They Call Us Sujata Day
"Hello and welcome to another edition of they call Bruce An unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asia America I'm Phil You Jeff Yang, and we have a fantastic guests this episode somebody who wanted to have on for a while somebody loves and whose work Meyer and that is Giada Day. Actor filmmaker and the creator of a new film definition please which were incredibly excited to be talking about now Sujata welcome to the episode. Thank you for having me. Welcome. It's a power to Sunday night party. Suggest a day. You get that all the time. Oh yes. Nothing. Nothing like being agent and you know leaning into the name things because we get that. But SUJATA. Again, we have kind of all known each other ish like we've been in the same circles for a while and obviously been admirers of the stuff even doing since way back you know awkward black girl and of course you're working insecure. But this is a new thing right? Like a feature film and it's a feature film that seems. Very much rooted in your reality if you will. Since you wrote it and directed it and are starring in it. Yeah I Have you know done? Awkward Black Run I was on insecure and? Watching East race journey from the very beginning of you know s meeting on twitter and then going to her dad's doctor's office in Inglewood to shoot a twenty minute. Seen me walking out of there being like what the heck did. I get myself into. And watching her put awkward black girl on her credit cards and then US getting picked up by Ferrall for the second season and then HBO for insecure and. That entire journey alongside ISA. was such a huge learning experience for me which. All, culminated in the creation of definition please and me having the confidence to write the script and produce it and directed and starring it is all. Just snow grateful to have been part of ISA's. Happen in that gave me the confidence to embark on my own feature film and just get right into it and do it and. So I'm just so thankful that people are watching it now and enjoying it and. Sending me responses to the trailer and the film if they're watching it festivals. And it's just been really exciting to watch and. Also the it's not an autobiographical film, but it is really personal to me like all of my projects I start from a real place. So it'll be like a real person or a real situation that I was in, and then I will fictional is it from there so for example, this script started with me winning my spelling bee in fourth grade I don't know if you guys have been in spelling bees. Not Personally I I'm actually quite a good speller. Ford is worth. Much better that than like mass, for instance. But I've never competed and I'm sure you would crush me even at your fourth grade level. No I don't think you know what it's. It's probably because you were you always an avid reader. I was I was A. Kid, who kind of snuck books? Under the covers at night right and stayed up reading. Yeah. Yeah. Me Too and and I never trained for spelling bees and my parents never pushed me to do. I don't even think they were aware that spelling bees were a thing and in my tiny class of ten people in Fourth Grade One my spelling the which you know when you win out of ten people at doesn't feel like a huge win. But but it felt like a big deal everyone was proud. My teachers were proud of me. Mrs Lewis you know she took me to regionals. and. Once I went to regionals. It was just a whole other experience because there was a huge stage and it wasn't in the cafeteria anymore and there was a microphone and there was an audience and I think I got really nervous and I went out. On the first round and I misspelled radish. And I spelled it with two DS instead of one, and then I came down and Mrs Lewis Hugged me and I could tell that she knew that I was I was nervous and disappointed in myself but she was so comforting and I went back to my school and my friends just started. Me and making. Because I missed our such easy easy word. And and you know what I accepted the you know I accepted the bowling for that because I was like you know what? It wasn't easy word and and I should've gone out on a hard word.

"It'll be at the same time though, we live in a gigantic area, obviously. And you know, there's only a portion of those people who follow the clippers and even smaller portion who followed the clippers and read the LA times. And I'm sure that'll be something that if and when this gets to trial jurors will be quizzed about you seem to have a little giddy up with you today. It seems like your juices are phone like you're into this story. You know, we are we love digging into stuff, and ultimately these projects impact communities and being able to let the community know more about what happened and they can draw their own conclusions. That's not our business. But it's being able to let people know what was going on behind the scenes, you know, there was a meeting at a Ritz Carlton in marina del Rey that back in two thousand sixteen between the mayor and St. bomber. And some of his associates, really. Helped kick this off. It's important to let people know how these things came about. They can draw their own conclusions make their own judgments, but we want to provide that information for them. What has been the reaction from people in the community to the story. You know, there hasn't been a whole lot of reaction. Actually, there's people's positions on the Serena seemed to be pretty clearly staked out. There's some people who support it. That's the people who don't. And then some people probably the largest group is trying to go about their lives, and, you know, make ends meet and pay rent and that kind of thing. So it goes back to the Eleanor problems where if you're a resident of Inglewood just brings something here that can generate some income generate jobs, but if you're MSG you feel like you were misled, and if you're the clippers trying to build something new it's going to get seems like, yeah, definitely. And I think it can be hard for your average Joe to relate to a an arena that could cost, you know, who knows maybe a billion dollars something like that that seems very abstract or it could seem very abstract. But when you're talking about how's that going to impact traffic on my street, or what's that going to do to my rent Bill? Or maybe that provide a job opportunity for me. Then it becomes a little more real. I know how to answer this question, but win could we possibly get an answer? What's going on here? Boy that is you know, the answer to that. I got asked it. I gotta enterprise reporter like you. Yeah. You can find court documents. I mean, look at the end of the day, it's tough to bet against somebody. You know, like St. bomber with forty two billion dollars who's very motivated to have an arena of his own at the same time, though, we'd have MSG that has an immense amount of money and power in love it self. You know, if that goes to trial that's going to be quite a brawl that you're reported on this. So what has been some of the reaction from the parties involve say who have anybody reach downs at? Hey, let me tell you different side of the story. You know, I think the parties involved they all are familiar with all these documents. And I think it's important to point out that the documents we looked at a tiny fraction of the amount of documents that have actually been produced by all the parties in the course of this litigation. There is a lot more out there. So I look forward to. Read them. Are they mad at you? People are always Madison. The clippers. Why would they want to move? So, you know, people who are very familiar with LA sports scene will know this. But you know, for those who aren't familiar with it, the clippers share staple center with the kings and the Lakers, of course, and they get the third choice of dates in the Serena and Steve Balmer since he purchased the team I spent two billion dollars for it. He wants them to have a home of their own identity of their own and not be a third wheel. Again, if you forty two billion dollars, that's a pretty reasonable thing to want. Never a dull moment in the LA sport chain specifically in the basketball, the Lakers one way the clippers which freeway they'd be using to get to their games..

"But how the clippers came to settle on Englewood has been more of a question. What happened behind the scenes and while they're building the new football stadium. Yeah. Right. And kind of make sense if you're gonna football stadium kind of have the entertainment area around there, you see a lot of metropolitan cities. Yeah. And that would really create this sort of critical mass for the region of two NFL teams there then fell network moving to the development around the football stadium. You put a. There at NBA arena with the team there. I mean, and then you have the forum nearby as well. It's a terrific concert venue. You really cooking then. So what's the problem? The problem is with the form. So the folks who owned the forum Madison Square Garden company, the New York based company they on the Knicks and the Rangers and at Tanah stuff the powerful their giant. They of course owned the form, and they were not happy that the clippers are pursuing an arena nigga would they alleged that the mayor had tricked them and to Seraing a lease for the land where the clippers wanna build the Serena the mayor denies this. But it's kicked off because if the clippers move now the forum loses concerts to the new battery. Yeah. Okay. Because you got to fill those empty dates. It's basketball team only takes up fifty dates year something like that that leaves three hundred ten some odd days, you gotta fill up or at least try to fill the forms. I know don't come here because we don't wanna lose our tenants. So after this project was announced in June. Twenty seventeen it ended up just kicking off a nasty nasty legal fight between the city of Englewood, Madison Square Garden and the clippers. There are a tunnel lawyers involved more than I can count. And as part of this people been deposed, there've been a lot of emails turned over during discovery all this kind of stuff that goes on with lawyers. You're just going toe to toe and brawl on it out usually doesn't involve companies powerful and as recognizable as Madison Square Garden, the clippers. And then you have the city that's on the cusp of a real transformation in Inglewood. But as part of that there was a filing in LA superior court in January of about eleven hundred pages of emails and other documents. They were supposed to be filed under seal that means that folks like you, and I can't see him unless you the lawyer judge in the case nobody else can see him. So they're supposed to be filed onto seal. They weren't why. Somebody just messed up somebody just messed up that simple. Like, I'm not a lawyer pretending play one. I have lawyer friends. So it's. Really simple. Yeah. So these documents were available for about a week anybody could download them and being a good reporter. I did. So and disappeared from the did, you know, or how did, you know? I mean, I think your sources, but what made you think that there's something there? I checked court filings every day. Oh, yeah. It's the part of the job, and I'm kind of the obsessive type. So there's a number of cases, we keep is on. That's one of anybody can do this your central computer and yellow through LA county superior court, and you see this and you see the name clippers. There's a few different cases related to the spat over the arena. And I check those those are among those. I check every day and night gender every scrap of paper because you never know when you're going to get Ted bit. That's going to lead. You a interesting story or help to increase our understanding and Morton community's understanding of what's really going on. So were you working on a previous story? Yeah. I've been following this and reporting on it from the get-go, and it's a fascinating situation because you add the Serena right across the street from the football stadium. And again, you're talking about entertainment destination that is maybe unrivalled. I mean, it's a. Big ill. We'll get this. Right. Somebody's supposed to put this under seal. So you may than fennel finale times, it doesn't see it. They don't do it this pops up and you start reading it. And what do you discover it's a gold mine of information. But it's information that had been turned over during the discovery process, and it primarily consisted of emails to or from one of the clippers minority owners guy named Dennis Wong who turned out was a college roommate of St..

"Everybody has an opinion on the Lakers. Good bad. Doesn't matter. They win championships. They moved the needle in the city. And right now, the Lakers are trending something looks like they would not make the playoffs with LeBron James on their team like to say that the Lakers all I could tell it Nobel. There's always something with them time. They can do covers the Lakers. She will give us the pulse of the team looks like the season might be short less. Nathan feno our enterprise reporter stops by the clippers are talking about. Maybe moving Inglewood building, a new arena, nobody uncover some court documents. That are very interesting. He'll give us the latest on that NBA drama in LA. I'm your host the DRAM. It's the arrive early legally podcast. It's Wednesday March sixth. Before we get to the Lakers tundra. How are you feeling? It's March the season up down sideways travel gossip nobody asked how the reporter show, and I do how are you doing you care? I do care. I'm fine. It's going to be I think it's going to be a shorter Lakers season than I expected when this all began. So we had the all star break they've been they've been struggling a little bit a little bit. Yeah. We've had. I mean, the nice thing about what we're doing. Now as paper is that we have so many people on the NBA now that I do get breaks. So BT was nice enough. He went to New Orleans and Memphis, all those two Lakers losses. And then I'm in a pick them up for the rest of the year. But yeah, I'm good. Okay. So they want to three Cancun for you. You're ready to go. It's not for me. That was you know, what's funny? My first year that I covered the finals for the paper. The Cavs were about to get swept by the warriors. It seems like the Lakers are not going to be making the playoffs. You just said in the beginning that it looks like you expect this. I'll anybody expect everybody said LeBron signs up you'll at least get to the first round what has happened to this team. There's been just so many things happening. I mean, it's a combination of the injury to LeBron. The Brian was out seventeen gains. And then missed another one that has been a problem for them. Lonzo ball has been out. That's been a problem for them. It had all these different lineups because of the injuries, and they've not been able to find any consistency. Then you have some of the issues that came up with the trade deadline, and they can say all they want that like they just have to get over it. Magic johnson. Went to Philly talk to the guys told them that this is a business. Now you've seen that. It's a business time to move on and make go make the playoffs, but there's a human element to it and their chemistry for whatever reason. It might not be the trade deadline. There might be something else. Going on for whatever reason their chemistry is clearly not there. It's much easier to have chemistry on offense and defense. And right now, they're defense has been so bad. Rondos a player who found him very interesting from when he was with the Celtics and covered in the playoffs. Then he seems like he gets it. And now when his here with the Lakers, he understands his role to an extent, but you sat down with him for fifteen twenty minutes recently. I sat down with him at a point in the season right before the all star break and.

Oh, now. I mean, they were destroying the old Hollywood Mark form, of course, is what right? Just to the east of mistake and and then I also went down to the Carson site. Did you ever do you ever hang out and Carson much growing. So I go down to Carson and the security guy, and I was meeting with the mayor of Carson who's going to give me a tour of the supposed raiders chargers site. And I said to the security guy to let us in and it's a landfill as you may know or may not know. I don't know since he didn't spend much time in Carson and I said, yeah, I'm here to to check out the stadium site and the guy stadium site. It's not build a stadium here is this is a landfill and I go, this is where supposedly buildings fade him. So then I drive down to San Diego from there. And I meet with the mayor of San Diego and he's getting miked up, and he goes, powers l. a. and I go, good. I said, the Carson things seems to me like it's not real and he's just such as he goes, I trust your instinct on that one. So my whole point and telling the story is from the get-go, I believe it was going to be the Rams going to Inglewood possibly with the chargers. And Carson was a bluff the entire time throw us off the travel off. Yes. I know it's a weird thing to be a loss Angeles native and being Saint Louis and talk about.
