Allot obviously this. Season is all but over at thirty six and sixty five going into wednesday nights action but maliki. They're making some moves and doing a few things including bringing up one of their hot prospects. And that's who. I really wanna talk to you about is curtis terry The first basement tell me about him. And why should range of fans be excited about terry. Became sort of a dragon arranger. She was picking the thirteen round of the twenty. Fifteen draft curtis carried of twenty eighteen. He won the minor league. The tom gries minor league player of the year award in the system twenty nineteen. I'm sorry in twenty twenty. He wasn't on the sixty man. Roster all you know. Do the kobe a lot of minor. League players really hampered developments on a lot of people if you weren't on those specific lawsuit or able to be camps with the team down in florida but he played good this year in the fall league and then this season in the minors seventeen home runs if the three rb is a not at the eight okay. Oh he's been a great piece is going to be a great piece for the rangers. Obviously a lot of them are struggling hidden He came up this weekend for that series against the astros. The astros on a tough pitching stuff so he was held hitless money. Then the lineups win. They night for the rangers against the diamondbacks. The designated hitter. Yeah i mean people excited. There's a lot of buzz about him. So that's great to see the other thing. I wanted to check in on the rangers as that on wednesday The rangers also announced that they signed jack lighter the pitcher of course son of a former major leaguer and he was the number two overall pick in this year's mlb draft and they gave him a huge bonus just under eight million dollars which is the fourth largest bonus in draft history and the largest given to any pitcher since garrett cole got the eight million dollars the first overall pick in twenty eleven Tell us about jack lighter and the expectations and for him one of those two vanderbilt eighth is him along with rocker who he ended up falling the tents and the mets. He's actually dealing with a few elbow issues but lighter was the best pitcher in college. This year actually Even with all the accolade that Rocker had to begin the to begin his career. Low last season this year live was better one of the best bass malls in the in the entire draft killer. Slider i think ranger fans are going to see him called up probably next year. I don't think we waste any bullets with him this year and this sort of wasted season but he had a lot of high expectations with the rangers are known for being an organization that has had much success with their young patriot. Especially in recent years. We've had we've had some are batters. Joey gallo and nick zolak but the pitching gotta calm. And it's gotta come soon. And i think louder is going to get the job. Done forced be a great piece. Great head great. Eighth of our rotation. I should say i do melik right from. Mlb bro dot com. Check him out. He does great work for the website. Maliki appreciate you appreciate appreciated. It talk to you later. Sits jones and for baseball fans take on the game. We hello everyone. This jones how everyone is doing well. I gotta be honest really quick. I'm matt excited for this one right here. The last time i left off. I'll touch briefly on how traceable right around the corner and since then colossal traits unhappy. Or adam frazier go into the project from the pirates and a stable in the twins organization in longtime slugging nelson cruz joining the race. But despite all that there's something else. I saw last week that i have to bring up. I'm referring to the giants dodgers series. Now one might out of all the series. The dodgers entice play so special about this one bro. Well since you're listening to this podcast that means you were born in the last week. So you already know that. This series was going on at the saint thomas the nba finals. And usually i watch games and ordering points mean what's at stake as a result of the game but this come must've me stuck on giants versus dodgers. I mean gays wonderful any heroics yet a fun school for game. While we seventy two chinese with the school was three to two in seven the giant for runs in that any fast forward to the next game. We'll sniff out the get back in the bottom of the night with a three run home run. The following game we saw wilma florez gave his revenge. Would excellent home run in the top of the night in the finale. Another late inning served by giants tadpole stem over the dodgers to win the series. Three one hold up though. Don't think i'm busy. Ignored affective buster posey and his twelve season is hitting greet swinney. What all basements in is over four hundred go with over nine fifty has a catcher and if you miss the series last week i've got great news for you. These same team started a brand new series on tuesday when the giants taking the first three games claiming the best record in the lee in a tough spot in west day by day. We're engine closer to the finish line of the season will pratap tapping every day. Now was setting up for dramatic finish to the season and which may teams all right. there shall reach in theory. Make some deals that could them to the top. This is exactly why we watched the game. We love baseball now. Bringing the closer here's why. Mlb is better than the nfl or nba. And it isn't even close reason. Number four hundred ninety five major league. Baseball is better than the nba am. Better than the nfl. Is that in detroit. They have started the countdown at comerica park the idea that yes miguel cabrera maguy has two big milestones clearly sight and there's a chance that fans could get to see him if they're lucky. Do those things at home at comerica park migas. Five home runs shy of five hundred and sixty four. Hits shy of three thousand ozzy to sixty four hits is going to be tough for what it's not out of the realm of possibility but the five home runs shy of five hundred. Dick could be a special day to be at comerica park to watch. Miguel cabrera one of the all-time great hitters right hand hitters in baseball Perform and reach these milestones. So if you're at comerica park in like left feel they now have big signs up where they change every time he gets a home. Run or a head tracking where you know his ability to try to reach five hundred and three thousand. Hits both on my ballot. If you reach either one of those you automatically get my hall of fame vote so there is something to be excited about in detroit even though the team has played much better of late but miguel.

"And welcome to a new episode of how many the only podcast on the internet. That really counts. I am your host jesse jackson. Joining me is scott. Bob me gary and junior and we're going to do a very quick sports quick hits. I can't do a norm. Can you insert a fake norm. Here can't be the and trump or an abortion. I ended up watching a little bit of the euro game. The soccer game england against italy. Because i had had a couple of people on set listing bruce that were from england that we're excited about it so last night when i turn on the tv it was on espn and the rangers were about to pick so i went. Oh okay i'll watch this. Not that i will know anyone so any hot sports opinions about the ranger top. Pick yesterday with the second. Pick of the twenty mlb draft the texas rangers. Select jack lighter a right handed pitcher from vanderbilt university. Jack ladder sudas name all year long with regards to being the top of the draft. And now he goes number two fastball. Plays up with everybody and could fits in the majors right now. Feeding arguably the best fastball in the draft the comp is walker bueller same school same. Same stuff as a chance to be just this giant thumbs up. Yeah from all accounts. The draft went very very well for the rangers. They got the highest rated pitching prospect. I believe in all of college baseball right boy kind of a lucas type deal best player in the draft but wasn't taken first overall. Yeah i i guess what they said is like. He's the top pitcher from the top college. That produces pitchers. I'm sure he will end up failing because it's the rangers just for now. We're we're a little happy. They did make a really good point this morning on the measures where they were talking about. Not only does he have the arm to throw the pitches but having had a dad who was a major league pitcher knows how to pitch like not just a very very successful pitcher. His dad was really good. Question would be how long till he actually hits the field so they said last night if he had to could pitch in the major league now. I hope they don't run them. Yeah that he's that good but if they take their time and do it right. This would be nice for us to have a solid homegrown ace for multiple years so probably be in the rotation by twenty twenty two. So that's the thought that he might show up sometime at twenty twenty two but you're almost guaranteed to have twenty twenty three. I think the most interesting thing about lighter is typically. You have these high school kids or the college kids when they're coming out especially these. Ace pitchers their arms. Just get worn out. Because they'll throw him they don't care they throw them in throwing role. He happens to have been coming into his own college at the same time as all the kobe and stuff was happening. He has a lot less innings on his arms than most. These guys do coming into the league. So i think that's actually going to be a really really beneficial thing. He has not been overtaxed the way most of those guys out. That's what the commentators last line on. Espn said the same thing that there's a lotta tread left on the tire. The other big news is a little things in the mavericks shaking up. I know we have two massive spurs fans here gary. Let's start with you. Did you think it was time for a change in both the general manager aniko coaches. I did. I had problems with done. Nelson carlisle throughout the years. But it's hard to argue in there really enough if you win season after season and you know. They got to one finals and they won another finals. There's a lot of things over the years. That donny didn't value the draft. So there are a lot of wasted picks. Lucky was having fun with it instead of actually taking the chance on heading out again the second round or whatever so i thought it was time for carlisle's not one for developing rookies. So if you're luca and you show up you're just ready to play. He's great if you're not luca and you're not ready to play. He's a big jerk now. You are a big jerk. So apparently luca didn't particularly like that carlisle was mean to or not good for some of the other guys on the team even though he was kissing lucas shoes. It didn't matter because it bothered luca the treated other people so i think it was time for a change. I'm extremely excited about nico harrison. And i am more than willing to give. Jay kid shot a shot. His first real shots at coach. He'd literally been out of playing for nine weeks when he got his first coaching job. So obviously yet he's had some time to learn some things on that front end in. I you gotta think that his time as an assistant coach with the lakers will help him. Learn how to coach quote unquote. When he was here he learned a lot from coach clemens but he didn't learn a lot from coach mata but.

"I also wanna root for jack lighter and let's say the red sox best player in ten years is a a to ninety hitting shortstop with fifteen to twenty homer power marcello meyer. I think your life will go on eh fine. It's fine for me. The absolute keith. That's what keeps says like best talent in the draft but not the highest ceiling and that sort of what i agree with and if the red sox are blessed they tanked in a sixty game season for some reason. Congratulations to them. They fired their manager and hired a confused old man from the pony town halls from parks and rec. And and that's great but the prize was maybe like you know. The prize might have been a very good shortstop and they currently have a very good shortstop. I'm less. I'm not terrified of this outcome. Take every draft grade or analysis with a grain of salt. I don't think anybody knows nothing. It's the same thing with outside of the nfl. Top five or ten. There's there's no homerun there's no homerun picks look how many number one overall busters been in. Mlb so many So we'll be sitting here waiting but hey With how discouraging. I guess the yankees results have been from first round picks in recent years It's nice to see at least some positive Positive feedback from somebody. Who is very tough grader. On the yankees and keith law. So positively for you on this friday folks and i guess. We're playing three games playing friday saturday and sunday. Jeff passan says on twitter but we won't have aaron judge. We will not have your show. We won't have kyle higashi okay. We will not have jonathan isaac. Nestor cortez or wadi throughout the so bullpen. Pitching staff a little bit decimated. A top two players. I would say In the field in the outfield. Because i think your shelves browley our best infielder Are gone for the weekend. So i don't know i really don't know. Oh it's going to be absolutely awful. Roofer trae amburgey maybe play giancarlo. In right maybe make a trade quickly because right now the team you know say what you will about making changes switching things up benching. Aaron judge is not losing. Your shell is not those are not the alterations you make. If you're interested shaking up the egg is a little bit It's safe to say the season was probably borderline already over now. Let's try to annoy people. Let's see what we got but yeah this is. This is a pretty close to a worst case. Scenario that you can't count for and again a year and a half ago disease. No one ever heard of. Isn't that waleed an entire season. It's insane it's completely crazy thing. That is the kind of thing you mentally come up with when they signed garrett cole your like how can this possibly go wrong. Normal things like he gets hurt It's unlikely he's bad. But then you're like. I guess something like an alien invasion could happen and then of course. There is a pandemic disease that none of us have ever heard of And then the lose base full season to it then they all get back to prevent against it and then they get it again two separate times so again. That's alien invasion curse level best of luck to the gang this weekend. The pressure is somewhat off but they still have to win games. That is it for this edition of the hard podcasts. At an addition we never wanna do ever again but certainly will have to do something similar in the time that i hate this podcast goo podcast spotify. Wherever you get your podcast opposite five. "I read all the now. He really liked it. He and he said what i've been saying this whole time about marcello meyer. I get briefed. It's good to have some happy talk at the end of the podcast and we welcome trae amburgey and hoy parts on the taxi squad but that could change because you know or shallow zip code. I l judges hit in the code. I l jeff passing confirmed during this podcast. You that all of those positives have been confirmed. We all probably anticipated that. But those guys are all going to hit the i l. for real even if they played and i wish that we believe they will but yet brief positive. I mean keith. Law said it. It's basically a he. He he usually hates the yankees to always and prospects he rated yes. A-rated rated trae. Sweeney eighty nine in the draft when they took him twentieth overall and then in this post draft wrap up is like trae. Sweeney rakes so okay. Thanks keith Completely backtracking on your own ranking. But he he likes the draft. He says Richard fitz like. We've been saying if the foot injury is what knocked him out of auburn's top of the rotation which people seem to believe is the case. They took him In the sixth round people say he's a top fifty prospect the entire draft and brendan back. Who the ridiculously say might be close to the majors already. After they took him in the second round is another guy he really liked says. He's a four starter at lowest with higher upside of his ninety. Six hour keeps rejecting a lot so he really likes the enke's red sox. I mean it's obviously everyone likes that. The red sox marcello meyer who was the one one pick who has taken fourth overall but keep law sort of said some interesting things. Which is what. I've been saying that. He probably has the most the purest talent in the draft right now but not the highest ceiling. Which to me. That sounds like a fourth overall. Pick more than it. Sounds like a first overall. Pick and i i. That's what i've been saying all along. He he's sort of incredibly smooth. It short probably gonna stick. Their long-term bat tool is great but the power other players have more interesting and more untapped power potential seeing a very good baseball player who the red sox should be very proud. They have but what keeps. Didn't say and i will say is a lot of people are panicking about this. The reds had great shortstops before the red sox have zander. Bogart's right now who might be the best shortstop in the american league. It's close you know. Maybe not maybe correa better and that's fine. But he's a top five shortstop in major league baseball. I know what it looks like. The red sox have a great shortstop. You know. I know what that looks like. I don't know what it looks like when the red sox ace jack lighter atop the rotation chris sale is different. He's he's built differently. He's been out for a year plus with injury complications. He is sort of a freak. Jack lighter is someone where they consistent delivery who could potentially do this for fifteen years. Well we do know what they look. Like as pay. Pedro we experienced. That's scary. i don't like it. It's it's frightening. You didn't wanna face them. Every time he was on the mound. So i i would agree. I i'm happy. They did not get jack letter. That would have been very bad for us over the next year..

"They've won three championships. There last one was back in twenty sixteen and their notable alumni. Shohei ohtani twenty thirteen through twenty seventeen. Then he went off to die in. Anaheim should've stayed in all. Yeah the angels at the draft. They drafted all pitchers pitchers. They drafted by all pitchers. But you know how good 'cause they're not like detroit who the twitter world like. I guess that's where every choi tiger fan congregates hated everything of who they drive. Ury forgotten. Jack lighter glider west texas. I was very sad. We gotta shortstop needed. And the mets gotta fricken the rocker more. And i'm just like yeah. How many more great pitchers do need man. Because he's going to be a tunnel year project and then he's going to be playing in the big leagues this. This competent mets team is gonna ask me because there are division. And they're the tea that you guys face every season so can't do. I mean if the mets are better than the yankees for decades. I mean i think that was the eighties right. That was the mets. Were better than the eight be fairly. What's the world series at twenty fifteen and nod memorable theories out there so it's yeah well remember. Everybody remembers our world series even only lose. No-one really remembers the sango fish. All right so Let's so yeah. So the nippon ham fighters soc otani yu darvish nother alumni. That's currently playing out in san diego. We are yara. He's also another curve ball player in major league baseball. That played for them. And pass one here. Hickey okajima if you remember that and that's a play remember. forget boston. Red sox seven world series where he won there and As far as manager trey hillman was the marlins current third base coach buddy-buddies with don mattingly used to manage the royals as well before agnete ios took over the job and then they won the world series a few years later and but he managed that team back in two thousand six and they won the japan series championship. So he's he's had. He had success back japan. So yeah nippon. Ham is actually a meat packing company so it is a sponsor team so they other leagues in in international markets have already sold out folks. Okay but but call them. Ham fighters makes me think that resistant towards ham. Just imagine water. Vegans just punching pigs. Man i bet you that would sell someplace. I listen i. I can get down for that animal cruelty of. I'm just talking about like punching packets of beating butcher's. Oh yes so yeah. There's there's that and they moved to sapporo in hokkaido in two thousand and four. "Allied or not even close. It's it's actually not even close when we signed him. You know his son just got drafted. Congratulations jack lighter out of vanderbilt as the number two pick in the draft and it was fun to see our on. Tv put a texas rangers uniform on his son and we brought in al because he was a longtime marlin a fan favorite and he had more mental issues and not mental health. It's not about anxiety or depression or concern. He had things that he needed to do before. He pitched things he would do. While he pitched had certain ticks. And i don't mean that in the people who actually have ticks. I mean in the way of just bolts. That's what's i can't think of appropriate your routine's grison thank you dan it's eight. He had idiosyncrasies that to me if you're going to have those they better result in results and all they resulted in was losses and lack of performance and no leadership with our pitching staff and five that we thought we'd get but that doesn't make them strange but the idiosyncrasies that he ad were the most of any player and years a lot of superstitions in baseball his superstitions indian crisies where the number one of any player over eighteen years strong lists. Especially when you lead off with a guy who's idiosyncrasies was to walk around the clubhouse naked covered baby powder. David is that we always enjoy. We got to top five lists so left in In our back pocket. We're going to have to kick. That can down the road for next week. So your top. Five billons and bodies in baseball next week. David make sure. "Room like for them in the moments when they realized that davis is the guy who the pirates are going with. Because i think that one thing we saw just in the fan reaction on twitter particularly once we got to detroit and marcella was stolen. The poured there was an expectation among tigers fans. Like gosh we're going to get the you know the highest ranked guy in the draft because he still available here. What is team going through in those moments and you know when you look at a team like detroit where. They seem to have stuck with their verbal commitment to jackson job. What are the considerations that they're sort of thinking about as their time is coming up on the clock. I mean it's almost easier to pick really high because you only have to line up a few magnets if you have the fourth pick in the draft. Pick your for best players and take what's left a lot easier than picking nineteenth where you have to think about eleven or twelve players who might be there and make different decisions as far as how you're gonna use your bonus money but i think once davis came off the board. I don't think it complicated too. Many things for teams. We kinda got some some information. The sun on sunday morning really that the rangers were really jack. Lighter bust no matter what was going on. They were taking jack lighter and so that one was simple. I think tank the rangers were a set thing and then all of a sudden it felt like detroit was a set thing. I think detroit Some detroit fans like you said are kind of upset about this. I think detroit should get some praise for acting honorably if you will you know. Detroit was we thought all along. A tweet was choosing. It was a assume their favorite player in the board. I think was meyer. I do think detroit was felt. Detroit was choosing between jackson. Job and brady house will typically went much lower than that and they had a handshake deal in place with job and they honored it. And that's what that's what allowed meyer to go to boston. And there might also have been money stuff there. We're not really sure what mars gonna sign for. You buy these assigned and all of a sudden boston after spending all of this time. Trying to get jack lighter down to them had in my mind and areas might as well the best player in the draft sitting on their plate. Four i don't think the first four picks were complicated. I think the biggest scramble probably five with baltimore where they're wondering if one of the quote unquote big four is going to get to or something. Weird's going to happen in front of him and there was possibilities. Now there's late talk of pittsburgh talking to khalil watson. I got very strange leading up to the not knowing who has presented take but i think those first four actually kind of pretty easy in the first real scrambles probably baltimore who was considering some of the high school shortstops watson lawler who are available. We're considering some of the college outfielders on a bit of a What the ended up doing in the end with gordon kawser. Yes it will ask about meyer. Who went to the red sox with the fourth. Pick but you alluded to the red sox soko with lighter. How did that work. How do you things try to maneuver things. So that if you have a specific player in mind you've box out the other teams. Are you tried to get that player. Obviously it didn't work in this case and later went to the ranger with the second overall. Pick the radi out of enterpill. But what was the mutual attraction there and what leveraged teaser players have when it comes to that. When later was in high school he was a late first. Round comp round prospect coming out of high school and went to the same high schools and volpi. Who's crushing in the yankee system. Right now and they were all well scouted well known and you know the lighter family limited the number of teams that they felt as though they were willing to sign with to like the new york teams and philly and so it seemed as though that the family wanted him to end up in a certain market preferably one close to home base. Then there i had secondhand information basically throughout this process that the club picking high enough that sort of fit this bill for the lighter family and allied are just was not necessarily tight lipped about this around certain other people in the industry which is found out is that boston was the target. This time which makes sense. Like the metal. Pick until ten and yankees. Don't pick until twenty philly was in there at thirteen. I don't even know if philly was necessarily an even in their mix coming out of high school though. I the to new york teams were and so you know what you do. Is you throw out a huge number. Like a number that texas would be intimidated by and decide to move off of you because of real with real fear that if they don't have whatever it is ten million that they want to give you that they won't sign you so it didn't work. The lighter family seemed elated when he went second to the rangers. It wasn't like the ally manning putting on a chargers hat situation where he had a sour on his face. At the podium with the commissioner of so i think that it's fine. I think he's gonna sign. But i just think that it's fine like i think these kids should have a little bit more agency. I wish that they could pick thrown employer with something that a little bit more normal than they have but But yeah this is. This is the situation. And it's just so hard if the rangers pick your second and offer you slot which was like seven point eight. Are you really going to go back to school and bet on worry that you wanna be being bad the rest of this year and picking high enough that you wanna go there like it just doesn't make any real practical stance which is why towards the end and we just started mocking lighter to texas as it just seemed the logical fit like the family and the player. If would blink and decide that this is fine that the rangers are fine. And that jack is going to be good no matter where he is speaking of teams that were bad last year but no longer are..

"The course of the season while we really got our sea legs and became A machine that was a fantastic ball club that jack. Thanks for the call appreciate it. That was one of the teams that i gave me an appreciation for the college world series. Even after the fact we watch college world series reruns in once. Roger clemens was already in the big leagues. Who pitching for the red sox nineteen eighty-six and that great team they had. Oh that dude played in the college world series in the more i learned about it. Oh barry bonds played in the college world series. I don't remember mike schmidt reruns highlights but when he was at ohio he played in the college world series. And we're going to see more and more of this. The way major league baseball has now absolutely doug. Its teeth into what college baseball does from a production standpoint and using it as a farm system to get jack lighter and kamar rocker as top. Ten picks eighty percent of the first round. Picks in this year's draft came from college baseball instead of trying to project where a high school kid might end up. And what he's going to be they know what these guys are. They have a very good feel for what they are based on what they did in the sec. Or what they did in the pac. Twelve a big twelve and so. That's why you saw those results. We've got more to come. We wanna take your calls and we'll revisit some of the show that we've already had today. Eight five five two four two seven two eight five appreciate. Jekyll and there will not be is cool draft. "Yeah no you're right talk to me about. It's usually for years. You and i would have this conversation in the reds traffic of the top five and so the names that i would ask you about where names that most people knew. Because that's what happens when you're when your team is drafting near the top. Here mill. the pack right so at seventeen overall. There's not that one name to focus on so give me like three four. Maybe five names that reds fans should start to get used to talking about between now and sunday. Though the thing. I've heard the most is college pitcher and that's a very common thing to hear for team drafting in that area. One of the names is ranked cusak pitcher out of wake forest. Who has done of the best stuff in the entire draft class. A six foot six hundred thirty five pound right hander. Who had the seventy fastball on the twenty eighty scouting scale I curve ball. That can get plus questions about how he can command it and a lot of people think he's going to be a reliever long-term but i think that's the name that would be really interesting to land there. I on the safer side more of the. If you're comparing cusak two hundred green the nikola would be the jordan. I picture that has an already plus plus change and absolute Fall out of the sky type of pitch that's going to give hitters trouble. Throws everything for strikes doesn't have an elite fastball. But a guy you can see moving quickly through the system That the name that i wouldn't be surprised Gutter huddling is an interesting name. If he gets to that point this guy was probably going to be a top five pick but unfortunately suffered an injury. But when he's on his best he was right. Below that jack lighter and kumar rocker quality Four pitches bats and he throws all of them for strike. So i would say those three guys would be the names to keep an eye on and then what other a kind of kinda sorta local guy or closer to Same bachmann out of miami of ohio. A guy who If he was going to a different school probably be a locked for a top five. Pick as two elite pitches in his fastball and slider in his starting to throw his change for strikes kind of the the big bigger version of maximizing last year's class who was the third overall. Pick so names like that. I think are going to be the names that are associated with cincinnati. Going forward of of those if you're a reds fan or if you're if you're if you're drafting on behalf of the reds and all of those guys are available which who knows if that'd be the case. Is there one that you would have your eyes on more than the others. i think bachmann. I think that that would be the guy that i would have the most interesting just because i think that collegiate arm. He's the one that offers the most upside. And there's a decent floor here too like if he can't contain his delivery well enough and if the command doesn't improve a little bit certainly has the control the start but the command is different than control. That would be the armed. That i'd be interested in because if the worst came to worst you could make him a lights out reliever but there. Is that chance that if everything max is out for him that's the top of the rotation starter i would put Cusak probably third Our second in that list Hoaglund surge just because of the injury risk. And then i would say that which would be forced..

"You, of course and July 11th is not too far away. And I've seen some of the things you've written and watched some of the things on TV. Keep. There are a number of short stops and really quality players at the top of this draft, more so than the pitching, I think, And how do you see the first four or 56 of these selections going? I think you said it exactly right that there's this has turned out to be a better draft for high school players for high school hitters than for pictures. Then we expected the start of the year. All the talk was about the college pitching. That college pitching hasn't really held up and I think the first couple of picks you're going to hear names like Marcello Mayor Jordan Lawler and clear Watson, all three of whom are high school short stops in California, Texas, North Carolina, respectively. They're all going to go in the Well, we lost Keith. They're a little bit keep you there. Yeah, right right after going to call him back. I think the the shortstop's heard their names Bill last kids, but it's interesting what he says. And this is what I've seen on TV and we'll get Keith back with us. But the top four or five picks his short steps. All look like Carlos Correa. You know, I was looking at that this morning also, and you know you're talking about short stops in high school, Marcello Meyer. Is a short stop by the east like high school in Southern California. He is one of the top picks as a shortstop, and I want to talk about these two guys out of Vanderbilt. Of course rack are And a leader. Both those guys are their top right handed pitchers, and they've just been dominant the whole time, Especially Jack lighter. He was dominant in the World Series. I watched a lot of those games with Mississippi State. As well as Vanderbilt and boy, They got to some young arms, Marty with some flash to him, and I mean, those are the kind of arms that people like They want to see velocity, and they want to see if they can control what they have in top moments like the World Series. Keith Law is back, Keith, We lost you there for a second. As I said some of the shortstop's probably were offended. You didn't include them. What do you have to say? But you lost me. I was I was still talking. Apparently, Yeah, it happens. That's why we have live radio. But going back to the very first question that is We've built just mentioned a couple of the short stops now teams at the top. Are they rebuilding teams? Are they going to go for high school players or like Bill said, Do you want to Jack lighter or Kumara Rocker? Mhm. I think that Marcella mayor, the high school shortstop from Southern California, he's the most likely player to go first. Overall, That's Pittsburgh. These are a lot of rebuilding teams up top Pittsburgh picks First, Texas has had a horrible season in the major leagues, the second Detroit who's pretty far along in their rebuild where they've got some good young pitching in the big leagues now, Casey, my street school Bull. We've got a number of good hitting prospects in double a They're further along in the rebuild. That's the club up top. That wouldn't surprise me if they went for a college player. Just thinking not that they don't like these high school short stops, but thinking that those guys might take a lot longer to get there, whereas if you take a good college player if you take Jack lighter, which is the one college name I've heard them linked to a few times he's in the majors, probably in a year and a half, whereas it's kind of Marcella mayor is It could be four years before he's in the big leagues, or maybe before. He's good enough to be having an impact in the big leagues. And if you're Detroit, by that point, you already hoping to be getting to the playoffs, So maybe you'd rather even if you give up a little bit of feeling rather take a college player who, you know, impacts your club a good bit sooner. Keith. When you talk pitching, I watch the World Series, of course, Rocker at leader where amongst the the men compared to a lot of the other pitchers. But are those two guys your top pitchers? Because there's a lot of pictures when you start looking at Mississippi State that a couple real good arms on their team? Are these the two guys that really everybody's looking at? When you start looking at the top line, starting pitching I think they're the first to college pictures to be taken. I feel better about lighter going somewhere up top than rocker. There are some teams that are just concerned about rack are you saw in his that the winner take all last game of the season? Yeah. Rocker showed the stuff was there, but the field command poised, they weren't what you want them to be. And I think that's had teams a little bit scared just because of where we're talking about the very top of the draft. If he gets to the mess at 10 or the Nationals at 11, they're going to take Rocker and they're going to laugh all the way home, So it's not that he's not a prospect. The tunes are looking for very fine distinctions between players. The fact that lighter did pitch well in some very difficult situations. High stakes situations towards the end and rack are pitched not badly, necessarily, but less well less consistently. That could push him down. There really isn't another college picture right behind those guys and will Bednarz probably the one you're talking about pitch the last game. Mississippi State may be the best slider in the draft class. He's a first rounder. I don't think he gets up into the top 10 like the other guys. Mm. By Keith Law with us. You can read him in the athletic and he's going to have a lot to say this week and, of course next weekend. With the draft coming up Keith last year Torkelsson who was some ASU and want to carry Crowley, one of our compatriots, favorites went at the top as a hitter. What about hitters and some of the teams that at the top of the draft Looking for hitting. Where do you see some of the top hitters going? So this is the weakness of the draft. The college hitters are just not there and the guys who are likely to go high among college position. Players are going to go hide more because they are good hitters for their position, as opposed to a Torkelsson, who was maybe a first base in the long run, but he mashes and he is matching right now in Double A for Detroit. Think Henry Davis, Louisville catcher. He's the best college position player in this draft. He can really throw. I think he's good enough behind the plate and going to get a lot better. He's got great plate discipline and has shown quite a bit more power this year than anyone anticipated. You may also hear the name Matt McLean Here's a first rounder three years ago out of high school to Arizona. Two Diamondbacks but decided not to sign. He chose to go to UCLA and honestly, for two years. It looked like he'd made a bad choice. But he really had a breakout season as a junior for the Bruins. He played better defense than ever a shortstop. He was hitting for more average who's making more hard contact and did it against good competition..

"The win and extras but even early on starting in the first inning of that ballgame kumar. Rocker just did not look like himself. And that seemed to be kind of a trend throughout this college world series. I know vanderbilt managed to get the win there. Even though that wasn't kumar rockers doing he pitched friday against nc state. The problem is that was basically. Nc states jv squad and he looked dominant again. But that's that goes back to what i mentioned earlier that if kumar rockers playing against a team that he is just a lot better than he truly does look like one of the. Most elite pitchers you've ever seen in college baseball if he's playing against a lineup that has talent that has elite level talent on the offensive side. The ball kumar rocker at times looks a little more mediocre than you would expect so he dominated against an nc state lineup that was closer to their jv squad and then wednesday night he came out and kinda got roughed up against mississippi state Now all of this was not kuma rockets fault. Vanderbilt's defense led him down a little bit way too many errors throughout the college world series for vanderbilt. They committed three more wednesday night which brought their total to thirteen for the college world series. Foreign away the most from any team in this year's college world series defense wins championships and defense did not come to play for vanderbilt Recall back in game. Three rocker had a easy ground ball. Hit back to him that he spun and tried to start a double play to get out of the inning. I can't remember what inning it was in. And instead you basically just short arm the ball and senate out into center field that kept the inning alive. Mississippi state got hitting after that and added another runner to things like that. The defense has to help. And i understand that one was on rocker himself. But just all in all the defense for vanderbilt in this college world series. They were not there Up to this point vanderbilt had kind of been living on their bats. Because the defense wasn't there i mean against arizona in the opener you were in a situation. You got taken to twelve innings. I think it was before you one seven six or something like that Then after that you got beat by nc state one nothing. You're you're bats. Didn't show up. Jack lighter had a phenomenal performance in that one only gave up one run on a home run. But you're bats didn't show up and you lose one nothing then. They managed to write the script just a little bit. They flipped it. And then you got lucky against nc state the nc state basically jv squad you manage to beat them and then you didn't have to beat them again because the game ended up being basically a forfeit a no contest vanderbilt advances and then we saw what happened in the college world series finals. That's all there really is to say about vanderbilt in this college world series final and in this college world series as a whole jack lighter did his job phenomenally well. he pitched in two games. He gave up one run in the first in the first outing that he had and he gave up. I believe it was two in the second one. You went one and one. Because you're bats didn't show up in the first one that you only gave up a home run Kumar rocker looked a little off throughout this entire college world series. The vanderbilt defense looked a little off throughout all of this college world series. Those are the keys to vanderbilt. That's the reason. Mississippi state is the national champions. Now that is not to take away from what mississippi state did at all by any means what will bed nor did in this year's college world series is just phenomenal Go back to the opening round where bednarz pitched against texas and mississippi state. One that when. I believe it was two one and bed nor only gave up one run Against the number two national seat. That's good stuff from a guy who's been shaky at times bed nor has the stuff but the problem is his consistency has not always been there. That's the reason. His draft stock was a kind of up in the air. Coming into the college world series. Well in your opening round that you pitched against texas. You did what you did. You looked phenomenal. And i think that got the eyes of some scouts out there that helped draft stock a lot and then in game three winner. Take all of the college world series final. Going up against kumar. Rocker will bed. Nar through six innings. No hit ball with no runs. And i believe to walks potentially and he wanted to go more but chris limos. It was actually pretty funny. Bednarz in the dugout was trying to talk. La- mona's into letting him go back out for another inning and you could read the bonuses lips and he was like. I don't wanna hear it that. Basically your future is more important than pitching another inning. Here in omaha will bed nor did his job extremely well. If you're mississippi state fan you deserve to send a thank you to that guy because that guy is the reason y'all or national champions first national championship in mississippi state history the History of their university at least for a team sport perspective so phenomenal stuff will bed nar rightfully so one. The most outstanding player from this year's college world series. And like i said. I just went through what he did. It's quite obviously deserved so phenomenal stuff congrats to mississippi state for just being the best team in omaha this year yeah. They didn't go into undefeated it but all in all they were d- most balanced the best team that you saw in omaha.

"You're looking at this as mississippi state. Hey we gotta go through jack lighter junior and it's going to be tough sledding here down six already after the first inning. They were able to squeak by another run. In the top of the fourth inning ultimately lighter gave up a double and then a single down the line to give this second run but that was the most mississippi state would get out a lighter later. Finished off the day with the box. Score of six innings. Three hits two runs. He had three walks in eight strikeouts so he ends his year with a two point. One three era and then vanderbilt's bullpen. Continued to come in and close the door with nick. Maldonado going three scoreless innings only allowing two hits in his. Era went down to two point. Three one so offensively. The big blow once again was the three run home run in the bottom of the first inning by third baseman jason gonzalez but overall vanderbilt only had five hits in the game so the offense for the commodores. Although they were able to score it runs really wasn't that outstanding and this was kind of a precursor of things to come because mississippi state on their own right had five hits so there wasn't a ton of action going on in this game offensively mississippi state was led by logan. Tanner behind the dish. He went two for three with an rbi. And then you had cameron james. Of course taken lighter dp ended up one for four with an rbi in the matchup so game one goes to vanderbilt's and this obviously when it's a best of three is a huge victory since two thousand three in the seventeen years that they've gone to the best of three final format. Of course you you're thinking eighteen right. Oh three to twenty one well. Twenty twenty did not crown champion. So yeah there were seventeen years well teams that one game. One have won. Eleven of the seventeen college world series. So the odds are in your favor. If you're winning game one ultimately to pull out the series it stuff for that other team to come back and win back to back games still to lee crown national champion so game to the following night mississippi state bounce back with a vengeance. They won game two by a score of thirteen to two. And this one. They put up a lot of crooked numbers. The offense for mississippi state really showed out in the bottom of the first ending. Mississippi state got on the board led by a score of one to nothing. James reached on a throwing air by vanderbilt's and there's more to come talking around the air's for vanderbilt here as we go through game three but handcock single through the right side and ultimately james scored which was an unearned run from vanderbilt side of things. But that made it one to nothing. Mississippi state through the first inning but vanderbilt was able to bounce back in the top of the second inning. They tied the game up at one. As let's see here. Gonzales walked and then young reached on a fielder's choice ultimately to to score the run there so one to one after two innings and this is where in the bottom of the third inning mississippi state ultimately broke out and separated themselves. The inning started with a single by allen. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch. James walk to make it first and second nobody out. Handcocks walked behind him so bases loaded. Nobody out and then. Tanner walked to score a run. So three straight walks in the bottom half of the inning still bases-loaded loaded nobody out vanderbilt. Then made a pitching change. but ultimately i really didn't improve for them as drew bouli singled through the middle a couple of guys scored there to make it four to one comers reached on a fielder's choice a run scored clark walked advanced the second on a wild pitch fourth then struck out in jordan grounded out so it could have been even worse for vanderbilt but they were able to escape only allowing four runs and the bottom of the third inning. Now right back in the bottom of the fourth mississippi state scored once again to make it five to one. This are six to one at this point Drew bouli doubled to score alan. Who had singled earlier in the in the inning soap. It was now six to one at this point. Bottom of the fifth they tacked on two more runs to make it eight to one. And then in the bottom of the seventh-inning put it out of reach making it thirteen to one before vanderbilt. Got themselves a run in the top. Half of the ninth inning. So vanderbilt's pitching staff really struggled here in game two especially star christian little who only went two innings allowing three hits five runs four of them earned but a lot of this was due to the four walks. He faced fourteen batters over the course of those two innings walking four so his era of five four eight on the year but the bullpen struggled as well patrick riley one inning one run nelson burke which three innings to runs hunter owen went one in allowing five runs. Before don yeah evans came in for a scoreless bottom. Half of the ninth vanderbilt was only able to muster us four hits against the mississippi state pitching staff the entire night houston harding. When four innings allowing two hits one run and then he was followed up by preston johnston or johnson who went five innings allowing two hits and one run so a huge combine out in from mississippi state's pitching staff houston harding and preston. Johnston where fantastic coming out of the bullpen and mississippi. State's offense like i mentioned. Fourteen total hits for the thirteen runs. They had four guys with multiple. Hits tanner allen in luke. Hancock scott drool and lane foresight all had at least two hits on the day to ultimately force a game three and it could have been a lot worse than those thirteen rents. I mean vanities pitching staff as a whole ten walks. Four wild pitches to hit. Batters giving up fourteen hits. It took a hundred and thirty nine pitches for them to just get through five innings. And like i mentioned the bulldogs had left. Fourteen runners on base so the eleven run loss for vanderbilt was the most lopsided college world series loss in program history for them and it could have been even worse. But that's why baseball is a great game. I mean you can get your tail kicked bounce right back and win that next game. I remember back in college one of my days. We were playing. Miami of ohio and a double header. We lost game one by a score of twenty two to bounced right back a half hour later and beat that squad by a score of six to five. Now one of my football roommates. At the time. I remember talking to him and he goes ken. How is it possible to lose to a team. Twenty two two and then beat them a half hour later right because football. If you're better than a team you're typically better than a team and it doesn't matter. How many times do you play. You're gonna lose that game. And i basically just said hey man starting pitching. That's really what it comes down to. If you get a nice outing or a bad outing games can go a lot of different ways so game. Three the final winner take all..

"That's cool. You know, Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska this time of year. I mean, you can just the humidity is just going to be awful, too. But I'm going to ask you because so many you know the drafts coming up and so many kids are going to have the decision that you probably had, and others had, which is you know, you went to Saint Francis. And then you went to U. C L. A You go pro. Do you go to college? Crystallize that that decision for us as far as how you see it, because there's lots of kids who are going to get drafted out of high school and they may go in the first couple of rounds and get a good bonus or they may not. But That argument is like, hey, if you want to be a pro baseball player, you ought to start, you know, being a pro baseball player early versus the value of the whole college experience and the college development. How hard of a decision is that for guys? Well, Larry, I think you've got to ask yourself. You know, a few different questions. Like what? You know. What do you want to what do you want to do? Right? Like like, What are we trying to accomplish? Here is the goal to be Major League baseball player, and that's the end all be all and I'm going to you know, I want to start this process ASAP. Then then, even if you do Answer that question. And the answer is yes. Then. You have to ask yourself. What's the best route to get there? And I realized that anyone would tell you, Bo. Hey, it's center pro ball in this map, Whatever. But You know what you entered professional baseball. The cost starts. And there's a certain amount of time that you're going to have. And so when you go there and you sign a special contract, you better be ready. You better be ready to play. And I could I could tell you that Look at 18 years old coming out of ST Francis, a 38 round draft pick by the Dodgers. Was I ready to go to? I think it's great falls, Montana it and start this journey. Um, to play professional? I don't know. I think I want to figure it out. I think I would be fine. But I also had a vision of part of the process, including college and going to college for at least three years, if not four years. So then, three years later. Was drafted in the fourth round by the Houston Astros. And then at that point, I had a difficult decision to make because They had signed Landsberg been with their first pick, and they didn't think Lance Berkman is going to follow on. So they Astros basically wasted all their money short changed everyone after that. They didn't sign their 2nd 3rd or fourth round pick. It's got to be one of the only teams in the history of baseball to ever do that. And so I went back to UCLA. And you know, when I made that decision, it was. I think I was. I was a lot. Um Say headier in a way where it's like, look. If I believe in my ability I do. I do believe my ability to run the question. Uh, I knew I could play in the big reach, but I also said Look, if I go play one more year. U C l A. All I'm doing is skipping out on a euro minor leagues where another year in the pack is just as good in the minor leagues. But I also knew that when I signed the clock was going to be able is going to be chicken and I was going to have a two year window to figure it out. And it didn't mean I had to get the big we went in two years. I definitely had to be on the knocking on the door of the big least. And it literally was exactly like two years from what I'd signed where I made my major league debut and It's uh but it's look everyone's different. Um, you know, I don't I think now I look at it more as like a father. Right? Where? What? What if what would you tell your kids What if your kid had a scholarship to one of these big time Smalls, Vanderbilt or Stanford or UC LA and they could go get a great education and they go play college baseball for 34 years. And what if they happen to be a really high round draft pick and you have this opportunity to go play professional baseball? Ultimately, I think it's a kid that has to make that decision and I talk it Jack lighter, for example. Jack. Later I met when he was 11 years old. And Jack lighter. I was working without MLB is where I first started there. So I followed his progress and progress and progress and progress. Old son. He's 18 years old, and he's coming out as well. The top pitching prospects in the country work I'm doing scouting reports on Jack Wider saying like this dude might be A top 10 pick. And he actually slaughtered more in that 10 to 20 range of where he actually would have ended up. I think we had like 18 or so that's remembered being like late teens and I talked. I talked out now how signed out of high school and then went on to pitch 20 years in the big leagues and his More than financially taking care of for the rest of his life. He's made some really good investments along the way as well. So money is not an issue right. It was zero issue for Jack Euro issue for Al Um And I said it doesn't matter who drafts him. I don't care if he goes number one. Overall, he's going to college. And it was like really like is that are you that passionate about? He said. Yep. He's like I am And sure enough, Jack wider with the college and his freshman year through no hitter, and now we're looking at at Jack. Potentially being the number one pick in the draft, uh, coming up and he's developed into one of the best pitchers ever in college baseball. He's he's really that good. So I just you know that's that's else perspective..

Well thank you for up i watch. I watch world series last I thought mississippi state you out that goes. I thought about that. They played like literally team right. Well i think it's You know. I'm just a fan. I'm not. I'm not an expert but i think it starts frank with the pitching and the young young pitcher for state Had struggled in the in the last outing and sadly He just did not have any stuff on that stage and he got blown up while i was but and and and and conversely on the other side I mean they're up against you. Know one of the best pitchers in the world in college sports and you know jack lighter is going to be a top five pick in the draft who maybe higher than four or five. And and you know.
