S&P 500 is higher though, that is up 8 points at the sell off of two tenths of a percent. The Dow, 40 points slower. That's now a tenth of a percent and the tech heavy NASDAQ 100 bought the best levels of the session. 41 points higher right now that is up four tenths of a percent. We check the markets for you every 15 minutes during the treaty day right here on Bloomberg radio. I'm John Tucker That is your Bloomberg business flash Paul. John Tucker, thank you so much. We appreciate it. We are awaiting remarks from President Biden from The White House remarks regarding hurricane Ian and the federal response. And when he comes up to the podium, we'll bring those remarks to you live. In the meantime, let's check in with Brian Sullivan Bloomberg whether reporter he's been busy this last few days. Brian, it looks like hurricane Ian is left Florida, but it's not done yet, is it? No, we're going to have another landfall this afternoon probably after 3 o'clock on the South Carolina coast. All right, so yeah, okay, Brian, still there, bud? Yeah. Okay, so all right, it's gonna look like it's gonna hit South Carolina, right? Yeah, so it's gonna come in at South Carolina. It's gonna have a storm surge on the good news. If there is good news about a hurricane hitting the United States, you said it looks like it may spare Charleston, South Carolina, some of its worst. Damages. Right, Brian, give us some of the updates from Florida. What's the damage like there and how are people coping? The damage is really catastrophic. There are in the process of doing a three part search for survivors and people who are injured or may have died as well. They are in their second phase of this three part search and so far, it looks like the deaths are around 20 or a little higher than that Property damage is really catastrophic. As you saw, probably the pictures of the water up over the roofs of these houses, it's going to take probably weeks or months to figure out just how much it costs, but it would be north of $70 billion probably. Just to clarify the president will be speaking this morning and we'll bring that to you. The remarks this morning will be in the east room for the Jewish new year celebration. Remarks regarding hurricane Ian will be at a time later to be determined. Brian down in Florida here, I mean, the damage is obviously extensive here. Is there any sense as to estimate for kind of how bad it was because it just seems historic some of the images we see on the screen. This was a historic storm. This is probably the strongest storm to hit southwestern Florida in recorded history, which goes back to 1851. It is one of the strongest storms to hit the United States. In general, in any terms, since 1851, the damage throughout that area, especially in Lee county, looks overwhelming. I mean, you have whole roads that are just completely washed away. Bridges out to some of those barrier islands that are impassable. So people are trapped out there. There's just it's like I said, it's going to take months to figure this out. Brian, let's look forward to this evening in the rest of the weekend. What is the expectation that Ian does for the next couple of days? I'm reading on the Bloomberg that the impacts at least today Friday are not going to be to the extent that we saw in Florida in recent days. They won't, it's not as powerful. It came into Florida as a category four and it's going to hit South Carolina as a category one, which is significantly weaker. The damage will be, though, it can still push 5, 6 feet of water up on shore and that's a very flat area down there. So you can get a lot of inland flooding. And then on top of that, you may get up to a foot of rain through most of South Carolina right about a half a foot of rain through North Carolina and Virginia and that includes some of the mountain areas. So as you know, The Rain hits the mountains and that turns into massive flash flooding and so we could still see some damage all the way through tomorrow. Brian, talk give some perspective on this hurricane season. How has it been year to date? And how much longer do we have to deal with this this year? So the hurricane season was pretty strange, actually. We've had a few we had a few storms very early in the season and then we just went into this lull that lasted all the way through August, which is very rare. And then we had a burst of activity, especially in the last ten days here with Ian and then earlier we had Fiona that hit Puerto Rico and the Canadian maritimes. We are probably in the last week of the most active phase of the Atlantic season. So we'll get through next week and we should be in good shape. And then it just starts to trail down. We'll get storms, obviously we'll get storms in the Weston Caribbean. And that's not to say we can't have damaging storms because sandy was a late season storm. Everyone should remember that. A lot of your reporting Brian's about the impact on energy on power right and folks staying connected. What is the kind of recovery efforts and also forward planning to mitigate some of that? So it looks

"The next couple of days here. I guess we just heard that South Carolina is really embracing for it. I guess the question is, you know, what kind of strength do you think will have when the forecasters are saying it if it comes back to land? So the latest forecast is for it to regain category one hurricane strength. It's going to go out over the Gulf Stream that warm river of water that's just off the coast and the Atlantic and it'll drop power from that and fury from that. Right now the forecast is for a 7 foot up to a 7 foot storm surge in Charleston, South Carolina, which I don't know if you're familiar with Charleston at all, but the low country. Yeah, somebody can cry in the city flood. So it doesn't take much to cause a disaster there. And I hate to think what would happen if a 7 foot storm surge came in. Walk us through what a storm surge really is. Is that like a tsunami in a sense? Is it because the water literally rise that high? What is it? So the hurricane is if you imagine it like a giant bulldozer and as it moves across the ocean, it's pushing the ocean in front of it. And the low pressure inside the hurricane will actually lift the ocean underneath the storm up and so as the storm comes into shore, you're exactly right. It doesn't have the ferocity of a tsunami per se. Sometimes it does, but most times it doesn't. But the water just rises and rises and rises. And it comes in fast enough. You can't outrun it. In a couple, I just heard that reports of a storm surge around 12 to 18 feet at Naples. Which seems like, you know, I've spent a lot of time in Naples. That would be over my head and most of the places I go. Well, that's why they, you know, when they photos evacuation

Thank you so much chef for that to Anne, let us get back to our guests and still with the later Pence president of Pence wealth management. The thing is the moment that if you stay in cash is going to be eroded by inflation, if you go into these markets as they are right now, they're going to be eroded by the markets. What do you do? Well, the two year notes are certainly very attractive. Today where you can get if you hold it to maturity even though potentially interest rate will still rise in the short term, but you can get a two year note today at 4.25 almost. So for the very first time in a long time, since 2007, you're actually getting a return on fixed income. So you don't have to just keep it in cash. But even some of the money markets are paying two and a half percent and higher. So there is a yield for the very first time. And yes, it will be avoided by inflation. If you leave it there for a long time, it's really more a little bit of your allocation to have it in a parking place, but certainly not long term cash is not a long-term investment. Yeah, if you wade back into the markets we were talking about trying to figure out when the valuation becomes sort of appealing, talking about a payment processor with a big name. It may not be one on your list. But PayPal, it was over $300 and it's now at 84, and yet the forward PE is still 21 and the trailing 30. So is it still too expensive when you look at something like that? Yeah, so I can't comment on specific name, but do some holdings in the payment plan in the payment area that are still have high P E and don't warn it. But there's many others that do and maybe an ETF might be a better way to play this market. So you're going to have that diversification of many of them. But the consequence itself, the idea that they are really a good inflation hedge is definitely there because consumers are still spending. And they're going to spend more money. And so without doing much, they're going to earn more. So we do like that area. And then, of course, the defense. Are we seeing QT now making itself felt? A draining of liquidity in the system, and that's perhaps a really making fundamentals worse in some ways. And increasing fear out there and that's why we're seeing a real rates up. You know, there's still a lot of liquidity in the market. I mean, the fed put in $5.6 trillion, and this is what we have inflationary is because all that liquidity, there's a lot of money in the money markets. But I do think probably it's kind of the hidden QT reduction that maybe hit in the market. No one has really come out and said that yet, but I'm sure it's going to start hitting it. Sooner or later, but the yields are really going up because the Federal Reserve kind of came out as you know and said, hey, we're going to go to 4.6 by next year. And the market immediately wants to get there before the fed actually gets there. This is anticipated in the market. So really, market hit surprises and the September 13 inflation number, CPI number really was a surprising even though it's just a small increase, but when you expecting a lower inflation, you get an even a small tick of higher inflation. It really is why we add today is the surprise and the downside of the market didn't come there from inflation. Okay, so you talked about the two year at the moment yielding 4.34%, which looks pretty attractive. You talked about payment processors and defense. And one other area you like is dividend paying companies. Do you find that those are not too expensive and are you talking about companies especially in the utilities area or Staples or where? Well, it's amazing because you have kept doing a paying check today. That's actually yielding because it's been one of the areas with the NASDAQ, hitting 30% now, no more. That is actually starting to have a yield, so you're able to if you have the stomach to hold this volatility a little bit, you're able to nibble into these companies and get some dividend payments while you wait. And if the fundamentals are there, I mean like the one thing you said, which I want to repeat in the beginning is that bear markets do end. Times like these, people when you see the market go down, day after

"On WGN a little technology in the first hour today insurer from Senate will talk to us about the new Apple software. You've got that little smartphone in your purse or in your pocket, and it's just amazing the things that thing can do. And you get the feeling that sometimes there's some smart people sitting around drinking coffee one. Hey, how about if we do this, or I'll bet it could do that. And then they try and make it happen. I'm surprised this one hasn't already been built into your iPhone or your android. But I guess the new Apple software will have a thing. And if it detects that you're walking not very steadily. Maybe you're having a health issue, and then it will give you some sort of medical alert or call an ambulance or something like that. I'm not exactly sure the details but Ian will talk to us about that in a few minutes, it could be that you're drunk. It could be that you're just walking, not steadily. You know, my phone would be buzzing all the time. But But maybe it's going to detect something about your health, which is kind of fantastic. You have that app on your phone already, Dave, I believe I do. And I also have an apple watch which can detect all kinds of things like, uh, regular heartbeats. And I don't have all those programs set up joking about how to do that, But But I takes my pulse. That sort of thing. Yeah, my dad wears an I watch. And I think it even doesn't check your cholesterol or blood pressure or something to or Something like that. It's It's pretty fantastic. And mine doesn't but my dad, I think my dad's does it does something else. Besides his pulse when he got it for the first year, he was always looking at going 83 or whatever the number was that he was looking at Ian will talk to us a little bit. And one other note about technology. You know, we all think that these devices are all listening in and then you get ads that reflect what the devices are hearing and Every time we talked to an expert about that, they say, it's just not true. And I shared with you yesterday, an experience I had where I said to Brenda, you know what would be fun is to make a big ginger, which is a whiskey, Ginger ale cocktail, and the next day I started getting ads for how to make a big ginger, which I never get. I mean, it's ginger well and whiskey. I don't need an ad for it, but I was getting recipes that were popping up. And I didn't Google it. Um, so that's just kind of weird. That's kind of weird. And then a lot of you started to send us examples. John, I went to apt by a transistor radio. When I got home. There were several ads for radios on my Facebook page. Okay? John. I was visiting friends in Michigan and we were window shopping, and I commented on my friend's shoes brand. It's raw fees. 20. Minutes later, I got home turned on my computer and raw. These is the first add to drop. Wait a minute. They still make transistor radios. I thought about that, even as I read that, Steve Well, good for them, John. You talk about that cereal. I don't even remember the name of it. It spoons, something it's called Magic Spoon. I just saw an ad for that in my news feed, and I've never heard of it before, and I've never spoken of it. And I've only heard your commercial for magic Spoon cereal on the radio, and my phone sits on my desk. So the phone must have heard you talk about that. That is spooky. Um John. We were outside talking about our broken spigot. And what we could do to fix it. My husband got back inside Turn on the computer. And there were directions on how to fix an outside spigot on his iPad. We never search anything. Okay? That's to explain that one to me, It's 9 16. This is W G. M. Jones burial. To this Is.

"You go to the Cleveland Browns. Now they finally make the playoffs. They barely beat the Steelers. Even though the Steelers were undermanned to find a way to get it done. It seems like your most your players, even though but job Antonio is going to be out there left guard, you know, Pro Bowl caliber player and so that obviously hurts. Kevin Stefanski. Calling plays. It's not a science. It's an art, and it's his offense. It's the first year with Baker is the first year in this system you're playing a team has already played you twice. So they have a good feel for your personnel. They have a good feel for kind of what you're doing. So in that offense, it's all about window dressing. It's how would type of formations they're using whatever ships would have emotions. You know, how are you trying to get personal information groups to be able to get them off balance a little bit to find those seams on that stretch going to hit it? That's something that you've got to be in it for a while to understand, So I, It's tough because he's your head coach. He's your play caller on offense, and it is a very, very difficult situation for anybody else to come in in the first year of their system and be able to be able to call plays effectively against the defense, that's one of the best in the NFL. Now. This is their second match up twice twice in a row. And it's always that that old adage you can't beat a team two times in a season. Well, sir, third time playing each other this year, it feels like it's a winnable matchup for either side. But the Steelers air really struggling to run the ball right now, they have been ever since Thanksgiving. How can they fix that part of their offense right now, as they're getting a lot of my guys back that did not play since weeks, seven weeks, 16. How does that part of their offense change if they really are struggling to get the ball going on the ground early? You know, it's interesting. Their offensive line you're their offensive running attack hasn't been great. You're really all season. There's been moments where it's been better than others and talking about being a team three times. I know. Ian will remember this back in 2009. I was part of the Dallas Cowboys. We beat. Maybe the Eagles early in the season and then we played in the final game of the season in 18 T Stadium in that game was to determine where the game was the next week. Whoever wanted got the home game We went in Dallas, and then all of a sudden, it's like we beat him twice stuff to be a team three times and you start. I know the Browns and Steelers split, but you start getting in your head when you play a team back to back like will this work? What are they going to try to do to stop it? And you're they did this last time and they were effective. What do you do? You think they don't know that we're preparing to stop it and then try to do something else and see the coaches. You finally have to sit there and look yourself. What do we do Well, What have we done Well all year. Let's focus on that. We understand this team. We know what they're good at. We can't be trying to change. I could tell you about chasing ghosts. You can't be chasing all this stuff that could potentially happen. Just focus a lot on you. And you know your opponent well enough that you're going to be fine, and that's what I would have to say. You know, the Steelers need to do you look at this in the Browns that matters Well, you get caught up in trying to figure out well, we have to run the ball real Well, maybe you're trying to run it. Listen. Do what's been working for you. Ben's been playing better. You know, the receivers are starting to get going a little bit. Lean on that defense, mixing the run a little. But don't try to reinvent yourself in one week, cause it's just not possible. What's it like? Going through a coaching change is a player because you went through one with the Cowboys. It is, uh, it's difficult. You know it's different because Especially when coaches come in it. Z like this substitute teacher, you're getting someone used. It's completely opposite. If you have a player's coach, people believe the reason you weren't good enough is because you never have discipline and If you have a guy who's too stern to old school. It's like, well, the guys didn't respond to this anymore. So you get like more of a players, coach and so everything kind of flips on its head. All right, like you're not really sure. How it all works is kind of uncomfortable. It takes a while to kind of settle in, especially if the coach had been there for a while. You had some success, so It's tough difficulty kind of the scheme situation. Yeah, that's one thing but just understanding the personalities of your coaches your coordinators. How what they expect what they're looking for because There's there's only so many plays and somebody defense is you can run. But certain people like toe emphasize different things have run him a little bit differently. And you know what? I want you to be tighter and coverage here looser and coverage on this or you're gonna blitz this way or when you're running the ball, stretch it here versus there, and like Things seem really small, but when you've done it one way for four or five years It's tough the next year to come in and all of a sudden changes. You know, there's habits don't die easy. Yes. After watching your Buckeyes on Friday, dismantle their now playoff rival Clemson, If you would have breathed on a small child on Saturday morning with that child still be with Well, I have Children. I mean, four. I don't know how small that is, Um, I was hurting. I was certain I'd do some right here the next day, but I'll tell you this season. It was some of the most enjoyable radio I've done because for the three days leading up to it.
