or whatever, it doesn't actually destroy it. The laser confuses its heat sensors or something like that. Yeah, so it hits somewhere else. Yeah. So something still gets hit. But so Jeff, you're saying there's an update on this. What is it? Yeah, I just sent it via the same Caster page. It's a lawyer summarize it for us. Oh, the headline is kind of says it all. U.S. FAA halts review of FedEx proposal to install a three 21 laser based missile defense system. And this is data January 18th. So they're not even going to consider this proposal. Hang on a second. The FAA said Tuesday it has determined that further internal study is necessary. He said to avoid confusion, a comment period on a proposal that the agency is not moving forward at this time. The FAA is withdrawing the notice. FedEx did not comment Tuesday in the FIA declined comment beyond the withdrawal. So somebody somebody's something. Go ahead. Somebody's what? There's a chance kids are listening to it. Cynical much? My goodness. Okay. Someone messed up. Someone did something they shouldn't have done. And just basically what I think they did is they made it public. Right. That was a mistake. Because this kind of thing has been, this goes back to right after the 9 11 back in the early aughts. And the terror industrial complex was really getting the role on. And I sent the briefing talking about likelihood of.

"Can buy the parts from us if you want. And assemble your own. But yeah, we've got 7500 of them, half of them are in the U.S., the other half are various international places, mostly big concentration in Western Europe, let's say. It's very popular in the UK and the Netherlands. Well, when you started this, did you have grand visions of creating this large functionality or quitting your job and earning your living from this or is it kind of like a hobbyist kind of a thing that got out of control? It was really kind of the letter. It was a hobbyist thing that got out of control. I mean, it started doing this. After work, I'd be working on the computer and my wife would say, what are you doing? You're working on that website again, you know, yeah, yeah, it's pretty neat. It was a hobby for many years. Up until recently, I had an IT job that I worked for WeWork, and that's a whole different other story. If you ever follow the financial markets, but anyhow, that sort of did what it did a couple of years back. And then I saw I started doing this full time. We've grown the network. It's really, it's really made first and foremost for hobbyists and people who are interested in what's going on out there. And sort of the commercial aspect. I mean, yes, it does create data that we can sell and use that to pay the bills. I mean, we have two data centers and all sorts of equipment that we need to maintain and things like that. So there is a need for funding to keep that going, but really the primary purpose is to really serve the hobbyist that says, what's out there, what's fine? You can flip it on and see interesting things like the zephyr drone that's flying in southern Arizona where that was a solar powered drone that can fly around the clock, basically it flew for days and days on end. You see all sorts of interesting stuff, the Google loon balloons, and now that that project's been canceled, the other balloons that are doing whatever they're doing on it, they've got some defense contractor or something, but that, and then people like to watch military activity to obviously if the military is going in and doing something on a mission. They're not going to have transponder on because they don't want the enemy to know what they're doing. But there are a lot of public missions that are broadcast and they do leave their transponder on. You can kind of see movements and things that are going on. And whatnot. So that's another popular aspect of it too. But there's all sorts of uses for this data. Whether you're we worked with a lot of NGOs and places like that, looking at whether it be ivory smuggling or drug smuggling or moving questionable things around. Is that what a C four ADS dot org is all about? Yes, yes, that's correct. We have a partnership with them where we share the data and they help us expand the network into some of the less covered corners of the globe. We can track a lot of interesting things going on that it may help to shed light on. When I was playing over the weekend with, I don't know, some apps somewhere. And I saw somebody come up on maybe it was Twitter or something that said, hey, you know, I've been tracking this predator over the Ukraine just doing holding patterns and I went, how in the world did you figure that out? Well, while we were sitting here, I opened your app on my laptop and it's pretty clear. There's not a whole lot of traffic around the Ukraine and southwest Russia and it's pretty easy. But I would have thought just to your point earlier that in a predator, they wouldn't have had the damn thing on unless they wanted somebody to know they were there. I'm pretty sure it's the latter. I think most of this most of the time when they leave this stuff on, it's because they want to send a message. If you have a stealth aircraft, you're not going to broadcast your location, but I think they want to make it clear that they're there and they're watching. That's my theory. I'm pretty sure they didn't forget to turn it off. Although, through some contractors, we have heard that the air force was quite surprised about how much social media there is around, hey, look at where this plan is going, look at where that plane's glowing and I mean, we're actually talking about doing some things with helping them increase their op sec to remember to turn that transponder off when you want it off. Well, a privacy is an issue that's been brought up by some. I think we know that in maybe another services, the aircraft of corporations or wealthy individuals is not included in the publicly available data that that service provides, maybe one of the big examples that we've seen lately, of course, is the tracking of Elon Musk's plane and how I guess Jack Sweeney is the guy that is doing that. Elon doesn't like the fact that his travels are available to anybody that follows the Elon jet Twitter account..

"About other things. With a SpaceX thing to their credit, I interviewed Don Kessler for he of the Castro effect a few years back. And he was like, SpaceX are actually pretty good about it. Planning to deorbit this stuff. In a way, in a way that in the way that many national governments aren't. But I'm totally with you on this. The amount of problems this is causing astronomers and the potential problems if it all goes wrong. Somebody needs to stop and say, look, have you really thought this one through other than with your own company's interests? Well, we know. NASA has said the International Space Station is going to D or D orbits the word they use. Sometime in the next ten years, probably 20, 30 or later. But they learned from skylab. Remember in the late 70s? Skylab started orbit started to decay and then nobody thought about it. Nobody planned. All they could do was let it crash. They figured, well, it's mostly water, so we're probably all right. In fact, question Australia. But that's another story for another day. I think they learned the lesson. And so now there is enough juice to deorbit it in such a way that will crash into the Pacific. I think you're about to say what I was going to say. There's an effort to clean up space to me. Is that what you're going to say, Andy, and that the U.S. is very far behind. We put up a lot of junk, but we've been really bad about taking it down. We're number one. So I know that there are private companies that want to go drag some of these space parts into low orbit so they supposedly burn up on reentry, but if that sounds like a bad plan too. Well, I think it was a business, right? Somebody's a British company is proposing a giant. Giant space net. It's the removed debris satellite. And it's a giant space net. It's actually been deployed. To capture space junk. It's from Airbus. Thank you very much. Combining the cutting edge bus technology to unprecedented aerodynamics. For years now there have been satellite China started launching satellites I think in 2016 that have been testing, grappling, grappling features, so that it can actually interact with other satellites, move them into different orbits, pull them out of orbit and necessary. And a lot of the a lot of the conversation has been, oh, there's going to be new wars in space in which we attack each other's satellites. I know that and I know that's actually a likely possibility and the grand scheme of things, but also this is a necessary technology. We need the ability to simply say, when there's a conflict between two spacecraft, one of which is derelict, we need an ability. And we need an ability to deal with it, that doesn't simply come down to the spacecraft has to get out of the way. What was a two or three years ago where there was another incident I wish I could remember the actual details about the air force that was tracking all this information basically gave a warning to the operators of one spacecraft that look basically about to crash into something else. And because there was no specific no chain of orders in place to say that look, if you are operating a spacecraft, you have to have somebody Manning a station so that if we send you this warning, somebody gets it, somebody puts it into the right hands and you take action. But unfortunately it's sat in somebody's inbox for three or four days. And a certain amount of emergency action had to be taken to avoid a crash that would have put a whole bunch of new debris into space. Isn't that the plot for the movie gravity, Sandra Bullock? Yes, exactly. They get hit by a space debris. Oh, if I have to film drives me nuts as a space geek, it's just like really, you can transfer orbits that easily just use it but anyway. But it is a massive problem. Sandra Bullock, she can do anything. Yeah, well, it's not as bad as Armageddon, which rumor has it is still shown to potential NASA employees to find out how many inaccuracies you can get. And the record is, as I understand it, is a 167. Oh my gosh. You're clearly having screen space camp, which I saw with a bunch of hilariously bad polytechnic polytechnic university. Is now at the top of the don't watch list for me. Doesn't it? From what I hear from a lot of people, it's bad and it's crazy, but it's like national treasure level bad where they know that they are going nuts here and they're leaning into it. And if only they had Nicolas Cage in there, then the people would understand, okay, look, we know the science here is wonky. We're just having a good time here. The same plot, isn't it, although this time it's the moon, not an asteroid, right? True. Yeah. This is the moon breaking up. This one that I seem like a Patrick that seemed like a Neal Stephenson plot. It's a movie where there is a line. I need you to help me get in touch with NASA. Right now. The moon is out of orbit. Yeah, it's got a twist. The moon is not what you think. It actually have seen it. And I interviewed the director, Roland emmerich, this past week, because he's the guy who wrote Independence Day. Yeah. And a bunch of he's done a bunch of movies. And it is ridiculous. I've seen so many bad reviews, and yet I really want to see it. They tried to explain it. Don't watch the trailer. It's a spoiler alert. I'm not going to say anything. Connie now I understand what you're talking about. What he did 2012. The film. He did the day after tomorrow, which was the climate change one. Yeah. Yeah, okay. Yeah, okay. Well, 2012, which was a why did you see a film? Let me ask you, and did you see in the theater more to the point? No, no, no. I had the opportunity. I get to co host a podcast for CNET called I'm so obsessed. And we talked to actors, directors, other creative types. And I was able to screen it. Ahead of time and my living room, and then I talked to the director Roland emmerich. Wow, nice. A couple of days before it was launched. Good stuff. Yeah, I mean, I'll watch anything. Because it's stuck at home with anybody. You know who's a success is the 19 year old teenager Jack Sweeney, who tweets the location of Elon Musk's jet. Which he points out on his Twitter feed is completely legal. Elon, the like it so much and has offered him all sorts of things. Jack says I want a car. It started as a hobby, and I don't want to let go of a hobby for something that's not going to really change my life. I don't have a car right now. It would be great to have a car and a Tesla would be really cool. Absolutely Elon blocked him. Well, Elon said it's a security issue. I guess it is, but it's public information. It's all in the public database. So Elon apparently offered him $5000. Now I should point out Elon Musk is the richest man in the world with 224 billion. If I already Jack might be insulted by $5000, a car wouldn't be too much to ask. He also tracks the private jets from Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Donald Trump. Follow him on Twitter. Elon can I say that if the guy is smart, he'll ask for electric car that's a little bit better made than a Tesla. It's employees a little bit. That would be the height of irony is to say, Elon, I want a car, but anything but a Tesla. So those panel gaps, I just can't. I don't want to be made fun of it cars because little break. Oh, no. I'm going to make you take a break. Go have some Marmite or whatever it is you British people. That's very nationalist of you. What is going to eat a Twinkie? If I'm going to eat the.

It's all just coming from above. I think that off Sweeney and the LED are in the hot seat and we'll see if what they are doing or have done or what's going on this season and that's happened in the offseason. But I do I agree. I think Jack Sweeney better refined that plan improved that the plan's working out and I get a little concerned. Like I said last week, I think it's not necessarily player. He goes that are starting to get in the way a literal. It's like almost like like maybe needs these draft next to work on some level during any like he needs to show that they are at least something they're not throw his cuz they were all high draft picks. You know what I mean it maybe they shouldn't have all been drafted where they were drafted. That's either but thank you for the question Maria. I definitely think Sweeney is in the hot seat probably nearly 2:00 at this point Midwest chirps podcast ask. What is your opinion of David krejci being assisted? Captain do you think you should it should have gone to a younger player like Charlie McAvoy or Jake debrusk? You answer that pleased first. Do you think what how do you feel about crazy being assistant? Captain should have gone to somebody younger. You know, I'm good with it. I'm probably crazy being the he's a veteran. He's been around for a while. Yeah, I think that that's the way it should be done. And I know I'm doubling down on the whole thing about Bergeron possibly off taking it because he's like one of those people that just a quiet leader and so on but yeah, I think this is a good for him and his last season and also probably could be a good thing for negotiating a further retention, you know, and you could be a player that could be signed for another year or two. So Yeah, I would like to I don't have an issue with it because I don't think that necessarily putting a c on a young kid as a good thing. Sometimes it puts pressure that doesn't need to be there. You know what I mean yet? I I think though that people seem to forget David. Krejci is done an assistant Captain. He the only person who got a new letter was Brad Marchand licks, you know what I mean? Like crazy has been assistant Captain. He's been for a long time on and off in the organization. So like I would think it'd be weird of crazy didn't have the a you know what I mean? Like, that'd be weird to me because the pecking order for like just how it was like Chara Notch car's not here obviously Bergeron gets the C but Bergeron and crazy are inseparable to me like even though they're two totally different players just as men have played the game together. They have been showing up the top two lines of this and flopping as the top two centers for so long. So I like it. I like that. Krejci, and I think it sends a message to Keeping the veterans right as the you know, they're the ones who have this culture. Now that chair is not here. It's on them to keep the the culture quote unquote going. Yes so long..

"Doesn't pay a ton gets them to agree to less to try to win more. So for me, I mean, absolutely I think that he has been he's been very good at re-signing some guys and we've talked about this a thousand times like we we have consistently discussed this. Yeah. Bergeron's contract was not I was not under Sweeting, but to me, I mean just reciting some guys been tremendous that and I think that has been a big reason why they've sort of Kind of kept this core going and had this Resurgence in the mid 2010 swear. They just you know, Claude got fired Cassidy came in and the fact that I think the fact that Jack Sweeney didn't blow it all up when you came in as a huge deal or not when you came in but those years I mean they were kind of mediocre. They were missing the Playoffs by a point or to the fact they didn't just say screw it we're going to rebuild the thing is pretty telling and pretty impressive. They didn't pull the plug on Bergeron and create she and Marshon so credit to him for that. I put that under Pros signing off liners Adept pieces. I mean, you know went out and got her lack, you know, you know Joakim Nordstrom was a solid pick up. I think Greg mckegg might be a solid pickup. Is it a lot of 4th Line guys, he's gone out and got that have been it paid dividends and get pieces. You know, you look at look at some of these trade deadline moves, you know, you look at a guy like, you know, Joe Hanson, that's a Thursday. Right. There are coil 3rd liner. Those are great depth pieces. So to me, I mean I look at that and he also lets these 4th liners go with the right times. I mean he let Nola Charlie go out and get his money. He let he let him shower go and get his money. You don't want to pay those guys that much money so he gets the most out of them and let them go I mean credit to him. So that's a pro. So those two Pros the cons to me the trades have been iffy. So you have some good trades. I mean we can look at each trade deadline. So 2016 through 2020. They were in every trade deadline. I think they were contenders. I mean, they they were not sellers of any of these deadlines 2015-16 team was line for a playoff spot. They went out and got John Michael Liles and Lee stempniak who You I mean you just like, oh at least I'm Nick was even that bad that year but clearly not enough 2016-17. They went out Drew Stafford which.
