"To president of business operations those words of the journal Sentinel's, Tom in this morning's Trudel said no way that GSA online. We're efforting taboo, grabbing some phone issues. But I guess we can still bet this around the studio as much as this is a reward for jobs well done in both cases, Doug. These are also meant to keep other teams from poaching. These two big talents. These two. Rising stars take about a Milwaukee to other places. I think it would be probably more for David Stearns than it would be for Rex lessons. I think Rick is more of a lifer here, Milwaukee you went to Nicolay high school in our that he worked for the Los Angeles angels for a while as well as the Disney company back when he was working and living in Los Angeles. But for David Stearns, I mean, this is someone who has kind of hopscotched around major league baseball until he really found his footing here in Milwaukee. I is the general manager now as you mentioned as the president of baseball operations, the San Francisco Giants they were replacing their longtime general manager, Brian Sadie. And because look they had had a lot of success. But had also had a couple of really down seasons as well. So the giants saying to market and Osceola brewers owner, look, we'll promote them we think that president of baseball operations is the title that we would like to give him that's about as high as you can possibly go. He's just your general manager and to your point, gene. No, we'll promote him to. We just need to hammer out the details of exactly what the contract extension is going to look like when you've got a talent like, David Stearns. And this is by no means a slant on records done a fabulous job. When you've got a guy like, David Stearns. You gotta keep him. We've got Tom record on the phone now on WTMJ. Good morning, sir. How you doing? Hey, guys. How you doing? We're just okay about these promotions Bruce handed out yesterday for Stearns and Slesinger, and Doug pointing up Sturt your Slesinger, probably a lifer here in Milwaukee. But for Stern's, this is the way to keep the hands off site around his neck to the other teams may have wanted to take them away from us. Yeah. I think that's the key to gene dog. I, you know, more so than the extension. I think it's the title of the giants early in the year. This has the giants. They had their president of business operations title open and had reached out to and on here. To allow them to interview size. But so the more and more people reach out other teams reach out the harder would be send them off. And they're sort of an unwritten rule in baseball that you don't stop a guy from being promoted if he gets an offer from other teams, but lateral moves are different. You know, you certainly don't entertain those or allow your employees to be enemies dead. So he's president of baseball operations. Now, that's pretty much the biggest title, you can give someone running the baseball ops and Rick Slesinger gets equal title of president of business operations. So they've definitely got you know, the two people they want at the top of their respective operations now. And I mean why not right? I mean, these guys are doing great job. No. This is in ticket sales are booming so rich lessons, you're obviously doing a great job and David Stern goes from rebuilding to one game of the World Series in years. Nobody saw that coming does this change anything more than maybe the number on their paycheck and the title on their business card for either one of them. Well, it's nothing wrong with changing that number on your goes up. Not down. But you know, what I think there's a there's a sense of stability that you want in an organization they'll stars either publicly or privately probably reward people working for him. Now, you want that stability, you wanted to have your bosses are gonna be you want to know the guys he'll be there for the long term. The brewers have never told us how long Stearns was science for to begin with. But it's my understanding it was five years. So you had two years left on it. They didn't have to do this now. But again it had to do with changing his title and calling off the wolves. Elsewhere. And you know, what guys when when I talked to stirs on the phone yesterday. I got this vibe that he was of overwhelmed by how he felt about the walkie the brewers the fans everything reception, he has gotten he's been here the excitement and buzz around the team last fall, I think he's really decided man. This is a good place to be, you know, the fans loves us here. We have a great ball parks. The teams on the move off. I think he was really taken aback a little bit that he didn't expect to be embraced like this and to have mutual feelings back. You know, he has a he has a relatively new wife a couple of years and a new baby. And he's just getting his family started. And they sort of decided why not stay in Milwaukee. Why not raise our family here? No offi. So there was just kind of cool talk. Now, he's still a young guy of what he's thirty four. So he he he just. Has a warm embrace. It's hard to say when it's five degrees outside. Why don't we get till Sunday? When he sees the credit brewers deck they've been sold out for weeks now for that event to the journal sentinel, Tom hide record joining us live on WTMJ thinking warm thoughts time, we'll see you Sunday. Yeah. It's going to be nice to be inside that day. No kidding. Take care, sir. Seven twenty eight a WTMJ time. Now for news about your money. Here's bread Ellen. "State of the union address officially postponed. We were planning on doing a really very important speech in front of house and the Senate everybody else's there. Let's work together. We can welcome you to the president and speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi after the president announced he would not give the annual address until after the partial government shutdown ends. Let's get into that decision with Mark laudner from the RNC. He's a former special assistant to President Trump and former press secretary to vice President Mike Pence. Good morning, Mark. Good morning. Thanks again for coming on. So is this the best decision to postpone this speech? Well, I disagree with the decision by the speaker to yank the invitation from the president, you know, let's remember she I cited security concerns, which the secret service and the department of homeland security widely ridiculed and debunked. So this is nothing more than the speaker playing politics. But she has the ability to do that a speaker of the house and. I'll give the president a lot of credit. There's a lot of people, including me on Twitter a few weeks ago that suggests that he takes this message out into the middle of the country are down to the southwest border because the constitution does not require them to do it on Capitol Hill or in the house or in Washington DC, but out of respect to the institution out of respect to the history of doing that speech in the house chamber, the president said that he will delay until after the shutdown is over the nets, right? He could take the speech on the road. You just can't doesn't have the ability to do it in the chamber. But at this point, what gets lost in all. This is the fact that the government is not open. Do you see any middle ground at all to get the federal workers at least back to work and paid again, and then they can ago she further, unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's anything happening right now. The president made a good faith effort over the weekend last weekend. What he offered a proposal which included many of the priorities. A lot of the funding requests at the Democrats had had asked for included protections at least temporarily. For Dhaka and TPS recipients while they tried to work through this and and a bigger oak immigration overhaul. And so far we've seen nothing. But no from the Democrats, not even a counterproposal nothing to say. Well, here's your plan. Here's our plan. You'll be tried to find a way to meet in the middle. The Democrats haven't offered a plan at all. Well, I think they've offered a plan. And it was something that Republican senators even had agreed to months ago, and now won't agree to I think we've gotten too far into the weeds here, but here in Colorado love your take on our GOP Senator Cory Gardner. He's expected to break with his party today intending to vote for a clean funding Bill that would open the government with no border security strings attached. What would you say to him? Well, I think each each individual member of of the the congress has to what they think best represents the needs of their district. I can tell you though, that I know also that Senator Gardner and Republicans believe we have to secure our border, and we we've seen right now that the Democrats have no intention of actually following through with border security when the president asked me Pelosi a couple of weeks ago in the situation room that if they open the government immediately would she vote on a border security Bill that included money for a barrier thirty days later, and she said, no. So this is a problem that we have to address congress kick the can down the road for too long and the president wants to see end. And so I understand what we're Senator Gardner is gonna make you decision. I went those votes come today. But ultimately, we've got to secure the border, and that's what the president's committed to its Mark laudner with the RNC. Thank you so much for your time. Mark, we thank you. You're fading today has big moves from IBM United Technologies in PNG fueling an early morning rally. The Dow jumping nearly three hundred points before shedding those gains. So there's one key leaving indicate that we wanna pay attention to net. Flicks. Stockpiling again today now down nearly ten percent since its earnings report last week. This is a trend. Remember that we saw back in October. Netflix spell seventeen percent in the month after earnings report than the market followed suit in the months afterwards. So are we? Seeing the same move. Again, is Netflix the canary in the coalmine guy. Well, I think it might be and seems pointed this out since the fall if you go back as you mentioned that report in October. The stock initially went higher reverse went lower within a couple of weeks he s and p followed I think that's what's going to happen. Now, listen doubt was up one hundred and seventy two hundred points to get it. Yes. And p was only up five and a half six you mentioned the reasons why I still think look if not a re-test to the downside. It's pretty close. I think Netflix gets us there. I think Netflix straights three hundred before trades three fifty. Yeah. This is definitely something. I've been watching since the fall. But you gotta remember Netflix was up from that low fifty percent that was a hell of a hell of an overbought situation that you would net flicks. It deserves to come off. I do think it will be indicative of a sell off of the overall how much was it up from January first to the highs before earnings though. I mean, it also was on a tour toward run. Oh, yeah. I'm with argue that it's the same sort of pattern. Although this. On a compressed timeframe. And I think it looks a heck of a lot like the market to your point though. Stephen you've been pointing this out. I think it's been great because this market January has been absolutely explode him into the upside especially in the last week and a half. Let's call it. And then suddenly you'll look net. Netflix. What run I mean? I know it because I actually own some net flicks. I was looking for a pullback Mel because I've been trying to do this by Reich strategy against it for a while. Now where I can buy back and roll it up. I actually just executed again yesterday. So I'm okay with an I was actually hoping it would get back to these levels. I don't know that it necessarily has to bring down. I don't know whether the S and P S detest lows or or if Netflix has to go back down to test lows because I think when we look at the numbers as we're getting through earning season. Particularly today, we had IBM we had United technology. We had Proctor and gamble. That. Really did put the Dow up in a great spot, but Facebook, and some of the NASDAQ stocks started to sink a little bit as the day started to go off. Well, so we're having this discussion because ultimately Netflix is one of those names that is a high multiple stock. That's all about growth. And if you look at it. Today's earnings the reason IBM the reason UT X, these stocks are outperforming his their specific things around these companies that are reasons why people are rallying UT ex. We don't need to get into that. But that's all about UT ex dynamics IBM all that IBM dynamics look at the financials the reason the financials rallied as much as they did was because frankly, they were mis-priced net. Flicks is if they're miss price to the downside, if anything in my view, and this has been my view, Netflix is misplaced to the upside..

"One zero six nine AM seven forty KCBS KCBS news time, six twenty one. We are starting to see more signs of a moon space race weeks after China landed a probe on the dark side of the moon. The European Space Agency is announcing plans to start mining the moon for natural resources by the year. Twenty twenty-five for more. We're joined live on the KCBS ring central Newsline by Alex Alary, associate professor in Carleton university's aerospace engineering program. Thank you for joining us this morning, this plan to mind, the natural resources. There is that something that can be done with machines. Or is this mean, we're going to have to put some sort of a a human space station on the moon. Mr. There was a question. Sorry. What was the question again? That's okay. The question was will this be able to be done with machines remotely or will? We have to put men on the moon to do this. Well, that's a good question. I think that there are two issues here. The first one is that how far is robotics automation technology, and there's no doubt in the past few years post decade, or so, but I and robotics has advanced enormously over that period. So the prospect of actually doing much of this the required operations. Robotically is actually much more realistic today, perhaps it may be may have been a decade ago. Let's talk a little about this notion of fuel from the lunar surface. What are we talking about? Here is this something that's easily burned in a rocket ship. Or does some sort of manufacturing have to happen? What is this? Especially be using hydrogen oxygen extracted from water and other resources, essentially oxygen self for the minerals. The water itself will require some kind of pricing. Here is probably the easiest extract. Some people are using heat to boil water this actually in in the regular older sort itself. The problem becomes when when you split into separate components hydrogen oxygen, and then have to store it, particularly for hydrogen hydrogen is actually pretty tricky to store because you have to stores are very low temperatures twenty about twenty Kelvin which at twenty degrees above absolutely right. So the storage will the extraction isn't so much of the problem is more the separation the storage issue. So. The the primary goal is to actually generates Voss volumes of this hygienist. The propellant in oxygen is the oxidant to us in rockets that can basically launched from the moon and back again in introducing you. I mentioned the European Space Agency seems to be leading the charge on this. Could we end up seeing some sort of international fight breaking out over who gets to to mine these resources. That's a very interesting prospect. I think the fight if it's going to happen is likely going to be the the major triumvirate, which is the United States, Russia and China. The Europeans almost certainly will basically, obviously, we'll tend to work with the United States as much as possible in cooperation for prospective point of view. No one can actually claim resources from the moon from a legal perspective. However, it's a bit of a grey area. Because once you've put assets on started to extract stuff than the material the product itself is she potentially own -able by by the people who actually extracted. Thank you for the tennis warning, Alex Ellery and associate professor at Carleton university's aerospace engineering program. "We'll check trends in our next segment right now, though, the IMF has released its latest global growth forecast while the. Ahead will include an update on US home sales. Plus, a snapshot of the manufacturing sector to talk about it. We're joined by Tom Hudson week ahead columnist at McClatchy Tribune, news service is based in Miami, Tom. Let's begin with this update. It looks like they're not seeing much of a change to the US but other areas, especially the euro zone, some changes. Yeah. Very much so softening demand in Europe coming from the International Monetary Fund. The the group is expecting the global economy to grow essentially at its weakest level in three years, but it doesn't paint a great picture, and you layer that on top of the the GDP numbers. We got out of China over the weekend which against at six or six and a half percent, still inviable, certainly but out of China Representative pretty significant slowdown. You've got some headwinds building on the economic front outside of the United States. While obviously the United States is dealing with the partial government shutdown and lots of. Concerned about what the coming deadline self-imposed deadline on the trade tariffs with China is going to mean for a lot of US exporters. So still lots of uncertainty on this holiday this IMF global economic forecast. It does not provide a whole lot of stability or shorts that that things are going to really pick up any steam as opposed to just kind of grind ahead worldwide this year. In fact, the IMF managing director Christine Lagarde said after two years of solid expansion. The world economy is growing more slowly. And she says it's facing a significantly higher wrists. Yeah. Across the board. Right. I mean, a lot of geopolitical risks certainly a lot of domestic risk. We for instance, haven't seen South American economy, Brazil, especially has pulled itself out of recession, but it's not exploded with any kind of robust economic growth. Japan remains an employer. It's been for a good long time in the United States grinding ahead to two and a half percent GDP. Maybe we're going to be in the case where it's the least dirty shirt again in the global laundry basket. So to speak. All right. So let's move forward into some of the other data, obviously, global growth important, President Trump back and forth with the fed for for quite a while. But seems like that's blown over now. Blown over in terms of the the statements coming out of the president and the Twitter comments that he was making regarding the Federal Reserve. But I gotta tell ya Cisco. I mean, what's interesting here is the Federal Reserve is moving is in its quiet period. Now. So you're not gonna hear much talk out of the Federal Reserve this week as it is looking toward its first meeting a twenty nineteen next week a two day meeting, and you know, for years, the fed has been very clear with the market that in terms of its decisions on short-term interest rates is going to be dependent on what the economic data tells it well, increasingly with the partial government shutdown. It's not getting that economic data from the government. The Commerce Department is shutdown some new home sales due out this week not going to happen. Durable goods orders due out this week. Not going to hit the tape at all more and more reliant on frankly, just the Federal Reserve regional banks and their ability to suss out what's happening in the region the United States as well as these private. Providers of economic data like the institute of supply management and Redbook retail sales are gonna take on at least for the short term probably more important than they have in the past. I'm wondering here for the fact that we're probably several weeks away March could be the next rate hike. If if that's when it's bad this back and forth might get ramped up again. Yeah. It it certainly could. And I think you know, it's the reserve is obviously always worth watching here. But in this era that were in this thirty one days of a government shutdown how the drop off in government economic data is impacting planning and analysis at the Federal Reserve is going to be fascinating to listen to next week and for investors and not traders. But for the investors this must be a kind of a an unquiet time. You know, you you wanna you wanna get in their market did well today, blocked, whatever. But he died in January. He's been a great month. Right. I mean, but let's not forget what Tober November. And December were like, it was a bloodbath for long-term investors. But long-term investors do need to take some kind of solace in the fact that the horizon is out there. Earning season is in full swing right now. And with the lack of government economic data that provides even more impetus on. What corporations are saying and teasing out from these earnings calls what these large companies can tell us about the broader economy Johnson and Johnson IBM United Technologies, Texas, Instruments Ford, all of them. Posting results this week in all of us all of that giving long-term broad diversified investors. A picture of not only what the US economy looks like. But really what some of these multinational companies are experiencing especially in Europe. Now with the with some of the softness there as well as what they're experiencing China. That's going to be important for long-term investors. Thanks for joining us today. Tom Hudson week ahead columnist at McClatchy Tribune news services in Miami up next. What's driving lower gas prices? And can they last WBZ news time twelve fifteen? Stay.
