"Radio stations. Ed Markey, a US Senator from Massachusetts, has been leading the charge to keep AM radio around. Neelai recently jumped on the phone with Markey to talk about why he cares about AM radio, why he's introducing a bill that would keep it in cars for the future, why he thinks this isn't really about interference, and much more. Check it out. Senator Ed Markey, welcome to the Vergecast. How are you? Great to be with you. I'm glad you're joining the show. We've got to talk about the most pressing issue of our time, which is the future of AM radio in cars. You introduced a bill today with Ted Cruz, which I want to talk about, called the AM for Every Vehicle Act. What is the AM for Every Vehicle Act? Well, A -M -E -V, and the reason we made it Every Vehicle is the EV, which is the new vehicles which Tesla and Ford and other companies are saying is just too complicated to figure out how to put in new all -electric vehicles because of the electromagnetic interference. And at the same time, however, Kia, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Chrysler, they have all figured out how to put in their new all -electric vehicles. So it does get a little bit concerning. Let's be honest. I mean, Tesla is partnered with SpaceX, and SpaceX is trying to figure out how to put people on the moon. And then when you say, can you figure out how to put AM radio in cars, they go, oh, you have no idea how complicated that is. You don't know how complicated that electric vehicle technology is. We could never figure out how to get through that electromagnetic interference. So it's hard to believe, however, that Kia and Hyundai and Chrysler and Toyota and others are all figuring it out. And I guess what I suspect is they want to put all information behind a paywall. They want people left to pay for information in cars in the future. And as we know, beginning in 1920 with KDKA radio station in Pittsburgh, AM radio has been free. And I guess that just kind of runs contrary to the business plans of some of these auto manufacturers. They want it all behind a paywall. You have to pony up if you want to have access to information. And my feeling is AM radio has served as an incredible public safety protection in our country, especially in cars that people can use in order to navigate during times of trouble. And that it's absolutely unacceptable that they're going to remove that technology from electric vehicles using the flimsy case that they can't figure out how to make it work. All right, let me push you on this. One, they are keeping the FM radios in the car, right? They haven't said they're going to take those out yet. So maybe they're not pushing entirely towards a subscription future. I suspect they want to. I agree with you. But the FM radios are staying in the car. Two, all these cars are different, right? The Hyundai powertrain is different than the Tesla powertrain is different than the Ford powertrain. Have they provided any evidence that, hey, maybe it is difficult to you or are they just saying it to you? Well, I would say that I haven't seen the evidence. I'm not convinced. Again, we're talking about Tesla. We're talking about SpaceX, why they can't figure out how to handle the interference issues. I just think they don't want to do it. They're moving on. Ford is calling AM an obsolete technology. So from my perspective, that's what we're disputing. It's not an obsolete technology. Tens of millions of people still use it every single week. And I know on my radio dial up in Boston, it's on 103, 1030 AM, WBZ AM, and I've got it on and I've had it on my entire life. Yes, I have an FM channel as well. But I rely upon the all news WBZ AM 103, you know, to get immediate up to the minute news information and if I need it, safety information as well. So it's not an obsolete technology. Ford is wrong. Tesla, with its crocodile tears, is wrong that they can't figure it out technologically while bragging that they're making the most technologically sophisticated vehicles known to mankind. It's just absolutely not believable. So when it comes to technology and obsolescence, yes, there's a lot of planned obsolescence in the technology industry. A lot of software support goes away, all those sorts of things. But this one is they can measure who's using what bands in the cars, especially with modern infotainment systems. If they're saying, look, a brand new Mustang customer is likely never to use the AM radio. Isn't that a market decision? And people like you who want to listen to your favorite AM radio station, just buy a Kia instead? Well, what about when the car becomes a used car? Is the person they sell it to also not an AM radio listener? They might be a little poorer than the original owner. They might not be able to pay for or want to pay for some more sophisticated internet delivered information. I just think that the option should remain there. It's been in cars for 100 years, and it doesn't make any sense to remove something that has been there and servicing our country for all of those years. So no, I think that the choice should be there. And some of these cars are going to be around for 20 years, and we should ensure that that option remains technologically available. But don't you think that if people think AM is important, they'll all go buy Kias and Ford will have to figure out how to solve the interference problems they're claiming? From my perspective, I don't think that should be an option. I think we should look at it from a FEMA perspective. We should look at it from a public safety perspective. We should look at it from the perspective of needing to have that information be made available to consumers for when they need it. They might not be thinking as they're walking around a dealership, well, maybe there's going to be a tornado coming through my hometown due to climate change in eight more years. And I might want to have AM radio. So that's kind of from my perspective, how I view it. For example, WBZ AM up in Boston, it's actually got a hardened facility down on the South Shore that can withstand almost any level of tornado or hurricane, meaning it will broadcast through any kind of an emergency. And I don't think it's reasonable to say that people should have to be stripped of the ability to have that technology available to them when they might need it at some indeterminate point in the future, because they haven't been studying climate models as closely as they should. So, for example, in greater Boston, Boston Harbor, the Gulf of Maine, is the second fastest warming body of water in the world, meaning we're heading for some real tough times in the years ahead, and we need to make sure that we're able to have the safety protections that remain in place in order to give them the warnings before something catastrophic happens to them or to their families. Talk me through the process here. Who came to you and said we need to introduce a bill to keep AM radios in cars? Where did this idea come from? Well, AM radio, the National Association of Broadcasters, came to me. I've been on the Telecommunications Committee. Yeah, you and I have talked several times because of your role on that committee. I've been on the Telecommunications Committee since the first day I joined the Congress decades ago. They know of my interests in this issue in general, and they know that I believe that technologies have to be made in a way that serves the public interest, and they have to have a universal quality to them. So, that's the constitution of the Telecommunications Act of 1934, universal access. And so, AM radio played that role in the 20s and the 30s and the 40s, and then we added in the 60s and 70s FM radio. But still, at its core, it's a staple, and the National Association of Broadcasters knew that I would want to keep that in place because it is affordable at the price of being free. But it also is an emergency warning system that will help people who otherwise might in fact fall victim to

"The early two thousands to maybe 2013. That's what our budget is. Okay, sure. Um, Subaru, Honda and Toyota. Um what years should I stay away from? The only ones that you should stay away with. From Honda. Okay, This is a little difficult to explain a little difficult to find out, too. But in the early two thousands, my voice is a little Raspy this morning. I apologize in the early two thousand's Honda made some of their CR V s, which is probably the most popular little guy. The CR V s. In England. Okay? They're going to start the vin number that 17 digit vehicle identification number is going to start with the letter s as in Sam. I recommend people avoiding them, the ones that are made in Japan that start with a J and the ones in the start with made in America that start with the one or four They're fine. But the ones that the numbers start with s in England. I've seen more problems with those, then the other the other countries. Other than that, Toyota I can't really think of anything on the rap fours to avoid and as far as the Subaru's, um uh, the timing belt engines on the Subaru's Are prone to head gasket. Leaks. Uh, cylinder head gasket, external all leaks. And they're kind of expensive to take care of. They cost about $2500 to go in there and do that cylinder heads, Uh, head gasket replacements and that timing belts and parts like that. So if you buy a Subaru, uh, would be a legacy or whether it be a Outback or forester with the timing belt. There's a very good chance that if it's up at 275,000 Miles You're probably going to be replacing a head gasket on that, and that is a serious expense. Other than that great cars they really do. Well, if you find one that somebody's already done the head gaskets on Then you got yourself a good find there because they are excellent cars. Yeah, Okay. Very good. Yeah, Head. Yes, it was something to do with the material that hadn't asked was made out of. Well, it's it works against gravity to they called H block. And the head gasket is not like a V shaped and the word sits on top. It sits on the side. It's side mounted, so it's working against gravity Oil sitting on the bottom of that head gasket the whole life of the engine. And eventually because of the gasket material they used. They did change it up over the years. It definitely will leak, so it's external like it's not like A coolant leak in the head gasket that a lot of engines get from internal, but this is external. Okay. Got you. Okay. Very nice. Thank you. Good luck to you and your search, and I think you do real well. Thank you. Thanks, Larry. Margaret is in new Freedom, Pennsylvania. Good morning to you, Margaret. Good morning. Um I have a 2011 Honda Accord sedan with 160,000 miles on it, okay? When it's in park. It runs the engine runs smoothly. But when I put it in drive, it seems I feel roughness. Okay? So I just had to inspect it. You have to have a question. Well, what I was going to say is, uh, first of all, what model? Was it again? It was at a Honda or a Hyundai. Honda. Okay, like dog a right and the model. At an accord. Gotcha. Okay, very good. A lot of times, depending on knowledge. You can get some build up in what's called the throttle body. That's like the old baby a carburettor back in the sixties, but now it's called a throttle body fuel injector and you can get some build up in there and that causes the I'll drop when you put it in drive. When you put it in drive or reverse, your idol is as low as it's going to get. It's designed that way to be a low idle at that point, But if you have some build up in their dirt in the throttle body, it can actually go lower. Now this could be related also to what's called a throttle position sensor. This is a sensor for the throttle, but you're not experiencing any kind of check. Engine light, are you Nope. Okay, So that's why I'm thinking that this could possibly be built up of dirt. And I'm hoping that's the case because that will not set a check engine light because it's nothing electrical about that. So hopefully that that's all it is. You should see your regular technician if you don't have a shop, even though new Freedom is not right down the street from Cockeysville. We have a shop that we recommend. You ought to know called bad Cox Right in Cockeysville. Very good people and the 80 right up 83. You can definitely see them and they could take a look at it for you. Okay? What is? What is the charge on cleaning your throttle body? Usually under $100. Oh, that's pretty good. Dealing out. Yep. Okay, Dave. Thank you. Well, I hope that's a hope that takes care of it, Margaret, but I don't think it's anything major, and that's the good thing. Okay, because I just had it inspected and mentioned this to my guy, and he thought it was the spark plugs, which had been replaced at 100,000 Miles. And how many miles are on your vehicle now? 161,000 now. Yeah, they should. They should last longer than that. Most part plugs on modern cars. Now go about 125,000 Miles. If it was a, uh, a spark plug or a coil it should. Now that's the keyword should it should set a check engine light. If you're if you notice a roughness than the car should and it should set a check engine light for that should said that one of the cylinders is not firing properly. So that's why I'm leaning towards the throttle body situation more than I am the spark plugs. Okay? Um would root is Babcock on? Are they on cocky? Still road? Yes. Right on. Cocky is no road. I can give you the phone number if you like. Go ahead. I'm ready. All right. For one. Oh, uh 785? Yes, 27 70. 27 70 and Brad will probably answer the phone. He's the guy that usually talk to when you go there. Real good guy, okay? Thank you, Dave. You have a great day. You to Margaret Appreciate the call. Thank you so much. You're welcome. Thank you. Bye bye. Frank is an Ellicott City. Hello there, Mr Frank. Hey, Dave. How you doing? I'm doing great. I've got to hunt a pilot. I've got four hand cooked tires on it..

"We'll break it all down fast. Money returns welcome activists. Money four chairs on the move today after the automaker announced production cuts due to the ongoing chip shortage crisis. Philip got the details from chicago hotel. Melissa the announced this late in the day and it essentially is gonna hit the big profit maker for four the f. one fifty because of the shortage the company will be idling the plant in kansas city where they build the f. one fifty. It's already been shut down this week and last week. They're also going to shut it down next week. And they're also going to be reducing the number of shifts at the f. One fifty plant in dearborn michigan dropping. That down to one shift next week again because of the shortage of chips that is limiting their ability when it comes to production. We'll get ford august sales numbers tomorrow. In terms of industry sales in august. We knew it would be rough and the numbers are finally in. According to motor intelligent the sales rate for the month of august with thirteen point one million vehicles again. that was basically what people were expecting. And that is well below what we saw. These are the annual numbers back. In april it was eighteen point five million. So we're seeing the fall off here because of the limited supply take a look at toyota hyundai honda. All of them reported lower sales in the month of august due to the restricted supply. And then you've got gm and still lantis and the reason we're showing you. These guys is because they don't report their monthly auto sales but both of them have had to cut their production of pickup trucks again. The profit drivers for those two companies in north america. If there is any group though that is for the most part withstanding the shortage of vehicles mainly because they can also take used vehicles. It's the auto dealers we're talking about auto nation group one penske all of them and it's not just these guys look almost all of the auto dealer stocks because of the used market being so strong and because what they are doing when it comes to new vehicles and the high transaction prices. Melissa spin a heck of a year for the auto dealer stocks fell. What's your what's analyst. Take on on sales in the future. I mean the longer there are production delays. You might go and buy a used pickup truck which then might delay the new purchase further down the line. That's a possibility the the only thing that people know for sure is that the chip shortage. It's not going to last for the next several months. Nobody's quite sure when it's going to get back to normal but clearly cove it in asia hurting the chip production there and plants in malaysia and other places and as a result not enough chips are coming over to the automakers. Not just here but around the world and so you're going to see these restricted sales going well into next year. Melissa now. i'm not saying we're going to see a thirteen point. One million rate every month between here in april but it's almost impossible at this rate for the automakers to catch up on inventory and as a result it's gonna be tight at the dealership and the used market will remain strong. All right fell. Thanks phil abo- tim seymour. How do you process the shortage. Impact on on production. I don't think i need to process it. I can see in the share prices down twenty five percent ford. Gm and and. How many times do we need to hear this news. I think this is again. i'm not killing the messenger. I'm saying from a markets perspective. I think we see we see companies that have never been more profitable. Companies are run better. We're seeing companies that have a future companies that are well positioned in ev. We've talked about the ford. One fifty being the most popular car in north america and arguably one of the highest profitable most profitable cars in north america so look at the valuation and these companies look at their positioning in the most exciting part of the auto segment and take that data coming out of used car prices in auto dealers. And say you know you're not gonna see this demand go away and it's very interesting to me you. Price auto companies one way when they don't have a current business and treat it differently in the longer term. I just think that investors need to be patient and there's an amazing for companies that have been through a war and this is a war. This is a very good situation. They have so. Does this pretty much karen. i mean. it's tim seems to be outlining like like an iphone. Delay people eventually by one just down the line but it's not a sale loss. Still even at this point right exactly talk about like if you don't go out to dinner. That is a sale lost. You're not going to make it up later. Eat may maybe but probably not. But i think it's just delayed not denied and you know you talk about are people have to turn to the used auto used car market. Yes they will. Those cars are also aging. The whole fleet is ageing of cars in america. So i think it's just you know a gratification delayed not denied long but you know that's been just a terrible place to be. I think lyric next beginning of next year is going to be very very important for them. And maybe we'll see some valuation out of crew's coming up alibaba.
