The Sodder Family Tragedy: 75 Years Later

"Which applied to mafia members. And those who dealt with them. The fact that george never talked about his past suggests he might have been bound by a similar restriction. The mafia were very active in sicily in the late eighteen hundreds and early nineteen hundreds. And it's possible that george ran across them when he was a boy. If so that in encounter might have led him to fleeing to the united states. It could also have been why rafael felt like he had to return to their home country. Whatever secrets is childhood held. George spent the nineteen twenties thirties and forties raising his family in fayetteville west virginia but apparently he couldn't escape his past. George frequently argued with the other members of the towns italian-american community usually about a benito mussolini george despise the man and this put him in conflict with other immigrants who supported the fascist prime minister. It's possible that one of georgia's friends or neighbors belong to the american mafia after all by the nineteen twenty s. Many italian mobsters had immigrated to the united states so when george debated italian politics with the locals he could have made a very dangerous enemy without realizing it in nineteen forty-five five maybe the organization felt like they'd had enough of georgia's anti mussalini statements and retaliated by taking his children. Well it's true that the mafia didn't usually perform kidnappings it wasn't totally unheard of one of the most famous examples was the nineteen seventy-three abduction of oil fortune heir. John paul getty the third in the nineteen seventies. The getty family was as famous for their oil well as they were for their infighting. The patriarch j paul. Getty was a notoriously. Difficult man frugal. To the point of pathology. He had payphones installed in his english manor home. So his staff wouldn't add to his phone bill understandably. He didn't get along very well with his grandson john. Paul getty the third who went by paul. Abo- hime ian teenager who being kicked out of his italian prep school for clarity. From huron will refer to j paul getty as getty and his grandson will be paul. Paul kept a low profile to avoid his grandfather's vitriol but that all changed when he suddenly disappeared in rome soon after his worried family received a series of letters and a phone call from the kidnappers. They said they were members of the mafia and they demanded a ransom of seventeen million dollars for polls safe return but getty said that he had fourteen grandchildren besides john and if he gave them a sent it would only encourage similar opportunists to go after them for that reason. Getty refused to pay in response. The mafia cutoff polls ear and mailed it to a newspaper with their demands. Eventually the family paid the mafia three million dollars though getty himself only paid two point two million the maximum amount that he could write off as a loss for tax purposes. And by the end of nineteen seventy-three. Paul was back within the family. Fold though much the worse for wear. This wasn't the only time. The mafia used kidnapping as tactic in rome. In nineteen seventy five. The criminal organization kidnapped gianni bulgari a famous italian. Who was forty years old at the time. His affluent family quickly paid two million dollars for his return and he emerged relatively unscathed by the ordeal. However the solders were decidedly not wealthy. So it seems unlikely that the mob would have kidnapped their children for money. What's more george and jenny never received a ransom note. That said it is possible that the criminal society could have murdered the solder children in retaliation for something. George did the mafia's. Arcane codes supposedly protect women and young children but they don't always abide by these values take for example the case of giuseppe di matteo in one thousand nine hundred ninety three santino di matteo a former member of the sicilian. Mafia was preparing to testify against them in court in a bid to silence him. The mob kidnapped his twelve year. Old son giuseppi.

"This tune in the bumper rotation here Tallien guy seven time sun goes back to the seventies when the J. Paul Getty is the third was kidnapped or whatever in Alaska cruises No Way call great to have you on the program a glad you waited I appreciate that hi five one a miracle to talk to you I just had to call you and say what a blessing you and president trump and Catherine are to our country I'm eighty two years old and pretty good shape I ride my bike every day stand accused of having too much common sense well I listen to the radio I read the paper no TV for me that that's all you get is why did you say no TV for you mean no TV news now I don't now now like you don't even watch the walking dead well I I don't even know what all that stuff is in yeah I read the paper the local welfare liberal conservative but I got subscription to eat part times and if you want the timeline on covert unplanned and a little bit of Conrad black that's the place to walk and my husband and I when I come started running the first rally in el Paso Texas for half hour from now we went down a little late but the lies they told about that there were thirty thousand people for comp Fannie Mae yeah you know what they're they're trying to stop those rallies from ever presuming that is exact that's one of the reasons for the ongoing walked down and shut down and why they hope there's a second wave can I find this fascinating to because all during the twenty sixteen campaign and Democrats are out there saying of these rallies and others I mean anything you can't gauge popularity or votes from crowd size at a rally in a while Hillary had two hundred people may she did even know where she was at her rallies they couldn't get her on the bus after one of her rallies she couldn't go up three steps to get on the bus meanwhile here's trump out there were thirty thousand twenty five thousand fifteen depending on the size of the of the venue and they're all out there that doesn't matter it's just a bunch of deplorables showing I would jump under racist sexist bigots whatever and now now do they know the truth so now they're trying to limit the rallies if you don't we don't doubt me because I'm the folks one of the reasons the Democrats and their bodies in the in the health and medical fields are trying to warn everybody don't go out there and start socializing maintaining social distance they do not want these trump rally so you know what's happening the people who would normally go to trump rallies are going to them without trump a bunch of voters are doing parades on various lakes and waterways all over the country there was one here in Florida about three weeks ago trump supporters are attending rallies the only thing is trump isn't at the but they're not going to be stopped they will not be shut down or locked down its it's an amazing thing to see it really is it's it's when you stop and look at this stuff seriously intellectually you will get all the Democrats are doing to stop Donald Trump almost all of it requires things that are negative for the country at large as well that's to me a sign of how overwhelmingly successful the trump economic agenda has been it would be it would be one thing if all they had to do was stop trump here there they've got to stop the country because trump is so closely tied with a record low African American unemployment record low Hispanic unemployment record high labor force participation rate record high the employment record high wage gains trump did all this in three years after an eight year administration of Obama telling us the good old days are over and there's a new norm now and the new norm is to be administered by Obama a new era of decline only we can manage he said and in three years after Obama's splits the CM we have a roaring economy with the return of manufacturing jobs and Obama swore up and down could not return and they did something Democrats if they want to stop trump you have to also stop the country or **** its progress or slow it down here's Edward in Raleigh North Carolina great to have you Sir glad you waited hello greetings from shorter university that's a page from zig Ziglar's automobile university you are an important part of my wife and I curriculum she was a single Hey Russ hi what are the I'm sorry I never got a little bit it was not you and contracts are for calls that are you're always sure what I'm so I just want to get to a point and trump's twenty sixteen campaign slogan is and should be twenty twenty make America great again do it again trump I think it is and I'm extremely disappointed governor Cooper will allow president trump to consider moving the Republican convention other more Carolina yup this reinforces my thought the Democrat national media is not win at waiting well let me ask you a question why do you think the convention should stay in North Carolina I won't open the state the guy is is therefore participating in actions that are not designed to make Donald Trump look good white white why do you think the convention should remain because trump is is openly making noises about moving in either Texas or some other place that's millions of dollars in revenues that will come here to North Carolina to the other doesn't open the state other government allow it what's that that's why we have an NBA team that's why we have a national football team it brings people here in if you want to shut out here is not national hockey so if you are certain you know well put a put a border you wanna you wanna close the border in North Carolina well then yeah North Carolina residents such as myself are going to miss out on on the goodness of what comes from the national convention well look I understand that but but trump's I think trump's reaction is that he doesn't see much cooperation from the governor there the governor won't open the stator won't won't won't goal of full fledged into it no I am I am I have to tell you when this thing was announced for North Carolina walked it's gonna be a Charlottesville Charlottesville you'd need a telescope to find a Republican mayor Charlotte's veil it is it could be the southeastern capital Democrats socialism I said we're going to put the conventional what was the point of this I know that there was a point somewhere somehow about electoral votes and then what have you and so forth but the president is talking about not moving it and I don't know if he's serious or just trying to light a fire under the governor there to get serious about fully opening the state anyway I gotta take a break I appreciate the call back in just a minute.

"In the meantime back in Rome Gail Chase and Yovany were so inundated by information and harassed by the press that it was hard to tell if anything was moving forward in mid August. The kidnappers had reduced the ransom demand to three billion lire or about five point. Five million dollars. Which would be about thirty one million dollars today? Chin Qantas calls had increased in frequency and urgency every time. He threatened Paul's mutilation or death if they didn't get the money right away by this point a month and a half. After Paul's disappearance the case had become an international sensation everyday people called and sent letters from around the world saying they knew something or had seen Paul Chase insisted upon following up on every lead that allowed him to get out into the field and feel like a spy meanwhile dale who developed a rapport with Ching Quanta felt sure. Most of the leads were fakes. To make matters worse. Chase was hurting the negotiations. He didn't speak Italian and didn't trust Yucca. Vanni so he would insist upon yelling at Ching Quanta in a mix of English and Spanish not only was Ching Quanta insulted but he correctly felt chase was trying to cheat him and soon refused to speak to anyone but gail nothing was moving forward except time chase continued to try and outsmart the kidnappers whom he still believed. Were collaborating with Paul. The police made no real progress and continued to support the hoax narrative in order to compensate for their failure. Y'All Cavani would tell the kidnappers. They were getting their money but that it was taking a long time. Ching Quanta would get impatient and make threats. Gail would beg for them to return her son. Chase would race around town after ghosts and spend the family's money on false leads. Dale wanted to negotiate in person but the others talked her of it finally in the middle of October. Ching Quanta said. His bosses were fed up if gail didn't come to meet them and give them the money immediately. They were going to cut off Paul's ear but the kidnappers had been making threats like this for three months. There was no reason to believe they were serious this time and so in chase convinced her that the meeting was a trap and she shouldn't go. Gale wasn't worried. She told Ching Quanta that she couldn't trust them not to kidnap her but they were wrong to assume. The kidnappers were all bluster. The in John get-ahead invested a lot of money in Paul and the men in charge were ready to do whatever it took to get their pay out and if that meant violence in order to get the getty family to take them seriously then so be it coming up. The kidnappers turn violent now back to the story by the morning of October. Twenty First Nineteen seventy-three sixteen year old. J Paul Getty. The third had been held captive by the collaborative Indra Gedeh in the rugged mountains of southern Italy for more than three months. His father and grandfather had both publicly refused to pay the ransom to make matters worse almost the entirety of Italy including the police believe that the kidnapping had been staged by the teenager to get money from his family. The kidnappers had had enough. The men guarding Paul told him that his mother had insult them. By suggesting they weren't trustworthy. They would have to follow through on their threats to get the ransom by that point. Paul had developed a certain amount of sympathy for some of his guards and he understood. They are perspective. He realized that it might take something drastic to make his family. Take the kidnapping seriously and pay up one morning. The guards trimmed the hair round his right ear and clean the skin with alcohol. Paul realized he was about to lose his ear. He felt nauseous and began to shiver with anxiety. He spent the whole day waiting for the inevitable. The next morning the men woke him and started to cook steak. Paul Eight as much as he could. His body would be losing a lot of iron. After he'd had a chance to digest. They sat him down chopping block an adjusted his blindfold. They gave him a handkerchief to bite on and held down his arms and legs one of them put a razor to his right ear and sliced it off in one go. The pain didn't hit immediately. The men clean the wound bandaged. Paul up gave him penicillin and tetanus shots and laid him down on his bed just as the pain and the bleeding started hall bled nonstop for at least three days he was hemorrhaging from the blood vessels around his missing ear and was too weak to move the vomited constantly and screened in agony. The guards began to panic. They had no idea what to do. They couldn't let him die. They tried to get him to walk around to keep his body working but he could barely stand all he could do was lie uselessly. In bed after ten days of this the guards begin to worry. They'd been in one place too long and decided they had to move their hostage. Regardless of his weakness in the meantime the men in charge tried to preserve the ear and Formaldehyde and put it in a plastic bag along with the lock of Paul's hair. They packaged it all up and dropped it in the mail. Now everyone would finally believe that Paul was endanger and the gettys would pay. Jim Quanta called gale and told her what had happened. He told her Paul was hemorrhaging and she needed to pay them immediately in order to get him to a hospital but gail didn't believe him she figured like everything else. It was a ploy and then he started to call and ask. If Paul's ear had arrived it hadn't and delay only reinforced gaels. Belief that the kidnappers were lying to her weeks. Stretched on the kidnappers. Couldn't believe it. They finally taken a violent irreversible step and even that wasn't getting them taken seriously. They thought that perhaps gail was lying to them though. They couldn't understand why what neither party realized was that there was a huge postal strike in Naples. Meaning THAT ALMOST. No mail from the south was going anywhere. Paul's ear was stuck in a sorting warehouse somewhere finally on November tenth three weeks after the ear had been cut off it arrived at one. Of the newspaper's offices in Rome. The paper called both the police and gale and gale was quickly able to identify both ear and the hair as her sons as sick as gail. Feld over what had happened to her child. She hoped that last this horror would galvanize j Paul Getty and Paul Junior into paying the ransom but nothing seemed to change winching. Quanta next called is panic had reached a fever. Pitch not only was Paul not doing well. He said but his bosses would cut off Paul's other ear if they weren't paid soon. Gail realize that Paul would die if they didn't get him out and so she lied telling Chin Quanta she had the money and just had to get it from London. By this point the ransom had come down to approximately three point two million dollars but of course gail didn't have that money and she still only had one place to get it from so she called her father in California panicked and asked him to talk to J. Paul Getty senior. Gale's father must have finally gotten through to the patriarch because in early December chase heard from j Paul Getty that he would pay two point two million dollars in ransom the maximum tax deductible amount his son. Paul Junior would have to pay the remaining one million hall. Junior initially refused though he eventually borrowed the remaining million dollars from his father agreeing to pay it back. At four percent interest. The ransom was finally ready on December. Sixth as the worst winter in recent memory set in chase got the money out of the bank and prepared it for handover. But of course. Even that couldn't go smoothly. Cheese wanted to handle all of the logistics but he only succeeded in angering the kidnappers so gail had to arrange everything with Ching Quanta who gave her very specific instructions. She was to drive a car with two white suitcases on a rooftop luggage rack and go south from Rome towards Palermo. She was to leave at eight o'clock in the morning and drive down the highway at exactly eighty kilometers per hour. She was to have the money ready in sacks when two pieces of gravel hit the windshield. She was to pull over. Take the money out of the car and drive away immediately but cheese wouldn't let gail drive. He's still somehow suspected her of having something to do with the kidnapping conspiracy and wouldn't let her anywhere near the money. Either he drove or no one drove. Gail had no choice and she told.

Plus will still be releasing new episodes of hostage every Thursday get caught up on hostage which for free on spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts now back to the story after experiencing in his father's artsy Bohemian lifestyle in Marrakech in one thousand nine hundred sixty eight eleven year old little Paul returned to Rome wanting to recreate the hippie paradise instead his mother sent him off to a strict Catholic boarding school hoping that it would taint him but Paul continued to act act out and in June of Nineteen seventy-one at age fourteen. He was expelled around the same time his father's wife Talita Alita died of a presumed heroin overdose plunging both father and son into a deep depression that fall in Rome struggling to cope cope with his grief. Little Paul discovered marijuana and girls at the same time his father Paul Junior became more addicted to drugs six the two would even smoke pot together gail didn't know what to do with a fourteen year old son so she let him run wild he started to deal deal marijuana and cocaine and got involved in Rome's Hippie scene mingling with his father's artistic friends then he began modeling soon soon a photograph of him a magazine Elevated Little Paul to local celebrity status and he became known as the Golden Hippie in early Nineteen seventy-two Paul Junior invited his fifteen year old son to come live with him and his new girlfriend in in London there little Paul discovered acid and harder drugs. It wasn't long before his introverted father realized he couldn't cope with the rebellious teenager and so he sent little Paul to his grandfather j Paul Getty. Didn't I know what to do with the longhaired ripped jeans wearing teen who showed up at his mansion that summer he tried to take the boy under his wing and groomed to take over the family business but little Paul wasn't interested in fact the only thing he was interested in was his grandfather's money and the power that came with it he saw firsthand what being a getty really meant he relished the respect and Power of the Patriarchs position and the luster of what it meant to be a getty air manifested before him when Little Paul Getty the third returned home to Rome in the middle of nineteen seventy two the a fifteen year old had fully completed his transformation into a wild child. His mother had virtually given up on trying to keep him in check. He ran around the city with a glamorous older crowd doing hard drugs partying all night and going through girlfriend after girlfriend. Paul relished feeling doing like an adult and knowing he was flouting his mother's wishes he hadn't returned to school that year instead spending his days hanging out with his artist friends and getting high that summer while on a trip to Posey Tano he met Marcello crazy a painter in his early thirties who ran in the same circles in Rome the to immediately hit it off despite the age difference when fall came around and it was time to return to wrong. Tom Marcello offered to let Paul stay in his own apartment. Turn Studio Paul jumped at the chance. It was an opportunity for the young team to blossom awesome. He focused on his painting and he and Marcello even held an exhibition in the studio. He also got to know the trustee for a neighborhood where he was staying from. Its founding in Roman Times. Just savory had long been a rough working class neighborhood of immigrants and outcasts by the early nineteen in seventy s it was known as a hang out for artists political radicals and the petty criminals known as the Mala Vita to say Paul loved it he kept company with the down and out Italian artists and got to know the local crime boss Jim Bologna who ran the areas has drug trade. He wielded his name to open doors and attract girls. He began to pay for meals at his favorite local restaurant with his paintings. In quickly became a fixture at the best local nightclubs in early nineteen seventy-three shortly after his sixteenth birthday. Paul met Martine Zaka Martine and her sister Utah were twenty four year old twins from Germany who believed vacant make the the world a better place through love and art by the time they met Paul. They were just starting to make a name for themselves as artists and actors and were hanging out with the likes of Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol Paul liked Martine from the start and she and Utah got to know him the twins realized Paul was kindred spirit who shared their dreams of improving the world through art and love they invited him to move in with them not as a boyfriend or sexual partner but rather the third part of their soul before long the three head move back into Marcello Place and shortly thereafter Paul Martine gene became a couple with the twins. Paul started to become more politically engaged even as he liked using the getting name Paul began to speak out against his grandfather's oil company and how it was destroying the planet and funding corrupt politicians early that year. He was arrested during a student demonstration. Do we claim to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time but as he joined the twins World Paul's profile was rising among the Mala Vita crew to he liked hobnobbing with the mobster Chan Bologna and his affiliates and started to get involved in bigger drug deals in the sixteen year olds mind he was organizing a gang he felt invincible and rebellious like character in a movie he wanted to to be part of drug dealing and weapons trading and political disruption he didn't think twice about what it meant to be involved with criminal organizations or to the the money for the drugs he and his friends were consuming according to the research of Dr Laurence Steinberg of Temple University teenagers are more likely than children children or adults to engage in risky behavior because of their psychosocial immaturity in other words teenagers impulse control emotion regulation delay of gratification and resistance to peer influence are not fully developed as a teenager here who craved an exciting lifestyle was already surrounded by people who are involved in criminal organizations. Paul was ideally positioned to engage in risky key behavior. You may have recognized that it was dangerous but as psychosocial immaturity meant that he got involved anyway an example all of his inability to resist peer influence is how every so often one of Paul's friends would suggest that they should kidnap him in order to get access access to his grandfather's money. Paul would agree with them thinking. It was just talk. His friends usually talk to bigger game than they played Martine in Utah felt. It's a bit uncomfortable about his associations with Mala Vita but they also shared his naive enthusiasm. For the adventurous drug fueled lifestyle plus plus the mobsters had money and the twins were trying to raise funds to make a film so when one day Chan Bologna offered to be an investor are they agreed to meet in when Paul Martine and Utah arrived the apartment was filled with ten to fifteen middle aged Italian talion mobsters they locked the door behind the twins and Paul and started screening porn on a projector immediately unsettled by the situation. Paul explained to Chan Baloney that he had to go shopping. Cham- Baloney agreed to let him leave but insisted the twins stayed talk about financing seeing their film. Paul immediately knew this meant trouble but was smart enough to know that protesting put the twins in more danger than leaving them with naught in his stomach. He walked out of the apartment. After Paul left Chom Baloney quickly agreed to give Martine and Utah the money but he wouldn't let them leave the apartment instead the mobsters insisted that they all celebrate over cocaine and champagne it became obvious what the men really wanted from the two young women the mobsters strip down to their underwear and begin to argue amongst themselves which them would get have have sex with the twins terrified. Martine and Yuda protested. They tried every trick in the book to put the men off including locking themselves elves in the bathroom. The twins were held captive in the apartment for three days during this time. Chun Baloney tried to convince Utah Utah to marry him but she refused. Both women claimed the men didn't rape them despite threatening to on the second day Paul and Marcello tried to intervene but the mobsters fired machine guns at the two young men scaring them off on the third day Chum Baloney the group paranoid and decided they had to move locations however while changing cars on a busy street the twins were able to escape the twins accused Paul of having traded them to the mobsters in exchange for cocaine or perhaps relief from the money he owed with them. He swore to them that he had no idea what would happen. Though he did acknowledge he'd behaved poorly and hadn't considered the consequences of of introducing them to the mob regardless. U2 was so upset that she moved out of their shared apartment.

I know that NPR has people monitoring this program, and they actually every time it comes up in the rotation. It's prison called an ancient on Kuessel by an Italian artist named. Sellin tunnel. Yeah. Edry on O'Sullivan Tahoe. What it turns out that NPR decided to do a miniature profile on this song? I'm wondering how and why did NPR ever hear about this? Now, I know that NPR has people monitoring this program, and they occasionally translate this program for the NPR audience. So that NPR audience members could know what? Conservatism sounds like I'm wondering if they heard me play the tune in the bumper rotation and talk about it, and they went out and looked it up. I I became aware of the song. It was played in one of these. It was a TV show. Forget the network on the kidnapping of J Paul Getty's grandson. And Hilary swank is playing the okay..

"So. Junior finally said, he thought the kidnapping was a hoax. And he was angry to have to pay sixty thousand a month to repay his father while little Paul left the next day. Yeah. In the summer of nineteen seventy four. His German girlfriend who is she was still with right? She found out she was pregnant and little. Paul married her. Okay. So someone finally, it's better than saying, disgusting. But this meant that he forfeited any money from the Getty trust. Why? Because it had been written in that any child who married before he was twenty. Two would not get money. This was to avoid the kids. So taking advantage of in l. my God. So sorry in this world, you're allowed to marry a seventeen year old, but you are not allowed as a male to marry over or or female, either one, right? But you still can't Mary over twenty two because you're not mature enough under twenty two and he'd get. He cannot marry under twenty two or they do not get the trust. "So. Yes, they said they were kidnapping, right? A fake kidnapping little. Paul said he was quote ready to do it just out of economic necessity for political reasons and wanting to buy weapons and things. Wait. Okay. So a lot of boxes are checked for little Paul. All I don't think any normal, right? I mean, I guess money, he needs the money, the other, what does he needs to buy? Weapons. Okay. And the last one again, political reasons. I think you could two and three could combine pretty easily. He told us girlfriend, he considered it, but he had changed his mind. Once I stopped doing cocaine, I realized that was not a good idea. So he's hanging out with Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger in Rome. Why the fuck are these guys hanging out with a sixteen year old? It's just rich people drugs. He got a small part in a Roman Polanski film of Jesus Christ. He's hanging out with all the good ones. Jeez, this woman, he knew who was also connected to the mafia said they should fake kidnapping and. And make some money. People keep soft suggesting this to him. I feel like there's a little, sorry going on. Then he started to worry. Is it me. Do I give off that vibe. So you went to Gail and he told her he was addicted to coke k. she cried. Sure. Three m on July tenth nineteen Seventy-three drunk a little. Paul was walking the streets of Rome in tight jeans and a t-shirt with glitter on it. So he was walking around the people in Rome. Do. Suddenly men grabbed him and shoved them into a car on the floor. One asked a little Paul who he was and Paul said, Paul Getty. He immediately realized that was a mistake. So now the guy who has been in a couple pitches for fake kidnappings is getting real kidnapped and he's not mentally gone through any steps of how he'd handle it. No, Gaddi I have access to money, daisy. That's like a big staff who are really. The job all night, stopping to have them get out and marching circles. Awesome. So they didn't know say, couldn't they're like he won't know where he's going that way to do it? No, yeah. If he's blindfolded in the back of a car, still make them go walk in circles that'll disoriented way. Further. Gail got a phone call, quote, we have your son, Paul Getty, we have your son again. He told her not to go to the police. She called the police interesting junior told Gail, she'd have to ask Paul for the money because they weren't speaking. Jesus Christ. So awkward, he'll listen to you Scott. So the car I've been Yari arrived at gales did carbon Yari. It's an Italian military force that has police duties. I thought it was spaghetti with bacon..

"So. Now Paul, I'm pretty sure you just walked through one of those walls. You did it. What happened? All the gnomes. So little, Paul now started going to his grandfather's house. And Paul was of course disappointed in junior, but he thought maybe little. Paul could give them some faith and right maybe, yeah, being dip shits skips a generation. That's right. So the two gettys worked on plans for the j. Paul Getty museum in Malibu. Okay. Right. Just an old man and his fifteen year old grandson working on plans for museum did with my dad. And you did with your absolutely sure. Did it really helps if you can walk through those walls, it's, you can go inspect whenever. That's right. But then little, Paul left London to move back to Rome. He lived. He moved in live with his friend Marcello and a studio apartment and the two fancy themselves. Painters decided to be painters for the rest of life. Okay. So that's the end of them? No. Okay. While he was there a little. Paul rarely talked about his family's money, but everyone knew often eat by paying the owner of a nearby restaurant with a painting. That's. This is a good time to just hate hippies. Well, rich hippies. Because, well, he was only able to pay with the painting because I knew who he was. If he was just an ordinary, do they wouldn't take a painting. It's a new. It's Getty panting like it's gotta be something more than the two bucks for this big Edie. Yeah. What what's the tip situation? I mean, there's a lot you gotta tip out the bussers. You're talking about a whole system here, tipping. It's Rome. They, they are normal. They're, they don't pay people money that work in there. Now the way to do it. The way to do it is that have the restaurant not pay anything and make sure that they depend on strangers. That's the way to create stable business model jackass. Lord apple is. So in Rome a little, Paul became a minor celebrity, the press called him. Does he become the pope? Yes, I knew. Oh. Now, at the end, the end, I love it, the press called him the golden hippie. Nice. That's a great title. He was once arrested while protesting and got a reputation was citing for siding with the oppressed. He spoke out against the rich quote. The rich are the real poor on earth, their mound nutrition is of the spirit. One should pity them k. in London, disappointed, Paul read that in the paper. I'm sure it's like. Oh, my no son of mine. So little Paul. Now sixteen started seeing sixteen. She's got a mighties like mccully Kokin. I feel like I've been with this kid forever. It's just. He started singing twenty four year old German divorced with a one year. Old child. Okay. Let me guess. Grandpa's baby. Small world? Well, I met him when I was third swept me off by Fadi real seducer. He cheated on her. The party just goes and smoke hash. And then he started doing a lot of coke. The area of Rome. A little Paul lived in is where a lot of the mafia lipped boy. Shamma balloon. Ah, was the main coke dealer little. Paul started asking for advances advances on coke. That's, you know, you're in a good spot when you're doing that. It's like you're in a good area. He started hanging out with gangsters and one night met to Air France pilots through them who said to him quote, why don't we kidnap you. I'm sorry, Air France pilot. You're cut off from cocaine for the rest of the night. How's that sound for pushback? We should do. We should get that be. It'd be so simple. Oh, man would just fucking get you. You hostage fucking inbetween flights? Bing bang next day where I'll tell you it's wrong. All the white fucking punk. Oh, boy, this is good. She, I feel my mouse. Your mouse? Yeah, carry around. I nine thankfully thankfully she survived. And then she gave birth on September seven nineteen thirty two to Paul's third son who he named John. Paul Getty junior. "Don't help. What crime did you commit to have to go to Albany New York to do comedy, white collar. That's all. That one's gonna know soon as John. Paul Getty was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. To parents, George Getty, and Sarah Getty, Sarah gave birth to. They call them Paul when when she was forty? Okay. For eighteen ninety two, I would imagine probably that's remarkable aften now Brigitte Nielsen at fifty five. Yeah, baby at fifty five talking about rigid Nielsen who put it in their sly Stallone it's a sequel fuck the last parts ally, but I don't know who did it. But yeah, baby at fifty five. Yeah. No, not a toddler at fifty five baby inside of her. No. On the outside heart. It's gonna come out of her like came out of her, but it already came out. Fifty five years old. She's fifty five. The baby's not. Much younger. I don't wanna do this anymore. So they call them Paul George muscle successful, Minneapolis insurance, man. Okay. Sold insurance. Probably a lot of your parents. George bought the oil rights, some land and quickly struck it rich. He called his company Minna Homa oil men home oil combination of Minnesota and Oklahoma. Well, it is very catchy. Doesn't feel Frankenstein at all. Men are home. Imagine the unveiling of that people were like, oh. Good, really good. I put the names together. I mean, Oakland soda just sounded ridiculous. Gla soda. Sounds like a sports drink. Mino- Minna Homa no stop suggesting other name. Oklahoman my God, everyone. The party leave the veiling. Gone all in on this. Oklahoma. Oklahoma. Oakland. Okay. Oh, kosova. Wait. Now I forgot what he went with. What did he actually go with. I'm wrap wrapped up in here. I've pretzels my mind. What was the? What did he actually go with Minna home in a home. Okay. All right, right. By nineteen six Georgia's a millionaire. Wow. George assume Paul would one day take over the family business? Sure. Why not? Now Paul was an only child he should have been. He had a younger sister died just after being born because that is the law right. So Sarah was obviously thrown by the death of her child. So she didn't allow Paul to have contact with other children because you might get virus. Yeah. Okay. So right there that is a great parenting decision. You know, keep your getaway from other kids.
