Call of Duty League and Overwatch League Will Allow Liquor Sponsors
"Of duty. League and overwatch. league loosened sponsorship restrictions will allow betting and liquor sponsors now. I don't remember if the article mentions this but activision blizzard especially has been very careful about the sponsors. They bring into both franchise leagues up until now they had rejected anything. That was even remotely like twenty one plus and so This is a big course change for them. And i'm curious what you guys think in terms of the why and what do you think the implications might be here. Okay so i actually I had you guys a different uncle this week. And i'm not sure if you've got a chance to read it. But essentially the article was about how sponsors were pulling back over the sponsorships and looking at streamers instead So let me look up the actual article. But i thought that and i knew you guys working. Read it because it's called gaming influencers future. These aren't there was actual stories in here Houston outlaws player. Who actually quit. Went to tweeden like needlework. Money that of the united talent agency said streaming the way for companies to make money off of e sports athletes There is a looking now How are you tying this back to different. Yeah no i'm saying that like you're seeing streamers and other people's specifically leaving overwatch lee to go seek other making opportunities so adding in sponsorships or things like liquor and betting that might actually be attractive to younger audience or way to engaging gradients seems like owning these sponsors will bring a younger audience to their franchise. Yup yeah

"Yeah and i think it's deserving. I love the risen bed in santa metal. And i'm still waiting to see the father like you but i i just watched on the middle to actually. That movie was like like heartbreaking. How good was really good. Pro anand's but i put chadwick. Boseman performed right up there. So it's not like it was. I don't think it was just a pity thing at all. He definitely deserves it and close. Our winning best director for nomad land was nice to see when surprised at one. Best drama. Because i think we talked about it last podcast i i enjoyed. The movie was nowhere near my favorite. But i think the way. It was directed very very well. So she's definitely deserving for that. When i was a little surprise one. Best pitcher yes. She's been winnings. So many goddamn awards. I think she's setting the record for most for director most awards throughout award season. She's the first female director to win it since nineteen eighty four which end unbelievable. I mean it's not even that. Where are the female filmmakers mart. They being acknowledged because you would think throughout that time span. There'd be a couple more winners but yeah now she's definitely the favourite going into the oscars. So i i've never been more sure about a winner i think than chloe's how because it's just everyone just giving it to our everyone. Yeah i don't think win best picture but it's probably the favor right now noman land. That would be cool and little. I mean they recent years they have in really but for a time it was guaranteed best director. Best pitcher like they always shared the award so we will have a return to that. Did we get that last year. Parasite and yeah. Yeah we did actually My on let's talk about that. Let's talk about last year's off parasite what a sweep and then borat one comedy or musical stupidest shit. Krieger nights tv. Show the at so confusing shits creek one best. That's comedy musical movie. Oh shits creek. Well does comedy series. I know the crown won a lot as well. Yeah the crown Some best actor winners there. I need to watch the crown man. Did your arnold. Didn't bronx mur anything no. He didn't watch it. The big surprise carey mulligan. Not winning a lot of people were pulling for her people. Promising woman was a contender for to win the best picture as well but still gonna watch soul wanting right. Yes all won. Best animated feature and minority won best foreign language film so stupid so i think the majority of the movies in english like it's funny. It was like minority show so it was like whatever movie like french and it was like minority. Usa usa made by americans. Are we talking about with the superman topic that americans just because it's it's about korean immigrants that has to be in the foreign language category. I mean the outrage about that was already there months ago but still so stupid. But it's cool that they want. Hopefully they're nominated for the big award when it comes down to oscar season. But i mean like i said didn't really watch looking through all the winners year. Congratulations rosamund pike on. Yeah he since. The dake is for ted lasso here. That's actually very funny. Crown big winner for winning over hamilton soft ridiculous hamilton. I love hamilton salt. Live if you didn't know but it's got nominated on broadway if you paid all that money for us if we can see on tv. I didn't pay for it and it was in chicago all right. So that is the golden globes and they'll be back next year unfortunately and the next big award season show is the oscars. Right coming up won't be watching that either. Okay let's move on to zack snyder. Dammit you're talking about the justice league again and apparently. He claims that the snyder cut is going to end on a massive cliffhanger and there are no plans for any sequels unless. Hbo wants to make them. So i guess it comes down to the fans right if we want. They'll make it right yet. This movie is just an absolute killing. I mean it's not going to be. I was thinking you easier words for this are you. Are you going into an open. Mind going with open minds. Why do you keep asking me. This is i. Want to keep your. I wanna keep you honest. I'm telling you. I will judge the movie fairly right. I don't believe him. I go into every movie judging fairly. I don't want to trust me. Do you think. I wanna sit through a four hour bad moving. Though like i'm saying that it's okay. Like i hope this was worth it worth all the talk while the hype remaking making it. This is like kwame brown coming in twenty one seven. Okay kwami we saw the potential for game. You still suck the thank you. This is day night game february. This is surprise large actually because it is justly it was always a part one right. No it's not a surprise. Yeah apparently poetry supposed to take place in this nightmare world. All right this is why get so frustrated with this guy. If you know you have one last opportunity here. Wrap it up but percent for yourself to make an entirely different movie. Isn't that what he's doing. Yeah but he literally weren't their reports that ninety percent of it has just been shot over the last year. Yeah but i don't know this is not a surprise. I had four hours. It's not going to be in excess. Obviously not going to be the main villain. But they're gonna tease him. So that's obviously teasing sequel. If saying what. I just said it was making me really regretting while like watching this movie. Now this is going to be like the extended cut would movies where you see scenes that were cut because they just make no sense just thrown in the. I mean the pacing for his for. His movies is always major problem. I can't imagine how many times we're going to be taken out of this. But just some fucking random seen that comes out of nowhere. The blooper reel inner. Better animated sequel. I don't hate that idea. I don't know if he would wanna do that. But i don't hate that idea at all do it. For cheaper you can finish. His story could see opportunity. You can be cool to see these actors. Drawn as cartoons. What type of artists can could think something. Can they somehow get pulled into anonymity universe somehow and i do like star wars. Where rebels is canon. But his animated. Okay something like that. Doors not connected what what is it is connected as a new way to tell it. We kind of knew this was gonna come because it's his way to say. Hey you wanna keep going. I know we're we're here so it's worse. Yeah we're asking them. We'll get some some ice cream cones come together. Mata yeah Well there's also news that mirrors gonna get re casted for aquaman to amber heard. Everyone i million. Clark looks like more wishful thinking. The rumors haven't been coming from anywhere major. Just see it trending on twitter. Right and that amelia clark fan art has been there forever. So that's been surfacing on the web. I wouldn't hate that. I mean once again. That's another situation amber heard and johnny depp wear. I don't know. I don't know what to make conflicting reports from both sides. Yeah you get in just sounds like hollywood wacky nece. That i could care less about that. Too fucking wacky. Hollywood people doing wacky things so each other. I love johnny depp. Though man i still maintain those pirates movies are good. They are the good trilogy..

"Truest larger than life but completely relatable grounded moments And you know when we got to shoot in force awakens harrison and chewy coming into the falcon and saying you know we're home because there was something so crazy about it and i feel super lucky to have been part of that i i had tears in my eyes when hot and schumer had their reunion. It just felt like we just couldn't wait to show it to people because it just felt like oh my god you should see this. It's so cool. Having them back on the ship there was a beautiful moment At love to talk to you about as a red sox fan. The red sox versus yankees. You have this great chapter about just how far fans of these teams are willing to go to torture the the opposing team. And what you tried. What didn't work and then what finally seem to break the ice Of having them sort of find the humanity in each other so my question to you is. What was what what surprised you in your attempts to build those bridges between those two fan bases and what were your findings. in in summary. I'm so glad that resonated. I was i was when thinking about the prejudice that so many people holed toward other groups. I was looking for a context where we could study it where the actual stakes are minimal. But the emotional stakes feel very high and sports fan. Allegiances it just. It felt like the perfect place to go. I mean a few years ago. I got to know an amazing woman in her seventies who helps holocaust survivors and one day. She mentioned that she went to ohio. State and my first reaction was. Yuck yeah. I'm a michigan wolverine. We're rivals who cares where she went to school. Half a century ago it just bothered me to fundamental level. And so i decided you know like any self respecting social scientist. I should study that. And so tim kendra. In iran and all these experiments with yankees red sox fans which was such an easy rivalry to choose. And i think my my biggest surprise was that two of the the steps that were supposed to work based on all the existing science. Didn't one of those was was just creating a common identity baseball fans and people say yeah you know i would help a a yankees fan if they were in an emergency but otherwise you know. They're rooting for an evil team. So no thank you. And then the the other one was to try to humanize the individual fan where basically what happened was people said all right. You know what. There's this one yankees fan who's okay but he's not like the other ones and i still hate all the rest of them so what what ultimately ended up working in in a way that i i was i was surprised by the power of it actually was saying look you know. May maybe we just need to get people to rethink how they became fans in the first place. So imagine jay. If you had grown up in new york would you possibly root for the now. You've probably for the mets. But the point is you might not be a red sox fan. I'm not crazy exactly. I'm joking i'm joking. My mets fans friends joke. I don't know if you are but going. I'm just anyway i keep going please..

"Mean writers rooms won't always be physical even after the pandemic they definitely will but i think the that someone can now be part of it who might not be in town like. I think that the norm will. It's always gonna be better to be together but there's something great about the focus and the you know the access that you have from anywhere so i just think that that's something that clearly there will be infinitely fewer Business trips to have meetings. That could now clearly be done on. Zoom will people go back to it. You know the way we were before more than not. I believe they will but This is now accelerated the evidence that this is a valid and really productive way to work. I've never said those words. I never said this before. We're not gonna hold you accountable. Thank you next question From one position to how does all the time you spent learning magic tricks and performing them affect your job has it spilled over into your work life in anyway. I think the thing about magic as much as some might see it as the geeky sort of you know silliest thing to me. It's incredibly powerful. We had a magician in our office. This is like two years ago and he was in my office just the two of us and he did a few tricks and he did one that literally made me as a fifty year old man think to myself in my head he might be magical like i know how magic tricks are done. I know how a lot of i know. Bunch of gimmicks. I know bunch of tricks. He did something where i was like. I wonder if he's maybe magical does he. And my whole point is the fact that someone who's a half a century old can still have a moment of thinking. There might be powers beyond that which i know is so profound and the the while and the gasping in the amazement any audience has big or small. It's there's something about the the sense of possibility that the world is more than it seems and that we want to see things that we can't imagine and that we don't expect. And so. I i feel like that is a natural aspect to telling a story and i just think that whether it's writing a book or making a show or a movie It's all a bit of a magic trick. You are so much more comfortable not knowing than i am. I immediately answer. I have to figure out the secret but then you can never see the trick again. You can admire the the skills and the the genius of the performer. Who executed it right. Yes okay next. A favorite character from the office. I have to be michael scott. Not because it just because i think he is the hub of the wheel and so everyone is kind of. It feels like they're all kind of his orbit to mix metaphors so interesting he wasn't even in my top five. I love that. And then can i ask you the same question about star wars. I think my favorite my favorite character in in star wars was haunt. Just because i mean it's very hard to think of a better seen a movie ever then when you meet han solo and an empire strikes back. I mean he..

"In and out and then back in again but that idea was something that that felt like it was sitting there setup in the prequels and when we were looking at the story the the idea of a character who is desperate to find immortality and it felt like it was sitting there and that it was a setup potential setup And i kept imagining it as something that could work. You know if. I'm a kid watching all nine movies years from now it felt like something. That was a possible setup to be examined later. I will say that. It's something that i i loved. The possibility of it. And the promise of it and it was one of you know so many things that we were rethinking and trying to find ways to sort of fit the pieces of the puzzle together. And i know that for some people it they clicked in and it worked and was fun and surprising and for other people it was. You know understandably infuriating and sacrilege and stupid and wrong. The reactions were vast but it was also something that was You know in various moments like it was the right move. I imagine that happens a lot too. That you you you rethink a classic world or story whether it's star wars or star trek or even characters that we've fallen in love with right. I still feel like with lost in particular. I still feel like you know sawyer and saieed. Kate and some of the others are long. Lost friends cow often. Do you rethink the stories. You've told versus once you put it out into the world. You're you're happy with the creative. You've made regardless of the feedback. Well all i see when i work on. Something is the thing that we could have and should have done to make this better or that different than the rethinking doesn't because it's it's out there. And i do think that one of the enemies of certainly movies and and in some cases. Tv is the sort of the announced release date where the time that one normally should have to rethink doesn't exist. And it's very difficult to be in a healthy way rethinking when you are under the gun. Impractical material and often very expensive ways for example when damon and i started working on lost. It was a very particular crazy. Ticking clock where the head of abc at the time lebron wanted a show about people who have a plane crash and so in damon i who had never met..

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Recap (Spoilers)
"Just want to put my cards on the table. Right at the front rise of Skywalker is not a great movie. Okay it is not even really a good movie. It's all right movie. Get what happens in less which left a lot of people who are fans a star Star. Wars really annoyed his. They decided to clean up the mess and cleaning up the mess leads to a really really jam packed movie. That doesn't have any room to breathe. It takes a lot of weeks that I don't know where the puck thing force. Helium Lean. How how did you see? She's deflecting line. Lean only Mason Nokia. Whatever anyway it takes leaves is trying to say and I think it's not a good movie however compared to the last Jedi it is like Shakespeare because the last Jedi for like five minutes here getting the this shit the way because this is what this is initiated us to talk about this in the first place? Wow you feel or personal. Do you feel like the last night is a good movie or do you feel like it's just the best of the three. I think I would qualify it as a good movie. Yeah I enjoyed it. I don't understand that. The side is objectively a bad movie. The choices it makes and the things that ask us to do with the characters that we've long loved it just but uh-huh Here's the thing I didn't feel like we need to really have a discussion about that. I feel like what we can agree on is the Disney. Didn't have a plan. They bought a four billion dollar franchise and and decided to make a trilogy which I guess they did that. Just because that's like the cool thing to do like they did trilogies. Let's do one now. But they didn't have a frigging plan. And like I know people have problems with the prequels but as I said so if you bought online at least the prequels had a plant it had a line of thought it had lower like the writing was terrible. Oh and I felt like the execution was pretty bad and somebody effects weren't great but at least I believe that the screenwriters and the producer and the director like had a vision of what they wanted to show us like growing up and then he kills the people killed his mom and then he becomes dark and we saw how that happened. I couldn't even tell you what the last three movies were about like. I guess they were about this girl named Ray who was the daughter. Granddaughter Powell Patine which how did that happen did he get busy. I don't know but like I just like why. Here's the thing. Why do I care about these people? At least I cared about Anna. Can I cared about luke doc I cared about layoffs on never gave a shit about ray fin and I never cared about any of these people. Why did they did they show them my TV? So my movie screen and I'm like why are you here. Why are you bothering me? So that's where I'm coming from. I here's the thing that the rise of Skywalker can be accused of anything and one of them is having a lot of fan service in it but considering that the last Jedi I had virtually no fan service in it I feel like the rise of Skywalker can be excused for like letting fans is literally get wet with themselves with everything. They've got nights of rain on my God. Oh my God lake For Stanley all my God like real Landau Landau like. It does so much that we wanted to see. We hope to see in like this entire trilogy. It was just like shoves them all into one movie. And there's no time to breathe and you're like how the hell do that happened. BALCON game bag. I guess I guess he's back like like he cloned himself just sorcery. Oh again like they did. They don't even explain it. They don't even get a hand. Wait to your and it's just like it happens deal with it and then so we can talk about the movie. Now go ahead. I know you agree with me. They showed about a pre compliant. Yes I completely agree that I mean I I definitely I I will agree with you. I thought the Prequel trilogy was the better trilogy. And it's not even close not even close so thank. God Oh my God okay okay literally. You're not totally malfunctioning. Okay well I also say that as somebody that probably enjoyed the prequel trilogy Morrison focused because I actually think. It's pretty underrated I think that I think George. Lucas is really good at world building and he has a lot of interesting ideas and I know this is a fairly common opinion but he just needs to be. I think edited a little bit helped along with some dialogue choices and so on But I would much prefer stilted dialogue weird performances and silly CGI then like a bland flat world that that doesn't really go anywhere and a story. That is not really a cohesive because that's what star wars to to me at least is it's fantastic and like yes. The new trilogy is much prettier and the performances are better and the dialogue is beer but lots of movies can do that. You know what I mean. The imagination being imaginative. That's would star wars was to me. It's it's really like was when I was a kid like opened my mind to like all of these new crazy worlds and aliens and fun fantasy like things and that's what I liked about it so personally for me. I enjoyed the prequel trilogy much more than and I personally will say well. They didn't know that was going to be Luke's Luke's father in the empire strikes back. They just thought of that along the way so it wasn't like they had a plan back then but they had lucas as somebody who has an over arching figure who was in charge of Star Wars. Here what do you have. Kathleen Kennedy. I guess who just doesn't care really. What way director takes again? I feel like the ends of the three is the best one we because when I saw the force awakens yes it is basically a reprise of new hope fine but like it helped me and I was like excited for where we could go. Oh my God like seriously this is serious. Part of Brent. I'M NOT CLASSIC J.J. Abrams is that he's he's good at starting things. Yes exactly and I'm like Oh my God like who smoke in like what's his backstory and the Knights of ran and how Kylo fall to the dark side. Who's this ray girl and she can do everything? I'm sure there are going to explain that. Not
A Review of "The Rise of Skywalker"
"Welcome to the twenty minute movie review. Today's movie is the rise of skywalker in movie directed by J.J. Abrams starring Adam driver Daisy Ridley and company with a run time of about two hours and sixteen minutes. This review is certainly a very emotional one for me This is a movie. I've been waiting for for some time. It's the final chapter in the skywalker. Saga which spans over forty plus years. You know. I remember going to see my first when I was about six or seven. So you can kind of calculate how old I am from that But I gotta say without sounding cornball or cheesy. This is a very tough goodbye. There's a lot of things I'm GONNA touch on. I'm trying my best to keep Leonard Twenty minutes. This is the only one I have a lot of trouble with because I have so many thoughts We saw the movie on Thursday night a day before it opens up nationally. And and I have my awesome star. Wars Park on I have my beautiful Star Wars crocs. Yes I said that correctly star wars crocs Fox they are phenomenal but it was a Thursday showing nine fifty match three. By the way. If you haven't seen a movie that way okay. I cannot recommend that enough I max an three d together are just. It's a whole different ballgame. It's it's amazing but it's so refreshing to kind of look around around and see all these passionate star wars fans just here for that last chapter to here to say goodbye it. I'm not saying it didn't feel like a funeral. Oh it felt more like a thank you and thanks for everything. Thanks for the memories. That's the way I certainly felt and I could tell other people kind of had that same mentality -ality except for the kids sitting behind me. You know drinking talking sporadically throughout the movie. Please and I've said this a lot if you go to the movies and you feel like you're one of those people that can't shut their mouths. You can't stay off your cell phone please. Just don't go stay home like this. Movie is one that people the winning for for years and years and years and you know these kids innocent enough. We've all been there but kind god'll just stay home. I mean I'm tickets are not cheap to begin with and to. There's so many people there because they there to say goodbye to this the skywalker Guy Walker. Saga they're there to say goodbye to this franchise. It's been their life. I mentioned my case forty plus years for so many years and for someone to think think they can destroy that and take that apart that bothers me. There was a few other issues in the theater. Not near me. It's like a re stuff online about people being on their cell L. Phone and of course there's absolute eight holes that on facebook wherever that loved to ruin movies and post spoilers and it's just I don't okay people like there's people that just seemingly loved destroying your joy that extends outside of movies as well and it's like you know go f yourself like you're not here I mean it's just it's a very sick mentality to have it really truly is and long story short they completely destroy the movie for us. I I you know you'll hear from I review what I think of the movie but I don't know I'll never understand people that go to theaters and maybe it's subconsciously so you don't realize they're absolutely destroying movie even when you're like innocently talking to somebody next to you. You know many times older people do this. And not realize they're talking out loud like for me the cinemas Mike Cathedral the church is Mike. If you dress where I go to just you know just just key decompress. It's a place of passion for me. It's a place of solitude for me I love it and for people to go there and kind of ruin that I have so many problems with but let's move on with the good stuff. Okay so the rise of skywalker emission as almost a two and two hour and twenty minute runtime and it did feel like Our saying goodbye to a friend and I don't know the movie looks phenomenal the movie itself when you sit there the movie just POPs off the screen it this so good so well put together from that point of view from just popping off the screen the way it looks it's Jj that's such a great job with that I I gotTa tell you what I loved about them. If you're right so that was one I love you. And you'll see that the force kinda takes a new level right. The powers displayed by those who have the force in this movie. Rise to a new level in that was awesome so awesome. I love the fact that the gang was all back together. That made me feel so happy to finally after all these movies. You See Paul and thin and you know ray together. It was really great C. Three Po rt to they're all Carrie Fisher to some degree to it so to see them together. And that's rewarding in itself you. You know there's some other things The Sixth Planet I thought was kind of cool. Little thing there. You'll see that when you guys go to the theater not again none of these. I don't think our spoilers or take away from the movie. Palpitation is really really scary. Gary and again you see him in the trailer. So it's not really a spoiler but Palpa Emperor Pal Patine went from a guy who is just flat out evil to now. He's it's just pretty much like the devil and I love how they did that. It was a so creative so wonderful so kind of original the way they did that. People like world. We need palpitation back in the movie. You could debate that. I love the way they did. It I thought I was worried coming into it saying. Why are they recycling? Emperor Powell between but such a great job in how they did it I WANNA say and I know people say this all the time when a great performance on three and like Oh that person she wouldn't award or that person should it'd be nominated that being said me being a hypocrite. Just now I'm GonNa tell you Adam driver in daisy Ridley both serve some type of recognition for this and I'm not talking about people saying how great I'm saying Academy Award Nomination Good. They are so good in this movie. I was not expecting it. I know they're both phenomenal actors actors. I was not expecting what I saw today. And I compare this to the last movie. I reviewed the Irishman. I know it's a completely different type of movie movie but acting is acting in these two. Were beyond any acting. I saw in the Irishman. Adam driver has taken it to another level level. He is just you know he is solid a-list at this point but his ability is is scary. Good I didn't realize he was this good. And boy support around display and boy. When you see it you will be absolutely rewarded for going to this movie? Just based on his acting alone. I love light speed skipping get being negative show a little bit of light speed skipping that is worth it so for all the reasons I just mentioned. It's one hundred percents worth seeing. And you have the phenomenal John Williams Liam soundtrack who has left us. You know we'll get Indiana Jones Star Wars. John Williams has done so much for us as a composer. You're glad it's almost like expect greatness. And he delivers every time. It's obviously his last movie. I'm doing a score for Star Wars and I love how they ended with John Williams composer her score. I love that he was so good and he has a and I noticed it because I listen to music. He has a brief cameo in the film. which is Kinda cool as bartender so beyond offer that that is John Williams? We'll notice that I noticed it because I'm a nerd It it was. It was a really kind of cool a little cameo but the music is just so good the movie itself up to this point. I can't recommend it enough. Go see it. It's just so oh good and if you if you're like me if you've grown up with this you have a legitimate passion. You have a legitimate love for this franchise absolutely to go see it because what I've listed in the first ten minutes of this review is enough to warrant you going to see this.
As the Skywalker saga wraps up, what's next for Star Wars?
"I'm Matt Bellamy Filling in for Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me. Is Lucas shot of Bloomberg and Lucas. I want to talk a little bit about Star Wars here because we've got the final installment of these so-called Skywalker Saga heading into theaters this weekend. The rise of skywalker and it's an interesting interesting test case here because it's going to do huge box office the you know. The predictions are between one. Seventy five and two hundred million but this this one is kind of getting pummeled by the critics. And they're focusing on this issue of Fan Service and the safe route and basically basically highlighting the fact that star wars is not really a movie. It's just a franchise that needs to check box. In order to perpetuate wait itself and I saw the film and I kind of agree. I feel like there's no way to win with these with the star wars franchise right now because you. You have these diehard fans who have certain expectations for the movie and if you try to satisfy them you're probably going to alienate the mass moviegoing audience and and it's also a reflection of Disney owning. Where they just you know. They want the franchise to make a lot of money. Yes they wanted to be creatively successful and all that. But the goal is to justify why they spent four billion dollars on Lucas film They've done that. It is probably the most over analyzed hit movie franchise where every movie makes more than a billion billion five but creatively and it has left a lot of people asking for more And they've tended to just sort of retail the stories stories from the original movies. And that's also what you're GONNA get. Frankly when you put a guy like J.J. Abrams in charge of the franchise. He's not somebody known for coming up with them whole new world he's been a very capable steward of existing intellectual property for ten fifteen years though right and they hired him to direct force awakens. which in two thousand fifteen relaunched the franchise? Chai's and was considered a big success. They then went in a bit of a divergent. Way For the last Jedi which came out two years ago and was is a critical hit but some of the hardcore star wars fan boys did not like some of the creative choices and said that you know it was taking the franchise in a different direction and it obviously made a ton of money but then they bring back J.J. Abrams for this new installment and it is back to the same old. You know hitting all the notes oats remaking the third movie of the of the Star Wars Franchise Return of the Jedi in a new and modern form and the point. Here just seems to be to wrap it all all up. Hit all the notes. And then they're going to figure out what star wars means for movies in the future because they have this very successful show on Disney plus the first TV. TV Show in the Star Wars Live Action Universe the mandatory and that is doing well and people seem to like but these three stores movies have not set up the franchise which is for the future and the question they have now is what is star wars moving forward. Yeah I expect that they'll take some time off and figure you're out of a full plan kind of Disney has done with with the marvel movies where you know five ten fifteen years into the future. These are going to be the movies. These are GonNa be the T. the TV shows. And I assume or at least I hope that both die hard star wars fans and the general public would be happy to see them. Take some risks and do I mean not that the mandatory in is a huge risk but they took characters and worlds that had been unexplored and really blew them up and that gives you a lot more room for creativity than trying to bring back Luke Skywalker and Laya or Taliban solo origin stories. Although the original characters people have firm ideas of who they are and if you try to keep reinventing that that becomes dangerous whereas we're Marvel's had a lot of success is taking the characters that were not as well known blowing them up in contrast contrast with DC which is definitely had a hard time making everybody. Happy with Superman and Batman and those that are really well known we will see a post Skywalker Star Wars. Thank thank you.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Review
"Star Wars the rise of sky Walker opens in theaters tomorrow the third and final film in the latest Star Wars trilogy the end of the road in so many ways for Star Wars especially for this storyline involving Luke Skywalker which all started with the first Star Wars movie back in nineteen seventy seven which I guess in terms of the Star Wars story is actually the fourth chapter and if you find that a little bit confusing you probably still have absorb some of the famous lines from the movies like use the force or do or do not there is no try or Luke I am your father which I know I know the line is actually no I am your father you can tell I'm sort of like walking a tight rope today because I feel like I have two of the greatest Star Wars fans in front of me right now but outside of that JJ Abrams is the director of the rise of sky Walker and just imagine that kind of pressure he's got the tough job of bringing it all in for a landing as I mentioned chasing Garber and Kathleen Newman remaining they went to a special preview screening of Star Wars yesterday before virtually anybody else they're here live in the studio dying to tell you all about it hello my friends Hey how's it going I feel like I said I don't have any good Star Wars greetings is there a good star was greeting hi yeah Jason is wearing a full tee shirts and has the charger beings Baba bobble head well the characters where's your yak give anything Kathleen you know and it's all in my heart something deep down yeah the forces in me so let's talk about this you get a chance to go to the press screening for the new Star Wars yesterday you guys go to these things all the time dozens even a week Jason where even the jaded film critics of Toronto a little bit excited to see Star Wars I mean look everybody's little **** it only comes of this but I think this is actually pretty good to go into this film with a certain level of trepidation I think that if we go in sort of too excited him to sort of objectivity we should be open to its terms I think that a lot of the film critics don't Nestle do that all the time but I think that most people when I'm with the appropriate level of a mix of objectivity in slate excitement of their there for an event Kevin were you excited I was very excited I got there a little bit later than Jason and I felt a little bit of the excitement but once the movie started it was dead silent like this is not a spoiler but when Landau courtesy and gets on screen for the first time Billy Dee Williams I lost my mind and everyone else is like silent which is what it's about which is a huge advantage I mean that like obviously leasing again with public and this is very much I mean it's like man to man the phones at Taft if you see them press for him to kind of a miserable experience you just have to get used to that but a film like this if you're ever going to see this movie theater on the big screen the because you can with an audience to get in the indictment so let's do it I can tell you I can hear you yelling your radio right now Jason I'll start with you Star Wars the rise of sky Walker how was fine suddenly I called the crime you went on Twitter for those over and it look let's let's be one hundred percent clear this is kind of the second and a half ending we've had we had returned the jet I which ended everything and we had episode three which was supposed to end everything Lucas's and then kind of the last job I had a great ending it's like the work done that of those you should go see it I'm not going to worry about it was the last movie that the the universe was going to be bigger and that we weren't going to be focused on the small story and then within us there was the whole notion that the myth of Scott Walker would continue as you see the kids playing with action figure and the kid who picks up the broom with a force you realize that this is not something that's patcher or matrilineal that is going to be bigger than this one little family we did have a question that comes by way remember these characters you really left we're gonna bring those back and focus entirely on that I'll make the story in some ways smaller so it's galactic in scope and yet smaller narrative scope and that is it's doing what it's supposed to do he was hired to do a job which the cap off this saga and it does it and it's fine but that makes it a little bit less interesting a commitment let's get into that in a second Jason says fine Kathleen I mean I think shockingly Jason I kind of agree here I'm I liked it I was very entertained I had a good time even with the jaded critics who were not like matching my energy level I agree that it's not great there is a fine as to what I do think that there's there's a little bit of like a course correction and that they seem to be doing with the last chat I so yeah he JJ made the world a little smaller and really abandon some of the really interesting stuff that Ryan Johnson had set up in the last chat I which is frustrating and makes it not a great movie I think he was trying to please everybody and trying to please those fans that were so upset at the last I and in doing that the narrative suffered and it's also just trying to be a lot try to be a lot of things to a lot of people and then I think it is in any of those things to anybody for example are two foot to a deep in the weeds and lord knows I cut but the way the blade of grass scene six so when I saw the fact that was not mentioned I'm a little upset and the deal is that let people think that this was structured that they knew exactly we're gonna beat I mean they always talk about Lucas having these twelve movie idea sort of written out for some of these are complete stripped away from looks as vision bat that goes without saying but what happened was JJ wrote the the force awakens as an empty are there was no ending there's going to jail just fantastic to look at openings right everybody knows that what has what he's really good at is setting the stage not traded endings hi everyone also knows self admittedly I mean he got in all those interviews actually talks about how this was going to be real tons of room because then he never was supposed to direct the film right other directions where involved actually like a so the deal is that when he wrote the first film they didn't know where it was going to go and it was one of those hand off it's like I'm going to set up the stage hand it off to you and you're going to finish this the second verse of the song that's what Ryan Johnson does run Johnson took all these ingredients and did something for many of us super interesting in super a complex and did essentially ministry talked about what is it to be found the end of of the force awakens is ray handing a lightsaber Luke Skywalker legally saying let's go and the opening shot of last chat I is illuminated at one yeah the last film the film after that episode eight is Luke Skywalker take fully superimposed over shoulder in other words I've been handing off the story to you and Ryan's first thing he does like let's not worry about this story that's not the interesting thing the interesting thing is getting into the nature the metaphysics of the deeper stuff but the force this film goes okay I can't remember the last thing you said okay we're not going to worry as much about this stuff remember these characters you're like let's get him together with all gonna be the same ship they're all gonna gonna ventures together but I want to point out the Kathy when you say that JJ Abrams who has had the incredibly unenviable task of trying to finish Star Wars trying to and Star Wars I I want to really highlight there that is an unenviable task it's even if you're not great even if you're amazing endings try ending the greatest film franchise in history so how does it do Kathleen as an ending to the Star Wars story that we now I mean I thought it was satisfying it's an it's an ending and it answers a lot of questions and as we know Los fans I feel you like we know that change is not answering questions and doing and ray yam asset is flying in and I think that this is just whether you like this ending and the answers that they give you but they give you answers and they give you a very definitive ending and you know some people already have set hi stag JJ Abrams is over party was trending on Twitter yeah it's I mean no one's gonna be happy about anything but I think that he did a good enough job I was entertained and it is it like a nice wrapped up and is it is no one going to be happy with this look at there's always gonna be people upset about this because we care right through well for lots and lots of reasons to ours is pretty fundamental to popular culture and the people have a vested interest and they have in a typical fan communities not everybody but a very vocal minority believes they have ownership over these characters and when they want things to go at a certain way this feeling as for this film actually goes towards a certain direction of giving them what they want and then they end up not wanting what they will think that they wanted that's one thing but I will say that these two fundamental things about changing his his course one lens flares you dialed the heck down with one foot above is one thing I'm like okay I I love that you love letters was god bless you but there's a big thing is he's a red herring you talk about lost as he's a guy who like put a shark and have a logo on a shark and they only got this has to mean something smoke monster has to mean something that's just his step he's trying to trick you a little bit and this film would be much more interesting of those red herrings were not red herrings but actually things that happened so what happens is he consistently in this film gives you something and it's one of those moments the other two phones have moms like oh my god you can do that all my god you can shoot a laser blast haven't hang in the air that's kind of cool all my god you can take a ship and light speed through another ship I never thought you could do that and this film every moment but there was like oh my god that's don't know let's start back that isn't what you think it was ha ha ha I'd something I went I was gonna say second I was going to say that I thought that was but it was it was actually the opposite of this but it makes me really excited to watch it to figure out what the red hearings are and and or not yeah that's not as well as a good teams but I will say that some of those those on inspiring moments that you felt like we're missing I felt them I felt like I was a kid again watching some of this these action sequences and some of that the lights ever seen her so beautiful and big and yeah will transfer to transport you back to your child because I was going to ask if we what we talked a little bit I should stress to set this up by the way I'm I'm speaking which is a corporate Cathy Newman remaining ever talk about the new Star Wars movie rise of Scott Walker what to do right I think the cast is so strong and I think that Jason alluded to it but putting them together like you've got Oscar Isaac daisy Ridley and John by a guy as fan PO and ray and they're together for most of the film and that is a

"So that's it. That's true but I feel like the story for Ray. You know her connection with Kylo Ren that is really at the at the the heart of the emotional story in this movie and the things that you're talking about are very much things at the movie talks about. Is there a Bible somewhere with George. Lucas left behind by a lot in this. You know they're they're actually everywhere. There was is never a Bible that I saw that from George from the beginning there was never a Bible that we wrote from the beginning. When when when Larry Kasim and I started working on force awakens we had a lot of ideas and things we wanted to do in episode seven in that film? That we just couldn't get you. We couldn't do the Luke training things. There just wasn't time to do all that and so we we knew it would happen. Subsequently the even with George uh-huh showing to all of us that when you have the better idea you change it which he's done again and again in these subsequent releases of the films but like you know return. The jet. I was revenge of the Jedi. I've got the poster jeter. He's like no return now. And I think the lesson of you know you have the idea you think you're going to pursue and then you have a better idea and you go. Well if there's time let's do that so in this story I I always knew we were doing episode seven. There were certain the things that I felt for me. I was never supposed to do this movie. I would need worship. I would need to see at the end of this trilogy. You know at the end of these nine films and Kathy Kennedy called and said come on one of the attractions. Was I get to actually do these things as opposed to you. You just backseat. Yeah I wish I wish you know here you are in this trilogy. Doing the first part and the third part the last part while Ryan Johnson comes in and does the middle part. Yeah and he kills off a few people. It's all the rage smoke. Yeah everybody's got to kill somebody you haven't put your stand gotta go. I mean I don't know you wipe out everybody in Walker. No one survives. It's just you and you come out and say Oh my God I default text Stu Way Christy. Yeah that he would love that. I'm sure they were all but you. Did you feel that you would. Somebody else came in and did that middle second that you had sort of lost the strings of go for for a moment I felt like Oh okay because we had talked about doing episode eight but the truth was I was beginning to direct episode at seven and there was quite a bit to think about and I didn't have the brain power or you know or the approval of my family to commit two-family family through it was just one of those things where you know all around. It was not the right thing to say at the beginning of episode seven. Let's talk about you when I was a kid growing up whenever we would a meal. It'd be lunch my mom would always say it's a for dinner. What are what are we like? We like mom. We're just we just start like dinner like she was always felt like that like I was just starting seven is like oh cathy how do i. And then when Ryan came on and he started writing and I was very interested to see what he was going to do and we sat and had a meeting and he obviously read the Force Awakens script and then I read his script. And what what I loved about it was its subversive nature. I loved it was about shock. It was about surprise is it was about sort of Meta take on the I. There was a it was it was a very different approach than what I would have done. which is one of the reasons reasons why it was fun to read and I was an a a real fan of his director so I just knew he was going to do something extraordinary with it and you know I was immediately like Oh jealous that he was doing the thing because I just felt like? Oh It's so much fun that he gets sort of. Continue the story with with these characters. What I was is ultimately selfish Myopia? My I was. I was thrilled. That nothing was was rendered. undoable from all the things that happened in that movie and in a weird way where the last Jedi ends you know it it it it doesn't. It doesn't fundamentally shift. The Paradigm Paradigms and so I found myself feeling like oh well that story can still happen about my way and then X. number of years later later Kathy called and said do you WanNa come here. It's very difficult in this whole franchise series to claim ownership for George Lucas Lucas. Because he came up with the idea I by the way I would even argue. It's beyond him. I would argue that. That Star Wars is not. It's bigger than all of us. I mean even George who of course was the only one who can really claim ownership like you say but even George in a way I would guess has to admit that this thing star wars is bigger than anyone and any of us and I just think it's it's the fans thing but of course it's you know it's George's creation. Well in Bob I booked. There's that thing. He said he was disappointed. In the force awakens because it was too much like the new hope but to me and I wanna hear what you say about. It's you were introducing introducing a new generation to the old generation. So the connection. There is really strong. Sure that I don't feel the prequels. But here's the thing There are a number of things that we obviously intentionally Did in a kind of history repeats itself mold to say we are introducing reducing this brand new cast of characters this stormtrooper who runs from the first order. This scavenger who is living literally in the the wreckage of the history of the movies that we know this hotshot pilot. We don't know his history but he's joined the resistance to find Laya years later sort of unable to give up the fight because she could smell smoke from miles away whereas Han. You know at this point what. What is he up to the fun of asking where are these existing characters and Dan revisiting some of the themes and in some cases some of the locations From the original story to me was part of doing this thing as a continuing continuing which is to say it's not just about going to new lands meeting new characters. It's about embracing what what's come before. So that the characters that you meet in episode seven Kevin Imagine that Chapter Seven of book. It's not about having entirely brand new rebooted. It's a continuation of the of the one story. So in that way you know and look. Is there a big giant planet. SIZE WEAPON IN IN FORCE AWAKENS. Yes doesn't blow up. It does blow up and so there are AH undeniable parallels but in a way because there had not been a star wars movie in a long time the prequels were the ones that had preceded it I very purposely wanted to sort of revisit. Is it the old in order to start and tell the new and that was the challenge it again for those who hate it. I could not respect your opinion more for those who I love it. I question your sanity but I just so sane years is there but I'm just it felt right to us at the time and As does this one now. Well you just mentioned something and I know I have to let you go soon. But the the idea that there's a history you work with a lot of the same people you work with a lot because you basically have an easy and trust them to do it I i. It's fascinating to me. The Keri Russell also is in this movie Yes. I don't know what she plays names. Laurie Bliss to everything. So yeah so thank you thank you for that. Yeah but I don't need to know anything else now. But except that she was the star. Felicity was which was almost in the beginning. Meaning for you when you were doing TV. Because you've done you know millions of other things including that little thing called lost where we all have questions and we're doing it. Yes but but when you think back to those days where you're doing felicity which is the opposite of all the movies that you do now. Do you ever miss that. The the simplicity very much. It's funny we have the show that we're doing we're producing for apple called little voice. Cerebral and Jessie Nelson are doing and It's a young woman in New York and watching dailies for that show so puts me in the mindset very nostalgically kind of wonderful way of felicity. Because it's a romantic sweet young person show about people in the city and it just is I really. Do you miss that. Because there was something sort of wonderful and safe and the group was so great and I was doing with Matt Reeves when my oldest friends and the whole thing it was just was just was just wonderful but working with carry on this. It's funny there's a scene between her character and character and in this one moment she she says she's got a whole crazy outfit on mask and everything and at one point she looks at him unsure and she just says hey now now every scene infelicity started with like literally. It wasn't like a written rule if you passed like literally turn on any literary three four times per episode but it was just hearing her say. Hey I was like oh my heart because it was exactly if listening thing. She's wonderful all right. People see you look for that. Hey when you go into a good one man. Is there a Kelvin. It's funny you ask Kelvin. Being your grandfather. The grandfather the Kelvin. We mentioned Calvin in episode seven so it felt like a hard thing to do again in this one so we actually didn't overtly mention Calvin in this movie. I'm disappointed I am too. I think it should go up to it just changes we can reach that okay. Well speaking of the Internet we. We're GONNA take a minute to have a couple of questions from them. It'd be really nice. I I'm hoping now that hatred will see your hair okay Jay. Oh Ninety eight is. They're going to be an epic kiss in this movie. It's a great question that is great. Oj Nola. This reminds me the question I got from. General and ninety six one which said is going to be abacus. I will say without saying kind of who it is that you do not leave this movie without experiencing a kiss but that could mean all sorts of things it might be more than what I don't know. I really think you peds training. Let's let's let's see what it is. Okay Eh next one. Oh Oh Zag. Rex Cloud I can't do that. What are your favorite fan theories? What did they came up with that? You actually actually wish he might have done. There was one that said that jar jar binks was Dr Citius. Just I thought I just thought that would be great. Let's just go with that one. Well you know. This is the first time you've been here so I wish he would come all the time. I think it would be great for you to act a year from now we discuss ever says. Let's just do that. I would love to. We're everything spoilers everywhere. Instead of spoiler it'd be my favorite thing to do any of that but we always end in song. Okay you a musician. Well that's mar you wrote themes for all these TV Union. But I'm going to ask you something. Just a personal favorite. Can you harm the original. John William Star Wars themed for US and take us out with that the UH Come on my life has made this is yours..

Snyder cut the Snyder. He should go. Fund me for the Snyder. Yeah seriously at this point he should so many other things we give money to me for one back. Yeah that'd be nice. Yeah certainly a gofundme. These acts nighter now Fund me. Just give me the money. I'll make my own SIRKKA. The Nash cut the national release. Nash cut under the odds. Time movie. The sages you in front of your eyes. What are the odds? That's good what's going on the Snyder cut. Yeah Whoa if it ever happened. This is exactly how go because because this is how every snyder movie goes for since the beginning of time it's GONNA come out it's gonNA fucking suck but it's going to be really big and ambitious and there's going to be like maybe like a part that's really cool because that's what's not as good for he's good for like a part or two and then people are gonna be misunderstood masterpiece and then other people are going to be like this sucks. uh-huh she like you. Just don't get vision most of the time. I'm way more excited for the movies. Working all but net flicks fuck. The Snyder cut the premise of his next movie is like that. Sounds like the perfect type type of movie for this guy you just fifteen thousand subscribers saying do you know the premise of his. Next movie the Zombie Post Apocalyptic Zombie world where a team of mercenaries has to do a heist. So it's not necessarily about them surviving zombies Zombie Heist yet. It's like a Zombie Heist in Vegas. It's like they have to do the highest but there's also zombies there. Oh it sounds ridiculous why do a heist who cares. Maybe they need to find the secret formula to save people because it looks like society still kinda functions to an extent. They should zombies. Yeah there's zombies how they become zombies. Do you know that you know. I don't know that they never got the Snyder. It's all connected. Yes WanNa go on a fan questions yes please. Yeah sure I this question here from Brian Cooper. What's up coop between the three of them? Who Do you think could have direct the best superhero film? Wes Craven Alfred Hitchcock or George a Romero speaking of zombies. I like to see old hitchcock. Give it a try. I think hockey in Superhero Film. Yeah make it a nice thriller Har what kind of Superhero. I'd give them here. I give him superman. I'd given Superman in the problem. What Superman no no but I give them like one of his creepy villains like toy man you know the toy or is it a toy maker? I always forget that guy's name because hitchcock would do that really well. He figured out a way to balance the light because you know he would do that. The movie it starred out. It's all friendly and someone's dead. That'd be funny for Superman you know. That's one of Superman's enemies. He's really creepy though he's like I don't know he's like this really freaky guy. Need US makes toys that are bombs. The Penguin yes no joker the trickster. Read La Ridler Arnold Schwarzenegger. You'd make a good Batman Superman all hold on with Alfred Hitchcock Hitchcock behind the old the old camera. I agree with Aaron all right. This should hear from Tom Demon. Hey guys love the podcast. You guys are so chill. lobue W OLIVER IS MY FAV- to- two questions. What's the origin story behind nerd soup? I've seen some sentence actually lately from Disney plus plus but I haven't seen enough to kind of officially ranked put South Park number one because South Park. I think it's it has a good peak and it's still going strong. Then I put American Dad. Yeah I think America that was more consistent family got hit the best peak. That's just how I'm ranking them. Suck Yeah Family Guy. Like three to seven was amazing. Three three seventeen league is you're not touching then it got really bad at the end currently going yeah. Same thing with Simpson's Simpson's currently is not great. I would do South Park Family Guy American Dad Simpsons the simpsons. I'm going back washing prime sentence. Simpson's it's really funny funny but I still think yeah. I wouldn't put it. I haven't seen enough of it. Remember how bad the Cleveland Show was Cleveland. Shall we put Beavis and butthead into that mix no okay your big show. Excuse me please. Movies unbelievable I feel like you're a king of the hill guy too. Yeah that's Pretty Funny Johny I could dabble target Bara. You ever see the dumper on this question here from Dylan Bride. Oh Oh Dylan or Brindell..

"That's that's coming out in February and they recently announced it will be called R-enfield which is a drag spinoff and there's also Paul Phoenix Dark Army Army. Which is going to feature classic universal monsters and new monsters so all those films sounded like they were standing on their own and I was like all right? This is this is the way the do it. And then the other day the announced this invisible woman movie and I immediately was like are they changing course again and making a connected universe after all but not by all reports even this movie has invisible in the title even though it is a universal movie and even though it will presumably involve in visibility pretty. It's not going to be connected to invisible man at all which I honestly think is like way too confusing for the general public trust. I am but I guess we'll worry about that when we get there but what we do know about this is Elizabeth banks is going to direct and star in the film and the tone of the moving. The plot by the tone of the movie is being described as American psycho meets Thelma and Louise so make of that. What you will there is an original Invisible woman movie from universal was released in the nineteen th it was in nineteen forty and that will be was actually kind of like a screwball comedy about this model who who gets fired and she wants to get revenge on her mean boss. She hooks up with a mad. Scientists in the mad scientist turns her invisible so she can get revenge vange and then gangsters get a really silly but that does not sound like what this movie is going to be. So are you excited about invisible man and then separately. What do you think about invisible woman? Like I know that the I think you're absolutely right about the the confusion on the general audiences part but from a creative standpoint like setting setting aside how audiences may react to this just looking at the the ideas of the movies themselves. Do you think this is a smart approach. I mean I'm a huge fan of universal some authors. I think invisible man looks great. I'm a big Fan of Legal Ana who directed that so. I'm really looking forward to that. I don't know how I feel about this. Yes I I like Elizabeth Banks as an actress. I think she's a really good actress with the right material. However I don't think she's a very good director Lee? She has yet yet to direct something. That's impressed me. I haven't seen Charlie's angels yet but by all accounts. It's not very good. I know you're a big pitch. Perfect what is it to fan. I mean we not really become this huge narrative within our our slack our slash film slack. I just wanted to stick up for that movie when everybody seemed to be crapping on it. I don't I don't think it's bad as it's as bad as everybody thinks it is. That's the extent of my pitch perfect to end up. I don't think is a great director at the same in time. I think it's nice that for once. A female director is being allowed to fail upward because male directors all the time make movies that flop and they still get handed big big movies and we're just talking about no holly the other day. And that's like a perfect a perfect example of that whereas a lotta times when a female email director Karen Kusaba is is a great example of this she. She was this budding indie director. She got handed a big tent pole movie with an flux and and that movie bothering it Sorta like derailed her career for a while and she's only now serve climbed out of that hole where you know so it seems more often than not when a when a female director makes a movie that bombs they put directors jail and so I kind of like that even though Charlie's angels bomb p Hollywood. What is like all right? Make this instead. So that's progress. Yeah exactly county quality okay. Let's talk about the fugitive remake. I feel like this is a bit of Deja Asia because not too long ago on the podcast. We talked about the fugitive. And the idea of a remake and that was because I think quickey the upcoming mobile streaming service that offers quick bites the name Qube is going to be like a doing its own version of the fugitive but Hollywood is apparently not content with one new version of the fugitive. There's another one in the works. Chris yes there is a new fugitive movie in the works from Director Albert Hughes. He's one of the Hughes. Brothers directed menace to society and from Hell and the book of Eli and Albert Uses as as directed a few solo movies too. I think he directed it was called Alpha about a dog or thick but so yeah. He's directing the fugitive remake at wire. Brothers others we don't really know what it's GonNa be. We just know that it's being described as a new spin on the material. And I'm I'm not happy about this because I honestly think doc. The fugitive the Harrison Ford fusion from nineteen. eighty-three is a perfect movie. And I'm not being hyperbolic here. I mean there are many good movies. There are very few perfect movies is I think the the fugitive really is perfect. As is and there's nothing you can do to that movie to improve it but Hollywood. It doesn't care about that so we're getting another one. The fugitive is such like a a sturdy thriller. That's how I would describe it. It's it knows exactly what it's trying to do. And executes huge perfectly on every level. It's it doesn't have a lot of times you can feel movies. Were there reach exceeds their grasp and this is not an example of that. This is an example Blah movie. Just like staying in its lane and just like running the perfect lap in that lane. It's so solid all the way through right and it's it's really the type movie they don't make any more and I just know that this new version is GonNa have some dumb ass like high-concept thing like it's in space or something like because that's the only way you get movies like this made now like it'll be like the fugitive will be like the joker. It's going to have some sort of dumb angle that they have to throw in there because that's the only type away movies like this made me more and I'm not looking forward to that so the ninety three film that we're talking about is based on a TV show from in the nineteen sixties. And when I first heard about this news of this new version this new remake I was like man at least wait. You know the proper proper amount of time and then I was actually thinking about it and I think it was about thirty years from the sixties to the nineties when that happened and I didn't really realize this but by the time this movie comes out it probably will be about thirty years from ninety three until off twenty. Whatever when that actually happens in like that just made me sad because nineteen ninety-three doesn't seem like that long ago to me but I don't know I'm just getting old and losing all sense of time? Okay so let's talk about. Our last is new story. That is that Mark Ruffalo was at Tokyo comecon recently and he talked about how he pitched more hoke movies to Marvel Studios. He said that Kevin feige asked him last week. He had more ideas or stories for the hulk and Ruffalo said Yeah. I think there's still some stories to tell and fight. He basically asked him to come in and explain what those stories would be. And he said we'll see if we can find a place for you in the Marvel Universe so and then also Mark Ruffalo said that he wanted to see like hulk versus Wolverine Movie. So this idea is interesting to me because universal as far as I know still to hold the rights to distribute solo hulk movies so I don't think we're going to be seeing Kevin Feige make some sort of Spiderman. Sony style deal where Marvel Studios has the ability to release a solo hulk film but the idea that he said. We'll see if we can find a place for you in. The Marvel. Universe seems to indicate to me that they they want to keep mark Ruffalo was hulk around but just maybe as a supporting character like how they did and thoroughbred can rock the idea of him fighting against it's wolf rain or whatever like that. That's happened a ton of times in the comics in actually in Wolverines very first appearance on the comics in nineteen seventy four. He fought hulk. So that's that's like a tried and true concept and it makes sense and I think people would lose their minds. Fan Boys and stuff would lose their minds but actually saw that happen but Chris. Do you think think that's a a smart way to introduce the X.. Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is by Wolverine face off against Holkar pipe dream thing. It might work because that's how they brought Spiderman into the marvel cinematic universe by throwing him into civil war so I guess there is some precedent of introducing new characters in other films. So maybe the accu work I just I. I don't I don't know I feel like I feel like there should never be another another wolverine movie just because Logan was such a perfect sendoff for that character but I know again. That's unrealistic fans want more in Hollywood once more we will get one eventually. Yeah I kind of agree with you there. But but in with the inevitable new wolverine who would you actually excited about Werner Herzog as Wolverine. Like all right. I Would Kazakh as the new will be amazing. Do you have any real suggestions like people that you think might actually be chosen that you would be like maybe raise an eyebrow about and and be like Oh man I I guess I could see this. I might be interested in this. I don't know man 'cause like I don't like I. That character is so associated with Hugh Jackman and at this point. It's hard to picture anyone else in that part like I guess I feel like it would have to be sort of like what they did with Jacqueline where he was like relatively unknown when they cast him and he's rea became a star based on that I feel like that's like the best way to go about this character. What if they cast? I don't worry Scott. Now as Wolverine he was the wolverine initially. I'm sure he would be thrilled about that. Because but I don't know how I would feel. I think actually there was some there. Were some rumblings that maybe Tom Hardy would be. I don't know if this was like I don't think this was in any sort of official official capacity but I think people were asking Hugh Jackman like what he would think of Tom Hardy as a successor to that character. What would you make Tom Hardy as well as Wolverine? I'm sure he'd be great eight but Tom. Hardy was already Bain. Now he's venom or really going to get him as lake yet another character. I guess he would do it. He seems like he seems like the type of person who'll it'll be like all right. I'll do that if he did. Venom probably do anything at this point. Yeah all right well. I think that's going to bring us to the end of today's episode slash them daily. I think we're going to have to interview view episodes coming up for you guys for the rest of this week. We're not GONNA do the Mandal Orien- recap that Peter and Brad Bryan young have been doing on Friday. Although I think there is a a new episode of the mandatory and that's coming out that day but my understanding is that they're gonNA wait until next Friday and then maybe talk about both the new episodes so td on on that but in any case you will have more episodes of the show to dropping in your feet for the rest of this week. Chris tell people where they.

"And ten year old daughter to make sure that they're safe but he is caught up in what the the official synopsis refers to as Tweet now confirmed later journalism and it looks to all the world that he was responsible for the bombing and he basically just goes on the run to prove his innocence and find his family and make sure that they're ok well. This legendary cop played by Kiefer. Sutherland is is tracking him down so I mean you know the the premise for the fugitives like the it's. It's undeniably viably compelling right like you've got this man on the run story which automatically you know puts the audience on that character side and you can have as Tommy Lee Jones proved moved in his Oscar winning performance in in the original movie. You can have somebody who really digging and chewing on some scenery and having a lot of fun as the person who is tracking this guy down so conceptually it works I just. I don't know if I'm fully sold on Qube yet. Yeah Kiefer Sutherland was like the perfect guy for this role quimby so it's like a streaming service from Jeffrey Katzenberg and it can be short term content. So what does that mean like. How long are these episodes. Do we know yet I mean in general. They've talked a lot about colby being around the ten minute mark. I think I've seen anywhere from seven to twelve minutes per episode sewed and the thing is they have so much content like equipped. He doesn't even launch until April Sixth of twenty twenty but for the past I don't know six six months or so. They've been signing some of the biggest names in Hollywood to create content for them and it's it's like every single day. There's more more and more stuff and it's becoming harder and harder to just write off as like a joke or or completely ignore it. I think it's something that we're going to have to grapple with because by the time April comes around at this pace like every major director in Hollywood is going to have a project there yeah. I remember when we first brought this up. Chris like just dismissed it outright and always saying how there's the potential here with like short-term content to do like kind of like these cliffhanger kind of like short-form episodes. They like make you want to you. Come back every day to see the next like little five ten minute did of story and when I think of hangers I think Keith or Sutherland and twenty four so no no. I think this is the marriage-made-in-heaven so let's move and talk to you. Talk About Star Wars Jon Favreau who is producing producing the mandatory in and directing at least one episode of season two has expressed interest in making a New Star Wars Holiday Special the Star Wars holiday special of course is one of the most I guess made fun of whole specials in the history of television. Brad is he joking. Rounders is something he's serious about now. He's definitely serious about it. this is John. Apparently has a fondness for the Star Wars holiday special which is among one of the most mocked and even hated pieces of star wars mythology even more than the prequels for those who don't know the Star Wars Holiday special aired in nineteen seventy eight's It's it's intended to be like a Christmas style program that took place in the Star Wars Universe hours after the events of star wars a new hope if followed Han Solo and Chewbacca as they tried to stay away from the empire and make it back to the wookey home world of Cacique in Eh celebrate a holiday called life day which tobacco hope to spend with his father itchy his wife Malla and his son Lumpy lumpy which is another streaming service. That's coming later this year no but yeah so this special has is so oh revealed that George Lucas never wanted it to be available to anybody after it aired it's never been released officially on DVD or streaming or anything like that because it's such a joke but Jonah ever like I said has a finest war and he would like the opportunity to make a New Star Wars holiday special he doesn't give any specifics civics about you know what he would do but when the topic happened to come up he said quote. I Love The Star Wars holiday special certain sequences more than others but I loved the introduction of Boba Fett A- and that rifle that he had that animated piece still holds up. It's pretty cool and I.
Vanity Fair, Annie Liebowitz And Keri discussed on Jason and Alexis
"Vanity Fair? Just dropped. A giant cover story on Star Wars. The rise of Skywalker. Beautiful pictures by Annie liebowitz of the cast, including Cal Ripken. And girl. I was quickly reading stuff through all the commercial breaks. They revealed a lot more than I thought they would reveal Lum. They confirmed that Jj Abrams. Good friend, and miss Felicity herself, Keri, Russell is in this movie. Rumors that she was ended there. She couldn't confirm it. Well, Vanity Fair, confirmed it and even showed her costume. It is a kick costume. She plays hold on a minute. It's a cool name to her costume is awesome. Let's see here there. She is. She plays a bad guy. She is a K. Russell masked scoundrel by the way. That's also what we call dawn masked, scoundrel, Zora, bliss who Zoe bliss and her mask is awesome. I want that mask. They also confirm that Kylo Ren. And Ray may have a deeper connection than has been previously revealed. Oh, which I'm shocked Vanity Fair wrote that hill. Richard E grant, people love him. He is a general. He's a bad guy. And now I'm really going out. And then I'll stop because mytalkers if you're not a nerd, you're like white Don, you'll love this. It is confirmed that the knights of Ren are in this movie there. The thought there, the elite guard that was mentioned in the force awakens. So they're in this to their favor. They've revealed some planets. Yeah. It's it's that's a lot. I'm shocked. And I know you're not a nerdy, rolling your eyes going. I don't understand the big deal. They are usually so secretive, but they gave a lot of details of light, basically what we can expect, and it's a lot, and they show a they even have a picture of the final lightsaber scene between Tyler and Ray it looks like they're in a body of water on crashed there on top of like a tie crashed typhi ter-. Oh, wow. They are showing a lot. They're showing the law, which are are beautiful, and Billy Dee Williams. Looks amazing shot of him in the cockpit of the millennium falcon. Annie liebowitz is so amazing. She's such a good photographer. Yeah. Oh, I'm just beyond
The Rise of Skywalker trailer is out
"There was one big news item from today that he clipped everything else. News item. That was really the only takeaway that you should have had from today's events. And that was the release of the teaser trailer for the new Star Wars movie Star Wars Episode nine which apparently is going to be titled now, the rise of Skywalker, and that title in and of itself is a strong indication of the direction they're going with this film. And I'm encouraged I'm encouraged by what I saw it was very. Cautious going into watching this thing, and we should still be cautious. Because trailers only a trailer. We have no idea what this movie's extra end up being like once it comes out. But you know, just give you a little bit of context. In case. You're you're not a hard core Star Wars fan, which is probably likely for significant portion of this audience. There's a lot of controversy in the nerd universe. Right now, particularly when it comes to Star Wars, and that's because of the the last movie, which was called the last Jedi which detoured significantly from a lot of the established cannon and established rules of the narrative that had been laid down in previous films. And when I I watched the last yet I episode. I was actually okay with it. I actually liked it. My my first viewing when I walked out of the theater. But my opinion changed as I let it breathe a little bit. As the film aged on me, and I became less and less of a fan of it to where. Now, I'm more in the camp of folks who say this movie was a travesty and what informed that judgment for me was less the actual content of the movie itself. Then learning that, you know, my presumption had been that Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy was the president of Lucasfilm, and that they had this story group because they made this big deal when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, they made this huge deal out of how going forward, you know, they basically threw in the trash can all of the non film cannon that had been established books comics video games. What have you up to that point? And said we're starting fresh the only thing that exists in this fictional universe. Are the movies and one of the cartoon shows? And that's it. Everything else is fair game. We're starting fresh new books. New movies, new comics? And in order to keep it all together, we're going to have this editorial story group. This core group of people is going to keep their hand on the helm and steer. The sheep of this franchise going into the future and make sure that everything's interconnected and make sense and has common themes that the stories interweave with one another. And so that you can have this kind of joint experience sort of like, the marvel films, right? The marvel cinematic universe. And so presuming that that was the case I walked out of the last jet. I think in myself man, there's a lot of stuff in that movie that I did not expect. But hey, that's okay. Because presumably based upon the fact that they have a story group. It's all part of the plan. Right. Like, it's all building towards something. It's okay. That they didn't answer a lot of questions that have been raised by the force awakens. It's okay that they didn't explain who this person was who that person's heritage was or what the what the underlying political conflict. Even is why these people are even fighting in the first place, that's fine. Because it'll all be revealed later. It's all part of the plan. But of course, what we learned in the aftermath of the last Jedi. What was revealed much to the shock of many fans, including myself was that there was no plan. They they in fact had not been it wasn't as though Jj Abrams who directed the force awakens. Had handed a roadmap to Ryan Johnson who directed the last Jedi. And that Ryan Johnson built off that road map to create his movie important affect any idea any outline that Jj Abrams had and that the story group, which presumably is nothing apparently destroy group doesn't have any actual thority or oversight whatsoever. What's going on with this franchise? JJ handed his wanting to Ryan Johnson, Ron Johnson threw in the trash can and just did whatever he wanted with. No regard, and you can see this in interviews with him when he talks about his process, and he talks about writing he talks about why he made the choices. He made such as the choice to kill off the big villain the big looming shadowy villain in the background supreme leader. Snow? Just kill them off in the middle of the movie. When you listen to Ron Johnson talk about that. He says, well, you know, it was necessary for Kylo rinse character to come out from under the shadow of his master and become his own his own man, and to develop as a character is the right thing for my movie was the right thing for my story. Well, that's nice. But this isn't your story like this. It's your story in the sense that you're tasked with telling it, but you're coming into a well established narrative the and by the way, there's a movie coming after yours, right? That you have to be somewhat cognizant of being able to actually have a through line narrative that continues for one hall of the movie, and he just didn't care. He did whatever he wanted and worse than that worse than Ryan Johnson doing what he did Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm and the higher ups at Disney, let him do whatever he wanted. This is a stout. Like from a business perspective. Here's your thing. If you're not a Star Wars fan if you don't care about any of this stuff, and I'm talking about right now appreciate it from this angle. Appreciate it from as a business decision. Okay. You're the CEO of Disney. You're the president of Disney entertainment and marketing and Kathleen Kennedy runs one of your film studio divisions, Lucasfilm a hotly new acquired property that you paid. I forget how much they paid for it. But it was hundreds of millions of not billions of I'm sure it was billions of dollars that they paid for it. And you they put out that money with expectation that this is something that they're going to be able to milk forever, right? That there's going to be this, and they had plans from the time that Disney acquired this franchise. And these intellectual properties they started laying out their plans, if we're going to have a movie every year, we're going to have new theme park. We're gonna have tell live action television shows and cartoon shows and video games. And it's going to be this fantastic. New expansion of of merchandise, and storytelling that the fans are gonna love. And we're going to be milking in raking in the the dough for decades upon decades decades. So that was the plan. Well at the fantastic, right? Looks laudable goal from a business perspective. But then what they did was the equivalent of handing the keys to this Ferrari to a teenager and just saying have fun with no direction, no curfew, no guidelines as to whether or not he had a follow any sort of rules, or when when you should be back or where he's even going any knowledge of where he's going any terms on when he should be back. That's the equivalent of what they did with this multibillion dollar franchise that the that the it stood to lose billions of dollars on. So just as a corporate story is a corporate business story. It's extraordinarily fascinating that the m- the modern era of Star Wars under Disney has played out the way that it has. So there's your background. So then this trailers coming out for the ninth one and Disney has been very diplomatic. And protective of Ryan Johnson. And pretended as though everything's fine. Right because they're not going to acknowledge that they've screwed up. They're not gonna acknowledge that they've made mistakes. In the public sphere. But they know right. Like, it's van they're very well aware of the fact that the fan community is divided there. A lot of people who don't like the last Jedi and even more than not liking last Jedi. I they don't like how Disney has handled this property. They don't like the fact that there seems to be far less intention and care going into the making of these films, then has gone into the watching of them, which of course, is a recipe for disaster when you're dealing with genre. Fandom something is big Star Wars. And so going into the release of this teaser trailer today for the ninth and final Skywalker saga film. The expectations. Were you have got to blow people away you have to this has to be this teaser trailer needs to leave everybody wanting more. And if it doesn't then you might as well, just kissed the franchise goodbye. Those were the stakes. It had to be good. It had to be impactful people had it had to leave people excited that mission appears to have been accomplished. And watching this thing as a fan. You know, who's been a fan as long as I've been alive and been capable of comprehending. What I was seeing with Star Wars. It was really nice to see the kind of subtle reassurances that were laid out in this trailer that there was the way it was cut and the texts that they overlaid was Vakhitov of the first trailer for episode one the Phantom Menace that came out in nineteen ninety nine. I believe it was. So they're drawing that connection between. They're basically saying look we recognize this is the we're trying to connect the dots here between where things started. And where things are ending the inclusion of oyster over from Luke, the which was then very shocking reveal at the end of this thing that apparently the emperor the big bad from the first two trilogies is coming back in some way. Now, we don't know what form, but he's going to play a role in this film, which is completely unexpected. And more than makes up for the the loss of snow in the previous film. So now, I'm excited again. And I think a lot of people who were doubtful. About whether or not JJ was going to be able to land this thing Jj Abrams are excited once again about the potential of this movie coming out on Christmas. Now, we may be sitting here. Looking at New Year's twenty twenty and shaking our heads with our face, and our poems and saying well man, why do we let ourselves get excited again? But as of right now, I'm going to allow myself to have a little bit of optimism. So there's my there's my freestyle Friday completely apolitical pop culture commentary for you on Star
Apple streaming platform to make streaming easier
"Apple is going to talk about two or two and a half new products on Monday. So the first is a video service that includes both TV shows and movies that apple itself has been producing creating paying four over the last year or two along with an opportunity to subscribe to other companies video services think about things like HBO, although we don't know HBO is part of this. So again, a video service that has apple stuff and other people's entertainment content. All in one place, the second product, we're going to hear about is a scripture that apple is selling to collection of news, and magazines, including I believe our own Bloomberg BusinessWeek, and the idea is that you pay one monthly price new get access to a collection of subscription news products. Like, the Wall Street Journal and others. And then there's also going to be the two and a half is an apple branded can of coke critic co branded credit card, right? This seems like to me another. Example of apple just dipping its toes into the video entertainment business. Have they said, whether the people always said if you're going to get in get in big because your apple go by big media company or something like that? Have they talked about any type of investment they're willing to make in the video business? Well, look, at least by news reports they're spending a billion or a couple of billion dollars or maybe more on these high powered high profile kind of video entertainment shows that they're bankrolling things from Oprah Winfrey shows from Reese, Witherspoon and Jj Abrams and other prominent Hollywood producer. So that's a not insignificant investment from apple. But you're right. That apple has been talking literally since when Steve Jobs is running the company about reinventing entertainment about doing something that would really change the fundamental nature of how people consume entertainment, particularly on television. And look in that. Eight plus years since apples have been talking about that entertainment has been reinvented an apple has been so far entirely sidelined or almost entirely sidelined in that reinvention. So that brings us to Monday, right? What are you looking for to signify their new video, whatever it is? They unroll and media platform that it will be successful. So there's so many unanswered questions. And I just don't know how big a deal says. So I think much to the surprise of almost anyone who has an iphone. There is already an app on your iphone. Lisa that is called TV are you aware of this and looking right now. Okay. It's bill. My aunt built into every iphone and the idea when apple started this TV app was it was going to be a single place where people could go and watch programming. So look at that. Yeah. I know this is Apple's problem. This is Apple's problem in a nutshell that people do not notice app exists. But the idea then was here's a place where you can watch everything that you subscribe to Hulu and HBO and other things all in the single app without having to go back and forth between all these different services that you may pay for the TV app as Lisa showed. It is not popular. It does not work. Very well. It does not include things like net flicks. So apple is trying to streamline this a little bit by making the TV app. You never have to leave it in theory to watch these programs that apple is gonna make and that its partners are gonna make if you pay
In a commitment to hire more women directors, Universal accepts the 4% challenge
"KCRW sponsors include southwestern law, schools, Biedermann, entertainment and media law institute study, entertainment and get a law degree in two three or four years apply or take the virtual tour S W law dot EDU slash KCRW. I'm Kim masters, and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellamy of the Hollywood reporter, and Matt we know we had that speech about the inclusion writer memorably at the Oscars last year about trying to bring in more diversity more women and the women have really lagged and representation, particularly when it comes to directing movies. So there has been this thing called the four percent challenge, which is not well named because it is it's reflects the number of women who directed top movies in the past several years four percent. But the goal is not to have four percent of movies directed by women. The goal is to get various talents and institutions to commit to having at least one movie directed by a woman in the next eighteen months, and it looks like they are. Making some progress. Yeah. I mean, this doesn't this is not revolutionary. This is not going to change the business overnight, but Universal Pictures sign onto this. And the Walt Disney company CEO Bob Eiger tweeted about this yesterday where he actually said forty percent of our films. This year are directed by or coming from female filmmakers. I don't know that that is necessarily what this initiative is all about I think it's more looking going forward and how studios are going to start hiring with this in mind, but it is putting it on the front burner for a lot of these studios that they're being watched. Yeah. And a lot of talent important producing talent and directing talent and acting talent as are joining in people like Nina Jacobson, whose company produced among many other films. Most recently, I think crazy rich Asians people like her as well as Constance Wu and Carrie, Washington Reese Witherspoon Jj Abrams. These are all people Jordan Peele saying that they will. Will commit to work with a female director in the next eighteen months. And so that adds up the pressure. This is all initiative, I should have said, I guess the beginning from time's up, and and it's something that they are actually doing that could eventually lead to a better break for women. I will also mention that Regina king became the first person to take up that challenge it when she made her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes another thing that might help here is we have seen that the state of Massachusetts in response to our reporting at the Hollywood reporter on alleged abuses on the set of the Showtime series. Smith had been looking to deprive that show of its tax benefit. They get a twenty five percent tax break they shot season two there and they're looking into revoking it because of these alleged abuses. But other states are sort of moving this direction of figuring out. Maybe we shouldn't just give whoever tax credits who are we should put some terms and conditions and one of those terms and conditions looks like it will be bringing more diverse people to make these films. That's an interest. Tactic. Because so many states now do have aggressive tax incentive programs to lure productions to their state. But what they're essentially saying now is we're going to use this money that we're giving out which Hollywood so desperately needs to kind of legislate some changes that Hollywood isn't moving fast enough on its own and that seems appropriate. If you're going to be giving money away, essentially to these companies, you might as well say, hey, how about having a diverse cast and crew how about not having alleged offenses or misconduct on your set? And if you don't adhere to these things you're going to have your money taken away and that is a potent weapon in Hollywood. Thank you. Thank you. That's Melanie editorial director of the Hollywood reporter. He joins me this Monday at two o'clock on the business. I'm Kim masters, and this is the Hollywood breakdown KCRW sponsors.
