"Imaging wear woke up with a start at about five. Am on February twenty. Fifth Nineteen Seventy eight. She didn't know why but she just had a bad feeling when she'd gone to bed the night before her son. Ted Wasn't yet home for the night he'd gone to a basketball game in Chico. California with a few friends. It was about an hour away from their home in. Yuba city but she expected him back from the fifty mile. Drive around eleven. I mean maybe midnight at the latest if they decided to stop for a bite to eat or whatever on their way home she knows the only way to calm her nerves is to make sure that Ted is home and in bed where he should be but when she gets to his room she sees that the bed is empty in a low key panic at this point she decided to call Juanita Sterling whose son Bill had gone to the same game with Ted. The night before need tells imaging that her son didn't come home either and that she's actually been up since two worried sick she's already called. Jackman. Drew his mother Melba. Who said the same thing? No sign of her son Jack. Either imaging hangs up and calls Jackie. Hewitt's mother and Jackie's mom says the same thing no Jackie Imaging Center daughter-in-law down the street to talk to the stepfather of the last boy. Gary Matthias by the time the Sun was coming up. It was clear that all five boys were missing. Imaging tries to relax but relaxing is impossible. She knows in her gut. Something is very wrong and she knows that for two reasons burst her son. Ted was scheduled to play in a basketball tournament later that day. Saturday the twenty fifth and to say that he was pumped. It'd be a huge understatement. He laid out his clothes washed shoes and even talking nonstop about this big game winning. It would get his team a week long trip to Los Angeles. He would not miss that game or anything and imaging nuit now. The second reason she knew something was wrong is because Ted's life was very scheduled and very predictable. She knew that he would not had not would never just randomly stay out all night. Ted Always came home and Jackie Jack. Bill and Gary were no different now. I need to stop here and tell you one important thing about these five boys. They're often referred to as both ways but I mean they're not really boys yes like. How old are they? Well for starters. The youngest was twenty four and the oldest was thirty two but their parents and families and the people in their community always referred to them as boys because all five men had intellectual disabilities of some kind. They were all enrolled in this day program for adults their basketball team gateway gators is actually part of that program and all five of them lived at home with their families now physically. They were all healthy very capable and while none of them lived independently most of them function at a relatively high level imaging son. Ted was thirty two and the oldest of the group. He worked for a while as a janitor and as a clerk at a snack bar but at the time of our story he didn't currently have a job. Ted had a heart of gold and he loved to make new friends. He's kind of describe law as childlike. For example Cynthia Gorny wrote a piece for the Washington Post back in nineteen seventy eight and she says that Ted would wave to strangers and he was literally be heartbroken for hours. If they didn't back now. Ted was closest to the youngest of the group twenty four year. Old Jackie Jackie was the most severely disabled of the five. He spent most of his childhood actually in the Napa State Hospital which back then was called the Napa insane asylum. He couldn't read or write or even dial a telephone and he relied a lot on his mother and also his bff Ted now. Jackie was really shy and didn't like being away from home for very long. Definitely not overnight which is why his parents were so worried about him. The Third Man Jack Madrid Aug was thirty and while he to lived at home he was pretty independent. He graduated high school and it spent two years in the army but was said to have had a low. I Q he was one of the only ones in the group that had a driver's license and he had this like nineteen sixty seven turquoise and white mercury. Montego that he was like so proud. I mean God I love his pride and joy and it's actually the car that took the boys to the game and Chico that night now. Jack's closest friend in the group was twenty nine year old bill stirling who left his house that night with fifteen dollars and four different maps of the California area now. Bill had worked for awhile dishwasher but his mother insisted he quit when she found out people were getting him drunk stealing his money at work. They were really taking advantage of him now. Finally the final guy we have in this group is Gary Matthias. He was twenty five years old and a bit of an outlier in this group of guys because he worked for his father's gardening business and before that he'd been in the army like Jack but he was medically discharged due to a psychiatric issue. Unlike the other guys he didn't actually have an intellectual disability at all. He was actually diagnosed with schizophrenia. Had been stable for the last two years. No one is really sure how or why Gary got involved with the gateway projects but he loved it especially their basketball team the gators and he really enjoyed hanging out with the rest of the guys so anyways these are the boys that were talking about these young men. Ted Jackie Jack Bill and Gary and they're all missing. Saturday comes and goes with no word from the boys so finally at eight that evening their parents decide to call the police right away. The sheriff's department puts out an alert asking for the public's help locating these five guys. Big Give a description of Jack's Mercury Montego along with the license plate number but they don't launch into their search right away according to a Sacramento Bee article from nineteen. Seventy eight at this point. They're kind of just watching. I mean remember. These are grown men and while there folks say that it's out of character for them not to come home like the police are a little bit skeptical right but they're alert is an out long when information starts rolling in. They're able to confirm that the guys went to the game in Chico and as a bonus their team actually won. The last known sighting was at a convenience store and she go after the game. This is like just before ten o'clock that night according to the clerk and the clerk says it was memorable because ten. Pm was closing time and the Cork was a little bit annoyed. That these five guys were pulling in right at the end of the night. You know. You're getting ready. Your closing up and the clerk says they buy a bunch of like junky snacks. Candy bars chips that kind of thing and then they left. That's it police. Get another call from a woman who says she saw the guys on Saturday or Sunday. But here's the thing that's interesting. She says that when she saw them they were in a red pickup truck. She said two of them came in to buy food at her store while one went to a phone booth to make a call and the other two state in the truck. But here's the thing I mean beyond this mystery red truck that they're seen in the store that she runs his way up north and like way off the course the boys would have taken to get home from that basketball game so initially police kind or rule out this citing thinking that it's probably not there guys but just then they get a call from dining joe and joe says hey. I think I saw those guys that you're looking for on Friday night. I was driving up this gravel road toward my cabin in the mountains and my car got stuck in the snow and I get out and I'm trying to push it free and in all of this I start having a heart attack. Joe Goes on to tell police that he gets back inside his car with the engine running and the heat on and after a few hours like this sometime between like eleven. Pm and midnight. He says that he starts to hear a whistling sound. So Joe gets out of his car. He looks down the road back behind him down the mountain and about one hundred and fifty feet away. He sees headlights. And what looks like a group of men along with a woman holding a baby? He says they're all outside the car and he can see them in. The glow of Car's headlights.

"Attack that sucks. Yeah so he recovered. He's fine eventually his car Atta gas so he slept the night in the car survived. Got Out the next morning and went to walk back eight miles down the hill to the lodge you staying at and a hundred and fifty feet away. He found their car in the middle of the road. Empty gone creepy so he was a hundred and fifty feet away from these mass so he was actually close so he could have seen that. It's not out of the question but we just don't know we just don't know okay so nothing came from this guy's tip that couldn't they. They investigated him but didn't find any foul play. It just heartbreaking. That he was a hundred and fifty feet away. Could he have been any help? He was in the middle of a heart attack. Maybe not but if they would have all stayed together till the next morning yes so more than three months went by and no sign of the men. It's as if they walked into a snowy night and vanished into thin air on June fourth of the same year after the snow melted a group of bikers. Were taken a ride in the plumas national forest when they came upon an abandoned for a service outpost as they pulled up. They noticed that a window had been broken out and they were suddenly overtaken by the strong smell of death and the call. The police tree crews spent half a day clearing trees from the road just to get to the abandoned trailer. Once they entered they found empty cans of food. Wood furniture extra clothing. Books and Ted Weirs Body. Candles had been recently lit and thirty one cans of food were found open and Eaton. They actually were opened with an army. P thirty eight can opener which needs a certain expertise to use expertise only Gary Matthias and Jack macdougall. Who were both in the army would have had? Ted's leather shoes were missing and Gerry's tennis shoes were found inside the trailer Mrs heartbreaking. It is because Jerry's tennis shoes were found inside the trailer that led investigators to believe that Gary was inside the trailer long enough to switch shoes. So Ted was the only one found at this point. He was the only one in the trailer and he was found laying on a bed covered under eight sheets with his arms on his chest. Eight sheets he had. He was covered with eight sheets covered up with eight sheets. He had his pants pulled up to his knees. His ring inscribed with Ted was on the nightstand also along with his wallet and also a gold. Watch that none of the parents recognized now. They did a analysis of Ted's beard hair and they found that the growth he had been there for at least six weeks in that trailer like his. He had been alive at least for six weeks after they went missing. Because that's how long has beard had grown? They also noticed that he had lost a considerable amount of weight. He was at least two hundred pounds when he went missing he had lost eighty two hundred pounds. Oh my God And he had. They found that he had died. From basically exposure he had blood poisoning from Frostbite which led to gangrene which lead to lead poisoning and he lost five toes at that point when God yeah terrible. Terrible terrible way to die. So let's talk about this trailer and this forced outpost for a little bit okay because I do think it's important now at this outpost. They found that Ted had died from exposure and he had covered up with eight sheets but there was plenty of material to burn in that trailer to start a fire and they. They found no evidence at any point. Had He tried to start a fire for warmth. Also there was never a fire set at all in in the trailer. For there was books there was paper. There was clothing there was would there was stuff was there. Fire starter material. Was there a lighter or matches? I believe so. It didn't say specifically but it was a fully stocked trailer. Also there was a propane tank that could have been hooked up to a heater to the trailer. That was never hooked up. Now you have to consider who these men were. Who had was it. It said that Ted didn't have common sense and also setting up a propane tank and doing all of that was probably just out of his scope. Yeah Frantic he was clarified. He was sick. He probably wouldn't even considered setting up a propane tank. I can't really blame them for that. I would. I consider setting up a private. We wouldn't either. I'm not sure I probably wouldn't either. I'd probably just try to start a fire. Yeah so now also. There was two containers at this outpost. One of the containers had been broken into which contain the canned food that they found in the trailer He had gone through the canned food. The sadly the container next to it wasn't opened it wasn't broken into it contained enough food to sustain all five men for at least a year. That's awful so there's a lot of speculation about you know whether they had the common sense or awareness to hook up the propane tank About the food. They're family sad that they were the type of men who wouldn't willingly touch something that didn't belong to them so there is a kind of a speculation saying that. Okay maybe they just felt that they were breaking and entering and it was you know it was really black and white like those were against the rules. Breaking into someone's belong as against the rules. We're not GONNA do that. Maybe they were delirious and just missed it maybe. They thought that they checked everywhere and MR SPA and didn't see the food. Maybe they didn't realize what the food was because by then they were so exhausted and hungry and cold and sick that they didn't realize what they were looking at. Yeah I tend to think that maybe they just you know tough. Conditions it snowy. You're starving you hire scared you're you have frostbite. Yeah you know it's would. I have the awareness to break into everything. I'm not sure I don't know I don't know either. It's easy to say like white and they do this or I would have done that. But until you're in that situation and you're suffering in these ways and you're going through these extreme circumstances you really don't know absolutely. I think you know even being on the I'm not in the position to diagnose anyone by any means I just have a hunch because I have a brother WHO's autistic. He's on the spectrum. He's very high functioning and his just seeming like a lot of these men might have been on the spectrum and just had not been diagnosed yet. Or you know maybe thirty years later. They would bank diagnosed or today say they would've been diagnosed on the spectrum. But you know I'm thinking at some point I think with survival kick in like the will to live with it kick in. I don't know I quit for me. I don't even know so. I think putting their diagnosis or their mental disabilities aside. I don't think anybody would know what to do in that situation until they're in that situation exactly and maybe you hire a great point. Maybe there was no access to a fire starter. Yeah they didn't. Hook up the propane so they didn't have. I don't even know if I would honestly trust myself to hook up or painting to a trailer. I can barely trust myself to hook up a propane tank to a fucking Barbara. Yeah I know and half the time like I gonNA blow up right now. I mean blow knew about. I know it sounds ridiculous but in if you're already terrified you don't WanNa add any sort of unknown element to your situation. Exactly like people will always choose the double that they know exactly exactly and I'm thinking might have literally half of my toes or frozen off. Am I going to outside again? Yeah fuck no no so jack. Muga and Bill Stirling were found two days later eight miles closer to the car my God. Oh so and by the way this trailer camp. This Forest Service camp was nearly twenty miles from their car. It was nineteen point six miles from their car so they had walked. At least Ted had walked nineteen point six miles from their car to this outpost which had to take days. Yeah there's no there's no way that was a straight line either no Jack Maduga and bill stirling found two days later eight miles closer to the car. On opposite sides of the road nothing but scattered bones were left of bill and Jack Madrid goes body was dragged to a nearby stream by animals. His car keys were still in his pants. Pocket it was determined hypothermia slash exposure was caused was the cause of death for Jack. Maju got bill sterling's death couldn't be determined because of the state up his remains. So what I WANNA know is did they all make it to the trailer and then Jack and bill decided to walk back to the car because Jack was the only one who could drive out of well one of the only ones who could drive out of the groups. Oh did they all make it to the trailer in Ted said? I'm good here. You go back to the car and then they just never made it back to the car or did they stop on the way to the trailer and we'll never know there was no other evidence in except for the one shoes. Yeah so Jack Hewitt. Other boy that they The other man. Excuse me that they hadn't found yet. They were still. The search party was still on because at this point. They're looking for Jack Hewitt and Gary Mathias Jack. Hewitt's father was warned not to help investigators on the rescue mission but on June eighth. He saw what he thought. Appear to be Jack's jacket near the trailer. When he went to pick up the jacket Jack Spine fell out. Oh my God Jack was awful. It terrible terrible Jack Hewitt was later identified by his skull and teeth found about fifty feet near his jacket in spine so by June eighth. Four of the five men had been found. I just can't imagine what these families and these parents were going through. This is the worst case scenario. It is a worst case as a parent. I just I empathize with them so deeply. This is just tragic. It is horrible it is horrible. Gary Matthias is still missing to this day. They never found his body. They never found him alive. They never found his remains nothing. It isn't known why they drove there where they were going or what they were doing to this day. So obviously we have one man. S not found. And that is Gary. And we'RE GONNA look into Gary a little bit because some of the theories of why this happened have to deal with Gerry. Matthias and these are just theories are just theories. These are just theories now the Article a lot about Gary was in the article which I'm assuming got from the evidence and it suggests my assumption only because the article was I. I'd say the prevailing theory was that Gary Matthias had something to do with this because he was a little bit different than the other men. So the four men. Bill Jack Hewitt Jack.

"So he jack could manage his own finances. He was actually a truck driver in the army from sixty six sixty eight and he was one of two of the men who had a driver's license and Jack Actually owned a car. Wow Yeah and that brings us to the fifth and final member is Gary Matthias. He was twenty five and he was a singer in a local band. He played football at Marysville high school in the sixties and he also served in the army He had his driver's license and he worked as an assistant. Gardener his step-dad landscaping business. So we have Ted Jack Hewitt Bill Stirling Jack macdougall and Gary Matthias. Those are the five men who disappeared okay. The boys loved basketball. They played in the Special Olympics and also followed college basketball and impressive. Yeah they met through the Program they were in and that's how they got into playing basketball for their Special Olympics. Actually wow so the night of the disappearance. They went to Chico to watch their favorite basketball team. The UC Davis Basketball Team Verses Chico Basketball Team. The men's parents had tried to discourage them from going to the game and Chico because they had an early basketball game in Rocklin the next morning which they weren't GonNa Miss It was through the program. It was part of the Special Olympics and I even think that there was supposed to be a celebrity guest there. Oh so is a big deal. It was a big deal and they would not have missed it but the men were determined to go see their favorite team. Play stay went and they saw the game. Uc Davis one thirteen one and after watching. Uc Davis beat. She goes state and just before ten PM. They stopped at popular convenience store in Chico and loaded up on snacks for the ride home. This was the last time that anyone would see them alive by the early morning hours of Saturday February twenty fifth the morning after they left for Chico. All the boys parents were extremely worried. They started to call one another and ask if the boys were at each other's homes and when they all realize that the boys weren't there they contacted the police and the search got underway now. Police campus the route from Marysville Chico. And Go back to Marysville and this route was only what would you say forty miles an hour drive host yet and it's a straight shot north. Yes on than easy. Drive up ninety nine yes right or seventy either way seventy to ninety nine if you're from. Marysville okay so they took seventy to ninety nine for Marysville to Chico and it's a straight shot simple highway yes. Police put out broadcast throughout northern California with men's pictures and the circumstances of which they disappeared. The search effort produced no leads then on February Twenty Eighth Jack Madrid Gez nineteen sixty seven. Mercury Montego was found by the US Forest Service worker. It was parked at the snow line. Forty miles east of Chico in the foothills of Orville in the Plumas National Forest. The car was empty except for snack wrappers and a quarter tank of gas. Investigators didn't find the keys but when they hot wired it started right up which means with the keys. It would have started right up. Yes it didn't appear to be stuck Because it was in the snow but it didn't appear to be unmovable and even if it was slightly stuck there were five strong strong men that could have dug it out. I'm sure helped. Get it out. Yes one thing to know the car. Jacks Pride and joy was fairly undamaged which was interesting to investigators because it was a heavy car and it was loaded with five guys in fine five grown men inside the car which weighed it down. Even more on the road was mostly traveled by logging trucks which led investigators to wonder if whoever was driving new the road. Well enough not to damage the car on a dark. Bumpy Road not particularly built for low cars. Which seems like I mean. Have you ever? I'm sure you've driven on a logging truck before it beat the hell out of your car if it's not a high profile car you mean on a logging road a day logging trucks but I liked it. I always ride logging trucks for one and for two I have driven on a road that was frequented by Logging trucks and it was terrifying on my way to truckee The road was so whiny and it was snowy and these huge logging trucks were riding beside me hogging up this tiny winding road and I hate it. Yeah they're full usually dirt heavily rutted. There's usually stones and rock. There's washouts yeah. It's wherever they're bringing the trees back from. It's not a it's not pay. It's not easy access. Yeah the weird thing about this is Jack. Never let anyone drive his car. But Jack's parents also said that he didn't have any particular draw to this road or this area. He didn't know anyone in the area and he wasn't familiar with it. They basically drove forty miles in the wrong direction. Right in a way that had to be intentional. There's no way that you could do this on accident. You couldn't make five wrong. Turns IN UP HERE. It's like it's very strange. So and they also had maps right. It's weird and it's only gonNA get weirder claim. Investigators immediately started looking for the five sifting through snowbanks dogs. Horses helicopters all turned up. Nothing more than six thousand combined hours spent searching so. I looked this up because I was interested and I was like okay. You have these scent dogs. Obviously they're like noses are a million times better than humans But does know exactly. That was my question so snow. If it was a newly fallen snow it could have dampered the scent of the men which it was snowy that makes sense. Because I know that you can't track in water either YEP so you Sometimes and also in warm environments it's easier for the scent to linger. It's like a stronger. Makes it? Louder quote unveiled louder. If you will the sent to the dogs But in colder and vitamer environments it can be tougher to track ascent specially newly fallen snow. Oh Man so. It was like the worst case scenario to go missing right right now. I know where this is. I've been to this area before I used to go Nearly every year and cut down a Christmas tree up on these logging off these logging roads. it's pretty far out there and he deleted yet totally isolated and in the opposite direction. They were going and it's not like we said before a really road that you would take by accident. You're also familiar with this area right a little bit. Yahoo used to go bucks lake yes. I'm semi kinda familiar with books like I mean. It is kind of weird that I would say. Three out of the five men didn't prefer camping or the Wilderness and they end up on this snowy logging road on your way to Bucks Lake. Yeah right yeah. The only reason to really take that road is to go to books like but the people in this situation didn't have any reason to want to go to Bucks Leo. There were actually like anti nature. Yeah so it seems. It's it's like why. Why did they just want to find the guy at the convenience store or somebody that they sat next to it? The basketball game. Well the guy at the convenience store clearly remembers them because they were kind of rowdy they had just come off away picture them very like tall too because they're basketball players and just happy and having a great time. Yeah they were. He said that they were rambunctious. He actually think remembered being annoyed because they were so excited. They had come in. You know this group of big old guys. Their favorite team just one. They're heading back down in Marysville and they're gonNA get up in the morning and they're stoke yeah and he just like get your sacks and go on and get but he's specifically for them and he didn't overhear them. He couldn't give any more clues other than they were. They're getting snacks. Gosh it's so frustrating. I know at this. So at this point investigators were desperate to find the men. They even consulted a psychic. The Psychic said she saw bodies in green canvas bags and next they consulted a doubter or a water witch but A body witcher so someone hit. Yeah so someone who finds water with a Magical Ron. They also can use that to find bodies or gravesites. Okay Future episode idea. Yeah we've done psychic solving crimes. We have not done water. Witcher's or body Witter's Oh my gosh. This is fascinating either. They're known as dowager. Oh like the dowsing Rod. Yeah okay well. Wow so they brought in this man who Had A magical rod and His Majesty. I can't say magical rod without thinking were twelve years old. Yeah seriously sorry for the penis jokes. It's happy hour penis. Jokes are gonNA lock can happen. Yes so his magical. Rod pointed to an empty cabin with. No I'm trying to get through this sentence and be serious one more time for good measure his magical. Rod pointed to an empty cabin but it led to no clues strangely. A tip came in from a man who said he was scouting campsite the night. The boys drove up so he was staying in a lodge that was oh about eight miles down the hill from where the car was found and he drove up from that lodge the same night. The boys were there. He said he was scouting campsite for his wife and his daughter for the next weekend at night. Which is the best time to find a campground? Right if you're midnight that's doesn't make any sense but okay right well. I mean. It didn't didn't specify what time he originally started. But by the time it got dark he was stuck in the snow and he went to get out of his car to push it and how to fuck and heart attack. This guy is the unluckiest man alive seriously so he had a heart attack and then he couldn't push his car out of the snow because clearly are yeah so we got back in his car and he left it running with the heater on trying to wait out his heart attack and not die so he said that while he was in his car he saw six or seven shadowy shadowy figures are outside of his car and he said that he called out for help twice but when he did that he said the figures went still and turned off their lights. So I don't know if it was headlight or flashlights. I don't think the men had flashlights with them. So maybe it was headlights but also he admitted to having hallucinations from the heart attack. Like a symptom from a heart attack could be hallucinations. I was going to ask that if you have a heart attack. Are you really the best I witnessed? Probably not no. I don't think so he he. I think it can induce some kind of hallucinations because he also said that he saw five men figures with a woman and a baby that night on that road weird yes but nothing ever came from his tip and they actually doctors police had doctors do an Ekg to To prove if he did have a heart attack and in fact he did have a heart..

"That new bell to bell for the for Studio Yellow Smiley face. Mind says ring for beer or something like that. Yeah something like that. Mine's better we can pretend. Pretend time. Put your sunglasses back on all right nation. We are back and we're back into the story before the break we told you that the They left the store. They went missing the next not make sense. I didn't even say they were missing but they did go missing because the next day they weren't home in the families were worried. They were upset as tends to happen. This is the day of the tournament. It's a big day. They were excited about it One of them had even told their mother to wake them up really early here so excited about tournament and and they weren't home. Yeah and the families contacted authorities and the county sheriff's department began searching for the men. This has gotta be a horrible feeling and John. I don't have children but you do. Can you imagine what that is like and the other thing I wanted to piggyback on this is there is no twenty four or forty eight hour nonsense that's TVBS. You can call right away. Let go well. They needed been missing for forty eight hours. Or you're not gonNA care now. They're they're gonNA look into this absolutely absolutely. I think if your son was missing I can't even imagine what that would be like well. And you're right. And they didn't actually wait till the next morning when they all finally start communicating with each other. Some of them had been phoning each other at two. Am because they were that concerned me think about las. You've got a you've got a special needs child that lives with you. Who went on a fifty mile trip which is much longer than they normally would go on and they haven't come home by the time they're expected you're gonNA be freaking out. Yeah and so. They start worrying and the police get on. An evidence starts to come in pretty quickly. Wesley. The following Tuesday's so this would have been the twenty eighth. They'll probably worth saying that would not have felt quickly to the no not at all but they do find Jack. Madrid car One of the forest rangers finds it and it's abandoned it sitting in this unpaved road in Oroville in the Rogers cow camp area and the car. Which if you look it up. There's a Lotta pictures of it. It's as Turquoise and white like we said it's sixty nine Mercury Montego. It was on this snowy road literally in the middle of a forest that none of these men had ever at least been known to visit. Let's put it that way. And and there's a kicker here it was seventy miles away from Chico where they had been and in the opposite direction. They weren't headed towards home. They ride the other day and they investigate and find zero evidence at the place. That foul play occurred at the car. But it's unlocked one of the windows down and the keys are missing. But here's the other thing. There's a couple of other things that make this. Weird maps are still in the glove compartment. So they didn't take those. That is a thing of the past anymore. Strew people probably don't have maps in their car. Look at him coming in. Although I do have maps in my bug out bag I got maps in my bag. Have Him in my truck but you know I think I've just from every vehicle Geneva's mood with them. It's the math is still shows. Here's the unincorporated territories. This is the weird part. East and West Germany Wide Sherman Map in Germany. There's no obvious damage to the car even though this is on a really really rough road in this now though snack wrappers were in there along with half eaten marathon bar. I know why it was only half eaten like all the other food had been consumed the marathon bar only half and now we know why the car is not stuck in this like hot wire it or whatever and they could drive right out of there. It still had a quarter tank of gas. They didn't run. Outta of gas. So this leads police down a line of thinking that the driver had either used astonishing care driving on this road to make sure that nothing happened like precision driving or he or she knew the road well enough to anticipate were all their rights and holes and everything were. That's a really really important piece of the puzzle as in. Maybe the boys weren't driving because it doesn't make sense if they were. That's just the theory. But that is one that kind of sticks out and the investigators really kind of stuck with as well and and the other. The other side of that theory Madrid was known to be extra careful with his car so they.

"Pencils for no particular reason Cologne. He would question simple instructions stopping at a stop sign or actually one time. When his parents the house caught fire he they were in the house and he was laying his dad and his brother whose name is Dallas said? Hey we gotta get out. He said leave me alone. I have to the rest for work tomorrow and just like lay. They're watching the flames on the ceiling. So He's ended up having to like drag him out my goodness so he would also wake in the middle of the night and ask. How can mickey mouse can hit a ball farther than me? I mean I wonder that too. It was Gary Matthias who was twenty five. He was a little different from the other guys. I I don't know if he was mentally handicapped or not. I guess you've had you been to be in this program. But he was a singer in a local band he played football at Maryville high school. He was just a little bit different from that like he was part of the group but the four in the previous four were really close in Gary within their huge is a little bit different. I mean it's hard to know. Like what was really the situations with these guys. Since it was the seventies I feel like you know the everything was so different back then what we knew about mental antle health and all kinds of stuff and also how would they even. How would the organization even did they have to approve? People I mean how did do they know. Do you get what I'm saying like good. Anybody just walk up and be like I want to do this. I don't know yeah. I'm gary diagnosed schizophrenic. Okay with it. I don't know if he was developmentally. Only delayed or was on a spectrum and I think that that was kind of the catch all back in the day for people with any sort of mental disorder. Agree with that that paranoid schizophrenia. It was kind of like. Here's a label in Pill. Yeah Yeah Okay. So then night of their disappearance silence. Okay ready I'm ready. I'm so excited all right so I cannot ought put the freaking date on here one idiot. It's okay okay. It's the night of their disappearance. They were actually in G-go oh and they went. Their favorite basketball team was. UC Davis In UC Davis Verse Chico Chico UC Davis once they are like on the they all went up there survives on out there Gary Ted Jock bill and the doctors. To Jack's One Jack drove his own car and then everybody else piled in their male drove up there together so the UC Davis wins their punt and they leave the game. They're coming home. They're coming home because the next morning. And they have asked ballgame through the Gateway Project in Rock Lynn. Okay and so there for that too so there there's no reason why they with Nocco home and she going Rocklin. It's like a couple of hours. Yeah just people that aren't that don't know area. Yeah so Chico always north of Marysville Rockland is South Mursal so they lead the basketball aid and just before ten PM. They stopped at a convenience store in Chico and loaded on on Sax for the ride home and this was the last time that an that any of them were seen alive again so but the early morning hours. Here's all the voice. Parents were extremely worried. They they all started calling each other and saying like hey at your house here they your house known own over here so they tried to in. This is a Friday night. The game was on a Friday night. up in Chicago so they they wouldn't have missed that game for anything. In fact the boys were like please wake US dot lettuce. oversleep visit very important to us to get to Rockland could play. Yeah Yeah they were athlete. That's a big deal. So the the parents all sorta talking we totally colder musician gone but they went and we wanted to see their favorite basketball game possible team. That's fair so the weekend came. And with no sign of the five men and then on February twenty eighth Jack Madrid nineteen nineteen sixty seven. Mercury Ontario was found by. US force service worker. It was parked at the snow. Lying in this mountain road on this mountain With empty snappers inside a quarter tank of gas and when it was hot wire is started right up and it didn't Now the report that the it seemed to be is so what part. What Mountain area was it? Okay so I'll explain that now if you're not familiar with Chicago or that. Part of Northern California is basically along like the ninety nine corridor. kind of I guess you would call it ninety nine yeah so Marysville Just a little bit north of Sacramento up ninety nine and just a little bit more. I would say an hour. North Marysville straight up by a straight shot up yeah north ninety nine was Chico so they had a straight shop. Ah One road all the way back into town yes they ended up out in the wrong direction in fucking like near Quincy. Yeah they were not in the right and there was no way this road that they took it was a wrong turn. It had to be delivered there no way they could have taken a a long term in it. I mean it was not just a couple of minutes off their track of those two out. It was like two hours out of the way in the wrong direction and very deliberate. Because is it well. You know that it's far away because there was snow and where they lived. It never snowed like that's how much out of the way it was. Yeah and it was so basically basically they had to get off ninety nine and go on I think entirely seventy of first quincy. Yuck and I okay so I told you at the beginning that I have been here have been here What I would marry every year we go up to these now specifically in the pufus actually get a tree get Christmas and it's very deliberate and in the middle of nowhere and it's on a fucking mountain? It's not like you would. It's there's no way that they accidentally got this. Far Out of the way. And I at the specially with all these maps yeah and while they didn't have while the map calculation I went in November and there was a lot of snow in November and do you here in February and there was probably twice as much now. Yeah fifteen foot SOBEK's so they go on this road to quincy like it is WII laying on the side of mountain road. It's like you would immediately. Even if you did happen to go the wrong way you would immediately be like wait. This isn't the way we came why they had to go through Orrville L.. which is a town? Yeah on the edge of Organ League. Yeah which if they were lost they could have stopped at a gas station. They could've stopped an origo. So the bottom. aww The highway and there were heading supposed to be heading south. They got off the highway. And we're heading northeast. And then they went through the town of Orville and didn't stop and they went through the town of Orrville up more off northeast on a whiny mountain road heading nowhere. It went through Quincy ency and then once you get through Quincy and up these mountains road get smaller and then all of a sudden these logging roads food these dirt logging roads had up to the top of the mountain and they're everywhere and they just they start bigger they get smaller. They get smaller. They get smaller and basically basically it's just roads for loggers to log this mountain. So that's the kind of rotate on. So what did they find okay so they found that there the car with a damaged. Yeah Oh you said that they hot wired and it started right up Susan. No issues with the car still had gas. They didn't run out of gas and all and it was just on the edge of the road. It wasn't like it was stuck. We'll see there was to report there. There is conflicting reports. Some reports said said that it wasn't stuck in some reports secretaries were standing in that stuff. So I don't know maybe they got stuck but if so that's not like really big deal because why the fuck where there. Yeah that's not the issue and and there was five men. They could have dug out their car. I'm sure yeah it's not like it's one small person. They're they're athletic basketball playing men. They're strong they were. Yeah two hundred pounds like they so they had the capabilities. What is to get unstuck if it was so wanting to know about the car? Is Jack Madrid gotTA. This car was his pride and joy like He. Yeah Yeah Let. Anyone drives his car. He be so and it was a heavy car and then at I. Five guys into isn't even a heavier car. And what investigators noticed that it was fairly undamaged from traveling. This road and this road was was brutal it was righted. It was bumpy. It was snowy it was a dirt road. It was twisty turny. An upper mountain and driving a low profile has a car like that. You would top out in you. Were saying you would and they found it fairly undamaged surveyed that meant they kind of assumed that will maybe he knew the area like me. He'd been there before maybe they kind of the suit led them to believe that whoever was driving the car new the road and new high navigated and had a plan and how Dr Without damaging a car in the middle of the night. Was it. This time it's GonNa be like midnight. Oh Yeah I didn't even think about that. They were driving in the door. My God driving in the snow in a Non Snow car a scary enough let alone in the dark on this okay. It's crazy. It is really crazy and scary. So Jack's parents parents said he didn't camping. You've done like being the cold and he wasn't familiar with the area. So that's two of these guys that did like camping where people I'm trying to say. He was going to back to Bucks Lake. That was another one of the voice. Oh John Bat okay. Was Bill Okay Sterling. I think he was one or news it was. It was a different person whose family okay. Sorry go ahead My mind is just trying to process this. Yeah yeah.

"The second version which is more mysterious us while laying inside the car Joe said he heard whistling noises in saw what he thought was a group of men and a woman with a baby walking in the light right of another vehicle headlights joe called for help and the lights turned off in the whistling sound stopped a few hours later he we saw flashlight beams outside of his car and call out for help again but immediately the lights went out Joe Scon- stated his car until it ran out of gas then he you walked eight miles down the mountain passing Jack Madrid's car on the way which he said he didn't think about much of it when he'd seen it until he heard about the disappearance appearance that is bizarre so what would appear to be cooperation of the truck version of the story. There was a woman who reported seeing the five men in a red pickup truck on Saturday and Sunday about an hour's drive from the side of their band car now this lady she owned a store in town on were they were she said to the men came into by food. One of them made a phone call from a nearby phone booth and the other two state in the truck. This is the last report we would hear about that for several months so this is I mean if you can imagine being an investigator on this case what is going on you have to immediately start thinking about the credibility of your witnesses. You have to start then realizing that both those stories that Joe Joe Scott told are ridiculous but you have one words. Kinda cooperated were a woman reports seeing them in a red pickup truck later on in that weekend. I guess I'm confused with the part that the guy gave two different stories from your research. Did it say why he told the I story and then changed it. We'll we'll get we'll get into that in a bit and that's where I was. I also thought it might have been two were. I always had take all the information we get with a grain of salt because it's I mean by the time we're getting this up. especially in these cases a lot of this stuff will come from if if the police reports don't have it news article clippings so you have that issue where like we said earlier if anyone's ever had an interview done if you've had your five minutes of fame or you've done something and you've talked for twenty minutes to a news reporter and they play literally five seconds of it so like are they cutting it down like what's it's happening so there's a lot of things that you have to consider here. What I do is try and distill both versions of the story and realize that both versions are both crazy they really on and then the one with the pickup truck seems to be cooperated again by this woman where you start thinking okay? Maybe they weren't a pickup truck this guys calling out they are disabled so maybe they think of it as maybe threatening and they quick drive away but why are they in a pickup truck they were in in their car. They left like Kinda. Get in the whole concept of what is going on in that mountainside that night that all these weird things are happening thing and you have these guys changing vehicles leaving their vehicle showing up in the next couple of days driving around going making phone calls going to the store. One thing that makes me believe that this woman noted them as a group of five guys is going to be noticeable especially if they're kinda acting developmentally disabled you're going to remember for those types of people and that's what really makes stick out whereas if it was just like a couple of buddies are like one guy they might be overlooked very easily well yeah that's puzzling and I'm kind of going through my head of all the scenarios I could think of what could be going on here. First of all like you said it's it's February in the mountains so there's snow on the ground looking at one thousand nine hundred thousand nine Mercury Montego. You would not want to take that thing off roading. It's it you know it's like when you're big boat type a classic cars from the Sixties Yeah. I'm sure it's probably real drive probably terrible in the snow no definitely not something you take off roading so why they would even be out in the national forests because actually looked up the campsite that they their car was is found near you know it's pretty deep into the plumas national forest so it's not like on the fringe they needed special trucks to get there her and when they specifically note that this must have been a skilled driver that's when you start thinking again not making fun on but you have a group of developmentally disabled people. Only two of them are capable of getting a license. Were they with another person with someone else driving that car for them and now like like you said I don't know the whole time land so I could be wrong but you know the first thing that come that my mind are did they did something happen to them in Yuba or Chico where their car was stolen and then did it get ditched up in the in the national forest because you know it's winter. It's up in the mountains. I you know the it sounds like they weren't prepared to spend even one night laid out in the wilderness so they're not gonna be prepared for cold weather. you know the elements so I can't imagine them. Just you know on their own driving out into the woods. I have a feeling there's gotta be some foul. Play involved in out when it comes to this other guy. What would you say his name was shot? She actress guns are Joseph Joe Skin. I have to wonder you know he's having a heart attack. He's obviously in distress. Could he have have maybe hallucinated some of these. That's that's what I was wondering because I couldn't find like a medical report like yeah 'cause I was an emt from what I know about heart attacks is you don't recover from them on your own. Typically your heart muscle dis dis unless you're a pregnant woman pregnant women women. It's this is actually really neat phenomenon. You can look up separately here. the fetus of a pregnant woman will send stem cells back and actually can repair a woman's heart if they have a heart attack but that's pretty much the only time that you can get repaired heart muscle from a heart attack is if you're pregnant yeah so if he's having heart attacks through the night I I don't know if it's actually heart attack or maybe a panic attack or something else where he just got chest pain. You read my mind so I'm thinking like okay. He says he had a heart attack Zac. We we can't find any evidence through publicly available information that says he had heart attack but just you know common sense from everything we know. I just can't imagine a guy having a heart attack staying there all night and then hiking down the mountain yeah the amount of stress that puts on your heart like he wouldn't have survived. My hunch is he had some other type of medical issue or or a a mental issue where he was hallucinating or it caused him hallucinate because what he was seeing you know maybe a car drove by but in his mind he thought it stopped and people got out Oton gotten to a different car. I guess you know the car that was abandoned when there were two cars were they able to find that abandoned car the next morning ahead of his truck.

"But it's north of Sacramento and directly west of the national forest. Thank you very much. No that's good information honestly because especially for people that aren't are in California for looking it up on a map you you can find a little bit easier so essentially because there are a lot of them live with their parents still their clothes have been laid out in the evening of the twenty fourth before they left for Chico so they're excited about getting back to this basketball game so right away. That's important formation no too because you always wonder. Is there an aspect of them purposefully not returning. They had a fun thing plan that they're gonNA do on the weekend. They went to basketball game before their own tournament weekend. They had their clothes laid out before they left. They played for it was is difficult. Vocational Rehabilitation Center is where they played basketball so that was their team gateway gators and the team Ted. We're had asked his mother to wash his new wight high top sneakers for the term insane. We got a big game Saturday. Don't you let me oversleep so they specifically. They're excited about this. You know it was a big basketball. We can for these guys. They're really early days. Before I phone alarms. I know right so when the Group failed to return Yuba city their families became concerned immediately and call the police lease so again. This is where if it's a bunch of adults that don't really have an issue there plywood raise too many alarms that they went to a college basketball game and didn't come back the next stay. I mean what are your thoughts immediately. If just a normal group of guys they probably went out drinking got a hotel and stayed the night but they were expected to be home home to start this this this tournament so immediately. The sheriff's department began searching for him so just a recap they went from Cuba to Chico for in college basketball game. They stopped at a convenience store on their way back. The game ended about ten so they would have got back probably around midnight you know if they're a little later twelve thirty one. AM and they had a very important basketball tournament. They're playing in over the weekend that they're supposed to be a part of Sheriff's department start searching so we're gonNA fast fast for the weren't anymore. UPDATES till Tuesday February twenty eighth. This is when a forest ranger found Jack Madrid's car abandoned so this is a forest stranger in the national forest. The vehicle was a turquoise and white nineteen sixty nine mercury MONTALTO. It was on an unpaved road near Oroville in the Rogers cow camp area past elk retreat at an elevation of four thousand five hundred feet so this is in the national forest I and it was located around a two and a half hour drive from Chico in the opposite direction of the route. They're supposed to drive home and way up in the mountains in the Plumas National Forest Mike. I know you looked at a map. I think Chico's north correct north of Yuba Yeah Chico's north a little a bit north. I'd say north and slightly West took so I mean they even city they had it's in the freeway. There is a straight south drive. Yeah that would went so they went even farther north twice the distance essentially in the wrong direction up in the mountains and then abandoned in their car was abandoned. It's pretty incredible like they drove twice a distance in the wrong direction so the Plumas National Force against one point five million Acre acre national forest we talked about that. It's unique the locations you because if you look at you on the map it is south of Chico both on the same highway anyway so again. It's extremely easy to get back and forth. It's basically you get on the highway and go all the way and you get off the city so getting back on the highway to head south it'd be it'd make more sense if they got lost somewhere on the way south because the highway doesn't continue the way they went during the investigation. The police did not find anything that would make someone think foul play occurred so the car was unlocked. One Window is down in the keys. Were missing the candy rappers from the things they bought the milk. Cartons and basketball programs were in the car and maps were left in the glove compartment. They did have maps and the directions to get to and from their destination and where they wanted to go home so there's no obvious damage to the car which was a big deal because they said the road they they were on was super bumpy in unmade so basically it was a road that you should be driving in a four wheel or four wheel drive vehicle on like taping type of thing so they must have been driving slow or something because they would have expected there to be damage on the car that was noted in the police report so obviously the road was bad enough that they were surprised at this Mercury Taegu made it as far as it did with no bumps anything essentially they had a quarter tank of gas and they were not stuck in the snow. Basically what confused investigators is that the driver either use astonishingly honestly amount of care precision our new the road well enough to anticipate every single rut. It's pretty incredible and then they had gas they weren't stuck so they're high up enough and there was some snow avail on the ground. They essentially abandoned fully functional car is what they're really looking AETNA and that's kind of what confused them. It's like you have this car of guys there either lost or something and they left a car that had gas that wasn't stuck that wasn't damaged yeah so very very very confusing to investigators working on this so now we have a big gap. Were basically a search churches occurring. They didn't have any updates so from February twenty eighth to March third. We're going to be talking about Rangers. Search the area for five days found on no trace of the men to make things worse soon after the search started a severe blizzard moved into the area and they got nine inches of snow that dropped in the upper mountain so this is an obviously hinder any of the search efforts that they had the search teams had so many issues that they stated that they nearly lost men themselves two days later they had these things called snow cats that were having issues these like the boxy vehicles with tank tracks for snow and I'm trying to think of the do you remember the movie Goldeneye. Can I the James Bond movie I do. It's it's do you remember those things that they had when they earn like Siberia Yup. That's what they're talking about so they had these snow cats. He's things things that could basically navigate all so they're really bringing out some of the right equipment and they they knew the area well enough that they're gonNA get a decent search and even though they had the blizzard going on so as the news the disappearance spread Joseph Scans contacted the police say he had seen the men between eleven pm am and twelve pm on that Friday so we now also have a guy that saw the news comments said you know hey I actually saw these guys from eleven to noon news that would also fall in line with the timeframe of the drive somewhat after they left that that shop so they saw them eleven pm to twelve. Am Yeah Yeah I did say five PM. I meant okay but he saw them in that window and he estimated that time 'cause we're talking. It's it's a week or two later when he calls after he sees the news so he was driving up gravel road to his cabin when his car became stuck in the snow and unfortunately while trying trying to push his car out he suffered a heart attack so this is this is where this is where the and this is why. I don't want to say like the story but this is what really got me see for this story so the Rub for this is there are two different versions of the story both of which are weird and somewhat creepy alright it version one and they come from this guy who suffered a heart attack and did he die from a heart attack. He did not die from the heart attack and so this yes I guess yeah he told the story he told the story but still it's. It's this is going to blow your mind cause. I know you didn't read this yet. In one version while Joe I was laying in his car suffering from his apparent heart attack he saw two sets of headlights coming up behind him was a car and the other was a pickup truck he he got out of his car to flag them down obviously because he's having medical issues. The two vehicles both stopped what he said about twenty feet from him. The passengers passengers got out then left together in one car. Joe Spent the rest of the night in his car before walking back down the mountain in the morning so oh this so okay. Let's recap version one Joe Johns having a heart attack now remember Joe Johns. Is this guy who contacted police saying he saw the group so he's not part of the moon. I'm going to try and keep recapping as much as possible because there's a lot of actors in this story Joe Get stuck on this road again. This is the road where the this group of five that are developmentally disabled drove up with no issue. This guy has a cabin here and had issues driving up this road. He got stuck in the snow. He he was trying to push his car out of being stuck. When he suffered heart attack? He's laying in his car having a heart attack apparently when he sees headlights come up thinking thinking he's got some sort of salvation. He's going to get help. He flags them down. Both cars. Stop the people exit the cars all enter into one car just simply drive away which means they left the pickup truck there apparently then this guy who's having a heart attack spent the night having his heart attack in his car car in walked out to get help and survived so that's version.

"Dot com slash unexplained podcast. Discovery we as body prompted an immediate response from the plumas Yuba county police reconvening the search. They had called off three months previously. Two days later, tracing likely lines from the service cabin back to where the Montego had been abandoned officers soon uncovered another body or what was left of it. It was found roughly halfway between the cabin and the abandoned car lying face up next to a small stream the face and extremities had been eaten away by forest animals sometime after death. Car keys found in the trouser pockets revealed it to be the body of thirty rolled Jack Madrid. Later that day not far from Drew's body. More human bones were discovered scattered across an area of roughly fifty feet. It was all that was left of twenty nine year old Bill, sterling. That those three had now been discovered was understandably devastating for the relevant families but equally so those Gary Matthias and Jack Hewitt. With neither having been heard from over one hundred days in all likelihood they hadn't made it out of the forest alive. Either. Leaving it to be only a matter of time before the others would be found skulls volunteers joined the police to help speed up the search. On the morning of June, the eight Jack Hewitt's father also named Jack arrived to help. Deputy lawns as good been entrusted with the case after the initial search. It'd been ended did his best to discourage him from joining in. But Jack without be dissuaded. A few hours later searching an area roughly five miles from the cabin where we had been found. Jack spotty something out of place in the undergrowth. It was a faded Levi's denim jacket. He immediately recognized it as sons. When he picked up from the ground, a human spine fell out of it. Jack recoiled in horror as police quickly gathered around to take it from him. Hewitt skull was found a further one hundred yards down the hill. Barely a quarter of a mile away. Investigators also found three blankets and flashlights which had likely being taken from the service cabin. But no matter how hard they looked they found. No sign of Gary Mathias. After two further weeks Undersheriff Jack Beecham called off the search for a second time. The bodies were rather remains of the four men that so far being found had been placed into green canvas bags after all Justice supposed psychic Dr Daniel at apparently seen only they weren't sleeping bags, but bodybags? Bill Stelling Jack Madrid and Jack Hewitt's deaths were found to being the result of hypothermia with no apparent signs of foul play. That their bones and body were in the state that they were was merely to been down to the animals that got to them after they died. All the twist left for Beecham was to try and piece together. Exactly what happened and he knew just where to stop. Beach him had his doubts about the twenty five year old Gary Mathias from the beginning where the others had intellectual disabilities of one form or another Matthias had no such thing. Early on in the investigation beach him learned from thises family the involvement with the gateway project and how he met the others in the first place was due to his struggles with schizophrenia. What beach also discovered however was that his history was a little more complicated than that. Matthias had in fact, been in and out of psychiatric hospitals since the age of fifteen I being committed after seemingly having suffered an adverse reaction from taking hallucinogenic drugs. After being drafted into the army at the age of eighteen despite his clear medical records Matthias said to have suffered another psychiatric breakdown as the result of his continued drug use. At one point was arrested after going AWOL. While waiting in his cell. He demanded to speak to the officers on duty only to attack them when they opened his duel with aureus had stripped completely naked before carrying out the attack. Around the same time nineteen year old Thias now living back home in olive. I went to visit his cousin at some point in the night. Matthias was discovered sexually assaulting his cousins. Why while she slept? After being charged with assaulting a police officer and intend to rate with us was facing up to twelve years in prison, but Venturi accepted a plea deal and served only eight months. After his release with his behavior became the more Radic. With his drug use escalating, he found himself increasingly on the wrong side of the law. The were a number of bar fights as well as complaints of disturbing. The peace. One time, but Thia is even said to have turned up high at the house of a couple of new telling them he was going to stab woman in the jaw. Two subsequent attempts to have him committed ended in failure. When Matthias managed to escape on one account by crawling out of a storm, drain. Nine hundred seventy five Gary Matthias, enrolled did Yuba college but struggled with both its conventions and fitting in with other students eventually moved out to Oregon in Washington state to live with his grandmother only to turn up at his mother and stepfather's house weeks later tired to Sheffield he had apparently walked the five hundred forty mile journey home eating food. He found along the way to stay alive. All of which for Beecham made Matthias not only a potential candidate for the merger of the other men, or at least to have led them stray. But also one who might even have been capable of getting out of the forest alive. The Gary Mathias has never been found only serves to heighten this theory. It has also been speculated that at least Thias and possibly Jack Hewitt at made it to the service cabin with Ted. We're only to leave soon after with Matthias being the one most likely to have taken with shoes.

"By Saturday much fourth as the search entered its second week, the Butte and plumas county sheriff's began to question the merits of continuing with the recent storms showing no sign of letting up and the snow continuing to fall heavily. They decided to pull back their resources. For under sheriff, Jack Beecham who was supervising the entire search and his superior sheriff grant. However, it was no question of cooling off anytime soon. Got only to the men's lives. Depend on it. But the entire reputation of the Yuba county. Police department was resting on it too. It was only the year before that then under sheriff Lloyd thinly was arrested on charges of corruption having been accused of stealing weapons money and other valuable articles from the county evidence room, the DA who had prosecuted him believed crimes were merely symptomatic of a corrupt undercurrent in local police practices which had been left on challenged for too long. The case had been dragging on for almost a year by now looking increasingly likely that Finley was indeed guilty. Finding the five missing man alive was the perfect opportunity to win back the communities trusts. For under sheriff Beecham who had been drafted in to replace Lloyd Finley and sheriff grant facing reelection later that year the personal stakes could barely have been any higher. At the beginning of that second week, having put posters up of the missing men all across the Uber and Sutter area and with reports their disappearance daily feature in the local news the pair finally had another lead to follow up. Carol wolves was the owner of local store in Brownsville. Another foothill town of the Sierra, Nevada, just south of Oroville. Waltz had been working on Saturday February twenty fifth the day after the men had lost been seen. When two men matching the descriptions of Jack Hewitt, and Gary Matthias came into stool. The pair was said to board a variety of snack foods before heading back outside to eat. A second witness also called that same day claiming to have seen at least four of the men at the same stool the day after. Two of them who she took to be Bill sterling and Ted we're with sitting in a red pickup truck while to others who she assumed to be Jack Madrid, and Jack you it was seen at a telephone booth nearby. Having previously focused their search to no avail on the immediate vicinity of the abandoned car Beecham now feared that he had missed a trick. Response to the possible sighting in Brownsville, he probably split the investigation into four parts. With the mountain. Search till continuing one unit was instructed to go back over all the evidence. They had tracing the men's movement up to the night that they disappeared. Another would focus on reinterviewing, the family and friends while the fourth focused its energies and trying to locate anymore. Witnesses from Brownsville. Of immediate interest was the description of the pickup truck now mentioned by two separate witnesses. A short time later one friend of Gary Matthias suits suggested he might have taken them in to visit friends in nearby Forbes town, but when the police contacted them they claimed not to have heard from Gary for months. The fund set up by the desperate families. Any vital information raised almost three and a half thousand dollars but failed to yield any significant leads. On and on the exhaustive. Search continued entering a third and then fourth week, but still the men could not be found. The police also failed to find any trace the apparent pickup truck.
