You know, Hoffman, you know, there's been some guys have done that, Um But you know, it's still the fact that that you know velocity. If Major league hitters know you throw hard that doesn't intimidate them anymore. Like it used to. They don't try to catch up. They've learned how to time it and And I'll go back to Doc Edwards, who I coach for with the Indians for a number of years, and he used to say a major league hitter can time a bullet if he sees enough of them, And that is not. That is more true now than when he said it like 30 years ago. Final question about this because they'll hear Broadcasters like myself, say it, they they hear people like you talk about it, but basic definitions here. What's the difference between control? And command. Well control his ability throw strike. It's it's based on, you know, walks per inning, which means you can get your style. You know, you generally throw strikes. You get it in the strike zone. It doesn't say anything about the quality of the pitch. He doesn't say where the strike zone is going to be. So you have ability, throw strikes, which is really good, And it's important at a young age because you build command from their command is in and out of the strike zone. So what do you want to throw a pitch out of the strike zone attempt a guy or to set up another pitch? You have the ability to do that. So it's it's everyone's while you see a guy, especially when they used to have a lot of soft lefties. They had better command and control. Everybody goes. How could that be? Because they threw balls on purpose. So you'd throw as many strikes as they could have if they wanted to, but because of their stuff and the way they use their arsenal They could locate pictures in and out of the strike zone to be effective, And once in a while, it happens Where they you go guy. "Now on Colorado's Morning News, the Rockies hosting this year's Major League Baseball All Star game, you'll want to see familiar faces as part of the Midsummer Classic. Man. Marquez is on the NL roster cover story set to compete in the home run Derby, a manager But Black can be on the National League coaching staff right now, looking at the midseason report card for the Rockies, and, of course, the All Star out. Look at it well with the Voice of the Rockies. Jack Corrigan, Jack. Good morning. Good morning, Marty. So I want to start with this The last night listening to your call. I hear the disappointment in your voice and your like, geez, not another struggle on the road when a game that the Rockies had a chance to win. Yeah, it um You know, I've been doing this for a long time. And you know good teams teams with tougher years. This is this is different. Because until watch a team plays so well at home, and then I have so many different things happen to them on the road. I mean, there are explanations for it. But to this level, it's a real head scratcher. Jack. I don't know if anybody is expecting the Rockies to win the World Series. I think that's fair, especially with this being kind of a transition year and the Nolan stuff and all that, but Six and 32 on the road. You've called baseball a long, long time. Have you ever seen anything like this? Um, no. I mean, I've you know, I've covered. Uh, several teams that have lost, um, triple digits. So I mean, I've seen teams that Really have had issues. Um, but not like this. I mean, like I said, there are there are some You know things you can point to and say the reason but usually not. Not that not that they continue to to this level. That's the That's the surprising thing. You know, they'll We'll get pitching and not hit that day. They'll get hitting and and not pitch well enough for you know, they'll have some freakish thing happened. Like last night. Um and you know, with baseball like Bud says, you just You start up the next day and again, you say Okay, Well, now we're going to win a bunch of road games. They just have to start doing it. That's all one more question about the current state of the Rockies, and we'll talk a little lost our game. But if you had to give the midseason report card right now, for the Rockies, your grade would be Um, probably the incomplete in that, I think, as as BK said, a little bit of, um, transition going on this year and young guys having Chances to play are are starting to show some things, but you know not to the level of where they want to be, and I think it's going to be a very important second half. To evaluate what they're going to be doing, whether they make some trades at the trade deadline or other things that are going to happen. I don't know that you can give them a great other than incomplete at this point. All right. So with the All Star game coming to town, it wasn't a lot of lead up time. Like you would normally get how ready is course field and can you feel the buzz when you're down there I know is obviously a great weekend series with the Cardinals felt like I think I've even heard you say a playoff atmosphere. Yeah. I mean, it'll be a fun week. Give the Rockies credit, you know, for Greg Diesel and all the people on that side of the Rockies operation, um They They obviously had plans in place because they were going to be hosting an all Star game around this time, But to essentially do this and the 12 13 weeks that they had is really a Herculean effort. And I think, um, come this weekend as events start to take place right through the All Star game next Tuesday. I think it's going to show off course Field and the Rockies organization, the city of Denver State of Colorado in a great light. I think it's going to be terrific. I think it is too. And I just want to make one final point. I think you'd agree with this. I think this whole canard That you can't pitch. Of course Field, Airman Marquez is showing. Oh yeah, I can pitch a Coors Field and And the fact that he was named to the All Star Game as a picture from the Rockies essay is pretty darn remarkable. Yeah, well, you know, Marty, they have a chance. Certainly The starters can stay healthy the rest of the year to pitch as well as a group in the history of the franchise. So, yeah, you know, I give Bud black a lot of credit, along with You know Steve Foster and the other people who have been pitching coaches for the for the ball club they have, you know, assembled the kinds of pictures and developed an attitude that That really says, you know, go ahead and say we can't and we're going to show you that we can and you know whether it's airman or it's Kyle Friedland. Or, you know John Gray. You can you can see that. They relished that challenge, and they've done a great job with it. At Coors Field in his career, but the the weather took that away so Actually, the first time the fans here are going to see Nolan will be when he starts to loosen up before the game gets going. I think what Bud told you is really appropriate and spot on. It's weird. It won't be as we're down the road, maybe even by Sunday, assuming Nolan plays and Everybody is able to get used to the idea of these. The fans here that he's no longer with the Rockies. When he was their teammate. But here we are getting ready to play a game 82 of this 2021 season for the Rockies. So they've played 81 games without him good or bad in terms of the outcomes, and if you don't move on, you're just making things worse and you're spending. You're wasting energy on something that's out of your control and isn't going to change anyway. And there's a Lot of the Rockies. I like what Garrett Hampson said last night. There's a lot of guys on this club that are trying to establish themselves. They've got to carve out their own careers and contribute to the 2021 Rockies. And again. It sounds callous because it makes it seem like well, Nolan's gone out of sight out of mind. But as a ballplayer, that's the way those guys think when it comes to The task at hand for them, which is trying to win each and every day for the Rockies. It wouldn't be any different than if there had been a season ending injury or a career ending injury. Or retirement. The game goes on, and you need to do so with it. "Jack Corrigan with you and we're visiting with Doug Bernier, who does a lot of data and game planning of for the Rockies. In the first segment we talked about Some of that and Doug's connection into the game. Doug was a non drafted free agent by the Rockies and got his first taste of the big leagues in Rocky's Purple. Take us back to growing up in in California, Doug and how baseball grabbed a hold of you. Yeah, I love baseball since I was little. I mean, I played three sports growing up football, baseball, basketball, um and and really, just really loved it. I mean, played on a good high school team went to a junior college out in San Luis Obispo spoke for two years before I transferred out Oral Roberts in Tulsa. Oklahoma, actually got a chance to play against spill E. A few times over there in Santa Barbara when we were in high school, so I knew him for I've known him for quite a while. And then, after my two years at all, Roberts wasn't drafted and then a couple days after the draft, I got a call from the Rockies. Asked if I wanted to sign is a non drafted free agent. And I guess kind of knowing what I know. Now. I think it's a little naive going into it, but knowing that usually non drafted guys don't stick around very long, but was fortunate to, you know, kind of Claude Hang around a little bit. Got to the big leagues with the Rockies in Oh, eight. And, you know, played for 16 years. So it's very, very fortunate. You know, one of the things about that Doug and I know I'm preaching to the choir a little bit in in that regard, But, you know, I tell people you can take all the guys who have played at least one inning in a major league uniform, and they would fit in the seats at the ball arena here in downtown Denver, you know, so To even go as the number one pick to the big leagues, much less a non drafted free agent. When you made that debut and wait with the Rockies, it had to be almost surreal moment. Oh, it was it was unbelievable. I mean, just just like it was cool. I remember just coming into the clubhouse for the first time in the first person I saw was Todd Helton and he can't. He came and gave me a hug and said, Hey, Doug, you know, I'm glad to see you here and Um, he went in. He actually went into Clint Hurdle's office and told Clinton like, Hey, we got to get Doug's start, You know, And so it just It was cool just to see the support when I got there, Um, you know, and it was. It was a lifelong dream. I mean, standing out on a big league field looking around, Remember just taking a moment to take it all in just not knowing if this was ever going to happen again. And just being really grateful for that opportunity, because I remember going to games as a kid, just seeing the green grass and like, man, this is this is where I want to play one day and then actually being able to accomplish. That was just, you know, I was just extremely grateful. So in that process, Duggan and in our next segment, I'm going to focus in on it a little bit more. But in that process for that, that young man who has some dreams, whether it's in little league or to the high school level. To, uh be, you know the aspirations to be a big leaguer. But, you know, I go back to what you kind of set off hand. But I think is still quite valuable. You played multiple sports in high school. It's obvious that it wasn't just Hey, I've got to do this to have Any chance I got to spend all my time with baseball. I would think your athletic versatility out of playing multiple sports probably help you on that climb to the big leaks. Absolutely. I mean, I believe baseball is the skill specific sport. And if you're just playing baseball all the time, you don't really become super Athletic. Yeah. You become very, um, skilled in baseball, but you don't really gain that athleticism. So I mean, you know, playing tennis playing soccer, basketball, football. All that stuff kind of helps build that. The the, uh, athletic Athleticism base that you can use for baseball, and it starts to come out when you're playing the game. And so I mean, I know I might be a little old school when it comes to that. But I'm a huge fan in playing multiple sports. I think I think it can only benefit you. Yeah, I I look at just for example, the number of guys On the current major league roster for the Rockies. A kid like Ryan McMahon, for example, really good high school football player. He kind of downplays it a little bit, but you know that's all part of the process, Give your body a baseball rest and and maybe hone some of your other athleticism. As you said. Exactly and not only a physical rest, also a mental rest. I mean, it's tough after a season just I mean, I feel like just baseball is a mental grind. It's a game of failure, right? I always felt like if I was thinking about it the entire year, and it would it would kind of take its toll after a while, so just getting away from baseball for a couple months. Get my mind on something else and then coming back to it. I felt kind of re energize once baseball season came around again. Well, we are visiting with the Iraqis. Front office, uh, kind of a little bit of everything. But doing a lot of the data and game planning for the Big League Club That is Doug Bernier, Former Big leaguer. We're going to talk a little bit more with dog about. The the development, the development the young players need in the game and some of the things that he has done in the past that maybe we'll put youngsters in the proper path to reach their baseball dream.

Emotion is not always good in sport. Hey, is not always good. But in the biggest moments you need to make sure everybody is fully engaged. And some people need that guy. To be the best player on that team. Almost team When the best player on the team is an emotional guy that can get Rev you up. It's the best thing for the team. But I'll give an example where the best player is not that guy. And it seems to work the Golden State Warriors. Okay, clearly, Draymond Green is that guy for that team? He's clearly the guy. He's not the best player, but he's a guy who was a vocal leader of the team and gets everybody going well, he does, And he does show the most emotion, which most of the time isn't the good emotion right? It's it's emotionally get you in trouble, but don't you but women, But don't you think Steph Curry still carries himself as the leader of that so no, he's not that guy. See, I kind of disagree with you on that. I think that he thinks that he's the most talented guy clearly the most talented guy on the team. It will be the most talented guy on almost every team minus maybe one or two. So he is. He's an immensely talented guy, but he's not an emotional guy. You know, it's just, uh I'm like. I like Like teams where The best player is the Alfa and he is the guy who is the inspiration as well. You could be the Alfa and be quiet. I don't like that. It's just something's just missing there. You just need firing in athletics. Yeah, but there's a difference between Steph Curry. And quite Leonard. Look, Steph Curry. He plays here now. I think it's a great place to place my personality wise, I think placing player he plays with swag. He's emotional. He definitely does a little bit of taunting. He does a little bit of tension as well. I think quite doesn't have any of that. I'm just saying, but I think when you when you think about Steph Playing basketball. Hey, you know, 20 games ago, you start saying Oh, man, this is the guy and then you know, 10 games ago, It was clearly put out there that he's the odds on favorite to win. But I'm just telling you that it didn't. I didn't leave the bubble, saying that Guy's the league's M V P Did you know I didn't leave the bubble feeling that way. I felt that way. You could say that way, Murray. Yeah, but I felt that way. The first two months into this this this season.
