Premium VOD Is a Failed Experiment, Imax CEO Rich Gelfond Says

"You could do that Much anticipated Mullan remake is available on Disney plus for $30, but Disney isn't saying how many subscribers air taking up the offer, or whether it plans to try it again for other delayed releases. Max CEO Rich Girl Fund is already calling premium video on demand. Ah, failed experiment. He was too kind. Michael Pachter covers the entertainment industry at Wedbush Securities, he says, until more consumers feel safe filling the seats. Moviemakers may need to adjust the prices they charge streaming viewers. Maybe we'd be willing to pay $8. You know, we waited Two months or 2.5 months. And maybe we'd be willing to pay $10 if we waited six weeks. Eight weeks. I mean, that, I think would make sense.

Ethics of Commercial and Military Space

"I'm Fraser. Cain publisher of University with me as always Dr Pamela. Gay a senior scientist for the Planetary Science Institute and the Director of Bus Hip Pamela. Hey doing I'm doing well. How are you doing fraser a once again? The weather's just getting better and better. The apocalypse has never looked so. Lovely Garden is getting out of control. Is the chief sentence. It is now in control and we've got to cut it back. There's just too many plants too much grass too much weeds. I got many weeks ahead of me at this point out in the garden. The day of the trip is trying to be upon you exactly every year. More and more people are making their way to space. Some private citizens have already gotten their astronaut wings paying for a trip to space out of their own pocket. What are the ethical implications of this as the cost of spaceflight? Come down so we've got a new series. We're going to do like at least a two part series. Maybe at most two part series home. But this week we're going to talk about private spaceflight and just what are the ethical issues with this? Next week we will talk about military spaceflight. We're GONNA talk about Space Force. Although I think if we got timing a little better we could do. The episode after Space Force COMES OUT THE NEW TV show. Oh Yeah we can pull that off. Can we may thirty first. So let's talk about today. We'll talk about space tourism. The new movie that is planned next week will look at the trade off between commercial space and scientific exploration from the ground. So issues like the iridium satellites and of space resources for economic purposes. And then we'll go to space force. Okay now we've done two episodes about space tourism to fourteen and four fifty one to cover too much ground. But I think the thing that I found very interesting was just the way you had proposed it. Which is let's deal with the commercial and the ethics of this situation and we'll sort of see where that gets US first. Let's just talk about like? How do you define private spaceflight? When the purpose is the economic benefits of the parent company and its shareholders over the advancement of science and exploration causes that benefit mankind rather than stakeholders and. I mean like one version. That could very well be space. Tourism that you've got a space tourism company that is sending people on flights and they're having fun in going to the zero g hotel and enjoying themselves or flying to the moon and printing about on the moon in that low gravity but that is really just a sub set of what private spaceflight could look like so when you think about that larger umbrella. What are some other examples of the kinds of missions? We'd be run privately. Well this is where we start looking at. And this is what triggered this for me Sending people to spaced film adventure movies rather than to do the normal peacekeeping educational and scientific endeavors that take place on the space station even space tourists up until now have pretty much been tasked with. We're going to train you like an astronaut. You're GONNA do education stuff while you're up there too. And Hey we may throw you a bone and give you a little bit of science to do right but right now. Tom Cruise is looking to partner with spacex to partner with NASA and this has been tweeted out by NASA administrator. Jim Breitenstein they're gonNA film a not mission impossible but certainly an impossible mission on the International Space Station. Yeah I can't even imagine how awful difficult that process is going to be. I think I had a chance to interview someone who took the Imax seventy millimeter imax cameras up on the space station and tried to make a documentary. They gable the gave the astronauts. They taught them how to use these cameras than they had to. Fly Up with these cameras and try to shoot what they were doing. While they're up there and then send the footage back down or it was on the space shuttle. Anyway it was tough. Because it's a great big bulky professional camera that shoots an enormous amount of film at this huge aspect ratio. And it's a real challenge and so same thing right. Does he do his own shooting? Do you send up another person. Who's who does can handle camera sound hair makeup fright to the Astros get involved so I just. The details of this are blowing my mind but I think when you when we look at just all of human existence today and we think about all the trips that human beings take the vast majority of them are private right. When you fly in an airplane you know ninety nine point nine nine. Nine percent of the airplane flights are for private purposes. You are on a trip. You are carrying cargo. You are doing this. And then every now and then some would fly the airplane to a hurricane or you know to take some aerial footage of a of a drought. And that's the scientific purposes but the vast majority into. Why wouldn't it be that into the future? This is where it starts to become a how the numbers work out. And what is the ethics of this kind of question and in the frame of reference? I'm using for this is when I was a graduate student at McDonald Observatory. We'd periodically get. Vip's coming through the telescope and no matter what we're observing for science at that moment we had to kind of put it on the back burner and yeah. We'd bang the keys that we needed to keep things more or less going in a timely fashion but we had to pay attention to these guests who might be funders who might potentially help keep our science going one more year with the money. They might give the Observatory. And this okay. We are a not for profit. Enterprise we exist thanks to the generosity of our donors thanks to our competitiveness in peer reviewed science funding opportunities and thanks to our benefit actors in the state government who give us line item budgets. We know that we exist by the grace of all of these different humans and so we have to dance like the dancing monkey when they appear to keep them happy. That is of the job that we are. All aware of and astronauts are fully aware that that is also part of their job. They are all given amounts of media-training they're given massive amounts of here are effective ways to communicate complex ideas how to work a crowd how to be this stem educator. Even though they may be training pilot an engineer a doctor a myriad of other different things geophysicist. But they're all trained to be educators in the role of astronauts and when they're on the International Space Station. They know part of their is going to be on video cons with girl scouts to Judge Science Fair from outer space to do all these different feel-good tasks that remind everyone. Hey we have astronauts so the funding keeps flowing. We know that's part of the job. But that's a few moments a few hours out of your day and what we're looking at here is filming a movie in Outer Space. We don't know how long Tom Cruise and whoever else might be on the International Space Station but what we do know is while they're up there there. It's a twenty four hour gig in a large way and so now. Instead of being there a stem professionals benefiting mankind inspiring engaging educating their crew on a movie that the movie's primary goal is to have a great storyline and earn a whole lot of profit. And so where is the ethics in having our astronauts instead of engaging people in Wasilla educate them about space having them work crew on a film

Teacher David MacDonald's Journey to Apple

"As always whenever we have a guest on the thing we all want to know and as kind of gear you're using so let's start with the MAC. What kind of Max are using so Most of my composition takes place on the MAC and most of my teaching takes place on the IPAD. The MACs that I have in my rotation are my laptop is a late twenty thirteen. Thirteen inch macbook pro. And at the time I had it pretty close to Spec out everything except the The internal. Ssd was Kinda maxed out. That's the obviously the really pricey one and that is believe it or not my first MAC so The first one that I personally owned I was all windows and Android all through school and My one of my first gigs out of school was an all Mac shop and they ended me a macbook pro twenty twelve. This was one of the body Max. It still had an optical drive and that really was my first MAC and I know everybody talks about. The iphone is the halo device to get people into the apple ecosystem for me. It was the other way round. I had a MAC for about a year and it took a little bit of adjustment but I quickly figured out the things that I liked better about especially Mac os than windows and that caused me to want to get mobile devices. That interacted better with my Mac. Because I had android tip I have probably three or four android tablets by that time and so i. I've always been a nerd anyway. So that's my laptop and my desktop is a twenty seventeen. Twenty seven inch I Mac Five K. I think it's the last generation of the imax before they introduced the I mac pro later that year. So that those are my two main my my main writing implements outside of obviously just paper and Pencil but they're they are serving me well. I'm pleasantly surprised at how well my twenty thirteen Mac. Pro is holding up. You know I haven't been hearing from a lot of people say you know windows. They've really come a long way. It's a lot better now is so much that I've been intentionally trying to not be abrasive about it on the show and My wife is working from home You know as we go through this and so she brought her work laptop home and the it people are at her company. Just overwhelmed. You know it takes five hours to get somebody on the phone. So when she's got a little it problem. I've been trying to help her. So I've been using windows a again and you know what I was wrong. It's still terrible. I I mean I feel like I know a lot about computers and getting it to do. Things is is really not very intuitive Mac. Os still is remarkably better than anything else on a on a traditional computing platform. I feel it has changed so much just in the couple of years. Since I've been a fulltime windows user that I I don't recognize anything anymore and harder weirder bad. It's just really unfamiliar to me. Now I feel that I've had enough experience to say it is bad. This is I point out that I have a problem that I can't say David and know who were who I'm talking to. So David sparkes. You're still going to be David but David McDonald. We're GONNA to. I'm going to call you Doctor David. Because you've got a doctor in front of your name and that will separate the two of you for the listener. How does that sound I can live with that? Okay so Sadako. David not not regular David. Dr David Guest David. You said that the MAC was sort of your way into the apple ecosystem and I was thinking. Yeah that's the same for me. I remember I did you know twenty years ago. They weren't but what what came next. So you got the MAC from this job. You're getting used to it. What was sort of the next step into the water? The next step was about not quite a year later or maybe a little more than a year later. I got my first ipod. Which was an IPAD. Air To Right when that came out and I was trying to use an IPAD air to and MAC book pro and my android phone for about a month and a half before I was able to upgrade that. And then my first iphone was the iphone six plus and there were a couple of reasons that I was okay. Moving to iphone at that time. The some of the things that I really liked about android like the the notifications and the third party keyboards in the larger display all came around that same time and then also that was. I think around the time that airdrop was starting to be supported in various devices and that is a total game. Changer if you have enough other apple devices so that was my first my first iphone. I still have it somewhere. Casually will use it like a microphone into it and use it as kind of a handy portable recorder. So you really haven't been on the platform that long but sounds like you've really jumped on it. You said earlier that you. You've always been a nerd What were the things you lost going from? Android to the IRS operating system. That you that you still miss if there are any I I still think android does a lot better with notifications. Ios has gotten better at that I like the options for customizing the home screen on Android a lot too and the the biggest one. I guess I still really miss. I really liked the way android separates the idea of your home screen from your list of all your APPs. I think that is a very good thing to do. Because as as we know you know most of the time we know where like maybe ten to twelve of our APPS are on our phone screens and everything else we search for I would just as soon have everything automatically not show up on the home screen at all but just a couple of things that I know that I want to have on the home screen and everything else can live and just an alphabetical list of all my apps which is basically what what android does and I. I really like

The Future of Professional Relationships with Andy Lopata

"Does the professional relationship strategist actually do? I guess the answer is pretty much in the title but I'll work with organizations and individuals within those organizations to help them look how the professional relationships they build Com charge their business And Charlie career If you look at most to the challenges and the skill sets the leaders and Successful business people focus on that that that powered by relationships whether you're looking at change management leadership in itself business growth. You can list challenges and pretty much. Everyone could be made easier. I'm better if you have the right connections with the right people in the right place and strong relationships with them but we tend to leave that to chance and what I try and do is encourage those people to think about the most strategically. Well if you're asking someone to do something that will involve change or is uncomfortable. You WanNa be asked by some on you actually like you've got to lock them in that. Yes I would do that for you because we have a relationship at some point down the track on my need to ask you to do something. And it's equipped Park Roy. Something really struck me Back in January I was Speaking events event organizers before Mytalk I listened to the opening plenary session and it was a lady called name. Ray Who's the COO of I make switched? One of the biggest event organizers in the world. They run you know mixed they run events of fifteen thousand twenty thousand people in in Las Vegas And in Frankfurt and non Emory was talking about how they making their event sustainable and she had three key points in. The second point was collaboration and she threw out the talk. She talked about the different stakeholders she needed to have on board in order to make the event sustainable. And I since I had the chance I rushed out. I got to the slides and I created a brand new slide for my presentation listing stakeholders and the point I made is you had in the started with the team. But she didn't say the team it wasn't the IMAX team. It was they Finance team the sales team the delivery team so you had all the teams with an I. Max You had all the different suppliers so you had. The people that build exhibition stands the transportation on ground level to cleaners to the cleaners. Caterers You had the clients and bring the clients on the journey and I listed about twelve or fifteen of just from my notes from the talk and and my opening to my presentation that morning and it's become the opening this new presentation. Now anyway was what's the one thing that's going to make your life easier in bringing all of those stakeholders forward and it's professional relationships strong relationships on and I had a quote from now lamb. Ris At the end of that which said If you have your partners on board you multiply your impact. So that's what I try and help people and I think people don't recognize the power of professional relationships will go into more detail but we think networking is. I have connect with you on Lincoln sidewalk and his whole story around that you actually for years were known as Mister Network But you start to move away from this. So is networking now a dirty word networking word and I've always said that if I could find the replacement for it then I'll make my fortune I. It's it's not as dirty words it used to be Two thousand eight changed that you know when when people started losing their jobs linked in activity might experience absolutely spiked People were maybe on it but weren't really using it. Two Thousand Eight nine sort of sea change as people either looking for new job or felt their jobs under threat And I saw massive change. In the way people engage with networking from that point to the point way up before the crash I was at an event for women in technology. I did the bravest thing I've ever done in my life and I've parachuted and jumped so on abseiled. I put my hand up and asked a question of a panel An event could women technology where they were one hundred ninety nine women in the room where man and I wasn't even in technology I ask the panel about the the difference for a woman to a man networking corporate space. Because at the time I was moving from running a network for small businesses and knowing that I wanted to move into working with corporates and one by one. Shut me down They said you know we don't do that. We don't have time to go to the POB after work. We manipulate Everything that they said about networking was negative. Even though everything I would define networking is was represented in advice. They gave presentations One year two years later I was at an event for another women's event. It was European professional women's network. I'm one of the speakers of hundred fifty women in the ordinances time. How many of you think networking is important? Your career every hand went up. That was a huge change in a short period of time. So I don't think networking is as dirty word as it was in the you know before. Two thousand eight having said that it still misperceived misunderstood undervalued. It still seen as a soft skill is seen as a sales tool a saint something for junior levels. And it's it's all of those things and none of those things And and the reason for my shift from a focus on networking to a focus on professional relationships of which networking forms a part Is the I was getting pigeonholed into how to work a room You know my friend. Susan Susan Rohan wrote the book how to Work Room probably thirty years ago. Now it. It's a word is a phrase that's really stuck in the popular vernacular and we do need to know how to make the most of networking events but they set tiny percentage of what I do and when you talk about professional relationships conferences and events are just one tool. And I've been preaching that message for a long time but I think it took the shift a wife and talking about networking and talking about relationships for people to get that then. If you want to build professional relationships you can at how networking events and conferences. Sit into your took

"Eight thirty one apples attempted distressed red disrupt the gaming industry as we know it debuts today apple arcade will be available across all devices for just about five Bucks a month but is it a game platform a subscription service or a game store Dan Ackerman has seen its senior managing editor for computers and gaming and he's taken apple arcade for a spin he joins us live this morning on the KCBS ring central news line so Dan what is it. it's a way for apple to take control of some of the action that's happening that mobile game space you go to the apps store now people download a lot of free games you know candy crush style games they want you to pay a little extra to get extra lines the bonuses or watch a bunch of ad so they're saying you know what give us five dollars a month will pick a hundred awesome games and give you like Netflix style unlimited access to and just trust us we're gonna curate this for you did talk a little bit if you will about the market here in your you've you get on a bart train or sit in airports have boarding lives use hill a lot of people playing games on their mobile devices is it as big as it looks. it is especially because they get you one for free they call this the freemium where the pay to play model the game three don't worry about it and then as soon as you start playing but if you want to go to the next level it's the it's two dollars a five dollars or by a hundred starts for twenty dollars and that's how they make the money from these wells who currently end up spending a lot more than they think through these micro transactions the web application works is they say don't worry about that don't worry about see ads or pop ups or anything just we'll take care of it all all the games there's no extra fees and you can download them and that way Dan is and also another of the big differences here is the fact that you can play these games on different screens but it's still basically the same experience. it's interesting because apple control so much of that ecosystem that walled garden of these games are going to work on your iPhone I started today with I was thirteen look at later to my thought I had for that update comes out and then a little bit later on Max and IMAX your math books and even apple TV if you have that hook up your big screen TV and you can use Xbox. rollers with so it's it's very transportable which is a concept I see a lot of companies moving into electronical stadium that's coming out that's roughly similar in that way and roll these divisive fight pause the game on my iPhone and pick it up later on the apple TV or the I. pad is all supposed to be seamless. that's exactly right all your progress is saved in the cloud which is of the gamers have been you know wanting for for decades in over the last five to six years we've got that a lot of game platforms so that's almost like table stakes now did to get into this what's the likelihood that this sort of situation the sort of platform program whatever you wanna call it will draw in more people who aren't typically game players. the thing you could do to try and people who sort of dabble in apple games your iPhone games we don't really get too involved or or just try it once they don't like it is I think curated for you to discover ability problem where there's so many games and apps out there for your phone and ninety nine percent of them were junkie so apple is saying much like Netflix does when they decide which shows and movies to produce and put on their service or HBO they're saying we're going to discover it for you and just give you the best of the best so you don't have to waste your time going through all this

Lakers Rumors: Jason Kidd Hired as LA Assistant to Lure Giannis in Free Agency

"Right. So the Lakers have said that they want Jason Kidd on their coaching staff to serve as a veteran assistant for Frank Vogel man to mentor Lonzo. But they may have another more ambitious reason as well. According to Steve Popper, Newsday a person familiar with the Lakers process said that kid was brought to Los Angeles to attract Janas, enter the Coon boats, who the Lakers when he becomes a free agent in two years, and the buck star could become an unrestricted free agents Janas played for kid Imma walkie for three and a half seasons beginning in his second season in the league, that's a little pipedream isn't it? Just hire good. Coach. He's about one with this, this idea if they add IMAX level player this year, and Anthony Davis via trade. That would take them out of the honest contention in two thousand twenty one they also have LeBron still. And he has a forty one million dollar player option for twenty one twenty two. So it's possible that LeBron chooses to opt out. And lead the Lakers at that time. And then they had us as there in his prime replacement, but the my issues, this is already come out this year and said he's not leaving the bucks. No, he's not. I, I don't. I don't feel. I do not feel with Yaish. Listen, there's no reason to leave the world's changed, you can make money anywhere. He's got a gray better coach in Milwaukee than potentially he'd have anywhere else. "That's right now back to original topic that was on the bio signal side. But as I started thinking more so back to an saying, this was all a quest to just try to get fit. And you know, again speaking, candidly, I think it's because I grew up as the Wimpy kid with the sand kicked in my face sort of thing, and we're often passionate about that. Which was denied to us or most dramatic growing up. Right. So I think getting fit was a response to that. And I was trying to arm myself with knowledge because also is kind of inherently lazy? I was trying to maximum bang for the buck with minimal effort. Yeah. And that's where the nutrition part kicked in. But so I eventually did it cheap. What I wanted to that. You know, sub ten percent body fat all that kind of thing. But then it made me think can that process be used for other types of wellness. What is a six pack of emotion or mental state when memory or even your spirit like look like. And that's what kind of led me to sort of that consciousness hacking area, take that same playbook, even for your mental state, your memory or emotions all those sorts of things. So what you resist that became probably, you know, coincidentally when discovered things like burning man in like two dozen forty doesn't five right? That's probably when a lot of uh setting a lot of people will have more perhaps a, quote, unquote, spiritual awakening, I guess, you know, you'll try things like meditation yoga, you know, they're our antigens all those things out there that kinda make you realize. Whoa. There may be more dimensionality to or reality than we perceive with just our naked. Mrs. Yeah. So what was that first experience for you where you said, okay. This is something where I I think I need to go deep here. I think I really need to to try and figure out my own brain. I think it was definitely a combination of early temps imitation and to be candid, I fell asleep, or my mind would just mumble. I just felt like I don't know what I'm doing. I'm wasting my time combined with you know, the first time I ever encountered things like Anthea jen's like suicide and whatnot. And those the weight in the analogy like to give is it's almost like imagine you've been watching TV or movies in black and white flat two d and suddenly you get a glimpse of an IMAX three d trailer in it's really hard to unseat that. And so that opens up your curiosity. What other types of dimensionality is out there? And maybe the notion that perhaps the way we perceive realities limited by our senses. And that there's different ways to tune those filters those antenna. Yeah, that is really something. I think about a lot in that, you know, the only things that we're actually perceiving right now is just what we. Have the toolkit? What we have the hardware to do. So. And so, you know behind me right now, there's it's not color not anything else. Like, it's something completely different. But for I can only see in unlock. And I wonder if there's more in my brain than I can tap into unlock to get like you said a difference signal a different frequency. So you believe wh- compe- people do what can they find by doing this? I mean, I think that the problem that a lot of these compounds have is they have both a recreational kind of usage and people will just have fun. And and and and there can be some damage done as well. That's why. And then also there's some people that are using it to get over fears Zayed's or to explore their own brain. Like, how does that is one navigate this world? It's always back to that old saying set and setting which is another way for saying, what is the intention that you're trying to bring to it. And. For what purpose are you trying to use these technologies because again, these are just technologies I have all technology stack of what I think of is like the consciousness hacking, stack you have, you know, the chemical ones you're going to soon have a neuro feedback and sensor based ones data AI ones. But even back to the old days, meditation is technology. That's a sort of concentration technology..

You know, what we wanted to do is everything in this game. We wanted to cut out all the fat and make it just like a core. The monster should just look like in your head. What every monster looks like. Everyone's going to have a different idea of that. But if we can create kind of the amalgamation of all of it and the most simplified like base monster that everyone can build onto that was kind of the goal. I love that. That's one of my favorite parts about sleep tight to is. This was really a true labor of love of two childhood friends who you know in the in the basement or in their after hours of their professional careers built this, this passion project together, you know, and got a. Of their friends together just for fun to make this thing. That's so cool because it's like that's what every kid says they're gonna do, and none of them do. They all just go up and get desk jobs like, that's it. All right. So I'm dying to know. You brought a cool box here with you. Yes, we brought a little gift. What's inside the box? What's. So this is our limited edition monster box and within it, there's a whole bunch of goodies on art book. There's this really awesome figuring that another one IMAX childhood buddies made with us and inside here, there's, we've only made one hundred of these, but there's all sorts of cool stuff in the box is, is ultra ultra limited edition which has the the actual kids room and whole bunch of good. He's in here and we are having a contest to win one of these. Awesome. So a big part of our game is we mentioned the first eight game modes. The last four game modes of the last four on lockable characters are each completely different ways to play the game. And so we've we, we knew that we kept this a total secret until the game launched on launch Dan. So we knew that Nintendo with our new trailer was going to be announcing these additional game modes round, but we didn't tell anyone else. And then for a launch, we held a forty hour slumber party where we had nearly fifty of our close gamer buddies. And pro gamers. We even had some NFL guys come and and everyone in their pajamas. And it was like building for its. We had beanbags everywhere, and it was just like we're doing a slumber party and everyone's going to get to play as much of the game as possible. And if you unlock a character with a new game mode, you get two premiered live on. You'll be the first week when you're an adult and you do that. It's called a bender. Well, we, we did do it in Vegas. And they were like, oh, this is perfect. That's awesome. And inserted. We pull out the pillow fort because we already do it. And so we, we raced the clock, you know, we, we knew it was by ten AM the next morning it was going to be announced, right? And so we let you know some of these gamers announced it for themselves and with the first person to premier, these different game modes, so cool. So it's it's starting to come out a lot online because you have to kind of you have to get into the game to unlock the last four characters. Right. And once you do the whole game changes, there's there's a first person shooter modem operation commando holy crap. Yeah. I mean, one of the characters Picasso he starts with like a ton of resources upfront and you get to build the ultimate pillow fort whatever you want. And then as soon as you've built everything and you're, you're ready to go night, never ends. And so it's just this endless run to see how long you can survive. It's terrifying. So we have these like mix and match modes and for CASA, what we want to do since not a lot of people have gotten him yet whoever gets the top score with the Cosso. We'll send one of these two..
