"So one thing I do want to bring up here, Justin before we go any further with this story, is this rumor? That has been out there in various forms now that Allen Iverson had been drinking before he took the podium on that day and that he was drunk at this press conference. And I'm just curious how you understand that theory and whether or not it holds any water. That day was so polarizing that, you know, in the years since that press conference, there have been reports that has been speculation that Iverson may have showed up to that press conference drunk. He is vehemently denied that he had any sort of alcohol in his system at that moment. And he was completely lucid and sober and clear in his thoughts that day. And look, I mean, it's not that Allen Iverson was a choir boy who did not like to have a good time, right? Like that's part of the scouting report too. But if you go back and watch the video as both of us did before talking about it, Justin. He is lucid. Yeah. I mean, his eyes are laser focused. And is there some alcohol in a system God knows? But the idea that this is the rambling incoherence of a man who is under the influence, that is easily disprovable based just on the video evidence. Yeah, I mean, he wasn't stumbling over his words. He was completely clear in his thoughts. He was the conductor of that press conference, but I don't even think that's the point of this conversation. If we reduce this down to he may have been drunk, then again, you're still stripping away his humanity, which has been the biggest crime of this entire discussion for the last two decades. So two decades ago, Justin, what was the reaction to all of this from the media and the league itself at the time? that people need to understand about a, yes, we can see them now and we see the love that he gets. But that press conference in 2002 changed a lot with the lead. So when you look at the wardrobe change in 2005. Yeah, the dress code, the policy created by then commissioner David stern in 2005 that required players to wear business casual attire to games and banned stuff like shorts and flashy jewelry. It wasn't necessarily said it was the island Irish enroll, but it was de facto. The Allen Iverson rule. Around the mid 2000s, the league is beginning to make it very known that they're pivoting away from Allen Iverson, the way he carries himself because he's very influential to the young players in the league at the top that the young players in the league at the time are the Dwyane Wade, Carmelo's the LeBron, so on and so forth. And the league in a sense, they're saying like, we can't have more of him in the league. We have to limit Allen Iverson to just Allen Iverson. And so how would you describe how Allen Iverson's career proceeded from May 7th, 2002? He stayed in Philadelphia for a few more years. He had a few, at least in terms of individually. He had some great years there. And in 2006, 2007, he was traded to Denver where he teamed up with a very young Carmelo Anthony. He was still a very electric and exciting player. They made for one of the great scoring duos, at least in recent NBA history, but after Denver, that's when it really started

"So I think it's kind of appropriate that we are bringing you this episode today. Because, and by the way, hi, it's Pablo. Because we're not working right now. We're not practicing. We're not working on our craft. We're instead bringing you an episode about what I consider just one of the most memorable iconic. American pop cultural moments that I can recall. And it turned out that Justin tinsley was the perfect person to help us pull back the curtain on what exactly Allen Iverson was talking about. And why so many of us, this is the real story there. For so long. It is Thursday, August 25th, and yeah. This is ESPN daily. Justin tinsley is the 20th anniversary of what a lot of people call a rant but feels more to me straight up like just one of the great oratories. One of the great soliloquies in sports history. Yeah, I call it a stream of consciousness. We sit in here, I suppose to be the franchise player and we in here talking about practice. I mean, listen, we talking about practice. Not a game, not a game, not a game. We talking about practice. And Justin, I'm not sure there's a more famous bit of sound anywhere else in modern sports history. I'm not sure there's a piece of sports culture that's more imitated, more celebrated, more derided than what Allen Iverson told the world on May 7th, 2002. Allen Iverson is one of the more analyzed critiques and documented athletes. At least of the last 30 years. And when you ask a lot of people, let's just say a casual basketball fan, a casual surveyor of pop culture. When you say Allen Iverson, more often than not, people will be like practice? Yes. We talking about practice. Not a game. Not the game that I go out there and die for. And play every game like it's my last. Not the game. We talking about

"We love to talk about talking about practice because of course we do. Right? I mean, I can't blame you if you've quoted Allen Iverson after your wedding rehearsal or you're driving test or an actual practice. It is incredible sound. But as it turns out, that full half hour press conference, which is just Iverson on stage, no holds barred, is actually even better. A lot better. So today, two decades later, Justin tinsley tells us what we don't know about an iconic moment from one of the most influential athletes ever. And it changes everything. I'm Pablo Torre. It's Friday May 6th. This is ESPN daily. Support for this podcast and the following message comes from supercuts. Because let's face it, life is busy between work and family and more work. So Justin before we dive into Allen Iverson in 2002 and what led up to the sound bite that has been echoing in our heads for 20 years now. I do feel like we need to understand Iverson the man himself. So where do we start the Allen Iverson story? You have to go back to February 1993. This is Allen Iverson's junior year in high school. He is the number one football player in the state. He's the number one basketball player in Virginia. Which is insane, by the way, for that to be the kiss. And he wins state titles in both. So he is the biggest thing going. And he has a litany of colleges, Courtney services, and both sports. So in February 1993, Allen Iverson and a group of friends are at a bowling alley in Hampton, Virginia. He gets into a fight with several young white men and women is wildly assumed to be racially motivated. About 40 people were involved. Black and white, but only Iverson and his friends were arrested, charged and convicted. Now, this is where things start to get sticky. It's Allen Iverson in his friends, all of whom are black. They're the ones charged with igniting the brawl. They're the ones put on trial. Allen Iverson is sentenced to prison. Allen Iverson has been called one of the country's best high school athletes. But now instead of graduating from bethel, he'll spend at least the next ten months in jail. With good behavior, that's the usual amount of prison time for his sentence. 15 years, ten of those suspended. So the number one athlete in the state doesn't even have a senior year in high school. He's sitting in prison and 18 year old Alan Iverson is probably thinking my life's over. They had it not been for two of the most powerful black men of their time. The outlet obviously storm, it may not even be a story to begin with. I'm talking about L Douglas wilder, who was the first black governor in America since reconstruction. He was the governor of Virginia at that point in time and one of his last acts was granting clemency to Allen iris. He's got him out of prison. And iris in the Allen Iverson's mother is calling coaches around the country basically begging them you have to save my son. You have to save my son. The only one who listened was John Thompson. During his senior year of high school, Iverson spent four months in jail as a result of his involvement in a bowling alley brawl. Now he's here, Georgetown, where John Thompson teaches basketball and discipline. When you look at it at first you think it's kind of strict, but then again, it's just because they care about you and they trying to look out for you and prepare you for other things in life besides just basketball. Allen Iverson goes to Georgetown is one of the most electrifying players in the country and especially the biggies. And he goes on to be the number one pick in the draft. With the first pick in the 1996 NBA draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Allen Iverson from Georgetown university. But here's the thing about Irish. He came to the NBA with that image. A lot of people saw him as, oh, if this is the future of the league, then I don't want any parts of it. This guy is a thug, this guy is a criminal. He runs with the bad crowd. He seemingly getting a new tattoo every other week. It feels like, you can't shortchange how people looked at this guy from the moment he stepped into the league. Yeah, pretty immediately, Justin Allen Iverson gets established as this character who was not just subversive, but also dangerous at barely 6 feet tall and by May 2002 in specific. How would you say things were going for Allen Iverson's Philadelphia 76ers? From a basketball perspective, the season was a disappointment. The season before they won 56 games. And in the O one O two campaign, they went 43 games. It was a 13 game drop off. They got knocked out in the first round by the Boston Celtics. So all eyes were on Allen Iverson. I mean, he was losing to the Celtics, Justin, and at the same time, and this part had been going on for years by this point. Allen Iverson was also feuding very publicly with the head coach of the sixers, Larry Brown, and Larry Brown had tried to trade Iverson, right? In 2000 and there were still all of these constant trade rumors. In part because Larry Brown was complaining to the media about Iverson's practice habits right after they lost to Boston in 2002. A key player got to be there. It's got to be practicing. He's got to set the example, and he knows that. To be fair, this isn't the first time that Iverson and his practice habits came up. This has been discussed in seasons fryer. I remember Larry Brown, you were speaking to the media in the summer of 2000 as he was coaching Team USA and they asked him about Allen Iverson and a lot of people wondered why Iverson wasn't on that 2000 Olympic squad. Larry Brown talks about how he needed average into participating practice fully because that would set the tone for the rest of his teammates. I'm tired of everybody talking about my relationship with Allen Iverson. I wonder what your relationship would be with any employee that you might have who doesn't choose to come to work on time or doesn't choose to come to work at all, but doesn't choose to do the things everybody else in your organization does. And.

"The kingside. But it's not lamb homosexual. It's not same thing there another not together now. Sometimes they bleed together right they might be might be sexually de next one. Here's what I get a lot of these. I know the answers to get your input here. And plus it's it's I mean I've had these conversations Gotcha. Gay People can stop being gay time. They want America America and let me say Walmart. Stop being gay in Walmart. You're fine you stop at the stop being idea behind that man me uncomfortable if I was like like it was and it sounds bad. Like in retrospect who I am today but if I could have taken are stopped being gay when I was a fucking awkward twelve year old. And been like Oh. I'm just not going to do that anymore. You know I mean who wouldn't it doesn't make it. You know what I mean if you could. Have you decide not to be the fat kid anymore? If you decide not to be the Jewish kid or whatever. The case is a million scenarios. You were take the easy route but because you there wasn't an option you take the hard road and become a stronger person for it But yeah I mean. In retrospect I would say yeah fuck be straight if that was an option. I mean but now as I'm very proud of ym but it didn't come easily. So I mean if it was an option to take that easy road. Yeah you earned your stripes. Yes with multi stripes. Well some of them are Brown stripes. Summer skids not strike. Let's bleed together. We've got a flag of skids.

"Whatever any of that shit they. They are really clinging to the gay community because gay people have a very disposable income. Because we don't have kids. Yeah we can fucking. We got money to cruise do shit and go across. There's gave you a Lotta money right. Yeah they're finding in Republicans I think are finally learned that because of the fact that with the gay marriage thing like Oh that's GonNa make a lot of money we we we can suck. Dick and make money off. Let's go so do you think like The commercialization the parades it's kind of it's kind of made the whole homosexuality thing lose a little bit of its Magic Kebbi Barclays in a sense. And you know and it's almost I don't know but I I have to kind of take it as it as it is is a good thing. I mean it helps it more than it hurts right. Right does my small annoyances but for the most part I in this day and age two thousand thirteen I can literally and I do go around all over the state and do my fucking Queer Act in literally talk about some not so like just really intense gaze shit and some really small towns and I've never been strung up by a tree so let's plus it's accepted. I've never had cigarettes per. There's nothing I've never had any of these bad experience. Night is young. Yeah there's never been a better time to be gay right. There hasn't no and there never will be. I mean it's always just going to get better. Hopefully we hope for the Holocaust right around the corner. Russia Russia. Have it's way right. Exactly you'll get fucking weird One of the question before we go to the first break Is there is there? A militant faction of HOMOSEXUALS DESERT LIKE. There's there's like gay there's black militants and there's other things deserve ones. That are a little more aggressively. You mean like a gay elitist or gay terrorists may be you know. I don't know it's hard to there is like there is a gay a really small part of the gay community that is very not welcoming to the rest of the world like they they take. That identity is very much. There's and they don't want anybody having it hang out with. Not that they don't or they just they don't they. DoN'T TRUST STRAIGHT PEOPLE. Gay separatists right like yeah they just they wanna live in their community and they want nothing to do with the rest of the world and straight people come to the gay bars. They don't I am up. And you know Welfare to the gay people say that like the gay nineties which is a huge gay club. Minneapolis and probably one of the bigger ones A lot of the gays don't like it anymore because it's become some become ever analysts rates. Just WanNa hang out in that I do in my in my comedy said I'd do a joke about it. Basically in the in the idea that straight people go there to like kind of view. Gay People in real life and like like gave workers leg right watching it and like wow. You know like they'd just kind of watch it but it's only unfortunately the only thing they were really watching the drugs the sex the trannies and the fuck in drag Queens. It's not it's not a real version of what the gay lifestyle is. Because you're only seeing a book and a bunch of drunk dudes in a bar trying to hook up right if I was to go to a local pub and want to see what straight people were like and you know I go to a local bar and like oh you guys. This is what straight people are like. You know. You're not going to get an accurate right Sunday. You know. What would you say? Is the most accurate venue in the twin cities. Like if you really want to get the most traditional the experience yeah or Let's see for a bar. I would say the Eagle. Yeah except don't go downstairs gets crazy. That's where the leather happens. So that Martin that part If I mean if you feel crazy you WANNA get crazy go down. They will go straight people still watch. I've never seen this person. Go down there but my buddies used to cook at the Eagle and he really years. They have good food long hair. He's looks like Terrib-. I Dunno fizzy gay or is he just worked there? You see straight. He was like tall duties drummer in a band. Anyways I've heard anecdotes of a straight couple in there one time and just got like their ass kicked like a guy and a girl that okay see. I wanted urban myth. I WanNa hear I heard my other buddy was in there and he overheard a guy saying I just got done raping a cop for everything that place the reason I say I guess I worry a better maybe a better example than the Eagle would be the nineteen. The nineteen is the oldest and I gave are in MINNEAP. Is that the one off Nicholas. Una almost on the edge of South Minneapolis. Yes called the nineteen bar camera or the St Zomba. Yeah it's like it's really just a really small town bar Americans to do a Lotta shows at the barbecue place on Nikolett. We do show to get The Scott Hanson. Yeah but remember the barbecue place. The pit barbecue pit area is right around. The corner is a drink there in between the shows and stuff just because bar and then camp and Saint Paul's really good one Only want to say away from if you don't want that is say away from the the clubs like nineties and saloon because those are meat markets guys are going there to hook up. That's strictly what they're doing right. And they're partying and they're doing drugs and that's if if that if you are want going to be a part of the gay community for a minute that's just like not the best version of it. In my opinion okay. The nineteen bars on West Fifteenth Street and Lasalle. That's that's a really classic bars totally. Just chill play Pool Darts. Hang on the back on the patio as just really okay. The only thing the reason you would know it was a gay bars because the jukebox plan fucking Geisha. It's raining men anti for seven and a good tunes on to Europe into the nineties. So the bubble foam party. Yeah meet me. I know all right. We're back here. We got Our Professional Gay Man Mad Iverson..
