"Welcome memo lights to another round of the book views. My name is karna. I'm here to bring you the book reviews to help you. Transcend beyond your mere mortality. This is the end of the book month in today. I have for you my final book. It is the goads book of fish by richard flanagan. This book was published in two thousand and one so a bit more recently. And it's about four hundred fifty pages. In length it tells the tale of william buelow gold. Who was an english convict transported to. Tasmania also known as van demons. Land at the time and who becomes enamored with fishes. It's narrated by the aforementioned billy gold. Although the first chapter is a sort of discovery of this book of fishes and then a recreation of the book of fishes so sort of book within a book type tribe. We've seen this multiple times before. It starts off with billy gold in england and then making some decisions as being an artist and he has almost forced into the autistic type of world before. Doing some silly things gets transported into. Ben demons land. Tasmania and then more silly. Things occur and essentially sentenced to convict. Life says torches as imprisoning says beatings. All of these bad things happening to him. He tries to make his own life better through his autistic shoots and his entangled with some other characters in the book as such as the surgeon. Who is the one who gets them. Started on this book of fish this fascination of fishes and then towards the end of the novel he escapes. His confines. Goes on a journey gets recaptured. And then as almost put to death before being transformed into a fish of all things. Most of the action takes place on sarah's island which is an actual penal colony which is an actual jail where they would send convicts to do hard work and actually became a shipbuilding place as well. The island itself is tiny couple hundred meters in length and less that in with as well and the era it was set in the eighteen. Twenty s to the eighteen thirties. I believe so. This is when some technologies would just getting invented but it was still really berbar in sort of world a very brutal hosh

Bobbie Rosenfeld: The Olympian Who Could Do Everything

"Are not an ideal outfit for running now. They might sound unfamiliar to our ears today. But these puffed up pantaloons once grace the bottom halves and cavs of plenty of young women in the early nineteen. Hundreds there called pup tent bloomers because as pants. They're so big that they kinda look like those pup tents that soldiers would cover themselves in while sleeping underneath the stars even if you don't think they look like pup tents and i'll be the first to admit that they don't exactly in the nineteen ninety s. We would call these things hammer pants but they probably used about as much fabric as a pup tent did they were big bill louis and could balloon with air so not good athletic. Wear for someone trying to run fast. They'd catch the wind like a sail. Nevertheless there stood young. Bobbie rosenfeld at the starting line of a foot race that she hadn't even planned on running. She was being cheered on by oliver softball teammates wearing her wind. Grabby it's pup tent. Bloomers she was at a citywide picnic plate in a softball game but knowing how fast she was on the base paths. Her teammates convinced her to enter a one hundred meter dash. That just happened to be taking place nearby. She said yes without much thought and the next thing she knew the starting pistol was fired. Twelve point one seconds later bobby crossed the finish line before anyone else seemingly out of nowhere. A man came running up to her asking questions. Like where did you come from. Who are you. Have you run in competition before. And when he asked her if she knew who she had beaten. Bobby shrugged and said no. He told her that she had beaten canadian champion. Rosa gross. Bobby thought that was pretty cool. Then he asked. Do you know how faster time was bobby again. Said no he told her. It was twelve point. One seconds. The canadian record.

"Two hundred meters and then we have to talk to manipulate their ways through the so these are very very big challenges that you face and used to actually gain access with a sub compact that record to be con get access to the actual place this actually burning and then the other big factory ease the wind the wind is strong which owns a stopping reasons are very very little you can see like within five minutes a big section can be wiped out second twenty eighteen we did our biggest fight experiment basically we burnt down twenty full scale informal settlement two innings in a single taste and what Dr Richard Boles from Stellenbosch university has been studying settlement fires he showed me the video of an experiment when he actually built models of shacks and set fire to them yeah we said one two four and basically in about five minutes between from four homes to twenty homes fully involved in the file this footage is speeded up but I can see after five minutes pretty much all the homes are now fully ablaze at about fifteen to twenty minutes the experiment was done all twenty homes that collapsed what's it for one I think yeah I mean incredible I mean with saying that seventy minutes now on the on the type and everything's gotten really I mean that value to give you time to call the five okay to get your possessions out yeah so fast so why do we see so many files like this breaking out their number of issues firstly it the fact that you've got bad wiring and settlements you have overloaded plaques you have people cooking on paraffin stoves you've got kids playing dnia paraffin says who then will knock it off you have Austin a taxi with a lot of different factors that increase the chance of ignition and then once they is a fire the fact that you've got high density of homes run homes right on top of each other with lots of combustible material no real files so once you have ignition and it spreads very very rapidly sent a formal house one who may be affected an informal settlement it's just a question of is a three five ten fifty a hundred or thousand homes in small offices in the center of Cape Town as a young company called limb Connie who's been looking at this problem can we send any of these alarms off to see what they sound like the other thing everybody yeah right that's the sound of the alarm that's pretty passing you and I was I went off yes it may just be a fire alarm but it's one that's been designed especially for informal settlements like Messi Ross what the to see is one of the company's founders he started designing low cost five detectives when he was an engineering student and he took one of his first models to a settlement to see what they thought we ran a little alarm in the hole in the in the community and one of the community to said well my name is Khan here that so that's really not going to work and I think that both the real Spock I need to know just as much about my neighbors files and you know about my own which is really different to like normal formal homes because to some extent you case less when somebody's when your neighbors homes on fire but in full settlement with homes of this far apart it really matters and so we finally got this idea that we will need to focus on how can we create a community wide alert to the challenge of five and you say you've been through various designs and now at the stage where we've got the one you go on your hands what makes that far different first of all it senses for the red arise of temperature in a home as opposed to smoke and then when it triggers a salon it'll ring inside that first home and then within twenty seconds all the neighboring homes within sixty meters warring with that hello so the whole community knows this is a fight starts then we will send text messages out to every single homeowner in the area so that even if people are at work or other or else with bill knows he is the finest arsenic and she respond that homeowner will actually get that message saying is a fire inside your home please contact your family name is make sure that you know what's going on there how would he found that this is change the way the community behaves has it changed the way the community pace when a fire breaks out you really creating a communal response to five you creating that meet that reality with a naval respond your neighbors neighbors neighbor as far away as sixty meters can know about the fire and everybody can come together to assist people use bucket brigades with water people use and such interesting tactics actually even people will break down homes around where a fire starts to create a firebreak and so we have so many of these stories which shows that combination of early warning and letting people know who either on day or on directly seeing that fi can really make a huge difference in people be able to be more effective in dealing with the five I'm Connie of now distributed forty thousand alarms to settlements like Messi almost all the given away free with the help of corporate and NGO partners they working and is this in your lap he's my son his name is gone now how.

"They've got hundred meter long Pons with cultures of Santa bacteria that are then intended to be sprayed on sand dunes. I reached out to a couple of people on that Chinese team to ask. Them about this work. But none of them responded to my emails, but this team claims to have had huge success with this method of spraying bacteria onto sand dunes too hard in them and keep them in place of. Of. You know, the scale multiple hack dares, which is bigger than anyone else's achieve. It does seem like they've got some secrets that some of us some bus don't have this could mean that spraying bacteria onto encroaching deserts might really work. But when you think about scaling any of these methods up to the size of say, the Sahara or the Gobi it gets tricky when you think strongly about what's going to be the scaled up for of dispersal crossing desert. What's flowing is that area versus is a some kind of tractor implement is people walking around with buckets across dispersing with their hands. These are all open questions if you're going to drop stuff from an airplane. You have to figure out how to make sure it survives the fall. You don't wanna to totally disintegrated after falling from heights. So if you were going to say drop from an airplane. He might want it in some kind of some. Pellet or something that's gonna fall apart through time. But it's gonna make it all the way to the ground. Plus, if you're gonna fly a bunch of basically dirt around it's going to be really expensive. We're going cross on soil, and so it was happy. So this is something that's going to be flown around at great cost in airplanes. We might look into somehow making it lighter, for example, replacing some of the mineral Sula with a lighter material, maybe something organic if that might work, maybe these bio crust pellets can catch a ride on the airplanes that were using spray sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere to cool the planet.

"In the hundred meters event since nineteen eighty. Meanwhile, the I AA just like the court asked they go back to the drawing board and they commissioned their own study. And last summer it was published. What they did was analyzed blood samples from a couple of thousand athletes at the twenty seven and twenty thirteen world championships. And what they were looking for was to see if the women with high testosterone outperformed the women with low testosterone. And what they found is that if you are female runner who runs the four hundred meter the eight hundred meter the four hundred hurdles or the mile you are conferred an advantage with high testosterone levels in only those events in only those events. Oh, and there's also a throwing event in one other. Having high testosterone levels conferred an advantage of like one point eight percent to four and a half percent faster or like two percent to four percent roughly and just to say like if you're a runner one percent could be like two tenths of a second one tenth of a second. Which is which is often how races are decided. Right. And these these these distances are the higher distances. My right. These distances of the middle distance middle distances. Yeah. To the sprint not not the sprints and not the long with their study finds is that the sprints do not you do not get an advantage from testosterone the long distance no advantage from testosterone. These middle distance races seemingly an advantage from testosterone. And a throwing event would hammer throw what a mess. So you're saying to me like we started with like the nude parade. And now where we end up with like the line that we've chosen to draw is. In these middle distance races. That's where we're going to make a big deal about trying to separate out the sexes. And yes, it feels it feels like everyone's just arguing over change at this point. Even since that study was published the data has been called into question, and there's a call for retraction and they've published. There's a bunch of data errors the author still stand behind the study. And in fact, I w f is now using it as the basis for a new testosterone rule, they introduced this past April. We reached down to the I AA f a few times didn't hear back. But I mean right now, we're arguing about testosterone. But I think that the bigger issue here is that we're like coming into a moment as society where we're more and more open to gender fluidity. But if we've all agreed on a whole. That that that it's unfair to group women with men in sports than we do have to answer a real question, which is how do I keep the dichotomy the binary and athletics while the rest of the world is changing interesting, and what you see with duty or any of these female athletes is they're sort of caught at the place where these two worlds meet those images, which is a hard place to find yourself. It's a blend brocade nickel Kinsey, which. Duty told me when this whole thing blew up. She was only eighteen years old was up with the Potala. I was at this age when boys and girls are falling through. And there was a guy who hard for me. And I fell for him to. We used to talk a lot on the phone and thought that one day when we got older we'd get married. In mason. But when the news in two thousand fourteen started appearing everywhere the game. He started asking me who I was for real. Our? He said if you're a boy, then how can the two of us both boys stay together in the future. How will our dreams of having children are creating a family ever come true at any medical? Eventually I did tell him that the results confirmed that I had hyper androgynous him. And I asked him are you going to love me, and Mary me or not. Nicoting? He's a name map. Oh, no. I don't love you anymore. And I can't marry you because my family doesn't approve of our relationship kick if he'd have. So I said fine. So he forgot me. And I forgot him too. Right after that guy left me there haven't been any other guys that like me anymore. But now a lot of girls have started liking and a lot of them say that they want to settle down with me. How do you feel about that? Desolate abgal. Because. I guess I feel happy and set. My childhood dreams of having a husband creating a family with him might not come true. But when I see all these girls still attracted to me often wonder if I could make a home with a girl Leanne Ballard eastern medicine in India, only, boys and girls, get married girls, don't marry curls. If it was more acceptable to marry a girl in India. Do you think you'd want to do that? Did they stay? But omitting the nations nation's right now, I haven't thought about it, and I'm focusing on my sports career. But after I'm done with my career. I am going to need someone to spend my life with right now a big deal. We'll see if there is any guy that likes me, I would marry him and settled down. "London to Uruguay in the end. But it did that we don't get that far because we're going to come to a tragedy in June, just two months out. But let's let's identify what you're fishing for this isn't the white whale. This isn't Moby, Dick. It is something. However, the describes to my mind, Johnny source pursuit. They're called Patagonian toothfish. We know them now as Chilean sea bass when they're served and Matt assures me that you pay extra price for them. But the what you described Matt is an undersea monster what with an overbites an extremely aggressive fish, and it can weigh up to one hundred kilos. And so what we're looking at fishing deep is that that's the important thing. You have to put your lines down, very deep. Eight hundred meters. Sometimes I'm a little bit worried. John for this call the fish that we're gonna put them off to your listeners who you put me off a give people a chance, you you. You poetically said now this'll cruise missiles with a with a toothy grin and we're talking about a predator, right? This each other everything impressive predators. Two meters of muscle and torpedo shaped with a Big Mac full of teeth and just still for seven bursts of speed just to to grab a squid or a smaller toothfish or any other small animals more than that goes to close and you want to catch one hundred tons of these. Yes, of course, and we're gonna and the way you do that is you put a line over that sinks, very low because it turns out Patagonian toothfish have a sweet. Tooth for sardines. They can't they can't resist is that it. The ODA the oil that makes Saudi so famous and flavors drifts across. And I would fish so Bhutia fishing master chosen Saudis, and we were pushing fourteen thousand books lately fourteen thousand Saudis into the water every day. There are two kinds of lines. There's the big line that goes down, and sinks, and then attached to that or fishing lines. And what I what I don't understand does some individual put a sardine on every one of those fifteen thousand hooks as the line goes down. Every day and ensembles that could be happening twice a day. Crave. Isn't a fifteen thousand hooks with what and one and a human being is putting it on by hand. There's no machine to do this. So you have a lot of labor on board. That spends a lot of time doing repetitive work is that correct? We had a team of local Lakers, and they would collect came on. And they would meet me coil the line, the broke and each nylon.

"It's like almost a solid percentage are these like spiny thorny vines that just kinda run all over south East Asia in their remarkable in of themselves because it can get two hundred meters long. Some kind blowing size for like this spiny vine. I can only imagine 'cause they harvest newsra town and furniture. Second only magic. When there harvesting these ridiculously long vines it blows their mind as well. Yeah. I mean, when you think of just like stem, that's that's more stem than Redwood or just surprise area volume very differently. That's a long straw. So from that split you start you see the Niba pop up pretty early on in Niba like this man grow bomb that has these kind of floaty seeds like coconuts, but they're smaller in kind of geometric shape and actually learned yesterday that Hawaii is wanting to ban these clone sitter considered noxious weeds, and you know, it's flipping through the list of proposed species not expecting to see a palm tree on there. Because they're not, you know, they can be a little invasive, but noxious we. Lead is a bit strong. But sure enough Niba one of the oldest poems on record is in that grouping because it will completely take over natural native mangroves in certain areas. And so that was you know, I learned something new every day with this. So it's amazing about Niba just being a nuisance. But I suppose it truly would be in outside the habitat. But it's interesting to think of you know, this very old plant that's been around for so long. You know, it's indicative of Wyatt's been around for so long as just a Grosso prolifically, and then a little bit further down after you have the Neipp branches the big split. So again, going back to disabled lameta thing of see coconut date in you can point to that. And say, okay, these are palm trees, right and people be like, yes course, and then you point to fan palm. And you're like well this upon tree to all. Sudden people remember fan palms. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Call those palms. But you know, they're different in some way. And so I guess it makes my job easier with getting people excited about Palm's is that everyone pretty much has at gateway where they like, you know, it's an aesthetic thing and their common in tropical areas. A lot of people in temporaries will kind of like try their best to grow them or grow the ones that are successful there. So people have this idea, and then you can just kind of tease them by being like what what about this one about? Then you can feel it in their mind. You know, you can feel those areas opening up like, wow, this is this is much bigger picture than I thought. And that's exactly the experience. I had as well. I haven't been in this realm for long at all, you know, it's probably stretches back seven years or so right? From like, the first time I ever got excited about Palm's all up until now, and I've only been doing it profession. For under two years. So that's the thing. I'm still in that wave L my gosh. This is so diverse. Incredible. I loved to share that with people because I, you know, with certain people, I see that same light bulbs light up. They're like your telling me all this is related in any show him a picture of your highness dish mantra, which was his big diamond shaped leaf in there. I can hook people if you give me half an hour. So this big split, basically can be summed up as Indu picket redo flick. It leaves Indu Pikit basically means that the via the fold of each leaflet is pointing upwards, and if you think about that it's kinda designed to trap water and bring it in because it creates the channel. But then you look at this other branch, which is the feather shaped leaves a lot of our redo kit. So they have their triangle pointing the other way, and you can kind of see him deflecting water, which doesn't make sense I but anything about how much it rains in rainforest like, okay? Well, you can see why you'd wanna deflect some of that water. And it's interesting because in duplicate leaves to a lot of people just means the fan palms. So all the found palms are categorized under this in duplicate umbrella. But then you have the genus Phoenix, which is the date palm..

"Taking risks on the downhills became kind of story. I've been telling you people of intone. Everybody listened watching telling you don't get up George. I'm looking at you. He's is froth at the mouth. I've been telling you, something's going to happen with this supertuck everybody's doing it. I know we're having fun on Instagram, tried it on my mountain bike. It's it is a bad idea. It's a bad unsurprised. I didn't see somebody doing rag Bri yesterday. I would have just quit the sport forever out of stayed there and not come home. But Phillips, you'll bear going down the portait asp a which we talked about two days ago has a long history in the sport along history in our, you know, Georgian is career with the death of Fabio Casartelli in literally almost as very same spot. I immediately thought of that. It leaves bear goes straight over the railing, the stone real. We don't. We don't really necessarily agree. He was doing the power to other supertuck or whatever you call it. Because if you look at hundred meters before he crashed, he's in, he was not in the tunnel. Okay. Well, hundred one. He was by pull up the video show you. This you gotta be is I don't think that crash had anything to do with everything to do with it. Look at look at his line. He took. He took a super inside line. Couldn't react in time was much sharper Ben than he had exp. And we're talking about one of the best bike Landers in the world. Third week of the tour de France, you're trying to get away. Make make your point. When are you gonna make win? Is that he was not in the Super Bowl? He wasn't. I agree. However, the super talk, I do agree that it is in has been proven to be much faster. I got it. If you want me to pull it up, please, what am I pointing at. That's not. That's not it best to. When I make my point while you're sitting there stumbling for your data and evidence. He was in the tot just before. It is that much faster. He got going that much faster that he, he didn't crash in the super talk. But without again, I guess I am riffing little. If you're just going that much faster leading into a dangerous corner like that, then you overcooked the corner. You're not Sassari spending your time. You're nuts. You're not set up for the corner came. Look, I, I agree with these person home should not be doing a super.
