"It's the bumper to bumper show rap. Chip Scoggins John Athletic, and Jack. Morris. We thank each and every one of them for their outstanding contributions to. Today's Monday. Broadcast we did a breakdown twins royals with Jack. A little bit about the burritos performance little bit about the hitting woes and a little bit about the Kansas City. Royals relief staff, which was Supreme Effective, and shutting down. Our alternately red hot bats even discussed what he thinks Miguel. Santiago for example needs to do to get back offensively I. Did confess to him that I learned this weekend because Jack was on the twins TV broadcast. On Fox sports north that it turns out he and I have something in common as it pertains to pitching corks. he noted that he was one of those pitchers who's who insisted that the catcher give him a stationary. Hard hardcore target glove open. He loved that target and it turns out. I felt exactly the same way merrillville literally. Yeah. would have been I. Guess it probably would have been sixth grade. I want to say I don't know what age I would have been. That in the championship game, I've told the story many times I came in saved the game. I happen to be the last great sports moment of my career. So take that for whatever. Don't even have that but what I remember about it was. When I pitched. I would get very annoyed if the catcher would not give me a target, I had to make that clear that day and I felt really vindicated about being such a jackass about insisting about the target. If it's if Jack Morris, it was good enough for him or important enough for him. Why wouldn't it be important enough for Little Danny Guerrero leading the big wheel restaurant little league team in Merrillville Indiana to the literally championship and I told you before I think if I'm being fair we won that title by Asterisk because the truth is the only reason we got to the championship game and I didn't mention this to Jack was that the team that beat us. Used a pitcher too many innings. And our our bosses are coach called him on it. He was on it. He was right. They were that made that pitcher eligible meant that victory didn't count we win the game by forfeit, but we took full advantage of it, and then we won the championship. Game. Your opportunity. It's The catcher not GonNa work pretty much hang with them out to the mound. That's my own way of the other thing I had to tell him is he loved zing the ball so hard back to me I'm going. Buddy come on man I'm I'm the pitcher don't want I don't want to end up with a bruised hand. It's not gonNA work, but he was pumped up. He's one of those guys who's trying to pump me up and at work he was very successful with it. Isn't it interesting? "I want to mention or get into a little bit about a a baseball brawl that took place. That, we alluded to with Jack Morris in the three o'clock hour, but before we do. We chatted with chip Scoggins at just before four o'clock. About a fairly eventful day at least in terms of speculation surrounding the big ten a lot of people thought the big ten would announced today they were postponing the two thousand twenty season or cancelling it an moving everything to the to the spring. And that has not yet happened officially, and there's even awesome disagreement on whether it will and who's meeting whom and that. Now, that might be put off a little bit. You got a little bit of an insurrection within conference involving a couple of schools including. Nebraska it appears. And we chatted with chip about the some of the parameters regarding. The real concern for most universities starting with the president's having more to do with liability issues and that in the end, they can't get past those as much as they want to play. A. For a number of reasons, not the least of which would be. financial. I'll just refer to him as an as an inside source because I don't know if he wanted. He put his name, but I don't know if he wanted it there shall I'll pass it along to you because I thought it was interesting fodder. he mentioned it He was listening to the Scott, interview? He writes this late last week. The instantly sent out a minimal standards protocol for return to sports all member schools. The previous guidance had always been guidance thus allowing the schools to develop their own protocols based on the resources and communities they were part of that. The incident lay has established a protocol. Each school must adhere to these something changed from the prior incident response as to waivers as stated that all members schools cannot have student athletes signed waivers there are no exceptions. As to students on campus student athletes, risk schools are determining less liability as they can create protocols that require social distancing masks and hygiene. The student of COVID can argue that the protocol may have been breached thus putting more liability on the student student athletes. They're frequent moments that you cannot ensure distancing masks and hygiene thus creating scenarios that they are asking student athletes to expose themselves. Making the school solely liable for any positive case I thought that was fairly well written. Yeah. It's good to stay as being made there and it. It makes perfect sense. Logically, right it really does that's the difference in the case of the athletes you're saying, we know we're forcing you to breach distancing protocols because otherwise we can't feel the team so therefore. We potentially are going to be more liable and with students we can at least pretend or at least try to say we have evidence that you you. We had the protocols in place and you voluntarily chose what forced to you voluntarily chosed chose to to breach protocol. So appreciate the email and if he wants his name out there, let me know. You can email me booth care fan dot com I wasn't quite sure. Fight there was a fight involving was is the Astros and somebody I remember who the other team was. And I tell you what you thought. This I thought it was kind of silly. So the reaction to it because the reaction was. Basically. In the covid nineteen winter of our discontent. Astros and the as brawl there's an ace you had better players together. You had one, I think the first base coach for the Astros got tackled. Bottom line is they were much closer than six fee, and in many cases, they are all over each other So we have this this immediate reaction because it's two thousand and twenty, and we got to react like. How does this have? Protocols in place. That's dangerous. Things can happen and it's like. Are we are we ever living in a real world that to suggest that there's never going to be a time. Even, with protocols in place when you decide to go ahead and play a game. That certain emotions as stupid as they may seem when it comes to baseball brawls are going to supersede whatever protocols you have in place, and so people are going to end up being on top of each other I. Just I guess I was. A bewildered and a bit amused by the outrage about it. Yeah. Technically speaking it's a complete breach. Yeah. But it's not play games. Emotion sometimes are to run high and guess what boys and girls people aren't GonNa quite adhere to all aspects of your protocol if they're annoyed enough and if that. Bugs you that much than shut the game just then you then you won't have any concern about it. So I guess, I was just shaking my head in wonderment that we can even find ourselves getting outraged about that. When they are still they're not robots K. They they they. They're flesh and blood all the old. Competitive Instincts even stupid ones that could come out at a time like that are gonNA come out at a time like that. There's not anything that I just don't think there's anything you can do to legislate against that scourge it. Yeah. But you can't legislate against and we've also seen other scenarios here. I think even including the Astros we talked about it at the time the dodgers in the Astros when the pitcher Kelly you know through the guy and it was you know messing around with the guy the. They kind of wanted to then but they didn't. They just got kind of close to each other and yelled stuff right? Didn't actually touch they didn't actually fight but. They did in that instance at least try to stop this one with the as and the the Astros. Allegedly Astros hitting coach said something about the as guys mother you're probably going to hold off in that regard you say something about somebody's mom that's probably going to ask you is probably going to set off a storm Laden. It's young athlete and he's probably GONNA go nuts not here to to celebrate it but I I would be surprised by it it. It's like we want it both ways you know he want the ball let's keep it going. Let's try to keep it say and and yet we want to pretend that suddenly. Players are going to be governed by completely different set of rules when it comes to in game stupidity where there's just you know somebody one person mad at. Another person. You mentioned that the the new T shirt. At one of our new lines is out as of yesterday was it this morning this morning and I don't even know what shirts are. In this particular line we're GONNA have we're going to announce several more lines in the ninety. Four weeks. Great Minnesota, get together and give him all sorts of you. Put it this way by the end of this stretch, you will never have more t shirt options than you do right now is that fair to say that it's very fair to say it's endless it just it's unbelievable emailer Mike writes calling someone a rube is another way of saying you sound like an idiot and you don't know what you're talking about. "And bring out the best in your teammates helps you individually because you're on a team that's going to be better right. So I think he's smart enough to know that. Obviously, he's done tremendous job of goodwill and his community DOT COM can't can't say enough about a wonderful. That is for guy that gives back. Yeah I think he's still having fun in baseball. I mean all that wonderful but you still want to be. Part of the equation, right you still want to contribute and right now Nelson Cruz Israeli doing all no question about that. Jack Morris is our guest on on the Fan By the way I think I know the answer this question, I'll ask it anyway at any point during your career was the game delayed by a drone. Coming over the field did drones even exist while you were still pitching? Know that there was a game delay because I go put on a new pair of pants. We've got jet buzzed this thinking light tower and Tiger Stadium. You're saying She didn't go change my pants. Out of me and I ducked. Question was A. Highlight. Moments in some of the things of this guy just acting like somebody just you know buzzed him but it was scary quite honestly the guy the guy buried that large out in. About two months later killed himself that right to may things. So what do we do the backdrop of the? So this is this is literally during a game where suddenly a lear jets, how low was it fly? He was literally over the top of the towers it was like won't because he was so low. And it was crazy. And he obviously had some issues daredevil issues if that's how it ended down down the road, that's that's scary. Is that the oddest? With that be in your career, the oddest interruption of a game or any others come to mind. Anti Disco Night Chicago. For Back They're supposed to pitch in game I asked her if I could get the windy city team won. Disco Demolition, night one night of infamy. Oh. My goodness we've talked to. Mike. Vaca about that. Over the years he spent some pretty good yarns on. Exactly. That I bring it up by the way for maybe listeners who had not been paying attention to twins game. The twins pirates game today was delayed briefly because a drone Dropped over the field and I guess they WANNA make sure it was clear because obviously to rules about any of those things, there's not supposed to be drawn in that location and so it interrupted play for not real long but it did it was for the players around the dugouts..

"Twins come from behind to win last night over the pirates five four, they are cruising at target field this afternoon up seven to one still batting in the fifth inning. Jack Morris is back with US and Jack I'm I'm sure you figured this out as a player. A long time ago but it occurs to me after having watched last night much of last night's game and a little bit of this one as well that if as baseball team, you just go out and play professionally as in make most of the players in the field put together a relatively disciplined at bats. You're you'RE GONNA win a lot of games on that basis alone because there are some bad teams out there in which that seems to be. An unreachable goal I mean the number of teams that make bad plays. If you just play reasonably, you can win a lot of games. Can you not? Funny. You should say that I couldn't agree more. It's like catch the ball, throw the ball, and that's some timely hitting. Don't give up any extra outs and you got a chance and you know the twins like I said last week and I said winter they've got a solid team and all aspects of the game the news not so good in Richhill. Injured List we know Oh does on his way back. Do we bother worrying about any of this stuff? None of these guys I think are supposed to be gone forever I get that but how do we parlay what they're doing on the field in terms the winds and there's can be no arguing with the start with the what's going on with the rotation itself. There's always some concerns when you know some of your guys are. Little banged up with injuries. So especially in the pitching department. you know the twins got a team that Catches. The ball wealth rose hits the ball extremely well, they can score around or very few guys that'll be shutting them out I don't believe. That you still want to have a guy on the mound embryos did a pretty good job again today I gathered in the box for I didn't get to see the game but then looking at the numbers. You know you want those guys to keep you in the ballgame. Keep US keep the your team within striking distance. Hopefully have some quick innings We've talked before about Nelson Cruz last night an interesting decision where basically you had a base open the decision was made were still gonNA throw to him. She was going to be up next and you got that problem with the bases loaded. Then you gotTa make sure you don't walk in.

"To score runs something they've got a they've got arguably one of the best offensive teams in all of baseball. You know Kepler got a great start to season and then the big day by cruise just a phenomenal day. That's an epic day for anybody's career and he doesn't you know several times a year it seems like Donaldson's plus already you know vice is hitting over four hundred. I mean they got a team that just got so many different weapons to beat you Starting pitching certainly benefits from earlier unsupported. So you know those guys can a little bit I. Think they've improved their bullpen. They can catch the ball. They've got a great defensive outfield They've got a great defensive field I think So you know there's just not many holes at this Minnesota twins. Team has had they improve the rotation enough. Always. The ultimate question isn't it. You know you you got to have cy young had. Tom seaver on the same team. But if they don't have good years, they still have guys didn't have good years. You know I just think you gotta give him the ball and let them play and see what happens. They've got talented kids for sure. Let's talk a little bit about Donaldson. Because I don't know if we talked post the the the acquisition, the signing I. I'm not sure We talked a few weeks ago, but we didn't get in any detail about that. You know for a lot of us the season was about our I can you find as hard as they are to find an anchor pitcher because you have a really good lineup already well, they couldn't do that. They've added pitching that they like a lot of people like my Ada obviously but they still made a significant financial commitment. To a big league hitter who knows how to hit a professional hitter, a former MVP. A lot of people think might add a little bit different sort of edge than they're accustomed to in the clubhouse, and that can be kind of a good part of the mix as well. What was your reaction when the word came down that the the the twins were adding Donaldson to the mix. Well. My initial reaction was winner winter winter. 'cause I covered Josh when he was with the Blue Jays in two thousand thirteen. And I know a little bit about his character. This guy's a Gamer and you're absolutely right he's a little different. He's got an edge I think that's a wonderful thing to add into this environment of abuse and experience because. You'll see every day comes to play the game of baseball. He plays the best he can so. In in a short season I, think that'll even be more amplified. He just to Kinda guy every team with me When it all said and done. Maybe. It don't need quite as greatest starting rotation. If you got guys that can catch the ball and hit the ball and score some runs is also one of the Best Defensive Third Baseman in the game today I mean I remember a couple of weeks go has done at target field watching the next edition game with a couple of other guys roy smalley was their grammar. was there we're all watching Danny glad career parameters. I think about twenty five minutes Donaldson took ground balls at third. He just gave us a show. It was an exhibition. Every kid. Every. Kid that plays baseball could watch that just to see how he went about his business going to his right go onto his left charging balls and just everyone was a perfect i. mean it was just fun to watch. It's fascinating to the the whole Donaldson story has been told a lot. As we've gotten to know him here as well. It's been retold here. The to me the fact that this is a guy who at one point in his career said he was close to quitting he could not hit I mean he was completely and utterly frustrated at one point early in his career that adds another layer to the story to me that he has turned himself into the kind of player he's become MVP caliber. You know. I can totally relate to that because you're talking to a guy that had the same experience when I was young, you know I couldn't throw strikes. I couldn't get guys out I was thinking over thinking. Career is over. I gotta go back to college and study this time around And all of a sudden nature caution the wins that get the demons out of your head in clear your mind so that you can cause i. knew I still had the ability and things turned around and then I get off my career but I can relate to that I mean I think a lot of young guys have to go through that real trying soul-searching point in their careers and bust through it before they start blocking speaks. To the mental part of the game I mean, it sounds like a cliche it sounds really trite but that's what you're talking about right well, and that's why it's hard for organizations to give up on talent. You know you sign a kid out of college or out of high school and how long does it take him to before he's ready to produce it the big lake level you know it's frustrating at times we all expect as fans. these guys that just you know put on the uniform and go out there and and impress us. But some guys you know the timetable is different for everybody and we have to be patient. burritos obviously did not have a very good opening start mistake to the early lead couldn't hold it and It's one start we know how this thing goes but you you've watched him a lot over the years and so I'm curious to get your view on sort of where he is and when you see him going well, when you see him dominating what you think the key is to that and when he struggles as did in the openness has late in several seasons, what doesn't seem to be what you observe is what seems to be missing in those starts Looking in his eye he's an emotional guy right. He might not say he is, but he is because he shows his emotions by the way he pitches when he's when he's doing. Well, he's got the ball. He's editor way hoping they in the batteries box quickly 'cause he's ready to go and. Part of me is him to calm down and slow down You know I'm not a big fan of having them go over his head with wind up, but that's that's neither here nor there You know it's comfortable for him and he has control of his body, and then it works and I don't I'm not gonNA tell them not to do that right if I was coach but I just wish she could find way to breathe because sometimes I think they get going so fast and you know he's got really good stuff but by going so fast that poke is sometimes gets A little blurred, and then all of a sudden, the ball is not down zone where he wanted to throw it left out over the middle or up his own, and that's when things we get a Giggle Rack Jack Morris is our guest I've got an era question for you. We may have talked about this before over the years it came up. A few days going. We're talking about the number of games early here where you know the the twin starter walks on the mounties up five all or four or whatever had good sign not just small lead sizable leads early in the game. And it was my belief that That's why sometimes in evaluating players E. R., A. Might End up being a bit overrated to the extent that. Listening to a lot of really good pictures over the years they tell me if they've got that kind of lead early. They are going to pick differently. They're not gonNA walk anybody go on to make everybody earn it, and if they give up a home run here or you know a couple of Solo home runs here there no big deal it allows them to kind of pitch differently and your career I think you've talked about that before if I'm not mistaken.

We have I guess you could say the. Advantage so to speak of. Getting right away, the opportunity to to to to plug in. Let's say richhill. Not a guy that I was celebrating when we got him, I forgot about him. He's got savvy. Yeah, hit the issue is he's fifty and whether he's going to be healthy enough, but in the feeling when the twins signing though was that he wouldn't be ready until guess what July. Well, it's or July and in in late July so to that extent. He might well be. You could argue give us great depth in the rotation. What right from the? Beginning now. As I understand it. We can talk Jack Morris about this. Your remember Michael Pineda. Yes. We signed him to a two year twenty million dollar contract. I like him as a pitcher. We talked about that I think. That's been a good investment. I, still think there's reasonably he's got something left. Member! He got caught cheating correct yes. So! He's and as I understand in terms of the suspensions, even though the seasons out one hundred and sixty two games He's still ineligible for the first thirty nine of our sixty games. saw. That's not very helpful I. Guess You could say on the front end, but he would be available to us the rest of the season, and in the postseason, just in time for us to get swept by the Yankees. But he would be there. Force yes, and circle back where you started. He can be the one that we talked about as our August thirty one acquisition two very good point. It's like having a guy. It's like trading for a guy, but we didn't have to trade for him. We're GONNA. Get to use that talking point theoretic lob so I don't know like I, said it's it. Maybe we. Maybe hill is able to be. Helpful from the beginning now you look at this and this one thinks about Jack. Does rotation depth, mean more or less in a sixty game season. I think a lot of people think it means less. And yet. Given this, the the the concentration games and I think the likelihood I mean everything's gotta be compressed. Get Sixty in the schedule and IT GONNA be some rain outs. There's GonNa be some suspended games, which might mean eventually more doubleheaders, so maybe you? You know terms of depth. You need it now more than ever. Even though you think of death as being more important over the course of the marathon of a major league baseball season as well, your Guy Buxton. There was that open question. Would he be ready for the start of the season will now there's no doubt should be. He's ready for the start of the season. Right so you've got that going for Ya. That's another advantage. You could say to this thing extending out as far. As indeed it. It did so. We'll see I. Mean there's. All the reason in the world..

So I'll said, so the guest we're efforting is right Thompson, who has a phenomenal piece in ESPN the magazine this week about Dale Murphy and how there's this whole generation, particularly in the southeast who believes domer- for should be in the hall of fame. The baseball hall of fame induction ceremony is Sunday. It'll be Jack Morris, Alan Trammell Vladimir Guerrero who mentioned earlier who would be wiffle ball player. Jim Thome who'd had a can o Jim Thome e who should be on everyone's all time. Looks like you should be on your softball league team Griffin, rip Chipper Jones. And Trevor Hoffman. And we're in the funny Marty when you get to certain age, it's like the guys you watch their entire career another. Yeah, it makes me feel really old. Like what those guys are going in. The hall of fame, right? Trevor Hoffman was the I was he liked the first real closer. I guess maybe Dennis Eckersley might have been the first real closer, but Hoffman was at the guy that I remember that came in and just therm nothing but smoke. Yeah, and but then like got crafty and he's of the group. He's probably the most is numbers are crazy, but of the group. He's the one that people seem to have the most reservations about, but he was there man like there was who else were the lease? Myth lease myth hall of fame, John rocker, John rocker. John rocker lasted a second, wasn't he closer though? He was starter was who's closer goose Gossage hit Googlers. Goose was the first goose was the first one of my life that was just was like just came. Just came in throwing smoke and. Yeah, but those closers were the best, but then but then you had the guys that were like great and then weren't so great. Like Bruce, Bruce suitor closer, Billy Wagner. Billy Wagner was the man son? Yeah, Billy Wagner grew up near me. He's from tazewell Virginia. Went to Fareham college. The little teeny, tiny Fareham college, of course, Moran Rivera, but goose was the one hour reduces the one that came along and I thought and then other ones, though there's some other ones that are scaping me right now that. When unique personalities when we look like maybe not kids. But as we were getting on towards high school college, they were some guys, I'll think of it as we go. I'm still working on joslin. Trying to think. Francisco rodriguez. I mean lease myth, I love Lee Smith lease. Myth is a really good call man. He's tall. Yeah, right. Eckersley was the guy probably though. Yeah, see. I'm so old armor when he was was a decent starter, but. Why didn't he? Yeah, you break. I want to Braise about small malts basically two different careers, which is wise in the hall of fame so. So bring up del Murphy because of the peace right Thompson road and full disclosure, I'm sitting in my office right now with a framed portrait of del Murphy, like standing in front of the American flag, holding his golden glove. And so, yeah, if you grew up in the part of the world we did and this is the super station era. And I, I knew so much about the cubs and the Braves, both because you watch them on television every day. You watch cubs in the morning. Watch brazen night. I went to a cubs cubs Braves game one time with the church youth groups that with girl, and I thought she would be impressed at my overwhelming knowledge of both teams and all scare. I mean, because if you watch both of those teams every single day all summer long, you know, every summer of youth it became will you know when Rafael Ramirez the plate and I'm going well, you know, he really struggles on so. "That maybe it's important maybe because this game is here and not in in houston the dodgers have a real advantage the dodgers of course fifty seven in twenty four at home this year and it's really interesting dynamic here these this these crowds have been so great in this postseason that maybe there is a little boosts here when historically baseball doesn't provide a homefield advantage that may be baseball basketball and football provides tim we've been i counting down the top seven world series game sevens throughout our pregame show what stands out in your life for me it's 1991 jack morris pitched at tanning once nothing shut out in game 7 and that simply could not happen today i wrote that story for sports illustrated at that time kelly gave to say jack morris out of that game and jack morris that have not coming out of the game and ready bush told me after the game he said if tom kelly had taken forest out he said it would be the first time a baseball at a man who was killed other vowed jack wars would kill before he led him take him out of the game that's how great pitchers reacted fact death blood him i'm shocked you pick the right gained seven without one okay uh i also think we have to take back the last year cubs indians that was an unbelievable game rodger davis is home run one of the most incredible moments we've ever seen the cubs rebounding two thousand one mariano rivera losing in the loop hit by louis gonzalez what about nike 60 right bill mazeroski ending that incredible world series between the pirates in the.
