"So it provides a lot of research and information that local policymakers can use to shift the orientational of their economic development and workforce development strategies economic development has always been obsessed with industries, and for good reason industries need different things to grow some industries need to be close to lots of universities, where smart. People are coming up with the best ideas, other industries need to be located next to their suppliers and still other industries need to be located close to consumers. And so you cannot make development has always kind of had this industrial lands that acknowledged that different industries different things. What we wanted to add to that conversation, though, was this prism of job quality, which industries provide lots of good, promising jobs, for what types of individuals. And so we've given these policymaker. Economic developers and their corollaries, and we're force development organizations, this new information to kind of understand and judge, which industries are going to be better for which types of people from, you know, kind of materialistic or from a job, quality perspective. So while working on this analysis at national level, you also spent significant time digging into these trends, and dynamics in the inland empire specifically, what did that reveal the inland empire was a really attractive place to do this work because one relievers there, that would were poised to dig into this kind of research, but to because the dynamics of that place we're talking about a region that is rather poor. It's been growing really fast, but it is not a prosperous place by many measures. And so, you know there's a lot of momentum there behind the economy and its growth. But momentum that's not pushing in a direction that's good for more people. And so we thought this was an ideal place to kind of pilot this analysis. And work with those local leaders who were very keen to put together new strategies and policies that would help more people. And what were some of the really interesting or compelling findings that you uncovered as you dug into all of that data? So what's really interesting about what we found in the inland empire is that this is a region that actually has a lot of good jobs and a lot of promising jobs for suback Lorette workers, the challenge that we found there is that to spite the large number of good and promising jobs in the region. There aren't nearly enough for all of the struggling workers need them. This is a region where quite considerable number of workers people and families struggle to make ends meet each month. And many, many of them would need to get good jobs in order to get this region to a level of prosperity, that's similar to the rest of the national economy at the same time despite this deficit. We also found that there's a lot of promise here that the region does have a lot of Ican. Momentum behind it and has a lot of very earnest and committed leaders, and that those leaders have strategies available to them that could really start to move the dial on job quality in the region. What could these strategies for supporting good and promising jobs? Look like in April the inland economic growth and opportunity campaign released a report outlining, how it plans to grow. These middle-class jobs, applying Brookings findings to action..

"That you're like why would they do that or not do that you know in retrospect of to say yes you know in encounter case kind of going back to the fact that he he really was hamstrung in terms of investigating the witnesses i think that what his defense really lacked and his defense attorney really couldn't marshall was a thorough investigation of the night of the crime you know and maybe he should have done that i mean there was no protective order on the crime scene or on the neighbors because this murder happens on a crowded street it's like six yards from the corner on blood is a local newspaper this this intersection where there are a lot of murders it's an open air drug market it's evening a nice day so there are lots of people around so the thing that really never happened was a very thorough canvassing of of the scene and what happens twenty years later when cao finally gets an appeal and his day in court is that you have people who weren't after seeing two decades earlier who now come forward and testify and so is that at the foot of the defense attorney maybe but but i think the point here is that you know the evidence was was always there to got what made it not be gotten you know you can go back and forth on that but i i mean i think one of the tragedies in cases like this is that the ultimate result was always there to be to be found and it just took two three decades now robby you've spent many many years i'm not gonna use the term monday morning quarterbacking challenging the.

"Come together and basically say this can't be true it can't be true because somebody doesn't confessed to murder just raise their hand and say hey i did it you know take me away and second of all because you know count the bad guy we've proven this so we're we're really not going to take seriously and in fact what you what you see is it i mean it's in the podcast the detective goes to named from their friends because he happens to be getting confessions so frank goes to the person who can fast and says you know that's a stupid idea you didn't really do these murders did you now i mean i'm paraphrasing it's more elaborate and father frank prince the guy's mother in there's all kinds of you know it's an emotionally fraught situation but it is pretty interesting that despite what you would say would be obvious evidence worth pursuing the criminal justice system looks at these things through a set of is that come with preconceived ideas and and i think they're very difficult to overcome for the justice system they are except for that one amazing moment in your podcast where the prosecutor at the hearing tries to paint cal as this dangerous criminal because he's the drugs in the wishing war on drugs language and was somebody says her what this isn't like the nineteen nineties like what are you talking about a rare insight and he's kinds of procedures i was really impressed by that that was the defense attorney he was very very good on his feet.

"It was actually the defendant who was suggesting that the that the doctrine of chances applied this is cow and he spent basically his entire adult life claiming that his former protege dwight with actually the killer and the reason he puts forth or one of the reasons that he's put forth this that two years after the murder in question after the murder for which callen to prison two years later there was another murder committed in almost the exact same way and dwight was convicted of that murder counts contention is you know lightning doesn't strike twice and sit up and take notice right right and this is what me and the evidence field reverse for a four be evidence of four four oh four b is the rule that allows for at come in under mo or niche chances and then reverse for four bs exactly like in cows case where you say i was convicted of something there was a very similar crime we can prove who committed that crime and that means it's like they committed this crime as well and so it was really interesting to hear how that played into callus case didn't play into counts case and you know that was one of the extraordinarily press things for cal is that he could never get any traction because the system you know like banality it doesn't want to look at it self and it certainly doesn't wanna reversed itself so extreme example of this in cows case there's actually somebody who confesses to the murder for which callen to prison he contestants ten years after cal goes to to prison for it and and yet you see the the kind of momentum rally and and impulses the justice system.

"Think about it i mean she's clearly portrayed as this gold digging black widow who marries men for their money and then kills them in cold blood and it's just so far apart from the actual facts in this case and how everyone i've talked to speaks about pam lanier in this relationship and certainly anyone coming into this case having watched the video is going to have preconceived notions and that's again as we touched upon a bitney episode is made a lot of people i talked to gun shy at first they don't wanna talk me because they have seen what happens with this episode and see the impact its head on people both in the community and online when they're talking about pam in our case now robbie at you were colored your perception of the case was color a little bit when you watch the episode right oh not a little bit completely i watched that and colin has been producing an investigation i watch that we're doing this doing with the case it's really it's so troubling how coverage like that can just really impact on people and completely completely distract from an not even be based on facts i mean i was troubled by it i want it but i thought there's no way collins invest us a case where like there's not some real evidence this woman is innocent so but yeah there are things about that video that and i was telling call and later that you know even now when we talk about the facts of the case even though i know they're really very different than what was portrayed it is hard for me to get the those images out of my head right when i think about janis drowning i still see the clip in my head from that video.

"Well i think that that the real thing the leap you have to take you have to make yourself identify those world brown they're built in limits racial and ethnic in age and all those but the the kind of act of it the effort of it i think it pays off and so i have a real relationship with cow and callan i you know we laughed together chat kinda ridiculously about trade remedies for cold in count tell me how he makes a concoction the jurors of colds imprinting so you know there's this kind of relationship that goes from the very casual to the very intense 'cause i i mean out without kind of creating too many spoilers there's this moment that cal gets his huge break he's been in prison fifteen years and he finally lines up an attorney and it's not just any attorney for guiding myron bell dot who really was responsible for freeing hurricane carter after he was convicted triple murder and this guy he really almost literally comes up deathbed he's eighty eighty eighty five years old he's got heart problems he's got cancer and basically says you know counts going to be my last crusade right and this guy has you know he has the tools and the heft and the reputation to do it and he doesn't make he writes the appeal but he doesn't make it to the finish line and because of my relationship with cao cao calls me use the rumor of this and said is it true that marin pants so you know i was the one who told him that now you know for the for the storytelling in the pump kissed i think yeah that's a key moment but it's also like this this moment in relationship where i think you do get to hear that they're things sharing there is an emotional connection and you know i don't want to over emphasize that our lives could not be more different.

"Said was i didn't say no i said you know count send me the transcripts and and that really was the moment the changed me that made me open to this case i mean eleven hundred pages you guys have read them i mean tramps skips there can be santana stick reading i mean they're drama of players and tile lodge and as this i'm starting to think wait this is justice i mean perhaps perhaps i was naive but just to to examples of kind of what was revealed to me in that transcript the first is and listen everybody knows that that people get deals for testifying for the state but here you have four of counts previous associates i should mention cow was an admitted crack dealer four of his previous drug is so see it's all facing criminal charges walk in the prosecutor says no jail time just say what we need you to say now one of those guys is actually in prison and the prosecution using its it's long arm manages to expedite his release from prison i mean that's the kind of thing that i think to average person will we'll see unfair understand the prosecution will tell you all the reasons for it but that was the first thing and the second thing was that the prosecutor declared in advance that cow the defendant was so dangerous that the prosecution needed in order of protection for its witness and now that meant that the defense cows attorney could not know the names not even the names of any of the people who would testify against him until they walked to the witness stand now i you know i don't really think it needs a legal expert to feel like.

"About it and gave it four thumbs up on the crime writers on podcast we really enjoyed it what can you tell us about your podcast and the case inside of it the calvin bori case well maybe the place to start is where i began which was with phone call seven years ago one i was not looking forward to or or expecting to change my life but but did on the other end was a guy named calvin bawara calling collect from a new york state correctional institution and rebecca as you mentioned i covered long convictions i'd covered crime so you know from time to time i would inmates would reach out to me with claims of innocence and you know they'd be sick envelopes documents and and you know you guys all now it's it's extremely complicated extremely time consuming and i had other things i felt i needed to do and and it's my my friend email former convict who was actually exonerated told me you know everybody in prison his innocence so i guess i justified my my action that way or my lack of action but with cow calvin bwari called me there was there was actually something different first of all email who i just mentioned had vowed for him he thought that cow was innocent of this double homicide which had been committed when i spoke to him a decade and a half earlier and so count starts racing through the evidence of his innocence and and you know he's known this casey inside it's very difficult to follow but there's something for me extraordinarily compelling in his his voice and you know i i suppose i can't explain it but i had this image of this guy standing it a prison payphone and and trying to run a campaign for his freedom and and to me that was quite moving and then the the next thing that happened is i said count you know and you guys done this but i mean i didn't think yes what i what i.

"To the united inland empire radio program the radio show for the most important political political office that of private citizens easy for me to say we are having a conversation right now with someone who takes that role very seriously after serving his country for twenty one years in the marines he focused rather than national security on border security which is a form of national security when you come right down to it given what can happen at the border jeff chak he is the founder of san diego i secure borders took the opportunity of donald trump coming out to inspect the six prototypes that had been built that they pretty close to the san ysidro crossing to organize a rally and a rally in support of donald trump in support of secure borders insecure in support of a fence and funding for offense and you attracted jeff who is with us here on the show a large group of patriots who attended but also a large group of folks running for office throughout the state tell us a little bit about the organism you didn't have much lead time to organize this and yet you seem to have gotten a tremendous amount of attention and participation yeah we did but it's all it's all the president trump i mean if we just organized on rally i mean you know you get a few people show up are quite a few but nothing like this people just wanted they knew they were going to all the eyes of the nation was going to be on san diego tuesday morning and everybody we had people just contacting us we're out of state and they said i feel like i need to be there what are you guys doing alert i need to be what time so it just kind of almost a field of dreams thing dilbert and they will come and i've never seen any kind of response for any kind of event or rally like we did for this it just like giving candy to children they just couldn't get enough they wanted a chance to be part of that action be one more number in.
