"Oh yeah of course. Chris paul i think you and goes much further ahead of him. They here's the thing that we've had seventy five years of the league that we've had greek is chris. Paul george gervin sam jones. James started while frazier jason kidd like it's to be in the top fifty now versus what it meant in nineteen ninety-seven. You're talking about twenty more awesome players like it's a battle now to get in that top fifty. You're right but if you ask me hardened or iverson who you got and even if my criteria is judged players on if i need to win a playoff game which one of these guys would i rather have and the answer. That is probably harden. But i'm still taking our persson. I'd rather have on my team. That's the conundrum of hardin. Right i'm not even sure. I'd rather have team scratch it. I just want iverson. I wanna see. I want him i want him. I want him in the league. And i'm sure i want him or need him on my team. I don't need him rep in my team. I just want alan iverson in the league to exist to watch to enjoy if it's a game. Seven james harden has had a better career is at more. mvp finishes the whole thing moral. Nba's he's been more durable more consistent. Everything i'd rather have gained seven. I'd rather have said well. That's why we did is j. daddy was awesome to see you in Into talk iverson. That flew by. We did that for like ninety minutes. I could probably do another i actually. I probably do about nine more minutes. I don't have. It was so much fun bill. "Was a huge moment for him but he got to feel the love that everyone had from that room in their everyone. They were pulling fallon iverson. And it's just for me. This is one of the top five moments in my career. I think he was in a days. We says i love you man hours and told me love me like i'm good. I don't need any awards i myself. I don't need any of that. I was told me love me. I was there for his first game. Georgetown i was there when he went into the hall of fame. I was there for the step over. you know. I was there for his peak for some of his lows. All of it. And that's one of the highlights of my career was. I got to be up. Closed in basically see the whole progression about arison from his first collegiate movement. I forgot to do this for would sage the worst. Are we sure the answer was the best thing for him. 'cause i say it's not you know at at least it wasn't nickname unlike ai which kind of became his nickname. We've got him really like either. No but the s the s was one of the last nickname nicknames and not just katie or all these initial nicknames now which aren't even nicknames but the thing is he had the nickname we should call him bubba check or bubba have a bubble that was too intimate for him. 'cause backstory why would he be you know to alcohols in and you know he had uncle bubba and uncle uncle chuck and they combined it and as they call them bubba chug The answer could have worked. The answer's pretty headline friendly. You can never answer the answer. Sixers find the answer is bannon day. I i was just called him iverson to me. He was like you know he's like madonna. Iverson almost didn't have a first name for me juicy iverson last night. Never call them anything other than everson. I always think of the late. Brian burrow and we would just say iverson that was like are being iverson Last two categories overrated underrated. Properly rated. I think he's twenty percent overrated and eighty percent underrated. That's where i've landed if at gunpoint. I'm going on especially the further. We get away from him. He's going to be more underrated because the stats says you. You mentioned aren't going to be kind to him so we're not gonna you know he's not gonna stack up with other guys. You know value over replacement player or whatever you wanna call it purrs. So he's he's. He's going to become increasingly underrated. The lack of playoff success hurts him and eat. There's reasons for that was he's supposed to have well. That's so that's my question like could should he beat in the oath. Celtics should have one. It's hard to win playoff games. I would say it's hard to win a playoff series or a game when your best player is my height. I'm right around melanomas height. It's hard to win in the nba. If your best player is my height. And so i think he won more than suga chris paul crazy but like you look at some of the series that he lost they were really good teams right. They lose to the oh. Seven spurs team was great win when he was on denver on a pretty good denver team they lose in. Oh five to that pistons team that they were never going to be. They wouldn't beat them. The two thousand one sixers. So i do think he never found the right team may but at the same time you look at that paul pierce draft than it'd just been the two of them could have been different. My final pyramid ranking for him has dropped a little since my book on. Some of the modern guys have passed myself. Top tip damn at forty seven. Who seems low. You can make a case for all the forty sixty above him. But just when i hear that number forty seven put this way. There's not forty six people that come to mind when i think of the last thirty years of the nba before on arison no way but you got a twelve year career or or even you know the sixty plus whatever years of the nba seventy eighty whatever two now Wide marriage like eighty. So i'm i'm i'm just look the ranking as the ranking i'm i'm i remove all bias everything from it and you think like in the last ten years. 'cause they come any guys past him right durant. Why lebron wade. I mean this is iverson in a nut show. He far surpasses the numbers. And i'm sure you have a perfectly legit case for rankin forty-six people ahead of him. I'm just saying there will never be forty six people that i think of head of alan iverson never agreed. Yeah i i actually think you're right but just talking about best ever polarized jackson. It's michael vick. It's these guys that will never do justice if you just look at the numbers and the entries in their in their basketball reference page if you saw alan iverson especially if you've got to see the raw version. Young nevada that i got to see for two years at georgetown is unforgettable. Give you the guys. I have read ahead him. Russell westbrook he does more things. Yes george bacon. I guess. I guess i guess you have to. If you this bill. Kevin mchale patrick ewing. Oh yeah of course. Chris paul i think you and goes much further ahead of him. They here's the thing that we've had seventy five years of the league that.

"So i would say it's about twenty two cents on the dollar miller. You know whatever i think. Depending on what year you were either happy to have them or miserable. Not to be all star. Yeah so that was that trade and then And then famously. The the billips iverson trade was one of the better trades of that decade. Where for the nuggets yet. Denver gets billups and makes his spirited. Run at at the lakers and then detroit gets iverson basically as An expiring contract. I remember being really disappointed with barclay talking about the trade and what iverson was gonna do on detroit. And i'd like this. And i'm thinking like iverson's done where anyone with league passes been watching. It's over but you wanted to believe right every time. Right all the way through memphis right. You wanted to hope he has something left and it just wasn't there well and then we have. There's philly stop which. I had forgotten about egos memphis and then philip's marries. Twelve games does all right. We're almost ambigous would have sliding door moment. That wasn't the four-team trade nine thousand nine hundred draft. They draft larry hughes in the next two picks her dirk nowitzki. Paul peirce so new whiskies weird. And i think it probably doesn't work but i think paul pierce would have been decent perfect perfect sidekick for him perfect. Yeah some about it. They just would have worked. But yeah i think they would have liked each other. I think pierce totally would have figured out. How to be the robin to batman and the whole thing so anyway Post retirement was he bark lead or honda owed meaning has a stature risen or have. We stopped talking about him completely. I would argue. He's been bark late. I think we talk about on iverson a lot. Yes and in part. Because when he talks about the younger players he has nothing. But love for the young guys steph curry everyone. He goes to bat for them and younger. People love that because they're so used to hearing the legends just rain down and yeah the younger guys so they loved it. Iverson loves everyone comes after him and then you saw it at. I was there. He gets inducted in the hall of fame. It was a nice for me. It was like you know the full circle moment. I don thompson chastised me for saying arrison was gonna. I had him in the hall of fame after one. Preseason game in here he is actually going in along with shakeel. O neil It's a nice class and and the love in that room for iverson and what was amazing. Was he was shook. I talked to him right after he got off the stage and he was just in a daze. He was scared up there. He said his legs were shaking. It was a huge moment for him but he got to feel the love that everyone had from that room in their everyone. They were pulling fallon iverson. "Hill eric snow. Can you name the six sixer. Who played twenty seven minutes. Alan iverson become matombo. Aaron mckie tyrone hill air as was jemaine jones. Wow he played thirty minutes in a game. Seven really really not stack back then. Even looking at toronto they had carter internal davis oakley avenue. Williams peterson than the bench. Was child's curry and jerome williams and that was considered to be like a deep team. It just the talent was just kinda not. They're not like. I said when i got an up close look at them in the finals and i saw that team to the finals. He was the mvp. Well here's another. What's asia where speaking of that year We always talk about. Oh two lakers kinks. How that was the fishies te playoff series. We had from that weird era from like ninety nine two three where every year there was a really fishy series Ever forget about philly and milwaukee in two thousand one philly shoots one hundred. Eighty six free throws compared to one hundred twenty free throws from walkie twelve to three in technical fouls for wacky five zero and flagrant s-. We saw two games swing on a controversial lane violation and then to know calls. Glen robinson doesn't attempt to free throw game five during the series carl ray allen or find a combined eighty five thousand dollars search for claiming to the reporters that the series is rigged and milwaukee losers in seven. And it's it's pretty bad and if you've if you've ever been a bucks fan who is there during then bring that series and just watch him go for five minutes they go fucking crazy. The league wanted iverson the finals. Now he delivered but it say it has an age great. Funny i don't remember much of that series. I was off covering the lakers. And then i will. They did finish early so i was able to catch the last couple of games. I remember i went out to watch to do something during game seven. I recorded it on my vcr asc. And and ray allen has a shot to send it in overtime to win it at the end of the game right and yeah yeah and the shots and my vcr cut off the shots in the air and my vcr ran out of tape right. At that moment. I had to turn on. Espn is is another thing. That sounds almost as outdated espn news and turn on espn news. Said to get the score and see who won the gal man. Remember that when you look up stuff on your phone. Yeah i was like. Oh my god what happened and i had to turn on. Espn news and see who won that series. Next category is too early to late. Just did he show up too. Early did show up too late or did you show just right just for what his career was. I think he's like the ultimate just right guy. I loved when he showed up in the league. I i love that. Connection of what else was going on. And in just in america at the time and what he meant as things evolved over the next twelve years and I don't know. I think it's the perfect time his style till he wasn't a great three point shooter. I don't think he ever would have been yeah. He was physical guard. Who got to the line and just made sense in the air that he played right. There's no way he gets drafted number one in this era right now but i guess the the counter would be would he be shooting like ten thousand. Three's a day in this era and would would you be modeling game after they james harden and we are just like free throws and threes. That's it but the thing is. I don't wanna watch version of iverson. I love that angles. I love his little eight-footers in his floaters and he had crashed into people. Like i. i would wanna lose that and the thing is. He loves to be in the gym but he didn't love to be in the gym. Getting up a thousand threes. He love playing right. It's so a lot of people we talk about off the plate in this era. They just want you more like isaiah thomas. I think we all can agree. If you played. Now he'd be a better three point he'd take more and he'd make more. Yeah i'm always said about on iverson. Yeah perfect i think. He's just right next categories nerd corner. We mentioned the minutes per game so career regular season minutes per game leaders will chamberlain forty five point. Eight bill russell. Forty two point three oscar robertson. Forty two point. Two allison forty one point one four. It's all time but it's brigade is five foot in the next two guys are eligible or jerry west. So it's basically post one thousand nine hundred seventy he's this complete outlier for minutes or like. Well what was the playoffs. different here. The playoff minutes per game will chamber and forty seven point two number one bill russell. Forty five point four. Alan iverson forty five point. One business insane. He didn't come out games. He he was a point guard going to the line nine to ten nine to ten eleven times. A game Doing everything and didn't come out. No wonder his career ended so fast but as an just boxers the only other kind of modern guy in the top thirteen for playoff minutes is Lebron forty one point six. So he's he's a tank right. Next category is was he a one of one. I'm going to say unquestionably in fact. That's my word was going to be absolutely. Yeah i seeing him in person. It was kind of the for the first time you're like. What is this what's happening. This guy's so fast. I it was the speed that was in person separated him and there's only been a couple of guys accurate. Remember like that. we're like oh my god. That guy's fast and westbrook is similar and he plays with a similar energy. But westbrook is more physically overpowering yet. And i listen is just this wisp that you can't catch up to. Yeah unintentional comedy wrinkle. Here we go practice practice this This happened you know when this happened during the two thousand one playoffs. Oh so the season ends for them. Right two thousand one or two no. There's no two two thousand two thousand two thousand. I the reason i remember is. Because i'm with the lakers and are playing sacramento. So actually. that's the conference semifinals. So the middle of the second round the playoffs plan sacramento. And i will never forget shack reacting to the practice rant and thinking. It was the most hilarious thing ever. He couldn't get over it so he goes in the first round right. Yeah they lose to boston in best five in a game. Five a game. I went to grad. Ceos there.

"All right next category is what stage the best. I mean we. We talked about it already but we gotta talk about his style and especially in the late nineties that met and and what it led to and how the league reacted like when i think of the dress code i just my mind goes to iverson. Even though he wasn't missing games was like us on the sidelines. But it all the way the league was reacting. And how fearful. The league was of like wait a second. Our fans are getting turned off. What do we do. I feel like iverson was the epicenter of that. And now you look back and it seems so silly because now. They've embraced all that stuff but in nineties they were not well. The iconic moment is he goes to get the rookie of the rear rookie of the year award with the wave cap on right. And it's like he didn't carry just showed up picked up his award wave cap on and he's he's good and that was just a defining moment for alan iverson. So that's something that as the best because be who you wanna be right. Be who you are that ethos that we see so much. Why not russell. Westbrook and again. That's another way in which westbrook is a descendant of him walk into the gym with swagger and he was swagger before we use that term. Do you feel like where would you rank him on. Influential nineties. People in the culture against advocacy. You're competing against sami jordan. I mean jordan is reigning supreme but iverson is ushering in a new era simultaneously. And it's funny because iverson doesn't even really come into play in the last documentary but that's happening simultaneously with all that Including so his rookie year is the year. Jordan's return right now. That's jordan second year the famous crossover. So you do have this. Interaction of jordan in iverson and irishman crosses them up and that's the announcement not just that iverson is here. There's a whole new generation. That's here in watch michaels. Michael still has two more championships in them. But he's literally stumbling off to the side and that's a sign that okay. There's a new group that's getting ready to take over and within three years within four years it's him and kobe and shaq in the nba finals. Well it's funny. Because when they were doing all the next. Mj stuff especially after he retired. And it was os grant hill Koby vince carter. Nobody was ever like iverson. That's the guy because it seemed improbable that iverson was going to be the next. Mj and yet when you go back and you think other than kobe like he was definitely became more academic. I think than anybody else that bill. I would say that iverson you see more iverson league now than jordan stylistically. Now jordan changed everything longer. Shorts shorter socks bald head. Wristband up by your elbow. All that comes from jordan right but so much of what you see now tattoos braids everything else. That's iverson and you see more of iverson in the league. Now then you see of jordan. Nancy good point. I think the last ten years have been great for everson. I have that in a wet stage the best. Just the two thousand. Ten's we're awesome for him. We leave the thousand tendencies like this outside icon compared to when he left bill so what age the best iverson. What as the worst like physically worse right at could point I had this in my notes about when he got. He's about to get traded os six to denver and they said that show nba coast to coast. Which i know you went on a bunch of apps and so am i notes. Greg anthony tim legler and barry and they just started trading iverson stories and i said i wrote that it it felt like they were talking about a mayan warrior. Where they're just for twenty minutes. Just i remember this one time. And i just remember sitting at home watching like man who else would other than jordan. Who else would be discussed like this or these. Three guys who played with emmer just reverentially with them he he. He just carried that. I would love to hear more cover stories. I become a very important voice in basketball. Actually he gone line. He's got a great talk about what happened that night. In the milwaukee bucks locker room the night. They sat out the game but korver i would love to hear his toys. I'd love to hear stackhouse in iverson and what that class was like. Now that we have some distance right. The here's back who's very thoughtful person but also not somebody you wanna mess with and i would love to hear from him larry brown so that there's one larry brown story we might have to cut this. But i'll i'll tell that he used to say You know every time. I took iverson out of the game. He would mother fuck me so if you think about it. Eighty two games. I'm taking him out twice a game. One hundred sixty four motherfuckers this season. Wow and that's probably why he did take about that much as forty three minutes a game i had this as a what sage the best and the worst so he has this at the time. Iconic two thousand one playoff. Vince and it for the first time really feels like we have now entered this new post. Mj an nba right. Were you have kobe and shaq on on the west as the new super team. You have all these stars coming up in the east. You of iverson had vince. Iverson is fifty four in game. Two vince says fifty in game. Three iverson is fifty two in game. Five this was like they weren't scoring in the one thirties like they do now. This is the equivalent of bike if three if there were three sixty point games and then you have the controversial. Vince goes back to you on. Cd graduate game seven. Just all of it was great and it leads to the next series where toe to toe battle against walkie which will get to And we felt like this is the beginning of something which is why it's also what's age the worst because weirdly that was like the highlight of vincent's career and that six weeks was the highlight of iverson's career and it didn't really lead to anything. It was what it does so in a weird way at age. The best and the worst. Because i don't think the impact was what we thought. It was the two thousand one. Well i think we had to realize that it wasn't sustainable. Yes right so similar to mike vick. Another south virginia guy who was exciting in the people are say play football said he was very reminiscent of michael vick. The way he played. And you just couldn't catch him. He super fast and imagine that iverson use on the basketball court on a football field but neither one of their styles was built to last and so he was destined to age the worst in that regard. Vince was six eighteen in that game. Put off for eight minutes. Iverson put off. Forty minutes was eight for twenty seven twenty one and sixteen I'm gonna just give you the top six. Who played more than only six sixers played more than thirty than twenty seven minutes in this game. Sea biscuit six..

"He's coming up he's coming into the league and this is attached to him. It's this thought of criminality without any consideration injustice. Next thing you need to know. I said how many stars do you think. He played with philly. Who made the all star team when he was there while he was there who can be get defensive player of the year to cambay and theo ratliff. That was that was it so he played with role players over all overpaid. Eric snow aaron. Mckie kyle korver who ended up having a good career but they overpaid him. Kenny thomas mccord. Who does a pretty good. Alan iverson a prison heard of do is they are. Prisoners is pretty good mark jackson. Brian skinner greg buckner tyrone hill. George lynch corliss williamson. I think all those guys ended up getting overpaid at some point. Yes oh played with Derrick coleman keith. Van horn seemed al-bared. Joe smith for high predatory disappointments are expensive. He played with Some overpaid washed up guys. Todd mccullough tony coup coach the got him like two years too late seaweed. Data got three years Glen robinson two years too late matt. Geiger billy owens and then three lottery pigs. All whom are frustrating. So jerry stackhouse tim. Thomas larry hughes and there was a lot of stackhouse iverson member. Their their entourage has had a brawl. They actually had to trade stackhouse because there was so much bad blood. And for what we know about jerry stackhouse one of the all-time don't fuck with me guys. Yeah so the fact that him at we're on the same team alpha king along we might have actually gotten off pretty well without a doubt. That was another one Third thing you need to know you alluded to it earlier. You could fill. I gotta anybody. The league's had you could fill an entire chapter with like seventeen iverson stories. That one of us heard about I heard i heard he was out drinking for seventy two straight hours. I heard he lost a million dollars at a casino and you never knew what was true. I heard a piano. A plant got kicked out of a casino. You never knew what was true and not true and it would go through this filter of. I heard this guy who worked for the lakers told me the replacement car which i'll just leave it at that. You know that story you yet. I know that there is an urban legend factor to him. Almost like a like a house on your street where you're like. I heard something weird happened. That would happen. Oh i heard my aunts and that was just what it was like to cover the league without everson in it. You'd never knew what was true. And even georgetown so at georgetown. John thompson new alcyone lock spies everywhere right and yet. Iverson somehow managed to slip under his radar. And i knew somebody that was doing some recording stuff. He'd be in the studio with iverson and he was telling me about where iverson was going. He was up to and i check them with john thompson and john had no idea and to slip into a lou john thompson. You have to be deep. Deep deep under a by all accounts of vampire like say jordan. Didn't say it seems like the two guys who just never slept where iverson and jordan laid. Right right yeah. during you couldn't tell you can see so well it all it all flips on them because two thousand nine two thousand ten where he's not. That old plays eighty five games on four teams. All the sudden. it's over he's washed up. You're what happened. The guy averaged twenty six a game a year ago with that though because of his body the because of the way he played you knew it was going to go all the way bad really quickly. Well to to bring back the tyson analogy. It was like a boxer where it was just like when boxers hit that point and oh yeah it's over too many fights and with iverson punishment not enough sleep but his career. I don't want to think about deborah's allen iverson maxwell. He's career ends at thirty four a year younger than lebron. Who won the finals. Be four title. Think about that. He's a year younger than lebron. He seemed like he was like forty five and he came into the league two years later and he was even older right because the the the he was imprisoned. So yeah it's less aged or less time in the league but younger. Age the rhonda. We just got. It's a twelve year career. Basically no major injuries and it just abruptly ends like e normally you would see it. It's like the guy must have a herniated disc or tornado. Hail microfracture surgery. Now it was it was just I remember a scout though telling me or coach when he loses that step is over for him because his speed was raised. Mazing asset and. They said he doesn't have a counter when he loses. His step is going to be over. That's what happened to more things you need to know about iverson. So here's the case against him. Just i'm pro everson. i've always been pro everson. I remember really wanting the celtics to trade for him and six. When he became available they had the lottery picks. This is the case against him because he's obviously hall of famer. So this is the case. When when for the statisticians the people who are like you never wanna ring. This is what they would bring up. They say bog he averaged twenty three plus shots and seven straight seasons. They point out he was a really subpar. Three point shooter. For how many three point shooters he thirty one percent career. He three straight sub thirty percent seasons from tudo four. they'd point to his turnovers. Basically almost four turnovers.

"Could see the out like here. We go and so. All the controversies. All the stuff from alan iverson that he had in his early years that i kinda reference with that quote from him. You can see the genesis of it right there. He ran me a little of tyson. In the fact that i thought one of the fascinating things about tyson was how self aware he was about everything that was happening to him. Even when things completely spiraled out of control he was always very very very aware of how other people regarded him an with iverson. I dunno how you know. He was obviously a little aware of how people regarded him but Compared to what people thought he was versus who he was that was one of the great things about him to me because san completely different than what people thought he was. and especially. if you around him you couldn't help but like him yet. That was part of it. There's something he couldn't say a word and you're just drawn to him. His is his his demeanor. He had this earnestness to him. That you root for him and when he messed up as he frequently did. You weren't mad at him. You're just like your kids right like You know you're disappointed in him. You're not angry at him. You certainly didn't want to dismiss him John thompson was incredibly fond of him. Couldn't stay mad at him when he's coaching immature. Yeah yeah so it it. It's a very unique character aspect. You could not stay mad. At lamar. Odom has some of that. You know and just that you you. You're just drawn to him. You want him to do well sometimes even in spite of themselves when they seem incapable of getting out of their way so that they can succeed And important to station. I want to make about allen and it goes back to the college by realize it was the case member. He's there two years at georgetown. They don't get a big east championship. They had that. Collapse against ray allen and yukon reality can shot the bass in one of the all-time great big east games But they don't win the big east championship. never get to the final. Four right loses Bureau so and who's the other guy the on that umass team pizza to go to the final four God so what i realized. Was that team lou. Action might have been anyway. Look up those those early umass kerr squashed but would i realize that and it did hold up throughout his career is that he's a winner but he's not a champion and the flip side of that is just because he never won a championship doesn't mean he's not a winner right getting out of what he came out of young teenage mother single mom everything that he was around just getting through that and succeeding in spite of that environment. He's a winner but it was that extra bit that comes from being championed the way you carry yourself conduct yourself dedication that you need to have. That's what was missing. But he's still a winner. He just wasn't a champion. Well it turns out his title as he is single handedly prevents the two thousand one lakers from going undefeated in the playoffs. And at that first game that's his peak right a lot of ways you know and that's the step overti- lou and all that and it was interesting because at this point now i'm not around him. I'm i'm in la. I'm on the other side of the country. Only seeing him a couple of times a year. I got to cover that series. Obviously covering the lakers for the l. a. times so. It's cool for me. That i did get to be around him at his peak and I was impressed. So i thought shack should have been the. Mvp that year. i'm i'm around shack everyday. See his impact. You saw it in the finals at year but seeing that team in how offensively deficient. That team was alverson. Had to do all the scoring this little barely. Six foot guy dragged his team to the finals. Take a game off the lakers. I thought yeah is the mvp well. And that's the thing where it's the russell westbrook two thousand seventeen piece of it is the worst case scenario. Right where the team is built to make one guy succeed and get stats and have a certain size thing in the iverson o. One case the team just was very good and if he didn't do all the stuff they did they weren't going to succeed and he dragged them three rounds into the finals and they're playing this super team. It's the best version of those three laker teams. Because they're playing their best at the time beats them in game one. I remember i was to live in boston back then. And i remember thinking like addison might be able to beat these guys like you really talks yourself. I mean heard he did. He did but i mean he pushed him in game two game. Three is another robert ory shot yet in or otherwise they could have won that game and it could have been really interesting series and then just kind of the the bottom the inevitability took over shack this work to matombo inside and that was it and they ran going away but but that was his peak moment. That was as close see was three wins away from the nba up one. Nothing in the finals. Think about that bill. There one nothing on a laker team that had just been destroying the western conference and that was as good as it got as close as he got. But i will say the moment that sticks with me And i think a better version of alan iverson the basketball player in two thousand a head so that year. That's after second phil or gone from. La lakers missed the playoffs. And so i convinced the la times december around on a tour like he la. Here's what you're missing out on. I'm going around all these different playoffs. Cities and i do philly versus the pistons. The pistons are the defending champions. Eight-year year being the lakers and that version of iverson scoring champ anymore. But he's he's has a career high assists that year so in this game. yes thirty. Seven points fifteen assists incredible game. They win but what stood out to me. What i wrote about and this game two or three of the series right isn't.

"It could have been the internet and i had to ride for my column in the la times and You know so. I had to cut out a lot of the stuff but it's it was the first time iverson chris. Webber and kobe bryant all played in the same game because weber was with the The seventy sixers at that point right march two thousand five. And i'm on the road with the lakers. And i just talked to all three of those guys before. And after the game about their image in about the way they were perceived in about how they wanted to be perceived and so so. Here's iverson and i'll never forget i was. I was able to get him before the game. And the great fill jazz. Ner kind of came up to me gave me daft man you know. I'll never talk before the game. But again he. And i went back to day one and that that was a very special connection. I'm very honored that i have that. That association with iverson so. He says he was trying to spin it as more going up. He says the images blown out of proportion. I in twenty one years old anymore. I'm almost thirty years old. We want me to keep doing the same old when i came the league. I didn't know nothing about nothing on new survivor from where i was from getting out of the ghetto. That's somebody gives me millions and millions of dollars you give somebody. That never had nothing something. He's gonna make a lot of mistakes. I've got some that. i still make. They're just not as central mental because my lifestyle that undid everything i've done did all the run around all the wild stuff it just ain't me and he's talking about how he's got kids now he's got a handle himself but that was part of what he loved he he would always say. I'm not perfect. I make mistakes. A big part of the practice rant. Speech press conference was him saying all those things. I'm human and that's one of the things that drew people to him so much. Yeah i remember. He did stephen as i show steven ahead quite frankly. And it's really like the first podcast. Now just be he would have gone on a podcast and said all this stuff he said and he was he was just so compelling but he has this one point. Zero seven range. stephen a. Asked him about lebron in iverson. Says would you reach out to the lebron. James carmelo anthony to the way ways to know you have reached out to them. I know i know what are the kinds of things you say to them right now. Based on your own personal experience learn. From what i did wrong. Learn from all the stuff you see. Our lives in dom do wrong. Did rub wrong way. You don't wanna go through. What i go through right now. Far as being the bad guy and nba. All all this stuff be fake. Dan basically that's all. I'm telling you just be fake fake and i'm not gonna do it. I'd rather not being mba. I'm not living life. I tell them to do that if i'm telling them to do whatever it takes them to accept. I always let lebron know off the top dog. They love you right now. They love you right now but please believe me the first incident first time some happened. They are waiting they waiting. they're waiting. They wink man. And i. I remember watching that they can like this guy completely understood every single point of his life and how it was received and whether he cared. Or not yeah. I'm sure you're right. Everybody cares deep down but he wasn't going to change who he was for anybody he was he was that was it neither accepted. Or you didn't and you got to see eiriksson at his best. And that was even at his best apex mound. I know we're not watchable here. I think that's apex stephen. A even though you know he's more powerful now richer all that but he had alan iverson come on his show and break down in tears on his very first show. Quite frankly was even as it's on youtube by the way it's honestly one of the best hours in the history is being. It's so good it's not even our it's forty minutes. It's so compelling and it's based on the relationship that stephen had forged without arvidsson. The trust that alan iverson had in stephen a for that moment and they get to this place. Where iverson is crying talking about. Larry brown who he's had his clashes with game by game year-by-year and yet he appreciates what larry brown meant to him and what he did for the fact that he had his mvp season and he went to the finals. Plant ferrari route so quickly. 'cause i want to get to the categories but the chronology of you so you cover mma georgetown. Yes so i mean what So how does your career move alongside his as he's going so. I do two years than his rookie. I'm covering I get moved up to the bullets the last year that they were the washington bullets. It's funny we both wind up in la for a preseason. Some preseason games at these have these to do like a little mini tournament in l. a. And i heard all summer about how his boys were just acting up. They'd be at summer leagues before the vegas whatever wherever summer league was a year like his boys are acting up in the stands and the throwing bottles and just causing a mess and i come up to him before a game. I say people are saying you gotta keep your crew in check and he says may i don't give a fuck what say and i thought whoa.

"Him. Basically the whole time The seeing him in person thing is the thing that gets lost as we as the years pass and you just have youtube videos twitter and things like that. You covered him at every single point of his career. I wrote once upon a time if i could pick any modern athlete to spend a week with in his prime for magazine feature. I would pick out iverson hands down. That's the number one choice but you actually spent time with them. Is that fair dream to have. Was he that interesting. I don't know if you could survive that though. Bill question a week with iverson. I'm sure you'd want to go all the places he went to not. I don't think you could hang. I'm not saying this about you. I'm saying this about anybody journalists. I don't think you can hang with alan iverson but to the point about the excitement and first of all. Thank you for having me here. This great one. About the experience of watching allen iverson and the most time i spent around him was at georgetown just about every game. He played in georgetown. While i was at the washington post and i was on the georgetown basketball and it was an event an inexperienced every single time because once a game he would do something that you'd never seen. Before and it was captivating. The one that sticks out to me read syracuse. At the orange dome the kerry excuse me and he gets the ball and it says syracuse on the court and he went from the s to the e in at syracuse. So fast there was like he was feed reading. And i'll never forget that. There was a big monday or someplace in so many big games. Espn big monday game against yukon and gets on the back he's dribbling dribbling and then it turns into a runway and he just goes down the lane and dunks. You might have seen that one yet. Place goes nuts. they'll capital center and but every game. There was a moment and you talked about. He had his angles his signature move. Was that that twisting layup overhead layup. That was kind of his his calling. Card I would always say he was going to get crushed into the basket support on that or you know flipped upside down and he always pull it off. Every he would allude it he would allude it and it started it. There was such a legend to him and it was actually enhanced by the factory had been incarcerated because nobody had seen him. We didn't see him in mcdonald's all american game on espn for example right. So you heard about him before you get to see him and for me. It started in a couple of ways. I'm getting ready to come to washington. I'm going to cover. Georgetown and mike calls me because iverson had played in something called. The kenner league is a summer league. Georgetown like a you tap league and ireson shows up for a couple of games mcdonagh. Jim on georgetown. Campus places packed in england. Crazy form and everybody in town is talking about it and wilpon calls me up. He says man. You don't know what you're getting yourself into. This city is going crazy over. Iverson and then i was. I was covering college football. And i dropped in the.

"Running back ram into the line of scrimmage for five yards of pop and he played with a fuck. You intensity that only. Mj ever truly match. Maybe kobe kobe. Third in that rankings. For years and years the league's most intimidating player was taller than taylor swift. I was found it interesting. That iverson is first aid. All star games average twenty eight minutes of playing time and he played crunch time at every cost one because even as temporary coach diverse pissing him off so he arrived there in the nba. Too much too fast. Too soon. Era the league's first real linked to a hip hop culture that already exploded with two pac. Biggie snoop w everybody else and that led to a generational twinge to anti everson. Criticisms from fans and media members who fixated on his infamous aversion to practice. I supposed to be the franchise player and we in here talking about practice. Practice practice clashes with coaches. His occasional bogging is controversial past even cornrows and tattoos. They had a problem with that and yet those sand detractors downplayed the unforgettable thrill watching him plant person or how his peers respected and revered iverson almost immediately those detractors glossed over incompetent front office is subpar supporting cast a revolving door of coaches in philly. I i'm going to try to make you name the philly coaches he had later. You won't be able to get to there's two you won't get those detractors dot care that he was one of the most influential black athletes ever a trendsetter who resonated with the african american community in ways that even. It wasn't so great definitely took too many shots. Whatever fifty years from now. I hope people realize iverson had better balance than everyone else left with a jumper that took a superhuman pounding and kept getting up and then it goes down as one of basketball's athletic super freaks. Did.

"Take over the game at any time. It's not true. James Harden has not been able to take over when it matters most, and that's my one criticism. I think that's the only fair criticism of heart. He is not this now. Has He gotten better better in the playoffs? Do I see him trending in the right direction where he could become a? A champion. Yes, I do every year I see a little improvement from in the playoffs on the defensive end, even on the offensive yet, but but the fact of the matter is guys. He's had some of the biggest choke jobs in the history of basketball. They had okay sing. Excuse me, okay, see. They had the Golden State Warriors with a healthy K.. D. But they had home court because hardens great work during the regular. Regular season and in a game seven everyone went ice cold, and that includes James Harden had they not had the shooting night of all time? They have been champions that you would have gotten out of the West. At least not believe would have been championed. Harden came up small recently, at Golden State, chance to steal game at Golden State Close Gate. He's jumping under draymond green legs looking for the call. It doesn't hit the shot. Shot there are too many instances like that for harden, and if you look at the actual numbers in the playoffs, he goes from MVP all time regular season. Can you not tell somebody that won the MVP or killer? How can you not call somebody that led the League three years straight a killer. One thing I do know that. Zan's got coming. Both both of them don't have a championship, so you can talk about all the moments in the playoffs, but he's no discredit to the grey because I looked Allen Iverson, but both of them have a ring, so don't matter why they did a moment that happened both of them. We saw lots of NFL players over the weekend pretty fired up about the lack of safety protocols. I know the NFL and NFL. PA have met since. But overall. How would you grade the NFL's handling of the return of the season? You know I think a lot still to be decided I. think will see how these next couple of weeks I think these next couple weeks or critical I think how they handle the initial transition to getting guys back in the building. I think we've all kind of seen the same report to be interesting to see exactly how that's kind of whittled down in finalized, but if If they can handle the transition of getting nice from all across the country for the last four or five Munster in the pandemic now into the building safely and kind of ease that process in I think after a couple of weeks of just guys getting into that routine of testing and tracing and understanding distancing within the confines of a practice in the confines of meeting rooms. I think once we get going I think things will get a little easier I think. It's going to be a little tricky. Getting guys back in I think we're GONNA. have positive tests. "My is coming. From our coverage state farm dot com. Everything that I won't do right now. Is what you went through just version you know what I'm saying. A criticism, negative energy negatively. Why's why's he do this? Why does he do that? Like nobody understands and I'm cool with that. I'm not here to explain. Myself were trying to get people to understand. Why would I do or why do? Killer work my saw. A young figured out maybe when it's number. Tire her. Not Understanding it ketchups. Really interesting sound there that was James Harden sitting down opening up with the Hall of Famer Alan Iverson Perk back here with us Max. I'll start with you. What did you think of hardens comparison of himself to a? Well I. Think because he's talking to a he's. He's identified with them. And there are things to identify with a about if you're James. Harden, first of all Alan Iverson and case, the kids don't know had multiple seasons as a six foot tall. Do this just doesn't happen multiple seasons without shooting at three at least not shooting it well even. Those that. Thirty plus points where he believed the league and also league in steals to three two, and a half steals again of. Again without hitting three with much success, he was if if I was six foot, six would have been the greatest player who ever lived. He was physically at. Dominant, that's not harden, and really though harden is not the ironic thing is there is someone hardens team? Who's very good comparison with Iverson and that's Westbrook. They're similar in a lot of ways, also three well enough, and is also athletically different, and like Iverson goes goes goes, but there are lots of differences between harden and Westbrook percival, if people criticize hardened for. For anything, other than not being clutch that's messed up because he doesn't choose to not be clutch just hasn't been so far shrugged from the moment or at least hasn't succeeded in the playoffs like he does in the regular season, but he's not a selfish player Horton does whatever his team needs for him to do to be successful and he always has. He's gotten much better defensively if his team needs to score, he does it set up. And also heart, and has a good relationship or is pleased away. His coach wants to play Iverson. Larry Brown Usta us to clash, but harden dantonio harden his Dantonio news out on the floor, so in those fundamental differences like I disagree with him, and it's ironic because Westbrook's on his team. There's much better comparison there. An Stephen A. Brings up the fact that that Iverson had the right pieces around him, even though there were no other stars on the team to at least be able to drag his team to the finals and hardened hasn't exactly although. Although I would add hardens been on much better teams than I ever was, and I was able to drag that team. Maybe you could argue the worst team ever one of them to the finals, and actually be the only team that took a game from the Lakers that entire playoffs behind a is effort, so so I would say that while the comparison is apt in certain respects in other respects, really Mrs Iverson was a leader under pressure that harden has not yet been, and harden has a different more well rounded overall game than Iverson did. What would make? Up. To get to. To? His Day Max two different styles of play I agree, but both of them are killers I was a killer. Yes, we all know that but James Harden is a killer. Mac Saves. Horn is arguably he could be in. The conversation is arguably one of the greatest scores of all time makes you have to put some respect on his man name. We talking about a guy that has four fifty point triple doubles. One sixty point triple doubles is nothing that James Harden can do and I. Don't say this about a lot of people, but tapes could go out and get A. Six. How can you say that address dropping easy sixty ball or somebody? But on top of that you can move James Hood when he got when I'm looking at him at home city thunder, he was a sixth man under Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant who will lead players, and he was coming in off the bench, dropping forty pieces I was on their team won six man of the year the day he still foot into. Into Houston Texas. He has took this franchise by storm averaging over twenty five points, a game, averaging about eight, six, seven and eight assists eight seven to eight rebounds, and when they move them to the point when Dantonio became the Cote, he ever eleven sees he ever twenty eight points, eleven assists and eight rebounds, so I'm looking at the guy who's been leading the league. The last three years in scorn thirty points thirty thirty. Thirty five thirty six points, and now he's averaging thirty four points Max that is a killer, and by the way he changed the game. The revs call the gay differently because the James Hard. Be both the made great points. Here's here's the thing man like. This of this of the era I was supported and was able to see I think the problem that people have obviously when you compare yourself to AA I or any other names with idea is a fight with. Somebody says he's better MJ or he's like MJ is in that category by itself, so I think a lot of people just take offense to the whole idea that anybody would compare themselves to Alan, Iverson because we have a I, it's. It's such a high regard and not only the basketball player, but a added challenge, the status quo in the NBA so a lot of those things has a lot to do with the fact that some people may sit there and watch James Harden and talk about his comparison where I am. Be Be cringe. Worthy cause is one of those guys. We put on a pedestal because of what he did. And we say now that's untouchable and we don't. Don't see another one like that, not only timing matching up with the fact that I was a cat that was going to do him and do the things that he wanted to do, but also due to a level in which you really couldn't criticise until you found some kind of kink in this summer now with that being said offensively I think they are very compared compared comparable when you look at their ability to take over a game at. At any moment, not not from a standpoint of this what I have to do because of my team is behind to perks point because better than everybody out here because I have more of a handle on this part of the game than anybody. That's playing the game right now. I can do more creative themes on this side of the other court than anybody can do. That's been James Harden listed. There is not a conversation that that have. In the NBA right now. Offensively where James, Harden sippy of sitting, be a part of it over not having a legit on his conversation. That's just like when a I was. Put his time in in the NBA. If you're going to talk about offensive prowess in guys that can do things that was special that set them apart and hours in that conversation. Then it's not a conversation so i. get the comparison from there I. Just think it falls all differ ears when we think about who analysts everything about the status to NBA, and also was a killer and James Harden in today's NBA when that way has kind of been paid for 'em already. Look. Here's what problem with what both you just said. Mark said they could both.

"Very common in the the male gay community I specify male because lesbians are much different Lesbians move in together after a week. Usually it's common stirs nets But Gay men are very like they. Can they have a men's man's mentality Kind of in a way where it's like we can be in a committed relationship and be together but when I wanna get you know I want my separate space and I want my own whatever I want. You know that's called an open relationship Bazeley. How Open. You keep. It is up to people. Is that across the board or are there some? Hey this is my. This is who I'm with. A lot of guys that are very committed and very exclusive relationships is a code to like. Let them know like Like no this kind of I mean there is codes for other things reminds me go ahead finish. Finish your question about the only thing would be. I mean really. It'd be like anything else you'd be sitting at a bar and a guy was to approach you and be like. I'm sorry I have a partner. Okay I mean it'd be like the same idea in in in the days are are they fair respectful of that or normally may have some guy if some if someone's talking to you at a bar and they're trying to flirt and whatever And you say I have a partner. I mean they're GONNA go they're gonNA take it a little bit further than some. Maybe maybe Straight Cup people would because there is the possibility of being open. You know what I mean. So they'd be like. Oh so what's this you know? What's the status and they'd be like? Oh It's were exclusive and then then you'd go away a question about the maybe I've asked you outside of the podcast. I might've ashes before because it's been kind of a something's been bothering me for a long time. I'm going to serve the situation right until you hear what I'm GonNa tell you what I've heard in if you can set it set me straight. I had an experience where this guy who is straight to the best of my knowledge He we we whenever we would run into each other for a while he would when he shook my hand like his index finger would touch the inside of my wrist really creepy right okay and that was weird to me and then. I had heard somewhere that there. Is this gay handshake like that. You can let each other know like hey I'm a you know but not really be over. Is there such a thing? I would doubt it? It's like the underground railroad. There a laminate you can pass out that I can put my wallet for Future Reference. Like rivers when my self esteem is low and I WANNA get hit on a gay bars. They're like a gay handshake pamphlet out there. Someone Google gay handshake code coated handshake or something. Just weird thing where they touch you to palm. But that's just like a weird like let me show like miss your hand okay. This is kind of what it was. It was like that. That's old English. That's what they do to like. Scratch the no. I don't I.

"Whatever any of that shit they. They are really clinging to the gay community because gay people have a very disposable income. Because we don't have kids. Yeah we can fucking. We got money to cruise do shit and go across. There's gave you a Lotta money right. Yeah they're finding in Republicans I think are finally learned that because of the fact that with the gay marriage thing like Oh that's GonNa make a lot of money we we we can suck. Dick and make money off. Let's go so do you think like The commercialization the parades it's kind of it's kind of made the whole homosexuality thing lose a little bit of its Magic Kebbi Barclays in a sense. And you know and it's almost I don't know but I I have to kind of take it as it as it is is a good thing. I mean it helps it more than it hurts right. Right does my small annoyances but for the most part I in this day and age two thousand thirteen I can literally and I do go around all over the state and do my fucking Queer Act in literally talk about some not so like just really intense gaze shit and some really small towns and I've never been strung up by a tree so let's plus it's accepted. I've never had cigarettes per. There's nothing I've never had any of these bad experience. Night is young. Yeah there's never been a better time to be gay right. There hasn't no and there never will be. I mean it's always just going to get better. Hopefully we hope for the Holocaust right around the corner. Russia Russia. Have it's way right. Exactly you'll get fucking weird One of the question before we go to the first break Is there is there? A militant faction of HOMOSEXUALS DESERT LIKE. There's there's like gay there's black militants and there's other things deserve ones. That are a little more aggressively. You mean like a gay elitist or gay terrorists may be you know. I don't know it's hard to there is like there is a gay a really small part of the gay community that is very not welcoming to the rest of the world like they they take. That identity is very much. There's and they don't want anybody having it hang out with. Not that they don't or they just they don't they. DoN'T TRUST STRAIGHT PEOPLE. Gay separatists right like yeah they just they wanna live in their community and they want nothing to do with the rest of the world and straight people come to the gay bars. They don't I am up. And you know Welfare to the gay people say that like the gay nineties which is a huge gay club. Minneapolis and probably one of the bigger ones A lot of the gays don't like it anymore because it's become some become ever analysts rates. Just WanNa hang out in that I do in my in my comedy said I'd do a joke about it. Basically in the in the idea that straight people go there to like kind of view. Gay People in real life and like like gave workers leg right watching it and like wow. You know like they'd just kind of watch it but it's only unfortunately the only thing they were really watching the drugs the sex the trannies and the fuck in drag Queens. It's not it's not a real version of what the gay lifestyle is. Because you're only seeing a book and a bunch of drunk dudes in a bar trying to hook up right if I was to go to a local pub and want to see what straight people were like and you know I go to a local bar and like oh you guys. This is what straight people are like. You know. You're not going to get an accurate right Sunday. You know. What would you say? Is the most accurate venue in the twin cities. Like if you really want to get the most traditional the experience yeah or Let's see for a bar. I would say the Eagle. Yeah except don't go downstairs gets crazy. That's where the leather happens. So that Martin that part If I mean if you feel crazy you WANNA get crazy go down. They will go straight people still watch. I've never seen this person. Go down there but my buddies used to cook at the Eagle and he really years. They have good food long hair. He's looks like Terrib-. I Dunno fizzy gay or is he just worked there? You see straight. He was like tall duties drummer in a band. Anyways I've heard anecdotes of a straight couple in there one time and just got like their ass kicked like a guy and a girl that okay see. I wanted urban myth. I WanNa hear I heard my other buddy was in there and he overheard a guy saying I just got done raping a cop for everything that place the reason I say I guess I worry a better maybe a better example than the Eagle would be the nineteen. The nineteen is the oldest and I gave are in MINNEAP. Is that the one off Nicholas. Una almost on the edge of South Minneapolis. Yes called the nineteen bar camera or the St Zomba. Yeah it's like it's really just a really small town bar Americans to do a Lotta shows at the barbecue place on Nikolett. We do show to get The Scott Hanson. Yeah but remember the barbecue place. The pit barbecue pit area is right around. The corner is a drink there in between the shows and stuff just because bar and then camp and Saint Paul's really good one Only want to say away from if you don't want that is say away from the the clubs like nineties and saloon because those are meat markets guys are going there to hook up. That's strictly what they're doing right. And they're partying and they're doing drugs and that's if if that if you are want going to be a part of the gay community for a minute that's just like not the best version of it. In my opinion okay. The nineteen bars on West Fifteenth Street and Lasalle. That's that's a really classic bars totally. Just chill play Pool Darts. Hang on the back on the patio as just really okay. The only thing the reason you would know it was a gay bars because the jukebox plan fucking Geisha. It's raining men anti for seven and a good tunes on to Europe into the nineties. So the bubble foam party. Yeah meet me. I know all right. We're back here. We got Our Professional Gay Man Mad Iverson..

"Iverson, big boy, what's going on, man. How you doing? I'm making knows I need you to help me out here to help you start. Why that you broke down Steph curry, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James Shaquille O'Neal had it on your Instagram page, as well, you got millions of followers on give me why you picked this list break it down from the air. Your had a lot to do with from from top to bottom. At a lot to do with a lot of as you say. On earlier today on show, obviously we didn't with. Play the game. Well. I've ever seen. Squall with my experience playing in the okay, obviously, you know, my jaw your make everybody this on. I think MAMBO as is is some special. I I had to I did pleasure. Wash throughout my career and shack was dominant force and LeBron being LeBron. I really with my list, and I wonder if they get it, right? When he asked me my top five that's my top five everybody on their time. And my child was the guy that I wanna see from night in night out and have the chance to watch those guys. I wouldn't wanna watch shat having never played in his prime against the bonus against Rick Smith's against Patrick Ewing against you on the list goes on and on. So I always had that for dealer because he was so dominant in was great. But I'm talking about the guys from my Iran watch trade against shack in his prime. So it wasn't about it wasn't about making a team that could mansion in when a championship or anything like that. It was just my favorite five guys. I got a lot or that. I love but the world my frie Allen Iverson right here with Steven Steven A Smith show, ESPN radio ESPN news. But hey, I ain't gonna lie to you. I didn't even call you the interview you I called you to seek your sister's 'cause Kobe's looking for me, and I need help here. Because. Voice voice say there, you go. Go ahead. Go ahead. There's Kobe Bryant. And when he comes. I mean, he's more man of those guys. And then we'll be magic list by Ohio. Great magic man or he to what he's done in his career. But my whole thing is a lot of guaranteed. Listen, guys. And they talk about their favorite players and some guys from my everyone would say Oscar Robertson their favorite Sherry with. I didn't watch those guys right before my time. You guys. I was fortunate to watch their careers. You mansard retired? I was too much. You to go and staff to go. You know what I mean? So that's our look that event. A whole bunch of the old school guys. You know, I know what they meant to us far as paving away everything. But I want we decide guys and that excite me. And I wanna see every night. Hey, I let me ask you thoughts about my position here. I took Kobe off your list only for this one reason, I look at Kobe and m j as very similar components. So if you have one you don't necessarily need the other not to take anything Kobe's top ten all time. But I'll look in Kevin Durant. And I'm like he's about five inches taller. He's a sniper extraordinaire, and if you put Kevin Durant on the team with the other four guys you mentioned, it's perfection. That's how okay, and you and you look at it from from my perspective one time. Okay. Okay. I'll tell you. What if I had a Michael Jordan, and I had a guy that was similar. Piper Jordan, I want that guy. I had three other guys joy. I want 'em to you know, what I mean? That's just that's how it is. I mean, that's the greatest to ever play the game. And that says a lot about Kobe even compare him to might say a lot about the Brian. You can even compare Him him. to my definitely not a man to be declared to the greatest to ever play the game. So that's great Kobe in the burners Allen Iverson right here with Steven ESPN radio. ESPN news..
