Fresh update on "ireland" discussed on All Things Considered

"And I'm Mary Louise Kelly The last time I interviewed our next guest I introduced her as the new leader of Sinn Fein the Irish political party It was 2018 Mary Lou McDonald had just taken over and it marked a sea change She was succeeding a giant of Irish politics Gerry Adams who had led shin feign often controversially for more than three decades Since McDonald's and I spoke those three years ago Sinn Fein has grown elections last year left them the largest party the most seats in the Doyle the lower house of Ireland's parliament and poised to make gains in the Northern Irish assembly too This week finds her here in the U.S. for talks including with us Mary Lou McDonald welcome back to the program Thank you so much It's great to be with you Well and may I add welcome back to the U.S. I know because a pandemic travel restrictions you haven't been able to come So welcome back Thank you I'm delighted to be here It's been too long years and we're also appreciative and grateful that we can that we can travel again so long may have continued Since you and I last spoke again that was 2018 A lot has happened A lifetime of political developments on this side of the Atlantic And for you among other things Brexit Yes How's it going Well you know they say that there is only two certainties in life don't they Death and taxes I think we can now add Brexit to that list It is of course a very significant game changer politically and diplomatically Brexit isn't a singular event or a moment in time It changes forever Yeah in a very significant way You lead a party that would prefer there were no border but as you cross from north to south But there is a border for now and the big question in this precise moment is what that looks like with Northern Ireland now exited from the EU What could you live with It just realistically Well look the island now has been partitioned for a hundred years remarked the centenary of the partition of Ireland a catastrophic event in history that led to generations of conflict But we're also approached nearly the 25th anniversary of the good Friday agreement and the truth is since we arrived at that accord and the United States at a very significant time and delivering that for all practical purposes there has been no border on the island Any of your listeners who have visited Ireland will know that you move seamlessly from Dublin to Belfast from Derry to cork all across the island and no checkpoints But is that tenable now that the Brexit has changed It's essential I mean one of the primary motivators for dealing so comprehensively with Brexit is to ensure that there is no what they call hard border on the island of Ireland We live on a small island People work and marry and live and die all across the island and the idea that we would again having made so much progress post the good Friday room as the society moving out of conflict confidently wishing to move and create a new island and a new future The idea that we would take steps backwards and have again division and a hard border on the island is completely unacceptable That is not that is not tenable I just want to record how hard I am to hear so clearly from the current administration but also from right across from across the aisle United States politics a cure message to the British government that leave Ireland vulnerable or the good Friday agreement vulnerable to damage is not acceptable to the United States Elections coming up next spring in May in Northern Ireland Many expect your party shin Fein to win If you do will you push for a referendum on reunification of the island As you know I take nothing for granted ever in elections We know that you have to work hard But just to make this point Mary Louise there is absolutely no doubt in my mind but that within the next 5 to ten years we will be facing into referendums We will be putting the question in respect of the unification of Ireland to the people north and south And as I've been saying to colleagues on the hill on this visit we really need to start preparation now for an ordinary democratic and peaceful transition from a partition Ireland to ill united Well I was going to ask that it's actually irresponsible in my view reckless actually not to have a citizen's assembly not to have a space in which the preparation begins now in a way that involves everybody all shades of opinion and I know and the polling doubt or reflects that there is a huge appetite across the island for those preparations to men So what is your message to unionists the people and there are a lot of them who are determined to keep Northern Ireland inside the UK who will be listening to your words with horror Well no they won't I don't believe there will be listening with her because or with any great outlining a goal that runs counter Yes We have their vision for their future of their country Absolutely and I am fully aware and I fully respect that unionist colleagues will make the case politically for the union And I absolutely respect that And I'm asking enough about the conversations I'm asking just about ordinary people How do you convince them they shouldn't fear champagne What I say to everybody that I meet is that each of us has a part and a perspective in this debate And there's nothing to be feared here This is a moment of great opportunity for the whole island And even for those people who would wish to see the status quo maintained I would like to believe that those folks can still see in a united arnett and can articulate their needs and theirs and their view of what that society might look like And by the way the fact that Ireland has changed and is changing is well known to sensible people within the unionist community they know this is underway and it's a subject of conversation And I think we need to listen respectfully engage respectfully and I am up for that And I happen to believe that many many others are as well What is not up for debate is that there is more uncertainty over the future of Northern Ireland More tension in Northern Ireland over over what the future looks like than there have been in decades What is shin Fein doing what can shin Fein do to make sure that with those tensions does not come a return to the violence that defined Northern Ireland for decades the troubles Well we demonstrate the politics works That's it I mean the conflict and war and violence is the failure of politics We have to demonstrate every day that politics that the democratic institutions work and just to say although there have been some violence on the streets that that has been very very limited Those events should never happen Please don't get me wrong But I am very sure insane to you that there is no appetite anywhere in any part of society in Ireland or in the north of Ireland for a return to conflict That is over That day is gone Mary Lou McDonald is the leader of the Irish political party.

Fox's Brian Kilmeade Discusses His New Book 'The President and the Freedom Fighter'

"I'm talking to Brian kill me, you may know him from fox and friends, but he's written a lot of books. This one is called the president and the freedom fighter Abraham Lincoln Frederick Douglass in their battle to save America's soul. America soul could use a little saving right now. But we're not going to talk about that. What made you want to write a book combining these two figures? Well, I was looking for the last time I was here. You kind enough to interview me about Sam Houston, the Alamo Avengers. So I try to find an angle not plowed and the Alamo is, but San jacinto isn't 9 months later he ends up taking him out as San jacinto beating Santa Anna in 17 minutes because Texans know it, but the rest of the world. So I go, what's next? The Mexican war, I didn't think had enough. My opinion, I'm sure there's a lot there with Lee in the quartermaster grant and the fact that these generals fought on the same side and then years later, they'd be trying to kill each other and a lot of them successfully. I said, all right, the Civil War. What could I do that's not plowed ground from Ken burns a series to the remarkable book, David blight wrote about Frederick Douglas Scott? I think the book of the year, 5 years ago. And then what about Lincoln? I literally you and I gave the same situation. We get books about linking to our desks all the time, and they're all great. I'm waiting for nobody who's written been written about more. It's like maybe three people like who've written about Napoleon Jesus, Lincoln. I mean, I don't know how many books have been written about Lincoln. So yeah, what do you do for a fresh angle on the Civil War? So what I wanted to do is also I didn't mind tackling race, but I wanted to do it through quotes, not opinion. And racist never left the news, Black Lives Matter is raging at the time. And then you have you have a situation where as late as Condoleezza and rice Condoleezza Rice on the view, having to defend herself growing up in a Jim Crow south who knew all about racism, but grew up as his conservatives says, don't ever let it be an excuse. So I said, what have I talk about their parallel lives to the degree in which they read a lot of the same books? Did they overcame incredible obstacles? Nothing like Frederick Douglass. I get it. The guy was enslaved until he was in his 20 years old, two tries, got out in the second time within 7 years has a biography. It's a bestseller, and then starts a world tour and becomes famous in Scotland, Ireland, Germany, and England. This guy was a slave ten years before, but decides to come back to America because his 4 million enslaved 350,000 slave owners and he sees potential in this guy Lincoln and the Republican Party that we're finally ready to do

Keith Getty Describes New Album 'Confessio,' a Love Letter to His Irish Heritage

"Book. But we're here to talk about your album. Tell us my friend. Confessio, this goes back to Irish American route. So you're in Nashville now, but you're from Ireland, and your wife is from Ireland. And talk and talk about the album, confessio, brand new album. Will you kindly interview us before sing global last year? We started the family him saying and did sing global all last year through the pandemic. And then we were honestly our heads were just fried. And so we went home for a year. So 7 days after 7 days after sing global, we flew home, 9 11. It's an easy day to remember, getting in a plane. On 9 11, we flew back to Ireland, and we stayed in Ireland for the whole year. Like John Lennox and C. S. Lewis and Allison McGrath and many other people who you know, we come from that tiny little north coast of Ireland and we spent the year there. And this album really is a love letter to that. You know, we, you know, we come from this place that Christianity is 17th centuries old that until the 1980s gave more missionaries per capita than any country in the world. South Korea and I give the most. And but also, but also this connection as you brought our four daughters who are all American citizens. He brought them back. We're all born in America. As he brought them back to their heritage and explained to them, here's been kind of donegal or John Newton's boat came in and he wrote, begun to write amazing grace. Here's here's where beat on my vision was written. And here's our culture and we began to realize that even as musicians that everything from country music to bluegrass to gospel songs to ship note hem the day to American and Appalachian music are all outgrowths of our own scotch Irish tradition that we have. And so this album was just really, I think it's a love letter to our

Brian Kilmeade Explains Why He Wrote 'The President and The Freedom Fighter'

"Well number one it's a relief to do a book like you and I have friends and you would have me on if I had something on the history of sewing We would have and that was really why I cared about it But that's to know And yet sad that the issues that I'm talking about in the 18 50s 1860s is still exist today Not to the degree it is but we're still talking about racial unrest We're talking about an equity We're talking about reparations We're talking about how to handle it how to equal the playing field without making it unlevel for either side and how much anger we should have And then we watch conduits to rise go to the view And at the same excuse me I keep in the segregated south I don't want to make white children feel bad or something they had nothing to do with I don't want black kids to feel like they're victims And please don't let you survive on segregation because you can go to a movie theater or sit in the front of a bus and she wants to play and be killed because they were black but she led this country as Secretary of State national security adviser sovietologist in this country in 8 to two presidents You can accomplish anything even if the playing field is an equal And even if there is something unjust and nobody personified that better than Frederick Douglass Dan whenever we're going through we weren't out going into savoring We did that We know our parents We know of birthday Even if our parents are bad what about having none What about not even knowing who your siblings were What about not having close into your 7 8 years old What about is it by the time you escape and find a way to get free and by hook and cook to learn to read and write within 7 years of getting your freedom right to your biography and becoming an international bestseller and soon a lecturer whose statue sit in Scotland Ireland Germany and England today So dude I'm not saying we can all be Frederick Douglas but please don't tell me your circumstances so bad Life isn't fair I will never achieve I will never offer also soft pedal We the original sin of America No one will And I don't want to I bring quotes not opinion

'Green Fraud' Author Marc Morano Describes the Hypocrisy of These Climate Summits

"We have with us a returning to America first. The man who educated me on the climate hoax. He is the founder of the climate depot, the author of the politically incorrect guy to climate change and more recently, the green fraud, why the Green New Deal? I prefer green new steel is even worse than you think Mark morano. Welcome to one on one. Thank you so much. Happy to be here today. So where have you just got back from? Did you just get back from what is ObamaCare, Scotland, completely fallaciously, the emerald isle? Where have you been Mark? I have been in the emerald well actually, I think that's Ireland. I've been in Scotland and I did not get to go. I was there for all last week. I did not get to go in one of these private jets like Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates or Al Gore, who were all at the conference as well. I had to fly commercial, but I was there all last week at this Glasgow summit and it was a doozy because I think even the longtime observers are saying, this is as Greta would say, a blah, blah, blah, summit. Not much has happened here except a lot of virtue signaling. So what is this? They're using this acronym cop. I didn't realize it's now running for multiple weeks. Well, what is this? What is this virtue signaling stand for and who, who is their Mark? Well, this is the United Nations climate summit. Cop stands for conference of parties. Bureaucratic language that they have every year. So next year's cup 27. This year's cop 25. And this whole process started in 1992 with the Rio earth summit that then Republican president George H. W. Bush signed and got us beholden to this big monster mess and then of course the first climate agreement they came up with was the Kyoto protocol when Clinton was president. And it's been going strong since then, annual basis. And they always pick exotic location. Scotland's probably the least exotic location that they've had it. I've been the Bali South America cancun all over the world. Next year is going to be in Egypt. They like to fly all over and have giant

Exploring the Inner Hebrides

"In some ways. The traditions of scotland survive most vividly in its islands off the west coast. These are the hebrides we've invited to of our favorite scottish guides into the studio to share stories and tips on their favorite islands. Liz listener is from fife. Cullen mirrors is from glasgow. And they're both here with us now to share a little better understanding of scotland's inner hebrides. Thanks for joining us. Thank you he cullen when you Think about the hebrides. We hear that word a lot hebrides. These are the islands off of the west scotland. But there's inner and outer hebrides. What's the story there. So and our hebrides. They're basically the ones that are closer to mainland scotland to hebrides further out. So probably most people going to visit islands of scotland and are of to access lists when you're thinking of the inner hebrides which ones are your favorites in which one's the most popular with tourists. Well open which is on the west coast of scotland is known as the charing cross of the islands as the saying the air unto the lord belongs and all the it contains except the kyle's in the western isles for these are all mic planes mcleans caledonian mcleans of the fatty company. So people will come to open. And that's the jumping off point to go to the islands. So open is the charing cross. Charing cross would be the big train station in london. Somewhere you depart go to different places so open would be the jumping off point. It's the big port on the mainland. From where the ferries go absolutely so. Kyle's what is kyle's kyle's of the stretches of water so the leyland's eye for the straight and on the missiles ago everything the lord's except for the aisles and the waters and that could make prince how the the the metrolink and forwards to the islands they caught passengers. The coty fleet the cardi tourists. So this is the ferry system caledonian mcbrayer because every time i think of an island scene. There's a dramatic ferry coming across. It is just beautiful thing. And you have the jumping off point in the real terminal Open and so people coming from moscow will die sleek connect with the on out so an answer to your question. Probably the most popular are the ones closest mull. Iona we can come back to 'cause i owned is really accessible as d. Are right for a particular reason

Laughing emoji there one the happiest and most love couples. I i know that like they normally don't address this stuff. Especially the salinas stuff. I feel like hailey is really tried to stay away from talking about it because it always blows up until a much bigger thing. But i do think it is nice to have a ma like small comment from a family member jump in there. Because i don't know personally. I just feel like i was haley. It it blows up so much and you probably want to just ignore it and you know that if a friend or family member says says something this story just continues. But it's gotta feel kinda nice of somebody defend you.

Why it ever got out of clinton county. He was the illegitimate son to woman named jane. Conway who was a prostitute was actually an immigrant from dublin ireland so he was a real irishman. He was the son of an immigrant directly from ireland. The name of his father was never known. The mother may not even know who the father was at the age of to the social services in new york city took little jimmy conway and put him in the first of many homes and also being some orphan homes or whatever they not enough they're calling orphan homes anymore they call them group living situations more than likely but a large part of his early years was spent in an orphan. Home ran but roman catholic. Church ran by nuns. They'd say that after she gave him up at age two. He never saw her again. Now as with many of these throwaway kids he was in a lot of different places the institutions but a lot of different foster homes. These people take in kids and some of them are good so mark good. They're just doing it for the money and and take a man for Sexual reasons so he would suffer physical and sexual abuse. In some of these different places he had a pivotal event that really shaped life at age. "The bill on. That was thirty. Four hundred dollars. Do you just storm out on that note. Now here's how i would handle it. I would say this is an extraordinary large order that we are happy to accommodate but there seven cars behind you. So here's what. I need you to do pullover over their right to that space in our parking lot and as soon as our order's ready we will bring it out to you and we appreciate your business. But no why would i get mad. That's a huge day in sale. Two hours to put that together. Yeah it's discourteous. I did this one time. I went on a baseball trip with one of my best friends when we college. We went to twenty two cities. In twenty one days went to major league ballparks and we'd mapped it all out the night before but we decided that there may be better ways to get from one ballpark to another delta thing called an air pass. Apply anywhere. Well you go up to to up to twenty one cities in twenty one days. Wow am although you couldn't go to the city twice except where you start an end so it was perfect for going to baseball stadiums. So but what we didn't think about was we thought well there may be quits for us to get. Let's just do this at the airport so we got to the airport like insanely early like three and a half hours early and you forget that there's a line at every airport so we get up there to the ticket girl and she's and we say okay. Here's what we wanna do and we want to map this all out and the people behind us were furious. Because we're probably there for half an hour right right and that's kind of what this guy in the drive-thrus doing he's he's screwing up everybody behind him up everybody so as long as i'm not i'm not mad at the guy but he's gonna have to wait. It's going to take time to cook all that food right. it is going gonna take. I would imagine a couple of hours to actually no not a fast food place. You don't think they can put that to. They could put that order. You scrape together sixty nine large fries thirty nine orders of twenty piece chicken nuggets and three hundred and so or burger you know how. Nba players like to mess with rookies. So for years we'd be going to a road trip and we all have to be there like the media has to be there forty five minutes beforehand and then like i say it's a two o'clock flight yup all the all of the staff and non-players got to be in their seat bhai one fifteen every year. They make a rookie. Go to in and out. There's an in and outright over the airport right by the airport. Yeah and they give them an absurd order you know. They could never fill. But the smart rookies call ahead. You know like they say okay. Let's see how many people got on this plane. We've got forty people go get. eighty burgers. Eighty is eighty shakes and in and out at will always tackle it and the rookie will come back with bags and bags of food. And they're not allowed to complain or do anything. It's just kind of a rite of passage. But the smart rookies call ahead. Yeah by the way. If you're a mcdonald's employee what's the largest. Has anybody ever done something like this to you. Has anybody ever showed up in. Ordered three thousand dollars worth of food. Or what's the biggest order. Who's the biggest pain in the ass drive through window. Eight seven seven seven ten. Espn eight seven seven seven ten. Espn pay a you mentioned the rallies morales mentioned off the top of the show that you had somewhat of a work dinner last night. It was a work dinner. Are you had to say who was there. Yeah it was morales In boston and in you three people three people who paid actually believe the station pate okay. That's what i was gonna say if they didn't you should turn it in. i offered. Yeah you should turn it. You should say this was a business dinner. i wanna be reimbursed. Exactly exactly yeah. I was definitely a business dinner. It was it was not a the kind of dinner where i was like that one time. When they told us they were gonna fire. Dave singer in you and i walked out. It was shy of that but much but morale astute look an awful lot like mcklusky. By the time. I walked out of that restaurant coming up next for you wayne ellington. We talked a little while ago. We've got that coming up for you. Next mason ireland seven to ten. Espn nacer and ireland seventeen. Espn and joining us now. One of the shooter's that the lakers have added for this upcoming season. Wayne ellington wayne. Thanks for coming on. And thanks have appreciated wayne. I think that this is a perfect fit for your skill set. Not that you weren't a good fit when you were here before but that was a different laker team. The team that i would say wasn't really a championship contender. Do you feel the same way. Do you feel like the timing. This time for your second stint with the lakers is a better fit. I couldn't agree more with you You know i was the first time around was a little different situation So now you know being able to come come back and join the purple and gold under these circumstances A i'm ecstatic. That's that's an understatement. Behind phil so so wayne describe how this came. I'm always fascinated by how it came about behind the scene so i was on the air before this all went down. I'm like you've got to get wayne. Ellington wayne ellington. New shooter sars-like all over that. How did it. How did it all come down. No, no, he played twenty one minutes and he had twenty two points. I think twenty one minutes he was really good. But that's what they're doing with him because they're trying to find this. Describe what went on after the Indiana game and before last night's game with region, Rondo right? The team by the Boston, and Rondo has already been known for organizing the film sessions that aren't necessarily like sanctioned. That's not the right word. Thank that. They aren't like fishery A-Team punctuation. Right. I'm gonna watch film. If you want to be around you can join me sometimes he's on the on the team plane. He's done at the practice. Still this time it was in a hotel room of Boston. And it was a kind of pup yourself up and feel good film session. They went back and watch the Christmas day game tape where they beat the warriors. And it was a top to bottom team effort. And as they started watching it. Not only Rondo get some positive feedback from Casey p call on them. Hey, you should shoot more like look at you shooting in this game. It's it's helping us do you to do that more? But then there was a round of kind of trash talk that popped up between these eight to ten players that gathered in a hotel room in Boston. And the next day when it was a scheduled Lakers off day, you know, try to take care of their bodies as they're dealing with the time adjustment on this east coast trip. Most of those people that aren't the film session and a couple of other players go to Emerson college as one of those get what you need days. But instead of just you know, God getting shots up and doing training table stuff. They play one on one they play to onto three three or four four, and they just like a complete immersion into competitive spirit and clear their minds of of the forty two point loss in Indiana clear. Their minds of the imprinting trait that line and clearly fiend like the team had a little bit of weight off their shoulders. Of course, the trade deadline had passed when they played the Celtics, but they just seem to be a better mind base heading into that Celtics game. And they kept fighting the kept fighting, and they ended up winning it. I just I mean when when you look back at Rondos career, you know, the the he was on that dumpster fire team in Chicago that just got torn apart. He was you know, he was in New Orleans obviously last year, and you and you. "I respect and tell them to hire Rick Patino, they will be top ten and relevant instantly. All caps. Yes. We'll take lots of guts to get that done. But the rewards would be super this out last year. I did. And when we come back, I want you to tell me why it's a bad idea. I'm going to give you five reasons why it's a really good idea. Mason in Ireland. Mike, Trudell information ESPN LA. All right. Mason Ireland Mike tr in for maize, Mike, you as you mentioned I've been saying for while that somebody is going to take a chance on Rick Pitino Patino took providence to the final four you want a title at Kentucky. He wanted title at Louisville took the Knicks to the playoffs that celsius. He just wins. Everywhere. He goes now, he has an off the court reputation that is horrible that he's a little bit sleazy. Most of it involves sex. But he is a fantastic basketball. Coach UCLA probably couldn't get him. If he didn't have the baggage. But since he does he's out there. He needs redemption. If you're UCLA do you give him a look. He's sixty five. I just looked in as I say that I don't wanna get accused by Mason of being ages right for basketball. But it's always Carol, by the way, I mean to me Nick Sabin UCLA is the type of program where you shouldn't be struggling to get a really exciting coach in you shouldn't have to get Rick Pitino in all that comes with him. All of the baggage. I get that your UCLA guy. You just want to win the program to stored in that sense. But you're also tainting the program how with with everything that's from his past. Okay. You're you're the butt of a joke. Right. But everywhere you go, Greg. What do you think of the Patino idea? Yeah. I mean, I I like Rick Pitino. I love what he doesn't schools. But I don't think he's the right guy for this job. Why? Now, a lot of things that Mike was saying that he is too old. And also because of the baggage that goes with I know it's come on. Didn't John wooden build this program into what it is integrity? I'm not saying that everybody since that has been sneaker cleaning squeaky clean, and here's some stuff that goes back to wooden saying that I get all that stuff. Right. But I mean, it's just it doesn't seem like a fit to me seem like it. But you why are you desperate? You guys are both turned off. Is it fair to say you guys are both turned off most of all by the bag. I don't I don't really care if the age the age thing, I think you throw it the window because he's the same age as Pete Carroll in the same age as Nick Sabin in the same age as Bill check and all this guy's still at the top of their right? But you think that any of those guys are going to go start a new job somewhere? Chirp? I mean, I think They are. once they are done they're done, right. But Rick Pitino needs. He doesn't want his his career to end this in Greece. Right. So you went to chance to say an everywhere. He's gone. He's one. And here's my main point. Yeah. Rick Pitino off the court is a bad guy. But all of his baggage has to do a sex. Is it not fair? Just let's just funny. Okay. No. Is it not fair? To compare whether regardless of where you are politically on the spectrum. I personally think that Bill Clinton will be looked back at as a pretty good president as a pretty successful guy. Bill Clinton all of his baggage has to do with sex. It didn't make him a bad. President matter of fact, many people would say Bill Clinton, Mike, I think you would would say Bill Clinton was a pretty good president if Bill Clinton can put together that type of a presidential resume with all his sex baggage. Why can't Rick Pitino do the same things basketball? If I if I'm understanding your argument, it's that separate the basketball from any whatever it is off the court, and you're most concerned about the basketball about the getting I think I think he he to steal a line from the movie taken he has a very specific set of skills K that I think UCLA could use and develop. Their program in run it back to the top. But has not the least bit turned off by his baggage..
