"It is boomer and geo on fan across the country on CBS sports network, and joining us right now, the number one overall pick in this past Friday's NHL draft to the New Jersey Devils, that is Jack Hughes, Jack. Good morning. Thanks for being here. How are you? So you still this attention. Or what is this a lot for you? You pretty good at dealing with it. I think it comes along. I think it's a all really exciting and I mean not as possible without hockey. So I mean, that's where it all starts from. I think this is all really exciting. Now. When you're eighteen years old, you don't realize that you're eighteen years old. This is the advice I can give you because you're like eighteen accomplished. All this look on the number one overall pick and you this is all you know, but when I injury and I look at you were like, wow, you got this. You got a bunch of people following you around. You're going everywhere. We got the jersey here on TV there's going to be pressure. People are already talking about rivalry between you and Campo Cocco. All this happens. Boom, you're right there. But you seem like this is it, this is fine. I'm good. Did you learn to deal with these things? Where where does that come from that calmness? Well, I think for me, I'm kinda living dream so farming this is. I mean what else do you want you get drafted by any team? You're kinda live in the good life. So I mean for me. It's all awesome. I think I'm confident can I'm trying to enjoy this enjoy every moment with you. Don't just get drafted the number one pick and I know you're a hockey family from what I read like even your mom played right? And your dad you brothers in the league or at least was drafted your younger brother plays. Well how about growing up in a family like that? How did they split the kids, what games you're going to you? Guys, must've been all over the place ios and saying, I mean, thankfully, we had a lot of lot of other families. Help us out for a lot of years, especially with my dad coaching pro hockey. So he was he was on the road a lot, too. So I mean I mom and dad always run us around the spots. Spy me, I can remember them bringing my little brother game pretending like they're at the game. And they weren't even there. I mean, just tell them just because they're so busy with us too short. I mean they're on believable grownup. Those who was always really busy. Always a lot of fun to, to have the three of us going, how many games a year, would you say you played, you know, I don't mean last year. I mean when you in the middle of the youth, hockey and your brother's still playing youth hockey were you guys playing fifty sixty games a year. More or less more than that. I mean, more than eighty probably we're really young like twelve thirteen play more than more than five Turney so probably ninety. And then on top of that spring hockey, I can remember my daddy was coaching all three of us and spring hockey's. I mean he he coach twenty one twenty one games and probably three or four days, just with the three of us Oba we were always really busy talking to Jackie is on the fancy BS sports network. The number one overall pick in the NHL draft to the New Jersey Devils. Now, already people are saying rivalry. Between you cap. Oh, Cocco, obviously, you've got the devils and the Rangers, and it's sort of perfect one, too. I mean, do you look at it as a rivalry or is that something that other people are sort of drumming up? I mean obviously, it's really unique to have the, the first and second pick in the same area if the devils in him with the ranger, so I think that's a pretty unique in itself. But I mean for me. I don't think it's much over. Every obviously, the media will make it out to ban. I'm sure over the next couple of years, it'll intensified a little bit with the devils and Rangers trying to heat up and get really to teams here. So I mean, that would be a lot of fun. A Tele range arrival was kinda heated up again and it will be your first game. It's not gonna take you long to realize you've gotta rivalry because of the one thing you'll learn about first of all garden is in incredible place to play. And you'll see that the minute you skate in that place for the first time, but the rock is tremendous to it is a great building for hockey. I love. Oh on. There we go. We try to go to six seventy games a year and you get fans from everywhere when the Rangers come in, it's the screaming the yelling you'll notice from the moment you're on the ice. So you might be a tell yourself, there's no rivalry just me play them. You'll realize you're right in the middle of it. It's pretty cool. It really is a great area to play hockey and especially with the islanders. They're on the now. So you should have a lot of fun. Are there any guys in the devils that, you know, or you walk into this blind knowing? No, I know Taylor hall, little bit and training with them. I know course neither from world championships. The men's, he was us awesome with me. And then I know Mike, McLeod a little bit who's been up and down ause back. So I know those ties Smith. First round pick from lash, also, I know it's a, a really exciting group in its team. That's right on right on the Bank, I think, PK sue ban, right? Yeah. Pretty exciting. That's pretty neat right? Reading about you is that you're looked upon as a leader when you're on the ice, very vocal. And you try to take take charge as an eighteen year old can you do that? I think in certain scenarios, for sure. But I mean, I'm I'm going to be eighteen year old wanna step on anyone's toes. But I mean, I'm confident kid. I wanna I wanna be a kid that was kind of drives the bus doesn't just a be a passenger lay expect an older guy do something I want to be a qigong team like that. And I think that's, that's what makes us go to him. I wanna be a full hands on deck and ready to go. Talking to Jack is on the fancy Bs sports network, who'd you wanna be when you were growing up, what was the hockey player that was the person that you were emulating? Is that guy still in the league right? I mean you go through phases. But the guy that was pretty constant was Patty Cain. Yeah. That's a, that's a guy wanted to play like immunities. So fun to watch really exciting player. So I mean, have you had have you had a chance to meet him yet. Yeah. Yeah. I got an own pretty well actually from the men's worlds. Yeah. So he was awesome. With me took out the Danner saps. I'm in the locker room. So he's a really, really good. How do you balance like the I'm one of these guys. But I'm also still on my way up to one of those. Like you have to think about like, all right? My goal is to be Patrick Kane, and I wanna be that. And a lot of people think I can be that, but I'm not there yet. So I have to act accordingly. That's got to be a little bit of a tough balance Phy, with expectations on you. Yeah. I think the draft is a really good stepping stone. I mean, it's something my whole life. I've worked up to but I mean it comes and goes now it's back to the work. I gotta. Have a really good summer song, how really good year next year. I mean obviously going first overall great, but it doesn't buy you, anything doesn't guarantee you anything. So there's going to be a lot of work left to do. And I'm really excited for the challenge. Did you know the devils, we're taking you or did you think a high been them or New York? I mean. I was I was confident that it'd be the devils, but the management tip their handed also we're going in blind soa when I find found out, it was them really exciting. It was Brodeur to called your name, right. Yeah. Yeah. So do you do you get a call just prior to that, or it's when he goes up to the podium in calls your name? That's the first time you hear that's the first time. I mean my agent was trying to figure something out. See see what was going on. But him I think like a lot of people we ideas either me or Kako, and I'm once they called my name is just. I was so happy and so, so pumped up to be devil. Cool. I'm probably relieved that it's over two. Now, you kind of move onto the next phase, which you knew was coming. Anyway. Yeah. I think so. Many emotions fall into that moment. You just you're so fired up. And once you hear name called it's you're, you're just really excited to go to the organization. Is it? It's interesting because I on Williamson went number one last week to the palace everybody. There brother grandmother, dead people knew he was going to be number one of the pelicans, you had an idea that you might go. One is it? I guess the question I wonder is he was over over one with a motion is then real I mean, because, you know, you're going to be the one or the two pick, right? Yeah. I think it's I think, has was so genuine. I think it was awesome, awesome for the sport because it kinda shows how you work, your whole life for that moment. And guy like that he knows. It's coming. You still see them ocean out of it. So I mean for me person, I knew I know is going to be. Either levels the Rangers. I mean still just a such a Joyce moment. And the I mean you dream that your whole life. You can't put it into words happens talking to Jackie on the fan. CBS sports. Our just got a very cool note. So Jack's grandfather was a new York Fire Department battalion chief. So you've got some New York roots in the family gets he loves it. He's, he's been falling for a lot of years now. So he's really excited with the dells. Now, I know you talk about your, your confidence, and how you were sort of this. Everything is part of this deal and you're prepared for it. Is there anything that you're nervous about when you start this journey? Is there one thing you think about like, man, I just need to? That's the one thing I'm a little bit concerned about. No. I mean I'm not oblivious to the fact that I'm going to be playing in the NHL next year. I mean it's the it's the best league in the world for reason. So I know it's gonna happen. I know it's gonna be a challenge. I know it's going to be a little difficult. But I'm really excited for that. The competitive part of me is really pumped up to plan, the NHL you obviously have excelled at every level you've played it. How much harder do you expect it to be, how much of an adjustment period? You thinking to give yourself. Yeah. It's, it's the best league in the world on with the best players in the world. I think I I got a little bit of a taste for the men's worlds, but on, I mean, the NHL hold different animals. So I I'm really excited. I one of the big summer so I can kinda come in their contribute right off the bat. When you win your first MVP don't get too big for us. We're going to have to have you on the show. All right. Sounds good. Guys watching him. Thank you, Jack. Use of the New Jersey Devils the number one overall pick best of luck. Jack..

"Impressive results terms of gravitating or elevating to the NHL level, eventually. The grassroots level and, you know, our, our American development model the ATM tremendous job. My brother, for instance, if he'll story is a he was a division three hockey player, but he's an attorney back home, and when he goes to practice for my nephew's team you ate, all he does is. The website and prints out a skill practice from the website. They study it for twenty minutes in the other coaches, they go out there. They run it the kids have a blast and they get better. But the day DM has taken a lot of thinking out of the out of, you know, the jobs, the hands of, of, of everyday coaches and given them a template for what player you ten player needs to succeed. And I think we're starting to see that you know, kind of rise up through the ranks and you know with, with, with players and coaches rising up from ten fourteen and things like that. There was such an emphasis on skill development, personal development at those young ages that now coaches are starting to enhance their their arsenal at as you know, getting more creative with the ADM as a template, and then we, we see a better player here at the program as far as what you know what we're doing here. It's, you know, I it's, it's very intricate piece there's Friday and Saturday night. And we're not as concerned about the outcome of games. Whereas a lot of other teams are really, really concerned about making sure he played, you know. Percentage, hockey and everything else. And, and while we value winning, you know, our, our number one attribute in what our focus is. You know, since I've been back in the program is to enhance speed power creativity. You know, really those three things on every single day in practice. And if you concentrate every drill, you're doing to make sure that you're enhancing, those, those characteristics, you're gonna have you're gonna have a pretty good product at the end. When you start to blend that, that grassroots program with a bunch of competitive kids, I wanted to ask you about some players for let you go, and of, of note, guys that, you know, maybe there for the sabres at seven, so I'm not gonna ask you about Jack Hughes. I, I don't think I'm going to ask you about Alex Turcott because it sounds like he's not going to be there. So let's start with Trevor is is it Ziegler Zubrus Trevor? You know, I think I think that, you know, we're ever Trevor end up the fan base is gonna is gonna love this kid. He's going to bring him out of their seats. And you know he makes he makes these impossible plays things that other really, really high end players can't even fathom. Can't even conjure equals don't execute some and makes them look. So he's, he's out there running spinner, Emma passes. No look, his, his saucer game his ability to navigate the, the half court and on the power play. I've never seen anything like it. He's, he's the best that I've ever seen at this age. That includes that includes Jack us is he is an absolute magician. I at half court offense. And I think you know, he's he's grown at tone in his two hundred foot game two of these key kid who was a little little apprehensive. I would even go say soft skill when he first came to the program, and he took off and flourished under the end of the competition that, that they're that they're. Thrust into and what you're going to have the two hundred foot player who's an absolute magician on the power play. He ends up in buffalo. I lied. It's only two guys the other guy for sure is called Caufield in John..

"Think that I mean there's a little bit of buzz last year after the challenge by mean, there's so much work to be done. I mean, a lot of things can still change over two weeks draft. So I mean, I think that you Scott. You have taken with a grain of salt and be humbled. Still. I mean it's been a long couple years with the draft comments. And now it's finally here it's, it's really funny to kind of see where you've come. And you were there last year when your brother Quinn was picked number seven overall by Vancouver. What was that whole experience? Like for you sitting with the family and watching Quinn get drafted as awesome sequins dream come true. I know Israel excited to go to Vancouver and. There was an awesome time for me and my family just to just to see see where he went and all hardware kind of came into fruition there. So's it was a really special day for us. You had the chance to learn from a number of NHL stars at the world championships. Patrick Kane among others. What did you learn from some of those guys? It's just unbelievable. I mean obviously on the ice, I learned some Benji into work on took away, a lot of things, I think the, the best things I learn how to be a prone daily basis. I mean bear on guys like that high end players high end people. So I think that's benefited me and the most Mahatma up next year. Joy the game tonight here and say Louis we'll see you in the NHL. Thanks Kenny, Steve back to you. Thanks very much, Jack Hughes, who will likely become a New Jersey, devil is the number one pick in the two thousand nine hundred thousand H L draft. You can see it watch the draft on NBC.

"You're not going to try and make it in the shell fifty. The show on some special vitamins. So it's it's no guarantee. Jack Hughes will be great. He probably will. You know, just like no guarantee Villareal ever playing a game mill. But if you take a guy like let's say look at Vancouver with Pederson he came in and was not the number one overall pick and he lit up league this year and is probably gonna win rookie of the year. That's that's the type of player that you're getting. Probably with the fifth pick. You're getting a player of that. Is he going to have that breakout? Season is going to turn heads like that nobody knows. But you're getting that type of player which I think is is game changing for the kings at this point because that's what they need. They don't have a game changer. You've got veterans. You've got your copay tars Doughty's, your quicks, your Brown players like that who have been around and seen at all. But you need someone who's going to elevate those players to play at a higher level, which is what the kings have been missing for the last several probably two or three seasons. They've got players who can play the game. But if you can inject that youth into the game if you can inject those high end players younger players your team is going to be so much better. And those players are going to have to raise their games to a whole different level. And that goes back to, you know, the Lombardi deals. Because you're right last two or three years we haven't had that hot prospect, right? And the ones we do have are playing like for us. Now, go back to two thousand twelve when when when to fully came in and when Dwight king came in when Jordan Nolan came in and Pearson came with fourteen when Pearson came in all these guys were brought up for a reason they got a little bit of seasoning in the American Hockey League. And then boom they brought up at the right time by dean Lombardi they got injected into the lineup. And it is exactly what the kings needed at that time. They haven't had that in several years. They haven't had that one player who's kind of had that breakout season or or has elevated other players to play a better game. That's what I think has been missing. You've got guys who are comfortable they're comfortable living in the south bay. They're comfortable going on the training center. Comfortable playing games at Staples Center. But that's where it kinda tops off. There's no extra. There's no extra. Injection of this youth or talent which hey Tyler to fully scored twenty five thirty goals this year. Right. Where was that? And not knocking him. It's a bunch of guys like at a decent year..

"Your home for both the avalanche and Denver Nuggets in the postseason man that feels good to say it extra sports thirteen hundred Avs inflames coming up on Thursday. There's a little bit of business tonight to take care of though. As far as the avalanche are concerned. They will get the Ottawa Senators pick no matter where it falls in this draft lottery as being held tonight. And it could be number one. They actually have the highest odds of any team in its believe the third time in the past handful years that the apps have had the highest odds of getting the first pick overall joining us now to talk about what that prize may be for the absence. They get the number one pick is the founder of draft the draft analyst dot com. He also contributes to the. Sporting news. Steve Cornelio joins me. Now. Steve great Taviani today. How are you? How you doing today? I'm doing great. So obviously people want to know who is Jack Hewson how good is he? I would say he's a a little bit of Nathan MacKinnon and a little bit of convict David not very big American born because he plays for the national team development program, which is based out of Michigan. I'm about five ten bucks. Seventy so measurements to Patrick. Kane. Had stripped back seven archers place Senator. Top line set a dynamic speed outstanding playmaker vision. I like I said when you watch him play he had like that sixth sense. There's a little bit of Crosby in a little bit of mcdavid things going to become that type of player. But he definitely a guy that has the potential to be a cornerstone, hyper play. I don't know if it's gonna be generational. I don't know if he's going to be sending all types of records and such. But I do think that he is going to be the kind of Senate out of build around. So very highly touted he's been touted pretty highly for a while. Now, he's been a consensus number one hour about three years but nine hundred finish to capital Kako coming onto the team his fantastic season. So create a little bit of a rivalry between the two. And now, you know, we're hearing that it might not be guaranteed that here's what go number one goes who picks this. So but still plan a great great to watch play. Why would Jack Hughes not go number one pro readiness or position or? Patrick. Seventy when he wanted to call back in. He was a wing of the hawks were necessarily in establish point that kind of gave him the keys to the castle. Do it worked out for them? The games in the last couple of years detract picks getting spoiled that plays in the league getting smaller hit any pretty nowadays. So I don't think it's an issue of physical guy out in Chicago. What score the guys five seven. So again, I don't I don't think it's a physical maturity thing if anything would be, you know, maybe his can't might be a little bit cautious about him. Maybe they wanted to spend a four year college or wherever. But you know, I think that that the biggest thing is really what capital is done that you're talking about a big six two hundred ninety pound winger without getting shot. You know plays a similar game to go Rantanen. You know what I mean? So I think it's more of an issue. Like, you know, I it is it really isn't environment. What are you gonna be able to contribute the NHL level? And it goes back to the fact that his speed has dynamism ability to create open for himself and his linemates. Biggest sport you watch that. Any level? Steve Kerr Ninos. Joining us here on drive time sports, founder of the draft analyst dot com, also contributes to the sporting news. So would you say that at the very least those two guys if you get one or you get to you're going to end up with the terrific player. What about if you end up with three or maybe even four like the Avs a couple years ago dealt with when they had the best odds and ended up with four how deep it. How good is this draft outside of a huge in Kako. It's excellent. And for one reason, and one means an oldie are Senator you have about seven sentiment to pay. You got three kids out of the whol guy. You got we'll wake shell rights. Show, alex. You have about eight guy six or seven guys who have franchise attentional as number one centers in the NHL different in the problem is that they're all different in that it it's what you're looking for. You'll get a finance guy. A playmaker like match boys out with you have that insurance. We something is going to be the fourth third or fourth overall pick you looking for in your face power photograph. Another guy. The ranking really vary. But I think that if you're picking in that top ten eleven twelve. Not only have although senators have the outstanding wingers. Kohl's in is just a brutal kit to play against. Two hundred foot forward. You'll a really strong defense. The dish. Plus top. Whol? Cross between Chris Pronger and Ryan. Very complete player me too, aggressive style. But it could also quarterback a power play. Whol? So I, you know, once you get past us and Kaplan the orbiting wants to or to you want to look at it. Then it really all depends on what that team's internal drip was look looks like what they consider to be best player. Available different definition of that. So it's gonna be interesting by picking in the top ten to walk away with the franchise Calva player. Is it is it too early to? Re analyze or redraft the draft here with kale McCarthy because we're getting ready to perhaps see him depending on when you masses season. And do you think that if we were having that draft again today that maybe kill Macara would be the number one? And number two guy off the board instead of four. Depends thing is you know, Pederson twenty. Pretty dominant force of any I on top of that you'll be able hyphen in. We take one spot ahead of cargo fantastic rookies. And so I think chemical is going to be dominant player. Absolutely, especially surrounded with the with the orient Colorado right now. To situation we have by five seven years down the road. I don't think any of us going to be talking about where they were pick. It's going to be a matter of what they've done for dictate. What resumes? Look like are. They all stars and things like that. You know, when you look at that track was week top to bottom, but the top ten I was outstanding. And we're seeing that right now with how you know the thing about. Right down Quint us what he's done with the connection. Just a few games. I think we're close veteran. College was a year older than you know, again, we just have to wait and patient. But when he gets to watch do you think he can make an impact in this series with the flames if the Avs do choose to put him on the roster. Before. In previous years. Go back to the eighties. Where teams usually down to series. They'll go on. Things up. But you know, sometimes it's a good thing. You just throw it into the fire, and I get the butterflies out. I think that's what the ads wanna do. They build up prepare him for it. When you look at his style. How powerful got tremendous jot tastic skate of your thinking about college hockey's. Pretty big boys like twenty three twenty four years old. So it's not like he was playing against the seventeenth. So it will be a course of action. I wouldn't disagree with you have serious goals. And they think they need a spot. I be surprised. Well, it's going to be very interesting off season. We'll play postseason an offseason for the Avs because they'll they'll have a high pick. We know that we just don't know where they'll end up until tonight, then the flame series coming up camel car where they do with him. Very exciting stuff going on with the Avs. And if you're going to get into the draft this summer, you gotta give Steve Afonso at the draft analyst find him at the draft analyst dot com, and in the sporting news, Steve this is one of many visit scientists the two of us having. So appreciate you joining me, and I look forward to the next time. We get chat. Good luck tonight. Thank you very much Steve predate it. I I still I I hear what Steve is saying. And I'm like, okay. That's. That's good to know. Because remember when the as dropped to four couple years ago. I lost it. I was like I was distraught. And now it looks like camel car might be the best. I know the the kid that he mentioned a pit or sin is from Vancouver. Right. So he's he's pretty good. And then obviously his skin that went to Dallas is was kind of the guy that I was looking at and they abstain real weren't imposition draft either one of them, and then and he's year went number one that year right because it's stupid devils cut the number one pick. And then they got the MVP. So. Look hindsight. Twenty twenty. They absolutely get hurt at all by falling to four. And you hear Steve saying they're not gonna get hurt. If they fall the foregin this year, but Jack Hughes has been the guy for as he said three years now. So. I don't care who else is in the draft that that's the guy that I want. That's who I want. They add to get this kid out of Finland might be the real deal and everything like that. But it's been I mean, it's like maybe he doesn't turn out to be like one of these guys, but he has like Austin Matthews. Maybe just short of Sidney Crosby type hype. I mean, this guy has been the second coming for a few years now. So that's the guy I want. So if they had fall to even to I will be disappointed. One other no, Avs as I mentioned twice have had the odds of for the number one pick in the last handful of years twenty thirteen they actually had the second. Best odds got I drafted Nathan MacKinnon instead of Jones, which was another one that disappointed. Why ask fans because obviously set Jones's a defenseman and set Jones has the Colorado ties, but that turned out. Okay. And then twenty seventeen the draft. We're just talking about favored to get the number one pick drop to fourth in ends up with Campbell car who may see this weekend. I remember I remember that year with with Jones he was all the hype until the prospect game and he played in the prospect game. And it was like, whoa. Slowdown on this guy, right onset Jones. You're saying. Yeah. So so he was the number one pick. And then all of a sudden people saw him. What he really was. Right. It was like. And it turned out to be right because he hasn't really done much know h l career still solid men. But certainly not a guy that is, you know, Jamie, and I would say for you don't be upset if they Lynn too. Philanthropy or later, bright one or two your great. Are you are you on this finish kid to? Yes. Okay. Absolutely. 'cause I'm in playing catch up with him emphasize, even I if if you get number two number one could take him, and you have to sometimes it is better to be number two. Right. Because we all one of the most famous instances in in recent times that we remember is blazers Sonics win one to blazers ended up with Odin that allowed the Sonics to get Kevin Durant. So there's been many cases of that. But it's just like it's been Jack Hughes has been the prize. And now we're hearing of this finished kid, and it's like now Jackie. So I that will have incorrectly. Peyton Manning was too. That is true. That was another hotly contested that turned out that the number two pick was better. No. He was number one..

"What's up? Yeah. It's been a regular thing here for I don't know. Six years. Mike is always in DisneyWorld. You're always here. And I'm always here are saying trades. Go much past the three o'clock deadline. So stay with us. Brian Wilson here. Jodi, Kyle Powell we've got the whole team here ready, right trades, a common and some big ones actually just went down within the last twenty minutes. Right. Mark stone is the was the big shoe to drop and it dropped and he's on his way to Las Vegas. And I think Ottawa for all the jokes. You can make about them. And there's plenty of reason to do that they've traded away you go back to last summer. They've Carlson Zingel Duchenne who they paid a first round pick. That could be Jack Hughes for just last year and now stone so there are three leading scorers this year. And of course, Carlson last summer. All gone, but I did pretty well. As about as good as you could expect they got a guy that everybody on the TSN panel here is raven about in Branson who's an a plus defensemen prospect. So I think that's good. But holy cow. Like the decks have been cleared in Ottawa in stone. They're already talking about a huge extension in Vegas for him. We have not heard that the sabres are done. We don't really know anything past the Brandon menteur deal that was announced yesterday. Teams do announce that they are done in Ottawa has done that. So the Ottawa sun. Edmonson has done that there's a tweet here from Chris Cooper who is a writer from Washington who says Andre Borakove ski still with the capitals. That's the guy that maybe could have been target rating Wilson's got are done board up Washington, Edmund Detroit Arezzo, and the Rangers have announced that they are done the sabers could still possibly make some sort of move. We don't know what you know. There's a million of possibilities. How about starting on Brandon menteur? I love it. I love it. I mean, I know I've heard you for I don't know two years longer. He's just the guy who name I remembered when I it looks good. He's young he's cheapie fits, although, you know, going all the way back to Tim Murray looking for help for the blue line going back. I mean, this would be like trade deadline's three years ago Anaheim Cam Fowler. And then you had this group of young guys that we're all coming Manson menteur Lindholm Shaef the door. They were just stacked with guys. And there was no way they were really going to move forward with all of them. I'm mildly surprised that they still willing to divest themselves of Montour at this point considering that they already lost Teodor. And that they made the trade who did they give up to New Jersey to get to Adam Henrique forget now. But that was another one of those defensemen that they swapped. Out that was Sammy. Right. So they they had they had all these like twenty two ish year old guys that all mostly projected pretty positively menteur among them. So I I mean, I've had sabre fan thinking about Anaheim and thinking about their defense men, and it was for a while. Just give me one of those guys. You know, we talked to Travis Llosa he'd be raving about three or four different defensive in their menteur among them. Okay. Fine. Find a way to break that logjam. They're not gonna keep all those guys. Well, it took a little longer than expected. I sort of given up the idea that one of those guys would be available, but menteur I think is. It's a nice player to add to the way that this team wants to play. So I'm really pumped about it. Because it's not a it's not a helped me out right now. Although I think you'll help right away. But he's a long range player. He's like to me a new member of the core of the team looks like Wayne Simmons to Nashville according to several including Pierre. Lebron and John Shannon has tweeted that there is a backlog a jam up of deals waiting to be finalized deal that could be in the works is Boston and New Jersey have a deal, and that's from Marc Savard. Okay. And wondering if it's round Marcus Johansson, okay? Maybe fair enough. They were looking for a second round pick for him. That was one of the reported prices back to menteur. I I like it for a couple of reasons last week was be mad at the sabres week. I was very upset from them because I keep hearing about a vision. I keep hearing about the plan, and yet I didn't feel like I had any pieces that I could actually point to Jason botulin. Say these are his pieces he inherited a lot of what's left inherited risk the line and an Eichel and leans lottery pick. So this menteur deal is finally a piece I can slot in and say, here's their vision. Here's what he and Housley wanna build and we'll see where it goes from here. But okay young defenseman that's gonna turn you from defense to offense and get this thing. Moving know Housley got the job we've talked about how he wants his his his backs to play some hockey players start using that term the backs, but to get the defense active in Montour is the guy that you know, I I've I've gone down the list of every single possible mobile puck moving defenseman from hey, Tori, crew to an offer sheet. I every single name that's possible. I've wanted to add to the blue line here. And finally, someone gets added to it. So you know to add menteur and Darlene in less than a calendar year. I realized that in both cases the conversation comes up about risk the line. And I'm not upset that he's still on this team today. But we kind of have a situation. Where we can actually start to think do they have enough on defense to move him somewhere else and get something in return. So it's today for me, even if it's only Montour, and that's the only deal today was about team building and buyer seller is always I was always about builder builder today. Yeah. I'm with that one hundred percent. I mean, I I didn't the state could have come and gone and other years it's gone this way where like really nothing of significance. Either way happens. You know last year we were in here underwhelmed by the vendor canes trade the year before that was the first time. I remember being let down by Tim Murray. One of these swot beats usually he comes out, and he's the guy with the he's got a lamp shade on. He's he's ready to go as the story the party, right? Good or bad. Like, he's he's doing stuff you pay attention to him in two years ago. There was nothing. So yeah, I like I like the move for now and for the future. And I think it almost undeniably. Tells you that something has to happen back there. As far as the trade goes. I mean, they've got they had a lot of guys that are capable of playing in the NHL. They're not all established to meet the fence. But unless you think Casey Nelson is already that. I mean, I think he can play should play. I'm sort of counting on him playing. But he's not really established to he's going to be in the league. But I think he can play for you. But I mean, you start counting up the guys that are under contract for next year. And you've got more than you can put on the ice. Then you consider what you're gonna do with Jake McCabe, who's a restricted free agent. I would think he figures in your plans boil you is also a restricted free agent. So you mean, you have his rights if you don't trade him away, and you can do something with him or walk away from him. But you've got eight nine ten guys now with menteur here that are under contract or you have their their rights as RFA's again if there's not another move right now happening. You almost have to do something in the summer. I think and I think you can do something big in the summer if you want to and that almost definitively is wrist, align crystalline, and it ends up feeling a lot like a Riley last year where at the deadline. They were fielding offers. It was one of those. It's clear we have to change some things, and they feel that offers at the deadline. It didn't happen. And then in the off season it did. So maybe rest aligning gets to that spot. Maybe once the sabers know where they're drafting or spin another one of those picks for something else. It can be opened up a bit. We have transitioned to deals. Definitely come after the deadline right down to now. The penguins do have a move in the central registry. Okay. So we know that we're waiting on. Right, right. And just said that there's a log jam in the laundry. And now teams are declaring we're in the logjam or telling people penguins are in the logjam Michael Dell's Oto does does go into the sky a couple of other things the flyers have acquired Hartman and a pick part of the Wayne Simmons deal, and then apparently the av for Mark stone has been converted nine point five mill. Okay. Eight years nine and a half. Yeah. For what Jeff Skinner is gonna make Marcus Johansson is that devils Bruins deal right on Columbus confirms that they're done Panara and Bobrovsky stay Columbus is a conversation to have a is impossible to admire what they did. And also be willing to maybe admit that. It's not the smartest thing. But you yes, yes. I think I think you should try to find room for both things because they have never won. They've got good players that division is still kind of up for grabs as far as I'm concerned mostly because I don't believe in the islanders that much. They can be taken down in the playoffs. Here is going gonna make the playoffs. But I just don't think that they're a team that you know, it's not like Pittsburgh in their glory days at the top of the division. So you can move move on in that in that side of the playoffs. If you're there. That's where Columbus ends up. I mean, it's still determine where they're gonna end up right because they could end up coming over to play Tampa. If they end up low enough or they could miss car or they could miss could mess. They sure I think you know, it almost always is the safe thing to do to try to turn those guys into assets. If you know they're leaving. And I would have respected them doing that. But I admire them saying screw it. We've never won anything here. And let's let's add and try to go for it. They only have if I'm not mistaken Britain, you might know this a third and a seventh left in this year's draft. So basically giving away a whole draft class to say let's win. In a playoff series a series. They haven't won playoff series. And I think I'll probably end up rooting for Columbus to make it and to do well not at the sabers expense. But I wouldn't mind to see a little bit of bold GM and get rewarded right? Have other teams at the deadline say you know, what? Fine. We'll give away our second fourth fifth, sixth seventh. And I of course. But there are there are also plenty of GM's. Maybe this is a testament to this year's draft class. There are years where first round picks do not move. And this is a here..

"Or my Twitter feed. Is they call them world juniors begin next week? Kevin love hockey into the world juniors. Abberley spend time watching it. Oh, well, the reason why I like watching them is because you get to see the future stars of the NHL. So some of these kids that you see in that shine really in the world juniors. They wind up being like the top picks in the NHL draft. And then they're wind up being the stars of the future and the kid that you have to look out for who's going to be playing for the United States. This go round. Here is Jack Hughes. Jack Hughes is going to be the number one overall pick in the two thousand nineteen draft. This kid is like Austin Matthews level good. So that's that's something you have to watch. But yeah, I mean, there are a lot of these talented players that played in the world juniors. We saw some of them in the Olympics this Pasco around because the NHL didn't. You know, the NHL didn't have Olympic participation last year. So we saw some of those young kids that shined the US for the US in the world juniors play for the US men in the Olympics, but get into it. Sometimes can I ask you a question real quick on that? Sure. What do you see as far as the talent goes on the juniors? Are you looking at a few players that kind of stand out above the rest, or is it kind of more of an even LeBron played field. No. What is that? What I'm looking at the sea who's going to be the stars of? Yeah. The guys that the players that stand out, you know, who they are. So like, for example in last year's or in this past years under eighteen event. Jack Hughes scored five goals and seven assists in just seven games. Like he stands out Austin Matthews in one year for the US junior team put up like a hundred and twenty points. So if the guy's clearly separate themselves, right? Whether it's the Jack, I polls that you see, you know, playing now or in the NHL our. What's his face from the from the the Bruins? Charlie mcevoy. Right. You know, some of the kids that you see shining college for the college hockey that. That's it's obvious. You can tell who the top players are. Right. And then the broadcast is smart, you know, in the NHL network does these broadcasts. You'll Jeremy Roenick will be gushing over a player. And then you're like, I guess I got to pay attention to that guy. Oh, definitely definitely watch. It maybe not so much in the group stage because some of the scores get a little outrageous. Like, it's not like every game to one or three two. They're like eight one the US will win a game. Canada will Canada will be the team eleven to two. And then you get to the the real elimination round where it's US Canada Russia Sweden. And then you go right now, this is the real competition. US lost. The it was in buffalo last year. Canada won. It's in Vancouver this year, but two years ago was when the US one in Canada, and that was a big deal. That was a big deal for the US to win that was twenty seventeen USB Canada in the finals. Fun of it. Definitely a fun event. I highly recommend you watching. I think it starts on the day after Christmas. I believe starts the day after Christmas, and then goes until like mid way through. Midway through January and that US Canada. That was a shootout that one. That was. Academia, performance, Colin white was one of the top players for the US. And I think now he is on the senators. So all these guys will be in the NHL to watch absolutely fun to watch eight five five three two three four NBC's eight five five three two three four six to two. I can't really focus in on the NHL though until. Until until the new year hits. Like once the football playoffs start winding down, then it's really time to to focus in on the NHL February I think is like the best month for hockey because that's where it's like everybody is sort of pushing towards the end here. Twenty game sprint. That's the best hockey. You're gonna see you all regular season the twenty games sprint to the finish. And then of course, the playoffs are just fantastic nothing beats playoff hockey, but that twenty game sprint to the finish of the regular season. Is the best hockey you get during the regular season? The ranger game on Sunday. I hope I see some good hockey. I was at the game last Friday where Derek step on scored in overtime for the coyotes Rangers blue three goal lead. And then lost to the coyotes and overtime. And of course, it was Derek stop on. So like half the fans were booing half the fans were cheering like people didn't know how to react because the guy you have so much respect for you miss him in arranger uniform. And yet he comes into the garden and scores the game winning goal against you in overtime, of course. Yeah. Right. So let me ask you a question about hockey. You just said that plan. He's the best. Yes. Why is it so much better than playoff baseball? Postseason football. It's the one because it's the one sport where you know. It's a noticeable difference in the level of play hockey is such a physically demanding sport that I know football is football, right? And we see how vicious the the Dame football is the toll that takes on these guys bodies skating around on that ice with the collisions and the amount of energy it takes and the amount of just fatigue. There's a reason why shifts are only a minute long the best player on the ice. Only. Plays nineteen minutes. A game out of a sixty minute game. The best player only plays eighteen nineteen minutes. Sometimes guy plays twenty one minutes. You're like man, I got a lot of effort tonight. Alexander Ovechkin on doesn't play that much. All these the best players don't play that much because it's it's too physically demanding. Your your shift is over two minutes, your guest, and then the other team has an advantage escape by you. In the playoffs, though, when you know that you're season's going to be over you can give that extra effort because you don't have you know, the end is near. It's not like there's forty more games left in the regular season in your pacing yourself think about this. Here's the best correlation that I could bring up to you, Sean. Watch the Golden State Warriors in the regular season right now. And then watched him in the playoffs. With the warriors are doing this year. Is what NHL players do during the regular season. The warriors know that they're going to make it to the playoffs. This is not warrior basketball that we're seeing right now from this team. It's obvious. It's not like they're taking nights off, but they're not playing with the same intensity because after going through the finals past couple of years, they know the type of energy it takes to win a seven game series in the NBA playoffs and the NBA playoffs are three months long. In the NHL. These guys know the intensity level it takes to play a playoff game. It's a completely different atmosphere. It's most noticeably the different play the NFL you watch that Monday night football game between the chiefs and the Rams and you watch the AFC or NFC championship game this year. You put those two games against each other and not tell people what point of the season. It was they wouldn't be able to tell you, which is which. Right. And that game was special because it was too elite teams had a playoff like feel to it. Why do you think that people say that why do you think people say playoff feel because you know, certain games in the playoffs have a different intensity different atmosphere than regular season games. And when you get a regular season game that gives that extra effort that gives that extra intensity level. People say that was a great game felt like a playoff game playoff like atmosphere. Right. Right. Would it be a term as playoff like atmosphere? If there wasn't something different between the playoffs and regular season. But hockey, they just step it up a couple of notches. It's really is significant it's more significant in hockey than it is in any other sport. It could be too because in the NFL you have that intensity during the regular season because every game so much. Yes. Hockey basketball, not someone also the margin of error in hockey is much less than in any other sport. And bingo and one basketball doesn't matter because our is going to win first round. If the war all sweep the warriors. The warriors are a five the warriors are five minutes away from blowing out anymore tackling. So they go on his fourteen Ron quicker than any quicker than you. Blink. You you go to the bathroom during warrior game. You come back. They're up seventeen like what just happened? Oh, Steph curry just hit four threes. Okay. No. It's not about that. You can make up deficits in the NHL in especially in a playoff game. You're going up against the hot goaltender all of a sudden a bed bouncing the puck. And it goes in the back of the net. You might have lost that game. You might never get an opportunity to score a goal. And so the margin of error is so incredibly small it takes that extra level of intensity. Which is why playoff Hawkins better than anything else. Louis. Eight five five three two three four NBC's eight five five three two three four six. "Bulldog he's gonna get his nose into things and he's going to be a grinded out type of player in all three ends of the ice and he can bring some good speed he's got some very good offensive skill but at the same point he's not a goal score is not a producer like guy like his films edina could have been so you take the fourth pick this year you get brady could chuck for the future that's fine but the problem is now you don't have a pick next year and what happens if you win the top pick number one overall is going to be jack hughes who some of said to be perhaps the next patrick kane first overall american who is very good offensively skilled who can score goals who can put up points and be a franchise player men enemy jack use his his brother quinn hughes just got drafted by vancouver this year and he was making some outstanding plays in their prospect camp that kind of opens semis jack hughes is is going to return i believe i believe he's returning to the under eighteen program for the for usa hockey and the us development program and last year he put up a lot of points just imagine what he's going to do this year mind you the competition is much different than if you were to go to the to the canadian hockey league or if he were to play elsewhere maybe that'd be overseas or maybe that would be college hockey just want to look up real quick to see when jack use birthday is jack hughes was born may fourteenth two thousand one okay so he's only seventeen years old he's young seventeen so he wouldn't be able to go to college so he'd have to be either have to go back to the us under eighteen team or go to the i mean he could go to europe what do you do the austin matthews type of thing i don't think so xausa matthews when he was eligible to be drafted he was one or two days off from being eligible for the draft i he gives two days off for being eligible for the draft before twenty fifteen out of a jacqueline connor mcdavid year in that year it would have been argued that awesome matthews would have been the third overall pick to arizona going to his hometown team but matthews decided to leave and go to europe playing switzerland and he was phenomenal there gets drafted first overall jack us he might be able to do that but i don't know how that would necessarily work with his eligibility but jack us is a guy that is going to be a first overall pick he's he's got the talent to be a longtime franchise player and ottawa gives up their their pick next year where they could legitimately have a chance to pick him to take brady could chalk this year but at the same point just imagine the amount of backlash that peer dory and would've faced and the organization would have faced if they'd given up the fourth overall pick this year to say look we have a feeling we could be worse than where we are this past year we could be a team that finishes dead last all we could be a team that we might finish in the bottom three i mean if they finish the thirteen they can still pick sixth they still falls far back as sixth or they can finish i and still pick fourth well don't forget i mean he's peer dory in the long term answer gm i mean he just seemed like he just got a contract extension or did he okay mean tim murray did though before he ended up getting fired cell but i mean the whole organization is just still in such disarray that it is really ugly at what's coming for ottawa i don't think this year they're going to be a team that can be able to contend for any type of playoff spot they're probably going to contend for dead last and i just don't know why they would have decided to give up the pick they did and i would have done it regardless of of the backlash over to face if i was pure dory and i would have just said colorado here's pick number four this year have it and i would have.

"Worst stanley cup odds then the sabre yes and that's hard to do there are only about three or four teams i think it's ottawa the rangers the islanders and i forget who the fourth maybe montreal maybe there are only like three or four teams with worse odds than the sabre sabres are sixty six to one on by the way don't yet no dome colorado though has ottawa's first pick next year and let's say that they win the draft lottery they're getting jack hughes whose touted to be maybe the next patrick kane yeah that would be regrettable for the senators uses he's compared to kane because he's small right he smaller he's quick yes smart quick scoring center offensively skilled yeah yeah i think the size comparisons are what jack gets to to patrick kane when thinking about that trade if you're ottawa man ottawa you are a mess you'd like to rebuild and you don't have your first round pick yep and what do you do does matter shane just be your best player and be there forever and just plus he's expected to be a free agent next year duchenne is yeah and they've got to figure out what to do with carlson and they're gonna get pennies on the dollar for eric carlson because no teams can assign him or not is going to trade a lot of way unless they're sure they can get him for a contract extension yup and he's been given the right to negotiate with other teams so teams can try and find out they offered him eight years in eighty million and he turned it down how how could you not turn it down you you'd have to get out of there if you're an ottawa eight oh three zero five fifty to join us one eight eight eight five fifty to five fifty again.
