Isn't it yet dodgeball? Grab life by the bull. It's it's a brilliant film. It's so funny. And again it's it's rooting for the underdogs it's. The. Average Joe's gymnasium. Going against this conglomerate, the Global Gin. And you'll rooting for them from the start and you're thinking. How are they GONNA win this? Battle and oddly enough. We talked earlier about the pro skills competition they implemented last season this dodgeball round which was which is fantastic set to see and actually after watching the film. I know it's a comedy, but I was a bit like I would would've played. dodgeball looks like good fun and I've I've seen roughly a nearby where I live whenever we are able to gain is a dodgeball league and I'm Kinda like I'm up for this. And he's great in this just a very slick operators, the solid casper from top to bottom often. So Significant I. think that when you've got an ensemble piece where there is no a weekly, everybody's just on point, and even if it's just a row with three or four lines, it's Catholic own. "And building on top of books. So I'm curious, really, it's not books actually changing the way people move around cities and helping his understand up planet is any kind of scenario is that you will any trends that you've noticed? Yeah, they're they're two stories. I'd love to share here. So the first one we, we talked a little bit about the micro mobility stays and how you know residents of cities are being inundated with all these new ways of getting around from scooters to e-bikes. Back in July of the small you by company called jump was cleared by a massive sharing company called Uber and people were kind of surprised, right? Like a car company, we felt there was Thomas navigation. Why are they buying a bicycle company? And it turned out that jump and and not box had been working together on sort of a pilot research project in San Francisco. The results of which were that most of the trips that were being taken up in vehicles were less than two and a half miles or so. And on each of these trips river generally lost money. The drivers weren't being paid terribly well because it was such low mileage and people actually could have gotten to their destination faster if they had ridden one of these electric jumped bikes. So this informed Uber's decision to get into an alternative mode of transportation and really become a transportation platform company because they realized that putting somebody in a car is not always going to be the fastest cheapest most efficient way to get them. From pointed at point b on the second example of changing the way people move around cities is working with sidewalk labs, which is which is a division of alphabet Inc. So it sidewalk. Labs does is goes in and create sort of a synthetic model of an entire city. And that means everything from -partment building occupancy to land use and permiting to traffic congestion on every single street at every hour of the day. And what they're trying to do is test a bunch of different scenarios. You know, if I, if I build a digital mixed income housing over here, how does that change residency patterns by at a new highway overpass over here? How does that change? You know, my peak commuting, our traffic and what we've done is give them sort of intimate access to our map data that allows them to run a bunch of different scenarios and then create policy recommendations for cities to say, hey, you should change your traffic, stop stoplight, timing over here, or, hey, you should consider turning this intersection into roundabout because it will improve traffic flow. So whether it is from influencing individual consumer decisions, about what. Oh, dally of transport to take or influencing policy decisions about where to build infrastructure. I do believe that we are changing the way people move through cities, not only that you also complacent strategy humanitarian collaborations. I'm also bring Matt books to government. I could tell me expand on that level as well. Yeah, absolutely. So you can. You can imagine that in the same way that large enterprises want to be able to access location data quickly, visualize their date and location context. This is also true for the government, but some of my favorite stories out of the government stays are actually on the humanitarian side. So one of the projects that I was personally involved in was in the aftermath of the Nepal earthquake, a lot of different Manitoba agencies will landing on the ground in Katmandu and realizing that they couldn't get to the outlying parts of the city because there were literally no Matt's. I mean, there was no data about the roads that would lead you from where you are the places that needed help. So map FOX worked with the open street map community, and specifically the humanitarian open street map team to basically organize a. Nonstop mathathon working with our satellite imagery partners to provide new imagery and basically say, okay, humans, take a look at the satellite imagery trace all the routes you can find. And then we will immediately push those into open street map and math box maps and then deliver them to these humanitarian organizations, the low bandwith environment so that they can start moving physical things to people that need them. I'm so it's that ability to sort of cross the technical and the human divide in order to help people get to where they need to go and make better decisions that I love most about our work in the government humanitarian stays now. Another great story of read about you guys at my boat was it was actually bullying of development sate, and then this sesame to build new tools and platforms to do good in the willed on projects for the World Bank, you know, nice ends. The vet gross, an NGO, another nonprofit humanitarian organization. So can you tell me how that platform evolved and how it quickly became clear that they will the full profit business applications with pursuing as well? Yes, Lutely. And for me to distinction. Wasn't between nonprofit and four profit, but rather between sort of being a consulting company which is how map bucks got started, right. We would take on a project, for example, working with the UN to turn thirty thousand pages of PDF election results from the two thousand nine Afghantistan elections into that that organized that information coherently. We would execute that project from sort of conception all the way through delivery and what we were finding as we did it was that the tools to really work with that location data and turn it into something that was visually comprehensible didn't exist. So in order to complete these projects, we were being paid for us consultants. We had to build new tools and at some point, the tool work just got to be more compelling. You know, projects don't really scale your, you're constantly chasing the next piece of business and when you're done, you're done and and that product doesn't really live on, but the tool piece does, right. You build something, you put it in the hands of one point, two million developers and the reach that you. Can have with it is it's just mind blowing. So not box, split from development seed and decided to focus on building those tools. Now, books also POWs data visualization component of sixty percent of golden as much quadrant vendors. So you talk about how these companies leverage Matt books to serve that customers just shows you how incredibly powerful is yet pretty crazy in this one. This one actually really surprised me. So the first major BI company that we get started working with was IBM cognizant IBM, Watson analytics, and after watching what they were able to do with some of these tools, we've very quickly got traction with the other major players in the states of Tableau Microsoft power, BI micro strategy. Click Domo. I won't go through the entire list. It was really neat to see how in this in this one particular vertical and there's intense feature competition. And also they just recognize that so much of the data they're uses. They're trying to touch has a location. And if they don't give them the tools to visualize it quickly, married up with their other data and and basically derive analysis and make decisions, then they're going to be left behind. And that's really what it's all about in the business intelligence face, right? These applications are designed to help users work with their data, examine it in context and then make decisions. And so the fact that not box maps are fast. We add location and context around the world, and we really let you bake our tools into your application in an intimate way was just a super compelling value proposition for these companies really is. I don't know what what I asked them next question's gonna be is next Matt books. I mean, where of can you go with this? You know, I, it's just fascinating up. Sure. You've, you've still got a long way to go in a lot of missions and a big vision for the future. Yeah, that's right. I'm and for me the sort of edge of the envelope challenges that we're focused on now relate to that first job that I described at the beginning of the conversation, which is. Has to know the world and intimate detail. And here are a really feel like we're just scratching the surface. We owe a lot of credit to companies like Google who showed us what you could do by strapping cameras or other types of sensors onto cars and driving them around the world sort of map things in incredible detail. But what we're trying to figure out is how you do that with help the capital extensive, actually putting humans and cars and driving every mile of road on a on a semi regular basis, and we have some ideas. So one of the things that we just released, it's actually called the vision SDK. One of the challenges in building a very, very accurate map that suitable for navigation is knowing where all of those things are that affect the way you. You drive along the path, whether it's a stop, sign, a no parking sign, a stop light. Markings on the road lane. Markings turn restriction workings at cetera, and is not bucks out about how to get closer to that data. We realized you don't wanna stand, you know, millions of dollars to drive cars around. Can we make this distributed crowd. Outsource problem. So we just did is released an ST k. that allows any application hasn't ignition component. You know, whether it's lift with the driver have in the dashboard or one of these micro mobility applications. As you use the app and the user's looking at a map, the camera of your phone is actually activated to capture images of the world that you're driving through. And then we can actually process using neural nets on the device. Those particular features we care about stop signs stoplights, no parking turn restrictions, and that data flows back into our map so much as are mobilised decay is now being used by millions and millions of people out in the world and sending data back that we used to build a living learning math. This new vision s decay is going to do the same, but but with images that we can learn from. So again, the the challenge for us continues to be, how do we get closer to the surface of the real world and how we baked that. Day into our map is put we as possible. Now people will be listening to us today in one hundred sixty five different countries, and I will be developers, business leaders, startup founders and CEOs, and I'm sure they have their mind blown exactly actress I I of today. So if they want to find out more information wet, can they find you guys online and maybe reach out and contact them if your team, if they've got any questions after listening to our conversation today? Yeah, absolutely. So I would I head over to just not box dot com to get a better sense for what are our who we work with. You can also tweet us at map bucks and they p b, o x. And if anyone would like to reach out to me, it's my last name or when I are w. I n. at meth, ox dot com. From this moment Fullwood everytime pickup more small phone. If I call up a map on any appetite, eleven little slice bile, an avail is Asian or if anybody else looking at a map, he'll be saying, do you know books but seriously, just bake. Thank you for coming on tonight. Shangul stories and. Valuable, the work you're doing and appreciate you showing that story. Thank you. Thanks for the time listening about. They made me realize just how we all take the ability to call up a map and check in on Facebook grubber Nuba or even a tight on Tinder. We take that for granted because Matt books does all that stuff. So developers can focus on building their app and sample into remember that map folks is the foundation for other platforms and enterprises, analyze their data drone companies publish flyovers and even real estate's visuals properties. But he's not all about first world problems of in a cab OMO securing date and checking into Facebook. Matt box was actually born out of a development seed and the necessity to build new tools and platforms to do good in the world for projects, which is the World Bank United Nations. Red Cross NGO another nonprofit humanitarian organisations, familiar personally, great technology, great story. I hope it makes you think the next time you use geo data on an app, but enough of me, Gideon geeky with excitement. Again, why you also and what your takeaways from today's conversation, you know the drill by now.
