"Every year we have a new story to tell. At Augusta National, and this time the story is told. Had decade. Matsuyama, the first Masters and major champion from Japan. He wins the green jacket in the 85th Masters at 10 under par for the tournament, one shot clear. American Will's Allah Taurus and Charlie Reimer under a bright blue sky at the end of the day, today hit Deck E Matsuyama as his countrymen. Woke up on a Monday morning in Japan provided them with a moment they'll never forget. Moment he'll remember for the rest of his life. The Masters: Justin Rose digs deep to regain lead

"Justin rose shoots an even par seventy two to maintain the lead here at augusta national. He's followed on the leaderboard by will Taurus and brian harman one shot back of the leader at six under par other. Notables on the leaderboard include jordan. Spieth at five under tony fee now in justin thomas are both at four under some superstars. Missed the cut friday including westwood rory mcilroy and defending masters champion dustin johnson. We'll discuss each of those players day coming up here on the podcast with. Nbc's jimmy roberts. The voice of masters digital justin rose was the thirty six hole leader once before here at the masters in two thousand four. The seventeen year gap of thirty six hole leads for him is the longest gap in masters history. But certainly rose hopes to finish a bit differently. This time around in two thousand four. He finished the master's tournament tied for twenty second and one other interesting nugget of information. There have only been five wire to wire masters champions ever jordan. Speak in two thousand fifteen. Raymond floyd in nineteen seventy six. Jack nicklaus in nineteen seventy-two arnold palmer in nineteen sixty and craig wood in nineteen forty one following his second round. Seventy two justin rose spoke with the media. Here's what he had to say thing. The thing is i was just joking. The fingers kind of heading towards the panic buying a little bit But did i talk myself on on eight. And said you know you still leading the masters and i just change my mindset a little bit and started to play matchplay against the golf course scratcher line on my scorecard and told myself as three down and could i go ahead and beat the golf course from that point on so i had a part in eighteen to win my match. One up unfortunately slip.

Let's let's start where it started on thursday morning. The elder joins jack nicklaus gary player as an honorary starter. And of course he broke the participant color barrier here at augusta national. What's the significance of what happened. This morning i was really moved. I mean i have been to that. Honorary starter ceremony. Going all the way back to gene. Sarazen and sam snead doing it. Lots of times these rituals. I don't wanna say they're hollow but they don't grab you this morning. Did you know it was you. could you know. I don't wanna be overly dramatic but you could see it in his eyes. You know how how much this meant to lee elder and you know looking at him. It made you think back to what he had endured. And what it must have meant to be a black man in georgia in nineteen seventy five and to be the first you know and and it it just made you think about. Saturday at the 2020 Masters

"Saturday at the masters in dustin. Johnson is running away. He carries a four shot lead into the final round sunday. Following a seven under sixty five saturday he was masterful tying jordan speiss fifty four hole record chasing johnson on the leaderboard are sung j. M abraham answer and cameron smith all four shots back while justin thomas and dylan 'fratelli sit five shots back following his round saturday. I called up with dustin johnson. Seven hundred sixty five news. Dustin johnson to sixteen under through three rounds. What did you do well saturday. And what if anything would you like to do. Better sunday I did everything while today. Adrover very nicely head. A bunch of fairways Hit a lot of greens and felt like i. I gave myself good chances on your on almost every hole. and so. that's kind of what you gotta do here. In the conditions. Not a lot of wind you know. Courses is fairly soft so you can be aggressive and Strike in a very nicely today And so you know tomorrow. We'll have to go out and do a lot of the same if i to win. Tied jordan speeds fifty four hole record. What's the balance between staying aggressive and not being dumb Well for me. It all depends on you know. Flag positions numbers Forgot a good number. And and i like the flag is a play aggressive but Like i said the course right now is is very receptive so you know i know the guys behind me are going to be trying to chase down south. You know you can't play you know there's a there's definitely a fine line of being too conservative and too aggressive but you just have to pick and choose my spots second last year. How did that impact your motivation. This time around. I mean yeah it was. I've played well last year. I played while the last couple years so obviously this one tournament that that i definitely want to win and you know. It means a lot to me. A- grew up so close to here and so it is something that i really look forward to until tomorrow is going to be a. It's gonna be a lot of funding. I'm gonna try to enjoy myself as much as i can and Hopefully hopefully outcomes good tomorrow afternoon. You heard dustin johnson say right there how badly he wants to win the masters. It's the dream of every player in the field in this eighty. Four th edition for more analysis on the third round and what to expect sunday. Let's bring in the voice of masters digital jimmy roberts. Dustin carries a four shot lead into sunday following a seven hundred sixty five saturday. He was masterful. Tying jordan speiss fifty four hole record assess his performance on saturday. A great it was basically as good as you could get You know you said it. He tied the fifty four hole scoring record. It is a different time of year. But i don't think it really matters. I mean the thing that sticks out to me is that you know through fifty four holes. He's got two bogeys which is unimaginable. On this golf course and they were in consecutive holes. Fourteen and fifteen in the second round. And when you stop to think about it he bogeyed the second easiest hole on the course which means that by all rights. He should probably expect to birdie the fifteen th hole. You give him two more strokes and he's just farther ahead of the pack. But i will just say this. I was here in nineteen ninety six and i covered that masters where greg norman had six stroke lead and nick faldo came back to win it so i mean this course can do things to you i mean. I think that there were extenuating circumstances that year. Norman had some physical difficulties. That didn't manifest until the final day and faldo played effortlessly. I think he shot sixty seven It's gonna take that for somebody to beat him tomorrow Somebody's going to have to play really really well. And he's going to have to stumble. What is it about this golf. Course that suits his game so well. Well i mean at this point really. He's the number one player in the world and he's as they like to say in europe he's on form so you know. He's a finely tuned engine right now and He's not even close to the red line. So i mean he is just got it all going on right now. I mean he's you know. I always say that you know. These are the best golfers in the world on on a week to week basis. You know you shouldn't be surprised if somebody you've never heard of comes up and wins a tournament because they are all remarkably talented. But he's the best of all of them right now and he is playing really well You know we've talked about this over the last couple of days. He you know he's long and straight which is tough to beat and then a couple of years ago. He decided that in order to get better you had to work on his wedge game so he went and did that he's become a terrific putter and he's completely unflappable. He i think. And i think that's the most important thing i think he's a guy who just does not get undone by much. I just asked him a few moments ago. what's the balance between maintaining the aggression. That got you here without going too far. Yeah i'd i'd be curious to know what he said but in all honesty. I've never seen him loses. Temper made him. I've never seen him hot. I've never seen him running hot. I'd seen him disappointed disappointed. And you're not going to be able to see this on the podcasts. But you know it's just kind of an shucks wish i hadn't tripled that whole crazy when i do. Something you know like that He's really he's a talented man. Who's in stride right now and You know he's done a lot He's one everything but tons of majors. I mean he's tiger tiger woods. He's one in to start his career. He's won thirteen consecutive seasons to start his career. Only tiger woods is done that and he tied him tiger actually one in his first fourteen seasons. But i mean he just consistently wins you know and it's hard to beat talent you know and worth work ethic when you match those two things together. It's very difficult. Let's look at the leaderboard. That is chasing dustin johnson song j. m. abraham answer cameron smith all four shots back. Justin thomas and dylan for tally. Five shots back if you were going to pick one to catch him. I don't think there's any question. The person who watches is Is justin thomas. But the way sunday m is playing and things are different now than they used to be. You know it's been forty one years since a first timer has one here that was fuzzy zeller nineteen seventy-nine. You know i was with the jack nicklaus this morning doing something and He talks. Jack came here and he didn't win for the first five times that he played here. But this is a course more than any other course were experiences necessary. But look you've got answer and in two players who were here for the first time in their you know right nipping at his heels Sebastian munoz too. So i i do think that must not be worth as much as it has been in the past given the level of talent and work of these guys but you know you give me a guy who has the experience and a guy who doesn't of equal talent and at the same spot in their game. I'm gonna take the guy with experience at this place every single time. Rory mcilroy and brooks koepka. Both superstars both at eight. Under after three rounds. How plausible is it that they might contend on sunday. I think it's entirely plausible. I mean i think that you know mcelroy's trending in the right direction after that seventy five in the first round which was disastrous for him. Just can't seem to get out of his own way sometimes but he's got a game. That's ideally suited for this place. He hits it high far and straight. His natural shot is right to left You know he's been number one in the world he's not undone by these big situations. Generally i think he's going to be a very interesting guy to watch tomorrow. But in all honesty there's so much daylight between dustin johnson and the rest of the field at this point and it's not the daylight of four strokes. It's the daylight of four strokes with the number one player on the one side of that daylight. Who's playing well. And i mean. I think it's gonna take dustin johnson shooting seventy two or three tomorrow. I mean i suppose it could happen. You know greg. Norman shot seventy six. Nick faldo shot sixty seven That lead had evaporated by the tenth. Tentpole the eleventh hole So you never know. But i would be. I would be shocked. But i remember being augusta national in in One thousand nine hundred ninety six and remember all the stories that we were doing. And i did a story for. Espn that night. And i said you know it would be shocking if greg norman didn't win but if he doesn't it will be one of the biggest stories and we won't soon forget it and here. We are all these years later. Talking about it at augusta national right now.

How Bandon Dunes revolutionized golf

"There aren't many golf courses in the world that are better than Bandon dunes but bannon's lasting legacy isn't as a golf course it doesn't idea. That north. America can have true links golf and even better that it can have remote golf courses that can turn into bucket lists destinations. Plenty of course have followed in. BANDON footsteps like cabot links to Nova Scotia or sand Bali and Wisconsin. It's a movement. But it sure didn't start that way. I'm to chair on today's drop zone. Here's how one course in nowhere Oregon turned into an entire movement all by accident. The story of Bandon, Dunes begins with David McLay Kidd A. Scottish. Twenty six year old who had dreamt of becoming a golf course architect but had no concrete path to making that happen. So back in nineteen ninety, four I was twenty six years old and working for the. Detail in Scotland My father was a the golf courses manager and I was working for the development division of. Detail effectively. And I was hating all the Gulf Bar and I was a wannabe golf course architect type I'd done a couple little things but nothing really of any note. And Mike Kaiser Have Franko Rick Summers who's the current owner of PGA Goldman? Zine And Mike said to rick SARS I've got this piece of land on the Oregon coast a WanNa build on authentic Scottish Irish links experience who you guys she'd higher I'm thinking of hiring you know told Vase Your Jack Nicklaus or Pete Dye or a Rick said will you should hire a Scottish golf course architect if you want something authentic in a Mike Chuckled and said, I, would but the old died one hundred years ago. At this point, it wasn't just mcclay kid who was an unknown the Golf World Mike Kaiser was to. He'd made his money by bringing a fresh mindset to the greeting card business decades before need proven to be a smart businessman. But. That doesn't guarantee any success as a wannabe course developer. As an outsider is first instinct might have been a hire a big name architect someone from the establishment to give his project credibility. But maybe he had it in the back of his mind that fellow outsider would be a more proper fit. So he invites David McLay kidd the remote site on the Oregon coast to check things out. and. So I arrived on the state. With my dad. So holding my hand and we will the sixteen hundred acres I remember. Mike Mike is wasn't there. I'd never ma'am yet. He's a caretaker shorty who even then in the seventeenth was our chaperone for the week. So David and his father walked the property with his caretaker shorty Dow and they're thinking themselves. What if you're doesn't know any better? What if he might hire a no name? But shorty keeps asking mcclay kids, business card and eventually he gives them one. In short, he pulls out a stack of cards. He's recently collected mcclay. Kid realizes that every major golf course architect has walked the same site and I realized that might Kaiser was pretty astute and he was he was looking at every possible option as an architect to do this. This set something off in mcclay kid if he's going to be an underdog, well, he may as well act like one. At that point I think I go a little a fire in my Bailey probably because I realized that this guy was never going to hire me I have anything to show I there was no way I was twenty six. So he's going to hire some big name but Hale I'm not going to leave here with my gender my chest I'm gonNA leave with my hailed high. So I went to the local drugstore I bought a dozen sheets of poster board and a few marker pains and I rule what would now be considered a powerpoint presentation. I did it on poster boards with a Marker Pens And Mike Kaiser flew in a few days later in his private jet with some of the executives from Cambridge sports and some of his buddies and I laid. half a dozen or dot com you remember no posterboards that told Mike Kaiser this rich guy from Chicago with a great piece of land, what it would take to build. A true authentic links course in America, and I did so with kind a little chip on my shoulder because I figured with my relatively limited knowledge of Link School Golf in America that there was nothing authentic I was told Pebble beach was a links course doesn't look like it to me I. I was told you know the latest Gulf course by whichever. PGA Pro you WanNa pick a that was in the mountains of southern California was a links course was the farthest thing from the truth. So when I painted I a scenario to Mike Kaiser I said, Hey, if you really want to build a true links course in America years, what it takes and I had a half a dozen points and there were absolutely critical. Such as. You can't have golf carts. There's no golf carts in the British isles, you walk. There's no fancy clubhouse I on the ocean. That's where you put the best green. The clubhouse is back in a corner. The base land is Gulf. The fairways aren't flat. They're pitching in tumbling. There aren't any lakes. There's no babbling streams. There's no car pass. The grasses we use these old style firm grasses van may even have told him there's no arrogation. Can't quite remember what if I said none on a of the bunkers aren't these or MIBA Cloverleaf shapes there these pulp bunkers. Are there to punish the bowl not to Be Up on the week. And as I went through this explanation of links Gulf. Mike had a wry smile on his face and in his. Cohorts laughed openly I load at the ridiculousness of such thought in the sophisticated Gulf market of the United States. I assume that when my father and I left the very next day, we would never hear from Mike Kaiser Regain are crazy Scottish ideas of goal in America were just that while. American. Goal for would traits all the way to the southern. Shores to play golf in the wind and rain and walk and find themselves in eight. Pulp on Kerr surrounded by facie grasses and pitching fear waste were not a single flat lies available such a scenario could never ever work.

Mookie Betts makes history with another 3-home run game

"So mookie betts last. Night Raby. Three homers Ford does in a game for the sixth time in his career Johnny. Sammy Sosa the only other players do that and movie didn't in a thousand fewer games basically in Mayes and fifteen hundred fewer than So when you look our call you red sox fan but you grew up there for goodness sakes and you see mookie bats, the red sox traded away it off to a start like this and avenue another three homer game. What do you think? Well I. Think it happens on the same day that the red sox give up seventeen runs and look at a single late in the Celtics and Bruins I think both lost and the Patriots are going to start a season without Tom Brady I think this is I think this is a reminder of the come up in Boston sports fans are are about to have to deal with and the next few years now I mean look it's It's a tough pill to swallow for red SOx nation to know that. One of the transformational players of his generation in an era when Mike Trout is playing mu batches is going to be in the conversation. You know there's there's a Jack Nicklaus Arnold. Palmer. Gary Player. There's the Tiger Woods Phil. Mickelson for Awhile, David Duval conversation. I, mean my child's GonNa. Have you know mookie Betts in Clayton Kershaw and that's what this group is going to be about and to know that he was once part of your franchise and now he's not and a franchise paid him a lot of money and you believe your franchise and was capable of doing the same. For those that are moving in dying with the Red Sox I know it sucks. It really really does it's It's just a it's just a reminder and he's got to be that guy we all grew up with them that. Whatever he does he does to a level that few others can do it. So the three six times you know that's the same guy that has four. That's the same guy that bowls three hundred games. He does those things and and there'll be no surprise. You know when he wins more world series wins MVP's that's that guy he's the guy we all grew up with he's just doing it at the highest athletic level.

"Radio, so Tiger Woods made his return. For the first time. So the PJ got their restart, although now is John Rob's world and everybody's just living in it. He wanted to know Tournament over the weekend, and now he is the number one player in the world but lost in Tiger and his comeback. He did make the cut. Was Jack Nicklaus over the weekend at his tournament, saying in that earlier this year he had tested positive along his wife for covert 19. At 80 years of age. Yeah, Barbara I guess she had a little bit worse than he did, but but for the moment, no excuse to me She was asymptomatic, and he had it worse, and she did. But he said, I mean, telling CBS yesterday I was watching it during the rain delay. When he dropped that hammer like 80. My mom lives here with us. She's 79 Now we're quarantining from her. Cause we just went out Red Lodge, Montana, my girls and I did. My wife stayed here, but What? We're giving it two weeks of complete separation from from my mom. She's in that scene. You right there with Jack when he said that yesterday. Up being a damn, you're popped off the couch, man. When he said, we were lucky. It wasn't that that bad for us, it's been much worse for others. But what do you hear guys like Jack 80 years of age, right? And it is his bribe. Barbara, who's you know, same age. And she was a symptom. That's the crazy thing about this damn bug man. She's 80 and a symptomatic. And you know, and then you have Freddie Freeman with the Atlanta Braves Gonna die 104.5 fever. Putting ice bags on the man. Right mean get his temperature down. "However. If you send me a really good joke, Jack Nicklaus says. I want to shake the hand of whoever wins my tournament. I've tested negative. What's the harm? You don't have to shake my hand, but I will extend it is a gesture. That's long been a part of the tradition. He's always done it, He says. He's going to it, son. It wasn't a pandemic Last year, Jack and he wasn't 80 years old either. And I know if you test negative, and I test negative well, then I guess we could shake hands. But maybe since we last got tested, the germ jumped on your fingers. The point is, it just sends the signal contrary to what we are all supposed to be doing, And it's also in violation of the PGA Tour, health and safety rule. Really, They don't want Lloyd in hand, though. There's no handshakes. There's no high fives. It's why I don't know if you've watched any golf the last few weeks, but there and it's what you'll see I I think it's what you'll see when the MBA starts playing here soon it virtual high five really virtual fist bumps and all that. All the science all the technology in the world, and the thing that will ultimately save us is a thin layer of cloth across your lips and nose folks. And then just don't touch folks. And so some people say, Well, in that case, you're not going to violate my right to do so. I'm gonna touch folks. Even if you're negative. And I'm negative and we therefore are safe. Couldn't you just help push the ball forward for the rest of us? And just send that signal out? It's time for speed jokes. It's sponsored by Team Hochberg. "I. How did you get on the chess? Beat in the first place? So I get really interested in these really need sports that. People are super invested in Ashwari. Kumar is an international features writer for Espn Lake if you're going to which. Of People Are Watching these chess tournaments that you wouldn't even know where that's happening in. Iceland. Or Finland, and so I had this curiosity so I was thinking so Bobby Fisher was such a huge part of chests in the US what Ron Labor is tennis. What Jack Nicklaus's to golf? That's what Bobby Fischer is to chess. Bobby Fisher of the United States will finally meet Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in Belgrade Yugoslavia, but the chess championship of the world plus a purse of one, hundred, thirty, eight, thousand five hundred dollars, the richest prize for a head-to-head confrontation in any sport, but boxing. So who is the next Bobby Fisher? So I went to Saint Louis last year to sort of figure out what is going on in the chess world, so saint Louis has sort of become this chess capital of the country. Let's start with the basics here. What is a chess grandmaster? And what does it take to become one? Usually what happens? Is this International Chess Federation F. And they have this point systems so chessplayers. Lead different tournaments in accumulate these spines that. Gets them to a certain level of expertise, and they are then title the grandmaster, which is in fact, the highest I do that. A chess player can be awarded by International Chess Federation usually these. Players between the age of ten and fourteen, and so they go through these rigorous tournaments one after the other parents take them all over the world. And the get the title by around thirteen fourteen, and then they start to perfect the art of being perfect, just player. So you mentioned Bobby Fisher. Who is probably the most famous chess player all time? Actually is definitely the most famous chess player of all time. Who are the stars of the field today? The poster by of chess is at the moment Magnus Carlsen. Calzon is the best in the world. The youngest number one ever and no one can explain to you how he does what he does. It seems to come from another world, which is why he's become known as the Mozart of chess. He's from Norway. He sort of had this. Has this bad boy live to him? He's like interesting. He'll drop these nuggets about other players. You make jokes about his opponents. He talks trash social chicken. How do you not? He's GonNa do the same. Yeah the lack of comas is astounding. And quite disappointing. He talks acts. Yeah for sure sorta like that kind of Worcester wise. He's called the golden boy of chess. And then this. Is. Bobby Ana crew art, there's this Chinese grandmaster Ding Laren and then USA's Wesley so and Kara Nakimora. Really Good Armenia has live on Romanian so these are some of like the famous players at the moment that go up against each other all the time. So I the grandmaster that you decided to focus on with your story, the one who lives in Saint Louis is actually Italian. His name is Fabiano Caruana. Who is in? How did he get here? Fabiano Caruana is the number two seed in the world. He's an Italian American chess grandmaster. He became a grandmaster at fourteen years of age, fourteen years, eleven, months, and twenty eight to be exact, and he at that time was the youngest grandmaster in the history of Italy in the United States. E was sort of beg to be the next big thing in in US chess and he came back now. He has an apartment in Saint Louis. He lives there and he sort of boot. BOOT his life from scratch, and he was never like the big personality like Norris Magnus columnist. He's the guy that will is very chill loves video games and let us work to the talk to his justice stories about that call in the next Bobby Fisher like the next big thing. He's the one person that can actually dig down. Magnus, Carlsen in the world championship and become the next world champion. So what does? Chess match in a grand masters tournament. Actually look like. How does it play out? Okay so two grandmasters shake each other's hands. sit down across from each other is chessboard. This o'clock next to them that the are constantly looking at. This goes on for at least six hours right every day, and so during these six hours, the brain has to have most oxygen supply. Which means your heart is functioning three times faster than on any given. And because of that sustained higher blood pressure, and sustained higher level of activity by the heart and the rain, the body goes through intense physical. Energy lost during. A chess game that lasts six to seven to sometimes eat hours said.

"Big show because I'm broadcasting from my home last show we did at the Broadmoor was back on April fifteenth and the following Saturday the Broadmoor closed because of the corona virus and the plan is not to re open again until round Memorial Day weekend so we're doing a show from home probably do that for the next couple weeks and we hope you enjoyed the last few weeks as we played some pre recorded shows of T. degree may may do that as well everything's kind of in a state of flux as the world is right now and of course there's no master's tournament this week to talk about because of the corona virus and everything that is going on not only in golf but in sports and in the world in general one thing I wanted to talk about and do for you today was to honor our masters tradition something that we've been doing on the show for the past decade and a half or so we always play the opening ceremonies to their masters which is the ceremonial hitting a golf balls by some of the past greats it used to be people like Byron Nelson and then it went to Arnold Palmer and after he passed away a couple years ago the onerous gun the last couple of years to Jack Nicklaus and Gary player that's one of the traditions we like to do here on TD green the other is something that happened a few years back there was just great we talked to Dave Loggins who wrote the master's name you know that the piano notes that CBS have been using for over thirty five forty years now and when everybody hears those three notes to open the broadcast or on a commercial or promo they know that it's going to be the masters what a lot of people don't know is that there is a vocal version of that song so we got our hands on that the vocal version of the song a few years back and we also got in touch with Dave Loggins hadn't come on the show and explain how you wrote it we kind of marched everything together too little segment that we make our masters tradition it's one tradition we're not gonna let slide so here it is welcome to the playing of the eighty second Masters Tournament thank you for coming out this morning I'm Fred Ridley chairman of Augusta national golf club the tradition of honorary starters this is special and fun way to start our tournament every year this year we are privileged to once again have with us two of the greatest golfers who have ever lived man whose legacies will live forever throughout the history of Augusta national Mr Jack Nicklaus Mr Gary player.

"Saturday what a great day great great day in masters history April eleven P. as in nineteen sixty six on April eleventh Jack Nicklaus became the first golfer to win back to back masters in for Phil won his first major Pappy B. the masters one again and six in on April eleventh the twenty ten he won his third green jacket but golf like most other sports has been abandoned for more on that we're joined by two time US open champion three time all American at the university of Florida in the north any for somebody that's had golf running and coursing through their veins for their entire life tell me what it's like to have a master's push back to have no open championship and then to have two masters within a span of five months is twenty twenty will cross over to April of twenty twenty one yes the Bennetts okay first of all thanks for having me and it's it's a crazy time it's so weird to be in the month of April and not be gone the entire month of sitting at home just like everybody else's it's going to be you know let's hope so hopefully we can get through the next couple months and things get better and we can see some golf while leading up to the PGA and August do we have any idea that's going to happen absolutely not but you were hoping that can happen and then it's a amazing run of golf over the next twelve months really you look at the fact you have seven majors in our our Ryder Cup been two FedEx cups and you know so much so much golf over the next twelve months it's going to be amazing any what we miss about what do you miss about just being in Augusta on Saturday because so many people you know there were out like I know where Jack I was when Jack when an eighty six right so many people stories aren't really about Jack's story right it's about your story relating to that what's your story when you missing about a gust on the weekend well I think you know the fact that I started my first masters was nineteen sixty six as a fan my first one I played in his nineteen seventy six so basically starting in nineteen seventy six I've been there for almost all of so just the fact that I'm I'm sitting in Wisconsin the second week in April it is it is absolutely craziness but I just you know you miss so much about it and I you know over the last fifteen years twenty years we did some stuff of van pelt early this weekend the fact that we've done work together there for the last twenty years and all the people you work with at at Augusta in the the stories in the the houses that we stayed the same four of us of statins in the house for the last fifteen or sixteen years and that's just yeah it's it's chaos it's absolute chaos and and then of course you've got one of the greatest golfing events if not sporting events going on at the same time you're having a great time okay let ME father through a seventy six is your first year there yes we we make a ton that we make a ton of a tiger ninety seven in twenty nineteen Jack in eighty six where were you in seventy five which is arguably one of the great masters finishes ever with with Jack and why scoff and Johnny Miller I was not playing at the masters I hadn't qualified I I qualified in it for the seventy six masters but having a high definition that seventy five US open that's how I got my first masters I think back then it was the topic eight or something got yeah do you have the world rankings and all the other ways the guys right in today so is basically how you played and other major championships was one of the ways you got it we're watching the seventy five matched you know one in seventy five I you know the last whatever they would televise you know I'm I'm I'm guessing I might've been playin in Harrisburg home which was one of bentonite Mississippi that was opposite the masters there's I know I played there a couple years I might have played there in seventy five wow Andy let me ask you about the delay and what you think it will do for Tiger Woods would benefit him do you think it could hurt him well I think you.

"Of golf four different entities run the four major championships and then you've got the PGA tour which handles the majority of the schedule and they all need to get together to figure this thing out we got a little bit over the Christmas break that off the schedule to be played later this fall what is always a great field and the masters having it in November at least the one of the good things from that is we'll have two masters possibly in five months that's a pretty nice thing to think about the masters originally scheduled to start Thursday eighteen time major winner Jack Nicklaus was on get up on the state of golf in its marquee tourney during these uncertain times well I think right there pretty good job of it than that but I guess is a special place to me every time I drive down magnolia lane in search no different today than it was in nineteen fifty nine the first time I drove down it is a special place in special drives they're just as they talk about tradition like no what no other and I think it's right it is just is just a place to drive when you go there you're you're you're in a different world what are you missing this morning Jackie you were spent this morning with Gary player hitting the ceremony what I'm teaching what are you missing this one how about missing much I don't think I think we're just sort of try and all sort of stay home and try to do the right thing and you know I'm I don't I don't miss hitting that opening tee shot back at that hurts for a week and you know I I as we could talk all for just a moment here a researcher prosecutors sent me a note about that your records in majors are just ridiculous not only did you win eighteen times but I'm gonna read them here you had thirty seven top two finishes in majors forty six top three is fifty six top fives in seventy three top tens what quality do you think it is in an athlete in any sport to be at his or her best in the most important moments well I don't know whether it's a quality I suppose this desire my desire was to play in the majors minors I was to prepare for them let's try to be at my best and I think that eighty percent of the time I probably wasn't my best because I prepared for and I want to do this that's what that was for tournaments a year like I start to set my sights on that yeah when we got to him and I was sure I was ready to play to gives NFL teams a virtual work out while the Texans Avenue wideout that's next this is ESPN radio.

Coronavirus and golf: How the professional tours are affected

"Let me ask you this about the tour and like all this stuff is going because you talked about the guys being on the golf course and. I really don't blame these news. We try to play golf because if they look if I stay away from people doing nothing else then I might as well get at here but like how do you think the tour is going to be affected by all of this there are affected a bunch of one? They still haven't even postponed or canceled events. That scheduled may twenty first the ink at colonial. And you know one of the events that that they're talking about trying to move since they moved. Somebody majors the US Open now where it got moved. Its date is open. So Jack Nicklaus tournament the memorial wants to move out of its slot into where the US Open was but it's still scheduled to go on in. That's the last week of. May which doesn't seem possible to that's going to happen. They hope and help or like the idea that the US Open is saying. Now we're not going to be here. Is somebody else's like that all right? Yeah or tournament like the open championship which isn't scheduled till July is like we out all next year in. May there like an eighty news like Nah. And that's the thing Bo you know man. I'm I'm optimistic. I try to see the silver lining. I tried to look at the good in everything but realistically to think we're going to be playing in June is just it. I don't see it happening. I just don't see us being ready to play golf in six weeks when there are still places that are on complete lockdown. I don't understand how they think that they're going to pull this off now even in my opinion first week of August which is when the PGA championship is supposed to happen. Even that seems to me as a more hopeful than realistic thing. Not only because we don't know where we be as a country as far as where this pandemic virus is by then. We have no idea whether it is going to be a phase two or phase three and the fact that the PGA championship is still scheduled to be held in San Francisco. Yes I if xactly Gulf has never been the first to do anything so to think that golf would be the first sport to come back. Golf is a sport that is more image conscious than the NFL. That I know that sounds crazy but think about this. You are not going to hear the golf as Elliot Nothing. Have you ever heard of a Golfer have you heard of a Golfer getting a DUI other than Tiger Woods? 'cause it was tiger so he's bigger than just the Gulf News but have you ever heard of a PGA tour pro given the Dui. Like you think it ain't happened right exe- so the thought of Gov being the Guinea pig like man. We'll bring all our guys back. Because you know golf will be the easiest thing for social distancing. Yes inside the ropes. It's easy for social distancing Hauer player's GonNa get tournament how litter power. They literally getting from the airplane to hotel. Where we're staying. Where are they going to empty? Who who changing the sheets right and then when you get to the gut like getting a rental car you can rent a car from somebody. I'll be working rental counter and then when you get to the golf course you just pulling out in the Congo and straight to the driving rains. You're going into the locker room who's WHO's opening locker room door. Who's working in you? Go to the bathroom cleaning up. Who changed sort of paper or you won't eat. Who's WHO's GonNa Food? Who's bring the food who stole in the trash out like? Who's doing the dishes like those? And that's not you ain't got to the courts yet now. You get course okay. We're GONNA put this on TV. Well who's filming? You've got to have a camera do. Okay Yeah we got a camera guy but the camera guys not the producer. Oh Yeah. Where's the camera picture on bow to? We need court to go to the trump who's trump who drove the trump who's producer who's directed where those people at Lake everything that goes into a production of a golf broadcast. Ken Be even bigger than Football Basketball Baseball and hockey. Because at least those venues are all a one static place so you could put cameras up in a stadium and field ain't GonNa Change. It doesn't work like that with golf when one week. The golf course looks like this in the next week is completely different. Everything gotta move is a traveling circus so to think that golf would be the one to go. Hey we'll come out. I will do a I. The Gulf was the second to last the shut it down. It was golfing NASCAR so in the long run when Gov comes back there I think of is gonNA come back without fans like I think every other sport will at first and I think golf will do okay in the long run. But I think we're GonNa wait longer than what we think for golf to come back. But and here's my silver lining. This is also where I love. What the Masters did where the Masters said we're coming back in November. The masters is the last thing on the schedule. Movember Ninety two fifteen and again talk about buffer nate. Just out not only did they come back. And we're GONNA do this in November. They also have already said. If you've got a ticket Komo come on in you know other sport has been no other waning. Tried to say only Augusta will be like not only. Are we putting the masses on? We're letting the Patriots into but we won't make that Egg Salad. We're going to make those divisional tea. Sandwiches come gifts on and I think November. Not only is realistic. But I love that. The masters is at least for me. The biggest beacon at the end of this dark tunnel. I tell you this though. Y'All come back I ain't GonNa meet you there right like they say like they just go be somebody out there. That's like now I'm good is somebody's wife. That's like yo you ain't going out on this trip like his eight nine. This ain't the Olympics though. That's what's funny. I remember when Owen down for the Olympics. Zeka you know guys were like I know plenty of dudes whose girlfriends and wives would like if you go. Don't come on you know. He you know he might put us in. The spot and jazz were like. I'm not even going to go I. I'm any worth you know. I'M I won't be happy home really but the masters though let's say right now there's plenty of dudes if that came down at the masters they are going to be like. Yo suitcases right over. She she she she. She want me to call Uber. Or because I'm going to the mass you don't WanNa go. You Ain't gotta go but one of us is going well. That tate is last thing I would ask you because I just thought of this while we were here. Are these golfers paying their caddies out like how I still pay my housekeeper? Even though she's not keeping the House I got the same thing Nancy so most golfers yes are trying to take care of their caddies in some way or form. We have to remember how cat is get paid. Caddies get a weekly paycheck and then you get a percentage of what the Golfer wins. But if the government's not winning anything where it becomes difficult is for. We all know the big super rich dude by all the big name guys like rory no Tiger Dustin Johnson of Brooks Kapka you name it Jordan Speed Rickie Fowler just Thomas Jon Rahm like those dudes of yes. They're going to be taken care of their dude with the guys who have a tough time on rookies. So the guys who came from the korn-ferry tour or the guys that this is only their second or third year on the PGA tour and they made them millions like those they could be struggling a little bit to one of the guys who I'm friends with a WHO's academy and doesn't caddy for a big named guys told me that his guy is sending them a little bit just a little bit every week just to help everybody still got bills and whatnot. So I'm sure that there are some guys that are not in a position to do that so there are probably some caddies that are hurt. But that's the world we live in right now so everybody's anxious to kind of get back to work pay

saying to a Tonga via lower has broken his wrist twice which would be new information and by the way they don't say which wrist I'm assuming it's just left one his throwing one of France's right when I'm not as concerned Lombardi said media draft experts don't consider durability and injury histories enough putting together their mock drafts he says so he's brittle you can't deny it you can't deny it he said two teams have flunked hunger by lower on his physical it comes down to this the fear like what is going to scare you more the fear of taking him or the fear of passing on him I understand if Miami takes him and you don't plan this first year but if you're trading up to get to a that's when the fear really sets in if you say I gotta go up two spots if he if he's there at five okay but if I now to go up to three and I have to give up on number one to the lines to go to three to ensure I get him because it it feel I think the Chargers would be interested in him and the dolphins are saying they might be interested in Justin Herbert okay is there a mystery team that might want to go up and get him and I know it sounds crazy because they have Derek Carr and they have Marcus Mariota but I do wonder about sure as a raider I they have draft picks I I don't know because nobody's going to show you their cards I mean you're crazy to tell anybody the truth nowadays and that's why I keep thinking all right we're eventually going to get the truth it'll start to leak out maybe two days before the draft that's when you start to get some real information here but I can't imagine that if if the Miami Dolphins have to move up in again and offer up a number one pick to alliance I don't know that's when the fear starts to set in a fear of taking I'm not passing on the club we're gonna break the internet just based on that statement raiders like to a question mark that's very very somebody a lot of sense somebody is going to be interested in one of these quarterbacks if they are eight to it happens every year it did and I don't know that there's always a mystery team where you go on I didn't know that they were interested in him what are you willing to give up to go up and get him is somebody going to wait for Jordan love to fall into their lap like if you if the dolphins could wait for Jordan love to develop that might make more sense if you really like him and you have Ryan Fitzpatrick at least for a year because Jordan love is not gonna be ready for probably two years at the earliest but yeah a little bit of time a little bit of misinformation usually thrown out there but you know that's Michael Barney who is well respected and says that he thinks too was broken that wrist twice Jack Nicklaus will join us coming up in ten minutes from now here on the Dan "Mid October Jack Nicklaus said with people did not want to hear what I'm with him I don't see how you can play the masters this year postponed for now not cancelled masters made that distinction on Friday with that it's time for straight talk brought to you by straight talk wireless former masters champion Gary player believes that the masters and the folks at Augusta the decision made makers made the right play I love the idea that they postponing it and not canceling it it will be a very sad thing not to have an aghast it in my lifetime anyway that I can remember of so they made a very very wise decision and you know it's such a wonderful Dorman and people come from all over the globe and it does golf such a lot of good it'd be a shame just to cancel it so I'm delighted to hear they get postponement I'm not in a position to make a decision for Augusta and but for me and I would definitely say doesn't have the tournament if you're not gonna have any people around there that would just be such an anti climax that's the thing that's made this tournament I mean I know my last year and and any every year playing with Arnold and Jack guy coming down the line the people made it you know it would just was it is a special ambience that is not it's not you can't reproduce it and I would say do not have the time and without the people that is Gary player Jack Nicklaus eighteen time major champion believes a masters is not going to happen in twenty twenty L. practicality I don't think there's any way that that are postponing that I can't see any way that they want in a player later date I think it's just how in the world for the working into the schedule what it wouldn't be fair any other tournament this later so you know I think I think we're probably going to miss the masters this year that's just my opinion but I think it's a logical sense that is Jack Nicklaus Friday on SportsCenter we heard Gary player saying that it would be hard to play the gusto without the fans are own Matt berry agrees I don't know that the masters was gonna be played accreditations to begin with I think that was a lock that that probably wasn't going to happen a girl I I disagree at that point if you are going to allow patrons you don't play the tournament because I don't know that what it felt like the masters Dr roars and so I you know I told you that we can either cancel the masters or play it but it has to be without fans you would have chose cancel yes no I don't I would I I was relieved that I was fine you know what with the win the tournament when the NC double a tournament all this stuff from happening with conference tournaments the crowds I was like all right if I hold a separate unit about conference tournaments in general anyway but I when they said the NC double a turn it was gonna be played a lot of Kratos like within why not just postpone it that is not bearing on the madding caddy podcast it is sports center all night on ESPN radio Sirius XM channel eighty Kevin.

"And so for the wind so it's essentially play the course you'll get to play that seven hole for those that that want to play so your theory is not like many people talk about Jack Nicklaus that you got to play like Jack to to play one high got worse I sat right okay I could we go to let him go because I heard he's he's on about a paste of for a forty five hour work week so we better we're going to let him thank you so much and the we're casting I appreciate the time you put into the PJ as well and are a much and we'll see we'll see on the line you guys are good all right there's a there's a Clippard they had got professional here and stopping the golf shop if you need little trinket to take home it's golf shop is right near the gym the UPS vineyard vines shop so if you if you don't see it there so whether we are you go Tom Spencer is back with us for a few minutes and Tom I know you need to get going let me pose the question to you that I just posed Eric and you didn't get to hear his answers because you're out of the room but water two holes you think will will be the key is to buy a one in a winning champion today well we we hope it comes down to eighteen anytime a golf turn it comes down to the eighteenth or seventy second hole in our world of television and also our our world the radio it's good good for the audience good for the broadcasters good for the drama theatrics so I sense even though the unusual element today is you've got a separate leader board at least at the outset with three guys kind of you know away from the pack so to speak you could see this thing tighten up a little bit down the stretch but I would love to see you know a player with a shot at that green or Evey to wage depending on wind direction who knows to make a birdie after that going backwards all all all thrown another par five the fourteenth hole which you know really played a big pivotal role in the U. S. open just last summer Gary woodland member I think you had his caddy run a little long with you a couple weeks later and serenity artist through the the dynamic do I go for the screen or not they decided that yes the the the smart play rather than the wedge hit this is a rarity match where you hear that a two hundred fifty or three what is a higher percentage shot than a hundred yards sand wedge with that was the case you're you're gonna have to destroy welcome to me time well rounded Blodgett was let's get this thing pin high and not run the risk of a wedge that spins down the hill or yeah over the green whatever they made birdie and when when the term and so I don't say the two par fives which might be the only birdie holes conceivably on the back nine today will will decide this that I'm I'm gonna go the opposite and say to par threes I'm gonna be interested to see what they do one seven you know I at that were you know maybe your stated this it's not a double bogey hole today I don't think I could be but I'll be interested to see what they do there and then I've I'm always enthralled where the pin placement is on seventeen you know that that kidney shaped green and it's it's over to the left and I don't if you see a lot of history there I'm we manage your home yeah pretty traditional Sunday position out there yeah yeah it's that like the watching chip in the opposition Nicholas one iron right in the end what Lynn shipping last year out why because I mean exactly in the U. S. open exactly yeah and we've got a couple good scores just just for old score update as we right here Matt Jones two hundred through for he is tied for fifth Matt every read the first two holes he is now four shots back Phil Mickelson missed the second fairway looks like he hit it just short of the green and and got up and down again chipped up what I haven't seen it posted yet yeah I'm looking at here actually he did he did birdie birdie the second also fill is now tied Nick Taylor who is in better shape and got on the front edge and did not make birdie so so Phil is now tied for the lead so right and and that so to your point John transit that existed yesterday Mickelson still getting up and down so that's a good start for him and Nick Taylor I noticed just a minute ago missed about a four foot pine and not saying that's due to nerves or anything else but we have seen several short putts miss today already amongst the leaders so mark McCumber doing coverage here and you guys remember mark in early interments including at the Olympic club said this was the hardest course on tour in his day to make short pots inside of four feet break wind when putting services except or even though these courses are in magnificent shape there's always some little nuances when you have a lot of traffic it up tournament so have snow is someone to watch we're gonna say goodbye to you to later guys look for to catch up and talking with you after it's all over great day you know it great we'll see you around for work on that tan yeah okay when burned one of them to have a great have a great CBS today and we'll be watching here in the media center yep okay as we will see you about forest today so or do it thank you please check that all right morning okay there's Tom Spencer and we're gonna take it up till the top of the hour and we will then come back three to five today and and hopefully we'll have a shot at it so with the win match we got all that in the boating world we call that small craft warning so okay and when you look at the swell which is in with the players are worried about today but you can tell by the the direction the wind which way the swell is going to be on and the spacing between the swells that's we we or safety factors in the glow in the in the voting omnicell here word for it let me tell you about my friends at H. and M. marine who know all about that stuff there up in Sausalito they are the Chris craft dealer for northern California you've known the Chris craft craft name for years you've got to see the new models you can see them in their new show room in Sausalito wow are they cool HM marine is your one stop shop for all your mechanical.

Analyst Brandel Chamblee on all things golf

"All Right Ladies Gentlemen we are joined by a very special guest a friend of ours ars Panama on probably a handful types now. But I think it's been at least a year so he is the lead analyst for Golf Channel One of the best analysts in the game. I got a whole intro. Here wait till you see all this he is a PGA tour winner the Greater Vancouver Open in nineteen ninety eight. He is now defunct finished well about. We're not worried about that. He finished tied for Eighteenth at the nineteen ninety nine masters never made the cut of the PGA Championship. Which I want to ask you about tied for forty fourth at the two thousand and one? US Open tied for sixty second at the open championship in two thousand one. Pretty good stretch author of the anatomy of greatness. Which I've read Mr brand-new shambling? Welcome come to the show my friend. Yeah those last few terms are not defunct. They're still they're still they're still up and running And it's always a pleasure to join you guys Who's there in the studio? We've got myself guys. Would you like to introduce yourself Frankie here brandon. Trent also got lurch. That could to meet you four to it so you tell us a little bit pre show that you just came from a little shoot with rory. I wanted to address royal because I was just reading this article earlier. This week. That came out independent. Paul kimmage was going on with Rory. You know nothing's off limits a an amazing acing insightful interview and he mentioned you rory in this interview and there are some negative words that you have received leave before some positive words but I thought we would start with some very positive words from rory and what happened was I played a little clip from year guys discussion on live from from or golf central or whatever it was right after the Patrick read winning the masters a few years ago and the clip. You essentially Go through how this has to be the most disappointed. The point that rory's Ben since leaving Augusta in two thousand eleven you talk about Amnesia from his first tee shot that day which if anybody remembers he hits it a million yards right off the first tee and you talk about that had to creep into the rest of his game and rory goes on to say it hurts when you're on the receiving end and sometimes I think And sometimes all that stuff hurts but I think brandon was one of the smartest guys in Gulf. He's brilliant I like him. He's giving me a book on. Bobby Locke I have it here. So so what are your thoughts and hearing those kinds of comments from Roy a that that type of stuff you know it hurts to hear but also be that he says you're the smartest guys in the game. Yeah you know when you said that in a chair where somebody asked every two minutes. What do you think Why did he do that what you know? What reasons did he? You know made him win. Why did he lose those kinds of things? I mean you have to very often say critical things if people you really like and admire and sometimes you have very complimentary things about people that you don't particularly care for it's just the nature of the job and you know and also the nature of Of all of us that I could wax on for an hour about all the great attributes and the one thing everybody will remember just one critical comment Has All the time I'll do interviews with people and go on and on and on about a particular player for I don't know Ten minutes and then I might say one critical thing and then that'll be the headline and in the story or the podcast or whatever I get totally understand it But it's just hard of the. It's a part of the job I have it. So it's the nature of the job. I have in the analysis business. And you know if you say everything's great and when something comes along. That really is great. While you've desens- Does the whole world and they're not going to believe you so you know he set up there. At least I do I sit there and I just try to as best I can but shots in historical context and when they're great you know without being hyperbolic great when there are awful without being pollick awful so he goes on to sort of talk about how the Rangers that day. He had a left mess. Then he comes out to the first day and he hits it miles right right and your analysis was obviously that though that that shot is clearly. He's going to remember that throughout the entire day at affected the rest of his round. Like how could you tell that. Anita from that. Shot from whatever's going on with the swing was affecting the rest of his entire route. I it's informed by I years and years and years and years of struggling with those issues myself and You know I mean we all have those issues. You had a horrible horrible shot off the first tee or somewhere around the rest of the round in particular when you get to a place where that miss is now Even more vulnerable people because of a penalty. Then they're gonNA favor it and predictably miss it the opposite direction are they gonNA make nuanced changes to their offspring. So I've I've spent the last twenty years of my life watching golf. The way radiologists looks at X.. Rays you know I. I'm I'm all in I'm all allies and I am I research every detail of it and you know it's it's a it's an educated. Guess I guess if you want to call it what it really was but Roy May differ with me later on in that interview. He said he forgot about. It doesn't think about it and and and again I say you know. There is a crucial crucial role of Amnesia. The maintenance power of every athlete you have to be able to forget the inability to forget is infinitely more more devastating than an inability to remember for an athlete. You've got to be able to forget the bad stuff Years ago there was a people talk about about this interview that Jack Nicklaus gave or this speech rather than dynamics gave where he said he'd never missed a pot on the last hole that he needed to make and a man held his arm Arma said. Excuse me Mr Nicholas just last week I was watching you and a PGA tour champions event you had a four hundred or on the last. Oh you missed it and maybe you just kind how to forget that one. and Mr Jackson let me repeat at Never Mr Putt on the last hole of the tournament that I needed to make and the man in the crabbers incredulous and later on he went up and talked to Bob. Tell this man sin. Why wouldn't Jag just admit it? And and Bob said well hold on a second. That's how you think right and Manson absolutely got admit go so you're telling the greatest athlete of all time that he should think how you think you're far often the greatest athlete of all time or maybe. We should just all jacking and again. That's and Mesia. You need to have it. You need to extract. All of the good there is is to get out of every situation and then forget all the bad and then and then move on. I remember one time. One thing you told me was that you know in order to really get to that level level where you're a we're obviously talking about some of the best players of all time and Roy who's going to be the number one ranked player in the world again here very soon but like to get to that top level you you basis Jason like at some level you have to just beat almost delusional. I mean you have to have almost a blind ridiculous illogical belief in yourself at the Times that like your perfect and even better than you actually think you are and if you don't you just can't make yeah. I mean the game of golf for sport in general and he'd you're constantly attacked by not only the people that you're competing against but by the media and fans listen and then you have your own sort of Uninvited guests in your head. You know this little demons pop up and and you you have to lay waste all of those as best you can and you can do it through sort of you know arrogance you can do it to sort of self delusion but I mean it's rare that the the athletes can get to that place where they need to get through sort of rational balanced Thought and I think that's one of the things that makes rory such an appealing superstar. Superstar is that he's a lot closer to federal Along the lines to be approachable humble symbol And yet the right level of arrogance me word has a negative connotation to but I think it's important to have the right level of arrogance as an athlete but it's so often accompanied by the less poudel aspects of that word. The right level level of it is Well it's it's very present in Roy. So let's fast forward a couple years for his game now he's Mid's mm it's kind of insane has been since two thousand fourteen that he's won a major championship of course had really good years along the way really good finishes very consistent Golf. Where do you see his game? Now a specially as putting I mean I know you've you've done a ton of research on on putting feel versus technical and all that rory's biggest struggle has been the putting were you general thoughts on Roy's game going this year especially as putting. Yeah well I think you made changes in the way. He prepares works out and that has allowed his body to move better so he's less inclined to get injured. Still got this. You know. Full reg motion and lots of speed I think had to go there with the working out with rory I like it. Yeah but I mean He. I as I've when I criticize if you want to use that word his workout routine. I was watching him getting injured. Nagging injuries popping up. I was watching his Co.. PEDS BE DECLINE AT AGE win. It should have been maintaining or even going up and you know I mean he I I said what I said. I couldn't have it with anymore. Caveats and the next day he posted a video game. Self working out I think I've told you this before about a month later I was on a set of live from said that the match-play WDC AC match-play Roy. One in fulfilling an obligation on the set nice come up but I was busy. I was working. I didn't look his direction at intern around when he was walking off no effort to connect with him and I felt a tap on my back and turn around and goes you know I was just fm with you you know. That's that's what we do. I was just having fun because I didn't mean any armide and I was like I get no problem. I didn't take offence to it at all but but I think in the long run. I do believe that rory changed as the way he fares works out so his body moving better less inclined to get injured And then with the short game you know I think he made a good move going to work with the Brad Faxon I say work with. It's really just having conversations with then and Brad is given him permission if you will to be less careful on the grains to be more clinic more reactionary which is crazy because because you know the game of golf right now is just inundated with pseudo-scientists pat sells off as a pseudo scientists and then and then they have cluttered up the game with very complicated esoteric thoughts that are not doing their students any favors whatsoever and I think Roy did a good the job of divorce in himself from those thoughts those ideas and those teachers and he's on the right path and then I think mentally were whatever place he needed to find find he got there towards the end of last year to sort of play his best gall I think. You know the rivalry. They may not call it a rivalry but it certainly feels like looks like rivalry between Brooks So I think that's that's fine tuned. Whatever it was it was missing trump his game into To a great spot so it sets up I think beautifully for Roy going into twenty twenty. What's your relationship like with Brooks Kepco? He kind of tweeted. I love what may or may not have been a clown picture with your face on it. Yeah I don't have a relationship with Brooks I yeah. I don't have a relationship with mini tour players of said forever that my job is sort of incompatible with having relationships toward players to speak about I think Brooks's a heck of talent Allen but I I think Brooks comes to this game sort of a A team sport combative Sports Sports Mentality. I think that's the sort sort of sensibility that he brings to go off. It's not really consistent with the traditions of the game. And it's a gentleman sport I think his comments mints about there'd be no rivalry between him and rory and saying that Roy hadn't won a major championship since he was Plan the PGA tour. which which by the way is ludicrous because it was a professional Golfer and twenty twelve? He just wasn't good enough to play on the stage. That Roy was on. I do believe Roy's won three major championships. Pittsburgh successional dolphins so it was Just disrespectful Not only the traditions of the game. It was disrespectful to rory And I wouldn't be surprised if you know and and sort of a roundabout way Work to motivate rory. Don't know that I'm just guessing but but who wouldn't use that to To motivate them so. I don't think like that face picture. Brandel I don't think you like Brooks did that to you. I think he's had that comment that he wasn't good enough for a long time. He's back I don. I saw it. I thought it was funny. I actually posted a picture of myself with a clown shortly shortly after that in response to his clowns because I it doesn't bother me. I mean it's again it comes with the territory of what I do for a living did that. There's GonNa be some retribution or or Kickback from some of the things. I've said you know I I I said before I mean I'm kind of half joking but I have left a few shows before and thought. Wow I don't really agree with what I said You know sometimes it just comes out wrong. Aw Show true boy. Have I been there gene. How do I get there now? He's talking about that happened. That's breaking segment right there. I mean we. It's it's incredibly feature that sometimes you just start you come from a good place with it. You know you have the information and then by the time it all comes out. You're like what the fuck did I say seriously. Yeah I don't would agree with what I just said. It happens from time. TV or radio or PODCASTS. It's a little golf. I mean just get it wrong. Ties make mistakes as a book. You know You try not to try to learn from us. Try to be accurate you know. That's the goal is to be accurate. Fair it doesn't always work out that way.

"So it was a solid round. He got some more advice, Jack Nicklaus this week, Jack told them to enjoy himself smile, right? Yep. A little bit because he, he, he, he said, even walked into the clubhouse on Saturday. He was in a really good mood and someone's like man. What's wrong nothing? I'm in a great mood. They're like your face looks like you're mortified. A little duller some days. Emotion. He's really good at just focusing on what he has to do at compartmentalizing, what he has to do where, you know, if there's an issue with another player in his group if they're getting a ruling, he's just focused, what do I have to do on the next shot? What do I have to shot? So the pressure almost goes away. I mean, he could have an issue off the golf course. And once he gets on the golf course he isn't even it doesn't even come into his mind. Let's just he's so, so great at focusing gets really, really outstanding discipline and maybe quickly around the table on this fruit star service off here with regards to the United States in international play over the next couple of years. Canley seems is going to have a pretty big effect at it. He's just about a shoe in for the President's Cup team USA coming up this December, and then a very strong position to make the twenty twenty Ryder Cup team. Do you have any thoughts in general on that? Yeah. I think I think it's going to be great for, for us because all these younger guys on tour are not that far removed from, from college, where they've all had a decent exposure to matchplay, so shoot me, I think that, that puts him in good stead for the match play of the two different cups. However, the same. They're all coming over here and going to college, and then coming out and plan for the for the opposition team. So they have the same exposure, and maybe more because of their, the natural fact that more matchplay played overseas. So there's no real advantage, but it'd be nice to have him and young guys like him on a suit teams. Jimmy, what do you think about rookie status in events like the president's company? Ryder Cup is a big deal who's playing well. I think it's more of a big deal to us right now. I would say the Ryder Cup more than anything, but all of these guys have have experienced in playing in. In, in high level, intense invents albeit some of them have have experienced plane into Walker Cup. So if they have experienced plane into Walker Cup on the amateur side, they're going to understand what they're right? A cub vibe is like, maybe not the intensity, but the vibe and they've played in team competitions from not better ball or or matches like that in college. But they're used to that team atmosphere being in college. So I, I think less of an onus on it. I would say Michael real quickly, Jordan Spieth, in contention, again, pleading the third the last group on Sunday at, at Muirfield shot, Seventy-three didn't make a birdie in the back side of the golf course where a lot of guys were were were scoring pretty well. It keeps saying on TV this guy's turned. The corner is, is third top ten finished in the last three events has he turned a corner. I don't see that quarter being turned at least that all that aggressively. How many top tens? Even in so anyway. Excellent point. That's good. Matt there to Michael. No. I think he has. He's gained some confidence. Yeah. He's got to put, you know, ended up putting four straight rounds together and finish it off in the third or the fourth round and play a little bit better. It's the weekend seems to bite him. But, you know, honestly, I when you get in there when you haven't been around there and again, that Seventy-three he shot. Yeah. He wasn't around there. He wasn't holding some of the long putts that he was making earlier in the week. But yeah, he definitely has some confidence and some swagger back, whether that translates into wins. I don't know yet, but if you keep racking up top ten you're gonna you're gonna break in there. Yeah. That makes sense. Let's talk about the US open the one hundred nineteenth version of it, and Kenneth go around the table, little bit on this. The venue is Pebble Beach fruits, from a personal perspective. How do you like pebble is a venue for a major compared to other courses that are sort of, in the mix for, for US opens, and other majors? I really like it. It's one of the iconic courses in the United States. It's a regular tour stop. The players are very familiar with it, and from a personal standpoint, I like it because we will seen often at least once a year. That we know the holes so we can kind of follow it, it's kind of like Augusta. We know every shot that's coming up. And, and, you know, the whole so well and Pebble Beach, I think is, is kind of in that same category. So I, I really enjoy it because I know what's going to come up the holes. Very well. And I'm pleased to watch Jimmy, same question, just from a personal perspective. How do you like this as a as a major venue? I just wish it wasn't a US open because even the last time it was two thousand ten Tiger Woods. Senate the greens and the conditions were just awful. And that's just be everybody. So from that standpoint, I like Pebble Beach golf course. I think he'd be a golf course. I pick his one of my top five ten to ever play. But I just. I hate seeing what the US she does to golf courses in the US open and listening to all the great being granted. Professional players complain about everything. But from that standpoint I just I, I have a problem with the monkeys golf courses. So I would rather see it hosts like PGA or something like that, which won't happen. But it's just I don't know. It's I think two thousand ten gram two thousand tiger one by zillion. Two.

"He's one this master's at age forty three only Jack nNcholas has done a better, basically at age forty six. He's got four Matthews. Jack Nicklaus ass. Bob. And this is where it gets very very too. Because now it begs the question and prompts us. All okay. What do we think is going to happen? Do we believe this is it for Taga? Hell no eight. And I will tell you what. Because now he's got the monkey off his back. The proverbial monkey off his back. And now, we all know what he's playing. He's trying to seek approval. He doesn't feel a need to apologize to the rest of the world. Like he owed. Everybody else that apology for his transgression. He ordered to his wife to his kids to as a moment that raised him. He knows the damn thing. And I said this to go shame Orleans. Same on all is out there. Who's co yourself golf lovers? They got so preoccupied with all of this other stuff going on his like, did you forgot to judge them strictly as a golfer? Shame on us all ears. Especially those that you live in glass houses throwing stones. And you know, what I mean by that? But I doubt grass. None of your damn business. Only thing that concerns me because his golfing is he healthy enough to play. And when he played which has a game. Game off the team has a mid range game. That's what I'm paying attention to. Whether you draw eight on what the hell are you doing? Did it work for you?.

"Thanks for the compliment having right Thompson on but thank right Thompson. He was the one telling the great stories, and I came across some of his writings a few years ago, and he had been in Kansas City, and I think New Orleans and had a chance to spend some time corresponding with him. And I just he was just different. There's certain writers who come along. And it's not just sports writers. He's in that category of just these writers have come along. And whenever you see that they've written something you read it in right Thompson's one of those guys. He's just has his special innate ability to be able to sort of go to the depths that nobody else gets to and also to to look at somebody as you know in hole in full. It's not a puff piece. Like, he's really trying to figure you out and he's not trying to curry favor as he said, you know, tiger wood is not happy with me with how I profiled. Him. But he thinks that if tiger had already surpassed Jack Nicklaus in majors that tiger would not be playing golf anymore that he thinks that he would have probably tried to be an ABC because he was obsessed with being a navy seal jumping out of helicopters. You know, he wanted to be like his dad was, but it was something that he wanted to not that he was told he had to do or we expect you to do this in imagine. It's pretty heavy when your parents are separated they come together when you're playing golf. So the joy, you bring them is when you play golf, and that's the only joy that your bringing to them, or at least in your mind, I'm bringing my parents together, they don't get along. But when I play well, and I'm playing golf they come together. This stain sports history. All in couple of good ones, April. Second nineteen Eighty-four Hoya paranoia. Georgetown to beat Houston. Eighty four seventy five to win the NCAA title. John Thompson, the first African American coach to win a national title. I right eighty-five. The NCAA basketball rules committee adopted the forty five second shot clock to begin in the eighty six season. Can't believe I got that out without screwing it up. Okay. Let me see if there's anything else that a rod became the youngest player to hit three hundred home runs. He'd be Jimmy FOX's record by seventy nine days. Anything else on this date sports history?.
