"I mean, so there's a lot of great books out there. You can go to classical Christian dot org. They have a full laundry list of all the types of resources. But even on the more modern stuff, and the more original documents you can get, the better. So the Declaration of Independence, you could do a whole graduate semester on that. If you want to, but even just breaking it down for kids because we dumbed down really great imaginative, powerful stories into these readers that are really boring for kids, so the more you can original fables and great children's literature that Disney's dumbed down and everyone else has dumbed down, make that come alive, the more original I think the better. And I'll add anything by C. S. Lewis, I think he was the most important author of the 20th century and every Christian should be. And by the way, not just his Christian apologetic stuff. That hideous strength and abolition of man and this is a more this is a higher level, but if you want to get a high schooler to understand the tragedy of totalitarianism, have them read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and obviously 1984 by George Orwell. George Orwell just transparency as a rather graphic sex scene. So if you have a kid read it, maybe just monitor that. I just never want to recommend it is R rated. Besides that though, it is an unbelievable work. It is one of the most prophetic, articulate and important pieces of literature ever. Let alone in the last 100 years. We are living through basically every prediction of George Orwell from the manipulation of speech to surveillance, to the elimination of history and all of that. Sorry, that was a very long two parted answer. God bless you. We need more teachers. God bless you. We need more teachers. So important. All right, we'll do two more questions here and here. Sorry for everyone in line. Peter hugged Seth. Charlie Kirk, thank you, good and faithful servants for sharing your gifts. Thank you. I have a couple of quick sound bites leading to a question. I was educated K through 12 in Catholic school in Los Angeles, California. Peter, I guarantee to you that I didn't get the negative education that you talked about, maybe some and that maelstrom of organized history and teaching. In my school, ten commandments in the hallways in the classrooms, U.S. Constitution, U.S. flag, each classroom. For 8 K through 12, fortunate for me, a county in North Carolina. I better be careful to not name the county. I had a construction consulting assignment post hurricane Florence, 23 against the question we're over time. So please, 23 campuses, U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the our father. My question is, combating a school board. What is something that can be said as a parent, a taxpaying parent in the neighborhood in the community that can shake these people to their core other than saying, get behind these Satan. Yeah, so I'll just say, you need to foia them. It's freedom of information act, and then overwhelm them at the meetings, right? And so it doesn't do everything. Again, I agree with Pete. You got to get your kids out of government schools. I'll be honest. If you can get them out of government schools, but it's not realistic for everybody, and I never want to say you're making a mistake to keep them in. But the idea is to get them out. But foia requests for them to death, try to find out all the emails, all their back room deals, and then look, I'll be honest. You just got to keep showing up to the school boards. Pete really quick, and then we'll get to the last question. Yeah, I mean, the reason part of the reason you're here is because you engaged with those ideas. K through 12 education has kicked God out for the last 70 years, a couple of complaints to the school board. I mean, they're just going to look at you and say, well, of separation. That's what they do. They look at you and say, what I've got stacks of emails from administrators saying wall of separation, which they'll say it's in the constitution. Of course it isn't. It's not in the constitution. They believe it is. It's part of their dogma. Their mythology. Their mythology and so there's not a whole lot you can say to a modern school board about God. Last question, by the way, this is the last question of the year at freedom night because we aren't doing a December 1 because we have America fest instead and of course dream city does their Christmas pageant. So again, everyone register for America fest, no pressure, last one of the year..

"Point marine association officials said the core treated them like a partner in the restoration project Dozens of buildings from the montford point era had to be demolished after hurricane Florence pounded camp lejeune with three days of wind and rain in 2018 Many were badly damaged and sat too close to the lower new river where flooding and storm surges are getting increasingly common Navy commander Ross Campbell was camp le June's public works officer So these older structures not only were they not really meeting the needs of the training mission out here but they also represented significant risk as far as sea level rise And so it was a good thing to be able to pull that back from the water's edge That means the surviving montford point buildings are being shored up There would replace with waterproof materials their shingles were placed with wind resistant metal roofs and their heating and cooling systems upgraded to prevent mold and wood rot from the area's infamous humidity 97 year old Carol Braxton a retired master gunnery sergeant from Virginia vividly remembers that humidity and worse It was a swamp right near where we was In the evening just about dust dark the German stock would take us right by that fall And make a stand at attention And he would say you and words did you eat Yes sir Let them whisky to eat Braxton said the bites were so bad when he went home on furlough His mother thought he had smallpox And the verbal and physical abuse directed at the men seemed endless recruits were forced to smoke with buckets on their heads and blankets over the buckets He heard one man was forced to drink his own urine See we would do As if we wouldn't human The Marine Corps was the last service to allow black recruits and didn't do it willingly That took an order from president Franklin D. Roosevelt Melton mclaurin an emeritus Professor of history at UNC Wilmington is the author of the marines of montford point He said the commandant of the Marine Corps at the time major general Thomas holcomb made his feelings clear He said if he had a choice between 250,000 black marines and 5000 whites he'd take the whites I think that pretty much They didn't want anything to do with African American marines Jack McDowell the retired first sergeant came to Manfred point from his native Brooklyn and had a lower tolerance for racism than some of his southern counterparts But he stuck with the marines for more than 23 years serving in three wars and earning three purple hearts It was a long stretch of the cores early struggle to deal with race It's quite as it's kept on the islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa There were African American marines there And it was a couple thousand But if you saw any photos or movie reels or newsreels or any movies that they made about it you never saw any black guys He's gleeful about one piece of forgotten history Also when they ran out of blood and they asked for people to donate blood in a whole lot of white guys running around with African American blood at them During the Korean War he became one of the first black marines sent out to desegregate white units I ended up being in charge of 28 white guy the only black guy in the outfit his 1950 and most of them didn't even know black guys were in the ring car You know all of a sudden here's one And he's my boss For the first few weeks it didn't go well Well there was stunned at first it didn't quite know how to take this new change The sergeant that I relieved was rather belligerent He was kept using the N word so we had come to knuckle junction two or three times My busted lips and black eyes And we fought the Koreans while we were nuts Months later though McDowell was wounded and that same sergeant ran to help carry him to safety Complaining all the way using the N word After the war that sergeant asked to work with McDowell and they became close enough that McDowell later traveled to the man's funeral He says some montford point marines remain bitter about their time there and he doesn't blame them But he said he and many others went on to better lives than they thought possible In 23 years of getting around and dealing with all kinds of people in the variety of different circumstances it helped me in many many ways it gave me the ambition to go to school and get a degree The combination of that the schooling I found out that I wasn't afraid to make decisions At 94 years old McDowell says he knows every visit to his old boot camp could be the last And he fears that after all the montford point marines are gone their significance may be lost too As time goes by I think this whole business of love to point will sort of fade into oblivion But some of the buildings they used will stand as a reminder Now armored better against time and storms For NPR news I'm Jay price at camp lejeune North Carolina This is NPR news Today on all of it may is mental health awareness month and Allison Stewart wraps it up with mental health Monday.

"On the. What do they call it the jukebox back of the day? Yeah, they do. All right, welcome back to the Tod starnes radio program. Good to have you with us. And yeah, we're starting to put a little bit of the Christmas music into the rotation. Got to get in the yuletide spirit. Let's go to the phone's 8 four four 747 88 68 day morehead city North Carolina on the tox station. Hi, Dave, what's going on? Hi, Todd. I called a while back and spoke about my representative down here in the third district, Greg Murphy and how the guys just not proactive on stuff. Since then, I've heard him get on other radio stations and one of the things that I heard was he came out after the infrastructure Bill and he said, oh yeah, it's a terrible bill and he didn't vote for it and everything. What we need to representatives to do because now the worst things get people will get more involved, they needed to be sooner, but now what we need are representatives to do is get ahead of the game, they should have done this long ago and they need to say they need to break this stuff down instead of doing the Pelosi. Let's vote for it, so we can see what's in it. And they need to say, we're taking these benefits away from people and we're rewarding the illegals with it. If there's $1 of anything that goes to rewarding illegals, why is $1 of it being passed? And that's it, there was probably 10% of the infrastructure Bill rewarding illegals. And there's a whole bunch in this social spending bill that rewards illegals. Now, if you take something like day care, which was important and I have no problem helping people with day care if we can do that, but then I heard a breakdown the other day that my representative has said nothing about where they're going to put requirements on day care centers, the people that work there are going to have to have upgraded educational requirements and so day care, they're going to subsidize it, but it's going to cost three times more and it's going to be more difficult to get. So they're not only creating the problem. They're compounding the problem and our representatives are saying nothing about it. They need to get ahead of the game and they need to say, this is what's in the Bill. If we're taking $1 away from veterans to reward illegals, that's upside down wrong. But if we're taking money that we promise is going to be for day care or for medical or whatever. And we see this. We see it right now. Hurricane Florence money down here. There's money down here on the coast. People struggling. Well, look, have lost everything. Yeah, Dave, let me jump in here, Dave. Let me jump in here. Look, I'm with you. Any dollar, that is sent to an illegal alien is a dollar that's not being used for the American taxpayers. I got a problem with that. I've got a problem with any money, a single penny going to take care of illegal aliens. It's got a big problem with that. But the reality is, and we had a previous caller who I think really nailed this, that this is about paying off voters. Murph from Germantown. That was the guy. Murph says, hey, look, is it possible that the Democrats are buying boats? And that's exactly what they're doing Dave every single time. They give money to one of those illegals. They've got to run. We are up against a hard break for the top of the hour news. Folks, so we just got an urgent email from congresswoman Nancy mace and she heard what Marjorie Taylor Greene said on this radio program just a few moments ago and she wants to come on the program. So we are going to have dancy mace on the program in the next hour. Also senator rod Johnson weighing in on what's happening in Wisconsin and also Curtis hauck, who is managing editor of muse busters. Man, this is going to be a rock and hour coming up,.

"Seems like i mean you now know all the crazy stuff she spouted and this is nothing new over over many years. She's thought that she had control over hurricanes and the weather and so there's been times when she's like said that she would protect different places from some from huge storms like hawaii. She was going to protect from a hurricane lane and she was going to protect the people from hurricane florence and all these like turned into being devastating events and so this so just recently as hurricane ida came was coming up. She was like she knows how to do this. She's going to figure out how to protect everybody from From the hurricane so apparently she has thousands of followers that are called the weather warriors. Good i wonder if they have like matching outfits. I kind of like thinking that they do at least a hat. They need some or can not like a baseball cap. I wanted to be like a pointy like a wizard hat wizard. Oh i totally agree with you anyway. So so with these weather warriors. They decided that they would get together. And take authority over the weather to prevent any destruction death or severe flooding in fact any damage whatsoever for murdering a yes from hurricane ida that just like swept up to like new york saw eastern import it worked clearly in new orleans or whatever that are complaining about flooding or whatever to call. You're just making it up. yeah i have to just. It's so funny. After read you some of the quotes from like the. I guess it was kind of like a prayer or something. Maybe it was like a spell. They were casting. But i'm just going to read you a few little bits of it. So they address the storm. They say we say to you ida. You will become nothing. Jesus name but i thought it was funny that like the storm knows the name that we gave it. I just like i'd like imagining the storm going. Oh yeah oh wait wait. Why are you oh shit. They said i can't do it. I liked the storm being like. I like my grandma's name was ida and she changed it. Because it's true from either. The edith love the thought of the storm. Being like i like what do i look like an idea to you know anyway. I thought that was hilarious. So then they say we have authority over you. Because because christ took authority over the storms and stopped them. And i thought that was funny because like the thought that then when the storms come in like is is is cat kerr thinking like oh maybe jesus was more tight with the storm like. Oh i didn't get invited to the party or something and like i just feel like if you paid any attention. Jesus was not stopping that storm. Free like it was pretty funny. And then i just have to read one more funny quote from her because it's kind of hilarious and she said i believe that we will begin to create a wall of faith in the gulf so the storms cannot come ashore and i love the thought of that wall of faith. I feel like they should try that on the southern border. Bouba wall build the wall. One like i feel like if they're so great at building these walls through prayer. They should just try that. I'm just saying everyone in. The world is rooting for you to be successful at stopping storm. Totally we're all there with so please like why like but also noticed that. Maybe you've tried this a dozen times and you've never succeeded.

"We have some stories to talk about. I look. I'm going to start today. So i i i'm gonna paint a scene for you. Okay so imagine some pieces on on the grass in a line leading to shed sh yes and in the shed a long glo e finger pointing towards the heavens to fold whole poor little e. t. stuck here on earth and guess who is not very friendly to all the. Et's out there. Anybody know some people would be very friendly to the but ken ham is not one of them. Could what are you doing buddy. He well first of all. He doesn't really believe that there is life outside of earth. But he did. He just tweeted out that they should not expect any form of salvation from our jesus christ so if you're out there aliens let your own damn lord and savior seriously and it actually feels very much like like a little kid who was like dutt's our savior. You better get her own. Do your jesus. So this way tweeted. Hilariously says jesus came to save us not another planet to save another race of peeing. That's literally walking. So he's says salvation through christ is only for the academic say a down at grace. So if you're not from adam. Jesus crisis not for you.

"Some ideas there. We are toying with the idea of a dynamic cone. The part dr shepherd. You didn't ask but it's related is what do we do at the seven day forecast. Yes we're internal but what what do you do with a cone. Excuse me what do you do with a cone. That's eight hundred miles wide. How do you make any any decision. Based on that outside of oil. I better keep an iron on this so we wanted to a seven day forecast but should it be in. The come should be doing a different way. We actually don't have the answer to that but were or help. Hope is social science. Also that With the category. It's interesting because you look at a hurricane florence when when you're you're decreasing in category and there's a tendency to relax when the impacts never changed the storm surge. Forecast never changed. The rainfall forecasts never changed none of that change but the category served a good in hurricane. Michael where we were coming up. The categories of people like whoa. This is the wrong direction. I better pay attention so it becomes really really complicated and and was storm surge. It's it's the size and the speed. It's not even the category that that's the main factor in the storm surge tonight there's so many examples of you can have a category four or five storm small but it's fast that produce less storm surge than a giant category one That's moving slow. You get more storm surge pilot bigger area so it's incredibly complicated. What we've done so far as we've just tried to separate those impacts we have a storm surge washington warning we focus so much on storm surge half the fatalities historically have storm surge. I think we're making a dent by the way you have search products right. We're making a dent. I you look back. I have a little stat here. That i think you'll find interesting since twenty seventeen. I'm reading it. 'cause i don't want mess it up. Fourteen hurricane landfalls six were major. This is the united states. The busy it's crazy. Busy says twenty seventeen We've had a lot of fatalities but in the end Very few were storm surge. And and if you think about it and there's been more with carbon monoxide poisoning that actually storm surge. I think we're making a debt but we don't want it is still the biggest threat but i think we're making a dent in that. So are there better ways. We're working on it and we're hopeful. I reach articles. I listened to all the input. I see out there. There's plenty.

"To evacuate people have that information of emergency manager does. They're the ones that make the big decisions. We don't want that to happen So that's why we you know we really talk about get that official forecast because otherwise he'll jump all over the place and if it's not consistent can you imagine trying to make decisions when things are bouncing all over the place so we will always pretty conservative with that forecast for that reason and we are back on. The weather beaks podcast. I'm dr marshall shepherd from the university of georgia dome speaking with ken. Graham director of the national hurricane center Well respected expert Has long career in this field and you were just talking about you mentioned lawrence. I wanted to kind of reflect back on the twenty twenty season. The things that come to mind for me already mentioned one getting well into the greek alphabet other things that came to mind for me. Just how many storms we had in the gulf of mexico storms or some of the storms rapidly intensified and. then we had. I believe it was sally which wasn't particularly long storm kind of lingered What are your reflections on the twenty twenty hurricane season. And what are some takeaways that we can pass onto the twenty one season beyond from that season about lessons. Learned some things. Stand out definitely about the twenty twenty season. One thirty named storms. I mean the word relentless always comes to mind. Just you know. They weren't always. It wasn't didn't see some of the the the super of storms as many thousand five but we did hurricane. Laura was incredibly powerful the most powerful one onto hit louisiana but some of the standout things i look back i think of comparing laura and sally when i think about one of the trading items for the managers. We talk about hurricanes really. Don't care about your timelines. i mean some storms. You know it's nice to have an extra size. It feels good to accomplish that exercise and we got good plans out there right. But there's there's times you may have ten days notice. There's other times of a hurricane florence. For example you see all the way across the atlantic plenty of time but then you look at michael you know. Think about three days. Four days notice on a category five hurricane and you know looking at history has only been four category five to hit the continental united states and in history. Every one of them was a tropical storm just three days prior hurricanes. Don't care about our timelines. So that's one thing that struck me. Twenty twenty the other. Is there also different. You look at our consistency and accuracy was laura. We struggle with sally. And whenever you have a assistant that's so slow and a hurricane hunter or in there that's all coordinated outta here. As well the hurricane hunters week we plot the flights and work with them and communicate the different routes. If you have a center jump ten miles that could be a thirty or forty miles jumper where it makes landfall and i think that's tough to communicate that yes. We're getting better. But some of them are still quite quite a struggle. And the other things. Dr sheppard. That that i look back words matter and i and i look back at hurricaine laura and having information that not everybody was out of some of those coastal louisiana areas when we're forecasting fifteen to twenty feet of storm surge and i i remember the morning Here we are thinking about words and the word unsurvivable came to mind that that is oh there it has created a lot of That was a very provocative statement but was it calculated because not everybody was out of there. And you can't survive fifteen to twenty feet of storm search And in the end they got out. They got out. And we didn't lose a single person hurricane laura from storm surge but what struck me as well as we lost many more people because of carbon monoxide after the storm than we actually did associated with the storm surge. So this this whole after the storm is you may get through it. That's no fun afterwards. it's no fun. It's the power issues in his so dangerous so trying to communicate all the dangerous after the storm is another thing that we just gotta continue to social media remind people proper use of of anything from generators to watch out for power lines are even using. This is a little little strong but it's true. I mean after a storm is not the time to be looking at the instruction manual on how to use a chainsaw and yay that's strong. I get it but those are real things that we see after a storm and we have to talk. We have to have these tough conversations to save lives after the storm as well so those are some things that stand out. I guess for me to twenty twenty. But i'm not just the united states but big impacts on a central america just staggering impacts than i can tell you comparing.

This book is hilarious hilarious This book is comprised solely of comments spoken by president. Donald j trump in the wake of hurricane florence on september nineteen two thousand eighteen in new bern north carolina. So apparently he literally said who's boat is this boat. Whose boat is this. But the the animation it. The cartoon drawings are so cute. Yeah it's a big picture book. it's not long. it's it's great so it's a whole thing about the boat which apparently he saw and then just couldn't stop stop like he just wouldn't stop verbal diarrhea yet is that page redes- that page you're looking at to see what we're seeing this boat. "Major breakthroughs in image recognition and computer vision. And Issues Act has been following for years. If you really want to have a human and a machine work together, the machine has to experience the world in some ways like a human does. Then in 2015. For the first time, computers were performing better than humans in identifying a huge set of images taken from Internet sources. Like Twitter. All of a sudden computers become to certain planners trustworthy. If they're better than people. Why aren't we trusting them for various applications? If they're better than people, why aren't we using them in weapons systems? You do that the Pentagon needed to go outside the cozy world of military contractors and partner with Silicon Valley. By that point, Google, Microsoft and other tech companies were piling into the AI space. So in 2017, the Defense Department developed a plan to work with private companies on integrating computer vision into its battlefield technology. They called it project maven. The idea was that the Pentagon would be able to take these mounds of video footage that they collect from drones from satellites from airplanes. And instead of having people try to dig through the small portion that they can allow computers to dig through all of it. The key. Part of this is that the Pentagon didn't have the technology to do it themselves. The person passed with running the project General Jack Shanahan, It became almost a myth about what maven wasn't when it was not. There's no weapons involved like we used it for Hurricane Florence to help people understand where the damaged areas work. General, Shanahan says maven was about intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance, and it wasn't a complete secret..

"Alaska shall we start with hurricanes. Just so i. I was a victim of hurricane florence. That's one of the reasons why we're all now neighbors in the atlanta georgia area. But i was telling everybody they're like how do we communicate like used twitter. You know every body was wanting to go download another app but twitter's makes it so easy to communicate but Let's let's i guess. Tell us a little bit about. What's going on right now jennifer. You have a little bit of a weather Some weather stuff for us to the weather briefing on over those wins in case. You're watching this little bit later on this august eleven. So we're right in the middle to a record breaking hurricane season which is pretty crazy We had so many record. Broken records broken. All ready and the peak of the season is not insult mid-september and i'm talking about the atlantic hurricane season. We have the pacific. Hurricane season is well above the atlantic is one. That's been extremely active off. We now have what could be juicing. I believe in the atlantic. We have another system that we are watching. It's likely develop if that storm develops before august twenty seconds. It'll be the earliest that the j. named storm form so we're on pace for a record breaking season in. It's the first time that no. They re reissued their forecast for hurricanes for this year. It's the first time they've issued up to twenty five named storms. They've never done that before you so the thing is interesting a very active year now. Does that mean that. All these storms are going to make landfall. No not necessarily you can have a very active year and all the storm stay out to sea or major hurricanes. Stay out to sea. But we are likely going to see some major hurricanes. And i believe they're predicting at least three to six liter. Hurricanes that's category three or higher so it's kinda scary right now and we're going through covid nineteen no. It's you want to be socially distance in the bank thing when it comes to storm preparedness is. You can't rely on government really anything else. Yes they will be there to support. But when it comes to mass destruction so many thousands or millions of people impacted. They just can't help everyone at the same time. Ends really preparedness. It's up to you to protect you and your family. I because it may take days even weeks for you know. City officials government officials vehicle to manpower to help everyone. So that's the most critical thing. And so i'm a storm chaser as well as a meteorologist. So we're gonna talk about a couple of different things different products. Keep your family safe. Make sure you are prepared in your some really cool new ones now on. That are awesome. Even if the apocalypse happens you guys would be okay. Let's talk about this first product that Jennifer brought attention. Which i think i almost want to go out and buy one and that is the. I don't know if i'm saying it right. But is it like the loggia. Five and one wi fi weather station in your outdoor wrote that while tell tell us about this jennifer so this is kind of for the weather each in you if you have a weather geek. There's always whether gig in the family somewhere What i love about this is when you think about whether there's a lot of Climates and you really see this in the summertime that you're experiencing right now where you see it raining down the street but not over you and you're like how did that happen. There was something in that air that was more unstable down the streets than where you are that caused that in so i'm always fascinated with what is the temperature. Drop once it rains. Or if i see a front moving through renault front is blanketing through the wind chest and so this is like your own personal weather station In you can teach your kids about the weather. Witnesses well but it's truly digital. Look at the do point temperature. The actual temperature the different wind speeds in all sorts of other atmospheric conditions. Now this is probably one of the lesser expensive. You can have one costs hundreds of dollars but this is a basic one. That i love and i think does a really good job when it comes to the digital outdoor weather station that you wanna have at your house you can monitor the weather and you can. Even you teach your kids Cabs on it so during the cogan atmosphere or you just teach your kids at home. You will at home. This is great for science. Right you can come about science about the weather as different fronts moves through so this is one of my favorites and there's also pena fans with this as well on. It's got an almost five star rating which is really good when it comes to any kind of products. So if you're a geek anyone of attention to the weather where it is over your house or you want to help teach your kids. This is a perfect product or that. I love that because it's it's so Direct for yourself. It's very low. It's it's hyper localized. We're watching television and everything you have to keep it somewhat. General visit like in your very specific area and i also love how you made that about teaching. Your kids This this kind of stuff. It's it's super interesting And fun as well as as opposed to just being some scary thing because a hurricane's coming tornadoes coming relook whatever Type of deal so. This is great. I love this. It's even amazing. Even here you know. And it's it seems like maybe maybe that's why the weather channel is located here in atlanta. You can have crazy. Storms up where. Chris lives and we don't get a drop down here and it's like where did it come from. Well when you're creating a seventy forecast You know it can fluctuate between like even ten to fifteen degrees across viewing area so having a seventy forecast for atlanta. No it's gonna vary especially once you live in a specific location for five or ten years. You start to understand okay. It's always been a little bit cooler here. A little bit warmer based on that seventy forecast. I mean like you said chris. It's hyper local. There are micro scale things that impact the weather locally within towns within neighborhoods that can make big impacts When it comes to how a storm is impacted by you And since we're talking about. Atlanta the southwest portion of atlanta is known as the mini tornado alley in atlanta because storms tend to produce does as they go over that the southwest portion of the region which is fascinating in. It's likely due to a little bit of mountainous terrain down over that That area so who is in trouble but yes weather station is awesome and i like the.

Hurricane Season Will Be Above Average, NOAA Warns
"Hurricane season is coming and federal forecasters are predicting that there will be between six and ten hurricanes in the Atlantic this year. That's above average Jerry. Bell is the lead Hurricane Forecaster at the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. The Twenty Twenty Atlantic. Hurricane season is expected to be busy one. Npr's Rebecca Hersher reports. If the forecast turns out to be correct. This will be the fifth year in a row with above average hurricane activity in the Atlantic. That's the most consecutive years ever recorded bell says we're expecting yet another above normal season and now is the time to make sure that you're getting prepared. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is asking state and local governments to consider issuing evacuation orders earlier than they would have in the past in order to give people more time to safely leave their homes while maintaining as much social distance as possible. Carlos CASTILLO OF FEMA says Americans in hurricane prone areas should also pack different supplies than they would have be prepared to take cleaning items with you like so panna tiger disinfecting wipes or general household cleaning supplies to disinfect surfaces. You may touch regularly. Fema is also urging people to stay with family or friends or in hotels rather than in shelters if they can forecaster Jerry. Bell says the main reason for the large number of storms in the forecast is phenomenon called the Atlantic multi. Takeo Oscillation basically the wind temperatures in the Atlantic have been really good for making strong hurricanes since about nineteen ninety five that will probably change in the next few years as normal climate fluctuations happen that's separate from manmade climate change but climate change is making the storms that do form more damaging for one thing bell says sea levels are rising sea levels mean more storm on Dacian as a hurricanes approaching and warmer air and water mean that hurricanes are more likely to drop catastrophic amounts of rain. When they make landfall think hurricane harvey in two thousand Seventeen or Hurricane Florence in twenty eighteen and he says rain and storm surge affect more people than they used to our coastlines. Were built up tremendously over the last several decades so that there's potentially many more millions of people in harm's way every time a hurricane threat together normal climate variability plus the effects of human caused climate change plus the pandemic add up to a potentially deadly summer and fall hurricane season officially begins on June first and runs until November first Rebecca Hersher NPR needs.

When Does Clark Howard Think The Next Recession Will Be?
"With us on the clark howard show hi tammy how're you doing. I'm fine. How are you great. Thank you tammy. How can i be service service to you today. I've been listening to you for for a long time and you were right on spot at the last recession and i wish i had told my house right before that one so now we're getting it fixed after hurricane florence and i'm wanting to sell it but i wanna make sure i do it before the next recession. When do you think that's going to be well. If i knew when the recession was actually going to be i would be the richest human on earth. I mean forget warrant. I would be so far past him so or bays so the thing is there are only guesses about kind of thing and if you look at where the markets are pricing it in it's about a one in three chance chance that the economic difficulties we're having right now will lead to a recession you know there are lots of times that will have a slowdown in the economy economy where let's say goes from fifth year to fourth or third or something like that but it doesn't mean going into reverse so we're in the phase right right now where we've been in fifth gear for awhile. I'm really most of the last nine years we've been fifth year. The ben some times that we've downshifted on shifted like there was a time in twenty fifteen where it looked like we might be headed into another recession and instead all it was was downshift and so this time is likely could be that <hes> but a recessions are inevitable and don't take the wrong lesson from the last one okay because there were unique factors in the great recession that caused is all the problems with real estate values and the massive unemployment and all that because when recessions come out of banking scandals they're far more severe and harder to cure than a regular normal was called demand based recession so ooh don't worry that if we do tip into recession it's not going to mean that the home you are fixing up and you want to sell is is suddenly going to collapse in value. You don't sell it before a recession might happen so you can't. You can't make your plans on that kind of idea. The time to sell your home is when you're ready to sell it and it sounded like what you said. Is your ready to be done with this home right so if that's the case then. Is there a pattern where you live what months are are generally the best to market a house for sale well. I'm in the wilmington north carolina area and <hes>. I'm actually over the real estate and right now wilmington north carolina. It's high demand because they don't have very many properties so i would say as soon as your house is dressed up and ready for the market. Is your so done with that house. I mean it's just you're done with it. As soon as you've got it ready. Go ahead and start interviewing agents and figure out who you wanna list with or if you decide after interviewing agents you wanna try to sell it yourself then get going with it because you asked me a question specifically about the economy but your situation shen doesn't really trend with worrying about the economy years is about the fact that you're you're so over that place you you wanna drive away from it and never have to be there again correct so that's some motivation for you to get it dressed dressed and ready to go and that's what i would be doing so if the market demand is strong in wilmington north carolina take advantage of that and besides the effects of the economy slowing is mortgage rates for the buyer are so much better than they'd been and so they have an extra motivation to want to buy your home gene joins us on

Fed Minutes, Retail Sales Lead Busy Week
"This week brings the minutes from the Federal Reserve September meeting plus retail sales and data on the housing market joining us now from Washington with the details is Wall Street Journal reporter, Sharon, none. Sharon, let's start with the fed minutes. A lot happened last week with the president. Again, criticizing the fed over short-term interest rates that was after Wednesday's market selloff. But the data were getting this Wednesday won't reflect that news instead. It will give us some insight on the September meeting. That's where the fed said. The economy remains strong and penciled in a fourth rate hike for the end of this year and last month, the Fed's seemed pretty confident and seeing that plan through. Yeah, yeah, that's true. So in that meeting in September, the fed raised short-term interest rates by a quarter percentage point, and it was there was this really interesting dichotomy that kind of has kind of showed up recently. And that's that some fed officials say as long as employment keeps falling farther below the level that they project is consistent with stable prices, the fed will need to raise rates to prevent. At the economy from overheating, which is like a very standard perspective, right? But there's this other camp, which is really interesting. That argues that this is this is more radical if inflation doesn't appear to be exceleron beyond two percent. And we've seen hints that that's the case. Recently with recent inflation reports, the fed could stop raising rates after reaching a so called neutral setting. And then of course, there's another strand to all of this fed talk. You know, President Trump has kind of bashed the fed in recent days, arguing it shouldn't be raising rates the way currently has been, and this is pretty unprecedented right. Politics of usually been left out of the monetary policy realm. So fed policymakers, monetary policy makers could do what they feel like is necessary without congressional or presidential oversight essentially. So that's kind of what we're looking for further evidence in the feds reasoning for choosing to raise rates by an another quarter percentage point, right? And more experience of this kind of divide between fed officials whether or not we should keep raising rates or or pull back if inflation stops player. The way it had been in previous months. So let's turn to retail sales. That data is out on Monday. We've seen pretty strong results from major retailers with a few exceptions. What will you'll be looking for in this report? Yeah. So it's it's key to remember. Of course, that consumer spending is the key driver of the us economy. It represents about two-thirds of g. p. of our economic output and in August US, consumers kind of actually rained in their spending after a very strong spending growth that we saw in July, which I think is kind of reflected in those earnings reports. But still, I mean to put this into perspective, the overall weakness that we saw in August was largely due to a drop in auto sales. So you know, that may not necessarily say something as strong as if maybe we'd seen across the board spending declines. There's one interesting thing to add here though. One PNC economists that w spoke with said that hurricane Florence may actually mess up the spending data for September and a pretty interesting pattern going forward with purchases ahead of the storm. You know, maybe things like food and other supplies decline in sales in the immediate. Aftermath, right? And then and then gains again during the recovery phase when people are making purchases for repairs on the like. So this week also brings several housing reports. We have the housing market index on Tuesday than housing starts on Wednesday and existing home sales on Friday. Last week, we learned that housing mortgage rates are nearing five percent. What can this week's data tell us in that context about the health of the sector and where it's headed? Yeah, absolutely. The rising mortgage rates, you know, it's good in terms of showing that the fed sees that the economy is healthy, Right Math where we're raising rates, you know, that kind of feeds into the different interest rates that we see in different borrowing aspects of the economy, but it's bad in that we're seeing that mortgage rates combined with rising prices for homes. It's kind.

You're listening to the newsroom from the BBC World Service with me Emilio San Pedro. It's not yet a month since hurricane Florence at the east coast of the United States causing catastrophic damage in north and South Carolina. Now people in northern Florida are preparing for another huge storm hurricane Michael which is expected to pass over the north west of the state later on Wednesday. The Florida governor Rick Scott described it as highly dangerous and potentially life-threatening. Let me be clear. Hurricane Michael is a monstrous storm forecast gets keeps getting more dangerous. We're now just hours away from CNN packs again, hurricane Michael is coming to the Gulf Coast, and panhandle and impacts will start in just a few hours. The time to repairs right now. The storm is dangerous. If you don't follow a warnings from officials. This storm could kill you lose Fajardo BBC monitoring is in Florida. He's been telling me more about what the authorities. There are saying we've been hearing about officials starting of course, governor Rick Scott telling people in Florida to be very alert this storm they're expecting impact on Wednesday afternoon. Probably they are expecting it could even move into a category. Four storms were very dangerous storm, particularly they're worried about the possibility of storm surges of up to twelve feet in some parts, they could expect them as you say it's different from hurricane Florence. There's at least one sign of relief for Florida in the sense that it's supposed to advance quickly. What are the problems with Florence? And we've got major storms and have occurred recently in the US is the fact that they've been going slower than usual because of that grading even more prominence of flooding. Apparently, this one is expected to move relatively quickly through Floyd. So it could be. Very destructive because of the wind, but not so much of the sort of hanging around what other preparations of the authorities making nearly one hundred and twenty thousand people have been told to leave and in several counties in northwest, Florida. Some people are particularly worried because as several of these counties are in rural areas they are relatively far away from the main resort city of Miami. And orlando. Is what many people in the world now, Florida for these are more rural and more impoverished areas? One of the counties, which is under risk by this here again, apparently they're saying that they don't have enough shelters capable to withstand this degree of uric aims. So they're trying to make sure that people are are well prepared. Also, they're dealing with another issue. The fact that is the third consecutive year that Florida has been under threat of a major hurricane and people are worried that in some occasions, they could feel that they don't take the risks seriously as they should. So I guess I kind of fatigue because of this constant threat of hurricane. So they're trying to make sure that the people know that this is a very serious situation. Reese, the President Trump's administration has seen its fair share of high profile departures, not all apparently as amicable as this one though, we're all happy for you. In one
