The slow is slow just a tad bit slower. Okay well anyway georgie. He's a wonderful player. Tremendous play thing illinois some some would say illinois lessees decided to start slow watson a little bit. Some might say that might be. That might be something that you might not like about illinois but we like them this year. They're in the top ten for both of us. And they're gonna compete at the top of the league alongside of wisconsin and iowa maybe michigan state. But yeah should be a fun team and And the most hyped season for line. I basketball in a good while one last thing. Do you remember my guy austin. I do remember your austin hutcherson. It did a story seems like forever ago i was. I was on a weekend trip to a bachelor party. I i remember riding it from a hotel room before we went to cubs game in chicago. Interesting story division three player and he was working out in new york with ron. Baker noah von lay and some other former or current nba players and ron baker. They didn't notice guy hoop and so they're like man. Where do you play. And he told them and they're like where is that he was like. It's a division three school. They're like dude. Why are you in division three. You can play division one basketball. And so he had some highlights on youtube started sending them out with the help of his trainer. Some coaches started asking for full game too so the sending usb drives that had full games on it next thing you know he's got offers from notre dame from creighton illinois sign with illinois set out last season but is eligible this season and by all accounts had a really good year away from competitive basketball great athlete great shooter. I'm not sure what kind of role he'll have on this team. But he's an interesting story that if he does prove to be impactful you'll hear it on broadcast over and over and over again. Just like the duncan robinson still correct. That's exactly it was going say not that he is the next duncan robinson but if he is really really good the duncan robinson stuff is going to be mentioned pretty much every single game that yes. I keep. Keep an eye on that. There's another potential weapon there for For the align. I and we are now as we record this wrapping it up. We are twelve days from the start scheduled. Start of the season. Starting to get some cancellations here there. But i got i got the pay. I'm keeping optimism. Hopefully illinois good to go on november twenty five shots.

"Lot of parents. Of course. Remember when Bobby Smith was a defensive coach coordinator down in st. Louis with the Rams and so there's a lot of connections there. They work that area very hard and have had a lot of success here in recent years getting some kids out of them know, Illinois, Missouri frequently, you know Clash over the kids trying to get him to come either way and it kind of goes Ebbs and flows with a success of the programs, but I think loving his staff of made a concern birth Effort in Saint Louis to to get the players they need out of there. Brian may be a tough question for you to answer. I know you love sports. You want to see the kids playing? How did the people along the Big Twelve feel about football returning when they're kind of the last one standing along with the Pac-12 to get back into to college football. How do people generally feel about the Big Ten coming back to play tonight boss? Well, I think they they were upset a little bit because I thought you know the Big Ten in a way kind of got in front in front of its own message or missed stepped on their message initially. They didn't you know, they initially announced a schedule. We were going to play a schedule with, you know, just big ten games only as it turned out and then then they came out a few days later and said they were going to hold off on false. It's for the rest of the time and and then we didn't hear anything for a while and then people kind of made their own assumptions and I think if they had to do it over again the conference might with their messaging on this, you know, they suck. The cart before the horse and then had to go back and say no we're not playing and then here they are a few weeks later saying yeah, we are going to play so that that caused a lot of I don't know people just got upset over the the back and forth on it, you know, it was either wait like the SEC did or wait like the big 12 did a little bit see how it plays out. They felt maybe I think most fans thought. They were a little premature with their situation. That was a tough spot for Kevin Warren to be and I mean he comes in on the heels of as you know, Dan probably the one of the most powerful guys in Collegiate Sports in any sports in Jim Delany, and obviously he has to deal with this cold weather out of the right out of the gun in the spring with the Big Ten tournament and the basketball season and and all of that happen, so it's not, you know, not his fault in that sense, but I was just tough for the league to to get their story out the way they wanted it and as it turned out the testing was improved the Chancellor's and the president's came through and eventually said, hey we can do this month. Pearly Illinois has been on the Forefront. The university has with a saliva test that my daughter goes to the U of I can get tested twice a week and have results in less than 12 hours, you know, and so they've really mastered that not only in Illinois but in other places and so I think once they deemed it was safe they got going and I think that they can they can go forward now but I'm fans were getting a little anxious. I have to be honest and that you know, they were looking at these other offices going. Okay now can we get a team in the in the in the college football playoff? Are we going to be a part of anything? How is this spring thing going to work? You know we going to be able going to be starting games in January. There was a lot of banks there, but I think once they settled on this late October start, they're still able to be a part of things Ohio State in particular at the top of the national Consciousness as far as football a big fan and so I think people are happy now it's getting started. It was you could tell there was a definite step lift in the step of people around champagne and then around the Big Ten when they said yeah, we're going to start we've birth Date we're going to do it. You did lead me into my next question. How is testing going for the student-athletes at Illinois? It's going great. You know, they they test every day. I know they've got about life as a tighter bubble as you can considering, you know, their their students and a lot of the students are doing remote learning at Illinois most of the classes are that way. So they've been able to keep a pretty tight rein on things and you know to get into the oven Center for instance where basketball practices. I mean, you gotta jump through all kinds of Hoops to even get in to watch so young players get tested every day. They've had pretty you know, pretty limited issues with it. And you know, I think again being in Illinois, we're in a great spot here because the methods they've come up with to test and wash results and Screen everybody has been really really effective and final question not to put you on the spot, but I get to put you on the spot so eight games. What do you think? How good can the dog? Be this year. Well, it can be very good, you know the schedule they do the the two games they play. Well, one of the crossover games is Ohio State, of course at home. That's obviously a fax order. You do play the other one at Rutgers that's certainly in the empty stadiums. Who knows that home-field Advantage is is gone as far as that goes and we're going to see that I think tonight, you know family, you've got eighty thousand Badger fans wearing red. They're doing the fourth quarter jump around it's a it's a really intimidating atmosphere and that won't be there. I mean it's going to be an empty stadium and so long I think that certainly work still annoys Advantage. They've got the experience on offense and the offensive line secondary is deep and experienced still some questions with a defensive line, but you know, you've got Wisconsin you've got, you know, Soda Purdue those are all toss-up games that certainly you know, they they beat Purdue last year. This is a team that can finish over five hundred and maybe A couple of games above if everything works the way you think it can with this team, but I'll paraphrase all that or parentheses all that damn by saying, you know as you found out with the Cardinals issue never know you never know. You know, what happens if there's a cobra. Brake what happens if this happens or that happens? It's been so unpredictable all year that you know in most normal situation you might have a clue as to where you're headed. But but I think optimistically they are they have a potential here to to have a really really good season. You do such a great job. Can't wait to listen in tonight and thank you so much for your time and good luck this season. Thank you Dan. Really appreciate you and thanks for having me on any time. You got it. That's Prime Barnard..

"Made progress last year. We were able we were 6:15 and I think we're stronger football team right now. We lost a few guys, but for the most part I best players are back and we've added quite a few players. So we're excited about seeing exactly how we feel into the landscape in twenty-twenty the man that called that game and so many great moments in 2019 Brian Barnhart from the middle of the field for James McCord with four seconds left, Wisconsin 23, Illinois, 21, the Badgers have no time outs. They can't stop it. But port for the wind in the area it is Absen pagi Saya want 2423 right down the middle a letter saying happy miles on the field busy down. There was cops around 3rd and 10 for the Illinois 45 back to pass lewerke Rose considered tempted picked off by you. They're running off that line 4013. It's going to be a touchdown touchdown Cindy Brown touchdown off my goodness takeaway, touch the Holy Smokes second-and-goal at the five twenty three seconds left the Illini looking at her birth. Hurry, what's not a second? Slab? Seventeen seconds left 15 seconds left. Down to 10 Peters rose right looks to the ends of Rob touchdown. He's got he's got a touchdown song quiz 5 Seconds touchdown, Illinois. Peters walked and looked and looked and he finally found Daniel Barker dead man's own touchdown, Illinois and they lead 3634 went 5 seconds left in the Illini are five seconds away from birth. Let's go look at the marching Illini holding a party in the corner where the Illini faithful in that corner off to our left. That's the voice of Brian Barnhart and he'll be behind the game tonight. The voice of the Illini is they take on Wisconsin Big Ten football is back and always great division with Brian. I wasn't sure Brian that we would have big ten football club. Great to hear your voice. I hope you're doing well. Your family is safe and healthy. And are you ready to go? Are you ready for Big Ten football? Well, thank you Dan for having me on with you. It's great to visit and catch up. Thanks for all your great work. You do with the Cardinals always enjoy your work all summer long and I know this year was a little bizarre for you as well. And yeah, it's been bizarre this fall. I've my wife has been trying to find things to do because on Saturday afternoons first time in twenty years. I'm not you know, not at a football stadium in September, you know, and I kept thinking man that the weather's fantastic we ought to be playing football and took was really really hard and then it was even harder I think and you can appreciate this, you know, you're watching other games being played and your conference and your team's not playing and that makes it extra hard. So yeah, even though it's late October and the leaves are changing or about gone and then we're going to be have some cold couple of months here football. I'm just happy to be doing games of any kind anywhere. However, they want us to do it. How are you going to age? Doing the games how our teams around the Big Ten going to be doing these games. Well, it kind of varies from place to place tan, Ohio State interestingly announced their radio crew is not going to any game as far as Road games. And of course each team has eight games plus one depending on where they finish in the standings. So for home games will be in our home booth. There won't be any fans that down the big ten games. So that'll help with the four games will at least be in person basically limited to five people in our booth for home games and basically go to the Press Box and stay there and do the game and go home for the road games. So for Wisconsin coming up tonight will be actually in person. We're not traveling with the team. They left yesterday. Normally they fly and that's about a 40-minute flight. Normally this time they drove seven buses up there to keep everybody socially distant and to and to get the team up I'll drive up tomorrow after my car today after my radio show and and then do the game, of course tonight up in yep. Medicine and we'll just show up again in the booth get our credential get temperature check go in. They told us to stay in the booth and not come out unless you need to use the restroom and that's basically what we'll do a couple of road games Nebraska. I think we're still deciding what to do with that. That's about an eight-hour 8-hour nine-hour drive. We'll see how that goes Rutgers. We're definitely doing in studio, which I know you're familiar with with the Kardashians. Oh, yeah. It's a it's a different animal that's for sure in terms of and as you can imagine a lot of people in st. Louis alumni base in st. Louis for the fighting Illini is vast. It's big change. They're excited about what Lovie Smith has coming back this year. The transfer Pole portal is big for the fighting Illini and last year was a stepping stone in many ways in a positive direction, What can they expect this year out of the fighting Illini in the unique assist if that's the right word to describe it but unique circumstances of this football season. Well, absolutely Danna the expectations were pretty. Yep. Coming in even if you go back to the original schedule had three home games scheduled. I think Illinois State and Bowling Green in Connecticut that they were expected to win. They were going to get off to a good start some people thought based on home of the Big Ten original schedule. They could start as good as as well as five and O or six a no as it turns out obviously those non-conference games are gone. They're starting at Wisconsin whose name will power in the Big Ten West and you've got Ohio State at home on the schedule. So I think the the expectations are still there for a good season here in this in this short season, but they were they were pretty high because you got 25 seniors. They had 21 seniors combine the previous two years. So this group has grown up they've matured they've taken their lumps and this was I know Levi sure that his staff are pointing to a really good solid nice bowl season in contend for the Big Ten West title as everything played out. We'll see if that happens now with all this off. But you're right about the transfer portal Josh imatorbhebhe came in last year from USC. He was huge had some big catches during the course of the year. You've got Luke Ford who's a transfer from Georgia in Carterville, Illinois, which I know you're probably familiar with their he's a highly-touted young man coming in from Georgia could not play last year had to sit out. So those two guys are just tremendous rash favor or tied in and Luke Ford's case Kamari Thompson came in from Missouri Hightower Bryan Hightower from Miami of Florida, but I would say the receivers are the deepest they've been dead in quite a while. You have a second-year quarterback transfer and branded Peters who had a just got better as the year went on last year and so offensively with the Special Teams being solid. Those are two areas Choice really strong in starting the year and that's why there's a lot of optimism Brian Barnhart boys had the Illini my guest. How is La be done in terms of recruiting and getting into Missouri and specifically Saint Louis. How do you log? Gone, it's going pretty well. Of course one of his assistant coaches. Was there from from Trinity Catholic that that came up and joined the staff and and you had good solid young coach. And of course George Williams came out of there from from st. Louis and they've been able to get some guys from that area especially here in recent years with a transition. I know Missouri when through getting into the southeast conference and then the transfer of coaches the change there that was made with with Gary pinkel and so forth and so they've been able to make some inroads and a lot of folks a.

Yes Sir I agree with you and I think you know what plays a factor in this is not necessarily age. It goes back to what I said earlier. It's all about results. What can you bring to the table? How can you help University Illinois Football Program? You know what I mean. What can you do to help the coaches around you and the staff members around you player personnel on and on so I think that's my main goal. Right now is bringing results the table, and then of course revamped that brand in spreading the brand of myself, and then the legacy already at hand the University of Illinois. I Like I say nothing greater. That's good to hear and as an ally fan I like the talk that way, but do you have any advice to pass along to two young women or people have probably they might be interested in pursuing a career in sports like you are the fact of joining coaching staffs and starting to build a career at a young age. Why would be fine. Fine, which love. And when you're trying aside, passion and I, guess once to do five. It figure out if you can do that without the plate. And, if you can do that without getting paid, you found your passion, but if you're like I, don't think I can do that without getting paid I don't think might be your passion. Keep trying odd number. Two is going to be continue or build your in-person linked in I. Know a lot of us are linked in, and we're connecting social media, but like I said earlier again with the zoom calls and things like that. It's a little different when you start seeing people face to face. So continue to build a in person linked in a work at this time pandemic, because most people are on their laptops, so start reaching out start sending emails started trying to figure out how the set of those ten minute phone calls because all you need is ten minutes right. The last question for you is just you know we're not sure if there's going to be a college football season. Obviously, everything's being done virtually. There's a big story today just about what a what a difficult time it is for for. Because there's a lot of high hopes for for the program this year right now, all I can say is they are working their butts off six feet apart of course. Santa taste sanitation to at were all contested almost every other, not every other week, but every week like it's up there. We're like you know making it. You need to wear masks. You need to be Coronas, free corona safe, and if you're around, somebody has not taking the covert nineteen seriously you to get away from..

"I was like way Whoa okay you. 'cause me going in. I knew I wanted to be in college football. I got the job. You know what I mean like are never thought about making history and I just want to get to the job. Do the Best I can do and my bud for everyone around me. For you to to be a woman in the sports, and the. On staff. I would assume that you're always breaking barriers. There's not a lot of women that are part football programs. Throughout. The country so the idea of of starting a new job. You're always going to be confronted with that. I agree with you and look I'm hoping in the near future. You know it, it's not. Of Normal when a woman is hired right in football, position or anything like that I just want people to feel like. Oh, she was hired okay. Just keep it in the norm. Well. It sounds like that was the process and that was that was what happened with you with coach Lovey Smith I. I'm interested because the article came out. In the Tribune just a couple weeks ago about? As many universities around this country face the fact that they are not diverse when it comes to equity and inclusion, football staffs across the board. Don't reflect the student body. The athletes and they're primarily white. When you see the that coach, Lovey Smith is the outlier I mean coach Lovey Smith at one of the most diverse staffs in all of college football. What does that mean to you as somebody? WHO's joining the staff? That means a lot to make beautiful melting pot as call it and I think coach Smith he started something again like no other team. University has done so far he starting something news, and making that the new normal, making it diverse automate and I think with us in just being in the time that we are in now far as you know talking more about. About, race and being open about it I think this is a great step. Be a part of because with. It's kind of like. He sat down on I in a zoom call, but we were open to you. Know say was on our mind how he felt and no one was judging anyone in that moment and I think again it goes back to that. That beautiful melting pot where all coming in from different backgrounds, all different races shades of colors, and that's just what makes it even greater and especially when you know come into the coaching form of it, you're coaching players that are coming from all. Look all across the nation from different backgrounds. You know what I mean so I think again. It's just playing A. A part into the new normal making it happen. You know a lot of coaches. They talk about it. They don't make it happen. They're not about it right. It's all about actions and results in college football now I would imagine at the high school level and the State of Illinois, but also just around the country in your experiences in Texas. It was similar. Probably a lot of dudes and I would assume a lot of white guys right, but when when it comes to coaching in in Illinois and you have to find a way to relate to these coaches and to to make sure that the University of Illinois and the coaches in the state of Illinois are on the same page, or at least you know you can have good relationships with them..

"You're welcome. Other sports continue to wrestle with the pandemic. There might not be a college football season. The start date has been pushed back and mostly division. One schools have committed to playing in conference, only limiting travel beyond Cova, though there's continuing tension between the schools and the athletes when it comes to racial equality, diversity and inclusion or issues that many coaching staffs are confronting, but at the. The University of Illinois. That's not an issue coach. Lovey Smith is celebrated for having one of the most diverse staffs in the country, and that includes his latest higher Ashton Washington Ashen becomes the first black woman to be part of the football program in the you've of is one hundred thirty year. History Washington is the director of relations for Illinois football and she joins us now. While come to reset, hello, hello, how are you? I'm good. Thanks for joining us and congratulations on the role. Tell us more about it. New Director of High School, Relations. Yes so it's pretty much what says there title The key part of my job. Our high school coaches across the state and outside of the state, so the highest will coaches are accused me going. Assumed that has a lot to do with recruiting and and having conversations about trying to get some of those athletes to come to come to campus in Champaign Urbana. Yes look getting. One of the most beautiful campus in the nation I. Look I I gotTa bring them in. What was your initial reaction to being brought in? Tell us how this all came. About about you being hired three part of coach Lovey Smith Staff. I'd say it all goes back to coach price. Coach Joe Price he's meant a mentor for me..

"Because this is going to be interesting to see how pictures are going fair in this type of season, let's talk with the South side. There's been a lot about the rebuilding of this team. But WHOA did they put on a display against the cubs over the weekend and I think every white sox fan, and maybe even some cubs fans we're. We're talking about drinking the KOOL aid when it comes to what we can expect from the Chicago White Sox in the trunk aided season, I think the fact that the cubs former prospect white sox possible star Aloi menace. Hit the Grand Slam. But they have Louisa. Robert is considered a rookie of the year candidate in center field. You'RE GONNA love the way he plays. He's got a lot of power. He really covers centerfield well. They have a lot of young players. You've got Tim Anderson just keeps getting better and better you on Mocatta. He has a MVP potential. You have the veteran. Jose Abreu, but I think when they added the different free agents when the added does Kyko and And the big one was yeahs Mardi. Growl with added him an all star Catcher with all star Catcher James McCann. You set yourself up real well, and you look Lido. Really you know. He's come into his own, so there's a lot of good things they can put it together, or you know what they could struggle. We don't know they. They definitely rebuild their into the next stent. Real Quick Nick Magical, so you're gonNA make the team. I don't know you know what that could be the cost you know. It's service time issue with him. And that's that's the problem. They could put him down for a couple of days into Texas. bring them up and then they get another year out of him. I. Don't even talk about that as a fan that. Annoys me the way they do that. Because we would like to see the first round and the former first rounder playing baseball for the white sox on on the north side, the team looks very similar a a new manager of course in Rossi but but what are the issues with the with the cubs? Because I I couldn't even tell you besides Kimbrel. WHO's closing? What's going on with that bullpen? It's totally revamped bullpen. Really when you look at it, so you know th the here's the thing though. When they lost Jose Catanha to that thumb injury that put their starting certain rotation into a tizzy. Kyle Hendricks will open tomorrow than they have darvish than they have. Tyler TAT would would be third or fourth guy will be John Lester. And, so that's interesting that he's. He's in this spot. At Alec, Mills will be your fifth starter. It's GonNa. Be Interesting to see how David Ross has to maneuver this. Because remember just they've changed the rules. Each pitcher has to face three minimum batters. So you can't go for righty lefty type? Time right now to make that change of course, because you're going to need as much flexibility as possible especially when it comes to Cova and things like that, but the good thing is with the D. H. it allows the managers Nafta. About you know putting in a player for a pitcher for banning, so they kind of help that situation somewhat. But the crazy rule which I think is bizarre is if it goes into extra innings the tenth inning. The team is at bat has a runner at second base to start the inning yeah. There's going to be so many changes..

"We'll talk with Ashton Washington the first woman to be part of the football staff at the University of Illinois but I. It's opening day for Major League Baseball and it's the first time ever opening days and threatened by a snowstorm. But sunny skies aren't the only thing different about today's games. First thing you'll notice no crowds, and of course, the constant threat covid nineteen with us to talk about it all Cheryl Ray Stout wbz sports contributor, so you have seen these games in person. Yup, what is it like to be in the stadium when there's no crowd whatsoever? It is so Erie Justin. The stadiums feel like the darker, too because you. The people that stand you don't have that extra lighting. there's some noise pipe in. You could hear the chatter from the dugouts. You could hear the crack of the Bat. You could hear the ball admits. It's it's. It's very odd. The cubs been using the regular announcer regular organised. The white sox used recorded music and recorded or organise staff members during the PA. But it's very odd feeling and. The national anthems have been recorded. They have the seventh inning. Stretch is recorded, but the cubs gave us information just now that they will have somebody live during the national anthem. And they will have healthcare workers mayor lightfoot governor, Pritzker and Ryan San Antonio I. That's the only thing otherwise. It's very very weird. I would just assume just thinking about that. The players about the players did they talk about the factor playing in front of no crowd. Hartford some of them is that they don't have even their families their. Their whole lives, they've always been able to have their families especially. Opening Day you got the White Sox have cardboard cutouts in the stands. The trying to get the energy could be interesting, because energies usually given to the players through the fans, and that's what's going to be missing now. Well, let's talk about the cubs and the white sox. They open up tomorrow. One of the weird things about baseball right now. Is that many of the players? Are Showing up on injury lists without you know without an actual specified injury, and that's because of the way that they're classifying cove it, but when you just look at each team's roster, there seems to be you know. Players left and right that are recovering or in the midst of trying to get a a negative test..

Steve Kerr has a really great story. I want to hear more from Steve. Kerr. I was like Martinez really wanted to hear more about the ninety eight bull did did. They're the they're the most famous thought a bag grape at all. It's just funny because like the way you hear more about care of. I want to hear about Luc. Longley G Australian basketball player. I want to hear about Tony. Kukushkin Steve Kerr. Yeah you know what I wanted to see. I wanted to see a lot of diva work. Our Boy Longley and that one game that we sold to the to tip offs of ninety eight series and blahdy. I'm a huge fan of the tips. That just go horribly wrong. Both guys start like swiping like a billion times missed the first and then like anytime the guy wins the two whereas feeder actually still on the ground in his hand is by his shoulder. Because you know it's real big like those are real big band better jumping because look at each other like I really don't want to jump the other guys don't job and then if someone does just mad at the other guy took a big man. Code Tipo. Could you just like all right just like give me? The ball is kind of amazing that that's the way you start basketball games. And no one's ever stopped at the. Is there a better way? I guess I don't know if there is like just there's no need to. I guess you don't really. It's not really like it's that big of a problem but it is kind of funny that check either but as you know like if you take. Officials are very bias. That's why that's why that's always the reasoning. As far as I know because I've asked like guys who were headed officiating. And all that stuff why they don't do jump balls like the pros. Do and the reasoning is always that that officials don't throw it which is hilarious. Think about there. That's why we do the possession heroes. Because we don't trust the guys can throw a ball straight up in the air but we do trust that they can throw a ball straight up in the air four feet much coordination there but.

"You know one and done guys like the big twelve in. Acc An SEC. Do and so. You're looking at a different caliber player. That has been coming to the big ten recently as opposed to see you know. Say Twenty years ago so anytime. National Championship. If you look back I'm telling you there's at least two to three sure-fire NBA guys even the Virginia Z. That that one in overtime against sexist TECH THEY HAVE PROS ON T. You have to have guys that can step up and make plays into games because when you're going against a j right or Misha chef ski in a NCAA titles situation. You're not gonNA out coach them. You'RE NOT GONNA get lucky in and have something happen. You gotTa have guys make plays and I think that you know as Winston to me was a fantastic. Nba Are a college guard. But I don't see that transitioning to the next level it would have been great to see it. Michigan state could have broken through this year. I think they were rounding in shape. But when you look at teams like Michigan State You know take Iowa for example. Luca Garza was dominant. But would that dominance bleed over into the NCAA tournament sure because other teams could have had big APP athletes? That could have maybe stymie Luca guards a little bit better than what he saw the big ten conference so it really guys. It just comes down to former or future. Nba Players and if your program has two or three you have a very good chance away that championship. If your program doesn't if you've got one or two and you've got some guys that can kinda you know support those main those star players. Then you have a chance but if you don't have that you have that pro level talent. It's very difficult to win. Six Straight Games and AIDS. And we've seen the big ten. They've had the chances you know. Recent Times he sold. Jaren JACKSON MOUSE BRIDGES AT Michigan State team that year titus and I we were both high on them and they have what you're talking about which is NBA caliber guys with you know the the rotational a Nick Ward. Type Guide enforcer type that can come in and maybe get hard file for you or whatever it may take a tournament game but it still didn't work out As you sort of getting upset as I can continue to talk about. It is there. Is there any hope those who look at next year? Like lagarde's comes back. He's obviously had a great year but he has a chip on his shoulder doesn't win player. The Euro be top. Sorta gets those honors. Is there a chance that they're you know? Maybe Luca Garza and the big man is back next year in college basketball. Is that the hope. Is that what everyone can't be Iowa? Stephen I want get out of here back here to take. I see how he did that to come on come on. I think that you know what you're seeing now One of the things to me a program like Ohio State Program like Indiana Program even like Illinois to me. When they're rolling they have a better chance than maybe even Michigan Michigan State. And the why do I say that because when they start winning you see what I'll assume who is done in Adam Miller fouls tailored horrid and Tucker should have been wearing Illinois Jersey yet? They could work. They couldn't work that out. So when you start to see guys like this coming Illinois you start to see guys like trace. Jackson Davis GO TO INDIANA OVER LANGFORD TO GO TO INDIANA. You know these. Three programmes in my opinion would get rolling. They have even as good of ability at Michigan State of Miskin to draw former NBA players into their program with. So I guess what I'm saying is now the Illinois is starting to get better. I think Indiana is all because the starting to improve Ohio state is right there. I think Chris home is one of the most underrated coaches college basketball from indicated game and recruiting standpoint. So I think the big ten is going to be fine in the next three to five years. I'd be very surprised if the conference doesn't have a team that can break through and a national championship. I really believe that. That's what I love to hear what Stephen Stuff like that will keep you coming back on this show. You Know You keep saying that. We'll have you back regularly before we let you go your thoughts on the the name image likeness stuff floating around the NCAA. I mean I don't I don't really know how to phrase the question. Just in general the the way college basketball is trending all this Discussed not only about like players getting paid but You know what the G. League has gone on and just it feels like we're at a turning point in the course of college basketball history and whether that's good or bad depends on who you ask them how to use it. Well I see the sea needing to reform. I see them needing to be competitive with some of the competitors in the marketplace and guys let's face it. This is capitalism so the only place in the United States you'll see people that work their tail off to create millions for program. Don't see any direct monetary benefit right. They get scholarship. They get food and medical services and academic services. That's all fine and Dandy but if you take an engineer and Microsoft's or Microsoft or Google or somebody comes in and says you know what your freshman year you know we you've shown a propensity to do what we want you to do. We're GONNA give you a four year deal for one hundred twenty five thousand per year and people would be right about and Forbes magazine baby writing about it but for some reason the NC. Well I'M NOT GONNA say for some reason we know why his name says amateurism BS which it is B S and. Here's the thing. The name like the name image and likeness requires program. Spend this much additional income. They don't have to pay players. This is all this does is allow players to go out and cut their own deals. I guess what the NCAA has put in a writer in the in the the bill. That's right now. It says that the players can't wear the Jersey. They can't utilize the name of the school. The make money off their lightness name and image. Now think about that for a second. How greedy because let's think about it. There's only gonNA BE SOO players. Max Three Max per program. Top top a top power five programs then a be able to take advantage of this is not a lot of players is not it just gives them the opportunity to to be a part of capitalism so I don't get it man and whatever honestly that is such a great some the phillies will just you at the end. It's just like I give up. It's like how many times can you have about the same thing we've been here a million times. Well thank you so much for joining us. Stephen We we really appreciate you. Making time for us All the all the younger people go look up the nineteen eighty nine fine a line. I feel like the O. Five see real quick. How do you how did you feel about? Oh Five. When they're on the run would be honest with some small part of you like man. These fools can win if we couldn't even win the title like some small party is like no. I was the radio analyst for that team. So you know I think Illinois loss right at the end of Ohio State. The last regular season game. They lost their only regular season games to go undefeated with a national championship. All right all right at two thousand five t all right well the O five team to try to you know I feel like history. They they kind of like you know overshadowed you guys a little bit so all the younger people go look up the the eighty nine flying align pay them. Pay Them your respect. So appreciate Stephen Moore guys. Thanks for having of course anytime art. Thanks Stephen Bardo. He and I don't know if you caught this passing the nick. Anderson is not watch the one thousand nine hundred game against Michigan. He mentioned that that Nick Anderson you kind of hinted at it missed a block out that is that is how the. I'm not sure if you're aware of this. I don't know if our listeners are aware of this that the way Illinois lost against Michigan nineteen eighty nine was basically Michigan through elastic. Shot Nick Anderson did not blackout. On the weak side Michigan the rebound included up kind of at the Buzzer for the win then went on to win the national championship in part. Why bring that up is between that between Bardo kind of hinting at that? The me the story right now and then. The latest episodes the last dance not a great little. Stretch here for Nick Anderson but but Martinez we have to point out. The Nick. Anderson did stripped Michael Jordan and he did so in Nineteen ninety-five Nick. "The daily Illini at the university of Illinois you had a you had a red head walk into the newsroom with whom you had a profound although it perhaps briefer relationship with a red head walked into the newsroom at the daily Illini I proposed to her ten minutes later we've been married ever since but like all the way through the book and like that's really cool history's more interesting I guess image of one another mind Michael crack which each other well yeah except that when it comes time to being a writer which I'd strive for I none of my stuff is ever so I mean I get published but none of my stuff ever cells and so hi that's the other part of the the duality that entertaining is that you you found right away I mean you you just stayed with it you are determined to be successful as a writer you you hooked up with one of my absolute idols Norman Corwin at in college and I hate the fact that he became a mentor to you and you get really very cleverly weasel your way into his life and stayed friends with them to the end that's just I mean the that explains a lot both about who you are and why you're so successful because there are very few writers for electronic media better the Norman Corwin Norma was amazing because things couldn't win locker dialogue and words that I still can't figure out he you read the dictionary just for fun he would discuss Indo European word derivation with you for hours on end he was you know a real craft many people like rod Serling and Charles Kuralt Walter Cronkite and so many others call those of Mormons kids who they learn to write by listening to Norman Corwin is that more people don't know that name is is a very unfortunate well they should be they should Google and if they don't they would probably recognize some of his titles perhaps end or at least his influences as you suggest I always thought I can't I I try I pitched I work for a while with the with Minnesota opera in the Twin Cities and I wanted to do an opera of of Norman Corwin's was a call the undecided molecule which is it's like perfect for an operator it's almost a libretto as it is and and I I thought it was really brilliant but nobody nobody thought that idea was that great but I thought was really cool and I love how the it it's always designed for a great like one act opera it is also with layers of his work and Melanie is already there in the writing only enough was doing our twenty five I have as yes one night Norman Corwin and ray Bradberry who also go to the house of one of Norman's kids I've always we had dinner beforehand and and ray had considerable to a buyer during the dinner as we go on the air ray takes the position that that the country will be much better off it was run by the Walt Disney corporation after two hours I could not get him off as topic that's very funny in fact you mentioned Ray Bradbury so he it it he was from Waukegan Illinois right and I used to work at a radio station in Waukegan when I was in college and I used to drive over to get to the right decision I had to drive over the bridge where there was a little there is a like a little not quite a goalie but it was a it was a dell memes Adele and there was a and that's where the killer was in dandelion wine yeah it'll be just like so I mean Ray Bradbury again another genius that you get to have and and Harlan Ellison and Philip K. Dick and I mean who who of your idols growing up as you were as you were reading science fiction who are your idols did you never get a chance to meet that were still living by the time you got to Hollywood gosh I would have loved to have met Isaac Asimov would love to met our Clark I met a lot of really amazing geyser Richard Matheson high one block every every thanksgiving Harlan Ellison would hold a dinner and beat every maps of the rubber block you know all these amazing amazing writers Bob Silverberg and me at the kids table European in awe at giant hand and they love to talk about the work and I I realized early on because the hardest thing about writing is getting out of your own way and speaking naturally on the key and more hung out with those guys were realized that writers write the way they talk and talk the way they write it got rid of all the the the walls between them and the page latest tumble out of themselves and then on the page and while I realize that that your point of view has value that it's just talking natural a paid a lot of my old bad habits with away I just seen those amazing people and and their work I love this quote you talk about Norman Corwin who had been sort of informally blacklisted of our S. dissociation so during the ETS the McCarthy period and you write job in that he said to you when he spoke with these days which was rare he said radio had been like this great horse that it carried me very far very fast and was suddenly shout a shot out from under me and I can I can I just I can't believe that that that was the end with the of this amazing career he had had of producing such memorable work which is still available online and people can go listen to many of those productions that are still available and for free yeah it is so the examinee is stop at the news of the height of the holiday he was they waited on as you probably know this because I don't know or so wells in our job where he was when be they happened there was asked to write a drama to commemorate it was aired on all three networks with that and in one small Rachael ray channels available to paint on bases prior work top of the bench where he was he could client out of it to the point where you worked on lust for life that movie hero books but it never quite came back to the same level and it despite that there was never a hint of bitterness in the and and and and never any any anger in a business grace that was as equanimity of spirit I come through some hard times before beating him and thought he could go through all that lose everything and come back with a gentle to spirit that that humble me I had no right to be upset about anything and and you had your suspects so I mean you you had spent some time as a as an entertainment writer you have had some you kept finding these steady gigs they were paying well and you were enjoying travel in interviewing celebrities and you were you were finding a place and and then the it would seem like one thing after another sometimes we know five floors above you decisions were being made by executives that would take away everything just as you thought it was getting going and then you get with some hot spot you fall into writing for for he man let's start there so how how do you explain the story of how you end up you really start the whole career I think a lot of ways that it gets modeled after the guts that it took for you and the talent and everybody could everything converging together for you to end up becoming a a staff writer for he man now I I've been a journalist before that and and if you've been with them look my own career and often say that the car writers or any artists careers he served them and not quite accurate it's the stamina the salmon Teman Teman peace families sees them and kind of hammered home of seventy seven yeah work with actually go and so having led by her as a journalist and you know I thought well hang on I know animation writer so with that that's about all I do this in the courts all turned to smoke because you want to create a competitor by a comma sample I write a script up said in with no agent no background I can't think I called the the school for the internet came along Google the informational I cried confirmations that I I I just got a call what the producers there I didn't get his name he man all you harmony dell I'll put you through that's the guy the guy you have found your own way of social engineering which I totally love you were you were you would learn how to you would learn how to play on that field because that's how you got into Corwin's class to which I thought was brilliant the same time but I don't think you're going to do with the idea of them to the masses I would want to be masters program I I I I I I I look into it I I take my master's graduation hi hi my name is of the program for the legislation I for use a master's degree I showed up with the captain now yeah do you do what you gotta do yeah I I sent an email I sent off a release form of a letter and did everything wrong as an agent and the call back to my surprise with a we can't buy this because we already have watchmen for reading and for meeting and sold the story and suddenly I wrote a script I wrote two more and then they said listen Rodham money for freelance assignments what do you want to come on staff this is completely counterintuitive right and I yeah that's what my my first regular job the filibuster weeks working for collation studios right he man and always is so much fun to be involved with that and and you loved the idea of world creation that was kind of your first four eight into a total and complete world creation that would lead eventually to Babylon five I mean the thing perhaps for what your best known but it was and I say that perhaps because it depends on who you talk to but but that that was that's a that's a skill and you you brought to it a real integrity that said it's not just about getting through the next script whatever we have to say you were creating a show Bible you were you were were it was specially when you came around to doing she rock where you really felt like this had to have there had to be there with this had to be a treatment like an ethical treatment of who these characters were what the flaws were in order for people to be able to relate to them what's funny brown writers write for two reasons either to celebrate what they had in order to experience what they never had so growing up in that environment but no ethical center always moving right thank you for coming up cleaning community unethical community it became like white hot force in my head going up was but as a kid I often have dreams that we always have the same city a same dream dream city made of the places I lived in before and that a living thank you very much and then the cult again I was drawn to ethical structures strong to communities that's why I go I'm Dennis sensei for Netflix this does do a show that said we.
