After clashes, Pakistani police pause siege at ex-PM's home
"Clashes between police and supporters of ex Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan, persisted in the eastern city of Lahore, a day after police came to arrest him. Supporters of Khan tried to block access to the police who had come to detain him for failing to appear in court on graft charges. The officers fired tear gas at the house as the 70 year old opposition leader's supporters held rocks and bricks in retaliation, Khan's party lawyer latifah told the AP that the police came without any legal documents. And bombard with shelling and plain water mixed with dangerous chemicals. We are feeling burning in our skin in our hands in our eyes. The following morning tempers were still high as supporters continued to protect Khan and police continued their efforts to arrest him. Khan has claimed that the string of cases against him are a plot by the government of his successor prime minister chapari to

"It's rich in detail, it's a political history offering a comprehensive account of the issues and events. The people in the politics that have shaped this nation. Now, to discuss this 5th and final dish, that's right. 5 volumes extraordinary. And this particular edition deals with the period after Robert mendy, so from 1966 right through to this year, 2022. I'm joined by David Kemp. He was a long serving Victorian MP who represented the electorate of goldstone. This was from 1990 to 2004. Now these days, it's held by the teal. Zoey Daniels. And he was also a minister a member of cabinet in the Howard government. Now before entering parliament, David Kemp was a Professor of politics at monash university and a senior adviser to prime minister Malcolm, for his David, great to have you back on the program. Thank you very much, Tom. Now before we talk about the post mendy zero, your latest thesis, just give us a quick recap of the previous volume, so we're talking about four volumes from 1788 right through to 1966. Well, the whole project is really concerned to tell the story of what I've called the liberal project in Australia. And that project is an attempt to establish in this country a society based around the idea of human dignity for all equal human dignity. And how did that project become established? Well, it has all to do with Australia's unique moment of establishment. At the time of the British and European enlightenment, in the enlightenment, the idea that all people were members of a common humanity that policy should be in the public interest and wrestling argued and determined that all people should have a chance to have an opportunity in society with equal rights, but there should be civil liberties, a freedom of speech and commercial freedom, freedom of religion. These ideas began to be established with the arrival of the British in 1788 and what I've tried to do in these volumes is to trace through the political impact of these sorts of ideas. And of course, they've never dominated the whole political scene there have always been other ideas, other projects, Christian projects, socialist projects, and so forth. But the volumes trace particularly the fate of the successes and the failures of the liberal project. And this final volume is an attempt to assess really where the liberal project stands today in Australia. Just going back to your fourth volume. This was the last volume and we did a session on this liberal state from 1926 to 66 weeks. We spoke about that a couple of years ago, I think, just humor me with a counterfactual David.

"So in East Asia, look at how the Taiwanese or the South Koreans use their close ties with the U.S. during the Cold War. They modernize their economies. They built world class industries, they pull their people out of poverty and to prosperity. And Pakistan did none of those things. I mean, basically it used its closeness to the U.S. by the general siphoned off aid. They gave themselves sweetheart real estate deals. And Pakistan has really failed to modernize its economy. It failed to take off, not only compared to the East Asian economy, but even compared to some of the South Asian countries, India or Bangladesh, and so there is a sense of frustration and there's a sense of resentment among many Pakistanis that Pakistan has slipped on the world stage, but I wouldn't blame America for that. There are many countries that were close to America that did really well. And the countries that were close to America and that didn't do well. I think they should look inward and blame themselves. Yes, well, I mean, during the Cold War, of course, America did tilt in favor of Pakistan over India and Imran Khan, one of his other arguments is he wants Pakistan to emulate India. He prizes India for its independent foreign policy. What do you make of those of you? It's quite ironic, right? I never thought I'd live to see the day where you have a popular Pakistani politician playing clips of the Indian foreign minister at his rallies like pounds of people and saying, look, we need to be more like these guys. The essence of truth is argument is that India manages to have a close relationship with the U.S. through the quad and elsewhere. Despite the fact that it also maintains close relations with the Russians. And the example he uses is that India has continued to buy Russian oil even after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In fact, India has significantly stepped up its purchase of Russian oil since the invasion. And he says, well, if India can do it, why can't Pakistan? And the response to that is actually pretty obvious.

"Them one by one. He has, this is Imran Khan. He suggested that people within the government might have been behind the recent shooting. This was a month ago, so he left office in April a month ago. He was shot at. He blames people within the government for this attempt on his life. So he says he says it's an assassination attempt. Is there any proof to support this allegation? We just have allegations and counter allegations. Now, what Imran Khan says is that he was shot. This is the fact he was shot in the leg. It was clearly an assassination attempt. And he may well have been killed. The official version is that the assassin was a lone religious fanatic who attacked Imran Khan because he thought Imran Khan was likening himself to the prophet Muhammad. That person was later seen on YouTube saying this. Imran Khan's version is very specific. He has mentioned the prime minister and he's mentioned the interior minister. And he's mentioned a serving major general in the ISI, which is the Pakistan army's intelligence agency. And he said that these people were behind the plot to have a fascinated. And the part that is really quite that is created a political earthquake in Pakistan is his going after senior officer, major general in the intelligence service, which is typically a real, it's a real no no in Pakistani public life. But Imran Khan has gone there. And he's also pointed fingers at U.S. involvement in this alleged conspiracy against him. Again, any proof? Well, not in the assassination attempt. So he's claims that the U.S. was behind his ouster in April. It's actually quite a completely far fetched claim and people like you who understand how Washington works and how diplomacy works would sort of find it laughable. What he claims that at a lunch, a senior State Department official, the assistant secretary for south and Central Asia. Said to the ambassador that relations would not be good as long as Imran Khan was in power, which was the signal to get to turf him out of office. As you and I know, that's not how exactly. Work. But you know, he has a little there are many, many people in Pakistan who believe this, and if you were to say anything about this on Twitter, for instance, you instantly get dozens of passionate Imran Khan supporters insisting that in fact it was the U.S. that turfed him out of office. So he's made political capital. He's got a good political story. He's telling it, in my view, it's not remotely factual. Well, he does accuse the U.S. and he's not alone as you say. There's a lot of people in Pakistan who believe this and there are scholars in the west. I think of Noam Chomsky and John pilger among others. He's accused the U.S. of imposing a master slave relationship on Pakistan and using Pakistan like quote tissue paper. Does America treat Pakistan as a slave nation? Well, you know, all I could say is that if that's a monstrous slave relationship, I think there'd be many more countries signing up to be played. Because the truth is time the U.S. has been very generous towards Pakistan over many, many decades. It's given Pakistan tens of billions of dollars of aid, both economic assistance and military assistance. It has had its head Pakistan's back, diplomatically for much of its history. And I think the real tragedy of Pakistan is that it did not take advantage of his closeness with the U.S. the way better run countries did.

"Imran Khan, what comes to your mind? Well, many of us have a certain sports vintage. We think of the legendary Pakistani cricket all rounder, wasn't he outstanding. He played test cricket from 1971 to 1992. That's an extraordinary innings. After Imran Khan stepped down as a captain of Pakistan's greatest ever test cricket team, this was 30 years ago. He said his heart on a most improbable ambition to become prime minister, a feat he accomplished in 2018. He set himself the task of rescuing fellow Pakistanis from what he's always seen as a corrupt political elite. And there were widespread hopes that Imran Khan could repeat on the world stage what he did for Pakistan test cricket, decades ago. That is lift Pakistan out of the doldrums and turn it into an efficient state capable of realizing its fabulous potential. However, those expectations have been hardly met. Have they? Imran Khan lost power in controversial fashion last April. And having survived an apparent assassination attempt, he's calling for new elections. So why is the 70 year old former leader Imran Khan in trouble? Can he bounce back? And what does all this mean for Pakistan? A nation with 200 million people, huge natural resources, but since independence 75 years ago, a troubled nation beset by problems of terror, poverty, and corruption. Pseudonym dumai is a columnist at The Wall Street Journal, a former Delhi and Jakarta correspondent and a senior fellow at the American enterprise institute in Washington. Sudan, welcome back to between the lines. Good to be back, Tom. Now let's just begin with some context in April, Imran Khan was ousted from power in a no confidence vote. Why? Well, the short reason is that he lost the confidence of parliament. The longer reason is that he lost the confidence of the chief of the army, who was the most powerful person in Pakistan. And his very tenuous majority in parliament that had been cobbled together with the help of the army in 2018 collapsed once the army stopped backing him and therefore he was drift out of power. Okay, now the former prime minister has made all sorts of allegations.

"We start with the unending political turmoil in Pakistan. The observation that Pakistani politics is a high risk endeavor is not an original one, but any scrutiny of the fates of its office holders since the country's foundation 75 years ago is nevertheless astonishing. The Wikipedia page entitled assassinated Pakistani politicians has 44 entries, and though it does include three members of the Bhutto family, it excludes prime minister zulfikar Ali Bhutto, presumably on the technicality that he, though after an altogether dubious judicial process, was executed. And this is to say nothing of those who have been arrested jailed exiled overthrown or undermined a cohort which might require not merely a separate Wikipedia page but a separate Wikipedia. Moving up the rankings of Pakistani prime ministerial mishap this week is Imran Khan, who has managed to get himself charged by police with breaching the country's anti terrorism act. As of this broadcast, he seems likely to appear in court later this week after which the spectrum of possibilities ranges from this turning out not to be much of a thing, at least until the next thing, to being a very big thing indeed. Elsewhere, Pakistan's media watchdog, the excitingly named Pakistan electronic media regulatory agency forbade forthwith the live broadcast of any of Imran Khan's speeches, which ruled pemra, prejudicial to the maintenance of Law & Order and likely to disturb public peace and tranquility, which is quite the thing to say about someone who was running the country 5 months ago. At which point they brisk recap. After many years, cultivating his almost populist outsider shtick, Imran can't became prime minister in 2018 when his Pakistan Tariq E insaf party or PTI won that year's general election. By this past April, he was a little over a year away from becoming the first ever Pakistani prime minister to complete a full 5 year term. No confidence against mister Imran Khan, the prime minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan has been passed by a majority, but almost as if observing tradition, Pakistan's parliament in which the PTI's majority had been whittled by defections, tabled and passed a vote of no confidence in Khan's government, removing him from office. Sub editors around the world rejoiced at the opportunity to conjure headlines making crashing reference to Khan's pre politics career as a fine international cricketer. Indeed, captain of Pakistan's national team. He'd been hit by a bouncer, bowled by a Googly caught out stumped or any number of other metaphors for having one's innings curtailed. But in cricket, you know when you're done, the rattle of your stomps as the ball scatters the bales, the deathly thud of a straightening delivery into your pads, the agonizing SNCC off the edge of your bat, followed by the wicket keeper's bellowed appeal. Indeed, a gentleman walks back to the pavilion bat cradled nobly under one armed stoic expression adorning the visage without waiting for the umpire to raise a finger. In politics, there is always the temptation to stand your ground. Refuse, if you will, to leave the crease. The job of a prime minister in difficult circumstances when he's been handed a gloss or mandate is to keep going. And that's what I'm going to do. Since being unloaded by parliament, Khan has succumbed to this temptation. He has lent heavily into a line of populist indeed downright trumpets to paranoia, fulminating at a deep state and or international plot to thwart the will of the people as naturally, personified by himself. They can try to steal the election from us. If you count the votes that came in late. And this is what dropped Khan into the soup in which he is presently thrashing. On Saturday, Khan gave a speech to supporters in Islamabad, in which he elaborated on his vexation at the recent arrest of his chief of staff, shahbaz gill. Gil was taken in accused of inciting rebellion in vain against state institutions and so forth. He has accused police of torturing him. Khan, in his Islamabad speech, accused cops and judges of being in on the general plot. Islamabad, Islamabad inspector general and deputy will not spare you will file suit against you. You all should be ashamed of what you have done. Let me tell you. In more established democracies, such as to pick a completely random example, no real reason, et cetera, the United States, when a given politician commences on about the deep state, the swamp, the blob, or whatever nefarious conspiracy they believe to be scheming against them, they can be safely dismissed as any or all of a huckster a bungalow a whiner, a crank, or a plain and simple idiot who has no idea how anything works. But in Pakistan, the possibility that Khan has a case does have to be acknowledged. He has accused Pakistan's powerful military of behind the scenes involvement in his removal, and it would hardly be the first time. If Khan's downfall actually was or is in any sense a coup d'etat, it would be depending on how you count these things may be Pakistan's tenth actual or attempted such intervention. No confidence against mister Imran Khan, the prime minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan has been passed by a majority, but almost as if observing tradition Pakistan's parliament in which the PTI's majority had been whittled by defections, tabled and passed a vote of no confidence in Khan's government, removing him from office. The job of a prime minister in difficult circumstances when he's been handed a colossal mandate is to keep going. They can try to steal the election from us if you count the votes that came in late. Islamabad inspector general and deputy will not spare you will file suit against you. If Khan's downfall actually was or is in any sense, I could, it would be depending on how you count these things, maybe Pakistan's tenth actual or attempted such intervention. As for what might happen next, the only sensible bet in Pakistani politics is against the straightforward and transparent outcome that everyone is broadly okay with. "House. Mister Khan criticized the use of Pakistan's electronic media regulatory authority, to try to silence him. They're using inman Khan can't go on their life. What crime was Imran Khan committed? I will never accept this gang of thieves. This is the crime of Imran Khan. This is the crime. Our correspondent ambassador is watching what's going on. Hundreds of supporters of the former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan have gathered outside this residence in the capital city Islamabad to show solidarity with them because there are reports of artist warrant against him. He spoke in a public meeting where he was criticizing the police as well as female judge for the detention and alleged torture of one of his close aides. And the police have registered a case against him because he was criticizing the members of a state institution as well as naming a female judge and the Pakistani media regulator electronic media regulator. In fact, banned this live speeches because of what it called as hate speech against state institutions so there is a tense situation and the PTA party of Imran Khan, the leaders have been asking their supporters to converge in various capitals to hold them in case if mister Khan is arrested. Tell us a little bit more about the nature of this investigation and the law under which he's being investigated. Now he has been booked or the registered a complaint against him under sections of the anti terrorism act for inciting people against state institutions like the police and also many of the governing party ministers have been criticizing mister Khan for naming a female judge who allowed police to take custody of this close aid shabazz gill for interrogation. He has there been any evidence that shahbaz gill was actually mistreated. So far, there is no evidence to show, but mister Imran Khan has been saying that he was ill treated and also tortured in custody. The whole thing goes back to, you know, mister Khan's very disappointment or, in fact, he was very angry with the way he was ousted from power in April. He lost the vote of confidence in parliament after some members of the coalition parties. They left, and he blamed the United States for the regime change what he called because he was very critical of the U.S. government's policies, and that is why he was allosteric from power that led to a coalition led by pml Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Sharif. Faction, they are now governing Pakistan. And that has led to tension because mister Khan wants fresh elections so that he can go to people and make his case and he wants to run for elections again to show that he's still popular. That was ambras on at a large and since we've been on air, we just heard that Imran Khan has been charged, although he hasn't been arrested. If we hear any more, we will bring it to you during the program. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain one of the world's greatest security challenges last month, Kim Jong-un said the north was ready to mobilize its nuclear weapons in any war with the south and United States. The two allies are holding their largest joint military exercises in years, but there's concern that practicing fighting a war against an increasingly hostile north could give the communist state a chance to retaliate. Our sole correspondent gene Mackenzie was given rare access to the joint operations center where the war games are run. I think I mentioned earlier too that everything for tonight has been released. I told them upstairs. I'm deep underground in a military bunker outside Seoul. The walls are plastered with satellite images and maps of North Korea. And in the dark, studying the pictures, a two air force kernels, one South Korean, the other is American. I'm colonel Anthony, Kaczynski, my call sinus Ted, my counterpart is colonel sow. We sit side by side, shoulder to shoulder. This is where the U.S. and South Korean military's work together to defend against a North Korean attack. They're taking in vast amounts of intelligence, as well as controlling their armies, air forces, space and cyber operations from here. Depending on the type of missile and where it's launched, we have the ability to be able to detect the instant it gets off the ground. There could be heat signatures, radar signatures, there's multiple sources that tells us the trajectory and where that might be going. The threat from North Korea is increasing. And so over the next 9 days, the two sides will practice for the first time in years how to defeat their common enemy using their aircraft's warships and tanks. So there are certain aspects of what I do that can only be described as kind of like an art. I can't do it in a classroom. I can't do it on a chalkboard. I have to give them the most intense environment that we can create, and this is that

Russian investigators say the bomb attack that killed darade Gina but presumably targeted her father the far right ideologue Alexander dugan was preplanned and commissioned. The explosives are planted on mister dugan's car, but he escaped assassination after switching vehicles with his daughter after an event outside Moscow. Will Vernon reports. Russian media said that her father, the nationalist philosopher Alexander dugan, was meant to have been traveling in the car. Like her father was a vocal supporter of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and they have both been sanctioned by the west. The authorities have not yet said who was behind the attack, but officials here are already speculating about who was to blame. Car bombs and assassinations are rare in Moscow. But incidents like this will make officials here nervous. As the war in Ukraine grinds on, the potential for instability at home will be a cause for concern in the Kremlin. "What Imran Khan's ouster means for Pakistan's future by Ian bremmer. Following weeks of political turmoil, Pakistan's prime minister Imran Khan is out, shabazz Sharif is in, and the country streak of political dysfunction continues. No elected prime minister has ever served a full 5 year term, though Khan is the first to be removed by a vote of no confidence in parliament. This sad statistic is explained by constant infighting among the country's political factions, a culture of official corruption, and frequent interventions of military leaders determined to protect their prerogatives. Many of those who voted for the charismatic Khan in 2018 hoped he might end these cycles of failure. He came from neither the Bhutto nor Sharif factions, the dynasties that had dominated Pakistan's modern politics. His status as a genuine political outsider gave credibility to his campaign pledge to attack the country's endemic graft. He also appeared to have the blessing of the perpetually meddlesome military. But four years later, Khan has fallen victim to tough economic times. Inflation, including for food is hitting record highs, unemployment is high, debts and deficits are rising. But his increasingly controversial foreign policy also played a big role in his ouster by helping to poison his relationship with Pakistan's military brass. The generals have long signaled that good working relationships with both China and the U.S. are critical to Pakistan's security. They know that China is the most reliable long-term ally against India. Pakistan's chief rival, and that Chinese investment remains crucial for the future of Pakistan's economy. But they also know that the U.S. and EU are Pakistan's lead export markets, and that good relations with the International Monetary Fund in which the U.S. plays a crucial role are important for Pakistan's economic well-being. Imran Khan appeared headed in another direction. In recent weeks he tried to boost his popularity by playing to the anti American hostility of his core voters. He set off alarm bells in Washington and among Pakistan's generals with a visit to Vladimir Putin in Moscow on the first day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. That trip was long planned, and its purpose was to secure badly needed Russian natural gas for Pakistan's economy. But Khan has done little to discourage the suspicion that he's a fan of Russia's president, his government then abstained from voting to condemn Russia's invasion. When his parliamentary coalition began to fracture and it appeared the military supported a bid by lawmakers to oust him via a vote of no confidence, Khan blamed a conspiracy led by the west, by which he surely meant the U.S., to push him aside in favor of some one Washington likes better. Now, he's out. The new prime minister shabazz Sharif represents a reversion to the old Pakistan, according to Khan and his supporters. Sharif is the 70 year old younger brother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, he's also a veteran politician and a former chief minister of Punjab. His primary task will be to try to restore the country's economic stability at a time when broader threats to the global economy will continue to create obstacles. But this new government will also return foreign policy to the old Pakistan model by working hard at the increasingly daunting task of keeping good relations with both America and China..

talk with doctor Anthony Fauci about getting a fourth shot and the critical funding needed for COVID-19 treatment vaccines and testing But first this week former president Barack Obama returned to The White House for the first time on the 12th anniversary of his landmark healthcare bill or ObamaCare as it became known appearing with the man who was his vice president and is now the president It is good to be back in The White House It's been a while I confess I heard some changes have been made President Biden used the occasion to announce new regulations to expand and improve ObamaCare If this changed it's estimated that 200,000 presently uninsured Americans are going to gain coverage Nearly 1 million Americans will see their coverage become more affordable To take us through the changes at what war should be done I talked to doctor Catherine baker dean of the University of Chicago's Harris school of public policy There were a number of glitches or unintended consequences of the original ObamaCare or Affordable Care Act formulation that this is an opportunity to potentially fix one of The example here is called the family glitch where people with low incomes are eligible for subsidies to get care on marketplaces or health insurance exchanges if the care that if the insurance they're offered from their employer is unaffordable But the way unaffordable is defined is based on the cost of an individual plan even though the whole family might need coverage and a family plan might be unaffordable So there's just a mismatch in the way coverage is defined and the way affordability is defined that there's an administrative fix for that the current policy is aiming to address This would make more families eligible for subsidies which would make insurance more affordable for them Was this just a mistake in the original regulations about how to get drafted this way Of course I was not part of the drafting and I can only guess but my guess is that it was just a mistake I think that they're in legislation as complicated as this there are lots of pieces that all have to work in concert And if things are defined differently in different parts of a complicated statute it can create gaps or glitches that I do not think worthy intention If you look back at Medicare from the 1960s there have been so many fixes of that program because it has just been an incredibly complicated thing to administer Yeah and if anybody doubts what you just said they should take a look at the code of federal regulation It does understand how complicated and how lengthy these things are Are there other I'll put it in quotation marks mistakes like this that need correcting Well another example of something that I don't think was intended but isn't this kind of glitch is that when the law was originally drafted the assumption would be that all states would be expanding their Medicaid programs But then of course that was challenged in the Supreme.

study economics undergrad you get an MBA how did you find your way to Wall Street What did you do between your undergraduate and your MBA Interestingly enough I actually didn't study economics as an undergrad I studied political science and English literature And I took one economics course I think that that's why I'm so good at always reducing things to basic supply and demand because that's how far I got And I was into Columbia law school and I was planning on attending and a friend of mine said you know the investment banks now have analyst programs and they claim they're just looking for smart people and you don't need to know anything And I thought I was smart And I still wasn't charged I said well I'm going to law school And I'll never forget She said to me well there's free food And I said well free food I'll definitely show up And I literally showed up interviewed with a few places was fortunate enough to get some offers and I decided to go to dressel Burnham And I worked at drexel Burnham for just short of two years between business business school and college because obviously drexel didn't make it the full two years but it was an amazing experience before I went to business school Really really intriguing I never knew that MBA programs came with free food Otherwise I might not have gone to law school I didn't know that That's really interesting So you go from drexel which you're primarily known as an M and a shop to McKinsey the big consultancy what was that transition like How did you find yourself operating when you were no longer in what essentially was one of the hottest M and a shops on the street So when I went to business school a couple of things happened One is because I didn't have traditional undergraduate economics or finance or accounting I really only knew about finance because that's where I wound up And so I learned so much more about the strategic aspects of business Second of all I met my wife the third day of business school And we discussed where we wanted to be And we wanted to be in Boston and at the time there weren't a lot of finance jobs in Boston And I had the good fortune of meeting the people from the McKinsey Boston office which was quite small at the time I was able to go there as a summer really found the work interesting and probably even more so the people were truly extraordinary people Great teachers really intellectually curious And the second year of business school because my clients were local I was able to actually work part time in that office the second year of business school And I had accepted the offer I went back there My wife actually was working at a different consulting firm She was at DCG But there was part of me that always thought I would get back to some form of finance or investing And Bain capital in early 1993 was raising its first institutional fund Historically we were less than ten years old in historically had basically had high net worth funds And we were jumping from a $120 million fund to a $300 million fund which at the time seemed enormous And I got a call from somebody I knew here and he said we're trying to quote beef up a little bit I think the firm had fewer than 20 investors And we want somebody with consulting and banking experience Are you interested in talking to us And.

Colonel Richard Kemp Says Jihadists, China, and Russia Are Celebrating the Afghanistan Crisis
"You know, we're seeing what we face now is a a terrorist threat coming out of Afghanistan. That is greater than the terrorist threat before 9 11 jihadists around the world have been celebrating. The events and not least the president. Not this is a jihadist, but the president of Pakistan, Imran Khan, who himself celebrated it, he should be celebrating because Pakistan significantly funded The Taliban throughout the campaign, while at the same time being paid vast amounts of money by America and Britain. Um, but they're celebrating around the world. Hamas in Gaza are celebrating What's happening here? Um, and they will be re energize. They will have to see that their recruitment has been boosted. They will be reinvigorated and they will launched attacks around the world against our countries, as they did really when they were being inspired by the Islamic state. Al Qaeda and the Islamic state are strong in Afghanistan. At the moment, Al Qaeda fought alongside the Taliban in recent battles. They will operate freely. Just doesn't matter what the Taliban say to you. They will allow the Al Qaeda in the Islamic state to operate freely there, and they can operate more freely than they could before 9 11. Because they know there's no fear of Western intervention. Now that's finished. That's history. There's not going to happen again. They know that and so they'll be even bolder than before and jihadist from around the world will flock into Afghanistan. To train prepare and launch attacks against the West. So The state of the terrorist threat is higher than it was at the height of the Islamic state's power when they controlled large parts of Syria and of Iraq. That's just one aspect of The situation. There is no one really who is celebrating this situation more than Russia and China. They're the greatest cheerleaders for what's happened.

Gaming Ride Home
EVO 2020 was cancelled
"Yvo Twenty twenty has been canceled due to various sexual abuse allegations. Yvo Is the biggest annual fighting game tournament in the world, and even with the covid nineteen issues plaguing everyone on the planet. The tournament was soldiering on with plans to make it fully online. Earlier this week, however that all fell apart, and in order to learn more about it, I called on Imran Khan to explain everything Imron. Come into the gaming ride home show again for having me Yvo was canceled. And I just want you to give me the full story. What happened? Why was it canceled? Everything start from the beginning, so ego is the biggest fighting tournament in America Kinda the biggest in the world. There's like some discussion about that at this point, but ego is basically where fighting games have been aspiring to for the last twenty thirty years and listening started in the ninety S. This year, obviously because of covid kit have their usual Mandalay Bay Las Vegas big gathering of fighting game players. So this year they ended up canceling I place. Eve Online Eve online was a different thing where the. Mainly, got games together with like Netco like mortal Kombat eleven and them fighting her indie game that was originally based on my little pony, but basically it was A. It has to evolve brand that could stay around despite not being the big mass gathering tournament that they expect over the last couple of weeks. There's been a bigger. industry-wide movement to out sexual predators in gaming and the gaming industry, and some companies have been hit harder than that are with that bubis off for example, but for the most part it's. It's not a huge thing within the FTC. Because the FTC's always kind of had a reputation of like. Being a bit more open with their sexual harassment and it's always like. It's never been to a level of. A mass critical mass. Joey quilter this past week yesterday in for yesterday in fact was outed by a player. Named He's just does mikey. He goes online and is after the tag is crack. Peron but George Taylor. Who is the head of the current? President Vivo who founded it with Tommy Tony Kanaan. was outed for experiences when he was. Close, to twenty, where they were southern golf land, which is an amusement park in l. a.. That mikey accused him of basically. Paying money to young kids to take their shirts. Germany polls mikey related experience where he said quarter. Paid him twenty dollars to see his genitals inside a restroom and bought him pornography so. It's IT'S A. It's a larger thing that when you look at it from the perspective of not a child who just thinks they're having fun. It's real creepy, but what is conditions came out. Other people's Front, also coming out of the woodwork, saying like more finding old chaser people were talking about doing these things, but not naming names, and now that it's out. The floodgates are broken out. Yvonne immediately went. No, WE'RE GONNA put on administrative leave and check this out, so I mentioned Tom. Tony Kennedy before their more famous like they are obviously co-founders of ego, but there are more famous right now for being developers of Product L. at riot games so. They had to step in for this and go okay. We're looking at this right now. We're investigating and seeing what happens. It did not take very long before nether realm. I believe the first one like say. Are Involved with ego involvement in that sense means we don't WanNA game there. We're not going to earn any money towards prize pools. We're not doing any advertising which is fairly big deal. Arguably moral combat was like the lead game for that tournament. Right for the online tournament. Yes, Merle come at usually has a hard time with like the in person tournament. Fighting community hasn't really take to that game too well, but as an online net code game like for example, smash brothers was canceled for Eve online because the net code. Isn't that good, so this is more time to shine. The actual like really arguably was streetfighter as it is every year. This year. Are Not meeting her, but a little bit. After another canceled COP CANCELED IN ONCE CAPCOM cancels gets away from ego. Then that's that's the ballgame lets. Everything goes away soon after main sex developers of them biting heard who this is their big chance to become A. Kind of a household name and if I didn't need community, they cancelled. Bay Namco canceled and ran into that ego are the canons came out with a message from as ego saying? Hey, we were cutting for joy color. He is not president anymore. In the future, he will have zero involvement with the organization this not he's going to not be on. He's going to be on the board, or he'll be the FCC or he'll still kind of tournaments. They're cutting it off completely. Shortly after that they also that announced, we can't under these circumstances and this change in organization also do evil online in a couple of weeks in August. A month or in August? I. Know that screws over a lot of people, but. It seems like honestly the best. Call right now of. You'RE GONNA have to go through with work. That joy has done or you're going to have to. Try It's from scratch. Cobble together in event that takes at least a year to actually set up and try to get together in a couple of weeks. Yeah, I mean they just they basically. Got Rid of the boss in the most public way, possible right I mean it's it's you can't just like recover from that in a matter of weeks. Really Yeah, it's. It is one of those things of a lot of this is. Probably high time for the funding community insert reckoning with a lot of these things, because it's an issue for a number of years, it was I. I don't know if you recall but a about eight years ago, there was a street fight across capcom across Tekken. Show online, and it ended up ending as a result of some sexual harassment claims, and those a big divide in the community about like whether sexual harassment was a just a part of the culture or not and. Stuff like this doesn't help that argument. No I mean I like you, said earlier I mean like. Feels like the right call to elevate it, and as disappointing as it is for Yvo to be cancelled like it's a big flag for like we need to address. This is if we're going to cancel this event because we need to look at ourselves internally and I think I. Mean Hope the hope is that they come out better on the other side. I mean it seems like this is one of those things where. I. Hesitate to say Covid kind of save them but. If. This were an actual in person things still at Mandalay Bay then they wouldn't be able to cancer that quickly an online tournament. Shuttered a lot more easily. The bigger question now is what happens next year.

Monocle 24: The Foreign Desk
Why has Pakistan sentenced a former president to death?
"Pakistan was founded in nineteen forty seven. It has not proved an easy country to lead indeed indeed. It's something of a Wanda anyone tries. In those seven. Short decades of its existence Pakistan has seen two presidents or the equivalent overthrown in coups. WHO's to forced into resignation to quitting to avoid impeachment one hanged one killed in an arguably suspicious plane crash one chased into exile one one dying from illness in office of Pakistan's prime ministers four have being sacked three unloaded by their own parties. One chased into exile one on assassinated one chased into exile and then assassinated upon their return and these are an incomplete assessment of the hazards attendant upon high office in Pakistan. We've only got about five minutes and at any rate to say. Nothing of uncountable. Attempted assassinations failed. Coups d'etat and sundry abortive altuve plots any occupant of Pakistan's presidential palace or prime ministerial residence nose to sleep with one eye open and a pistol beneath a pillow pillow so it is possible that Pervez Musharraf who was president of Pakistan between two thousand and one and two thousand eight has responded philosophically to the death sentence passed upon him this week by a court in Islamabad which convicted him of high treason. Musharraf cannot claim that he didn't know what he was getting himself into to inaction at. This moment is suicide for Pakistan and I cannot allow this country to commit suicide. I had to take this action in order to preserve the democratic transition then rick I initiated Massara also enjoys the constellation that the sentence is unlikely ever to be enacted he received news of the verdict in Dubai. Are you where he has lived since two thousand sixteen having prudently contracted around then a mysterious ailment. That could not possibly have been treated. In any of Pakistan's many perfectly serviceable hospitals certain reprehensible cynics have further suggested that the United Arab Emirates lack of an extradition treaty with Pakistan may have been as much a factor in sheriff's choice of destination as the healthcare in assessing the reasons for what has befallen Musharraf. It is worth recapping how he gained power in Pakistan and how he lost it. Musharraf was a career army officer and by one thousand nine hundred nine join held the rank of general and the title of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Pakistan's senior most military role that year tensions between Musharaff Graf and then Prime Minister Sharif climaxed in a coup d'etat in which Musharaff seized power. I would like to please do not expect your level of democracy which you learned over a number of centuries all trying to learn and we are doing well the last time Musharraf held office surviving at least a two assassination attempts until two thousand eight when he resigned amid chaos and turbulence encroaching from a number of fronts. He left for London and returned to Pakistan in two thousand thirteen hoping to campaign for office again but found himself under house arrest. Prominent among a lengthy list of accusations against him was involvement in the assassination of former prime minister and former Philo exile Benazir Bhutto. who was murdered shortly after her return to Pakistan in two thousand and seven tourist allies and we are prepared to risk the liberty but we are not prepared to surrender our great nation the militants? This is not what Musharraf has been convicted of however however the high treason charge relates to his unsuccessful last-ditch attempt to prolong his presidency in two thousand and seven. He declared a state of emergency see and suspended. The constitution pulled the plugs on TV. Channels sacked the chief justice of the Supreme Court and had several opposition figures placed under house. Arrest I including current Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan Musharraf may be reflecting that some of his former foes have long memories but so Doodoo who do some of his former comrades Pakistan's military has always taken a flexible view of the convention of submission to Civilian Command and one of the more more brow arching responses to the death sentence against Musharraf has come from the Pakistani military's media department which said that the sentence had been received and with a lot of pain and anguish by the rank and file of Pakistan's armed forces. It also suggested in an unmistakable tone of airy menace that June legal. Google process seems to have been ignored and that an officer of Musharraf's statue could surely never be a traitor. Nice little independent judiciary dish area. You have here wouldn't want anything to happen to. If one sets aside any squeamishness about capital punishment with the conviction of Michelle off is arguably a step forward for Pakistan's always fraught and fragile constitutional democracy a robust assertion of the rule of law against a rogue officer who took power by force and tried to keep it by the same means however nobody in Pakistan needs reminding of the tendency of Pakistan's military to assert itself right back Woah never done in China because children deal outside Pete as we go to Air Musharaff's legal team claimed their client intends to challenge the guilty verdict and the death sentence in Pakistan's Supreme Court. It would be better for his country and himself if he did so from a distance
