Tim Scott's Charming and Engaging Style Sets Him Apart in the Race

"I want to talk first about Tim Scott. He released the Tim Scott dot com video. It is the opposite of everyone else in the race thus far. He charming and warm. He's engaging and smiling. What do you think are his chances? First of all, I love Tim Scott. I think he's exactly the image, the style, the mood, the attitude, the Republican Party, should have. If it wants to win a big and solid majority instead of trying to eke out 50.1% or some minimal or winning a plurality or something like that. I do think it's kind of funny when he even tries to he even his negative is kind of positive. Yes. Democrats and Biden, have you seen the video yet? Have you seen the video? Okay. And it was fascinating to see what he tried to do the negative stuff, the red meat, and you could just tell that's not Jim Scott's style, right? They are trying to destroy our neighborhood. He's not quite smiling, but just that tone of his voice. Amulet and energetic and curious. Ivanka. Yes, yes, exactly. I've had a chance to talk to him a couple of times. My parents who are quietly active in South Carolina politics of met him a bunch of times. I think really highly of them. It's going to be tough to get the Republican nomination. If your name isn't Donald Trump and it's not Ron DeSantis.

"I'm simping for the other side because I'm on the view. That type of person is on a Navarro. Let me play the clip of her celebrating Trump's indictment and also mocking his grandchildren at the same time. Road clip one. Donald Trump finally won a popular vote yesterday. The grand jury voted to indict him. You know, I was thinking last night. Boy, 'cause I was reading this article where Ivanka and Jared apparently want to start their new life in Miami and I was thinking, you know, they now can give their children the distinction of having matching mug shots for their both of their grandfathers. You can pick whether you want Charlie Kushner or Donald Trump. Mug shot, if you are Jared and Ivanka's child. Look, I do think that for the longest time in this country, Donald Trump has gotten away with things because the Republicans allowed him because in the political endowment that an impeachment Republicans allowed him to get away with it. Yeah. Justice system. Like in so many other countries. I've heard many Republicans say that this is the destruction of democracy. No, it is the strengthening of democracy and the justices. Yes. That we are holding back off of my show. Get the hag off of there. You know, the interesting thing is that I could listen to an argument like that if it was rooted in some type of intelligence. He got away with it because the Republicans, he got away with what. They impeached him over phone call.

Charlie Takes Us Back to February 2020...

"Back in February of 2020, just about three years ago. Three years ago, boy, I remember where I was and Andrew and I were reminiscing. On a moment in time, I could write a essay, if not a short book on what could be called the last supper of Mar-a-Lago. You could actually dig up the exact date. I do remember it was late February and early March. We are on tour for my book, the maga doctrine, New York Times Best Seller, almost New York Times number one. We got so close. Amazon number one bestseller. We were traveling the country, having a great time. We were doing events all across Florida. We were doing events at Liberty University. And the news of COVID started to bubble up more and more and more. We didn't really know what to make of it. The hypochondriacs in our life were really freaking out and people were saying, oh, it's nothing is just a coal is just a flu we've been through this before. And we were concluding our book tour at Mar-a-Lago. What better place to conclude a book tour on the maga doctrine than at Mar-a-Lago? And when we get there, it was as if it was a Great Gatsby party. The energy was off the charts and there was 5 or 6 different high stakes things happening simultaneously. When we came into Mar-a-Lago, president Trump was literally meeting with jair Bolsonaro talking about big trade deals and negotiating partnerships, Mike Pence was there meeting with some people. Jared Kushner and Ivanka are meeting with some people. Tucker Carlson was there just to go meet with Donald Trump to warn him about COVID. Kimberly Guilfoyle's birthday party was happening. And then we were there. It was, it was a circus, but in a good way. And the energy was off the charts the attitude. That night in late February, 2020 was that Trump could not lose. There was nothing that could happen. The economy was roaring, morale was up. We were going to run up against this Biden guy. It was a joke. There was an aura of invincibility. The election was 8 or 9 months out. There was almost an attitude of what are they going to throw at the bulletproof Teflon Trump now? And yet there was that little whisper of what's this virus? What's this, what's this thing? And it was very interesting when Pence left the evening early and he didn't seem too happy. Pence left and remember Pence was tasked with looking into the virus and was actually in charge of the virus response and he kind of left and you could read something into it, but did he know something about it? Maybe maybe not. All while this was happening. Donald Trump and his administration did not know. That Anthony Fauci was working in the shadows to cover up the origins of this virus.

"Know Ivanka And Jared Ivanka Trump Jared Kushner They've been subpoenaed to testify In front of the rogue phony special counsel in Washington D.C. Jack the Ripper Smith Now Jack the Ripper Smith is subpoenaing anything that moves including things that don't move actually Because he's not interested in doing justice he's trying to seek and destroy and I've explained about this man's past in the recent past I was overturned by the Supreme Court in an 8 to zero ruling because he was way over zealous in his prosecution of bob McDonald the former Republican governor of Virginia I explained how he lost a jury trial In the John Edwards case with his girlfriend or pregnancy how they used money raised by donors to put her up in an apartment and take care of her and this guy Jack the Ripper Smith concluded that that violated the election laws and of course Edwards one of his defenses was I relied on the election law people Giving me advice the experts the lawyers And so Jack the Ripper lost that one too So they sent him off to The Hague They figured he'd be more comfortable hanging around genocidal mass murders And prosecuting them So the attorney general of the United States meritless Garland he decided that would be the perfect guide who the point is a special counsel to go after Trump And now what the guy's done He's tried to violate a privilege that goes back to at least the Roman Empire probably before the attorney client privilege Hence due process under our Bill of rights and our constitutional system

Ivanka Trump Does Not 'Plan to Be Involved in Politics'

"I'm continuing my discussion of Trump's big announcement, but I also want in this segment to broaden the discussion to look at sort of a post mortem of what happened in the recent midterms. Now, a couple of details with regard to Trump, the first thing is I saw a very interesting statement by Ivanka Trump, basically saying I'm stepping away from politics. Now she didn't clearly say that she was doing this along with her husband, Jared Kushner. She says, quote, I'm choosing to prioritize my young children and the private life we are creating. And so I think what she's trying to say is that I'm not going to be appearing on campaign rallies with my dad. And I'm also going to stay away if Trump is reelected from the Trump administration. And to the degree that she means herself and her husband, Jared Kushner, I think this is a good thing for them, but it's also a very good thing for Trump. It's a good thing for Trump because it's always complicated where when you have a close family that are anchored in a position of great authority and power and trust in The White House. Everybody else doesn't know how to navigate with regard to them. Of course, they are trusted. But on the other hand, they're not necessarily experienced now Jared Kushner in some ways did bring some experience. He was very well connected in the Middle East. And his impact, I think in some ways was positive because he helped a broker important deals, the move of the embassy to Jerusalem, the Abraham accords where Arab countries made a pact with Israel that would have seemed unimaginable. In fact, people like John Kerry said it's ridiculous. You can't get this kind of agreement without the Palestinians and Trump sort of made it look easy. So I'm not implying that Jared Kushner didn't do anything, but I also think that what happens very often for a business guy like Kushner is he tends to look at The White House as a way of kind of making connections.

"Well, I agree with you. Because Donald Trump's second term, we've got to have the people behind them not just in Congress, but the people on his staff that support him, I think I've endured who are also liberal, are responsible for some of the stupid decisions that were made during Donald Trump's first term. It's his daughter and his son in law. I agree with that, but that doesn't mean they have to be a part of his administration. Look, I don't mind if Trump gets reelected. I don't mind Jared and Ivanka showing up for Christmas or Hanukkah. I don't have a problem with that, but that's the only time I want to see him in that White House. The only time. That's the only time too. It's been there was a nightmare. I want Donald Trump and it's not an if it's when he's going to be reelected. There's people out there right now today. There's rumors again about a discussion with Merrick Garland, which proves that he's on the verge of indicting Trump and I have to laugh at that because it's always, we got him this time. We got him this time. Donald Trump is not going to get indicted. And if he does, that is because we have a crooked system and that will spark that will unleash some very bad things in this country, and we don't need that.

Amber Athey: Trump Has a Unique Sense of Loyalty

"I think that's definitely a part of it The other piece is that I think Trump has a unique sense of loyalty in that he really admires personal loyalty and political loyalty maybe didn't mean as much as in loyalty to the cause He really preferred loyalty to him as a person And that comes from his days in business That's a good trait to have in business In politics maybe not so much because he ended up being surrounded a lot by yes men who would tell him what he wanted to hear but maybe wasn't actually the best course of action And I actually wrote a piece for the spectator back and I think it was June of 2020 about the influence of Jared Kushner and to some extent Ivanka in the administration as well because they were Democrats their entire lives And so I mean I don't know that they were seeking power for themselves or if they just disagreed with Trump on stuff and had a different idea of where the administration would go But when you have a family member who's in there telling you certain things that's a lot harder to push back on or say that they're wrong or stupid when compared to when you just hire someone off the street who you don't have that familial connection with So I think that was a problem too where he did have family members in there who didn't have the same idea of the American first agenda And ultimately Trump I think was too loyal to family to push back on that

What did bail bar look at to be convinced? He certainly hasn't seen or hadn't seen by them the evidence of 2000 mules. But nevertheless, apparently he was a credible enough to convince Ivanka that that Trump lost the election. Look, who cares what Ivanka Trump thinks about this? This is someone who is not even someone all that interested in politics. So maybe from a family point of view, it's modestly interesting. Here is Benny Thompson Donald Trump was at the center of that conspiracy. Well, first of all, you haven't proven it was a conspiracy. Where's the conspiracy? Show us that all the people who came to D.C. are winning the capitol conspired with each other to do that. They didn't manifestly they didn't. And in fact, what Trump said to people was to peacefully and patriotically march to the capital, he didn't join them. He didn't go inside the capitol. He didn't tell them to go inside the

"The New York attorney general has gotten court authority to depose former president Trump, Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump Jr.. Now the last two will be matter of fact. There's not that it's hell. The accountants withdrew their bank statements. If you think that the Trump kids or the president looked at the bank statements, okay, you can believe that. There's no evidence of that. I'm not sure what the book show, I don't know if they're cooked. I don't know if they borrowed money against fake assets. I don't know any of that stuff. Neither do you. All I know is I could prep Don Junior. I could prep Ivanka to do a deposition. I'm not even good at that, but I could do it. I could be the greatest lawyer in the world. I could be federal judge dick Leon, really one of the better litigators I ever saw work. I could be, I could be dick Hauser, but you'd have to get him off the golf course. And he doesn't do that anymore. Basically, at a restaurant, at home or in a golf course. And I get the best lawyer in the world. I get Stephen Larson in LA. That's the guy I'm calling whenever I get in trouble. And say, you've got to do depo prep with former president Trump.

"In order to obtain this remarkable indictment today against the company of former president. Donald trump and the company's longtime chief financial officer near prosecutors had the battle all the way that the us supreme court twice to get access to trump tax and financial documents that the president had fought to keep secret. Trump lost that fight ultimately and in february prosecutors did finally get access to millions of pages of trump's taxes that was february when they got access by may they'd impaneled a special grand jury to meet three days a week to consider the evidence to consider potential charges. Today's indictment and the fifteen felony charges that were unsealed today. that's the first public facing product of that process. It may not be the last as far as we know that grand jury is still sitting and is expected to sit until the end of the year. Right now there's only two known entities that have access to millions of pages of trump financial and tax documents to review one of them is that prosecutor's office which today unveiled these fifteen felony charges against the former president's business. The other entity is a small reporting team at the new york times which obtained more than deck a- decades worth of trump tax documents and won a pulitzer prize for their writing about it since twenty. Nineteen they'd been chronicling. How the former president and his family and his business has spent years among other things aggressively avoiding paying taxes. Joining us now is a member of that reporting team. Suzanne craic investigative reporter for the new york times suzanne. I've been really looking forward to talking to you about this. Thank you so much for having me reading the indictment today and knowing what prosecutors said today in court do you feel like you. Could you saw some of this coming with what you were able to report on about. Trump's tax practices and business practices. You know we've been looking now at his finances for five or six years and we got a hold of his taxes in published a story that came out in twenty twenty around not in there are a number of discrete issues that we saw that we think still need to be surfaced. I'm not surprised about today. It seemed actually interesting about today that it was built more around alan wiesel taxes than it was around donald trump's taxes. So i think they're still working their way through the investigations continuing. And you know we saw when we were going through through our work four or five or six discreet issues. that are. i'm sure of. I've heard or of interest to to the manhattan. Ua in their investigators one of the things that caught my eye is your reporting from last fall about a scheme that you uncovered basically by comparing different financial documents. Which showed that. The president's ivanka trump was paid as a consultant in a way that seemed designed to avoid paying taxes on some of her income away that would have been advantageous both to her and also to the trump organization. I wondered if you saw any reflections of that scheme that you described particularly in this later parts of the indictment what they described ongoing schemes involving multiple executives around the way their their compensation was was described to authorities. Sure did feel a piece to me what we saw when we were doing our work with the payments some of which went to vodka trump. You're seeing money. That's coming out and being allocated Allen wiesel briquet some of that through through a certain payment and with with ivanka trump what we saw in in its others or involved as well there was twenty six million dollars we've found in consulting fees that were being paid from entities. Donald trump controls outward. We couldn't see who they were who they were going to. But we saw them going out and it was like. Wow when we saw it we were like where were these going. And then what we found as we went along was we were comparing the taxes to other documents. We had public documents other documents. We saw some of it actually went to a company that is controlled by trump is an officer up and then paid out to ivanka trump. Why is it red flag. Because she's got she's an officer of the trump organization and has she's paid more than two million dollars and she's also getting consulting fees and that's sort of something that right away should be the. Irs would be looking at it and saying. Hey they're only supposed to sort of payment should be ordinary and necessary in the you have to question why somebody who's making two million dollars at the trump organization is also getting consulting fees so you're sorta like what's going on and what we are reporting suspected. And we reported about was this was an attempt by donald trump to reduce his taxable income into transfer money to his kids.

"You taking notes. The criminal bleeping conspiracy. What are you thinking. They kept internal written records of the stuff. They were otherwise very carefully. Keeping off the books really and a prosecutor prosecutors apparently now have that audacious and sweeping how the prosecutor described it. And here's here's just one last point and this is what we're going to talk about tonight with somebody who knows these things the scheme to have. Trump's company pay for personal stuff for trump organization executives as describing the indictment as a scheme. So not only do those executive to have to pay for those things out of pocket they would thereby dodge taxes on that both from the company side and the employees. The indictment says that scheme was not limited to ellen weisselberg and his family members who are compensated in that way they describe other people who worked for the trump organization who benefited from this allegedly illegal tax evasion scheme similarly the indictment says there were other trump organization executives who worked for the company but they were regularly paid in ways that were designed to disguise their payment from tax authorities. They were regularly paid in ways to make. It look like they weren't getting compensated. As trump organization employees they were getting paid as consultants or something and has important tax consequences both for the company and for the executive getting paid that way. That's all spelled out in the indictment. It's spelled out in the indictment as a further part of the scheme to defraud no other executives behind besides allen wiesel burgers described as the beneficiaries of that fraud but it is explicitly spelled out that he wasn't the only one who benefited from that kind of a scheme. I will also tell you that is exactly the kind of scheme described by new york times reporters in september in their pulitzer prize winning expose of trump's financial adventures. They specifically described a scheme like that a scheme like the one outlined in today's indictment as it related to ivanka trump the president's daughter the times described in detail financial records. They discovered that showed ivanka. Trump being paid both as an employee of the trump organization and as a consultant to the trump organization in a way that seemed custom designed to try to evade taxes. Both for the company and for her. That is the executive scheme described at the end of the indictment prosecutors. Say that weisselberg benefited from such a scheme and that other executives did too. They are not named in this indictment but that is the ivanka scheme. Describe last fall in the new york times. And like i said. Apparently there's more to come from this investigation. We've got much more on that..

"The rachel maddow show. We did nine eastern on. Msnbc leona helmsley. remember her. She went to prison. She was a multi-billionaire actual multi-billionaire for real she was president of helmsley hotels which was a high end luxury group of two or three dozen hotels including the park lane in new york city and the helmsley palace. She herself appeared in ads for some of her hotels bragging about how rich she was. And how exacting she was and how she needed absolutely the best service and the all the most luxurious stuff and so she insisted on it at all of her hotels. And that's why you should come stay at hotels sort of familiar. Stick at this point. I know but it worked for for helmsley hotels in the nineteen eighty s until it didn't turns out despite being a billionaire despite not only the image of immense wealth but the actuality of it leona helmsley and her husband had engaged in a number of chiseling tax cheats including having a whole bunch of renovations. Done at a helmsley vacation. Home in greenwich connecticut. Leona helmsley's private home renovations on that home including like putting in a dancefloor and stuff but she builds the renovations to the hotel company. She had the helmsley hotel company. Paid to do those renovations on her private home that had for her the double benefit of her not having to pay for those renovations herself and also her hotel company got to deduct the payments as a business expense. Even though they weren't it was just stuff. She wanted personally yes. She went to prison the trial where she got convicted Probably made her even more famous than her. hotels had. this is headline july twelfth. Nineteen eighty nine in the new york. Times made testifies helmsley denied paying taxes. Quote leona helmsley. Once told a housekeeper at her connecticut home that only the little people pay taxes. The housekeeper testified yesterday at mrs helmsley's tax fraud and extortion trial. The witness elizabeth bomb said the conversation took place at the helmsley's home in greenwich four to six weeks after she was hired in september. Nineteen eighty-three miss baum said that she and mrs helmsley. We're in a back hall of the eleven million dollar home. I said you must pay a lot. Of taxes is bomb testified. She said we don't pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes. Ms baum testified that staff salaries were paid by helmsley businesses and that her paycheck was issued by the harley hotel. Chain which is based in cleveland miss baum also said she ordered groceries and household supplies for the greenwich house from the park lane hotel in new york city. The items were delivered in a hotel van. She said assistant. Us attorney kathy. Cyborg ask ms bomb. If she ever purchased food locally in greenwich. She said she did so only a few times. She testified quote. I bought something for the house that we ate. She testified that when she asked mrs helmsley to reimburse her for the cost of that food mrs helmsley said to her quote. You bought it you pay for it real peach right leona. Only the little people pay taxes. Helmsley went to prison for that scheme and more. That's that's game in which she used her business as a tool for chiseling petty tax fraud. Which is both a crazy thing for a super-rich person to bother with right and it turns out. It's exactly the kind of crime that super rich people think they can get away with and that they can get caught for particularly if they are brazen about it. I mean leona homes. It was having her business pay or provide for her personal living expenses including the salaries for her made and other servants at her private vacation home in the renovations there even the food there should the business pay for all of it instead of her pain for it that meant nothing comes out of her pocket and the business gets to deduct all of that for tax purposes. She was convicted on thirty. three counts. people sort of famously shouted at her and taunted her on on the courthouse steps up to her conviction. She went to prison in nineteen ninety two when she got out of prison. She had a community service hours to perform. She apparently tried to get her employees to perform the community service for her. The court found out about it and so then she got more hours. The on a helmsley died in two thousand seven. Nearly every headline on every obituary called the ex-convict the queen of mean when she died using business to pay for your personal stuff as a way to avoid taxes. That's a tried and true way to go to prison and being famous doesn't necessarily help you. Avoid that being infamous or being famous you remember on seinfeld. There was a character called the soup. Nazi he we ever rule in this. Show don't talk about nazis unless you're talking about actual nazis except in the case of the soup nazi. That was his character on the show. He had all these really specific rules. For how exactly you were supposed to order soup at his restaurant and if you didn't follow the rules he screamed at you. No soup for you. The soup nazi on seinfeld was based on a real guy. A storefront soup place on west fifty fifth street in manhattan. Run by a guy who really would scream at you if you didn't order fast enough or if you didn't stand in exactly the right place the cfo for the soup nazi's soup company. Went to prison turns out for years. If god forbid you worked at the soup nazi place you would get paid through. All sorts of little chiseling off the books schemes designed to avoid taxes. And so the dude went to prison running your business in such a way that your business provides personal stuff to executives of the company and then writes it off like those are business. Expenses compensating the employees at your business in ways that are designed to hide that compensation from tax authorities. These are tried and true path's to prison even if you're not like a tax accountant even somebody who studies these things even if you're not a lawyer if you're somebody who just watch is seinfeld or read a single tabloid newspaper in the eighties even for comically high profile people. This is a tried and true way to end up in the crowbar hotel. Which is why presumably most people who try to commit those crimes no that they ought to be subtle about it. Mostly not all though and what new york prosecutors spelled out in court today was a variety of this kind of alleged crime that.
