He used stole a puck and scored early before assisting on jesper bratz two goals. Then it turned back 32 shots for New Jersey, which pulled into a virtual tie with Carolina for the metropolitan division lead. We haven't hung on or we didn't have to rely on our goaltenders to steal this one. It was, you know, games where we've come out in one games. "Like Cal my car, not even recognizable in the decisions that he makes for the most positions. Clayton Keller, who I think most people who watch him regularly understand that he's one of the best playmakers in the NHL. In junior, he literally just gave down the winning took low percentage shots randomly through puck's blindly into the spot, dumped the puck in when he should be carrying it. So like, he also had color that is, and all of these other players, they ever had the tools to be able to find different ways to create or they already did all the translatable stuff, all the stuff that you would see eventually in the NHL. They just did it out at a different volume. And as they stepped up to the next level, those favorable situations continued to be favorable situations, and they realized that they could get more value out of them, or those favorable situations were harder to get. And so by natural adjustment they realized that they should probably be making them more effective decision or more decision from that spot. Well, a guy who ties into this conversation that I'm really excited about, and he's not someone that necessarily gets a lot of national conversation because on his team, he's got Jack Hughes, he's got jesper Brad. He's got a lot of exciting players that are going to kind of hog a lot of the attention is Dawson Mercer.

"Absolutely. All right, Sean. Let's take our break here. And then when we come back, we're going to keep chatting. We are chatting with Sean Shapiro and you are listening to the hockey PDO guest on the sportsnet radio network. Welcome back to the hockey PDO cast here with Sean Shapiro, Sean. We did Jack Hughes. We did red wings in the first half. Let's talk about the NHL All-Star Game because I know you've got some thoughts on this and it's probably the one time I'm going to talk about the All-Star Game here in the PDO test, not an event that gets typically a lot of coverage here on the show, although we'll see maybe this year I decided to go out to the Florida for the event. We'll do some fun stuff from there. But let's talk logistics. Let's talk the selection process. Let's talk everything. What's in your mind about this? Well, all star games in general are I want them. I want them to be fun again. I wish it's always funny looking back. Like I remember as a kid, we talked about technology on the first half of the first half of this with Jack Hughes and how we can really appreciate with the HD. And everything like that. The other thing that technology is effectively killed all star games, because the fact of the matter is this past weekend, right? How many of the top players in the world were you able to just flip over and watch all the time, right? Like when you were a kid growing up, you could watch the game that was in your market and the national TV game and you didn't really get to watch, you didn't get to watch the best players every night because it just wasn't, it wasn't possible. That's not where we were in streaming and all of that stuff. And I think that's what made the All-Star Game fun for me, like the nostalgia factor where it's like, oh, I get to see all the best players in the world. Like I actually get to watch them. And now I get to watch them on a nightly basis because of how easy it is. And I think that kind of, I think that doesn't get talked about enough of why all star games kind of got killed off. And I think that applies to all sports.

"Dmitri filippovich. Welcome to the hockey PDO cast. My name is Michelle Obama and joining me for the first time in 2023. It feels good to say that. It's my good buddy Sean Shapiro Shaun, what's going on? Not much, not much. It's good to hop on. It's happy new year to I think I was on one of your last shows of 2022, right? I think it was the last one. Oh, no, no, 'cause it was the one right before I went on a Christmas holiday, and then I did a few when I came back before that, the year turned. But yeah, one of the last ones. Yeah, but a good way, a good way to start 9 days into the air, but it's good to see what's good to be on. And I believe that one drew rave everybody is because it had a segment we like to call Sean doing quick math on the show. Oh yeah. I got some comments that were like, we need to make this a recurring thing or just you just doing calculations which aren't that hard if you actually have time to sit down and you're not under the gun where you're talking on a live program. But no, I was good. All right, man. Well, we don't have anything necessarily specific. It's a Monday show, so I kind of just want to start off a new week, talk about stuff that's been on my mind over the weekend, things that I was watching. I was watching all these games on Saturday and Sunday, and so we're going to run through a list of stuff. So perfect. First on my list, we need to talk about Jack Hughes. And here's why. NHL's three stars this week, David pasternak. I just did a big thing with Matt Porter on the show recently. Ross was Dolly and I feel like I've talked about him on the PDO cast. A solid 25 to 30 times so far this season, I'd guess. They've been covered extensively here on the show by me. But the second star in between those two guys was none other than Jack Hughes, who just absolutely erupted. And initially I was going to line this up by talking about how he's on a heater, but I don't think that necessarily even applies here because I kind of suggest that framing suggests that he's just hot right now, and this is an aberration, but in reality, I wouldn't expect him to keep scoring 19 goals and the last 20 games he's played or something like that. That's clearly on the high end of things, but just in terms of the impact he's having on the games the way he's playing how everything's come together for him and the level he's reached the season. It's kind of a new normal for him. So

"Where are you going to be starting from? Like, again, if you're around 500, yes, you could absolutely go on a second half run there. It seems like the brooms do it every single year where they get hot in February and March and April and kind of get rolling to the playoffs. But where are you going to be sat in front? That's going to be the issue because you better be hoping that either swayman and Omar are locked in at the start or pasta knock and hall and some of these other guys are leading the way because it's going to be tough. There's going to be some rough stretches, I think, especially in October, November, in early December where we're going to have quite a few podcasts of us just being like, we'll see what happens. I really don't have a great this team right now. They're missing arguably the best all around left wing in the game and what I think we should say is a top three defense in the league. Yes. Yeah. No, I mean, it is brutal. I also think it goes to show you and this is just another reminder of how far the bruins are away from contending for a cop away. And again, I separate contending for a playoff spot from contending for a cup. Lots of teams make them playoffs. Did the capitals have a sniff at the cup this year? No. Like there are so many teams like that that, you know, they get in. Like the predators when they got in this year and I had to face the abs. That's stupid. Like, yeah, you could play off game tickets, but what cost? You could have dealt at home and forsberg in the past bunch of years. But you look at like this stretch. You know, are they close to Tampa? No, Florida, no, Caroline, a really not at all. Colorado, no. Vegas even know. Like in Vegas has to figure out their net situation. So that's a whole different can of worms, but still that roster should be a lot better than it has been. And oh, by the way, they have Bruce Cassidy coaching the team. So you can probably expect they're going to at least be in the playoff picture. And then Arizona's Arizona, whatever. There'll be an ASU. Maybe we'll go out there and pretend we're in college again. Just for that. But yeah, rough, rough, rough ass schedule. Especially in that stretch. And by the way, every team goes through that. But for them to have that, it's such a dire time with their roster. Not great for them. Not too great. Anyways. Yes. Anyways, well, the bruins don't have a first round pick. At least as of as of recording this, they don't have a first round pick. They do have multiple day two picks in the second through 7th round. Day two prospects. Obviously everybody looks at centers, you got like Jack Hughes and northeastern, that's the big one that everybody loves. You wrote about him saying that, you know, he checks all the boxes. He's a local kid. Thanks for hockey. You know that if they draft a Jack Hughes, all the Bernie Sanders just be like, another freaking local kid that we got to hear about. But he's good. So well, yeah, I mean, I'm just queuing up the standings here. And so there are 8 points out of third in the central out of four rather in the central behind Minnesota. And if you go to four teams on the other side, they're just 5 points behind LA and Thanos a, like they're not they're not selling yet. As for John klingberg, I mean, every contract impasse isn't because they don't like a player or the player doesn't like the team. Hey, we're stuck here. You know, this is the money we've got. Yeah. So when you say sell off, of course, everybody looks at Jamie Ben. And Tyler Sagan, we've got to have somebody on the other side that says, yeah, I'll take lots of that salary for you. And so it's not as easy, I would think. There are times when I go, man, you know, Dallas is pretty good. And then other times they just aren't. It would seem odd that they would get to a point where kleinberg leaves for free. So if it's a boat klingberg, I mean, they got the trade deadline. I don't know, has that moved yet, drakes are no, no, that don't move 21st. No. Yeah. So, you know, I mean, you get into start a march and if they decide they can't get them signed, I'm sure. What's interesting about this is Jack Hughes is a confident 20 year old. So legally speaking ray, he can't even enjoy a nice refreshing glass of 43 year old Canadian club whisky until May 14th when he turns 21. So, yeah, it's hard to believe when you watch these kids, right? You're like 20. You know, like it's really kind of odd to think about. And I do find it interesting, although there seems to be less of it that people are surprised that the kids now have more confidence or more flair or more show. I mean, their whole life has been on camera, right? Like they've, you know, we have a few videos or when we grew up, right? But it's like, you know, you can't watch them anymore. They're in the garbage bin. These guys like everything's now what's on Instagram and all their social media, but even before all their games were like, they could watch themselves. They're used to watching themselves. It doesn't bug them anymore. So to have an opinion and they're like, yeah, well, why not? And so Jack pitches a stick over the glass and Ziggler's pitches to stick over the glass. Why not? I've come a long way on this and I find myself more and more entertained watching these guys play. Almost weekly. I'm like, damn, that was awesome. Oh, look at that. That was funny. Like, I don't know, you saw Brendan bronze scored in Michigan. I was there the whole time, so I kind of know what's going on, but yeah, I heard it went really well and you know, I don't know if that's happened in hockey a lot, you know, like features like that, so I thought that was pretty cool to be one of the first guys to get that opportunity and obviously with ESPN and they like my personality and obviously my game is picking up. So it's a good opportunity and it was a fun day. So I think it went really well. You know, Jack you know, you play and you have such great flair to your game and we thought with Trevor's egress earlier and there seems to be out of that development program in the U.S.. Like I just see like there's so much character out of that and flair and creativity. Does this part of that come from how they coach you there or as part of it just the way you guys are? I don't know, you know, I would say, especially our team, like we just had a bunch of beauties on our team, just good guys. Guys you like hanging around. You know, we loved being at the rink in terms of the on ice and the creativity what you're talking about. On the ice for two hours practice and then probably 45, 30 minutes after practice too. So that was a team that loved playing hockey. And you know, obviously, it's some special players and guys with a lot of passion and a lot of different personalities, you know? So it was a really fun team and it wasn't a cocky team, but it was for sure a really confident and fun team stuff. I think that translate and carried over that man, that's got to be way more fun than to just grind through a boring practice again to have guys that haven't fun while you're doing it, right? Oh, yeah, I'll tell you that. At the program, it was all that competition based. You know, it was all games, always blue versus red one one team loses one team wins, you know? So there's less Latino playing every other day, you know? You can't do that competitiveness on a daily basis, but at the program, it was just extremely fun practicing because we're getting better, we're enjoying and you're laughing out there and smiling the whole time. You know, that's the culture. I think we want to create New Jersey where we all come to the rank and enjoy it and love it and obviously it's along season with ups and downs, but we gotta enjoy practice and enjoy the game. Seeing a bunch of videos from you guys you and your brothers when you're young and your tooling around out on the ice or your fiddling around in a basement playing play in the hockey or whatever. Was it kind of the same there? Were you guys always competing against each other? In the.

"Not now with the Bobby ore. Yeah. Right? When you watch Bobby or do what he was doing back in the day against his opponents, makar does the same thing. I laughed watching the goal against Nashville, because all I could think about would be the Nashville coaching staff going through the video saying, yeah, that forwards just got to stay in front of them. He was trying. His agility on the blue line, it's like he's on a tightrope. Yeah. And he opens up his hips. He gets on his edges, but he seems to go faster. Now he's around that guy. That guy's in the dust. And he comes in and he sticks a goal scorer's goal over a vesna trophy candidate in UC Farrell. Yeah. Like, the goal he scored in Chicago when he, you know, he left Kirby Doc. We're dead. And then went around him. Like, it's amazing. Another two points last night he's got 16 goals on the season. Yeah. 16 goals. Are you kidding me? I mean, he's McDavid like, right? And I know that comparison has been made, but from a comparing a defenseman to a forward isn't easy to do, but based on that, just explosion of speed. Again, the edge work, all of that. He might be the closest player to McDavid in that regard from the blue line in. While McDavid does things other people can't do. And so does kale makar. And there's not very many people in the game that can say that. No. Let's stick with Colorado for a moment. Top story with bull byram, right? And I know you've crossed paths with this guy. You know, you think of what he's going to do potentially in the National Hockey League. And the sky might be the limit, but he has to get healthy. He's got a history of concussions. And disturbing the news on Tuesday coming out that he's taking a personal leave because he's not feeling well. So the lingering effects are there. And man, it just feels like this young man needs time. He needs time. He needs treatment. He just needs to do anything other than playing games. I would refer him to Sidney Crosby. Yeah. And say, do you remember the time or he might have been too young because I don't even remember how many years ago it was? When Sid was gone for a year. Right? Like he wasn't right. Yeah. Bowl by rooms had three concussions in the last calendar year. And you have to be concerned yes for his unlimited hockey potential, but for him for him as a young man. And what difference does it make if he plays in January or February or.

The fact that we got the season two was miraculous. Now that we're cruising through season three, I mean, we're not careful. There's going to be a season four. And then easy, don't jump the gun here. Don't jump again. We've got Jack Hughes and the New Jersey Devils, little fun story, his family is with Quinn and Jack and Luke and Ellen and Jimmy. We've crossed past so many different ways. I know your family has so is mine with the Hughes family. So looking forward to catching up with Jack you'll join us today on the podcast. So we're recording episode 16 rape on Wednesday. And we were all part of the Toronto Maple Leafs Vegas golden knights broadcast on TSN on Tuesday night. You and Gordon Miller were calling the game from studio in Vancouver. We're obviously in Toronto, the game is being played in Vegas. Just a classic example of how bizarre the world is the world of the National Hockey League. Now, you and I before that game talked a little bit about this. It's a challenge, isn't it? To get a feel for not what's going on in a game. I mean, you're watching you're seeing your analyzing, but just to generally get a feel for where we're at in the regular season schedule. It's hard to get a grasp of it. I don't even think it's a league right now. It's just like a bunch of games that are randomly scheduled around the place. And you look down any app that you have to get the scores for a particular day. And at the bottom are four postponements. And then 5 tomorrow and then three the day after. And it's like, there's no fault in it. You know, I mean, like, what are you going.

"I have so I had them at 22, just to kind of rattle through here because I had the penguins at 21, where we talked about them. I had to catch up. I got the I have the Devils at 22. I think that they're a team like on the precipice of being something noteworthy. But not quite there yet and they definitely lose a bit of oomph without Jack used in the lineup and I think that watching Jack Hughes reach superstar level and it's coming. I was interested in watching him on any given night and seeing where that trajectory heads. So without him in the lineup, they lose a few points. 21, it's my shock you. Might absolutely shock you. I have the Boston Bruins at 21. I have a benign. It seems like I'm the bruins however on this. Wow. Podcast. Yeah, I mean, I'll tell you, even as a brooms fan, like I'm watching every game, but like, they are not super exciting. They're top line is obviously incredible. That's going to make you make it worth tuning in on any given night. But like they're not that exciting behind the top line, they're watchability is quite low because it's hard to watch them. They're not playing games. They're taking a week off in between games every time. It's insane. Whoever scheduled, whoever came up with the schedule for the bruins needs to be thrown in jail. And I will also take off points that they keep wearing those stupid third jerseys that I dislike quite a lot. The one with just like the block B yeah the top line is so good in terms of even watchability for me that I have then that high just purely out of respect for I want to see their chemistry and this is going to be the nerdiest thing I think I've ever done on this podcast. But the geometry they use on the ice is so appealing to me. They do these kind of diagonal dumpings where it's like clearly a design sort of past and struggle. You just see the ice differently than everyone else. And I really enjoy that. You're going to be aware of this dad obviously having watched the game and being a fan of the team. But they've played 300 minutes at 5 one 5 without bergeron or coil on the ice. So that's kind of like bottom 6 minutes, right without either those top two centers, these were four goals in that time..

"I'm really happy with this one. Yeah i mean. There's a lot of the season ida game in buffalo. I think i'd like nine shots. No points now like this is ridiculous. You know best player on the ice in note points but that's the way it goes. Sometimes you some nights you have a bad night. You're not feeling up to power play points you know so i think for me. There was a point last year where it was kinda shifting where i was heading into the euro. Come on. I need to be a top player on my team. And then i realized you know. I'm going to be a special player in the nhl and you know this is a continuation of that in a minute. Just take another step forward so when you say the take that step. What are you thinking about like what. What are you going to be happy with. What's going to make you feel that at a few things in my head. You know the most important thing is leading the devils. The some wins. You know we don't wanna be at the at the bottom of the league again We ought to be pushing. And like i said we want to be playing important hockey down the stretch but on a personal note. Obviously points are important but wanna continue my game Keep getting better more dominant and you know the points will come. I just finish off place. But i think everyone is expecting me to have breakout year and i'm expecting on the less nico. He sure it seems as if when you look at the new jersey devils and the back end is the back end. And it's you know. Just gotta shot in the arm the summer. Everything upfront is built around unico. What should we know about. He sure he's one of one of our favorite players on this podcast. Why always stealth selke candidate etcetera which we know about he. Sure from your point of view. Yeah i mean. I wouldn't say he's been written off but he's last year. I think people forgot about him for sure. His the injury may be just because i missed the first thirty games in he had a freak accident took a slap shot to the face. You know so. He had a weird year last year. But you know we all expect a new jersey for to comeback in lead us be a great captain and you know produce and have a great year. It's not gonna work. If both of us aren't moving we me and him got to push his team forward. And i think i've new jersey knows the kind of person and player he has and i think he's not great year this. We had thai smith in our podcast last year. I was really impressed with him. Didn't know him that well but really impressed with him He told some great stories about competing. With stuff with brendan gallagher. You guys are friends roommates. Are you guys competitive with each other. Yes and no. It's different in season and out of season you know in the summer you're very competitive but in the season you're all focused on a common goal. You know We're both focused on pushing the devils ford and progressing our game so but smith a great did and we had some good times last year in living together this year. We got no furniture and our apartment right now. So he's sticking out right now. All i'm here but it'll be gooden. Think he's gonna take another step forward in nba good player again. So does he have the duties. Is that what that means everything together. Got him. I ordered the stuff for him but i think he's putting it together but we don't. We don't have nothing. There is no couch out. I've nothing in my room. So my tell lindy calmed down the first few days of training camp for the boys some furniture in now we we should mention to you in quin. Bought a place yeah. This year in michigan is their furniture in this house. Yeah yeah there as we Yeah we live together. We a few buddies out too so it was good. You know it's lawn. You know you pretty much saw this guy every day this year. We didn't really go on or the summer. We didn't really go on vacations apart from each other. So be nice to get my space now. But he's a good roommate and we had a lot of fun this summer. You know All the vancouver fans are all paranoid. The queen's gonna be a devil eventually sunday to yeah i mean i started the recruitment process. No but he he loves couvert. He's got to get that deal done. He's got to play some hockey but Yeah i mean. I'd love to meet up with him some day and now we got luke i i don't know if i see myself leaving jersey for a while but If quinn everyone come. I mean we'd we'd welcome with With open arms. I remember two years ago. When the bubble playoffs he played his heart out. And you know vegas made him the target they were like. I wondered what you thought watching that as vegas basically said we are not letting this guy beat us and we are going to take every run at him we can and i thought quinn handled it incredible. That's what happens when you're a great player. You become the focus of the game plan and wanted to know what you thought watching that. Because i thought he played his heart out in a situation where it was obvious. They said we have to. We have to beat the sky. The i remember. I think he was a point per game. Maybe like seventeen and eighteen games but man. I think he got disrespected this year. You know i mean i know. His first year is unbelievable. But and i know he had a lot of dashes and people questioned his defense this year. But you know at the end of the day when you're on a bad team that's what happens. You don't score as much as you'd like. Can you give up more goals than you should. I think people forget. He's an elite defencemen in this league. I mean man that playoffs him. Pd were credible. Driving that team to game seven with vega. i mean. He's an elite defenseman. He's going to have a big time year. I think people forget how good he is it. Any rough You mentioned name. A couple of seconds ago veteran coach well respected.

"Interesting because that was a question. We we got a question. The other day. The commissioner i in a meeting we did and it was putting covert aside. What is your biggest challenge and funny thing about where we are is. You can't put covert aside right. Cova defines everything we do and everything we're going to do for the course of this year. Unfortunately so you know. We are very pleased and happy. We've been able to do as well as we've done Both completing in nineteen twenty season and completing the truncated twenty twenty one season. We're looking forward to more progress this year. And as you said completing eighty two game season in full stanley cup playoffs and getting back to a more normal calendar than we've had in the last two years. Those are all important objectives. We are pleased with the growth of the sport. Growth of the league. And the league's fan base in and revenues We hope to get back on that cycle right so you know. The last two years have been strange years This year we were hoping that most if not all of our teams will have full buildings Fans in the stands passion around the game and we can get right back on the the cycle. We were on which is growth just out of that a couple of questions. First of all specific to canada. What are you expecting in terms of building. Capacities so Currently we understand. They'll be reduced capacity in vancouver. They'll be reduced capacity in quebec and to start off the season We don't know where we are going to be in ontario yet in. Ottawa and toronto both hoping For more guidance on that in the coming days and weeks and in alberta there won't be any capacity restrictions and manitoba no capacity restrictions so Pretty much full buildings certainly different than where we were last year in our canadian cities so hopefully very soon will have full capacity in our seven canadian cities. The other thing. I think people are curious about is just the cap you know you talked about the the business impact of cova. How long are you expecting either. A flat cap or just a million dollar raise per year. So i think we move at least our current projections on revenue Move us into kind of a million dollar raise a year starting next year So i do expect That will kick in. We do have flexibility under our formula under agreement players association to revisit that to the extent. There's a need to revisit that and perhaps make The increase greater but Certainly in short term. We've been telling our clubs to kind of plan on one million dollar increases to the cap olympics. That's a huge one. obviously As i look around the landscape am i characterizing this correctly i get the sense that. Nhl owners or the nhl or donald fear. The pa are thrilled about any of this but the players are would it be safe to characterize at the players are the only ones that are enthused about the idea. I think once you clarify that news enthused. That's probably true. I do think look. The bottom line is when we negotiated this with the players association. In the summer of twenty twenty. We knew it was important to the players and That's impart why we agreed to it. You know at the end of the day as we played out the negotiation the summer with the w. h. f. One of the huge issues was who's assuming the risk of kobe and the fact that the players kind of stepped to the plate and really assumed a large portion of that risk themselves tells you how much and how important it is to them. So i totally respect that. They love competing for their countries and winning medals for the countries and so i totally respect the importance. that this is for the players it's been demonstrated by what we're dealing with. So we support it. I mean it's You know best on best competition on the olympic stage You know you gotta look at the positives. The positives are they'll be more people watching our game than typically watch our game and and maybe that translates to the growth. I was talking about so we're trying to focus on the positives of olympic participation. And not as much on the negatives is there a deadline for when the nhl would have to say in the players have to say we can't go because their commitment to this so the commitment that the wf made us going way back way back to The meeting we had with rene fizzle At the stanley cup final. Is they understand that. We have to be flexible. We we have to have the ability to pull out if circumstances warrant us pulling out and so you know our discussions in our agreement with them. Contemplates our ability to pull out at any time There are different financial consequences associated with pulling out late as opposed to sometime this fall. And so that that's recognized in the agreement where where there's an assumption of costs associated with a a late withdrawal. I certainly hope that we're not in a position where we're making that decision in january or february if a decision to be made hopefully that comes sooner than unvaccinated players. The numbers you expect revolve around so we get projections From the clubs on a frequent basis One of the kind of the last gating Factors was what there are protocols. we're gonna look like Think we got the final protocols out. In early september to our clubs. I think that was a a motivating factor for a number players who are now in the process of getting accented. We do expect by the start of the regular season. The opening day of the regular season that the number of of nhl players who aren't fully vaccinated will be a very low number. Know less than fifteen maybe even less than ten so You know we're a very high subscription rate on vaccination in the nhl community think. We're about ninety eight ninety nine percent which We're we're pleased about so. In the code protocol agreement. There was something that said that there could be a choice to pursue a travel exemption with the canadian government. I think it's by friday. If a player is unvaccinated will there be a chance to get a travel exemption. Or are they going to be on their own so I think the commitment we made the protocol was to sit down with the players association by friday And talk about whether there's a need to go to the canadian government to seek an exemption that would be a process It's not as simple as picking up the phone Making a call and trying to get a travel exemption that are prior experience in the exemptions The national interest exemptions. We got from the canadian authorities. Were it's a you know. It's a multi week. Maybe sometimes multi-month process to get those types of approvals. So that's one of the things..
