"Well buster, how's it going? I'm doing okay. Just traveling around, I'm down just outside of New York City, getting ready to do some interviews today on another topic after being at Fenway Park last night, so it's a scramble this morning. It's not quite a baggage claim Monday, but it sort of feels like that. I know how much you loved your late mom. And so I actually thought of you last night when watching this, this was large newt Bard doing an interview with Eduardo Perez on Mother's Day Sunday. And we didn't tell Lars that we had a bit of a surprise for him. Give a listen to this. How important is she to who you are? Yeah, she's everything to me. There's my mom right there, man. She's everything. She's everything to me, really. She's my rock. She's my everything. She's my best friend. And is this live right now? Right now. Oh my gosh. The emotional, man. How's it going? I'm good, how are you? I'm good, I'm good. I don't know why I'm getting emotional right now, man. Thank you for the flower. Special. Absolutely. Thanks for everything. I love you, baby. I love you too. You guys are messing me up, man. That's my best friend. You guys are doing this to me, man. I only get emotional. When I see her, I only get emotional when I see her. I love you, mom. So, Tim, large new bar was basically speechless. He was weeping when he saw his mom on camera. Yeah, I saw it, and I almost started to cry myself. I must say that father, I mean, that mother, son, relationship, is a pretty good one. You know all about that buster and so do I and it was that was very emotional and he's obviously very emotional and none of that surprises me. Our moms are so much better that they're so great and they carried most of us to this point in our lives and clearly Lars mother did also. And that's why he reacted that way. We probably shouldn't have ambushed him like that, but it does show the real emotion when you see your mom on the other end. It would have been great if she just walked into the booth, but that might have been too much. I've got other cardinal related topics that I want to get to and we'll do that in a little bit, but you know, I was scrambling around Fenway Park yesterday, getting ready for our game. And then I after the game I saw the headlines about Bryce Harper, charging the rockies dug out. What the heck happened there, Tim? Well, I'm not quite sure. We've got an emotional guy, Bryce Harper, and I think when he saw Joe Biden of the rockies walk off the mound, something must have upset him because he charged the other dugout. And Joe bird was giving it, I believe one of these hands up, like, you know, come get me type of thing. I'm still not sure what happened. And we need to check this buster. I should never speak unless I know for sure. I think this is the second altercation that Bryce Harper has been in on Mother's Day. I think that the hunter Strickland thing was on Mother's Day also look. I'm not making fun of this. You should not get in a fight. Period should never get in a fight on Mother's Day. I think that's what happened here is that Bryce Harper emotional guy did not like the way anybody walks off the mountain who celebrating and I'm not even sure I saw what was wrong about this. So I'm not assigning blame to anyone, but Bryce Harper is a very emotional guy. He's far less emotional than he was ten years ago. So something must have ticked him off and I'm still not positive what it was. All right, I'm checking this. I checked it as you were talking. That brawl between hunter Strickland and Bryce Harper had happened on Memorial Day. So Bryce, you know, so that's a good thing. Good. Thank goodness. It's good. Thank God. Bryce, Bryce acknowledged after the game that he's an emotional player, he's a fiery player. We've seen in many, many times in the past. And Taylor, jump in here, I just want to talk about the Phillies a bit because last week we got a bunch of tweets where people saying you jinxed the Phillies because I talked a couple of weeks ago and you co signed with me that the Phillies are ready to launch and then they just proceeded to lose a bunch of games. And then in the last week, Tim, they went the other way. And I think this is the time when they're actually going to launch. Yeah, again, buster. I love them at the end of last year and not because they went to the World Series, but because the way they presented themselves in the Clubhouse on the field, that was a college baseball team playing at the end of the year. And that is a real compliment. I saw the same thing in spring training and I saw the rob Thompson influence, which has been significant. And even with some terrible injuries, I said the Phillies are making the playoffs this season.

"You know what i'm gonna do. You know what i'm gonna say you know who's having a pretty okay. Little year wayne right adam. Wainwright is thirty nine did you. Wainwright is thirty. Nine is forty actually birthday. that's right. He's an end of august guy. Adam wainwright yeah. I don't know if i have a ton more to say about that. The folks can't check out in the piece that ben clemens wrote about weighing right at the end of august maybe right around. His birthday was but like his sinkers effective striking out some more guys. i don't know he's just. He's adam wainwright in his old. He and melina just had their three hundredth start together. Yeah battery and he said he wants to be back in twenty twenty two and melina is already signed to be back next year so they will hopefully extend that total in. Yeah while you were away. Ben clemens was on and we did talk a bit about wainwright so but but prior to that. He's really had not talked about him. Actually sure and i can make a different pick if you feel like so. I have not talked about him with you on the path cashiers. I call really so so yeah that counts and he deserves to be talked about. He's been great. Yeah adam wainwright all right. I will take austin riley fair. He has been the best player on the braves share. I think i mean going by war and obviously a kuni has been out in stroke has been out in. Anderson is ms taivon other guys mistiming. Osuna has not played for them much in on wync. They have lost a lot of guys. They were counting on. But that just makes it. Even more important that austin riley has stepped up and he was not an all star or anything but he has totally turned it on. He sit in. Oh one 373 five thirty one with twenty nine homers in five hundred sixty five plate appearances. He has been a mainstay in that lineup. And in the field at third base and you someone who when he came up in two thousand nineteen he sort of you know he was a prospect and he caused a little bit of a stir initially like he. He came out of the gate quickly and he was raking for awhile and then the league seem to adjust perhaps and he did not adjust back right away and was sort of struggling and last year. He did not hit particularly well in the small sample season. He was a blow average hitter. But this year you come back. And he's played like a an absolute star at a time when they really really needed someone to do that so he is kind of. I guess you could put him in the post hype sleeper category. 'cause four first-round pick and prominent prospect but didn't pan out immediately but it has really panned out all of a sudden this season and they've needed it. It's really amazing. How they have managed to remake their offense and lighter judges. We've talked about that some but it's really incredible we could. We could probably have. Adam duvall on this list. He certainly fits the bill. So yeah i think that's a really good pick. Maybe we'll stay in the braves area but nocco that undue law. I'm gonna mutate dance. Be swanson sort of similar. He's sort of in that similar more. We we were always going to view swanson in in the context of the the blockbuster trade that brought him to atlanta and you know he's he was like fine and then he was at times kind of underwhelming but he's been worse like over three wins and he hit twenty six home runs and he's been defensively valuable for them. He's like walking a little less but also striking out a little bit less and definitely hitting for for a bit more thump. So yeah dance be swanson how. How many of these are doing. Should i say more about dance. He's wants to or should we take the short ones where we can get. We're doing our our plan. Was like eight rounds. We'll see where we end up but yes hauser's when you Told me that many hauser's so we'll see what we get to. But i will take tie. France earners service to and from your but yeah ty france now he is someone who was good last year too but there was some question about whether that would continue rate. And i remember i think when we did our mariner season preview segment. That was a question like is actually good. Could he keep doing that and he has kept doing that and he has done it in a way that may be gives you even more confidence that he can keep doing it because he had a three ninety bab last year when he had a one. Thirty two wrc. Plus this year he has basically the same wrc plus one twenty eight but with a three thirty babba. So he's sixty points of batting average on balls in play and yet he has been really good regardless and he's hit two ninety one three sixty two four forty seven. He is hit sixteen homers in five hundred fifty. Five plate appearances. He is also leading the major leagues. In times hit by pitch. He has been hit by a lot of purchase this year. He's been hit by twenty two. I believe twenty two times. And that's also interesting because we talked recently about austin adams the patriots reliever who is like on a historic hit by pitch pace and these two guys were traded for each other among others. It was a bigger trade. But thai franson austin adams. Were part of that. Padres mariners exchange last year and now adams leading the major leagues in hitting daughters and tie france leading the majors in being hit by pitches so that will give you a nice boost so i don't know if that is a skill or not it. It doesn't seem like he was getting plunked at nearly the same rate in past seasons. So maybe that is not quite so sustainable and maybe he hopes it's not sustainable because it probably hurt sometimes but he has been good he has just been a good solid contributor to that offense in a thirty four th round pick from twenty fifteen with the patriots so to make the majors at all as a third or fourth round pick is pretty impressive and to be as good as he's been is even more impressive. He's been like a three four wind player. Depending on your win metric. That's a good pick. He was on my list. He's exciting because you know there was. There was like a chance that whoever sort of filled in for of and white was going to make mariners fans feel like he was a good first baseman because of and white has just had such an injured and bad year but like francis legitimately quite fun And so that's that's pretty cool even even absent the contrast so that's a good pick. Okay i'm going to take whore. Hey polanco oh then hit blanco. Having a good year with four point one wins per graphs. war one twenty nine. Wnyc plus. He's gonna one twenty nine wrc plus so he you might remember was injured. He had an ankle injury and he was pretty compromised by like his His is so last year was point zero nine six. That's very good. And he hit four home runs granted. It was the short season but he was just clearly quite compromised and He seems to be back to full. Health is hit twenty seven home runs and the contrast between last year and this year is particularly stark. When you look at his left split. He's his switch hitter but things have improved for him pretty dramatically compared to last year like his barrel rate went from four percent to nine point one percent and his heart hit rate went up. He went from thirty two to thirty seven his exit villager up. This is true across the board. But it's particularly stark when you look at him hitting from the left side and he gave. He gave a twins fan. Some fun and excitement by just doing like a bunch of walk-offs did he. Did he did three walk-offs and so among the wpa when the leaders if not the wpa leader and He was the first player with a walk off. Rbi in three straight team wins since david ortiz in the two thousand four playoffs and the first in the regular season sends tony pena in june of nineteen eighty two. So any year that has been a disappointment and pretty underwhelming the twins and their fans. I think they have to be pretty excited. That he looks like he is back on track. Because you know he'd had that look really great twenty nineteen and everyone was so excited in with the injury and stuff he was. He was quite poor last year. So yeah or hip lanka. It's good one man. I'm still looking at the the raise bullpens because they have like they have basically a whole bullpen on the injured west in jefferson. Yeah and yet. They also like just unbelievable like intricate. Dredge has a one point. Oh seven yara. In fifty eight and innings pitched hunter strickland has one point six nine year a jt. How do you say forget show I believe yes so one point six nine year a collin mchugh one point seven four. Era adam conley two point three era. Whistler has a two point three era gp fire..

"Twist, bouncer hit the first couple hops right to wait. Who's going to Sprint to the bag for the put out that retires the side and Giants fans ago? Stand up for Cueto's really pitch Well today. After kind of a shaky start. That could be it for him. Seven strong for Johnny Cueto here on Memorial Day Monday and, Yeah, Johnny, Walking off the field slowly wave to this nice Giants crowd. Cool moment for kwaito. Indeed, itwas Johnny Cueto's seven strong innings. One run five hits, allowed five strikeouts, No walks. He did hit the one batter two different times, and that was it. So Johnny Cueto with his fourth win of the year. He is the player we give credit to for their stellar performance. It's Johnny Cueto sponsored by Geico, a proud partner of Major League Baseball. Giants would get their final two runs in the seventh, and this had some significance in terms of allowing Gabe Kapler to bypass using his top late inning arms and keeping them fresh for Perhaps coming into hold on to a game late tomorrow. We'll see how that plays out. But Tyler Rogers was warming up during the seventh inning, getting ready to come on in the eighth inning. But in the Seven. Donovan Solano lead off the inning with a walk against the former giant hunter Strickland and then Duggar hit that. Shot out toward the deep part of the yard Right center field. It bounced up just to the right of the 4 15 marker and up off the bricks and then cleared the wall. Over the 4 15 marker for the automatic double. I think easily would have scored Solano from first base. Had it stayed on the field, and in addition, I think easily would have been a triple for the speedy Duggar. So he kind of got robbed of his R B. I. And who knows If that bonus stayed in the field and taking a funny bounce, you might have even been able to sprint all the way around the basis for an inside the park home run. We'll never know as it was a double putting runners at 2nd and 3rd, then talk when the pinch hitters struck out. And with Wade coming up fresh off his home run. The Pitching changes made strictly was taken out of the game and key Hatta left hander just brought up for the minor leagues today by the Angels came in. So the Giants countered that move with Wilmer Flores and while Wilmer was up The Giants. We get two more runs. One of them scored on this play. Leo to pitch is off.

"So subtle use of performance enhancing substances and you know, he's remembered for miss plays in the outfield and being kind of a goof and however, If you're talking about the greatest right hand hitters in the history of the game, and we're talking about poodles in that regard, and Hank Aaron when you know when he passed. This is one of them. And if you know, I voted for him every single time I saw his name on the ballot without not even thinking. I mean, this guy 555 homers with all that power is still a 3 12 lifetime hitter. He He drove in 100 plus runs like nine years in a row. He had six straight years with, you know, the O. P s and four figures. I mean, good grief. What a great hitter he was. So that's that's all I look at it. That's all I look out in the Hall of Fame, You know Sami, associate 60 homers three times. Okay. I mean, come on. Now You're gonna review going to say he doesn't belong in the Hall of fame that that's That's All I look at is the performance. I can't get into the moralistic judgments of the players. You know, there's probably guys have slipped in with that. We don't know what they did. You just can't do that. It just has to be about what they did on the field. And if you want to designate their their flaws on the on the Hall of Fame plaque, please do you know, but I don't see eliminating the guys who were the greatest players. Well, I put him in the broad category is Aziz cars being an impact player? And I'm glad you you listed the things he did Amazing. Maybe one of the best right handed hitters in the history of the game. Yeah, without a doubt. Yeah, thanks for their 1968 dictates, So they called Muley. You know, he was not a great catcher, but he was a good offensive player for the San Francisco Giants. Don Drysdale's on the man. He's going for his fifth straight shutout. The bases are loaded and Harry Windows staff the great empires behind home plate and Drysdale hits dictates to force in the one run that's going to break the streak. And Harry Wendelstedt says dictates you didn't get out of the way. I'm gonna make you stay here and Drysdale continue the streak and broke Walter Johnson's record but dictates Bruce goes down and Giants history for that one moment. He really does. He had a pretty good year in 1970, but he was not a you know, a glowing statistical marvel of any kind, but, um Training goes. Ron Hunt was on that giant steam and Ron Hunt's He got hit 50 times in one season. 50. We will really means that hit 44 times in his in 22 years. So Ron heads an expert on this and he was quoted as saying that When that pitch came in, dictates. He stood there like a post. They just see this. Stood there. Let it hit him. So it was. It was pretty bizarre. It zits harnessed the record a little bit. I mean, but I mean, like you say he was working on his fifth straight shutout. He went on to shut out the Pirates and the Phillies finally broke it up. But, you know 58 2 3rd Consecutive scoreless. I mean that Z beyond that's just That's that's unbelievable. I know it was the year of the picture, you know, but, uh, still, I mean, that that was that was that was some of the greatest pitching we've ever seen. Dictates goes into the history books for standing there like a post exactly. Yeah, one of the great giant catchers of all time. Dictates goes in for that. And, yeah, In fact, I was thinking Was it Howie Bedell? I forgot who I was gonna say. You broke Who on the fillies broke it up. You wouldn't think you would have thought, you know Richie Allen or Johnny Callison or something. How we've been dealt with Sally, but down. Yeah, I remember that. But I don't know why I remember it. I can't remember anything else. But I do remember a lot of things. All right? That's enough for me. Bill asking. Good morning. How are you? I'm doing Good guys, you know, watching his angel team is, as you guys just pointed out. There's a couple of relievers that we need to talk about. And that's Tony Watson and Hunter Strickland, both wearing the Angels uniforms, Watson Been in 19 games. 12 K six walks kinda up with the walks. He's two and two of the 4.100 Strickland they traded for. He's been in six games. He's only pitched four and two thirds innings, but he just had. I do believe you just said the anniversary with him and Harper and you know what you go. And and sure enough, he's right back in Oracle Park, So I like to hear both year for use on both these guys. Well, you know, I liked watching when he was here. He was really valuable. He seems to be a little bit in the twilight. I'm not sure I mean the fact That is with the Angels. Just because he's with the Angels doesn't bode well because things never seem to work out that they never developed that that lightning effective, you know, relief pitcher that's going to lead him out of trouble. You know, two out of every four nights, but S o. I don't know. I just no way I can Judge Watson. Tell it until I see him in this series. And you know Strickland, uh, we've talked about him a little bit like a very likable guy really live life fastball, light live stuff, and he's but he's moved around so much. He just tends to expose himself a little bit. Whether it's his temper or His pitch selection is command. He's had a hard time sticking anywhere, and I remember him being very well liked in the clubhouse and talk to him a couple times and real, that level headed guy well spoken and you like spending time around him. But sometimes a little switch goes off in his head and things things go awry. So I'd say, because they're both with the Angels. Not good. Well, I I told the Strickland story. You know if he had 35 saves the one year he broke his hand. But hitting the wall. Hey, was taking me moose hunting. So that was my You know, that's why that's why I always root for Strickland. But appreciate you nailed it. The command isn't there on you Know, years ago, he threw 96 97 blabbed Nobody through that hard. You know the sudden everybody throws 100 so.

"Uh, maybe wasn't over the goal line, so it's been addictive on. It's been pervasive through not just baseball, but all of basketball to all the sports. Yeah, I mentioned that Don takers. You're calling the 85 serious, Which people still talk about that was so crucial and so relevant to the outcome. But how many? How many other calls in baseball? Can you remember that this resonate like for decades? You know, there aren't that many. That's the only one that came to my mind. I'm sure there's others you go to different talents and they'll point it out. But It doesn't happen that often where it's a call that just you know, just just normally, It's okay. It's a bad call it ago things, even they even themselves out. Eventually, he'll get over it. Meanwhile, the game will be 2 30 set of 3 15. Yeah, Yeah, They're the Joe Mauer ball down the left field line that I'm sure I think it was a Tim McClelland, uh, missed it and in the playoffs of Minister It's one that comes to mind. But you're right. There aren't many that come to mind to say. Well, that really changed the game. Yeah, really had a big outcome on the on the world. Serious being one or something really huge. I agree. Let's look a couple of this stay in baseball history today together, Sal Maglie. Bruce. I remember this so well. He was a giant for so many years they would kill the Dodgers. Well at this point of the season, 1956 the Dodgers need a starting pitcher Magli have been waived out of the National League. The Dodgers brought him back here and up 13 and five new come 1, 27 and Magli got some Cy Young votes, and he became a a Brooklyn Dodger. And if you lived in New York in those days, you could not believe it. Magli was a Dodger. Oh, no, he he tended tol dominate the Dodgers when he was with the giant. They call him the bar because of the 10 music that he tossed up there. He was very, very nasty. They say he was actually quite a mild mannered, nice fellow, but he get on the mound and he was an unbelievable competitor. They had a bunch of fights between the teams over over being balls that were going on. And, um It's funny because in the 51 you know the the Giants win the pennant. He got that start in Game three against Don Newcombe, and he left for a pinch hitter after eight. So it was Larry Janson, who got the win for the Giants after Bobby Thompson hit the home run and Jets and through like four pitches. Magli didn't get a lot of the work, then he Yeah, go ahead. Very, very famous pitcher in the early fifties, and Bruce he he jumped to the Mexican League in the mid forties to get more money. And he was banned from baseball. And then they let him back in. And the Giants, you know, took him back. But he was gone for 34 years. Then he became the pitching coach for your favorite team to Seattle pilots with Joe Schultz. Yeah, he was. Yeah, I There's a couple of very wealthy, wealthy Mexican brothers offered the U. S players a huge amounts of money to go play in the Mexican league and he went for it. She spent the 46 47. Isn't in the Mexican League and commissioner at the time happy Chandler banned all these guys for five years, and he Meghan went back to Niagara Falls, where he's from and bought a gas station and pitched in Canada. And finally in 49. The ban was lifted and he joins the Giants and and you know, he you know, he was extremely relevant guy, you know, he started The vic. The Willie Mays. Vic words game. Uh, Magalie started that game. For the Giants, and he was removed actually so left he could come in and face Vic words done done little Is that little? Yeah, correct on little. So you just wonder if maybe there was still out there for words. Does he hit the ball it down the first base, or does he strike out? He was just he just shy of pitching to to Vic Wertz in that game, so he's he's a big part of a lot of history. Yeah, don little came in. And words hit that ball that Willie Mays caught the greatest catch over in World Series history. And little was in taking out of the game. Ondas. He left the man, they said to everyone. Well, I got my guy. Yeah. You know, he was actually with the Cardinals in 1958. But I looked it up. He never faced the Giants. He didn't pitch it. Candlestick has a member of the Cardinals in the Giants first season. So that interesting guy for sure. Yeah, Yeah. Good story. Sal Maglie. So he became a Brooklyn Dodger today. Um, let's bring Bill and Bill. Good morning. You know, you've been listening patiently here to the Bruce. Talk about baseball with me. What's on your mind? Well today, Hunter Strickland got traded. He was with Tampa This year, he went in as a minor league contract. He pitched pretty well. 16 inning 16 Kay's a 1.69 earned run average and the Angels pick them up. For a couple minor leaguers. He pitched with the Mariners and Nationals and the Mets after the Giants, But for five years, I thought he pitched pretty well for the Giants. I'd like to get both of your impressions on Hunter Strickland then and now and And what do you expect from him when he's in an angel bullpen? Because the bullpen in angels? They're struggling. They're they're really They got under red average over five as Ah, Compact toe order, So I'd like to hear both of you Talk about Hunter strict little bit..
