"I singer during the great cataclysm that will surely befall our civilization we began this monumental reference of strange obscure human knowledge these recordings represent integral and you want to have that one hundred rebel loves a comeback you wouldn't call me on it if this is an issue in your pomez it is in ours in your era as it is in mine I encourage you to check this out again that's thirty dollars off when you visit meet circle dot com and enter omnibus at again western Pennsylvania never untamed if he's from Pittsburgh town he's in western Pennsylvania so they're headed out Ohio it could be the and he's jealous of their their obvious kind of strength and fortitude because he's kind of they're kind of rough he man and he's he's like you said gangling Kabad cranked up why do I have to offer and he he's very in the cartoons very religious he's he's singing a song about the sun and the rain and the appleseed and how God has blessed his apples and in the in the cartoon at the time is his religion portrayed as a as a ver shoe or is it portrayed as a thing that that increases his nerdy no it's absolutely unquestioned virtue I mean maybe he's a little squeaky clean he's he literally leaves Berg town holding nothing but a Bible in a bag of appleseed and tinpot on his head see that's the great thing about about Culture American culture from the fifties that we watched in seventies which was that he's got a Bible he's awesome he was super unquestioning about like well Christianity at least everything else is going to hell but the funny thing is like the even in the seventeen eighty s or whatever this would've seven later eight seven thousand nine hundred hundred the the reality would have been a lot more complicated the appleseed did carry a Bible John Chapman did carry a Bible but not because he was just kind of vaguely religious benevolent guy he was a proselytizer devout proselytizing Swedenborg ine so the apples were just cover story no that was his day job I see what is Burgum do you know the work of Swedenborg Eighteenth Century Swedish Mystic Emmanuel Swedenborg no I'm kind of ashamed this gap in my knowledge I kind of tend I had to look it up I kind of lumped it in with the and all these kind of later quasi cult things and it turned out later there was quite a bit of over but he was just a Lutheran mystic who started having visions where he would go to heaven and go to hell and like go to Jupiter and Saturn and chat with everybody there start religion but he was but he was living in hoops solid or something so he did not have the chemical AIDS that you might have had like he he he's coming by this honestly I don't I don't think of Lutheranism as being a religion that has a lot of and this leads to some conflict because Sweden Org hs ideas were very odd by the kind of strict Scandinavian standards of his upbringing like he goes to hell and there's not a lot of torment there's people just doing the same kind of debauchery they were doing here and so obviously that's something that sounds pretty good right what's the where's the catch so a lot of I recruit seeks of Swedenborg are are trying to dissuade converts from joining because it was not unlike adventist or the Mormon movement or these kind of new branches of of of Christianity popping up scaring the Protestants right they have they have some some monopoly and now there are some other alternatives that are appealing and often led by more recent charismatic figures your Mary Baker Eddy Your Joe Smith Your Emmanuel Swedenborg and it's in this day Sweden Morgan's kind of revere him some kind of profit prophetic revelatory they're still Swedenborg you yeah it was called the new church because in their in their mind this is one of the weirder and to Protestant is more heretical things about them is that the last judgment has already happened in a few like the last judgement comes in ages it's like a you know it's like I don't know sports play off the great flood that was the final judgment for those guys'll it's a final four situation we are right it's like it's your era has its own thing and in Sweden Borg's mind the final the final judgment had happened in seventeen fifty seven when what happened in seventeen fifty seven the final judgment was there nothing outwardly his mystical visions have told him that seven hundred fifty seven judgement and now there's a new dawn for Christianity that needs a leader like him was just an administrative last judgement fiscal year somebody stamped piece of paper and put it in a file and it was like well done yeah the great flood happens in God has given accounting and the books balanced and he's like all right here we go it's fiscal judgment three wow okay I'm more and more convinced by this so you converted mystic we Johnny appleseed there's a lot there's a lot more I need to know so you know Protestant one weird Trick Protestants hate him they would have a the differences would seem very small to anyone who's not super religious he thinks that you have to do good things to save your soul And that's not Luther airy Catholics the whole reason lutheranism came around right and and his version of the trinity apparently splits hairs and a wrong way instead of thinking that God is triune you know three and one thing that the the God's son their son and Holy Ghost are actually just divine manifestations of the same one thing right you and I that might sound the same but if you're if you're a sufficient Lee doctrinarian Protestant you would recognize Swedenborg Harrison has modal ISM a real bugaboo for you know no I don't I don't follow that whole motorists trip those motorists have nothing to say to me and the fact that people were having fun in Hell of course it's a problem because they were baddest as Mohammedan like it was too Muslim oh too many wives in hell I'd like to have to have versions of Heaven and hell they're just like earth but like the good is still being good and the bad that's you know Christianity is very vague about the afterlife and we like it like that yeah well it's about how about how good receive their reward in heaven it's pretty specific about how the bad received their house kind of the same few tropes if you're actually read the like you know we looked at that Hieronymus Bosch painting a different entry and it was very baroque uncomplicated his imagination the Bible is just like there's a lake and it's on fire and people are supposedly you're going to be like ooh wow that's on fire I like lakes that are on on isn't Ohio in the seventy s it's good anyway so John Chapman would actually you know we picture him scattering his by the side of the rubber really he's shown up in town giving sermons and you know getting up on a stump and waving his Swedenborg Ian Flyers around and handing out literature and do you get an apple tree if you listen to the apple trees were to pay the rent so he again he's not just scattering see by the roadside like in the popular imagination he would actually he was he was smarter than that he would. create fenced in nurseries where he would plant the appleseed that he had brought from back east and although he was in the movie he surrounded by woodland creatures because he's forty s Disney character like the squirrels all love him and the skunks don't spray on him from the Birds Little Bluebirds tweet around his head rabbit is there and the in the in the movie like it's really pointed out that he's some early echo guy the first tecom without a knife without a gun to sell rhymes of course this being Disney in the forties and in real life that's true that he the Swedenborg Ian belief does say that all life is sacred so it's not just these past officed he's actually he wouldn't clear an acre he was vegetarian I know that I think he was I think he was against you know other other settlers of course we're clearing the land so there was plenty of places where he can say hey buddy wanna he can be the accident sit on the stump and not have the the sap on his hands but there's lots of Turn of the century bug Zapper basically and he feel so bad about this douse campfire 'cause he's like a genus of the people Kasan twitter all the time if you're like banks and S G W so social johnny wonder uh-huh so but but these stories maybe maybe try and the thing that he would not do because of his Swedenborg in beliefs about the sacredness of life is he would not graft an apple three Oh because that would be some kind of Frankenstein thing that would require the death of a branch or the death of the tree he took the brands from I guess whoa it never occurred to me that within the within the nurseryman person nursery persons that that there would be like varying ethics about grafting which seemed like it was like grafting was an incredible technology and ancient one with the that makes good fruit trees rather than just eating pie chart from what I understand this is actually what made John Johnny appleseed unusual is that he was because he did not you know pete an apple even grafting grafting is the way you get a fruit tree to keep producing good fruit because I guess you cannot just throw a golden delicious apple seed in the ground it doesn't get golden delicious thousand grow it comes back at as some it's like the dog it always ends up being a medium sized golden long eared coyote and I assume that's what it is right. It's a little little tiny mutations that actually separate apple from a bad one and you can't count on the next litter of your of your of your Mutt puppies all having the cute golden retriever ears or whatever Right is slice off the ears it put them on a new dock they returned to their to their native sourness and it's like just like me yeah and the and a- as we'll see we'll come back to this but you know people on the mayflower had been bringing grafted branches you know as far back as the PURITANS had brought grafted apple trees from Europe apples originally I domesticated in Kazakhstan and then got Swiss yeah isn't that were kind of cool and then got sweeter and better as they moved across Europe through the Greeks and the Romans and the kind of central Asian traffic that started to happen but he would not do it he would he would not he would not do it because it was an nation before God that's right double thing that's that's dedication you know And at the end of the Disney movie they talk about how he had a hundred thousand square miles of of apple trees and that actually is more or less the extent of his reach obviously that's not one huge apple orchard the size of one hundred thousand square miles that's huge that's gotta be a estate but but that was the rain that he traveled over his long life and he was I think like we see in the stories just on yrant figure that would show up with a Tin Pot on his head he would use his cooking pot as a hat for keep the rain out of his eyes and he would wear kind of burlap coffee sacks essentially the underwear of his of his a a pot on the head is not as comfortable as it sounds I don't even think it sounds confidence right was less comfortable than that it doesn't have any kind of I the I share eight or anything big handle put the handle out front but a pot is circular and your head is oval shaped that's exactly right yeah do you think he had a weird shaped pot the size of his head like the way people that time would have death masks may maybe Charlie Brown head although that would look really weird ache about grain body exactly maybe he had a Pumpkin for head like like the other Washington characters of the time the thing we don't say about Johnny appleseed is that he was actually despite the the idea may have given to you of him as Kinda vow of poverty kind of guy is he was very canny traveler the the laws at the time said that if you plant trees that's a homestead uh-huh he's gaming the homestead act he is working the system so he won't very cleverly fence off a nursery plant fifty apple trees and that's now his orchard and he can sell it to some local guy and then leave with the money at the time of his death he he was a land and he still owned twelve hundred acres that he had not turned over boo so he was flipping houses basically but apple tree version come on on what a savvy guy forget that a lot of the a lot of the great sort of Protestant the pious Protestant of of northeastern America were also super capitalists right the puritans were all very business oriented and this seems like it like a like a little sneaky but also like really savvy I assume they brought it with them because part of the from that part of England right the southeast east where I wasn't going to be racist about about okay well you know the English had had had that was the.

"Years. right now we're at the historic shared in in in downtown Sheridan Wyoming started construction in eighteen ninety two was finished and opened in eighteen ninety three it's tethered to the legend of Buffalo Bill Cody a lot of people know the Buffalo Bill addition his wild west show right out here on the porch and on the front lawn at the end and it's really connected deeply to the history and culture of shared and and Wyoming as a whole so the full bill of course is deeply connected to Wyoming she spent a lot of time in different sections of Wyoming auditioning cowboys cowgirls and other people who were involved in his wild west show that tour not only America but all over Europe so he would come to shared and set up shop and look for authentic performers to be a part of his touring show the folks that would come to audition for the touring show could be doing everything from shooting guns on the lawn to using ropes to any of the other crazy stuff that would happen in the wild west shows you have horses on the line you'd have cal boys cow girls bear research all sorts of folk from the crow reservation of the crow tribe and the northern Cheyenne which is just up in Montana would come down as well so you have a very eclectic group of western characters all collected here in shared and centered on the shared in in audition for the show the store shared and looks much today like it did back when it was first constructed in eighteen ninety two the exterior specifically this beautiful white clapboard building this gorgeous gabled roofs and windows inside it's been renovated over the last several ownership groups now Bob and in the towns in of common and completely renovated all the rooms each one name for a specific character in buffalo bill's life but what is still here from then is the original eighteen ninety three Buffalo Bill bar which is one of the most historic in spectacular bars not just in the state of Wyoming are probably still. existing in America there's a lot of people in this country who feel that this place is cigna has significant cultural cachet and historical significance not just for Wyoming but for all Americans it's a glimpse of of history as it was in the late nineteenth century there are not many buildings like this in the west that exist for a number of factors one were in Wyoming weather's pretty tough it usually rex havoc on places like this so to have a piece like this in the heart of our downtown is really significant we get calls every single day at the visitor center for people who want to come want to learn more just wanted to or even if they're not staying here so it's it's really a building that touches people deeply especially those who are interested in old west history Sean Parker executive director of the Sheraton travel and tourism. coming up our look at Sheraton continues as we hear from local author Sam western about Wyoming's economic history and the challenges the state is facing today. Sam was pushed off the mountain sold down the river. no state in the union that is a hundred thousand square miles has five hundred eighty seven thousand people has a single driver Connery has no ocean and no major city. we are we are utterly singular when it comes to state merit the part of depending on a pastoral grazing economy our ranch is that. the margin for folks on a.

"This is real news and information five seventy JLI yeah welcome back to the bench so if you've been following the media coverage of the trump administration which I'm sure you have you'll notice how dishonest a lot of it is well the latest element of dishonesty is the media accusing the trump administration of gutting the Endangered Species Act the idea is that president trump the rest of the administration they just like killing whales all the nice cuddly animals you see at the zoo they're out there ready to strangle them with their bare hands let's get real folks the fact is that the move that the trump administration is making on the Endangered Species Act makes a hell of a lot of sense there's a piece back in two thousand and two thousand thirteen by David better senator from Louisiana in which she talks about the Obama administration using the Endangered Species Act in order to basically trump trump and trample on local authorities in the ability of business people to do their business he said about US policy makers often ethnic variously for tactical sue and settle they settle in addition to their allies environmental groups behind closed doors in a way that advances their violent agenda blocking out of the process the citizens of states and local governments affected by their decisions and their subsequent rules and regulations so here's how it works one or more far left environmental groups to the federal government in this case under the Endangered Species Act claiming that the government is not satisfying its regulatory obligations then the groups in their friends and that the administration press the settlement agreement completely behind closed doors he says this tactic has led to extreme an abusive actions very near where I live in Louisiana there Washington bureaucrats are telling a private landowner his land cannot be used in any Comercial way that's driving its value down to near zero this is all to protect the dusky go for fraud a species that's alive and well in Mississippi but has literally not been spotted in that part of Louisiana for nearly fifty years so what is the new trump ruling that is apparently so terrible well no rules allow the administration there's going to Washington post to reduce the amount of habitat set aside for wildlife and remove tools that officials used to predict future harm to species as a result of climate change so basically what this this new thing does it says you're using these estimates of where these species are going to inhabit fifty years from now in order to rule out of use land right now and we're gonna instead look at economic impact on that we're gonna start taking economic impact into account which should be part of the conversation economics is merely the study of trade offs and pretending that they're no trade offs when you ban the use of land to preserve the dusky gopher frog that is in Mississippi but not in Louisiana that's a mistake Wilbur Ross the commerce secretary said the revisions finalized with this rulemaking fit squarely within the president's mandate of easing the regulatory burden on the American public without sacrificing our species protection and recovery goals under the administration's new rules it would have been nearly impossible to designate the polar bear as threatened in twenty ten because of the loss of sea ice in the arctic one of the fastest warming areas in the world nearly two hundred thousand square miles of barrier islands in Alaska were listed as critical habitat officials relied on climate models to predict how warming would impact polar bear habitat more than eighty years into the future the new rules called such predictions and out and said officials can now only determine impacts in what it described vaguely as the foreseeable future okay well this is true I'm sorry that this happens to be the case it happens to be the case that as the projections move further and further out there less and less certain with regard to climate change in the impact and species if all this were simple is as simple and predictable as environmentalists wish that it were it would be a lot easier the new rules limit the area of land can be protected help species recover and survive currently land that plants and animals occupy is set aside for their protection in addition to areas they once occupied or might need in the future could get any bigger than that now critical habitat that is not occupied might not be protected opening it up for other forms of development also a rule change trip to a language that said that the secretary the the the commerce secretary and interior secretary shall make a listing determination solely on the basis of the best scientific and commercial information regarding this species status regardless of cost well now they can look at the economic impact of the listing well that makes a lot more sense again these are trade offs to pretend that trade off do not exist is incredibly stupid but the way that we are treating this is though there are no trade offs but this is not from saying okay go out and hunt the whales that's that's the way that the the media are covering this is from saying free reign on the permafrost in the well that is not what this rule does and that is simply dishonest okay you're listening ugly day on Wall Street the Dow open down.

But in the morning, she's out again. Oh, funny. Oh my God. That now how does this compare to? I know there's seven hundred islands in the Bahamas but not many are occupied. No, I wanna do a little trivia, blue. All right. Tell me on bit Bahamas would surprise people, how many are actually islands are really occupied about. I'm thinking, I think there's only about twenty something that are actually inhabited that's crazy. And when they say seven hundred islands, it's real, it's a lot of those are key what you call keys, which is spelled C, y S. Right. And some of them may be nothing more than a big rock sticking up out of the water. But don't realize a lot of people will actually Email us inside. We're coming to the Bahamas. What can we bring you? And then I'm like, what island are you going to, and they told me the I like where x number of miles away from there? Let me hook you up with the group down there. "I mean, basically, Wyoming, and I think this is true another western states. We pride ourselves on our independence. And so when the federal government comes in and tells us without listening to us what to do with the public land is the problem. So I think with this administration. There are concerns. In different parts of the state that there will be drilling allowed everywhere are which would interfere with key wildlife habitat wildlife migration corridors and we have a world class wildlife population in Wyoming, and again, we feel like we know how to develop the energy resources without interfering with those other uses which were equally important to us. But you but Washington in it doesn't matter who's in the White House. This is like contention needs to to listen to people at the state level. The only thing I love more than a governor governor who talks about federalism. So you're really checking on a lot of boxes from here. About the Clean Air Act. But that would get too far into the weeds. We like the weeds an PNC politics. I I want to ask you what it is like to run in a state like Wyoming. I can imagine just reaching voters is challenging you would be the first woman governor of Wyoming since the late nineteen twenties. What what is experience been like for you? It's been tremendous. I've been crisscrossing the state for over a year. And you know, everywhere I go I have wonderful sort of surprise in counters with people. So last night after debate we went out for dinner and the women who were who were they are working at the bar where we're excited to see me. And you know, they wanted to take their picture with me two nights ago. A woman came out of her house in her bare feet to allow while we were door knocking and then just today met a gentleman in a convenient. Store when we stopped for gas who told me he appreciated what I had to say. And then he sent me an Email saying, you know, he's conservative, but he believes we can't continue with the status quo building. And so he's he supporting me, so it's very retail politics. In Wyoming are voting population is reasonably small it's just that they're spread out over a hundred thousand square miles while I've seen some coverage in preparing to talk with you of your debate performances. And you seem to be receiving accolades across the political spectrum for your knowledge in preparation, which is certainly coming through today as you talk with people and kind of build that expertise on a variety of issues. What do you think is the number one concern in the minds of Wyoming voters going into them at terms people? Generally know, we need to do things differently. In Wyoming that we can't go on. As we have in the past. And really have a bright futures estate in particular in the area of education or healthcare. There are a number of younger voters who are more engaged the millennial population broadly speaking, and they they want to stay here. But it's hard for them to stay here. Because we don't have a lot of of job opportunities for students who get any sort of advanced degree. And so they really want to see why try something different. I mean, they'd rather have his try something different. You know, maybe not get it perfectly right than just keep doing things the way we have. And I people in Wyoming appreciate honesty, and they appreciate you being straightforward. And that is really what I've tried to emphasize. I've been willing to talk about our tax structure, which you know, is political suicide supposedly, but actually are. Democratic governor also spoke about our tax structure. And so I think in Wyoming, people prefer honesty or than anything. What would you tell a woman considering running for public office?.

"Yeah, I, it's a David and Goliath, YoM argument, and the other thing is they're still here. I, they still hold just in Iraq and Syria. They clue. They hold between nine hundred thousand square miles of territory which is four more than they held in. In twenty eleven two thousand twelve when American forces were drawing down when they would consider defeated the last time around and and their presence is growing in places like Afghanistan, Nizhny, air, Libya, et cetera. So I think that there's going to be a period of dormancy and then something's going to happen. The most notable thing stuck with me the most from yellow podcast. I don't remember if you're saying or you're quoting someone on this that we should fear ISIS ability to govern? Yes, out there. Fear to conquer some sometimes man in that, yes. This is from an ISIS, a person who's written a book about ISIS, and he said, we should be more afraid of ISIS capacity to govern then of their fighters, which I read as the blueprint is out there now and the blueprint of how to drive in with some fighters and take town always existed. It's right. The blueprint of setting up a government bureaucracy is the pick up the trash. Yes, you would think that a municipality would be able to to figure out how to do that. But in a place like Mozell deer, rocky government completely dropped the ball and the fact that ISIS could come in and ensure that the streets were cleaner than they were before. That's a big deal, not to people. And right now as we get further and further from the liberation and as whole stretches of Iraq and Syria remain in ruins. People start to look back with the beginning of nostalgia for what they remember of of terrorist rule. Obviously, the minority of people sure by amac minority to begin with, they were minority to begin with, but this is a group that has studied people's grievances and they figured out a couple of things that one them points with people, and that is the thing that I think is most dangerous about them. So where does that leave you? I mean, I'm working full health. I've I'm heading to Syria and Iraq. Soon have a couple of stories that I wanna pump out. I have a couple of ideas to do. Africa about ISIS related themes there. Yeah, I just keep going right. Will you come back and talk about these experiences so long, you know, chapter three. Sure, absolutely booked. Now it's total pleasure. Thanks for listening to long forum. Thanks to my guest Rupe mini column Ocoee. Repeat guest. Thanks to my co

"The pacific ocean and we've talked about this before and there's new research that has come out from the ocean cleanup foundation and they say that right now the blob of plastic that is growing in the ocean get this it's the equivalent of five hundred jumbo jets five hundred jumbo jets is how deep the blob is and then it it's spread out the whole blob is spread out it's about two great states of texas and they say one of the biggest problems that they're having here and it's mostly plastic and there's five of these blobs right now in the pacific ocean and there's no country either because most of these blobs most of the plastic comes from asia north america south america so one of the issues that they have is no country has stepped forward and said you know we're going to go ahead and we're going to help clean up the blob so the blob is not getting cleaned up the blob is continuing to grow right now they say it's more than six hundred thousand square miles and again it's called the great pacific garbage patch is a collection of plastic it's floating trash located halfway between hawaii and california and they say it's just continuing to grow and the only way that they will ever get cleaned up is if a country like the united states steps forward and says you know what we're going to go out there and we're going to start cleaning up the block it's one point eight trillion pieces of plastic and it weighs eight thousand tons and here's the problem plastic is only been around since the nineteen fifties and the concern is they know that the blob is going to disintegrate over time you takes four hundred years while they don't know at this particular plastic because it's all generations of plastic so the real concern is as this degrades and as the sun cooks it what is this blob gonna do to marine life and they say it's there's a lotta dot org out there like ocean cleanup foundation that are concerned in doing studies and trying to help clean up the blah but until a country steps forward this is going to continue to grow ron what say.
