Charles Yu Talks About Interior Chinatown

"Charles. You joins us now from irvine california. His latest novel is interior. Chinatown at just won the national book award for fiction. Charles thanks for being here. Thank you kremlin. I'm excited to be here and let's start with that. Winning the national book award. Your speech was so great. I just loved it because you used seemed genuinely surprised. Don't what was that moment like for you. I was genuinely surprised. I was screaming. As they're reading the citation my family. And i wear all sort of looking at each other and just yelling and we didn't know what to do and my son after while that i think you need to give a speech and so i sort of pulled myself together but i didn't really because then i proceeded to forget to thank my wife my kids and my parents so a half of whom were in the room with me. It was just awful. You know there's a fine tradition. Though i think of of leaving like the most important people out in acceptance speeches hoax out. I don't know. Do you think it would have been different. If it had been in real life. I guess it may must have been nice to even if you forgot to thank them at least have all those people. Those class close family members in the room with you. One of the weird unexpected. I guess benefits of having a virtual ceremony was that we got to hug each other immediately after and then change back into shorts. And why didn't you think you'd win. The chances are pretty good. When they're you know only a certain number of finalists. that's true. I suppose maybe underestimated the chances a little bit but i i don't know it just seems like something that happens to other people. Well it happened to you. I think deservedly. So this is your fourth book affection and they all have really amazing. Titles which i'm gonna read aloud. And then i love you to start. Walk us through them before we talk about this latest novel interior chinatown so the titles are third class superhero. How to live safely in a science fictional universe. And sorry please thank you which is a collection of stories. I mean just those titles thanks. I do enjoy titles. I wish there were a job where you could just title things. Maybe i'm trying to make up that job. I don't know what that would be exactly but yeah it's fun it helps me both. I think sometimes have a handle on what i'm trying to do and also i just imagined when somebody encounters that title. I'm hoping that they get that feeling of. Oh i want to flip to that page and see. What is that you know. It's funny when you say like you wish you could have a job coming up with. Titles i just feel like i have to bring up the fact that writing fiction is not your first job. It's not your only job that you started off as a corporate lawyer. How did you get from that life to this one. Well it took a while. I graduated from law school in two thousand one and as i was supposed to be studying for the bar I found myself in the bookstore instead. Reading george saunders and lorrimore and and people like that and and just kind of diving into the world of i guess contemporary fiction at that time and just getting really excited about it and i think also procrastinating from studying and so then i I started to write these sort of weird. The first thing i wrote was A love story. That is a set of physics problems like that you would find an undergraduate physics textbook Thought i don't know what this is but it's something to do you know on nights and weekends when i'm waiting for waiting for the senior associate to tell me all things did wrong in my merger agreement so severe that it. It'd be it was just this sort of thing. I was doing on the side for many years. And somehow i was creeping towards this. Tv land without even realizing it. Because a few years ago. I i was at work at the time working in house for a tech company as a lawyer and i got a call to come meet for potential spot on the writing staff of this show westworld and i thought well this is. This is not going to happen. And but somehow they hired me so so that was few years ago. And that's what i've been doing since as my day job

"County. And highly populated areas, including parts of Irvine, California. Are being threatened by this massive fire, Mr Producer. You know this? Ah This praying and bang to climate change needs to end and these governors and legislatures and others need to do their damn jobs. I know this area. Well, because thie home my son used to live in how they're demanding evacuations and these air, relatively heavily populated suburbs, Mr Big The Miller's house after house after House townhouse after townhouse after townhouse. In the thousands. There are hills there that are always dry. Because of the lack of rain. With the environmental choke hold they have on that state. And they brand and praying to a climate change. They're not doing their jobs out there. They're not doing their jobs. And people have suffered a lot of them and a lot more now going to suffer as a result. It's amazing to me how many people tens of millions of people in this country could be persuaded by by abstract theories and phony arguments. But that's exactly what's going on. And that takes place. Two damn often. It's going to cost people their lives and has caused people their lives. It's like healthcare for all. It's a right. Okay, great. These are the same people that ran the Veterans Administration for decades. And during the Obama Biden administration is the president is mentioned over 300,000 vets died because they didn't get their healthcare in time. Doesn't matter if it's a right a privilege. You can't get it. You can't get it. I'll promise you the moon I left. And the delivery Attard. You know, seeing the check ins and like, turn on, Khun, give anyone.

Happy Friday, one and all sometimes success backfires on you. That might be the case with water burger cult favorite burger chain. Founded in Corpus Christi Texas back in nineteen fifty founder, Harmon Dobson's vision was to offer a made to order, five inch burger huge time that would prompt diners to exclaim, what a burger it worked in spades over the last sixty nine years. The chain grew in two thousand one the Texas legislature named water burger a Texas treasure today. There are more than eight hundred watt burgers in ten states with annual sales of more than two billion dollars. But until this month, it remained family owned on June fourteenth Dobson's announce they sold a controlling interest to merchant Bank in Chicago which intends to further expand, what a burger, but here's where the chains vary status as Tex. Sys- treasure hurts Texans are livid in Austin, a fan posted a sign saying, dear Chicago. If you hurt her kill you an Instagram post showing a picture of the sign got more than sixteen thousand likes and comments like, don't Chicago, my water burger and naturally dough mess with Texas. They warned the new owners to keep their hands off the menu, the burger recipe the catch up and even the mustard. Many commenters asked why the family didn't sell to an investor in Texas, y'all when you build a company with a following his rabbit as water burgers will change in ownership and expansion is a very tricky thing. Indeed, the company needs to maintain its identity, even as it scales up beyond the difficulty of family succession after three generations. What a burger may feel the need to expand to compete with its rivals. Arguably, its biggest rival is every hamburger chains biggest McDonald's, but suggest any what a burger loving Texan. The McDonald's has anything in common. With their favorite burger place and you may get run out of state. So who poses the biggest problem for what a burger one possibility dare I say it is Irvine, California based in and out burger, which Texas monthly reports has as big a cult following in California, as water burger does at home in and out recently expanded into the Lone Star state horrifying Texans who are already unhappy with an influx of Californians into the state much less their hamburgers, the seventy year old west coast chain, though, does pose a threat to what a burger at home prompting taste tests, competitions in columns about who's burgers, really best. Spoiler alert here, despite lauding in an out withdrew worthy compliments, Texas. Monthly's blind taste testers ruled what water burger to be best hands down. Well over its seven decades in existence. Family owned in and out burger has been expanding even more cautiously than what a burger it has some three hundred locations compared to what a burgers, eight hundred but recently crossed, not just the Texas State line, but also Colorado's where it plans to open fifty new stores. Both companies face competition from other fast rising chains to shake shack five guys in smash burger could give either one or both a run for their money. So where will what a burger go next and we'll Texans ever forgive them. Chicago's. And obvious guests as is the mid west in general, and at least one, a communist familiar with what a burgers, new owner speculates that it plans, an expansion nationally along the lines of McDonald's and Burger King, but not to worry, Texas. He says they'll keep what makes water burger, whatever and just help spread Texas culture across the country. Now that's the way to play it. And that might just take the sting out of this deal for disappointed, Texas. From wondering this business daily. Jefferson Graham here talking tech weekend edition, where once again, we are talking about YouTube, and it's massive kid problems. You think about YouTube, and you would expect that the number one channel on YouTube would belong to a brash foul mouth video gamer, like Pudi pie. A celebrity heavy Tien like music videos from Arianna 'Grande, or footage in the Kardashian sisters. But for today, it's all about nursery, rhymes and potty songs. You heard it here, folks, the number one most viewed YouTube channel in the US belongs to a team of animators from Irvine California that produces weekly animated preschool, sing alongs under the cocoa Mellon brand in the last thirty days alone coca Mellon has pulled in over two and a half billion video views, which averages out to eighty three million young viewers daily by comparison, the major four TV broadcast networks average just under thirteen million viewers daily during the TB season. So this is a. Problem. Well, it is, when you keep going down the chart and you see that six of the top ten channels are also targeting babies toddlers, and first time students, yet, YouTube, you have to be thirteen at least to watch the network. That's never stopped parents. But those are the rules, which brings us to the issues because YouTube is more than just nursery rhymes and play dates. It's also Hitler was right, Juzar, bad porn softcore porn, a lot of stuff on the that parents would not want their kids watching it's everything this week reports surface at the Federal Trade Commission was set to respond to complaints from interest groups to get YouTube to clean up its act for it's handling of children's videos. And according to the Wall Street Journal YouTube is looking at potentially doing something really radical like removing all kid programming from the network and putting it instead on. On his little used YouTube kids app, which is aimed at babies and toddlers YouTube, neither confirmed or denied it saying that they consider lots of ideas for improving YouTube, and some remain, just that ideas. But clearly Google needs to do something never Riecke suggested. It's not the that separating the content is not the solution, particularly since very few people watch the YouTube kids app, which is really aimed at babies and toddlers, not at preteens. You to keep saying it's kinda get better machine. Learning artificial intelligence, some human involvement are going to catch more of the videos that shouldn't be on the network. But you know go type in Disney plus porn and see how much stuff you find on the network that as a parent might concern you, you can find it. I can find it and trust me day should be able to find it, but they don't. So here's what needs to happen. Google should curate. It's kid content akin to how it's done on TV videos would need to be submitted watched an approved now that would be a lot more expensive, but a whole lot cheaper than paying the government, a giant fine, which it might have to do per the FTC. Says a lot about. All right. Some of the big stories that we're covering more on the college cheating scandal, the Boeing story at all. Yeah. Yeah. Forgot that little Mueller thing came down yesterday. Oh, yeah. That one and we're going to talk a whole lot about that. I wish it were cleaner. I swear I wish you were cleaner either. Yes. There was obstruction. Or no. There was no obstruction done finished conversation over. So instead, I mean, I think I think it is done finished over. It's just that Muller didn't make the call him barmy. But Lawler did say there was evidence on both sides as to obstruction. And he just didn't think it would reach the level of criminality where on the collusion issue. He outright said there is there was no collusion statement of fact done. No. Criminality argument just there wasn't any. And so he now leaves open the question of was there collusion at all. Or was there collusion that simply didn't meet the level of reasonable doubt that could be prosecuted? And of course, the Democrats are going to take that and go completely nuts with that. They can't go nuts with it until they if and until they have the report, oh, that's not true. They have their own investigation or they have their own they can draw their own conclusions based on their own evidence. And that's far as weather Muller meant definitely well. He said, it doesn't exonerate anybody. So I guess he didn't conclude. All right. There's no way there is collusion though. He could no he concluded. There was no collusion. He can tell. He says he said there was no collapse. You say, no. The obstruction of the obstruction counts they were looking at collusion and obstruction. And it was for example, if you there is some kind of attempt to commit a crime, or you know, about it. But there isn't enough evidence. That happens all the time with prosecutors. Yeah, there's something there. But the rain enough. It's gonna be a long day. I can tell we have John Thomas coming in this morning. And we're trying to get Ken Starr, and we're gonna have a we have. Now, we haven't received a confirmation yet by Ken likes doing this show because he happens. Love Jonny Lee. Not me. Now, jennifer. And what he's committed to cause needless to say, you think he's being asked for an interview or two. Based on what the Muller reports said yesterday. So in the meantime, why don't we do a guys? It's a handle on the news. Jennifer, Jones Lee, Wayne, Resnick and me lead story..

Come Work For Us: We'll Help Pay Down Your Student Loans

"Support for this NPR podcast and the following message come from NBC's new drama the enemy within Erica shepherd betrayed her country. Now, she's the FBI's only hope in stopping America's greatest enemy. But can she be trusted Mondays beginning February twenty fifth on NBC the size of the average student loan has nearly doubled over the past decade or so collectively Americans carry more than one point five trillion dollars in student loan debt. And some employers are seeing that as an opportunity they're offering to help repay loans on workers behalf as a way to attract and keep their talent. NPR's? Yuki Noguchi reports carrier Brian graduated from college six years ago with a political science degree and twenty eight thousand dollars in student loans. It was stressful because coming out and having to have a a payment of about two hundred seventeen dollars a month. I it just seems like a lot of money to pay back when you don't really know where you're going to be working how much you're going to be making O'Brien. Now twenty-seven wanted to save for a home or a wedding, but loan payments were her biggest roadblock. I've wanted to be debt free before I got married and ideally come to the table with some savings, then a year and a half ago O'Brien joined Fidelity Investments in Irvine California to work in client relations. She was told that after six months, she'd be eligible to have the company contribute to our loan payments. So I quickly marked my calendar. I call my parents at night and told them how excited I was because I had no idea an employer would help you pay off your student loans such benefits are relatively new and unusual. Only four percent of employers surveyed by the society for human resource management offer it, but you can see why it's increasingly popular, especially as school loans, become a bigger shackle. Data suggests student debt is delaying or preventing people in their twenties and thirties from buying homes at the same time unemployment is low and skilled workers hard to find employers who pay down student loans or more attractive. Live especially to younger workers, Kim Wilem is managing partner at Baker Tilley's human resource consulting group millennial turnover is different than any other generation before. And if I'm able to recruit somebody based off this benefit and then retain them for twelve or twenty four months longer than I'm getting a reward out of that. There are possible downsides often if an employee lease before a certain amount of time, they must repay the money. But while him says that can backfire sometimes what we see is that an employee becomes disgruntled, and then they're working they're simply because they don't wanna have to repay. But many say the upside is big at fidelity, for example, more than a quarter of its worker signed up for the program, which is only three years old. It pays up to ten thousand dollars over five years. Oshawa shrieking Taya a vice president of fidelity says those who participate stay longer at the company for us really focusing on retaining those. People especially after we've invested in training them as a really important thing. The program success lead fidelity to now sell it as a service other employers can offer she train beer ball is director of congressional affairs for the site for human resource management. She says loan repayment would be more affordable to nonprofits and small businesses. If congress makes it tax free for employers and workers more employers might be able to offer student loan repayment as a benefit to their employees, even without the tax benefits. Some employers say, it's worthwhile Madeline Macintoshes CEO of penguin Random House, which started offering loan repayment two years ago. She says about ten percent of the publishing companies five thousand employees participate, including she says older people who returned to school or took out loans for kids. I feel like it has really of outsized, emotional or psychological benefits for employees. I feel like if they were ranking it this would be up there at the top. And I don't think it's the most expensive. It's. Cost the company about a million dollars to date, far less. She says than what it spends on health insurance. "Males like nineteen to thirty five who are addicted to caffeine is obviously the subtext here. The well at the time, I guess Starbucks that was the one market. They couldn't crack they couldn't love nineteen thirty five year olds so Schultz at some other C suites fly to Irvine California to the blizzard headquarters to think about a partnership, the idea was as some kind of Starbucks world of warcraft rewards card. And they go to the blizzard headquarters and Scholtz sees this fourteen foot statue. Of an orc warrior writing a horse just shakes his head at it. And this partnership never materialized. And could you imagine? How different history would have been. I believe before that he says while I was concerned warcraft may not be part of our brand. Not consistent with our values. Not consistent with our co company value. Yeah, we'll see about it. What they for their own private army. I like the idea that Howard Schultz was just scared by the orc. I asked my personal blackwater security check under my bed, sometimes love being still being afraid of monsters when you're sixty. Okay. So here's another section from this other book. Pour your heart into it where he talks about how copy I just got that. Basically, he talks about he was inspired to basically invent the idea of Espresso bars in the United States because when he took over at Starbucks, they didn't sell coffee retail. They sold it only bags, and he made that he said, let's turn it the coffee bars and he brought Espresso from Italy to the United States. And he talks about how he was inspired to do it here. There's no better place to truly savor the romance of life than Italy. So he talks about how the talian do things differently. There street harassment on scooters. They have unparalleled appreciation for the five pleasures of daily life. They've figured out how to live in perfect balance. They understand what it means to work and equally what it means to relax. Enjoy live. They embrace everything passion, nothing, mediocre the infrastructure. Italy is appalling nothing works. But the food of Italy is absolutely incredible. The architectures breathtaking the fashion still defines elegance wrong all wrong, they drink cheapest spreads on the Jian Carlo hill. Overlooking row they do that. So he talks about how he was in Milan Millau, and he he came to a spy a number of very charming Espresso shops. And he says half a block across the sidestreet. I saw another Espresso mar this one was even more crowded. I noticed that the gray haired man behind the counter greeted every customer by name, he appeared to be both owner and operator he and his customer for laughing and talking and enjoying the moment. I could tell that the customers were regulars the routines, comfortable and familiar in the next few blacks. To Morris Bresso bars. I was fascinated. It was on that day that I discovered the ritual of the romance of coffee bars in Italy. I saw how popular they were. And how vibrant each one had its own unique character, but they had one common threat, the camaraderie between the customers do each other. Well, and the barista who was performing with flair. What if he actually went by like a bunch of cruising spots and Milan? This must be what they're like about coffee customer service at this place. The operator and the customers they all get into this big foamy bath together. It's amazing says that time there were two hundred thousand coffee bars in Italy and fifteen hundred alone in the city of Milan. A city of size Philadelphia. It seemed they were on every street corner. And all we're packed my night mind started churning, and I watched wonder how many of those fucking coffee bars were destroyed or displaced by fucking Starbucks. It's like, this amazing, vibrant, unique culture that I might monopolized destroyed. I've never been to Italy. But let me ask you this these coffee bars also alcohol, and that always often not play that many of them do though some of them. So the spars. Yeah. But I think that's the thing that defining the coffee is the wires is mostly if not tireless coffee a coffee place serve boos at night becomes a par. Maybe. Okay. Well, you sort of answering the questions. Sidetrack on Ben to a place that had coffee in there. They have alcohol at night, they exist. What was it called? We'll be resolving this in the nine o'clock. This been Rick steves on Europe, we're gonna resolve this with Chris Hardwick after Chapo gotten that flicks.

"Back and we'll stay in Irvine, California. Talk to Nancy, Nancy. Thanks for holding. Hey, good morning. Jerry, good morning. Hey, we recently totaled out or twenty fifteen hundred CRV absolutely loved it loved everything about it. It took a pretty significant price increase, and there's no incentives on it. If there were still twenty eight teams out there, and I don't think there is. I think all the dealers pretty much ran out of them in December one left. It's probably a reason it's still there. But you know. There. The technology in the new newer models. CRV's? I've been real impressed with any, and you know, how to qualities could it be hard to beat? I don't think you could go wrong with either one of them, but you sound prone to Honda and telling you. CRV? He's a great choice. I think I'd just go. Give me one of those. Okay. Now, can you possibly stack at twenty eighteen to twenty nineteen together or up against each other? And what? Not to be like a twenty eighteen within Canada. Joe beyond the Martin. There was no change in CRV from two thousand eighteen to twenty nineteen that I'm aware of. I don't think they did anything different. And and now there may be some changes coming depending on how popular this rat four becomes Honda may have to do some upgrades. But right now, I think if I could find the twenty eighteen if you're going to keep it for a good while then I'd I'd deal with twenty eight teeth. Right now, didn't they didn't want to completely overhaul the the theory from seventeen this. They did. Yes. They did it show that body style is probably going to stay the same for two to three years. Probably do maybe something next year with it.
