"And if you haven't yet subscribed to the CBS sports college basketball YouTube channel, please please, please knock that out while you're here. Let's get into it. What a wild weekend of college basketball we just experienced. It was one buzzer beater after another after another after another. I'll try to run you through just one off the top of my head. Arizona state's Desmond Cameron buried a buzzer beater from 60 feet away. Got Arizona state past Arizona 89 88. Florida state's Matthew Cleveland buzzer beater to lift Florida state past Miami 85 84. San Diego states Lamont butler buzzer beater lifts San Diego state past New Mexico, 73 71, three game winning jumpers in contest featuring nationally ranked schools beyond that. Iowa's Peyton sand for buried a buzzer beater at the end of regulation to force overtime in what was an eventual one 12 one O 6 OT win over Michigan state and elsewhere in the Big Ten Michigan hunter Dickinson. Buzzer beater at the end of regulation to force OT in an eventual 87, 79 OT win for the wolverines over Wisconsin. That's 5 end of regulation buzzer beaters that led to victories in high profile slash important games, Tom izzo did not fail up three Greg gard did not fail up three. Dead leg. Have you caught your breath? We had some nice finishes this weekend. I am trying to catch my breath. Come on now. This is what we're here for. I'm really trying to catch my breath. I just got screwed up on the time. I knew we were for some reason in my head. We were starting at 6 25 at 6 30 central as opposed to eastern. So I was literally outside like playing catch with my two little guys, and I was like, dude, you see like Colorado's almost over. And I think we were supposed to go right after that. What, and I was like, oh no, I got my eastern central time zone. But I'm here. You're here. And we're good to go. Last year on this weekend, member GP, like 7 of the top ten teams got beat. Remember that? Oh, I remember, I remember it like it was yesterday. We know that's not true. But you had again huge, huge, huge march vibes. I want to touch on everything that you mentioned there here in this opening segment. There is there is so much to get to. And I think line 17 item 17 is Illinois losing. We will get there before the show is done. We will get there. But we got to pull up. I don't mean to be speaking for watching on YouTube. I don't mean to be smiling at that. Let me give you, let me give my frowny face on. Nada, for those that are listening after the fact, you can debate this in your own head since you're not voting in real time on YouTube, not. What is the poll in the chat? And I see the chat's already on fire to start the show. I always love to see that. What is our poll question to start the show here? Our poll question is one that you came up with that was a really, really good one norlander. It was, what is the bigger shock? Florida state coming back from 25 at Miami or 11 points in 55 seconds at home from Iowa. JP? Bigger shock for you is? Okay. There are wild comebacks over long periods of time all the time. Come back some win. Down 20 came back and won. Like Kansas is down 15 at the half every other game comes back and wins all of them. Sometimes by 30 points. So while recognizing you accurately said it, Florida state is terrible. That is shocking that Miami could blow a 25 point lead to Florida state. But I think, honestly, it's a little crazier when you think about the fact that Michigan state was up 13 when 90 seconds left, up ten with 40 seconds left and lost that game. You see people erase 20 and 25 point deficits sometimes. You almost never see down ten with 40 seconds to go. I mean, the big comeback in a national title game we all remember 2008 Kansas Memphis. Kansas was down 9 with little less than two minutes to go. This was ten with 40. It was outrageous. Ridiculous. And we're going to start there. We do have some good audio to enjoy a couple of amazing, amazing calls that we are going to get to. But we're going to start with the game that ironically did not have the buzzer beater because Peyton Sanford had I think what two and change three to go. Overall, but it starts with so I get to the headquarters studio and I'm watching also the way this works, I think it broadcasts as well is the offices for headquarters on a different floor from the actual studio. So you kind of bounce back and forth and so I was up in the offices and it was 91 81 or wherever the hell it was and I was like, I literally said out loud to the people like cutting the highlights and the producers never. I was like, all right, there's nothing in the balance. I'm gonna go down to the studio and watch the rest of this and get ready for my head, 'cause there's nothing in the balance. So I go down, plug in my computer, get it all booted up, they got the games on the big screen. Awesome experience. The next thing I know, Iowa is within three and then like 7 seconds later, Peyton Sanford hits the shot to send it to overtime. Unreal. Malik hall hit a pair of foul shots with 94 seconds to go, I'm gonna run through this for you. Gave Michigan state a 91 78 lead. Also, by the way, shouts to Caitlin Clark, that building had something special going on this entire weekend. Gonna absolutely give love to Caitlin Clark. We are not dialed into the women's who scheme on this pod. Obviously, but speak for yourself. Okay. Okay. If you think I'm not. If I could share my screen right now, you would see you would see Caitlin Clark notes on my screen. Speak for yourself. Okay, okay. Fair enough. Apparently, Caitlin Clark, by hitting the shot, is conceivably now the FrontRunner for national player of the year in women's college basketball. Carver Hawkeye just named, you know what?

"Top rank Purdue was 20 and one following a 75 70 win at Michigan. The boilermakers scored 15 straight points to take a 41, 28 lead in the first half, but couldn't pull away. Zach headey delivered 15 of his 19 points by halftime and Fletcher lawyer finished with 17. Edie scored Purdue's first 7 points and finished the first half, 7 of 12 from the field. Purdue was 9 and one in the Big Ten, while the wolverines were 5 and four. Hunter Dickinson had a team high 21 points for Michigan, which played with that jet Howard because of an ankle injury. "Two things stood out. One, he was awesome. He was literally named MVP of the Iverson classic. And like case and Wallace played in this game. George played in this game. Case and while it's going to Kentucky 5 star guy, kiante George, going to Baylor 5 star guy, both projected top ten picks in the 2023 NBA draft. They were in this game. And Jed Howard was the MVP for the winning team. The other thing that stood out is just randomly talking to the NBA people who were there. I worked with JR Smith on the broadcast. Steven Jackson was one of the coaches. Darius miles was one of the coaches. Allen Iverson was there. And I don't want to say all of them said this, but this is certainly the consensus opinion among former NBA players there. Because they had come in, they put these kids through workouts in JR's case. He had worked out with them a little bit. And the thing I heard from multiple times from multiple guys was jet Howard's the most NBA ready guy here. Now, I don't think, I don't know, but I don't think JR Smith comes to that building with a great understanding of the 24/7 composite rankings. He doesn't know where case and Wallace is ranked any more than he knows where keonte George is ranked anymore than he knows where jet Howard is ranked. He's just looking at players. And he was like the most NBA ready guy here is jawan's kid. He's great. And then he went out one MVP. And so I think he's going to be terrific in college. But I am aware that the recruiting analysts who have seen him way more than I and way more than JR Smith and Steven Jackson don't agree. And I've actually had conversations with some of those guys, the recruiting analyst, off the record, just to see like, okay, what am I missing or what are you missing? And I've gotten some explanations for why he's lower in the rankings than where let's just say JR Smith thought he should be. But from what I saw, big guard. He's 6 foot 8. Big guard really knows how to play. Skilled the way you expect the coach's son to be. He looks like somebody who grew up in a gym. And it's fundamentally sound. And I'm with you. He is not ranked in his freshman class in a way that suggests he'll be a top ten freshman in America, but I won't be surprised if he's a top ten freshman in America. On jaylen llewellyn, one of the points Cobb made last week was, you know, if you're relying on an Ivy League transfer to help you be really good in the Big Ten, you know, are you, I'd be a little unsure about that. And I got a text over the weekend from an Ivy League coach. And he said, the thing you got to remember about? Yeah, listen to the thought. And just reached out just to make this point, which I appreciate it. He said, the thing you got to remember about llewellyn is he's not just an Ivy League player. He was a top 100 recruit coming out of high school. I didn't realize that. Yeah, I remember that being a thing when he got when Princeton landed him, yeah. He was top 100 in class of two 1018. I think ranked 99th, 124 7 spores. So this coach, and Ivy League coach, who's been coaching against him for years, said he is a Big Ten level athlete. He's super skilled and he's an established shooter. That's going to translate. He's going to be fine. And that reassured me a little bit about thinking Michigan is going to be fine. Because if you believe that llywelyn's going to be great at the one or really good at the one, that jet Howard is going to be really good on the wing and hunter Dickinson's back in the middle, you're pretty good at the one three 5. I mean, you're pretty strong there. And if you're pretty strong at the one three 5, you got a chance to be a really good basketball team. You mentioned Kobe Balkan. I do think he's got to fill a bigger role. You know, he's a top 50 prospect in the class of 2021, but only average three points per game last season only played ten minutes per game. So they need some guys to jump from their freshman to sophomore year, but I don't think they need any of these other guys to be stars. I think hunter Dickinson can be your star jet Howard can be your star. These other guys just got to play digger roles, play them well. And Michigan's got a shot to be really, really good. And for whatever it's worth, I don't know when we're running this question. But our candy coaches series is underway. And we're asking roughly a hundred coaches, a series of questions, one of them is obviously, who do you think is going to be the best player in the country this season? And I did have a coach over the weekend text back to that question, hunter Dickinson. Dickinson, yeah, that's going to run next so people listen to this the week as we flip into September here, I believe that question runs next week. I think Dickinson might have gotten two total votes if you got one, I think. So, but it can certainly happen. He would be, he would be there with, as far as I'm concerned, you know, someone like trace Jackson Davis has like a dark horse player of the year can not even that much of a dark horse, but when you have Timmy and Shibuya out there, they're going to be the dominant favorites. Real quick on the Ross thing. Devonte Jones came in from the sun belt coastal Carolina year ago, you know, best player in that league. He was good. I would say he fell short of the hype. Not to say he was bound. He was not about player. He was fine, but he shot 51 from two 34.2% from three. 79% from the line, solid distributor. He was good. I think lualan will be better than Jones was schedule wise. Regular season, win total. We're doing it again. Here are the games to know. By the way, Michigan's going to play eastern Michigan on November 11th, which is the day of the aircraft carrier game. Why am I bringing that up? Because imani Bates plays for eastern Michigan. That is that game has plenty of local intrigue and Michigan was erroneously attached to the recruitment of the Marty Bates when he went in the transfer portal. I think I reported this on the podcast, but that was never actually a thing. Nevertheless, Michigan versus DMU, that first Friday of the season there. And I'm sure mister Bates will have plenty of motivation there. The bigger games to know from Michigan and the non con. They're going to play pit and the legends classic, and then they'll get either VC Arizona state. We'll see. I'm not convinced that any of those three teams are going to be dancing. Michigan didn't do itself any favors in terms of an MTE, then they get home versus Virginia, ACC Big Ten at the end of November. That's a good one. That's a really good one. Real quick on that.

"All right, norland, I got Michigan ranked 19th in the top 25 and one that equates to second in the Big Ten. Most people think I'm too high on the wolverines. Am I too high on the wolverines? When you say most people, does this mean you've tweeted out version 15 and you've got fans up in the mentions? Is that what this stems from? It means whether it's Bart orbit dot com or buddy John rothstein or anybody else who ranks teams in the off season. I don't think I don't remember seeing anybody else have them where I have them. For instance, at Bart torvik. I think I heard a third. I'll say 32. 36th. Rothstein's got them 26. And Jerry palms got them as an 8 seed and his bracket, which equates to somewhere between 29th and a little high. Now, Dickinson made a significant sophomore job. I would even, I would argue that ever so slightly Dickinson might have been undervalued last season slightly not crazy. He was recognized as a very good player and the big town was loaded with a ton of talent and just so many good teams and players in the Big Ten last season. So, you know, you had two first female Americans there that weren't even expected to be the two best players in the league. In Murray and Johnny Davis there. But here was Dickinson's jump statistically freshman a sophomore season. He went from 14.1 to 18.6 points per game. He jumped from 7.4 Boers to 8.6. He was up to a block and a half a game, went zero for four from three point range as a freshman. He took 64 attempts from three last season made 21 of them. That's a 33% clip, which is solid. I would expect that to grow in his junior season. His offensive rating at kampong bumped from one 11 to one 19.9, if you're around one 20 as a player, you're doing just fine. So the question becomes, how much of a bigger jump will it be for him in year three? And then what the talent will be like around you mentioned Terrence Williams back. Well, Kobe bufkin, who was a bit player, will he grow into something that's a bit more reliable from a roll standpoint. Llywelyn was considered like top 20 level kind of transfer a very good player out of Princeton and wound up picking Michigan over Clemson in the 11th hour, so that's a good git that Michigan needed a player of his stature. Because remember, Michigan lost, you mentioned four of the top 5, but they lost, you know, Moussa diabate leaving and Caleb Houston leaving. I think if you would ask juwan Howard is hard of hearts at the end of the season when the day after they get knocked out of the tournament, I think he would have guessed he would get one of those two back. He doesn't, they lose both of them. So here we are. Joey baker is also here via duke, which is also unexpected. Joey baker actually initially announced and committed that he was going to spend his final year at duke, didn't go that way. We'll see what kind of role he has in this offense. I wouldn't expect him to be a top four option, but you never know. Jet Howard is the guy to be excited about alongside Dickinson. We saw him in person a year ago. He was the kind of player where I saw him play like three games at peach gamma, he was technically when I was when I was watching him. And to me, like the three games I saw him, and I was like, this guy is a top ten prospect in his class. And he was not rated as that. Like, I think at the time he was in the 50s or maybe even the 40s, but there's a ton to like about jet Howard's game. I think that he has got because of how much I think Michigan will need to use him and because of how much attention Dickinson's going to get. I think jet Howard statistically has a chance to be, you know, at CBS worst dot com. David Cobb inherited the frosh watch from me and he ranks the top ten freshmen in the country on a weekly basis. The chances that jet Howard is in that frosh watch, middle of the season, then at the end of season I actually think are pretty good. I really, really like his potential there. I wouldn't go as high to say top 20 for Michigan, but I certainly think they got to be in that top four in the Big Ten. And so with that, I put them somewhere in the 21 to 30 range, I think. Coincidentally, David Cobb and I touched on Michigan last week in a podcast because we were reacting to Jerry palm's first projected bracket for the 2023 NCAA tournament and one of the questions we were bouncing around was what team does he have too low? And I think cop said Ohio State because he had a lot of state as a ten seat. And I said, I agree. But if I'm looking for a different one, Michigan. And then we started talking about Michigan. And one of the points I met made about Jed Howard is that, you know, he is ranked 42nd in the class of 2022. Sub 40 prospect, four star guy, but when I was doing sideline at the Iverson classic for CBS Sports Network,

"<Speech_Male> Majority of them are not going <Speech_Male> to become professionals. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> But basketball players, <Speech_Male> but they're all <Speech_Male> or most <Speech_Male> will become an alum. And <Speech_Male> so I <Speech_Male> think that decision has <Speech_Male> to weigh way <Speech_Male> heavily on what <Speech_Male> they're doing. But <Speech_Male> to answer your question, <Speech_Male> it's simple. <Speech_Male> They're all <Speech_Male> living in sight <Speech_Male> instead of vision. <Speech_Male> They're all really <Speech_Male> worried about <Speech_Male> what's <Speech_Male> great for me <Speech_Male> now. <Speech_Male> Not <Speech_Male> what's the best for <Speech_Male> me later, a <Speech_Male> social media has <Speech_Male> a lot to do with that <Speech_Male> and coach. <Speech_Male> He alluded to <Speech_Male> this earlier. <Speech_Male> It's parenting as well. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Because, you know, <Speech_Male> one of the biggest things <Speech_Male> I've heard <Speech_Male> is when <Speech_Male> guys are making these <Speech_Male> decisions, <Speech_Male> the phrase, <Speech_Male> you know, <Speech_Male> it's what's <SpeakerChange> best for <Speech_Male> me. Well, <Speech_Male> well, just because you <Speech_Male> can put that sentence <Speech_Male> at the end of something <Speech_Male> you said <Speech_Male> doesn't make it <Speech_Male> what's best for you. <Speech_Male> And no <Speech_Male> one can <SpeakerChange> tell me <Speech_Male> that a college <Speech_Male> degree <Speech_Male> from <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Notre-Dame <Speech_Male> is not <Speech_Male> what's best for you. <Speech_Male> There can be some other <Speech_Male> things that are good <Speech_Male> and great. XYZ, <Speech_Male> yes, but <Speech_Male> that <Speech_Male> degree from whatever <Speech_Male> institution we're talking <Speech_Male> about, that's <Speech_Male> going to fall under the <Speech_Male> best for you bucket as <Speech_Male> well. And so <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> I think, <Speech_Male> again, I just think social <Speech_Male> media has <Speech_Male> really, really changed <Speech_Male> the thought process. <Speech_Male> Coach called it <Speech_Male> a change culture. <Speech_Male> And that's how <Speech_Male> kids are being raised. <Speech_Male> I mean, <Silence> it's really just <SpeakerChange> quite that <Speech_Male> simple. <Speech_Male> All right, well, <Speech_Male> listen, I know <Speech_Male> we've <Speech_Male> gone over the <Speech_Male> allotted, <Speech_Male> I know paints <Speech_Male> got to go hit the <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> portal. <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> Dan, I'm sure you do <Speech_Male> too. I'm done <Speech_Male> in the port. I better <Speech_Male> be done in that forum, <Speech_Male> man. And guys. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> You got no scholarships <Speech_Male> left, but <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> listen, I think we can all <Speech_Male> agree <Speech_Male> probably a <Speech_Male> little too much <Speech_Male> at one <Speech_Male> time as Payne <Speech_Male> said at the beginning. <Speech_Male> I think that's probably <Speech_Male> the bigger issue here <Silence> if we had kind of gone. <Speech_Male> You <Speech_Male> know, in stages, <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> it might have been a little easier, <Speech_Male> but I don't <Speech_Male> even think about you're right. The pandemic <Speech_Male> planning to it too because <Speech_Male> obviously getting the <Speech_Male> extra year as <Speech_Male> well. Anyway, <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> want to thank everybody <Speech_Male> for jumping <Speech_Male> on board Matt painter, <Speech_Male> Dana Ford Zach <Speech_Male> Charles hunter Dickinson. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Goodman and humble podcast. <Speech_Male> Rob, <Speech_Male> you did <SpeakerChange> well today. <Speech_Male> He did well. <Speech_Male> Then <Speech_Male> I do decent <Speech_Male> on most of these things. I <Speech_Male> don't know, co host. <Speech_Male> This was big for you. <Speech_Male> The <Speech_Male> wrong table discussions. <Speech_Male> That's the next step <Speech_Male> for me for sure. <Speech_Male> Paint's got to be proud. <Speech_Male> I mean, it's like <Speech_Male> looking at his <Speech_Male> son here. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> 38 <Speech_Male> year old son, but <Speech_Male> whatever. He's front, <Speech_Male> man. He's <Speech_Male> probably saying to himself, rob's <Speech_Male> attached himself <Speech_Male> to a loser like Jeff. <Speech_Male> What a great job. <Speech_Male> What did he do? <Speech_Male> What the hell <Speech_Male> went wrong? <Speech_Male> He was <Speech_Male> such a good <Speech_Male> path until he got <Speech_Male> with this guy. <Speech_Male> All right, thanks guys. <Speech_Male> Appreciate it and <Speech_Male> state of the game. <Speech_Male> Maybe we'll do it <Speech_Music_Male> again next year and it'll be <Speech_Music_Male> a little <Speech_Music_Male> bit easier. <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> Thanks guys. <Speech_Music_Male> Thank you. <Speech_Music_Male> Thank you for having me. <Speech_Music_Male> Thanks guys.

"To fix it as the right word because again, I think there's part of it. I mean, right now, you're gonna look at your bank account in a couple of months and be like, fix it. Fix what? I mean, this is great. And I don't blame you. I want you who has again like paint said, you have produced at the highest level. You've taken your team of the NCAA tournament. Deep in the NCAA tournament a couple of years ago. So I don't know, fix this the right word, what would you change? Yeah. You know, I think it's easy from a player's perspective. They shoot. I mean, keep it going, like, you know, we're the ones benefiting from it the most. But I think, you know, the biggest thing that I think would help is trying to limit that transfer portal as much as possible. I mean, the freedom of movement that players have nowadays, I mean, you know, even they say it's a one time thing, but you can transfer twice three times like there's so many ways to finesse it and nowadays to where players can, I mean, you've seen teddy Allen. He's better be out of 6 school. And he's not using the one time transfer. I think so many guys are able to like be to get around the rules to where I feel like finding out more of a structure for the transfer portal would help keep guys longer at schools like Missouri state to where they're able to continue to develop there and he doesn't have to try to get ten new guys every year. But in terms of like the money and paying, especially in the heist like Zach was saying the agency business and the grassroots businesses, I think one of the craziest and dirtiest places in the history, like, I mean, people are so naive to think that, you know, stuff wasn't happening before NAL. I mean, you're not getting Zion Williamson. At duke for free now. He didn't turn down that much money I Kansas and the job for his parents and all that to go to school for free. I mean, people are naive to think that, but I mean when you were ranked with hunter, what were you rank coming out of like top what? The recruiting says that like me, I was probably like top 40, I think. And without going into who, like, where people offering you money coming out.

"And then when it goes up to the press, the presidential is where it gets voted on or if it doesn't, the B one council, and there's no coaches on those committees. So we're sitting here fighting, and it's just, it's just our opinion. People say, oh, you're on the basketball oversight committee. I'm like, yeah, we make suggestions. We do stroll votes. We chew on things, but at the end of the day, we're not making decisions, but coaches aren't in that room. We got to get to where we're doing some things because we're not trying to knock off anything that is right for student athletes. We're trying to help student athletes and we're trying to help our game. So that's just a question coach. How do you get on the presidential committee? How do they no one knows? The presidents get on there. There's a handful. It's only a handful of others. How did mark did mark emmer become the president? I don't know. I'm not sure. He just was one day. You could probably figure it out. You probably figure out what happened there. Well, my question is, how do we get coaches on there? That doesn't make any sense. I keep asking. I keep talking about it because sorry, that sounds like a stupid ass question but I don't know, it's a very logical question and it's something that we keep asking and talking about because we were getting feedback from players and it really helps us, but we also have to understand like that's the reason I said that about families and stuff just because, you know, my mom used to always talk about, you haven't lived long enough. You haven't made enough mistakes to know what you're doing. And people that are, that's why the old wise man, you know, and you sit there and you listen to your grandfather, whatever and you think, oh, grandpa, here we go again. But he's just trying to help you. He's probably already made the mistake and your dad's made the mistake, and they're trying to stop you from making the mistake. So those things are important, man. We have to do a better job of really getting the coaches and listening to what's going on. So our game doesn't get punished here. Speaking of all wise men, hummel, we haven't really heard from you in your perspective so far as the grizzled veteran, the.

"Know, he talked about feel and pressure, I think he's choosing the wrong word because pressure is something that you feel when you're not prepared. He had a great high school coach. He had a great AAU program. He's got a great family. He's at a great institution. He's made really, really good decisions. You know, besides the Purdue thing. Hey, good job, got a good big man too out of it. No doubt. No doubt. There you go. You know I'm messing with you. I'm getting my jabs in early. But he's been so productive and he's always been a worker. And I just hope this doesn't leapfrog that because this is his time to be really successful in these other guys times to be really successful, but rob, as you know, like you have a short, realized how short your window is. I think he made a really good decision, you know, 20 years ago, you know, some of these guys that are bigger wouldn't be making the same decision. I don't know Zach would be making the same decision. I don't know if hunter would make the same decision because the NBA was different 20 years ago. But now, you know, they have these things in place, and so now like hunters said, you know, it's the right that they're making the right decision for them. Like he made the right decision for him. Zachary made the right decision for himself in so like these things like we like that piece of it, but you're talking about two productive players and like now when now you've got to put things together for people that are out there on the wire. So to speak and they haven't done anything for your program and then maybe somebody in your program isn't quite at that level with name image and likeness yet on your campus. That's where the dissension is going to like, that's going to be tough. Now I think with good cultures, Michigan's got a good culture. I think we have a good culture. I think our locker room stay pretty strong because of that. Now some places where they're moving more and they got all the changes some more. I think that's going to be a lot harder because that I always say about a player. Like you got your family, you got your religion, you've got academics, you've got basketball, and then you've got your social life..

"To do what? That's not an NIL deal, right? The NIL was not supposed to be, let me entice you to come play for my school, right? It's supposed to be, hey, let's sell hunter jerseys in our arena. And when he gets that, when everyone's wearing his Jersey, he's going to get a profit share of that because they're buying his Jersey. Not let's have some conglomerate come in with a lot of money and start to create collectives. And I'll say, hey, we have $10 million, or now UF is building a collective, right? Soon Michigan is going to be able to collect it. And everybody else, right? That's the problem that we're going to run into here. And if we don't put the kibosh on it now, it's going to get younger in the grassroots game. It's going to get more complicated and the money that's going to be out there is going to be dirty money. And we've seen what happens when that happens. Those Clark Francis elementary school rankings really would be important for those days. Hunter, let's switch gears a little bit. "Well, who stays? So if you're at a low to mid major school, like if you're at a high major school, you can just go and get somebody. It might not be ideal, but you can still have a better chance than a low to mid major to go getting them. So I didn't think that was that was fair. The other thing that the NCAA has done is we've really done a great job in growing our graduation rates overall for men's basketball student athletes, but we've done an unbelievable job in the last ten years. African American student athletes and their graduation rates. And then it's been unbelievable. I don't see how this is helping that cause. I'm not saying it's totally devaluing education, but when you transfer one time, I think that's a manageable deal. I really believe so. But when you're playing at three and four schools, I don't know if that's, that's manageable from an educational standpoint and what you're trying to do. So when you're making decisions, the reason I bring this up is you can't just sit there and think about Michigan and Purdue. You got to think about everybody. And I just didn't think I didn't think it was right for all these things at the same time, but I really didn't think with the one time transfer that that was fair for the low to mid major schools, individual one, not to really talk about it affects everybody. So it affects NIA, it affects division two. It affects division three. Maybe not in the same capacity, but it's still affects them. Hunter, I want to get a player's perspective from you. We've even seen guys going to the transfer portal to leverage and get more NIL at other places. You said yourself, and I always a big part of why you came back to Michigan this year. What's your experience been like with this? Yeah, for me, I think was pretty big for college hoops. You know, I think a lot of people complain about how the stars aren't staying enough and college basketball and, you know, I feel like without NIL, I think you would have seen a lot of the top players who've already announced that they're coming back. I think they would have probably stayed in the draft or at least tested. You know, you see guys like Armando and Oscar who didn't even and myself who Dave and try to test because, you know, we feel like the situation that we have coming back with NIL and just another chance to be able to develop, we feel like, you know, is the best decision for us. I think NIL has been big because I think it's been bigger than what people expected. My coach painter said, I think, you know, with the recruiting aspect, I think that's made it a bit harder. You know, for people to kind of legitimize, 'cause it's like, you know, the NCA really didn't want it to be a recruiting pitch, but I feel like nowadays, that's one of the first things that caused coaches are saying because, you know, I know for myself, if I was a senior in high school, you know, I would want to see what I'm getting, you know, you see it on Twitter, Miami, before the guy even signed his paperwork, they already heard is that IL deal out there. And so, you know, recruits see that they even had a player on their own team to try to hold them for ransom because I mean, he saw the deal and he's like, wow, I'm not getting that..

"All right, welcome in to another episode of the Goodman and hummel podcast. I'm Jeff Goodman. He's rob hummel and rob, we got some other people on. I got bored of you, so I wanted a spice it up a little bit, talking to you is sometimes like talking to the wall. So I figured I'd bring on some people here who would entertain me and educate me and inform me a little bit. And one of those people is you know well. Your former college coach, you probably made you run many a sprint over the course of your career, not painter. I deserve it though. I deserved all the sprints he made me run. But no, I'm looking forward to this. There's a lot to talk about here. So this should be this should be really good. Yeah, we're going to talk about kind of the state of the game right now with everything that's going on and it has been crazy. Over the last couple of months and we've got Missouri state head coach Dana Ford to give us kind of the mid major perspective a little bit. Paint gives us the high major perspective, hunter Dickinson of Michigan gives us the player perspective and Zach Charles, who's worked for a couple of agencies and has been certified agent for the last ten years. We'll give us the agent perspective. All right, so like I said, it has been a whirlwind. I think over the last couple of months, I don't know if anybody saw this coming to the extended has with just all the changes within college basketball, whether it's from NIL, whether it's from the one time transfer waiver, so I'll start with you, Matt Payne of the big question is obviously, why are where we are? Number one, and, you know, your thoughts of kind of what it's like right now. "Maybe this isn't interesting at all. Maybe this is just obvious. But when they were struggling early, it was like, you know, the very simple. What's wrong with Michigan? The simple answer was hunter Dickinson is back for a sophomore year and he hasn't really taken a jump. You know, he just kind of looks like the same player. He's producing it more or less the same level. And the two 5 star freshman aren't playing like 5 star freshmen. And so we're good last night. They sure did last night. That's my point. When you lose what Michigan lost and then you are replacing it with 5 star freshmen, the only way to maintain what you were or improve is for the 5 star freshman to play like 5 star freshman. And they didn't at the beginning of the season. But they did last night and hunter Dickinson played like a different player last night. He got 22 points, 9 rebounds against that Zach ED trevion Williams front line. And he's been on a real tear lately. Past 5 games, hunter Dickinson is averaging 24 points and 8 rebounds. On the season, he's now averaged in 18.3 points 8.3 rebounds. So why is Michigan suddenly different team? A lot of different reasons. But among them, hunter Dickinson has taken it up a level and the two 5 star freshman are starting to play. They're not just good prospects anymore. They've become good college basketball players. Produce defense was so bad last night, Gary, that they made hunter Dickinson look like jaren Jackson junior in threes out there. No, and he's shooting a not bad percentage from the he obviously doesn't take a lot of them, but he's made that shot. This season. So again, I don't want to pretend to be Jerry palm. I'll let him. First of all, by the way, I just pulled it up. They were not on the bubble last night. This morning, palm's got them first foreign. So he's got a last 400 last four in. Yeah, got it. Okay, so there you go. According to Jerry palm, they're now on the correct side of the bubble. Which is, I don't want to say amazing. But not something I think we would have predicted. You know, when they were 7 and 7 overall, one in three in the Big Ten. It looked like, you know, this might just be a Michigan team that goes down as one of the biggest disappointments in the country. Start the season preseason top ten. But now they've got it headed in the right direction. And congrats, Michigan fans. You're now in the field of 68 as projected by the great Jerry palm. "The start of the games and we'll get into the feast week real quickly. And the Virginia used to game, but Illinois. Tough, tough loss, they did not play well. That's probably an understatement. Great win for marquette. Andres Cabello just seemed to me like at a sort, whether it's, you know, you're losing your security Brian. I don't know if it was Kofi coburn or I would assume, but it seemed like he was trying to do too much. Just quick question for you guys. Concerned about Illinois or, you know what, Mark can't do what they had to do to win. Yeah, I'm concerned to the extent that I think Andre Cabello is feeling a lot of pressure. I mean, I don't just Sue me, not only was their best perimeter defender, but when it was time for them to get a bucket or to make a play, he had the basketball in his hands and stuff, when you're the secondary guy, you can kind of play a ton of free and fast because Batman in that case, I don't see what was there to kind of cover up your mistakes if you will. But now playing without Kofi coburn to your point Seth, he was just trying to do just playing too fast and trying to do way too much. And I think when Kofi coburn gets back out there on the floor, I think that'll settle him down a little bit more because Kofi will be taken up a lot more room, obviously in the painted area, and it allowed him to play within himself. I watched on an Andre cabrillo that was putting the weight of the world on his shoulders and trying to do everything. And he just doesn't play as efficiently that way. That game pissed me off. The reason it pissed me off was because of and you don't want to piss off J billis. You do not. But Kofi coburn's absence was just wrong. And, you know, right now, the NCAA is going through a constitutional rewrite and the constitutional fentanyl so they don't unduly punish athletes anymore. And yet they continue to do it. They just did it with the UMass tennis program. They're doing it where they did it with Oklahoma state basketball and they did it to Kofi coburn. What did he do? He gave money to charity from some of his memorabilia. When he thought, and he thought he was going pro. And he decided to come back, which we should all celebrate and welcome that a young man. Our young person is coming back to further their education. And play in a multi-billion dollar business and make us a bunch of money. And what do they do? They suspend them for multiple games, which benefits no one. And look, we could draw some parallels and say, well, you know, but yet the serious things happen, there are no suspensions, but while the constitutional issues going on, we're continuing to do this. And all I could think of is this is needless and wrong and what lesson is being learned. Like Kofi coburn will never donate to charity again. I never do that again. It just really pisses me off. Yeah. All right, we don't want to piss you off, so now I'm gonna pitch it. What was your take on Michigan? Obviously, I thought that first of all, I really like seat and hall's team. I think they're older, start 5 seniors. They have a physicality about them a sense of purpose. I thought they talked to Kevin war today a little bit defensively. They're really good. I think they're going to catch up offensively. Michael Smith was a pretty good player. And gave him a little bit more direction, concerns about Michigan. Obviously hunter Dickinson, they had like 32 38 points in the paint, but I didn't think the ball moved the way it had a year ago. They've got really good players today is going to be a good player obviously Caleb Houston struggled shooting the ball yesterday. How good is seat hall? How good do you think Michigan is and is this just a game two good teams played in someone's got to lose? I think seat and hall is way better than they're getting credit for. Not that you're doing this, but this has become about Michigan, more so. And I guess that happens when your top 5 top ten team and lose. But that's the value. We say we want these big time games to start the season and then the team loses and everybody snaps their cap over it. And again, not that we're doing that. But I think Michigan just shot it poorly. But you know, at the same time, they had two free throws to tie the game and send it to overtime. So if you take it to, you know, essentially a week ago when UCLA and Villanova played that barn burner if Justin Moore makes that shot over jaylen Clark at the end of the game, we're talking about how tough and great Villanova is and maybe UCLA is not as good as we thought. When the truth is, they're both kick ass good. And they're both they're both final four contenders. You know, so, you know, maybe if those two free throws go down, which is not a stretch, Michigan wins that thing in overtime, and we're talking about a great they are. You know, look, the three of us know and a lot of our listeners know that these games are important barometers for where you're going to be. They're not the be all and end all. And maybe we can see a ceiling that some team has or maybe a flaw or two that they can work on. But you know, I can't remember the last time we got to the lead 8 and said, hey, remember that game in November? That could be a problem. You know, thankfully, this isn't football. Games have no favor that became a problem for me, Mark..

Michigan is as top team in their league

"Michigan looks tremendous hunter dickinson is. This is one pat myself on the back here. Real quick this is when i had nailed before before the season started i thought hunker hundred dickinson was going to wind up as top ten freshmen. In america. this season informed by a couple of things one. He was awesome as a recruit and he was. He was highly lauded like blue chip of recruit. But he wasn't by the time he finished his high school career. He wasn't in that top. Ten range But i pre- pretty sure you saw him right alongside me In some of the games that he played on the summer circuit and he was great and knowing what michigan loss from a season ago and how. I expected him to be used. You know. I didn't think he'd be the team's best player. He's been the teams best player. I thought it would be isaiah. Livers in franz wagner and then dickinson three dickinson's awesome so Certainly a shout to him and he has been able to step in. You know as seven foot seven one kind of guy and just be a problem for opposing teams If you listen to the podcast now you're in on him early. He could be one of those players that once college basketball is more you know generally talked about the games are more prominent. The nfl season's over college football season's over you might start to hear a little bit more. See a little bit. More buzz about hunter dickinson but yes michigan is right there at the top of the league right now whether you want to argue is in michigan wisconsin illinois obviously rutgers and northwestern iowa who's the best of the big ten. Nobody knows but right now. Michigan is the only one in the entire league that can say it's played and not taking a loss and it's done that With eight games under its belt so very impressive right now and sitting at the top of the week.
