Some of it was fun, some of it was terrible. I have some funny stories for you, and I can't wait to make fun of the New England Patriots, because they deserve it. God bless them. Six Super Bowls, I love those guys, but man, this has been the season from hell. We're gonna talk about it with the Cuz next. First, our friends from Pearl Jam. ["Bend the Boat"] All right, we're taping this a little after 8.30 on Sunday night. Cousin Sal is here, just watched a ridiculous day of football. I got COVID on Tuesday night, and I did a double podcast on Tuesday, and I wasn't feeling great Tuesday night with Mahoney, and I was like, oh man, jet lag. And then the next day I felt worse. I've had COVID all week, so I found out I had COVID on Wednesday, but I really had it probably since Tuesday. The Lions killed me on Thursday morning. They killed like three different teases, had to rally back, crawl back, felt like crap, weird holiday, and then it all culminates with the Ravens. I need them to win minus three, have them tied to a bunch of bets, and they just put us through the torture chamber. Never again, Sal, never again. First of all, I know you had COVID, very COVID Thanksgiving. It's a great Charlie Brown special if you ever get around to watching it. But yeah, there was a lot of football, and you were so incensed that I couldn't even tell who you bet tonight. You were dropping F bombs. I think like when the Sunday night game gets started, we're on like two or three chains, and you're like, F the fact they did Stanley this and Harbaugh that, and I was like, wow, I don't even know who to root for. I don't really have anything. I was so mad at Harbaugh. They got four Chargers turnovers, and the Chargers couldn't convert a fourth out in the fourth quarter, and they're still sweating it out. And it's a game that should have been over. They should have been up 20. We should have been talking about what's gonna happen with Stanley tomorrow, all this stuff, and meanwhile, they're hanging around, hanging around, hanging around. But this is what the Ravens, this is what they do. They play dumb games. The Chargers play the dumbest games ever, and then somehow, our guy Collinsworth, who we tease every week but we really love, and you don't really know how much you love somebody until they're gone, and he's gone tonight. I don't know what happened. He's hanging out with his family, and they give us Jason Garrett with Mike Tirico for three hours, and he's spouting out cliches like he has a T-shirt gun, and he's firing them into different sections of the crowd. Momentum, and oh, you gotta trick the defense. It was the worst, and I had the Ravens, by the way, I was going nuts. That's why I was so angry, Sal. First of all, I know, Stanley, Harbaugh, Jason Garrett, we may never top that combination. Is that the New Bermuda Triangle? Yeah, it's pretty bad. It's pretty fucking bad. I didn't, I was like, oh, and I was mad about that Eagles game as a Cowboys fan, and then I go in, and I see that, yeah, you're right, Chris Collinsworth's spending time with his family, even though Jack Collinsworth's there, so I'm not sure how that worked. But I'm like, I can't listen to Jason Garrett. I listened for like 12 minutes, and then I had the sound down the whole time, because I was like, this is guy, I was like, all right, maybe it's me. Maybe I'll give him a break, and then he's like, he has this weird thing where he laughs at his own shit, and it's meant to be funny. He's like, oh, that play reminded me of Dwight Freaney. Remember him? And then Torrico's stuck, because he doesn't know if there's a follow-up or if he should jump in. Like, how about the Jets on Friday? You didn't say anything funny there. I mean, you're a simpleton, and I dealt with this at my Thanksgiving table with my uncle, so I don't wanna do it again for three hours. So yeah, I turned it off. I didn't wanna be in a bad mood for this podcast. You had a different plan, I think. Well, at the end of the game, it's wrapping up, and Garrett, I think he had been sitting on this point all day. It was his best point, where he said, it was something like, you know, the Ravens, they're seven and two in one-score games, and you know what I've noticed is the record in one-score games ends up making the difference, and whether you have a good season or a bad season, and there was just dead silence from Tariqo for a split second as he tried to figure out where to go with that one. Oh, so you're saying one-score games are important during a regular season, Jason? He's learned a lot. It was so bad. Herbert blew another fourth quarter with the ball in his hands, and there, as always, there's excuses. You know, he didn't have Mike Williams. They're double-teaming Keenan Allen, but it's gotten to the point where I don't think he's gonna come through, and I think he's the talented quarterback, but I've never seen more of a schism between the nerds telling us how good he is and how great he is when you watch the All-22, and then when I'm just watching a game and I'm betting against him, I'm like, I'm not that nervous. He's not gonna come through. I'm ready to, nerds be damned. I'm ready to move him out of my top six, I think. I think I am, too. Right? Like, we do cross-offs all the time. We could move him out. How many times do we have to see the same game over and over? And that's like, I was initially, I was like, all right, don't worry about the Ravens. They're going against the Chargers. If it's anyone else, you should be concerned, but the Chargers are gonna do their thing at the end, and they sure did. Anyone with plus nine on a teaser there, boy, did they bite it there. I mean, they probably could have lost by 20. You're right, but I'm sick of these excuses. I mean, there are teams with, you know, with Colts put up points, and I don't know. I look with bad, yeah, with bad receivers, too. We mentioned that. Who else? What other teams, like, just continue to score? The Texans have managed to score points every week. Yeah, yeah, Tank Dell can't be, yeah. I mean, he's got seven touchdowns, eight touchdowns this year. Give me a break. The Raiders were moving the ball on offense.

"Derek Henry and who's the other guy Hilliard? Yeah. Just big boy, the Texans. It was rough. That might have been the best he looked in a long, like, oh my God. Right? Like a top three game for Derek Henry. And it's cold yet. That was high school football, Derek Henry. This isn't fair. They're in the wrong division. Yeah, I have I had the Texans is one of the losers because they're clearly the worst team in the league now. They were hopeless against them. I had the Lafleur family tough day for them. Jets offensive coordinator and Green Bay. That was a loser. Good call. NBC trotted out 5 white guys in a row in the pregame show at one point, which I don't think has been done since 1970 one. They had random white guy host with Chris Simms and who's the other white guy. Well, as long as Jason Garrett's one of them. Jason Garrett, the always going to be the loser. Then they threw it to the field, but Jack collinsworth and Matthew barris. This has to be record. The 5 white guys in a row. We haven't seen that since I don't know, Jimmy and the Greek was like smoking cigarettes on there. Zeke Elliott, I think, was the loser today. How does it get a job? Yeah, I get it. And I think Pollard should be the main guy anyway, but I don't know. I read a lot on the cowboys and they're down on that that doesn't matter today, but they're down on Polish blocking ability and Zeke is supposed to shine when it comes to that. So yeah, look, I'm happy with that offense. Definitely happy with 6 and two. Going on to a buy when my quarterback was looking good. Most of those games, I'll take that. I would have taken that before this season. Panthers 35 to one when they enter south. A little more. It's just a tiny bit more. Minnesota's -8 50 in the NFC north. The Philly one's fun. Minus three 70 plus 400 and 13 to one for the Giants. Four to one. Why not take the you don't like the cowboy? I know they're one and a half out, but they play the eagles again. I think we're just as good enough. I agree with you. Four to one seems a little high to me. The other one I was looking at was the Bengals, there's been a chase overreaction where they're plus two ten now. They beat the browns tomorrow. I think they could easily take that. Well, here's the problem. The ravens is a Raven schedule as you wait for Jamar chase to get back. At saints versus panthers who I know you love at Jaguars versus Broncos. That's an easiest. They should go through that month. Good

"Look, I've been told this is kind of obvious. It's a higher. There's somebody very high up who really likes Jack collinsworth. The issue that we haven't mentioned is he's Chris Collins or its son, who's been a longtime analyst on Sunday Night football, Jack is on Sunday Night football as host and reporter. And so there's a couple of things on that. So people get people love to throw the word nepotism at someone, and that's circumstance. I personally don't have a problem with Jack collinsworth getting the job, right? I don't think it should get you the job your last name. It also should not exclude you from getting the job. So they very well should hire Jack collinsworth and I'd even argue that it's a huge advantage to have a parent who has been in the business for as long as Chris has been that you are around it. You understand it better. You have more knowledge about the game, so that's a lot of advantages that Jack Collins were the hats. That said, when you're 27 years old and you get the Notre-Dame job over a lot of veteran broadcasters who could have gotten this job, then you need to really excel. So like Joe buck is always the one that everyone loves to point to, right? People still, even now, he goes to ESPN. He's been doing it for more than a quarter century. He'll be like, nepotism. Nepotism gets you an internship. You don't get to do the World Series of Super Bowl or no trading. So, but when you get that opportunity, you need to be up at the level. And in my opinion, these game one Jack was not there. I agree with you on everything you said about the nepotism. And I don't have a problem with him getting the job he's a collinsworth. That's not my issue. I think my issue, I know he did. My issue is, what's your play by play background? I know he did USFL. Nobody cares. Sorry, I'm not trying to be mean. If he would have done the, you know, fourth SEC game for ESPN for two years. You know, in one of those booths, then I couldn't care less what his last name is. I would feel like, okay, there's some play by play. You do the USL for a year and then you get the Nord game job. It's a very bizarre jump. That's my only. Well, I don't begrudge them. I'm just saying it's a bizarre leap to go from one year of USFL to do Notre-Dame. That's all. I don't think that NBC is doing Jack collinsworth any favors with the movie. Right, right? Like, it seems like, oh, wow, that's great. But look, he might get better. You know, they might say, you know what? We're sticking with Jack Collin. He's a Notre-Dame guy. Maybe some of you know what your name, so you know that could be he is a Notre-Dame guy.

"You mentioned your post plus newsletter and we're talking college football. I know you wrote about the NBC Notre-Dame booth of Jack Collins and Jason Garrett. Now, I was a bad media writer because I didn't listen to them at all. I can't sit there on a Saturday afternoon at three 30 and listen to the telecast of Notre-Dame Marshall. I had it on one of my TVs with no sound because I had bet Marshall. Thank you, Kirk, herb street, who picked them on game day. I didn't pick them, but said that they were going to give no. It was actually the market in Oregon called the week for that. So I bet Marshall just based on herb street, they were on one of my TVs with no sound. So I didn't hear the telecast at all. What was the issue there? And then we'll get into like, it's a weird hire, I think. But first, tell me what the issue was. The biggest issue was lack of command for that job, okay? So you look at Notre-Dame and NBC. That's the big leagues, right? That's not a place where you're trying to improve or you're trying to get better. That's where you're at the top of your field. You're one of the top, the NFL, there's what 12 play by player, maybe 14 play by players, you know, college and other top 30 play by players in the country. And I think NBC has to say, is Jack collinsworth 27 years old and see one of the top 30 play by players in the country. I think when you're listening to game one, yeah, I don't think he sounded that way. Can he improve? Yeah, maybe. But it's just a hard place to try to improve. And so the big thing would be if you go listen to the big calls, they just lacking that emphasis. It's not, it wasn't that second nature that comes from doing a million games. Which she hasn't done. And so that's why I wrote what I did. And I thought it was very fair.

"Previewing the NFL season with Chris collinsworth lead game analyst for NBC Sunday Night football. He'll be on the call along with Mike tirico to kick off the season on Thursday, September 8th for the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams. And on top of doing Sunday Night football for NBC, Chris is also a majority owner of pro football focus, or PFF, which has become one of the best known NFL analytics companies. And Damien, we were talking about his app and how many fantasy football fans can't live without. Yeah, you really can't, you really can't play fantasy with that access to PFF. I mean, Chris, you have four children. You know, your son Austin was a former football player, team captain at Notre-Dame. Your other son Jack also attended Notre-Dame and he's become a broadcaster, right? I believe he's back at NBC covering Notre-Dame football. I mean, have you ever had the opportunity to work on air with your 27 year old son Jack and do you have any plans to do so? We sound so much alike that people would have no idea which one was which if we ever did a game together. So I've been told repeatedly any thoughts you may have that one day you're going to work with Jack. You can just forget about it. We're excited around here. Yeah, so Notre-Dame opens up with a phenomenal game against Ohio State. Unfortunately, that one's not on NBC. But because it's at Ohio State, but they come back and week two and play Marshall and that will be the world debut for one Jack collinsworth working with Jason Garrett and calling the Notre-Dame games. So yeah, we're a little pumped about that. I love that. We're going to look forward to that. I have a question for you that that's more bigger picture and something that I've always been curious about. Whenever we look at football clubs or any sports franchise for that matter, the NFL clubs are always on top, right? Because we know that this is the sport that everyone gets excited about. And all the other leads are emulating. But when I look at the most valuable franchise in the NFL, it's the Dallas Cowboys. Why is that when the team hasn't won a Super Bowl since the mid 90s? What makes it so valuable? Yeah, well, a lot of things go into that valuation too, right? The stadium that they build. It's the ownership of the parking. It's the practice facility. I mean, they basically build an entire city around their practice facility. The star and as much money as Jerry has made off of the football team and off of building the stadium, I've heard that the money that he's made off of owning everything around this practice facility is like the biggest thing he's ever made money on. And having been on his yacht a couple of times. I might be prone to believe that to be true. But the Dallas Cowboys for better for horse, I can't always explain it, but if you gave NPC the option of any game that we could call every single week of the season. I think the numbers would still tell you that if you did nothing but cowboys games, you would have the highest rating. Interesting. Yeah, it's unbelievable because of exactly some of the things that you just said. They have not been in the Super Bowl in a long time. They've not won a Super Bowl in a long time. But in part, because of Jerry and part because of a generation of people that are football fans today who grew up watching Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin, when those three championships, we still have so many cowboy fans around the country and even those who hate the Dallas Cowboys. Guess what? They tune in to watch them get beat every week. He's watching. Yeah. I mean, it works for us both ways. So whatever reason you tune in, we're just happy you're there. I gotta talk to you about the booth. If this is the first season in a while, where Al Michaels will not be your partner, Al Michaels went on to Amazon, but Mike tarika will be there. It's kind of like, okay, I'm gonna trade this bar gold for this bar of gold, but you're gonna, it's gonna be a great season for you guys. Talk about that though about Al Michaels and the change to Mike tirico. Yeah, I mean, Mike tirico was signed a long time ago and to be the eventual replacement for Al Michaels, right? Unfortunately, nobody had told Al Michaels. It is current age, and I won't give that away. He's still be great. I mean, Al Michaels called the Super Bowl last year and was so fantastic. All season long, it's just a remarkable human being. I've been around Al for a long, long time now. We're the best of Friends. And I have never met a human being with the memory that that man has. So I go all week and I take all these notes and I watch all these films and write it all down and I have 50 pages of notes that I do the best that I can to try and cram in this peanut brain of mine and have some retention for on game day. I'll takes it on Saturday morning. I hand it to him. He reads all 50 pages. And I swear he knows it better than I do. I don't know any human being like, I truly don't. He's an amazing guy with what he can retain. And of course, the fact that he's been at every major memorable sporting event over the last 50 years leads to some incredible relationships and stories. And so yeah, Mike takes over and Al moves on to Amazon and he'll work with Kirk Harvey street over there and they're going to be fantastic for the first ever sort of digital broadcast. But lucky me, I get my trico who's already done dozens of years of prime time television. So it's pretty amazing. You can move from Al Michaels right to Mike tariko and free blessed to be able to do that. You know, Chris, I mean, look, every year, there are always these players who massively outperform their pre season expectations. I mean, you're a PFF. Who is this year's Cooper Cup? And Chris, if you know, don't tell him because I'm in the same league as he is. And we're both drafting what? Next week. Chris, you can tell me because I'm not in their league. And I will maybe share this. Well, since you guys are whispering PFF anyway, I'll just whisper a couple of them to you here. But yeah, I think the one that probably comes to mind first of all is Christian McCaffrey. That's

Guess what? They tune in to watch them get beat everywhere. Yeah. I mean, it works for us, both ways. So whatever reason you tune in, we're just happy you're there. I got to talk to you about the booth. If this is the first season in a while, where Al Michaels will not be your partner, Al Michaels went on to Amazon, but Mike tirico will be there. It's kind of like, okay, I'm going to trade this bar gold for this bar of gold, but you're going to, it's going to be a great season for you guys. Talk about that though, about Al Michaels and the change to Mike tirico. Yeah, I mean, Mike tirico was signed a long time ago and to be the eventual replacement for Al Michaels, right? Unfortunately, nobody had told Michael. I don't know any human being like I truly don't. He's an amazing guy with what he can retain and of course the fact that he's been at every major memorable sporting event over the last 50 years leads to some incredible relationships and stories. And so yeah, Mike takes over and Al moves on to Amazon and he'll work with Kirk herb street over there and they're going to be fantastic. For the first ever sort of digital broadcast. But lucky me, I get my trico who's already done dozens of years of prime time television. So it's pretty amazing, really. You can move from Al Michaels right to Mike tariko and pretty blessed to be able to do that. You know, Chris, I mean, look, every year, there are always these players who massively outperform their present pre season expectations. I mean, you're a PFF. Who is this year's Cooper Cup? And Chris, if you know, don't tell him because I'm in the same league as he is. And we're both drafting what next week. You can tell me because I'm not in their league. And I will maybe share that. Well, since you guys are whispering PFF anyway, I'll just whisper a couple of them to you here. But yeah, I think the one that probably comes to mind first of all is Christian McCaffrey. That's

"Radio. Now, a global news update Serena Williams is looking to extend her stay at the U.S. open tonight. The tournament in New York figures to be the last for the 40 year old Williams who's expected to retire afterwards. Her matches have become must see events as celebs and fans have been flocking to center court. More than 13 million people are expected to pass through U.S. airports this Labor Day weekend. The TSA is urging travelers to arrive at least 90 minutes ahead of their scheduled flight time. They're also cautioning passengers to exercise patience in case of flight delays. The G 7 is agreeing to a price cap on Russian oil, treasury secretary Janet Yellen talked about the agreement. Our objective since day one has been to deprive Putin and Russia of the revenues they need to conduct this war. The Treasury Department sent out a statement from the group of advanced global economies confirming the cap. I'm Brian shook. Your listening to Bloomberg business of sports from Bloomberg radio. This is the Bloomberg business of sports show where we explore the big money issues in the world of sports on Michael Barr along with scarlet fu and Damien sass sour. We are previewing the NFL season with Chris collinsworth lead game analyst for NBC Sunday Night football. He'll be on the call along with Mike tirico to kick off the season on Thursday, September 8th for the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams. And on top of doing Sunday Night football for NBC, Chris is also a majority owner of pro football focus. Which has become one of the best known NFL analytics companies. We sound so much alike. That people would have no idea which one was which if we ever did a game together. Because we know that this is the sport that everyone gets excited about and all the other leaves are emulating. I mean, they basically build an entire city around their practice facility, the star and as much money as Jerry has made off of the football team and off of building the stadium. I've heard that the money that he's made off of owning everything around this practice facility is like the biggest thing he's ever made money on. And having been on his yacht a couple of times. I might be prone to believe that's meant to be true. So but the Dallas Cowboys for better for horse, I can't always explain it, but if you gave NPC the option of any game that we could call every single week of the season. I think the numbers would still tell you that if you did nothing but cowboys games, you would have the highest rating. Interesting. "Yeah. And that's radio row for a week. And the funny thing is in the pre Twitter era, this worked because in Dallas, for instance, they'd be like, wow, you know, the Dallas radio station got Eric Dickerson or got Justin. This is awesome. Right. And it would kind of confer upon the local guy. Oh, yeah, you're getting really the big name guests. Never mind you don't know that Eric Dickerson also just didn't New Orleans the national and everything else. It's funny. You mentioned the guy Christian McCaffrey. He's a big radio guy. And I think there was a Super Bowl where he couldn't get into radio row. Like he didn't have his credential and they wouldn't let him in, which is actually pretty amazing. There's also this whole and I won't put Christian McCaffrey quite in there yet because he's still pretty young, but there's this whole class of NFL athlete often quarterbacks who become the eternal radio row guy because they never make the Super Bowl so they're never busy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I remember I got weirdly Kirk Cousins was there a couple years ago. And I was kind of like, you know, just looking for notes for that radio row piece. And I went and talked to the people who were handling Kirk Cousins just to get some material. And then I remember this woman running across the convention center and go, oh, I got you, Kirk Cousins tomorrow. And I was like, I'm thinking like, I don't think I want Kirk Cousins. Nothing to ask her cousins. And then she really was and I kind of said, oh, we'll get back to you. And no, no, we got you down. And so I showed up and I had this incredibly stilted conversation with Kirk Cousins where I finally asked him what's it like to be on radio road journey? He said, you know, I really love to be the Super Bowl. Yeah, I mean, that's a thing. If you don't make the Super Bowl, I would think you'd want to be a home relaxing or wallowing and not making the Super Bowl, not a radio. A lot of money, though. It's a lot of money to do a couple hours of interviews. One other thing on the Super Bowl going back to the broadcast. The MBC pregame show this year starts at noon. That's got to be the earliest ever if I'm not mistaken. Are we sure about that? And has a premium show ever started earlier than noon on Super Bowl Sunday? I don't put it past. I feel like when we in the last 20 years, there's been a there's been a press release that went out that said a super sized pregame show. The longest ever. Let me see has enough people where they need to start it. Don't you love how they do that thing where they throw down where they do the questions in the studio with Tony dungy and then they throw it down to the field with Jack collinsworth and like Rodney Harrison they do the same questions. And I'm like, no, I just heard I just heard this..
