"Fees required and will soon let developers access the rapidly growing lightning network as developers begin to make use of taproot assets it should result in far less chain congestion leaving space to onboard the masses to bitcoin so that's a pretty dense two paragraphs on the the mindset the the benefits and kind of the focus of taproot assets in comparison to something like brc20 tokens and i hope it just wipes them out very very quickly because and i also hope to see stable coins because as much as stable coins are 100 credit instruments and i don't want to confuse that but dollar stable coins all right great like this is actually how you can get especially if there is any integration with the infrastructure at large or potentially you could especially with the lightning network is if you could actually send dollar stable coins like if the stable coin itself actually gets adoption and like a store or something except stable coins well then it benefits it really really benefits and increases the value of all liquidity on the lightning network because you're transferring any value that people want to exchange ends up being transferred and owned by keys even credit instruments which is a really really powerful element that the liquidity on the lightning network will be used to transfer value in a ubiquitous way and then regardless of its credit nature outside of its credit nature the transfer itself is permissionless it's on an open network it's not through an intermediary and that really changes the dynamic of being able to exchange with someone like being able to buy and sell apple stock being able to send fiat overseas like it really starts to just break down all of these fiat barriers in an incredible way and the only thing that is left is the the credit risk of the institution themselves and the jurisdictional the government risk which essentially means that the only people who can kill it are the

"For example, a user could mint three new tranches of three different assets at once, paying only a single miner fee, and then sell all the newly minted assets via a single VPSBT to a buyer paying with a different Taproot Asset, instead of making a new on -chain transaction for each asset transfer. We want to empower Bitcoin developers to be excellent stewards of chain space without needing to do anything extra, and these new features accomplish exactly that. Additional Stability and Scalability Improvements Finally this release includes a host of scalability and stability improvements that provide a secure and stable foundation for developers seeking scale. A few examples include better integer overflow prevention and batched APIs to support large amounts of concurrent users. Additionally, asset metadata was optimized for future transferability, allowing developers to include up to 800 kilobytes of metadata per asset upon minting, but only requiring a hash of that metadata to be included in each subsequent on -chain transfer. The developer community is already requesting comments on how to structure this Taproot Asset metadata. Exciting to see! Path to Stablecoins on Lightning With this release we are furthering the ultimate goal of Taproot Assets, enabling Lightning to be a multi -asset network, and specifically enabling stablecoin support for users in emerging markets. Once we have finished the payment channel portions of the protocol, these users will open Taproot Asset channels with a unit of account of their choice that plug in at the edges and interoperate with the existing Lightning network. Assets won't need to rebuild the components of a liquidity network by bootstrapping a new ecosystem of nodes and liquidity. Instead, the Taproot Assets protocol leverages the existing network effects of Bitcoin and the Lightning network, along with the infrastructure that's been built up over the last five years securing nearly 5 ,500 BTC allocated to the network today as a global routing currency. For routing nodes in the core of the network, the Taproot Assets EdgeNode model should mean more volume with no upgrades required as multi -asset transactions route through BTC. For users at the edge of the network, it should mean all the technological benefits of the global reach with access to their preferred unit of account. We not only envision developers integrating Taproot Assets into existing experiences for merchants, creators, and all of today's users of the Lightning network growing their total addressable market, but also building brand new experiences that make it easy for brand

"Taproot Assets PSBT Usage First, partially signed bitcoin transactions are the community standard defining how developers can allow their users to easily build, sign, and verify bitcoin transactions. PSBT's are broadly supported across bitcoin wallets, allowing for seamless interoperability, and we're very excited to announce that Taproot Assets is joining this ecosystem of interoperable bitcoin software by supporting PSBT's by default. Importantly, this support also extends to purely off -chain Taproot Assets transactions, with a novel structure we are calling Virtual Partially Signed Bitcoin Transactions, or VPSBT's. VPSBT's operate the same way that bitcoin PSBT's work, but handle all of Taproot Assets protocol intricacies, so developers can keep building on their best layer. VPSBT's are used within Taproot Assets to create an off -chain transfer, or state transition. Transactors will pass their VPSBT's back and forth to generate the necessary witnesses and inclusion or exclusion proofs. Once final, these VPSBT's are anchored to the bitcoin chain by compiling the asset trees into Taproot outputs, then signing a PSBT transaction that commits to those outputs. It's important to note that VPSBT's simply add extra Taproot Assets asset tree information to the bitcoin PSBT's bitcoin developers are used to. With this latest release, developers are now able to integrate VPSBT's into their existing applications to abstract away all the low -level complexity around the Taproot Assets structure. This allows them to focus on building amazing experiences for their users, instead of on murkel -some sparse murkel trees. We're excited to see VPSBT's in on -chain marketplaces, hardware wallets, and lightning channels soon. Universes for Maximum Scalability Next, Universes have arrived with APIs. As a refresher, Taproot Assets universes allow users to download and verify Taproot Assets issuance and transaction data. They are not required for Taproot Assets to function, because transactions can be sent with purely peer -to -peer delivery. But they dramatically improve user

"How did you get out of that of that That of low point. Let's say well. I think you're absolutely right. I think that having outside contacts and a life outside of grad school is so important. And it i mean it just never happened for me. I was very social person in grad school. We you know. My cohort was very social with each other. But i think there's a point at which you just have to have people outside of that world you have to for perspective if nothing else and it's really hard. Yeah of course. It's hard to do to grad school. Where where are you going to look for people you know. What are you going to do go to play. And then like just introduce yourself to the person you're sitting next to you know unless you it almost requires i think you have to maybe look activities or look for something some kind of group classes or something to meet someone but usually you're so busy and tied up in your own work. You don't feel like there's room for that for me. Moving to austin was really the thing. Because i had a ready made. I mean my family is in texas. I it's my old familiar places. I was excited to be there and everywhere i turn. There's a you know either a familiar face or the promise of one And good memories just memories of a time. When i was a person who did not care about this stuff that was consuming me in grad school. So i mean. I think it's i think there are a lot of things wrapped up in this but one of the things is that that people talk a lot about and i think it's true. Is that when you're in grad school. There is not a lot of Credence given to the world outside. You know the idea is that this is the most important thing..

"I was interested in and have always wanted to write novels. So interviewing these authors. I would often start to sneak in questions how you know how. How did you get your first novel. And i learned a lot just by being around them and asking questions the very interesting and because i come from the stem side of things you know transition for people coming from some looks like the like industry or medical writing for me at least if you like. There's a straight path to to a non-academic job to an academic career but I am. I must confess that for me for me because i haven't experienced it The the humanities and the you know your english english studies it. It's not as easy for me to see how these pets go. I've also learned in conversations that more people stay in or around academia but it seems like you kind of a just to clarify. You started started doing this while he was still in graduate school more really now. No i in fact what happened. Is i graduated in twenty ten again. I quit remember ten or eleven. It's been a while. But i one of the reason. I can't remember very well. Because i had already moved down to austin which I i you know i went to grad school in chicago. Austin was always my hometown. It's where i went to undergraduate. I had a lot of friends who stayed in austin. It's very pleasant place to be was always kind of my happy place so toward the end of my dissertation. When i was really struggling in grad school and with motivation and depression. I just decided that. I was going to move to austin and try to finish their. Because i had finished all my commitments teaching commitments. And so i was already living in austin and living with my you know then future husband now current husband yet. Something thirty living with my husband and feeling a lot happier and i was able to finish..

"I'm really happy to have you on the show. And i really want to talk about your journey and how it led to your writing career into your latest book. Bad habits that is a thriller set in kind of a parallel universe to the one you experience going through grad school. Yeah that is often the way. I talk about the book because it's set in a program somewhat similar in certain ways to the one that i went through but The plot of the book is about a character named mac We meet mac when she's at the top of her game. She's professor as sort of newly minted professor rising quickly in the ranks not yet having tenure but Soaring to the top and She's just keynote at a big conference when she runs into her old friend unexpectedly in the hotel. Lobby and gwen whitney as we soon find out was her sort of Best friend growing up and they were in the program together the graduate program and something has happened in they have become estranged and we don't know what so when she meets gwen. This immediately takes her back to this territory. She might rather have forgotten and she spends a the course of the book. Trying to ascertain whether gwen knows what really happened together when they were in the program. And we do that through flashbacks. So we see her. Most of the takes place in that graduate program where we see how catastrophe strikes. Okay okay and and so. It's it's a traveled back to grad school to or it. It sort of goes back. It starts back with my ex childhood. Actually we it's a it gives you kind of the background on her family and how she came to meet gwen and sort of she comes from matt comes from a harder. Hardscrabble background a working class background where graduate school would be very distant from her goals and gwen sort of enters her life in her high school years and is the sort of glamorous from a cultured and refined family. She has money. she's beautiful and she is extremely smart and always seems to know where you know. The best place to go is so because of her. You know max life changes and she fixes all her aspirations of getting out onto this one friend and sort of ends up working really hard to change herself and become someone who can get into this kind of top program so by the time they get into this program together they have a lot of history already but they get their sort of ripe for intrigue. I guess especially. Mac who's really vulnerable to the cult of personality professors to the manipulation and visser backstabbing and You know Extreme ambition part of the book is watching how that happens And yeah and and i think of it as a making of a bill in story I loved villains. That doesn't give too much way. But i think very quickly you start to see that mac. Although from hopefully understandable motives begins behaving very badly in this environment. Okay son super super interesting. We're going to get back to two elements of the book In our conversation. Now we've been talking about mac now. Talks about amy gentry so pc in english and now You're writing. You're you're doing book reviews..

"Make yourself comfortable if your regular thank you for being here for another conversation about the phd this week. On papa phd. I'm discussing a fictional book. Three set within academia with author any entry in our conversation. I talked with amy about her personal experience. Going through a phd in the humanities and about what aspects of that experience inspired her to write bad habits. You talk about the preparation for for different paths. That are not academic in grad school. And i would say in humanities phd programs until very very recently since i left even There was nothing because there just aren't it's not like there are job postings for people with with english phd's job postings for people with english phd's are english professor. That's it no one else wants you to have I mean at best. They don't care one way or the other but it often seems to count almost as a detriment and the humanities because people think while you're over educated you don't really want to be here And i think that's you know. Changing now i mean i had a professor at university of chicago who has really been working with people at at the university of chicago to make sure that there's career counseling for people coming out of those types of graduate program. So i know there is change happening at the same time. I think it's really hard to argue that a hd is actually necessary for any of those paths by the time. Someone has come six years through a program that has battered them financially and emotionally almost certainly hoping to be a professor at the end and then find out at the end that there's no there's no ring there's no there's nothing to grab there because the jobs just aren't there i mean yeah i mean by that point see career. Can you file a lawsuit if the COVID vaccine causes you harm?

"Take a moment and slowdown here. Challenging the constitutionality of a vaccine mandate is one type of legal action suing over an injury from a vaccine or an adverse effect is another type of legal action related but not the same a constitutional claim normally with a bodily injury. Person would bring a claim for damages in state court vaccine. Injuries are rare. But they do happen. The centers for disease control and prevention issue warnings about vaccines. I talked with a half dozen doctors for this story. Here is one of them. Talking about the first rotavirus vaccine to hit the market when i was in residency The rotavirus vaccine came out um which is a a virus that causes diarrhea and kids and after they released it they found that there were very small percentage of kids. Were getting Necrotizing necrotizing client s so their was getting not getting enough blood supply because of various stuff but they found it out within a very short period of time and so the vaccine was removed from the market. Gone another dr paul off. It is director of the vaccine education center at children's hospital of philadelphia. He co invented different. Rotavirus vaccine one. That's in use today. His motivation to make vaccine goes back to his childhood. He had club feet when he got an operation. Well he will always remember what he saw a polio ward. And i remember those children and traction those children in our lungs. I think it certainly drove me to pediatrics. And it drove me to child. Advocacy's bashes about childhood that become air drives as adults covid. Nineteen is a devastating virus. That is especially serious threat for a certain segment of the population. The elderly so far the covid nineteen vaccine appears to be effective vaccine of saved their lives and for the most part of saved our lives safely for the most part. Vaccines are safe but not for all vaccines help. One group of vulnerable people but could possibly harm another vulnerable group. Recent news reports have revealed that some people are reluctant to get the covid nineteen vaccines because of potential adverse reactions. A few moments ago we introduced vaccine lawyer rene gentry today. She is the director of the vaccine injury litigation clinic. She identifies some kinds of injuries. Vaccines can cause. It has everything from a nfl access to encephalopathy in death. The majority of the injuries that we see today are the shoulder injury. related vaccine administration and gambari syndrome following the flu shot. But it runs the gamut. We see immunological or injuries. We see neurological injuries occasionally cardiovascular injuries and things like that gentry represents people who have suffered an adverse effect. She says as soon as people hear that they automatically characterize her and her clients or rather mischaracterize. Once you save vaccine injury automatically characterized as anti vaccine people. Say that all the time your client back to my all. My clients got vaccinated. They're not anti backs. i like. They got back. Stated i'm on antibac- i've been vaccinated mary. You just explained that lawsuits for bodily injuries. Normally take place in state court but vaccine. Injuries are not treated that way. An individual with a vaccine injury cannot sue. The drug company for damages. Drug companies are immune from such lawsuits. You're not allowed to sue a pharmaceutical company for a vaccine injury for covid vaccine instead. Those claims use a different process. An injured person must go through the v. I c. p. the vaccine injury compensation program gentry says vaccine court as it sometimes called came about in the nineteen eighties after some children develop seizures because of the dtp shot it requires filing a petition with the united states court of federal claims. It's an actual court an actual court setting. You have a right to counsel you have the right to appeal your other evidence and things like that. If the person proves a vaccine injury they receive no fault. Compensation pay the claim without admitting blames caps on pain and suffering. And things like that. But it's full medical care for the future of past etc but only some vaccines are covered under the v. Icp covid nineteen vaccine is not one of them again gentry. The covid vaccine is considered a countermeasure and by the prep act that was established by congress in the early two thousands. She said countermeasure countermeasures program is a different plan. It limits legal liability for a product device. The government puts in place during a public health crisis. The co vaccine was put in that program instead of the vaccine program. is a much worse program. There's no right to counsel. There's no right of appeal. it's not a legal process. It's a one year statute of limitations. Is you know there's no pain and suffering. It's it's it's a terrible program. In other words. If mandates come down and someone suffers an adverse effect that person has little legal recourse if any and with the in nineteen vaccine. There are still a lot of unknowns. That has another component to mandates with so many question marks. Is there enough information. Does it offer lifelong immunity or will it be a seasonal vaccine. Will the vaccine against mutations of this virus are there long term effects of the vaccine. Who knows we're in a real time epidemiological. Study

He has had countless meetings with officers and others to understand their challenges and improve their working conditions. Louisville police move to fire 2 officers involved in Breonna Taylor raid

"Two more Louisville police officers will likely be fired in connection with the fatal shooting of Briana Taylor back in March. Both officers have administrative hearings with the police chief in the coming days. I'm gonna a lot he of member station W F. Pl in Louisville reports. The two officers each had key roles in the Briana Taylor shooting. Detective Joshua Jane's acquired the warrant that led officers to her door after midnight and Detective Miles. Cosgrove fired what the FBI described as the fatal shot. Both have been on paid leave for months. James is accused of falsifying parts of the affidavit for that warrant. While Cosgrove is reportedly accused of violating use of force policies. Thomas Clay, a lawyer for Jane's, says his client did nothing wrong. Even though James admitted part of his sworn affidavit was quote incorrect. Places his client provided sufficient evidence to support the warrant. I think the outcome has already been predetermined. I think effected change is going to be terminated. And we're prepared to do what needs to be done in order to appeal that decision. A lawyer for Cosgrove declined to comment. This all began when police entered Taylor's apartment by force is part of a botched a drug raid. Taylor's boyfriend, fearing they were intruders fired up. Police police fired back killing Taylor. Investigators never found anything illegal in the apartment. The potential terminations of Cosgrove in jeans come after months of protests and cries for justice. But the fact that it took so long sends a message about accountability. If other charges criminal charges come up, That would be great, but you can't walk him out until you have taken that first step. Like many others, the grand jury is keen to see what the ongoing federal investigation into the incident produces. The FBI's Louisville Field office has been looking into the shooting since May. "Up next we meet one of ireland's finance jeff's kp mcmahon based in galway the michelin starred chefs. Culinary accomplishments include any restaurant and anne robotic cookery school as well as his. Release the irish cookbook. One of the most beautiful cookbook releases off. Twenty twenty till's the story of irish feud and how it has evolved over thousands of years showcasing the richness and variety of food from this green islands with its five hundred authentic recipes. The author jp mcmahon jones me in the studio back in march to discuss the book on how irish food is about so much more than just lamb stew and potatoes as was initially. It was a bit apprehensive because there are many many irish food cookbooks in the twentieth century. But i suppose. I found that a lot of them had been written for an irish audience or perhaps people travelling to ireland. It was important for me to try and give an international dimension and was one of the reasons why publishing with fight on made a difference because they have a global reach and it was in order to try and change the perception of irish food. I think also because we have a restaurant called a near which is will mission star restaurant. We've had it for ten years and we've been investigating irish food for ten years and i felt a lot of the things that we've been doing over. Those ten years weren't in cookbooks. And some of them are very old things like using seaweed using wild food in different ways. And i wanted i suppose that a record of that and that was the start i think the initial for doing it was a had traveled a lot to different places and taking part in chef events and i realized that are affected that we had really good produce in ireland. I'm we just weren't singing about it now. I took part in events in mexico in america and canada in europe and we were always celebrating the cuisine of a particular area. And as why are we doing this. And why aren't we kind of like saying well. We have really good food where shellfish or or whatever so. They were kind of the driving forces behind the book. Now what do you think. Ireland has been so modest about its food on its culinary legacy heritage. I think there's a certain humbleness modesty to irish people and they're probably not the best people at selling themselves like i think we're frustrated capitalists and we want to do things but at the same time we don't want to come across as being bombastic. I think that's worn element. I think the second element is the famine and the subsequent diaz before that happens. I think that impacted irish food particularly of the twentieth century and on the one hand you had people that did not have that much access to food in art and even though there was a lot of food and then the second part you had people who did have access that is food. Who were i think. Predominantly from the anglo-irish irish element and some has be would call the west brits so the people who would be associated with england and these people who had food. I think we're not considered to be irish often. This kind of tension between the tradition that it goes all the way back at least a thousand years between people on the island and people who have food and people don't have food on who we consider irish what we consider irishness tried to take a very broad perspective on it. And so when you go into the archives of the recipe books that you find are from landed gentry anglo-irish aristocracy mostly on. I think when became independent in nineteen twenty two. We kind push that assignment. But that's not really irish. You talk about going to the archives of research did you actually conducts to gather all these five hundred recipes. You having this book. Some of it was looking at best. Baseball's cookbooks from the nineteenth to twentieth century and looking through tried to pick recipes that i thought represented ireland in that respect i found stuff like say pollen is a river fish that is almost forgotten and offend a wonderful pollen recipe. I think in the nineteen seven book and interest. Enough are fishmonger had just been talking about pollen and nobody easing it and it all goes to europe and his fish from nee in northern ireland. That was one thing. I think looking ass older manuscripts was wonderful thing. Because i love history as well and looking at how people wrote recipes and how they i suppose. There was a certain assumption in recipes that the person who was reading new it already so the method was very very scant and often the recipe books were household management books. That would be passed down from mother to a daughter to a granddaughter so people could be able to cook the recipes. Were very interesting. A lot of pickles. Stuff a lot of preserve stuff because there was no frigid. So a lot of salting like i suppose. There's almost like how to live because if you couldn't do these things then you in trouble. Did you come across many recipes that had been practically forgotten already. Yeah like one or two some that we probably would not eat now. One was pickled herring. Which i thought was really interesting because i did a story and friend of mine because i thought didn't they meant herring and she was like no. That's terron lake orion and i was like wow because there's one heron galway and flies up and down and if anyone was to pick them i be in trouble but the interesting thing was that it reminded me of like an s quebec spanish dish where they cook fish or chicken and they covered in vinegar and wine solution and essentially that was the recipe and the recipe started off was like chopped the heads off one hundred hereon got and viscera them. That was the start of the recipe. And i was like wow. That's already a big mess. Some of the other things that are still useful. I think i put it in was quincy and quincy eric. Something that are not native to ireland but there was a lot in the seventeenth and eighteenth century that would preserve a lot of quences and so preserved. Quincy was what i would call mark cross again and again and again and also recipes would almonds. The irish were obsessed with amines. Which again is one of those interesting things to think about because again. Do not come from ireland.

How Will Stan Van Gundy Fit With the Pelicans?

"Was a few weeks ago in the ringer NBA show that at the very tail end of the show I recall you saying. Keep an eye out for Stan van Gundy and New Orleans and since we last spoke That came to fruition Stan Van Gundy was hired by David Griffin and the New Orleans Pelicans I think when this all started with the pelicans ouster of Alvin gentry. Through the. Face Tyler had a former relationship with David. Griffin, we talk about my Tony possibly because he had a former relationship via the Phoenix Suns with David Griffin but they do land on Stan van, Gundy as their next head coach when you saw that news come across the wire, would you think great I'm happy I think he could bring some accountability to the team in terms of how much they need it on the defensive end of the floor they were horrific. On defense this season in San Andy. Of course, infamously famously I'm not sure once said build an effing wall and that the Pelicans need to do and I look forward to see what he can do now that he's back in the NBA but by the way like he failed in Detroit because he was coach. Angie 'em now he's just a coach right and he was always a good coach. He was good basketball coach and it was one of those cautionary tales of. It is two different skill sets number one it also in many cases can be two different motivations right if I am if I am the general manager and the coach now let's say I make a poor signing or a poor usage of money will sometimes I may want to use that guy to prove that I was right about this guy right and I know that you Still get into that with with a front offices and coaches anyway, right in in everybody wants to be responsible everybody wants to be right about the move they made. But when you then you're not doing the scouting of every other team on a regular basis, I know you have scouts you're certainly not doing that with college, but it's just a very hard job to do twofold and. Another cautionary tale of taking that over I mean everybody wants that power but I think we've seen two of these guys. Now fact three of these guys. Now, all of which I think you would say were subpar to very below average in that role but. We respect them as guys that are on the sidelines as basketball coaches. That is their expertise in that is doc rivers who took on that role Tom Thibodeau who took on that role and Stan Van Gundy who took on that role and yet got hired as coaches though it didn't go well at their last stops. I mean doc better than the other two but we thought. Hires because these guys are good basketball coaches who were miscast trying to run everything for sure absolutely and ultimately it's another good opportunity for him when New Orleans area there even though they have Zion, they have ingram granted these a restricted free agent. He'll likely back matched any offer sheet or whatever This is still sort of A. Team right now that can go in many different directions depending on how David Griffin wants to build it out and I look forward to seeing the ways in which Van Gundy, Utilize Zion and the ways in which he tries to get him going off because remember you know before all the three point shooting, we've seen the last ten years or so that has. Exploded with the warriors and the rockets and all these teams shooting lot of threes, the magic, Dwight Howard at center and four shooters around him in the late two thousands with anti head coach and they went to a finals. We're going to be lost to Kobe and the Lakers The had some good run they some really strong teams and in with Williamson. With the New Orleans Pelicans, I know they want to add another they don't want to go like all small Wall. With Zion at the five all the time it's it's just went to work but I, think van Gundy's pasts and what he could do now with this roster, it's kind of exciting to think about the possibilities with the different ways in which they can use ion but most importantly though and again, this is like with all the coaching hires we talk about I am more interested in the personnel changes who they draft, who do they try to trade for? Who Do they try to sign I am WHO's coaching the team, but you know I'm excited to see if they're able to get. Zion, going and creative ways that they weren't able to do as much during the season despite his success he posted up a lot man I. WanNa see some more pick and roll with Zion I wanNA see some more creativity with him, handling the ball and running pick and roll, and that will largely come from other personnel changes that come to the roster that allow that to happen. But Hey, man SVG had success with some different types of teams in the past and I look forward to seeing what he can do here with him, and that team has a good roster they under performed badly. Made sometimes teams underperformed because you look at their roster and you go man aol have the goods like that team underperformed I. Think so too. I think of course it I mean look I mean Lonzo I think Lonzo hit one shot in the bubble well, even though they're young that defense was bad even though they had good individual defenders, they've jrue holiday one of the best perimeter guard defenders, Ingraham and Lonzo. They were good defenders of the Lakers. They were the last two years. They were good. They were not good defenders last season with New Orleans. And Zion I, mean he was horrific. He was so bad on defense. It was it was really sad to watch. This is the guy who is blocking three point shots closing out from the opposite side of the paint at Duke just a year prior, which is why people wonder how much of it was fatigue coming back but season how much of it was the injury limiting him how much of it was effort I? Don't know I don't know what it was but regardless. He stunk on defense, and all of this needs to change next season for this team to be anything that have any chance of actually getting into the playoffs it can't be all

New Louisville Police Chief Takes The Helm During Tense Time In The City

"See its third police chief take office since the police killing of Briana Taylor in March. Yeah, that Gentry will serve on an interim basis and will be the first black woman to lead the department. She previously served as a deputy police chief with the force before retiring in 2014. Gentry takes on the helm during a tense time in the city. There's been protests over Taylor's death for months, followed by anger over the lack of charges for her killing. And now a delay in the release of grand jury recordings, which her family and others have demanded. Chief Gentry joins me now Welcome to all things considered. Thank you for having me Well, let's start with the killing of Rianna Taylor. There's been a lot of criticism about the actions of the officers involved at night to remind listeners. Briana was asleep with her boyfriend when police arrived, and most witnesses say police did not identify themselves. Taylor's boyfriend says he shot towards the door and self defense thinking the police were intruders. Taylor was shot and killed after police opened fire. How do you characterize the police activity that led to Brianna's death? Well, that is the part that we're looking at. Now. Take over tomorrow. I've had just 1 ft briefing yesterday. So everything I know about the Briana Taylor case really is just as a citizen getting information from media. I am too anxiously awaiting to see what the G presented because what's important to me is that the proper scope of the investigation was done. People want to know from start to finish what happened in that case, and I certainly want to know that I think the public and the family deserves that as well. And the officers who are out there on the front line. How do you view your role In this moment? You've been in law enforcement for a very long time, and you've decided to step in At this pivotal point in history after being in retirement, right. I gave up a whole lot of comfort because I could see a lot of people both invited agency and out here protesting that really were uncomfortable with the way things were happening. And so I feel like I was best suited to stand in the gap. I know the agency. I know the city. I know a lot of the inequities that have taken place across the city, and so I can come in here and make sure that we create better conditions for people. So that they don't feel left out. And they don't feel angry all the time and disenfranchise because I know how that feels to be a black woman that have lived in various parts of the city over the course of my 15 year life. I'm curious that the department come to you, or did you step up? I really had more community people coming to me and some police officers, But I had a lot of leaders across the community that came to me is that you've met. I believe you're the person for this time, But the more and more that I thought about it and, you know, I'm a Christian person will believe in prayer and afraid about it, And I thought about the sacrifice of some of my co workers over the years. Other black women across the city And so I said, I know the systems and I will come in here, and I believe that even for a short time I compared us in a direction that is gonna make Louisville better place. Black Americans make up about one quarter of Louisville's population, but only about 10% of the department officers are black. What's the disconnect? I think a lot of it is pushed back again. The community. I mean, if you look at any of the videos from some of the protests and some of the way that the black offices were portrayed as traders, you know a lot of the things that happened in the media and also happen on the streets every day really make it a very, very tough sale for African American officers. One of the officers involved in the shooting. John Mattingly sent a letter to his colleagues calling some protesters thugs and saying criminals were being canonized. How widely do you think his views are our shared in the department? You know, I still wholeheartedly believe in the overwhelming majority of the police officers here. There is a lack of discipline. You know, I think we had several commanders kind of getting on. Social media and different things and putting those comments out that are very disheartening, inappropriate and they send the wrong message to the officers are on the front line, but we have to deal with that lack of discipline at the top. You have spent 20 years with the department, including several is deputy police chief. You heard from your community who said they wanted to see you in this role. For people who feel like the department hasn't done enough to reform. What is the case for putting you in charge? You know, the reforms are going to take a life of its own. But I will tell you this. I'm not a fan of taking a lot of tools off the table because the reality is it moves deadly forth up, which is supposed to be the overarching goal that we're trying to prevent. So I think the important thing is to focus on recruitment to make sure we have the right person because the right pool in the wrong hands is always going to be a bad idea. So if we get the right men and women in here, then the schools are going to be used appropriately. That's Yvette Gentry, who starts his interim police chief of Louisville, Kentucky. Tomorrow, Iraqi leaders say Secretary of State

The Mystery of Woodchester Mansion

"People have lived in the area of Gloucestershire share. Now known as would chester park since the Romans invaded Britannia but the site of the Winchester Mansion itself began as a hunting lodge in the middle of a heavily wooded deer park. The ducie family purchased the Land Law in Sixteen thirty one renovating it into a Georgian. House called Spring Park. The ducey's kept the house in a near constant state of renovation added several landscaping features to the sprawling four thousand Acre valley including a group of art official lakes in eighteen forty. The second earl of Ducie inherited the property from his recently deceased father. The Legend of what happened that fateful year would be the first indication that something wasn't quite right at the would chester estate. It's no wonder that rumors of full body apparitions, disembodied voices, and the strange smell of extinguish candles persist. Not when the initial occupancy of the mansion turned out to be so very, very strange. Henry was grateful that his father and past he would never say so loud but he could not be happier. He had long toiled in the shadows of Thomas Reynolds Morton look first earl of Ducie. While the reward of inherited title was a nice reward for his time. It wasn't enough Thomas expected a lot out of him henry heated the permanence near the Thomas War around his son the constant lack of approval had driven Henry to dark thoughts. It was unfair that someone who had so much could feel as though they were nothing. He'd contemplated killing his own father regularly. It wished for his father's death a thousand times. But wishes weren't enough. At night he trump of sneaking into his father's room and crushing his windpipe Thomas, Cole ties would stare back at him in defiance but Henry would only press harder. He would steal every ounce of paint from his father that he could. He would revel in at even. This was the retribution he deserved. But by the time, he finally summoned the courage to act on his feelings fate had intervened. His father was dead and Henry would be able to keep his soul free at sin. He should have been overjoyed, but there was a part of him. That was disappointed. Henry had wanted to watch the life leave is father's is. Instead, S. he stood in the church on that summer morning he saw the corpse of an older man that felt nothing like his father. This husk of a person wasn't even the slightest bit intimidating. He was justice Shell Serene still. No fire behind the size no disapproving sneer. To the best of his knowledge Thomas Reynolds, Morton had never looked serene is life. Death was as the saying goes the great equalizer Henry didn't WanNA. Feel equal to his father he wanted to feel better that him. His shock at being robbed of the chance to end his father's life was eventually swallowed by his own greed. He held the title and the purse strings that once belonged to Thomas. The legacy had been passed onto him and he could do whatever he wanted with that power. His first act of filial disobedience was going to be a party. He would holden enchanted forest themed masquerade at his father's last real estate acquisition but converted Hunting Lodge in Winchester Park. It was still under construction, but the ballroom was mostly finished and the incomplete designed would really add to the atmosphere. Henry woke with a sense of clear purpose on the day of the party even though he held the title for weeks, this would be his entrance into high society as an earl. The people would give him the respect they never gave his father. A. Played softly as Henry mingled with his guests, he welcomed as many people as he could bobbing out of conversations whenever he grew tired of the subject matter. Most of these guests were more his father's friends than his. He despised them, but he couldn't resist the chance to hold his new title and the imminent chaos heads. He outranked nearly all of them now. Though the event was a masquerade few visit guests had been particularly inventive. There was fun and trying to guess who everyone was. Something always gave them away the gate, the bone structure, the laugh. There were at least four uninspiring looking deer and far too many rakish second sons had decided to come as wolves. But there was one person Henry didn't know. A strange masked man was weaving his way through the crowd. He had never introduced himself and his body language was unfamiliar. Henry tried to get closer, but he struggled to even get a clear view of the masked man. The pushed through the of gentry ignoring their complaints. Finally. When the crowd parted they met. The mysterious man was standing still gazing out one of the large glazed windows to the forest behind. And redrew closer and put one gloved hand on the man's shelter. The did not turn around.
