Let's go back to reno nevada on independence day. Nineteen ten on the day of the big match. The original fight of the century a white man approached thirty two year. Old jack johnson. Despite johnson's massive frame and fire engine arms. The white man was backed by his buddies. All fanning themselves with their derby hats in the one hundred ten degree heat. The men told johnson that if he even came close to winning the fight that day he wouldn't live to see the sunset johnson just sneered. Johnson the son of former slaves he grew up in galveston. Texas johnson. got his start. In fighting by participating in battle royale 's the fights often held between black boys and young men were organized for the entertainment of high class society. Even then johnson was always the last man standing as an adult. He made mincemeat out of black and white boxers alike on the professional circuit. He wanted the heavyweight championship title. More than anything in the world. But the current champion. Jim jefferies refused to fight him. It had nothing to do with skill and everything to do with skin. Color jeffries believed that. No black man deserved a shot at the title when he retired in nineteen o. Five at the age of thirty jeffries was undefeated. Despite overwhelming resistance in the boxing industry johnson eventually got his shot for the crown on the day. Christmas in nineteen. Oh eight the reigning champion. The announcer introduced jack to a valley of thorny grim white faces but when thirty five year old jeffries was introduced with his retirement. Fat worked down to a sleek new body. The crowd cheered. Although the nation was divided. The arena was not when the bell sounded for the first match. The great white hope was hopeless. Johnson's quick feet and lightning fists. Left jeffries bloody and winded for fifteen rounds. It wasn't a boxing match. It was a slapstick comedy. One that the white crowd did not find funny in the fifteenth round. Johnson flipped a switch and knocked jeffries into the ropes. It was the first fall of jeffries career men in his corner team and i row jumped up and lifted him back to his feet. Still hoping for the white man to deliver what he promised. It didn't last jack. Johnson paste like a panther waiting for jefferies to be cleared by the referee then beat the fallen champ senseless even though no-one cheered jack. Johnson had silenced all doubts. He was the greatest. Johnson's team formed a tight circle around him as they exited the crowd filtered out in silence as if somebody had died. The white fans of jeffries suffered a humiliating defeat. But they weren't about to be humbled instead. They were going to claim their revenge in the streets up next jack. We've taken a trip through history covering Some of the big events that take place over the years on July 4th, But there are just as many memorable events that have taken place on July 4th in the world of sports and let's start in 1910 when the first fight of the century took place. July 4th, Jim Jefferies came out of a six year retirement and put his undefeated record on the line to face Jack Johnson and Reno, Nevada. When asked why he was going to do it, Jeffrey said. I'm going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro. It did not turn out that way. Johnson knocking down Jeffries twice for the first time in his career. Jeffrey's corner man, calling it quits in the 15th round over and Jeffries from being knocked out. Interestingly, nearly 25 years later, another memorable heavyweight made his pro debut on July 4th, 1934. Joe Louis knocked out Jack crack and in the first round, earning $59 starting his ascension to heavyweight champion, which he won in 1937 and held for a dozen years. As indestructible as Joe Louis often seemed during his career. There was no one more seemingly invincible during his playing career than the man known as the Iron Horse. Lou Gehrig. Yankees first baseman had played more than 2000 games in a row until 1939 when he would become ill with Amy, a Tropic lateral sclerosis, a less which would later Become known as Lou Gehrig's disease. There still is no cure for the illness, which provided a melancholy backdrop for Garrick to bid farewell to the fans at Yankee Stadium on July 4th, 1939. But instead of acting downtrodden as I'm sure, you know, Garrett delivered one of the most uplifting and inspirational speeches, anyone Athlete.

This one's called just for man. Yeah. It's not terrible. From this. You know, picture singing it. When you check out the album covers send us shivered on your spine. Then I did see him like doing karate kicks with Mike and. Pinky ring. You see. Hurling your forehead. He could kill a man with that look why? And that's why we're sending him to Russia. Yeah, hired him. That's true. Russians they recruited him. Yeah, you know those things like Kimmel do it. He'll go out into the street and he'll ask people what they thought about Trump's latest speech or something before the speech given or supreme court nominee before they nominate and they'll go, well, I don't like it because he's he's not a good man like before they now or whatever. Don't you think we could do some version of that with his music like, so you love music. So let me play John legend's, latest, whatever, doing a little place. Why. Heap praise on it, and then they find out Steven Beck album. I have to tell us their bona fides. You know what I mean? Like here's what they know. They listen to their heavily into Radiohead and explain to us everything and then we denounce this. Is somebody check out Jack Johnson? Yeah. I gotta get ready and then Seagal Christmas album. Good question. Gate. What's interesting now, his song war leaves a little something to be decided missile toes. Is in your orbital. Christmas, Christmas pitch. Let me kick off my loafers and put my missile toes. Doc ID and merry Christmas. Yeah. It does have mistletoe. Sorry. We got to get to start laying out this Christmas head Stevens ago on. Yeah, he's in Russia coming back. How does it work? How did you guys picture? I'd have no idea, but in Russia. They're gonna love breaking exiting in Russia, but. Oh, yeah. No, you better start translating that case. Transit won't translate right? No, I'll translate the. What do you pay in taxes if you live in Russia? How does that work? How do they get money from from people? And then I'm announcing. I'm assuming that if you're seems all like I like to make money, but I don't wanna pay taxes and Puno give you by Trump apartment in one of his hotels, and that's how you don't have to pay like Milo might how taxes working dual citizens. Really, I'm not a dual citizen green card interest. Are you? Are you? I am illegal alien. I'm sorry. I'm Elise. Strolling past. I don't know works. So how'd you like every other American you just by. Trump hotel. If you live in California but you spend three hundred whatever eighty seven days or whatever. What. Right, right. In in in Texas, then you'll pay Texas taxes. You have you spent more time here. They'll want to know where you're spending more to them. So I'm guessing worker. Here's where you get paid to what America will will off-balance whatever you pay taxes somewhere else. Right. So if you're paying taxes in London for work or whatever, then then you just gotta let America know and then they'll prorate, they'll prorate that. I'm just wondering if Stevens pain is fair share. That's all that's all mask and. Or accounts smelling off shore counts, how does it work? Yeah, I love speaking off shore. What's that movie out that deadly? No exiting. Battleship under stage. Yeah, yeah, there is one. There are so many movies. Siege will. That's why I say it doesn't say. There's a love story and under siege. Cakes, maybe man here. It's two thousand seventeen. He released his seven, all the light above it too. And in this episode, Jack Johnson breaks down one of the songs from that album. It's about parenting politics and the ocean. It's called, you can't control it. And. This fast, though, show. I'm Jack Johnson and happy to be here. This song is started from a little jam that my good friends at kill zaken. I'd made he's got this little space in his garage. We go on there sometimes and just jammer. I'll make noises and stuff. And this one day I jumped on the drums. He started playing on the keys. And then I added a little bass part to it. Zack. We're like brothers, he was born on the same day same year everything. We've been friends since we're eighteen. We would get together and stay up all night and like get a four track out right down ideas and then try to sing. And I learned a lot from that. He was the first person ever met where you know, I felt that comfort to share lyrics with in those kind of things. I love playing the drums probably my favorite Schmidt, the play, but I'm pretty limited in my drumbeats, but it's just so meditative to sit there and get into a groove. So we're just goofing around and I think it was time for dinner and don't forget that idea is put it down. Yeah, he sent it to me like a month later. Like remember this jab thing. Awesome. Nice. So when I started making the record played it for my friend, Ravi, that was helped me produce Rubbi lacquers and he dug the groove. But the first thing, the Ravi seven, I played it to him was like us. Cool, but we get rid of those nineties drums sounds like every nineties hit right there. And I was like, no way like James Brown funky drummer beat. Not at all. He was more of the Wonderwall B. And so anyways, I was like, all right, what arousal offended, but not that much. So when we started, I went with across thick on the snare. And instead of trying to use my foot which is pretty clumsy. I just took the mallet and hit the kick drum with hand just started with the boom, boom, boom, boom. So then I would go with the high hat and it was nice because I could use two hands on it and. Do all these things that I can't do. If I'm sitting behind the drums, we just kept layer in. And then we were kind of both thinking it needs a little more like ambiance, a little more theory kind of feel. We had this old school tape, machine, Ravi, passionate and through the tape. As soon as it came through that machine so is like all record. That sounds so cool. And then he started doing those another call. We kind of throw it. Every time on this narrative cranking enough and like throwing it. Guitar part was the next part I added on. I played so much alone that I used to try to fill out of the space with Mike ATar on tracks all on the acoustic guitar. And so that's been kind of something nice over the years is just starting to realize guitar doesn't need to be on everything. I'm pulled out a little bit. So this is cool because it didn't have any kind of rhythm guitar check. I like the way, acoustic grounds, you know, and then the electric is that one that has an ISIS stain. It's
