I mean my my father died at the age of ninety three. Wow and he hit. said. If I'd known I was GonNa live this long started taking care of myself a lot. Lot Sooner, hotel. Now. Ninety three's not a bad run. But when I hit fifteen fifty rather I'm sorry I hit if the I said I've got to start taking care of myself better. I got into shape I started working out. Eating better. I stopped drinking I all of a sudden boom I was in fighting shape and by the way after about two months of putting my mind to it, I was back to the weight I was when I graduated high school and that's where I am right now. So eat a lot of protein a lot of fish occasionally nice fat steak but you I'm I'm all the way around you know into all the good kind of stuff. But I I stay away from from really terrible foods for a and just love. Good. Healthy. Foods and vitamins and proteins and complex carbohydrates by the way. So Anyway, thanks for asking you before the the the massive success you had to start somewhere what was life like growing up for you and we when did you Kinda I figure out what you wanted to do. So I I'm fortunate to have grown up in a in a one six kids entrepreneurial family before my dad was an entrepreneur, he was a bartender and one day he said I've saved up enough money to open up my own bars and so he open I heritage Irish pub I was eleven years old now I was just washing dishes and serving food he had me in the back with him counting the money at the end of the day that was a lot of fun by the way okay. In the profit and loss and and and you know at some days, it was good some days people didn't show up a restaurant. You know I mean it it's not an easy business, unto itself but especially, during covert now I started my my dad mentored me to start my own business I had a driveli ceiling of ceiling asphalt when I was in in high school then I was installing air conditioning systems in furnaces on my own heating and air business. I was buying list new homeowners from the courthouse and then calling them and saying, Hey, I'm gonNA come out. We're going to send furnace cleaner out there and safety check on your furnace. We were getting twenty new customers a week and. Then one day watching television and I see wait a minute. There's nothing on this channel I called the Cable Company and they said Oh it's a brand new channel we just launched called Discovery Channel. This was back in the early eighties. Okay. Almost four years ago and I was a new channel. So there nothing on their the set because they don't have the budget for twenty four hours it's eighteen hours a day, and then I said wait a minute I got something I might be able to fill that time with they said, what was your law come down and I'll tell you 'cause I didn't know what was yet. Roddick's on that six out six hours a day nationwide nothing on the air, and so I'm the guy that built with products with with the food saver to Ginsu with Jack Lorraine's juicer George Foreman Tony. Little Fitness Billy mays, you name it with Kaya We started the s you not the industry I owned S Unity Inc as seen a TV dot com we were the guys at seven hundred projects and billions of dollars in sales. So had a lot of fun doing clay was it was an amazing run? Do you often find yourself using against knife to cut through a shoe now in your times of need? You Know A. Don't use it on. Turkey I, use it on mufflers use it. Okay. So you. Out of the House you've you've had a lot of success and the show could be I mean we would love to have you on here for hours but I wanted to get into some really big mindset altering ideas for our listeners. There had been some key mentors along the way. That you maybe you met in person or books you've read. Could you maybe tell us about your relationship to Napoleon Hill's writings and Zig ziglar writings. Napoleon Hill was was the first major book that I read to change my mindset unbelievable I can I can remember just reading that putting it down and being so excited to WanNa go out and start my own business. Because he said whatever you can believe whatever you can conceive and you believe you must be able to achieve and There was another and so Napoleon Hill through his teachings I learnt so much then I met Zig Ziglar and zig was so powerful in my life because Zig said you can have everything a life you want if you help if you just help enough other people get what they want and that's that this is one of the knocks that I've been taking for years from folks that why do you spend so so much time with people even though you're not gonna be able to make any money with them and I'm like because they need. Help they're going to go down a path they're going to spend years spending money losing money I can't let that happen I'm going to help them and so I've I've I've mentored thousands and thousands of people over the years and the book that I wrote Mentor to millions it's not about millions of dollars. It's about the impact that you can have by getting the right mentor who can turn Your Business into exponential success, and so that's you know that that that's why I wrote the Book I've spent a lot of time helping people and I just want to continue to be a mentor to many many folks Dr, Z. We have a living legend on the. Guys. Are How old are you at this point Kevin? I'll be sixty four and a couple of weeks. Sixty four happy early birthday beautiful man you guys are are you came from the pre digital both you guys pre-digital world you built Empires Z.. Derogate this man. I was pre cable digital pre. Pre I was prehistoric What a great story. When did you have your first big success was? Had, you had some success before the discovery channel because that was a move and when that was a bowl that was a bowl. Cool move. When I started my heating and air conditioning business, it was it was going to school I was a freshman in college, and so I go to school till noon and get to the office and that it by first year by the end of the year, we had twenty five employees, six trucks and over million dollars in sales. Now this was nineteen, seventy, six mile. So million dollars and seventy six is. The equivalent of about five million today. Yeah. So by the time, I, got to my June my junior year I couldn't do both I had to stop. So so I mean I ended up selling that business made a lot of money I was successful before finding discovery but it you know I think if I was I was in a Labor or in business that was going to be geographically limited desert. Area where I was from and so I realized yes, I've made money happy. I. Bought a house I bought started investing in real estate I had office buildings and all this..

Jack Lorraine's that we got After your your call out last night the first one is from Barbara Leoni. Her Declaration is not. Don't feel hopeless over politics your podcast. Michael reminded me that the majority of Americans think similarly on so many important issues forty-five would like us to forget that. That's a great point. That's right we are the majority the majority of people go down said. I'll so I'll say this as often as I need to say. The majority of Americans believe climate change is real women should be paid the same as men. mass incarceration incarceration is evil The minimum wage needs to be doubled. Tripled you know. Just go down the list and the American people take the liberal left position on every issue and we need to celebrate the fact that we are no longer in the minority we we are in the majority in fact the majority of our fellow Americans did not vote for number. Forty five is in the White House MAC attack at John Underscore mcdon- says as I will help register voters in my district Eleventh District Michigan Good. Excellent that's what we need. This is Michigan. Majority Georgia people vote for Democrats and yet we have. Had you know for the better part of the last couple of decades. I think I think we have like thirteen. We have thirteen thirteen. Fourteen members of Congress and four have been Democrats four or five. And that's just not right. It's a majority democratic state and yet they carve up the maps and this is going to change now because we passed the law Michigan last November. Making it a crime to Gerrymander into voter suppress suppress and this is all being switched around and getting ready for the twenty twenty cents. An GERRYMANDERING has officially. We've put it in the constitution. In the State of Michigan it is officially over and and are members of Congress are going to reflect the will of the people the State of Michigan. Thanks it's it's a you know you'll read more about her sure because But you know it's a swing district so thank you MAC attack there for getting out there and making sure people vote for her pundits. Try and end push or hit the so called squad those freshmen women against some of the other women freshman in Congress right if the squad there so far to the left. They're they're they're out on on the left flank. They're not you know there are much more like them are. Are you know much more moderate than better. And and and this and that but you know some of these other ones are are wonderful and should not be pit against against the receipt is in the season the ill Hans there in fact I would say I would say Hayley Stevens is the is the non-palestinian Indian Rashida to leave. That makes any sense or shoot appreciate that but but seriously she is. She's in her own way. Every bit of the of the Women Vigor Spitfire Spitfire on fire. You know ready to light a fire hire for democracy There's so many of the of these women that got elected last year that you haven't heard of because the pundits and the Republicans things and sometimes even some of the Democratic Leadership Heaven attack them yet the way they've attacked or Ilan or or Rashida. But but I I can tell you that for every Ilhan in Rashida there is a Hayley Stevens Times three there right now in Congress when we need more of this coming year at Wendy G Baker for my twenty twenty declaration. I can't think of a more important thing to do. micro local level. "One. It's a big trade. On and our position cells accordingly. It's interesting because Jamie, Dimon says eighty percent chance that a trade deal gets done. Goldman Sachs says don't count on it Marcus is this because you Jamie diamond was yesterday Goldman Sachs today relearning more that points towards the disintegration of a trade deal. Almost sure we can ready determine all the way. I it's it's the up in the air. I think that clearly the tactics the Chinese use have been seen before I think it shocked. The Trump administration who've wrecked it's actually not immediately that took a little while to react. They quite aggressively as playbook and the ties are still coming which is the good news. The question is what they come bearing gifts. And go back, basically to the original text, which the Americans thought that that go squared away, and whether or not they can actually in the next few days could couple together something which he's gonna make this deal. Fly. I mean, obviously, the whole rest of the world is on and really look oil currencies in everything is is dependent on this even the US treasury ocean, which went badly was passed because his perception that China had turned up for it. Things the whole world is is interesting because it does it if it's a story. Well, it'd be a big story of China really didn't turn up to the to the ten year. But it seems that he even the expectation that maybe they don't show is easy enough to put off his off how this twenty. I think it's it's a bit like the average that was pretty much a foreign by which is putting all right bias increase in the last few years. Motoric Brian's view options rather than straight through the data's to digitally, China leads that so all right. Bye. It was pretty much on average. But I just think it made people realize that this is any way that China pops can fight back east by buying treasury bonds, even self home because of them nonetheless. There is always that fear that the foreign ownership. Treasuries has been steadily fulling it'd be much more alliance with domestic buying but yields drops significantly. They were you know, year ago or so we're not sort of three calls. Everyone put my hit comes through in a half. A now at that load. But it was the worst metrics ten years or ten year old. We have thirty today. So it's a little bit enough everywhere else. I mean, you see a little bit of nerves everywhere had there. But it's only a little bit equities is the only asset that really is moving on this story. You get a slight safe-haven bid in the yen. Then you get a kind of a bid for gold. But it's not what you'd expect. If a trade deal that was behind a twenty percent gain in stocks year today, all of a sudden starts to disintegrate, right? And just before headed agency. I thought was interesting that just as we sold as long as the political tension still certainly have the power to move that facts and to move the yen because we saw money going in. And as a result of those lines coming out of South Korea about North Korea firing projectiles in a way that the trade tensions. Maybe haven't spent. Yeah. Exactly. Trade. Couple of these trait headlined aren't going to completely stop the equity rally that we see here. There's been a bunch of things, you know, a more dovish fed. I wrote early earlier this week on the on the markets live blog that German stocks that have done pretty well. The last few weeks seemed to have priced in more the weak economy. Low volatility there's been a host of reasons including trade, these kind of back and forth. Trade headlines aren't going to completely derail right now. But are injecting more volatility more tension into the market, and it's just a wait. And see we're not seeing the conditions. So far that we had in the huge four key up. But traders are definitely more jittery and are positioning themselves accordingly as sort of a seen other colleagues smoke is professionally to sort of an eerie calm FX go field Reynolds. So the monkeys like telling us that. Stokes at ground zero. And the dull really isn't moving all that much which means that other FX doesn't really move all that much. How do you see these trade tensions sticking to the delay? Well, the one you have to look at the on. I think that's the most important currency of the law. Even even if it's managed so well is it or isn't it the whole point is they can manage what Kit Jukes of peace today, which is pointing out that you're on reviews the most important cards in the world, it's Rausing up again. But I'm also putting aside stories for the patriot show in which I tend to break more stories than I do in the regular show. Got a good one up on patriot today. Right? It's basically a few stories, but one of them is how differently the Menendez brothers trial would have been if they were tried now instead of back in the nineties with all that's going on with respect to child abuse and some parents sexually abusing their own children. That wasn't a thing in the nineties, especially with with respect to a family being famous on any level. So I've got some examples and how different Lyle and Erik Menendez lies would be now, I'm sure his to pay would be the same, but their lives would be much different. Go check it out. It's on patriot on. Get involved with that. The patriots breaking breaking breaking balls and doing well. So I'm getting set to put together stuff for the podcast. And then I read that famous French singer, Charles asthma, four has died. I don't know if you know this guy, but the man dubbed the French francs and entre is dead at ninety four years old and somehow way back as far as the nineteen sixties he had impact on my life. You say to yourself, how could a young boy on Long Island in the sixties and seventies, you know that this is way before the internet made the world much smaller place. How and why should the songs that this Frenchman sang and the stories this Frenchman told have an impact on me? Well, let me tell you store, and by the way before the day is over, go listen to Charles as Navarre and you know he'll get in your head to man. It's amazing though because I didn't know what I was gonna talk about today, but. Then the world provides all you gotta do is wait. So Charles as Navarre, legendary crooner NS actor career began in occupied France during World War Two started off under the wing of Edith Piaf. The amazing singer for the time you've done. He'd had like fourteen hundred songs to his name. He saw the hundred million records in eighty countries in right up until the end. He sang in concert halls pack with fans who crazy for his kind of style. The way he felt familiar when he sang, he had a melancholy style. He put music to stories. He told stories, we all go through. Go, listen to a song call. She which you might know Elvis Costello covered couple decades ago or yesterday when I was young, he wrote that song as well. That's something that every man the world. Here's that and they fucking the waterworks. Begin on a great French. Song called a j. Malaya diga or basically translates into, I could already see myself and we used to play that my father used to play it when I was a kid. And I say, you know what? That's what he saying because was in French and my father would close his eyes. You know, not because he spoke French. I mean, he heard French during World War Two. He was stationed there among other places, but mainly because sometimes he had those same emotions that Charles as the war was invoking in that song. And probably because he didn't see those emotions through, but that's song is about a boy who leaves his village in France. He has one blue suit that he wears. And this boy believes in cell so much that he could already see himself as a star. That's why he left the village and years later I looked up the words when I was playing it for my daughter and words, made me cry man. But what else is no, some of the lyrics were. I could already see myself in. Photographs in the arms of a star in winter in the snow in summer under the sun. I already see myself telling my life's tale sound familiar. Is that where I got my gumption to risk it all and leave my little village law Allen, I dunno, but songs have away get into the year of a little kid. And then the next lyric is the one I think hooked my father when he was a young man. It says no one ever ever gave me my chance. Others have succeeded with mediocre voices and a lot of money. I was too pure before my time, but the day will come when I will show them that I have talent. I know those lyrics don't sell. They're going to work in a song. Beginning of different languages translate. You'll get it. It's gorgeous, and it's just amazing what one song can mean to a father and son. But the biggest Aznavour song for my family was without doubt song, coal, you've let yourself go. If you listen to this song at different times in your life, different times in your marriage, it will speak. God is just sneaks up on you and punches you right in the gut, and you bend over takes your breath away. It's not like any other love song because it begins with a man speaking to his wife of many years, and he says, says, all right in the first lyric, I can't stand it anymore. He begins to list all the things she does wrong. Your stocking seems not even straight in that all faded dressing down your hair in curlers hanging down. What could I have been thinking of was it with you? I fell in love r u the girl that couldn't spire a heart with passion and desire. I as it you and sheer despair and see your mother standing there. I know it's painful painful. He ends each stanza with the line. You've let yourself go brutal, but as the song bills to its end, he suddenly realizes or maybe he's known all along. As much as he says. She lies and curses and provokes and treats him as a joke. It becomes obvious. He cannot live without her. They're nothing without each other. I dare you to not be crying about this couple. When you hear this song when he sinks at the end he closes with, I'd like to hold you in my arms and then surrender to your charms. Let there be fired, not just to glow. Come close to me. Let yourself go killer. Fuck, I can't what I heard. He died. I went to YouTube and played this song and I fucking bawled my eyes out of ten AM sniffling crying. What a fucking sad vision. Sorry, that's what good songs do a bit words do. It's just so beautiful. So marvelous that that song takes you through this couple's whole relationship. By the way, it's a love song without the person telling the other person. I love you, and that's always powerful. So originally ice to sit around very young boy and my father would drop the needle on that record and play it after Sunday dinner was finished. We had this big green stereo mother called the stereo, but it was a stereo big stereo council. It was all the KADO green. Suddenly my mother's favourite fucking call the paneling. Avocado green stereo console was avocado, green. It was insane. Even the napkins table Raba coddle fucking green, but I haven't forgotten it. So he would play his record and he played for his father. My grandfather Raymond who live with us and we'd all laugh around the table because we remembered how he and grandma for member. I told you stay Ford grandma everyday sign about Bauge always fighting, but grandma grandpa would sit there quietly when that song was played. Not necessarily thrilled to hear it, but he never told my father to take it off. Never. He let the song play several years later now Matija and my parents have been married lot thirty thirty five years by then and when my father played on Sundays, I could sense he was now playing for him in my mother, had my mother let herself go. She was the age I am now, I suppose so little bet bet, but my father did as well. So it could have been my mother singing that song to my father in a way. It was a song that filled our house with emotion and it resounded with those people who sat around the table, Rosalie, Jack Lorraine. Frankie me mommy daddy at Mary and whoever else the fucking tied brought into our house at one fifty, six Neta car because we let everybody in. And because I am Forrest Gump of the podcast world, of course, I should one day meet Charles as Navarre one night in Manhattan when I was thirty years old and working for the new York, Daily News and it was the only time in my life I ever ate at the magnificent Renou near city restaurant, less Cirque. I was invited to dinner by Tim and Nina Zagat there the couple that created the GATT guide. You know, those little books that review restaurants all over the fucking world. Well, Tim Anina were both corporate lawyers. They invented that they put that together and they wanted me to help run a story and get a lot of traction on the fact that they were expanding their guides to the very, very far-reaching corners of the globe. You know, back in nineteen Ninety-two knowing thought about putting his a gap guide and Dubai. Or you know, South Africa wherever they did, and I wrote about that and they were very happy that I did. So they asked him to dinner and I'm in my said that, what is it work? What are you? Why you guys are both successful corporate lawyers, y, you compiling these books on the side. I said, one one. Enjoy your lives. Being lawyers who aren't a great living. And Tim Zagat said to me, AJ a man always needs
