"The whole street in the process loughgall was very surgical and what was going on and achieved a lot and you started to pick away at the decision making on the confidence that they had in their own abilities by charging the weapons by arresting them. We're going in bhai interdicting operations before they happen by arresting people as were coming out of operations where the ball modern going off and they didn't know where the information was coming from. So that gov to the communist point did we take that forward ghanistan could the the early days of coniston into benign environment. Well on there was a lot of good hearts and minds work going on art into the different villages getting an understanding of what happened and that was before iraq happened and then all of sudden iraq happens. We get distracted and taken off to iraq but afghanistan is still brewing in the background and there is a point on a domain when when the point was but there's a point when an afghanistan things went from the early days hearts and minds and doing good stuff that sort of stuff of the british Really good out on the on the on the ground in different operational theatres to turning into more of a fight against the taliban sex was nothing. That was yeah so sex when we went in i. And if you look at what happened in here. I'm going to be slightly disingenuous. I be out. Maybe maybe just the mindset changed. Well i'm going to say it doesn't necessarily to certain commanders doing it in a very generic way not putting the blame in any individual or anything else but if you look at the destruction that there is in the military and you look at the pressures that are on so we've got we've gone from a benign another operational conflict warfighting action still going on iraq. We're going back to something that had started off with the balkans heart minds turning into something. That's a bit more connecticut. So you're the first commodity officer of the infantry battalion on the ground workers goes kinetic has to deal with this change that's happening and deals with it. Very effectively and a good terms takes the fight an appropriate way back to the enemy and containing it as much as possible whilst come up with a plan as to you what you need to do to try and interdict it at the tactical level first commanding officer. "Faith is an important component for those who were serving in the military And we'll get to some more of how you're doing that specifically but this is something we discuss a lot but from your perspective as a chaplain as someone who has a cross on his collar and is the designated religious person in the unit. And you're the guy that people are supposed to go to I it seems like there would be some. I don't know exactly what the word is. But but you're kind of the guy that people go to and they need to talk to someone and and for you as someone who believes that faith is extremely important. It's it's not a religious exercise. It's not something that you just encounter when you're having a hard time How do you communicate to the people that you're working with? That faith should be the foundation. That faith should be kind of that through thread that thing that carries through your life regardless of where you are. How do you as kind of the professional quote unquote communicate that to the men and women that you're serving rate question? Jeremy I think a lot of folks struggle with that not just chaplains. 'cause you're right when you put the quotes around professional. There's none of us. That are professionals. Were not really not called to ministry when we get a paycheck or a title were called to ministry when we come to Christ or when we're called Christ regardless of who you are whether you're ten or you're eighty faster not right so I think disagree question for all of us for for me particular. I mean it's just a matter of of saying it. Many question might be will how in that differs for every person in every conversation about win Nicodemus came to Jesus right at night and he comes in he asks. These questions is very key. Core questions about faith and Jesus says to him well you have to be born of water and spirit in the condemn. What does that even mean? And he's like well you got to be born again. And now you and I have used and have heard that phrase so many thousands of times that it seems comments but at that time. I'm not sure anybody had ever used that phrase born again. The so again Nicodemus is sort of like what are you talking about my paraphrase. Obviously not his actual words in John. Three but my point is just to say even Jesus himself he could have very easily laid it all out there at that moment right it could have said okay. We'll look here. You're affair senior. You're you're you're part of this council. Is this religious group of folk. Who should know all of this stuff all be scriptures so let me just lay out for your really clear? Here's what the Prophet said. Here's what they meant. Here's who I am God in Human Flesh and I'm Oh by the way I'm GonNa die when I die on a cross. It's it's not just the physical death in some way that you may not be able to understand the your son is going to be put on my body on my person and I'm GonNa pay for that dislike is if I could replace you on death. Row that's what I'm GonNa do any questions. He doesn't do that. He goes all you got to be born again. My point is just to say. I think you have to be sensitive to watch who you're talking to. What the timing is and how to present the message in a lot of. That's being prayerful and a lot of that is making sure to that. You take time to build relationships with people there's the old adage. I'm sure you've heard in maybe us. People don't know don't care how much you know until they know how much you care at especially true a lot of the folks that we work with have heard about Jesus. They've heard about God and because I wear a cross on my caller or depending on what uniform I'm wearing it might be here. People almost expect that of me what they really want to know. I is are you willing to listen. Do you want to know me or as chaplain as a professional? Are you looking to put another notch in your staff that you walk around with the metaphorical Shepherd's Crook or whatever but there? There's certainly there's times where it's very deliberate very overt. And there's other times where it's it gets weaved into the story and at some point. I'll tell you this though. I personally I always get to a point where I just let them know in some way if you want help. I'm GonNa do the best. I can to help you but I'm just gonNa tell you right now that you have a much higher chance of success with God fighting near corner than do this alone and furthermore if you really WanNa make sure that your effort is invested in things of eternal value you actually have to get caught in your corner. Otherwise you know we're just kinda putting bandaids on a on a second chessmen. How important is your personal credibility with the people that you serve with? I think of my time in an infantry battalion and we had a number chaplains that would come in.

I don't think I've ever seen a team behave that way with they were trash talking the refs they made three after three and they were taunting Igwe dollar looked like a child laughing and pointing at the referee. If you don't know what happened at the end of the game the refs were terrible, and they took away. What would have been a made three by Durant that came with a free throw that would've won the game. They said, no. And it's just because they were in Minnesota. They said he was still on the floor. They didn't give him continuation. He was already off the ground when he shot it made the three found so they took that away. And then Steph went into the corner and made another three anyway. "For that is the scourge of the balloon the new weapon of war. Of course is the airplane airplanes originally were used observation, but it was in English observation crew that began taking up hunting rifles with them, and they would take potshots at German observation aircraft. So the the usefulness the the product of aerial reconnaissance was recognized very very early on. And it came to fruition and World War One. The the the observer aloft the guy in the balloon can also adjust artillery in in the civil war artillery tended to be what we call direct fire that is you have a bunch of cannon the enemies across the valley. And you sit there new shoot directly at them. It was after the American civil war that canon began to be used in what's called indirect fire where you couldn't. See the enemy you had to rely on geometry and algebra and accurate. Descriptions of an observer to plant your artillery, and so. What better way to see the enemy then above him right by air? At the hands of a German machine gun guarding observation balloon, and he can tell the story like, you know, happened in our our earlier. So that counter reconnaissance became. You know, a new mission for for aircraft. So the utility of of this type reconnaissance could be utilized locally by an infantry battalion commander or regiment World War Two we had aerial reconnaissance down at the regimental and brigade levels. But then there was another level, and that was the strategic level and that really came into its own after World War Two..
