"The pirates in a game where they blew a lead. That was a hard series to watch. Very sloppy in the field. You know, I saw Austin Riley make a play the other day that was tremendous on a short hop. And then I watched some of these other teams. On the shift, they don't know who needs to run to the ball. They cut in front of guys. It's like, you have such inconsistency and good defensive play. The Giants had the bases loaded Friday night, hit a one hopper to first, and he three hops at the home. And the catcher can't hold the ball in the run scored in the inning continued. The giants game on Friday, the balls hit the first base, is you said a three hopper was like too hop the dirt and it popped up on the catch, and he should have been an easy hour. That was terrible. He couldn't even look to second, but the picture probably wouldn't have covered for the double play to end the ending. So I think the easy out at home, they couldn't even get that. Royals come off that win over the Dodgers yesterday and they go to Minnesota. This is an interesting spot here, bubic against Ryan. Twins. Almost a $2 favorite here a mall with a total of 8. I actually like the visitors here in this spot. I have a hard time back in Kansas City because a lack of offense, but I think if you're in Minnesota, you've got to get on track and you've got to do it. You got a 25 now from a dollar 90 on the overnight. Well, I think that's the guardians. The all right, one 90. To me, when you look at this twins team, they need this game badly. Run line plus the dollar 5. I like taking the run line against the royals here that bullpen is bad. Mike Minnesota, it's turning into code red. They still have 8 games against the guardians, but they've got to be within about two games if they're going to make a push. And the schedule shakes out pretty well for the guardians. They've got 30 of their next 48 to close out the season at home. Yeah. And then these two teams meet these two teams played all their games in two bunches. Once they're in the earlier part of the year and then in the last two weeks of the season, a's are in Texas tonight, obviously the rangers under new management could probably going for the ace. Right now there are two and a half games ahead of both Minnesota and the Chicago White Sox. I absolutely do. I think they're going to run away and hide Minnesota, excuse me, Minnesota just doesn't have the consistency still in the bullpen. You know, Mike, they have an opportunity on a day where the guardians lost. So the loss you actually would have negated that game on Saturday, instead of sitting two and a half back most importantly too in the lost column. I don't know. I think it's going to be a road challenge from the White Sox not consistent enough. Everybody keeps saying the white sex widex. At some point in time, they are who they are. Bill Parcells to me is the greatest line in sports. You are what your record is. And this team is not particularly good. They have base running gaps. They have mistakes, mental mistakes constantly. They're just not a good team. Do you trust the end of the back half of their bullpen? The White Sox? You're supposed to. Well, no, hold on a minute. When graveman is good, Hendrix is bad when Hendrix is good grave is bad. Yeah. The other race, the NL central, cardinals close to $2 now in the market. You can find them at one 90. Brewers plus a dollar 45. This is totally flipped from where the brewers were two 50 and the Cardinals were as much as plus one 90 plus $2. Do you believe this is over? Would you take the no on the brewers in the playoffs? I would, if you believe the Padres are going to ascend, but we believe the Philadelphia. So it's really it's three teams for two spots. San Diego, Philadelphia, Milwaukee. They're separated by a total of two games right now. Yeah, I would agree with you there and I think both of the other teams have been a little bit more consistent and the Padres having to play those I'm sorry, the brewers having to play 7 of their ten games against the Dodgers. Mike, they could end up going two and 5, one in 6, would it surprise anybody? American League, a little more complicated. The wild card. Toronto is a game up on Tampa Bay, Seattle, a half game up with Tampa Bay being the third wild card, Baltimore game and a half back, Minnesota, and the White Sox two games back. Yeah, I think we're going to wind up with Toronto Seattle, and then I don't know who that third team is going to be, whether it's Tampa Baltimore, Chicago or Minnesota, but I'll tell you one thing. I'm more interested in Seattle getting in. I really don't care about the wildcard race because Toronto's been disappointing all year.

"Well brian walden. The the playoffs are here. Had a a fun game last night. With the red sox and the yankees. And now it's the national league's turn and that means it's the cardinals and the dodgers good morning to you in. This should be a fun night. A baseball absolutely. And it's pleasure to talk to you on the on the eve of this big game. The whole season comes down to one nine inning game and of course max scherzer the the local products. Who's been so successful for. So long against adam wainwright at for me. This feels like the best possible situation for the cardinals which is come in and that one game and punch knockout. When it's still in my opinion the best team in baseball which is los angeles dodgers and shares. Her obviously is a tremendous competitor. He reminds me a lot of chris. Carpenter in how he approaches his work on the mound. But there's a crack in the door and that is at zor. His last two times out a gave up eleven runs in ten and a third innings. And that's very uncharacteristic for him you don't know if maybe he was cruising or maybe there's a you know some fatigue or a minor injury you know he's not as young as it used to be of course either wayne right on the other side of the coin you know. Both pitchers are well rested. So you know. There's no reason why those two couldn't pitch deep into this game and of course we're a twenty six man roster teams can put a number of pitchers ready and they'll be probably quicker with the hook than usual even though these guys are our top line guys for example on the cardinal side and then we haven't seen rosters yet but we believe that both dakota hudson and miles michael will be available for long relief then. Of course you have. Kim and potentially jack flirty as well. So you could potentially have five starters Ready to pitch this game for the cardinals. You know what's interesting is how we saw the game play out last night with the red sox and the yankees to your point that. Hey if a guy's not looking the way that you want to see him go you're gonna pull them. And that's what aaron booed did last night with garrett cole and you may see that tonight with either wayne writer sherzer. It's very similar situation. Dan i mean garrett colas was considered the best pitcher on either one of those two rosters and you know in in that big game..

"With zeki. We got some news. Take your plan a little pepper here. Got some injuries installed Saw this did not like this understood it and took away. I'm not really concerned jack. Flirty down left the game. After two plus innings on tuesday got hit around a little bit gave up a home or two. I think She'll comes out and the reason the reason i'm not totally concerned with this year is because he spent a lot of time on the shelf earlier in the year with an oblique string so he's not moving around much. He's not throwing much okay. What i understand is the front of the shoulder is where the soreness was or the tenderness was so i instantly just think bicep tendonitis which is just some tendons. That are a little pissed off because they haven't been worked as much as he's going to be working right now so it's kind of getting those things back fired up and they can be a little cranky when that happens. So that's where i'm going with this. And what this means and blah blah blah blah blah so the mri mostly negative. No major structural damage Those are all good things. Little trigger words structural damage blah blah blah. So it's just really not trying to turn this into anything bigger than what it looks like it could be like. I'm just glad that there was nothing major in the pictures because this sucks this sucks. The cardinals and jack flaherty need a healthy turn. I was Disappointed to see it because Super excited when he came back. He made what this was his third time through. Is i start. Back was very excited to see him back And hopefully he's back soon because now it's the show now we're talking about a different injury. This is not a reentry. This is a new injury so awfully. "What can you tell us about the catcher who I believe is a future Hall of Famer just like Buster Posey. Absolutely. I think when you think of catch is still in the game, you think Johnny and win anything But supposing you think Hall of Famers? Um, you know, it's It's no secret that yacht. He wants to come back to ST Louis. He made that clear and multiple reports and the Cardinals are looking to bring him back for one more year. It certainly makes sense. I mean, they have their cash of the future of on Herrera coming up, but he probably won't be ready for 2022. And because there isn't a good job filling in when needed. Um, and I honestly think because there is good enough start in most other organizations, So I think what the cardinals are looking for is to bring Jati back for one year to continue the mentorship and the leadership and all the things that he does. You cannot measure on baseball reference or a stop sign or something like that. And, you know, hopefully that's enough because they really are looking at 2022 as that year of contention was supposed to be 2021, of course, and you know there's still a chance, but 2022 is when they're looking to make their full push. It's when they're windows opening its when their top prospects will be ready. And I think that when you're making the push, and you're aiming for a World Series run You need Yadier Molina at the helm of that, and it certainly makes sense to bring him back for one more year. He's just turned 39. He's played a lot this year. We're seeing him get a couple more days off per week. Now that we're kind of in the dog day stretch of the summer. But I think it's a no brainer for both sides of the body wants to come back and the Cardinals want to bring him back. You know, it should be relatively easy to get a one year deals. Honest. Soon talking with Katie wou he or she covers the ST Louis Cardinals for the athletic as Marty likes to say, the Cardinals have become a story and it's great to have Katie on. How much is your perspective on this race change over the last month or so with regard to how the Cardinals can challenge for a postseason spot. You know, They definitely are optimistic. Coming up on this next road trip, You're going to have your projected three starters and Jack Miles and Adam Wainwright pitching a series for the first time all season. And he he did one of his last where he was like, Yeah, it's funny, but it's not because it's really frustrating. Uh, but that's a huge boost to a club when you have the guys that you've been missing all year, come back. Kuantan. Kim looks to be coming off the I'll sue along with way the blogs that would essentially give them seven starters carry. There was a time in this year where they barely had three so that kind of stuff can be a huge boost in the arm. And then you look at their schedule. I mean, they've taken pretty good advantage of their August schedule so far when they played a stretch of nearly 20 game. With opponents under 500. They still have Two more games against the Pirates. They have two more against the Tigers and the four game set in Pittsburgh. And then it's crunch time starting July. 30th there next 23 games comes against opponents that have direct implications. Neither the wild card or the division. I mean, they have the Dodgers in town for four. They have the potters in town for three. That will be a huge series. They go to Cincinnati one more time in the Reds come to ST Louis one more time as well. So There's plenty of opportunity, and I do think yes, yes, The Phillies are coming up right behind them. But the NL East with those three teams in the Phillies, the Braves and, uh oh. Which one of my missing that's there? Yeah, because.

"If he didn't cut it this year you know might actually get released and for whatever reason plumber you know has really blossomed at double a springfield. Three hundred average four hundred on base. Five hundred slugging and so you know the only thing that's the only thing that's still concerned about plumbers. He striking out over a third of the time but you know he has his numbers this year. you know. make him look like he's a guy that can get himself back on the prospect map and he's come back onto our list in the in the mid thirties after not even being ranked in our in our last go round. We've heard so much about matthew liberty for and let's go back to him. He's in your your top two here. It's been a learning season for him to go from a ball no season then all of a sudden jumped to aaa and it seems like as we go along. He's making some pretty good adjustments. That's right that's right. he really has He got he got dinged up I don't know about ten days or so ago. Gave up five runs but in a six inning outing. But he gave up those runs early. And he buckled down to give up a couple of home runs but he stayed in the game and he really really thought and then the next time out he threw six shutout innings on just four hits and no walks and looked like a guy who has a polished pitcher nearing his readiness for the major leagues. And it'll be interesting to see you know how much pressure the cardinals feel. They need to make. Certainly if miles michael s in and jack flirty can stay on their trajectory to come back and somehow help that might enable them to you know give matthew liberty or a little more development time but you know if he could string together more starts like his last time out you know i could see him ready but prior to that he had a couple of bumpy ones. And you know again. That's what you expect with a young player. Who's you know who was moved up very very aggressively this year. And it's still just twenty one years of age final question. You mentioned it earlier but zac thompson and again my guest is brian walton. The car donation dot com. Zac thompson finally picked up a win. And we've been kinda waiting for him because they're very high on this young man. Top pick out of kentucky couple years ago. That's got to be something that's good i. I'd love to see what the numbers were. Because i know he's had issues with control but bottom line getting that first win and maybe that's a starting point for him is that thomson again was moved up very aggressively never played aa and i was wondering whether it might have been you know prudent thing to send him down and let him have some success there but the cardinals had starting to shorten his outing. Zach zach thompsons outings so instead of trying to get him five or six innings going three or four innings and you know getting maybe a more success in a shorter package and then this last time as you mentioned they stretched out to six innings and he had an outing just as as good as liber or did in his six. Six shutout innings. And yeah. that's something that i think zack thompson can build on. He's certainly got.

Spiritually feels halfway a little bit more than halfway. Yeah and i think you're right man like the word grind and just the fact that for me and i think for a lot of baseball fans if feels like the normal rhythms of a season from your vantage point zack. Does it feel like that. And and last year. I thought the all star festivities homerun derby the game itself. Seen you know everyone operating in and around cores in denver kind of business as usual really for the first time i think since the pandemic started I thought that was great. It just it seemed as close to anything. We've had any normal. See that we've really had for my vantage point from From the start of this This stuff last march. Yeah definitely. I mean i. I worked the shortened season in more of a backup role since my first real hundred. Sixty two You know games going through but I mean it was. I talked to a lot of people. Do go the also game. And they're were talking about how i really did feel like his nineteen all over again which is good in some ways. A little uncomfortable in other ways but for the most part is just a always positive scientists. The kind of stuff in life returned to normal. And i i mean i think zack as far as like normal. It felt like you know a normal baseball game. And as far as the all star game is is concerned you know. It is really the one like sports. All-star celebration or a couple of days where you actually have i think is close to like competition as possible. Costa real competition as possible. Glamorous wasn't the greatest conversation was good times they have But it's still just shows that there is baseball to be talked about is still at the forefront even though there's a lot of talk about dying sport or it's losing touch there is this young generation and and he's offering Junior at the all star game and and the reactions. They're having to each other when when thought might up is a a lot of excitement kind of bubbling right now and it's really important for the leaf. The on the all star game is a great op to start doing so. You know the one. The one thing that i wish. And maybe this is getting a little nitpicky your maybe this journalists nerd of me but i do wish that maybe baseball and i should say freely admit that i don't live for instance in san diego so i don't root for the padres and i'm i know a number of their writers in folks to do a tremendous job women covering that team but i wish baseball would take some ownership in marketing. For instance more than just like to bat flip in sunglasses and like whatever suit. He's wearing the red carpet right. Like i wish they would take initiative perhaps to tell a little bit more the story of the personalities of these guys because i think especially coming off the last year The things that i find compelling and the stories that i find myself strong to which again. Perhaps they're being told by reporters. But i wish the league would control their own. Product per se are about personalities about people. Whether it's you know one of the best players in the game or whether it's you know grounds crew member i'd just i wish baseball would grab a little more of that. Maybe they are maybe start of it. But i hope it stops. It's definitely such a longstanding conversations. Add you know. You have a player like mike trout. Who is the best player this generation in decades. And how much do you really know about him. Is he likes the weather and he's to baseball and she likes tweet about flying in planes and whatnot. There isn't much there and by the way liking liking the weather like is the most mike trout like hobby outside of being very very just consistently underrated. Good like liking the weather. But also i think will will probably take a take a really strong Position have every opportunity to be the leadership and and the backbone of the players moving forward as well through some potentially historic dots. And i think what's so great about all the guys mostly guys you just mentioned are the fact. They all come from such diverse backgrounds There is a lotta talking to the all star game about how for the american league The the the first one was hit by a canadian. Born dominican player The game was won by japanese player in the game was closed out by an australian player. So you have a lot of players from different backgrounds ethnicities different stories. That are being told these days than that's really great to see. Just how much of a global sport baseball isn't how much of a market enemy tap into. Were night here. A healthy at the major league baseball. Yeah i think that it's funny. Maybe some of the things that we took for granted in sports but especially in baseball the day today rhythm of a season that starts in february in earnest with spring training and goes you know all the way until deep into october and then we kind of turn over quickly into the off season. That's what i think. I missed the most last year. Just the repetition of every day the story lines of every day and how that impacts you know the course of season but also the entire industry is the fabric of our culture. Major league baseball. I tell fans all the time you know. Some that are on the fence like this seems like a lot of work. Missile week of baseball. I'm so far behind in some ways. Maybe you are. It is a labor of love. But these guys are sometimes just a very very thin line away from from the big leagues and then how you utilize those guys at the new organization can often be what's can determine you know outside inside the plasco games here a couple of games there. Yeah i mean there's it's the cardinals devil magic guys. No one can explain it but the cardinals are good at them and creating them and you can see john. Guess you having some of those moments this season you really could. And i just liked the story. I'm a sucker for good story. He's got a gun salute. Me guy you know gets gets released by the as he has to turn. Independent bali has a great arizona. Fall league in here. He is and he gets a little chippy. When people talk about mississippi some like cups you know long shot. You know illiterate. Eight year old rookie. But he's not you know. And and and i love that edge to him but he's but he's got a great sense of humor. He had a great line the other day they said you know as your family here and he said yeah oh they would have been error if they had to walk and then he and then he said in he said it might take my dad awhile. He's a good dude and it's fun. I think it's a fun story. I think it does have an element of the team. He was frustrated by by creating trouble for himself which he did some with with the walks and he's got he's got to be better It doesn't necessarily become an indication of a season's gonna go but it wasn't a good start and it wasn't the one he wanted he he didn't. He wasn't willing to blame the conditions. The cold at stuff. I'm sure it did play a bit of a factor But this this on a night where is first starting to gain that counted since the offense left him out to dry it in san diego. It was it was good that the cardinals offense picked him up for a change and he was very appreciative of that. And i think that shows a little bit. Where jack is to he raved about the offense while he was frustrated with himself. He didn't have a he was glad to team want and they need him to be a big part of that so not not a good not a good start for him but gotta win. That's most important thing. He didn't get the win but they gotta win. You flush it any needs to be sharper moving forward. Because here's the deal. Big season for jack but it will be a hard season for the cardinals if they don't get really strong and deep starting pitching out of jack and adam wainwright especially until they get some guy's back who can be relied upon and cake and michael. That are gonna come out after this after this championship is over that way too early. Next season rankings. We'll be the worst. They're always bad. They're going to be the worst and least accurate ever because we don't even know what these teams are going to look like. So i'm asking people to just take a breath and realized that team's gonna drastic now. We don't like taking the team if the team is. The team is worse than then. There's a problem but until that team is still out. The team might get better. Missouri could get better with adding four to five transfers season. They certainly should be more athletic than they were last season. So i'm not ready to panic it but my god. It's going to be a mess for college basketball you not. Nb i do not envy these coaches. This year i'd take. I would take most of their salaries but But i would not. I would not want the headaches. It's gonna be a tough tough year for the mental sanity of college basketball coaches.
