I i've been following iena informatics and eric. I think it's been pre pandemic that i had you and yvonne on talking about the program and it It has always excited me about you. Know what informatics is about. And i'm very curious to hear how you have fared over the course of the last year and a half and and we'll get into you know get into some of the awards that you've recently Receive but why don't you guys Both told me a little bit about what you do with respect to informatics and and we'll start with. We'll start with eric. And eric can give us a quick overview and and joanna tell us a little bit about what what you specifically do yeah awesome. Yeah we're released to be back on. Burt so i informatics it's really. We're just a free of educators. We're really trying to advance on genetics and genomics education in schools. But the difference is we really take place base. Ace ethics centered approach to this right and so looking holistically at what these technologies can bring not only to our communities right but to the to the global community at large. I'm in so You'll any has been kind of at the forefront of promoting not just curriculum but also supporting teachers in all of our schools here in hawaii To really think outside the box and innovates words Really putting these technologies within a good local context but also in the hands of students. Nobody's been able to reach. You know over a thousand students locally here since we spoke and You know the pandemic you know. We trust on and continue to figure out ways to support the schools And another development of courses are are the growth of our teams joanna here. We couldn't do this. I met eric in august of twenty nineteen When i was teaching at one of the high school And so for you know when he came into my classroom It was super awesome for my students. Because like eric was staying on the informatics curriculum and the program helps All kinds of students to kind of access the curriculum that is super high. Second and in some cases is not really available to students in high school laboratories When i started doing some of the things that my students experienced when eric came into my classroom. I did that when i was like college. Like maybe my last year in college and then doing my research After i graduated and so The different kinds of programs that students can get into when eric was in my classroom. We looked at identifying Gmo papayas and so they brought in Papaya leaves and papaya fruit. And we're able to speak or to extract cnn determined whether or not the papaya that was in the back yard or the papaya that the bought in the grocery store was genetically modified or not necessarily one example of one of the curriculum pieces. That informatics and eric has developed so so the ability to really look closely at the dna and compare it to. Let's see the whatever whatever standard. You're you're basing it on if it's a looking at a gym or markers or what have you in terms of the kinds of dna that you're looking at is it. Is it primarily You vegetables and fruits or are you also looking at you know species of of You know the in the in the alawite canal you know in your backyard there. I think judy program. Every i mean all species or any kind of organism that. You're interested in when eric was in my classroom in addition to the gym. What types of variance are going through communities and this is something really exciting new that we're going to hopefully bring more and more schools.
