"And then showed up and voted for glenn yung-chen on tuesday night Do you have any other thoughts on what changed between twenty seventeen twenty twenty an tuesday nights results. Well i mean it is not unusual for the party out of power to do very well midterm elections. That is what normally happens. And i think it's also fair. Say that if you were to pick time in twenty twenty one they would be the worst time to have this election. Probably right now. Which is congress has wrapped still has not delivered yet on legislative agenda. It's just been a giant for a long time. Schools have just opened. Parents are still navigating the challenges of going to school. Their kids to school vaccines for kids have not yet started. Inflation is hitting pandemic pessimism is receding but not receding fast enough so like the worst of all worlds right in this moment combined with the historical bounceback for the party out of power. And you end up with something like this now. It's with that that is not to say that this is not a giant fucking warning sign because this is virginia this is a state that was noncompetitive. And two thousand and sixteen thousand and twenty. We won easily in two thousand seventeen and two thousand in one thousand nine hundred in the state legislative level and we just lost and were all the other stuff aside. There's something bigger here that we have to address in. Look all right. Let's get to what everyone is calmly debating online with the kind of humility that comes with an unexpected loss. Why democrats lost virginia. So i thought we would go through each each big beautiful. Take one at a time. And then you. I can offer the unassailable correct answer of. That's not that's onscreen. I want to stipulate that the answer. We're gonna address all of these. The answer is all of the above. It's just a question of what percentage each of them are. We'll see we'll see okay. I knew i might throw my lodden with one of these. Take stan okay. number one. The party that holds the white house almost always loses off your gubernatorial races. You just touched on this. What do you think that is true. But it's not always true and we did win in two thousand thirteen when right after obama had been reelected. That's that's a former governor. Terry mcauliffe is proof that you can win gubernatorial elections in an off year so it explains some but it doesn't explain everything just chalking it up is just sort of the natural Occurrences of history is sort of excuse making and not looking at the problem. We need to solve two problems. I have with that explanation. One is. Virginia and new jersey have gotten bluer every election cycle so they are much bluer than they were when we've lost them in past off your cycles in two and this is maybe the more important one. When democrats lost the virginia governorship and the new jersey governorship in two thousand and nine a year. After obama won. Virginia and new jersey obama then went on to lose the democrats then went onto lose sixty three house seats in twenty ten. So the history of what happens next is pretty grim so we can all comfort ourselves by being like all. This always happens enough elections. Yeah it always happens your elections and then you know what happens in the midterms fucking catastrophe. So it's not it is not something to comfort yourself with that. This always happens enough your elections because the history is also that the party out of power doesn't necessarily bounce back in the midterms number two. Terry mcauliffe was a bad candidate. Who ran a bad campaign where all he talked about was donald trump. This one is a little more complicated. Because i think there are plenty of completely fair. Critiques about mcauliffe's campaigns. Reggie and one is. He ran a campaign strategy with focus on trump. That was sort of borne of spending too much time online. The if you're someone who is not on twitter crew does not watch cable. News does not listen to podcasts. Or not a political junkie you have probably not thought about. Donald trump wants in months. He is so absent from her life. He's not on the news he's not on facebook. He's not on twitter. You unless you are someone who lives inside progressive media or you live inside far-right media. You don't see trump. you don't hear anything about it. so when mcauliffe's running around saying he's donald trump donald trump donald trump. You have no idea what he's it's so removed from your life. I think it's also fair to say that while on paper at the outset. Mccall very strong in it. He was a successful former governor. Who had governed in run in the mold of joe biden. Who had just won the state by ten points less than a year ago. But as a former governor he was the embodiment of the status quo. Particularly in state democrats have controlled the governorship for sixteen of the last twenty years at a time in which people are very angry and so any changed status quo election. We pick sort of the embodiment. You can't get any more of a vitamin status quo with a challenge with an open seat non incumbent candidate terry mcauliffe has all the all the downsides of income and see none of the upsides but that aside. That doesn't explain anything about phil murphy or any of the other candidates and so the thing we have to recognize this sure we can nitpick some of the decisions for mcaulifee but i think they're sort of ancillary to the larger political trends here and if we focus on how we fix the problems of mccall's campaign strategy were all in tactics were all in symptoms not in disease. And so yeah. It's all true. But i don't think that maybe a better campaign actually might have eke this out but the larger political problems still exists whether mcauliffe wins by one or loses by two same problem exists that is devastating and much less blue states. They're going to control the house. And the senate. Yeah my big response to that. Is phil murphy. Phil murphy phil murphy. Right this is. This is one of the most progressive governors in the country. Phil murphy new jersey. He has passed in his first term. A fifteen dollars minimum wage new taxes on millionaires legal weed..

"Theory ideas are failing of the democratic party. And they just don't have a whole lot of ideas of how to proceed because the people who should come up with those ideas the brain trust are the ones who caused the problem. Dan balls is The the chief political correspondent for washington post. He's kind of the dean of the washington political press corps. He's been there forever. Let me just read you. Some of what he wrote. Democrats awoke wednesday to a sobering reality year. After celebrating victory in the twenty twenty elections their slender congressional majorities are now even more at risk than they feared and it is not clear that president by nor his party have a workable plan to rebalance a political landscape tilting significantly against them republic. Glenn junkins victory over. Democrat terry mcauliffe. Virginia's gubernatorial election was not a total surprise nervous. Democrats could since it coming for weeks but the full impact of the loss in a state. That biden won by ten points twelve months ago along with a far closer gubernatorial race than anyone expected in new jersey which bide one by sixteen points triggered alarms across the party. Next year the entire democratic party will face the voters with republicans. More confident than ever. Did they have the issues whether education inflation or the border as well as the strategy in a strong tailwind to drive democrats from power in the house and senate and thereby short circuit the final two years of biden's term office how quickly democrats absorb tuesday's results and begin to respond will determine how well they can hold down expected losses in the coming midterms. It is always the case that too much can be read into the results of elections. Maybe it was just the pattern of history in virginia which for decades has seen the party that holds the white house. lose the governorship. Because in two thousand thirteen was the lone exception similarly new jersey democratic governor phil murphy who defeated republican jack. Seattle rally Yet rally faced a history of incumbent democrats struggling for second terms but democrats would be foolhardy to underestimate what happen tuesday to lose a state like virginia. Which has been trending democratic for decades and destruction so much new jersey suggests that unless things change one of the only the bluest of states or districts will be safe in twenty twenty two. You know if you look at the over performance of republicans in new jersey and you extrapolate that out to next year. That's a forty four seat. Gain for the republicans if you look at the republican performance in virginia and you extrapolate that out across the country. That's a fifty seat gain for the republicans and none of that. In either case contemplates redistricting forty four percent of democrats and democratic leading independence. Wants someone other than biden at the top of the ticket in twenty twenty four two out of three democrats and democratic leaning independents. Don't think biden can win in two thousand twenty four. That's pretty damning. The democrats are problems. L. led me. Add to it this way. They never saw it coming. Y'all they can't see it coming. It's impossible for the democrats to have seen what was coming now. As dan ball says they synced something nervous democratic process. they sensed something in virginia. You know so. If you're on the campaign trail and in most of you will never run a campaign in your lives. I have you do since things.

"In the country everybody, I'm telling you, I love New Jersey. I know a lot of people are always kind of trashing on New Jersey. They have some of the toughest, proudest people in the country. They really do. They love their state and they're very defensive of it. New Jersey was supposed to be a cakewalk. Ten points, Murphy is gonna waltz to victory. And by the way, if Murphy ever thought him going on television and campaigning was a good idea, he should have pulled a Biden. As soon as I saw him on TV, I got animated to try to make sure he's never in leadership again. He's kind of got that. What did you say? Roger Keaton look, like Michael Keaton look, Michael Keaton used car salesman better call so hello, everybody, and I am now the governor of New Jersey. Thank you so much. Am I playing my role? Fake smile, thank you. Good to see you. And as a challenger, you have Jackson orelli, who just ran a grassroots campaign in the most no help whatsoever from the outside. Zero help whatsoever. And breaking right now as we are doing this show Republican Jack chitrali has just taken a 700 vote lead in the garden state. None of this was supposed to happen. Phil Murphy is calling up Tony Soprano. He's calling up Don Corona. He's calling up everyone he possibly can. And look, it's New Jersey. So if you want to talk about shenanigans corner cut and they perfected that entire thing. I don't say that as an insult to New Jersey. I'm just saying, buckle up. That's where that's where a lot of this stuff, unfortunately is centered. Now there's still a lot of votes left in Essex county. I'm sure Stacey Abrams is on her way up. But again, they probably, most of these ballots were probably on a ship off of the coast of Long Beach, California, and were never able to make it. This is Pete Buddha judge. If you said Charlie, who do you think's gonna pull it out? I think that Phil Murphy is gonna pull a Tony Soprano and all of a sudden all these votes are gonna show in Camden county. But make no mistake, the fact that all of a sudden the next day, we have to entertain that a Republican holds the lead, it's shocking. It is a death blow to the Democrat regime. So what we have here in New Jersey is a state of affairs where the Democrats were in such a comfortable position. We're going to do a big wind up for a man that needs to become a household name. The real winner last night is the true citizen government. True citizen government is what happened in New Jersey last night and I can't wait to share this with you, which is one of the most exciting, beautiful, bottom up organic, authentic, political victories. I think in the modern era. Now who would have thought that forcibly masking children and shutting down schools and having birthday parties at Obama's Martha's Vineyard house, while you have to have your children be masks, whoever thought that would be unpopular? And I also want to talk about election integrity because I think a lot of Republicans are getting this wrong. A lot of Republicans say up, see, everything was perfect in Virginia. Therefore we have to stop Tom an election integrity. First of all, I don't think everything was perfect in Virginia. I think we won by so much, we were able to overcompensate all the fairfax nonsense. But after I introduce you to the new national hero of the tru citizen government, the man that we all are. This guy is the Richard jewel of the 2021 American political story. He's a man that didn't ask to be a hero, but it was deemed upon him because he wanted to do the courageous and epic thing. And as it stands right now, he might actually be poised to unseat the longest serving state senator in New Jersey history, a man who spent a $150 and it looks like he might win. Stunning..

"Lydia serena here with judge weinberg as well as at cox and we have a great lineup for you coming up. Do we objected early on line. And we also have governor. David paterson on the line now. Jet rally is a businessman who served in the new jersey. General assembly from twenty eleven to twenty eighteen. He will face phil murphy. The democratic incumbent and it's one of only two governor races in the nation in november. Welcome gesture torelli. Would he agree to be with you once again and governor paterson. You're on the line as well. Jack nice to meet you david. So what generally what is the biggest hurdle you think. The biggest issue now facing new jersey rattus residents certainly taxes taxes and taxes lydia This is a governor that has raised the personal income tax and three and a half years in office raise the personal income tax. Raise the business tax raise property taxes on top of the gas tax increases. He's increased tolls. He bar four billion dollars that we didn't need to pay him back from the next twelve to fifteen years and Increase spending the budget by thirty percent. Eleven billion dollars in less than four years time. He's mortgaged our future and As we all know new jersey and face the largest tax burden in the country and you know what that means for a small business because you built up one didn't you. Jack did i did. And you know there was particularly salt rubbed in the wound this past week when the governor put in place a two hundred and fifty million dollar payroll tax increase. Replenish are depleted unemployment. Trust fund is the trust funds depleted because he continues to hand out unemployment benefits without any checkpoints whatsoever and so he's sitting on billions in federal cares equity fund an american rescue funds that he's allowed by law to use to replenish the unemployment trust fund. Why in the world after everything small business has been through. Why would you hit him with a quarter of a billion dollar tax. Increase only phil. Murphy's world i. We're getting taxed out of here. I just don't even understand. Everybody is fleeing the tristate area because we just can't afford to live here anymore. The tolls alone are ridiculous. Our property taxes new jersey now exceed ninety one hundred dollars a year and We share recent study done by national. Cpa journal says that the average new jersey and is paying more than nine hundred thousand dollars a year. One thousand nine hundred thousand in taxes over their lifetime and Is dead last in the nation massachusetts which came in forty ninth place. One hundred thousand dollars better than new jersey jackets richard. Weinberg how are you. hello richard. Just one important question. What's your vision. As governor of new jersey like vision is jersey a better place in a more affordable place for all citizens and businesses and As an mba cpa. Time business owner. I know exactly what we need to do to lower property taxes. We need a new school funding formula. And i know exactly what we need to tax code to make new jersey much more attractive place to do business so we create David ed cox here. And i know you did some really special things with the new york budget to make sure you got the budgie wanted. What kind of advice would you give to a governor ciccarelli. Well jack has seen that If you're running for governor right now Strangely enough. I mean. I was the chair of the democrat party and i was go but i'm going to be a republican consultant for forty five seconds and give you some advice. And here's my advice. This situation in afghanistan is such a fiasco that it is going to germany down to the local levels in our society. And i think the humor going to have to challenge in this race why this evacuation was occurring in afghanistan. Why is it was going there for wasn't planning and why the democratic party and most immigrants around the country won't apologize for it. The first thing. I would have done if i made such a mess as i did and i made a couple when i was governor it was i got up and admitted to it so i think that brazen honesty that you would be asking for could serve you well in this race. There's no charge for my consultant. David listen no disagreement here. I mean what's going on at our southern border what's going on with inflation. What's going on over in afghanistan I with you. All that does trickle down. And if once people's attitudes with regard to vote. But i'll tell you. The next quarterly tax bill for anyone's home was minds first and foremost. But you're right. It's all the above and we'll do these issues. Well thank you. So much jackson torelli. Stay on the line with us..
