"He's available they might pick him up other news. That happened outside of players that got picked up for future reserve contracts in the national football league was the fact that ike hilliard the wide receivers coach of the steelers he interviewed for the detroit. Lions offensive coordinator position and the detroit. Lions shows anthony lynn as their offense. According to which means that hilliard will be returning to the pittsburgh steelers. That's good news because when you think about two thousand and nineteen it was when darryl drake passed away at training camp at saint vincent college so then they had to have raised. Sherman fill in an interim basis. And then this year in twenty twenty. They picked up. I kill yared a got him from washington you you would like to see some continuity being built there. It's good news for hilliard. The he was even thought of for the offensive coordinator position and that's good news for his career. But for the pittsburgh steelers and in two thousand and twenty one. It's good to have him back the last piece of news before we get to. The main crux of this episode is that it is being rumored. This is reported from jerry. Dulack of the pittsburgh post gazette. He states at marquees. Pouncey is being rumor to retire that he is supposedly telling some of the veteran players on the steelers that he's probably done after eleven seasons and you have to ask. What does this mean for the steelers. What does this mean for their approach in the off season if he is retired now ramon foster who played with marquees pouncey for ten years He knows very very well. They're great friends. He went on twitter and said he doesn't think that this is true but if it is true what does this mean for ben rothlisberger. How are they going to approach the draft. How are they going to approach free agency. What is the planet center is it just. Jc has an offer. My i hope not but you know what this ties in perfectly with the title of this episode net is is the steelers super bowl window. Really shut because everyone that you listen to things that they're done and i get it. I understand why you think that people don't remember the eleven team they remember the one for six in the last six games. That's the team they remember. i get. it's a last thing that is on your mind. Ben rothlisberger throwing four interceptions in a wildcard game against the cleveland. Browns at heinz field is the last thing you remember. Heck i bet if you went up and down the street and saw steeler fans and said hey did the steelers win the division this year. Yeah i would hope that a lot of them would know but there are probably some day. I don't even remember this team's awful because they did win the division they were the afc north champions in but it just goes to show you that people forget quickly but the thoughts of the steelers being done. I mean when i say done and when i say that they are i'm trying to think of a better way to where this they're not going to be actually vying for a super bowl. That's what i'm trying to say. I don't mean done is in. They're never gonna win done that. They're they're going to be one and fifteen. I'm not saying that at all. They have too much talent on their team to be that bad of a team but when we talk about the steelers success it is super bowl or bust. It always has been always will be. I don't think those expectations change at all ever. But still you look at the sears. Okay super bowl or bus ken. This team win a super bowl. That's the question. Can this steelers team in twenty twenty one when a super bowl. Well let's look at some of these factors. I and i it's it's i for a reason. Is ben rothlisberger. Going to come back. Is ben rothlisberger. Gonna come back. If ben does return then you have to think that if they're going to commit to the forty one million dollars and there's a lot of people on social media that think the steelers are gonna potentially give him an extension. Give him a two year extension net. Something i had thought about. And i had talked about an earlier podcast early in the season but i don't know if that's the route that they should take i really don't i i really do. I strongly believe that the steelers they're going to be committed to rothlisberger and he's committed to playing then bite. The bullet eat the forty one million dollars and see what he can do in terms of going out there in winning some football games period. Okay that's what they need to do if he does not return because i think he does return. I think they'll be competitive. I think they'll be competitive in the division. I think they'll still be competitive in the conference. Does that mean that they can represent the afc. I just think there might be too many too many question marks surrounding this group heading into two thousand twenty one and ben rothlisberger is forty one million dollars cap. Hit is just one of them. But let's ben doesn't come back. We'll do we need to go back to two thousand nineteen to remember what it was like when rothlisberger was not in a line of a preface this by saying mason rudolph that was essentially his rookie season because he did not play a snap. Didn't even dress for a game. His rookie year. He had never even played that much outside of the preseason and he was thrust into that role and then we all remember the concussion that he suffered against the ravens at heinz field then a derailed his season. Devlin hodges comes in. He plays well mazen. Murad comes back into the lineup new york. He's playing well and then he breaks his essentially breaks his collarbone. He's out of the lineup. Again it was just an up and down season. It really was reminiscent of those years. Between i guess between o'donnell and then roethlisberger where you really were just like well. This guy's a quarterback now. Can he win the games. Can he get them to the playoffs. I that's what that two thousand and nineteen season reminded me of and so i asked myself. If ben doesn't return are they. Can they win. A super bowl can a super bowl without mason rudolph. Well they tell you one thing they could do is if he doesn't return. They're going to have more salary cap flexibility whether the cap is at one eighty whether it's at one ninety or whether it goes down to one seventy five they will have more flexibility of rothlisberger. Says you got guys pounds. He's leaving iding don. I may on a call. It a career. I prayed about it. I've talked with my family about it. I think i'm done if he says all that then. The steelers are going to have more flexibility in terms of free agency. We'll talk about that in a second. But if he doesn't return. I don't know if they can contend though. It'll give them flexibility. I just don't think this team would be able to contend for a super bowl and that's what we're talking about here..

Ben rothlisberger ben rothlisberger mason rudolph ten years rothlisberger roethlisberger Murad darryl drake washington forty one million dollars Lions o'donnell two one Devlin hodges two thousand new york ben eleven seasons cleveland

"Ner and seret in matt canada and so before we get into the defensive side. I did want to mention in. ask you guys. If it matters really sat it matters a little bit james daniels. He's been a tight ends coach for the steelers for well over a decade has announced that he's retiring so it's yet another coach that the steelers are going to have to fill that position. Big deal not a big deal brian. We'll start with you. Actually you cut out for a second jeff and i apologize. I did not hear the beginning of part. I don't want to throw the seattle arm jail. The tight end coach has retired and so therefore they are going to have to fill that position. Is that a big deal. You know it's not because that's that's the position that that you know. I think that's a position that you can go ahead and fill. I don't think you're going to lose too much out of that because it's not responsible for scheme as much as getting the players ready so i i'm not too concerned about about james daniel leaving. I thought he did a pretty good job for all the years that he was here. He was here since two thousand four he had. He had some very good tight ends in that day. Well mainly heath miller but he took is like matt spaeth and made them work on this team. He took guys like david johnson and made things work. Wesley saunders for a little bit those guys that were not big names made them work and he was a very good about getting getting guys to block and do those. Do those little things that need to be done. I mean he had guys like tomb in an guys like rumors that that you know. They're not huge names but he had good success with. I think you could replicate that though. Okay your thoughts on daniel retiring I think brian said pretty well he had been around. I mean his first year with the steelers was ben's first year with the steelers. He's been here a long time and maybe just with all the changes. It was time for him to go. But like i said this is just one more position that you're Looking for an offensive coordinator to say. Hey we have some spots open. If you have the right people to do what you wanna do. And i think that'll be important. Moving forward with daniel gone which crazies. What all their offense of coaches that actually have have a position assigned to them have been here no more than two years. So it's really a big change over. Well let's remember this too. Is that from two thousand nine hundred twenty. All the did was add. Coaches added matt canada. They brought in ike hilliard. They did not get rid of anyone and now. They're looking at a significant amount of turnover in their coaching staff. Let's talk about tom bradley. He was a former. Ucla former penn state coach. They brought him from the college ranks up to the nfl. He's been here. I don't know how many years i three or four i think. He is the secondary coach he gets. He gets fired. it's everyone's thinking altera lost in his. The defensive specialists the assistant coach for the defense. He's done a good job since he's come over from cincinnati. He is interviewing with the tennessee. Titans in for that defensive coordinator position. That's available down. In tennessee in nashville. This is quite the conundrum for me. I if i'm the steelers. I need to keep austin. I wanna keep awesome. The you need him because as steel dog. Ada put a tip has twenty twenty one keith. Butler's last hurt hearing year to year. That's more news broke today. Was that keith butler. His reportedly staying. He's going to be on a year to year basis. So guys real quick. I mean we can talk about bradley austin or butler on the defensive side. Baramulla your thoughts. This is a real tough one for me. As far as idly goes but i gotta go back to the fact that before austin got here. That's secondary was incomplete. Shambles and bradley was a part of that before austin a might have only been one season where he thought he was gonna come in and clean things up and actually got worse. So i think austin made things better coming in. So i'm wondering if that's what they're looking at when they made this when they made this decision to get rid of him with knowing that you have one guy. That is year to year in keith butler knowing that tara austin might be your future defensive coordinator or he might be a guy. That's somewhere else like we just heard so. I'm not sure exactly what went on here in this situation. But i keep going back to the fact that when he was here by himself in. That doesn't include butler without austin us back so i guess that's what happened daily thoughts on the defense side of the football when they brought in austin. I almost thought that that was a little bit of a writing on the wall. We thought that maybe bradley might have been gone sooner. Reliable is this one of these deals where he wasn't working so they bring in an extra person to kinda basically do his job and phase him out of just be surprised if it took them that long to do that. I don't know if that's exactly what happened or not to me. Terro austin is. I don't want to see him. Go into a defensive coordinator role in my opinion. He's he's a keith butler. He's the kind of coach. That is a much better position coach than he is a coordinator much like even randy feeding her. You know just like some coordinators. Don't make good head coaches some position coaches don't make the best coordinators and he was not good when he was in cincinnati. So if he goes. I understand but to me. I think where he would thrive the best staying as the secondary coach in pittsburgh. I think that's just the obvious move. If he doesn't move up to something else. now. I to me the news here. Yeah i wanna keep austin a as i said. The news year was also butler getting a year to year contract. That's a really smart move by the steelers. It gives butler the flexibility..

"Mike tomlin michael. Becky that podcast. After the game on wednesday night. Mike tomlin was not very happy with his team's performance even though they were able to escape with a nineteen to fourteen win over the baltimore ravens at heinz field depleted ravens roster at that and mike tomlin started off the press conference in a positive light. I'm pretty sure that he probably looked back at his his knee jerk reaction to the game and it was a very poor one in regards to all demeanor being positive or negative. It was negative. He was mad. He was upset. He didn't like the way the team played rightfully so and so we decided to start the press conference off with some positives. He said he felt that he neglected some good things. That happened on the field. We twelve. He mentioned benny snell and that he had running the football. Especially in the second half in in the fourth quarter mainly. He talked about how he took care of the football member. Snell's the one that had the fumbling issues earlier this season any mention how he was smart enough to stay in bounds on a couple occasions to keep the clock running. Those are really really smart. Plays their heads up plays. They're a place showed that a football player is maturing in the proper way so he gave a lot of kudos to benny snell for those things. Then he went to talk about james washington the combat catch the combat catch that he made in the fourth quarter on third down. He mentioned eric ebron early in the game. Really playing well and he's at juju. Smith schuster was bad as steady as it comes when it comes to the receiving corps he also gave props jc hassen our the center. Who stepped in for markey's pouncey which it was only a few hours before kick-off when everyone found out that pouncey was going to be placed on the covid nineteen reserve list therefore was ineligible to play on wednesday and has stepped in filled in admirably. All things considered If the team is going to be without pounds. Ian james conner which tomlin said. He doesn't know they're just going. They're going to get him back when they get him back. He said that it's going to be a different story with. Hassanari is not going to be thrust into the starting position. He rothlisberger will have more of a a better idea as to what's going to be coming up. Defensively said he thought that the defense came out of the gate strong sometimes he mentioned how when you have a lull in the schedule whether it's a bye week or you get as many buys. After a thursday game. He said he was impressed. With how the steelers defense came out of the gate strong. They provided short field to the offense in the even score points by joe. Hayden's pick six He didn't stay on the baltimore game too long. He moved onto the washington. The washington football team is gonna come into pittsburgh on monday. As i said at the beginning of this podcast a five pm kickoff at heinz field is diligently have two home games remaining they have the game against washington and then they have the game against the indianapolis colts in week. Sixteen So he talked about how the defense for washington starts up front. He mentioned the edge rushers. Mainly chase young. Who's a rookie out of ohio. State looks really really good. He's into their opportunistic in the back end. That's very much a ron rivera. jack del rio. Who's the defensive coordinator those are very much stylistic things for them and how. They like to have their defenses play. He said they run a lot of mixtures of manned defense zone concepts in. They do get after the quarterback in a stop the run. This defense that they're about to play is probably out of baltimore's is the closest comparison to the steelers They rank similarly Did they get into the sax there there among the top. Five in the nfl. Getting after the quarterback so this is going to be a challenge to the steelers. Offense are gonna require their full attention for sure. Offensively said alex smith talked about it. He respects the resume. The story cities a champion and a lot of ways really glowing remarks about alex smith and his journey back to the national football but after alex smith who later in the press conference he was asked about smith's game play in in house. He seen a change since the last time they met face them which was in kansas city in the playoffs. I believe that was in two thousand and sixteen. He's look he's alex. Smith is thirty six years old. He said he's a different quarterback. Ben rothlisberger different quarterback whether that's due to the injury or father time that's not up to him to decide but yeah there are differences just like every quarterback that gets older but he mentioned antonio gibson the running back and really how the red scam. Sorry not the redskins. That's a that i apologize. It's old habits. Die hard The washington football team. They use all three of their running back very very well and he mentioned the young wide receiving corps. They have with a lot of people. Think maybe outside of pittsburgh the best young wide receiving corps in the national football league. But the steelers do have an ace up their sleeve. In that is ike hilliard. No he's not playing but he coached that team last season. He coached that unit. He's gonna know exactly what they do. Well what they struggle with what they liked to do their tendencies. That's going to be very useful tool for the pittsburgh steelers as they prepare on a short week for washington. Come to heinz field. He did get to injuries eventually. Mike tomlin only starts off the press conference with injuries. But he did not do that. In this Thursday press conference. He did say he confirmed. The bud. dupree is out for the rest of the season with a knee. Injury did not say acl but he did say he was out for the season. He said it's a tough blow for the team because everyone loves bud. Dupree is a player in a person. It's just tough to see that happen. I did not say when he's going to have surgery wasn't sure of that just yet but he did know the bud dupree is out confirmed then he did say that the the as he loves to say quote unquote bumps and bruises associated with the game of football. He mentioned steven nelson. Steven nelson was able to play on wednesday. He got through the gamy. I didn't see him leave But he said he had a knee. Injury was going to require an m. r. i. Today thursday so with that. We don't know exactly what that injury details. We don't know what that if is so severe injury. Is it a minor injury. No one knows but it was the least significant enough for the pittsburgh steelers organization to say. Let's go get checked out. Let's go get an mri done just to make sure. The first reported practice for the steelers will be on friday. That's going to be a good opportunity for them to work for us. I should say dec- whereas even nelson in regards to you know busy practicing. He not practicing stay tuned behind the curtain dot com for all the latest on that the first question that might tommy was asked about what were the drops. The wide receiving corps had at least at least five drops may be upwards of seven or eight depending on what you and he said look. It's a useful group young group. There's a variance in performance. It comes with that they have to keep working. Keep getting better. He s did he has to be thinking that he hopes his this is a one game. Thing i'm sure that the the receivers are going to be focusing. Maybe a little bit more than they usually do on the fundamentals a little bit better. He was asked about alex. High smith who obviously is going to be the main man stepping in to fill in for bud dupree hitting. It's going to be a mixture of high smith. Anna lead any. But mike tomlin was very confident in highsmith. He's i was. I'm confident in highsmith. Like i was confident in roberts..

"You name it even Pandora I found that again, check today as making dinner go to Pandora search behind the curtain than you will be able to find all of our podcast. There's even if you're someone that's like I don't have I tunes, I don't have spotify if you have Pandora even the free version, you can solis. Dr Shows so. Of you've been happy with the new. The new podcast platform. Or just in. General. Avenue. Jeff I'm just so happy jackass but I'm happy. Megan. That's awesome. Very good. Let's talk about some news. Shall we get right into the NFL news now? There was a Lotta stuff that happened this week with training camp underway. Obviously, we're trying to figure out. You know all the people that spoke we from Mike Tomlin Ike Hilliard candidate. There's with the coaches we heard from Vince Williams Deontay Johnson Dan. Rothlisberger. How can I forget him Won The that we that this dealers had. Conference calls. With. Think those it don't they, Johnson I was thinking the players I know you had coach well, technically we had. Rainy rainy feeder and Keith Butler but. Yes. That was was that over the weekend. Was Yeah that was that was during the week. So okay. So there's a lot of news dave at of all the people that talked at all the people that spoke this week. was there anyone or anything that they said in particular? They kind of jumped out at you. Well, Geoffrey Benedikt caught something that I did not catch and he had an article out about that. And it was although a lot of people were speculating how much matt candidate is going to be involved in the steelers offense this year and BOOB largely debated of both on our podcast and on the website some people think he has more has less and the Johnson slid something into his interview to kind of confirm that. They're practicing what they would call the different motions that I use air quotes for those of you listening in podcast form that come with Matt candidate style of offense that they were practising these things so that I found that interesting that we kinda got some confirmation that at least his fingerprints going to be on the offense a little bit. Very, good Brian just welcome back a benny to jump real quick. Basically, the question as Dave was all the people that spoke this week in the players coaches, you name it. was there any one person in anything that was said that kind of jumped out at you now brought up the fact Jeffrey Benedict wrote this article for the site today on how Johnson hinted that king they met Canada fact with motions in that movement is is coming to Pittsburgh outside of that is ending. Kind of sparked with you at. You know what? It's not as much as what everybody said. It's about what everybody did and you know we've talked in the past about team by we talked about how united this team is and look I'm looking at the fact that the steelers are. One Eighth of the League one eighth of the teens did not have anybody leave with covid leave because of covid. I just. I have no problem you do. Drop out for the year because of that put on the list, but it just seems like everything that I'm hearing and every interview that I'm listening to. I'm just hearing men on a mission. And it just seems like they're they're staying. The course there is are are really focused and. So. That that's what I'm pretty excited about the if I was going to point out one more thing that I heard this week that I thought it was refreshing was the whole Eric Ibrox on. His connection already with Ben Rothlisberger staying at his house. and. Taking care of business that way you know getting on the same page. Antonio Brown was never invited to was only invited events house once and Eric. Well Brunswick can I say something about that quick because I asked I said something about this to Michael Beck and asked Jeffrey Benedict that question this question that I asked Michael Last night. Although Michael doesn't have any kids what as a matter if you're at home we family guys, we have kids. Would you let someone like you Antonio Brown in Your House for an extended period time around around your young children? That's a good question. Hell No. Hell. No. Tom Brady bed. Houses probably. So huge. Another ZIP CODE Oh, my Gosh, Antonio Brown we'll. We'll talk about Antonio Brown a little bit show. I have to be honest it this. In this stage of the game where we are in terms of this weird training camp where I don't want to promote my morning show but tomorrow This recorded. To promote boarding, come on Friday morning. Let's ride is five reasons why fans will really miss this. It's just such a weird in different training but one of his we're not going to get the news is same where everyone's getting the same exact quotes the same transcripts it's really awful. It is the world we live in I, get it I'm not trying to change that I'm just stating that the fact of the matter is is edge to strange but anyways, when Ben Rothlisberger it's to me, it's everything is worthy. You know he does do a Lotta coach, but I have to be honest for me. I love the fact that he said he was nervous if he's nervous in front of the media I guarantee you. He's Kinda nervous to get back now some might say, well, you know a not too nervous that he's jittery a game because there's no preseason. There's no warm up games for Ben. It's going to be right into week one but you guys by Internet nervous talk or do you think that it's just.

"ike hilliard" Discussed on Behind the Steel Curtain

"All. Right. His Burke steeler. Fans Jeff Hartmann here your host dead let's ride and I'm the CO editor behind the steel curtain dot com. We already did the first two of the five things that fans are going to miss about this awkward and strange. Different training. Camp in two thousand, twenty in the first one was it's not going to be visible. The second one is that we're not GONNA get to witness progress with our own two eyes and the third thing is news. News. My goodness the news is just so weird. Hey again, if I I I've ran, I've been a part of the steel curtain for at least the past seven seasons I've been an editor in some way shape or form in the last six going into my six season. Eight you're so used to finding these articles that are written because we are not permitted at training camp out unless we're just going as fans. I'm so used to sing let's say it's Joe Rudder of the Pittsburgh Tribune review just to throw out a name. But say, Joe Rudder is waiting is the players are leaving practice latrobe? And all of a sudden he sees Carlos Davis Seventh Round Pick in the two thousand, twenty NFL draft coming up the hill. No one's asking for his autograph he's had a really good Camp Joe Rutter says Hey Carlos you got a minute. and. He said sure and he goes over and any gives them. It gives them an interview. You're not going to get that this year. Because, the reporters are not going to be allowed to be in that setting with them, and so fans will get to hear from this player that they're not going to get to hear from this year. Because now, the Pittsburgh steelers are hand-picking who reporters to interview. Again I understand it that doesn't mean I have to like it. There's a clear difference I understand why they're doing it but at the same time that doesn't mean that fans aren't going to miss all that stuff so. For instance this week you heard from Mike, Tomlin Deontay Johnson Vince Williams Ben. Rothlisberger I believe Ike Hilliard met Canada coaching staff. You know all these they're doing a great job of getting reporters and news out leads people to be interviewed. But. It's just not the same zoom calls suck. I hate to use that word. My mom would yell at me when I would use that word as a kid choose a different words she would say, well, they stink then mom sorry they're awful because you have reporters that are not tech savvy and they're you know they might be a little older and they don't know how to take the mute off their microphone when it's their turn to ask a question and they're asking some are asking five questions some don't even get to ask a question because they can't figure out their technology. These zoom calls are awful. Awful I mean just atrocious you can't do anything about it but at the same time, it's just the news is going to be missed. It's going to be missed from top to bottom. You'RE GONNA miss this post game interviews where let's say Joe. Haden. Think back to the New Orleans game in New Orleans two years ago he gets called for those two bogus pass interference calls. You'RE NOT GONNA get fans hearing from Joe Haden. Why because if that were the same game that happened in twenty twenty, there's no way. steelers put him in front of the camera and say you've got to answer questions instead you're going to hear from Mike. Tomlin you'll hear from Ben Rothlisberger or you hear from Cameron Heyward and then they'll be on their way. In that's lousy. As. Lousy for the fans, it's also lousy for the reporters and for people that run websites like myself Dave Scofield Brian. Anthony. Davis Michael Beck. Just, it just the fact of the matter. So News, this year's going to be scarce sin. It's it's a shame but that's number three. The news is not going to be very good. Fourth Fan experience. I want to say that it's well less than a third of the National Football League teams still actually traveled to a destination for training camp that has become a dying breed of organizational thought in the national football league I know that living in Maryland. The Baltimore Ravens used to go to mcdaniel college or Western Maryland and then they stopped and they decide and just stay at home we're going to stay in Baltimore they're giant castle under armor facility, which is really awesome driven by it looks phenomenal. But at the same time they've steelers have. been super loyal to the town of Latrobe into Saint Vincent College and a Guy Young as a kid, a guy that used to coach actually went to Saint Vincent on Lacrosse scholarship in he actually he's a ravens fan but he worked the steelers camps and he was always over there with the players he was driving the golf carts around said, the guys couldn't have been nicer that it was such a cool organization, the way that they came and. It's just an awesome experience. You get kids to get their very first autograph You get people that you get up close and personal local players. It's just second to none. It's so intimate there that. I just you can't duplicate it and again I. Don't expect them to try to duplicate it. There was actually talk a couple months ago that the steelers at Heinz you'd were still going to try into a fan fest event at Heinz Field in just have everyone spread out only accept certain number of tickets and you could just watch practice, but you can't be on top or another. Well, clearly allegheny county put the Kabosh on that really quick and that's not going to happen this year I would be stunned did in. So the fan experience this season in terms of the training camp is zero..

"Let's your point five. Randy Baumann and the DVD in show and Mike pursued her. Back for more second, helping of sports as we continue on with the steelers and a wide receiving corps that. A lot is going to be expected out of because you don't have a whole lot more of number seven's arm. In the lineup for the Pittsburgh steelers, I don't anticipate this being a Tom Brady thing where he plays Tilles forty three or whatever. I'm thinking he might have three more years of Big Ben at the most right now. So GotTa Make Hay while the Sun Shining Yeah it's it's really interesting. Thought. Does he keep going and going because he loves it so much and eventually become a thinking dunk guy i. don't think. So either I think. I think when the when the gunslinger runs out of bullets, he's going to ride off into the sunset, but he's back now and the steelers really excited about that and includes the wide receivers coach Ike. Hilliard, who introduced himself to the Pittsburgh media via zoom yesterday. Hilliard. said there's a whole lot to like about his new position but the one of the things that. Just isn't gonNA, work out the way he wants to here in Pittsburgh is that. I killed is not gonna be able to work with the steelers. Franchise quarterback in a guy who Hilliard perceives as a hall of fame quarterback as often as he'd prefer. There's never gonNA be enough time. For made a spin with the quarterback in. Trains you. "We're not looking to start any other era anytime soon. Not Mason Rudolph, no one else. We want you back for another two years. A lot of us there. Those three questions. What will it take Ben to be back in your opinion? What if his arm isn't one hundred percent? And what if the arm is stronger than ever? Those, three questions Ben throws now what? I'll tell you what's up next talking about the offense and the inexperience with Ben Rothlisberger right after this break. All, right steeler fans welcome back to. Let's ride. I'm Jeff, Arben, your host here co editor of behind the steel curtain dot com I. Mean we talked about this scenarios. Dan. Rothlisberger. Exactly. What that's GonNa. Look like. Now, we're GONNA talk about how this offense. And when you look at the offense from two, thousand nineteen. There was some promise there. It didn't necessarily always show up in the results, but there was promised there, and then you add some of the free agent acquisitions that they made some of the decisions that they've made so far in some, make you scratch your head a little bit, but other otherwise some make you think. Wow. What is this offense going to look like? With Ben Rothlisberger under center? Well, we don't know. Talk about it. It down by position in talk about the experience level with each player in regards to Ben. Rothlisberger. Ben. Rothlisberger. Is Feel General. And I know that that term gets used an awful lot talking about quarterbacks. But if he is the field general, let's look at the receivers. Here the receivers that have no experience. I mean none zero. Zilch. The first time they're catching a pass from. Ben. Rothlisberger. Is a training camp. At Heinz field. You're talking Dion Cain who is in addition midway through the year last year from the Indianapolis Colts, practice squad in rookie as playful. At Notre Dame, first time, they've ever worked with Ben Rothlisberger, that's naturally going to take time to to kind of get a feel for what they do. Well, where the passes to be thrown. You know everyone knows what quarterback receivers are all about. Now, there's some the minimal experience thinking about Deonte Johnson and I. I. Think. deontay Johnson has slowly worked his way up into a budding superstar category. When people like, wow. This guy is a superstar. This player could be a superstar I feel like, deonte. Johnson. Slowly worked his way up into that latter category in regards of he could be great. With the ball in his hands, give him space. He is dangerous. He is only a training camp in six quarters with Ben Rothlisberger, and let's not forget deontay Johnson ability suffered a hamstring injury last year in training camp and didn't play that much with Ben. Rothlisberger. So he could maybe even put him into the no experience other than the fact that he does have last Season Mandatory minicamp Ota's with within. There is some experience there but not much not much. The most experience you have or with players like Juju, Smith Schuster, Ryan Switzer, and James Washington, James Washington, going into your three yesterday on the show I talked about how there hasn't really been a cohesive connection between he and Rothlisberger every time you see James Washington doing damage. It always seemed like someone else was during the passes Mason Rudolph. Especially, why would they have that college connection? They definitely know what each other's doing that situation with those receivers is going to be something to watch. I'm not worried about Judas or even. Even. Ryan Switzer when it comes to the connection with Rothlisberger, the others there is cause for concern because, yeah, you could have the best young wide receiving corps in the NFL, but if you're not on the same page with your quarterback, that's a problem and Monday Ike. Hilliard, the new wide receivers coach was interviewed by reporters on zoom call the typical. The typical conference calls you have and he spoke about how he is working a lot with rothlisberger about what he is seeing so that he can co job his receivers to see the same thing, and that's good news to hear. What about the tight ends? Okay daily advanced McDonald. He has experience with Ben. Very good friends with Rothlisberger out the field, they do a lot together. Rothlisberger has talked about them being studies, their families, their wives are friends. They have a great report. I'm not worried about. Vance McDonald has pertains to Ben. Rothlisberger. IBRAN ANZAC Gentry, the other two. Or if you WANNA go to the newest tight end, they just picked picked up. I they have? No. Absolutely. No. None. No experience. Again, gentry might have caught a few passes last year as a rookie in training camp in that it. Iran. was playing. For other teams, he was a free agent acquisition. So obviously, that's going to be a situation where especially look at Iran's is supposed to be a huge red zone threat. You, need to know what's going on at all times especially in the red zone, the red zone because the field shortens, there's that extra defender as the back boundary everything becomes magnified in the red zone, and so it's going to be really key. See how quickly Eric Brown Ben Rothlisberger can get up to speed because if not. Well, that's going to be a shame because I. think there's a lot of potential in that connection, the running backs, he might single jeff letter running backs to do with it gave Obviously, blitz pickup is important. Knowing. Where to go as a safety valve. We've all seen James Connor lady on bell before him. They have racked up a ton of receiving yards just based on Ben is in trouble. He turns because he knows where his running back supposed to be dumps it off a novice uneasy, a fifteen, sixteen yard gain. If the receiver, the receiving running back if the running back is not where they're supposed to be that play doesn't happen and it turns into a sack. So yes, this does matter James Connor Jalen. Have the most experience with Brothels Burger, but you look at. You know then Snell minimal. He's a rookie last year again. said it with Gentry said with Johnson Johnson, they obviously don't have a lot of repetitions with Rothlisberger. You'll get Anthony McFarland Kenneth Y junior none white came off the bears practice squad midway through the year last year. No experience. Okay. Trend here, folks you see a trend that is. There's a lot of players now on this roster that don't have a lot of experience with Ben Rothlisberger under center the only exception to that rule. Is the offensive. Line. The offensive line even though the even though Ramon foster retired is very much a veteran line with marquees penalty. That is Ben's they used to call it. It's Ben's rider die. He is GonNa play as long as Ben. Rothlisberger plays as long as the steelers are willing to keep him around in mark. He's bouncing signed that new contract. He's under contract for next two years. He should be there. The pouncey is Ben's Guy. He has his center. You just don't mess around with a quarterback in. In. Center, I'll never forget Terry Bradshaw on the steps of Ken. Ohio. Saying what I wouldn't give to put my hands of Mike Webster's budget is one more time and Mike Webb Jackson came up and snapped in the football as pretty. Funny. But there's something about a quarterback in the center. That's important. pounds. He's back. He should be healthy. David decastro been around for a long time ally Villanueva been around for a long time, and when you look at everything else along the offensive line..

"I went back and I was practicing at my house. To make sure that your presentation is sharper and many. You know he'd install play maybe two days later. It might be that dates. Hey, get up there and teach me trips right seventy two ZAP x out. You know and and go through just the way that you would teach all eleven if you're installing and those types of things are just so valuable and really it. It helped me grow as a coach more than I could've ever understood in the meantime, but looking back on. It's like wow, what a great opportunity! That was that I didn't appreciate as much as I should have in the present. That's crazy, so you're basically getting like one on one like it is like graduates, a almost like a graduate course for football right like one on one with a super bowl winning coach it. Really is like it was basically when you see those. GRUDEN QB camps. Yeah similar to that like what he would do. He's got all these films these preparations. He teaching you the intricate details. He was just looking at it from a big picture lengths for coaches, but the is that. Were there all the time myself Jay Gruden I? Mean you'll get the ability to spend that much time with those two guys. And then there would be people that would be in and out the malls apart. Those were the three people that were the most consistent from coaching standpoint, but. But he got me exposure to people. Jim has came over there bond. There was just so many guys that I got a chance to learn from that I'll never forget that experience. Okay, so you're probably like at that point after doing that for a couple of months, you're probably like raring to get back out out and coach again. Right and the chance there is there. You know what's coming in the NFL like you said. What was it like coaching? They're like what do you like? Because? Obviously, we've seen these leagues Papa like the xfl the last couple of years. What was that like coaching that leak? You know what it was like. It was an awesome experience, and really you know I. Mean You look at the coaching staff that we had Jay Gruden was the see. I was on that site staff. Ike Hilliard who's the receivers coach for the steelers was also on our staff You look at the defensive side of the ball. Jim has was the. The D. Coordinator and head coach. There were so many Bill Bradley we had. We had a bunch of great coaches on their. We had fun. We lived at a unbelievable resort is Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando. We live there full time so as basically equivalent to what training camp experience entails when you go away, but you're staying there to those season, and there's four teams the other team. Team The New York team was actually staying in that hotel. What we were I mean it was. It was awesome. You just realize the the unbelievable amount of resources that the NFL provides that. Just you take for granted, but gave you I mean it was just it was equivalent. Whereas high level ball, there was still some defensive restrictions, but football still football guys. Is Your meat in your? Your practice and you go out. You have some fun. And there was only one other game a week so I was Dublin as the quality control coach for each side, but it was pretty easy, because you only have one other game to break down at in your practice in it was you know we went undefeated through the regular season? Then? Unfortunately, we lost the championship that year to. The Gym fossils team to Las Vegas motives, but we spent a week in Las. Vegas Getting Ready for that game. I think there was a lot of guys coaches included. That probably had a little too much fun. It's. You. Know it's funny like when you started. T- like explaining that like I sort of remember like covering high school sports. I learned from having jobs where I had to do everything. Right like so you go to the game like no one's handing your stats. You gotTA keep stats. No one's telling you who to go to to to. After the game, you got to figure that out around and so I would think like an a job like that like in the NFL. Were the staff smaller, the budget smaller. You're probably learning. Learning from having to do more at that age, right? No, and that's such a good point like if you don't take for granted the things they do in the NFL and I think not skipping those steps to wear. Hey, it's breaking down every little detail. It's doing the things that typically are already for you because you have so many different people involved at the NFL level that it does give you an appreciation in perspective, but then I also think your word in the right ways. You know one of the things. Things that I think is really important I tell our coaches now Albert, is a you. Can you have these unseen hours where you can accumulate experience faster than other people based on how you work, but it is still vital to get exposure to those different jobs as you work your way up the ladder so that you don't skip steps and I think that part of it for me. Were you're doing a year? The Assistant to the assistant with the box and you're able to learn a little bit more about football. Football so that you can then get involved in. Have some understanding then you're getting a chance to learn how to coach. How to communicate with the players had to be able to see the game in live action and make those corrections, and and those those first three years were so valuable for me and you know I I know it was so beneficial, and then you get a chance to take the next steps in the big way around there and and like I, said it's almost embarrassing. How lucky I've been! So, how does the redskins opportunity came about because now twenty four years old. You've done the job. You've done the work with John..

"Candy were talked about the last lockout that was a part of his rookie class, and he just said he felt like his head was kinda swimming a lot of the year trying to play, catch up. You know there's only so much you can learn from the other side of a computer you can go out there and take the wraps and and walk through plays. We've talked to some rookies. Who've said yet I? M going out on the field. Behind my house in lining up like I'm running these routes, but. You know where is the defense is pretty solid. They returned. Most of their starters are not going to have a lot of young guys seeing significant playing time the offense does. Guys like. Klay Pool, that I mentioned Deonte Johnson in his second year you know maybe Anthony McFarland behind James Connor. So I think that right now there's having a lot of conversations obviously but you also have to consider the fact that they're trying to break in new coaches like quarterbacks, coach, Matt, Canada and wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard Mike. Tomlin said yeah, they're fitting in pretty well in the zoom meetings and And they're. They're moving along at the pace that they expected to move along at least virtually, but there's still so much, you said. He estimates between nine hundred thousand snaps. These guys are getting so where there might have been high hopes and expectations for rookie class. That didn't have necessarily a flashy draft. Pick in. There aren't really a lot of flashy guys from last year's draft last either at least offensively. I just don't see them having the impact. Maybe the steelers hoped they would have. When they drafted them, just because of the tailed off season. Show show you mentioned James Connor. He's a key player is really again and fitness is fundamental here because. In two thousand eighteen, he was a prolific player, and it was some big shoes to fill as well, but he was way hit the ground. Everything be in stride and hit the ground, running hundred and thirteenth scrimmage yards. He was averaging per game in that year is. Really really. Exciting injuries tailed that that progression that trajectory. What kind of shape a have you heard? He's in? And how important is it for? The steelers playoff ambitions that that connor is back to those kind of two thousand eighteen levels. Yeah I mean it's not just well shaped. We've heard that. He said he's posted on instagram and on twitter. The I I. Don't know that I'd call it a transformation because he's always been pretty muscular, but maybe the evolution. Of his body in his muscles, he posted a picture of his back flexing, and it was unlike anything I've ever seen in. We asked him about it in a conference call and he said Oh. Everybody's back can look like that. No one on this all has a back like. Anything like that. He said this pandemic. He's really focused on working out and getting in the weight room like a lot of guys because there's not much else going up. But I I think that he knows that last year was really disappointing season in a season that they really could've used him especially with Ben out I mean he ends up having just four hundred and sixty four yards. He missed six games because of what the steelers called acute injuries. He had some issues with leaving me his ankle. At one point a shoulder. Just it just kind of a combination of all these things felt like if if he could, if something could go wrong, dead and granted in. Wasn't you know an acl or something like that? The you can maybe see lingering effects from its youtube seasons, but. It was enough that it disrupted. The steelers run game. They were not very good on the ground. and I think that they would like to go back to obviously you. Of course you WANNA. Have the twenty eighteen James Connor, but I've had questions. Will the steelers go running back by committee situation, and that's not what Mike Tomlin prefers. He would like to have a featured back. James Connors better when he is the featured guy when he is carrying the ball upwards of twenty times a game but durability is biggest issue and I think if if he can't be durable, the season the steelers may have to move on from him whether that's. Leaning on Denise, snail. To be the next future guy or taking another guy in the next draft start to fill that role of more off has been on and talk about the at in particular some comments makeup. It's factor because it was one of my favorite plays and full disclaimers. Dolphins Fan, and helping society as a kid, so the of its. It's still haunts me to this day. ATTICA, how much! We should never have have done that opinion anyway, so we'll talk because it's a really exciting day I think but. What more on the quarterback, situation, because obviously, with wrote this bugs, injury, concerns got to look at the backup. Backup options and last year that was flip flopping between Rudolph and DOT COM is Paxton Lynch interesting acquisition as well so the moment four quarterbacks on the roster I get a very unorthodox. preseason off season so. Walking out what the pecking order might be behind a Ben. I guess is difficult, but if you had anything that front, who do you expect to be the number two? And will they go into the season carrying all four one doctor, the practice squad? What can you tell us about the backup situation? When quite clearly it's a, it's a key concern for for Mike. told him given given ruthless bugs, injury concerns right I mean last year was the was the perfect example of needing to trust your backup quarterbacks and and having backups. Who can carry the season and they weren't able to do that I mean. They. The quarterback position obviously is the group struggled the most last year, but despite the issues at Mason Rudolph had in the ignition system play that he had he didn't do much on the field that was inspiring. That would make you think this is the guy the future. This is the guy that that the steelers want to put the future of their franchise. They WANNA. PUT IT in his hands, but every move that they've made this offseason signals that Mason Rudolph will be the number two guy and there's still some hope that he can succeed Ben. Whenever Ben Retires I think that there's one hire that they've made it kind of Mason Rudolph last hope or maybe best hope for the future, and that's in bringing in Mack Canada I'm in doing that. The steelers signaled. Hey, we still want to devote all of our resources to this guy who we drafted who believe can step in and and be the leader and be the quarterback this team so rather than going out in either. Either draft a quarterback Jalen hurts was available when they made their selection in the second round, rather than going out and signing James. Winston or Cam Newton or Colin Kaepernick you'll all three of those guys were available at one point the steelers to pick up. They didn't want to spend that money. There instead they go out and they hire quarterbacks coach because they want to develop the young talented they have. steelers Mo for a long time they like to draft our own guys in and develop them. Groom them and bring them up in the system. And they're not gonNA. Go Away from that with Mason Rudolph so I think that this is his best shot this year to prove that he has what it takes to take over for beneficially. Whether, that's next year two or three years. I think that that if he struggles being the number two if he doesn't show them what they want to see on the field in practice or step into a game, then they'll really have to consider signing a free agent next year or drafting a guy but I I do think the behind him. It'll be duck hodges number three and Paxton Lynch. I'm not sure of his practice squad availability, but. But he hasn't shown me anything in practice that signals that he can leapfrog either duck or or Mason. Rudolph on obviously former first-round pick. You hope that that maybe he's just had some bad or something hasn't clicked yet, but so far. We haven't seen it clicking in Pittsburgh to signal that that he could move up the depth chart significantly. Okay, let's Talk Eden and I mentioned Meka, Fitzpatrick..

"Have a good one Delta question if they protect the football or they don't protect the football because the streak is still alive. What is it twenty? Three Games yet really long if twenty three games. Does the STEELERS SUCCESS? Hang ON THAT ONE STATISTIC LANDS. What are your thoughts? I think it does I think it does. I think particularly on the offensive side of ball. Talk about the streak. They have to stop. Turn the football over me. That has stop. Presumably if been rothlisburger burger comes back. That's why I say presumably because we hope he won't turn the ball over and I'm just going to say that he's coming back. He's going to be the week one starter. There's going to be no more setbacks. I'm convinced throwing video. He's going to be the week one-star so if he protects the football then that is a key to their success. That's assuming they don't take the ball over at the same rate of last year. Defensive turnovers are great to get. But you absolutely don't want to turn the ball over on offense. You don't want to give away possessions. You want every possession if you can to result in some type of score or you WanNa flip the field in. Put Your opponent in a bad situation in terms of down in distance. So you know one key is they have to stop turn footballer offensively because even with them leading the League in turnovers last year I think they were still we a-plus eight or something like that. You know they were. They were like they were still plus eight and I believe thirty eight turnovers so I mean you can't you can't turn the ball over as as consistently as they did last year and expect to win football games so that is an area of improvement that has to happen if they WanNa have success in twenty twenty so I do think it's critical that that is it just me or the only person that I know. Interceptions happen is one of the things that fumbles are way worse. I don't know maybe it's the act of you. Actually coughing up the ball having possession of the ball and is giving it up Arabia's because last season alone we had two fumbles and I say we is in the steelers at two fumbles that killed games. James Garner in San Francisco Juju Smith Against Baltimore overtime at Heinz field like just critical fumbles or you can even go a third and you can talk about the fumbled handoff. Whatever that wasn't wildcat against the bills right after Stephen Nelson's interception James Connor handing off the deontay Johnson and they fumbled Ballwig's. I find for some for some strange reason that I think fumbles are way worse navy. It's because interception is a forward pass in that you know you think about this deep balls. Didn't picked off your glasses. Kinda like upon. Maybe there's that in my head either. Now I might. Fumbles are deflating. The Are deflating mostly because of what you said. They had the ball in and they put it on the ground where it got knocked loose. So fumbles I think. Psychologically or more deflating but I think interceptions or more painful In the football game or or a bigger issue because a lot of time with interceptions is you can also returned and give up yardage as well so throw the pick. And then they'll get fourteen fifteen twenty yard runback and so that's two less first downs that they have to get to score so I think interceptions are a little more damaging than fumbles but fumbles piss you off because guys have the ball and a lot of times. It's bad technique. They don't shift the ball to the opposite arm away from the Tackler they're holding it out and loose like Shawn McCoy. You know where they're doing something technique wise where they're putting the ball in harm's way and you're just like Nah. Just be careful with the football. And they're being careless so I think fumbles are more emotional for fans than interceptions. Yeah I mean this is something I got from my father. We will be watching games. And you'd see I mean he's a defensive player even an offensive player. I go running back. Receiver THAT CATCHES THAT LITTLE. Dig Route across the middle in there running in space in a lot of times. They lose that spatial awareness. And who's around them where they are? My Dad always yell protect the football. Protect the football. Because you're waiting for that guy from behind punch the ball. We saw Abby Johnson several times this year's rookie he didn't have the ball on tight. Like you said technique of sure to learn from that but that's what they discussed on the steelers stack and I agree with you. I think that if they can protect the football. I'm not suggesting that this defense is GonNa get that many takeaways again in twenty twenty but at the same time if they don't turn it over as much in they get just a little tick down on the takeaways. The ratio will be better with something we talked about a lot on this show that ratio now in the second half of the stack EEK show where big briscoe and Dave talked about. They talked about the new wide receiver coach higher. Which wasn't Jericho Khatri? Wasn't Brian. Mcclendon. That we talked about two weeks ago. It was none other than Ike Hilliard. And that's a name that I hadn't heard in years and it was a situation where the news came out. Dave sends me a tax saying. Hey but the news just broke lies at our. Let's get it done so we both start working on the document whereas getting article ready killer. I've heard his name before you do some research on well. This is a former first on graphics but the giants played for several years. He coached for the Redskins than the bills and dolphins and back with the redskins under Jay Gruden in now he comes to Pittsburgh so lance. I'm not expecting this drew. Great breakdown of Ikea's. But when you heard Ike Hilliard 's name and he being the sign person to take over that wide receiver coach position will re thoughts your number. I keep play for University of Florida. Was A gator correct. Yes you're correct. Yeah I remember I kill you from being really good with the gators. I think the first thing I thought was well. He was a good player in the first round draft. Pick you know maybe that will translate to the young wide receiver core in that you know. Here's a guy. Play the position at a high level in the NFL. You know maybe that will resonate with the young white receiver group. Because I think they probably know his work or at least he's of the age where you could typing you to type. Ike Hilliard and see him making plays now. I was listening to that show. He has some connections to Tomlin correct. Well he played in Tampa Bay when Mike. Tomlin was the defensive backs coach down there for ten years. There is a connection. Yes okay so yeah I mean you know like we said before you know it. It's hard to measure the impact of a wide receiver coach but just having a former wide receiver coach. The wide receivers just at a very high level seems like a positive to me and I guess it's also a positive that him and Tomlin have a relationship so I'm sure that they talk back to their days in Tampa Bay and I'm sure he's monitored the wide receivers from Washington and so it's it's yet to see if it's a good higher But we'll see. I'm glad they've got finally resolved that hiring and they've got that position staff solidified because right now it's important as they go to the scouting combine as well as they draft players at the wide receiver. Coach is in the building helping to evaluate the wide receiver position. But even if it had not they had not hired that guy you know Mike Tomlin being a former wide receiver I think they would have been able to fill that gap until they did it but I think it was critical that they got the wide receiver coach as they're doing this evaluation as getting ready for the draft. The moral of this story for all the fans out there and read behind the Steel Curtain Dot Com. Is that unless it's officially announced by the Pittsburgh steelers. You will see one word before the rest of the headline on Oliver Articles. Net is report report. Just like when Brian mcclendon. It was reported that he was going to be hired. And we did a whole show on that you just can't you just can't trust everybody. See what's that on the screener last night? Wolf said still can't believe coach. Drake is gone very sad stuff. Yeah so we remembering send. Our consultants is to coach. Drake's family very very tough loss to steelers suffered last year at. Yeah it's it's absolutely people. Forget that it happened in training camp and how that impacts the team from a mental standpoint very young wide receiving core. I think you know when you look at Johnson and Washington even Juju people forget this young guy very young young young young man so I think I kill you being a younger guy himself. He's been there. He's done that you know. I mean. He was a first round draft pick. He understands the expectations. He understands what it's like to get you out there and have to perform. I think he did that at a pretty high level so I cleared the Pittsburgh steelers newest wide receiver coach. Jeff before you get into the next Review of the next show. Let let's do you like this. Big Marv let me posted appear bid MARV thirty four sits steeler nation. What's Good Lansing Jeff? Very much welcome back by ONIC. Bo Been Big weight off our brains. Check it out and we gave our predictions as what's going to happen with budget pre. What's going to happen with bj Finney? You know what's going to happen. Sean Davis a player that no one is remembering when they're talking about restrictive unrestricted free agents for the steelers Go back and check out that show but in the after party we talked about and I wanted to get. Your thoughts lands the best worst in end the toughest free agents to leave.

"And you know what my interests of that one correct? He didn't have to have surgery that he could have retired. Just like Bradshaw. Exactly you know if you wanted to play. If you wanted to play quarterback he had to have surgery but my question is if he said well if he could still play quarterback but not had the surgery there were reports name one. Give me one one source. One name of someone who said that name one. I use this time to time with people like oh well there were things that were said and people know that. Okay name one. Just Gimme one and you know what he can't 'cause there wasn't you know there might have been rumblings of people that know any better but no one that actually had legitimate information. That was really really dumb but it just goes to show the off season in the NFL. Were getting dumb news. We're getting done takes. We're getting outside the lines running a story and completely slobbering over someone who agreed to up here for them even though none of the evidence backs up. So now we no longer have a a Lance Williams Internet connection fund or Brian. Anthony Davis Internet Connection Fund. We now have the big Bro. Sco Computer Find It. Just sometimes they gotta get reset. I just don't know what happened there. So my daughter's computer because she's got the laptop so yeah yeah read brought up a point of some some said it said earlier a trade in the first round from forty nine almost surely has to include a future number one so therefore. I don't see it happening. I don't have to go up in the very end of the first round and and like I said before quarterbacks not a position to do that for. I don't know that there's anyone that they want that bad too. I mean they wanted Bush. They traded up and got him. They want if it's Patrick. They traded and got him. They can't constantly do that and have any kind of capital. There's GonNa come to a point where they just where they just can't so I'm going to see if I can catch up a little bit. Get a couple more questions before we call it a show here. I'm just glad you made it back to the throne left-handed speak. Hey you gotta find. There's one at ten forty two PM from Thaddeus that he asked me a question and I once you bring that one up okay. Football related was still. But it's a fun question. Okay how did I miss that one? Probably because he started it with the at sign I didn't see gross go who won the wrestling match growing up. Between you and Dave. I actually talked a little bit about this on the after party thorough. Well that gets pretty easy. See people wouldn't believe this looking at at this now. Okay you've always been big little. I graduated high school at six foot. One hundred and fifty five pounds. I try to get ready over that when I was in seventh grade. Tried to bulk up and play football one year high school got all the way up to one seventy went to basketball camp for a week. Lost the twenty pounds back to one fifty so by the time I was sixteen. And you were twelve. You pretty much can take me in a wrestling match. You outweighed me. Yeah I was more of the hidden run guy because I was extremely fast so I would come in. Take by shots and then escape. Yeah for for those of you that this is what's interesting to others. Now rich was the speedy guy he was the like at high school with baseball. He was either the lead off or number nine hitter. Because you know a lot of times high school you want that speedy guy very your lineup to roll into it but a lot of times leadoff. Guy. They they wanted you all they want to do that. Leadoff walk. And how many times did you get the leadoff? Walk there. The great butter behind you and they'd get you all the way to third base with with with one out and the number three hitter coming up. That's just what they would do. Eight Times eight times my senior year in high school. Yeah that's what you guys did so I was you were you. Were the strong guy. So the wrestling matches by by the time you were twelve. Pretty much could take wrestling matches. I should have used that as example for one Jefferson Hartman when we when he said that the tag team match would be him and Lance William versus myself and Brian. Anthony Davis and I said you guys don't get well first of all. I said gladly. Take Brian as my tag team partner. Because he would play dirty well just like the same thing they said about George Costanza. Onside felt that he would. He would cheat to win. You know that's what he would do. He would fight dirty and then me I said guys. I'm judy and just like when you gotta catch me and I should have responded when I was huge and my brother was when we were younger. My brother was super fast. I learned how to adapt of. Trust Me Jeff. I don't think jeff is anywhere close right now at this fast. What you were back in the day. We'd have those but I did mention before I got too big for you. What move would you throw me in the whole being four forever when I was little it was wanted to put you in a full Nelson sleeper? Hold Oh no. I forgot about the sleeper. Hold sleeper all. Now I remember me laying on the floor and you sitting on me keeping me in that cable clutch talk so that. Yeah. That was a lot of fun. We we add some good wrestling matches. But like I said before you what. I didn't fight that much growing up I mean. We did have one pretty intense dispute during wiffle ball in college but that was pretty fun. That was pretty much so but that was a great question Daddy. I really enjoyed that one but we want to thank you guys for I. Kind of my live chat froze up a little bit. There's someone in. There are some of their arguing with sorry. Wanted to thank you guys so much for joining in here for the. Qna went a little bit longer than we thought. But I wanted to do some questions. Once we got rich back. Thank you thank you. Thank you for joining us. "That. It's going to determine what the steelers doing free agency in in the draft because it depends if it becomes a I mean if they don't have creates they have a whole that has to be filled if they do have depre- and I still think that the the young guys they have. Backups could be suitable backups. They wouldn't even have to address the position even with the loss of Tikolo. Although I do think they would still possibly draft one even late if not picking up someone for cheap so I think it's very much determines that and something that that I say. Is He worth it? That's the thing you gotta figure out. If he's worth it. The reports were today is that he fired his agent and is looking for new representation for his new deal. And that's usually sometimes the these big name agents like like the Rosenhaus brothers. They designed J von Hargrave recently. Because sometimes shame but sometimes Lower name guys have a depre- wasn't as Laura News. The first round pick but have not the biggest sports agents of the world. Because they don't WanNa take a chance on them and they stick through them and the first time they come up to get a big deal. They dropped her agents and go to a bigger name person. That'll get more money and the big name person knows that they get the money for them so it sometimes I think it kind of stinks for the guys that you know. Were with them for so long. But we'll see what happens with depre- one thing that I brought up in an article. That said the question was have we turned into A. What have you done for me lately? Fan Base where we only think back. We can't go beyond a year to say how we feel about people. How Bad Juju. He's not a number one. Bad Year from Conroy. He's not the answer. Oh steph onto it was hurt. We need to move on from him. He's always hurt even though we had a great season up until he got hurt. Ben Rothlisberger is going to be nothin' because he didn't do anything last year we forget about the things that they did. But we're also. What have you done for me lately? In the other aspect of it of duprey had a great year last year. Where was he the first four or was it? You know if we if responder per year we're going to get two thousand nine hundred ninety three. Are we going to two thousand seventeen debris? There's a big difference because I don't want to pay the two thousand nine hundred ninety pre price for two thousand seventeen by debris so I would have liked to have seen more than one year production. So that's just kind of my thoughts there but I also would like to keep the defense completely intact can of Arkansas any closer to a CBA. I haven't heard any reports since they had a meeting. This past week with the one before That's the last time I heard anything that they that right now. The biggest issue is the seventeen game. Season seems like That the owners want to have that as an option to add and the players know in order to add it. They're going to have to give up some stuff I know some people are thinking. It's going to be the whole marijuana issue. But apparently they've already they might have already agreed on that aside from the whole seventeen game thing. Alex wants to know what the steelers see Rudolph. I had an article ready to go about Mason. Rudolph that because of the new accusations new acquisition because of the resurfacing of the accusations against him I just felt wasn't appropriate to bring up at the time. And that is you can look based Rudolph's two thousand nineteen season you. You could do a point counterpoint. Like Brian and Tony doing articles on the website of of a season. You could completely spin it of how Mason. Rudolph was put in some tough circumstances. At times he played well and when he didn't there was reasons behind it. You could completely spin it. That Mason Rudolph was given some great circumstances and didn't come through. You could spend it either way and eventually. I'm going to do that article but I'm just waiting for some of the things that I down so just to say that there was nothing to see. Rudolph that's not. I don't feel that that's accurate but I also I mean some people that are very critical of Rudolph or People. That are also really critical. Ben Rothlisberger doesn't think he does much right so for some reason. Some people expect the quarterback to make the perfect region perfect throw on every snap and that's just not realistic at all snowman said about by debris signing him a drafters replacement. You're going to do one or the other and maybe even both here on Double T. Wants to know about the steelers trying to train the first round of a certain qb drops honestly with everything else at the steelers need. Ben Rothlisberger come back. I don't think this year addressed quarterback I really doubt just just because I don't know that you're going to get someone that has that much better than Mason Rudolph. So we'll see do I do. I think the defense will be for years to come. I think it can be and I think injuries will will will play a pretty big role in that. I'm going to see if we got rich back or not. He's he's finally. If you've got the issue fixed would've been here how we do. Are you better? I don't care the craziness on your end. Yes you sound completely fine to me so I had to do. A total computer restart and it locked up when it restarted. So then I have a hard reset so that was fun. There you go. Hey you go. I'll let you. I know you probably have been able to follow much at all or hearing. Actually I've pulled a pulled. The broadcast up on my phone have been good. Good do you. What do you think about this one? Do you think the defense will be elite for years to come? That's kind of hard to say because you're today's David. Nfl constant turnover. Yeah absolutely sorry. I just saw that. I had some private messages. Didn't realize they were from you so I I actually have an article coming out. Probably tomorrow writing this evening about how you know. T J watts is the new face. The franchise don't worry about what being steeler for a while because especially the way his rookie deal is going to you. Know the options they have there. With the fifth year. Option the franchise tag and everything and the getting up there in years probably on his last contract. And if he's not the not still good news for the steelers Ben. Rothlisberger that it's GonNa Lineup really good to where that money is going to shift into. T.j WATTS IS GONNA end up working out but one thing I brought up the thing. And you're like we all shoot Ben's on his last contract at funny because both England's when he did I would argue about he wants to already save Benz Benz three year. Contract was a bad because what happened this year. I'm like I'm not going to judge it on this year. Because what happens if he has to fantastic years. I've said I'll judge it when we get a little bit further down the road and it still might be a bad contract that they extended the last time but if the issue comes up for bands even wanting to play beyond this contracts. That's a good thing for the steelers because that means he's playing at a high level so that's a problem that will deal with if if that comes about. I got into this From from Richard. If it comes up I skipped so it might not come up that. Tutu. I'll bring up this one brothers giving her the question. I hadn't seen that yet. I'm really I'm really far behind the watch out. I just realized but I can't find to bring it up but he's going to be the receiver now. How much weight if I lost You know there's no chance that can get lost. I've lost like well. Everything is II switched. What side the lights on on lighting up my better side now. I have a better side. I yeah but actually. They're the better probably the backside or while better. I didn't know meaning that you have to look at my face. Yeah wasn't a compliment to my back. It was an insult to my front. I have lost about twenty five pounds. Thanks to Jefferson. Hartmann is has been trying to get me on some other stuff with with exercise. I have a long way to go. Don't worry I'm not going to be too thin. I've definitely got along. Go so some of these questions. A lot of these are answers to things that didn't get young and wanted to know if there's any chance of getting Dobbs back that ships sailed. He's under contract with Jacksonville. It's the same kind of thing with you. Know Number Twenty six the former number twenty six there in a contract to someone else. That's not something that you can bring him back so now getting into a lot of people with conversations answering questions that we had earlier. Yeah so I I like the great discussion between you. All when we're there. I think who is going to be the receiver. The steelers pay the big bucks and is he on the team. You think rich. What's what's wrong with instead of paying one receiver big bucks but we pay a couple of decent receivers medium bucks. Yeah era it just all depends on what a structure out your cap I I'm compiling cap numbers. I don't know if we're GONNA do an article with save one of our shows but looking at like what positions take up what percent of the salary cap and wide receivers pretty low. Because they're all young guys and it's not going to be able to stay that way because they're all gonna move on. I don't know that we're going to have another Mr third and fifth situation. Where where we have the league's highest paid receiver on her team. But I mean that's why. Say if people say well Judy's not a number one we don't pay them like a number one. I don't mind having three I really. I'd rather have. I'd rather have three twos than one one and three fourths. So that's just the way I look at it. So let's let's let's try to. Let's see no other way. They're staggered eventually. Juju is going to need a new contract this actually. This is his last year on this contract coming up so he's probably going to get some money. I don't know I don't know the because of the until there's a new. Cba can really afford to do much with him. So we'll see how that goes from there. Odessa said bridgewater could be viable backup. Qb And as we have said over and over in the show although he he sounds great the answer is worth what money with what money. We just can't allot any more money than one position. That's already sucking up so much of our salary cap. So so that's that's going that's just going to be a lot of people were saying that. Okay I'll wait that's your. That's your question again so to to the to do a lot of people. I love the discussion going back and forth back and forth. Okay here we go okay. I'll I'll go there. She'll fan seventy four. What about the Thomas? Dave comments that Ben quit on the team in two thousand nineteen it. That just reiterated my article that I had. I think it was last week since the show that I said the title of the article was when it comes to your steelers news. Local buy local go home grown you know New sources that actually cover the steelers. You know they come out with these ridiculous things. We've bought brought up several things on bleacher report. They said that the steelers had a massive hole at cornerback across from Joe. Haden that they didn't have any answer. There didn't even realize Steven Nelson was there this past year because he he had an amazing season that completely flew under the radar and just very other dump takes. That was very dumb. Take that Ben. Rothlisberger should have come back for a playoff push okay. Then they're like he had season entering surgery he still can't three not even clear to throw it on the team. I am will then Davis tried to say well? There are reports that he didn't have to have surgery..

"But I think that it should be very offensive heavy. I've gone on record saying I think that the steelers have more capable players at running back. Then they do. What other positions where they have holes? Although an upgrade at running back would be great. I don't think that's the biggest need when you when you really have to fill in other things other places so I'm more looking at offensive line tight. End Things of that nature but yeah I think it should be pretty much focused on offense. Do I know the exact surgery Ben had is what Michael Mallon we don't we don't? There was a report that it was not Tommy. John's but the steelers are not confirming or denying anything there are reports of what it is but I think that's something. Ben Cod tried to kind of keep private. So that's kind of how it would be so then. Bo wanted to know what I take with the second round pick. I kind of answered that I would take. It depends on. What's there if there's if there's a running back it's too good to pass up in that position. I wouldn't throw a fit if they took it. I don't WanNa see him reaching running back there. I would like I would my temple pool of positions of needs and take the best player available one of those positions and those positions for me are offensive line tight. End Edge rusher. And that's pretty much it. I think the steelers later in the draft might try to get some depth and some other places like safety. They couldn't even go safeties highs around but they have to to pretty good safeties there. So there's there's that that's that's mainly what I'm GonNa go. I'm GonNa see if not better audio from rich. Say Something Right I. I'm not getting anything from your even breaking up around even here too much. We've got some people throwing in some of their some of their suggestions of offensive line and one of those things so hold on just ahead so I want to see what else we got here. If McDonald's stays are they still drafting a tight? End early as what? Ajc wants to know. That's a great question. The steelers have to make a decision. What THEY WANNA do they're like I said Vance McDonald? It's a club option that they have to exercise by the start of the new league year. They could save five million dollars approximately if they move on from him but the question is. Are they going to have a viable tight end? That cost them less money than that. The only way I see that would be as if they are pretty. Sure GonNA draft one and that player then also has to work out for them so I also. Then there's the question of Nick Veneta free agent to the steelers traded for and had him for this year if the steelers end up keeping resigning. Gannett and keeping McDonald. I think that's an indication they're not gonNA go tight end very high in the draft but if it's even just one of them. I could then that still leaves it on the table for for them to go early and I still think they can get a quality tight end even not with their top picking the second round. I think there's a lot of promises. To tighten it out of Dayton tight. End Out of purdue I know a lot of people were high on the tight end out of Notre Dame so that they have some some options there and honestly when untold the combine when players. Really start to shoot up. The board is is when things really get interesting. Worst Institutional Cheating Patriotair Astros. That's hard to judge because we don't really know the extent of the Patriots. I don't think that it's come out. Well maybe we don't know the extent of the Astros I'M GONNA say I'M GONNA to say why the word I'm GonNa go with a push on that one okay so Getting some of the some of the same questions that people have already said summer interesting dwell like Red Blue Red Yellow or black. Yeah we're going with black if the steelers the steelers. Don't sign anymore quarterbacks. Before next season. What three quarterbacks do you keep? I'm it's GONNA BE ROTHLISBERGER AND RUDOLF AWAITS. Not Rothlisberger is if there's a problem with his injury and then when it comes to route off unless something else happens there. Those are the two healthy wise I would go with. I don't see them bringing in another quarterback mainly because money with what money. They've already allotted more to the quarterback position this year with a Sarah Kaplan they usually do percentage wise to spend more money on someone to come in as a safety net. You hope never steps foot on the field. I would rather than spend money on someone you to step foot on the field so I then I think it's just a race for that last one and I think it could be any of the three I it could be. It could still be hodges. It could be Paxton Lynch and it could be J. T. Barrett outta nowhere or it could be another name. That comes out of nowhere. Like hodges did last year so I think it's Rothlisberger Rudolph and anybody's guess so Ryan wants to know what played tackle. I was a left tackle for For most of my playing days and then got moved to right tackle at the end of highschool because Are running back as more effective running to the right and they wanted to put me over there Rather than we weren't throwing that much to protecting the blind side of the quarterback didn't matter quite as much I did not play football in college. I had the opportunity to but I did track and field in college instead. That was just just wh- with but yeah I was. I was a tackle And actually I should say I was also a blocking tight end for a little while just ask different formations. But it was a lot of fun. So is mad. Low Low key wants to know. Is Canada going to be the spark this off season? This offense needs. I think he could be if the utilize him and you know what you brought him in. Let him do some dynamic stuff. Um to help with a game plan and if it doesn't work then he's just your quarterbacks coach she just haven't got back and focus with the quarterbacks but to not even try to use his stuff. I think it would be foolish so once again. It skipped on me. Some people are asking about the running back Dobbins A. I saw some some stuff today. In comparison still punks article with some of the discussion in the comments about bringing up his ability as a receiver and his ability to to pass protect. And I think if the steelers are the steelers are going to draft running back and draft them. Hi It's got to be someone who can do these things in and beat up grade. Did the steelers want to take their tough top draft pick and not upgrade what they currently have. I WanNa see them do something. Where someone's going to be the guy before mid-season that's what I would seem or anything so that's a great question snowman. Well the steeler signed Ryan Shazier. I I don't know I they're going to. They're going to have him around in some in some capacity in my opinion. They're not they're not hanging out to dry and they want they also want to give him a chance that if he wants to come back to play that that he will ernest says he's looking turnabouts. Pouches play this year. Should we be concerned yes? Are we concerned about James Connors play? Are we concerned about juice? Misuse Schuster's play. Are we concerned about Ben? Rothlisberger is play about Stefan. Stewart's play. Yes? We should be concerned but it doesn't mean that we also expect them to come back now. Counts is a little different because of his age. Just like Ben Rothlisberger someone like James Juju Smith Schuster guys just a year. Rabou from the pro bowl that they have a bad year. They didn't have a good quarterback situation and they both met with injuries. That if they can stay healthy and ben stays healthy. I'd love to see them bounce. I would hope the pouncey could possibly be one of those people that plays better with Ben Rothlisberger. But we could be concerned but we shouldn't also shut the door on the possibility of still being the caliber player that he once was so steelers. Fan Seventy Four. Who stays and who are cap casualties? I think we're pretty sure that we know the Ramon foster will be kept cap casualty if I were to rank them in order of how of what I believe. Most likely cap casualties and go from there would go. Ramon foster one I go Anthony Tikolo too. I just don't see how they could keep them around with his lack of availability. Not being a starter. I still don't think he's the answer even if there's nobody pre And they could. They could get a decent cap relief from from letting him go. I want to put him to. I'm GONNA put Mark Barron Three. I would not mind keeping Mark Barron as depth. But he's pretty expensive depth the problem and that's what the steelers the way there and then I'm going to say Vance McDonald but personally I would like to see him to keep around. But that's just me. Just that's my order. Rajon if I said that right wants to know what three starters our trade before the draft nine. I like my steelers. I guess I'm a little bit too loyal. I'm not a guy that says I just trade. These guys I I like him because I wouldn't trade starter trade Bryan Switzer. I'd trade could. Who Else could I trade now? A lot of the guys are under contract that I would trade so but I don't know that anyone would take anything for him. The steelers used to be super deep offensive line. And you're like they traded Gerald Hawkins last year but after losing a couple of guys. The waiver wire throughout the season. I don't see the depth there either. This statement from Ryan Ryan Kellerman says they cut Vance and the next tight end isn't as good. Everyone said advance will wanna back. I agree I think you're right. Read says wouldn't mind being too tight end draft like the Patriots done before but yeah this is a question. I don't really have an answer to because I wanted to find this out myself. How did Seattle from Daddy's out Seattle Sign Greg Olsen today from Carolina though? We have to wait until free agency begins. I think it has to do with the manner in which he was released. Because it wasn't just an unrestricted free agent. Because he was released. I don't know that he has that he had to wait. Just Kinda like players that are steelers science futures contracts and stuff with other people. It has something to do with that but I can't say a hundred percent for sure. I should've known the Internet question. I want to know the answer to that question. So if someone puts in a live chat I will throw it up there here for Michael Malley. Dave does the bud decision waiver the draft in free agency and signing players on the roster. Is He worth it? Okay and and Michael. Says I love it? Run help.

"ike hilliard" Discussed on Behind the Steel Curtain

"Watch which is exactly what Jesse says. It doesn't matter what the names are. But after ARA wrestling discussion we had with the after party Thursday. That just I just had to summon my inner dwayne Johnson going the Rock Johnson in order to bust into one of his famous interruptions or a I should have used a fancier where there that he would he would give with with many of the his interviews which was great so it doesn't matter what the name is of the podcasts. But this podcast is a static. Qna because we are going to get to the live chat here soon as we can. First since I last week as soon as I enter the show boom up comes super chat from the artists that we call Ex. You smell what bad is cooking? Yes love it. Oh no this is already go. Daddy Buck that but ex asked question. I'm pretty sure it was. I'm pretty sure was a five dollar. I think it was five dollars bucks and a tip. He wanted to know was. Has there been a quarterback with the same injury as Ben Rothlisberger to critique? The answer is not exactly but selects but sort of the answer to that question was rich. Victim Jake the loan he had he had to actually have Tommy John Surgery in two thousand seven. So it's not the exact surgery but he came back the other thing is. He was thirty two when he had the surgery. Banda's little bit older than that with him coming back but you're also talking another ten years of medical advances. So he had Tommy John. Two thousand seven just so you know the Carolina Panthers that next year went twelve and four. Yeah he had a very good year. Had a very good year He actually had three thousand two hundred and eighty eight yards fifteen touchdowns twelve interceptions. You know those numbers didn't book decorate. But they they're great but they lost their first playoff game dino who they lost to the first round but it wasn't a first round. It was the second round of the playoffs. It was divisional weekend that would have been January. Vo Eight it was from the two thousand eight season as the bank season so it would have been nine. Yeah no idea. They lost to the eventual. Nfc champions who fell to the Pittsburgh steelers super bowl forty three. That is correct low key that had it in there. They lost to the cardinals. Gotcha in the playoffs. The cardinals then went on to go to the Super Bowl sailor so he had a good year. Now he didn't have the best. You're the next year. He had a lot more interceptions in a lot fewer touchdowns and he didn't but he didn't play the whole season long your but he played all sixteen games the following year and added twelve and four record. So doesn't mean that that's what we're going to get from Ben Rothlisberger but at least that tells you that it's something that can be done. So bro New steelers. Wide Receiver coach any thoughts. My first thought. Was You know first of all? It said that you had to say on the last podcast Bat. How you can place Ike Hilliard kept thinking Mike Taylor. That's awful. Obviously well I know why because typically I did. Obviously you didn't have a bunch of our fantasy leagues. No I know I know I did. At least once I recall having a couple of times so actually might have had in the year. I won the whole thing. I don't remember but Yeah he had. He had between regular season and playoffs thirty touchdowns as a giant eight season. But he had he had because he had twenty eight regular-season touchdowns in two playoffs. What's crazy is the two playoff touchdowns. Same game put that New York Order Day. He had two touchdowns on ten receptions one hundred fifty five yards in the NFC championship. Game for the giants. They took down if I remember. It was the vikings. There's like forty one to nothing they want. Nfc Championship Game Super Bowl. And unfortunately they. They felt that purple team that year. But that's that that was his biggest probably. Won't I mean especially because the stage had to be what I would consider his biggest game but now he's come to us from was with the Redskins the last few yes as I was telling you and I finally put it all together. So you've been with the redskins with Jake ridden. He had been with the redskins before Jay Gruden but he left did a quick stint fit was buffalo and then back with the redskins yet. Read actually sitting here. He had dolphins redskins and bills. I'm trying to think if the dolphins might have been at one of them. He was in the system wide receivers coach so interesting story about the about this. Higher Article V ensued. And it's honestly it's Brian. Anthony Davis his fault but we had some problems on the website. Today this came out at noon. I'm trying to get by. Espn story ready for twelve thirty. And I'm picking my son up from preschool which finishes at noon but the I didn't appre- right for the story because it's crazy how all the reports came down some people said Oh. I thought behind this curtain already. Already said that the that the other that mcclendon was hired we published a report we published report was that it was Dale Alley that actually. The first report mcclendon was the choice. Then Jerry Dulack came back on Monday and said everyone's your country and everything then do lack said late in the week. It was down to those two candidates so when the report came out when and the article that mcclendon was returning to South Carolina. Guess what we did. I say going to get it ready. I'm just going to write the article for Jericho Khatri to be the wide receivers coach than when it happens. Publish IT WILL. I did it. But there's there's a back story here at the beginning of last season early early on we knew there was going to be roster move coming for the steelers and we had a feeling it was right after they. It was after week one. Where like they're going to. They're going to sign to czar skipper to the practice squad and they're going to sign. Hodges because of the Joshua Dob straight so I got an article ready for that on Monday. O'brien ent Davis goes into the dashboard. Where we hold. Our articles sees my article that I have ready to go and report. Podcast is actually happened and it hadn't happened yet and it didn't happen in that way because skipper claimed off of waivers so so he's like. Don't write articles in there. That didn't happen like when I got to get them ready. So I go in and I throw in silly headlines so my headlines usually read something silly but I get everything else ready. The headline said the steelers higher. Jeff Hartmann is wide receivers coach. Well Luckily Jeff. Jeff jumped into to fix the article because already had a lot alike. We could've started over with a whole new hire but it had a lot of the process involved of how the other reports and other teams got there and therefore we had to change. Jeff Hartmann in the title to be Ike Hilliard. Well the problem is a lot of people. Don't realize this is. We have five different. Titles when we go to write these articles there's like a. There's a main there's the article title. There's the main page title. There's the social. There's a the search time there's a bunch of them. I already Jericho Contra filtering and all those titles I just didn't have on the main title Bryan wouldn't see it will. Jeff told me he got all the back end stuff and part of the back end stuff as you realize that autry so anyone else caught our tweets. We actually had a tweet. That had an article with his picture and said steelers tired Jericho. Khatri wasn't the name of the. What was the tweet? But that was the title of the article. That article is there for a few minutes on the website then we went in and changed it and there was a glitch in the system and when we tried to republish it. It didn't publish are inches so but we got it all straight out eventually so there for a minute. We've reported at Jericho. Khatri was the was. The was the higher but that was quite surprising. Because usually Jerry Bulaq. He's he's one guy read when he reports something. That's the way it was so the steelers really went under the radar with its higher. So do you think they made the right choice? Hello Yep we got a little bit static with you to your sound. Has Been Out of your by answering. Somebody's been all messed up here. Okay I'm you're you sound like a robot talking to me but I didn't catch center. I think at a higher I like to hire. I prefer I probably prefer to carry contrary sorry I was muted for a moment trying to figure out if it was your me by listening to it on my phone and they say it's robot rich so you got a little bit of static if we can try to work through that The biggest thing that I like about hilliard that we didn't get with the two candidates how `bout NFL experience as a wide receivers coach like a pure like is the main receivers coach because mcclendon was coming from college. Which I'm sure he would have brought a lot of the steelers you had contra who's been the assistant wide receivers coach and Carolina for the last. I think at least three seasons and it's not that he wouldn't necessarily been a good higher either but I like the fact that they got a higher of someone who has been not just assisted but he is done. He has been a wide receivers coach for some time in the NFL. So that's something that that that happened so you you're ready to see if he got if you've got your situation fix their rich don't shake your head but he's he's having some technical issues there still. We'll keep them on the screen there for we need to. I like the higher you got someone I mean when you have a receiver like tat that you hire and that was kind of something that I thought was countries. You're you're talking about a guy that has. Nfl experience playing the position and also has experienced coaching the position. I think in all. That's that's a pretty good idea what we're going to do now is this. Q. And A. We'll we'll see if I can if if we can get rich back here. Not Right now is good. Because he's muted. We're going to you all and he's gone. We're GONNA open up to you all to see what you would like to discuss anything you want to bring up. I'm open it up for questions from the live. Chat whether you just have some overall questions if you didn't catch the last show with actual stat geek. Show I told the story about my experience of being contact with. Espn over my coverage of coach. Tomlin and his and his interview with I take so we'll just see I don't know what to talk about so throw a question out there we already. Here's Ron Ron says Dave. Don't you think the draft should be focused on offense? I do I do and what's going on with that is I. Don't know that I'd go. As far as Lance Williams suggested the steelers these new draft offense in two thousand nineteen. I'm ready to go that far because I think they definitely. I think they'd even outside linebackers some point whether or not they have by Dupree. You're not just just to see what do you mind that being your top pick but but we'll see.

"ike hilliard" Discussed on Behind the Steel Curtain

"Great brother time every week. Big Bro Rich. How's it going all right? How're you doing? Welcome steeler fans yeah. I'm here I'm I've had a very interesting eventful day. We will get to talking about that later on in the show after we cover some other stats and we will also what I mentioned. We're going to go ahead and kick off to give some people that like to join in and get the notification and joining the live chat and watch live. Give some people a chance to make sure they're here. Just want to mention. There was some steelers news. Today the steelers hired a new wide receivers coach. It was neither of the candidates that were list that were reported as being the final two candidates. It was completely under the radar. No no the reports. We saw even mentioned this name. That the steelers hired Ike Hilliard. Who when the news came out. I talked to Jefferson Hartman. I gotTa See Jefferson. I can't I talked to Jeff Hartmann and I'm like I know that name but for some reason once they said the main Mike the only I could I could picture my brain was ike. Taylor Taylor is not any steelers. Wide receivers coach. I said but I know the name I know the name. I said he was a player so of course I looked it up real quick to see that he played twelve years in the NFL. He was the seventh overall. Pick in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven to the New York. Giants played for the giants eight seasons and then played four seasons in Tampa Bay. Which interesting connection in his time as a receiver Tampa Bay? Who was the defensive backs coach? Me I mean that's all it's obvious it was Mike Tomlin so there was a kid. There is the connection there somewhere. So He's been the wide receivers coach for the Redskins for the last. Oh my goodness it's been a while. But he's been there when he was there he. He came when Jay Gruden Kim. Cha didn't shake Gruden pick up and bring him in he was. He was one year before he was there was gone and King. Back Emerging Gotcha. Yes yes that was some steelers news that we have. We are actually going to talk more about that higher as to let you all know we are once again. We're going to split this into two shows. Try to keep it to nice tight. Shows one will be out in podcast form on Wednesday morning. The other should out Wednesday afternoon and that will be the QNA the static Q. and A. We're going to. We're going to start off talking there. We're going to talk a little bit more about that higher but that was steelers news. Plenty of other steelers news that we've had over the weekend to start the week it was just GonNa say. We don't usually hear from taller this time of year and we heard from Tom. But we're going to. We're going to dive into the stat geek stuff. We just hear from Mike Tom. Hi Bike common made an appearance. You know Kinda say. It wasn't just you know he said something than the steelers. Put it out on that. I mean that was and not only that I've seen some people who are some of the harshest. Mike Tomlin critics say. Wow that's our head coach. It was great. We're GONNA talk about that in a little bit because there's more to that story that we WANNA make sure that we get out there so let's cover our topic and then we'll have some more time to discuss that after we can go on and our thanks man for the update on the penguins. I do that. That's part of the reason we start a little bit later. Go to get stuff set up until intermission. They were a five point five to two. What's great is it. The Penguins win tonight. They take over first place in the Metropolitan Division. There's only one point behind the capitals. Who played last night and lost? Think it was last night I get my nights mixed up but anyway they're playing tonight so they have a chance to move in the first place. So as you know we're all steeler fancier but at least we're also penguins fans I know a lot of you are as well so turnovers we're not talking takeaways. We're not talking about the good stuff to talk about. We're GONNA talk about the crummy stuff to talk about. We are talking about turnovers and unfortunately the steelers are in the midst of a NFL leading streak that we do not really wish to discuss but we must and that is their their streak of consecutive games with at least one turnover do you know. Do you remember what that number is real old on twenty three? It is twenty three. Here's the better question. Do you remember the last game where they did not have a turnover? I think? Bradshaw was playing quarterback Joe Jokes. That was a good one. The branch was playing quarterback. Though actually it was. It was very significant. Because now the wrong game. I'll say it was a Thursday night game but it was the year before. That was the Thursday night game that you and I were sitting at. This one was a game where after the steelers gave up gave up a touchdown of letting the Carolina Panthers March right down the field. They came back scored on the first play. And then a couple of plays later scored a defensive touchdown and next thing you know it was twenty one to seven and the steelers never looked back as they defeated the Carolina. Panthers scored over fifty points at not having a turnover a Thursday night. So that's the last time back in two thousand eighteen. They have had a turnover every game sense. Now the question is how much are these? Turnovers affecting the outcomes the outcome of games. What do you think? Do you think the big deal? Yeah I do yeah. It's well first of all you don't want to turn the ball over 'cause you you're giving them opportunities to score when you're not so if you just WANNA play Geeky numbers. Just the numbers themselves should tell you not good. Oh and I have geeky numbers because you have geeky. Geeky numbers ever well. First of all the steelers lead the NFL in takeaways. This past year where they went absolutely nuts. They jumped from fifteen in two thousand eighteen. All the way up to where they had double that with I think either ten or eleven games of the season. It was crazy and they ended up with want to say it was week. Eleven has something like that it double that they ended up with thirty eight. Great number. Great totals the problem with that with the thirty eight. Takeaways was what was there. What was their turnover margin? What was there plus minus for the season Twelve now it was only eight. They lead the League in takeaways and only had a plus eight only at a plus eight. And that's what hurts. That's what her even when we when their defense gave our offense opportunities. We ate didn't take advantage of those opportunities a lot. Plus half the time we were just given ball right back. It seemed like yeah. There's some some of these Games will break down into. The steelers had thirty turnover in two thousand nineteen. Now we're not just going to focus completely on two thousand eighteen. We're going to put it in context. We can talk about it. Moving forward just just to kind of put that in context had twenty six in two thousand eighteen so there it is and so so some people like Ryan said Duck and Mason for you. They only have four more turnovers in the year. Before when Ben Rothlisberger Burger Played Sixteen Games? So it's not just it wasn't just that the steelers had nineteen interceptions. Eleven fumbles lost of their nineteen interceptions. Rudolph had nine. Hodges had eight Rothlisberger had one and the other one went to shoot James Connor now wasn't James Connor Because shoot ahead Jalen Samuel. That's at home against the Baltimore Ravens when the wildcat worked so well the week before they come out against the Ravens the pretty sure it was the first play of the second drive and interception deep in their own territory. So but yeah you're right. You knew it was done. I know that formation. Yup and that's what happened there so even though Rudolph had more playing time had more starts and everything you only had one more interception than hodges the two of them neither one of them were great with with that Each had a four interception game which really added to those numbers. Rudolph's was against the browns. And unfortunately we saw hodges when we were there on the last home game on Sunday night against buffalo so with those guys a lot of it was when they had a boy to have them. What was interesting was the fumbles? There was eleven. Fumbles lost by the steelers to two players. Were credited with two. Fumbles lost on the season. Two players are. I'M GONNA I'M GONNA be oppressed if both of them. James Car James. Connor was crazy. I say that they didn't give that fumble to him did they. I I would have said James Connor because he had the fumble in the San Francisco game and the the fumble in the rams game. They did not give that fumble on the wildcat played a James Conner. They gave it to the other person who ended up with two which was the. Aren't they Johnson? So the Johnson because he fumbled the first series against Cincinnati which gave them a field goal their first game and they only points. They scored that game and then they charged him with that fumble against the rams. I'd be really impressed now. I said the rams the rams wrong gave you and I were both at not the Buffalo Buffalo. That's ramps yeah I do. I were both in the stadium but it was the wrong game. You're about that. I'm going to be oppressed if you get the other one with two. Fumbles anyone in the live chat. Thinks they know who it was. That lost two fumbles in two thousand nineteen..

steelers NFL Mike Tomlin James Connor Penguins Ike Hilliard James Car James Jefferson Hartman Mike Tom Jay Gruden Redskins Ben Rothlisberger Burger wildcat Tampa Bay New York rams Panthers Giants Taylor Taylor
