"26 pass now, this is America in the morning, the death toll from that massive earthquake near turkey's border with Syria has now topped 15,000. However, there have been stories of hope correspondent Charles De Ledesma learned that rescuers freed a woman from underneath the rubble of a collapsed building First, clear and search operations with heavy machinery, then sniff a dog and hand tools. The trapped woman is pulled from the pulverized concrete rubble. And transported, not a stretcher to a nearby ambulance. Georgia's interior ministry says the young woman who was conscious during the search operation was transported to hospital. Rescue units are working around the clock, pulling more bodies from the rubble of thousands of buildings down in turkey and Syria, where the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck. I'm Charles De Ledesma. The top enlisted leader at the U.S. Air Force says she and her husband are safe after an intruder breached joint base Andrews home to Air Force One correspondent Donna warder reports it's not the first security breach there recently. The base outside Washington says an intruder breached the base and reached the home of the air force's chief master sergeant, the air base says her husband opened fire on the intruder and security forces arrived to apprehend the person. Chief master sergeant Joanne bass confirms in a statement that an intruder had reached her home, but that she and her husband are okay. Joint base Andrews is the home to the fleet of blue and white presidential aircraft, including Air Force One in February 2021, a man got through the military checkpoint onto the installation than through additional fenced secure areas to gain access to the flight line and he climbed into a C 40 aircraft. Taliban: 10 killed in bombing of Afghan religious school

"A Taliban official says that at least ten students have been killed when a bomb blast hit a religious school in northern Afghanistan. A spokesman for the interior ministry says that several others were wounded in the blast at the madrasa at a back. The capital of the northern samangan province. A residence says most of the students in the school were young boys. Video distributed by the Taliban to the media showed the blast site, a whole littered with debris, mats and shoes, with bodies and blood stains on the floor. There has been no immediate claim of responsibility, but the Afghan affiliate of the Islamic State group has been waiting a campaign of violence that has escalated since the Taliban took power in August 2021. "On the G 20. Let's get a little bit more on the FTX four like the regulators are investigating whether there was any criminal misconduct with Sam bankman fried. Being quizzed by the police and that was over the weekend in The Bahamas. So for more, let's bring in Joanna, who leads our crypto coverage. I mean, there's some staggering numbers being thrown around here, Joanna, his wealth from 16 billion to a billion, the coverage and the leverage within the businesses is quite incredulous. What is the latest headline you think that's driving the narrative? Yeah, well, now there are so many things going on, right? But one of them really is just trying to get clarity over what exactly FTX still has, what the holdings are, the bankruptcy filing was done very quickly. And so there are a lot of documents that still need to come in from that. So I think the headline would just be trying to get the clarity. Markets are still nervous, things are down again today. Solana, the token that was backed by FTX is down quite a lot even Bitcoin and ether down, dogecoins down. So we're waiting for a lot of those things. And then just waiting to see what we can find out about the results of those conversations with the police or what actions the police or regulators may take regarding FTX now. Well, another day, another set of headlines is interesting to see solano taking a real hit this morning, obviously it's associated with FTX, trying to thank you very much, we're tracking the story across the Bloomberg terminal and platform. Do you want to ask right here in Singapore? An explosion in Istanbul's tourist district yesterday killed at least 6 people and wounded 81. The Turkish officials are saying they suspect a terror attack among foxman has been tracking this story. This hits at the heart of the tourist area in turkey. What do we know? Yeah, if you've ever been down istiklal street, if you've frankly been to Istanbul, you've been to excess cloud street. You've been to the bar's restaurants, shops there. So a very hitting home essentially for the soul of Istanbul, authorities immediately considering this a terrorist attack. And then in the last few hours, the interior ministry said that it had a detained a suspect in this attack. It said the suspect has ties to the PKK, the Kurdistan Workers Party. We don't know any more details about who the suspect is, whether it's a man, whether it's a woman, there had been early reports that a woman had been involved in this. We're really waiting here to kind of get more details as yet. But if this wasn't a legend attack, if this was tied to the PKK, that has very important political consequences, this group is considered a terrorist organization, both within turkey and with turkey's Western Allies across Europe and the United States, president Erdoğan has been vehemently opposed to some of the Kurdish parties, ostensibly over their links to this terrorist group, not just domestically, but also with respect to the Ascension of Sweden and to NATO, this has been his key sticking point for going along with this as Swedish Ascension is concessions from that government. Again, though, we don't know enough to really talk about this concretely. We will see as these details develop over the next hours and days. Simone, thank you very much. We'll certainly track this story from turkey and around the Middle East. Simon foxman and Doha. Quick breaking news line on Americana. This is the consumer business. I think Pizza Hut KFC, the IPO is on the way we now have a pricing that's going to be in the range. So there's dual listing between the UAE and Saudi Arabia. So the price target at 2.5 in terms of the IPO price range, it's at a 2.5 Saudi reals to 2.2 .68 Saudi Riyadh and in terms of what they hope to actually raise their raising a billion from 1.8 billion from the IPO. We had a number of 2 billion last week, so that's just a little bit less than that. We'll keep an eye on that Muhammad Ali bar, of course. Joined us last week at the launch of that prospectus. Let's get the first word headlines from around the world right here in Singapore, Juliet salis side by side with me. The move would come during a so called lame duck session of Congress with control of the house still undecided following the midterm elections. The world's biggest oil producer Saudi company Aramco has announced record profits of more than $48 billion for the second quarter of this year. Chinese customs officials have seized more than 20,000 maps due for export, which emitted Beijing's territorial claims. Chinese claims on contested islands such as the Japanese controlled sengoku were also left off. It's not known where the mats were due to be exported to, disputed territorial claims have pitted Beijing against many of its neighbors, especially in the South China Sea, where the Philippines and Vietnam are among countries deeply concerned about Chinese military activity on remote islands. In 2016, an international arbitration court in The Hague said the 9 dash line had no legal basis in a ruling Beijing doesn't recognize. "For pride. Events for LGBTQ+ communities to celebrate and to demonstrate. Lebanon has a reputation for being one of the more liberal countries in the Middle East, Beirut first held a big pride rally in 2017. This year, though, has been rockier. Today a gay rights group in Lebanon canceled a demonstration it was planning to hold outside the interior ministry. To protest against a letter from the minister instructing the security forces to prevent any gatherings that, in his words, promoted unnatural sexual acts. The LGBT group Helen said they'd postpone the event because of death threats. Khaled mehed is a Lebanese LGBTQ+ activist and lawyer. Protest has been canceled by those who are organizing it because in return, some of the radicals were going to demonstrate against them. And there's going to be violence to the NGOs that were calling for protests, canceled it to stop some bloodshed. And what about you? As for me, I'm not hiding, actually. I'm just away from home, I'm going publicly and stuff away from Tripoli because Tripoli where I live and Tripoli is where I'm receiving death threats on daily basis. Yesterday I received like 50 7, I counted them for calls and WhatsApp messages threatened me by death, cursing me because my family and the all the 9 yards. Tell me about this letter from the interior minister because there has been some speculation that the reason he's issued this instruction to the security forces to clamp down on any pride events is because there has been a speech from the mufti of the republic. Tell me about that. Yeah, it was clear. The letter signed by the ministry of interior, who is supposed to be based on laws not on demands from religious figures. It was clearly stating that based on our religious and the habits and whatnot and based on demands from the higher religious figures in Lebanon, they have to crack down on every event organized during pride regarding LGBTQ community. What do you think has prompted this though? Because there have been pride events in the past. I mean, we sort of, I was laboring under the misapprehension that this new government that had come in was going to be less sort of religiously perhaps less religiously driven than previous governments in Lebanon. The government. It's not the government. It's the minister of interior. Usually, when we have a Christian minister of interior, he'd be more flexible, more understanding. But with a Muslim, they a bit roughen up a bit. And this time, it was like the maximum the peak of being tough on cracking down on the events. Outside of pride, I mean, I realize Lebanon is not a place where you could necessarily be as open about your sexuality as some countries, for example, in the west, but compared to other Arab countries in the region. I mean, how much freedom is there? Let me tell you the LGBT society and 11 and his living like really freely. We have gay clubs. We have restaurants, coffee shops and many places where they can gather freely and safely. It's just the public events that are talking about LGBT or rooting for LGBT causes. That's when they and especially during pride, many radical groups ask for a crackdown because you know pride is a very well commercialized so it's apparent to the radicals that some events are going to happen. That's when they demand the hard enough and they demand crackdowns. Khaled may have Lebanese LGBTQ+ activist and lawyer currently not at his home address for his own safety. The Lebanese interior ministry we did try and get in touch with. They've not responded to our request for an interview

"interior ministry" Discussed on Monocle 24: The Briefing

"It is time now for a look at some of the days newspaper headlines with the journalist and broadcaster Juliet lindley, regular listeners will know that Juliet spent many years as a Vatican correspondent and she joins me now. Here in the studio in Zürich, nice to have you here, junior. Nice to have you here, Chris, it's so good to have you in Zürich. It's been a fun few days. I have to say with the Christmas market where we did a fair amount of stuff as well over the weekend and now covering the briefing as well. So yes, it's good to be here. Let's start with you are sticking Juliet with your Vatican beat to kick us off. Could the Pope beheaded to Russia? Well, there we go. He's just back from his apostolic trip to Cyrus in Greece. And on his return flight, you might remember Chris that the Pope always goes to the back of the plane where he meets the media scrum if you're on all the journalists who are covering his trip. So he boarded his flight from Athens to Rome, goes to the back of the plane and he delivered what could be a Russian Orthodox bombshell if you want in the inflate press conference. So I told journalists that he would be willing to be the first Pope in history to go to Russia since the great schism, a thousand years ago. That was in Christianity it resulted in the permanent split between the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox churches. So onboard the flight, the Pope told journalists, he'd be willing to meet the Russian Orthodox patriarch kirill in Moscow, and something it's something that is never happened. And evil and as far as to say that a top Russian Orthodox Church official is due in Rome in the next weeks for talks to decide timing and location and Chris location is actually key because one analyst I was talking to this morning, he was saying that the meeting could well take place next year. But unlikely in Moscow more likely in Kazakhstan, at the 2022 festival of religions, which was postponed this year due to the pandemic. Interesting. So you wouldn't necessarily even go to Russia itself, is that what I wanted to do? Maybe not initially. Now this would be so interesting because they only met once before patriarch kiril and the Pope, and that was in 2016. It wasn't Moscow, it was in Rome. It was in Cuba, neutral territory. And so analysts are saying it's high time for a second meeting. Let's see what happens. Let's see what happens indeed. Well, next, there is this rather strange Belarus Poland like Rao shaping up between France and Switzerland. Very strange. So we've got a report from le Parisian, and their journalists are reporting that a group of Afghan migrants who are stopped at a Paris train station said that they derive from Switzerland thanks to financial support from the Swiss authorities. So we have not corroborated this on the Swiss front, but apparently these 41 Afghans arrived by fast train teja ville to gadolin at gadolin from Zürich. And the French authorities took them in and subsequently emerged that they apparently received money from the Swiss to leave the confederation and go to France. What do you make of that Chris? Very bizarre. It is very bizarre and it's hard to imagine either would they not be caught or what would Switzerland's real motivation be as it were to do that? Right, so the journalists for the Parisians are saying that the Swiss migration authorities deny any knowledge of such a case and they maintain they have no such policy of funding migrants to move on from Swiss soil. Meanwhile, the French interior ministry says it is beefing up police checks at its train stations. Well, yeah, sad, no. And I mean, Switzerland is a member of Schengen and as we know it's located on one of the key routes, preferred by migrants who've escaped Afghanistan, passing through Austria. So I guess we need to investigate further. We will. I wonder if we're perhaps it's a private group or there was something else involved. We'll see. We'll see what comes out of that. It'd be interesting to follow. But finally, just going back to the Pope. Back to Rome, the biggest news of the Vatican's Christmas tree this year. Yes, so Christmas is coming. The goose is getting fat and in its beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Saint Peter's square. So we've got a 30 meter Christmas tree standing tall in the Piazza, and it was trucked down from trentino alto. Did you know this is a tradition started by Pope St. John Paul the second back in 1982 and every year that she has donated from a different sustainable forest and this year you'll be happy to know in true cop 26 spirit the trees illuminated by low energy consumption lights, and it's decorated with little wooden spheres. So very eco friendly. And at its feet, also by tradition, is a nativity scene again, every year, the papal crushes come from a different spot on the planet. And this year it's from the village of chapter in the Andes. Now that the chopper are a rural community speaking quechua, I didn't know this. I looked it up, and this crash marks 200 years of proven independence. Now you're going to love this, included in the nativity scene, along with baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the ox, the donkey. There are also some local Peruvian animals like alpacas, vehi that are a bit like a guanaco. This catches don't know about them and an Andean condor that I'm checking on your knowledge of Peruvian wildlife, Chris. I don't know about that. I'll have to visit to see exactly what a Peruvian Christmas looks like. Roma Christmas is always nice. Christmas is always warmer than Zürich. Absolutely. That is very true. And also, always interesting to hear the diplomatic connections that happen around Christmas in the way that the Vatican uses those. Julia, thank you very much for joining us today. Pleasure. Thank you. That was the journalist and broadcaster Juliet linney. You are listening to the briefing here on Monica 24. Next.

And president biden says it's because president trump agreed to may one deadline but the taliban violated that with an attack on forward operating base chapman in march. We were not obliged to go along with this agreement they they committed themselves to a negotiated resolution. You know from our perspective. We don't understand why the united states is not blowing up the military equipment left behind. Taliban Takes Key Northern Afghan Cities as Battles Rage On

"Taliban in Afghanistan. Say they have now captured three cities in the north of the country, and it's hard not to conclude that the fighting for control of the country is going the Taliban's way. The government has acknowledged that the city of Taloqan, capital of Takhar province, Has fallen to the militants, with sources saying some provisions. Provincial officials were still trapped. Earlier, the Taliban said they had also taken the cities of Konduz and sorry pool. But the Defense Ministry in Kabul said special forces were still inside Kunduz city taking the battle to the insurgents, and an Interior Ministry spokesman said Afghan forces were winning back control and would defeat the Taliban. No, I haven't to other ensemble. So how do you have? Well? Yeah, one. The Afghan security forces, backed by the Air Force have launched a clean up operation in Kunduz City. They have been making progress and have captured some areas of the city and the Taliban have suffered heavy casualties. The city will soon be cleared of the terrorists. Reinforcements have also been deployed in other high risk provinces, and these cities that the Taliban want to capture will soon become their graveyards Hardship. Bilal Sarwari is an independent journalist in Kabul, and he's been telling me about today's developments on the ground. Well, we know that there's very heavy fighting inside the city of Kunduz, with the Taliban, managing to seize control of the provincial governor's office, as well as the police headquarters in the center of the city. But we've also seen you know very heavy fighting between Afghan special forces commandos in the Taliban. One Kunduz resident told me that there was a rain of bullets and shrapnel that hit homes. People simply could not basically even venture out of their living rooms, let alone seeing the street. We know that most of the districts in Kunduz province did fall to the Taliban a few weeks ago, even a month or so ago without much of a fight, So the city of Kunduz was always besieged. The Taliban were always at the four gates of the

"Or reading or listening to or what have you can pick their brains every week. Pop chat is a brand new podcast but does exactly that and feels like spending time with your best friends. So join me alouine mood. And a panel of the smartest culture. Critics that i know as we dissect the discourse but also have a great time doing it. Tunisia's democracy is on a knife's edge last week the country's president sade suspended parliament stripped. Mp's of their official roles fired the prime minister and announced he was taking over all three branches of the government which includes the judiciary that move came. After days of violent anti-government protests over corruption and the poor handling of the pandemic with no clear path toward a new government critics are accusing the president of stages staging a coup been. Barak is a tunisian reporter for the independent new site. Musicale meese cal and we reached her in the country's capital tunis guy. How is the president able to seize so much power in tunisia with the stroke of a pen. Well for announced on july twenty fifth that he would be acting upon article eighty of the constitution and what he did basically was act. Bond the article that says if the country is in grave danger is allowed to take exceptional measures the exceptional measures that he has taken laws too on fire. The prime minister freeze The work of the parliament to end. Lift parliamentary immunity off Some of the. Mp's this actually came. After popular protests that took place on july twenty fifth which coincides would be sixty four th anniversary of the announcement of the republic and also the eighth anniversary of the assassination of opposition leader. Muhammad me lots of people took to the streets demanding the president to actually solve the parliament. Fire the government and gets rid of another and this popular demand has been actually equal for in the country for months after really degradation in this situation and the lives of tunisians so popular publicly but league legally. Does the president have the authority to do all of this now. This has been a question of a lot of debate in tunisia. Some people say of course he has right. He acted in the right way. And these are within the exceptional measures to him by the constitution. Act one our countries facing pretty dangerous crisis but some other experts constitutional law professors even sides. Professors has Describe this as unconstitutional and illegal to take place because the constitution is only plausible for reputation when the text is silent but there are some paragraphs of the constitution for example that says the parliament even when the country is in case of a grave danger. The farmers can hold its sessions even outside the building of the parliament. Or even outside the capital tunis. By what side did was freeze. The parliament and some people said that he does not have any right to do that. So it's a question i would say. It's a question of debate. That people have not been any conclusive opinion about it so far even constitutional experts. So you sort of hinted at this spoke of this earlier but what is sort of the reaction been of the everyday people living here the majority. I'll say the great majority have been very happy with the decisions. They can buy the president because they've been feeling frustrated for the past. Ten years of the ruling of the major main islam's party another party and some of it. Some allies people have called for the president. Actually take even more serious measures. Some people have told me during my reporting that this actually was a bit late. But they're glad that the side had finally had the guts to do it and Like the the the main reason behind this is because people have been very frustrated with how the governments have been dealing with the overnighting crisis and also of how we're seeing dysfunctional parliament and the parliament. Really not doing its work. So that's one of the reasons that people have been like celebrating since like july twenty fifth on the night side now the decisions there is some skepticism among some people. People have been also telling me that they will not giving like blanchette decide like they agree with what he did whether it's constitutional or not but they will be keeping tracks of his actions and today. We're still waiting every day for the next step you will be taken is it. The previous government's handling of cova. That really left it so unpopular or is there much more to this. why was the previous government so unpopular. There's definitely more to it than just like the mishandling of the covert nineteen. of course. it is obvious that the government and previous government was responsible for more than twenty thousand. Two niching deaths But besides that we have been also seeing since last january. Lots of protests on the streets on the streets calling for social justice with seen also lots of crimes committed by beliefs. Recently we had this one young man that was killed by the police in one popular working class neighborhoods This was one of the reasons. Because prime minister she she was also the acting. Interior ministry so using chartered security forces and he never liked apologize. Any instance for those crimes of that were well documented by the press and by civil society and human rights defenders. So all of these came to a bali point where people went out to the street and kept asking for this government to resign for the prime minister to resign so moving forward. We're hearing from some. Mp's who who are frustrated and they're calling this a constitutional coup house. The president responding to this the president has been very obvious. I'm very Really strict diet constrict with the point. He does not see Anything that he needs that. He has taken as unconstitutional and illegal He believes that what he did is what article eighteen thousand fighters him to do. And he said this one centers they said if like you do not you have not like taken a closer look at the article. You should probably review your lessons and your law lessons because the president is originally a constitutional law professor and he is a complete outsider of politics so he has said this in multiple occasions that he believes that physicians are within the spirit of the constitution. What reforms is the president promising at this point at this point the president hasn't actually announced any roadmap which actually lots of civil society we're gonna have been asking him to do. He has not is also yet to announce a prime minister to for the government. But from what we have seen is that the president have been Trying to follow on people and that people and of course the political class that have eruption linked to their Names We've seen for example meet with the president of the private sector private sector chamber of commerce. The person responsible for it Meeting him and showing him like files of corrupt businessmen. And but what i would say about the decisions in the measure that he will be taken a day to day thing and like wait and see things so we're just waiting for him Racing to see his decisions on the basis but the main thing that unusual have been demanding At least the political class society condition is for him to make roadmap announce it as soon as possible. And it's been ten days and he has not enough that yet guy at. We'll continue to follow this. Thank you very much for your time today. Thank you so much thank you been. Botic is a tennessean reporter for the independent new site. Miskel we reached her.

"Armstrong and getty show opening ceremony of the olympics has already happened. I'm going to watch tonight with the kids. Always kinda fun to third. How many countries on earth thirty did somebody just. Here's a one one hand. What did you make that up. Two hundred thirty two or something like that. But i don't know how many participate in the olympics. A hell of a lot a lot of countries. I've never heard of. it's always. yeah it is always fun. Honestly athletes table tennis player in a arowar and they'll both get knocked out in the first round but the home folks get excited and that's nice so the state department announced the administration announced harsh new sanctions against cuba for press in their their people in the rest of it in a lot of it's fake is you're about to hear. I just thought this was such good old school reporting. You're never gonna see any of this in the mainstream media because it's not you know trump fighting with excuse me and it's not Covert related trying to scare you but this is an old school. Ap reporter joining with the state department spokesman clip sixteen. The special of the interior ministry was already covered by global magnitsky sanctions. So you've added another designation. I just i whatever the impact would have been. It seems to be negligible since they already covered. So i don't quite understand how it is that you're presenting lists of some brand new you know Initiative to support the cuban people when in fact It simply adding another layer. Which was really unnecessary. Since they already work. But i i would make a couple points number one. The global Magnitsky sanctions regime is an important tool We have that as applicable. That is that is Olvera lopez was bej. One person okay. Who most likely doesn't have any assets just dealing just just just. Let's talk about what the real impact would be would be if you designated the whole. Ntt of the interior of a part of the interior ministry like with The iran sanctions. Okay that would have a much bigger impact. Whatever that impact would be but the fact of the matter is that they were already covered by global magnitsky sections the exact same sanctioned. The exact same executive order was used to do this. And that doesn't having doesn't do anything. New middle aged guy could have been a woman knows his beat knows his topic asking hard questions of the government on the record not a twenty four year old cranking out click bait. I just loved that. I know it's dry. But i just loved. It happened more often and asking the obvious questions. Well and it's so. Maybe i'm naive but it's so troubling to me. Why government feels like it ashkali all the time. Why don't you just say our options are very limited. We already have sanctions on much of the leadership. It's in the hands of the cuban people we stand by. We'll help them financially. We're trying to get them internet. But there's really not much. We can do to the cuban leadership at this point would the cuban-americans go crazy in the streets miami. I don't know but why the dishonesty all the time. yeah Back to back to the olympics briefly. As just reading about this. Because i didn't watch the opening ceremony and watch tonight as i mentioned but So it was really quiet. Because there's nobody in the stands and nbc went with the idea of instead of pumping and fake crowd noise. Which was one option. We know how that worked for the nfl. Men ba work. Pretty well okay. Instead of pumping fake crowd noise they went. They had microphones down. Close to where you could actually hear the athletes talking as they came in and stuff like i have no idea how entertaining that ends up being but you could hear some of the protests and the the blurring horns and everything from outside the stadium at various times lots of protests as a recent poll shows eighty three percent of japanese sadie olympic. Should've been postponed or cancelled so just about half three percent so practically everybody in the country doesn't think it should be happening. That's a weird situation. Yeah i'd say so. I hope they don't take it out on any of the athletes or anybody so on. They'd probably won't so. I'm guessing you won't have a lot of the puff pieces that you usually have during an olympics where they give you like a taste of the home country right and you go to a local local bakery all these different sorts of things if everybody's one it's closed down because they're hitting getting hit hardest with the covert that they have since the whole thing started and a very few people are vaccinated and two. They don't want the olympics there at all. So i don't know if there's gonna be a lot of the home country puff pieces you used to seeing in the olympics which is fine with me by the way yeah probably just more sports which is great least likely to watch events according to a poll easily events. We don't wanna watch apparently water-polo i'd watch water polo but i've never sought it out field hockey. I'm not sure that is Judo ping pong sailing. I didn't know was an olympic event. Rugby how good. I've watched tried to watch a sailing but i can never figure out who's leading or where they turn or whatever. Rugby seems like a sport. We should be good at the united states but we must not have a good team. I have a feeling if we're really good at it. You'd be hearing about us winning medals and stuff like that. Our guys would be great. Rob rugby players play football. Good point canoeing is a olympic sport. That people don't watch as his badminton. Pacman canoeing experience once. Judy and i are three kids.
