Everything you need, every time you listen. WTOP News. On 945, I'm Dimitri Sotis. Thanks for being with us tonight. Well, the latest on the stunning removal of Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker observers say Republicans are struggling to bring order to their fraction majority. They've got to now begin the difficult process of uniting around a new leader. The House will try to elect a Speaker as soon as next week. Members currently in the running are Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan. It's unclear whether any candidate at will, least right now, be able to get to those 218 votes needed to become Speaker. Politico Global Editor and Chief John Harris joined us here on WTOP with Sean and Nick earlier to discuss the House Speakership and the extraordinary events of the week. It's been a week of chaos. So if you like political chaos, this has been a week to eat popcorn and watch the spectacle. Republicans are really not enjoying this. They know that this chaos in the House is projecting a terrible image for the whole party. As far as what's going to happen next week, it's really hard to tell. House The is full of surprises these days and this possibility that some other candidate, besides those main two that you've mentioned, will emerge. For his part, President Biden has been calling for an attempt at political harmony. More than we need to change the poisonous atmosphere in Washington. We have strong disagreements, but we need to seeing stop each other as enemies. We need to talk to one another, listen to one another, work with one another. He has made comments like that before. So you think that'll make any difference whatsoever? The President is talking about uniting people, but really, can that have an effect in this climate? Well, in the moment in the House, there's simply nobody that's mood in the for that. Of course, Democrats, if they had wanted to, could have saved Kevin McCarthy if they were to lock against him. But their reasonable view was like, why should we do that? This, after all, as the Speaker and Kevin McCarthy was trying to impeach Joe Biden. So at the moment, nobody's in the mood for that kind of unity rhetoric. And Republicans themselves are just bitterly divided. They're really, really angry at the dissidents who took down Speaker McCarthy. John, you have a new piece in Politico magazine with a provocative headline. The House GOP is a failed state. From all the people you've been talking to, how did it get that way and what to should happen fix it? First off, the main thing is mathematics. It's such a narrow majority that Republicans have in the House. means It that at any moment they're at risk of it fracturing, as it did fracture for a former Speaker McCarthy. But also you've got a Republican conference that really is filled with people who don't really want to be led and therefore it's hard awfully to be a leader. Look back at the history over the past generation from Newt Gingrich, Paul Ryan, John Boehner. Really nobody has been able to successfully unify this Republican conference up on Capitol Hill. Got a great show lined up for you this week. Eddie Hearn, the promoter of record for this weekend's Lee Wood fight against Josh Warrington over in the UK joins me to talk about that fight. Plus, Eddie always has a few opinions on everything else that's going on in the world of boxing. We'll get to that a little bit later. But it was a busy weekend in boxing. Canelo Alvarez successfully defended his 168 -pound titles. What's the future for him? What's the future for Jermell Charlo, who quite frankly didn't show up in this fight? I thought it was an embarrassing performance by Jermell Charlo who talked a good game, made us believe or made some people believe he was going to win or at least compete, and then just moved around the ring for 12 rounds to survive a decision. We'll talk about that and much more with Keith Idec, senior writer with BoxingScene .com. He was out in Las Vegas. Keith, let's just start there. Compare your expectations for Canelo Charlo with how the fight played out. Chris, what did you think of the way that fight played out in the ring? Chris, I'm not in any way surprised that Canelo Alvarez won. Of course, Charlo was moving up two weight classes. Canelo, although he hadn't looked all that great in his previous three fights, said repeatedly that he would look better because his surgically repaired left wrist was now 100 percent. He could train with it, et cetera. So I felt like Canelo would win the fight. But I did think honestly it was going to be a competitive fight. And the thing that really surprised me more than anything, Chris, which I think you just alluded to, is Jermell Charlo simply did not come to win this fight. He seemed to come to go 12 rounds with Canelo to avoid getting knocked out. And the reason that surprised me more than anything, Chris, is because that's not who Jermell Charlo is. That's not who he has been throughout his career. He has fought and promoted his fights and done interviews with a chip on his shoulder that never goes away. And it has served him very well because he's always been defiant and disproving sometimes imaginary enemies. But, you know, he has always used that to motivate him. And in this case, he really didn't. I thought that he would be able to flip that switch on fight night, although throughout the promotion he sort of behaved the way that he behaved once the bell rang. Like he didn't really believe that he could win the fight and that, you know, this might have been too much for him in the sense that he was moving up two weight classes and fighting a big puncher and a dangerous guy. And that's the way he approached the entire fight. You know, Derek James was on him between rounds. Hey, you're losing this fight. You need to do more. You need to pick it up. And he just never really responded to that. And again, I can't really emphasize enough, Chris, how surprised I am that he didn't try to win. Because, you know, this is a very prideful guy. This is a guy, again, who has repeatedly proved people wrong or tried to prove people wrong and used that as a way to drive him to great heights. Because, Chris, he's the undisputed 154 pound champion, the first one of the four belt era. He has avenged the two blemishes or the two previous blemishes on his record. He's avenged both of those. He knocked out Tony Harrison in their rematch. And although in his first fight against Tony Harrison, I didn't really think that he lost. It was a very close competitive fight. Didn't necessarily think that he lost. But he came back and avenged it with an 11th round knockout. You could certainly argue that he'd lost his first fight to Brian Costanio. But then came back and knocked Costanio out as well in his rematch. So he had taken care of the two blemishes on his record. This is just something that's just going to, you know, it's a blemish on his record that is never going to go away. And it might, unfortunately, be for him, the fight that people remember him for most. Because he just did not come to make this a competitive fight. And there's really no excuse for that. Unless he was hurt and he's not using that as an excuse. Unless his left hand really wasn't 100%. Because it was his first fight since he broke two bones in his left hand last December. Unless that was a factor and he's just not using that as an excuse, which would be commendable to hide that if that is the case. Just didn't look like he came to win the fight. And there's really no two ways about that. I don't really see how you could have seen that any other way. I spoke to Tim Zu yesterday. Did an interview with him for his upcoming fight with Brian Mendoza. And he echoed, we basically agreed on everything that Tim Zu said. And he felt, he was less harsh on Charlo than I thought he was going to be, honestly, because they have this rivalry. But he said the same thing. He was just surprised that we didn't get the A -level Charlo that we've gotten in most of his fights. And the kind of, you know, tenacious, ferocious guy that we usually see. Yeah, Charlo wants credit for going the distance. He doesn't get it in my book. He wants credit for not getting knocked out. He doesn't get it in my book. If you take on a challenge like this, I don't care if you move up one -way class, two -way classes, three -way classes. You have an obligation to try to win. Like, people are paying money to see you try to win. People are buying, spending 85 bucks on pay -per -view to see you try to win. He didn't do that. And I agree with you. When his career's over, you know, if it's corrected tomorrow, this would be the fight he's remembered for. For going up two -way classes and, quote, challenging Canelo Alvarez, but not really challenging him. I'm not surprised that Canelo dominated. I'll say that, Keith, because I've been saying that since that fight was made. I never believed Jermell Charlo could compete with Canelo because, and I say this about every Canelo opponent. To be competitive or to beat Canelo Alvarez, you have to throw with him. You have to be willing to let the right hand go. And since like 2018, when Canelo became this sort of middleweight and above destroyer, only two fighters have done that. Gennady has Golovkin done it, and Dmitry Bivol has done it. Both those guys have been willing to throw punches with Canelo. They have not been fearful of the artillery that was coming back. But every opponent other than that, that I've seen Canelo go up against, whether it's Callum Smith. Billy Joe Saunders had a different game plan, but eventually Billy Joe kind of succumbed to it. And now Jermell Charlo, they just, you know, they were trying to, Caleb Plant, I put on that list as well. They were just trying to jab and, you know, move and try to outbox him from the outside. You can't do that. You can't beat Canelo Alvarez unless you're willing to throw something big back against him. And, you know, Jermell Charlo was kind of an oversized example of that. You know, just the way he fought was just, I thought, just awful. Just a really weak performance from Jermell. But a kind of a continuation of guys that, you know, show up believing they have a game plan to face and beat Canelo Alvarez. But they just don't. And that kind of brings me to my next question, Keith, of who does at this point? You know, I think we'd all agree David Benavidez, at least on paper, is the most competitive option for Canelo Alvarez. I don't know if he's a realistic option for May of 2024. Terrence Crawford's out there saying he wants a piece of Canelo. I love Terrence Crawford. I think it's a marketable fight. But you're not going to convince me Terrence Crawford's going to stand in the pocket and trade with Canelo Alvarez. I just don't believe it. Jermell Charlo, don't get me started. There's no market for a Jermell Charlo -Canelo Alvarez fight. Less so after watching Jermell, the smaller brother and the more active brother, lose to Canelo. What is realistic right now for Canelo Alvarez as we look to the second fight of this PBC deal? Chris, the last time we spoke about this on the podcast, I remember telling you that the people who wanted to see him fight Terrence Crawford next, better hope that the Jermell Charlo fight is at least competitive, because then how do you sell a fight against an even smaller opponent in his next fight? And here we are. I'm not saying Terrence Crawford won't go in there to win. He certainly, based on everything that I know about Terrence Crawford, yet I also thought similar things about Jermell Charlo. I would think Terrence Crawford would go in there with a real attempt to win the fight. He's got a lot of pride. He's a very talented guy. He's one of the best pound -for -pound fighters in the world, coming off an incredibly dominant, career -defining win. But like you said earlier, Chris, when you get in there and you fight Canelo and he starts touching you in the beginning of the fight, people tend to realize, well, this is going to be harder than I thought. Canelo said that throughout Fight Week last week. He said watch when the fight starts and then you'll see Jermell Charlo realize that he's in there with a guy that he hasn't, the type of guy that he hasn't been in the ring with before, and that obviously played out. The same thing could be true of Crawford. Now, it is a marketable fight, Chris, and I think the public reaction to it, to me, has been somewhat surprising because it's been relatively positive. People want to see this fight. I can't stress enough. This guy would have to move up 21 pounds to fight Canelo because Canelo has repeatedly said, I am not doing this in a catchweight. It's not going to be at 164, 162, something where you might then think that Terrence Crawford has more of a chance to win. I really don't see as great as Terrence Crawford is, and as much as I commend him for wanting this challenge, I don't see this as a fight that he can win.

"To the conservative saver, I found, hey, do you own anything outside of that fiat system? Do you own, like, what is it? You know, do you own something out there? Well, they might say, well, I have gold. No, no, no, no. Gold is not outside of the fiat system. It's also very much entrenched within it. You can look into gold and even gold, gold bugs will tell you that there is some insulation, but it's very much entrenched. What do you own outside of that system? And the best thing outside of that system is Bitcoin. It's not even debatable. This is the Blue Collar Bitcoin Podcast, a show where Average Joe firefighters explore the most important monetary technology of the 21st century. We talk Bitcoin, we talk finance and we talk shit. Thanks for choosing to spend time with two degenerate firemen. In this rip, we're adding a third, Mr. Dom Bay's third appearance on our show. Dom is the king of underselling and overperforming, and this outing is no different. He is equally adept at hitting the high points of philosophical ideating as he is comfortable with a solid joke about someone losing a finger with a Coke fingernail on it. We are slated to join Dom in the Swan Dome at Pacific Bitcoin this Friday at 3 p .m. If you're going to be at Pacific Bitcoin, we suggest you be there. Dom is taking no prisoners in his persuasion tactics to pack that place. The fact that they are going to allow the three of us free reign on stage with no supervision is both brave and short -sighted. It's fortunate for us that this is happening later on the second day. We will get to experience at least most of the conference before they toss us out. We hope to see you there. If you can't make it to Pacific Bitcoin, don't forget about a couple of other upcoming events in the pipeline. Those being Bitcoin Amsterdam later this month and Bitcoin 2024 in Nashville next July. You can use coupon code BCB to get 10 % off either event. As always, a gentle reminder to get your Bitcoin off of exchanges. Get those sats tucked away into cold storage using a cold card Mark IV. "Just brought in to train our sailors and our Marines and our Coast Guardsmen would be secure and wouldn't be left out in bad weather or in an inferior hangar system. I've spoken to the chief appropriator matter. on that He said that Jake Sherman's report is false, that they expect that $50 million for Northwest Florida to support our aviation training mission will be there. Again, that's not something for me, that's for something our service members and to ensure that the new equipment we've purchased is well maintained and able to be used for training. Congressman, I want to just get back to where we started while we have you with us. You accused Kevin McCarthy the on floor of the House of cutting a secret deal, you said, with Joe Biden over Ukraine. It was partly his removal as speaker. Steve Scalise though backed aid for Ukraine just last week and is seen as a close ally of Kevin McCarthy. Is that a deal breaker for you? No, because it really is the secret part of the deal that offends me more than someone's personal On Ukraine, the matter is somewhat settled now because in the Republican conference we have a rule called the Hastert rule, which means that once a majority of the majority takes a position on a policy matter, you can't use minority a of the majority to roll them. And in the last vote on Ukraine, we had 101 Republicans vote in favor that of aid, 117 vote against. So it's sort of a settled matter that the House of Representatives is done funding the war in Ukraine. So that'll happen, there'll be a vote then on a supplemental request for Ukraine. Will you vote for it? Absolutely not. I've been voting against U .S. involvement in this war for some time. I believe this war will end this time the European democracies wanted to. Sir, just quickly, because you brought up the Hastert rule, is that something you to like live by? Because yesterday, four percent of your Republican conference ousted about McCarthy when he had more than 90 % of the backing of your colleagues? That was the majority of the majority, wasn't it? Sure, but the Hastert rule would apply to policy matters and bills, not procedural matters, such as a resolution to deem the speaker vacant. Moreover, if I violated the Hastert rule, it would only come after Speaker McCarthy violated it on the Ukraine supplemental. The last Ukraine supplemental we had didn't have a majority of the majority. I can tell you that that type of kind of boorish leadership wasn't sitting well with some of the people Alright, and I know it's not technically a real rule, it's just something you all like to live by. Congressman Matt from Florida's first congressional district, thank you so much for joining Bloomberg Television Radio this evening. Alright, that of course was our balance of power, team Joe Matthew and Ann Marie Horton with representative, Republican Representative Matt Gaetz from the state of Florida talking there for about 10 -12 minutes and discussing certainly the ousting of US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and that was certainly many would say that that was put into process as a result of the representative there. Also talking specifically about some of the, I should say the Fitch downgrade and he said that it was due to out of control spending, also speaking specifically about the former President Donald Trump and whether or not he has been in touch with him and maybe what his role has been in some of this or some of the support that maybe he has provided the representative. Right, and that's what Gaetz exactly said there that Trump has been quote, thoroughly encouraging of my efforts. So seems like they are in agreement there, that is Matt Gaetz and Donald Trump being in agreement there. I think it was interesting and I think about some of our earlier conversations with our members of our Bloomberg News team, Billy House specifically who is in and out around the Capitol watching all of this happening and just kind of what is next for the Republican Party and it seems to be, you know, what will be the role of some of these hard -line conservatives. A small group within the Republican Party, Molly, but you do wonder about what's their next step in terms of moving forward. it Right, would well seem to be that, you know, Jim Jordan being the, you know, next person who is potentially on the ticket to assume the Speaker role. He's running or put his name in the hat as well as Steve Scalise, the number two ranking Republican right now. So I don't know, I would think though after all of the trouble the hardliners have caused the faction within the Republican Party that I don't know that they would be jumping to somebody like Jim Jordan to take up the Speaker seat. My take. And you do wonder, is that an individual who can actually bring the party together and to move forward? You know, we've got another countdown on a possible government shutdown. We talked earlier about the presidential election just, you know, about a year away here. And you do think about the moves that the Republican Party, any party would ahead take of a presidential election, the impact that that can have and possibly sway the voters. It's important. Sure. Yeah. And you know, that election, I mean, man, it's it seems so far, like far away. we're But man, getting into that last 12 months here leading up into the campaign. So it's really it's going to be crunch time. All right. So again, Representative Matt Gaetz speaking with our Balance of Power team. If you missed any of it, be sure to check it out at Bloomberg .com. You can listen to the full conversation. They certainly talked about some of the legal issues or charges or allegations that have come against the representative specifically as well. And he certainly made his case in terms of those have been put to the side and dealt with. So anyway, a lot to that conversation. So check it out at Bloomberg .com. We're going to continue to monitor what is going on on the House floor as they consider removing and McCarthy ultimately see where that leads in terms of do we get a new House Speaker and what that means for policy or whether or not somehow Kevin McCarthy is able to woo more to his side and maintain his position. "Frank was ostensibly operating part of the vehicle that was speeding and ran over someone. Frank, according to witnesses, told Turton to keep driving. Turton ended up pleading guilty to felony hit and run and Frank got a wrongful death lawsuit in August of 2000. He refused to even show up in court, wouldn't pay anything. He owed the surviving children of the guy he killed $275,000. Frank wouldn't pay it. Finally, he was on the lam. They were trying to track him down. They couldn't track him down. They looked for him at Joe's house. They couldn't find him. Finally, in 2008, when Joe was about to become vice president, the family found Joe. They were able to track down Joe and Joe completely blew them off. They sent them a form letter and said, we have nothing to do with this. Frank's not going to pay anything. The senator who's about to become vice president can't help anything. Totally impersonal. He had an opportunity to show empathy for a family that had suffered the exact, horrific, unthinkable faith that he had suffered. Instead, he sent them a form letter and blew them off completely. That, to me, is the single anecdote that proves all you need to know about Joe Biden's character. Anything he does to show character publicly is a facade. That is who he is.

I did decide to buy one of my own books, even though I've got a stack of them in my office. I thought that would be fun. I don't have the Kindle yet. I hope it's good. You will want the Kindle because, as I have a Kindle of all my books, I often will take parts of them for speeches. I'll have those notes or for an article. You'll want your own Kindle. Anyway, because we'll have time. I want to give you a lot of time. You're endlessly insightful. Before that, any thoughts? I have no idea what you'll say. I'm just deeply interested in the Kevin McCarthy and his being deposed. Yeah. This one is tough because I'm going to tell you what I actually think, even if it hurts maybe some people's opinion of me and then makes them not want to buy the book that I'm here to talk to you about. I don't like any of it. I think it's all sort of grandstanding adjacent. I understand some of the points that some of the people who wanted Kevin McCarthy deposed, what their issues are. I, of course, get a general frustration with congressional Republicans who have rarely missed an opportunity to miss opportunities over my lifetime following politics. But I do think Kevin McCarthy has done a decent job at an impossible job, a job that secretly, Dennis, and I was in DC for maybe eight or nine years of my life. I just recently left. No one wants that job. It's a thankless job. It's a painful job. You're negotiating with some of the most difficult, egomaniacal people on the planet. I think Kevin was doing a pretty good job. Now we have a scenario where you've got eight Republicans joining literally every single Democrat. We're told that, no, trust the process. This is going to be great for conservatives, something that all the Democrats want and only eight Republicans want. That seems incredibly far-fetched to me. And then if you add that Matt Gaetz, who's the ringleader, who I have a lot of nice things to say about Matt Gaetz, a lot of really nice things. I think he's got great energy, great charisma. But he's a personal beef with Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy has allowed an ethics investigation in the Gaetz to continue. There's no doubt that this is part of this. And in the meantime, I'm trying to get the word out about how bad Joe Biden is, who I think is the biggest threat to the country at the moment by a mile. And now we're focused on whether McCarthy, who's good on some stuff but maybe not perfect on others, whether he's the real problem. So I don't like any of it, to answer your question.

A highlight from Neglect of Domestic Issues: Americas Growing Concerns with Karoline Leavitt

"Donald Trump is the only candidate in America, on both sides, that cannot be bought. He is running because he loves this country, he loves this country's people, and he wants to save it from the hell that Joe Biden has put it through. Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and my fellow citizens, America's comeback now. starts right All right, welcome back Financial Guys Media Network, Mike Sbarroza, in for another exclusive interview today. I have the pleasure of having Caroline Levitt, a spokeswoman for MAGA, Inc. with me today. Caroline, thanks for joining us. Thank you so much for having me, Mike. I appreciate it. Absolutely. So if you didn't get the hint, MAGA, Inc., she is working, you know, I shouldn't say for the president, but working on the president in terms of the campaign and plugging what he does really well. Caroline, I've seen you on Newsmax, I've seen you on Fox News, a lot of different places, and you've said a lot of great things. I saw you go at it with a Ron DeSantis campaigner the other day, I liked that, that was a lot of fun. Let me just talk about a few talking points, though, about the president and issues that the left is now claiming the president has. So just this week, he was in, was it New Hampshire he was in, South Carolina it was. Yeah. And he went to a gun store and now they're saying that he violated his legal obligations, he went and bought a gun. From everybody that was there said that was not true. Your thoughts on the left now saying he should be put in jail for buying a firearm. Honestly, it's completely unsurprising at this point. They will do and say anything that they possibly can to try and attack President Trump. He was visiting a small business, visiting a gun store in the great state of South Carolina. The owners there are big supporters of his, and they had gifted him a Glock that was ingrained with Trump 45. And then the Democrats, you know, absolutely went ballistic in trying to say that he was violating laws. And it's just ridiculous. This is how, this is what they do. They go after President Trump for absolutely everything, but then they turn a blind eye to the real crimes committed by their own party, namely Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, who almost evaded charges on a federal gun violation, which he's now facing an indictment for with an attorney that was handpicked by Merrick Garland, who's from Biden's home state. So the corruption goes on and on and the Democrat side of the media says nothing, but they're constantly attacking the former president. Voters see right through this crap, really doesn't matter. You'll see that in the polls shortly.

A highlight from Prioritizing American Families: A Disconnect with Career Politicians with Stefan Mychajliw

"American families are struggling to put gas in their car to pay six dollars a gallon. They're struggling to buy milk and eggs and groceries. People are really hurting in Joe Biden's America. The difference was crystal clear on that debate stage. The vague ramasami talked about his positive America First vision of how he's going to improve the American economy, put money in the pockets of people. Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests and my fellow citizens, America's comeback starts right now. We are live with Vivek Ramaswamy, deputy communications director and friend of the financial guys, Stefan Mihailu. Stefan, how are you? That's right. I'm a financial guys client and deputy comms director for Vivek Ramaswamy. I say that's a great one -two punch. That is. It's a great thing. So tell us a little bit about the overall feeling from Team Vivek or the Vivek camp, I should say, about the debate this past week. Well, I actually drove over with Vivek Ramaswamy here to the Reagan Library and there was a mission to do two things. One, let Vivek be Vivek, be presidential, be above the fray. We knew the attacks were coming. We knew the career politicians on that stage were going to attack Vivek Ramaswamy. And why? Because if you're, you know, getting kicked in the rear, that means you're out in front. So we're wholeheartedly expecting attacks from career politicians is exactly what happened. And so I'd be very concerned if a lot of the career politicians on the stage did not attack Vivek Ramaswamy. They did, and we are more than pleased with his sharing of the American people, what his America First vision is to build on the success of Donald Trump, to build on what Donald Trump laid down that foundation with Vivek Ramaswamy as a candidate for president now in 2024. So you mentioned being the hunted, and I talked to you at a different interview about this, but in debate number one, Stefan, people were trying to just learn who Vivek was at that point, right? He had a couple of zingers. He had a pretty good performance in debate one, but as debate one ended, he was getting attacked and mauled by everybody on the debate stage that night. And then debate two, they started right after him right from the get go. And I do agree with you. I think that was a very interesting thing to see. Hey, you know, and I'll tell you, Ron DeSantis didn't take that right. That beating that, or that, that try to take a beating like that. Nikki Haley didn't, Tim Scott didn't, they were going after one, well, two people, Donald Trump and Vivek Ramaswamy on that debate stage. I was really shocked at the fact that now Chris Christie has a potential running mate in his campaign of vengeance and anger and grievance against Donald Trump. And it's Ron DeSantis. Ron DeSantis attacked not only Vivek Ramaswamy, but Ron DeSantis attacked Donald Trump and Vivek Ramaswamy appeared presidential. He's staying above the fray and he's letting the American people know he's not running against Donald Trump or Ron DeSantis or any politician on that stage. Vivek Ramaswamy is running for the American people. So while we were in the green room, basically watching the debate unfold, we were very thrilled that all the queer politicians went after Vivek Ramaswamy and look, it's no different than what the queer politicians did in 2016 against Donald Trump. History repeated itself. The fact that they were going after Donald Trump in 2016 and they're doing the same thing with Vivek Ramaswamy. So let's look at a couple of those attacks that he received, Stefan. Number one was the TikTok, the TikTok attack with him doing a video. Was it Jake Paul or one of the Paul brothers? Many of the candidates on the debate stage had an issue with him doing any type of TikTok due to the China influence with TikTok. Your thoughts on that or Vivek's thoughts on that? Well, look, Vivek Ramaswamy did business in China. He saw how basically dirty and crooked the process was. So what did he do? As he said on the debate stage, he got the hell out. Now compare that with Apple and Nike and LeBron James who stayed in China, who's profiting from China. So Vivek Ramaswamy says all the time he is going to declare independence from America's greatest enemy and that is communist China. And who better to take out an enemy than someone who knows the enemy. And so as far as TikTok is concerned as well, look, Republicans, shockingly, are in the business of basically not playing within the rules and parameters of a campaign and letting Democrats run all over us for the past few decades. The Democrats are on TikTok. That's how you reach young voters. And that's exactly what Vivek Ramaswamy is going to do. Play by the rules and reach young voters. So I want to ask that question because Jake Paul actually tweeted about Vivek this week about this exact issue and I agreed with what Jake Paul said. The majority of young people between the ages of let's call it 12 and 30, their primary platform is TikTok, right? I mean, that's where they are. And was this totally calculated by Vivek Ramaswamy to get into that voting base because everybody's on Twitter, everybody's on Instagram, but TikTok and everyone can have their feelings on TikTok, Stefan. I don't personally love it either, but was this a calculated move? Vivek has feelings on TikTok. He is crystal clear about empowering parents to make sure that kids 16 and under are not on any social media platform, because as he says all the time, we don't like kids engage in highly addictive drugs like alcohol or tobacco at a very young age. And so Vivek Ramaswamy, his president, says he'll do the same with social media, empower parents and make sure they know that their kids are not on any of these platforms when it comes to running for president of the United States, you have to talk to voters in every means necessary. The Democrats are taking advantage of this medium and so too is Vivek Ramaswamy. We're here to win an election and talk to young voters. That's the way he's doing it. Before we get into the specific issues of the debate last night, I do want to talk about two quick things. Number one, what was Team Vivek's thought about the way that that was moderated, the way that the debate went? It looked very sloppy from afar. I was not in the room. I was not there like you were, but it looked very sloppy. It looked very messy with people talking over each other, people going over on their time, the moderators not asking pointed questions, getting lost in the shuffle. What were the thoughts from Team Vivek? Well, look, as a former news anchor, I know how hard it is to basically try and round up feral cats and get them to play by the rules. For the most part, Vivek Ramaswamy did. The most important rule that he honored was Reagan's 11th commandment, speak no ill will of a fellow Republican. That was the most important rule when it comes to either the moderators or the debate platform or being here in Reagan's presidential library. Don't speak ill will of a fellow Republican. Vivek honored that commandment. He talked about his positive America First vision, how he's basically going to increase and strengthen GDP growth, strengthen and protect the border using the US military to bomb cartels, keep us out of World War III, all the other career politicians on that stage just in the same way they treated Donald Trump in 2016. They wanted to attack and attack and attack not only a fellow Republican, but a business owner and political outsider. It happened eight years ago in 2016. It happened again in the second GOP debate here at the Reagan Library.

SBF TRIAL: 10/02 Update

"Welcome to the SBF trial, a Coindesk podcast network newsletter bringing you daily insights from inside the courtroom where Sam Bankman -Fried will try to stay out of prison. Follow the Coindesk podcast network to get the audio each morning with content from the Coindesk regulation team and voiced by Wondercraft AI. It is officially trial week and as Bloomberg's Joe Wiesenthal would likely put it, this is why we get up in the morning. It's been exactly nine months and 20 days since Sam Bankman -Fried got arrested at his then home in the Bahamas. Today marks the last day before he is set to start the trial in which he will win back his freedom or be locked up for what a federal judge says could be a very long time. Thousands of pages of evidence ranging from internal documents to audio recordings will be presented and fought over in the next six weeks as US prosecutors try to prove that the former FTX founder knowingly defrauded customers and business partners. Arguably the most damning evidence or lack thereof could come from the recollections and personal opinions of Bankman -Fried's former colleagues, friends and housemates. Caroline Ellison, Nishad Singh and Gary Wang were close friends and roommates of Bankman -Fried as much as they were colleagues. Ellison was emotionally invested with the FTX founder and troubled by the former couple's on and off relationship which according to a diary entry from her slowly fizzled out in February 2022. Prosecutors also say they intend to call up FTX customers and investors including non -US customers over the course of the trial. On another note, do you remember when FTX suddenly announced it was hacked and lost some $600 million worth of crypto? This was the same day it filed for bankruptcy last November. A decent portion of those funds sat in a wallet for a few months and then started moving this weekend. Around 15 ,000 Ether worth around $26 million at Sunday night's prices moved out of a wallet through various routers and privacy tools between Friday night and Sunday morning. We never got an explanation for what exactly happened and how the exploit was carried out. I imagine federal investigators are probably closely tracking this episode. On a logistics note, Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled in favor of the DOJ's motion to prevent Bankman -Fried from getting into the weeds on what his lawyers may or may not have said about FTX's operations in his opening statement. However, Bankman -Fried's defense team can still raise the advice of counsel defense later on with notice to the court and DOJ. In court filings, the defense said the argument would be that FTX's in -house and external lawyers were part of decisions to use auto -deleting messaging platforms, set up legal entities in the US, loan funds to FTX and Alameda executives, and other aspects of the FTX -Alameda relationship. Want to follow along? Sign up for CoinDesk's new daily newsletter, The SBF Trial, bringing you insights from the courthouse and around the case. "Scott Lehrer president of military affairs comm is a US Navy veteran taking his passion of traveling and serving fellow veterans He was recently appointed president of military affairs comm an online travel website giving deep discounts to veterans coming up next on veteran on the move Welcome to veteran on the move if you're a veteran in transition an entrepreneur wannabe or someone still stuck in that Trying to escape this podcast is dedicated to your success and now your host Joe Crane As a member of not -for -profit Navy Federal puts members at the heart of every single thing they do Find out more at Navy federal org Alright today we're talking with Navy veteran Scott Laura who is a president of military affairs comm Scott You and I've been in you know in loose touch for several years now You've been following the podcast like almost way back since the beginning if I remember correct Absolutely, just a huge fan of the podcast and appreciate everything you do Joe for our veterans and family members of veterans Yeah, so let's start off like we usually do take us back and tell us what you did the Navy Oh my gosh back in 1979 I was working at the Kmart camera department in Aurora, Illinois Just outside of Chicago and I was about to graduate from high school and my assistant manager there said Scott What do you want to do after high school? I said I have no clue, but I don't want to go to school You know don't want to go to college and he goes well join the Navy see the world Well, the problem is he didn't tell me that the world was 75 % water. So I joined the Navy When I went into Chicago to get all registered They said, you know, what do you want to be? I said, I really don't know and they said well What about a fire controlman? I said, well, I don't want to fight fires and the guy laughed He goes well about like being a radarman and it's like that sounds cool and they said, okay Well, you'll go to boot camp here in Chicago in a couple weeks. I said I'm going to San Diego They said you're going to San Diego cuz I mean I joined in set in September and it was starting to get cold So I went to yeah, I went to boot camp in San Diego at 79 then I went to a school at Damnet, Virginia Went up to Maine to get my ship the Morrison FFG 13. It was in three pieces in Bath, Maine They put it together. We sailed down to Boston and Was commissioned there went to Mayport Went to church there in Jackson, but here in Jacksonville met my wife I'm married 39 years to grown kids and two grandkids And so I love the Navy and all over the world Italy Spain France Panama Canal off the coast of Iran and Iraq and I love the Navy but I stayed in nine years It was just really hard on my wife with two small children So I got out and then I went on my entrepreneurial journey. We'll talk a little bit about that What was your transition like when you got out of the Navy you get a job right away? Was the entrepreneurship thing already there? Well, fortunately and the one thing I want to share with the audience. It's who you know, and You've got to be out there you and it's not even the internet It's just like who do you know? Because I knew some people and I was able to get a job with a division of driver's license in, Florida So I got out I immediately had a job I wasn't making a ton of money but I was an employee and I worked there and then I of course I got a couple other jobs to as Other things opened up. But yeah again for those folks that are listening to the podcast you got to get out there There's no one who's gonna promote you but you and you got to be professional. You got to look good You got to speak good and it's who you know, and I will just say for anybody listening reach out to Joe or myself We would both love to help anybody to to move into that transition the only thing I would caution you about is that a lot of people will try to come after veterans and say hey Join this franchise and you know 50 $100 ,000 and a lot of us don't have that kind of money A lot of us don't have time to go back to school Now a lot of guys do have the GI Bill or other Opportunities like that, but I always love helping fellow veterans get on the path to a good job and success Yeah, it's so true it's who you know and unfortunately if you've been in the military like you were for nine years You may not have a big civilian network But you might have a network of veterans that got out before you and keep in touch with them but I hear I've heard stories were like I applied for a thousand jobs and didn't get one response from anybody and it's like Well, that's pretty typical these online job boards most of the time you don't get hired from them unless you know somebody on the inside and Then you still got to apply through the job board and then because you know somebody your Application gets pulled and then you find your way in it's it's it's all about who you know Definitely one super secret tip. I'll share Joe is that veterans get one free year of LinkedIn premium so just go on LinkedIn you know let them know you're a veteran and There's lots of free courses on LinkedIn and that that's my secret. I mean, that's how I know people Being in the travel industry getting to know the CEOs of these travel of these cruise lines And once you're on LinkedIn and you reach out to them and be humble be nice. I am so -and -so and But again, the problem with the military is they really don't prepare us for civilian work We veterans think well just because we're a veteran or we work hard and we're dedicated. We should automatically get the job Well, the job market is so tight now that they're being very selective on who they hire Yeah, they want they want somebody to have all the qualifications that they already need They don't want to train somebody like the military always does train people from scratch In the civilian sector, they don't they don't have time to train you They they need you making them money from day one And but there are there are some good skills military guys have as far as you know The soft skills the leadership the motivation You know, they show up to work on time They're not late, you know, those kind of things can be huge Some some people like to view those things as maybe the givens of a typical good employee But if you don't have some of those basic skills that the job requires, it's it's really tough for civilian companies You know to hire you and bring you in because they can't afford To train people for months or years on end like the military does well Joe You make a very good point in addition to that guys. You can't go in. I want 80. I want 90 I want a hundred you may need to go in for 25 or 30 thousand get your fee You know be trainable be open listen learn and once they see that then you can go up But I think so many people Joe think, you know I deserve 70 80 90 100 and maybe your wife or your spouse wants you to make that money To bring it in but you got to be realistic absolutely As a member owned not -for -profit Navy Federal puts members at the heart of every single thing that they do Low fees and great rates resources to help you crush your financial goals 24 -7 access to stateside member service representatives with award -winning customer service earnings and savings of four hundred seventy three dollars per year by banking with us an average credit card APR that's six percent lower than the industry average a Market leading regular savings rate nearly two times the industry average I'm still with Navy Federal after 33 years and not going anywhere Navy Federal is insured by NCUA NFC you reserves the right to change or just continue promotions and rates at any time without notice Dollar value shown represents the results of the 2022 Navy Federal member give back study credit card value claim based on 2022 internal average APR assigned to members Compared to the advertising industry APA average published on credit cards comm value claim based on 2022 internal regular savings rate average compared to 2022 industry regular service average rate published by FDIC gov learn more at Navy federal org In a startling description the UN food chief warned the world with words knocking on famines door He called what we're facing a perfect storm of a perfect storm He's not alone parents published that a food shortage could be coming even in the u .s.

A highlight from Reaching Out / Great Ideas for Evangelism

"We talked about survival last night. You know there's a saying I've always thought, don't wait until you're thirsty to dig a well. A lot of times we wait until the 15th round before we've been knocked down, before we go for help. Isn't that true? Sometimes we have to hit that bottom bottom, I guess. Just don't take things for granted. Good lives, lives that are together are not my accident. They're my right choices. The world just says you're lucky, but we know it's not luck. We know it's not luck. You don't order godly kids in the catalog. I'm a godly kid, respectful. You don't order me, you have to build lives. And I tell you what, we live in a day that, I tell you what, it's kind of sad. God doesn't give you wisdom. To see things how he sees them, and actually to see through things. To see through the deception of Satan. Look, two things I begged for in my life. I begged to be a solider, and I begged to raise my kids. He used to beg God for wisdom, because I knew his past was going to be greater than me. He used to say, if you want to mess up your life, that's your choice, but you're not messing your kids' lives up. And I don't know, I guess God, I just begged God for wisdom, and then James, he says he'll give it to you liberally if you ask. And I do believe he has. I got a lady in my church, my secretary, I'm going to be the secretary. She said, I think there is certainly something about raising kids. And if I really even know what I said, I just need to ask her. I think she wrote down everything I've ever said. And it's nice to have people listen. You know, it's ironic, people in my church now are more like me than my own kids. That's just the way it is. They're more like their pastor. They've been influenced by their pastor. My people have been influenced by me. They've been sitting under my preaching group, some of them, for 29 years. So, you know, they actually thank and remind me of how my kids would be. I see my kids, and they've kind of sometimes drifted away from different ways. And it kind of hurts me, but they become like their pastor. And, you know, so we just need to try to encourage each other, you know, hold together. You know, we're one body of many members. Amen. I think I heard one time that a car has about 30 ,000 parts. You know, it takes all of them to put together. It only takes one of them to miss malfunctions before you're in trouble. Isn't that the truth? You know, when one malfunction, you know, you have maybe eight cylinders on your car. You know, when one of them malfunctions, you lose a lot more than one -eighth of your power. Anyone in those cars knows if one plug or one wire is misfiring, it's like you lose 70 % of your power. And, you know, we got to make sure we don't malfunction on starry again. Mm -hmm. Joe, Steve will bring her own water tonight, because I'm not falling for that one yet. You know, we just need to work together as a body. You know, hey, I always tell my people, the devil only needs one heart to work out of. Don't let your heart be that one he works out of. It's a dangerous place to be, too. And, well, I think we have enough work out here. We have enough people that I think God's work, besides having Christians, amen, but Ezekiel, if you're Ezekiel 33 now, verse, I just thought we'd start at verse 31. It says, and they came unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear my words, but they will not do them. For with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after covetousness, passions, desires, things like that. And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument, for they hear thy words, but they do them not. They were too powerful at first, aren't they? Man, I just read that. They point that verse, so many people are, they sit in church, and, you know, they may say, oh, it's a good message, whatever, but they just don't do them. God says, happier little do these things, amen, you know? And just knowing them and not doing them actually just makes you miserable, probably, right? Some people just have enough religion to bug them instead of bless them. Isn't that the truth? Yeah, just enough to just make them miserable without making them joyful. One guy I've told, and I've heard this all the time, but he's going to tell me in church, he says, the pastor's job is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable, you know? So I'm here to try to disturb you where you're comfortable and comfort you where you're hurting. Amen? And so we come here tonight and turn with me now to Mark, Matthew, Mark, I think, with the gospel, where Christ is portrayed as his servant. You know, the four gospels in Matthew, God is portrayed as a king, as a king, and Mark as a servant, and Mark and Luke as a son of man, and John, the son of God. And we find here one of my passages I love, and I don't know, anyone have favorite, I love, I have so many favorite passages, I guess, but I like this one because it's about four men, I guess, a four, but I guess I can't even say for sure, I'm sure there were probably men that took a man of palsy that was paralyzed through the Peter's house roof to get him to Jesus to be healed. It says there in chapter two, no, actually this just follows where I talked about it the other day about the leper that was healed, and Jesus said in verse 44, right before that in chapter one, see thou say nothing to any man that would go thy way and show thyself to the priests and offer for like cleanliness these things which Moses commanded for a testimony to them. But he went out and began to publicize it much, to blaze abroad the matter, and so much that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city. I mean, God, Jesus at the end is so well known now, it's hard for him to even, you know, move and around stuff, and set him up in the desert places, and they came to him from every quarter. So we come here now, it says here, and again, he entered into Capernaum, you know, that's kind of where he kind of made his home, where Peter was after some days, and it was noise that he was in the house. And straightway, many were gathered together in so much that there was no room for them, no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door. And he preached the word unto them, and they came unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was born of four, and when they could not come nigh unto him from the press, in other words, the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was, and when they had broken a nub, they let down a bad brim the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he sent unto the sick of the palsy, saying, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. And there were certain of the scribes sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, you know, isn't that amazing? Here in this crowd, there are some hearts that were very, very ungodly. Here they are just looking for a reason to cause trouble, looking for a reason, observing just with a critical spirit, you know, and sadly, they can be in a church, someone comes just to be a critic, but there were certain of the scribes sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, why does this man thus speak blaspheming? Who can forgive sins but God only? See, they knew exactly what Jesus was saying he was. Jesus said, I am God, you know, and that made them angry because they didn't want to receive it except that, and immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye of these sayings in your hearts? Whether it is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, thy sins be forgiven thee, or to say, Arise and take up thy bed and walk. But that ye may know that the Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins. He said to the sick of palsy, I say unto thee, Arise and take up thy bed and go thy way unto thy house, and immediately he arose, took up his bed, and went forth before them all, insomuch that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this faction. Isn't that amazing? You know, I love that. You know how exciting when God's moving in the hearts of people. When you have a revival, you know, it's not about one person. It's about what God is doing in the hearts of people. And your testimony has brought tears to my eyes. You know, man, isn't that great? Somebody cared enough to go out and make that extra effort, and here he is in church today, almost waiting ahead on the sight of somebody who cared for his soul. You know, I had one psalmist who said, There's no way I cared for my soul. You know, tonight, that's why we're here. We're one beggar telling another beggar before we found bread telling people. I thank God I was blessed to grow up in a Christian home. And I tell you, I didn't have to make us go to church. We loved church. We loved revival meetings. Loved evangelists. You know, that was just kind of the highlight of the year, really. It was like the Super Bowl, you know? And I just thank God. We were poor. It was just like church mice. There were six kids we were poor so we could get out. But I tell you what, I remember I was a little boy. I had my own little horn, you know? I won't tell you. Because there was an evangelist. He blew up. He had a horn. And I would not get out in the middle. I wanted to be like him. I tell you what, that's the kind of heros you ought to be wanting your kids to have. My friend today, if you don't get them in church, if you don't build up the man of God, if you don't build up authority in your life, it will come back to bite you like you've never seen. Go ahead and teach your children disrespect to pastors, to the president, to police.

"You can't pour from an empty cup and before you give love to anybody else you have to truly love yourself And I think the easiest way to love yourself as a man is to be proud of yourself and to be proud of yourself You have to decide who you want to be inside of the metaverse inside of the matrix You decide the character you want to be and try your best to achieve it Why do you think people struggle with being proud of themselves? I think because they know they're failing I think that most people failing in life know very well they're failing and it doesn't matter what avatar you decide to absorb or Who you decide to be? You can decide to be it and you know true in your heart if you're giving a hundred percent of your energy towards becoming or Doesn't matter if you want to become a famous musician does not gonna come ball a bodybuilder doesn't make them come become a pro fighter It doesn't matter what you want to be You know in your heart if you're actually trying you have to decide what you want to be and try and become it and a lot Of the people who are genuinely unhappy or miserable in their hearts know they're not trying well And they also I think they also focus on what everyone else is doing right or wrong and then judging outward and everyone's like focus on this our reflection of like what that person has and versus what they don't have and it's all just like Cycle of negativity completely and it's just if we found ourselves especially with social media nowadays We found ourselves like most people because maybe they're not mentally strong enough to understand like wait I need to create my own value instead of looking outwards How do you think we fix it successful is all about self -definition which is what I was saying at the beginning We have to defy decide who you want to be and if you're if you wanted to be Joe Schmoe and you pull it off And you'll be a pretty happy content person to decide who you want to be I think the people who are miserable is the dip it's the gap between their expectations and their reality That's what the misery lies. My expectations were always enormously high even when I was a nobody I knew I had to be filthy rich and a kickboxer at the age of 15 I knew that if I'm the kind of guy that if I raise my voice people are gonna care I'm not gonna be the guy who starts shouting and everything's just funny I know I'm gonna be the kind of guy who's genuinely a formidable opponent all around the human endeavor I know I'm gonna have money People who are miserable are the people who don't try hard enough to obtain it because I actually believe and it's another thing I believe the universe is very giving I think the universe and God himself is very giving I've yet to meet someone years All my who is genuinely giving 100 % of themselves day after day doesn't snake anyone firm handshake Look you in the eye doesn't lie to nobody and tries 100 % doesn't get what they want I've never seen it every single person who doesn't have what they want There's something in their story that doesn't quite add up I've yet to see some guy who have you ever seen a guy who eats right trains his ass off and never misses gym session Ever not grow. It's just that's the way the universe works, right? So if you're truly about it, you're truly trying your absolute best You're gonna do it and I that's what I believe. I believe the universe is extremely giving So when I meet somebody and they go I really wanted this and I don't have that so you didn't really want all like the successful People most successful people in the world Would you say that all of them have have like something in common in the sense of like some sort of hardship in their life? It's not I mean trauma is extremely important and this actually goes back into answering the first part of your question, which is interesting There's a study I read about stress and it was saying that stress they Stress has a placebo effect attached to it because the placebo effect is extremely powerful So they found some of the most stressed people in the world and they split them into two groups and they're all equally stressed They all have a bunch of cortisol People who believed they were that stress was bad for you and that stress can hurt you and they believe those media articles We're dying earlier. They're having heart attacks and having stress related illnesses The people who believe the opposite who just said stress is part being successful I like stress when I feel stressed I do my best makes me anxious. It turns my brain I like being stressed lived longer than average point is the same drug how you look at it and how your body Anticipates it how you feel about it affects the real -world results, which goes back into what you were saying earlier about the jealousy You're saying people look on social media and they get jealous and it demotivates things That's because they decide to be demotivated by it Do you know what happens when I get jealous of somebody I fucking beat them If I look at somebody has something I got I will take it from them by hook or by crook. Well, then I love I wish someone could make me jealous. It's hard. Now. I got everything I wish I could look at somebody and go fucker would you say would you say jealous? He's the number one part for motivation? Well, I don't think motivation is a real thing, I don't believe in motivation it's a concept I think discipline is real and I also think discontentment is real and I don't think it's possible for anybody to stay in a scenario Where they're truly uncomfortable if you fall asleep on your arm and your arm really starts to hurt even in the deepest sleep You're gonna wake up and move your arm if you sit there and your life has been in a rut for seven years You are semi comfortable in that rut. Sure. There's days. You're pissed off sure You're semi annoyed by it, but there's also days when you just play video games eat pizza and you're kind of cool with it It's no big deal if you were truly Unhappy and uncomfortable and discontent with your scenario. You wouldn't be in it. So I think I don't believe there's anybody who's truly When I was broke, I couldn't sleep Sam. Please understand me when I was broke. I couldn't sleep I'd be trying to go to bed thinking How the fuck these people have Ferraris. I want a fucking Ferrari I couldn't sleep people aren't taught to be self -aware anymore People are taught to just like like I said look at that guy what he has and be mad that she don't have it Or like if something's going on with me I don't want to look inside and say what's actually happening with me. Why am I this way? Why am I the person that I am today everyone, but I want to figure out deeply How do you think a man specifically in this case is able to look at themselves more comfortably without? Holding the judgment the fact that they don't have the stuff over themselves because completely you're totally right I think there's two answers to the question one I think a lot that came from chess because chess is the most ruthless game on the planet and what chess will teach you Chess teaches you that if you lose at some point you made a mistake It doesn't matter if it's the smallest mistake It doesn't matter if you just took too long too long to think to make the right move and run out of time on the clock At some point you fucked up for you to lose that game. It's 100 % accountability with no luck That's what's so important about learning chess That's the first thing and the second thing is you need to as a man adopt the mindset that absolutely everything that happens to you It's completely an earlier fault whether it's good or bad Most men don't have that when the matrix was attacking me and they were destroying me and they're calling up My ex is trying to get fake fucking charges on me and put me in jail when they closed my bank accounts I use ten eleven million dollars when they banned me on all across all social medias and lie about me when they harassed my Family when did I'm sitting there going? This is my fault. All of this is me. I got here. It's my fault I'm not going that was unfair. It was orchestrated NGOs worked against me because that is not helpful. It's accountability It's a hundred percent accountability in all things, but also when I go out there and I start to Bugatti It's like that's me. It's Mike. This is my fault The car is my fault and the big house is my fault and everything that ever goes wrong Yeah, absolutely. You have to take complete in our accountability for everything. You can't make excuses ever There's never an excuse and you're right people try and put things on the outwork outwards on the outside. It's interesting I remember watching Forrest Gump about five years ago I was on a plane and coming where I was flying and the beginning of Forrest Gump has a scene in it when he's sitting On the bench at the beginning think about a Forrest Gump He's sitting on the bench at the beginning and there's a feather and on him and the movie begins what they're saying with that is Forest is the feather and life has just pushed him all over and put him in all these unusual scenarios Life has directed him everywhere That's what that's what it's saying And if you're gonna be the guy and you're gonna allow life to happen to you and you're not gonna happen to life Then you're at mercy of the wind. Perhaps it might work out. Okay, but it might not right So you have to be the guy who goes? Okay, the winds blowing in this direction. Fuck them. I'm doing this You have to come to life You can't let life come to you because if you let life come to you Then you're gonna be living inside of a matrix and a system which is designed not for you to live your best life It's designed for you to comply How do you think men can build more confidence in like deciding their life instead of just letting be decided for that? Yeah, so they have to take absolute responsibility, which is the first thing the second thing they have to get competence and competence It's gonna allow you to have confidence. You're not gonna be good at shit. You're bad at shit You have to be good at things. You're only gonna be confident things if you're good at things I know what I'm good at and what I'm bad at So you have to go out there and take risks you have to make mistakes and you have to risk it all and and once Again, this comes down to competition. I think competition is such an important thing in the masculine world I grew up in the chess world, but I went fighting world was all extremely competitive. It's competition driven You can't make excuses if I sit here and say I lost a fight cool You lost a fight, but I lost a fight but my gloves when they were wrapped up my gloves My hand was hurting and then excuses like you have to understand that excuses don't matter Nobody cares life's binary winners or losers and you just have to take absolute responsibility for people are so caught up when things happen This is why this happened to me because of this because my childhood cuz my past trauma cuz my life whatever But people are so not taught to like look inwards and go towards those things Well, I think I think victim playing victim is a it's an easy way out. Yeah, it's it's a lazy This is an easy way out It's a good excuse and it also makes you feel better about yourself me and my brother have another thing We do we do this all the time if either of us are ever complaining about anything We say we have this we shut each other up and saying what do you want therapy? If you don't want therapy what you're talking the main reason people complain about things is to get a dopamine rush, right? I'm unhappy but if I sit there and I complain about it and you give me a little bit sympathy I feel better dopamine That's why they're complaining for dopamine if someone comes to me and complains about something It's the best thing I can do for them because I'm a philanthropic nice man. I'm mr. Nice. It's time to get fucked I don't care shut up But a lot of this comes down to your social circle because there's a whole bunch of guys out there whose friends accept excuses If your friends will allow you to make excuses, you're gonna make excuses if you're a family and let you make excuses You're gonna make excuses. You're gonna complain and feel better You gotta be around killers who don't accept that shit if I have a good me and my let's say me and three friends There's four of us and we all decide to do 10 ,000 push -ups a day and all of us do them except one There's no words inside the human language There's no sentence He could possibly construct my how compenduous or concise or how intelligent the man is that will allow us to forgive him failing Don't accept excuses.

A highlight from $17.7 TRILLION IS COMING FOR YOUR BITCOIN | SB Originals

"I've recorded at least a couple of videos at this point talking about not selling your Bitcoin to BlackRock, how the institutions are coming, Fidelity, BlackRock, ARK, etc. The big players are coming and they want your Bitcoin. And I get the impression that many of you don't really appreciate why Bitcoin is so special, why the institutions do want your Bitcoin and will pay you whatever price they can to get it, and why selling it is the absolute last thing that you want to do. This article from Forbes is titled a fast growing 17 .7 trillion, that's T, trillion, Wall Street crypto earthquake is suddenly hurtling towards the Bitcoin and Ethereum price. Let's ignore that latter part, the Bitcoin price. Bitcoin has been thrust into severe uncertainty in recent months. Okay, first off, no, it hasn't. Maybe uncertainty if you don't understand Bitcoin, but this is baby sleeping time. This is not a time of uncertainty. These don't times matter in the grand scheme of things. The price dip and change from this to that is all irrelevant. It's all going to zero. And Bitcoin, on the other hand, is going up forever. So for the next little bit of the article, it talks about how the price has rose and dipped. And it's just a kind of a bunch of nonsense. But then it down here talks about Franklin Templeton. Franklin Templeton filed with the U .S. Securities Exchange Commission, the SEC, this week for a spot Bitcoin ETF, joining a flurry, that's an understatement, of applications that was kicked off by the world's largest asset manager. That's right, BlackRock in June and includes Fidelity, Invesco, Galaxy, Wisdom Tree, who between them manage 17 .7 trillion worth of assets. You have to realize that that's not really what matters. It's not that amount of money going into Bitcoin. It's what that signals to everyone else, because that 17 .7 trillion, yes, is under control by those asset managers. Yes, but you know what else happens when the big boys do things? Everybody else pays attention. So you get all these family offices going, wait a second, I'm sorry, BlackRock did what? They put what where? Oh, so, OK, I guess that's what we should do. This happens in every arena around the world. You can see it in literally everything. If a movie does something, other people try and copy it. If a technology does it, iPhones, for example, everybody else tries to copy it. So when BlackRock and Fidelity and Invesco, when they do move into the space and it is coming, they wouldn't all be filing for this just to do something to do because they're so bored. No, they're doing this because they want a piece of that. And why do they want a piece of it? Let's cut to something that seems completely unrelated. Post Malone has bought Magic's two million one ring card. And this is from the guy that found it. I believe he was in Toronto, Canada. When I found the one ring, the first person who came to mind was Post Malone. I have played Magic since I was a kid, and obviously it would be amazing to keep this card. But for a guy like me, being able to sell it is a life changing. I just really hoped it would go to someone who would appreciate it as much as I do. This is my dream come true. Meeting Post Malone and him buying the one ring from me is literally a moment straight out of a fairy tale. Post Malone, at Magic the Gathering, you have changed my life. Things like this don't happen to people like me. I guess it's Magic. I am forever grateful. In the past few months, Post Malone was on with Joe Rogan, and Joe Rogan asked him about that. And Post Malone was like, yeah, I did spend that much money on a card, and Joe Rogan doesn't get it. But here's why he did that, because it's the only one that will ever exist. And you might say, yeah, but Dell, you can go over to TCG player and get one for here. Look, with the 37 bucks right here, the borderless one, here's a different version for 60 bucks, 50 bucks, whatever this one, 100 bucks. So you don't need to spend two million dollars on it. Okay, no, you don't to actually have that card in your deck and can play with it. Sure, you can spend 50 odd whatever bucks on it and get it. But to get the exact one that Post Malone spent $2 million on, the one of one, that exact version, no, you do need to spend $2 million to get it or whatever Post Malone is selling it for now. If you've ever experienced a banking kerfuffle, to put it mildly, like I have, then there's a really good chance you already know the importance of Bitcoin. But you might have other questions. Maybe you don't feel quite as secure with your self custody setup as you would like to. Schedule a free 30 minute consultation call and they will help you solve whatever it is that you have about Bitcoin. Don't let a question keep you up at night. Call the Bitcoin way. At this point, I imagine you're wondering at least two things. Those are, what in the world happened with the banking story? What is Magic the Gathering have to do with this at all? And number three, so why in the world does Fidelity and BlackRock, why do they actually want that? Let me go through these. First off, why does BlackRock and Fidelity and all the big players, why do they want Bitcoin? Here's why they want Bitcoin. This one's from at BTC salvation. He says owning one Bitcoin is rare. How rare is it rare than the Magic the Gathering card? No, it's not quite that rare because there's only one ever in existence of that. But here's how rare it is. It's like owning roughly 25 pounds of gold or 107 acres of land in the US or roughly 1754 acres of land in the world or roughly 6 .7 houses in the US or roughly 109 houses in the world. And what has BlackRock been buying? It's homes. What has Bill Gates been buying? It's farmland. What do the people in power, what do these large players in the financial space want? They want, ladies and gentlemen, if you haven't figured it out by this point, I'm not sure what to tell you, but I'll tell you, they want scarce assets. They want the things that there is only a limited amount of. And what will there only ever be 21 million of? Bitcoin. That's right. There will never, ever, ever be more than that. What if somebody else forks it and they make a whole new thing called Bitcoin too? They've done that. It's trash. It's garbage. It's going to zero. It's all going to zero. You can only find perfect digital scarcity once. It's not possible to do it again. Anything else that's a copy of it is, oh, I already told you what it is. It's a copy of it. That's what it is. There is, you can't do it again. Bitcoin is true digital scarcity and anything else that comes along after it is a copy. So now what does this have to do with magic, the gathering and rarest things and scarce things? And well, let's jump over to something else that seems completely unrelated. I've had hedge fund managers, like, reach out to me on LinkedIn to be like, hey, like, could you talk to us about TCGs? Like, we want to know how they work. Like, that's an experience that I'd never had before. Do you see it yet? Are you starting to understand? Am I painting the picture clear enough for you that the power is to be how much of the pie they want? They don't want the tin. They don't want the crust. They don't want that nice top with the different funny shapes cut into it. They don't want the juicy filling. They definitely don't want the bottom. No, they want the whole damn pie. Every crumb, last every single little iota of the pie. If that includes card games, hedge fund managers are going to call card game designers and ask them, how can we get it on that pie? They want all of the pies, every last one. They're going to show up to the marine calendars and just give me the pie. Every last one. They definitely want the Bitcoin pie, every single one. So if that means contacting old Gary Gensler and saying, hey, get this approved, don't do that. If it means contacting drone pal and Janet Yellen saying, hey, print us all of the money ever so that we can entice these goons out of selling every last Bitcoin that they have so that we control and not they because they're just peons. They're just silly people. They don't know what to do with their money. They're clueless. They don't know. We know that's how we got here. Clearly, we're the best players in the room. We know what we're doing with the money. We're the ones in control. Let us have all of it. Print us as many Chuck E. Cheese prize tickets as you possibly can. All of them. Trillions of them. It doesn't matter. Who cares what the debt is? It just goes up and up and up. It doesn't matter. Give us more so that we can buy the Bitcoin off of them. They keep on kicking the can down the road and behind them, the road is crumbling. And where's the new road come from? They're just laying it as they go. And at some point they will stop to catch their breath and everything will come crumbling down. But guess what's under that road? Bitcoin. That's where everything falls to. Everything falls onto the shoulders of Bitcoin. And Bitcoin has some real strong shoulders. Let me tell you what. So where does my story end? My story ends with my banking crisis being averted. I finally talked to somebody that had since they knew how to solve the problem. They said, yes, let me actually get you to the right department. I don't know why those three other people didn't do that. Got to the right department. I was helped by a lovely woman who got me back access to my bank account. So that was a harrowing few hours of that morning. But I eventually did get access to my bank account. But for those few hours, it was a sobering experience to realize that I could be completely cut off from all financial access. I couldn't pay anything that I wanted. Rent was coming due, couldn't pay that, got bills due, can't pay those. Forget about buying a coffee, which might be nice to have or a sandwich or whatever like that. That's irrelevant. But when the bills start going, hey, you owe us this. And then we start turning off the electricity and you don't have Internet and then you can't do this and you can't do that. It's a real big problem. So, yes, the crisis was averted. But there is a global crisis looming, an absolute catastrophic world shattering, meteor impacting the world style event coming to the monetary system. And if you don't have some heavy shoulders to fall upon, I don't know where the road goes when the road crumbles. And if you have nobody to catch you, I don't know what's under there. I think it's just an abyss that falls forever. That's not a place that I want to be. Is it a place that you want to be? No, I don't know. But here's what I do know. If you're here on Simply Bitcoin, the chances that you don't want to be in that precarious situation is pretty good. So get subscribed, learn about Bitcoin, understand how important it is, and the answers will fall into place. And you, ladies and gentlemen, might fall upon the shoulders of Bitcoin. And like I said, this is not the first time I've talked about this. So check out this video right there where I go over in another way the institutions coming for your Bitcoin, because they are. Ladies and gentlemen, they are going to try and get it from you. Guaranteed they want it.

Joe Biden Remains the "Great Divider" With Latest Speech in Arizona

"We continue with the hate -filled Divide America speech yesterday in Phoenix by the man who happens to be President of the United States. Did you ever think we'd be having debates in your stage of your careers? We're banning books. Oh my God. Oh my God. Okay, here we go. Here we go. They lie with the ease with which they, meaning all of the left. There is no leftist that does not use that phrase, that we're banning books. Is there anybody, anyone you know in your family, any liberal who doesn't believe that certain books should be banned from the use of children? Haven't books been banned for the use of children? Wasn't there always a children's section in a public library? That means that certain books were banned. That's the reason you had a children's section. That's what he's referring to, this fraud, this liar. Oh God. I went to Yeshiva Jewish Religious School until I was 19. Everyone who studies Judaism and anyone, I mean this is basic stuff within the Jewish learning world, knows that the ancient rabbi said that the Jewish state was destroyed and the temple destroyed. The Jews dispersed the great calamity or two great calamities of Jewish history prior to the Holocaust and the modern pogroms was because Jews hated each other for no good reason. As a kid, I heard this. We heard it all the time and it didn't mean much because we just didn't experience what's called sinat kinam, baseless hatred. That's what's going to happen in this country. The left is spreading baseless hatred at the right. I spread hatred of the left because the left has earned the epithet as all totalitarian movements have earned.

"But you can't even find a one. Republican vote for these voting rights. Spills should tell us. We're still whether it's mansions bill or somebody else's bill. We're still a long way from this passing. Unless there's some major filibuster reform joe at the risk of of being yelled at on twitter all day. This is a press release. I mean yes. It's important that democrats fifty of their own lawmakers around this compromise which was done by any cobra shower in joe mansion. They are still as you know. Ten republican short of getting this across the finish line in republican conference where not one Republican that. I've spoken to her. That i found as believes if anything like this is necessary. So they're not even singing from the same songsheet they're not working from the same set of facs and unless there is some action to rework the filibuster which joe manchin in houston cinema have said until there is of bled fit. They're not interested in doing Than this is not this is just going to be a vote that shows that all democrats are on the same page but this is no closer to law in any way shape or form. Is there any Jonathan lamar any chance. That after joe manchin this allowed to to put out his bill and do all the things that he thinks needs to be done. And if if the republicans run over mcgann dislike the republicans ran over him on the january six commission that he will work with the white house and others put together a filibuster reform a package at least for civil rights bills. That will do the same thing for civil rights. Bills that mitch mcconnell did for supreme court nominees. There is a chance. Joe in fact talks have intensified behind the scenes of the white house on this very subject matter senior aides. I've talked to say that. Though no final decision has been made there is growing momentum within the corridors of the west wing in the in the oval office to support some sort of filibuster change and work with those senators who have been resist that mansion chief among them but not alone. There are others. He often mentioned as we know is sort of the face of a group of more quote moderate democratic senators who have been resistant to perhaps say the size of reconciliation package or in this case and he changed to the filibuster. But yes as jake says this. Is this plant. Here is is a press release. It doesn't really stand any chance of actual passage We have no. We've heard from the president. Both publicly and privately to his closest advisers that he is not in support of a full abolition full removal of the filibuster but is amenable to some sort of change in amendment to it to tweak to it perhaps makina talking filibuster which just makes it more difficult to use or indeed we using some sort of narrow exemption changing it for a certain topic and said the voting rights. This is the greatest that to democracy since the civil war and there have been discussions now going to let this play out over a couple more weeks then. Yes i think we may see more talks about china. Make that exception to get something out there to protect voting rights. While they're working on that they're also working on paying for these big big bills they're talking about trillions of dollars. Democrats in the house presented a plan yesterday to pay for their social policy and climate change package by raising taxes by more than two trillion dollars larger than wealthy people and profitable corporations but this morning the new york times reports that plan quote. Stop well short of changes needed to dent the vast fortunes of tycoons like jeff bezos and elon. Musk or to thoroughly close. The most egregious loopholes exploited by high-flying captains of finance at aim to go after the merely rich more than the fabulously rich instead the times reports senior house. Democrats opted to be more mindful of moderate concerns in their party than of its progressive ambitions. The focus on traditional ways of raising revenue raising tax rates on income rather than targeting wealth itself to time continues. Bill dispenses with measures floated by the white house and senate democrats to tax wealth or too close off avenues that the super rich have exploited to pass on a lifetime of gains to their heirs tax. Free democrats cautioned. The proposal is likely to change. This is just out of one committee as it makes its way through congress. Joseph the top marginal tax rate is proposed to be raised to thirty nine point six from thirty seven percent. That as you know doesn't get at the way. The super wealthy incorporations make their money and avoid taxes. Why and we see it every year. I don't understand what's going on when you have the people riding the tax bill for the democrats saying they're concerned about moderates concerns. What do they want. Jeff bezos and amazon to keep paying zero dollars into is at a moderate concern or is that actually a lobbyists concern because over the past few years. They're corporations that have paid. Zero tax is in a year. And just over the past. Couple of years that includes amazon chevron avis delta ally lily. Gm goodyear halliburton honey honeywell ibm net flicks occidental. Petroleum owens corning salesforce. Us steel last year. Archer daniels fedex nike on and on and on our moderates really concerned that those corporations may actually have to pay millions of dollars in tech. Because right now they're paying zero and billionaires are continuing to figure out how to pay little thing hedge fund titans are paying taxes at lower rates than their clerical employees of the people who show further. Bentley's you think that's demagoguery. You think that's pop it now. It's not no. That's the fact billionaires capital. It doesn't get taxed. Workers wages do and so now democrats in congress are saying. We need to raise the taxes on people who are working but leave billionaires alone as they continue to amass capital and continue. Listen to me here. Listen to me here because everybody hates in coury distribution. That makes you a socialist. Doesn't it if you're a scheme that that redistributes wealth will let me tell you something and the world we've lived in over the past forty years has been the largest income redistribution scam in american history. And it's been the middle class that's been looted won't trillions keep flowing into the bank accounts of billionaires..

"You know it's important as you look at michael schmidt the picture. He didn't have such a busy weekend. Then he didn't fred over how room writer was going is back down the most explains lineup one of the most exquisite backgrounds. We've seen yet on morning joe. I think the doorknob to his last up perfectly. So we've we've proven are shallow. We are now mike. Why don't we let smart people talk. Which means why don't we like to the thing that shocks me talking about this conservative lawyer to second. But but the state of taxes and the five justices on the united states supreme court have allowed the state of texas to strip americans specifically women of a constitutional right that has been written into the constitution for fifty years over a procedural. Hang up and here. We are two weeks into it. How many days are we into it. Now we're this constitutional right has been stripped away from women and one of the largest states in the union. It really is remarkable that there's this this still hasn't been addressed so given the what you were just saying and the importance and the significance of what has happened. We went back and looked at. How did this happen. How was it that this bill came out of texas. And why did they come at a texas in how was it structured and was expressly written in a way to give the courts a very difficult time at stopping it. Was this a a concerted effort to do that and our reporting show that that was true that this legal mind. Jonathan mitchell a former scalia clerk a- largely unknown person in many legal circles someone who struggled to get a job in the trump administration someone who struggled to get a job in academia someone who spends enormous amount of time thinking about the law reading about the law came up with this device this structure inside of this law to make it more difficult for the courts to stop it and we found that not only had that happened in this bill and that there had been this effort to go into it but that it had actually started as far back as two thousand thirteen when mitchell tried this in a different bill coming out of texas when he was the texas state solicitor general and that he had written into that bill. What he thought was something that would bulletproof it. Which would stop it from being gutted by the supreme court brier in two thousand sixteen ruling on that clock him essentially instead not so fast. I'm not going to let that happen and gutted. The bill and mitchell vowed to himself at the time that if he ever got a shot again to have his hand in writing bill and abortion bill to could go before supreme court he would stop at nothing to make sure that it survived and data where we find ourselves two weeks into this bill. Going into law at lose. I don't you find it. Remarkable that two weeks for two weeks and the state of texas the constitutional right avenue abortion which has been been been on. The books has been written into the constitution. Since nineteen seventy three has basically been null and void in one of the largest states in the union. Again based on a procedural loophole. I i can't ever recall that and i can't. I can't wait to hear the whining by the same people this bill when a state like California are estate like washington state decides to ban handguns unconstitutionally based on a procedural hang up. This is a horrific precedent and conservatives should be just aware of that as progressives whatever you call it the vigilante bill the bounty hunter bell. I mean this is rough justice to that can be used in any number of different scenarios and it's a danger to everybody of every ideology including all of us you value having a of little. I think the five full votes at the supreme court to allow this to go ahead for the time being. He's interesting because q justice. John roberts was on the fall of the dissenting for here. We have a really good example of even though both we have a very conservative chief justice. It's not enough to prevent a majority. So this springboks going to hand this the constitutionality of this bill in full sometime in the coming weeks Let's watch very closely to see. What those other five do you get michael schmidt. Tell me about The nine eleven reports release and your story behind that so the biden administration by similar administrations before it had been under pressure from the families of victims of september eleven to release more documents more information about connections between the saudi government and the hijackers has long been a long standing question that the families in much of the public in journalists have had the great unanswered questions of nine eleven is how much of a role did the saudis have in helping the hijackers in planning it and late on september eleventh on saturday night about twelve hours after biden had been at ground zero the f. b. i. Release see a more than a dozen page document that laid out that as recently as two thousand sixteen the bureau was still investigating the ties between the saudi government and the hijackers and it gets into details about context that some saudi consular officials had with the hijackers leading up to the attacks. And how the the sort of aided them in terms of getting acquainted when they got into the united states in california now these details were were interesting and helped eliminate what was going on the documents. Were not smoking gun connections. That showed that the saudi government played it. Direct hand in the attacks Some of the families members at spoke out after this said they were very pleased that these documents came out. They expect for more documents to come out. And i think there's a feeling. Among sort of good government types in such that the more the government discloses about it the fuller picture that we have and the more that you know you can make your own determination and sort of move on or not with michael's greater all right. Michael thank you so much Important stories we appreciate it and also thank you for coming with what has to be visually arresting. I've seen since. "Thank you joe for for having me on today as we approach this anniversary there were moments of extraordinary heroism and the response to nine eleven inside the towers at at the pentagon and of course we all know the story of a flight ninety three where the passengers resisted rather than allow the plane to be to to strike probably the the capitol building that story became sort of lionized in in nine eleven lor but one detail encountered the my lemon commission before is that the group of passengers that was considering rushing the cockpit paused to take a vote before they did so The voted they deliberated and then they act it and nothing striking struck me as quite so so american. Is that the the notion of of pausing in the midst of this unfathomable stress and fear to engage in sort of a deliberate and delivered consultation like that that that struck me as one of the most american moments of of that early response carlos a this twenty year anniversary so important that our leaders Whether in politics are whether they're thought leaders reflect on twenty years. What we've gotten a right and what we've gotten wrong. It's so it's so important to look back and figure out as you said what parts of the test we failed. You reread these twenty. One books. somebody them so important. What was your takeaway are your takeaways from what we got wrong over the past twenty years the test of nine eleven that i that i write about in in the you mentioned is whether we can respond to this horrifying assault on america and still via meredith still uphold the values that we profess the very values that are leaders. Told us were were. The reason behind the attacks remember president bush on on the night of nine eleven said the reason we were targeted was because of our values because we stand for freedom and openness and opportunity and democracy and the rule of law yet in our in our prosecution of the war on terror. We didn't always display those high values. We sometimes revealed some of our our lowest impulses whether that was deception or brutality or overreach or even delusion we entered a necessary war in iraq turned a war of liberation to occupation there. We prolonged the war in afghanistan by being less than forthcoming about how that war was progressing as my colleague. Craig lot has on his book yet. Ghanistan papers engaged in the brutal interrogation of terrorism suspects as article in the in the senate torture report. The irony is that after spending so many years attempting to spread democracy around the world. Democracy at home deals weakened and the the same building that al-qaeda attempted to strike on september. Eleven thousand one and sale to the the us capitol building was assaulted by our own citizens. Twenty years later. David ignatius when. I ask at my colleague carlos about his essay which is extraordinarily every everyone should should take a look Nine eleven was a test. We failed in that carlier. Summing up i think the somber mood at the country has twenty years later as we as we look back not simply the tragedy of of nine eleven but at the ways. We responded and yet as you and i have discussed. That's not the whole story that there are lessons learned in this period. Could speak just a little bit about what you think. Those lessons are that are valuable for us. Going forward not a source of shame and embarrassment but but something we can build on. I think one of the one of the lessons we can probably draw from some of the documents. They came out of out of this period such as even the the. Us army marine corps counterinsurgency manual which essentially serves as as a word of caution on. You know what we're doing when we embark on these wars to try to remake the world wars the end of being insurgency warps And i think that in in some ways documents such as such as that one help. Us military and help our our. Our elected officials be more cautious before entering these kinds of of conflicts. I mean the the overarching tests that we passed that we did not fail is that there was not a second nine eleven scale terrorist attack in the united states and that's an enormous success. One one not of the one caveat. I would add to that though. Is that on nine. Eleven in the evening andrew card. Just mentioned the the president's speech that night he didn't say that the job of the united states was now to protect american citizens. He said it was to protect the american way of life and those american values. And i think in in that regard perhaps we were. We were somewhat less accessible colors. Of course nine. Eleven happened after a decade in which america being kind of impotent after the end of the cold war. A one of the things that it struck me happened. Bef- after those attacks in america realized it wasn't an inasmuch control of world events as it it thought it had been. Maybe some of those world events would have happened anyway. We always go to see the rise of china american. It being distracted from what was happening in asia because it got involved in the middle east but it was going to happen anyway and is some sensitive in the world around us. Nine eleven was a searing event for this country but the events of the world around us. The rest of the world happened as they were going to happen anyway. I think that you're seeing some of that. Now and it. It similar perhaps to that period before nine..

"Deck in nineteen ninety four and to see that tower collapse was incomprehensible and it changed me changed. Our nation. The department of homeland security didn't exist on two thousand and one and here. We are twenty years later. We've built back bigger I'm proud to say. I'm a trustee of this memorial here today and i think it's important that we learn the lessons of the past and honor the bravery and the suffering of those who who died that day. You as you said ran. This newly formed homeland security department under president. Obama the threat matrix. Something we hear about a lot and we've been talking this morning about how. The american military went to afghanistan prevented further attacks for twenty years on our soil which on september eleventh anything was possible. We assume we're going to be attacked again. And perhaps soon. What was that daily job. Look like nobody that look like free to sit down and have a spreadsheet in front of you but what the world looked like what. The threats were as. I saw the job. The cornerstone of our mission was counter-terrorism. Dhs was formed. And so that was my principle focus but in the course of the secretary's day you're concerned about terrorism. You're concerned about aviation security cybersecurity. Maritime security the coastguard. Andy was secretary of transportation when the coast guard was with him pre nine eleven immigration of course And just a whole range of things. I think it's important that one cabinet level person have eyes and ears on all those those different threats but terrorism and the threat of terrorism was my principal concern and the threat of terrorism has evolved greatly since since nine eleven guys. Joe has a question for you. Joe.

"Military establishment. They've been quite vocal about the prospect that there could be a revived tariff. Threaten afghanistan and the irony is lost on no one really that you're standing there on the eve of this extraordinary anniversary and we are still worried about the prospect of a terrorist threat out of afghanistan. Some things have changed for the better. In terms of intelligence sharing there was not much. The dots were there before nine eleven. It's just they want connected between the various intelligence agencies Often because of rivalries and bureaucracy and that has changed the nine eleven commission really did set a pathway for beshir intelligent sharing within the united states and between the united states and its allies. So we're we're better defended than we were on the eve of that attack. We can work with our allies. We can work with each other even if there is a resurgence of isis or al qaeda in afghanistan even if the taliban were to renege on saying that they don't want those foreign actors on their soil. I think that our intelligence communities would be better prepared to prevent an attack. But we're an extraordinary position where we're even contemplating that after twenty years trillions of dollars and so many lives american lives and foreign lives lost in afghanistan in that war david ignatius. Let's let's have you explain to viewers the situation right now who may be wondering why. The taliban is allowing americans and and allowing others to leave the country why there appears to be a modicum of cooperation. This time you talk about qatar but also they desperately need funds unfrozen. The united states is a no mood to do that until they get everybody out that they want. We've heard that china's going to be a natural ally. The chinese are wary. The chinese are wary of afghanistan sending warnings about terrorism. They're gonna give him thirty million dollars right now. for food maybe three hundred million But they they're not they're not jumping in there. So can you talk about. The situation is precarious getting people out. But also right now. If the taliban wants to set up a functioning government in afghanistan if they want to stay in power they need funds and they need them on frozen joe. The taliban is by winning. It inherited a situation for which there just to radically or prepared. This is a rural movement is drawn from the remote districts of afghanistan. That's where they were strong. At their height they never controlled more than forty percent of the country and in these twenty years of war. afghanistan has become much more an urban country. it's connected by cell phones. People watch television. They root for their favorite Soccer teams it's a it's a it's a place not all that different from from. Its neighbors. This very traditional government. Just look at them in their in their in their traditional garb Looking like what. They are typically a religious judges who've run sharia courts sitting in a cabinet trying to run a country that's gotten used to being modern. That's at cash. Flowing in eighteen million dollars of american money pumping up the afghan government at alone directly afghan- afghanistan exports about two billion dollars a year and product so the taliban have got to figure out how to how to be rulers of this country. I think for me. And mika being here in the pentagon on this Day before this anniversary. I think of all the thousands of americans who went to afghanistan the servicemen and women to try to take the fight to al-qaeda This is the place that it began as place was struck. Hundred and eighty nine. People died here as they died in new york In the beginning of this of the story the story ended in a way that shocked many of us with a sudden fall of the government in kabul and the taliban suddenly almost to their surprise show inheriting responsibility for the country. It'll take them many many months to learn. The question is as they're trying to learn. We'll they reach out for help to people who can help them. It's good that they asked the gutters to to reopen their airport. They have no idea. Run a modern airport but they asked for help. And we'll see in the in the days weeks months ahead whether whether they understand that they really now do depend on outsiders not not on their on their rural roots and how precarious David stay with us and still ahead on morning. Joe dr anthony. Bouchier is warning that americans are now getting infected with covert nineteen at ten times the rate needed to end the pandemic. We'll explain that. Plus more as we remember twenty years since nine. Eleven president george w bush. I learned of the september eleventh attacks while reading to a class.

"All twenty twenty because the mail in votes constant claims. The president saying that the only way i could lose is if they cheat that suggested that the outcome would be rigged and these claims all false regurgitated an amplified the conservative media night after night on on various talk shows or conservative radio and his followers heard it and many of them believed it and what we saw course then as the ballots went broke against them on trump's rage in particular when as has been reported several places when arizona was called i by fox news which is relied usually very friendly to the trump pause and he saw the night slipping away and we also know of course that he had warned because he such doubt about mail in ballots that he was wanting to focus on just the votes counted that day. Which at that moment showed him ahead and number of states. Of course that changed in the days ahead and began. We saw this several months that built the january six assault and the on democracy and the instruction at apple. And let's remember the big life cooked up in the room. As written through that book by rudy giuliani others has led us to this place of new voting laws in many states whose justification whose rationale is while there were irregularities in the vote so we need to change our laws. We'll talk much more about this. Do wanna turn to the pandemic now. Our concerns are growing over new covert infections with a number of daily cases doubling in the last three weeks. This comes as just over one hundred. Eighty four million americans are at least partially vaccinated with less than half the population fully protected. Nbc's miguel almaguer has more after a private zoom meeting with pfizer monday night. The and fda say they're still not enough evidence. Americans need a booster. The nation's struggling to get ninety eight million americans. Their first shot much last their third. And now there's growing concern over protecting the twenty eight million school age kids under twelve. Who are still likely months away from qualifying for a vaccine before heading back to campus. If you're not vaccinated prefer that s parents say they're frustrated by the conflicting messages and lack of planning the cdc says any student not vaccinated needs a mask at school but most states have no uniform plan to require them of the twenty five million children old enough for vaccination. Roughly a third are fully inoculated. Any outbreaks could lead to closures. Seem to be any planning being that right now and we're just setting ourselves up for failure for another chaotic school year with nearly twenty twenty thousand new covert infections reported in children last week. The state health officer in mississippi says ten children there are currently on life support because of the delta variant clusters cases at summer. Camp are fueling new worry. When school returns there could be a false serve. The threat is incredibly real. And we're already seen surges. In parts of the country where high pockets of unvaccinated people add to that an in-person school attendance of primarily unvaccinated children and you have an opportunity for these surges and hot spots as delta force is some hospitals to reopen covert awards. Cases are on the rise again in twenty seven states after outbreaks in rural then mostly unvaccinated communities. A troubling number of infections are now being detected in cities like saint louis new york and los angeles and evolving virus within emerging threat. Just as the youngest unprotected americans get ready to return to the classroom. Nbc's miguel almaguer with that report. Meanwhile the tennessee health department will halt all adolescent vaccine outreach not just for corona virus but all diseases amid pressure from republican state lawmakers this is according to an internal report and agency emails obtained by the tennessean this comes as republican officials. Nationwide or fighting efforts to boost. Us vaccination rates throughout throughout reach the paper reports that the health department must issue any information about vaccines staff are instructed to strip the agency logo off the documents. The health department will also stop all covid nineteen vaccine events on school property despite holding at least one such event this month additionally the health department will take steps to ensure it no longer sends postcards or other. Notices reminding teenagers to get their second dose of the coronavirus vaccine. It's just it's just hard to believe that. Were here all vaccinations by the way. According to the paper tennessee's average number of new cases per day has more than doubled in the past two weeks. The state is also detecting a growing number of infections from the delta variant and willie when you have mississippi when you have a dozen kids on life support my god. This is a republican party. That is self destructing literally what is wrong with them. You have health officials at least in this case bowing to political pressure when even further meek a news channel five in nashville got. At all on national immunization month which is august to the doctors in the medical officials said we typically put out a news release when to let people know to go out and get your shots not just for covert but on basic stuff polio measles mumps rubella hp things like that and they say per that commissioner do not put out that release so we're not just talking about covid for kids we're talking about not promoting vaccines period. That's where we are in this conversation. At least in the state of tennessee and the data shows that those who are in the hospital with covert now most of them are unvaccinated. So the science. It's proving itself to be right for those who are hesitant and still still ahead on morning joe. Even amid concerns about taliban resurgence new polling shows. "To be selected to the all star game as both a position player and a pitcher angels manager. Joe matt and confirmed yesterday that otani will both hit and pitch and next game at colorado's cores field. The only remaining questions are about the logistics of otani's appearance at the mid summer classic and whether the major league home run leader will start on the mound for the american league which would allow him to contribute both ways immediately as the pitcher and the designated hitter out to wimbledon now yesterday at the all england club was the last time. We'll see all sixteen. Women's and men's fourth-round singles matches scheduled on the same day eight time champs roger federer coming off a pair of knee operations last season and playing in his last grand slam tournament before turning. Forty is now the oldest wimbledon quarterfinalist in the open era as yesterday straight-set victory moves federer into his record extending eighteenth quarterfinal out the tournament. World number one novak djokovic also advance as winning in straight sets to make it his twelfth quarterfinal the all england club while continuing his pursuit of a calendar year grand slam joke of it seems a needs to win three more matches this week to equal the men's record at twenty major single titles currently shared by federer and rafael wad and jovan bitches and federer's final wimbledon a few years back one of the best. I think i've saying how incredible and let's go the women's side seventeen year. Old american coco goths wimbledon run has ended in the fourth round again falling in straight sets against twenty eighteen champ. Angelique kerber quantum rocco's born to run. You know that's your favorite song now. Born to ri- the boss's daughter is heading to tokyo. Can you believe this. Jessica springsteen daughter bruce springsteen has been named as a member of the us olympic equestrian team the younger springsteen was an alternate writer for the two thousand twelve us team in london and didn't qualify for rio in two thousand sixteen. She now makes her olympic debut as a member of the jumping squad. The twenty nine year old began riding horses at four years old on her family's farm in new jersey she's ranked third on the us writer list and twenty seven th in the world. What do you think about that. A lot of nervous moments for for you and for any parents who children do this well. It's that's congratulations. So let's turn to. This morning's must treat opinion pages for that. We bring in pulitzer winning historian and rogers chair and the american presidency at vanderbilt university. Jon meacham and former chief of staff to the d triple c adrian elrod. She was senior rate to hillary clinton and the biden presidential campaigns. And we'll start with paul krugman's latest for the new york times entitled. It's morning in. Joe biden's america krugman writes in part this at this point. We have enough data in hand to declare that the economy is booming. In fact it's booming so strongly that republicans have pivoted from claiming falsely that we're experiencing the worst job performance in decades to loud the employment numbers in giving credit to trump's 2017 tax cut. The economy is running hotter than it did during the morning in america. Boom that gave ronald reagan a landslide victory in the nineteen ninety-four presidential election. We've gained three million jobs since biden took office or six hundred thousand jobs. A month this compares with gains of three hundred and forty thousand a month in the year leading up to one thousand nine hundred eighty four elections so yes. We are having another morning in america and by deserves more credit for his good morning than reagan ever did or his. Wow that is surprising conclusions. Jon meacham though. I you know whenever i hear the term morning in america the phrase. I always think back not to not to the landslide. Victory were reagan. One forty nine states but the year. Before when ronald reagan's popularity was upside down. He was when he gave a state of the union. He had a forty two percent approval rating in a fifty seven percent disapproval rating. Even going into the fall. John glenn was ahead of him by ten points. Mundell was ahead of him and matchups for the coming year right as as the primary season was starting to heat up so much can change in a year but right now the economy's does seem to be going in the right direction for joe biden. It is one greek question about this example that unites about is reagan could build to a victory of forty nine states. Talk buddy forty. Nine states residents will victory. Now it's as if we're talking about through modeling right. I mean it's just it's so remote. It's it's genuinely mathematically impossible No maybe not that bad. But it's culturally possible. And i think one of the things that throws back to is about the structural partisanship of the era of how many people in in our politics is going to turn on this question of the next five to ten years. How many people are actually movable by the kind of data the kind of facts that krugman writes about. You know whether you voted boerum or against him. Last time are are you as a as a participant in the american process. Are you willing to actually change your mind based on changing circumstance. Which by the way is what we were supposed to do. It was one of the inside so the founding wasn't reason would have a chance against passion. So i don't know what that number is. I don't know if it's five million amount of its ten million of the seventy four million people who voted for president but is a really interesting question. How many folks will actually be moved by back there. It really is. It's still surprising to me. Seventy five million. Americans voted for a guy who was calling for the arrest of his opponent two weeks before the there were so many other things that donald trump did as president that People would have run away from any previous time. But bid adrian. The does seem john's right The political world that we live in now is radically different than the political world. At least said i've grown up in ronald reagan elected twice by landslides. George h w bush elected by a landslide. Then the same people that elected reagan twice elected bill clinton twice those reagan. Democrats came home and helped elect reagan bill clinton twice then helped elect george w bush twice then helped elect barack obama twice. And by the way. Brian bob wasn't like he. He went in the squeaker. I think he's the first democrat to win with over a majority of votes two times since fdr the guy was rolling up tallies fifty three percent. There were massive shifts. These last two elections so people have seemed to have their political feet stuck in cement. Not a lot of crossover voters. Yeah i mean. I think joe meacham brings up a really smart point. Which is is this actually going to be what makes some you know. Republicans who have been you know. Maybe some who actually supported the insurrection. Or sam who have been with trump twice but it with them try twice. Is this going to actually swing them back our direction because not only is the economy. Good joe is you know. But joe biden has created more jobs in the first five months of his administration in the history of job creation in america so really great stats on his side. What does that mean for his reelection. Of course that's a couple years away..

If a group like al qaeda has a haven in afghanistan to plot act of international terror the september the eleventh attacks on the united states prompted the us led invasion to combat the threat that twenty years on as american and british forces drawdown a former spy. "Morning for me as brown start your day with msnbc daily at msnbc dot com. We try to make it very clear that there's obviously from all of the signs all the facts all the deductions we can make. There's no evidence that there is some sort of organized or widespread effort to defraud the election. We saw chaos confusion That only just heightened all of the attention and the misunderstandings that were going on this trust. And some i report really tries to express just the spiraling out of control. That happened there at times. And there's plenty of blame to point in both parties directions. But i just find it particularly troubling to me and it was saying that i really wanted to show in this report that maya party Some people within it. Some people representing it made this critical mistake in judgment and it caused more harm than good last month. The michigan senate oversight committee released a report on the twenty twenty election saying quote found no evidence of widespread or systematic fraud in michigan's prosecution of the twenty twenty election. The committee chaired by republican state. Senator ed mcbroom released the report after conducting nearly thirty hours of public hearings listening to testimony from eighty seven witnesses and reviewing more than four hundred pages of testimony former president. Donald trump called the report quote cover up and an attempt. To hide the truth. Staff writer at the atlantic tim. Alberta profiled senator mcbroom in his latest piece titled the senator who decided to tell the truth and tim joins us now along with national political reporter for axios jonathan swan. Good morning to both tim. You wrote this of committee chairman. Mick mcbroom quote. His committee interviewed scores of witnesses. Subpoenaed and review thousands of pages of documents dissected that procedural mechanics of michigan's highly decentralized election system and scrutinize the most traffic claims about corruption at the state's ballot box in november mcbroom conclusion hit lansing like a. It was all a bunch of nonsense. Mcbroom told you quote. I can't make people believe me. All i can hope is that people use their discernment and judgment to look at the facts. I've laid out for them and then look at these theories out there and ask the question. Does any of this make sense tim. It is such a fascinating and important piece Let's take a step back and talk about. Senator mcbroom himself who he is where he is on the political spectrum and why he thought it important to take these eight months to develop this report. Really you know it's interesting. This is a guy who has a lot of credibility with republicans with conservatives not only in his caucus but in his district up in the upper peninsula of michigan. He's a dairy farmer by trade. In fact he's still operates his family's one hundred old dairy farm. And this is a guy who's a conservatives conservative. He got into politics largely animated by the issue of abortion and wanting to protect farmers. And this is somebody who you voted for. Donald trump's who talk to me at length about how happy he was the policy outcomes of the trump administration. How worried he has been about the early days of the administration. So this is not something rhino. This is not somebody who's sort of soft and who's been attempting to undermine trump from within his own artists This is a guy at the same time though. Willingness who's really known as sort of a choirboy Literally he directs his church choir up in the upper peninsula and when you talk to republican colleagues of his. There was always a sense that that that anybody was going to really shoot straight on this issue and was going to pull punches and get to the bottom of this and then tell the truth no matter how inconvenient it may be than ed mcbroom was going to be that guy and for that reason. Frankly there was some nervousness when he took this investigation because a lot of republicans knew that he might not Broadcast exactly what they were hoping. I guess the question now is choirboy dairy farmer going to be censored by the party. Is he going to be driven from. The ranks is he. Going to be primary later. They're already protests against him for actually telling the plain and obvious truth that same truth. That william bar sad when he was asked to investigate these claims the same truth. That rudy giuliani was forced to say when he finally getting federal court and said no. You're honored this is not a fraud case the truth time and again that republicans win under oath and even trump's on attorneys had to tell judges. Now there's no widespread voter fraud. Is he going. Is he going to now get thrashed politically. for telling the truth. he'll he'll be thrashed politically. He's already beings rash politically starting his own district. This is a guy who represents a very conservative part of the state of michigan. And he's dealing with constituents and family friends people. He's known his entire life who are attacking him telling him that. He's been bought off by china that that he is in league with the deep state and frankly a century from his own party is sort of pretty low on his list of concerns. Right now. I mean well. We talked he. He was not in the direction of his rifle cabinet in his house. Talking to me about the calls in the middle of the night threatening his family. And so i don't know that this is a guy who's nearly as concerned about some of the political ramifications or in the abstract as he is about what might happen when the people who are so convinced that this election was stolen. And who believe that. There is an illegitimate democrat in office right now. They are approaching the brink of civil war. She and i talked about in the piece. He talked about people. He's encountering in his district who are talking about. It's time to rise up. It's it's it's time perhaps for a for a legitimate civil conflict. Here those are the things that that senator mcbroom talk to me about. That are really urgent for him. I don't know that he's terribly concerned about being stripped of some committee assignment or being punished by politicians in lansing because ultimately term limited have only be there for a couple more years anyway. He's much more worried about where this is taking all of us in the country in his community the people he knows who he feels like are perhaps lost permanently to these conspiracy. Yeah and they are conspiracy. Theories i mean i i get people sending me conspiracy theories from you. Know chinese colts and websites. That they've set up is really something. Jonathan swan though that whenever any of these lies are exposed to the light of day. They wither immediately. Giuliani held press conferences outside of federal court houses saying oh there's widespread fraud then they would go inside. Courthouses and giuliani would be asked by a judge. I mean specifically requesting the us district judge. Matthew brand giuliani admitted. This is not a fraud case. Trump lawyers saying the same thing this is an in arizona. Are you saying that. There's any fraud in connection to these disputed ballots to my knowledge at present. No said the lawyer. The lawsuit was was convinced. Time and again trump pr flax and giuliani would allege fraud. Outside course at courthouses they would go inside of courthouses and say no fraud your honor because they knew they couldn't lie in front of a federal judge and here you have somebody that's investigated this for months and months and again in the light of day these conspiracy claims that that russians and chinese.

"As i mentioned this is a this is a real milestone ballroom. Has been the almost the hallmark of us military presence in afghanistan for these last twenty years. It's where it's been one of the largest if not the largest space it's been a relatively safe airfield. It's the fact that the us turned it over to afghanistan. It really shows that this is the close to the very very close to the end of the us military presence there in afghanistan. All right courtney kuby thank you so much we appreciate your reporting gene robinson. This is obviously a move. That's unpopular with many in the pentagon unpopular with. I would say the majority of the us foreign policy establishment. They're rising fears of civil war in afghanistan rising fears of an ultimate taliban takeover. But this is something that if you read the tea leads. Joe biden was ready to get out of afghanistan a long time ago. He opposed barack obama's surge about a decade ago This was regardless of what the general s- thought. This seemed inevitable. I i mean you can. You can imagine that if we had waited another five years or another ten years to take the step we'd be having the same discussion and the same fears The because the taliban is still there right. They live there. They're going to be there. They're always going to be a presence in In afghanistan or at least for the foreseeable future and it is I think we're going step back At some point i am. We're going to look and we're going to say what did what did we accomplish in afghanistan. But what did we actually do. We manage to to to slide a regime that had harboured al-qaeda remember that's why we went in there in the first place and and the and the people had harboured the people plan nine eleven And we did that with relative dispatch and then the the remaining nineteen years of our our involvement. There i. maybe. I'm just kind of looking at the glass half empty this morning but but one does wonder. What did we actually accomplish. What did our blood and treasure actually purchase and afghanistan. And that's not. That's not an easy answer. i don't have an easy so gene. Let me just follow up on that briefly. It's a great question a question that many people are asking. It's something we could've asked when we left iraq and when we left iraq overnight of course we saw exactly what we were accomplishing their. We've been in germany since nineteen forty five following world war two. We've been in korea since one thousand nine hundred fifty to stop the north from invading the south and keep that democracy intact. I guess the question that joe vines going to have to answer. And policymakers left to answer is. Are they responsible for what comes next. When four thousand five thousand troops may have prevented mass chaos in afghanistan. Well you know. That's i think that's that's a good question on the other hand It's hard to compare afghanistan with germany or japan or south korea with societies that That that did develop into work early. democracies that participated in in in on the world stage in a responsible way That that that managed to to govern their spaces there within their borders in a in an effective way And and so yes we the. Us presence i think was was certainly a factor in that but the us presence more To to guard against potential threats rather than to nation build the nation building in in germany japan and and correa are you believe is really really successful. The nation building in afghanistan which we never really wanted to acknowledge that we were trying to do and therefore never really tried to do all out was not successful. And i don't think we built a successful state. That's going to be another germany. Another japan another career. Claire mccaskill one thing we can say is that american troops men and women who bravely gone over. There have prevented another attack on american soil over the last twenty years so we should point that out. You're united states. Senator for twelve years during the height of this war in afghanistan in terms of what comes next. We're already seeing it. The taliban is retaking ground. They carried out that school bombing. And may that killed eighty five people in west kabul. So that's a preview of what is coming here. What are your feelings. What are your thoughts. What's your position on this withdrawal as we watch it. Take place overnight at bagaram. Well it was inevitable if you think about the country of afghanistan. Let me pick up. Where jean left off the the reason that the nation building and primarily the the billions and billions and billions of dollars. We have spin in afghanistan. Not only do we try to rebuild their infrastructure we also tried to install instill rule of law to train police officers to train their military and what people need to understand that unlike japan and germany and south korea. This is a country that really didn't have any gdp if it wasn't for our money. This is not a wealthy country. This is a country that is not rich with natural resources or a strong education system. This is not a country that was ever prepared to stand on its own without america propping it up so this is going to be some. There's gonna be some bloodshed. Of course there will be civil strife between the factions within afghanistan. I think the military strongest argument over the years about staying there was really as much about pakistan is it was about afghanistan. People need to remember. Pakistan has nuclear weapons and pakistan is You know there is. There are elements of the taliban and other bad guys that have migrated into pakistan. So this is always going to be a sticky wicket in terms of this part of the world because the factionalization very strong religious beliefs in the middle east. But i always said we have wasted. Just a ton of money in afghanistan trying to do something that the military just didn't want to admit they couldn't do. We'll see i guess this is again. And we're we're all going to have differences of opinion here but i think the men and women that served over there did great things over the past twenty years and sacrificed greatly and they prevented another attack on the united states. That's why we went in there in the first place. They did the best they can do with a country. That is dexter filkins. Sold as well over a decade ago was many parts of it. Seemed like it was still stuck in the second century. And guess the question is and this is a question for foreign policy. Experts and for for advisers to presidents to debate and members in the senate and the house debate but is the united states capable of keeping twenty five hundred three thousand four thousand troops in afghanistan if that prevents a complete meltdown of a country. That was actually used to watch attacks on america on september eleventh. The same thing clear could be asked again about iraq. Would it have been worth it.

"Twenty eight past the hour beautiful shot from the top of the rock in new york city as the sun comes up on this wednesday morning or already thursday the chaotic race. It's thursday for new york city. Mayor took another turn yesterday. One day after the city's board of elections released and then rescinded new results in the democratic primary contest. New numbers show former city sanitation. Commissioner catherine garcia who is behind by thirteen points previously now trailing former police captor captain. Eric adams by just two points. These numbers are largely in line with the fall to results released on tuesday the b. o. a. b. o. e. later called the mishap to quote unacceptable error when one hundred and thirty five thousand test votes that were meant to be cleared from its system were reported in the vote count. This prompted a lawsuit from the atoms campaign. yesterday it announced it is petitioning. The court to quote preserve our right to a fair election process. More than one hundred twenty thousand. Absentee ballots. Still remain unaccounted for as the city uses a ranked choice voting system for the first time. What a mess here. Now with more in that city hall and politics reporter for wnyc. Bridget bergen and bridget. I could see how the candidates would be getting pretty stressed out at this point wanting the numbers to be counted and counted right and the people of new york as well absolutely. Mika i mean i think one of the most important things when we look at those tallies though to remember is that these are just interim results. The results that were released this week. Were never intended to be the final results and while the error made by the board of elections was egregious and is understandable that it would shake the confidence voters and the candidates. The good thing is that they identified it before it was part of any additional tallies or certainly any certification process. The other part to remember is while the race has narrowed significantly with eric adams with only a two point lead over catherine garcia maya wiley. The tally says eliminated. She was only behind catherine garcia by about three hundred forty seven votes and as you said there were one hundred. Twenty thousand outstanding absentee ballots. That are not included in that tally and so we are very fair to say that this race is still wide open still being that still very much alive and even those lawsuits while that is something that procedurally candidates do rather routinely. It's a product of new york state election law. They have to file these orders in order to protect the right to challenge any ballots within ten days of the primary. So that would be to friday and so these are preempted actions. But they don't necessarily speak to anything that has happened so far. It just guarantees that these candidates have a right when they are canvassing. These absentee ballots to raise objections. And had they not smith those orders. They wouldn't be able to do that. Bridget as you said my wiley is not going to drop out of the race. And why on earth would she. If you have garcia trailing by only two percents eric adams and then my wallet trailing badly three hundred forty seven votes with one hundred and twenty thousand absentee out there so as this process worked. How could my widely be declared eliminated. Well what they were doing was giving us our first look at what the ranked tallies looked like and so just to be clear on primary night we saw a snapshot of how voters identified their first choice votes. This was the first time we saw when they took into account people second through fifth choice votes and showed us the tallies using this ranked choice algorithm. And so this again. It's a snapshot we have additional votes. That need to factor into this total. One of the things is looking at. Where some of these absentee ballots are coming from if you were to try and do a little bit of a game analysis. A lot of these absentee ballots are from manhattan. That's where catherine garcia won the largest share of the votes however there are also votes coming in obviously from all five boroughs. I think one of the things will be watching is as we see the next tally which is expected on next tuesday july sixth. How much do these numbers change. Because the one thing that is certain is that these numbers will change. Virgin and richard haass the company who manages the software used in the election tells. Nbc news at the board of elections repeatedly denied it's offers of assistance according to the ranked choice voting resource center the b. o. e. refused to accept training education. A blind review and an offer to run parallel tabulation for the primary company says it continued to reach out via email phone calls and even an in person visit but those efforts were ignored. Abo spokesperson told nbc news. That's board of elections quote. The software was not the issue. Adding the problem was human error. I don't know what makes me feel better. Richard haass up. What do you make of this thing should make you feel better about this. This is incompetence on steroids. This is corruption on strikes. The people on this committee of the board of elections should not be there. These are political hacks who are totally unqualified to oversee anything. They should be overseeing their breakfasts. Then you have this. Why in the world is the board of elections releasing these results which are meaningless. Until you've counted the absentee ballots. How can you possibly release Votes or numbers about Ranked choice voting. The they have no meaning. They have no no standing. This is a deeply flawed system. Unfortunately it's going to be extraordinarily hard to fix. It's not in the purview of the next mayor or the governor. But this this this michael kinsley once said what scandalous is what's legal. This is a scandal for the people of your and it's not going to make life easy but the next mayor who quite possibly is going to begin with some kinds of cloud and brigid. This is not of course. The first time it'd be away has publicly displayed it's incompetence you can go back through the last several elections and find problems there but you know ranked choice voting has its proponents. Is this the end of ranked choice voting in new york city. Perhaps based on how this has been rolled out and just basically on how long it's going to take even under the best of circumstances to determine a mayor. Well again i think is not going to be the end of ranked voting because this is a voter-approved ballot referendum and so to end it would require voters approving an initiative to repeal it. There is propose legislation to do that. But i think we're a long way from that point. Certainly there will be a very critical review from lawmakers the local and state level about how this election was run and to what degree rules need to change to account for ranked voting as part of the process. But in terms of the timing. I mean it is important to remember that the timing here in terms of getting the full. Incomplete results is a product of state election law. It is a product of win. The board of elections is allowed to count absentee ballots. There is a push to end legislation. That has been passed at the state level. That would allow for absentee ballots to be counted sooner. And that could help speed up this process but again at this point it's not really the ranked choice voting tally that slowing things down. It's the rules around how we conduct elections the way. We mail out ballots when we're allowed to count them. That is really. What is hard of this slowing up. This process. All right city hall and politics reporter for wnyc bridget. Bergen thank you very much and coming up a lot going. On with the new york times learned about the capital riot after analyzing thousands of videos of the attack plus a new ranking of the us presidents by their leadership ability. "But i wanna go back about five years to the rise of the tea party because this rank and file was egged on by the leaders right now who are wringing their hands of bemoaning. The fact that they can't straighten the course of the gop day. So the steeds a while ago. They let rank and file members who were far extremes of the republican party. Take that party in run with it. They got to the point where they said. Wait a minute we've bob. Alright we wanna pull it back but it was already out of their hands so understanding that rank and file was empowered by the folks who we see now wanting to pull the party back and looking at like pants who is the poster child conservativism and religious services to. I'm not surprised at the heckling. You know the first point is obviously that he did not support. Donald trump in january incident. He stood apart from him. But the other thing and i think this is more of a political marketing. Political strategy piece is it. Hasn't been part of the cool kids group of governor greg abbott here in texas have rhonda santos and florida throw in juicy of eileen on another major hiller of the republican trump party which is bashing the border. We saw the build the border wall rhetoric. Coming in two thousand fifteen number really led up. We've seen a resurgence of that. So he is also not on the front lines of the branding of the republican party. On those rule. Filler donny deutsch. It's not just that. Mike pence is opposed to conservatism but up until january fifth. He did everything possible to get as close as possible to donald trump. he was almost a parody of loyalty. You know mocked in the media for just following in the footsteps of of donald trump and yet of course now he navigates this as he tried to see what his political future might be. Someone rumored to at least be looking to run for president. So i wanted to ask you this looking at how things are not how things we should they should be. We're seeing now. Donald trump about to reemerge. He's going to be how old rally in coming days. He and bill o'riley going on tour this fall. Get your tickets now. And that we're seeing republicans like pants or nikki haley. Who maybe even broke with him. Just once on january sixth really feeling the wrath of trump divo- tastes if you were looking at these republicans who are trying to figure out what to do next who have is on the white house. How do you possibly navigate this right now. I was just a couple of other data points about the state of the republican party. It's just economist. Yougov just capital poll where they would ask favorability. Ratings of joe biden bottom has a ninety percent favorability rating with trump. Voters and joe biden has a nine percent. I want to say that again. Putin's favorability rating with trump voters twice. What binds is. What else do you need to know about the death of conservative and the death of the republican party as we know it i i the answer is and i'm going to go back to joe's point is they're gonna have to wait for a couple of elle's couple losses. I mean it is there. Is these guys. it's very simple. They want to keep their jobs and right. Now as we all know that twenty percent of the fringe of the party votes in primaries and they'll get primer out just that's it and trump at this point is almost just a concept. He's not a person you know. Trump tweeted out over the weekend. Happy father's day to the losers. To the rhino loses the radical radical left losers. This is what they're leader. They're fearless leaders is tweeting out. This is the concept of what they're getting. There is no concept. There are no issues but in answer to a question during. I don't 'cause i was a little bit. Where meeker was what. Where's that transformational figure where somebody stand up just like it is moving to the jobs. Can't mauer it till there's another cycle to losing. And although they are set up to win in twenty two thousand two the republicans. I do believe as long as the democrats do not go anywhere near to fund the police there might be a break in history and it might be a change in the midterms because there is nowhere to go and all those suburban democrat although suburban republicans who moved to biden will stay there so i think the answer is there's gotta be another cycle of losing for the republicans. Were any semblance. Republican party heads again. You know it's really interesting. As far as brand goes it used to drive. Democrats crazy that ronald reagan was such a brilliant politician and that he had conservative policies but he was temperamentally moderate. He was cheerful. He was optimistic and he just why he won. Forty nine states it's why he always won landslides. They now have a later. Is donny set that that puts out nasty hateful statements and really whose personnel it's defined by hateful nece resentment bitterness anger And and the entire party has really adopted. Adopted that that pose. And i just i just want to remind everybody. Donald trump went one election. He lost by three million votes. He wouldn't have won that election. If james comey hat written a letter ten days before but he won one election. Republicans have been losing sense. Let me say that again. From my former republican colleagues republicans have been losing sense that election that donald trump would have never won himself. But for james comey's letter. They lost in two thousand and seventeen. They get destroyed in two thousand eighteen. They lost in two thousand nineteen they lost in two thousand twenty and yes republicans overperform the polls were wrong and the house..

"That would have asked him to give up his dna so it could be compared to a address that carol had kept into in her possession for decades. It was only at that point. That doj stepped in and said no really. The united states should be the defendant year so the second circuit has compelling reasons to let this case go forward right joyce fans thank you very much. And thanks for writing that piece now to this an investigation by the interior department's inspector general published yesterday finds that last june washington's lafayette square park was not forcibly cleared. So that former president trump could hold a full photo op outside the historic saint. John's church instead. The report finds that the clearing which took place during protests against racial injustice and police happened so a contractor could install fencing. The report did find that attorney. General william barr urged officials to speed up declaring the process of clearing people. Once trump had decided to walk through the area. Joe i don't even know what to say. I mean tractor putting up fence. Has this much power. First of all. I've got to say. I think i've been unduly a tough william bar i because i did not know all this time. That not only was. He'd operating as attorney general of the united states if america but he was also the director of scaffolding for lafayette park action. That having as like your your your your second job you know the headlines from some of our friends and the panting and heavy breathing. After this i g report came out as laughable. The i g himself said this report is not dispositive. Listen we we can only handle what's in our jurisdiction and as he said unfortunately not everything in our jurisdiction. What this report said was that they had planned to go out and fix the scaffolding for some time they didn't know donald trump was coming out until later in the afternoon and jonathan lemaire. Here's here's one of my favorite parts of the report. That undermines everything that people writing about this. The head of operations for the park police learned about mr trump's plan when mr bar came out to inspect the area quote. Ask bar scaffolding director of lafayette park. Are these people still going to be here. When otis comes out. Mr bar asked according to the report referring to the president of the united states the operations commander replied to mr bar. Are you freaking kidding me. He then hung his head and walked away. The report said which of course undermines every headline that you've seen here it also of course misses the bigger story that donald trump did go across with. You know i the chairman of the joint chiefs this secdef. There were a lot of things that obviously made january or june. The first deeply disturbing four beyond scaffolding plans earlier in the day. But again you talk about a lack of perspective in the padding and the over reporting here from trump apologists it's really it's laughable on. Its face you just need to read the report and read what the says and what the does not say. It's about reading the report. Also joe just simply putting this back into context. Let's remember that. There were peaceful demonstrations largely at lafayette square in the days. Prior to this now. Certainly there was active vandalism at church. the northern end of the square saint. John's the where there was a smart where there was a fire that obviously no one condones. That was the night of course at the president and his family were rushed to the emergency bunker at the white house. Something that he of course found sort of humiliating humbling and he wanted a strong message to push back. And that's how this plan was hatched. It was hopelessly senior. Aides of we all have had the reporting at the time came up with this idea for him to walk across the park and then his daughter suggestion of trump display bible in front of that damage church and protests tapes. I work that's yeah. That was a key. Part of this show under under overlooks by many And so therefore they wanted to clear the parks we could have that photo op now. The protests that day had been very peaceful unlike a few nights prior but yet they were still cleared out. Include out forcefully with the use of tear gas and there's a lot of back and forth whether tear gas was in fact used it was according to the report. The governor in recent days so certainly the attorney general was sent out there to inspect this and yes there was increased security fencing around the perimeter of the white house going up at that time because the protests and so on. That part is true but the timing here there's a reason why those protests were cleared exactly when they were and that was for the president and his senior. Aides wanted him to walk street. And have that infamous photo op. Well the reason. They were cleared with the urgency. They were cleared with three things again. My friends and young children can be true at the same time. They could have actually scheduled a repairs on scaffolding at the same time before knowing of course donald trump who was humiliated after after news broke that he scrambled down to the bunker humiliated by that but for some reason he was deeply humiliated by that but they made these plans and then donald trump and his aides made their plans said he was going to go across there and again schedule. Could've been in place for a couple of days like you can. Stop your panting. You can put down the paper bag. That really doesn't prove anything. Also it's very true. At the same time that you had the turkey geno the united states walking outside inspecting things and basically basically telling part police clear this up get these people out of here now and again unless he could be the director of scheduling lafayette park of us. I apologize william bar. I didn't know we can do two things at once. Try to undermine jeffersonian democracy undercut two hundred and twenty years of checks and balances and be responsible for scaffolding lafayette park. And if if that's i apologize but if not then again at the port where he comes out before trump comes out and he asks this question. Are these people still going to be here. When police comes out the operations commander replied to mr bar. Are you freaking kidding me. He then hung his head.

"All right. It's half past the hour live. Look at the white house as the sun comes up over washington. Welcome back joining us now. Member of the new york times editorial board gay and national security expert and columnist for usa. Today tom nichols. Let's get in. Some of our must read opinion pages this morning and we'll start with this one from the atlantic entitled biden's latest challenge could be in surmountable. Pete nichols writes in part. If biden remains fixated on winning republican votes that might leave him weakened that might be a problem say income twenty twenty two with fruitless. Negotiations stalling his agenda. That could cost his party. It's congressional majority and give biden the unmistakable whiff of a lame duck president faded to serve a single term as democrats. See it passing the boldest possible. Legislative package is a way to showcase what is at stake in the midterm elections. In which case it's pointless to spend months pursuing a more modest package that republicans are likely to reject anyway one of biden's instincts honed from decades serving in the senate is to cut a deal but the republican senators amenable to give and take are long gone now. The party is a creature of donald trump if biden is reluctant to absorb that reality if the negotiations bleed into the campaign season. He is at risk of losing everything. And joe i can't help but disagree but but agree actually with this concern. Although i know that biden's heart is all about trying to reach out to both sides and trying to be president to all people and you do that through bipartisan legislation. You're you certainly do right now. We're not even talking about what joe biden wishes for or what in hopes for we're talking about politics being. I think it was bismarck. Who said politics is the art of the possible and more forget about sixty votes with the republicans right now on most measures their problems with joe biden even getting to fifty votes inside of his own caucus. Oh when you. This was a great debate to have about a month or two ago. Right job. Finding just needs to pass. Something question is how do you do it. When you've got forty eight votes in your own democratic caucus and republicans. Who don't want help at all. I think it's an enormous enormous challenge. Probably joe biden's presidency. Once we get out of the rona virus pandemic. I hope that he has learned the lessons. That rock obama learned into the party. The republican party is even farther down down the unreasonable road. Obviously at this morning but the reality is that joe biden is going to have to go big if he's going to keep his majority and by the way keep people voters georgia engaged for example and willing to show up at the polls to give democrats majority that they need. So they're going to have to find an enron around this. I continue to believe that the way forward is not necessarily To deal make only with republican legislators but actually to go directly to the american people and make the case for local infrastructure programs and other other things that i think republican voters may be more interested in than their representatives at this point who are totally radicalized. That might be optimistic as well but we do have to find some deal making. And i think if not going to happen if there's no one sitting across the table from him i really think that waiting for republicans to come to the table and mistake. I couldn't agree with. Peter nicklaus more. That's a great point about going over the heads of politicians in washington dc. We've seen other politicians do that. In the past barack obama was great reaching out a variety of ways. Ronald reagan always famously. Did it when over the heads of of everybody in washington dc. You told him he could. Or couldn't do and communicated directly with the public that also. Tom nichols lines up with the legislation. That joe biden pass the covid legislation republicans in support it but seventy five percent of americans. Did it may be a political win. For joe biden to go out there and pushes infrastructure bill across america get sixty five seventy seventy five percent of americans supporting it and dare the republicans. Just say no. Yeah part of the problem for joe biden that we live in a post policy. World doesn't doesn't focus on policy where the democratic party still thinks. Well if we just explain this enough times or if we white paper or something That you know we can Somehow have a platform for cooperation when the real problem is that for most of the people in the country and especially for the republicans. This is just about inflicting wins and losses and so biden's instincts as you say honed in the senate to put out a package and then deal and on pieces of it isn't going to work this time around and i think one thing i think we have to give credit to the president for on. This is to say look. If he gets to the point where he does have to go to the american people or to go along with just pushing this through on a straight party line vote. He can at least say look. I did everything i could. I talked to the republicans. For as long as i could but i think we have to add one more thing here. Joe and that is you know that there's there's some unforced errors on the democratic side. I mean when you've got mansion and king basically being top cover for other democrats who staff are in the washington post on the time saying. Hey a lot of us didn't like you know. S one either That's a that's a bad thing to have happened so it may be time to just think about what are the things you can pass. And then if the republicans won't come with you even on the bare minimum of things. Like i don't know protecting democracy Then you know you do go ahead with that party line vote but i think that the idea of negotiating over this amount of money or that program We don't live in that kind of world anymore. Unfortunately i wish we did. But we don't joe. I was going back and reading on this last night. In may of two thousand nineteen a couple of weeks after joe biden got into the campaign. He was up in new hampshire on a campaign stop and he said republicans mark. My words are going to have an epiphany. He called an epiphany not a joke. They're going to have an epiphany where there's a new president they can push donald trump to the side and we're gonna get back together. Sit at the table. Just like i did in seventies and eighties and the nineties as a senator. I think talking to people. He's been genuinely surprised. That that kind of comedy just doesn't exist anymore that you can get in the oval office you can invite everybody in and they may sit there and listen to you but then they walk out the door and trash you in a tweet and try to raise money off but kevin mccarthy man. They weren't a lot of people. I kevin mccarthy allowed in in congress in the nineteen seventies certainly not in leadership. He wouldn't have got within one hundred miles of leadership. So that remains one of the most tacky classless things i've ever seen you. Go in for your bipartisan meeting. With the president. Then you come out and you you call him a socialist or whatever else and you try to raise..

Tom nichols Pete nichols fifty votes Peter nicklaus donald trump new hampshire joe biden tom nichols washington Joe enron congress washington dc one hundred miles seventy five percent republicans Today biden forty eight votes seventies

"They want you to be with them on s one or on getting rid of the filibuster on things where i represent the state of west virginia. They're that's who hired me. I represent the best. The best possible fashion. I can't and i'm not. i'm not going to get in a situation where i'm placate. Two different people want different things as my state. And it's the people know me here. I haven't changed. I'm not changing So for them to expect me to be something different than i'm not. It's not who i am. And i think that senators represent their states but we went around and around about this. I asked him what his messages to folks. Who are in georgia or florida or any other state where these restrictive voting rights measures are being passed while. He's trying to find. Bipartisan support. For something else and he told me they should just keep working on all right. Jared hey thank you so much. appreciate it down. let's just. Let's just reconfirm a couple things for people that may be watching this very frustrated who are very frustrated with senator mansion. Alexi said he was a governor as walter and nobody else you've seen somebody who's been a governor in a senator will tell you. Governors remained governors even when you call senators like and and they believe in making the legislative body work he also comes from the state voted for donald trump. sixty nine percent voted for donald trump. He's not a coward because you're a political coward like people are saying on twitter. Then after sandy hook he wouldn't have started pushing gun safety legislation in west virginia. That was a whealy courageous thing to do. And he got reelected even after taking on the nra. Let's see somebody with out courage. That but i was not going to pass and by the way i i hate to break that two people that are watching this. It is a it is not going to pass as you're to have to be some radical revisions and would have to come much ward. The metal and mansion also is not going to blow up the filibuster except maybe under some extraordinary circumstances so with this being the reality democrats can keep banging their heads against the wall and insulting. Joe manchin also is his mentor. Senator byrd from west virginia who talked about preserving institutions of the senate imagined taken that to heart as well and he is fond of saying that look. He knows that he frustrates sometimes liberal democrats. Like well if you don't like me. Would you think of the person who would replace me. It's not going to be a democrat in a state like west virginians such a republican state. He's like this is the only chance you have to have a democrat in this seat representing the state. But we're seeing here is as much as the white house has been trying to satisfy mansion and cinema in the moderate democrats with these repeated. Bipartisan outreach on infrastructure to show them like hey we're trying our best we're trying to get the republicans on board here trying to say like look if they will deal with us. Maybe we can convince you to come on board and do this by reconciliation. But that's not certain there's it's not a guarantee that at the end of the day. It seems like mentioned very very clear here that he doesn't want to do this. A party line vote. So that's why you're seeing someone like we're hearing yesterday. The new camera for the white house president biden moving away from some of the taxing from some of the tax plan instead suggesting a tax floor minimum fifteen percent for corporations. Many of them aren't paying anything that we could fund that way they're saying with additional. Irs enforcement they're trying to find some sort of middle ground to satisfy doing this part the infrastructure part with some republican votes. We want to turn now to the latest on the pandemic. Nbc news now puts the us death toll from covid nineteen at more than six hundred thousand. The country cross the half million mark back in april. The numbers have decreased significantly since more people have been vaccinated. But according to the cdc hundreds of deaths are still reported daily. The agency said last week. The numbers of cases and deaths had dropped to their lowest level in almost a year more than one hundred and thirty six million people in the us. Nearly thirty eight percent of the population have been fully vaccinated so far meanwhile the effects of the economic downturn during the pandemic have been devastating especially for women of color many of whom are struggling to keep their businesses alive. Alexi mcammond do you have a new piece on know your value dot com highlighting unprecedented initiative to boost investment in these businesses backed by former senior obama adviser. Valerie jarrett and actress. I e shook hurry and you spoke with both at them. As you mentioned you said yours working in a state to support a lack lemon and of course others and while we make progress in many areas the reality is that lagman face economic inequalities really at all stages of life from prenatal care to retirement. What's different view you in this moment from where. Ucla for us to be able to actually start to accept fuller. They where there's a will there's a way. And when you have major wall street firms we wanna bet on black women. And we think that it's a good investment and the fact that the vast majority of their investment our our investment dollars not grant dollars sends a message to this makes good business sense. I think the business community writ large has been doing some soul-searching as they should and many number stepping up to say let's help change the paradigm. You've been in vocal advocate. Really kind of vocal about have food can play a crucial role in our personal longest journeys and curious how that can reform so work. You're doing the one block with million bucks an initiative. Yes so for me. Food is food is the hob epicenter of everything. Women make up only seven percent of the restaurant industry when it comes to being executives or owners restaurants so the number of black women better. Doing that is far less. And so for me. It's so important to advocate for restaurants in general to let people know that there is space for them to to to be a part of of this industry so alexi up for some great conversations. But tell us more about this initiative and what are some of the facets of it that could be replicated either meyer government or by other companies who could follow suit. Yeah well as you saw. Women like should curry valerie. Jarrett former secretary of state condoleeza rice all on this advisory council for this initiative called one million black women that goldman sachs as launched it's ten billion dollar investment specifically in black women and black female business owners over the next decade. And so i you should. Curry is helping with restaurant. Industry folks valerie helping with other folks. They're really focusing on these expertise but really trying to figure solutions for one of the age old problems that i heard in the interviews. I did for this piece. Which is just a simple lack of access to capital and if you are a black woman in particular and you want to start a business of some sort that takes a learning curve. There are various entry. And then you think. Where am i going to get the money or the funding. I don't typically go to my friends or family like other folks do and they're really looking at ways to do that through grants to direct investments and otherwise over the next ten years. And when i talked to these women involved they sort of said. Look this is great. We're happy to be part of it but we need others to join in this effort. Access to capital has been an issue especially for black owned businesses. But i mean more at least half of them were decimated by the pandemic. So this is needed now. More than ever. And you can see a lexi's reporting and full interviews with asia curry and valerie jarrett your value dot com. Thank you very much. Know your values alexi mcammond for that coming up new reporting on. How the cova lab leak.

"Also said he wanted to pass a measure that would strip the legislation pay prevent them from being paid because of what they're doing here but this does feel like the under cards right for the main event which is going to be the federal legislation. John lewis voting rights act other measures. The congress is supposed to take up likely later this summer. And that is we know that is going to be an extraordinary important moment. And both sides aircrafts. Republicans are girding up for it mitch. Mcconnell mitch. mcconnell was in committee. Doing committee work a few weeks ago. On this str- speaking out against the idea of expanding voting rights which shows you how seriously he and other republicans are taking this and that's also partially why this president who is knows about from his time in the senate knows about the sequencing of legislation is trying to do everything else. I try to infrastructure. I ahead of whether because they know how the pitch battle will be over voting rights. There's a hop hope there can be. Maybe a bipartisan agreement. On this because there certainly won't be on the voting rights issue and that more than anything else is where the future of the filibuster is in debt. Well as john just mentioned. Texas democrats are calling democrats in washington to do more to protect voting rights. After defeating the voting bill. One texas lawmaker called on the president to push for a national strategy and another called on congress to do their part joining us. Now co founder punchbowl news and palmer. She is in msnbc contributor. And it's good to see this morning so it took this last straw stunt for democrats to walk out and deny republicans of corum to stop the bill for now at least in the state of texas. What is happening in the congress though on capitol hill in terms of voting rights. The future of these pieces of legislation. I think jonathan laid that out pretty well but basically we're all looking to july chuck schumer has said that is when he plans to bring each one of this kind of massive bill that would deal with the voting rights issues at the federal level. That we've seen crop up in many of these. Different states were conservative. Legislators are trying to peel back some of the voting rights at this point. There is no support in the republican party in the senate to try to forge some kind of agreement on this voting rights act. That schumer is going to try to force a vote on at the end of july. The question really is going to be i think. Is this going to be the issue. That he's up the end of the filibuster. Will you see senators like joe. Manchin support this or not as so far. It doesn't appear that there is that enthusiasm our appetite to try to take this up and say this is going to be the issue. The bill lester is going to blow up over but they are willing to take the vote and that is something that you're gonna see. Chuck schumer force. Yeah you know. I don't understand for the life of me. I just quick at a to'real the side note here. Hr one is is a train wreck waiting to happen. I have no idea. And i don't start with john lewis his age arm four people. I talked to on the hill today. Yeah that makes a lotta sense that seems to make lesson. Joe manchin joe joe mansion and christensen and a lot of other democrats. This is sort of the dirty secret. A lot of other democrats are just sitting back and letting mansion take a lot of lot of the flack for things that they don't especially love themselves and he doesn't mind it. I think in fact he probably likes it. But you know. I don't understand why they don't just move on. Hr for the john lewis voting rights. Bill it's going to be a lot more difficult for republicans to vote no on that. I'm sure they will but still it's a lot cleaner shot at voting rights and it's following through on the legacy of one of the great civil rights heroes of our time and it makes a difference immediately. The supreme court actually guided congress to do this several years ago. so why. don't they just walk through that door. Hr four so much cleaner than hr one seen senator joe mansions to say that he would support that along with lisa. Murkowski isn't going to be big bipartisan. For i think that is fundamentally where the republican party is. And if particularly when you look at where mitch mcconnell is. He is not going to let his members. Vote for this. This is not gonna be able to conscience like we do see some of these other issues. I think chuck schumer's clearly stuck his line in the fan at h one is where he's going to quit his backing and that's what's going to happen moving forward and that's going to be the issue he's gonna push in july. It's going to be the john. Lewis voting bill more at at. What point does joe mansion understand that the republicans are just not going to give him that. Bipartisan vote that That he's looking for he's not gonna find those ten republicans and if he keeps looking for those ten republicans he's going to at some point look like linus in the pumpkin patch waiting for the great pumpkin. Derise it's not. Yeah it's not coming. But in the meantime he still appears to be holding cards even if it's not just him Holding them so. This is a win win for him. In some ways. At some point he will have to deliver Something but i think actually the way forward for democrats is to. I continue to believe. Set any to fight for voting rights all fronts but one of those mechanisms is to take the case directly to the american people. I think this is something that joe biden needs to take on personally. I think he needs to try. And convince at folks in swing states that this is actually a pivotal issue for democracy. That is important to them. Not just two people in cities or people on the coasts or people who don't look like them. I think that that direct democratic. He'll might be might be the way forward. Because there's no political courage among republicans in washington and jonathan will mirror. Just wanna be clear. When i talk about democrats standing behind joe mansion liking letting him take the flak. We've talked about this before that right now. It's joe manchin. Who's who's saying hell no to the filibuster ending the filibuster and it is a win. It works for him. In west virginia state six nine percent of of west virginians voted for donald trump and twenty twenty But also it works for alive of senate democrats who have told you and me and other people. They're just not comfortable with ending. The filibuster of mansion wants to take the flak. That's fine but push came to shove very very uncomfortable ending. The filibuster to these are several democrats. That are sort of standing behind joe mansion while he takes a flak. That's right a first of all. I don't think mentioned minds the attention. He's sort of to be the star of the show here. But certainly i've had. I've had conversations democratic senators who also say that they're not quite willing to go. There even are issue on voting rights. They think that maybe they'd end up. If there isn't a filibuster reform it would be more of a talking filibuster. So i wanna get you your sense on that. Just how endangered is the filibuster really this summer and also provide us an update on the ongoing infrastructure. Talk so congress is out this week but the president had has retargeted memorial day deadline has come and gone. But he's targeted now. I believe the week of june seven so coming up as sort of his new deadline to see whether or not there could be any sort of bipartisan. Deal on infrastructure allergists. I think that you are totally right. You're both are. There are many senators that do not want the filibuster to end. They're just much more quiet about it. I think you have a lot of that. There are moderate democrats in states like arizona georgia accent. There would have problems voting for some of these issues that they don't want to have to take as far as infrastructure. We're reporting this morning. That joe biden is set to meet with shelley moore capito the republican from west virginia. Who's leading the senate. Republican side of things Tomorrow now i think it's important to note that they are very very far apart. Toxic continuing joe biden wants to find some way forward. But they don't even they don't even in the same page on what actually infrastructure means at this point and they're really really far apart when it comes to the actual monetary amount. So yes. They are looking towards next week in the vitamin Find some pathway forward. Is there going to be some momentum. I'm very skeptical. That they're able to get there. I think the real question is going to be when democrats turn to just say we're gonna go it alone and the fact that reconciliation and finding ways or just on by democrats alone is also going to be different at all. I think say like. Oh we're just gonna dump republicans it's time for democrats to get it together. That's going to be extremely difficult. Anna palmer punchbowl news. "President trump presidential also colder rainy like everything else but i will say it's furthering my point. The president on sunday addressed in front of the group of delaware veterans not just the sacrificed day and their families made for those loss service but he made it very deeply personal and spoke about his son. Beau who himself was a veteran who had died six years ago that day and certainly this president understands world day is all about in the sacrifice that american families have made. Well you know and blow told him both told us when he came on the sad whenever we talked zombies his his military service and the friends. that And colleagues at he knew and and loss in the war set that was felt like that was the most important thing he did in his life. So obviously very personal to the biden's just like it is for so many so many families more also. We were watching joe biden yesterday. It's so it's so interesting. That if i heard any president talking about democracy and we need to fight for five six years ago i would've said okay. That's great but we're we. We assume that's the reality in america for why is he talking about almost democracy defense. Why is he talking about democracy. And it just really. It's just another sharp reminder of where we are in twenty twenty one that there are illiberal so-called democracies across central and eastern europe there is a growing totalitarianism across the globe. And the growing number of americans who were saying that they want the election results overturned. They'll even resort to violence if you believe the polls to achieve those ends right. The president is talking about democracy because democracy is under threat at home and abroad It was even more meaningful when you think that we spent the past four years having a president who i think if we remember wasn't that long ago i don't wanna miss quote him but i think at some point he called. veterans losers. So you know. I think there are. There are millions of americans for yesterday was was a very solemn day and a reminder that democracy and freedom are really truly not free. It's not trite if you've lost someone in war or you know if you were out marching for civil rights in the sixties or for voting rights last year or this year. Look what's happening in this. This was an emotional day for my family as well. My uncle donovan died in two thousand thirteen of an agent orange related. You've gotten vietnam right. And so the families have sacrificed to build this democracy and to to hopefully expand it. I think a majority of americans who voted for for joe biden want to see this democracy indoor and expand to be better and to include all all of us and there are liberal. Joe that don't want that and so we're so sorry for your family but it's a reminder. There are so many families that that will remembering yesterday and not just for those who died in battle but for those who died from the effects of battle. And we've certainly seen it over the past decade the past twenty years the number of young americans committing suicide that served our country in uniform. And it's it's just again. It's something that bears Bears repeating every day about those remarkable sacrifices willie speaking of tried. And and i. I hate to bring this up. I really do but speaking of try you look at the tried attacks the vice president on on friday. You want to go after somebody because of policy that something but the us memorial day because she tweeted have a nice long memorial weekend or whatever it by the way yesterday memorial day. Let me just educate everybody out there. I know some of you are new. This some of you may be forgotten what it's like to be americans. I know the last four or five years have been sort of ood destabilizing for you. I didn't say that and destabilizing forty memorial day was yesterday. Memorial day weakens over the weekend and willie what was so remarkable about remarkably trite and small about the fake outrage. That that was aimed at kamala harris on friday for a tweet ways. You just i think george conway said oh you wanna go there. You really wanna go there you want to you. You wanna look. Donald trump's tweets on memorial day about his economy and how great everything's going etc etc like nothing to do with sacrifice guy who for four and a half years had absolutely no idea how to connect with those who have sacrificed for this country. Made what happened on friday All all sort of the more tried the more sad. That people were that desperate to attack on this weekend. Yeah and as you say. Donald trump who many of them probably support if they're attacking comal harris that way. Put out a message. Talking about gas prices for memorial day weekend and remember how great your president donald trump was and that the uptick in price is taking place because of joe biden it turned into an attack on the sitting president so enjoy the long weekend from kamala harris. Obviously there's some hypocrisy on there on a day yesterday especially joe. I mean there are so many families out there if you think about for example. The vietnam veterans wall. My dad fought in vietnam and experience with agent orange that affected his life and still affects it today. Mike they're fifty eight thousand three hundred eighteen names that wall alone and you stand in look at that wall. You can't help. But think of the loss potential the loss futures. I feel that. When i look at it i think about my dad and if obviously if he were on that wall. There's no me there's no. My kids aren't around so there's such a depth to a lot of families in this country. For what memorial day means you know we first of all the wall is overwhelming just by itself overwhelming to look at all the names and to be there and see people finger tracing the names of loved ones lost or friendships ended in vietnam And the agent orange effect on people still. Today that was mentioned by myra and uninsured. Affected your dad. I know several people who are deeply affected but yesterday the importance of president biden speech. I think was critical component to memorial dates. The idea of giving a speech about democracy sort of defining what democracy meant to him and to us has long been on his mind. Jonathan long been on his mind and he gave it yesterday on the perfect day to give especially given the confluence of events around us the texas legislature. The whole flap bowed voting. And i think if you speak to people. And i know you do in the white house. The idea that the republicans in the united states senate seat of ignoring the house to a certain extent but the republicans in the united states senate. Jonathan are such a monolithic bloc. Has surprised him yeah..
