Brad Anderson: ESG Is Very Real & Very Dangerous for Companies
"I had a bunch of CEOs in generals and muckety mucks on a panel and they gave me the list of questions and a bunch of the questions were about ESG, environmental, social, and governance efforts. And companies in America are having to grapple with this and CEOs, CFOs, the C suites are having to deal with how do we how do we apply ESG to measure our company's performance? Do you care to weigh in on that, mister Anderson? Because it's something that a lot of our listeners are just becoming familiar with and listen, I felt like I was in The Twilight Zone last week because they're all nodding their heads and talking about how important it is and I kept the talk show hosting me wanted to scream out. I think you're hurting your own your own brand when you go down this path and say, we got appease activists on climate change or whatever the whatever the culture debate is, what do you make? What's your take on the ESG chapter of the companies are having to grapple with right now? That's very real and very dangerous for companies because it's the government asserting a set of values as well as big shareholders like BlackRock, saying you've got to invest your money in a way that we agree with. And you can't necessarily follow the economics again of the customer. It's part of the reason that we've gotten to be energy dependent suddenly from being energy independent is the investments get shifted into places that are maybe not as efficient. But there's a real pressure the companies are facing because it isn't just the SEC is recommending force enforcing ESG as well as big investment firms. So that's a real pressure on boards to comply with this external measurement system.
Brad Anderson: Powerful Companies Assume Customers Have to Follow Them
"Sure, and I'm trying to be objective and appreciate a company and a corporate structure that says, listen, we've got employees who are upset about this. We've got employees who are hurt. They're afraid, they're worried. Now it's a percentage. It's a small percentage of the workforce. I'm sure Disney, but they also don't want to ignore their concerns. However, wow, you can do a lot of damage and sort of throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater and try and do appease or accommodate a small percentage of your workforce. Well, it's probably a big percentage of their headquarters workforce, because it's an industry in which there's a deeply shared set of values. And I would guess that I don't have any question that the management of Disney is tremendously sincere in what they're doing. But they don't do the same when they're dealing with China. So they've got this practical reality they deal with and what they feel like they can be comfortable and act on their value systems. The political value systems, in this case, they're going ahead and do it. And I think it's also what happens to companies sometimes when they've been powerful for a long time, they assume that the customer has to go with them. And that's that, now we're starting to see that not necessarily the case.

Brad Anderson: Businesses Are Not a Place for Religion or Politics
Brad Anderson: Voluntarily Losing a Customer Over Politics Is Insane
"It's not easy to run a company It gets harder and harder when the economy is deteriorating like it is today With inflation difficulty getting product difficulty getting parts they call it the supply chain Most of American ever heard of that before And the situation is really quite dire And yet we have boards of directors Brad Anderson and CEOs and other executives who are so focused on politics and mostly of the left I might say When they should be focused on the shareholder am I right Or are you ever You rail constantly against things that are insane And I think this is in this territory We used to have a number of what it costs us every time we lost the customer And it was a big number And it was going to cost us a ton of money to win a new one to replace the one we lost So voluntarily losing a customer because the corporation decides it's going to disagree with them about some principle they believe in is just insane Plus corporations are not moral sources of authority There are groups of people who have all kinds of different points of view working to try to serve a customer And you're serving the customer You're not telling the customer what to think
Brad Anderson: Difference Between Business Starters & Hired Executives
"So what do you think's going on here Is there a new breed these younger folks come in that have become directors they become execs But they come out of this game schools the same indoctrination mills in many respects is so much of society these days Is that it is something else going on That's a huge part of it It's only part but it's a huge part I noticed this because I was there when Best Buy was a tiny little company And we created a big company out of it but there's a big difference between what the kind of people you typically hire to run and establish company and the people that create a business And part of it is because that leadership is coming in and they're already an established clientele So they sort of take it for granted Whereas if you're starting a business the reason I'm so active with job creators network which is all about real businesses is when you're starting your business every customer's precious to you And you can start taking it for granted and I also firmly disagree with a lot of what's going on in education Where I think it actually corrupts young people's minds in relationship to what business is all about and this construct of really serving somebody as opposed to them serving you
Brad Anderson Suggests Walt Disney Would've Reacted Differently Today
"Whatever happened to a fiduciary duty to the shareholders the people who invest in the company whatever happened to building a brand and that sort of thing I mean take a look at Disney What's happened there is horrific I mean I think old man Disney would go what in the hell have you done to my to my baby here My company here and then they bring on the granddaughter like she had something to do with something because their names What the hell does she have to do with anything Absolutely nothing But then to push this agenda go ahead I'm old enough to remember when I was young that a net from the cello was one of the biggest stars and Walt Disney wouldn't let her appear in beach party movies where their belly button uncovered It's a little different than Walt's
Brad Anderson: A Business Should Be Like Separation of Church & State
"The people who create the business and we're talking generalizations create the business are focused like a laser They're focused like a laser on that business creating it expanding it what can we do to train And then people come in who benefit from what's come before and you're right like TJ it's much like the rest of life And for them it's a different ball game So why not push a social agenda and so forth and so on This wasn't their baby to begin with That is a brilliant point Well that's a very is all of us are in the most important thing and it's important in terms of work life too is do something that gives you a sense of meaning in life I think that's necessary for all of us And that is part of work But it is not a part of the business to make that choice for you And you know if you're serving somebody in a business to me you're getting something very healthily healthily done for your own sense of meaning and everything else But I think a business should be much like the way we look at separation of church and state For a country it's going to stay healthy as long as I can work for a company and have any point of view It's coming into the business And I just align on these things we've got to do It gives me real diversity of points of view and real diversity of potential people to serve the customer Once you start narrowing we only want people with this frame of thinking here your product is going to just deteriorate And I think that for somebody building a business it's so natural to see that But it is so easily
Brad Anderson: Consumers Should Use Social Networking Against Corps
"We have millions of people listening and they're thinking well what can I do about this Is there anything people can do about this Consumers Yeah you mentioned earlier going to annual meetings and I'm in favor of doing that but I wouldn't expect that to work And after I retired I served on as many as 7 boards at once between nonprofits and for profits And I think typically there's an arrogance in the board room that probably would mean that they would look at something to be managed as opposed to really listening to Which is a symptom of what we talked about earlier I think the most effective way for people who is to use social networking And the reason that companies and one of the big reasons that their actions are almost always to the left is that's where the pressure is coming from And I think at some point as we're starting to see with some of the stocks that some of these companies have been impacted you do enough damage even to an established brand that that would get noticed in the boardroom And I think getting out and telling your own personal story about your relationship with the company and why the company is abusing its relationship with you It can be very powerful And with a social networking that's available to us now I think it's the place to go
Brad Anderson: Twitter Is a Good Vehicle to Use Against Companies
"And I think with the changes coming to Twitter I don't mean political changes I mean simply the objectivity that Elon Musk is trying to promote here that gives people who really have had enough even a bigger opportunity to get on there and to express themselves And to coordinate these movements So you're talking about right Yeah and I think Twitter is a particularly good vehicle for that purpose because of the because of the way it's structured Especially if it's not dominated by bots That dominated by what But he says he's going to get rid of bots if he can Is that possible Because that's one of the things that you could always argue that it's just bots attacking us So if they really make it authentic and it's really customers talking back to companies About getting diversity onto the board I mean intellectual diversity Onto the board I think that's the most likely thing I can think of to be effective

"Intense for a while. Wow well so. After that show wound to a close with the night after night season. I guess it would be you well. Even in the midst of it you were doing certain. I guess hiatus projects the most significant of which seems to have been the house of mirth. You talk about as a really big deal at the time i guess why is that was just because it was a vote of confidence outside of the scully universe. Yeah it was about a confidence. In also i was familiar with this quite obscure director and an i had seen some of his films and really been moved by a couple of them and And so the fact that he was asking me or asking me to audition even was a really big deal For me and because you know back then you had merchant ivory films. You had all these period films. That and i really wanted to have an opportunity to be part of that world the period film world and so it was a big deal and also you know trying to squeeze it in between between seasons and i guess maybe that also maybe because it's period or whatever it is it's sort of closer to what you had originally imagine you would be doing before you were diverted with this hit. Tv show right very true right. So that was during the run of x. Files but after the run when some people might say the the safe move would have been to meet with everybody in town in strike while the iron hot and get the next show or movie or whatever in la. You kind of. I guess very deliberately did exact opposite and go to back to london and do theater very well received theater. But that's that's a that's an unexpected move. Why did you decide to do that. First and foremost. I think i wanted to do something. That was the complete antithesis of a hit. Tv show. second of all i. I wasn't sure if i could be on the set again. Just because they're tearing. Yeah but no. I just it. Was you know. It was intense for night for almost a decade. And i mean that's the equivalent of doing you know i don't know six films a year you know. Yeah and Which is a lot Films a year for for nine years I and and i was yeah and at and also at the end of of a series the world gets very small. You know the the the sets and crews wouldn't the but you both get closer together but it also can can become quite a challenging. And i don't want to say toxic environment and just just all you know enmeshed and i just wanted to get as for our of that as possible and also i had always wanted to have a life back in london. I just had. That was such a big part of my formative years and we were always going to move back to the uk in my mind is a kid and i never quite felt like I don't know. I had to mix relationship with with the states where i belonged and so that was the first opportunity that i i had to realize that dream and so i assume as actually even before the x. files was done. I bought a house in london. Wow so you it was a very deliberate and my initial plan was that i was going to be you know. Ideally moving around a lot. More than that. I'd still be spending time in la et cetera. And and and that was the case. Well and i i mean i know there are other things in between but it does seem like it was about five years between. Let's say house of mirth and then the next nine x. files screen project that you did. That was a a major undertaking in this case bleak house. But like that's that's reflective of what you're talking about right like i just get me out of here. Yeah yeah also. Once again people approaching me having a different idea of what they thought i was capable of doing outside of what it seemed. The hollywood thought i was capable of doing. Did you feel that people are only coming to you for. I don't know what what was. Was there a certain type of character. You kept getting approached. The belt actually to be honest. It wasn't so much. I don't even know if i was being approached by people at the end of x. files and i've always Wondered about that. And i think a couple of things one i think it was down to the particular representation that i had at the time to it was fox. Even they have such different divisions between film and television that there was a certain point where i thought you know that later on though why didn't fox even come to me and say. Hey you're you're one of our biggest stars. Come to this but but mostly i'm not sure whether i would have said yes to much had had it come my way because i was pretty determined to to get away from it all for a little while and And really wanted to do to to do theater and and for some reason to do it to do it. In london And that was that need and desire was greater than any desire to be a part of a bigger industry system. Let's just note though that when you did dooley's screen projects maybe somewhat reluctantly. They were very. You're you were very well. Received the house of mirth. Actress national cited phone critics award nomination bleak house bafta and golden globe. Best actress nominations. I mean at least on a internal level. Could you was that gratifying to know that anyone who was skeptical about your ability to do things other than scully. You know each time. It's kind of kind of showing that. That's the stupid position. Yeah possibly. i don't know. I've been so immersed in my my life and my my other life which is me as mom and And in my personal life an in the uk the i. I don't think that i've really ever stop to go. You know to go but can't you see you. Then you know i've been. I've been working at a pace that i've really enjoyed an. I've felt very blessed and fortunate. And also you know i of up until recently i've been adamant now to ever be away from my kids for more than three weeks at a time and so and that's always worked out really well. You know. i've i've been free. I've been a a pain in the ass to to cast because at the beginning i'm like okay. I'm only your girl. If i can shoot during these periods of time because if i can't and come back and see my kids then you've got the wrong person and and that's you know that became a really. I mean so unbelievably blessed to be able to be in a position to be able to say that. And but that you know.

The first from work in the southern downs of south east queensland that's why judith anderson grew up in a house right beside the brown family bakery run by her father and swedish american grandfather hi judith. Hello sir now. This isn't your first home before a microphone is at tell me what happened in warwick when you were a kid. Work was a fantastic community to grow up in as the old story. You know it takes a village to raise a child so there was so many wonderful opportunities and amongst them. So famous Dave's. . History. . From NPR, , it's how I built this show about innovators, , entrepreneurs, , idealists, , and the stories behind the movements they built. . I'm guy rise and on the show today our passion for smoked ribs lead Dave Anderson open a barbecue. . In the middle of nowhere and how it grew into famous Dave's one of the biggest barbecue chains in the country. . Are. . So, , most of the biggest restaurant chains started in small places McDonald's was born in San Bernardino California Domino's in Epsilon t Michigan Sonic Shawnee Oklahoma Arby's Boardman Ohio. . There are a number of reasons why this is the case there's usually less competition. . The rent is lower, , and if white you're offering is new or different people will stand in line for it as they did at the original boardwalk fries in ocean city Maryland which is now a franchise company with more than one hundred locations nationwide they stood in line the chicken. . Salad Chicken Auburn Alabama up which now has one hundred forty stores same with five guys in Arlington, , Virginia and empire of more than fifteen hundred locations today, , and as you will hear in the mid nineteen, , ninety s people came from far and wide for some of the best pit barbecue they ever had and it wasn't in Texas Hill country or eastern North, , Carolina. . But rather in Hayward Wisconsin town of twenty three, , hundred people in the northern reaches of the United States where in January he can get down to minus seventeen degrees. . This is where Dave Anderson, , after years of trying out different business ideas decided to open famous Dave's barbecue in nineteen, , ninety four. . Today famous Dave's has about one hundred and twenty five locations nationwide making it one of the largest barbecue chains in the country. . But the story of Dave's is also a story of how a simple passion for serving smoked ribs chicken and brisket Kim grow too big and too fast and how a founder of can almost lose complete control of a good idea. . Dave Anderson grew up in a working class family in Chicago in the nineteen fifties and sixties both his parents were native Americans who grew up on reservations in different parts of the country. . My Dad's a full blood choctaw Indian from idol. . Homa and if you were to look at a map, , of Oklahoma, , you'd see that I had a bell is in the southeast corner of Oklahoma, , which is way down south, , and then my mom is from the Likud array reservation wishes way up north she's. . A member of the Likud Ray Lake Superior Band of Ojibway says she grew up in Wisconsin he grew up in Oklahoma and how did they meet both of my parents? ? I think is the unfortunate part of my story where taken by the Bureau of Indian affairs away from their families and stuck an Indian boarding schools basically making orphans out of them <hes> now fortunately for me, , though my parents met at Haskell Institute, for , Indians, , Lawrence Kansas so both just to clarify. . So both your parents grew up on Indian reservations they met at a boarding school that I guess was where Indian kids from across the country were brought to I. . Don't know. . Basically to mainstream because my dad when he was brought into a boarding school didn't speak English. . She was <hes>. . A choctaw speaking Indian and <hes>. . When he got put into these boarding schools, , he can remember. . Being beat in having this mouthwash dot with soap and tell e would forget his language and only speak English didn't happen Abraham Lincoln's Day or George Washington's Day. . But this generation my parents I think that's a story that sometimes people in America never here. . No, , they don't what did your dad do for a living when you were a kid? ? My Dad was electricity and <hes>. . My mom was a secretary she worked as a secretary. . So I was like a lot of kids that lived in a working class neighborhood and we didn't have a lot but we always had food on the table I think growing up though I always knew that my family was different because when all the other kids are going out for pizza and hotdogs especially. . In Chicago being a great pizza town. . Chicago hotdogs, , my dad would load us up into the family car and we're headed down to south side of Chicago. . For rips and growing up I. . Knew every black owned barbecue joint in Chicago and I can remember as early as nineteen fifty-nine, nine , eating rip tips at Limbs Barbecue and fifty nine hundred state street. . Yeah I mean Chicago became obviously hugely important. . As Barbecue. . Capital because of the great migration. . So many African Americans who migrated out of the Jim Crow South moved to Chicago and brought them their culinary traditions you the also brought blues, , what a great combination in. So . Chicago throughout the years has always been known as a great blues town down also great, , barbecue. . Dave as a kid. . Did your mom and dad instill strong. . Indian values in you did you did you have a strong? ? Indian identity as a kid. . You know growing up in a native American family we were cognizant that. . We were America's first people. . My Dad was very proud of his choctaw nation. . My mom was proud to be from the Likud array reservation and for us that got carried over in that we ate Indian foods. . My Dad was very insistent that he had his foods from the south my mom <hes> with growing up. . She did a lot of fishing and she harvested wild rice. . And so <hes> throughout years. . My Dad would always. . Make pilgrimages down to the south so he could get his banana. . Corn. . Type of bread almost like tamales wrapped up and corn us, , and then my mom would always take fishing up north and we would harvest wild rice and <hes> but more importantly to raise money for the family. . My parents would have a Indian. . Freiburg stand and my dad would grilled and smoked cup venison mom would make Indian FRY bread and also wild rice soup but we would sell venison fried bread sandwiches along with balls of wild rice soup I think attending Indian powwows with my mom where we would have the Indian Freiburg stand really taught me a lot about cooking cooking outdoors but also the appreciation for foods that are harvested naturally being able to harvest wild rice. . Fishing in all of those experiences that I think throughout the years of always carried

I WANNA start this off by saying one thing publicly there's plenty of people that I like in this business and I love John absolutely love him he's one of my longest Friends and I I miss that he's not yes special special for me well that's that's very naive Ron I appreciate that and kill the same way it kept them still made Ayud kicked me out of our department that we're back on a years ago that was thirty five years ago thirty five years at least Hollywood part back when before the war we won't go into the reasons leads I'll tell you now you what have you done now now everybody's GonNa WanNa hear it's not repeatable off the air believe nobody's GonNa believe Johnny do something warrant it was amazing what was amazing is that they used to draw the race news and sit at Hollywood Park Valley Park I post was two pm so they would have the racist drawn at like nine thirty nine morning yeah everything be finished the race is still the books good we've done you know we're both jock agents and so we we got a place over there by alleyoop both lived on the other side of town near Arcadia Arcadian and and we'd have a place to go to kind of lay by the pool go have lunch and and then we go to the races obviously and then every once in a while you stay over one night or two nights a week you know to be out there in the morning but kicked me out yeah good reason really good reasons really reason and then amazingly amazingly this is how bell racing the White Working Amazingly we ended up sharing a place just a couple of years ago don't street when when I down there working at Gulfstream and Ryan ED place down there and he was kind enough to around the the the mutual we shared a place that it was because we're getting the band back together right yeah it was fun I guess the Michael Knol hydride I thought I thought when I was on earlier and you probably didn't know that I was on Mardi McKee was on Johnny and then John is e Yeah Dan tell are you what are you doing you know I feel like I'm missing out on the party here this is not a show up when he coming in again with when I'll be there when alerts of media it right don't get arrested are you bringing your girl okay yes they're coming it's not making the trip his company's gotTa Work Sleep is left the premises here so I guess supposed to carry on Well Yeah Yeah that's good morning McGee a little earlier and I told you over because they didn't want to you know do my thing while I was driving but pulled in the driveway in this woman comes up she's beeping behind me driveway so I pull up and it's like amount of quarter law or not quarter of a mile long and I'm going she can't I think she's behind me but then she was up in front of me she pulls up she says you know this is private property I call the cops on me yeah right Jim end up in the slammer again then Steve Steve dropped me like a bad habit though for uh one of his other cats out there because the weather's beautiful it's like the tracks GonNa be nice and fast I hope in the excitement starting to build plenty of people getting the town here draw today Hoping for some be some post positions as always I and I say this I kind of like your roster here they're pretty good rock yeah I definitely do I mean lucky enough I thought it was thirty one I guess it's thirty Breeders Cups we've been able to win Dan I would have to say that this lineup this year it's probably as good or better than any that I think I've ever had pending some locked in like tell everybody obviously if we can just win one of these things are doing pretty good I'm GonNa say engine my roster in two seconds here but I'm pretty proud of it at this point we'll see what happens Should I know I know uh-huh handicapping every time I turn around I see a key ally who's writing it was how lucky enough the visible ones are obviously Mackenzie Catalina cruiser only but racist turf sprint Eddie House calls been like Professional Racehorse specify on this course at this distance eight runs yeah yeah and you know my Breeders Cup filly confess air probably be the favorite or second choice and then the other three that I'm kind of excited about his Chris Philly Christopher John Kimmel has been running the last quarter of a mile in twenty twenty three Ish should should have decent chance wicked whisper comes off a huge win in the present and then I ended up on the horse it was second to Chad Brown in the juvenile turf race Adesina I guess as things name is he'd have to disturb that's so I could back into the phone booth did you did you mention only she only yes yes yes looney spectacular yeah she's amazing amazing chilly so we've got chances that's all we can hope for most of them yes I did I'm going to send it to you Steve like I said I said the John I've been lucky enough to be involved this were long time and I've had some really successful years but I'm I'm starting to think this this year lines up as well as as any of them as far as a roster going in and run you and I have talked about this so many different times at breeders cups and at triple brown events etc a about your current your turn jockey and it it seems this year has been different for him whether it's been a focus or mature th there's something that has been different and is that unfair to say probably true yeah you know part of you know you start winning like a tell Nancy I've got people calling that I haven't heard from I've got you know trainers and owners want him that want us it's very simple as it's all of it doesn't matter anything but winning you win this trainer Jockey your phone's GonNa ring if you don't win they're looking for the guys that have one so it's kind of built kind of tour crescendo here I guess you would say where I have a lot of people that are in it's much easier to do this job when they're knocking on your door and you don't have to knock on their door like John and I when we first started out and you're begging people please visit the Chaffetz can you throw me in anything live anything has a chance so now we don't have to do a lotta begging and you know you're lucky enough to be positioned when Bob's GonNa make a change on a horse like Mackenzie for the classic you're you're in the mix and then all of a sudden you get the you get the word that you're you're the one in you know it's pretty exciting it makes it easy to get up in the morning like I said I did I caught the tail end into how did he work how did how did he go great it sounds like he's been handling track well he's going to be obviously forwardly placed and I'm pretty excited about the worst she's got a lot of ws next name he's a good horse he's a really good horse so johnny I interrupted you there for a second I was just GonNa come round with talk about you know being in ages now when you're when you're winning in your phone's ringing instead of you calling everyone else and begging it's funny because and I think Ronald back me up on this when you first start out as young young ages the riders you have not the not the top lighter certainly and you're breaking you're you're learning the ropes should breaking into the game and at that time no you believe that your jockey is as good as any jockey out there I mean you Kinda you Kinda should believe that anyway 'cause you're representing them but over the years I think you kinda come to realize that some guys do this a little bit better the other guys do and some guys it's just more talented and And over the years Ron Ron a sampling of both let me and and we've both gone through times when we've had the low guy on the totem pole and then Ron Certainly as moved forward and had a collection of hall of Famers but it's a big difference is that a world of difference when we first started out stew Sir we'd we'd plug along plug along ship your Jock I we're in southern California ship Golden Gate or Bay Meadows for steak to try and get a child struggle it a little Adele Mara were counting the days to get to the smaller meet at the Pomona Pomona we would we would rack up generally and AH make a couple three weeks a nice checks and that would kind of carry us over the struggle from day to day in the game week to week and meet to meet back in the originally you know the old days it was it wasn't easy it was that easy at all it's a high wire risk yes it's gotta be it's gotta be even tough now I mean we see what you know a couple of days a week and so places as you know I for the lower level guys short field I I can't even imagine having a lower level jock now we make any money my one my first wife Kidding Wonderful Wonderful Woman Ron Ron knows her and yeah and she knew nothing about me and the only thing she knew is there was a horse that I had Jockey Ron Hansen and there was a horse and they missed the co-leader trained by Leonard Dorfman he's a very fast doors and he won like four in a row and Oh my wife would ever asked me about raising is when Mr Colin you're gonNA rally just can't run every week right the owner the owner was asking the same question what at least you knew you out good possibility of a cheque right it's funny there's one other moment that you know I was thinking of the other day that the way you know the way things work out but we'll talk about the Breeders Cup and and I was asked a question I caught him on TV the other day he was asked the question about the first Breeders Cup and you know what people fought that day and run together say obviously at Hollywood Park Nineteen eighty-four yeah and and and you know we we were looking at each other like this is never going to happen again million dollars million dollar racists where are they going where's this you've got to come from a million dollars in one thousand nine hundred eighty four was and they had seven it was like skin and classes I don't know what it was what it was worth at that time three million maybe might have been through but it might have been three I don't know but it was a number that we weren't used to the numbers look like misprint I mean and then for the be lucky enough to win one of the races that's like wow I thought like I made a million dollars on that that one day just winning the the first traces that was that was where I was going with the first with my comment is that lowers the agent you know everybody knows about all is readers cops Yeah Garrett Gomez all those guys but Ron warm one of those first breeders Cups Fernando Foro for John Gosden royal heroine and and you know that was like kicking the money like Air I think he'd be like give you a number about that I I just I printed a bunch of interesting little things off I'll actually put the link now that occurs to me you know the public you can look at the media guide anytime at the at the Breeders Cup site this is GonNa this is GonNa blow your mind nine thousand nine hundred eighty.

"You by the way swin cash. Two time Olympic gold medalist played a Yukon all that kind of stuff. She had a great tweet on Zion situation. And I think this is really really smart. She said honestly Zion size. He needs to change up. And where LeBron shoe they're literally built for a guy his size. He goes on this. She goes on to say, I remember after my back surgery. I changed my shoes because of the shop impacted to my back, try different styles. Some didn't work the freak accident sucks. I pray. He's okay. But that's a great point. I mean, what have we said all along about Zion? Williamson he looks at eighteen like LeBron looks at thirty four right. And if there's a shoe built to make sure that there's a more sturdy base around a larger dude, that's a great point by swin cash. Listen, I don't know that sport. I know from. Football of what I warned the different ones in basketball. I don't know about the different bay are different sneaker for the bigger person. That's that's that's their world. Will they know? And I'm sure that's a very interesting tweet. I would love somebody in the shoe industry or players to expound upon that talk about the different shoes at how they're made. Well, I think we'll have Sean farnum a little bit later on right? He can help us break down that a little bit. Not that we're not we're saying he's not Zion Williamson size. But obviously he's played and knows the difference in the shoe again. This was a Paul George shoe, Paul George six nine listed at two twenty. Right. So not not as big as Zion. As much torque on that you and your stopping and pivoting as Jay Williams said there's never been a ROY Williams also said that there's never been a college basketball player like Zion Williamson. Okay. So getting back to the discussion we were having before the break going back to the Pittsburgh Steelers. And it just seems to not stop there. It's just incredible. So we covered the Tonio Brown situation. And Kevin Colbert's comments about Ben Rothlisberger. And then there's decision to put any tag whatsoever on Lebanon belt to me. This is the smart move. Agreed. Because look it you could try and match him with the transition tag. But you weren't going to match it anyway. And then you wouldn't get anything in return. They have a chance now Mike depending on the the contract that he signs to get up to a third round pick for Levy on who by the way. Let's not forget levels. Not a first round pick. He was the second round pick. Exactly. Right. Michigan state. So to me, this is absolutely the smartest play for the Steelers. They're going to let them walk. If someone wants to pay him, that's fine and wonderful, and they're gonna get back a really decent draft pick in return because again to understand the other side of it, the only tag they were going put put on the transition tonight. And if they made an offer for that and another team came in or another team made an offer and the the Pittsburgh Steelers didn't want him. Match that. And let them go to the other team. They would get nothing in return nothing here at least they can pull out possibly a third round draft pick. And also if they put the transition tag on them that number whether it's fourteen fifteen million, whatever until something happened would count on their cap once the new football year starts after March thirteenth, right? So that would be on their books that they would have to deal with now they don't have to deal with that making him a free agent getting some back. So I agree. I think it was absolutely the right move. And it'll be interesting the market because you saw from lady on lady and was looking for fifty mill within the first two years of a new contract going off the Todd Gurley exactly at forty five million guaranteed last year before the season. Yeah. So that will be interesting. I don't I you know, that that may be you know from. From the movie taken with the with the kidnapper saying to leeann, Lisa, good luck. Exactly. I don't know if you're going to get fifty mill in the first two years of your deal. He should get a good deal. I completely agree with that. But how high it goes will be interesting to see. Well, there's a couple of things that are going to be interesting here. First and foremost because basically the last deal he turned down from Pittsburgh was essentially thirty million dollars in Garrett right money. They were going to offer him a contract that was guaranteed for the first two years, and that was essentially thirty million dollars to take it out from there Todd Gurley got forty five Ryan guaranteed. But then we saw what happened toward the end of the season were girly got hurt. And then he was limited and C J Anderson came off the dirt, basically street. Yup. Another one of the raider gifts to play off teasing and he'd be balled out for the Rams going into the playoffs. And then obviously all the way up to the Super Bowl and Gurley was limited in the Super Bowl for whatever reason. Whether it was injury J C J Anderson did come out and say heat. I thought that Gurley was still more hurt than not hurt on that situation. And but we haven't heard of any kind of scope surgery. So we have not if that team truly just split time than I would completely disagree with their thought process of doing that. I would still lean toward he was hurt more than than people showed. But we may never know that. So essentially he gave up fourteen and a half million as an insurance policy to guarantee him over thirty million in guaranteed money. So the parameters are probably between thirty and forty five here because that's what girly got. I don't get more than girly. I don't think so either. So is he getting more than the thirty guarantee that he would have gotten from the Steelers? So which he took he walked away from fifteen did he walked away from fifteen. I I don't think the market is going to be what he wanted to players can be unrealistic at times and what they want. But I think what he is looking for. I would be surprised if he gets even though he is someone if I need a running back. I would look at him and make him an offer because I think he is a hell of a back. But I think the market in the money may not be as much as he thinks it's going to be all it takes his one team interested and then another team have a sniff of interest. Maybe he will get what he wants. But there's probably four out there, and we can get into that discussion a little bit later coming up. How it all went wrong for Duke less than.

"All right. Let's do this. How are you? What the fuckers what the fuck buddies? What the fuck it Delic's? What's happening? I'm Marc Maron. This is my podcast WT f-. Welcome to it. How's it going? How's the game for you yesterday? I have to be honest. And I've said this before without condescension. It means nothing to me. I I should say meant nothing to me. But I am recording this Sunday hours before the big game. That many of you spent your day enjoying yelling about eating things judging commercials. You know, armchair quarterbacking whatever, you know, doing opioids and missing half of it. I I don't know. I don't know what you're what you're Super Bowl day looked like, but I I I spent the day cooking. And I if everything went as planned yesterday because it hasn't happened yet. I had a little birthday party for Sara painter here at the house, and I cooked a lot of Indian food during the day. I like to cook, man. I I mean, I I know you know, that I do if you listen to this. If you're still with me, but I like to when you you have to cook for people and you want to try something new. The whole the whole process of reading recipes putting them together in your head figuring out how they are supposed to work what it's gonna look like what it's going to taste like very exciting because you can spend hours doing that. And if you make it very complicated recipe, and he's been hours doing it in your very excited about it. And then it doesn't case quite good. The intensity of the disappointment is profound to the point where sometimes you just throw the entire pot of whatever you made right in the garbage disposal. You know, like you're getting back at it. I've had that happen. Did. I mention Anderson pack is on the show today. Anderson pack is a hip hop artist. As you know, hip, hop is not necessarily my thing. I've nothing against it. I if you look in my music back before apple music where you actually had to upload all your shit. I've got a lot of hip hop in there. But it's it's pretty mainstream stuff. A lot of. Gonyea lot, Jay z. Got some ferrall in there. But got I go back. I got some cypress hills and ghetto boys. I got the Wu Tang. You know, I got a I've got I definitely, you know, have stuff, you know, I had open Mike eagle here to sort of school me on NIA newer, kind of alternative hip hop. I I'm not adverse to it. I enjoy it. I listened to it. I've got all the Kendrick records. Yeah. I mean, I listen. But it's not fundamentally my go-to stuff. Got some Gil, Scott Heron. Not you theoretically, not class not hip hop. But inspirational right kind of moved in that direction kind of you know, what I'm saying. But like, as you know, when I talked to the beach, you beastie, boys. I don't know my history. I don't know any of your work came from or or how. But I enjoy it so Anderson pack, I actually did a thing with him. I had to apologize to them for that. He was at an event that I hosted for flee over at the Silverlake conservatory he was the headlining act, and I didn't know who he was. And I believe I brought him up as Andrew pack. So I'm going to set that straight. With Mr. pack. But the fortunate thing about having Anderson or having the opportunity to have him on. I mean, he he is nominated for best rap performance at the Grammy awards, which is this Sunday February tenth for his single bubbling and the the new album Oxnard is out now, but he's only got like four or five records out..
"j. c j anderson" Discussed on Chicago's Business Authority
"This Saturday. So if you're thinking about maybe making a wager on Super Bowl, fifty three better get on a quick for this Kerry. What's the show right after New England beat Kansas City? The opening line on the game. The immediate line on the game was RAMSAR point favorite. Within seventeen minutes. Seventeen minutes of a line opening as the Rams is a point favored New England was a two and a half point favorite in seventeen minutes. You know, it's money has to go down on team to flip the line four points in seventeen minutes. The line is now moved up to three and a half points. And according to the Mirage. Ninety six percent of the money that has been wagered on the Super Bowl based on the point spread is on New England. Ninety six percent of the money wagered on the point spread. Is our New England. And that line is going up up up. Now, here's here's the thing that I really have to take a look at when you look up up of these two teams. A lot can be made about experience. But there has never been a Super Bowl ever. Not even close to compare the Super Bowl of experience of one team versus another team. Tom Brady alone is played in eighth Super Bowls. He has played an eight Super Bowls. And remember this is New England's third straight Super Bowl and therefore Super Bowl in the last five years. But if we just use Brady's eight Super Bowls, right? The entire ram roster combined has played in five C J. C J Anderson is played in to keep to leave. A key to league is played in one Brandin cooks played in one. Yup. And Sam shields with Green Bay. Yeah. That's it. Now, I know you didn't get to a Super Bowl. You came close. Am close. But there there are I'll put it this way. I have covered. Well, technically twenty-six Super Bowls half. Thank god. I won't be going Atlanta this year. Yeah. And I'll I'll tell you. Why? Here. Here's what happens. So you get down to Super Bowl week. And if you never been there before as a player. Yeah. That circus day that has been tempered a little bit. But it's still a circus day. And and that first day is sort of exciting. You know, it's like, hey, you know, we all these people, and it's. Yeah. So that first day is sort of cool because you really get the feel at haywar here at the Super Bowl. Right. But that's not the end of it. The real killer for these players comes on Wednesday and Thursday. That's one they have to show up for mandatory media media gatherings at their team hotel right now, I've attended those for many many many many years if you ever want to get a player that actually is in the game. You can't just sit on radio radio. Rony gonna do your crap. I mean, that's just a waste of time on radio row. You got to get on the buses early in the morning and bus out to the team hotel, and they set up the players, right? And they grudgingly sit there and answer question after question after question, and they have to do two days in a row, so all of this extracurricular stuff's going on. And then you get the game day. Mhm pre-game is extended and a half time is endless super extended. Yep. So all of this is new to a lot of teams, and it will affect somebody, especially if you've ever been through before because there is no experience ever in your career, but they will match a Super Bowl. England. Yeah. You know, I wonder what the records are presumed that are there for the first time is it is like a monumental change. I know it it it doesn't. I mean, there have been teams that haven't had a lot of experience of being teas, but there's never been a Super Bowl close to this. Right. I mean New England again is in their third straight Super Bowl fourth of the last five years, which is just ridiculous. I mean, New England this is the first time ever that New England is played in three straight Super Bowls have to be honest. I was actually I was actively rooting against him just because of them being for being there so often, right? I mean, I actually feel bad about it. Because why why don't we why don't why don't we want to see a dynasty like that something that's probably never going to happen. Again. Why don't we want to see them in it and be successful? And. And have I think the majority of people wanted to see candidacy city win. Kennedy depends. But just because they're plan the patriots. I'll tell you who really wanted to see the cheese and the saints. Take a brokers. This was the worst possible scenario for a Super Bowl matchup. Why? Well, New England they don't sell super Super Bowl tickets. They're they're done with that. Right. And the Rams are on the other side of the country are going to have a ton of people out of LA making the long trip to Atlanta, which by the way, it's going to be cold and wet cold wet and crowded and crowded last place, you want to be meanwhile, you had a perfect scenario. Said's Jeeves Kansas City and saints fans there in the middle of the country Atlanta's right there. Ticket prices for the Super Bowl are the lowest. They've been in years last year. The tickets are going for about six grand each. Yeah. They're down to four grand this year. Really? And it's going to go down from this point on. So there were a lot of people that thought this is the worst possible scenario for a Super Bowl matchup. You know, talking about New England and their dynasty. Yeah. It does. Raise a good question though. New England has done something that has never been done in the history of the NFL in that they have dominated two decades. You know, we have the bears in the forties of brands in the fifties. The Packers and the sixty the Steelers in the seventies. We had the forty Niners in the eighties where the Cowboys in the nineties, right? It is who straight decades now for New England. Yeah. So your perspective. Carey is a former player and as an NFL fan. Has New England's dominance over the last two decades been a plus or minus for the NFL. It's the hunt is one hundred percent in the minds because you sell this league, fills and it actually. Every year. They still this every year it is on entity every year. So I ain't different every every team has a chance every year. Like, you said that that's what they sell. That's what they sell you as as the consumer as outside personnel out the league. Like, you gotta tune in because anybody can win this league. And for the most part that's true for every other every other pro the NFC AFC, you know, the new is going to be there. And I think that's it's it actually it it hurts the game. But also from an individual teams, then point where we'll just talk about New England and the greatness, I think we also need to appreciate that too. Because like I said, we're not going to see that and probably never going to happen again this degree so you can take two different ways. But me personally, I think is the negative. Well. But it's good to have a villain is an end up. It is and the Wayland is definitely a Bill, right? Because Earl still a lot of people that say they have won a single legitimate championship. Yeah. I mean you've been caught cheating twice. So what's this and going back even their early Super Bowl wins? I remember the Carolina Panthers. They still have a lot of questions about what happened in that game. A lot of questions the eagles have questions about their loss. Rams have quest every single team. They played things have happened during the course of the game. Like what happened there? What what exactly are they doing? Right. And then, you know, the they show the before and actors Tom Brady, what's this training regimen. He's got going on right? Who is this guy? Who is this mystery guy bend? Nobody else knows about that. Nobody knows about that. You know, first of all he was not going to travel with the patriots. But now he's back on the team. What's going on here? Yeah. But they are the villain. And I I'm I'm not so sure I think what's going to happen when New England when this is finally over whenever it is five years from now. I mean, if we're sitting here five years from now and forty six year old Tom Brady is still in the Super Bowl. I mean, I don't know what to say about that. But whenever this does in. I think in retrospect, people are going to look back and say, you know, I sort of missed that having that evil empire involved seemingly every single year in the Super Bowl. Very interesting to see what the ratings will be for the Super Bowl again LA. We talked about this entire time. Yeah. The LA market is still not one hundred percent in on the NFL. We don't know get the Rams being there is actually going to change that dynamic even the Rams have admitted. Yeah. That they they were hoping maybe this would you know, sort of move along quicker. But all right. Well, we'll get much more into this. Plus another rule change. I want to get to and Alex Martinez is gonna join us on the other side. But right now, let's find out. What is trending Friday's here. Hombre? Hey, guys, what's going on? Let's go full court press was some college basketball and Duke was tested early. They survey defense register..
"j. c j anderson" Discussed on KNBR The Sports Leader
"It's odd to me that we're getting this conversation on the AFC side and not on the NFC side. They were asking Patrick Mahomes, if he thinks this is a passing of the torch a changing of the guard in the AFC, which is a tough question to ask the younger player. You're certainly not gonna ask Tom Brady that, but why are we not talking about that with Gerry Goffin in drew Brees? Why do we think drew Brees who turned forty last week is is going to continue playing at a high level? But Tom Brady what I got. I got a bone to pick with that. And makes no sense. It makes no sense. We're not asking Jerry doff this question. But we are asking Patrick Mahomes. Do you believe this is a changing of the guard? There's still a long ways to go. I mean, I'm I'm a young young guy. He's done so much in this league is still doing it to this day. And so I mean, he he he's gonna play for some more years to come. So I mean, I'm always strive to do some of the things that he's done with the Super Bowls that he's won. I mean that's the ultimate goal. And I mean, he's he's not trying to pass it pass the torch anytime soon, I mean, he's he's played at a high level this year, and I expect him to keep playing at this level for at least another couple of years. Yeah. I expect that to not three five two checks in and says, I'm ignoring spy gate, and he's a cheater always Willoughby. A cheater, no integrity. You know, it's just that. We know that he cheated. You know, what I mean like you to tell me that they were the only team cheat in for. How could they have done this and cheated under the spotlight for the last twenty years and still get to the champion is telling me they're standing there in the spotlight when everybody's watching them on deflate gate on spy gate on whatever's going on I and again, I'm not saying, it's okay? I'm just saying you are not going to convince me that the patriots are the only team in the league that has ever done anything like this. They're the team that keeps winning because they have the best quarterback, most coaches will tell you what we're we're we're gonna do. This is what we're gonna do. We don't care if you practice. You can the Packers are going to run a sweep on you. The Steelers are going to run trap. So go ahead and film. This is what we're gonna do. So I mean that there were patriots did that it's no big thing you're going to get Gainesville. Anyway, I don't know I walk through a team before the Super Bowl is a little bit different than Dame film. I get that like back in the what was it the Rams Super Bowl early on one of the early? Maybe the Panthers Super Bowl that was the spy gate thing. I thought that was knows the Rams one. It was the first one it was the greatest show on turf that would have been the first one. I tell you what dude I had an option I would have been video practice. To be out there facing curl Warner and Tori Holt Isaac Bruce L, no still Faulk in the backfield is the other they had another Ricky parole. They had a couple of receivers. They just that were. I'd be taping this practice to Dave. No question. Call me, no integrity. If you want I want to win Super Bowls, man. That's all I care about Sean McVay cares about two which is why he went out. He made the change at running back, adding C J Anderson to the backfield C, J Anderson, of course, out of Vallejo here. The cow product made a great statement yesterday a baller. Yes. Jason baller. Thank you. Call shanahan. We got there. Give me one more time. Baller? J C J Anderson made a statement yesterday where he said, I think I'm the freshest running back in the league snap because of his threat. It's not because of the clothes. He's wearing because he says I was sitting on my ass for for half the season. He says I feel like a running back who hasn't hit his by week yet. And I think there's something to be said about that a fresh running back when everybody else has been playing for twenty weeks. This guy has not been taken a beating on his body. I know we're seeing these a little doughy your he's a little more doughy. What did they say the thicker than a snicker now is C J Anderson C, J Anderson? Here we go. Here's a Sean McVay on Todd Gurley and the impact that he sat on janitors. He's asked about you know, how we're doing our the running game. He's always quick to give credit to everybody else. He's definitely recognize what a good job CJ's done to help our football team. And I think when your best players had that mindset as far as it's about the team, and it's about how can we best win a football game. And I think he knows that being able to stay fresh while he's still our guy. But also then given CJ an opportunity to make some plays is best for the team right now. And. And I think that's a large credit to our leadership and anti being one of those key leaders. Yeah. The running game going to be a major factor for actually all these teams on Saturday contained Williams Qatar on Sunday condemning Williams continue his run as the chiefs running back and Sony Michelle and James why do what they've been doing? I think the answer is. Yes on that front because the chiefs defense while forced fumbles or they picked the ball off. They do not stop the Rutgers stop scores really fair effectively at all. And then, of course, on the other side big two-headed monsters in that NFC champ game. Do you get with the saints Camerin Ingram? And then with the Rams you get girly and C J Anderson a bunch of good running backs a bunch of match ups and all stuff we'll keep an eye on on Sunday. But tonight, we're going to have our is down in Los Angeles at the staple center. Warriors into Marcus cousins, vacant is debut. We gotta touch on some of this stuff as far as what Steve courageously yesterday. When he came on Tolbert and Lund here on some great comments, even comparing Kevin Durant to Michael, Jordan. We'll talk about it when we return to the leadoff spot on the sports leader remember court to be a forward pass. It's got to go forward. NBR's San Francisco. A Cumulus station. Hello..
