JFK JR.: PLOT THICKENS - EP7

"Caroline oftentimes pleaded with him to live his life differently the whole us. He was at the time with Princess. Diana maybe the The biggest one of the biggest celebrities in the world and of course along with that comes to danger from stalkers from obsessed fans but in JFK juniors case he cost of his family history. The son of the president the connection to fame of the wealth of the Kennedy's the multimillion dollar estate that the family had JFK. Junior was in fact. A REAL TARGET OF POTENTIAL KIDNAP PLOTS. There was always the fear and caroline was extremely worried that JFK would be riding his bicycle. And we'll be plucked off the bike and thrown into the back of the van. Welcome to episode seven of fatal voyage the death of JFK Junior. I'm your host Exum Aside Cup column McLaren with investigating the intriguing life of the man. They called America's Crown Prince and wondering whether there was more than we sudden tragic death at least more than previously on. Well this man. Jfk At Union. He was so popular that if he ran for anything. It'd be lights off or anybody else. If he got into power then he could use in his power to hold responsible. Those people get killed his uncle and kill his father as part of our investigation of come to New York and teamed up with investigative journalist James Robinson of American media together with many to excess hundreds of pages of long buried. Fbi files on junior and in the law. Step aside we uncovered what looks very much like a plot to kidnap John. Junior back in Noni ninety five or not. I ninety six the status out. This is a big red flag for us. A PLOT TO KIDNAP JOAN IF KENNEDY JUNIOR for years before the crash. This is serious not threat to kidnap a child. This is a grown man. We're going to keep digging into the detail to see just how credible kidnap plot. This really was and how big a threat to depose to juniors life but of course I want to know exactly who was behind it but trying to pick out the relevant clues from the massively redacted if bi falls is no easy task. Yes so this is what I'm looking at here is is the documents when we're about two months into investigation back in one thousand nine hundred and would this jumping out here gangs. It's the same case number as the original tip from New York City where they had. Jfk Junior under surveillance. But now we've got the inclusion of a gang. We've got gang one and then a couple of pages behind that gang number two and third gag is referenced but what I'm trying to make sense of here is is this criminal enterprise connected somehow to the kidnapping. Why are they connected? And where are they? Based so I've got to try and figure out if if these gangs are the ones which were in the previous documents the we we were and what I'm trying to do is really look at that with exit a kidnapping otherwise we just going down a rabbit hole but unusually for if I y documents we've got here said of the detectives handwritten notes off. Let's say this. This is unusual James. If you look at this you've got. He's writing it all down page after page. And he's getting obviously getting information from the informer and he's GonNa get down to kidnap J. F. K. Jinya a victim another one kidnap Florida and this on and on. It is semi references to Florida and New York. Jfk to be kidnapped and this is getting towards Indanan nineties at this stage. We're not quite sure what is meant by the word gangs. The Mafia perhaps drug cartels or does it simply referred a street gangs in the mid nineteen nineties. New York City was a vastly different place. To how it is today and gang violence was a very real problem. His Barry Levine. With some insight. He edited the National Enquirer and in New York City at that time New York in those days was completely different from how it is. Now you walk into Times Square now and it's like Disneyworld kids families from all over the world come and it's a relatively relatively safe place but in the years before the plane crash. New York was going through one of the worst crime periods. Its entire history. Exact in nineteen ninety. The city's homicide rate peaked at two thousand two hundred and forty five killings. The city lived in fear at the time. New York was. This was a time before rudy. Giuliani came in in the mid nineties and began cleaning things up as the mayor of New York. New York was a rough and tumble dangerous town. The movies if you recall the warriors escape from New York all played off the Cesspool of violence endanger was depicted in these films. People were afraid to go on the subways. People were being mugged outside of their apartments. They were junkies. Heroin crack gangs not that the threat of violence or gang trouble seemed above the Jones. Junior John for the most part lived a pretty carefree life in Manhattan. New York was place. He loved the place in fact that he felt extremely safe. Jfk Love to walk through Central Park. He loved to ride his bicycle all over the city he was completely carefree and in fact a caroline said his wife was so fearful of him getting attacked getting kidnapped and where they lived. At the time. Damning tribe Tribeca neighborhood of New York was completely different than it is now. It was much quieter. Cobblestone streets down there were a lot grittier used to be hookers. Who WOULD LINE UP DOWN THERE? Literally a block from where they live at night. There were muggings. Of course it wasn't a lot of street traffic and sacked. There were a few cars. There was only one restaurant down the street then. Jfk junior hung out at a place called. Bobby's so there was a true fear of something tragic happening John but in the years in the decade before the plane crash there were a lot of drugs coming into New York from the Colombian cartels. We asked reportedly on Wagner who spent decades covering the Kennedy family if he had ever heard of a plot to kidnap John Junior what he told us effectively ruled out the idea of New York street gang behind the plot the FBI at one point uncovered a plot to kidnap him and millions in ransom and it was deadly serious and they made arrests they were going to grab him on the street nearest house and kidnapping and plans to demand millions and Ranson or they cut off his ear and mail it to Jackie. I mean it was an elaborate plot and at the time they took it extremely seriously. I mean it was not a hoax. It wasn't an idle threat. It was the real thing and these people were hardcore on this terrorists. Who were going to do it. If they've there was no question they were going to do it but it never influence John's behavior. It doesn't take long to figure out that it's a lot easier to get into debt than to get out of it. That's simply safe is a. m. p. l. safe dot com slash JFK As James now discovered Leon Wagner sources. Seem to be corroborated but the official documents and the evidence in Saudi. Fbi files pointed towards a very different amore deadly gang altogether the heavy hitters a South American drug cartel what stands out to me. Is that like you say this. Handwritten so this is coming directly from the informer and if the token about Florida for instance we know. The Miami is a is a hotbed for drug trafficking. If we know that it's New York of its California is San Francisco. These are all coastal. Pass the country. Which are there that always favored by the the cartel from traffickers? Because of the access to get that from South America by boat this is probably the defining document for me for this weekend's work. We've got two planes this one plane which is all about this florida-based drug cartel and had inform on them. So there's an informer who wants to give up on them to the FBI and a separate plane is about the kidnapping JFK junior so. There's two plans. He's offered to get out of jail free so we've got to work through that but we've got to work at. Who are these players? But just got the generic mylan female ferry unusual to have a female at the top end of a drug cartel. So this whistle blower is offering to rats out a drug cartel peration ambroise amount of Columbia and also inform the FBI of kidnapping plot but they appear to be connected. Well at least this connected by the math of the of the one INFORMA- here it is here The talking about Homs. There's not about it. Totally violence so he's JFK. GonNa come to home or is it hard for the cartels in South America. I think if there's a an INFORMA- we've got now a pattern emerging which is which is what we look for every single time we go through these documents is we know they're gangs and I mean we should talk to some some investigators some cops down in Miami. They'll know what's going on. They'll have some leads. They'll know who the the kingpins were. Who a whistle blower may have been. Because look if you're a Miami Dade cop whether or not you can arrest half of these people you know exactly what they're doing two different investigations dovetailed into the one if be our report first of all and insider wanting to inform on a Colombian drug cartel and secondly there was information about thwarting a planned kidnap of hell. Were they connected? We need to find someone who can help us. Decipher the F. B. I. Files and read between the heavily redacted lines. We've really got to perhaps take another step further and just show our hand. There's a mention there a detective Andrea from Miami. And He seems to have the main informant on this particular job. He seems to be the mine investigator on this job. We've got a really against safe. He's still alive izzy retired. Let's see if we can find him and hopefully or maybe he's got some squad might so And see if we can perhaps get them to help us a little bit. Absolutely I think is well where you have someone who works narcotics or in the Miami Police. If you're a coffee Miami around this time you're going to know every nitty gritty bit of detail. And while he may not have wanted to spill secrets back then when these people were alive. It's it's very different now. That dead if he's with us he'll certainly have a story to tell. Annex Moves Nelson Andrew. The detective whose name we found hidden amongst the reductions in the files is currently chief of police with the West Miami PD and before that he spent twenty one years as a homicide cop in the same city. He great to talk to me and tells me that he recalls the kidnapping plot. Well yes. There was some surveillance being done. They were trying to figure out what was the best way to be able to get their hands on on. Jfk Junior and he was known to exercise on a bicycle throughout Manhattan and That was the the essence of their plan to grab him when he was on one of his bicycle. fortunately never never materialized. Never took place but Yeah they were definitely looking into that. I mean they were looking for somebody. Prominent somebody that had Political poll somebody that Was well connected. In in America and John F. Kennedy Junior would be that person and again because of his freedom throughout New York six weeks. They also felt that he would be a relatively easy target for them to get their hands on what alerted the FBI to the plot. Mathur's place a guiding. The trove of files holds that clue and points directly to the perpetrators of the attempted kidnapping coming from inside of one of the biggest Colombian drug cartels. I think just coming back from the vote and that it's coming together nicely. Interestingly the seems to be some really interesting message drug operation. That happened around that same time in Miami Ran Florida. Yeah that's right around this time. Operation Cracker Jack's which was the FBI task force which essentially brought down South Florida. Miami's biggest drug operation. It was hundreds of thousands of dollars a week of crack cocaine cocaine heroin and all other sorts of trafficking coming through that could hear the story about an eight billion dollars a year kind of action from South America to Florida. That's massive this matches the the FBI falls weeping reading the tied to this this whistle. Blow this whoever this man is. He's connected to this cartel. If New York was a dangerous place back then Miami a city controlled by drug barons and awash with dirty. Money was on a whole other level of lawlessness altogether. Remember this was Miami. Vice reporter and utility explains Miami was the center of the cocaine universe in the nineteen thousand nine hundred. Seventy percent of all cocaine entering the United States came through South Florida and most of it was driven by the Colombian cartels run by people like Pablo. Escobar made Miami a boomtown but it also made it like a wild west the stories about people using cocaine actual currency paying for hackers or dental grams of coke. According to the Drugs Enforcement Agency the dope trade brought in about twelve billion dollars a year to the area that's more than tourism or even real estate figures actually astonishing such was the pound influence of the cartels. These vast sums of drug money were often lauded in plain sight with authorities. Apparently powerless to do anything about it on. Remember it well. It was a time when virtually every one hundred dollars. Bill had traces of cocaine on it. We're talking about insane. Amounts of cash in the eighty s the Federal Reserve Brunch. That covered Miami and Miami beach at a five billion dollar currency surplus bus more than the other eleven Federal Reserve banks combined and most of it was in fifty and one hundred dollar bills. The stories of people pay for million dollar properties cash literally loading suitcases twenties fifties and hundreds wall of it came with violence. The murder count rockets at the big players completely ruthless in eliminating anyone they source award There are very few things I enjoy. It was against this background that the FBI launched Operation Cracker. Jack's in on ninety four in a series of rides on major drug dealers. Money Launderers in the Miami area. The fades successfully smashed a distribution network. That had a turnover exceeding one hundred thousand dollars a week and they arrested in charge. Sixty-six criminals with a series of federal documents. It was in the mid nineties that the authorities finally began to get a handle on the sheer scale of the problem. The FBI took out a lot of local distributors with various operations including one cracker. Jack's and the big plays in Columbia targeted to most notably Pablo Escobar and. He was killed in a shootout with Colombian police in nineteen ninety-three as a homicide detective working in Miami. At that time Nelson Andrew was on the Front Line of Clinton's war against drugs and he comes through for us with some crucial information the redacted name of the informer prepare to tell all about the John Junior kidnapping plot. The information that came to us came from Brazil does last lover in California crosby or possibly I believe was his last name surname. We dispatched Andy. Tila to see what he could dig up on. This crosby will cosby dude. And what the connection between him and the South American cartel might be he reports back. Okay so the man we're after here is either Cold Charles. Crosby or Charles cosby depend on who you talk to him. But essentially it's the same guy who have you say discerning? Who's kind of mid-level Street drug dealer in Oakland in Fresno California in the nineteen eighties nothing spectacular but apparently he controlled a few crack houses and had a steady streaming from his activities making around forty thousand dollars a year. By the time he was twenty by all accounts he was also pretty charming a good looking kids and most of all very ambitious the documents show the original tip to the. Fbi came from California. So that makes sense. But what would this hustling street dealer from the West Coast has to do with a multi-million dollar Colombian cartel operating through Miami on the East Coast? Now this is where it gets really interesting. Charles apparently became obsessed with the woman who was arrested in Miami in nineteen eighty five. She was the head of a very powerful cartel and she was known as the Godmother of cocaine and I believe she's the one who came with the plot to kidnap JFK. Junior Andy's information chimes again with an all tip Berry Levin Hood but never published in the national enquirer. He tells us what he learned. This plot was from an obsessed Colombian Queen Pin would plan to snatch JFK junior off the streets in New York. The woman who was involved in this was Known in the Latin underworld as law Abu Stora. A term used for a type of man heating female who uses men to satisfy her sexual needs this fifty. Something woman who is head of one of Colombia's notorious all-female crime rates and a drug cartel was reported to have had six husbands all of whom apparently vanished without a trace within a year of her Mary. Each of them. Many of the drug deals that This woman was involved in were hatched from an island in the Caribbean Sea. They'll per plan apparently was to snatch John from a New York City Street. As he rode his bicycle he was gonna be heavily drugged and smuggled out of the US on Banana Bo. Interestingly her plan came with dire warning to our latkes that we're going to carry this out and that was don't harm a single hair on John's beautiful hat or it will be your funeral. Parallelly this plot to kidnap. Jfk junior this bizarre plot to kidnap. Jeff Kitchen Your. I should say sell through at the last minute because of protests from this woman's advisor and they were extremely concerned that the kidnap of JFK junior would bring a massive military response from Colombian armed forces and and basically exposing their a drug cartel money laundering schemes and other illegal activities of cocaine distribution and so forth and hurried visors warned her debt by kidnapping JFK. Jay was high profile men in the world that it would absolutely destroy their drug cartel so the plan apparently was called off Whether the FBI informed John of this plot is something. We'll never know because from what we know now. We do not know if he was told about this plot In the years when he was living. And if he had had he ever been sacked told his wife Carol set. But what's the connection? Between the Colombian Drug Queen and Air Californian whistleblower blower his both Andy Tillett Nelson Andrew. So this woman. The Colombian Queen Pin if he like her. Name's Zelda blanket. Charles cosby eventually trickle down. He finds out where she's being held in prison. JFK

Based On a True Story

JFK

"Yeah. Today's episode of based on a true story. We're going to compare history with the nineteen ninety one film JFK written and directed by Oliver Stone JFK was nominated for eight Oscars and came home with two of them won for best cinematography and another for best, film editing. There are very few events in American history that have the same amount of conspiracies surrounding them as the assassination of president John F Kennedy on November twenty second nineteen sixty three and one of those conspiracies is exactly what the movie covers so by extension. That's what we'll be doing. Is we compare history with the movie JFK? I'm Dan the fab and this is based on a true story. Before starting our story today. There's two things we need to do first. Let's set up our game to truth and ally. If you're near the show, here's how it works. I'm about to say three things two of them are true. Which means one of them is ally. Are you ready? Okay. Here. They are number one Lee Harvey Oswald was killed just days after the assassination of JFK. Number two. Jim garrison received top secret information from a man only known as X. Number three today. Clay Shaw is the only person put on trial for the assassination of JFK. Ghannam? Okay. Now as you're listening to our story today will find the two facts scattered somewhere throughout the episode and then by a simple process of elimination. You'll find out which one is alive the one we don't mention, and of course, we'll do a recap at the end of the episode to see how well you did the last thing to do before getting into the meat of our story today is find out what will be covering over on the producers feed next week. And that would be wonder woman a few months back. We learned about the true story of the author of the superhero in professor Marston and the wonder woman, but this time we'll take a look at some of the historical elements that we saw in the two thousand seventeen superhero movie. So you'll get that on the producers feet next week. If you aren't on the producers feed, you can get access to that by supporting the show over at based on a true story podcast dot com slash support. Once again, that's based on a true story podcast dot com. Slash support. All right now, let's begin our dive into the true story behind the movie JFK. Okay. So I know I just said we were going to begin our dive into the true story. But I also think this is worth saying up front. As I mentioned in the introduction. The assassination of president John F Kennedy has a ton of conspiracy theories circling around it, and while we will be looking at one of those threads in episode. It's also worth pointing out that to be completely honest. There's absolutely nothing. I can say in this episode that will make everyone happy every episode of this podcast covers different topic. Each of those topics are things that people dedicate their entire lives to whether it's researching those topics spending years studying them or even living through those true events in history. And perhaps that is never true than the story today. Some people are convinced one version of the story is true while others are convinced. A completely different version of that story is true. And for the most part those different versions all make some really great points. But the truth is that there are always going to be some things we can't say is one hundred percent truth with. Absolute certainty that will get everyone to believe it people spend years and years on this subject, and I know I've said this before, but I feel it bears repeating again, there's no way I can get to the level of detail in a single podcast episode that will answer every single question surrounding the story of JFK's death. I just wanted to clarify that up front before I start getting emails about how I didn't cover their favourite theory about JFK's assassination. Although with that said, I would love to hear your favorite theory. So please send them on. I just hope he realized that our purpose. Here today is not to cover topics that people have spent decades unraveling and piecing together in a single episode. We are here to compare the movie to history, and even then there's plenty in the theory laid forth in the film that could be an entire series of podcasts by itself. Okay. With all of that said are moving today begins by setting things of with a range of historical footage from figures. Like, President Eisenhower Senator John F Kennedy just before his election and Martin Luther King junior to others like Fidel Castro behind this footage. We hear an uncrowded Martin sheen as the narrator explaining that. The now president Kennedy has inherited a secret war against Castro's dictatorship in Cuba. That war is run by the CIA and Cuban exiles and culminates with the bay of pigs invasion in April of nineteen sixty one which was a massive failure. The narrator continue saying that after the failed opperations, president Kenney took public responsibility for it. But privately claimed the CIA lied to him about it. Then to make matters worse. The voice over explains. The tension grew even higher when president Kennedy announced there were Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just ninety miles away from the United States. For today's movie, though, the narrator continues to explain there were more wars in Laos and Vietnam going onto then it cuts to historical footage of speech that Kennedy gave where he's talking about. How we as Americans mustn't enforce peace upon the world through weapons of war. But rather that we must reexamine our own attitudes toward the Soviet Union with our most basic common link we all inhabit the same planet. All of that tension between the US and Cuba really happened. I won't really go into too much depth here. Really because we already covered this on episode one hundred fifteen of based on a true story when we learned about the movie chain, and it is true that Kennedy gave that speech. The movie is referring to the American University in Washington DC on June tenth nineteen sixty three the movie actually cuts together different parts of the speech to make. It seem like he said things back to back. But even so I think it does a pretty decent job of gathering, the essence of the speech. It's too long to include here. But I'll make sure to have a linked to it in the show notes. For this episode, basically, president Kennedy speech alluded to the second World War. He talked about how a new war wouldn't be the same as World War Two. It'd be a new kind of war. A kind of war filled with nuclear powers that would stretch to the corners of the globe. It'd be the kind of war that would be pointless as an attempt to bring about peace. So instead, his speech suggested reevaluating the idea of peace. I believe that it is attainable. Second believe that the path to peace does not come through nuclear wars. But through an understanding that we're all just people inhabiting the same planet. After this back in the movie the historical footage blends from the days leading up to endure in Kennedy's presidency to the day of the assassination. We see clips edited into a sequence that blends into a mixture of real historical footage and fictional shots. Made for the film that really are made to look like they're historical. As the music. It's more intense. We can see one of the clips the sequences cutting to his o'clock. It's twelve twenty eight. The president's motorcade is driving down the road to crowds on both sides twelve twenty nine more shots of the motorcade, twelve thirty. The motorcade continues turning down the street, just then the screen goes black. We hear one shot then another and another. The movie is showing the correct timing. Here. It was on Friday November twenty second nineteen sixty three at twelve thirty pm when three shots rang out over Daley plaza in Dallas, Texas, even though not all the footage that we see in the movies historical, the footage that we see of JFK getting shot is not to get too far ahead of our story because the movie mentions it later, but some of that footage comes from the zapruder film. That's the name for the footage that close manufacturer Abraham zapruder was filming as president Kennedy drove by he was just capturing the event of the president's motorcade passing by for personal use little did he know the frames that he would capture would turn into one of the most famous pieces of footage in American history as they depict the gruesome assassination of JFK, the movie doesn't show at all. And for good reason. I've. Gotta linked to the footage over at based on a true story podcast com-, if you wanna see the whole thing, but I will warn you. It's tough to watch. Going back to the movies time-line after president Kennedy is shot the story cuts to Jim garrison. He's played by Kevin Costner. And is the district attorney in New Orleans, Louisiana. That's about four hundred and fifty miles or just over seven hundred kilometers away. From where president Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas, and despite the distance Jim garrison stumbles upon a possible connection to the shooting in his hometown of New Orleans. That connection is Joe Pesci. She's character David Ferrie when Jim sits down to chat with David. It's clear that there's something a bit off with his story. He's changing details from what his colleagues apparently said forgetting other details in seems to be a bit on edge as he's chain smoking in Jim's office. Jim continues his investigation, but then something unexpected happens Lee Harvey Oswald is murdered the man who was in custody for the assassination of the president was shot and killed by a Dallas nightclub owner named Jack ruby while being transported by the police. Oswald is played by Gary Oldman in the film while Jack ruby is played by Brian Doyle Murray. For the most part that is all true by that. I mean, of course, specifics of scenes and conversations are dramatized. But no one expects movie to be a hundred percent accurate. So as much as you can expect a movie to be true. It is here. Jim garrison really was the district attorney New Orleans at the time, David Ferrie was a real person to and was someone that Jim garrison started looking into soon after the JFK assassination. Probably the most inaccurate part of this whole scene with Jim garrison talking to David Ferrie was how guilty the movie made him look from the onset through him fidgeting telling lies in the nervous chain-smoking. In truth when David found out that Jim was looking for him. He voluntarily came into Jim garrison's office with his attorney. Although on the other side of that if you recall in the movie, one of the most suspicious pieces to David varies stories his claim that he drove from New Orleans to Houston just to go ice skating with some friends and that bit is true. According to the Warren commission report, that's the official report from the US government on the assassination of president Kennedy. David Ferrie told the FBI that he and two of his friends drove the three hundred fifty miles or some five hundred sixty kilometers to Winterland skating rink in Houston, Texas on the night of the assassination. His reason for the trip was that he was thinking about opening a skating rink of his own New Orleans. And he just wanted to see how they were run. Not sure really why he felt the need to drive all the way to Houston to do that. But that was his story. So you can see why you would seem a bit odd as for the movies mention of Dallas nightclub owner, Jack ruby. Killingly Harvey Oswald while he was in police custody. I'm sure you already know that's true. In fact, if you're familiar with JFK assassination at all you've probably already seen the Pulitzer prize winning photograph by Bob Jackson who happened to snap a photo at the exact moment. Jack, ruby pulled the trigger killing Oswald that happened on November twenty fourth nineteen sixty three just two days after Kennedy was assassinated. So also worth pointing out that the movie is correct. And showing that at the time Oswald was not officially charged which case death. He was in custody for the murder of a police officer while he was trying to evade capture after JFK's assassination. But that didn't mean that people already didn't suspect him. In fact, there's some reports that the reason why Jack ruby killed Oswald was not only in retaliation of JFK's death. But also to save Jackie Kennedy from having to return to Dallas to go through the inevitable. Trial. Of course, as the movie implies, there are others who believe Jack was involved in the conspiracy theory and killed Oswal. That's one way of tying up loose end. Back in the movie, we see some text onscreen to let us know that three years have passed with oswald's death. Everyone presumes that the assassination is well solved. But then there's a scene where we see Kevin Costner's version of Jim garrison up until the wee hours of the morning pouring over the Warren commission report as he does he starts to disbelieve what he's reading. There's no way. This could be true in the next scene. Jim and the two guys working for him. Lou Ivan Bill Burr sard there together heading to a building at five thirty one Lafayette street in New Orleans where in nineteen sixty three an ex FBI agent by the name of guy banister had an office. He had since retired but worked during his retirement as a private investigator out of the building. Then heading around the corner of the building to the other side of it, Jim points out that this same Bill. Ding on the other side has a different street address. This side is five forty four camp street. Jim continues to explain to the other two men that five forty four camp street is the address Lee Harvey Oswald had stamped on pro Castro. Leaflets he handed out three years before JFK's assassination that is. Well, I can't really say if that's true or untrue. The reason for that is because this is a great example of some conflicting stories, and what you believe to be the truth really depends on what version of the story you believe. So let's just focus on the facts that we do know. It is true that Jim garrison pushed this theory of banister being connected through the camp street and Lafayette street addresses. He wrote about it in his book that the movie is partially based on. And it is true that those two streets connect with a building on the corner. You can look it up on Google maps when they're investigating into all's walled background the FBI found out that he might have rented an office on camp street. They got this because just like the movie shows Oswald stamped his leaflets with the address of five forty four camp street. But you see that's not the only address he used. He also stamps some with his home address or a post office box. So. So the F B I thought perhaps he had rented an office that was supported by a letter they had of Oswald where he wrote to the head of the fair play for Cuba committee that while he was trying to start a Cuba committee in New Orleans. He had rented an office quote as planned and quote. But then the letter went on to say the office was closed three days later. It's also worth pointing out that even though Jim garrison was correct in pointing out that five thirty one life a yet and five forty four camp street lead to the same building. He was incorrect on one assessment that they go to the same office inside the building. According to a statement, given by Sam Newman the guy who owned that building the five forty four camp street entrance stamped on oswald's leaflets opened up to a stairway. That led to the second floor on the other hand banisters office at five thirty one lava yet was ground level. There's no way to get from one to the other without going on the street and around the corner, which shirt you could do, but that's not the narrative either the movie or Jim. Garrison was trying to tell it's probably worth pointing out that guy banister was anticommunist and was pretty far right wing. Politically, not really the kind of person you'd expect Oswald and his pro Castro views to hang out with recall Fidel Castro's revolution was all about bringing communism to Cuba. At least that's how he publicly positioned it in the beginning. Again, we cover that more in the chair episode. On top of all of that. There's another odd thing to consider before deciding which version of the store you believe. You see another man who used to have an office at five forty four camp street was someone the movie never mentioned Carlos bring your Carlos headed up. The Cuban revolutionary council out of that address for a few years before Oswald handed out leaflets with the address on them while Oswald was pro Castro. The Cuban revolutionary council was vehemently anti-castro. So some people think that perhaps Oswald put that address on his leaflets as a bit of a jab at the anti-castro committee who used to be at five forty four camp street. I say used to be because they didn't have an office there by the time Oswald was handing out his leaflets. Oh, and when he was deposed for the Warren commission Carlos mentioned, something very interesting about the leaflets. In the movie, we can clearly see us wads name alongside the address affi- forty four camp street, but according to Carlos his testimony, he said, none of the leaflets. He saw that Oswald handed out had oswald's name on them. At least not the ones that had five forty four camp street. They had that address. But instead had a completely different name on them. AJ hit out a few days later, what was handing out more pamphlets in the street. This time they had his own name on them. But they had an address of four nine oh, seven magazine street. So in the end the FBI determined that even though Oswald might have had an office on camp straight. He probably didn't have it for long. And if so it was rather unimportant. If he did. Let's head back into the movies time line now because the next major plot point happens when Jim garrison has a chat with a lawyer named dean Andrews junior. In the movie dean has a rather eccentric, look as he's portrayed by John candy. According to the film dean says he got a phone call from a man named clay Bertrand. Clay asked dean to be the legal representation for Lee Harvey Oswald in the assassination of the president. And that's true. Well, at least it's true that the real dean Andrews told both the FBI in the Warren commission. That's what happened. According to dean the same day that president Kennedy was assassinated on November twenty second nineteen sixty three. He got a phone call from someone named clay Bertrand and just like the movie shows Klay requested that dean represent who was then the suspected gunman in the Kennedy shooting Lee Harvey Oswald. However, what the movie doesn't show is that there's a very good possibility. Dini injures made all of that up people around ding described him as someone that was known to stretch the truth at times, if he thought it was amusing to do so and because of this revelation of the mysterious phone, call from clay, Bert. Trend dean was investigated by many people that included Jim garrison. But as I mentioned just moments ago, it also included the F B I in the Warren commission, it soon became apparent that dean's testimonies to different people weren't quite the same things. Just didn't line up in nineteen sixty seven because of these conflicting statements some of them made before the Orleans parish. Grand jury dean was convicted of perjury. He appealed the sentence of eighteen months in prison before long the case was dropped. But of course, you don't see any of that in the movie. Speaking of which going back to the film after finding out that someone was wanting to hire a lawyer for Oswal, Kevin Costner's version of Jim garrison decides to dig deeper things spiral even further as he finds out that clay Bertrand is a name used by a man named clay Shaw. He's played by Tommy Lee Jones in the movie clay Shaw is a well off businessman in New Orleans. So his was a name Jim garrison new through another thread Jim finds out about a relationship between clay, Sean, Kevin bacon version of Willie O'Keefe. According to Willie who is imprisoned for prostitution when Jim goes to talk to him. He was hired by clay for his professional services while he was hanging around Klay, though, Willie mentions to Jim that he saw Lee Harvey Oswald there to from here. Jim's investigation towards torn finding out what clay Shaw is up to. Now, clay Shaw was a real person. And it is true that Jim garrison made the leap from clay Bertrand to Klay shop Willie O'Keefe on the other hand is a fictional character. In the way that the movie shows Jim garrison finding out about clay Bertrand is incorrect, the truth is much more simple, actually. And that is Jim garrison. Find out about clay Bertrand from the Warren commission, and he knew about the popular businessman clay Shaw. So before long a hunch turned into a belief that the two were one in the same, man. I've mentioned the warrant commission briefly throughout this episode. But soon after president Kennedy was assassinated, obviously, the government launch an investigation into it officially it was launched by president Lyndon B Johnson. And it was named the presence commission on the assassination of president Kennedy, unofficially. It was called the Warren commission because the man leading the investigation was chief Justice Earl Warren, he wasn't the only one. Of course, there were thirty four official. Listed, staff members, legal counsels and assistance assigned to the project, and who knows how many unlisted FBI agents police officers and other law enforcement during the investigation for the Warren commission. It was those investigators who found out about a call from a man claiming to be clay Bertrand to the lawyer dean Andrews junior he did like the movie shows ask dean to be the lawyer for Oswald at least that's according to what dean told the investigators. We've already talked about how accurate those statements probably were. So the Warren commission report is where you turn to find the official story behind the assassination of JFK. Of course, we all know, the official story by the US government isn't always the same as the true story. But I'll leave it up to you to decide what to believe is the truth. Back in the movie, the next major plot points only adds fuel to the conspiracy. Ellen MC L dusk. Character. A woman named gene hill tells the investigators that there were shots that came from grassy knoll across the way from where alls Walt was located. She claims that she heard between four to six shots. But that secret service agents threatened her into saying that she only heard three shots, and they came from the book depository. Well, certainly odd. What would they do that? So soon after the assassination. We also see some other footage footage at the movie makes look like it's real historical footage, except we know it's not because for one it's a very young Vincent audio in it, but the point of us for June. The film is to give more witness testimony. They swear they heard shots coming from the grassy Nolan while everyone else was still trying to figure out what they just witnessed happened right in front of them. There was a man running by the knoll. As is the case for most of these plot points, there's the official line. And then there's some theories posed by others who have investigated the case in a more unofficial manner, regardless of what you believe both officially and unofficially. The movie is correct. And showing that there were people who claim to have heard shots from the grassy knoll. They also claim to have seen a man running. So meeting got as detailed as saying the man who was running was a policeman, and he was running away from the president's motorcade. There's even a photo someone snapped of the policemen running some thirty seconds or so after Kennedy was shocked. So that must mean he was chasing a gunman by the no, right. Whilst would he'd be running away from the president's motorcade or maybe as others have theorized, perhaps a policeman was the man that people saw running another version of the story suggests that the policeman was running towards a fellow officer more of what just happened. Officially though, even though there were reports of shots coming from the grassy knoll. The explanation was simply that people heard shots and didn't identify where they were coming from correctly to understand that you'll have to understand how the buildings are laid out in Dealey plaza where Kennedy was shot elm street is the name of the road where Kennedy was shot as you go down elm street, you'll find tall buildings roughly six or seven stories each on either side of the road. Then it opens up to a small little city park named Dealey plaza on one end of the park. There's the grassy knoll which just a grassy patch of land. You've ever visited it. It's really not that big. And if you happen to visit the area today, you'll see a white x an street. That's where it happened. The official story goes that when Oswald pulled the trigger he was shooting out a sixth floor window, the sound from those shots bounced around the other buildings in echoed over the open area by the little. Eighty park making it sound like they were more than three shots fired from that direction. So yes, it is true that people claim to have heard more than three shots. And yes, it is true that some people thought the shots sounded like they came from the area of the grassy knoll, but they were most likely hearing echoing shots of gunshots in a busy street and had a hard time identifying exactly where it came from. At least. That's the official story. Going back to the movie things take a dive into the conspiracy world when Kevin Costner's version of Jim garrison is contacted by a secret government agent. He had dentist himself only as x and is portrayed in the film by Donald Sutherland, according to X, Jim garrison is on the right path. He explains that president Kennedy is hated by the CIA the FBI and even the mob and by Jim being on the right path. He saying that the assassination was orchestrated by members in those government agencies and Oswald was just a passing. It is true. That Oswald said he was quote, just a Patsy, and quote, he refused to confess an instead claimed he was just a Patsy mere hours before he was killed by Jack ruby the movie make sure to show that and that is something that a lot of people referred to to suggest that he was the fall guy for a much larger conspiracy. As ex explains the reason for the US government wanting to take out their own president is because they were furious about the failed bay of pigs invasion in Cuba. They also didn't like how he was weakening to borrow from what we heard President Eisenhower say in the beginning of the movie, quote, the military industrial complex and quote. Perhaps most importantly to this was an idea X explains that president Kennedy was planning on withdrawing from Vietnam during his second term, something these secret government agents didn't agree with. So they did something about it yet. Again. This is a story that the movie tells somewhat accurately to the conspiracy theorist version, but a much big question is whether that version of the story itself is true or not let's start with a character of ex he is fictional drector. All of our stone admitted this but was quick to add that he based x on air force Colonel l Fletcher Prouty, what's interesting about this is that the movie is correct. And showing that Prouty believed there was a bigger conspiracy at play he believed not only that the CIA was behind it for mostly the reasons we just talked about. But that even the Federal Reserve was involved too. Prouty was pretty outspoken about his beliefs. So you can find quite a bit by doing a search for him. A brief overview, though, not only has him connecting JFK to the CIA. Like, we see in the movie, but also the the US air force had custody of two extraterrestrial bodies. And of course, that flying saucers were real he also believed that the Jonestown mass suicide was not a mass suicide at all, but a mass murder by US intelligence agencies. He also believed that president Franklin Delano Roosevelt was poisoned by Winston Churchill. And while this wasn't until decades later, he also pushed the idea that the same secret government team that took out J K also took Princess Grace of Monaco and Princess, Diana in the movie all this ties together for Jim garrison as X explains the conspiracy and related to believe clay Shaw was the mastermind behind the assassination. On behalf of the CIA. There's one catch to that though. Jim garrison never met Colonel Prouty until many years after clay Shaw was put on trial the truth is that Jim garrison never had a secret informant. All that was added for the movie the true story behind. Why Jim garrison was led to believe clay Shaw was the mastermind four the CIA in the plot to assassinate JFK is very complex which could be why the movie tries to simplify things a little bit. But I'll try to recap the highlights. Here. It starts during World War Two when clay Shaw served on the US army medical corps after the war clay became a successful businessman, but he still maintained connections in the government in nineteen forty seven. The CIA was formed with the intention of gathering information on other countries clay traveled to many countries for his business, but one of particular interest was Czechoslovakia that country was of interest to the US. Within the span of one week in February of nineteen forty eight. It's government changed from a democratic state to communist dictatorship in nineteen forty eight clay volunteered. Some information that he'd gathered while traveling abroad to the CIA its surface that as a connection between clay Shaw, and the CIA that connection seems a little less important when we back up and realized that the CIA had hundreds of thousands of civilians doing the exact same thing that clay Shaw did it was done through a department called the domestic contact service or DC s between nineteen forty eight and nineteen fifty six Klay delivered a total of thirty three separate reports through DC s there is no official reason for why he stopped in nineteen fifty six, well, you know, that's not entirely true. There was one. It's just not very helpful. Why the relationship ended after nineteen fifty six is not revealed in any of the recently declared. Fide CIA files or Shaw's own papers. Whatever the reason the documentary record is clear Shah was not handed off by the DC s and developed as a covert operative by the CIA's plans now operations directorate, the relationship just lapsed. That is a quote from the official government report on clay Shaw is reason for stopping his service to the DS to see there's not really a reason that we know interestingly, though, when Jim garrison arrested clay Shaw on March first nineteen sixty seven he didn't have any knowledge of a link to the CIA. He just thought clay was involved in the nation plot as soon as Jim arrested play the CIA started looking into clay Shaw to see if Jim garrison was onto something. That's when they discovered clay had submitted information to DC s as it happened guy who was in New Orleans office named Lloyd Ray was looking into clay, he knew Klay personally from when clay had been volunteering information to DC s just to play it safe and to make sure everyone knew about his personal relationship to the businessmen. Now under investigation for allegedly assassinating the president. He sent a message to the CIA general counsel. Explain. It. That's what caused things to blow up somehow a newspaper in Rome. Caught wind of Lloyd's cable that paper called paces Sarah published a connection between the New Orleans, businessman, clay Shaw, and the CIA this. Same paper had previously printed an article in nineteen sixty one two years before Kennedy's assassination claiming that the CIA was in league with a military coup in ALgeria now it was the first connection. Jim garrison had to the conspiracy and six years later, it resurfaced with this new article they spread the story about a group in Rome called CMC who they believed to be a sub organization of the CIA an organization that had ties to clay Shaw from there. It didn't take long for the stories to spread like wildfire in the media on April twenty fifth nineteen sixty seven the New Orleans states item newspaper published a front page story stating that the CIA was linked by evidence uncovered quote by an influence. Italian newspaper and quote before long. Clay Shaw was involved in a conspiracy to assassinate president Kennedy on orders from the CIA. At least that was the story that spread just a moment ago. I mentioned the Jim garrison didn't know anything about clay's connection to the CIA the reason for that was because at the time S was a top secret program. So Jim garrison didn't know anything about that. When he was investigating clay Shaw. He just knew about some threads that connect to Klay to the what he didn't know was that those threads were through the S program. And we're also threads that by the nineteen. Seventies also included hundreds of thousands of other businessmen and women like clay Shaw who voluntarily passed on information to DC S, who I told you it was complex even though we had to skip ahead a bit in the historical time line to get an overview, we didn't even begin to scratch the surface. You can read a much more detailed history of that. Over on the CIA official website only clued a link to it in the show notes for this episode at based on a true story podcast dot com. Of course, there's always the idea that if indeed the CIA were involved, then of course, they'd have something explaining their involvement. That's how cover-ups work after all. So I'll leave that up to you on how much you want to believe is truth. Back in the movie, the climactic ending takes place during the trial of clay Shaw. Jim garrison lays out the evidence for the jury and makes his case as a little side note to the trial was also where the public became aware of this uproot or film for the first time we've already talked about most of that evidence, including the now famous approver film. This trial did happen to date play shot is the only person to ever be put on trial for the assassination of president Kennedy. Even though he was the only person on trial. It's not like they thought he acted alone. Of course, Lee Harvey Oswald was named along with David Ferrie and some others. We haven't really talked much more about David Ferrie. He's the character played by Joe Pasha, if you recall, but as a quick side note, the movie was correct and showing that he died during the timeline of the investigation that happened on February twenty second nineteen sixty seven which was less than a week. After the media broke the news. Jim garrison was investigating the assassination. There was some suspicion around his death. Because the autopsy determined he died of natural causes, but they also found two suicide notes written when he was found dead. So which was it suicide or natural causes or was it that he planned on committing suicide and died of natural causes before he could we don't know. Nothing could be proven either way. So by the time play show was arrested and charged with conspiring to assassinate the president on March. First nineteen sixty seven the two main co conspirators named Lee Harvey Oswald. David Ferrie were already dead. Almost two years after being arrested on January twenty ninth nineteen sixty nine the trial began it lasted the entire month February and just like the movie shows when the jury deliberated on March first nineteen sixty nine they came out only one hour later and acquitted clay Shaw of the charges. Back in the movie, we see Kevin Costner's version of Jim garrison gets swarmed by reporters as he's leaving the courtroom entering questions about if he's going to resign or not Jim says, he's not going to resign. Hell run for district attorney again and he'll win again. And he'll continue the investigation for another thirty years because that's what he owes to Jack Kennedy and the country. He did not continue the investigation that long. Jim garrison was the district attorney New Orleans until nineteen seventy three when he was tried for accepting bribes an illegal pinball machine scandal, he was found not guilty, but certainly hurt his public image. And he was defeated in a reelection campaign as a fun little fact of the man who defeated him and became the new district. Attorney New Orleans was Harry Connick senior. Yes, that's the father of the singer. Back in the movie after Jim is hounded by the media. Their attention is drawn away as clay Shaw leaves the courtroom the horde of reporters migrate over to him. Leaving Jim to walk down the hallway alone with his wife. Finally, some taxed scrolls up. Giving us details about what happened after the investigation. I it says that in nineteen seventy nine man named Richard Helms who was the director of covert operations in nineteen sixty three admitted under oath that clay Shaw had worked for the CIA. That's not really true. Some of it is Richard Helms was indeed a deputy director for the CIA at the time. And he was deposed for a libel case related to a book called coulda ta in America, the part. That's not true is about how he admitted. The clay Shaw worked for the CIA. What Richard really said was quote, one time as a businessman clay Shaw was one of the part time contacts of the domestic context division, and quote, we already learned about the DC s. Domestic contact service or division as Richard called it. We also learned that even though S was under the CIA. Clay Shaw was just one of thousands and thousands of American citizens who gave information to the DCSS over the years. The next bit of taxed says that clay Shaw died in nineteen seventy four of lung cancer. And that no autopsy was allowed. That's true. Well, maybe Klay Shaw. Did I nineteen seventy four and it is true that clay Shaw was buried before? An autopsy could be performed. Some people have suggested perhaps this was on purpose to cover a more mysterious cause of death. But as far as I can tell them my research, there's never been any proof of that. Here's a brief excerpt from the police report from the officers who arrived on scene after clay's death. Although the exact cause of Mr. Shaw's death could never be determined. Without the results of an autopsy it is clearly evident that Mr. Shaw's condition was terminal during the week prior to his death. He was seen by his attending physician and was being made as comfortable as possible. As of the completion of this report. No evidence has been found to indicate that Mr. Shaw's death was anything but natural final classification to be made by the Orleans parish coroner's office. His official cause of death was lung cancer something attributed to his being chain smoker. If you recall timely Jones version of clay is almost always smoking a cigarette when you see him. Another bit of text in the movie says that between the years nineteen seventy six and nineteen Seventy-nine. A congressional investigation found a quote probable conspiracy and quote in the assassination of president Kennedy. But then it says as of nineteen ninety one when the movie was released nothing has been done about it. As the case for most of the facts throughout the movie were split with some truth in some well, stretching that truth with that said the statement in the movie is closer to straight truth. Another was a committee that looked into the assassination. There report was released in nineteen seventy nine way too long to include here, for example, just their summary of findings is four pages long. But here's a couple of the findings that I think are relevant the Federal Bureau of investigation failed to investigate adequately. The possibility of a conspiracy to assassinate the president. The Warren commission failed to investigate adequately. The possibility of a conspiracy to assassinate the president. Scientific acoustical evidence. Establishes a high probability that two gunmen fired at president John F Kennedy other scientific evidence does not preclude the possibility of two gunmen firing at the president scientific evidence negates some specific conspiracy allegations the committee believes on the basis of the evidence available to it that president John F Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy. The committee is unable to dentist the other gunman or the extent of the conspiracy. How I mean? That's pretty crazy. Right. The findings go on to say that based on evidence. They don't believe the Soviet or Cuban government were involved. And also didn't believe anti-castro groups were involved or a national syndicate of organized crime and last, but certainly not least the movie gets its bubble. Burst a bit. When the report mentioned, it also did not believe the CIA was involved in the assassination at all. I'll include a link to their official report in the show notes. So you can check it out yourself. Even though the movie says nothing was done since the movie's release in nineteen ninety one. There was a scientific study on the audio ballistics done in one thousand nine hundred eighty two we didn't talk about it at all. Because none of this is shown in the movie, but there was a police motorcycle that happened to have its microphone open at the time. So they studied the audio with the idea that if they were gunshots could be heard on the audio basically that report indicated that there wasn't anything that would support the conclusion of a second shooter. The final bit of taxed on screen in the movie says that the files of the house select committee on a sassy nations are locked away until the year twenty Twenty-nine. That's not true. But of course, there's no way the movie could know this those files were supposed to be released in twenty twenty nine. But after the movie was released that changed the movie spawned such a resurgence into the assassination of JFK that there was a new pressure to release previously top secret documents, then on October twenty six nineteen Ninety-two. Congress passed the president John F Kennedy assassination records collection act of nineteen ninety two. As part of the act aboard was set up to determine what they should do with the documents. For four years between nineteen ninety four and nineteen ninety eight the board met and tried to figure out what they should do. Finally, they determined the documents should be released by Tober of two thousand seventeen if you recall from a couple years ago when there was a massive dump of new JFK files released that was a result of the board's decision. What you may not know, though, is that the board itself was a direct result of the nineteen ninety one movie JFK. Here's a section from their final report. The suspicions created by government secrecy eroded, confidence in the truthfulness of federal agencies in general and damaged their credibility, finally frustrated by the lack of access and disturbed by the conclusions of Oliver Stone's JFK congress passed the president John F Kennedy assassination records collection act of nineteen Ninety-two mandating the gathering. An opening of all records concerned with the death of the president. this episode of based on a true story was written and produced by me, Dan, the fab whether or not you believe that conspiracy. Shown in the movie, there's little doubt that the film sparked a new interest in the assassination new evidence came to light. And as we learned at the end there. The government itself felt pressured to release a ton of documents more than two thousand eight hundred previously classified documents relating to the assassination of president Kennedy where released toward the end of two thousand seventeen there's so much more to the story. So many other theories a policies and evidence that could be an entire podcast series by itself. However, you want to learn more about this particular theory, that director Oliver Stone was trying to get across in his film. Then I'd recommend reading the two books. He based the movie on one of them is called crossfire the plot that killed Kennedy by Jim Marrs and the other is called on the trail of the assassins by. None other than the real person that Kevin Costner played in the movie, Jim garrison, even if you don't believe Jim garrison's version of the story, it's worth checking out those books to uncover a different angle. Maybe you hadn't thought of before. And of course, don't stop there. There are countless books and resources out there as always I've got links to Jim Marrs and Jim garrison's books as well as plenty more resources to start your own deep dive into the assassination of president John F Kennedy over at based on a true story podcast dot com. Okay. Now, it's time for the answer to our two truths and a lie game from the beginning of the episode as a refresher. Here are the two truth and one line number one Lee Harvey Oswald was killed just days after the assassination of JFK. Number two. Jim garrison received top secret information from a man only known as X. Number three to date. Play. Shaw is the only person put on trial for the assassination of JFK. Did you find out which one is ally? As we learned Oswald was shot and killed by Jack ruby just two days after the assassination of JFK. So number one is true. We also learned that even though Jim garrison believed. Clay Shaw was one person in greater conspiracy with Oswald. David Ferrie, both dead before the trial began that means clay Shaw is at least as of this recording the only person to have ever been put on trial for JFK's assassination. So number three is true. So that means the lie is number two. The secret of character only known as X in the movie was based on air force Colonel l Fletcher Prouty, but Jim garrison didn't get tips from Colonel Prouty that brings us to an end of this episode based on a true story producer Alec Ford to chatting with you again next Monday, when we'll look at some of the true story that we saw in the very fictional superhero. Wednesday 4/17/19 - JFK Magic Bullet Theory Part II

"Ibex today is Wednesday April seventeenth Chicago dog. Walk I- partout JFK you heard Parwan yesterday. If you didn't stop right now. Go listen to par one. We got chief back. We're talking JFK conspiracy theories. Let's get to it. So if you have a fifteen mile per hour wind which they did that day, and you're so far away and sixty feet up in the air and the gunshot was coming from inside a room like they're saying we have Oswald. How would you smell it? You know, three hundred yards away sixty feet down. Like it. Just doesn't seem like that. Makes a lot of sense. I'd be interested in find about if like the distance matters from six Florida the bottom floor how much because I'll tell you right now. This is like just I was by shooting at one point in my life. Okay. There's you know, we heard a couple of buddies, and there was a shooting two blocks away. Okay. Are like a block away. I should say. And we heard the clip get empty, and we smelled it from a block away on the ground on the ground. Okay. Yeah. So I mean, yeah. So that's why I I don't know. I granted don't get me wrong. I know there's a lot of different. Yeah. The wins. Maybe what kind of gun you used maybe kind of bolts using share? So I just wonder if that like the distance from, you know, six floors up is what the biggest variable is. I don't know pro-. Maybe I mean, I think the wind probably has a lot to do with that too. And and maybe that day the wind was blowing right in your face carry that that it was a hot warm sick day. I mean, right. You're very welcome. Yeah. I'm not trying to put my experiences into the. Don't get me wrong. But I'm just saying, I it's it's interesting like the gunpowder theory. It's just witnessed eight minutes. Like who knows like they can just be like. Yeah. You know, if you try to remember something from a week ago, even if it's something like that you might be able to like, yeah. And I think smelled gunpowder. And then you just convince yourself, you're right. You never know. But that is I found that to be compelling, especially because some of the witnesses who gave those statements where people who fought in World War Two in Korea people who were in the police department people who are used to the smell of gunpowder, and like would be it's not like some, you know, soccer mom who's like Alec mistaken. Yeah. Some guy who and sixth grader to shoes like a year ago a year ago. Okay. I was just assuming it was like north west side. No was like, you're okay. Uh-huh. Yeah. You're exactly right. But but regardless the George he theories like super interesting because of course, like you're driving. It's a hectic situation. You see the guy you're supposed to be protecting get shot. You're gonna grab your gun getting jerked back and shooting someone on accident. It's very plausible, very plausible. And then you know, we talked about the the bullet that was exploding. Well, when they did the autopsy, and they have the the path Allah GIS on record both at the time of the of the autopsy, and then the Clinton administration did like a deep dive and declassified a bunch of documents, and then re interviewed witnesses and the pathologist was like, yeah. There are these these radio, I think he call it radio Paik fragments which basically means like microscopic shards from the bullet all over like they've found they dug out like thirty at least thirty pieces of these like, very. Tiny metal bullet fragments out of JFK's head and the bullets ho Lee Harvey Oswald, redoing are incapable of that. And especially like, they have the magic bullet ends up being a very pristine bullet. So it creates all these injuries, and and usually those bullets get mangled, then you're going to have the another bullet fire from the same gun explode. You know, that just doesn't make any sense. So so the, and that's I feel like that's a piece of evidence that never really gets talked about like the like it was a different bullet. And it was a bullet that matched. What would be carried in air fifteen by the secret service Harvey Oswald? Could've just jam this bullet in his gun and shot it that doesn't work that way. Right. Doesn't work. Right. And you're not gonna fire. Like, I'm going to have the first one be a standard bull. And the second one is going to be hollow point like, you know. And if you watch the if you watch the documentary you see how the investigation got botched autopsy how got botch from the get-go rather they wanted to take them right back to Washington. Demanded this the president and the doctor and the secret service had like standoff raise because he tried it because it's Texas law. And I think it's a very common law that you can't you know, you need the chain of evidence. So like you need to perform the autopsy before you can take the body away from the scene of the crime. And they just like, Nope. We're doing this back in DC, and they had like thirty different people doing the autopsy because there's like the army need to be Representative the chief of staff in there, you had all kinds of people and just all kinds of commotion that it's just not normal scene. Where typically when you have an autopsy, it's like two or. Three doctors who who is the vice president this time Lyndon Johnson. So like, where's this guy? So he was sworn in on the plane like there's a famous photo of Jackie Kennedy. But I think it's probably I I can't remember exactly where he was. But I'm sure he was in a secure location. I know that you know, they they're talking. They're George Hickey was placed in the hospital carrying the same gun. And they were like, yeah. He was there to protect Lyndon Johnson. In case there's something else happened. But it's like, you know, they all had those like they had those AR fifteen that day, and then quickly before the Warren commission, even got started they removed them like the secret service like the cover up here and the conspiracy here is protecting George Hickey, and maybe the secret service as a whole because there's all kinds of like the theories about who had the motivation to kill him was at the mob was it because you know, Bobby Kennedy was prosecuted the mob after the mob yet Jack elected, so they felt slighted, and that's where the Jack ruby thing comes in and did Lyndon Johnson wanna do whether people who are trying to like Kennedy. Kennedy didn't want to go to war. He didn't wanna go to you didn't want to go to Vietnam. And it's like, well, maybe, you know, the the powers that be inside the government wanted to sell more helicopters and get deals done. So we gotta get rid of this guy. So we can keep the warm sheen going, and so maybe Linden Johnson's just like I'll give your war fucking kill him. I want to be the president. So like, no one like there's lots of theories out there. But this one this one really just deals with the science. And it makes it seem like maybe you had maybe maybe Oswald was there to like do a job from powers-that-be. We can't speak to that. But this really kind of to me proves within shower of that that he didn't fire that kill shot. Yeah. I mean the proof is there with the bullet. Yeah. It really is. I mean, they go this documented such a good job for like an idiot. Like me to be like, oh, like, this is how physics and ballistics work, and they like break it down for you. And it's just like within it like, there's no doubt in my mind. George Hickey fell backwards fire the shot and was like oh fuck how how we're gonna cover this up. And I think the secret services just like, hey, like, you know, we're all Oliver joggers. They like if found out that then people say it was like an inside job. If the secret service was the one who actually fired the kill shot. Like, you know, like, there's there's plenty of motivation to cover it up at that point camp at friendly fire happens, right? Like it happened, much shocks. Yeah. And herons like why would they go at this great length to do this? I just don't get it. I mean, I think I think I from me I would say the motivation would be to protect your shaky. So he can continue to work and have imagine being the guy who's publicly out there as I accidentally killed the most popular president of all time. Yeah. At the same time. It's like you're gonna demon. Like, I think people would think that ruins your life. Like you like think of like the shitty mistakes that you've made in your life and how they say with you. You didn't murder the president, Ed? Yeah. I know don't get me wrong. I know he would be demonized fully understand that. But is that worth like having a conspiracy theory about around how a president died rather than take a guy? Make a guy have heat. You look more incompetent trying to cover shit up than he would being like, hey, our incompetence led this to happen. I think so I think there's an argument for that, certainly. But then I think if it's like, yeah. Hickey killed him. Hickey? We had there was chaos. Hickey killed him by accident. And I think it's like wait a government official killed them. And now, we're in more in Vietnam. Are you sure it was an accident? You know, like that you know, like we just killed him in the chaos and all new it was going on. And sure it was an accident. But we're not going to charge Hickey with anything. I think I think the president United States gets killed. It's a conspiracy. No matter what. And then if you admit that. Who was like a quote unquote inside job, then I think that can spiral out of control. And then you're talking about the institution of the government, the institution of the secret service like their credibility going for like who can you actually trust in the government? I think it's like, hey, we have shooter. Let's find a way to put it all on him dated the whole fucking thing. Just alone just a low nut, just alone crazy guy. Unbelievable. I mean, it was crazy. Correct. How we can do that another time to getting into like all Harvey Oswald. He lived in Russia fair period of time. He got he got. There was evidence of him being every good conspiracy revolves around Russia. There are shady bunch over there. Shady bunch so, but yeah, then he was in Mexico City that the Cuban embassy. He was he was all, but then the picture of him down. There was like that's some fucking fat guy with the mustache look like big cat. It wasn't. It wasn't didn't look like him. But that's like the picture that the government put out seemed like he see he was down there. Like, maybe it was maybe it was the Cubans wanted to kill. Kennedy like there's all kinds of different plots and narratives around it's like a fascinating thing. But as far as the kill Shaq goes, I think the mystery has been solved, I think this. I think this thing solve the mystery of that final shot so who killed JFK George Hagi. Fucking idiot. Put the safety on at the safety. Oh, all right. Yeah. We're coming Zana's or anything else you want to get out there from this exact theory 'cause I said the grassy knoll. You know? I think grassy knoll is out. I think grass Hals really out on it out on the grassy knoll. We're going to get to it though. We can talk. We still have to talk about because that's like everyone loves I think everyone just likes the word grassy knoll. Yes. One of those. And that's the thing we everybody. Let's maybe we should all watch JFK like we should just have JFK while. Yeah. Yeah. Bring it down hour by hour because that gets and I love Kevin Costner best actor of all time. And yeah. So that they really get into like they pushed the grassy knoll conspiracy that they're sheers over there. They're like mysterious figures over there. And then they were seeing people fleeing from that area by witnesses. So it's very like there's all kinds of like who saw what no one really knows. But now the president is dead. So there's lots of different threads to pull on with the Kennedy assassination. Yeah. And then also you could let us know what? Twenty-one talk about next. Yeah. It's up ahead. Fangled you want exactly about how Castro didn't was trying to kill Kennedy. Kennedy killed him gets aqua your fucking so deep into these dude. I love it. I love out. Yeah. It's amazing. But all right. That was JFK the smoking gun, basically where we didn't even talk about a conspiracy theory. Like, you said we just talked about the bullets and the Melissa six and launch angles. And I felt like I was like a stat nerds right there. Yeah. Big center. But like it was still like who who who did it? There was a conspiracy to the cover up is a conspiracy for sure. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely start everybody that is it for today. We will catch you next time bang.

I know the public image and the public image was that they were a beautiful couple and that it looked like they had each found their soul mates and that it was going to be very very hard for John. F. Kennedy Junior to to find the right lady and looked very clear that he had a photographer. Lawrence Schwartz Fall took dozens of pitches of John Junior including many of the shots of the couple together. They seemed that there was a lot of love between them. And you can see that in the photographs that were taken advancing everywhere else. They were together but I said sure. She was very feisty independent. She could be a little more emotional than he was on. September twenty first nineteen ninety six. John Junior Fani put his playboy dies behind him he and caroline married in a candlelight ceremony on the remote Georgia island of Cumberland Judah the dramas of the previous years. The service was kept secret from the press and when the story broke the following day it might headlines across the world after they were married it was a huge worldwide story in the pictures. Almost everything you shot of those any good would sell around the world and that was a little difficult for him. He lost his privacy down there and caroline his wife was really had a difficult time with it for Caroline. The pressure of marrying into America's most famous family was there from the stop and with that pressure can the knowledge that as we saw in the past episodes John was always going to be a target. He is reporter Andy Tillett JFK. Junior had always made a point of showing how an afraid. He was of any potential threats to his life almost to the point of behaving in its elaborately reckless manner. A lot of the time but caroline was a different matter. She was basically just an ordinary young woman. She had not been brought up the security protection or an uncle who could pull strings with the FBI and she had certainly never been followed around by hordes of aggressive Paparazzi. In the way that John had was an awful lot for her to take. Barry Levine. Also says that for Caroline marrying John was a bigger decision in a great dilemma than it may have seemed John knew that caroline was going to be the one caroline of course was in love with John but at the same time was so fearful about marrying into you know basically marrying the Prince of camelot that she had long discussions with her sisters her mom over whether or not she could handle the pressure that would come along with being the wife of JFK. Junior and it really tore at her because this was a woman who absolutely loved John. But at the same time knew the dangers. That would come along with marrying a candidate. Not any Kennedy from the extended Kennedy family. Jfk junior the son of the slain president but at the end of the day caroline besets heart one out and she gave into John and the two were married in what turned out to be a private ceremony on a small island off the East Coast that John took particular pride in terms of escaping the pop rats Razzi of course it followed John since he was a little boy and would in the mud. S- leading up to the WED the Paparazzi. In New York would swarm the tribeca apartment loft where he and caroline beset lived and is Lawrence forts. Fault explains the pressure. Caroline was under was obvious from the very start of the marriage. John introduced her to the press right after they return home from the honeymoon. And you know. They're probably about forty photographers and video photographers. Outside the loft and she was terrified. You see the vein in her neck just bulging and I kind of knew at that point that there was going to be problems in their marriage because her visceral reaction to being in the public eye. Was You know horrific? It was so apparent of body language that I just knew that it wasn't going to work out you know. We learned subsequently that there were so many problems in their marriage and how what would have turned out but it didn't look like it was going to last to me. John and Caroline attempted to settle into married life. Caroline tried to develop around strategies for coping with the constant pressures. She took a leaf from a husband's book to try. And Take the calm approach. Where possible. Well I mean he was You know the Prince of the city people really liked him. He engaged with people regular folks. Caroline was much more interested in public. She didn't want to engage even actress our photographers and she except once. You Dip posed for me which was shocking. Time magazine was looking for a cover story so I saw her and I spoke to her and she posted me became worldwide. News time. Didn't use by photo but I didn't interview. Cps They ran the pictures and she was very lovely when she was like that. But there are some real. Crappy disgust photographers. Who would bother them and her life very difficult and his difficult but he was tough guy and you know it would roll off shoulders more easily where caroline was. Just you know. I don't know if she would ever have adjusted to it. I think that would eventually moved out of the city as there were rumored to have you know moved to Connecticut or to someplace which sort of better but John. If you want pictures of me that's fine but what caroline go about her life in New York look. Caroline go about her job at Calvin Klein and he would personally pleaded with numbers in Paparazzi for for them to give Caroline space because he knew how difficult it was for her he of course it had grown up with cameras in his face from the he was a little boy hall of his Romances. Playing Frisbee and Central Park with Daryl Hannah going on dates to fancy restaurants in New York. John was accustomed to photographers and camera. Crews following him everywhere he went he understood his position in the Kennedy family. He understood what came along with in the son of President Canada but he didn't wish any of that on caroline beset and she really had difficulty with the press in the years before the plane crash to the point where it lead her into great. Merrill strive with John. A lot of it had to do with the constant attention of every single thing. She did that. She is being followed by reporters and Paparazzi and it was just overwhelming for Caroline. There was a relationship that caroline entered into With an old model male model friend of hers there was some drug use. All of this. We believe the result of this public wife Stat. She had to endure and certainly had to live within. Just a few years of the fairytale witting the marriage of John Jr. and Caroline was in trouble as Leon Wagner. Explains the disintegration of the relationship was playing out in the glare of the media spotlight including accusations of drug abuse and infidelity? There were fighting all the time and and they thought in public for reasons best to themselves. He was having these roaring shouting matches with with his wife. It was around that period that she started with his underwear model and really effectively pushed him out of her life and he spent all of his time. Either at the George Office or at the San Hotel where then lift and just voided her until the fatal plane ride photographer. Lawrence fourfold insists the reports of the public rows and the screaming matches with vastly exaggerated. No I've never seen John and caroline engage in any kind of argument or noticed any friction between them. They were always you know seemed very comfortable with one another sometimes more affectionate than others in the Times that I did see them together but no I could infer any problems in their relationship from what I witnessed at the same time George. The magazine John Junior had launched amidst huge fanfare of pump and publicity is earlier was also suffering from declining appetizing styles and a folding readership. He's Andy Tillett. George magazine really was Jeff Cajun Baby. It was a project he felt passionately about an I. It was a huge success. Because let's not pretend the magazine was basically print embodiment of John Himself. It was politics extension of celebrity and celebrities brench politics. I mean that's him right. That's the Kennedys the political celebrities celebrity politicians and then after year or to shine kind of war of the Gimmick wolfing plus. The Internet really started to kick in whole media landscape changed. People just stopped buying any kind of disease George included as Linda Messer Rela and Leo Wagner explained. The huge personal investment. John had pulled into George meant he took the magazines filings too hot at that time with George. His mother was also in publishing creating a political magazine something. His mother could stomach however way the George came out was not political. Magazine was more of a celebrity magazine. So were you know John's wanting badly celebrity things so his one foray into doing a political and something straight ended up becoming celebrity with Cindy Crawford on the cover is was supposed to be a political magazine but he kept bringing in celebrities and using it to go to parties or celebrities but that that George magazine was definitely one of his mother's ideas as well because his mother was in publishing and she was encouraging him. Boo perhaps. The first Tom and he's live. Jfk Junior was facing the thought that perhaps he might be a failure boating business any marriage an all this coming at a time when as we have previously discovered the FBI had invested a plane by a ruthless cocaine cartel to snatch him from the streets of New York holding to ransom and possibly even killing for no reason other than the fact that he was a Kennedy junior needed to escape from the pressure and his Berry Levin tells us he found it in the skies. John of course love fly he would tell caroline he would tell his friends that the only time he really ever felt at peace because of having such a public life of being followed around by photographers he felt at peace when he was flying in the air flying through the clouds. This brought John Tremendous personal joy. And that's why he wanted to get this pilot's license why he took flying lessons why he became obsessed with being an airplane pilot. It wasn't so much to able to shuttle himself from one location to the next or not having to get on a commercial jet that nothing to do with that it had to do with this inner peace. John felt when he was completely alone when he was flying through the sky on a blue perfect sunny day. That's where John fell at ease with his world. Everything was left behind and it was just him at the controls of the plane flying through the sky flying through the clouds. John was to happiest when he was at the controls of his plan. John Junior took flying lessons at the Flight Safety Academy in Vero Beach Florida. Andy Naipaul nineteen ninety eight. He received his private pilot licence a year later. He received his high performance airplane and complex airplane endorsement meaning. He was licensed to fly planes. That you see it. Smaller fields single or twin engine. Cessnas pipe is in the like but that did not mean. He was a fully qualified pilot. Jfk Historian John Hanky and a crushing Vista Guide. Richard Binda explain how junior was yet to be certified to fly at not by way of instrument. Only he was working on getting his instrument license and he had passed the written exam and he had passed the performance exam and all the ad do in order to qualify for is licensed was to fly to log hours under the supervision of a flight instructor. I mean he was licensed to and all that but he didn't have an instrument rating. He was training to fly on instruments. Apparently after talking to his instruct up he had a an issue with Remembering what instruments. He should have been looking at who he didn't have his instruments scanned down. And what I mean by. That is when you fly in instruments. You're main focuses on your attitude indicator in the airplane and then it goes from there you go to the airspeed indicator and you you sorta do this scanning the instrument panel. I mean that's the correct way to do. It apparently had trouble with that pudding to his instructor which is why he had set him up to take the test for his instrument. Rainy July nineteen ninety nine. Junior had logged an estimated three hundred ten hours of flight experience of which fifty five hours had been at night with an instructor present sitting alongside him in April following his complex plane endorsement. He bought himself a Piper Saratoga aircraft. That's a six seater single engine. High performance aircraft by the time of his final flight. He had flown a mere thirty six hours in that aircraft of which just three hours without a certified Friday struck to sitting beside him. He was still learning building up his experience and hours his fellow pilots. Carl Bailey who was also a regular at the same airport in New Jersey from which John Junior flu at the time afterwards it all came out that JFK had you know for argument's sake let's say a couple hundred hours But at that time we didn't know that we knew he was a new pilot. Didn't know how much he was flying. Or if he had his instrument her is commercial rating. I just know he showed up at the airport every Friday. He was relatively a new pilot and I would talk to other people out of the airport about you know encounters with them. This was a single engine airplane so he didn't have as many gauges to look at especially involving the engine functioning instruments. Which is all the scan. But even though that's the case if you don't have that scanned down when you're flying on the instruments you can get in trouble real easy. Who's your brain is telling you. You're in one position when in actuality you're in some other position and that's what they call spatial disorientation. Richard Bender explains why an instrument writing is crucial to safe flying especially at night while the attitude indicator is an instrument that shows whether the airplane straight and level banking one way or the other turning in other words descending or climbing and it's a very simple instrument but it's so viability and one of the things that I things I learned about vying was you always WanNa make sure that that straight and level unless you're coming in for landing or because it's so easy especially in this area and in this kind of weather you can get into that. Hot Hazy Humid type of net day or night and when it's get stark it usually brings fog and again you lose all reference to the ground. Well she problem is a specially would What we call a via far pilot visual flight rules. He doesn't have that knowledge to be able to focus on that end. Believe what it also. Biggest problem with pilots are especially of the F. R. PILOT IN INSTRUMENT CONDITIONS. If he doesn't believe what the instruments at telling him then he's got a real problem if he doesn't believe it he's going to follow what is bodies owing him and if his body is telling him is straight and level he's GonNa think straight and level because he sees the even though we might see it on the attitude indicator he's not believing it side to describe it but You know that's what happens. I had it happened to me. Maybe once or twice in thirty years of flying but it does happen. John Genius Papa. Sierra Tiga was not the only means by which he escaped stresses of filing magazine and defiling marriage amid two months before his death. Junior treated himself to another flying machine. A lightweight Buckeye power would muttering parachute more commonly known as an ultralight paraglider. These machines need a real skill to fly them. Andy tillered explains these kind of ultralight aircraft. Look like a kind of flying chair with a parachute off of it that powered by an engine behind the pilot with the control. Your feet conduct paragliding sitting down with the motor and although they might look most sane people like death trump's the inclusion of the parachute means. There's actually an additional level of safety there if something does go wrong with the engine than the idea is you can simply glide safely by down to the ground with the parachute but even with this additional level of safety they still come down in. May Nineteen Ninety nine John. Junior Christie's ultralight in Martha's vineyard breaking his ankle badly. He's injury was serious enough to hinder. He's flying. And course protracted medical treatment as well as medication. He's work colleagues recall. He was in a bad way. He's flight instructors noted he had trouble multitasking. He was stuck wearing a heavy cast and had to use crutches wrought up until he's fond of flight. He's Leone Wagner and Berry Levin He'd been gliding and had fallen and had really damaged his right leg so his right leg was a cast. Which clearly impede your ability to fly. An airplane especially near the pilot was impaired by physical injury. He just had a cast off on his foot from a paragliding injury that he had but he needed the cast off his foot so he can operate the plane's Rudder Foot pedals so twenty four hours before the the flight John had the cast taken off and in fact he was limping. He was seen by witnesses limping at the airport. He was also photographed. The choir turned up the last picture of him. Sadly which was the night before with John was on crutches attending a Yankees baseball game. But on this particular night as I said John the day before had the cast taken off his foot. He was still limping from that. Injury fell. I Pol at Carlisle. Bilje was the last man to say John Junior alive and also witnessed him hobbling around with his ankle injury as junior board at. He's fond of flight unsure of how it affected. Juniors performance call talks us through what he saw code. Juniors injury have hindered. He's flying. There really wasn't any visible impairment from his ankle. Injury other than a slight limp is what I saw. He kind of let was pretty much hobbling around and from my understanding even with that type of injury and you know as a pilot that would affect the control of the of the rudders possibly but it wouldn't be something as critical as say a broken arm or something where you can use. Both your hands went on the fraud on one on the yoke so in my mind that was always secondary. And I kind of you. That injury you know looking back on it as pretty insignificant into as far as what what the the outcome was of the airplane being destroyed we shall see just how significant it really was as we dig deeper into the flight analysis to find out what really happened up the in the sky. Above Martha's Vineyard. The location of his ultralight crash only nine weeks previous next time on fight avoids the death of Jive Kajiya the crash and the conspiracy theories. It became a huge story. I would say it could only be equalled with the death of Princess Diana or a major major tragedy. "A lot of people came up to me after the crash in the monsignors. After and said why didn't you say anything to him that the weather weather is bad and and I told her I said it's not my position or it would be inappropriate as a pilot to go to a fellow pilot and kind of give a suggestion. It would be like being here in New York City on a snowy day and you come out of your office and you see some getting in the car and saying hey. I don't think you should be driving in this weather. You probably would be punched in the face by fellow New Yorker. It's kind of the same thing in you have to trust the confidence. Welcome to episode Sri Fatal Voyage John F. Kennedy Junior case solved with me X. homicide detective caller McLaren. We've already seen how John Junior had been born into. A family blissed list with extraordinary success but also seemingly cursed with terrible misfortunes. So it seems there's just. This kind of litany of recklessness bad behavior criminality and Battler crooning through all these kids. It seems like one thing I another. They just get the bacteria which generation after generation. Now we're going to trace. How busy came into his Prime Jones sought to Lee bow to his family? Nine in more ways than one we know he was good looking at. We know there were a lot of women claim to known quite well. Actress in Royal Families List is quite long brook. Shales Cindy Crawford Sarah Jessica Parker Daryl. Hannah Madonna his dating. History is like A. Who's who of hottest women of the eighties and nineties? But also how ultimately he couldn't escape the Daca side of the Kennedy Legacy John F. Kennedy junior may have had a death wish when he took that plane up July the Sixteenth nineteen ninety nine had been a hazy Schumer. She May die in the northeast sites and as the evening fog settled in a single engine. Piper Saratoga aircraft turned and banked in the skies about Martha's the vineyard it was piloted by John Junior and on board was his wife Caroline and her sister Lauren. Junior had lost his bearings and he was losing control. What it is good to sending and of course as you descend airspeed increases? So what what you do is you pull back on the controls. The yoke to try to stop it descending. But if you're in a turn whether you know it or not soon as you start apple and back you increase the rate attor and he just literally spinning and fellow pilots silence. You knew John. Junior Co Bailey gives us rare insight into what was happening every instructor instrument instructor. Doctor will tell you when you're flying instruments disregard all the signals that your body is telling you you have to understand the instruments or right and believe what the instruments are telling you. Now will your body is telling you so in this instance Jeff. Junior probably was going with what his body was telling him and plus I'm sure he was was panicked. I'm sure he probably was sweating. And he had probably upset passages in the in the back wondering what's going on so everything going on probably complicated the situation and made him more more anxious and there were there was probably more anxiety and he didn't do what instructor probably told him and flight training where trust those instruments the instruments right caroline was in an argument to mode and choose shrieking yelling at him as yes he was trying to fly the plane and I'm sure that all the stuff the things that were on his mind the end of his marriage all all this was weighing on him so with all this pressure he. He's trying to fly this plane and he just got lost in the fog. Richard been was part of the air crash. Investigation team that examined the wreckage of genius plying. What happened and as he got into a situation that well to use the aviation binocular he got into a graveyard spiral we call called the graveyard spiral is. That's probably the last thing you want the way that the way to die in a plane is because literally as a high speed corks growing growing up the plane spiraling down to either land or in this case to the ocean. So just to give you an example. So in Enormou- flight. If I see that the plane is descending sending my normal thing is to pull back on the control column to gain altitude to recover from a plane that's going downward so now. He's seeing seeing his altimeter completely. Unwinding the spiral corkscrewing down to the ocean. So as an unexperienced pilot. He's probably pulling pulling back on the control column but since the plane is in a turn going downward thou pulling back on the control column is actually making the spiral Tighter and increasing these g forces tremendously possibly over stressing the plane and possibly causing components of the airplane of fail such such as the wing parts of the tail perhaps parts of the flaps for landing gear if it was extended or not. So can you. If you could imagine that and you probably ably has. I'm sure screaming passengers in the back realizing that things are ongoing. Well put it very lightly and everything happening and now. He's he's doing this pulling back and now that's getting tighter so I mean it probably was complete chaos and I'm sure he was probably aware that the end is probably early common then he goes into a steep dive and now she's probably shrieking you can louder and and they killed so you're flying and then you hit the water. It's the snap of a finger everybody's dead it. Just stop a finger. Everything is over typically over water hitting the water at that speed in a dive like that the mini. It's an impact that the whole plane's completely destroyed the bodies are probably probably just completely beyond recognition from from the impact in the G. Forces Downey went. You went in in back to the ocean recover. The wreckage was pretty. Well chewed up with what we call hydrostatics damage to the airplane. Really I mean there. There's no way it was survivable by anyone in here as the news break. JFK Genius plane was missing the media. Nia Frenzy exploded. Could the Kennedy curse have struck again and of climbed its biggest victim since the assassination of Bobby Kennedy thirty earlier they all. I'm telling you is that we got an e L T hit. It was one thing I was picked up by the air force. C. One thirty we have asked the Rudy to break away from its current work and to go over and investigate it. We're now centering. Our search about seventeen miles wet vineyard the approach to fit the airport co Bali. WHO Would Watch John Tyco from Essex County April that same evening returned in the morning to a scene of utter chaos? So I want to the airport. I saw some police cars. It was starting to get light. It was like for maybe an hour or two probably two hours prior. And that's when everything went crazy I went to the Associated Press and then it was like the whole media just kind of exploded on the airport work but I initially told the media the I reporters are on the scene. I said unfortunately if this plane isn't found within the next few hours that it's it's not going to be a good outcome so what was happening all the pieces of the puzzle kind. Were coming through me so we all these reporters from all around the world. People People in Boston people along there everyone was working their sources trying to get information so there was two young girls who actually I came across that night and they stopped me when I had my Duffel bag and they said we just saw JFK. Junior there were giggling and laughing like they couldn't believe it and they apparently I I think attempted or wave to them or make contact with them and he said hello to him and a reporter. Call me and said apparently that the car has been. I'm told that there was a ransom note on the car and I put two and two together and I said that was probably the two girls probably after he left. Probably put a love note on on the car and your phone number or something so I was getting all kind of bits and pieces of the puzzle. Everything was coming through me and reporters reporters were calling me like from all around the world asking me. We've heard this. What does this mean? What does that mean? So they were kind of using me for information because because they didn't technicalities of aviation and but yeah. I was getting a lot of information. Kind of putting the whole jigsaw puzzle together and then it was just chaos. They ask for from that point. History always repeat itself and this isn't the first time the. It was a sad and lonely into what had been a life filled with such potential. He always have this life with grace and style. Dial and it's type of person I think even now could remember because he lived about politics love by all people and there are so few like anymore And perhaps the saddest thing was the lingering feeling that juniors potential had never really been fulfilled his reporter Andy Tillett make no mistake in the eighties. Nineties JFK. Junior was a huge celebrity. Had not only inherited his father's name but he also had his good looks Wchs charm and big personality to the only question was what was he gonNa do with himself. Because certainly I hip hit pretty hesitant about a political career. He traveled for a while. He failed The New York bar exam twice before finally passing it. He wrote some articles for the New York Times. He dabbled in acting. Doug Wade who has written dozens of books on American presidents and their families explains that acting may have appealed to junior precisely Ashley because it provided a means of escaping famous name. He wanted to be an actor he could have been a great actor. He was handsome. All through through history. Children of presidents have been on the stage. I asked Jack floored interviewed him and I said why were you an actor. And why are so many children of presidents it's actors. Why did John F. Kennedy Junior wanted to be an and Jack Ford said I don't know about the rest of but for me? It was the one time I could get on stage. Agent belt outlines. Nobody could get mad at me are see political influence in those lines as they were written by somebody else so for whatever his reasons. JFK Junior wanted to be an actor. He was a heart throb. Good Look Guy. You probably would've been great at it but Jackie Jackie Kennedy put her foot down absolutely not so it was kind of like. I'm not saying you have to be president but you can't be this. You can't be that you can't be this all the other doors. She would try to close and before her death. She sent him a note that said you who especially have a place in history and of course he died himself just shortly after she wrote roading that note and she died but there was he he had to a felt it all his life even though she never said it he here was this note. You have a place of history. He had to know she was thinking that. Feel that pressure. Jackie Kennedy put pressure on her son junior in other ways to throughout the eighties nineties. JFK Genie dated was linked to many of the most desirable women of the age. supermodels like Cindy Crawford alias. Actresses like Daryl Hannah Brooke Shields even Madonna and the thing was it was never like he was punching above his weight celebrity. Wise another of his girlfriend's Sarah Jessica Parker later Said said she had no idea what real fame was until she dated him for the same time perhaps because of his dad's famous fondness for pretty face. You always got the sense. That Mum Jackie did not approve his report. Leon Wagner who would become close to the family. When John Junior was a teenager is another died in ninety four and obviously it was a blow? He he loved his mother He. He told the friends that uh he'd been born again when she died that he was free and he had made his own decisions. Make mistakes. What have you? And he dearly didn't want to break up with those glamorous comedy stars but she drove a wedge between never she she was just a conniving kind of controlling mother was around the time his mother died that he started dating caroline beset. She was definitely different to his other girlfriends. She was beautiful of course but she wasn't famous in her own rights. She worked for Calvin Klein outside of a very closed. Small fashioned straight straight. Nobody'd ever really heard of before they got together John Caroline began dating in nineteen ninety four. The following year. She moved into a tribeca apartment and they soon became engaged in nineteen ninety-six. She left her job at Kelvin. Kline and they got married in September la in a ceremony they somehow manage to keep sacred from the press as Leon Wagner and Doug Wade explain for a while they seem to be the quintessential couple when they first met. She seemed the and I've had numerous friends of both him him and caroline shoes pretty sober and he always worked very hard in the fashion industry and was surrounded by fashion people all the time at their house in Soho. They had parties constantly with models and fashion designers. And what have you. And she was in control in as they say that they were happy. I know the public image and in and that the public image was that they were a beautiful couple that it looked like they had each found their soul mates and that it was going to be very very hard hard for John F. Kennedy Junior to to find the right lady ended looked very clear that he had and with happiness. These private life junior finally found fulfillment in his professional career in nineteen ninety-five he and his friend. Michael Boom public-relations supremo found George an ambitious glossy monthly lifestyle magazine. The tagline was not just politics politics as usual and the debut issue featured Cindy Crawford in a bikini top dressed as George Washington I think his surreal moment of accomplishment was with the publishing of George the publishing of his magazine his old friends. The president's old friends told John F. Kennedy Junior that your dad always wanted to be a publisher. His dream was to be a publisher. He never wanted to go in the politics. That's what his dad wanted to do. So John Kennedy. Jr. Did what many presidential visited children will do. He did what his father said he wanted to do. Whether it was real or not. And that's was a great big moment in his life when he published George and it was a great magazine and it was a wonderful reflection of him and his in how he thinks is diversity colorful personality George Magazine which was a magazine that was was his baby his creation and he completely controlled the magazine. He decided who's going to be on the cover who's going to be interviewed. A lifestyle political politics is entertainment magazine. A slick big magazine a big colorful magazine. That was part of his creating something completely on his own and taking charge of his life which hid never been allowed to do as long as Jackie was alive because she would always interfere and she would criticize him. Shoot telling. You can't do that or you shouldn't do that. And he pretty much obeyed her orders. Even though he didn't onto the happiness was not to last George magazine had launched with a huge fanfare and once held the largest circulation of any political magazine in America. It's pop culture. meets politics genre soon. Wore thin redistricted off in with them so did advertises within a couple of years. George had gone from the Hottest Media Property Manhattan to a loss making white elephant. George using made a big splash and attracted a lot of attention and a lot of people liked it but it was just the exact wrong time to start big flashy magazine. It was the dawn of the Internet. It was was it. Just a different thing in magazines like that just weren't GonNa work no matter how good they were and George started to flounder by nineteen ninety nine things were falling apart for JFK. Junior he's beloved magazine was in freefall and rather than spending his days directing acting. Glamorous cavas shoots or interviewing cultural icons he was instead frantically trying to secure investors for his project and away from the office. He's marriage. Marriage was also disintegrating he's Kennedy reporter. Leon Wagner he married Caroline this who is fashion east. That's cool worked for Calvin Klein and was elegant. Beautiful woman and crazy absolutely crazy and turned out his his his wife had was constantly at drugs all over their apartment and used when they traveled. And what have you. He certainly didn't want to get arrested given who he was that she used cocaine regularly and he had several screaming fights with with her where he screamed your goddamn cocaine head to cocaine spiraled out of control and other drugs well marijuana obviously and that's when he became angry at her and yelled out or and curse dot or for. You're doing that for subjecting him to that. And that apparently major even crazier they had fights on top fights and the marriage was doomed from the beginning. I think but she had an affair with an an underwear model named Michael. Bergen during their marriage reported. Andy Tillett describes how the media reacted to John's troubled doubled marriage. Well the with these rumors flying around about her drug use and the she was having an affair with discarding Michael Bergin and how by some in nineteen thousand nine. There were pretty much separated a when they were seen together. The always seem to be arguing and of course any high profile couple going through what they were going through would be newsworthy. But it's JFK. Junior fast front page news. I mean it's sad. In retrospect of course it moved out of their apartment. He was living in a hotel. His wife's apparently seeing this model title is magazine is failing he must have felt horribly alone. The irony in certain senses that went John went to the offices of George magazine. During that period he had to walk right past a huge billboard of Michael Bergen in his Calvin Klein underwear up over Broadway and I. I don't know for a fact that he knew you about the affair yet but I think he found out in in that period of time but so D. magazine was failing his marriage was was gone was miss more or less finished but he was still fighting with with caroline. He had moved out of their their house in Soho Oh and moved to the Stanhope Hotel. up on Fifth Avenue and Living by himself they're desperately trying to Say This magazine and Trying to convince people to invest in it and what have you including some of his relatives and the most not turned him down because I thought it was throwing good money after bad and it was then that he decided to to fly up to Martha's vineyard. For a wedding of Rory Kennedy cousin it was was against these turbulent professional and personal backdrop the John Prepared to fly along with Caroline and assist alarm from New Jersey to. Martha's has been you'd fellay pilot. COBB EILLY was one of the last people to see John Junior alive so that the day of Friday the sixteenth of July nineteen ninety nine was a typical. He's e- hot and Humid Summer Day. In aviation we call that the three ages standing for hazy hot and humid. You just oppressively hot looking at the Blue Sky New York City skyline surrounding matlins. Everything pretty much you could see the smog and the humidity and the reduce visibility in the air but for the average person it was just a basic typical very hot a clear summer day so I was planning on flying to Martha's vineyard that evening and I actually flu previously that day earlier earlier about one or two in the afternoon just a local flay and was planning on making the trip to Martha's vineyard that night I was checking my weather. You know observing conditions nations at the airport observing everything going on the airport and I decided not to fly based on a number of factors part of those factors where the weather conditions and the lower visibility the humidity and what I feared would be a low cloud deck and M. Fog Rolling in and in the Martha's Vineyard area later that night so I pretty much scrubbed my plans. I would say about five or six that evening John had originally planned planned to fly no later than six. PM meaning visibility would have been ideal until he landed. Martha's Vineyard. Although he had experienced flying under visual flight rules he was not qualified to fly under. What's called instrument flight rules? I if which is when visibility is so poor. Oh you rely solely on your instruments for that. He needed an instructor beside him yet amazingly. He declined one. Electing to fly solo solo the weather was probably fifty fifty. You know in in my weighing whether to go or not but I was. I was very concerned turn with the deteriorating weather conditions I was making the visibility out to be maybe about four miles so under visual flight rules You need at least three reminds so this was what is known as marginal conditions were. You're kind of teetering on the edge of via Foreign Afar. But I knew as the night you know went on especially especially in the in the coastal region islands that most likely fog will develop. Because you're over. Water and fog rolls very easily. John was running late and night was creeping so what happened. He arrived at the airport. I WANNA say approximately early eight. PM with his sister-in-law Lauren then his wife sheer arrived shortly after in a Black Lincoln towncar. I saw them when they Araya chatting on the side of the hangar. kind of away from Lauren they kind of looked like they were having somewhat of a serious discussion. I mean it wasn't when I say say someone of a serious. I mean there was no laughing or anything like that. You know that could imagine maybe somebody was complaining about being late or maybe somebody was debating what to do. I don't know but there was a little bit of a discussion between the two of them but everything else seem pretty much normal. Well I saw them get into the airplane the three you have them Lauren Caroline JFK junior. And I think it was at at different times. It wasn't precisely into say minute but eventually they all got on the airplane so I saw the plane take off after seeing them board an and I obviously knew could use playing so I kind of just I saw texts way. I'm like let me just washy take off. I saw take off and then you made the right turn towards easterly towards the coastline of you know Westchester and Long Island. It just went went through my mind that you know I kind of thought to myself then and I said to my family later. I said you know. I hope he had instructor on the airplane with them. Because of the conditions and next time on fight to avoid John F. Kennedy Junior case solved now the times where he really went sour on the Paparazzi of course when he was married to caroline but they were fighting all the time and they thought in public breeze and specimens themselves just because when they were in public that they wouldn't hesitate to have these screaming matches and that obviously it was a a photo.
