"From the mighty shores of Lake. Erie. Are Bengals and Cleveland's browns. Bruise each other for Ohio football. Glory. and Dave, lab throwing. Not Style. Coverage begins tomorrow at three on ESPN fifteen, thirty, the official. My headphones. This is ESPN fifteen thirty. How are you? I am doing right now is I'm tweet about what's ahead in the hour the big show we have today. Bengals and browns. Tomorrow we're GONNA talk extensively about that. The bengals have a chance to do something. That I said, they have to do back in Jane Word starting tomorrow we'll get to that coming up in about fifteen minutes. The big ten's GonNa play football this fall our buddy from fuck nuts dot com covers Ohio state Dave. Bill's going to talk about. What went into the big ten's decision, which was we look really stupid non-playing and. We we need the cash and so Ohio. State's GonNa play football this fall, which is good I'm I'm happy I'm happy for fans of big ten schools happy for fans of the sport. I'm happy for people who care about Ohio state I know I'm a UC fan. There's there are some people who root for the team that I root for that are looking at this from simply standpoint of an and they can't get into college playoff. Let's. Let's have go eleven to know when when the League and then we'll talk about that but. I'm happy. The big ten is doing what they're doing happy for. Fans who like those schools happy for the players. So we'll spend some time talking about that with Dave coming up in about thirty five minutes. Jim Kelly on UC football as the bearcats gets to take on Austin P. on Saturday. Jim Has the game along with Dan Hor Jim, joins us in about one hour. The reds took a step last night and Michael Lorenzen has started games before but here is a team where their biggest strength has been starting pitching and last night I'll attach must win to it. I believe this that these two games against the pirates are must win the to on Monday but last night and tonight I think they've got to win tonight. I not in love with the math if they don't. I am feeling pretty damn good about where they are relative to where they've been if Louis Castio comes up big this evening but can you imagine the pressure that's on the reds to win tonight? Against a Pittsburgh pirates team that is simply dreadful and there's no other way to put it worse record in baseball. Can you imagine the pressure put on the West Castio and the reds tonight? If. They don't win a bullpen night last night and frankly last night was not as much bullpen night as much as it was a really good start by Michael Lorenzen, he goes five pretty pitch efficient doesn't give a walk keeps the ball in the ballpark took advantage of some early runs, which has been great reds been scoring early with a little bit more frequency certainly helps when you have a guy like Shogo who's been doing what he's been doing over the last couple of weeks but the reds a team that has been sort of. Treading water at least because of the strength of its starting pitching. Last night. The bullpen came up and it wasn't just Michael Lorenzen making that start Tj antone quickly becoming a fan of TJ Anto Lucas Sims. was really good last night in a mirror garret. Let's let's face. He was helped out by a great catch by Brian. Goodwin and hey, through a lot of pitches out of the strike zone and he made a lot of is really nervous last night but Amirah comes up big gets US I save saves a stupid stat, but I'll still mention it anyway. And they win a game against Joe Moss Grove in the pirates the frankly I think there had to have I had to have it if for no other reason than think that would have put an extraordinary amount of pressure on the reds to win tonight's game. We, send on the show yesterday they gotta give this team credit for pulling itself off the Mat just from where they were in the middle of the afternoon on Sunday five three game. I know most of us really paying full attention to the bengals and maybe checking in occasionally on the reds. That's how it works for better for worse on a on an NFL Sunday. But I'm keeping an eye on that game and it's five three middle innings down by two cardinals have had their way with the reds forever including this season and if they lose that game, they're twelve hours away from being twenty in two thousand, seven season high seven games under five hundred score seven times Suarez. Big Punisher? homers. The reds bullpen comes up big on a day where we find out that Sonny Gray has to go on the injured list at least. Stay alive and the series against Pittsburgh matter they get a couple of home runs one in each game from Joey votto on Monday trevor. Bauer. Comes up absolutely huge and the first game on Monday despite early in the game not having his best stuff. Trevor Bauer is a heated sell young race right now but Tyler Stevenson. Was the hero and then they scored a bunch of running game to overcome very early deficit put themselves in a position where we said it yesterday they're sitting there twenty three and twenty, six I. Just I'm operating forget what the cardinals do in they have a ton of games to make up. Double header today the pirates have some games a bunch of games against the cardinals. Of The I'm more worried about where the reds are I kind of you five hundred Gimme the thirty and thirty. Forgive me the thirty and thirty, which which by the way if they do chances are that includes some wins against. The Milwaukee team that's chasing them. Pittsburgh plays the cardinals, five times starting tomorrow with a double header on Friday. Hopefully, the Pittsburgh pirates remain playing like the Pittsburgh pirates cardinals have been weird all season long they've been weird this week blown out last night a gave up eighteen runs to Milwaukee team. That's also had a week but nonetheless I kind of you. It's as simple as get to thirty wins and whether it says the second place team in the National League central or one of the two wildcards. I feel reasonably comfortable saying that if the reds win thirty games. which which means you got to finish six and four. They will have a playoff spot. They will have a game scheduled two weeks from today. I'm going to feel better about that. If they're sitting at twenty five and twenty six, then if they're sitting at twenty, four and twenty seven. Let's be honest. Maybe. You don't want to hear this. This is not to take any credit away from what the reds done. But. Over the last couple of weeks, they have managed to win five games out of seven against the pirates. Pittsburgh pirates are fourteen and thirty three. The Milwaukee brewers are a team that look they're in the hunt. We can question how good they are, but they're they're right there. There are half game behind Cincinnati those are three games. The other six? Are Against. A team that has the best record in baseball team. The trails them by three games in their division, Chicago White Sox, and Minnesota. Just from a mathematical standpoint, there's a deeper dive into the baseball part of this is Sonny Greg and come back and pitch. This season remains to be seen. Are The reds going to continue to get the kind of start that Trevor Bauer has delivered? All Year has Louise Castio put some of his struggles behind him. Just. mathematically. If the idea is get to thirty wins, and now there's no more games against the pirates. and. Suddenly moving forward it's. White. SOX brewers, twins, and I got to win six out of those three games. I. I dislike that a heck of a lot more than I dislike gotTa win five out of nine. But at least I've got a shot. Michael Lorenzen was big last night. and. We're going to talk about what baseball wants to do. Next year with a Washington Post story published late last night rob Manfred wants this year's postseason format to be applied the next season. Let. Let's be honest. The reds are benefiting from the fact that a sixteen team playoff. This year was almost a necessity no issue with. This is not a great team. They're not playing well right now. For me the idea for the reds in two thousand and twenty wasn't merely to get in the postseason it was to win while they got their. Now, this is well before cove in nineteen interrupted the entire season changed the entire landscape of the sport. But I kind of you this as if they can get to the postseason chances are they will do so on the strength of really good starting pitching. And that might mean, eighty, six, eighty, seven, eighty, eight wins if they get a wild card if they somehow win this division if they get their baseball is random enough in the postseason. That The reds just get yourself there. But but frankly, I, sort of feel like to to really to really make make folks feel like this. This franchise has graduated franchise has really delivered the payoff for all the patients they're going to have to advance in the postseason and now that we've added. Six other teams now that you have eight wildcard rounds and given the fact that that sort of thing we've been hanging our hats on for weeks has been if they can just get there they have a couple of pretty good starting pitchers they can throw it whoever they would play. Don't think that getting there is not simply good enough. Feel like getting there is. If they get there and lose a best of three series. Honestly. That's not really gonNA feel like a playoff berth I think the idea is you've got to at least get to the National League. Division series in order for this season for a lot of us to feel like a success now I also sort of feel like what they do in two thousand, twenty one with the guys they have this year could shape how we feel about two thousand twenty but I know right now it's an uphill battle to get to the postseason and I think tonight's game is enormous. But quite frankly once they do clinch a postseason berth if they do. That's not the goal for me. I think in order for us to talk about this season being remotely successful when you have more than half year teams making the playoffs as much as you could say, well, they haven't been there since two thousand thirteen. So the first step is getting there getting there is a byproduct of things. The reds don't control what they do control is once they get their advancing and for a franchise that hasn't advanced in twenty five years in the postseason I. Think it's really import so got to. Get there first but as soon as they do, that's right where my attention is going and that hasn't been the case when the resume the postseason before although it certainly I guess was in two thousand, twelve nonetheless, Louise Castio has to come up big tonight, and if they could win this game against Pittsburgh I'm really less concerned I'm paying attention to Saint Louis I'll do some scoreboard watching but I think the number is thirty the reds can get thirty wins. I. Think they're going to be okay. And I like their odds a heck of a lot more. If after tonight they gotta go five and four as opposed to six and three. Seventeen minutes after three o'clock money's Malaysia. I am thrilled that you're here phone number as always by the way yesterday was one of the best. Day of phone calls we've had in a while five, one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen, thirty, eight, six, six, seven. Three seven seven six am Oh Agra fifteen thirty s how you can hit me up on twitter speaking of twitter. Poll question up thanks to cable. Cable Academy is giving you a chance. If you know, maybe the results of two, thousand twenty for you as you're looking for a new career thinking of a new career, you're thinking of expanding your skills while you're still in your current job cable academy can help they want you to join the revolution classes forming now GonNa Cable Academy Dot Com that's cable with a k. they sponsor a poll question. I wanted to ammo eager fifteen thirty and tell me what best reflects your feelings. On Rob Manfred saying next year. Yeah. We kind of like to have sixteen teams in the playoffs again. I got four different options. You could vote I'd love to hear from you on it. I have a lot of thoughts on this. It's a terrible idea i. think it's absurd. We'll spend some time on that noon. You are welcome to chime in on it both on twitter and if you call our show. But I remember back in January and February and even March. When people were just throw in grenades at the bengals and if you're a bengals finding how it made you mad you know I said, don't worry about what's being said now change the narrative. Tomorrow night's an opportunity to do so. Spent some time on Bengals v Brown's next on ESPN fifteen. Thirty. Cincinnati sports station. This week our bengals had north to Cleveland to battle the Brown. Powder there they should visit the rock and Roll Hall of fame. I went there and saw Michael Jackson's glove. It's sparking. Get The peg oath anthro coverage begins tomorrow three on ESPN fifteen, thirty, the official home of the Vancouver. We start that coverage with our show kick off at eight twenty. Twenty three minutes after three. My. Name's Melissa. Game Tomorrow. That is. There's there's an opportunity man. I. Go back to. The pre-draft process in. I won't say that I didn't get a little annoyed less so with. You. Would you would hear a segment on the Dan Patrick Show or Mike Florio by the way shows that I like. Where you would hear segment involving either Joe Borough being backed into a corner about well, you really want go blame the bengals. and. Then the narrative that would here as well you know he didn't say I can't wait to play for the bengals. He was Kinda noncommittal and we were trying to parse words and connect dots and then. It turned into this all he could pull an ally I. Think it annoyed at those people get annoyed. When I would like encounter feet, people sometimes get on social media. It's like. Well, you know what they said on the radio is he's GonNa Pony it's like. Okay first of all, who's they second of all that's probably not what they said. They wondered if you will. All. Of that was based on. The brand of this team. And I. Listen to the people get really upset with it really upset at how this team is branded nationally. I would borough when play there why would you wanNA play for the Bengals? Why would he not pull an Eli would would you really want to be the first round? The number? One overall pick if you had to go play in Cincinnati that was for for like two two and a half months? It was a non stop barrage of potshots being taken. By. People at Cincinnati Bengals. Nonstop we dealt with it right before the draft I remember asking like. Have you paid attention to the Miami Dolphins who haven't been able to find a quarterback since Dan Marino retired and Damara's last pass came in the twentieth century. But yeah, tell me again how great the dolphins are. And I would constantly here In Cincinnati is a place where quarterbacks go and they get forgotten and they get ruined. How many times did you hear that? Other, the bengals are GonNa ruin him. Actually if there's one thing, the bengals don't do. It's ruined quarterbacks. So there was a lot of annoyance of people saying things about the bengals. And I said this in February and the game tomorrow gives me a chance to kind of revisit this. Change what people say you're not going to change what people say by tweeting about how many playoff games the bengals have been in since two thousand five, you're not GonNa Change by pointing out the deficiencies of another franchise you're not going to change by. Making Fun of Mike Florio, where people like that the bengals have to change it. That's to me. That's what a game like tomorrow night is about now I don't think the Bengals if they win the game tomorrow, suddenly people are GonNa go you know what Boy Kansas City in Baltimore they'd better look out because here come the bengals this year I don't think anybody's going to do that but. Of The onfield results over the last decade or so. which which are, which are the Games which are the results that have been most closely connected to the bengals brand. It's been how they do in postseason games and how they do in Prime Time Games. Those are the Games that People Watch your team the most, but that's how it works when your team is on at one o'clock on Sunday. I you know. I'm not gonNA pay close attention to the to the giants as I did on. Monday when they're on Monday night football playing the steelers standalone games that's where most people pay attention. On Friday morning. On all those shows. That said all those things about the bengals back in the winter. They're going to be talking about this game tomorrow night so. I was asked today. Who Do you think this game means more to the Bengals or the Browns and. For the purposes of what the teams are going to do this year frankly I think Cleveland Cleveland. At, some point all the hype has to add up to a winning season at some point, all the hyper for Baker Mayfield and hotel. Beckham, in all the browns the at some point that has to add up to a postseason appearance I think that's the level that are being held to this year. I don't think we're doing that with the bengals. But from a reputational standpoint from a branding standpoint. This game is enormous for Cincinnati. Here's where you take the step forward. Here's where you start to shut people up. Here's where you start to make people look at you a little bit differently. And you're to do it with the guy that everybody focused on back in January and February march and April it's going to be Joe Borough. So this is an enormous opportunity. If you get annoyed with people say about the bengals. And they say those things on Friday morning because the team loses. That's on the bengals man. and. That sort of illustrates a large chunk of what's on Joe Boroughs Plate Right now Joe Borough maybe more than anybody connected to this organization is tasked with getting people to change how they feel about this team that applies locally and it applies nationally. Now Joe is going to be on his own tomorrow night. If the offensive line stinks people around the country are going to be wondering wait a minute Bobby Hart. Guy Is still there in Cincinnati Camp Block anybody. Or they spend all that money on free agency on the defense that's what it paid off. That's paid off and they they locked in Joe Mixon, but that's how they use it like. Here, it is. This is this is the opportunity. So show up tomorrow night look like a well coached team look like you made some some smart roster decisions. Put Joe Byrne a position where he has a chance to win have Joe. Borough? himself. Progress from what we saw on Sunday win the football game beat Baker Mayfield beat a team that has gotten a lot of national run over the last couple of years. Maybe, it starts to shift the conversation. It's gotTa start at some point it's gotTa start somewhere. The more they lose regardless of the quarterback is regardless of who the coaches the longer it takes. The more you're going to hear some of the same things that people said about this franchise back in January February and March. that. As much as anything is what tomorrow is about. Bigger stage this franchise has had in a while they were a talking point more than they've been during the off season more than they've been at any point in recent history. What do they do on the field people watching? Here's their opportunity three thirty. ATM Allegra Fifteen thirty on twitter I re tweeted the poll question your phone calls and welcome and five, one, three, seven, four, nine, fifteen, thirty, eight, six, six, seven, two, three, seven, seven, six. Austin Hendrick bengals traveling to Cleveland they take on the browns tomorrow night game you'll hear live on ESPN fifteen thirty in the big ten is GonNa have football this fall there was a vote today the big ten is going to play. The season is scheduled to begin the weekend of October twenty. Fourth teams will play eight Games in eight weeks. There will be a big ten championship game on December, the nineteenth and those schools will be and frankly should be eligible for the College Football playoff. We'll chat about that with. David Book Nuts, DOT COM coming up in just about five minutes. From UC perspective. There has been this surge of optimism about bearcats possibly having college. Football playoff hopes. That has been based on two things. They have a chance to have a really good team. Be Paul wait a minute to power five leagues aren't GonNa play. So maybe there's going to be an opening. I'm here for those conversations. Until I. See a group of five school that shoe horns itself into the College Football playoff. I'm always going to be skeptical that one will be invited to the College Football Playoff College. Football. Playoff is. A. Result of the power five conferences. And so far we haven't had one UCF when undefeated didn't get him. Some does the big ten having season. severely. Lessen the chance of a group of five school getting to the college football. Playoff. Yeah yes. Yes. There are now four power five conferences playing. I'M GONNA continue. To assume the PAC twelve is not going to there's only four spots in the CFP. My led to believe especially school like you see and to the best of my knowledge, the rest of the. With, the exception of Houston, which is GONNA get a chance to go play Baylor. You're not going to have a chance originally this year Cincinnati was scheduled to play in. Nebraska. I'm not sure how good Nebraska was supposed to be but the think. was they can run the table and you could point to a win on the road at a big ten school. Let's say last season the cats figure out a way to win both games against Memphis and somehow some way go to Columbus and beat the Buckeyes which obviously didn't happen. Well, you have a hell of a lot more ammunition. If you could say, we beat beat a team that's a national power on their home field obviously again that didn't happen. You're going to be armed with that two point to and say look against the power five school. Here's how we did. There are none on UC's schedule. I, I look at it very, very simply a. Were really is the saying putting the cart ahead of the horse we're really putting the car to have the horse when we're already having discussions about Ucla College, Football Playoff worthiness before they've played a game. I mean, this is like buying a lottery ticket and getting mad that your wife won't let you Redo your man Cave with your winnings. Like. You know I I I off. They would have to go undefeated and that's really hard to do and I think in this league it's going to be really hard to the top of this league is going to be really good Memphis is going to be formidable despite the defections think ucf is going to be a formidable despite audits I think Smu, as a chance to be pretty good uc always has a really hard time playing temple. So I always assumed that game is going to be tough and it's going to be in Philadelphia it's and they've got to win the conference championship game which means beating the same team twice. Maybe, it's smu maybe it's Memphis maybe it's UCF and maybe all of that can happen and if it does, let's have the discussion man let's compare resumes. Let's compare lengths of seasons and there's GonNa be some inequity here big ten schools are GonNa play eight plus the plus one which everybody's GonNa play, which is weird but they'll have nine games. You see if they win the conference championship game is going to have eleven. Let's have the discussion but I gotta be honest with you. I'm going to have a hard time get worked up about this before they play a game and legitimately I'm a big believer said this about using big twelve expansion control the part you can control. Facilities in order get your programs in the place they need to be, and then the next time we comes calling hopefully, you're better position than you have been before I think the school has done that control what you can control the reds if they want to go to the playoffs when the rest of your games. And chances are that are going to be in but I'M NOT GONNA lose sleep about the cardinals could win because they're winning percentage is going to be better and there some inequities here control what you can control go eleven. Like I invite the discussion I wanNA. A UC football die hard. I am begging to have the discussion go. Until then? I just. Am Skeptical that the College Football playoff is ever going to invite them or any other as will be I. would sort of like to see them decide that for a year we're going to expand the field to take care of some of the inequities like one school playing eleven games one school playing eight games, one school playing nine games, and you do that in a way that gives room to a group of five school but man, okay, fine. Go Eleven now. Go beat UCF on the road. When you're game on the road, SMU HANDLE BUSINESS AGAINST MEMPHIS, win a league that you haven't won yet, and then when the conference championship game, which means you would be hosting it that you didn't win last year dude let's do it. Go Eleven Oh ucf as annoying as their case got they at least had a case they at least can make the argument. The argument held no water until they actually went undefeated. So I just I hear people and I go. We're they're going to going to feed it right now hard that isn't by the way if you're asking me to make a guess. Ten in one I, say they play in the College in the ACC title game and I'll even say they win the as he title game because I don't know who they're going gonNA play, but it's hard to go undefeated I just. I have a hard time. It's sort of A. Basic part of how I feel is a sports fan. It's hard to say that a team and even in college football is going to win every single game. That's harder to do than. People give it credit for as good as the bearcats were last year they suffered to conference losses. Good as they were two years ago, they suffered to conference losses I think this team is better I also think the top of the League is pretty damn hard. So get there. Then let's have the debate. Let's out the conversation I'm sure I will convince myself that the bearcats should be given a seat at the table. I'm sure. And yes. Part of that is going to be hard overhead. But I. It's a credit to them that we could even start to think about this now but. Boy L. L. Out of games to win now and then. I mean not even go eleven or no just just get to a place where are you know what they're seven and our eight, and here's what they gotta do, and here's what the rest of the country looks like. Here's who still playing. Here's WHO's undefeated. Here's WHO's going to have a college football player in college football case in power five conferences. Here's is going to have a college football argument in Group of five school. Seventeen away from four o'clock and you know. Two years ago I'm sitting there going yeah. Best case goes six and six last year I thought they were an eight win team this year I think our ten winning. Including, the Conference Championship Game Ten that far from. So the fact that we're talking about this is a huge credit to this program. But if you're starting to get antsy about Oh what's this going to mean for Ohio State? If there are undefeated UC is to, they're going to take the Buckeyes or Penn State is Michigan or somebody like that chances are they will. Let's get undefeated. Let's finish undefeated. Then let's have the discussion. I to spend some time chatting with Dave David website puck nuts, dot com the night we found out that the big ten wasn't going to have a season I talked with Dave and the idea that the big ten was going to double back and say, okay, actually we're going to have season. That that didn't seem likely at all. Obviously a lot has changed. We'll go through everything that's changed and what it means specifically for us when we come back ESPN Fifteen, Thirty Cincinnati sport station. Our Buddy Austin Gal pro football focus at four twenty gotta get to our poll question about. The expanded baseball play offs. Rates brought Manfred says they're going to stick around even if we have a full season next year. And Jim Kelly on UC football coming up at four zero five a lot more in the reds as they get set for tonight. And the series finale against the Pittsburgh pirates. But big ten is gonNA play. They're going to start games the weekend of October twenty, three to twenty four, th Dave biddle covers Ohio state buck- nuts dot com twenty, four, seven sports network I am you and I chatted the night I was on down the hall the night that the big time decided and announced we're not going to play. and. So from then until now, I for me honestly this this sort of took on a big twelve expansion UC's role in it. Sort of feel where after a while, I just lost interest I stopped paying attention call me when when there's a decision. So there is a decision as somebody who has paid very close attention to this. Guide me through the last four or five weeks and what took his from there being no football now, football is going to start in just over a month. The big ten will say they have said today during their press conference that this is all about medical advances in the last five weeks and I think that is a big component here. There's no doubt about it with the. The rapid testing and the availability of the rapid testing and everything else that that they can do now that they were not able to do five weeks ago by also think you know I mean they completely downplayed backlash and act like they had nothing to do with it and I tend to think that that was another big component here was just the. Avalanche of backlash ten receiving Kevin warn the Commissioner was on record saying that you know he was surprised there was so much backlash. I don't know how you're the commissioner of the big ten in. You're you're surprised that there's that much backlash when you cancel the football season and I also think another huge facet of this is the Nebraska lawsuit I think that really helps. Kind of push the ball over the goal line, and that was maybe the kind of the final thing there, and maybe it would have happened anyway. But I think the big ten realized that you know they were in trouble they were going to have to release a lot of things they didn't want to release. There's a lot of talk mode that the initial eleven to three vote to not play that they didn't take a formal vote which normally think you you can just do what you want. Right If we don't take a form of Oh. Well, that violated the big ten bylaws if they didn't take an official vote and it just Kinda Straw vote so and that would have been brought out in discovery. So the lawsuit was also a big factor. Now, the Nebraska lawsuit, they're going to drop it because all they wanted was big ten football they were looking for money or anything so that lawsuit will dropped. So a bevy factors have led to this, but you know at least they're doing the right. Thing finally I I've said many times. This would have been in my opinion, the biggest disaster in sports history if all those other conferences would've have played, finish their season crown champion in the big ten was sitting at home watching it all meanwhile the NFL's playing, not just the not just the other college football teams. We have high school football here in Ohio we have middle school football here in Ohio and if Ohio state in the big ten was sitting Oh, watching it all happened will just been ridiculous. It kind of would fit in with twenty twenty. So I'm with you I, kind of like almost like giving up hope but Thank goodness that you know momentum picked up in this last week and really in two weeks ago it didn't look good. Even maybe a week ago today it didn't look at it really picked up steam. Oh. Late last week, and then by the weekend got to the point where it was like, wow, that's going to be surprising if it doesn't happen, this has been so surreal. I've never seen anything like it but at least hopefully, they got this right. About backlash and there's there's been a ton of backlash right and I think a lot of it is centered around honestly fans who kind of look at the SEC look at the ACC maybe even here in Ohio to a degree hey, Cincinnati's playing high school football is playing and Ohio state's not but I'm kind of curious about the backlash inside the conference. Ryan. Has, been great. He's had the backs of his players. I've gotten the sense that his bosses have his back. How much did the football people and the sports people pushing back on the original? How much of that played a role in the big ten reversing course and deciding to have a season. That was another big part of this I definitely and you had the president had Ohio state Dr Christina behind the scenes backing everything that Ryan. Day did like there's no way that he would've you know get out that statement that he did almost just you know not not just going completely against what his conference at the time was advocating and in such a forceful manner he had to have the blessing of the new president here to. Iowa. State Dr Christina. Johnson or he wouldn't have done it and So I definitely think that was a big part here and I think Barry Alvarez behind the scenes he's carries a lot of weight. He's definitely the most powerful athletic director in the big. Ten. Gene Smith is up there but Mary Alvarez's carries more weight with how great a coach he was and you know he he really turned Wisconsin Wisconsin was terrible before barriers got there. Now they're you know a perennial top fifteen program and It's not talked about enough and then you know now as a d., he just carries a lot of weight. I think behind the scenes he was really pushing for it, which is interesting because you had. Wisconsin's president was one of the ones that was definitely if anything on the fence and maybe more. So on on the side of not playing football, she really had to be convinced and now they're trying to act like it's a unified front but I I know for sure it's not that's just company line and that's fine. You know this is a good day for big ten football. So I don't mind them fudging the truth a little bit here and acting like, oh. Yeah. We're all fourteen of US are on board here because know for sure Michigan's president marks little. is not on board with this but they got enough votes they need it. Nine we'll find out exactly how many they got. They got at least nine, and then they're going to go with this. You know United Front again I have no problem with that. That's that's fine and and I've said all along though there was there was a way to get out here. There was a get out of jail free card and they used it. They didn't even have to say we were wrong because these are people that are very proud. They didn't come and admit they're wrong. All they had to do was say medical science has evolved in the last five weeks and that's exactly what they did. They didn't they didn't admit that they. Rushed to judgment on August eleventh which they absolutely did. But bottom line is they got it right. Dave metal by the way is on twitter and a great follow at Dave biddle buck nuts dot. com. So walk me through the timeline here eight games in eight weeks culminating at the end with a conference championship game and this weird plus one scenario that I'm intrigued by here. But but this leaves very little wiggle room. In fact, no wiggle room starting on October, the twenty, four th and so there's there's a big part we've we've already seen games postponed. We've seen teams have to stop playing I kind of wonder how that's going to play out in the big ten I certainly hope that it doesn't. Take me through here what the schedule is expected to be like yeah. I, mean absolutely no margin of error know in regard to Kobe or in regard if you get a loss for the College Football playoff but yeah, I. Mean. As you said, I, mean you know, October twenty four th that's five weeks from this Saturday and now they're saying they're going to actually kick off on the twenty third on on Friday but you know the five weeks you know from this weekend, they're gonNA kick off. And No. By week initially, we had heard they were going to try one of the things on the table was starting October seventeenth, which would have been four weeks from this Saturday mixing a buy week Give yourself a little bit of a buffer there. But yeah they're they're just GonNa roll the dice here eight Games in eight weeks and that nights week will be the week of the big ten championship game and They'll be December nineteenth, which is d night before the, college? Football. Playoff. Field will be revealed very good timing there, and as you mentioned now, it's really interesting how they're doing it in having the big ten championship game obviously the champion of the eastern division FA- facing the champion of the Western division they're having all the other teams play that day as well. So if you're number two, east two, West number number three, number three West and on. And on and on. So That's interesting. So there's nine games for everybody. So what this does is it gives them a chance to get you know enough games in where if you're highest state and you go nine zero and you win the big ten championship and you doing it you're probably going to be in the College Football playoff. In fact, I'd be shocked if a nine. And wouldn't be in but here's the problem though as you mentioned I, mean we're seeing we've seen in major league baseball. We're seeing it in college football You know thankfully, those sports are you know able to continue but you know we're we're definitely seeing some hiccups. So in the big ten, went a little further than I certainly thought they would go if a player gets but. If you test positive, he has to sit for twenty one days. Twenty. When you think fourteen is is pretty standard, twenty one days and the threshold for eighteen having to forfeit a game or something that have been clear if it's a forfeit if it's going to be played or what they're gonNA do cancel, it is just five percent of the team. So if you get a situation. Where you get like ten guys getting the virus, which is not that much of a breakout we've seen when you're talking about so many kids and we've seen Clemson at one point had over twenty three Texas tax had total of seventy five not at the same time but that's not much of a threshold five percent. So you know there's a lot just in general. There'd be roadblocks just like we're seeing in baseball and other sports. But when you add in the measures that they're taking other going a little overboard at least in my opinion twenty. One days seems a little much but you know at least they're gonNa try and do this thing. But yeah, I mean it's it's good that you brought that up because they're very good chance that we could see games cancelled and then they're they've left their theirself no wiggle room at all now it's a game just to be frank that's a game like rutgers against Maryland that has to get can't get canceled but the rest of the season go on you know maybe they would cancel that game and say we don't need to make it up those teams are. Not going to be eligible for the College Football playoff. Anyway, they might not even be bowl eligible so they don't even need to make up those games like what we're seeing with. You know if a certain baseball team, you know how games I needed to make up but they're out of the playoff race major league baseball. It's not gonNA make those games up unless they need to. It'd be the same exact thing. So I know a lot to unpack there but they yeah, they've given themselves eight weeks to play eight games and then that extra ninth. Game will be not just the big ten championship game but everybody else in the conference also playing a game in terms of you and I chatted second week of August or not GonNa play, and then you know the word was teams can can still go through throughs and workout and all that sort of stuff what has been happening with the Buckeyes and and the other big ten programs since that decision was made and then sort of take me through the next couple of weeks or with the next couple of days they're going to look like in terms of. Ryan. Day getting his staff and his players ready to play the season. That's GonNa be a crash course I it's been crazy I mean they took some time off after the decision was made and they came back and they were doing voluntary workouts which started two or three weeks ago, and then you know a week ago they started week and a half ago. Now they started mandatory workouts, no ads, and while that's going on I'm thinking I know they're not in pat so it's not as bad. Football practice is rough stuff is you know and it's like what? Are. The. You're out there. You're not just like, Lollygag and around and having fun with your friends I. Your football practice is tough stuff and what have you been practicing for? I couldn't even imagine the players out there having football practice and you don't even know if you're gonNa have a season and then they're talking about this nonsense, you might be playing in the spring. So they've been having voluntary workouts and then like I said last week and a half, it's been mandatory and now they're going to. Go, in this crash course where they're gonNA start restart training camp already had about a week of training camp before they called off no pads and or at least no hitting I. Think they did have a couple of days with pads but no hitting now they're gonNA have to ramp a backup probably a week with work on fundamentals notepads or you know maybe shells at the very most and then within a week you gotta think they're gonNA start hitting and I gotta be ready you don't have a Scenario like navy where were you out there like you've never played football before because they were practising football at all during their head coach. So yeah, I would imagine starting probably tomorrow I mean they're going to get go into soon as they can and they're gonNA start practice and they'll have that time to get you know get acclimated again but I imagine within a week they're gonNA start hitting and scrimmaging and there's a fine line there I mean urban Meyer was talking about this earlier today There's a very fine line you have to get your guys ready you blocking and tackling look terrible and football so far the collegiate level So you you have to get a certain amount of reps and what is that number though in practice of live wraps because you don't want to go over it you don't get your guys hurt. You don't want to go under either where you you're out there looking like a fool when the first. Game rolls around, and there's no margin of error this year if you're a team like Ohio state and if you're a lot of Ohio state, fans are thinking like Oh even without why Davis and Sean Wade still nothing changes. No, I mean. You don't. You don't lose the first round draft, pick it right guard probably another first round draft pick a corner when already lost your other three starting DB's from last year and not skip a beat. That is going to hurt Ohio state but the good thing for Ohio State is the one guy they could not afford to lose his fields. So they're going to be really really good but they cannot afford one misstep. They'RE GONNA be out of College Football playoff picture so they have to get ready. So you know as urban said you gotTa Work Blocking and tackling you can't do too little but you can't do too much too much. But Hey, that's why they pay Ryan Day seven million dollars a year. So let me. Fields. And that's where I was going to go next. Let's go Obviously he has a lot to gain this year. He is a heisman trophy candidate. He is going to be a first round pick may maybe he can leapfrog Trevor Lawrenson in that regard but where where has he been just in terms of? The willingness to play no matter what possibly opting out engaging with his teammates during workouts saying he'll play in the fall but not in the spring, where's Justin fields had been during during all this? He's been with his teammates. He was back in Georgia for a while, but he came back You know toward the end of voluntary workouts and he's been here for all of the mandatory workouts and as an aside real quick Sean Wade and white data's never came back Shawn Wayne State in Jacksonville. Florida why Davis stayed in Los Angeles California area never. Came back. So that was a telltale sign what they were going to do. So Jason's been back here and he's he was the one that got on social media had a couple of hundred thousand people signed a petition to to get the big ten to play and he's been just very vocal voice and you would think he'd be the one that would want. To opt out maybe more than anybody, he could not play and he's going to be probably the number two pick of the drafter definitely a top five pick but he wants this he wants to play and You know like I fans are already loved them but they're they There's really puts it over the top just how you know he again. I mean he he the Hayes in the barn for the NFL for him he can improve his talk a little bit but you're talking about already top five. Yeah. It can be the number one pick but he wants to win a national championship. He wants to win the heisman trophy. We had a zoom call with them when they thought they were playing in. The schedule was revealed six days before the big ten called it off and I asked him about his goals and usually you kind of you know bs answer he was like, Yeah when win the National Championship. Trophy and you know he's a delightful young man to be around and he is was so good last year as a first year starter as a sophomore first year in the Ryan Day offense you gotta think he's going to be better this year we're not having why Davis around is is not going to be a friend for for justice field does have a good wide receiving corps and just this Ryan offense is just a a well-crafted offense. You can expect big things out of him. It's really GonNa be fun to watch that. Trevor. Lawrence Justin fields bad on. There's GonNa be other guys in the mix too but. When We day we lost eight. Okay. We Lost Dave I. Well, we're late anyway Jim Kelly Dave biddle buck nuts dot com I know where Dave went. We know our Jim Kelly is going to be the UC football. He'll be with US NEXT ON ESPN fifteen thirty. Cincinnati bengals play here. ESPN fifteen three. Count. Our but it was worth name's Malaysia. This is ESPN thirty week check with. Pro Football Focus Austin gals on the show to. Grade the bengals and the browns coming up at about fifteen minutes. We've got to address today's poll question. We'll hear from David Bell about twenty five minutes plus Brennaman and Jones baseball but. A season that has been highly anticipated since before last season ended. But the bearcats finally gets underway on Saturday with a Game Against Austin P. at Nipper stadium, you'll hear it live on one to seven W.. With. Dan Hoard and Jim Kelly who joins us this afternoon it's. Good to have you man there were times this summer I wasn't sure. We'd be talking football this fall. So here we are and I'm happy about it. I'm very happy about it to mow and you're right there man it was up and down and there were times I thought this is not going to happen and then You know I'm just glad that it's here and and to watch you know college football the last couple of weeks and pro football this past weekend not going to be without its its problems. But at the same time, it's definitely happening. It's definitely happening and I remember talking with Luke fickle when he decided to stay UC, and this is you know two three weeks before the world changed certainly in sports and pretty much everywhere else as well. Obviously but I remember thinking, Wow, this team this program has back to back double digit win seasons they're going to bring back the same coach. Same coordinators at least we thought and that ended up being the case same coordinators, offense defense, and special teams accent quarterbacks coach same starting quarterback from the last couple of years. Yeah. There's GonNa be attrition. Some guys who left for the pros players graduate new faces coming in I, WanNa ask you about wide receiver but what continuities important and then you add to it all the challenges of the last five or six months I feel like this programs in pretty good shape to navigate what's ahead because of that continuity. You know there's some there's some things that you just can't predict, and hopefully you know those leaves the bearcats alone. The one thing has done since day one and he uses expression a lot that I live under a rock. Well, what he's trying to do is instill that in his players and say you guys focus on Football Wilbur about the rest of the stuff and I think he's done a pretty good job there. That's the one thing that I. It was a whole lot of things I like about him. One thing that he's done that I've not seen a whole lot of coaches do is keep these guys. Focus straight ahead whether that's you know playing ucf or whether that's maybe going against an opponent that you're supposed to be. You know that you know if you take them lightly, they've got the opportunity or the talent the beach you can keep a team focus and he's done a good job so far you know it's going to be a long season. It's GonNa like I earlier it's probably going to have its ups and downs but right now they're ready to go and they seem to be focused and you hit it on the head, the continuity and the consistency. Is there the coordinators the head coach, the quarterback? A quarterback coach, who's who's back you know and You know they've they've lost coaches but that's A big time program and when you have success things like that are going to happen. As, you were talking I was I was thinking of the preseason expectations and that I thought of two years ago when they in a year where a lot of us thought man, maybe they can win six games. They have such early success they win at the Rose Bowl and. Early in that season thinking God this these coaches that these guys are equipped to handle this new success and I never really felt like that focus was was was was thrown off I always felt like they were they were really well equipped to handle success last year boy, they lose forty two zip to Ohio state and any any concerns we had about that lingering I think were gone within the first ten minutes of the next game. They moved on quickly that focus remained, which is why given the expectations which they've embraced I feel like the mindsets built in to be able to handle a lot of the ancillary stuff whether it's related to protocols or just related to the massive expectations that exists this program. Well I hope so and I know the one thing you know this is the first year that coach fickle is gone out at least said, hey, we got an opportunity to be pretty good. He's always Kinda taking the role is You know we're going to be. All right. We play hard. We're GONNA be fine in you mentioned that Rose Bowl game because you're right going into that. Year. Every one of US said, six six would be a good year and then down the stretch in that game against Ucla in Pasadena when they opted to go for it on fourth and whatever it was in ended up putting that game away I said you know what? There's something different about this team and and quite honestly that's two years ago now and they've stayed with it I have no doubt. That, that's the mentality that you know that that's not the mentality. They'll have this year they've got something you know and again whether it's the coaching staff what he what he's built into this team, it's both You know their expectations are high, but there's not a doubt in my mind. They don't think that they can do this and as long as. They keep that focus and nothing derails them. They should be fine. All right more mechanically, I remember talking with you about this in Birmingham last year SORTA looking ahead to two thousand, twenty thinking at at some point, they're going to have to get more explosive on the outside wide receiver. There's one area on this team where you would like to see them just just. The talent, they have the explosiveness nothing against the kids they had. It would be at that position. It feels like they've done that. So what can they do offensively this year that maybe they lacked being able to do the last couple of years. You hit it right on the head. They are. They are better this year wide receiver and they did struggle last year Alec Pearson's back Jay Sean. Jackson is back in both of those guys particularly out terrorists became the deep threat and did a really nice job. Jay Sean Jackson had a subpar year but I watched him a lot this summer when I was out at Tampa higher ground and he had a really good summer. But what they've done is they've been able to add people to that to that group to room that it really makes them competitive, and if they're able to be better at that and they definitely need to be they ran the ball. So well, last year, their offense ivine is going to be solid this year their offense of line was solid last year but had didn't go without its issues particularly on the penalty side of things and and if you look at James Hudson who you mentioned that Ballgame Oh. Hudson was able to start that game for the first time. He made a huge difference in various harper at the other tackle very, very strong but the wide receiver position man, they of just done a phenomenal job of building up they. They knew they had to do that they went out they got guys from the transfer they got to transfer some big time. College is one from a junior colleges junior college rather they they have incoming freshman there guys that were on staff either departed or have gotten better. So I. Think, they're going to be a chain that you're gonNA see throw for three, hundred, fifty, two, four under yards every game. But if they if they can throw for two eighty to ninety, maybe three hundred or even two fifty on a consistent basis with the way, they're going to be able to run the football and having a balanced offense. There'd be they're going to be leave on offense and that's not even the strong side of the ball for this year. So you know you look at a guy like Michael Young or transferred from Notre, Dame you. You've got a couple of other guys transferred in an not to mention you even have some freshmen at the wide receiver position. True Freshman. Be Able to contribute this year. So they're going to be strong at wide receiver and it's good to say that because we haven't seen it in the loop fickle era and we quite honestly that was missing big time in the Tommy Tucker bill years as well. Yeah you're you're right about that. You made an illusion to them on defense and I want to go there but let's let's let's stay with let's stay with the offense and focus on does Ritter there were times last year where were you and Dan would would mention during a game does it and Tony as well boy does is struggling. They're having a hard time getting the ball downfield doesn't make sense to to give Ben Brian a chance that never happened until an injury necessitated it and Ben played obviously in the regular season finale against Memphis and he showed you what he can do. He was far from perfect but he showed glimpses of what he can do. So now you go into a season where you're expecting more at the wide receiver position that to me a little bit more pressure on. Dez and you've got a backup who is played and had some success. Does that change at all luke pickles level of fate that he has shown in? This year? Well I you know I think if you look at desert year last year I mean we constantly were saying to each other in the booth. is He her you know or what's wrong with him? He's not mentally in it today and I and I think we found out after the season that he was banged up all year now. As he came, we came down the stretch and you listen to that game in Memphis where we're Ben Bryant started you know that's when he he really kind of we kinda solve and the first Memphis game that his arm isn't right. So he needs some time in an and I thought Ben Bryant who did make some mistakes? He looked like a rookie quarterback getting in there I start. But all in all showed signs of being a very, very capable backup As we went, you know came in the in the championship game, and then of course, in the bowl game in Birmingham and won the MVP down there and that game and look good and I think we all still have in the back of our mind. You know was he really hurt or did he just have subpar games but I will say This and watching him a little bit of spring. Ball. Of the week of Spring Ball that I got to a couple of practices and then the handful the practices I saw out of Campfire ground He looked really good and he made it a no doubt that he was the clear leader. Now you've read a lot about that. Some of that is the off the field or at least the not off the field, but the you. Know the character, the leadership part of it, not necessarily the arm. However I will say the quarterback part, the arm, and the running ability he got took control. The good part is particularly with Calvin and injuries. It's good to have a guy like Ben Brian I. Think they go into this year knowing that at any time if something happens, you know whether got, you know God, help us if if a desert or comes down it. Has a positive test Ben Bryant can get in there or you know if there's some sort of injury that gets does banged up, Ben Brian can get in there and you won't lose a beat no question. Ben's a great roller and we saw that in the game in Memphis But that being said, I think they're solid at quarterback. We WanNa see him have a breakout year Dez Bryant of course, I'm sorry that's. That would be. Another guy but you. Won't be the first. The first time I've said that, but you know what I mean you you to see him having a year that's unbelievable and he has the potential to do that. You've seen some some great defensive backfield at. UC. This year's crop be the best. Wow Yeah I mean. Was it two thousand, eight I think where They had a really really good three of those guys ended up in the NFL quite honestly if you if you take now and again you have to understand in today's again, there's usually five of them on the field but I think I, think there's a potential for six guys play back there to somehow get a shot in the NFL. That's how good they are back there. Now that's over a few years that's not six going out this year but you know you got Kobe Bryant, you got James Wiggins. So you know last year got hurt preseason didn't get to play their force had one heck of a year wasn't even expected to play and had one heck of earned sorry Not. Not the. Forest forest was expected to play, but you're GONNA hit said. Who came in and filled in for For whigham so I mean they've gotta get any on Gardner was a freshman all American I mean, they are really really strong. Bush back there filling in in his first game as a bearcat what two interceptions recovery in the same game, its first game you played. So th they're loaded back there they really are, and I, think you know I honestly think the one spot they get a little bit dinged on as far as you know where they might be week a linebacker spot because they lost their starters vast last year in in Brian Writing Perry Young. But at the same time, they're going to rotate six guys in there that are very, very good not to mention. You've got that secondary behind you in a very season defensive line in front of you there's a whole lot of weaknesses on this. I can't wait for Saturday I'm thrilled that. I'm thrilled that man I times in the early part of the summer. Why was really really skeptical that we'd be we would be nipper stadium this fall. I. Wish I wish folks could join us. Nonetheless, I'll see Saturday. Thanks so much. I have my doubts and I'm looking forward to it. So should be a great year. Should be Jim Kelly has the game with Dan Hoard on Saturday we are laid our buddy Austin gail pro football focus. We'll talk some bengals Brown's next. Inc Presents football in the net brought to you in part by Papa. John's pizza on ESPN fifteen thirty the official home of the bengals. On Wednesdays we spend time with one of the analysts from pro football focus, PF? Dot Com, and One of the go-to guys that leave enjoy talking with over the years is Austin Gale. Who is As I just mentioned on pro football focus is also on twitter at. Underscore Austin gale and he's with us this afternoon how you been. Great it's great to be back on with you. It's nice to have you with me. Let's let's just get right to it. I watched Joe Berle on Sunday I God knows how many times you've watched him since Sunday, be critical put under the microscope gray JOE BOROUGHS NFL debut. Mike and I who podcast with Mike Renner PF hundred school Mike, watched him together. We watched it so low he's done. Taping I think the biggest takeaway I had is that I really don't think Zach. Taylor. Put Him in a position to succeed at five protections with what could be up there with the bottom five offensive line in the NFL if you have five guys out on route including multiple tight ends, they can't create separation, save their lives. It's not gonNa make things. Easy for Joe Borough behind that offer climb. So I wasn't really impressed with the call from Zach Taylor, his overall offense game plan only seven play action drawbacks in that game which I found honesty absurd. But I said right around offensive play forty about forty offense snaps and you started to see Joe broke comfortable in the pocket and pushed the ball downfield with. Two minute drive we saw from borough is the burrow you're going to get into. They ran more action late necking protection held up better than early in the game and you really did see the Cincinnati bengals often be what it could be job working behind a competent online, extra men men, and to protect whether that'd be tight ends or running back and making play I. Think the first part of that game was ugly ugly from Zach killers account and on Bro. Side however as the game progressed in, got a lot better bill very accurate with the football. The AJ greenness is probably the most egregious play on that tape and I didn't think. John. Ross. Was All that great either I think he needs to get better there but that comes with jitters. You saw lane game all placement was up there with the best of the NFL you're going. To see more of that from Joe Borough as he gets more comfortable in this scheme that Taylor gets more comfortable going away from eleven personnel hightlight light personnel and five-man protections I think both Zach Taylor and Joe Borough need to improve in week two from how they approach the game One of the things that I think a lot of people notice as the game was unfolding. Was the absence for a long stretch of Tyler Boyd. took him forever to actually get a target. Now as the game went on, he was a part of what they did yet for a guy who is such a big part of their offense is called somebody balls. It took him a while to actually make an impact on the game when you watch to critically why was that? I mean, he just wasn't creating separation I. It was a struggle for the bengals live receivers to create separation in that game in Los Angeles chargers having good secondary I, I, I. Know that however he was on the wasn't creating separation. Every agent green had a ton of contested targets I. You really need to see what was called an underrated receiving core all off season step the hell up like I mean if you're going to go against. chargers defensive plays a lot of nickel and dime personnel. You're going to see more defensive backs on the football field. It's harder to get open targets against the chargers even without the stud safety throwing James. However what they did on Sunday I don't think it was enough. You had five guys on a row five-man protections and none of them were getting open. That's what led to so many quarterback hits so many pressure drop back but I think. It was a very much a learning game for a lot of those receivers and. A lot of players overall. I think there's better. Better place to be had on offense to the bengals literally across the board including the playcallers act Taylor. Let's let's go to the offensive line and granted I can mention everybody who took a snap. I'll focus onto one would be Joan Williams who we're going to be focused on focusing on no matter what because he's basically a rookie and the other obviously is Bobby Hart who had a rough afternoon and bobby hearts a whipping boy right now and understandably. So let's let's start with him was he has bad on Sunday as I. Think. I mean, he will. He wasn't good and he's going to continue to be a liability along the line. We've known that since they've re signed him multiyear deal. If you off-season go like he's just not a competent offensive tackle specifically in pass protection, he earned high run blocking grade and this one got to the second level nicely played well against a young linebacking core they're locked up Los Angeles. What needs to happen 'cause you need pass protecting off into tackles in the NFL I understand you want to chase these guys that can block well at the second level he's run blocking, but you need athlete at the tackle. To have success if you especially especially, if you WANNA run five-man protections, you wouldn't find protectionist bobby heart there. Right tackle. You're you're asking for a disaster I think he needs help as much help as he can get and I think even Zach Taylor said that after the game like our job protect our offensive line because it's not giving knowing that it's not good. I think you need to keep tight ends into health and chip need running back to stay in the block like it's not going to be a good year if you leave. On An island that's just plain fact I'm sorry you guys signed him. Sorry. This is the situation you're in but these are the cards you've been dealt. He's gotTA protect that Man Johnny Williams. Would you think? There was some good and some bad on his tape. I thought overall, he didn't get overpowered a ton which I thought maybe coming up injury not given the opportunity to get stronger and his rookie year I thought you could saw that more jobs both in Dublin, Ingram's a tall order though the guy hasn't played football on a very long time and I think the fact that he played. Okay. In this game is a huge feat for the former first round a guy that I obviously was super high on coming out to sixty three point five over array in this one wasn't nearly as bad as Bobby Hart was specifically in Pass Protection I. Think he's Going to get better as the season progresses I don't know if Bobby Hartwell necessarily but Joe Williams has the tools that's very better as the season progresses he's the guy that they need to lean on to not have to have a tight end block for him and not have to chip for him all the time John Williamson. Get better each week especially with the slate of extra vendor he has on his schedule I think it's going to be huge to the Bengals Austin Gail pro football focus PF dot com get any level subscription and you are going to be said for the season from every conceivable standpoint make sure you follow us on twitter at. Underscore Austin gale and gale has a y. let's let's flip over to defense and again I can ask you about any number of guys. I want I want to focus on the secondary starting with William Jackson the third they went after him. The chargers did immediately, this is a big big year for him. It's a big year for him because of the impact he can make on the team and it's a big year for him because of the kind of money he can make after this season. What what are the tape show is when when we when we focused critically on on William Jackson third. Wellness game no passes. No interceptions. So you're not gonNA earn really high grades if you're not getting your hands on the football, but you know four receptions allow three two yards from seven targets, twenty four yards of which coming after the catch but he didn't miss a single tackle I. think there's obviously ways for him to improve but William Jackson Berry competitive in this game I thought he looked my day last year I think he's finally healthy in my opinion and I think William Jackson again it's GonNa regress me and I don't Think he is the player that great it's super well, which I walked twenty eighteen. He's GonNa regress bit improve this year and you're going to see a competent quarterback for Cincinnati, bengals. If you can get the ball production, he had in twenty eighteen like what was it like a twenty eight percent completion percentage you'll see him great highly about however I still think if you can put play like he did on Sunday every week that consistency along just thirty two yards and coverage is more than enough for the. Really. Lean on him as their top corner. For for years I've complained about tackling and the middle of the field being wide open neither struck me as major issues on. Sunday. No not at all terrain practice tackle. So he was the leader in tackles medicine. It was very impressive performance forward, the bengals defense in my opinion holding the chargers who I know don't have a ton of talent but I thought they were competitive. Are cuge accusing maybe expecting week one I thought it was a much improved. Overall Sam Hubbard is growing into to being and what This team and eighty one point three run defense grade this past week five defensive stocks that means it's constituting lots and EPA for the offense really impressive self from the defense again, it was it wasn't the best team I mean it wasn't a really big test. The chargers have a lot of question marks on their side, but still the show like I did. I thought they were. All right. The browns and look the ravens are probably going to do what they did to Cleveland to a to a lot of different teams and so you kind of take the result with with a grain of salt at the same time that that was an awful performance for a team that. At some point they had to graduate to having a winning season and getting to the playoffs for all the hype they've been getting when you watch the browns on tape, give us an idea of the things that went wrong most on Sunday against Baltimore. Can't leverage over to the browns without talking about my guy just he back had an absolutely to Sunday oh my goodness. Give me some. Give me some Jessie Bates because. He had the flag thrown at him. A couple of different times. He had the plan. The goal line ray breaks the pass up I thought for the most part Jesse was really good. Really good flags were awful I thought Jesse based really good job on the Mike Williams reception coming over the top and making a hit. I. Mike Williams Got Ball. Now and obviously those penalties got nullified because both those players lowered their helmet. I thought he was playing with his hair on fire aggressive competent bath. That is what you need from a deep safety. My friend like he was playing exactly how you need thinks he's played being aggressive taking calculated risks chatelaine the hammer when given the opportunity I was really impressed with base look at the browns. Here's mark. Baker Mayfield does the guy seeing ghosts he's struggling very much struggling to handle the pocket in the NFL. It was concerns coming out of Oklahoma. His biggest concern and it isn't his five was handling pressure and facing dirty pockets. If you will pockets that are near collapsing, do you bail out of clean pockets? He's just seeing ghosts. It's it's a problem for Baker Mayfield and Kevin Fancy going in. We thought we'd put him in a position to succeed. If the fancy I think needs to take the reins of bit more one of our analysts cleaner wrote a piece that he needs to do what you know. Sean mcvay does with Jared Goff get the ball out of his hand Berryhill. Target and watch them consistently accurate. Pappas Baker Mayfield is a great accurate thrower. He doesn't have a great arm talent and he's troubles with pocket awareness. You need to protect him from those issues by giving him open grows near the line of scrimmage out, get the ball out of his hands. Early I think the Cincinnati Bengals can pick on this kid I'm. Telling. You right now get after forced into bail out of clean pockets. have him seen goes on Thursday and it's tough to predicted upset because the browns are counting another levels expect Baker Mayfield is an area we can exploit. Here's what I want to know more than anything about Sunday when when you when you watch when rewatch the Bengals game with a real Critical trained I. Could you determine which of Randy Bullock's legs he actually hurt. I cannot. I couldn't believe that he would what grabbing his right calf. That was honestly just terrible. I mean. Nick sent zealous back in the starting lineup reds China into within a game of five hundred. David Vel Chadha with reporters earlier today the zoom at great American. Ballpark and the first question we have for you is about a guy that I almost forgot his even on the team. Could. Could Wade Miley edge this weekend or is he still recovering e? I don't know about this weekend. There's an outside chance at at ten. I watched his side yesterday and it seemed to throw the ball pretty well, I do WanNa see how he recovered. We have we have a lot options right now. Had A lot of a lot of different pitchers start. And then. We have our core group. Has Been Pitching while so we just got. Today we should. We should be able to make a call on the next next three days. The year just to see Tj, antone obviously seems like any role you guys that put him in his he's pitch. Well, this year he really has I mean I didn't he picked last night. An important ending. He had been A. Few Times. Thank you through close to forty pitches in the bullpen which limited his outing to one inning. Otherwise, maybe more but. That inning kind of bridge the gap for. US. To to Lucas and It was just an example what he's really done for us all year. Yeah. Going into the season. you know I wasn't. I didn't know TJ really and he's he's really stepped up in a big part of our pitching staff. Especially, this year with all the. Different pieces that were were all dealing with to be able to start really just kind of bounce back and he's a strong strong guy and he's been able to handle a lot. With Cinderella after seven on Monday day off nine today day off tomorrow or presumably nine today tomorrow. Would he be kind of like? Passed the test and be full go after after tomorrow. Yes. I would say so physically. So I know he's I really believe he's going to be able to get back into it here. Pretty quick. You know as far as timing and all that at the plate. But it's not easy. What he's doing he didn't didn't have the typical In a rehab assignment where you can go to AAA and playing games so Yeah, we'll just. Take it one day at a time I. do think physically after today he'll be fine. So it'll be good to get some at bats tonight and having in the lineup tonight going into the author. A plus one, not just a championship game but the second, the second place teams in each division are GonNa play in the third place teams in each division are GonNa play. All the way down the line. Some of those games are going to be awful and I love the idea. Fourteen minutes away from five o'clock. We job that the clock here we have a lot to get to Richard Skinner is going to be on this show at five, twenty, two talk some Bengals, lots of things to get to there. We've got the reds and pirates tonight big ten coming back. We've got. We got to spend some time on baseball expanding the postseason which I was going to do now but now in late night can't. So I will at five Oh five. I just I hope you're ready for the era of baseball load management because it's common, it is common. That coming up at five. Oh five on ESPN. Fifteen Thirty Cincinnati sport station. Dimension the bengals brought back Tori mctyre to the practice squad and. Was Inactive for the game on Sunday then he got. He played in five games for the BENGALS. Last year. Last season watching Bengals Baltimore in Baltimore and With a couple of friends of mine and there's Tori mctyre on television and. For one of the very, very few times in my life I turned to the person that I'm with and I go all right who the hell is toward mctyre. He's on the practice squad now. So congratulations to him how much time do we have? We have two minutes. To two minutes before Brennaman and Jones on baseball two minutes to take a phone call on a sports talk radio show Bob, and Florence. You can have those two minutes. What's up? I'm well what's going on. I thought Tory had retired. No He's decided to maintain his profession as professional is a professional football player. So, mctyre is back tires back. Yes. Oh Hey, you know what I was thinking about something. If if Tommy, tebow Ville actually wins this election coming up. Do. You realize that the last two guys he would have replaced are both named Jones. So he replaced Butch Jones and what is the name of the person he is replacing potentially replacing in Alabama get. Running against Doug Jones. I haven't really followed the Alabama Senate race that closely that's pretty that's pretty amazing. Isn't that crazy? That's One other thing though and this I really ev you ever liked the team. And got to a point where you're so frustrated by you hope they lose. Well. Last year week sixteen I rooted for the Bengals to lose. But mainly because I just wanted them to get the number one overall pick. Yeah I yeah I, get I. Get you but I'm I've reached that point with the cardinals. And the reason I hope they do is because of their. Inactivity, of doing anything to make the team better it's been. Weird they didn't do much around the deadline. They didn't do much this off season I I don't want to say a word because I'm rude against the cardinals. I. Think they're going to run out of gas man I think GonNa they played too many games. No doubt what was the deal last night with with Mike she'll getting in the face of Craig counsel in the in the blowout loss to the brewers why this is as much as I know about it Mo- Braun had taken a swing and Melena. And it was a catcher's interference what a wound up being, but somehow they drifted over towards the brewers dugout. And I guess some of the brewers had something to say about you know the cardinal game or whatever. And I think it was around that and I believe one of the Peacemakers was Jed Jerko who played for the car. They had some pretty good years. and. It's funny. You bring that up because Jed Jerko right now has eight home runs. Do. You know who has the least amount of home runs for anybody playing first base on a regular basis in the National League. As Paul Goldschmidt. It is. And I I don't know I people keep saying you know he's having a good year and all this and how good he is but. I don't think the guy from a driving in standpoint has done much at all ever you. The only guy less RBI's at first base on a regular basis is Joey votto. There's there's a lot of reds fans who would say you know what? We'd still rather have Paul Goldschmidt why was Yadi Molina in the game when it was twelve to two and they have a double-header today Because they I don't know I think you already is a tough guy to remove, but you know if you're the manager. Thousand years old you still need them like what twelve to game you're in your independent race. That's a good question for my killed I. Think well, my shots are not allowed to manage the first game of the doubleheader. So maybe I can get a hold him and and and find out now here's the deal Bob seed now. Now, rooting against your favorite team, the cardinals because they didn't go out and do anything. I Say I am Oh I if they won two games tonight, I'd say right back on. Yeah I'm pissed that they just didn't didn't do do anything at all and you know I know Dawit crying they don't have any money but. Well Just. Wait until we have. Thank you so much Bob. I appreciate it as always just wait until we have a sixteen team postseason which rob Manfred says, Hey, the owners want next year in a full season. That is absurd for thousand different reasons. I'll list as many of them as I can Patrick Brennaman and Jones on baseball on. ESPN fifteen thirty. They're played and grime tied. Borough and his bengals head north battle, the browns and a big bed Buckeye state throwdown. Candy. Tin Horn a dangerous day lamp of the action. Coverage Begins Tomorrow at free on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official over the. Doing I'm allegra this is. ESPN fifteen thirty. Glad you're here. Thank you so much. Hope you're having a delightful. Richard from local twelve in about fifteen minutes on the bengals. We are about an hour a little bit more than an hour halfway from reds and pirates. Tonight, a great American Ballpark Nick Sam Zell is going to start for Cincinnati, Louise Castio is GonNa Pitch for the reds. And I you know I've. Fun. This time of year to get caught up in scoreboard watching the cardinals have a doubleheader they're about to get underway with the first game of that double header in Milwaukee to seven Games two seven inning games obviously cardinals bunch doubleheaders including another one on Friday against the same pirates team that comes into play tonight against the reds having lost a six straight games you hope the pirates can continue to be the pirates for one more night, and then maybe when they start playing the cardinals for the beginning of a five game series tomorrow, perhaps they could. Actually. Do with having done all that often this year and that's win games. But anyway, we we focus a lot on who else is playing and what the scenario czar I do this very very simply. And perhaps a little illogically. and. Maybe by the end of this, I'm proven. Wrong. I know we're all focused on what? The San Francisco giants are doing who obviously didn't play yesterday. I know we're spending a lot of time on scoreboard watching with the Colorado rockies. New York mets happening with the cardinals and the brewers who the reds have a half game lead on as of now at least and do get a chance to play next week at great American. Ballpark I. DO I do this? Simply I think thirty wins gets and I think a five hundred record gets. Shy of that. I don't feel so great. There is obviously no guarantee that thirty wins is GonNa get them in. You're dealing with some inequities here like the cardinals are not gonNA play sixty games. And there's not going to be make games but I just get him to thirty. At thirty wins. I feel pretty good and saying that they're going to make the postseason. So I think tonight's game is enormous. Last night last night was even bigger to a degree. Because, can you imagine what the pressure would have been on the reds to win tonight? Had They not won last night's game and between the two last night and today I would say last night was. The one that they're least likely to win. Michael Lorenzen gave start. He didn't just pitch an inning or to game five innings and he was he was fantastic man in for for guy that's had such an up and down season and he really hasn't for a guy that struggled with control and keeping the ball inside the ballpark boy came up big last night five clean gave up just a run didn't walk guy struck out six pitch efficient and got him to a place where now give the game the TJ Antone who? Watch this guy at all this year. He's fun to watch and it's been very effective either as a starter or when he's pitched in relief Luca Simms was really good last night and I would stop way short of saying that Amir Garrett was good. But effective enough got some help from a Brian Goodwin in Centerfield. Imagine and you could have stopped doing this because they scored three in the first inning. Joe Must Grove didn't have it settled down a little bit later on, but it's four nothing in the second inning and even with this team's bullpen issues at times this year not for most of the season I think you could feel pretty comfortable for nothing against the pirates team. But if you lose last night. haw You there is a ton of pressure on this team to beat. The pirates in a game that is frankly from a win perspective from pure talent perspective. The easiest one to win us just listening to Brennaman and Jones talk about it. I. Know There's maybe you don't pay close attention to the other league Chicago White the Chicago. White sox right now it's interesting for all the run. The cubs have gotten for their historically great start and then being the cubs. The Chicago White Sox have the second best winning percentage in all of baseball. Up a three game lead in their division and the other team in the American League on the reds schedule is a Minnesota Club. That's one thirtieth fifty. Now, we talk about these two teams and their respective motivation for winning but. These are these are quality clubs. Pittsburgh pirates are awful worst record in baseball. The reds have a series against the brewers which could go a long way toward determining not just how many games the reds win obviously, but we're they're positioned against Milwaukee. I. Tonight is huge and purely from a mathematical standpoint. If the goal is thirty. And maybe twenty nine and thirty one gets them in but if the goal is thirty. Six and three is tough man. Small short tiny sample size you basically got to win three straight series but. Three against the opponents they have. I feel good about the way this team is playing, but I don't feel great about that five and four five and four just seems a hell of a lot more doable especially if they can take care of business against. MILWAUKEE. Tonight is huge. It maybe doesn't carry quite the same importance as it would have. They lost last night. But I get Louise Castio coming off arguably his best started the season. I get a team that offensively look they're figuring out ways to score and it's not hard shocking. Yom, getting on base Joey votto swing in a hot bat and we'll see what Nixon. Does for for for the starting lineup tonight but. I the tonight mechanically I don't want to talk about how this team's GonNa go six and three and navigate a schedule that includes two of the best teams in baseball playing six of the final nine games against the reds so. Said this yesterday man it is it is you give them credit because Saturday night they lose get blown out. And you're staring at the possibility of losing another series another series and you're losing five three in the Middle Innings, I know most of us really paying close attention to football twelve hours away from falling to seven under five hundred. Now here we are talking about this team. Crawling to within a game of five hundred and they are easily in the hunt playing meaningful baseball and. It is conceivable that by the end of the night, this team has all by itself in second place. In the central so we will see we will see. Above, and beyond that, we're talking about a sixteen team playoff. This year. and. I have no issue with this whatsoever. Didn't from the get go. It was necessity I think you needed it to. Give a team a chance to overcome an injury. Give a team chance to overcome positive cove in nineteen tests. Shorten many mic season I think demanded a change to the playoffs structure. I'm here for I've been here for all these irregularities and weird scheduling quirks and all this weird sort of goofy stuff that baseball has decided to do that feels gimmicky. Let's do it. Let's have it. I. Think the playoffs this year are going to be fun. But these teams also didn't I'm talking about all thirty these teams didn't build their rosters based on. The possibility of having a sixty or not the possibility, but but having a sixteen team playoff this year. So the reason why I bring this up A piece in the Washington Post that came out last night. Or Rob for told the reporter that he expects. The sixteen team postseason to remain beyond this year. Adding that quote, an overwhelming majority of owners had already endorsed the concept before the pandemic saying quote. I think there's a lot. Commend it. I'm not even sure where I'm supposed to begin with this but but here's we're all try and I don't have a ton of time because we gotta get to. Richard Skinner here in a couple of minutes. This sport already has a problem with with owners not try and selling it successfully in cases selling it to their fan base just heard Bob from Florence, who called about twenty five minutes ago to talk about the cardinals, the cardinals ownership has said, we really don't make a lot of money. and. They took a team that won ninety one games last year and really didn't try to make it better. and. This is a thing around baseball this year. So. Now, what we're going to do is basically say, yeah, you know what to heck with building the best roster possible, which means keeping and retaining and acquiring the best possible players. Instead, all we gotta do is we get to seventy nine wins we're in the postseason. That that's not good Trevor Bauer for example. You. If you're the reds, you retain Trevor Bauer for one reason. We are under normal circumstances. You retain trevor because he gives you a chance at having the best possible team. Why do you want the best possible team because they're still clear incentive to win the division and there are still some level of exclusivity to the postseason which admittedly has been watered down. But at least there's a separation in a normal year between the wildcard teams and the division winners and you keep Trevor Bauer because you know what we're going to try to win one hundred games man. Now. Let's say. If, we win. Anyone Games. Next season we finished five hundred. You know we're on the playoffs and in the playoffs you know shoulder shrug anything can happen. So you know what we can do is we can let Trevor Bauer get away. You tell me what you're in favor of reds fan. I'm in favor of field the best possible team this disincentivize feeling the best possible team it also disincentivize is feeling the best possible team in July and August. I'm a big NBA Fan and I'm the first to admit I. Love the NBA Playoffs. Regular season is too long. It nullifies a lot that happens in the regular season. What do we have having in the NBA during the regular season load management? Right. Kevin Durant doesn't play the second game of back to back Sir the clippers may decide to collide Leonard doesn't play even though kind of felt like they did that with him last night or the older he gets Lebron's GONNA play less. How how do we feel that that's going to work when a team is in July and? I got the best record in the sport, and there's no chance I'm not going to be among the best eight in the league's load management that's going to be fun when you go to the ballpark. First Sport that sells the ballpark experience in a regular season that means something. Here's what we're GONNA. Do we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA make sure the regular season doesn't mean as much and we're going to give teams more reason to not play their best guys. Get your tickets. Now this is comically absurd. I mean I love baseball but you WanNa, talk about something that is going to drastically change my relationship with the sport and I'm I'm betting on a lot of people who sort of you this the same way that I do as well basically take a one, hundred, sixty, two game season and essentially decided it doesn't matter and I know and this has come up before I know the arguments that I'm. Going, to get it as well at no six, the cardinals one, eighty, three games and they won the world series. Yeah. Yeah. That was an oddity that was a fluke. It was weird. It stands out in history in seventy three a great reds team that won ninety nine Games, they lose the LCS to to New York the mets one, eighty, two games that year. Yeah. Massive upset again, odd sort of weird. It stands out because it's not regular. Legitimately. We're talking about the distinct possibility given baseball's postseason randomness. Seventy nine win team playing in eighty two win team in the world series. Is that sound fun to you? This is fundamentally stupid. It fundamentally runs counter to everything baseball supposed be about, which is a sport where the main attraction is supposed to be the regular season where the most amount of people can go watch games. And instead, you've basically decided to completely water down sheep in it and in many cities make it not matter. Point, was made on twitter the L. A. Dodgers went forth this off season. Is there any reason for them to go get Mukhi bets? If there's a sixteen team playoff in a full season none none whatsoever. If, you want the reds to keep Trevor Bauer and feel the best possible team you don't want to fail safe as. Of chance to get the. eighty-one team, you want them to have a reason to build the best possible team. This is beyond stupid. This is beyond stupid. I wonder what the average player things about this you're basically going to cheapen. There six months worth of work. For the sake of getting added postseason revenues that by the way owners don't have to share. It's one thing from a player's standpoint. If you're GONNA take all this new postseason money thrown into a pot, and now the players get it pull whatever added money. Let's say the reds they don't have to give you the players. Beyond stupid I, mean I mean beyond stupid and. There's like a thousand different reasons why if I had more time I'd get them all. But you take a sport that has six months regular season eighty, one home games each. And you you basically tell everybody. The only thing that matters is the playoffs. This sport is having a hard enough time getting people to engage in the regular season and another argument is going to be. You get more cities involved in the playoffs and. Take a look at the American league standings today. Playoff races over. There's more than a week ago platform over. These division races it doesn't matter who finishes them first place. It doesn't matter at all. I couldn't even tell you today how many games behind the cubs the reds are, how many games behind the cubs the cardinals are doesn't matter all. Beyond stupid be on. Stupid. And I hope the players push back on this and there's a part of me that thinks this is a big negotiating ploy. I've watched baseball owners and rob Manfred work for a while. Now I know better Richard. Skinner knows better about the bengals he joins US next. Is Football. Brought to you in part by CME plight lighting and sewer Bret Baier and by Skyline Chili on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of England's as we spend time with Richard, skinner of local twelve. Local twelve, DOT COM skinny on twitter at local twelve skinny. Here's a part of a couple of different PODCASTS. The angry quarterbacks, with Tony, Pike and James. Rabin also told the skinny podcast I submitted a question for them to answer this week. I. Haven't had a chance to listen my understanding is they didn't get get to it. So I'm a little less interested but I but I will listen on the list. I actually saw that on twitter after the fact and his bank for next week I I your questions are so complicated. I have to like get in and paper and jot down my answer 'cause you've got. Your question was quite unique. I'm not GonNa lie does require some thought. So I appreciate the fact that you're going to sit on it maybe do some homework think about it a little bit. This isn't one of those hot take you type question. So I'm already excited for next week. Yup It'll it'll be in the rotation for sure. So check that out. You guys do as you and rick roaring should bengals fans be encouraged. I'll go ahead and take care of that one for you. Absolutely three to go no timeouts Joe Borough goes down the field and comes this close to winning the game nothing else as far as I'm concerned matters. Yeah I thought the defense looked looked better They look good. I thought the second half of last year. They look better to they kept the team in games and you saw some some some glimpses I really liked the way the secondary covered listened to. Mike Williams is a little banged up hunter Henry Okay tight end. It wasn't a dynamic quarterback, but I think they covered well, not your main. Pratt, was all over the place I don Josh binds gave them honesty more than what I expected from Josh binds and so defensively that's encouraging as well. So yeah I do feel that way and I hate to douse the fire of that with remember how different yes, you're now. He's a clever guy look what they actually you know they couldn't but man great adjustments they made and what great clock management the the have to take a shot at the end zone and boy that that's awful encouraging and Ben Frisco came in and the rest of the season. The I'm with you. I think I'd be more encouraged to discourage by week I'm encouraged I'm encouraged by the Joe Joe Borough Peace and frankly that's all Sunday was about for me but. To a huge degree you're right at some point your franchise has to be about winning and that has to start sooner rather than later and I know they're going to get a game effort from a browns team I heard you talking but Tony about how you expect this team to play desperate. To prove this huge season for that franchise for a number of different reasons. But I come back to to all the potshots people were taking at the bengals in the off season and how mad people got and I said, all right fine when people are paying attention to win, they play go in those games. This is the only game tomorrow night. It's it's a big deal because Baker versus borough on Friday morning change what people are saying about what your Dan is all about by winning that game on the road tomorrow night. No doubt and I look I. Think you and I are in lockstep as most people. This season for me is I want to see Progress I wanNA see choper specifically make progress and all of those things and I don't have a I. Wish I could give you the hot take number of what I think is a is a successful season in terms of wins. But you know you gotta you gotTa team that's on the ropes a little bit and a franchise thought at one the off season again and maybe didn't and Yeah. If you hang around game, it's time to start turning those into wins. I mean you take keep saying well, we're we're close we're close well thankfully close close is not enough I mean that's how you play professional sports to be close. So yeah, I. Mean I. I. Didn't just get a chance to go up there and I don't think they do. But I think he's good as chances. Any I thought Zach Taylor was lukewarm when it came to the questions you guys asked about Bobby Hart and some you know we we saw it's different dynamic. We saw the Bengals Start Owen to lose on Thursday night football a couple of years ago and they swap out offensive coordinators. With the mini by and time to get ready for Philly. Bobby Heart is what we saw on Sunday, which frankly is pretty much what bobby heart is Sunday's is he the starting right tackle a week from Sunday that's a great question because I think it opened a debate in and I think the point that you made of it having a little bit longer timeframe to to kind. Of, make that switch to for day the film digested and then say, okay, come next Monday. Really next Wednesday when they start practice for the Philly game. Let's go ahead and make that that swap I. Think this week was was if they were going to do and it was a big ass just because of the tighter around time and all those things and I think in fairness. In fairness you know Melvin Ingram and Joey. Bosa are are just dynamic together. So you never get a breather on either side at least in this case, depending on where myles Garrett lines up, you can at least I don't know if they take a breather, but you don't have Melvin Ingram, Joey Bosa coming at you. So maybe does take step forward this week but if not I mean I, think I think all options are on the table. Again it to me, it comes back to this. This team acted with urgency this aussies you don't you don't spend the money they spend on defense well, where the the the the the change is going to be slow in the progress is going to be slow. It's nobody expects them to win eleven games this year, but you to me those those sorts of things we saw this off season, they've got to be repeated once the games actually started players are under performing especially somebody who's been here for a while like, bobby, hurt. We were not. This dude is not earned the benefit out. He an earn loyalty from the coaching staff. If he's not getting done, I gotta try somebody else I guess for me though. If the starting offensive line isn't supposed to be very good I'm I shudder to think about what what the depth or lack thereof is going to reveal. Yeah although I moved for Johnson, little chance last year and last game against Cleveland and played well enough to at least get himself in the all conversation for that position, right? I do we price came in and places ABC last week and I thought he he did fine I think he was great. But I think he did fine I. I didn't I didn't feel like subtly they were picking on billy price. Look I, don't know his billy a fourteen game starter at garden ously consistent starter I maybe not. But I think he's a nice backup plan and certainly at least Xavier sue a fellow. So I'm okay with some of the debt but you're right yeah if you if you go to Johnson and To, go back to bobby heart, it's almost like well, you have to wait until next year to address that need and they probably will anyway but it doesn't bode well for for this year. If you need one of them can work out author training camp ball I read is everybody slobbering over Auden tate and he's the reason why T- Higgins can't do anything and then the game comes and neither guys is much a part of what they did why not. I'm trying to find out what t higgins skillset is at this point that sounds damning doesn't it for a second round pick pick in the draft I don't see dynamic speed I. He's got size obviously easby's. Flashed a couple of times in camp but he just kinda looked like a guy running around like a chicken with his head chopped off the other day and really was never I. Mean I. Think he took fifteen snaps Mojo in I don't remember a target his way or even close to being targeted his way and it's also game one for a guy who was hurting camp at no preseason games I'm trying to trying to give benefit of the doubt and I think it's it's there just still trying to figure out what what is Lane skillset and and I don't know what it is to be quite frank. You've had a couple of days to do some sleuthing. Have we determined which randy bullock's legs he hurt Oh five of them. Are are are you see this is this game is supposed to be about versus borough. His leg. That's his pride leg. Yes. This game is also supposed to be all about Baker versus borough, but there's now so many different. Kicking storylines that this is taken front and center stage. Yeah and it's funny when I wrote wrote that as one of my three takeaways from the game of bullock missing an in of just him addressing it and I actually woke up the next day and I'm watching a highlight and I've seen each down for like White Catholic. I left calf. Weight. Even he said, less, cap. Left gaps. So I I almost put me I blow that. Did I make a bad mistake and wrong leg and then you see on the Monday. In her report cavs plural which I've never seen in my life on injury I've seen everything buttocks you name it I've not seen cavs plural. Yeah plural. So if he's shanks one tomorrow night I, just I'm just going to sit and watch what the what dimensions are. That's that's going to be another going to contribute because there's there's going to be far better word poets than me. Saying funny things about that I hope it doesn't happen but but but God, help us and God help Randy if it does. Go down like a sniper shot him I. Think I can. Read Richard Local twelve dot com skinny podcast available as well, and he is on twitter at local twelve skinny the angry quarterbacks podcast as well with Richard Tony and James Dean appreciate it as always many. Thanks so much take care of he twenty-six away from six o'clock the big ten is going to play football. We'll spend a few minutes on that. We have a red starting lineup in. I love the way the reds are playing I like the fact that there are in playing in meaningful games. There's. Dependent pennant fever or we? During a pennant race. But I can't help. But wonder what if all explain next? You've been listening to football in the neck on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official Oma bengals. Gets the ball for the reds tonight. Doing some scoreboard watching tonight the last time I know the answer to this question two, thousand, thirteen last time we did some scoreboard watching well. They're headed to the bottom of the second inning in Milwaukee first game of a doubleheader between the reds between the reds between the cardinals and the brewers and Milwaukee leads that gained custom Jairo with a home run his thirteenth season Milwaukee with a two one lead over Cincinnati as they had to bottom of to remember those games chances are you know this? Those are seven inning games. Meanwhile the reds assigned to the alternate training site two, thousand and Twenty First Round Pick Austin Hendrick spring training schedule came out today the reds will open up the Cactus League on February the twenty seventh against the Indians in Goodyear. The BENGALS INJURY REPORT No Gino Atkins he's Sean Williams out Xavier sue a feel already knew about that he went on I r this week he is out. Mike, Daniels Out bengals traveling to Cleveland Eight twenty tomorrow you can hear the game live on ESPN fifteen thirty. You can hear Bengals game plan six to eight tonight with Dan and Dave. LAPHAM ON ESPN thirty as well in the big ten. is going to play football. I've seen this they're going to start October twenty, third twenty four. I'm glad the big ten is playing I. Know There's some UC fans who have decided to look through the Lens of well now, there's one more power five league. That's GONNA play. So now you see the College Football playoff I'll I'll worry about that if you eleven or no and I do think there'll be some good debates and good discussions about the inequality of maybe one team losing a game that goes eight and one. Assuming they win the conference championship in a League like the big ten versus a school in the AFC that goes ten in one even goes undefeated. I think those are going to be good discussions to have from a UC perspective I gotta be honest with you. I just I. I'd rather see the season unfold for a while before I even start to worry about that. But the easy criticism that a lot of people have made is up see the big ten they grabbed the bag. Yes, they did. So did the American Athletic Conference. So I I let let's be. Let's be completely honest about this. Okay. If, money's not a consideration. Here is our. College football's not happening like. It is it is a huge huge huge huge huge part of why these leagues have comeback. I'm very free and willing to admit that and I want them to play I. Believe they should play I believe. especially. Given the accessibility of rapid testing and A sufficient amount of medical sciences says that myocarditis is not as much of a problem for college athletes as it was originally thought to be. Than? I'm in favor of these schools of these leagues giving the best effort to try to play. I've even seen some criticisms of the protocols which say, if you test positive twenty one days quarantined and not going to be able to play basically three weeks. Five percent. Rate of acquiring cove in nineteen means. That's where you get shut down in the big ten and I've seen some medical professionals call that excessive. But at the same time, a lot of these schools that have brought kids back to campus. And then almost instantly shutdown in classroom learning. We think they did that for. As. Much as we talk about the money involved in college athletics, the money involved in higher education. is is even bigger and more important to these schools. So okay, find there's a huge financial. Aspect to this and yes that everybody's grabbing bag and money's driving these decisions. Okay. But that doesn't mean the decisions are wrong and I believe the decision for these schools and these conferences to play is right and I say this as somebody who wants an abundance of caution taken who understands there's going to be some built in roadblocks who understands there's competitively, there's going to be inequities. We've got an equities in baseball professional sport and we're going to have some inequities and football, and it's going to be up to the people who run the College Football playoff from a competitive standpoint to to determine you know how you treat a team that plays one eight games versus how you treated team the plays, ten games, versus how you treat a team, the blaze eleven games. I'm here for those discussions but right now we're at the beginning of all this. The SEC is launching their season. The is about to have at least UC and others who haven't played yet play and the big ten is going to play and they're going to do it in an incredibly condense window no wiggle room eight Games in eight weeks it's going to be really really tough rot with challenges I think they're doing the right thing. And I know there's a lot of angles to this but I think they're I think they're doing what's right by everybody here. and. By the way I think Ryan Day was awesome and having the backs of his guys have in the back of his players and taking a leadership position. At Ohio State. So I'm happy they're playing I'm happy for campus I'm happy for people in Columbus. Happy for folks around the state who like Ohio State football. I hate to say that a sport where the Labor is free is something that should be a huge consideration when talk about actual business owners I'm happy for bar owners in Ohio who are taking it in the shorts where they can't sell a beer after ten o'clock and last week they couldn't noon. Buckeyes game. Come on. So I'm glad they're coming back I'm glad they're playing and. I'm here for all the discussions about the College Football playoff and inequities, and how many games are played by which schools and how in a school might factor in and how the bearcats factory from a UC perspective run the table eleven. Oh, that's kind of the body in for any group of five school anyway go eleven or no the championship to finish off an eleven no season, and then let's do it and talk about. Well, wait a minute in the. Big Ten conference champ went nine no AC went eleven or no. I. Think I know how that's going to go because I know who makes up the College Football playoff and I think it's also fair to wonder that for this season only can you expand the post season which a lot of people think is going to happen anyway, and you talk about expansion of a postseason that people would be here for college football would be it baseball not so much. I don't WanNa do this because the reds are surging and people feel good about them. But now's won a couple of things to buy crawl next ESPN. Fifteen thirty. I they good. Golf guest in two minutes on the US Open because I talk golf gambling today on lots of the night and said, GonNa Call Guy Cam. Rogers. And get his thoughts on it because he has a good ball podcast reds and pirates tonight. I mentioned some what if and this gets magnified in a short and season and you can't help but do this when you're in a tightly bunched pennant race, which now the reds are by the way cardinals and brewers head to the bottom of the third inning. Milwaukee holding onto a two one lead game one of a doubleheader at at Miller Park. So if the reds get to the POSTSEASON, they won't have backed in. I. Think. That's fair to say that they're they're not I. Think it's I'm comfortable saying this of their of their last ten games. If they finished three and seven, they're not going to be in the playoffs this this. Team. Back into the postseason. But if they do miss it chances are it's going to be by. Two Games maybe one. And this is where a lot of that stuff that we agonized over a little bit more over the first seven and a half weeks of the season really come to the forefront. and. You think of that that weeknight game against the cardinals were they blow a two run lead in the ninth inning. Or are you think of the Labor Day? Sunday game against the pirates were. Is. Blow Save. An Archie Bradley never comes into the game. Or the game against Kansas City in which they ended with Christian Cologne. Hitting into a double play. Or hacked for what it's worth with the third game of the year, which ends with Joey votto grounding into a double play with the tying and. Winning runs, on base. and. You just if this team doesn't get to the playoffs for me, it's going to be a lot about how these last ten games play out. But also the games that didn't go their way for whatever reason. Poor performance a bad decision something shaky that went that happened in the game player underperforming. That have put a lot of pressure on the reds down the stretch as we head into the final ten games of the season. Eight minutes away from six o'clock. Tomorrow we are the pre-game show for the bengals and the Browns Kickoff at eight twenty week it started at three Oh five pretty much wall-to-wall. bengals would do some stuff on UC football with our buddy chair rental and his normal spot fantasy football good gambling guest as well. Study from the Action Network and a guy who's making a bengals film. But not about these Cincinnati bengals everybody can Miller who has been on this show before. This is a loaded sports weekend and it's weird. We're in September the US Open. Golf. Tournament is happening my Go-to guy when it comes to golf golf gambling which I like doing cam Rogers, who is host of the Tiger Woods podcast on the believe podcast network. This is weird man a major championship in September are you used to it? I am here for it and just wait for November. A masters. You're. Serious. So I mean, it's GonNa be a fun week of Golf. There's no doubt expect plenty of carnage. These guys are going to struggle. All right. Let's let's start. Let's start with tiger with the guy that everybody cares about sort of walk me through the weekend should have in store for him. Yeah. So I mean, this is going to be an uphill climb for Tiger Woods Mo- I. Mean I would want nothing more than to be able to say on your airwaves that Tiger Woods has a chance to voice the US Open Trophy on Sunday afternoon. But I think it's going to be extremely difficult. So some contact history historically speaking from nineteen, Ninety, seven to two thousand, eight, tiger played in forty six major championships made the cut in all of them except one that won miss cut was in two thousand, six at the US Open at winged foot so. That's when he opened at seventy, six, seventy six to finish at twelve over. So some bad memories there, and then also you look at his recent form. Fifty one of the BMW championships t fifty, eight at the northern trust t thirty seven at the PGA he's making the cut he's making the weekend, but he's not really making a charge on the leaderboard. Now with all of that said, there's always an asterix next the tiger woods his name because he has surprised us before and navy he finds something today or maybe found something yesterday in his swing that. He just clicked tomorrow morning fires and good score, and then perhaps he is a factor on Sunday but he has to hit the fairway Mo- I really am worried about him hacking it out of that nick luscious vegetation that is the rough this week because that back is. A. Little bit tricky as we know. All Right, I'm just I'm just GONNA. Tell you where my money is. It's on mom takes the memorial Mir field up the road from here BMW championship a loaded field. He's ten to one like Jon Rahm, talk me out of it. Yes. So I need Jon Rahm is certainly a fantastic pick, but here's the thing. Here's my cautionary tale and I have the same logic with Dustin Johnson. We have noticed in this Tj a restart that these players are going through spurts of success. Bryson to Shambo. One example from day had four straight top ten finishes, and then the last two starts for him he's been stinking up joint I. Wonder if there's some regression to the mean coming here, Mo from Jon Rahm winning at the. Memorial, of course, and then winning at the BMW championship can really win a third time in such a short span of tournaments. So I wonder if you know in this fantastic stack field, everybody's talking about Rahm and DJ a little bit more pressure perhaps to lean in another direction Allah Tommy Fleetwood Zander's awfully or Justin. Thomas. So that is the devil's advocate for you. All right. That's the devil's advocate beyond beyond that beyond you not loving my pick Gimme value find me a long shot. Yeah. So I think there are some interesting names out there I'll give you one in particular Webb Simpson US Open champion back in two thousand, twelve. Olympic and he has this overall game that really food US Open The monitor is that after you walk off the tee, the best player in the world is Webb Simpson and actually statistically that is true. So his iron game is illegal his short game fantastic and his partner is really really solid as well. He's back grinded out of Golfer that you want number one in the field mo in terms of Bogie avoided that's pretty key at winged foot this week. So Webb Simpson is a guy I'm looking at Louis who stays as well open champion back in two thousand ten another US Open type of player loves to grind it out doesn't like the birdie-fest so much. So I like this course for him as well. Canvas has been good man thanks so much. Appreciate it take care. Can't Raja's podcast Tiger Woods podcast, which is obviously focused on tiger, but all things golf is fantastic on the believe podcast network. We appreciate his time we have to go I've got the pre game show tomorrow Bengals Brown's can't wait for that looking for listening to a bengals game plan it comes your way next. Thank you for listening. Thanks to Darren for producing. Have a great night. This is Espn Fifteen Thirty Cincinnati sport station.
5/11/21 - The Mo Egger Show
"This is paul. Dana junior and mo egger in studio talking. All things bengals and general. Nfl topics on espn fifteen thirty cincinnati. Sports station alleger. This is espn fifteen thirty. Thank you so much for listening. We are thrilled to have you here. And there's a ton to get to including a reds went last night. The road trip there on right now should should yield a bunch of victories. We have to talk about the guy that i think right now might be the most interesting. We have to talk about the guy that i hope is not derek. Dietrich two point oh jaren cumberland has spoken out to the athletic about his time. Playing for john brennan. We'll spend some time on that and a topic or two on records and one thing really quickly. And i promise you really quickly on tim tebow. But i started buddy. Paul -tainer juniors. Here's one of my favorite days of the year. The two thousand twenty one. Nfl schedule is released tomorrow night. All day long i saw. Today they're going to release the skid. The monday night football the opener on monday night football tomorrow on good morning america. So there's going to be a day long of nfl. Games being released at culminates in the eight o'clock three hour tv spectacular in which all the games will be announced. Yeah i think a lot of the networks are going to put out there week. One stuff in the mornings and then you'll get now getting work done. Yeah it's going to be hard. I mean i it is a fun it is fun. I mean i am excited about it but i don't wanna be the guy who's like. Oh come on. We already know who they play but at the same time. I'm not sitting down watching a three hour show. I can't imagine why you would do over three hours. No but i mean it's fun to yes. It's fun to to no definitive. It makes it feel like the season is getting closer yes Not a bad thing so coinciding with that. Paul has done his mock schedule all. Yeah now mock transfer one thing. Those are important but there's nothing more than a mock schedule. His two thousand and twenty one bengals mock schedule is up at the athletic dot com. There's also an extraordinarily challenging quiz the jails and quiz man. I gotta tell you. It was two nations. I j bengals with with paul. He's the master of the bengals quiz on the athletic dot com right. Yeah and they're always challenging. I am usually pretty good at them. This one useless. I got a nine thousand nine hundred fifty three this from i got eighteen hundred fifty three. Congratulations this this reminded me of like the scantron test that you take and you just didn't study or pay any attention and you're just at some point you're just kind of blindly picking your favorite letters. That's that's basically what ended up. Well it's tough so go. Check that out while you're at the athletic. In addition to paul diener. Juniors mock schedule. What goes into putting together a mock schedule actually. I'm glad you asked mario. There are certain tenants of advantageous schedule. That i stand by. That is playing a team with a new coach or new quarterback early in the season weather thing. I don't buy as much into but there are some places that teams feed off of their weather situation. I don't want to go to denver. In december they feed off snow game in denver. Like that's just there's something about that. I don't wanna go to miami. In december like they. You haven't been playing in the cold. They feed off the heat. Whatever it is. There's there's whatever it is. There's those are small portions of it this year though. I do think there is the. Hey can you find the teams. That don't have good pass rushes and play those with borough coming back. I think that's an important element this year of some of the weaker pass rushes. You would like to see early in the season why you get burrow back comfortable with his knee and your line and all of that stuff so those are some of the main things that i look in there are. There's oddities like the bengals are seven and twenty five coming out of a by and they have gotten destroyed under zac taylor. Their two games coming out of a by. Maybe just put a very undestroyed by to the game against tennessee was maybe they're high women of last season going into the bye so potentially there's but i would say maybe last meaningful game after the bye considering the history there's little oddities there and certain times you wanna play teams that have maybe a team that would have a qb controversy. Catch them about season where it's probably peak either. You're getting the new guy early or the front running guy is starting to feel it and that transition is happening. There's it's all made so. Yeah i mean there's a long chicago it's what do they do with dalton and fields. When do you get them. The aaron rodgers situation is resolved by week. One love week one. i mean how. How does that play out. I would love to play jacksonville early as you pointed out you had them playing them. We one in your mock schedule. It's the first time. Nfl head coach with the first time nfl quarterback in the team that could knock after the passer last year. I'm interested in that and look. I couldn't care less whether games are in primetime or one o'clock on sunday. I don't i. Don't it affects my life for what i do for a living because we're on before those games on thursdays and mondays but as a fan. I don't care i do think though that the amount of primetime games you get is a degree reflective of how your team is. How much interest there. How much buzz. How good they are expected to be last year. They were put in prime time. Twice cleveland early on a thursday pittsburgh late on monday night. I think given the fact that there's the afc north with free playoff teams sexy teams if you will big names in markets that are important to the nfl. I think it'll be interesting to see if they get matched up with any of those teams in primetime. There's the trevor lawrence thing. There's always patrick. Mahomes is always a candidate to play in primetime right so i i think i think we'll get a idea of sort of what the national expectation if you will is going to be for this team just based on how many games they have under the lights. That is that is it. I mean we went and jay had gone back through all the how many prime time games they'd had each year over the last ten years and you know it's reflective of who you are maybe the last few years it's been one or two. Yeah and then put back in earlier. Part of the decade was clear. Four you know and by the way it is not a rule that you have to be on prime time a couple of years ago. The bills were not right for the most part. They have tried to give everybody one but yeah it can't. It can happen where you don't in that there. I look at the schedule. And there's not a lot that makes me think any network executive is going to be like gimme that right like i think you could sell bengals chargers. I think you could sell herbert versus borough as an interesting thing. The obvious of trevor. Lawrence joe burrow. I mean these. I mean i think you can sell these things in their own way. I think you could sell bengals browns to me. That's the most appetizing of all the division games because of what those two games were last year which was entertaining. Exciting high scoring browns super. They're going to get the max time games. I would assume the bengals could attach themselves to one of those but when you get outside of that like i. It's hard to find anybody at one of these networks looking at that schedule bengals games and saying yeah that'll get us a rating all right. Here's all i care about. Okay okay. I mean you're a beat writer fan. So here's what i jotted down. Here's what i'm interested in knowing. Are you ready. Yeah wants the vegas game. That's the number one number one trip best trip. They've had in years. You don't want to open it there. You don't want to be the first game with fans in the stands in vegas. You don't wanna be that and it'll be one hundred five degrees on average right that time of year. You don't want it to happen too late because you want college football saturday in vegas. So you're kind of looking for october november in that ballpark correct. That's that's pretty big. They're playing detroit this year. I want them one year and they only go there every eight years to be the thanksgiving game. Yeah always look at. That is a possibility. Could i go to detroit on thanksgiving and root for the bangles i went there and o-5 i saw the million man march a guy screened in my face was not alliance fan and but that wasn't a thanksgiving game. It was just like a sunday four pm. Or i want to thanksgiving game in detroit. It's driveable hell. It's the twelve thirty kick. you could drive up there. Watch the game you come back and have dinner like eight o'clock absolutely turkey. You're good to go. It would be great to to be a part. I would love. I've never. I've never recovered or or really been part of anything related to the thanksgiving day played the jets and ten when it got the jonathan wade game. They got smoked twenty six ten. Yep when's the chicago game because the bearcats play at south bend october the second with a great you know in two thousand thirteen they played out illinois lost and then the bengals played at chicago week. One lost raymond. Luga body slammed dude and they lost by eight points. That's a good pairing and then south bend in chicago could be a good pairing. Its early enough that it's not going to be frozen in chicago. Could that be a possibility. Love that i mean. There's a couple of games denver denver. I don't wanna see late just because we've gone to denver a couple of times and it's always seemed to be like denver is beautiful and i want to catch it early in the season. It's one of my favorite cities to ever go to. But i'm always so cold there and i just want to go there at a time. You gotta get there real early in the season where it's not going to be so cold you can really enjoy denver for the beautiful city that it is maybe out a little bit Chicago same way love chicago. Don't wanna be there in december. Obviously and it's a drive. I don't wanna be dealing with the drive and and all that stuff. So i'm totally on board to get denver chicago off the bed early. Put vegas there in that. Like you said october november range. Those are the those are three of the best trips. The new york is great as well. The only thing is for me stinks there in jersey like and i stay. There's just fly right in out there and stay out there and go to cover the game out there and come home so i don't really get to enjoy new york a fan's perspective. New york is obviously an incredible trip. As far as you get to go do new york city if you wanna do that thing but those those are some really high end. Nfl weekend travel sites that that that you get this year. So there's those definitely wants to watch. The i would say is when the packers are here. Because obviously you know. You don't know what's going to happen with. Aaron rodgers has an incredible fan base. And so the last two times. They've been here especially two thousand thirteen. They were here october fest weekend. Which october fest. Weekend this year the reds are home to the bengals. Aren't going to be. But they were here in two thousand thirteen. October fest weekend. I went to the holy grail at three thirty on saturday to watch the bearcats play miami which i could not go to because i had to go to a wedding that night. So i'm gonna go down and watch the first half of the game. And the place was flooded with folks from wisconsin there to watch the badgers and it was a blast and that i want to be inundated. What is it a cool weekend with. Maybe the badgers are playing. You go somewhere and hang out with a bunch of cheese heads who were all really friendly into watch. Their team hopefully lose the next day and good for the local economy of every body. -solutely was show up with one agenda and that is to watch the badgers and drink to excess. But i mean you know you're right the the packers thing you want that game as early as possible. Yes i mean. Look at the very least. The aaron rodgers dissension is gonna hang over the early portion of the seas. Coomer oh come back and then you honor kumar. Oh before the game. I think you maybe put him in the ring longer. Rule justice way justice a way to really get under aaron skin. You bring back you. Honor him with a video of all his training camp in. Ot highlights when he was a bengal talk have former teammates. Come talk about how great he was. I don't see any other. I mean it's the perfect we tell you something. There's there's a lot of talk shows around the country and there's there's a lot of segments in which the talk show host chats with the local beat writer. Nobody is going to do thirteen minutes on the schedule of what you just heard. Okay well no one. No one's gonna do thirteen of some of its self serving admittedly. No one's going to do better thirteen minutes on a schedule. That's gonna come out tomorrow in which we already know who they are going to play and where they're going to play which includes a capital of a. Oh hot take no one's giving you kumara hot tag and the nfl's i i guess it's not. The first eighteen weeks scheduled the first seventeen game schedule. And i'm still having a hard time really wrapping my brain around that. Yeah i'm telling you. I'm not going to be not going to be good when a team goes twelve and five. I'm gonna struggle with his. Well is ten and seven going to be good enough to. They have to go eleven and six president. Yeah my entire life. Attendance sixteen was probably a playoff team. Now is ten and seventeen playoff team. I don't know. I don't know i don't know it all that. Is maybe the most intriguing thing about this season eighteen minutes after three o'clock. He's paul dan junior. He's on twitter at paul dana junior. He's here till four. I am here till six. You mentioned the ring of honor. You mentioned the ring of now. The the ballot came out last week. Oh yeah we have to peruse the ballot. You're gonna see if you're on board with me telling people who to vote for but actually do have a question about this football team this year okay. It's a question involving a topic that nobody is really talked about for months. It's about the defense. Oh yeah are they going to have one you have. It's not the boroughs. When he's on the sideline oh they have the eleven dudes. Try to stop the other team from scoring okay against them. Pretty damn good offenses questions about. I've waited till may wanna talk with you about the defense. Okay yeah for three this roster fifteen thirty cincinnati sports station twenty three minutes after three. This is espn fifty thirty. Paul dana junior who covers the bengals for the atlantic. He has a podcast with j. Morrison here that podcast. Also if you go to the athletic today there is a good. Qna that justice williams did with jerry cumberland the former bearcat about his season playing under john brennan at the university of cincinnati. Read that and we will talk about that. Coming up at at four twenty. We've spent three months debating the merits of offensive line versus wide receiver in the draft. Talking about what the ceiling for joe burrow in this unit could be how they're going to protect him and meanwhile the bulk of their activity in free agency was on the other side of the football and it felt like once you know they they shuffle the pieces around there and they said goodbye to kara lawson. We've spent zero time talking about what they do on defense and so there's two approaches actually three first of all even a folks are seemingly split on what the bengals did in the first round. Everybody seems to love. Josefa si- Everybody seems to like that pick. And so that's intriguing to me the other one for me isn't i read the transaction of christian covington leaving. He's not going to be with the bengals anymore and they're still like room for three technique on this absolutely. I think the backup to area gone job in that. Three technique is sitting wide. I mean there. There's a lot of vets dudes out there. Yeah it's a lot of the guys out there. I mean sheldon richardson out. There drill casey's out there even gino atkins's out there we. There's there's a number of different guys that could come in and very and fill that role very well. I mean it would be fit for them. I mean it seems perfectly fit will. We'll see what becomes of that over the next coming months. And i would anticipate in addition there and then i know this is on on the offensive side. Obviously they did. They didn't hit the daleks erickson role. They missed on that. And i think there's been you know the reports of them in discussions with dede westbrook and so a guy who would be a punt returner and your backup. Tyler boyd is still hanging out there to outside of that. They checked a lot of boxes. You mentioned the pick. I wanna talk about that for a second. Because not just that camp sample in. And they love white hubert. They really felt lucky to get him in the seventh round. And i know everybody says that about their late picks but the common thread. And i wrote about this in the behind. The scenes story last week was they felt there was Clearly lacking the relentlessness they want to be their identity on defense and that was a common thread in all of these guys. They want a defensive line that just every down no matter what just keeps coming keeps coming and is noted for that. Maybe there's some other things that those guys might lack a little bit that you can maybe teach but the the relentlessness of this defense is what they want to be. The stamp and that is i mean aside. You can't get anybody at texas to start. A conversation that doesn't start with motor work ethic relentlessly. All they talk about with him and he's just it's trying to build a team of eleven sam hubbard's love that noted for that. Your favorite thing. That you know like sam hubbard as much as you but i like upper. But they love the way sam. Hover plays football and understandably so yes. And and that is the same thing that you hear about asai that you hear about cam sample and you hear about hubert a and if they can build a defensive line full that then that can be a big deal for them on a team that just did not have enough of any of that upfront last year. So the blueprint seems to be. We're just going to try to be as good on offense as we can be and just hope the defense is okay. And that's what the league is doing right now. You and i talked about that last week but when the ceiling is okay the floors awful and that's that's got to be talked about. That's the part that worries me. Especially if you've talked about some of the quarterbacks they're supposed to play this year and look. You could still win outs. You can win forty nine forty two that that sticks in the back of my mind that i understand why they did almost everything they did on defense and i certainly understand the priority of. Let's let's try to throw the football and do what we can't make sure that's good and then down the road. We'll we'll we'll fix the defense or make it better but in the short term if the ceiling is okay i think at best you would think the bengals could be somewhere in the middle of the pack on defense if we were just to go by. Nfl rankings right but if the ceiling is okay. The floors terrible in the floor concerns me. I'm sorry i not supposed to talk like that in may but that concern. No i think you know you look at linebacker and because we don't do enough of this year bemoaning never been done this before. It's is built on hope. It is built on development. That is things that we have not seen yet partially because you guys are talking about our rookies. The thing you can count on most of the linebacker rooms. What logan wilson who had a very nice rookie showed some flashes. But he still a young unproven a difference for you. I mean that's what he's going to have to germain. Pratt is entering three. He's had a lot of snaps and has not become the force that you hoped he would be maybe he does take a step and maybe that was partially because they're defensive line was so pewter last year that doesn't matter you don't even see the linebackers that's part of it. You know david gaither. I mean he basically got scaled back as they started going. He wasn't quite ready. And maybe he will be better to in your to and i think you see that line. But that's i mean that's still sitting there kind of as a gaping hole. Even though i think you can feel very positive about where. They're out on their defensive line. Now i think getting anything out of the three technique position this year's advantage with ogan jobe and they have have depth that they did not have their last year and that's good. I think the secondary will be good. I think there's enough good players back there that they have depth and enough talent they don't have the high end one quantity over quality. They're okay there. I'm not really concerned and i think. Hse betas great bates. Bateson bell will be part of your force their your. There's definitely the chance for it to blow up in. Yeah i mean. But that's that's the way they're going to be constructed until they can get more reinforcements in their. I three thirty on. Espn fifteen thirty. I'm he's paul dana junior a lot more to get to. I need you to weigh in on a poll question that i had yesterday involving two former bengals okay. Speaking of former bengals the ring of honor. And i know you're not tired of talking about the ring of honor. The ballot came out of the seventeen. Dudes this is painfully obvious. I need you to agree with me. Okay in this regard him. A big fan of group think we also have news on amir garrett suspension next on. Espn fifteen thirty days. A service of kelsey chevrolet home of lifetime powertrain protection and guaranteed credit approval from their family to yours for life kelsey chef comrades and pirates again tonight after cincinnati hung fourteen on the bucks last night. Jeff hoffman gets the ball against jt. Brubaker six thirty five tonight. On seven hundred wwl w amir garrett suspension has been reduced from seven games to five. I'm still not sure why he was suspended. For five games nonetheless reds will have an eight-man bullpen and a twenty five player. Roster starting tonight which is when a mere will begin his suspension. Twenty five minutes away from four o'clock. Espn fifteen thirty am allegra paul. Diener junior from the f. The athletic is here. The bengals ring of honor. and now. you're not tired of talking about it. No it's okay. Still one of your favorite things. I would. This is a negative about the reason. This is the fun part. This isn't why don't they one. Now they released the ballot. Seventeen players know former coaches on it. Seventeen players season ticket holders can vote for two were. Were you surprised by. The composition of the ballot was anybody who has left off. Was anybody on it. Whose inclusion was a little surprising to you know. Actually that was one of those where i peruse it. Everybody i saw there for the most part made sense. There was nobody. I mean it all the names that we have been talking about were represented I had very very little problem with the ballot. You feel like they let somebody know. I didn't feel like they left anybody out. I did think it was interesting that they limited to players know forrest gregg or no sam. Wash yeah i think that's one way that they can steer it. Yes swin their allow coaches to equation agreed to so mission. No that was interesting to me that both figures neither figure was included. And you know what the other thing. I mean it allow things doing it. This way allows them to steer it however they want to they they one year feel like they really wanna make sure. It ends up being players from the seventies and eighties. They can do that. They can make the ballot all seventies and eighties players so chose to and i think that's nice to have that type of thing to do however you would wanna do it and you can make categories and say. Hey you're going to vote for one guy from the seventies yes in the eighties and so forth right. There's a lot of different ways to do it. And and it does. Give them some flexibility. I do not have a problem with it. Who am i supposed to say that you two cans right and we don't tell people who to vote for set now. Yes it's obvious. I think so. I mean when you look stupid ken. anderson's not in the first class can interesting. I mean to me. That's not even. I think you could make. I've made the argument of chad over ken riley but i do think considering the circumstances of all of this and the need to honor ken riley being so overdue i think as a vote it would be where my vote would go and look i mean can this organization honor any more than it already is on a daily basis correct. I mean and deservedly. So he's he's a center piece of of what they still are organizationally to be honest. And that's fine. Ken riley deserves and his family deserves it and they deserve to have that weekend in and i'm totally on board with you that that's that to me. That is an an obvious one. The next ballot will be a fun one to go down to depending on how many i guess it ends up being. It's four again right. Yeah i think you get into some fun conversation but these need to be out of the way. Yes these needs to be done and finished you. I mean i just i'm with you. I find it hard. To believe that ken anderson would not be included in the first class but given the fact that they in everybody else's made a big deal about how his his pro football hall of fame inclusion or exclusion is egregious. You can't then say well. Here's our ring of honor at starting. Ken you're going to have to wait one more. You can't do that and to a degree. You can't do it with ken riley either. I mean those to me will andersen obviously has a very strong hall of fame case. You and i have talked about that. There are others but the two strongest right now seem to be the two cans and you can't exclude them a based on a lotteries since but that's on the list and the two longest lasting exclusions. Willie they're still you know these deserved and there's still a chance that that he can get in and there's a lot on the plate there with the normal committee but this is so long lasting so long overdue. It's such a big part of things they need to make up for by doing the ring of honor that i. I think that when you're casting your vote that makes the most sense in terms of what. This is speaking of chad johnson. He is going to be a very big part of a major televise. This thing going to be televised televised sporting events. Where he's gonna fight somebody. We don't know who this is giving me flashbacks to win. You covered had to cover a team that had shed on it and you have to be in the business of following his off the field activities. The horse now. He's he's racing horses. He's like playing with a soccer team riding a bull like horse refreshing. He doors he beat the horse doors and the soccer thing had that workout club case sporting. Kc he wrote a bowl. I think he did ride a bowl audible. I believe he roadway rhode. Well now he's gonna fight. But it's not gonna be against adam jones but i wish it was and i've oppo question about this and so i need you to break this down. Okay okay. this is part of part of your duty to seminal bengals figures. I'm happy to skirt this. I'm right here. The f. ask it like the pro football writers association of america. You can't just throw this no. This is senior under doing. We have to get to a break first off. It's nineteen minutes away from four o'clock. He's pulling junior allegra. This is espn fifteen thirty. Cincinnati sports station. Two minutes away from five o'clock this from four o'clock this is espn fifteen thirty acre brennaman and jones baseball. Think in just over one hour. We'll jump into the the latest on john. Brennan and uc which comes from jaren cumberland via the athletics that at four twenty and Thoughts on the reds. After a win last night the it back to five hundred coming up at four or five. I neglected to do my duty here. The bengals paul. Junior covers the bengals for the athletic joins us every single tuesday for an hour except for next tuesday. When i'm taking off. Would you care to give us a preview of this. Weekend's bengals rookie minicamp. My name is insert rookie here. I went to hero yeah. I'm marie from that thing. Hey you wanna go on the field and hang out for a couple of hours. Yeah sounds good. That's it that's it. That's basically would they play books. I think we play books. I think there will be lots of potential fist. Bumps maybe maybe a little bit of running around yeah But probably not much of that. Yeah i mean. I don't think it's gonna this is not going to be life orientational more than many guys they it's orientation. There's going to be some on field trips and stuff like that. There's a ropes. Course i think you know it's it's not going to be very intense one day rookie minicamp one day long. Do not anticipate it being a very long full weekend when doctrinaire guys to the nfl one day and then bam here we go. The scene has changed quite a bit. Don't care but the offseason has changed quite a bit in recent years. I wanted to you to be able to full coverage of rookie. Minicamp in the athletic. So i i mentioned this to you before the break as part of this floyd mayweather logan. Paul are you following this. A little floyd mayweather is hall of fame boxer. Floyd with he's to be fighting. This guy logan paul. now i had. I made a confession yesterday that until yesterday. I thought logan paul jake. Paul were the same person they're not. They're both youtube sensations. Do you have a favorite youtube sensation. Who's the kid who unpacked all the kids toys and found a way to make thirty hours that tour ryan. Yeah a dudes the bane of my existence. I'm not saying. I like him. But i'm pretty impressed that he was able to make like man that dude back guy so anyway. Logan paul is a youtube sensation. He is going to participate in a boxing match at hard rock stadium in miami in a couple of weeks. They're going to go toe to toe. This is a huge momentous boxing event. Will you be paying attention to know i still. I still don't like floyd mayweather for all the years. He ducked manny pacquiao. Okay autumn when he was his prime that was the strategy. So we wouldn't lose. And that's that's fine. I don't like floyd mayweather. Because he's an awful human being. That's also part of the equation. But that's when. I sort of caring about the boxing element. Yeah you know. I mean that was back in the ring against logan paul guy okay tube sensation When this happens there's going to be an undercard and chad. Johnson is has agreed to fight on the undercard which is going to be great now. We don't know who he's gonna fight but he's gonna fight somebody as part of the undercard logan paul. Maybe maybe he's fighting. Jake paul. i dunno. But chad johnson is gonna box so according to profootballtalk dot com chad johnson and former bengals cornerback. Pacman jones were in talks to fight per a source with knowledge of the situation. However it's currently not happening per the source johnson. Who has agreed to be on the card. He's gonna fight. Somebody flatly refused to fight jones. Now adam jones still could end up being on the card. He could also show up at the event and fight somebody. Because that's what happens. Whenever adam jones shows up anywhere fight happened. So it you know. You don't need a sanction. 'bout for there to be adam jones fight but he may show up on this card but it intriguing to me so i asked a poll question yesterday. If this were to happen. Chad johnson versus adam jones. Who would you put your money on sixty six percent. Say they would put their money on adam. Jones where would you put your money. Probably on adam jones. I mean he's a little more comfortable fighting. Yeah yeah and. I don't think. I just chad is in this chat as the market Right i think adam is the fighter. Yeah okay so. I don't typically. You're going to see the fighter beat the marketer I don't i mean there's a difference now between boxing where there's like a ring and a timer and a referee and beaten some dude up on the street or thrown hands on the airport when the guy comes up to you like adam jones did and had every reason to beat the hell out of that guy. Yeah there's a difference between a street fight or a bar brawl and a sanction boxing match. Not in this case is out here like a technician. I'm assuming that he'll be doing some basics of boxing for a little bit and then they'll just devolve it'd be embarrassing for both. Oh no yeah. I mean at this is. We're not exactly. Talking ali frazier. This isn't they shouldn't even allow you to bet on the list of sporting events you can be proud of having just watched this is not on the list you feel like you need a bath when this whole thing is over. And that's that's not even considering the fact that these guys aren't gonna fight each other. They were. I would be here for. I have no interest in floyd mayweather vs logan. I don't know who logan paul is. I don't care he's not interesting to me. i don't know who he is. So there's no back story here. The compels me to watch these two guys fight but if you sold me. Chad versus pacman. I'm not gonna pretend. I'm above that i'm not gonna look down my nose and be on my high horse like. Oh my god. I i would. I would instantly pay for that. You would pay for it. I mean okay. I would watch it if it was on yeah. I don't know that. I'm i don't know that i'm paying but you but i have an interest in the outcome and ultimately watching it after somebody else had paid for it yes i try to piggyback with every pay per view event. It's like you got that on. Yeah what if. I just stop upbringing. A six pack. I'm gonna do that deal. I'm not doing that for floyd mayweather in this youtube. Dude adam jones and channel. Joe cinco in sign me up. Let's go yeah. I kind of like we were talking about four off air little bit late so recipes kimba slice and you wanna talk about like what i i'm interested. I will see one of those guys. Go up against somebody. Who's a real brawler like. Let's let's see what that actually looks like watching. The two of them against each is like i dunno. It's kind of this guy. That would show up people's backyards and just beat the snot out of him and then they tried to get into. That didn't go so well for not as well. No no no but he was still. He was a fun youtube sensation. Oh yes. I take with the inspiration for the paul brothers of youtube. That's what that's the first time i ever watched like. What are we doing. We're watching youtube. Okay why well. Here's a guy that's going to beat up some dude in his backyard. That's kinda cool. What else is on there. I can watch old reds games oak. Well wait a minute. I want to know more about this. So wait a minute. This guy was inspired by kimbe slices. Logan aren't they isn't every youtube. Fighter inspired by kimble's license on. Well i don't know a lot about the world. Vitamin he was just kimba was the trailblazer. Yeah he was yeah. He wasn't the armstrong. If you will. Armstrong of due to backyard fighting does chatter or adam jones. Do any of that on the youtube they have. I don't know this is not a world that i usually dabbling. I gotta tell you. I try to keep my eyes off at adam jones's videos whether it's on instagram. Or what does he do on. I've i stopped following the social media. I know he was complaining about zac. Taylor lassie's now it's just any number of things. He's got his east promoting his businesses for the most part pizza. Place pizza place. He's pretty good. Yeah he's he's he's basically it seems like he's selling. I don't know if it's legal weed or and then he's got his training facility that he's that he's open now that he's dead he's doing. Yeah i'm not. I'm not sure exactly but there's a lot of that. So he's got a lot of that and then chad jet does everything. It's everything it's hard not to watch. Because he's he's always out there all right. My money's on amazon jerry johnson. N- okay. I just i feel like in the fictional fight factional fight. It's not gonna happen but could you tell me these guys. If you didn't like sweet the pot and make it worth their. While they wouldn't do it i would i. Would i would change the opening fight. Do we know who is fighting. So the first how many fights are in this event taryn four. Change the opening fight. Pick somebody out of stands win a raffle so tune in and watch chad johnson. Fight somebody well. That'd be entertaining. My money would be on chad. Because i feel like if he could just get through adam jones's typically in these fights but they're not long fights usually get broken up by the police in others. There's just so if you could survive. The first ninety seconds chad would be golden. Yeah no i don't see that's have you ever ever watched people a couple of people that have never actually really fought in a boxing match before fight. Seen on the meanest man competitions at stricker's grove. Right i've seen talk about needing a bath after. I've seen some of these before and actually my early days when i worked in key west and boxing is really big down there and they were on friday night fights and everything and they would have pretty big events but a lot of times the undercard would be just that some local dude who wants to get into the game who's a local fire and everybody can come out and cheer for the knicks. Have no idea the amount of lake conditioning. It really takes when you get out there and they pass out in the ring. After about sixty seconds it's it becomes. It becomes quite awful. Kinda sad to watch but i mean that's what would happen the it would just be both these guys eventually sitting down two minutes in. I think even as good a shape as either. Maybe yeah yeah. I feel like the athletic should dispatch you. Maybe need to to a meanest man competition. By the way of johnson's the first fight of the night that's like the under under undercard who's and fights two and three floyd mayweather vs does youtube guy. Do we know who's in the second and third. Are they actual boxers. So you got some boxers. Fight against other boxers but the former world champions but the night is going to start with chad johnson fighting. Ta yeah you know where they should send us is to that strongest man competition. They would show on fox sports even beer the beer beer kegs over the walls and those always like in stockholm or something right. Well this is important and it's on it's on local fox. I went scott. Sloan down the hall one day so this is like fifteen years ago. He's like hey. I'm going to be a celebrity judge in a meanest man competition. You want to go with me. Yes one hundred percent. The beers were a dollar and we sat right there right on the ring right. And it's just like random guys beating the crap out of each other for forty five seconds and i'm sitting there minding my own business and i'm holding a cup of beer and let's just say that bodily fluid landed in my beer and i looked at scott and i said i you know what i've seen it. I've done it. I'm here you judge the rest. I'll be out the car. Yeah zip. Stricker's grove yeah. If you're going to sit close you've got to know that there's a good chance of some sort of body fluids going to end up near drink. It's not good all right. The poll question by the way is still up at fifteen. Thirty paul's mock schedule is out at the athletic dot com pick. It's it's it's really really big. You can check that out before this release tomorrow. I wrote about football this. We look so you did. I enjoy tried to write about something. Pseudo thi- i liked it. I liked it actually. Well all right. We'll see in two weeks. Sounds good. i'm not here next. I mean you could show up. But i will not shot her birthday. Yes happy birthday to her reds win last night will make some sense of that next. Oh guess what their news. Guess what taco tuesday. It's not say what's taylor's going down to my house. I'm really excited. I make best spaghetti sauce. I make it the night before it sits all day. I eat it the next night know what i was doing last night about eleven thirty myself tacos in my house on tuesday. Nobody cares about that can afternoon on mo egger and this. Espn fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening. You're not gonna believe what major league baseball has done. I'll tell you in thirty minutes. Plus couple of thoughts and questions on jaren cumberland's conversation that he had with the athletic about his time playing for john brennan in the conversations about a lot of different things justin williams. Who's awesome the ohio. Sportswriter of the year chatting with jaren coming about his life post you see and where things are headed within professionally. And but they really do. Deep dive into some of the issues that were sort of bubbling to the surface. All throughout jerry's one season playing for john brennan at uc and that's become relevant given the events of the last couple of weeks with the ucla basketball program. So we'll spend some time on that coming up in just about fifteen minutes. Last night was was fun. Last night was necessary. I said this when the red swept the pirates in the first week of the season. But i've seen what happens when the reds early in the year can't beat a bad team. It was called two thousand nineteen the reds season. Which a lot of people had high hopes for was torpedoed within its first week and a half because the reds couldn't beat a pittsburgh pirates team that was dreadful that year in two thousand and nineteen the pittsburgh pirates lost ninety three games. They finished in dead last by six games. The reds went in two thousand nineteen at least with pseudo hopes of contending for something meaningful. Within the first week and a half of the season they were off to a one eight start the last four of those eight losses came against the pittsburgh pirates. So you can roll your eyes at all. Yeah big deal. It's pittsburgh who cares. It's the pirates. So what beat somebody decent. It is worth pointing out as much as the dodgers have struggled. Recently this little bounceback. Since the seven game losing streak did begin with series win on the road against against los angeles but if this team is going to contend and that's a big big if if they're going to contend i've maintained all along that the winner of this division is going to be whoever plays best against the pirates and chances are everybody's gonna win more than they lose against pittsburgh which team wins an inordinate number of games against the team that is destined in all likelihood to finish in last place can the reds clean up against the pirates. So far the answer has been yes fourteen to one last night. The hit parade started early and pretty much. Everybody got involved and it was a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun to watch the reds cruise for team that we've talked often this year about their small margin for error. It was fun to watch them cruise to an easy victory last night. They gave a lot of runs to tyler valley and pretty much everybody who had a bad in their hand contributed tyler seguin whose ascension has been a lot of fun. He went deep last night. Are you haney your suarez. You talk about somebody who's got to get going at some point. He went deep last night. Tucker barnhart who's ofensive improvement has been one of the more fun and surprising storylines of the season. He had a couple of hits. He drove in a couple of runs. Nixon zell had a couple of hits and he drove in three. Everybody contributed including time ali with the bat. He wasn't exactly pitch efficient with his arm last night. But he was given plenty of runs and he turn things over to the bullpen. By the way it's worth pointing out amir garrett did pitch last night and it was his fourth straight scoreless outing if you didn't hear his seven game. Suspension has been reduced to five games still idiotic that he's been given even one game so you gotta beat up on the bad teams. Which is why this week. I think is important to more in pittsburgh tonight and tomorrow and then four against the rockies. Who if you haven't seen are predictably dreadful the colorado rockies own the worst record in the national league this is an opportunity to pile up wins against a couple of really bad teams. Let's see if they can do it. One of the interesting things. Though last night shogo akiyama did not play. He did not start and you know we talked a lot about what the red should do in the infield who they should move to third who they should move to. I and a lot of that was based on. We'll show goes gonna come back in you can take l. and put up at second base. Shogo akiyama is again not in the starting lineup tonight. And that is less of an indictment against him and more of a statement about how good tyler has been tyler. Seguin has been a savior for this team. I mean when the year started. Was anybody talking about tyler. Seguin being anything other than just bench filler. And yet here. He is with an opium of nine forty three which is third on the team. The team he's second on the team in homers. Say which one about these statistic of rb is but he leads the team. Rbi's right now. He's been finding the field. He's been better than anybody ever could have expected with the bat. It has made some wonder what's going to happen with shogo. Akiyama shocking is fascinating for me for a couple of different reasons. The first of which is the fact that the guy who wanted shogo here the guy who worked hardest to get shogo here is himself no longer here or at least working for the reds mcwilliams. Shogo akiyama was in many respects. Dick williams pet project. He's not here anymore. I wonder if the organization was structured now or structured. The way it is now year and a half ago. I wonder if they throw twenty one million bucks at shogo akiyama by the way last year. You got the sense. That david bell wasn't entirely on board with the idea that this guy was going to be a cornerstone because he didn't play that often against lefties a couple of other dynamics here not the least of which is the fact that over the last three weeks of the season last year this team took off and for my money at least the number one reason why was shogo getting on base at started right around september the tenth and for three weeks he was on base nearly half the time he came to the plate. It helped remake this team. There were other reasons why they won. A bunch of games that to me leads the list at the same time. It's always appear that the reds don't really value him as a guy who's gonna play every single day against lefties every single day against righties lefties. He is a plus defender. This team could certainly use plus defenders. He also doesn't hit the ball that hard and right now there's nowhere to put them. He's not going to play the infield. You're not not gonna play tyler seguin. You're obviously not knocking to play. Jesse winker nicotiana. Shogo is kind of odd man out. Here's the part that. I would caution you against though and this has nothing against the acquisition of tyler. Seguin or what he himself has done to this point. Sometimes a guy will get off to a hot start at it will trigger conversations about well. What do you do with player x. Or does this make player. Why expendable i am enjoying the hell out of tyler. Seguin right now and if you're a reds fan. I'm sure you are too. Can you imagine where this team would be without him. But i'm always a little cautious of falling for what a guy is doing early and assuming that's going to persist two years ago at this time. I don't know that there was a more popular. Cincinnati red than derek. Dietrich remember that the derek dietrich show which was a lot of fun. And i've said this thousand times that one of the most fun things about baseball is hell quite organically fan favorites. Just seem to pop up and two years ago. Derek dietrich has a fan favourite popped up and it was awesome that for a while he really kind of helped carry the offense and in the month of may the dude just was raking home runs at an unforeseen pace. He had three and one game in late may and he was a tough out. His opie as at the end of the month was well above one thousand and then he almost completely fell off the face of the earth from june first until the end of the season which did include a stint on the injured list. Derek teacher hit one seventeen. But if i would have said you may thirty first that year. What do you do it derek. Dietrich oh well you got to figure out a way to plan somewhere. You gotta figure out a way to sign a long term. I mean those conversations. I heard and to a degree. Turn down some of those conversations. I don't want to say that. Tyler nick wins like derek. Dietrich tyler seguin had a year in cleveland in two thousand sixteen in which he finished third in the american league rookie of the year voting had a very productive season. And since then has he's been a bench player he's been a fourth outfielder he's dealt with injuries. He's gone down to the minor leagues. His career is at seven eighty. Two what he's doing this year is one hundred and sixty points higher man. It would be awesome if that was sustainable. I've seen enough guys come up and have a killer first month six weeks to two and a half months and then watch their productivity not just decline a little bit totally fall off the table. I've seen that happen enough. That i'm not a huge fan of making these big picture. Proclamations about who player who should be traded. Who should nocco so at some point. A lock is going to get a chance to play at some point. Chances are shogo. Akiyama is going to get a chance to really show what he can do. At some point. It's gonna make all the sense in the world for him to play. The question there is can he can hit against. Lefties is going to be the guy that we saw over the first six weeks of the season last year or the guy that we saw over. The last three weeks of the season last year is going to be a guy who makes harder contact. Can he be on base percentage machine. And how much of a chance are they going to give him. Given the fact that the guy who's not here anymore is the guy who brought him to cincinnati. But the tyler seguin thing. I'm going to enjoy this wallet last and it will get to a point. You hope where you go okay. This is who he is. I'm not saying that. On may the eleventh. I've seen enough of these. I've fallen in love with scooter. Genetics and jeff jurors and and derek dietrich's and these guys who do a lot in a short amount of time and then in a year they're forgotten. Maybe that's not tyler seguin. But i need more than just six weeks before we talk about. Who else is expendable who they're going to trade and why they wasted their money on shogo akiyama sixteen after four. You know who. We're not hearing from well. The answer to that question is no longer jaren cumberland. But i'll tell you who are not hearing from and with each passing day it's striking on. Espn fifteen thirty. Cincinnati sport station. If you go to my twitter feed atm allegra. fifteen thirty. You will see link to the justin williams of the cuna. with former bearcat jaren cumberland. Go to read it. We'll get to it in just a second but first bob is calling from florence. Bob you're on. Espn fifteen thirty. How're you how doing good man what's up. It's got back from niagara falls beautiful beautiful. What side Well you have to stay on. The americans go to canada yet cannot get him but we also visited the hall of fame of oh cooperstown. Yeah it's my second trip there. But i haven't been there about twenty years and cool cool troutman. National baseball hall of fame is phenomenal. It's a great museum in a lovely hamlet. It's just a pain in the neck to get there and no doubt about it I wanted to ask you and tearing actually inform me a little more than i knew. I knew the other day. The angels have designated albert to go there camper. Whatever now i understand. They've released him I don't know how they make it work or what they can do but he should go back to the cardinals. I mean from a sentimental standpoint. Sure from a practical standpoint if he has designs on playing every single day i don't i don't think that works i you know i don't either And maybe he still does. And i don't know maybe he could but you know my hope was always that and least in his final year would return there and I don't know my my understanding. Is they really said they were not in a position to do that right now. Or something the affect. I mean look. They've they've got a first baseman in goldschmidt. In part of it is also the timing if if this is the kind of deal where he got cut loose with five weeks left in the season. Alright does he wanna come off the bench for five weeks depending on how the race goes. Can we give them a couple of starts. It's may eleventh. The bulk of the season is in front of them. And you know look. It's a national league cardinals nationally team. There's no d. h. Slot there in the playoff race probably for most of the season. And you know there's also his his enduring memory or his enduring legacy in saint. Louis is of him having all those mvp caliber years. And say what you want about him leaving when he left. He left a world champion. Do you really want to watch him. Come back and put on a cardinals uniform and hit one seventy eight. yup definitely. Don't want that. And that's the more likely outcome. I hate to say because the dudes been phenomenal is that's right handed hitter. I've ever seen but i wouldn't want i wouldn't want to watch trying to think of a good example i wouldn't wanna watch jay bruce comeback jay. Bruce obviously not somebody of the stature of our pool halls but he just retired. I wouldn't wanna watch him. Come back here and hit one. Seventy eight and not be able to hit any home runs and not be able to. I don't wanna watch that. I saw him at his best than a reds uniform. That's what i'm always going to remember him. As if i'm a cardinal fan the more likely outcome is he can't help the team. Do i want to watch him struggle. Do i wanna watch him. He can come back and his jersey retired the put him in the hall of fame when he goes when he goes into cooperstown. He's going to go in as a cardinal. He's one of the greatest players to ever wear that uniform. He's always going to be welcome back. He got that huge standing ovation when he came back a couple of years ago. You could do all those things without watching him. Play out the string and struggle unlike he ever did while wearing a cardinals uniform. Yeah i just you know my mo- in my own mind i'm thinking. If he came back there he'd he'd hit the ball again. Probably not the way he did. You know ten years ago. But i i don't know i. Obviously he doesn't think he's done but Yeah i you may be right. I don't know. But i just. I wish there were a way to to make that happen and but anyway Good to talk to you guys again. to be back and i'll i'll keep in touch is to have you bob. Thank you so much. Twenty seven minutes after four o'clock. So this jaren cumberland thing. He talks with justin williams from the athletic and the whole q. I i've always thought this was going to be the most interesting. Get the most interesting person to speak out because he nothing to by coming out and speaking on the record and if you go back to john brennan's first year at uc. There was a lot of speculation and a lot of conjecture about the relationship between the coach and the player and how bad it was. Remember the third game of the season jaren gut benched. They had the tournament in saint thomas. Where jaren didn't play except for the very tail end of overtime and those two we heard a lot about are on the same page. Are they getting along. What's the dynamic there. Well i've always felt like that was going to be somebody that it would help to hear from as we tried to for lack of a better way of putting it piece together. What was going on. While john brennan was the head coach at uc. So just a couple of passages from this. I don't want to read all of justice content on the air but he was asked jaren was by justin. Was it strange. Being around some of the uc players these past couple of months when all of turmoil was going on in the background with brandon and the eventual coaching change and jaren says quote to be honest last year. Some of the guys were upset with the way. I was acting of what i was saying but the more i was explaining why and what they saw what was going on the more. They started realizing who brandon really was. Then they started telling me i was right. They even started asking why came back from my senior year in the first place if i could read him that good but the truth is i didn't read him that good and that's on me. A lot of people did tell me not to come back. I didn't listen asked. When did things start to go bad at least between the two of you from your perspective. He says quote jaren does quote. I had injuries. And i wasn't getting the benefit of the doubt practice. We were basically in hell. You ain't never meant hell until you've been in brands practice. Practice shouldn't be fun but fund can be letting kids play three on three five on five but we just played straight defense for three hours. You walk into practice and your whole mood changes. You don't want to be there just an jaren. You played for both mick. Cronin and john brennan with mick having a reputation for being an intense guy and people operating under the assumption his practices are grilling as well. Jared says quote cronin was an intense coach and he would make you understand and learn and well disciplined you brandon. He would try to control you. He would tell you to do this and you had to do it that way. We all watch the games. I felt like he was doing all of it for his own. Good and it continues and it. It doesn't jaren cumberland's perspective which certainly isn't favorable to a john brennan justin s. You mentioned. You didn't get a good read on him at first and we saw a lot of that even with the players recruited leaving or entering the transfer portal this past year. I have to imagine he was different during the recruiting process. Or when he was trying to get you to try to come back for your senior year and jaren says the fans couldn't see it if he told the fans this he was doing another thing. One thing people never appreciated about cronin cronin cared about the fans and made sure we went out. Every game played for the fans. Made sure we fought brandon. It was all about himself the prince. Toby situation he had heart surgery Not too long after a practice in which he reportedly collapsed. Just as what about all this that has come out about how crazy and dangerous. Some of the practices were with guys passing out. Was it that way during your senior year too. I know prince. Harry's wife tweeted about the incident that led him to getting heart surgery claiming it was due to extreme conditioning. I've heard that was a scary moment. Cumberland says quote. He was just passed out and laid out on the ground he went to the hospital and this was early in the morning. We were up like six. Am i was throwing up nonstop every workout. One time we were running on the track and one player had to make a certain time and he's trying to make it through the finish line. He's throwing up not stopping. Nothing coach wasn't worried about his health. He liked that cheering him on. Because he's running while throwing up one more here just an ass. I think that's one reason why this was difficult for fans and i'll admit the media to to understand how bad things were. I include myself in that from talking to a bunch of people though about all of this over the past couple of months and talking to you right now. I realize that would have been really tough for you guys to do. Considering the position you were in the culture in place jaren cumberland says about john. Brennan john brennan quote. I felt like he was talking bad about me and fans were believing that it was wild. Why didn't cronin ever have any problems. Like that with me. Cronin never had to kick me out of practice. Never had a problem with my character. Nothing i may have gotten into a fight before. Got into trouble for stupid college stuff but nothing with basketball with the coaches. There is a lot more to this and you can read it in the athletic justin williams who does an awesome job covering uc's sports. I've tweeted out a link at moa. Fifteen thirty it's pretty easy to find. So this jaren cumberland side of it. I guess what. I'm i've been wondering for a while and look. I know to a large degree. Some of this doesn't matter because you see basketball has a new coach who's assemble staff and is getting to work on moving the program forward and for those of us who care about uc basketball. That's where most of our concerns lie at at the same time. This is an extraordinarily interesting story. I think to a lot of us. And what does hang in the balance is litigation that you see would certainly like to come on top of or at least not have to pay john brennan what john thinks he's more than five million bucks and that's not an insignificant matter considering considering the pretty limited budget that you see is dealing with athletically here but beyond that. There is a basketball coach. Who's from this area whose reputation two years ago felt impeccable that has had his reputation significantly diminished. And perhaps even destroy. And what's fascinating to me. Is that nobody has spoken up in his defense. The there has been nobody speaking on the record or frankly even off in his defense. If i felt like somebody was beating treated unfairly in the public realm unfair treatment in the public realm and they were unfairly and the key word here is unfairly unjustly having their professional or personal reputation destroyed so i would do everything i could to speak out on their behalf. Now they might not be able to pending litigation. Not gonna stop me. It is remarkable. No one has stepped forward to say. Hey look when. I played for john at an k. You it wasn't this way. Or i played for johnny uc. And it wasn't this way or i worked for john at one of those two schools and it wasn't this way. Nobody that is. I think pretty telling quite frankly. I don't want to equate the two but the last time. I think i really felt this way. It was when when body between adreno crashed his motorcycle and he had an employee that he was sleeping with and there was he was lying about what had happened. He lost his job at arkansas. And i mean just people came out of the woodwork to just crush. Bobby between now. And mike zimmer was working for the bengals at the time he had worked for him in atlanta and he didn't mince. Words just hammered. Bobby between and i remember thinking at the time this dude who's been coaching for a long time. Surely there's players that have played for him or coaches. That have worked for them. That are going to step up and go look. He may have made some mistakes. But he's not a bad dude. He's not a bad human being. He's not a bad coach. he's not the rotten guy. everybody says he is. Nobody did that and i always think. That's that's that's telling man when when you are in the crosshairs of the public and your reputation is being sullied and people are are criticizing your character if it's not true if the things people are saying aren't true someone steps up and says hey man that perspective is either inaccurate or it's not mine. It's interesting that that's not happening here. The question i have for you five one three seven four nine fifteen thirty when all this was starting to unfold. I'll be honest with you. I was. I was caught off guard by a lot of it just like a lot of people were and let's be honest here. There were some people who seem to think this was coming and maybe should have been paid closer attention to but in the immediate aftermath of the season there were a lot of folks criticize john cunningham in uc for handling this poorly for conducting a witch hunt for destroying the basketball program unnecessarily. If that's the camp you were in. Are you there now. I have to local lines available at five one. Three seven four nine fifteen thirty eight six six seven zero two three seven seven six. We'll get to fill and we'll get to mike. You can also tweet me at moa. Fifteen thirty brennaman and jones on baseball's coming up at about fifteen minutes. I just have a simple question. I'm not joining the tim. Tebow circus because i don't think there's going to be a tim. Tebow circus if you don't want to be a tim tebow circus. But i do have a question about tim tebow. And how you feel about getting a chance with the jacksonville. Jaguars we'll do that. Coming up in the five o'clock hour on espn fifteen thirty cincinnati sports station. It's update servants of kelsey. Chevrolet home of lifetime powertrain protection and guarantee credit approval from their family to yours for life. Kelsey chef dot com. Jeff hoffman j. T. brubaker that pitchers tonight reds pirates middle game of their three-game set and The starting lineup for this evening in pittsburgh since l. winker castanos moussaka snake win suarez. Barnhart farmer and hoffman batting ninth. Amir garrett's seven game suspension has been reduced to a five game suspension last night's first game between the reds and pirates featured a standoff before the game it was fun i might take umbrage with whole areas which is how it's described here in the headline of the piece. It might not have been hilarious but it was funny funny. He was lighthearted. Harmless was cute. It maybe even areas based on your sense of humor. Alex plan dino and louis or the pirates both held pre-game standoff in front of their dugouts after the national anthem was played blandino and oviedo held their poses for several minutes as the pirates took the field to start warming up. Neither guy dared to move the two teams dugouts. Were getting into it. Mitch keller finished. His warm pitchers both guys held their ground. The umpire chris conroy motion for both of them to leave and finally both did returning to his dugout. I meaning blandino won the standoff and it was funny and it was lighthearted and it was fun and it was cute and it was all of those things to the extent that major league. Baseball's official twitter accounts tweeted the standoff cut four which is one of their twitter accounts at cut. Four tweeted out the video within minutes of the standoff happening catching it with queue up the old west door music because we've got a good old fashioned showdown in pittsburgh at mlb re tweeted it well as it turns out today. The reds have been informed by major league baseball. That standoffs won't be able to happen anymore. You'll hear david bell on this and other things coming up at five thirty five here. You had this fun little thing happening before a game. A game a game by the way a game a fun thing happened before a game and the minister of no fun rob manfred has stepped in and said sorry. Nobody was offended. Nobody was hurt. The game was not delayed because of it sorry. No more stared hounds during and after the national anthem. By the way it's worth repeating major league baseball which is said by the way nobody's been. We haven't done a suspension right. Major league baseball thought so much of the staredown last night they used it for internet content but today can have it anymore. If mlb was good at policing fun. As i wish it would be making sure people can actually watch baseball games. Imagine what kind of shape. The sport would be quarter. Five fill is calling from madisonville. High phil mo. Has there been any commissioner who hates their sport as much as rob manfred eight baseball. No good no no. i've never seen. I've never seen a sport which the people running it seemed to be at such odds with the people who consume it and the game itself real quick. John brand take winning covers up a whole lot of stuff. But if you ain't winning there's no cover and four the caller who was hoping that somehow that saint louis reach out and sign our pool halls. The ghost of albert pool host co host dead carcass could be resurrected. He would brief fifty support against read. No we know how ends for the love of god. That's a that's a very very good point. Yes how pulls ultimate reds killer with enormous stats against the reds. Yeah look i get sentimentality. If i'm a saint louis cardinals fan. I don't want our pools coming back. Forty one years old. I can't m. he's gonna come off the bench. This is not like a three week thing. It's one thing if he gets cut loose september the first and he's gonna be around for a month cool. Let's do it. He's got nothing left. That's not me saying it. That's the number saying that's history saying that that's age saying that. The john brannon thing i mean would. Winning have covered everything up. Yeah i guess one more but it's not like they won eight games his first year. They were the top seed heading into the as he tournament and they did make the finals of the as he tournament this year. The one dynamic that i think would have been really interesting. The athletic director who moved on from john brannon is not the athletic director. Who hired john brennan. So if there were issues beneath the surface during john brennan's first year. Remember when john brennan coached his first game. Uc mike bone was in southern california. He'd already left. There was a gap from late. October early november until right before christmas that there was no athletic director. There was people taking care of the job but there was no ad. I wonder how much of how differently this would've played out. Had mike don never laughed or the timing of his departure. Been a little bit different more on that coming up in the five o'clock hour plus people are mad at tim. Tebow people who are mad at tim. Tebow have apparently never entered the workforce that and one quick thing on the bengals and the defense. And i don't want to sound negative but it will. Plus you'll hear david bell on the no more standoff thing as the reds get set to play the pirates tonight a ton to get to but first brennaman and jones but today not on baseball. Are you ready for some football. We are dave lap and you're listening to the home of the bengals. Espn fifteen thousand allegra. It's exactly five five. This is espn fifteen thirty. Thank you for listening. Glad you're here. We're having a marvelous tuesday. I know i am. You know what. We're going to start the hour with a phone call. That's right breaking rules. Today are boy mike in. La mike you're on espn fifteen thirty. What are you. What are you talking to me on. What kind of device there you go. You sound fine now. I'm sorry. But i had it on speaker. I was Folding towels very excited for you. Yeah well i. I take my ninety two year old mom and he ain't worth much so i i got it. Well she's worth everything but it's your ninety two year old mom. Yeah that's why. I'm taking care of her. She lives with me So anyway It's my private investment banker with some fiduciary Connotations because you take care of me. I want to extend my gratitude because i just keep making money with you and tony and your deba come my friend and you're going to make some big money on the tv somewhere really yard and all you know it's going to happen doing doing what on television predicting sports who is going to be paying me this money. I well. I don't know i mean i. I would think that since that sounds like a lucrative career. You should be working on that now. I really know what i should do is get off my button and show some initiative and pursue a career goal of mine. Well i mean you're making. I mean hopefully. You're making a good living and you know supporting here. You're a wonderful family and everything. But i know you a lot of time and effort into your job because you basically cherry that station and No no no no. No no this is a me and taryn and tony pike and more and then it's basically the four of us. No i understand quite literally. Only the four of us i understand. You're of the key. Come to my rescue. You're you're you're being very nice to me. I've being flipping. Go ahead. no you're no seriously. You guys have really helped me out a lot with my bills from my mom's medical so anyway i've talked about this before but i just hope come happened. Okay jesse winker I i'm not so adverse maybe trading the guy really an. Here's here's my philosophy. He stinks it. He stinks defensively wherever they put him so he just he is adhd and through and so good and we all know is key to baseball right basically and so and there's here is around. I mean he's on a nice role now and i'm happy for him and happy. He's the main guy for the reds right now. But i just think that when it comes to playoff times it's the red get there. I don't think they will. I'm kind of in your ballpark in that regard. But the team's defenses shabby and he's not helping things any in that regard. So you think they could get you know a pretty impressive starting pitcher that you would discount the idea of trade. I would discount the idea of a trade to almost anybody involving almost anything for a couple of reasons number one. I have a guy under team control for the future who is still ascending often supplier best offensive player last year. He's the best offensive player on the team this year. And you mentioned the thing. There's at least a possibility of one might argue a likelihood that the national league is going to have the d. h. next season. So you can't you can't trade him because you don't like his defense number one. He plays left field right at the end of the day. You're going to have a crummy glove out there in left field number two that that might be. That concerned might be washed away if the new cba includes a d. h. and the nl next season. Then he could just deitch because at one point we had kevin mitchell and left building. We've we've had adam dunn in johnny combs and just a collection of dudes who defensively. This seems defensive issues. I'm more than willing to live with. Jesse winker in left field defensively. If everything else gets cleaned up. I'll put my worst glove and left field especially if that guy is gonna hit i get three more years of jesse winker a guy who is really just kind of coming into his own. A guy who still jesse winker still has not been through more than two full seasons. If you add up all the games he's played in. Obviously last year's shortened season has something to do with this jesse winker has played in three hundred and twenty nine big league games. He's basically played two years. He currently leads the national league no. Ps he currently leads the national league in batting average. I'm not saying he's gonna do either of those two things. But i finally got a guy in the outfield. Who can do the kinds of things. I've been looking for for a while and i get them for the next three years and he's not even close to thirty years old. You would have to give me literally a farm. Plus a bunch of baseball players for me to trade him away. What american league team offered you. A top shelf shortstop. How long do i get the top shelf shortstop four. i have jose garcia. Who i feel like is going to be here. In due time and the free agency class at shortstop this year is unprecedentedly. Good i don't think unprecedentedly is a word but there's never been a collection of free agent shortstops as good as the one that is going to be available. This offseason okay. So basically he will not end up being a nomadic experience. I just he's finally getting. He's finally hitting at a level that i've hoped he would hit for years. He's gotten better from two thousand nineteen to two thousand and twenty two this year. He plays a position where his glove doesn't matter. His the defensive issues may be solved by having a d. h. next year. And there's no reasonable replacement who could do it. He does offensively i just. I'm not a big believer in. The term untouchable but a seven year. Old guy under team control for three years. Who's leading the league into important categories. Who's not that great with the glove. I can live with him playing field and be very very happy. You would have to give me a lot. I mean they'll ton to give me the trade jesse winker team control. That's like in the nfl with a five year. Thanks so they. they don't have they. Can i have to pay a lot of money. Well no he's so he's he's in his arbitration years so he's going to start making some some pretty some pretty significant dole here moving forward but he can't be a free agent. His his earliest free agency is two thousand and twenty four. Okay so it's not as much the money as it is that he's he's pretty much stuck in cincinnati cincinnati for the next three years because of how the system works. Now maybe the new. Cba blows all that up. I i kinda don't think it will. Jesse winker is under team control through the two thousand and twenty three season and even and even by then you know i find he's gonna be approaching thirty years old you know. Do you wanna pay big money. Depending on what he's doing but as for the purposes of what they're trying to do right now. I don't think that whatever you could get back in a trade could help you as much in the short term as keeping jesse winker. Well keep that money coming into your very grateful. Fan mike here and one one quick thing. He's the Got to win some games because the san francisco giants are coming in leading a tough division. And they're not typically impressive but what they do is they hit in the clutch. Yeah they do. It's been fun as much as i. Hate buster posey because he hit a grand slam against in game five. He's enjoyed a resurgence season at the age of thirty. Four statistically been unbelievable and he's really carrying that team but he has hit in the clutch. They've gotten some good starting pitching kevin guzman's been very good and nobody's paying any attention to it a couple of former reds. Everybody knows. Johnny cueto is out there. Alex wood has been great and anthony. Desclafani has been really really good as well. Yeah and alex. Would i think when he was a dodger for about three or four years before the reds picked him up in that track for now. You're right so thanks for the call. You call me thank you. I appreciate the phone that you would ever know johnny cueto. The giants are here Next week ish. Everybody knows johnny cueto goes out there and pitch against a few weeks ago. Kevin guzman pitch for the reds. Got an era of one nine. Seven through seven starts anthony. Desclafani was here for a long time era of two forty. Seven starts alex wood who was obviously an all-star los angeles spent one season here was usually hurt and era of one eighty through five starts the only non read who's currently in their rotation. Aaron sanchez is on the injured list. The only non former red. Who's in that rotation is logan web and he's the worst starter on the staff. Cueto guzman disco alex wood in that starting rotation for giants team. That is twenty twenty one fourteen. I think time with the cardinals for the best record in the National league central. Speaking of the cardinals. Can i make fun of another radio. Station's website real quick. Of course i can. It's my show camel x. Radio is one of the best radio stations in the country. I could say that despite the fact that they are not an iheart radio radio station. Kim alexis stations in the mid west with huge booming signals. Right seven hundred. Wwl w w c. K y where we point do south. Wjr in detroit just behemoths right well. Komo ax is one of those on a clear night. You can listen to pretty much anywhere in the mid west their website. They released a tweeted this out. They tweeted out a story. The oakland athletics have been allowed to quote explore the possibility of moving to a new city because for years. They've been trying to get a new stadium done and it hasn't happened so major league baseball has given the go-ahead to explore the possibility of finding a new home so campbell x. Radio tweeted out a story asking their listeners. Where would you want to see them. Move to. And during brennaman and jones not on baseball i clicked on the link because i wanted to see what cities they talked about. And so there's the headline from camel x. Radio the voice of saint. louis. If oakland a's relocate here the cities they could move to all right fine so number one las vegas and there's a picture of a legion stadium. Which is where. The las vegas raiders. Play. the bengals are going to play. The las vegas raiders this year and a little blurb on las vegas growing influence of sports. Betting they've landed nhl team. They've got an nfl team. They've got a new stadium. Maybe the as can move in with the raiders. Which is the arrangement they had in oakland. There's a picture of the stadium. Enders montreal and there's a picture of montreal olympic stadium where the expos played the expos left to go to washington in two thousand and five and montreal. There's you know they're dying for a team there. There's a picture of olympic stadium. So then i scroll down nashville. Now above nashville they actually show oakland coliseum. Which is called network coliseum. It's dump even though. I've never been there. I could say that but okay it's weird. They didn't show a nashville landmark. But fine they showed the oakland a.'s. Ballpark that makes sense and then monterrey monterrey mexico right. The cities that bid for the expos. They've hosted series the reds played. There are a couple of years ago and there's a picture of fans in monterey watching the baseball game with the at mlb mexico so there's four some scrolling down. I want to see what the fifth one is portland. Now who knows about portland's market size. I don't care about that. Here's what's interesting to me above. Portland is a picture of riverfront stadium. Which was demolished in two thousand and two and by the way. It's a picture of riverfront stadium and the caption with the picture. Says could the as leave oakland for portland with a pinch and by the way. The picture of riverfront stadium member. If you're old enough. They used to have assigned like on the facade that said advanced tickets reds logo. it's clearly visible in the photo. Somebody thinks riverfront stadium's in portland kamil x. The voice of saint louis. I'm probably the only person who find this amusing montreal. There's a. Is there a minor league team in portland right. There's something important you can show a picture of. What ballpark us for portland. The old one in cincinnati re tweeted my chances of ever working at camelback switch. Not that i harboured any real desire to ever do that but you never know. My chances of working for camel ex probablya gone up in flames. It's eighteen minutes after five o'clock five one. Three seven four nine fifteen thirty eight six six seven three seven seven six. You're going to hear david david bell cracking down or major league. Baseball's cracking down on the ball players having fun during the national anthem. So you'll hear david bell on that subject coming up in about fifteen minutes and one fear. I do have about the bengals this season. Espn fifteen thirty. Cincinnati sport station twenty four minutes. After five o'clock this is espn fifteen thirty. Forget cincy three sixty tomorrow at noon. Pike too big hours including segment with me. We call walks which we went on a bit of a limb out on a bit of a limb when it comes to locks of the night Earlier today catch that on the podcast. Page of espn fifteen. Thirty dot com five one. Three seven four nine fifteen thirty and eight six six seven zero two three seven seven six. Brian is on a cell phone. Hi brian. I'm doing a talk show how about you. I did in my car. Waiting to go into meyer. It's about the same as you I i have a theory. That the this whole thing with rob manford with kathy on us with With the mirror garrett. Now with this whole thing with the national anthem it is your fault. It's my fault it is. And i'll tell you why i mean anybody can listen to your show right on iheart. Yes sir i heart. Yes i think that rob manfred listen to your show. It's heard about you know how much you hate him. And he hates the read. Your fault well that be there. There would be no bigger indictment against his commissionership than the fact that he's listening to me in cincinnati instead of figuring out how to grow the game and so i guess the fact that i find him to be inept that wouldn't surprise me. I also wish. I had that kind of juice i wished i had that kind of poll. And if he is listening right now. I would love for him to call in. But i do think that you are vastly overstating the importance of this show. And whether or not rob manfred is listening to it. Well i think you could be under selling your show a little bit and you should give yourself more credit mile. I think so. I mean if because these are three that have happened this year all the reds now i mean the thing with blandino staredown they. Dave apparently told the pirates. Like you can't do that anymore. I guess maybe they're going to issue a memo and say no more stare downs during the anthem amir garrett and by the way the mayor garrett suspension has been reduced by two games. So do i get credit for talking him into reducing the suspension by two. Well maybe they should give those two games to buy us for jumping the rail. Of course they should. They should have given by as five and garett none absolutely. It's i thought the nfl was the no fun league. Well the thing is the. Nfl has led its hair down a little bit in recent years right like they're allowing end zone celebrations. They're encouraging guys to show their personality. And you know it's it's not the way many us would like but they have let their hair down a little bit that major league baseball. It's the exact opposite but they the thing that bothers a lot of his is number. One they do this whole let the kids play campaign which is make some hypocrites because they don't want the kids to play number two. I don't know what the rules are. Like if you flip a bat. That's okay that showing emotion but if you yell at somebody that showing emotion. That's not allowed and that's might say well that's taunting okay. No sport is taunting. Give you a suspension. You don't get seven games in the nba for dunkin on some dude and getting in his face. They might t up two shots in the ball for the other team. Don't suspend you don't cut into your roster. The rats are gonna play a man short for the next five games. Because amir gary added somebody and i just want to know what the rules are. Who's allowed to yell. Who's allowed to show emotion and what falls under the umbrella of showing emotion. Now i probably gave it to you. And i think that one of the things that that the game desperately needs is is young fans and i think you look around baseball and you see the young players who were doing exciting things they need to as you said. Let those guys do those things because young kids see that they want the game to be fun. If it's a bunch of people being Cardboard cutouts playing a baseball game. Don't wanna do that. No no and they don't wanna be scolded about the bright way to watch a game or consumer product either. There seems to be a lot of that in that sport. Yep i think you're underselling. I think i have a lot more power than you even now. We're going to investigate this van. Ryan enjoy meyer. Thank you. I was watching. Mlb network over the weekend and they're going through all the games all the the weekend's action and there's brian kenny who's been on that network since its beginning like reprimanding the audience for not knowing weighted on base average. Now do i think advanced metrics are important in evaluating talent in making decisions in making prognostications in evaluating trades in talking about contracts. Yes immensely so. I may subscriber to the newsletter of reds content plus which is an analytically forward newsletter. And it's immensely helpful. It's very educational. I choose to consume them. But like i'm watching brian kenny. Who's like reprimanding the audience. Reprimand well if you don't know waited on based on average ed i do like some of us just wanna like come home at the end of the day bust. Open a cold one. Chill out my feet up. Watch ballgame up yelled at not be. I mean you have that and then you have like. I subscribe to mlb. And so i watch a lot of local broadcasters and we made fun of pirates for doing this the man of like washed up all ballplayers who spend the entire broadcast telling you how bad the product is. It is remarkable. How much better things worth thirty years ago. And by the way they may have a point. But you know it's not going to attract newer fans younger fans you telling them how crappy the product is by the way on. Espn dot com today. There's a series of mini essays. Which makes the sound really hoity toity. But it's not. It's a fourteen mini essays on the state of baseball inside the biggest questions. Mlb facing with the future of this sport at stake and this is approach from a number of different standpoints. But one of the writers is a guy by the name of bradford doolittle. I always complain about baseball's blackout policy. I'll read for you three paragraphs here if you consider the national association a major league which many don't my home state of iowa has had a big league team. The eighteen seventy five keokuk westerns which lasted for thirteen games. Sadly for ireland's it may have been better to be a big league fan and eight. Eighteen seventy five than it is now one hundred and forty six years later. I was become an avatar for what worries me most about baseball's future a lack of of accessibility for too many people and an over reliance on the economically elite to generate revenue. There are six big-league clubs in the states that share a border with iowa any fan there who buys one of mlb's national broadcast packages to follow. The sport. can't watch any of them because of baseball's archaic blackout rules. Las vegas is also blacked out from watching six teams and that's a potential. Mlb expansion city in chicago if you rely on streaming and use the wrong service. You can't watch the cubs in la numerous fan still. Don't get dodgers games. I have heard from a number of reds fans here in town who cannot watch reds baseball on their streaming service of choice. All of this comes. At a time. When economic disparity is at historic levels and ticket prices at mlb ballparks grow excrete increasingly expensive to keep the foundation of the sport. Strong baseball needs to get as many butts and seats eyeballs on games as possible even if it means loosening the grip on every short term marginal dollar. This can't just be a sport played by and watched by the well off. And that frankly is what it's becoming that last sentence was me interjecting. And the term premium experience needs to be stricken from every piece of mlb related marketing material. Wherever you find by the way you see premium experience you know what you're not getting. They're not getting new fans not getting working class. Folks not getting the kind of people baseball that used to be the the lifeblood of baseball's customer base. I hear on a nightly basis whenever the reds are playing and i'll look on twitter from somebody either in town or hours away from cincinnati to can't watch the games if you wanna grow your product. Put it in front of as many eyeballs as possible. This sport does not do that. It's remarkable like him. I know i criticize manford a lot. I do it from a place of genuine love. I want baseball to do well. I love the sport. I love it when it's a part of the national conversation when it's a part of the local conversation i hate seeing what's happening to it and what's remarkable about what's happening to it is what's happening to. It is occurring dirt time during a time in which there's an insane amount of talent on the field for nando tattoos and rauner coon jacob. Degrom the amount of quality big-league talent right. Now that's worth watching is remarkable and baseball can't capitalize on that. It's twenty minutes away from six o'clock what they are doing. However is banning things like stare. Downs like the one we saw last night in pittsburgh. You'll hear david bell on that and other matters next. Jeff hoffman and jt brubaker. Are tonight pictures as the reds and pirates off in the middle game of a three-game set in pittsburgh at. What is my favorite stadium in major league baseball. Six thirty five tonight. Seven hundred wwl. W want read. Starting lineup you want to give it to digs s. The kind of guy that i am. Let's see let's see leading all four. Cincinnati tonight will be nixon coming off a to hit three. Rbi night last night. jesse waker. Who are boy. mike wants to. Trade jesse is in left field hitting second cassidy. Right is i. Tyler went back in center. Field hitting fifth suarez. Who home last night is at third base batting sixth tucker barnhart behind the plate bat seven th kyle farmer will be shortstop adding eighth. Jeff hoffman on the hill reds with a chance to get above five hundred seventeen and sixteen if they can pull off the win tonight. Amir garrett's seven game suspension has been reduced to five david. Bell spoke about that and other topics with reporters earlier. Today you guys are already carrying extra reliever but l. a. Be just working the next five days without amir in the bullpen. Yeah good news that the mirrors back on track you know. I think it's been obituary three or four. Good outings at around. Were in his confidence back. The kitchen duty working He looks like he always does. So that's the good news Got some work in last night and able to go maybe even longer than just outing We're gonna mess him in the next five days and of noni to use to dwelling on it at this point just trying to keep. We'll try to keep them working and You know maybe mccray like a simulated game in five days to keep them on track and have a bath will be sunday colorado. David we talked blandino a little bit about the staredown last night after the anthem was highly entertaining. Obviously but he said you were part of the dugout crew. That was pleased that he came out on top of that competition and gave him a give. Fist-bump you know. Don't know for sure that the lease with anymore. I didn't realize that. I did get a heads up today salute. We'll go to do that anymore at the time. I didn't realize that you know i. It's something i've never really. I don't know where that started or where it came from. I don't really know history oven angry. I mean it was entertaining and once. You're once you're competing. I definitely wanted him to win. You know so. But now. I know i know i think the the big concern is land the game. So there's david bell no more fun with a staredown after the national anthem resin pirates. Coming up tonight. One other note. Gary clark is going to join the philadelphia. Seventy sixers bounced around throughout his. Nba career the former bearcat obviously started his nba career in houston. Went to orlando where a couple of years ago. He signed a two way deal ended up with denver this year and has just recently signed a deal with the philadelphia. Seventy sixers that according to espn. Adrian wasn't around ski. This season in thirty five games with the magic including eleven starts. He averaged three point. Four points per game only with the nuggets for two games and You got in for two minutes so see how things work out for him in philadelphia. It's eighteen minutes away from six o'clock. Your parents always told you. Life isn't fair. And you're seeing that with tim tebow and you know what it's okay next. Paul dander january number. We did today. Paul and i paul is with the atlantic covers. The bengals. The nfl schedule. Lisa's tomorrow. You just heard the commercial for it. Some games are leaking out. Like rams and bears are going to be the first sunday night game knowing rams and bears. That's what we're doing the first sunday night. Football games to be. I know it's not the first thursday night game. First sunday night is going to be rams bears guy andy dalton versus matthew stafford. You know that's the entire country wants right. So that's going to happen in the schedule is gonna come out in small increments tomorrow. The networks are going to announce their week one games and as is always the case. There's going to be a slow leak of information games. Coming out the bengals. I you know. I've got my reasons for wanting to know when the vegas game is when the chicago game and things like that but nonetheless the schedule paula. We made like. Here's what we did in the first hour. A good eighteen minutes on the schedule release and then good. Ten minutes on the ring of honor vote and then a good ten minutes on chad johnson versus pacman jones. If they were to actually fight which was briefly. Talked about as part of that logan logan. Paul logan pau floyd mayweather card. So hear that entire enthralling our on the podcast page of espn fifteen. Thirty dot com. I don't really wanna talk about tibo more than this particular segment. Why is everybody mad at that and you may think that he has no chance of making an nfl team and my guess is he never plays a meaningful snap in the national football league. It feels like there's a lot of folks who are angry because he's taking advantage of a relationship that he has with urban meyer. Okay that's what life is all about what you do foster's suicide relationships that gives you opportunities my friend and colleague tony. Pike did not go to broadcasting school got himself. A talk show did relationships. He formed during his playing career. Play a part in that one hundred percent has he taken advantage of it. One hundred percent. Dick williams got to be the president of baseball operations for the cincinnati reds. You know what the main reason why was his dad's owner. Don't mind the job dick williams. Did he'd be the first italia reasons he was in that gig. Dad was an on phil. Castellini runs the business side of the reds dads and owner. Like dude. it's your a little league player is on a little team with pat murphy. Pat murphy pitched and hit third. Why pat murphy's dad was a coach. That's that's how it is. Sometimes it is you. You sometimes have opportunities afforded to you based on relationships that you have formed and sometimes those relationships that you have formed are based on what you have accomplished. Sometimes they're not based on anything. You've accomplished tim. Tebow has a relationship with urban meyer. That is at least based on something he accomplished. he was an iconic. College quarterback. Never should've gone in the first round. Never had a prayer of sticking in the nfl always should have chosen to go the tight end route and you wonder how things would have played out. Had he done that nine years ago but his relationship with urban meyer is based on something he accomplished. You can find all sorts of things in sports that were seemingly okay with that are not based on any real merit or a compliment. Look i don't wanna pick on her. Because i think she's doing a really good job. Elizabeth blackburn who every bengals fan worships right now who i loved having on the show you think. She's in her current capacity of her. Last name is eager probably not. She's not deserving. So you know. Is there nepotism involved in here e. l. is urban of a solid for a guy that he went to a solid for tim tebow had played his college. Football florida state. Instead of urban meyer guessing. Tim tebow is not but he's merely taking advantage of an opportunity. He helped create by what he accomplished and during what he accomplished he forged the relationship with somebody who was good enough to go to the nfl. I've no issue with that whatsoever. None zero none based on what you've done and based on who you know and sometimes based on who conceived you you get opportunities. It ain't always fair. It ain't always right but at the end of the day the people who are the best at what they do are still tim. Tebow is still going to have to make the team and still have to prove himself in the nfl. He's also gonna have to sell himself to his teammates and the jacksonville locker room. I mentioned my guy tony rocky to the building. They get a chance now. They have to prove themselves and both men have done that at an extraordinarily high level. Just you can find so many examples in life in the real world where this applies. So i mean look. I don't think it's gonna play a second in the nfl. I don't think he's fast enough or good enough to play tight end by the way. What else would you prefer doing right now. Go work at a bank. Like i understand when tim tebow with jets there. Was this huge media circus. You know what. I never consumed that amazed by people who get t. I'm so tired of the coverage of this then. Don't pay attention to it. I never have a problem. Removing myself from things. I don't wanna consume. It's never a hard thing for me like a lot of the really inflammatory political stuff. I just don't consume it. Don't watch it don't read it. don't find it. don't follow it. The nuts and bolts political stuff. That matters yeah that i hear this with gambling content just just inundated with gambling content. Don't consume it's not hard. The tim tebow circus. It's not hard. I never consumed a second of that when he was with the new york. Jets so that you get a fair shot. Alpes little tom murphy. I was a better pitcher and You know what's funny is. I can't remember pat murph pat. Murphy's was the dead. Kim remembers kid's name. He played on the other team the following year. And i unwittingly drilled him in the ribs and his dad was standing behind me as like. It was a practice game. So we didn't have real lumps any ladera purpose like nah. But i'm not. You know not upset. That i did it. I see the kids. Dad is never gonna hit eighth and come off the bench and we'll give you two innings and right field. Dad's the coach. Guess what where do you wanna play junior. You wanna play first base cool. What do you want to hit. i hit third. You want your first pick an urban meyer's like a little league dad. All right timmy. Coming play it's okay. And i i have no issue whatsoever. If you're going to have an issue with that you have to have an issue with every single time. Something comparable happens and i do not. I'm all for people getting opportunities based on what they've done even it's based on who had them if it's based on their family tree at some point you're going to be put to the test at some point. You're going to have to do the job and that's going to happen with tiba. were done. Shows over gotta go back at it. Three or five tomorrow. Don't forget tony has a cincy three sixty at noon. Have a great night. Thank you for listening. This is espn fifteen thirty. Cincinnati sports station.
