Uncle Kip Shares a Story of When JJ Made Brian Gay a Bag of Nerves
"Let me tell a JJ story real fast. All right. Okay. A hundred years ago, I'm carrying for Brian gay. He's already got like three wins. He's got more money than the Pope. We're at TPC. We're on Tuesday. We're Wednesday, whatever it is. We're going to play a practice round. So me and Brian gay go over the first date, all by ourselves, you know, to play a practice with brown's kind of a quiet guy. Loved working for the guy like crazy. I still have one of my dearest friends in life. I spent ten years with him. He's awesome. But man Beijing are fixed to tee off and we're staying on the T white and the guy in the crowd start coming to the bleachers around one team. They used to have bleachers by one, you know? And so, right? Yes, it's sovereignty. They keep PC and the fast start feeling that. I go, oh, somebody cools come to the T and all of a sudden here comes piss at JJ. And who's the tall guy? Brendan Steele? Brian Steele. And then Bill megalon walks around the corner. Bill Mickelson walks up to the tea, fail, you know, Phil looks over. He goes, Brian stand everybody and these three nuts are coming and Phil looks at prior. He goes, Brian, you got a game, and he goes, now he goes, what do you got one now? And he goes, he goes, me and you gonna fly. And steel, he goes, we're gonna play a 500 a side, 505 hundred for the 18. It's $1500. And Brian Gary has more money than anybody is tighter than Dick's hack man. He squeaks when he walks. He is hard when. Guys, sorry, he had won 30 3.2 million this season before. So the guy's got more money. And Brian absolutely locked beat the up like crazy. Brian looked at me. He goes, I don't even have $50 in my pocket. And I go, dude, you got to play the game. And so we see you all for everybody takes off and Brian. And he's already has three PGA wins. And he is so nervous that can't even get a breath going down one tee. JJ, JJ's is walking down the first sea like he owns the world. He's been big business. And I go up to feel like a boy, you have locked my guy. He's nervous and shit. I said it. Plus, you don't have any money and Phil goes, well, he had $1500 in a few minutes for this. The other part of that that you don't even know is like, we only thought there was going to be three of us. So we had individual action with Phil two that was like a 1500 NASA. So. I'm like, no, it gets even better. Colleen had to go to like four separate ATMs just to play that day.

LIV Analyst Jerry Foltz on How He Got Involved With LIV
"How did it get started? How did you become the guy who announced in London? How did that conversation start? Long, long, long story, but essentially they first two people they hire to take care of the broadcast. From a technical standpoint, where the producer and the director, they hired the producer that JJ knows quite well. And you met him, John. His name's Keith hirschman. He was the guy who originally was the very first producer at golf channel. Basically invented all of the, all of the coverage that you saw in the first 15, 20 years at golf channel. And he was in charge of it all, and including hiring and developing the on air talent, if you will, or lack of talent and like this, but he was there. And we had talked a number of times and he always assumed that I would say no that's and he was right. I would have. Because there was so much anti noise out there. And you hear only one side. You tend to believe so much of the of what is being said. And then one day I was kind of sitting there just thinking about big picture thinking about the future moving forward, I turned 60 this year. You know, how much longer do I want to work and how much more do I want to keep going down the same path? Which I love doing the LPGA as you guys know. And I called up and said, one night, I go, I'm listening. And the very next day sitting in this very chair, I got on the horn and a similar call to this with James Watson and will steger, who are two of the brightest people literally that I've ever met in TV who are reinventing the will and the wheel in terms of the way golf was covered and we sat there. We talked about it. They answered all my questions and made me feel comfortable about something I knew nothing about. And including all of the questions that are continually raised throughout social media that I'm very comfortable where I stand on my moral ground. In that regard. And I said, okay,
Why JJ & JP Would Never Withdraw in a LIV Tournament
"Speaking withdrawals, Kevin na with drew last week in the live tour. I think that's the first WD we've seen on the live in 5 events. I'm not exactly allowed. Yeah, not exactly sure what happened. I think he had the flu or something. But if you told me that I could complete two more rounds and it doesn't matter if I shoot a hundred. I think you'd have to decapitate both of my legs for me to not play. If last place is 75 racks or whatever it is, 150, dude. Yeah, I mean, I would 50 her. I mean, dude, hundred and wider than I know that. A 150? Yeah. Yeah, man. I mean, I've been there like food poisoning on the road for foreign land, like where you can't even move, but like for sure, is your caddy allowed to literally carry you. Like, is that allowed? Yeah, kitty harms kitty harms could definitely carry Kevin around $8000, yeah. Yeah, 'cause he's a little guy. And you can technically have 18 caddies, so like, I would just get like, I pay, I pay each guy a grand. I pay each guy a grand per hole and I get the strongest guy in Saudi Arabia. You know there's some strong guys there. Like some freaking, whatever their secret police military, I'd be like, bro, thousand a hole. 18 caddies in like literally carry me to like wherever my ball is and then you have to carry my clothes too. It goes without saying because I've got carrying those. And just fucking drag me wherever. Like if you have to hold me by the arm and drag me across the sand a few times, like get me this 150 racks so I can finish this round.

JJ & JP Feel They Could Have Taken on This Years Weak President's Cup
"I think the president's cup, the problem with the president's cup. And I'm wearing glasses tonight, which means I'm smart as shit. But the president's cop, like it had to be electric the first couple days because once football hit Saturday and Sunday, they were deep shit, like as far as people wanting to watch. I think in Australia, Tiger was playing all these other guys, it was closer, the internationals were depleted with all their guys droning tour, the time frame was weird because Australia is like 11 days ahead of the United States, like they know what happens two weeks before we do. So that shit was dialed. But this thing was not quite not quite there, but they made a comeback. I think to get to four points or whatever, a lot of action. Kevin kisner was the real hero even said when he was done, he goes, I got .5 points. I got half a point. Obviously they didn't take me for my golf skills. They took me because I was the only one that knows how to party worth a shit in this whole entire group. And he's a 100% factual there. Do you think you and I could have got half a point with those with those guys or partners? I think both of you and I, for sure. For sure, especially I think we could have partnered and got awfully 1000%. And we like kiss. I think you and I, without a doubt, you could afford like everyone hates the alternate shot, but you would have been good for ball. You could have partnered with everybody. I could have hit a few foul balls and a 1000% somehow best ball to half a point with somebody. I just feel as if that could have happened.

JJ & JP Welcome 'Old-Timer' Scott Stallings
"We have Scott stallings this week. Scott stallings recently off his first ever championship appearance finished second to get there. The week prior to playing some of the best books like also in the best shape of his life, 37 years old was the second oldest player in the field in Atlanta, which is unbelievable. Yeah, there he is. He's the old guy. Scott solids. Yeah, it's pretty much thanks for having me. You were the second oldest guy that blows my mind. That blows my mind. Yeah, but thank God Adam Scott got that ball up and down and Delaware on Sunday. I mean, which was sick. I mean, we knew it was close, but I mean, he got up and down on the short bunker in the front of the left green like up and over a mountain and then they hit it in the grip and tapped it in where I was like, holy cow. And I had to put the tie to the lead and I was just like, that was amazing. So maybe he gets done and uploaded with him the second round. I'm really glad you're here and then he's like, why? I'm glad I'm here too. I was like, well, you're older than me. Yeah, that's amazing though. We talk about that all the time on the plot, the average age of the tour players now is like 26, 25, and you're 37 and you feel like you're just ancient. And we were talking early before we came on. Scott Scott's been helping the university of Tennessee a lot. He's got 18 year old kids that he's helping all that. You think about it, you're double more than double their age.
JJ & JP Talk Best Golf Investments With David Toms
"We've talked about investments like golf investments and we've talked about some business side of golf and all that on the FTP here. And I've brought up a couple of investments that I got in because of the guys I was playing in pro ams with. And I think I really do think the PGA Tour makes you a better businessman because you get to meet all these high powered CEOs and you have their phone numbers and email addresses you can call them and no one else can, they love golf, all of them love golf. So but one of the deals I got in was just a private equity deal and I was like, hey, you know, would you want to get into this deal? And I didn't do nothing about deals, just like 24 years old. This was ten year ten years. And so I threw a little money at it, and then they exited the deal. Last year, on a four X multiple. You know, and do you have any do you have anything like that? I'm sure you have a bunch of stuff like that that you could recall on over the last 30 years. But is there one that stands out where you had a relationship that you made at a pro am and it turned into something pretty lucrative for you? Well, yeah, I mean, a lot of the I can show you all the logos and my shirts and hats and everything else, but a lot of that comes from relationships of people that you meet along the way. And certainly, you know, I've always looked at it, hey, you know, they love God. But if you ask them about themselves and let them start talking about what they do, to me, that's a lot more interesting. Some of the people that we meet a lot of what they do and you're talking about, as far as investment stuff, I mean, I'm in one right now that I've met through a guy three or four years ago that just sent on outing in Mississippi and I started taking a look at what he did and started reading about it and, you know, I mean, I think I bought it at about 56. It's up at 86 right now and doing well.
JJ & JP Discuss Sam Bennett's US Amateur Win
"Same bit was the U.S. ambassador in the history of the world. Probably the cocky ist college player we've ever seen. I love that about them, though. I love that. That's why he's good, but what do you make of the week of golf that we got? No, Sam, first of all, let me just say we love Sam Ben and I remember when you were you did your loop at San Antonio I think you got a sponsor exemption and he was there and we obviously both MC hammer and he was deleting beers with his voice. So he's FTP guy. Here's my whole deal, dude. Like I know that it took a hot second for him on a few shots, but I've never been in a USM final. I want a couple matches one year and it was pretty nerve wracking. I couldn't imagine I couldn't imagine the pressure, right? So it's like, as a fan, I get why guys are upset or when everybody do, these kids are like 20, 21, 22. That's pretty cool shit.
JJ and James Nitties Reminisce About Playing Slow Golf With Tony Romo
"We get there, and I can't remember who was first to hit. I think mitts hit it first, and it was way right. And I hit it infinity right. And Romo hits it. At least as far left as we hit it right to start this thing. And so now we got guys like all over the place. Well, they call each of us to the two to the T, whatever. We do our bullshit, practice swing hit, whatever we do. Flare went out there. They call him, and he's still like, he's on the cart path when they call him to hit. Like, usually all three guys are standing on the T when you're like ready to roll, right? He's on the car path, and he's got, I don't know, it was probably the tightest, the tightest band, whatever it, whatever the tightest band was, the black level. I know there are different colors, but the one where you can barely move your legs apart and he's doing like these hard freaking squats slash kegels slash, I don't know what you call them, but he's going up and down the cart path in a line before he even starts. So no practice doing any rips it off. You know how those things are a pain in the ass to get off anyway, like imagine wearing a golf shoes, like rips it off, then he gets to the first tee and hits it 50 miles left. Well, it was one of those holes, ninny, did you ever think we were going to finish that hole? No, I was like, has there ever been a group that's been put on the clock before they've completed one hole? We was standing up on the grain for at least at least 15 minutes and golf club time. That's so long. And he still had what? He stood and he was and JJ's pacing around. He's like, damn, this is a Connie show already. Oh, my relax mates all right. We're just getting started. He's now waiting for the group to hit off the next hole, which is a par three up right where he is. So now he's taking a drop off the path which he got a rules official took like 15 minutes he hasn't hit yet. We're like, we could have hit putted out. And but we didn't know if he was going to send some meteor over our heads while we were in the middle of the grain. Anyway, so then he finally drives down the fairway after all of this. He's like, hey boys, I'm going to hit now and then drives back over to his ball again. And now we're waiting for him to hit up up and bloody hit it a hundred yards short of the green, then we tip up, we're like this is crazy. So then we chip up, he finally hits it on the green, and now we're all on the grade, probably whatever. I think that teton was 8 24. It's probably like 9 a.m. by now. And then we'll somehow I made my part in JJ made his for a good bogey on the tent and yeah, so that was he too part of it and that was fun.

"Good chemistry together. We had another question about the mavs from young beatable. Rhino he asked the recent hire jared dudley and the slowing down of the rumors with marketing and dragons and of course we just saw marketing get traded today. Are there any other potential moves. The mavericks can still make this offseason. Because we're talking about you know guys who can help generate offense for dallas and even though things have been quiet withdrawn which. I don't think that we should you know. Put that to bed here. Because they acquired moses brown who can't be combined in a trade with other players until october first. Anata tober i. That's where theoretically they combined. Dwight powell with moses brown and go get goren drudge so even though that's slow down at a slowdown because right now. They can't trade for drugs but they can trade for him on october first so for dallas. October i is a big date in terms of being able to go after somebody else. All right what's next asha okay. So we're gonna we're gonna do a nun basketball question now. How did this pairing come to be. Who had the bright idea of pairing you two together. What did you think of each other prior. Were you familiar with each other's work. Zack from philly. I don't think we knew each other. At all simmons idea. Yeah i think so. Ooh i forget. I tried to find the email. Our first show was october. Fourth two thousand sixteen. That was our first show. And i'm tate frazier produce that show. I'm not sure who contacted me saying. Hey up on the show with chris vernon This week when did you start at the ringer. I started in august. Two thousand sixteen august. Twenty sixteen okay. Yeah and i. And i was there right at the very beginning to and i think yeah. It was bill because i was i was going to be doing a couple of mba shows. That i was going to be doing This college football show when the ringers still cover college football and so when i had first started one of the days he said one of our new one of our new writers is going to be one of our new writers that we've at the rigor young guy. He's explaining you to me. And he's like I want him to be our zach and he knew i've been friends with zach for log long time and i was like i'm down with it. Whatever go on and so then we got paired together and that was that right. You know what i mean. It was like you just stick with it and we'll see how this works and obviously I don't know if we're the longest pair. We're close to the longest pretty close. Yeah i think. I think sometimes i mean you do like radio appearances and whatnot and podcast appearances. Sometimes there's moments during a recording that you're like this feels a little slow. But i'd say like that first show like that. That felt good. You know. I remember coming off. That felt good appearance. I'm happy with how that went And i i think that was a positive sign early on. So i don't know. Did they make us weekly right. After that first appearance or do. I think there might have been a little break. I don't now i was doing. I was doing to a week and so the way it worked at. The very beginning was I was on with you the first episode of the week and then the second episode. I just had to book it somehow..

Were tons of people doing this. I saw one video of the guy smashing his face. I was like yeah. I understand thank you. I've no interest in having a permanent back damage for the rest of my life breaking her arm doing it. So thank you. i'm gonna watch the videos from afar and chuckled to myself. Yeah no no craig challenges for us. We have reached the quiet time throughout the nba but that interestingly enough there has been a ton of new since we last spoke schedule came out on friday. We saw You know in terms of what. The big games are things that we look out for the best matchup. What's going to be christmas. What they're who's playing at the very end of the year Anything that particularly stood out to you from schedule announcement day i thought. Nba dot com. Had an interesting article that said the schedule commemorating the seventy fifth anniversary with some classic matchups like some anniversary games. That i thought was kind cool. But i you know i. I think this year will be very interesting. They had a week about like some of the nineteen forty six forty seven season three teams. That were active than i mean. I'm sure we'll see some cool stuff. Maybe we'll see class jerseys for weeks like that in december during that week that other stuff on anniversaries as well from you know decades ago i wonder if i haven't let's closely enough to see if there's anniversary games from recent years. Obviously you know like knicks and hawks. Playing on christmas day will get drama with stuff like that. But that's what stuck out to me. I just think it's cool. How have some of those anniversary games. And maybe there'll be some stuff around that on the days of those games. Unsurprisingly the lakers led the way with the total of forty two games on either abc tnt espn or nba tv. Following the lakers were the warriors. So the lakers at forty two games so over half of their games on national television The warriors were forty one brooklyn thirty seven and then those two finals appearance teams one. That won the championship. The milwaukee bucks thirty six now Which is their highest ever by wide margin and then the sons who were hardly ever on national television last year got thirty three of their games on national tv so we will see a ton of the sons on a big stage. Boston also thirty three despite their down season last season They still have a ton of national television games. Other ones The knicks have. I believe i read more national television games this upcoming year with twenty nine than they've had in the last decade combined or something or the last at least five years. Goodbye the clippers. Still on tv twenty seven times.

"To not be the guy that we have typically see but i think at his best that is The keeping a part of a lot of winning there with young teams and and it's not like he was just an innocent bystander. To their success he was a significant rotation player. To a team. That i think probably outperformed that a roster a few different times by making it to the eastern conference finals and they were right there you know and he was a guy getting big minutes on that team and so i always been smart fan. I am a marcus smart fan. How could you not be a huge you grit and grind. That's what marcus smart is right. Symbols qualities that you know self expands have long loved loved with both tony allen. You know who helped bring that to memphis the all time. Tommy points leader rest in peace time. He really might be the all time leader itami points. Lord knows. tommy tommy heinsohn man. I miss listen. South extremes with my dad watching tommy heights. It's the mike orman the smart. Oh my god he love marcus more. You know what i mean anyway. I think you'd probably get the best of marcus smart and it's not a it's not a crazy contract it's not. It's not a crazy contract and even if you are thinking we want to use him as a piece. I think you need to get the best of marcus you know. In order to make him. I think his stock right now is nearly as high as it could be. Because he's got a lot of fans around the league but he also did not have a good season and they didn't have a good season last year right. There was a lot of people that truly fell in love with marcus. Smart where they were making those eastern conference finals appearances and he was making game winning plays at the end of playoff games. Like that's the kind of thing that they did last year was just a. There's a disaster. It'll be interesting to see. How with. Dhaka how i ooh what the offense looks like. It looks like and how balanced responsibilities orcas you bring back al horford as well. Who's going to be getting some of those touches some facilitating opportunities around the elbows from the perimeter I i wonder like what is marcus. Smart swirl gonna look like. I would assume he's going to start over schroeder You also have josh. Richardson in the mix there. Now as well peyton pritchard. Who's hab an awesome awesome. Summer league grabbed that. It's just summer league But he had a great rookie season as well as late. first round. Pick so you get a lot of guards in that backcourt nevermind. Tatum and brown. That are going to get a lot of opportunities..

"Isn't that kind of what you wanna do is have some young players with upside on a team. That's old so you can have one of those guys maybe pop and become a really good player. Maybe even a great player and now you have some veterans support and case. Those guys aren't ready to contribute. I just look at the warriors roster. And i see a lot of wing defenders around team. That's fueled by steph clay and dream aunt and i think that's kind of a good formula for success. It's closer to what the warriors they'd pre k. d. than what they had with katie which was obviously a dynamic unbelievable team but did lack some depth than certain seasons. So i'm happy with what the warriors did. Considering the circumstances if beal were available that be a different story. If simmons were totally available for them right now be a different story. But those guys aren't so i like her. They'd given the circumstances i stud. It was disjointed and fails to build around steph curry properly in his prime. And i also think that the draft told us what we needed to know about. What's going on there. Which is jonathan coming up after. The draft was interviewed. And they asked him about. Talking with steve kerr and he said. I haven't talked to steve kerr. Of course everybody was like what he's like for my workout. And then i went out to eat with joe lake up. So kerr was in there at the beginning of like the pre-draft cross. He wanted david mitchell. I from what i understand. And then he went to. Japan is totally out of picture. Fly from what. I understand about their pre-draft process. It's also insanely weird for your owner to be the one going out to eat with your draft pick and then talking about how much. He loves the draft pick. It's just bizarre. Heard a lot of cooks in the golden state front office. A lotta cooks. There's a lot of talks with what they've got going on right now. 'cause i love it. I don't love it. And i say this as someone who loves steph steph. Probably my favorite non memphis grizzlies player of the last decade. The other things is. I mean utah clay. Clay hurt that right before last season. You gotta remember a k. D. who has come back. He's the greatest success story. We have had come back from an achilles. He was eighteen months. You know and so. I don't know when and and i don't think we do know when klay thompson is going to be available and klay thompson for that team I guess i guess we'll see yeah cursing and that's the one thing the video that i regret not discussing more. Though that we put up on thursday it was just getting into well. If clay isn't the same guy that changes everything. And i think we're we're we'll find that out pretty quickly. We're gonna find that out especially on the defensive end he can. He can shoot. Three's sitting down. He doesn't need to move the shoot. Three's not a concern. I'm not concerned at all about him on offense where i am concerned about. Defense claim was a terrific defender. Will he still be a great defender of the wing..

"I hope to see you all in person may to thank five all right so i said to will a couple days ago that you know i was listening to the podcast. Every time we sign off with a guest go away. We go into this big puff piece kind of like. Oh aren't they great and so down to earth and all this shit. I we mean it. We've oh i'm sorry. Well should we wait. We'll take a tight five while you. Jesus christ but but but but there goes. Jj and i can't think of anything but just the most puffy bureau brought this up. And now i guess it's just maybe it's our fault because we're we booked nice people and i don't have a nasty thing to say i don't wanna say no just great for me. You know i like. I said we see jj socially. But i never get fan freak out on them like a game you know. What are you trying to see him. Socially a war might tattoo. Lean hat too. I just noticed that facing. Do you even know what that is Sure i see in on On door chat watch listener. Shawn's wearing a wearing star wars hat. Tween real deep cut one. That just says that where the e walks live where luke skywalker asshole so outdoor chat but But so for me. Like i say something nasty about. Jj you can't can't. I revere him like like people do spielberg like you know. That's that's he's a great interview. A real hero of mine My god yeah. Jason your director. Do you ever want to do big stuff like that like. Jj force. I of course. Would i mean but and that's why i was asking like if i ever got one of those calls it. He got the the one day he's not doing mission impossible. The next day he gets a phone call to go direct amid like. What am i capable where you would you step in one of those franchises. Though in a second and they would. I would Let me ask you this because you. You're starting to release albums yourself as a director and a really director and assad dot after director true. And you're really really good director. And i'll give you a lotta shit about but you really good and you can tell the episodes and i don't mean this as an front to the other directors i can tell the episodes that you direct you. Pay attention to all the right things. I do like the way in a joke. The storyteller do tell grits i. We'll say this. So then you see gallant j. d. abrams who you guys are not dissimilar you both in l. a. You both have. He was red hair great hair. He's a he was a writer and a director and you were performer. But you guys both ended up. In this in similar lanes he is servicing to shawn's point of movies that other people came up with a lot of like he's doing a lot of star trek and star wars huge any. Does it really really really. Well imagine what it would be like. And he'd kind of touched on on doing this pilot where he gets to do. Tell his own story. I think it's incumbent upon him to bring back the tutsies it's on him to bring back those great movies that we talked about that the networks all that stuff. Yeah i would say rather than see you. Step into one of these franchises. That i don't why would just love to challenge myself with with with just the responsibility and and you know no matter what the movie was just the process of i going right to the edge of what i think i can handle. I i i get that part of it but there are. We do live in time. I think jade is right. We do it limited time. Where movies can really come back in a real way and we have a chance now to reset but i think that's what streaming and frankly netflix is allowing for. You can make these smaller movies. That aren't super sticky in loud conceptually and also. There's a place for them now. Well it's great will. Would you please make you and jj. I totally. But i have to say in this country once you introduce a convenience. It's hard to take it away. Convenience has been introduced. I think both can coexist and still be healthy. Coexist colleagues coexist. That's what your bumper sticker meant. Yeah how know that car that car that you had the members or did you buy

"Mention her book book book. I will say this change. What do you think about this. So jason's got this theory that once he's had a certain level of success it will afford him the ability to then be very generous with other people but still waiting by the way. It's true right. Which was the theory again. Always had to run. You can't wait to be. Oh no i said. I said when i was a i was sitting there with things. Were not going great for me whatsoever. And i was confused about whether i should posture when i go into auditions and i should act like i don't really want it. But inside i was desperate for it and i was watching him do an interview once and he was so frigging kind and warm and unassuming as he always has been and i remember watching that going god just so badly want to be that kind in that warm. Because that's how i feel inside. But i feel like if i go into these auditions and i'm that nice. They're going to think. I'm desperate. And so i thought if i ever had success where people wouldn't misunderstand that then i can be as kind as i want to and i don't know if i'm there yet but You know wills laughing his ass up. There was a real deep moment for me motherfucker. Let's look at the you can just see the blackness in his heart right there. The laughing i wanna. I wanna get to that. I want to ask you. Do you have any great broadway stories actually. Jj jj produced a great great great broadway show called called the play. That goes wrong play. That goes wrong and is a huge physical farce in its holiday. Reassess really great was at the first broadway show you produced. That was the first one. Yeah yeah the darren brown secret Show to which was did amazing. Yeah do you know him. I do. I've known for a long time. That guy's amazing so jj. I have a question about Stepping up from something. That would seem to me very sort of manageable for scale goes as a director and then making a leap into an apparatus as enormous as the things that you are now. rightly known for and to make it relatable for those that might not be in the industry. Can you talk a little bit about what it is. That makes you capable of taking on an enormous amount of responsibility and to sean sort of earlier question embracing that kind of responsibility of leadership And it just for listeners. Out there that might find themselves at a moment right now where they could either stepped forward into something that might be a little bit uncomfortable but they think they might be capable of it and what was that. What's that process for. You obviously All creative endeavors and collaborations are aletha. Faith you just. You just don't know what's going to happen really until you're you're in it and what i found is that there's actually very little difference between doing something as relatively small as felicity or alias. And doing something that is far bigger like you know star wars or star trek movie that of course there are million differences and and and yet the fundamentals are the same and i just feel like in a way..

"Jj for me you being on the podcast is not only just an honor that you're here truly that john creche army does it but coming. Jj yeah no. Yeah because it's coming august. It was an honor clicks. That is survival. You gotta go out on top. I wish you learned that years ago. So this is great for me. Because i in the podcast form. I get to ask you all the things i've ever wanted to ask you. But when we see each other socially i can't really be like what was it like working on star wars. Yeah right. No but but i get to ask dumdum questions like i've always wanted to know like two questions. What was your favorite movie as a kid and what was the first movie ever saw. And we're those inspirations to you. I think mary poppins or something was really the first thing. But the i remember seeing the hunchback of notre dom the charles lawton version and it just crushed me like it. Was this weird thing. I was like. I knew while i was watching. I was like you know seven or something. And i knew while watching this is crushing me for life..

"Jj please so. I told my friend. Matt reeves who i had known since we were kids About this idea of of a girl going up following a boy to college like doing something really ridiculous and making a crazy mistake but realizing it was something that that actually was good for her way so we start talking about that would be. I wrote this pilot. Matt said he would direct it. We showed it to imagine who had never made a television show at that time. And they they just brought on someone who would never produced tv before tony krantz from ca he. He was an agent there so none of us made tv before and suddenly you know they bought it. And it's amazing that imagine training for for this for tracy That is that's a company. Run by ron howard. And brian grazer in ron howard. Being demand who basically started television had not yet produced a television show continue. Yeah that was so excited to get to be working on a show with the guy who i used to watch rehearsing happy days and so we did this show and it was madness because none of us have done it so we didn't know what the hell we were doing and it was so quick success. So you do felicity with With my friend and and your friends who carry russell whom Door one of the best people. I just heard about your white but i always carry was the best fast and But now i understand that kerry is another one of the best value. She's just to me she's best. But so you do you do felicity. And to great acclaim. I remember when that show came out and it was. Obviously it was the first big thing for kerry and it was huge and it really put her on the map and also people were talking about you a lot and then to the point that when you did alias from jj now it became from j. J. abrams the guy who did felicity. My point is your trajectory. Even though you're unsure twenty five pretty soon you're able to sort of course correct and you start doing felicity and from that moment on did you have any sense that you going to become changing abrahams. Who not only rockets shepherded star trek but also store the is star trek and star. Wars is not sustainable. Jj what's going to is only weighs down absolutely right. You're gonna crash for sure. Got katie though. He's really hope. You save money..

I'm thinking when the fucked is. Jj amorous have time to play guitar when he scoring shrek. I guess and did you score. Shrek i was. I was in the middle of shrek inspired to get. I didn't know you wrote but i left. You also wrote the theme songs to like alias and lost true. I didn't know this about you. What what what what. What instrument did you start learning. How only did those the songs. Because i could cause. I was the one who said okay like no one would ever let me do that right but you can write like how did you learn music. Like was that a thing. I can't read music. I've always played and i've always remember. We had a piano. When i was a kid. And i would just you know bang on the piano. My dad walked by and say stop encouraging but i always think god. I wish there was a way that that was. You know a string section or something you know an orchestra and later on a lucky enough to live in an era where they actually started to make set-asides samplers and things where that could actually happen at. Where did you grow up where was born in new york and then raised in los angeles. Okay yeah that's very similar to me and your parents are in the best right. Yeah dad still is a tv movie producer. Which is a unbelievable. He's made what ton of tv movie. I didn't know this either. Wow and my mother was also. She was a lawyer and all sorts of things but she also was producer..

"No dead dead. This is hilarious. The three draft picks came into my studio. It was a sheep to beat damara carol and samyong those are the three guys at samyong and damara. Carol were absolute dogs as you know right when they were in college and they were like i mean they're they're pit bull guys right and you should have seen their faces. When i'm sitting there saying i did not want them to take you there. Like god damn and beat was like. Oh everybody's entitled their opinion. And i'm just happy to be here and i'm like oh no oh no you selling that. The beat quote reminds me of the thing jalen suggs said earlier today. Said you know the ones who pass me up and take another prospect. It's gonna come back to their detriment. You can look at my track record. What i love on where of been always one the highest level like he's saying teams are going to regret it already for passing on him and he actually brought up a pretty interesting point that you know a couple of people from team said to me over the recent months. He's like. I've never been a fulltime basketball player yet because he played football in high school. He's a student in college. He's like this is my first time to be a full time basketball player and work on my skills and i mean it's a fair point. It's a fair point. There's only so much time in a day that you can dedicate on the court now has all of it. He is a freakish athlete in the ncaa tournament when he blocked that shot at the rim and then went the other way and through the full court bounce pass. That's like i mean that's next level. Top one percent of athletes stuff and i would encourage anybody 'cause i am. I'm higher on songs. That most people and i know he's in the top five but like he just has not gotten great. Pr and all of this. And i do think he's gonna get passed up. I love him and.

"Up a luca to orlando. That's lucas guy kevin clark. It seemed like everybody was going to be getting seemed like all the articles originally were like a riccar allows gone. Jomo's is going to get that job but then you at io pied that maybe rick carlisle was going out there. you know. maybe he didn't feel necessarily stood by a completely with all of the stories that had come out About the baz. Because we had wondered aloud like one is the last time that you saw coach leaving and stumping for who should get the job and it wasn't he didn't stump for jamal moseley. He walked out the door. It said i think jason kidd should get ten job. It's like are still. It's still so odd. How he did that. It's still really odd. Well volvos he got a job at for all so he didn't not yet officially just donges emerges as they strong front runner according to loge see i thought they were gonna hire keniakin but now it sounds like going to the warriors as lead assistance. Yeah so it's an interesting spot for him to be. Because i mean like you know who knows if curl be there for three more years or ten more years. But if you're in that lead assistant spot i wonder if he could slide into that someday. Who knows maybe. I mean or is it like you know like a coaching car wash. Is that golden state. It used to be san antonio a golden state. Now we're now kenny. Kenny atkinson goes to golden state becomes more appealing for the next head. Coaching job next season. Maybe but i think if. I'm not mistaken luke's the only one right luke. Walton is the only one that's got more. Nobody's hired mike brown off that staff right. I mean i think my brown is just coach. Who was he coach nigeria. I was watching it this weekend in those olympic trials. I think i think my brown was coaching nigeria. Or one of those teams. But nobody's and he was what like. When would kerr had that back injury. He had he was. He was winning all the way through to. And i guess people just thought anybody can stand on the sidelines and win a bunch. Because luke wanna a bunch. Mike brown water. Bunch steve kerr. Obviously what a bunch. But i don't know. I'll tell you what though kenny atkinson is a good higher because before he was head coach of the nets what people love. The him was his player development. And for the warriors. Here you get some younger guys who are anita in need of development kenny. Atkinson might be able to help them along in that category. I thought he'd get the magic job. Yeah that sense yeah. I thought i thought. I thought it was just natural. We talked about kind of building the culture with a young team in brooklyn which he did in maybe it. Maybe moseley can do that too. He comes highly regarded. Luca loved him. Carlisle car by some of the players. Saying younger guys..

"Floor by a wide margin for sure. And i think that part. You know the fact chris. Paul was as dominant as he was and devon booker. I know we take out the ten free throws for a second. He's still only eight for twenty one from the field. One of eight from three. The sons are going to get a big devon booker game or two or three the rest of the way and i think you know devon booker in that first half. He had multiple possessions through the first quarter. Second quarter where he got by brook lopez. He got by. Chris middleton he got by whoever was in front of him except for jrue holiday and at some point. That's going to translate into more buckets. That aren't free throws. And i think for the bucks is a real challenge here. I mean the the drop pick and roll coverage didn't work the switching pick and roll coverage. Didn't work do you hedge the blitz. Do you get more a little bit more aggressive. Do you just switch it up more. Do you not switch the brook. Lopez switch one through four. I for i think the bucks do have some answers. Chris but the suns are really really really hard problem solve though but just because of the amount of ways they can. Beat you. And i think the point. You brought up earlier about the lack of bench. Enzo which means you gotta go to forbes you gotta go to teague. That hurts a lot like that really does. Even though it's only ten twelve thirteen minutes per game those guys are going to get picked on and if you have to go to them more than that because you're not playing brook lopez for twenty five thirty. I i don't know. I don't know what the answer is there for the bugs except riding on the five even longer than you do and it's crazy booker ended up because early in that game. I thought oh boy. This is going to be a booker. Thought he had double digits quick And so he must have and they holiday did match up with him a lot. You know tonight and so now you know on those. Do you say all right. We're willing to just a booker. Kills booker kills us. But we've got to drew's. Just gotta be on chris. End of story. You know i don't we don't have the tracking stats yet. But i look forward to looking up. What percentage of curse. Paul's points came against somebody not named your holiday. Yeah it's gotta be like ninety percent. I mean it's really high. Might not like it might be. I don't know what it is. It's a lot when there were some of them where he was like he was coming down the court and they had like say like content would pick him up and i mean he just dribbled straight into like a twenty footer. Like he's been in the league for a hundred years like you know you gotta crowd him like make him drive on you. What you can't do is just let him to dribble pull up right in your face face. This is ridiculous and so yeah but it is a pick your poison thing and they did a great job on booker but they got demolished by paul and so it feels like. There's a lot of those choices. That booed holes are that we're going to have to figure out in this. Let me tell you something about booker. You're gonna love this story. So and i'm going to be a little bit i i'm not. I'm not ashamed of this. But i i was shocked to learn so when i was a kid as you know old but when i was a kid we had moved to saint louis so i i lived in st louis growing up and we didn't have an nba team. Everybody loved michael jordan and whatever and college was only big only heard get talked about a lot when it was missouri and then doing really well or was saint louis university and then doing really well. It's like a big city. It's probably like not unlike where you grew up right because you grew up at boston. That's not a college sports town. It's a pro sports the only time. I can remember really seeing a lot of boston. College basketball jared dudley days when they face his great duke teams. Jj redick back on jayjay. So even though i lived there my favorite team was memphis state and penny because my father had gone to memphis and so my dad's still kept up with memphis basketball but anyway like any kid when something becomes like really popular all the kids get into it. You start route for so if the team started going to the tournament. So saint louis had this guy named erwin claggett. And so when you're playing out back with all your friends you know people would pull their socks. He wore socks up. So you'd act like erwin claggett. Whatever but missouri dare star and. This is early nineties k. Like maybe like ninety one ninety two nine hundred. Whatever i was i was in. I was still juvenile. Their big star that we used to act like in the backyard was a guy who ended up becoming big eight player of the year. Which is now the big twelve. Melvin booker. i didn't find out until two days ago. Oh no vin. Booker is devon. Booker's death i we i saw i i keep up with these saint louis writers so i could keep up with the cardinals and i can keep up with the with the blues and i saw a standing columnist and saint louis benjamin hochman. He tweeted out. This article about melvin booker. And i'm like why are they. Talk about melvin booker. now. And i'm like no. It was like that as paul metairie dropping. The coffee glass moment. And i'm like melvin booker is devon booker's. I never ever put it together now. Never booker wouldn't be famous to a lot of people because very short amount of time in the nba. Went really was an overseas basketball player. But i will tell you for a kid that grew up. It's a louis those missouri teams when he's the conference of the year. No i acted. Like i was melvin. Booker my driveway. 'cause melva booker was unbelievable as a college basketball does it. Look like devon booker imitating. Melvin book around the court i style. It's all happened so fast. How about this. So i'm telling this story today at two my buddy. He looks up. Melvin booker on like youtube or something right. Just like he finds him play in a pro-am couple weeks ago. Demolishing people there like this guy is still getting buckets. Melva booker so as the story goes so of course deep dove into it so devon booker's bomb and and melvin never got married. Her name is Gutierrez so i guess he could be theoretically devon gutierrez but he. His father was playing overseas and his father was going to sign another contract. This is not unlike the mirant deal but he decided he moved back and so he was a big high school player mississippi. He went back to his town to his old high school. They were living in michigan. And he convinces mom to bring devon down to mississippi. And he's going to help you. Know put come advance in basketball by and he plays at his dad's high school by senior years average. Thirty points a game as you know. He goes to kentucky. The rest is all history. But it's really a crazy story. And i'm here to tell you that melvin booker was frigging awesome and i had no no idea. Did that was devas-. Maybe i would have been way bigger fan all these years. If i had not his dad was. But i was afraid.

"A record of blankety blank. And seventeen and thirty six in the play offs. And i mean it's just it's humiliating as it gets right. It would be like if they broke us up and they were like. Yeah and we're parting. Wave spotify sense of that. They're like we're spending ways with curse kevin because they only had two hundred and fifty listeners. Ep like god like why don't even have to include that like we. Just let me go to humiliate me to tell. Everybody remind everybody you know what i mean. So here's this guy who is let go one. Thank you to those two hundred. Two hundred fifty. We love you all ed. So he gets his opportunity as you know. They weren't responding to lloyd peers. They had some injuries and whatever and he takes over he doesn't unbelievable job with atlanta. Meanwhile indiana hired. Their grass is greener coach. Only to fire him. We played a year. And it's just kinda crazy. I mean if you go back year you know what what. People think about nate mcmillan. They thought he's three and sixteen in the playoffs. They don't even when they get swept they don't even win. Games off survey as in me was frustrated that everybody in our case. Sometimes like where's the three pointers for turner about stuff like that. But you know what he's done with. Atlanta is remarkable. And the fact they are even here the fact that macmillan even helped get them here to eastern conference. Finals really blows my mind. But i'll tell you what with hawks bucks here. I wonder if this is where their locker runs out. Because from a matchup standpoint they loved using that lineup against philli with gallo capella in collins on their front court. I'm not sure you're going to be able to do that against the bucks team like you're going to have a hard time stopping. Chris middleton. That's where my concern is here. How do you contain. Khris middleton with kevin herder you know with with a limping bogdan bogdonovich. 'cause not having the andrea hunter or even cam radish for that matter. Those guys would have been a big benefit to have against middleton. I don't know if they have the bodies four this series but you can't rule them out though because of the fact they're here considering the fact that continue to find answers and battle back from adversity winning tough games on the road..

"But that's the thing like when embiid is off the floor you have to find a way to maximize value out of ben simmons. You have to find a way because what we're finding out here. Drill bead was an mvp candidate for a reason. He is one of the game's best players for a reason but he is not tim. Duncan he's not dirk not this guy who's durable and always there. You can't always rely joel to give you peak. Joel embiid performance. So would that said. Chris he needs somebody by his side. Who can do that with ben simmons. Some of his own limitations has own stubbornness unwillingness to switch hands. Despite having a former shooting. Coach tried to have them despite having his former teammate. Jj redick suggests that he should do it. Despite the fact that every sixers fan in the world knows he shoots the wrong hand. Part of it stubbornness part of it is also role situation. He hasn't had a guard. Who can draw defenders away from the paint to your point in that clip. We're talking about and also. He has a head coach that runs a lot of pick and roll ground in run much of it. In doc rivers isn't doing a lot of it with them. My point is here. Is you gotta find a way to give value out of hand. So try something a little bit more frequently. Here's the problem when it gets to this point though if he can't shoot and he can't make free throws now i'm just fallon. You go ahead touchdown. The ball is rolling out lame but dr. I'm gonna foul you every time now. How you scoring. He wouldn't take four field goals last night. It's not always about putting it in a position. Pro johnson four shots. Chris when you set a screen role to the rim. You don't always receive the ball. That's not the screening. Enrolling is sometimes about just the gravity causing defenders into the paint to open up a shooter away from the ball and they've got one shooter kevin they they have guys who can hit shop like tobias. Harris hit sean. He's saying she he would hit shots off the dribble. They have to do it more. And i think it's a shame that we haven't seen it all these years. They do need. They need some more. It's actually a shame. Should more shooters that they got. A danny green hurts just in terms of what you were talking about. The gravity talk about dream on. Green is a hall of famer chris because of what he brings on offense because he's paired with steph curry their their their skills complement each other perfectly. Draymond green is zero as shooter. An absolute zero though. That's what i'm saying. Charges point earlier was been simmons with the bench unit. Instead of dwight howard had him play the five us this dynamic center who can run your offense for route being offensive. How around the elbows. Who can set screens and role to the rim. How they're not doing that. I don't get it baffles. My mind i have been waiting for for years and i've just about given up on ever seeing it well and there is a huge story and i hate this for hawks. Fan 'cause the huge story is the seventy sixers collapse but the collapse always has two sides and the heart. Did the frigging hawks. Show when you when you're down twenty six and you just. They always say one possession time. Keep chipping away. Keep chipping away and nate. Mcmillan has got those guys believe in and play in it out even when they've gotten in these big deficits they play it out right because twenty-six that can easily just start at thirty six. That forty six. Then you look up at the end you've just gotten stomped and guys just go is what our night i mean. They made everything embiid came out. You know going crazy made his first the ten of eleven shots so it's just not our night but we'll get him back when we go back to atlanta and not necessarily packet in but you know the circumstances die your and you might play that way or you get crazy and everybody starts trying to do with themselves and trying to hit the ten point shots and then it really gets worse for you. This team just keeps doing what they do. They got guys. Have this crazy confidence. You know this was bogdonovich. Trae williams moment. It was not just train. Donald starting lineup lou williams off the bench. They have a bunch of guys who have no conscience unafraid to take big john. Williams is been playoff disaster. Lou williams so many times over the years in the other night. No he's outrageously great and they just keep on plugging away plugging away plugging away next thing. You know they ended up winning that game. And now you've got a team in philly you know maybe it's going to be back against the wall. Okay now really. we're gonna play it out. Leo you play like a game seven because it's got to be a game seven two you only play seven or eight guys. You're not running out even full bench units you know that thing that rotation gets tight and guys just have to play. Huge minutes thing is can they. Can they hold up for a huge minute. Because he even said last night he put him back in with ten minutes left not wanting to he did not want to put the starting unit back in with ten minutes left but he was forced to like. That's a. That's a doc. Said i had to you know and then of course people asked him about the ben simmons. Four for fourteen from the free throw line. He was like like they asked him like did. Did you feel like you had to pull them because of the freezer situation and he was like. I mean your doc. That's that's what being a nice guy generally is like even becomes very difficult like broke. What do you think yes. I had to take him out. Because he's four four t for the free throw line and we dribble the ball past half. They run to start slapping his arms so that he asked to go take more free throws if he can hit them. I'll fight him. But like this can't be do hack a ban and us just be you know an innocent bystander toward demise and that was kind of the situation so you've got a huge collapse out of him at the free throw line and then you've got a huge collapse out of emptied. I really felt like there was a lot more slander about simmons and the four fourteen for the free throw line and only taken for field goals and all that crap then there was about embiid and i think it was wash. Shouldn't there be some beads hurt because originally when he won in the last seconds through a partially torn meniscus understands even playing is a testament to his attitude and his tough. I understand beat is one of the toughest players in the league. But he's three for twenty one in the second part i understand. That's that's why this is going the way it is going in the second half. It's all ben simmons and that sense if you're putting if you're pointing blame one of the two stars like it's one hundred one hundred one hundred fingers should be pointing at ben. Simmons embiid has hurt that he can. I can't fault him at all. It's unfortunate that their durability is a problem for him it's unfortunate. The injuries have been part of his story. But that's the way it is some guys. Don't stay healthy. Ben simmons you know it's partially system is fit. It's partially his own choices. And it's just the fact that the right now. I don't even think it's just the hand in this thing. I think so much of it is happening between the years. He looks spooked the line. He looks scared. He looked so terrified. He's up there at the line i like. He oftentimes like you can almost read it with ben simmons. Now it'd be like body language. Dr look like bill simmons. Sometimes but you you. Sometimes he has fire in his eyes. You can see killer and ben simmons. When he's at a free throw line he looks like a toddler. It's sad to watch sometimes like in that other game and for him. I hope like he is going to commit. And do everything possible. This offseason to prevent.

"You don't necessarily need that but you gotta have somebody who can step into that role and do it. At a high level andrew holiday has never been that guy. He's always been at his best when he's sharing the back court with another guy who takes on those responsibilities primarily so he can do what he does best focusing defense and also being a spot up shooter cutting to the rim in attacking secondary guys off the dribble and in this situation. He doesn't necessarily get those chances quite as much. There's almost too much on his plate but that's to your point. I mean sure would have been nice to see a higher level to his game but if anything. He's just looked worse with interest. I've never really thought about this but you know how you know who else. Who has you get the best out of them under those circumstances is the guy he's not playing because he got hurt is the guy across from inquiry. Yeah right the. Maybe you're miscast is being the guy that's got to run everything you know. And it's not like he does run everything i don't know but i'm saying like you're the guy daddy he runs enough. You bring the ball your the majority of the time bright and you want more from him and he said look. He said seventeen thirteen nine fourteen. Nineteen those are the numbers in these games every so he had twenty point game in the series yet. This is the biggest one tonight which was nineteen the end up four sixteen. He's gone to the free throw line five times in the series five better by against the against the team with no rim protection. Better bryn mawr. Game six batum saying like i think. This guy's a gamer. I think he's a player. And it's like i mean. Look if argued anybody. Thirty seven to forty five minutes. They're giving me fourteen point. You play anybody in the league replacement level stuff if i'm playing to forty minutes journal..
