Marc-Andre Fleury Hints at Retirement Following This Season

"Let's get a thought or two on each of these players slash personalities in the nhl. Starting with marc andre fleury and the headline in this one is the answer to your question of. Could this be your last season in the nhl. I was surprised by the answer. And then i kind of went in revisited. Later in the interview. I just wanted to make sure i hadn't gotten anything wrong or miss heard anything you know. Flurry is going to be thirty. Seven in november He's had a hell of a career and a hell of a season and a hell of a season last year at the top of his game. Winning the vezina trophy. I've always been fascinated by. That's naidoo reference it in the interview. One of my favorite baseball players ever. And i'm sorry if this makes me old is mike schmidt phillies in the hall of famer. you know. Five hundred. Fifty home runs and at his peak. He was the best third baseman in the majors and he was a three time most valuable player and not only was he a great hit her but he was also the best defensive third baseman in the major leagues for quite some time and he quit in the middle of the season basically because he was below his standard. And you know he's still could've played on you still good enough to play. But he said nope. I'm not mike schmidt anymore. And anyone who ever dealt with him knew that you know he was confident confident guy and once he was blood at stanford he was gone and flurry kind of talks about in the interview. About how you know. I want to be at the level. I expect myself. He says it's tougher to play goal. Thirty six years old. And i understand it but it was still kind of jarring.

"Will stop by talking about the big game in the premier league this weekend. It is spurs against chelsea chelsea up big favorites in this one and not just with the oddsmakers put also with our panel to it is a clean sweep on the panels predictions. All of them have gone for chelsea to score two goals in this game and come out as winners when we talk about goals. Lukaku has four goals in full games for chelsea many expect him to be top scorer this season. But did you expect him to hit the ground running like he has craig yeah that actually entails needed. A strike hit the ground running. That's why even out and paid the big bucks could l. afford to you know how slow style to the season. Then be playing catch up. So i expect them to start well. Because he's the peak of his career is coming off a great season and that talia again all the heroes. You didn't have much breast and overstays false game was against off smokes this because they do defending So yeah i. I absolutely expected them to gwen show. Relationship Therapist, Brittanni Young, on How to Manage Rejection

"Sex down south best sex conference ever down at atlanta. You are hosting a workshop on managing rejection and a really wanna talk about this so tell us why. This is such an important topic. I might be colored in my lens as it's just the thing that keeps coming up you know both personally and professionally and i don't think people realize because it often feels isolating when you're in it but there is going to be that dynamic there where you have somebody who's the higher desire partner in the low desire partner in any given situation. It's not common where you have both high desire or both low desire at the exact same time you know and really being able to navigate those waters. Most people have no idea. They're just okay. I just think that. I need to bring you to my level in that. Is the solution so much so right. My partner is broken. can you fix them. Can you diagnose them. And can you fix them. And even beyond sacs rejection. It just feels like this important life skill that has been glossed over. You know in recent years. We've heard a lot about vulnerability right expressing vulnerability and showing vulnerability. And i don't think ten years ago. We were hearing as much of that in the mainstream. I agree and i'm like in five or ten years. Will we hear more about rejection league in every respect whether it's applying for a job or this is a tiny little thing but saying hello or smiling at someone on the street and having them ignore you not for hitting on purposes Just for friendly. Now you live in the south. You live in atlanta We're a lot of people smile and say hello. Yeah i live in toronto. Where when i smile and say hello i kinda get. I get pretty upset. Sometimes because people will just look right through you or almost even roll their eyes at you and what am experiencing there Is very visceral. Yeah it's rejection out. It's probably not about me right. It is it is actually okay. I'm gonna say this. Maybe people from toronto will disagree but for me. It's a cultural thing in the city that you ignore each other. In fact people in new york are more likely to like not it. You say hello. Wow yeah turn a special. This is my view. I know somebody's gonna say no toronto and it's not everybody right. There are pockets. That are super friendly. So that experience of rejection like it just feels so bad in your body

Some Players Aren't Convinced by US Soccer's 'Identical' Men's and Women's Contracts

"So. This story arose on tuesday afternoon. That us soccer has offered identical contracts to both the us men and women On the surface you would look at that and say oh well the. Us would have been asking for equal pay and it appears as though they have achieved that they do not see it that way. No they don't they issued a tweet from their. Us national team he eh. So players association us pr stunts and bargaining through. The media will not bring us any closer to a fair agreement. In contrast we're committed to bargaining in good faith to achieve equal pay and the safest working conditions. Possible the proposal. That usf made recently recently to us does neither. Now here's where we have a problem. what i would say is knowledge vacuum. I don't know what was in that proposal. I don't know the ins and outs of the pause. meg From the athletic. Who just great on this she tweets. Us soccer just issued a statement on the us women's national team on us mnt cba's it states that usf has offered identical contract proposals today proposing single cbs structure with revenue sharing usf believes best way to achieve these important goals is by the us women's national team players association on the us ns tpa negotiating together. That's the men's association however this quote marks this is from us soccer if the players association's choose to continue to negotiate separately as they have to date us. Soccer will invite the us women's national team to sit in on the negotiations with the us ns and vice versa in the interest of full transparency

Not everybody's doing eight shows a week so we don't know i do know that waitress that the night it opened they did make an announcement that waitress itself had broken All the previous broadway records for single performance ticket sales. They made it almost two hundred thousand dollars in ticket sales But besides that all when i was at passover tusa empty seats When i was at hagerstown. I didn't see a single one and i'm sure that last night i think the odds are very good. That every seat was filled last night. Guys are man so buster. The dodgers clinched their ninth street playoff spot with a win last night. How important is it for them to actually win the division though with these surprising giants well. It's it's absolutely huge. The funny thing was about nine days ago. We had the dodgers and giants sunday night. Baseball and i asked that very question of neighbors. The dodgers manager any kind of blinked looked at me and he goes. You know what it's too out. I haven't even given a thought right. He's still in the moment of the regular season. But you know now down the stretch with less than three weeks ago it's going to become a focal point because we've seen time and again how great players can be derailed. By that wildcard game. There were a couple of years Seven eight years ago when it looked like at the end of the regular season the pittsburgh pirates were the best team in the national league but they had to go through wildcard game and it back to back years they face madison bumgarner to the beginning of the greatest postseason run. We've ever seen any pitcher that was in two thousand fourteen and they lost and then the next year they got jake arrieta at the end of the greatest second half we ever saw from pitcher And they lost again and so the dodgers have a chance to be the first team to win back to back titles since The nineteen ninety. "So he very definitely bucks. That trend but presidents tend to be. I think thirty. Four percent of all presidents in the united states ever went to A ivy league school for undergrad or grad and then five of the last six. Can you guess who. Number six's joe biden joe biden and he went to delaware and he went to syracuse law. Yeah because Previous president went to warton while he went to penn. And i think he went. Well warton's the business school at u. Penn right just crushed it. Obama went to columbia That's right George w went to yale. Yes he was the legacy. His father went the skull and bones guy to what about clinton where the ego. Clint went to georgetown. And i believe he went to yale. Law house open. He was a razorback. You think so. I think arkansas after that can we take So as far as education goes you know it's sort of one of the things were the education of course is great. No one's going to knock an ivy league school education with a straight face all right. So don't think we're doing that. But there is that we are defect where getting the job Because you have that on. Your resume is a thing you can't you just can't deny that right. It's just the reputation of the ivy leagues alone. Yes sustain their reputation. Success breeds success. Exactly so if you have a degree from an ivy league university the doors are going to open for you just because you have a degree from an ivy league university like you can say in for position at a wall street law firm ambi less qualified probably as far as actually doing. The work goes in somebody who went to georgia. Who's smarter and more capable than you in. You're probably going to get the job because you went to an ivy league school because they have the reputation the thing is the ivy leagues are well aware of this. They know that it would be really easy to rest on their laurels. And just you know anybody in as long as your parents have the money to donate like a new wing of the library right like it always a wing of the library. I don't know but it always donate a food again but the. I think that they try to balance that out as much as possible at least to some degree because they know that eventually the reputation is going to fall because it turns out that all of the harvard people are really actually dummies. The problem is is in the meantime. The those people who are making their way to the top just by virtue of having gone to the ivy league Aren't necessarily the best in the brightest. And since they're aggregating at the top that means leadership is not necessarily the best in the brightest in. They're also recruiting drafting and opening doors and creating policies that benefit people like them rather than necessarily everybody else in the final factor. This chuck is that because those people into ivy league schools and the rest of us are just odd by ivy league school. The fact that they have ivy league credentials means that their ideas that those policies they come up with that the The decisions they make are inherently right right. Because they're ivy league credential so it's a big or boroughs with like multiple tales going in mouse. But it's all one big thing. That's a human centipede and it's a real. It's a real. It's a real balancing act because the fate of the nation in a large part not entirely. We'll get to that in large part rests in the in the hands of these. Yeah these ivy league. Schools are producing tomorrow's leaders. That's true There was a study that found that top executives are not dominated by these elite schools. But they are over represented so like i said that five to six fold advantage to get that top position in a business. If you went to an ivy league. School I think there are about on par though with Like mit stanford caltech You know there are plenty of non ivy. Schools also are kind of up there with them as far as maybe not representation but at least Breathing in the same rarified air. Yeah there's there's a strategy called ivy plus which includes stanford duke university of chicago in mit marais people. Consider that and then there's also people are like oh forget georgetown and don't forget you know i think uc berkeley sometimes sure berkeley probably. So there's a few western. Maybe yes if you if you step back and look at these schools. I'm paper some of these articles. Probably blow ivy league schools out of the water as far as just like education in specific areas specific. Like if you wanted to understand business gore and business school if you wanted to practice law in any like to learn law. Harvard law yale law is a really good choices. If you wanna learn everything you need to know about the food service industry go to cornell They have a huge like restaurant. Hospitality and food science division ya. I don't know why but it's as good as it gets right. So but there's other schools they're like like trying to go into harvard for engineering rather than mit. Like you'd be derived you that so in that sense. Mit blows harvard out of the water. The thing is doesn't matter. It's mit's not ivy league school. Harvard is so. Harvard has an extra veneer of prestige. The average dumbed on. We'll just be blown away by right. Georgia has good journalism school shirt great veterinary program large animal. That yeah and then for guys like us. It's also place where you could go and get a decent state school and have a lot of fun. Yeah cheapest forty ounces in the state man giorgis to be really cheap. I think tuition has gone up but when we were there like six hundred dollars a quarter or something we'll load. Wow this ridiculous. Wow that is cheap. Bet it's coming up. And george got a lot harder to get into as well since we were there. But this other ninety. Yeah well. I'm going to take it during these schools to like not only. Do you have to have a lot of money to go there. They are incredibly rich and wealthy schools. They have endowments totalling for all of them combined. One hundred and forty billion dollars. with harvard's endowment being forty billion think the lowest is browns. Piddly little four point two billion and ed conjectures here about. I think he's probably kinda right that you know. When you have an endowment it's not It's not just a big loaded bank account but it's it's an investment to make more money on that money. Sure and if you leave a ton of money as a harvard lomb to their endowment fund and then you end up running business they might invest in your business or something like that. It's possible i haven't seen anything but it makes sense. Then there's like such a You know one hand washing the other kind of thing ivy league schools in particular because they are these conveyor belts saying one hand washing the other. Yeah okay. I think so. How else are you going to write your own ticket right. I've heard of one. You know you scratch my back. i'll scratch yours. One hand washes the other thing. But how do you wash your hand without just with just one hand. That's what i'm saying. Okay i got you right here. I can get it. Josh thinks so creepy start trickling out. That means we're doing a bad job. We take another break. Let's take another break will come back and talk more.

"Who did it last year but coming back so the thing is though is like what we're talking about. Sports people are like. Why are you talking about sports. This is the how the ivy league episode. How league works so We're going to basically stop talking about sports and a little bit but you have to talk about sports because it's like you said it's a sports thing but it's it's just just completely disingenuous to say like okay that's it. The ivy league is a sports league. It's so much more yet as really so little to do with that being a sports league it just so happens that these elite institutions that were elite long before the sport of football came around happened to join into conference together. informed a Yes sports conference but it really is a concept. And it's you know it's a grouping of schools the like you said are among the oldest the most prestigious We'll talk about their elite status and whether or not that's true it is Whether or not they are elitist they can be right but they're trying to fix that. Josh newsom ears can't see you know that's the point but Yeah i mean. It's where i mean we'll get to all of this. But it's where the president of the united states supreme court justices and ceo's of huge law firms and companies go to school. The idea is that if you make it into an ivy league school you can basically write your own ticket. Yeah that the united states. Write your own ticket. Yeah and it's been that way for really long time for a really long time that that is just how it was. But then when they started to kind of expand and try to be bastions of higher education. That serve all socioeconomic. Status is give the best and the brightest regardless of your income. Right a fast track to that. It became clear that that's not necessarily how it works in a lot of ways. Ivy league schools really are just this conveyor belt for dynasties. Yeah you know that. Just serve the the highest echelons of society but it is. It's unfair to say that they aren't doing anything about that or or don't do anything about it they do right to counteract that some If i were to write mound ticket you know it would be jaywalking. Now i was gonna say aerosmith seventy six. I didn't think about that kind of man. Man you gotta expand your mind. Now gotta pay some stupid jaywalking and you're rocking out at the wrong direction. Within all right. So i guess we can talk about the origin of the name. Ivy league. There is one. Well there are a couple of stories that are not true that you still hear people say are true in certain circles non ivy circles. It's that when they first got together to talk about forming a sports league there were four schools so they use the roman numeral four which is an iv and they called themselves ivy league. That is not true. Or the i saw kind of elitist It was outsiders. Saw the the roman numeral four and call the iv incorrectly which is more like even worse. But there's another story that's a little closer to the truth. That this one sportswriter in the thirties. complained that he was going to have to watch the ivy grow at some of these ivy covered institutions when he was assigned to cover columbia football game. Right yeah columbia. Pin game in nineteen thirty seven and caswell. Adams was not too happy about that assignment. No and so the his his editor guy named stanley woodward of the new york herald tribune took that. Iv thing rain with increasing the ivy league that stories probably not true either but it does seem like stanley. Woodward is a good bet for the person who came up with the term ivy league right and then in nineteen thirty five was officially used in print from ap editor alan gould but it seems like the it seems like it might just be as simple as the fact that these are schools that literally have a bunch of buildings with ivy colored walls not colored but ivy growing on the wall. Right which is is kind of has like a certain distinguished air to it's it lends like this Super upper crust vibe letting ivy grow up the walls of your institution is definitely like it's a certain thing and it creates a certain vibe in that vibe just happens to be exactly with the ivy league. Schools are all about. And i mean they even have like ivy planting ceremonies for incoming classes. And i believe all except yale let you grow still yale. I think starting back in the eighties thirty cutting their is back. Because it's actually not good for your building ivy roots get into masonry joints hold moisture again. It's not a it's a bad jam basically and it can really cut into your annual take from your endowment to fix those buildings so yale said no more. They have a little bit ivy crawling up a couple of halls but for the most part. It's gone from the campus. I've got ivy On my fu part of one of my privacy fences between my neighbor and i built that privacy fence when we moved in myself with my own hands in. Ib started growing. Now is a complete wall of ivy and it looks awesome. Yeah mosquito farm is what i've heard. Yeah but i don't want to trim it back. But i'm going to leave it there because it looks really cool. It's also chipmunk slipped a in there too. So how can do away with the chipmunk. House can't get rid of their habitat wherever they go You want to take a little break. Yeah i'm gonna go get q. Tips for this microphone. Okay i'll be right back. Many go breathing paper bank star from charleston steroids. You.

"Some would say for taking a knee. Colin kaepernick on there that night and talking to jim harbaugh just the two of us and he indicated. He was benjamin. Just think oh my god. We're more alex. Smith have to do and he went to the bench. Some crazy circumstances you know. I so today's golden boy he got benched and traded away because they had the new great player and patrick mahomes. He had this injury. I just tony. I knew he didn't win the super bowl. And i know he was over. Number one overall pick and people can say well number one overall guy should at least gets. I don't care about that. He had an incredible career ninety. Nine victories i think he had of a fifty nine percent winning record as an nfl quarterback he's had a ninety nine year ninety nine sixty seven and one fifty nine percent wins. You never have to apologize for putting alex smith and you're starting lineup. I will say this. And i said this many times this year my heart was in my mouth when he went out there to play. I thought he could get killed out there. I thought his leg could snap off out there. I'm a little surprised. He quit because i thought he might want to work with their urban meyer. But i am. I am convinced that he proved everything to everyone that anyone could ever ask him. And he goes out with himself right on to himself. Radar still preserved meyer. What he can't hold a clipboard. Put it head coach. Yes he can be coach. We move now to european soccer european soccer. My favorite up. Twelve of the biggest teams in europe from england. Spain in italy want to establish something called the super league it would have fifteen permanent members and rotate in five additional members. It would not interfere with current league play but would essentially replaced the champions league. The issues seemed to be the fear of the munition of traditional national leagues and the end of a democratic qualification for championship league fee. And you way for hate. This new league will on. Are you on his side. No new. i'm never going to be on fief aside. I can't think of an instance. Tony attended one world. Cup of one premier league game. I hardly have an emotional commitment. As much as i enjoyed those events to this dynamic. Okay however and so. The traditions aren't mine. They're just not my law. I like seeing a play offs. You know the premier league doesn't have that as far as i know new and that they don't have that for the most part and your. I want to see that this new superleague would have that. And so that would interest me seeing these fabulous world. Famous teams play each other presumably home and home during their season. I would like to see that. So i'm you and i just on the outside we are stargazers. We want to see the greatest teams in the greatest players. Go a gift each other. Yea let's go. I know if i lived in one of these places in europe and i had grown up with it. i'd be a purist to some degree. Like i am about american sports. I apologize if people were offended by that. I want to see the new league superleague. Let's do it. This is this is essentially about one thing from the standpoint of fi fan. Uav control oh. They control european soccer right now and they are fearful that they would not control the now. I want to give the example of the ncaa here because this also about entrepreneurship. This is about people. In how new league start and they start this way a bunch of people get together and they say you know what we can make more money by ourselves. Then we're making these other guys so let's go out and start a new league and this would be like with the ncaa if the ten the big twelve in the sec and football said well. We don't need them. We're going to have our own championship. We're going to do that. And we're going to keep all the money and so it's a loss of control. And it's a loss of money as well in a loss of prestige. I was amazed at boris johnson. The prime minister of england. He went crazy about how bad this was. Of course. I don't think it's i don't think it's bad at all. You're going to have to list some of these teams that they have here. Manchester united liverpool. Real madrid milan. There's no german-french teams yet. But they'll come in. Maybe they'll come in because you know what is better idea. This is a better idea. Let's hope he is best bran in world football today. What's the biggest best brand. I assume it's the premier league. What do you mean you surprise. Johnson was a with this. He's got the brand with here need to still exist. the legal still will be diminished. There's another competing. That entrepreneurship makes a mike. Two big fish eat little fish. That's the way goes. Let's take a break coming up..

"Episode. alex smith retires. European soccer is up for grabs and the dodgers and padres live update expectations. But we begin today with kevin durant. He left the nets game last night. Early in the first quarter with what brooklyn is calling quote a left thigh contusion unquote durant missed. Twenty three games in a row before returning to the nets twelve days ago. He played five games before this injury. We'll bond. do you still consider the nets to be the team to beat tony. I don't know that. I ever consider them the team to beat i most people do. I hadn't even really certainly decided. I thought they were the team to come out of the east because i started that with philly and i wasn't ready to abandon it yet. There's so much to happen and people say you know. I have this argument in my house. Every night with a basketball fanatic. Who says if they're healthy if if they come back healthy wait a minute. I mean you've got to stay. Healthy is not just coming back healthy. Can you be healthy. The brooklyn nets. The lakers have not shown us they can do that yet. So health aside. I look at a couple of teams philly and i know miami struggles. Just stay above five hundred and get a decent place in the standings. But i think miami's a team with the with the game with the attitude with the workmanlike approach to it to beat brooklyn in the series. Even if the series started now with everybody healthy. I think that's all i'm not granting them the eastern conference just yet. I'm not you have noticeably. Left out milwaukee from your equation for now just for now tone. I'm going with philly. Miami is the top two threats in the east and we know. There's a bunch of threats including the lakers in the west. Okay well i would point out a couple of things one is that the nets were in one thousand nine hundred four without kevin durant in that twenty three game stretch and i think that tells you how good they can be. If kevin durant comes back now. I don't think they can win in the playoffs without hard. Because for my money as i've told you from mancini's the mvp you're right. He's having the great year at the moment. But i think they can win. A bunch of games without kevin durant. And i think i think what's going to happen is this. I mean he you know. He tore his achilles. This is a significant injuries. You don't come back from that in just a year. I think he will be in and out when he is in those sporadically. Though it may be. Let me give you the numbers. Twenty seven points a game rebounds shooting fifty four percent and forty six percent from three. Could i interest you in those numbers. Good and so and so i will sound like your son and i will say this. Do you know how good they are in can be when all three of them play this day average. It's only seven games. I grant you but they average one hundred and twenty four point. It's number one in the league so to me. They are indeed the team to beat in the east. Let me force a quick story. Because when i first started covering the nba for the washington. Post back in the mid nineteen eighties. Yes we're old. There was a senior guy columnist. The person who had covered the nba for decades already. Who will say to me. Listen youngster don't get carried away with what you see in the regular season. Throw all of that out because you have been really healthy in the playoff win these games. That's rocking off the street. All the time. And guess what they don't win. Don't forget that young whippersnapper. Oh wait that was anthony kornheiser. You're going to abandon all that you've known for fifty years. No no no abandoned. Hope all you who enter here. No i'm not going to do that. I'm going to tell you that you're going to have to live with kevin durant being in and out of the lineup. And when he's in the lineup you have to take advantage of it. But the critical factor for that team is james hardwoods. James harden james hard. No question he's got to get back in the lineup by the way and they're that's right that's the nfl's player of the speaking of injuries won't be coming back for another season. Alex smith announced his retirement. This morning he was the number one overall pick in the two thousand and five draft out of utah. Play for urban meyer. He's been eight seasons with the forty niners five with the chiefs and finish his career. Here in washington dc where he made a remarkable comeback from a compound fracture and seventeen surgeries on his right leg. Tony how you going to remember alex. Smith's career my number one memory will actually be something that happened this year in washington. It was a shot of his wife and children in the stands with their masks on rooting for alex smith. And it tugs at your heart. I mean alex smith when he got in these games which was against all odds against all odds that he would ever play again. He got into these games. Washington was five and one in the games that he started. He may not have been great personally but he got that team to where they were five. One and i will say this that. If i have to look at the entirety of his career i would focus on what happened recently. I can go back. But i would focus on what happened recently. Meet with all of those operations. Nobody thought that he'd ever come back and play except maybe him. People were worried that he would never walk again. And i would say this. It's not just the comeback of this year. That's one of the great comebacks in the history of sports. Alex smith one. He won mike. he won. Tony we're all suckers for a great comeback and his seems to me to be among the very greatest of all time regardless of sport. So i agree with you completely there. I got a lot of memories. I guess i'm gonna go back to two thousand five. He was drafted. And i'd covered a couple of college football games that i've been around alex smith then working for the washington post i just like to. He was competitively. Socially culturally as a man a young man in growing into older man old biocides professional sports standards. I just liked and respected. Who he was and how he comported himself and how he projected what he thought and felt. I was in san francisco with his former coach. Harbaugh i think it was a monday night. The nike essentially benched benched for a certain quarterback who is now more famous or notorious..

Alex smith james hardwoods anthony kornheiser kevin durant nike san francisco alex smith Smith three fifty four percent fifty years Twenty three games tony five games alex forty six percent twenty three game one thousand seven points today

"They wanted knowing they would never use it. Yeah yeah and. I just want our modern day feminist moments in movies to just have the like pure strength of will to be what it is and not have to like thinking about the bad version of league of their own being like that moment in the last avengers movie where they're just like all of us girls are going to team up here. We go power fucking girls or whatever they were doing a think it turns me off when finished moments and movies seemed to like almost call attention to themselves as though they're belittling it is like managed to look. We're pulling off like it seems so petty and trivial when it comes in in that way and yet a movie like league of their own that just takes up the space that it wants tells the story that it wants tells it how it wants to me. That is the stronger film by far not rehearsing giving me like some sort of squint. And being like ha ha told your girls rule like that's dumb. that is dumb. I just wanna watch the rule and not have to like have a clapback about it. Well there we go amy. Would you shoot this movie up at space. Yes me too. I may talked about all the reasons. Why i i'm amazed it's not on the list would be shocked if it's not on the next version of the list is just it's just perfect home. Run hit the only thing. This movie doesn't have is a the academy award. Nominations and i think traditional five film normally has and but But yeah i think this movie is a solid solid. Yeah assaults. I mean i think. The only quibble. I have this movie. Is i feel bad for the chaperone trying and then they drug her. They're like she got drugged in like ha tom. Hanks doesn't want to kiss her. "Mind. The right person got got it because i think john davis was leaving no matter what so if that was the case i would definitely say i would want the person with the more passion who wants to do this or can commit to it. It's sort of like. Have you dated somebody who you really love. But you know they're not gonna commit to you and so certain point you have to be like yes. That person's awesome in my life with them would have been or could have been amazing but like they're not gonna commit to me so i have to move on and i think that's maybe part of it too. I get it just makes me so sad for diety man stuck with lame old bob. Like look people. Don't even it sorry for us. But we may not you know. Maybe she's not maybe she's not but bob's boring but so is she. Amy like so as gena davis because fucking gena davis doesn't have the the empowerment to take this moment. She has the moment and she's given time and time again in this movie to make a choice to give herself some sort of satisfaction and she doesn't do it so i'm going to go online and say gena davis is boring. Like she is great and she will not read certain point. You gotta back gotta move on check please. And that's what. I say about davis character like she doesn't earn it she doesn't earn it. Earn it and like elizabeth. Gilbert has the same idea this world view. It's like ideas exist in the world. if you don't activate and on an idea someone else will take it. And i do believe that. That's the same thing here. Like given opportunity after opportunity after opportunity to to be the face to she could. It's like michael jordan retiring after like the first season right like that's the way they're building up so they'll let somebody else come in and take that take it. Then this i think makes a league of their own the most perverse sports movie because then it is about a person who's naturally good doesn't seem to have to work that hard. She's just great at it. She's naturally better than everybody else and she quits like crazy ending. Yeah exactly your team loses lose like in. That's a very interesting ending. And the peaches seem upset about it. To like rosie is be madonna gives her that. It's okay that you sucked speech. Yeah like we forgive you that you sucked wick. It's okay we won't murder you in your sleep speech. They're upset like the peaches legitimately wanted to win. So i think. I enjoy the emotional tug of that ending like happy for kit. I'm so sad for the girls. It it wins. It's not just like the easy. Like yeah the hoosiers. One congrats or like. Yeah the cool runnings guys lost but we expected them to lose it. It's it's the best of both. I totally agree. And now i guess the only question left is amy. What did people say about this movie. And we know that people loved it right. I mean but was it. Anyone not love this film. You know how you couldn't you know people didn't love this film what it really ashamed. This movie got negative reviews from entertainment weekly from the washington. Post variety timeout. The new yorker chicago tribune people times. Uk independent uk did not love the movie they all really condescending to it and just thought it was like it's fine but the negative view that i picked is from the orlando sentinel because it's it's really snarky and the way that it snarky and missing the point of the movie. I find incredibly telling right. Okay here we go from field of dreams to the babe. We've seen a lot of baseball films in recent years. Now here's the movie could have been called field of dame's or the babes. In some ensemble movies nashville for example the various character sketches blend to form a collective portrait. That makes a broader statement. In marshall's fill the sketches just remained sketches. Did marshall get a hold of terrific subject and then become afraid of appearing to political too feminist or even to female oriented the only way this movie differs from one that a man might have directed. Is that instead of female nudity in the locker room scenes. There's a locker room scene in which the coach urinate in front of his team. Also few directors would have kept the one peach. Who's a former beauty contestant winner in the background in fact marshall and the screenwriters don't even develop what could been the movies. Most involving theme dadis eternal conflict between her love of baseball and her desire to be a mother and homemaker. I kept waiting for what should have been the movies key sequence in which dottie would confront her husband with her reasons for wanting to finish out the peach season and our thoughts on what to do afterward but it never materialized. He does compliment gina. Call her. He calls her tall strong and says she looks great as dadi and that she scores amazingly well in her underwritten role. But then he calls lori petty the whiny kit and says she drops the ball. And then this is the part that i find most telling without a compelling story about one of the female players to follow you may soon search around for someone else to focus on. I found myself following. Hanks's character the dissolute tobacco chewing and spitting coach dugan a role. He plays with exhilarating verve and a surprisingly convincing old pro quality in the course of a league of their own. The coach up changes at his attitude about female athletes and discovers a whole new way to love baseball. This is a fascinating transformation to be sure. But what does it say about. Today's hollywood with most interesting character in a movie about a woman's baseball team turns out to be a man. Fuck you fuck you. I mean it's agree review because it's so fucking dumb. It proves the point that i have long said about male critics. Even the ones i love i think male critics tend to be invisible to female friendship in films. They just don't see it. I probably had gone on this rent around you. That it's like some sort of dog whistle. Where films that are about the stuff of female friendship and the things that make fema friendship. It just blows past people and they think that these films are about nothing. Like i've seen it time and time and time again before about vampire academy that it's film about vampires but the reviews not enough vampires. And you know that actually it was a film about friendship and none of those reviews talked about the the friendship. And i think this guy is watching this film. That's about a team of women in their friendship and coming together and having each other's back and he's like it's about nothing but at least that man stopped being sexist. 'cause that's the only part he could see. It's like color blindness. Find it absolutely fascinating. And then i went through because i got really interested like a lot of these. Negative reviews had issues with dice. Character being so silent and keeping her stuff inward. Ok however right win. This film comes out. Another film comes out. Unforgiven with clint eastwood. Of course also person character keeping all of their stuff inside not expressing their emotions. Love that thought it was the best performance of the year. Couldn't complimented enough. They're just not looking it in. So i went insane. It just interesting if you we have. I think there's a certain misogynist quality especially in sports films where it's like. Well this isn't give me the exact same thing but it really is. This is a. We've seen a lot of sports movies. A lot of male dominated sports movies and to me. There is no difference in this movie in that movie. Yes all the trappings of what make this movie. Great and special characters and the dynamics are very unique but as far as the sports part of it like this is a great sport. Just hands down. It's a great sports. Maybe yes it has a bunch of as an symbol female cast. But it's funny. How people will pick that stuff apart at. It's so weird i agree. I think it's terrific. And i think honestly it's a lack of having a c- a scene where dadi is like. Here's why i wanna play. The peach season is what makes it. So smart is what makes it feels credible. It doesn't need it. it doesn't need it at. The guy wanted the movie to like reach for cliche and become a lesser movie guy. I just want a gag gag. I'm gagging left and right with this. No you gotta like just give it up. One more time for Penny marshall to have the wherewithal to know how to eight maybe even sabotaging and shoot it at the same time. Like when you look at that scene it really gives you a bad response and this movie is so delicately in precisely done that i feel like she knew how to give the studio what.

"Research they said that the league was actually very popular and profitable from the start largely because it played in the towns of the upper midwest that had no way of watching a live game and the reason why the league kinda fell apart was because of the popularity of television and televised games. But for those Ten or so years. They were more popular than this film. Makes them out today. You're right. I mean the film makes it look like they get popular by the end of the season. But they were. We still say they remarked. They're definitely mocked yes. I will say that knowing that. I've done no more research than that factoid. That had just read to you. So if you say it i believe you but i also will then challenge one more fact and to see what your comeback is on this that you know. The movie also suggests that the american and national league had shut down during the war. But that didn't happen either. Both leagues filled up their rosters. By signing lifelong minor league players retired players and in some cases high school players. You know some of the minor leagues were affected by war and many were forced to shut down for their lack of players. And so those leagues those are the ones that really never resumed once. The war was over so that was interesting to me as well. So in a weird way it was even more triumphant that this was able to be successful in conjunction with actual American national league baseball like it wasn't like oh we're just filling a void. It was like no no no this is existing alongside of something else. I didn't realize that. I didn't realize that at all. They left that out of the movie. That the that the major league men were still playing ball. And i have to say when i saw this movie as a kid. The idea that whole sports league could be shut down because of global events happening. I was like that's insane. That would never happen. And i guess we mostly kept it alive Kind of kept our sports leagues alive this year. But now i understand what it's like when You might stop having a national pastime that you love deeply. Well i mean the big. The big difference is that the people who populated those leagues were not available to be there. Where here everyone was available to be there. You know like we didn't have a war. But i definitely understand that idea like i think there's this whole thing that we as a culture understand you know. During during world war. Two many women started working in factories while their husbands were fighting in the war. So i think this movie feels very similar parallel to that like more. They're working in factories and they're playing baseball. They're doing everything you know and And i think ultimately and we've talked about this every single week. The premise of this new to be exactly what the movie sets up. We don't need to hear all the ins and outs. The movie was originally four hours. Maybe they did get into some of that but it's not important because this movie isn't even truly about women being accepted as baseball players in my mind. I think the movie is so much deeper than that. It is a. It's a movie about teamwork. It's as movie about sisterhood. It's a movie about women being able to express themselves in a world where they were told. They couldn't do these things i mean. It's so it's so much deeper than like a historical like well. Technically the national league did have players who gives a shit like. That's the least interesting thing. In my opinion. I think the most interesting stuff is really what happens when you're able to do something that felt like it was never a possibility. Yeah and it's a movie that i think on top of that takes female athleticism as a given like. That's a really popped over me on this watch is it's a movie where the women in this movie are great at sports and you just get to watch them exert skills on plainfield kind of talking about love and basketball you just get to sink into a world where women are physically strong and athletic incompetent and able to run fast balls with their bare hands and just all embody this like jok life than that rare to see movies a girls. Who are that confident in. How they can move and catch and run and swing. Yeah there's no. There's aol the baseball bat like. I love that and they also love that scene early on in the movie when they're at the The training camp where they're they are making the league that there's so many women that are trying to get into the league and they send a majority of them home and then you're left with the best of the best so you would imagine. Even in that grouping the people were sent home were athletic and good incompetent but not as good as these four teams. Or whatever the grouping was that rosie and madonna explain it. "Other people. He will be the best quarterback in his division this coming year because they're not my words but one of my friends here believes it and we'll tell you why coming up next but first a little moment for sneaky. Hembo and here's the question for today which quarterback receiver tandem connected for the most touchdowns over the last three seasoned. That's the question. The answer is next. Get up on. Espn WE are back on. Get UP WITH SNEAKY. Hembo time and he has called out Grazziano this morning. Dan Grazziano ready. Here's the question for you. Dan Rutz quarterback receiver tandem has connected for the most touchdowns over the last three seasons. I gotta go with the Shawn Watson and Andre Hopkins because it's topical somewhere. Hembo is devastated because that is correct. That is the right answer. Drowsy gets it right. Those two are slightly ahead of Ben Rothlisberger Antonio Brown which is remarkable considering. They didn't play together at all last year. And Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams so yes that is the most productive touchdown dual and we will get to Shawn Watson in a moment but first Graziano. Let's run the hurry up. What's the timeline on Cam? Newton finding a new team still waiting to see what happens with Carolina. And when they decide. It's probably GONNA time to release him. It's going to be very difficult for them to trade him. As we've discussed several times it lightly gets to the point where he gets cut and then the issue becomes will a team take him on without giving a really close. Look at that foot and seeing how that's holding up and how it projects going forward going to be tough for them to find a job anytime soon. So that's one quarterback situation. Here's another what's up with James Winston James Winston. We discussed this yesterday. He's in the process of kind of resetting expectations not likely to find an obvious. Starting job right now may need to go to a team or he has to fight for a starting job or spend some time as a backup we should know. I would think of the next couple of weeks. What kind of market he had and then finally a quarterback situation. What details should we know about Marcus? Mariota contract with the raiders. Marcus Mariota's contract with the raiders. Looks a lot like the one that Ted Saints Gave Teddy Bridgewater? Last year they gave bridgewater seven point. Two five million plus incentives. If he played Mario getting seven point five million and can get up to about twelve or thirteen.

"And the ESPN PLUS APP. There is so much good basketball content. You can use to pass the time says Wayne. Wade's documentary. I have to tell you. If you have not seen it is excellent. You've got the boardroom. Nba Rookies and series. Those are just a few options and you can try it for free so you don't public service get it. You're watching the gem presented by Michelin wiper blades. Welcome back to the jump. I'm Rachel Nichols social distancing. My friends but Paul Pierce math foreign before we get into our discussion. Just WanNa play you a little bit more of my conversation with Adam Silver. Because he's talking about what might be ahead for the future of the NBA. Take listen if you did actually start the season in your mind. Is that regular season games. I would you go straight into the playoffs. What would that look like as we're talking about games that might not restart until July and August? Rachel I honestly don't know just because I don't have a good enough sense of how long appeared this is going to be as I said I mean even the fact that we were using the word hiatus just a week ago and that sort. The implication was a short amount of time. I think I said last Thursday not less than thirty days just to give some guidance to our teams and players but at this point I really don't know. Do you have the feeling as we sit here? What percentage NBA season will continue versus. Get canceled I I don't I mean I certainly I i. I'm optimistic by nature and I want to believe that we're going to be able to salvage At least some portion of the season I again. I'd say you know we done new and creative things in the past. We experimented with this year's all-star game with a unique ending. You know we've talked about playing tournaments for going into the playoffs. You know there may be other things we can do with the format. I know I've heard from a lot of our players. I mean it's only been. It's actually been less than a week. They're going stir crazy they WANNA play. They WANNA compete players as you know I mean unlike a lot of us in our positions we can just go back to what we were doing but every player. I mean his his his fighting. You know that something that's unwinnable. And that's the aging process. So it you know a lost year or loss portion of a season their careers is very different than other people. So you know. We're going to try every by every means we can to play basketball again. But you know I say that the safety and health of our players is I in our fans which is why. I don't want to speculate more than that. I mean that will be the condition upon which we can play when public health officials. Give us the okay you've mentioned experimentation with the NBA. Calendar different proposals people around you have had could this inadvertently lead to you guys reshaping the NBA calendar. You've talked about a mid-season break we're inadvertently getting a mid-season break. There are owners. Who have asked to shift the schedule to start on Christmas Day. Could we see this epidemic shift the NBA calendar permanently? Possibly those are things were always talking about whether their executives and your your company. Espn or Warner media together with our regional sports networks. I mean I will say you know what what the conventional television calendar has changed so much since certainly since I got into this business. You know prime time means something very different than it used to now. That people in essence carry televisions around with them in their pockets. You know the summer is viewed differently than it was historically from a television standpoint. So you know regardless of whether we had been going through all this is something that the League office together with. Our teams has been spending a lot of time on and we have a lot of our team. Owners who are technologists Media Mavens by background. And so it's something that Committees of of owners and League officials have been working on a lot especially over the past year. So I've asked you a few questions about permutations if you guys do restart I just WanNa finish with the question. If you do end up. Having to cancel the season we would obviously just have a year without a champion. What would you do about other matters of record? For the League's history is so important to so many fans with James Harden just go down does having won the scoring title even in a truncated season. Do you still hold votes for awards? Mvp Defensive Player of the year. How does that work? I'm not there yet. Okay we'll figure it out but I I hope I'm not just in denial but I'm just not there yet all right. Thank you so much for his time and frankly his honesty others very human moment. Question WanNa Know WanNa know rate and look this if we were say if the season ended today. Guess it'd be. The playoffs began today. Here's the western conference. Playoff matchups also should the second. But do you guys think we could just go straight into playoff games. Players bodies work here absolutely not I think they need at least whether it be seven to ten five to ten. They're gonNA need a little bit of time to shake the rust. Although these are the most athletes in the world.

"How's your week? Been anything going on not much just sitting around the house and sweats. Yeah obviously what is happening in this country and in the world has been bizarre and scary and weird and much bigger than sports although for many of US sports is how we experienced so much of American life. It's what we talk about with our friends. It's where we meet people who grew up differently from us. It's where we're forced to face ideas and issues that otherwise might not penetrate our little blue red bubbles and right now sports and the NBA specifically is one of the most public examples of these stranglehold of corona virus. The NBA was the first league to shutdown a decision that in an interview last night. Commissioner Adam Silver told me not only necessary for his players but also something that could help influence the rest of US take. Listen we're part of the psyche of our country in the world for that matter and I recognize that when we went off the air last Wednesday night it was it was a larger decision than just the NBA. I think it got a lot of people's attention and I think for those people and maybe young people in particular who are large part of our audience Who frankly weren't taking all that seriously. The recommendations in terms of what the appropriate protocols wow you know the NBA off. Something is going on here. He is right of course as this pandemic has mushroomed the NBA has also become a reflection of some of this country's political strife anger over the scarcity of Cova tests discussions over who was getting them and why eight NBA teams have tested their players and many traveling staffs also that is hundreds of tests. And while many of those have consciously been done through private labs so as not to burden on public health facilities there have been critics like New York City mayor. Bill de Blasio. After news broke the Kevin Durant and three other Brooklyn Nets players had tested positive for corona virus de Blasio. Posted this tweet. He wishes the infected nets players speedy recovery but then adds quote with all due respect an entire. Nba team should not get tested for Kovic. One thousand nine hundred while there were critically ill patients waiting to be tested. Tests should not be for the wealthy but for the sick I of course asked about that. Here was his response. I of course understand his point and that it's unfortunate. Were at this position as a society where it's triage when it comes to testing I'd only say in the case of the NBA We've been following the recommendations of public health officials. Let me begin with the situation. Oklahoma City last Wednesday night. The Utah Jazz did not ask to be tested. But Oklahoma public health official there on the spot not only required that they be tested but they weren't allowed to leave their locker room and they couldn't leave until the health authorities had tested them. So I mean that that was our first case and then what followed when you. We then had additional positive test the next day. The protocol followed that we were that we then followed with again. Health officials doctor doctor's recommendations that we then looked at essentially that that group of teams that were most proximate to the to the initial team that had tested positive and then the circle expanded from there and again I understand from a public health standpoint. Why some people have reacted the way they did but I'd say from an NBA standpoint. We were following directives. The head of the Players Union Michelle Roberts also chimed in to. Espn's Ramona Shelburne saying quote. The problem that more of us can't get the tests in my view that rests at the foot of the federal government. They were responsible for making sure. We were protected in that regard and I think they failed. She said so yeah the NBA is dealing with that while also being one of the most public examples of another issue facing Americans that looming constant question of what's next or is it going to be okay again or when it is okay again. What is that GonNa look like will this? Nba season restart or will it just be canceled? Altogether will this permanently reset the calendar in our interview silver introduced for the first time the idea of a charity game that NBA players might participate in. Although of course that comes with its own issues after all there is no social distance on a basketball court and what about the players who are closer to the end of their careers who are watching this epidemic. Eat away at what might have been there last best months of playing time. It's a lot which is fitting because this whole thing is a lot but as usual sports is going to be a big part of how we deal with it. Even without games being played here at the jump. We'll still be here every day. Talking about the important stuff being distracted by the goofy stuff and finding ways to celebrate all the good we can still get from the game. We love so. Thank you for hanging out with us. Don't worry though. Sweatpants are just fine. I won't tell the one Paul. I think it's so interesting when you think of all the different issues facing league but for you as a player rate when you were in the middle of all of this and seeing the sport that you could set your life by metronome rate you know in training camp started. You knew what would happen your day every day and all of that has fallen apart. What does that mean? I can't imagine how the NBA players feel because right. Now you're in the middle of a routine you set every single day you wake up whether you have take your kids to school you go to practice the meals. You eat the the way you go to the arena or to practice. It's like all out the window now. So now you're like if me and I'm in the League right now I'm kind of loss but at the same time I'm like this is serious because you don't just council NBA MLB and all these sports leagues. If there's not serious and so I'm GonNa be honest with you because before the NBA care so it was just like that's it with a grain of salt. It was like okay. The growth of viruses. It's a serious but not that bad when the NBA was like you know what we're gonNA cancel the season step back. This is for real and I stopped going to public places and you start to see a restaurant shutdown and public gatherings started become less and less than the NBA. And everybody's eyes. I think kind of sets the bar what's going on around the world and it's because like I said when I saw the NBA shut down. I shouldn't have true I like Paul said S. players. We're creatures of routine and specially heading into the playoffs. Right now. Post. All Star is the best time of the season for the NBA players Guys are at a loss and you feel for older guys. That could be their last. Go around or you know the bronze chance to get the Lakers to a championship. All these different scenarios and narrative. They're playing out so we actually want to decide on the side of caution but like Paul said I you know obviously I took it serious having kids and and being around my kids but once the NBA. Shut it down. I really think like atoms. That was a real wakeup call for the for the rest of the United States. Like this is something very serious that we have to take serious and we have to get a handle on is interesting that he was talking about young people right who maybe are seeing the effects in their own lives but when the NBA gets cancelled. They say oh. Wait like you said. Hey Okay now. I know this has to be different. I did think the point about about older players. You guys both put in the League for more than a dozen years and you know and that last year to you are wrestling with changing. Who What your identity is right. I mean it's a big transition and obviously everybody in the country is going through a lot of big transitions. No one's more than anyone else's but in this frame of discussion. That's that's a big deal. Obviously guys that come to mind like Vince Carter. Twenty two years and possibly this can be the end of his run. Who knows what's going to happen but You Know Vincent and like I said again. Lebron is Lebron's not a spring chicken. He's thirty five. Seventeen theories had an amazing season. The Lakers are number one team in the West and they really have a legitimate shot to win the championship here. So there's there's there's clocks from winding down some of these guys that we are definitely going to miss but we just it's still so much uncertainty. We don't know what's GonNa happen as a good reflection right. There's things that we are. GonNa get disrupted and then we'll see how they restart the same way. American society is disrupted and then going to restart at some point And then some things will. Frankly never get back. And I think we're seeing all of that reflected through sports. It is relatable relatable way to talk about a big huge sprawling issue. And we're going to keep doing that as we go on through this show and through the rest of the coming months. I want to show you guys staples center. This is right across the street from us. Not much going on. Still see a car back and forth every once in a while but usually there's a ton of people out there on the plaza lunchtime people taking pictures statues things like that and this is a lot of America. Now our our big gathering places sitting empty coming up we're GONNA look back at one of the most important milestones in NBA history..
