Data Engineering With Jean-Yves Stephan

"Welcome to the show. Thank you so much jeffrey. It's great to be here. Yeah it's great to have you. We've done numerous shows about spark. And i'd like to start off by just talking about the applications of spark in twenty twenty one especially in light of of other perhaps competing environments such as a data warehouse infrastructure. Tell me about the applications of spark today and how it fits into the overall ecosystem. Yeah that's a great question. So i think barak has a central place as a general framework for big data distributed computing main use cases. Are the engineering you know. Ut l. also spark streaming and then also as a general purpose tool for advanced an idex data science and for business intelligence. So you did. The most common billers in terms of volume definitely did engineering work lows. Etl steel you know batch et l. Still number one use case and in terms of you know how it evolves versus new technologies or data warehouses well using spark in the cloud over an object store using which we call d. league is still very popular. I think if you need the flexibility over programming language since you can use python scala with spark it's definitely steeled the go-to tool and the fact that and maybe we'll talk about this in the future but the fact that now you can deploy spark up of keys and debts some pain points that we used to have or going away. You know. Also make it a pretty standard architecture. For big data workloads most work with the sets over one hundred gigabytes.

T-Mobile has a new 5G wireless plan

"You're obviously going to hear a lot more about five g this year as the major wireless carriers continue to make those networks available to more consumers among them is t mobile which just revealed details on a new plan coming up. Yes indeed yet. T. mobile's announce a new magenta. Max plan which takes place of the magenta plus plan and it will cost about the same that that plan had which was about fifty four dollars per line a month for three line plan but for a limited time you can sign up for a three line plan. That is about forty seven dollars per line per month that includes all taxes fees when you use auto pay now a single line under the magenta mex plan costs eighty dollars but each additional added brings down the overall auto pay costs forty seven dollars under the current promotion and this plan is also available for small businesses can cover up the twelve employees. Now why would you wanna do this. If you already have a plan or on another carrier t mobile says its new unlimited five g and four g premium data plan. That data will not be slowed. No matter how much data you use. Now why would you wanna do that. If you already have a plan or on another carrier t mobile says its new unlimited five g and four g premium data will not be slowed. No matter how much data you use under this new plant competing unlimited plans may temporarily slow data after certain milestones reached. Now with this new plan. You also get more hotspot data forty gigabytes up from twenty gigabytes of the current plan. You get the stream. Four k video and previously hd and several other features including free scam blocking and caller. Id new customers who do not have a five g phone can trade in the current phone and get a new five g. Won t mobile's twenty four month interest. Free plan t will also let customers on other plans bring their five g phone over and pay off up to six hundred and fifty dollars of existing payments for that phone without any switching costs. So can i just say if i hear another service that uses the word plus max to describe itself. I'm probably gonna pull what's left of my hair out. I feel like every single service of late is a plus max. There have to be other words but anyway so we're seeing five g roll out. Obviously how good is it right now. So bread is still far from being available everywhere. Here in northern. Virginia i get five g connectivity on on the verizon iphone have and also on the samsung t mobile phone i use but around the us t mobile currently covers more than two hundred and eighty million americans with its five g network but just more than one hundred million with the super fast speeds that get you to the three hundred gigabytes per second range now in comparison with traditional phones. Use four g lt. You're lucky to get fifty megabits per second. Now t mobile said it plans to reach two hundred million this year with the super fast speeds in recent tests run by open signal from for the month of january t mobile users connected to five g. Almost one third of the time thirty percent eighteen five g users connected eighteen percent of the time and verizon connected nine point five percent now. These are all improvements for the month of january according open signal. What's tests five g around the country. The good news is that typically t. mobile's actions lead to movement by the competition so all consumers might be seen better deals and kind of in the days ahead. I'll

More PS5 and Xbox Series X game consoles coming to retailers

"To design so when i first saw the xbox series x and playstation five i tended to prefer the xbox series x simpler design but the longer that the playstation five sits in my living room the more i do tend to like it too in terms of the ports so on the front. We got the usb anc with two more super speed usb ports on the back and then we got the standard admi out which supports up to eight cave variable refresh rink also on the back. There's an ethnic poor and the playstation five also supports wifi bluetooth. Five point one and the brick. Ac adaptor is gone and has been replaced with a simple power record. The goes straight into the wall so that is the outside of the console. Check out the inside and its capabilities. So this is a fast console you know it's up to the standard of desktop. Pc's on launch and there's a custom eight hundred and twenty-five gigabyte ssd paired with amd's into cpu with sixteen gigabyte of gdp are six memory. Menial games are going to run superfast status as the is slightly smaller than the one terabyte drive found within the playstation for pro. And i imagine the hard drive space is going to be a problem. This generation with games. Judy nearing two hundred gigabyte. So so the cpu and ram do have a significant impact on loading times for games. And you're going to notice this immediately. With new games as well as improvements to out games fast travel in games is snappy and we really get a notice this feature in new game. Such as ratchet and clank. We can load into new worlds in a second previous gen games. Like ghost of tsushima lasts for to read it to and destiny to. I've seen significant improvements in loading times and this could have a massive impact on the game design itself so at the moment when things load we see till tips and game hints plus sometimes replaced him winding corridors crawlspaces to help load environments fundamentally. We're going to see some changes but we don't really get a glimpse of the opportunities at the moment because many games have been released across different generations as most likely going to be into twenty twenty two before we see dedicated next generation games designed with all the nepean five features in mind racing is going to be a big deal. This generation so this is a rendering process that creates realistic lighting effects by tracking the way that light mos and reflects in the environment to right tracing offers. The potential for real time global illumination meaning. Textures and detail looked better than they ever have done before. And that includes water reflections materials and features on a person like skin and hair.

Dear Tim Cook, what I want to see on next iPhone, 2020

"Listeners every year as we approached the introduction of new iphones, I always read a letter to the CEO of Apple Tim Cook and let them know what new features I would love to see. So let's keep the tradition alive. I would like to read aloud my new letter to Tim Cook Tim. As the CEO of apple for the past several years as you know, I've been writing you with a wishlist of new features that wanted to see on the new iphones. Now sometimes, you agreed with me like in two thousand, Sixteen when I requested water resists an iphones and other times past like in two thousand eighteen when I begged for a wide selfie mode to get more people into the shot like Samsung. Offered on some phones. So we know that the new iphone this year, we'll have extra power and faster processing and five G. Connectivity but let's go over a few of the other things that I would love to see beginning with talkie tech listeners know this face ID has gotta go. It never worked well to begin with but in the Co Videira, even with your software fix attempts the iphone just can't recognize me. I'm wearing a mask. Now, I'm thrilled to see the touch ID which for my money always worked way better anyway is returning on a new. IPAD set for release this month it'll have touch ID built in the power button and that's great. I also love how the new Samsung Galaxy S. models and the new one plus models have fingerprint sensors directly on the screen itself. I'd be happy with either as long as I can start drastically cutting down on the number of times a day I have to type that dreaded passcode into the phone other considerations. It's time to retire sixty four gigabytes of storage come on you sell a device takes amazing higher resolution photos and videos and access to a world of data hogging APPs in an ever-growing operating system. I could feel sixty four gigabytes, which is the entry point for most iphone storage capacity in a matter of weeks. I mean my phone I have nearly three hundred gigabytes full of photos, videos and APPs take away the visuals and APPs alone Ke- account for eighty nine kicks and that's way more than any entry level iphone could handle. So apple doesn't offer expandable storage. Why competitors so that share some of the apple wealth and this year match competitors with one hundred, twenty, eight gigabytes, minimum storage or better yet showed little covid eric kindness and give everybody two, hundred, fifty, six, another request always on display the new series six Apple Watch finally fixed what I always thought was a fatal flaw. Every time you looked at the screen was dark until you shook it back to life now you can read the watch face anytime and it makes a huge difference. Let's apply the same technology to an iphone that's always dark when you reach for it, check the time whether and appointments elsewhere on the wishlist. All Day battery I've been saying that for years screen, they won't crack really improved optics like a real telephoto Zoom Lens not the portrait Lens you have on their a real telephoto. Zoom

Everything We Learned from Mark Cerny’s PlayStation 5 Deep Dive

"Cerny held a fifty ish minute discussion about the tech behind the PS five. There were no games. Shown they did not show the box or the controller or released price. Any of the biggest stuff that we're waiting for but we did see a couple of major things including some of the tech behind quickly. Go through some of that even though it's a lot of numbers I don't quite fully understand but we have a lot of resources on June to help you understand it So they confirmed that be. Gps AMD RADIAN OUR DNA to based graphics engine are retracing acceleration and it has variable frequency up to two point twenty three Gigahertz With ten point three teraflops and we'll get to the big tariff op discussion and a little bit It has GD are six sixteen bytes memory four hundred forty gigabytes of bandwidth per second A solid state drive with eight hundred twenty five gigabytes and five point five gigabytes per second read bandwidth raw It will support. Ps Five Game. Discs that are ultra hd blu-ray up to one hundred gigabyte disks and the audio and it will be the tempest three d audio tech so there was a lot in addition to all of those terminologies and discussion of some of the parts. That are being involved in that fifty minute talk and I think we'll break down the biggest points but what was everyone's overall impression of this discussion. I guess I'll start because this is weird and we can't really judge who's GonNa talk fast. I came home with like I thought that it was Off this is great I thought that it was a I mean. It was very very dry presentation from Sony and I think that that was to be expected considering it was already like it was always going to be at GDP star. It was a very like I tweeted out. It was a very cut and dry. Gdp presentation it was very much flow develop. His it was for It was kind of like A. Here's how easy it is to develop. Organised system is how easy. It's going to be to develop on this. That was the one the major message from a consumer side. I thought that the history stuff like even though we already knew a lot about the say well we knew that it was going to heaven as saying that you know as a capable of that really excited me the basically the facts that they said that they had to like in some games he can to slow it down because it's actually too fast is amazing. I'm also really interested in what your side of things the Three d audio. I love the idea that it can be so impressive that it sounds like it's coming from the real world Those I noticed that he really broadly he went into really specific. Ticks off but for for my mind as a consumer and not not in video game developer. Those are the things that stood out. Yeah I'm with you on that. I think it was interesting. That like we. We've been saying teraflops. Oh year and Mark Cerny made it sound like that's not really the best way to compare power Just putting teraflops against each other Ps five loses to xbox series Ex It has lasted them. But it's making up for it in other departments. I think it's like we're also seeing specs from both sides would which is essentially what they would look like overclock Specifically like the five. It's like this is how this will operate at Max capacity and I don't know how often that's actually going to be used the three audio things really interesting 'cause aid. They mentioned something about sort of like digging into it. It was like the capability of sending photos of your ears to Sony so they can get a better understanding of how exactly to cater sound specifically to them and it reminded me of a couple years ago at IGA and we had to get. I have B.'s. fitted and this woman came in and filled our ears with wax and like a hose and basically created this thing that fits perfectly inside of our ear so that went out cruisers yelling at us on a real show if we ever have a video game convention again or anything like that like the good old days Will be able I. It will fit perfectly. It won't be falling out. I've I've done live shows much where this thing's falling out of my ear like the idea of having a custom custom audio and accustom headphone or something like that can interface properly with the PS. Five outside of the customization of controller your hardware. Nothing like that is really interesting. It's the kind of stuff that I don't ever think about when I think about the next generational leaps. It's something that far smarter. People have to come up with his. Mo is just like Games Graphics Loading Times frame rate and for something like this. It's like Oh this is very clearly a next step. This is something new. This is something interesting. And it's it's it's really awesome and it's funny. You say just right there I wanna point out and then Max will get to you He you said you know when I think about the next year and I think games graphics and we don't normally say games graphics sound even though sound can be important in sound at least on the seventy five things in the specially insurnace talk one of the things. He's most interested in. Is I think elevating sound the discussion around sound in games to the level. We talk about visuals and whether or not that happens. Of course we'll see where it goes but Max. How did you feel about talk over all before we Dick Downs? Don't any kind of screwed up by not properly framing this as the GD talk they were going to have for game developers people to chat or credit back going. I think obviously this is not for us. This is not for presses now for consumers this is not for fans this is. This is something that was made for people specifically who make video games and know how they're made in how you utilize technology to bring your dreams to life and whatnot I think it's really surprising that they didn't they didn't try to sort of like. Just disclose that sooner you know because it most people don't know what GDP is they're just like. Hey here's that big playstation five reveal. You've been waiting for. I was Kinda shocked that we didn't get like they didn't have any anything that had a little sizzle to it like. We didn't have like a big. You know like even just a cool motion graphic of like. Hey here's the new controller. Here's what the box looks like right now all we have is the logo reveal from from CBS and then a whole bunch of stuff from our external who was awesome like brilliant and we should listen to him obviously but like from a marketing standpoint? This feels like pretty much like putting the cart before the horse and it felt like something. Kinda slip through the cracks. You know yeah the the timing on all of it is bizarre because we are. We are starving for news on this thing and this is not exactly what the mass market in general populace has looking for. It made me think about like how like ghost ghostbusters. Like the Egon movie. You know it's like thanks to starve of ghostbusters. Like Egan's awesome. He's integral you need him there. But if he was talking for eighty percent of the film people wouldn't remember it as fondly it. This is like we want. We want all we have is like the dumbest thing in the world. Which is the logo and the smartest thing in the world? Which has this presentation and I need something in the middle. That sort of just like this is how this applies like in English on. You know like this is the part where the you're holding the controller this is. This is what the box looks like. We've seen so much from the series x already. And we're still really in the dark with a lot of stuff on playstation. I agree I think that they should have been a consumer-friendly bridge between the logo. Reveal end in a deep dive on the specs like I am pleased we got the deep diving was fix. I'm pleased that we were invited to be part of that. Jd Talk that we probably wouldn't have seen otherwise would have sought out on the volt but yeah they're definitely needed to be a bridge. Because I think that the the wording around this was clear enough consumers. A lot of people did think that they were gonNA get a big. Ps Five reveal. And that's not what

"Again. Dan what was I doing. Well you know it was on holiday and I was also looking around crazy tech gadgets. Let me tell you all about it on on today's episode of talking. He's a really interesting experience. I mean they are giant eight stories nine stories ten stories full of toys and cameras and TV's and oddities a lot of oddities so let's talk about the oddities. Particularly when I looked up in found out that comcast offers five hundred gigabytes of storage. So there there is eight times the storage on the DVR enough room to amass so much programming. You could start your own cable channel or even streaming channel. Think about that now as shopping and Japan is quite a chore. "One of the rope reports sufficiently called the playstation five and it is coming holiday twenty twenty go this is I'm so excited to be here on this day justice shit shit on the energy in the in the in the building just are you how many ps fives are you going to buy all my seven Oh man and you never know how many I like to have backups all right I like somebody works just in case something goes down this is Sony's own Jim Ryan over at the playstation blog but I'm gonNA jump into a wired report in the middle of it 'cause I'm crazy so since we originally unveiled our next generation console on April we know that there's been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future of Games we'll bring today I'm proud to share that our next generation console we'll be called playstation five and we'll be watching in time for holiday twenty twenty these updates may not be a huge surprise but we won confirm them for our playstation fans as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation wired magazine covered these updates and more in stories that posted this morning I really appreciate that they wanted to give us the released date and you're like you know this is what it is here we're not gonNA do a huge event or whatever they tell you yeah I wanna get into that because this has been rollout of it hasn't been traditional playstation slash video games however Jim in this blog post is going to go into the details of his more and what he's talking about there bullet points from the wired article though or this again talking about that solid state drive that it'll be running on explaining how that actually works and while faster get rid of low times Mark Cerny does a great job yeah way too smart to have anything to do video games mark stern is one of those rare people that when I read the quote from him I read it I can hear him saying yeah me too yeah got a very distinct voice of Personnel physical games for the playstation five will use one hundred gigabyte optical discs inserted into an optical drive that doubles as a four K. Blu ray player they started talking about how the UI playstation four is pretty stagnated doesn't feel alive they started saying they're gonNa be more of that meaning Cerny goes into Code here multi-player Games servers will provide the call and so with the set of joint -able activities in real time single player Games will provide information like what missions you could do in what words you might receive completing them and all of those choices we visible in the U. I as a player you just jump right into whatever you like end quote cool they were talking about here like right now I'd see Kevin playing borderline ends I'd say Bruce Playing God of war but I would still be to actually know what was going on I have to join the games to see what was going to watch more of a here it'll be able from a glance be able to do it and understand if I wanted join right in that's actually a a lot of PC launchers do that right now sorry no bet like we put the bit aside for a little while if you look at Fortnight Gamer Apex game whatever it will how many people are left it'll tell you how many minutes are in the game as right now playstation it will do that of like yeah good point four thirty three left but it won't tell you like it's a specific and you're talking very specifically I think as like across the board God this will be the standard this is what it looked like controllers are going to be there earlier than the dual shock four but tha but lighter than an xbox controller with batteries in it this is because because of how they're moving away from the dual shock and using haptic feedback but we'll get to that in a second that's one of Jim's won't things then this right from the wired article while a number of studios already had their playstation five kits the controller prototypes began rolling out much more recently in no one is ready the name specific titles they're developing for playstation five here we got everybody your light listen up for this one we're working on a big one right now says Marco Thrush isn't a blue point games which most recently worked on last year's playstation four remake of classes. I'll let you figure out the rest so it's got to be said of the clauses no way they're doing it again but like not not on the remake but I'm saying like a sequel do that's what he said a big one a big one eight now you figure out what do you think it is I don't hold on let's get through all this information here this buffet playstation news before we start ain't GonNa part like Savages Hotel California right stab it with their steely nice but they just can't kill the beast I was thinking about Hotel California this morning four more this is back to Jim the playstation blog refers to something I'm quite excited about a preview of the next controller that will ship with the playstation five one of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games and we had the opportunity with our new controller to re imagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion to that end there are two key innovations with the playstation fives new controller I we're adopting haptic feedback to replace the rumble technology founding controllers since the fifth generation of consoles you truly feel a broader range of feedback so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much more much different than making tackle on the football field you can even the sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plotting through mud the second innovation is something we call adaptive trick triggers which have been corporate added into the trigger buttons L. to slash our two developers can program the resistance of the triggers that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and Arrow or accelerating an offroad vehicle doc you're terrain in combination with the haptic this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller and we can't wait to see what their imagination goes with the where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal so was I write about the happenings in the switch correct St Rumble and all that jazz that's that's kind of what I thought so I assume that now the controller will have that feel of Ajoy Con if you're playing the switch share Yadda I think it's going to be more precision more stuff again wired article of when the reporter gets down there he got to try different thought and he talks about like going through mud in feeling sensations resistance of sand walking through that that's great yeah no really is more immersion like that it's cool and I think it's what they need to go for right I think games are at such an interesting point where you remember growing up and it would be like any S to snes snes to MCC for right huge jump in our into this thing where don't get me wrong playstation for looks better than ps three but it's not night and day Oh my Ashtray playstation five and four K. and all this other jazz in what eight K. and whatever it's going to be facing when we do it it's going to be these incremental upgrades but if they're doing it across the board on everything that's exciting being mark Cerny talked about ray tracing and said it will be hardware accelerated not so that was such a appreciate nerdy drills sounds like I'm not going to get into but correct yeah I'm glad he said it because I know a lot of people complain about we'll know it's has to be hardware can't be software so anyways mark knows what to do that right at the upright that's where he's like

In the map you can watch the live stream and then you get notification when something happens but if you're not that instantaneously the video stream carries on it doesn't save any history so with kid it will record it will look out for a overdue more intelligent motion detection so you can see and distinguish between like people and pets and cars and then send you directly for allies individual things plus it will actually save those snapshots of video guy back and look by layer so if you're at work and then something happens but you don't get to me to leave leave when you go home you can go back and watch the video because they've saved on your. I kinda kent basically and you can see exactly what happened. During the day and these features the things that if you have polity home security cameras they challenge you subscriptions just to do that right to do recording and so now apple is offering their own this bundled it into the story of his and so if you're on the two ninety nine stories today which is the to the two hundred gigabyte one you couldn't have recording on one camera and if you're on terabyte plan you get recording and after five cameras essentially and the actual processing of the video footage to to to do the detection happens locally on either side like an t._v. or or you know when the ipads for that purpose and restored end to end encrypted so it's stored on the server and you can access your devices but apple could access if they wanted to write something to look forward to you and then even now there are subtle things like in the whole map. You'll have things like new way more options for signing icons we discussed this last week <hes> <hes> but but it makes a big difference and personalizing everything in the home and making it more glance and reflective of what your home looks like <hes> and they've also got stuff yeah although automation stuff that's something i i i think you're more experienced and what you can do with short kites and then home kit kind of mixing worlds. Now what's easy possible coming with that. Yes oh just like obviously right now. You can do to nations in home but they they only alternate and control your home kit devices right because you got into this tab that says what will nation you you choose when someone leaves or you choose the day of the trigger and then it lets you activate scenes or change accessories are sentenced days and the last change to that was the ability to automate based on local sunset and sunrise because there was like the first level of automation in the first year and then there was finally adding using sunset and sunrise is locally at if you have a home hub as a trigger which is great and there's been nothing since then until this yeah and so imagine those triggers is that now they can say fire shortcuts as in order like most of the capabilities that you can do inside shortcuts you could do as hunky the trick is and they run on your home hubs knowing your phone so you can be away from the house with your devices and shook still run so even something as simple as like you you can have it when a doorbell is pressed make it play choon rights to say if you've got a bluetooth doorbell that's next to him and you have speakers in another room in your house and you want so that when this when the dope house press eight to actually play a sound on the speaker will encourage get those nations wouldn't let you do that because because there'd be no short for making the speaker do something making a light to or do light change color but you can talk up to any external system right whereas now you're getting most of the power of the shortcuts.

"I would donate money to them hand over fist, as much as I could to support this. But I think we are going to see the more deployed forming takes place. The more people are moving towards these platforms and a tipping point is coming, not for Google. Google has other other issues tied into the spy apparatus. Oh, it's, that's their whole origin, that's kind of hard to, to remove them. But if I tell you that you go to Google dot com slash purchases. You should try this, John. Google. I did. Okay. And what did you see? I got five purchases that weren't made by me. I don't know. Who did them? I never got charged for them. One purchase by me, and the rest nothing. I have the same. I actually have a bogus purchases someone that not even. You know, I did not get bogus. It's actually my account Gula Cup. Here's what I have a mine. One hundred gigabytes of Google every month. I purchased a surface doc which I didn't buy through. I bought it from the Windows Store, Microsoft store, something from my hearing aids and really I only had one legitimate. It's none of these things I purchased through Google banned the way they do it. When I the one that they showed up for me was from Amazon, but it was only one thing and by, like probably twenty things a month from Amazon for the last since two thousand would ever at least ten years, and there was just one. So I'm not I'm not freaked out about this, because like it doesn't work, and the reason why is squirrel, male? Google collects. These purchase this purchase information by going through your g mail and pulling out receipts. It doesn't have access the squirrel, male. But that's but so whoever thinks this is a good idea and that they're only doing it with receipts. You need to check your fair, pal. Did Google knows grew Google knows Google knows in one of these. Hey, buddy? This kind of interesting. One of your wife wants to see this Email yours. One step away. I love that Email mailing. I love the Email. I hacked your webcam. I saw you were doing watching that porn semi a bit could. And I'm going to release the Nubia. I haven't I get one of those. One the other day Tina got one the other. Yeah. I'm like, yeah. Let's see the video. But there's lots of things that are backfiring and just to wrap this up. The internet is not these companies legislating them as long as they're legislating, these companies I don't care what they do. Do whatever you want. I completely unimportant to what we're doing. And well, depending on how five G is rolled out. You're going to be okay. Not using these services, which brings me to five G. Very interesting T mobile. You know they are still waiting for regulatory approval to purchase sprint. And the reason they are they want to purchase sprinters for their towers, mainly, but John Leger did a did a video which I won't bore you with. But it was the T mobile commitment, and the t mobile commitment is to rolling if you know, hey, if you approve this for us, if you prove this merger we commit to rolling out five G broadband rural areas at cetera, etc. Etc. And they publish the documentation, which I was very interested in that just so you know what they're really talking about doesn't seem a spectacular as the promises that are being made in the media now eighteen as a little different story. But for T mobile, they promised they will blanket up to ninety percent of the. Country's population with mid band spectrum and a one hundred percent of the country's population with low band spectrum five G which will result in Americans receiving speeds in excess of one hundred megabits per second within three years of closing within six years of mergers closed, the applicants commit to deploy five G network with low ban coverage of at least ninety nine percent of the population mid band ninety percent. With speeds. Between four hundred and fifty megahertz and. And one point five gigahertz. But that will really only you said. Yeah. Would Would I sell? I sell four and fifty megabits per second and make it hurt? That's because I'm reading the document. And that's the interesting part. Commit says that no, I was reading ahead multi also rule split as a whole bunch of things going on to what I was interested in is what frequencies they're going to use. It's one and an I understand the five G protocol, much better now won't get to that in a second. But the actual transmitters that t- mobilised talking about less worried about than what AT and T is talking about because they're talking about mid band, which is in the five to six gigahertz range, which is your wifi. This is where the problem comes into play. There's a whole lot of people using this. They call it the unlicensed spectrum that these phone companies now, want to start using and because of the protocol of, how they can slice frequencies, and basically use the same frequency, as, for example, your wifi, but it wouldn't interfere with each other. Yeah. Right. Why fly itself has a number of channels? So you can't do that. But, you know, we were talking a lot more. The five G protocol, is really splitting this up, much more than wifi. And what is it two point three so, but everyone's now fighting over this because the smart meters going to run into trouble smart. Meters are on these frequencies, which is not, which we're not against. We don't like these smart meters at all. There's, you know, weather forecasting sensors is all kinds of issues that come down to this to these frequencies. But what I found interesting is that in, in the open document, the t mobile published they they've redacted the frequency, that they're going to be on. They say mid band, so I can only assume it's going to be between five and six gigahertz, but everywhere. Sorry if you're thinking of the real band, with the potential, which includes terahertz way it's gotta be there. Yeah, it's the mid band could be five hundred. You don't it would mitt band, is that when you keep reading, mid just keep hearing that doesn't mean anything. Well, I'll tell you let me, let me read you the sentence with redacted. Five G Sates, sites nationwide, average of that's the band with the, the ban an average of redacted megahertz of low band, and mid band five G spectrum. So they're not even telling us how wide the spectrum is that they're going to use. But everywhere you go down further. It is..

"Hugh, yet, again, this is the latest model GPO coming out of the turn line of video cards, and it is a pure beast so much so that the titan artifacts is nicknamed. The t Rex it offers five hundred seventy six Trang tensor cores, which basically translates two hundred and thirty teraflops performance. It has twenty four gigabytes of DDR six ram, and I'm going to hold off our second here. Remember when graphic cards had megabytes of ram. We have twenty four gigabytes of DDR six ram. Just go to wicks dot com. That's W I X dot com and create your professional website today. Jefferson Graham, USA the weekend edition of talking tech. Where today's headline is the California wildfire wakeup call backup scan and save now. And as you know, California was rocked this week with terrible massive fires in northern and southern California. And if you're sitting around the home this weekend, why not take a moment in make sure that you don't lose everything. In a disaster is pretty easy to do. Just take a few minutes in finally get around to digitizing your important stuff. Your passport, your license. Your driver's license. Your home deed, your wedding album, your wedding, license, your kids artwork from school. You name it. There are ways to save all that stuff. And you can either take a picture of it with your phone or you could use your camera to take better picture of it or you could take all your old pictures, and send them into be scanned lead. Let's look at the possibilities. First thing you want to do is take pictures of your papers, the easiest and cheapest way is to use your camera app. Sust nap photos of documents and photos, you could start with your camera app on your smartphone. If you want a little higher quality use the Google photo scan app. It's free. It uses software to compensate for scratches in glares in the photo. Now, that's taking pictures with your phone now, what about all the analog photos? Well, scan my photos dot com. I members dot com and others will scan shoe boxes worth of photos and digitize them if you're uncomfortable sticking your analog photos into a Mailer and shipping them out. Visit your local FedEx office location and ask for the Sony imitation machine. You can scan around one hundred photos onto a CD around five bucks. But you'll have to stand there and do each photo. One by one the bulk scanners are lot easier a lot quicker, and of course, a lot more expensive skin. My photos is one hundred and forty five dollars to scan ten thousand photos, which maybe more than any of us have. Okay. So now, we've got the picture scan. Now, what do we do hard-drive that is the cheapest and easiest option the problem with the traditional drive is that they will eventually fail. But a good alternative is the newer solid state drive, which has no moving parts, you can get a five hundred gig drive around one hundred bucks. I is one hundred dollars four four terabyte model that would be four thousand gigs. You could also use a USB drive. Those obviously do not have as much storage. But I think there are a little bit more reliable because they don't have any moving parts either. You can pick up a two hundred and fifty six gigabyte drive around fifty bucks. Now, the best and most reliable backup would be online backup. Google dropbox. Microsoft's one drive in Apple's I cloud or the most popular tools for packing backing up. Our stuff. Apple is only for photos videos. The others can include papers and other documents. The rates are all over the map. You're looking at two dollars monthly for one hundred gigabytes with Google where around one hundred dollars yearly for one to two terabytes from the main players either way, I hope you get busy in start digitizing. I've tried peer to peer internet nuts done. Extremely spotty. Satellite is just terrible with their data caps and stuff they use that. So heavily advertised on TV. You've probably seen the ads. The good news is that throughout twenty nineteen the pictures going to get a lot better. Because of a new wireless technology that all the cell phone carriers are going to offer that will give rural areas coverage for the first time at a slower speed than what urban areas get, but it will still be much faster and better than anything that people in so much of rural areas in the United States have today. So I have no good answers for you right now for internet connection other than how much do, you know, how much data your family it typically uses in a month? "So the processing power is there but debatable to edit on the fly. Starting my desktop take was me and my ipad and keep going on my phone. I think there's something there for the onto gold influence her entrepreneur in to kind of get away from that computer because the sides editing. I don't need my laptop to do this. Oh high. But other than that, I, I don't. You know, I, I don't use it for for that much more than just web stuff. Yeah, for the ten dollar individual plan gets you premier rush hundred gigabytes of cloud storage. Adobe fonts, adobe portfolio and adobe spark. That's it. So if you need anything else besides that, you're going to have to be paying a lot. And that was what I wanted to look that up. Because if you're paying a hundred twenty dollars a year and you get a bunch of a Dobie stuff in involved, like, you know, maybe some access to Photoshop and stuff like that, then maybe it's worth it. I'm not sure if fonts portfolio and spark are enough to justify, but maybe an especially if you if like you, Sarah, if you're spending thirty bucks a month in, you're like, I'm not sure I need all of that this. This could be a great option. The last thing I want to say there's craters I've talked to who use premier who find it and they use it for years. They look like it, but they find it awfully buggy because they can. You know, they can just keep pushing updates. There was one update happened a few months ago. My friend said that. Save like it was. It was a book that permitted you from saving what one of the cornerstones things of of of editing software so that that's the one hesitation I have. What adobe products is. I hope you know, even I, I ran into a problem today with a baby buggy side. I'm hoping there's some stability naked, make it worth it for you paint s restriction for each month and it's an ongoing conversation about subscription software, but it is the way it is the way I'll everything is going now and buying something for download and use without paying for it. An ongoing basis is becoming the rarity. It's becoming the thing companies do to keep their base happy, but if you wanna make sure you've got bugs squashed fast, you're always up to date and secure. You wanna be updating all the time anyway. So if you pay a little, you're not only just updating all the time, but you're also getting new features as they come along. So I don't know, it's it's just a new way of doing things. I guess. Good enough, was them? Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. I will definitely be giving at least rush aid, a spin. Talk about it on our show at a later date. Hey, thanks..

"That's unfair because no other store or retailer has access that data, like sort of like exponentially growing network effects or data effects, pre create and preserve a monopoly. Can you apply that to the smart home right now? Absolutely. Not because it's still just a giant mess. Right? Like you, you cannot credibly, say like buying a home. A bunch of stuff from one vendor gives you a radically better experience the not. Right? Like right, if everything is still pretty messy, that's why I'm saying the smart plug is the most important product because they are solving that mess by you can either by our stuff if we offer it or if you make the stuff you should definitely make sure it works with our stuff and so they, they're solving that problem with a huge flex of like work with Amazon stuff and making it super easy to do for you know, Rando manufacturer twenty-seven right or twenty thousand. Actually, that's how many they've got. So I'm just going to say some words, and then I'm gonna sit back and let Neil is head explode. "That's kind of what we're frame is it's kind of what what an emo is in visions all games like that because the technology will allow it and dan i'm wondering what you think about that concept i mean that seems like something that would take quite a while to really get right because when you think about it like the area of one game is built for that game's mechanics in mind so let's say like an assassin's creed or far cry if you know in the base level game with one historical time line or when a area is there and then at some point they develop a new area and everything what if they want to introduce a new mechanic like a grappling hook or a wing suit or something like that and if you're able to go back into these old areas and everything will that will those areas be broken with these new i think it would just bring up a lot of questions that developers who have to keep in mind like do you basically bar the use of newer mechanics that were introducing in later areas in the older ones to get around that a flying mounts in wow right flying nuns came along a couple expansions later and then they had to sort of retrofit put you ceilings on things in roofs on that didn't have them before yeah yeah i guess i mean it sounds like it would be something that big studios i think would have much better time at doing than like small studio because there a lot of looking at old areas and things that you would have to do but if they can pull it off i mean that sounds like a cool idea christian what do you think of this idea of of things just sort of continuing to the the games as service approach to everything rather than just games that are service this is the cheap answer i love it when it works in it frustrates me beyond all end when it when it doesn't right like sometimes it's really fun to see the graphical leap between uncharted three and uncharted four and while i don't wanna splinter your user base imagine what a new how could be if it got to start from zero or like imagine we're all we all want the new bethesda engine right we all want the new sky rim engine or the new fallout engine and so it was just continuing to build on this same game you run into those engine problems or historically for about developers talking about that so so i feel like there has to at some point there probably is alive when you move onto the next thing but for game like war frame that continues to build involve so nicely it's really cool or fortnight the way you know they're telling this story involving their map and it's not the static release that's out but it also isn't fundamentally changing the gameplay lupu why people come to the game i think that's really cool but i agree with dan i think that publishers need to think through it very carefully before implementing something like this i could see it being attractive to defecate here we're going to do that and then you get into it and you're like oh crap this really hard to do well while echo berry in the in the chat here says require steaming excuse me requires streaming tech i think otherwise asset download for all possible games yeah that'd be like oh it's a four hundred gigabyte download but i mean i my frame of reference on this is constantly world of warcraft right because a that's what they do they stream you install a colonel and then they streamed the game as needed but also there's something really wonderful about what while has done recently like the most recent expansion before the one that's coming on august they sort of reinvigorated old content they had quests these cool artifact quests where you had to go back to original areas in the very first vanilla part of the of the world and do newquest that they populated in those areas and i can imagine that being really cool in an assassin's creed like you have to get in the animus in go back to you know the renaissance which you did in whatever sesame that was i think there's a it'd be a neat way of bridging those games in populating old bits with new bits.

"Don't tell expires redeem it then i get annoyed every two years to expire i know two hundred gigs until like every ace's phone you get has one so into the end of my current used to be able to stack them i had a few alone could start up to like two to three but yet night some of them are still stackable like i had my one terabyte from the chromebook pixel two thousand fifteen up until just this last month of the month before stacked with one hundred gigabyte from another chromebook so some of the different promos do stack the basic chromebook promote doesn't yes then with the ones on phones they don't stack of tried it on those alternate google accounts just to see and yeah even if you have one redeemed it doesn't work yeah i just i really want google drive to figure out how to make a windows client so it'd be nice lennox clients like it's google i mean there's nobody nobody is lakes it's okay you're wait wait you with your did i say limit x years year of lennox it's this time it's gonna happen note but so look the backup instinct klein on does is real bad and it's one of the primary reasons that i use use dropbox instead because it is i still use backup in sync and it's got all sorts of issues that had the problem with synchronizing certain motion photos up until just a couple months ago where just wouldn't and they'd be stuck you wouldn't have any file sick down they just hang and it still does this weird thing where like flickers your desktop every couple of hours just like refreshes the whole thing and it's kind of stick.

"You know sixteen gigs of of soda memory right yeah you've got to add storage of some kind you know you wanted him dot to dry for this probably is there is no two and a half inch now we're doing two sata okay let's himself and you can run one of each or you could wait until prior these reviewers they had a they had sixteen games a dr for thirty two one hundred memory yeah and they had a hundred and eighteen gig optin drive at a five hundred gigabyte until five forty five s saturday society kind of going with the they had the os on the driver of course of course and then they were having like just had the satis available for i put games on it naturally sure another word do also do pcie right both do either yeah and you can you can kind of get a sense of scale of the device itself when you look at the usb ports right was it heavy was it it it's pretty dense sitting on a desk it's not like i mean but i'm just curious part of intel's spiel about this at the day was you can kind of like if you need to you can bring it so if you were using this for productivity stuff at work per chance and you needed to bring it home as opposed to desktop you could throw it in a bag or if you're going to land party it'd be pretty decent option for that so like it's not heavy it's not small.

"So peer colin confronts or talks to somebody as someone who works for when apple authorized dealership in a little tiny reptilian character and i don't know why started that but i'll continue with it asks in apple's man it's a story as old as genesis we have a two thousand ten macbook pro here and i'm customer probably i replaced i did myself i replaced the ssd i replaced the drive with an ssd five hundred gigabyte sst i increase memory to eight gigabytes and i did myself so whatever the cost of those parts were you know wasn't anything very expensive for computer the cost what a couple of grand or so when i bought it you're kind of an outlier because a lot of people are not comfortable cracking open their device no matter how easy it might be no matter how many walk throughs are online that's just beyond the comfort level of most consumers and this is the point that apple makes about well you know why you'd gotten so specialized with these parts why why is it impossible for me to prepare my own guarany more their answer to that is because the vast majority of our customers never open anything never replace anything so it's not really important to our customers to be able to upgrade their stuff and e you know somebody's always raising your hand going well it's important to meet we'll okay but you are a drop in the bucket compared to the other millions of people buying these things anyway.

"Buoyed uh if if i you know clear a fairly ducts and get out of this problem what are you suggest going forward as a better alternative well i i recommend sinology nasice sy and oh log why but you'd be in the same boat if you don't have a backup so that's people think well it's on a backup drive it's backed up no it's only a backup if you have two or more copies of it right you have the original and what's on the w d then you have a backup but if the w dis where you're putting everything in it's not backed up you don't have a backup so no matter what you do there are better nast solutions this i mean i understand why you to this great this is convenient use a big nest just like that and everything's backed up to it but one of the things i do as i make sure it's backed up as well so that's fairly important if you don't have mall really ideally you have more than two copies of everything uh the way the way i do it i have a a documents folders several terabytes of stuff that i i should several hundred gigabytes not even that big of stuff that i have to have i bet a tear by the photos and that the photos i have just duplicative to an ass is a sinology nastase was this western digital would have been fine but it's duplicated sinology nasr but i don't delete the originals the originals are on another drive and then that backed up to another drafts of multiple copies and always one of them should be offsite so i have all my photos here as well same thing with that special two hundred gigabyte documents folder it's on this computer here it's on the nast at home it's on several computers at home it's backed up everywhere that c a yo or use carbonite our sponsor that's the only way you're not gonna lose something is if you have multiple copies and one of them should be offsite the other thing from now on yuma.

"Chopping would you take energy they require calories in what we've done is we've transferred all of our our work as it were to a digital now the work is not us we are not the productive entities and that's a that's a huge c change if we think that's actually going to happen well uh but i mean it's really does matter where the work comes from what the worked is as long as we all agree on the value and the units and so forth that is the site where i think is that really valuable and i don't think were there yet because if all we did all day was trade bitcoin stout air blockchain's arab ethereal gms or whatever over the market the market determines what real world value is that too is the are those 10000 thousand bitcoin's worth to pizzas or are they worth two houses the the market this is the problem is wise really all right road at some point you'd think the market would set a lot of value will there's dozens of different markets that's the problem here it stats aimed at oid there's like twenty different beano cryptocurrencies that are all going up and down in value because people are arbitraging them uh and whenever there's money involved there will be people who want to steal the money and there will be people who want to arbitrage the value between one and the other in so i mean this as it coin think of this as all a out of town try outs for some system that is ultimately going to replace our current financial system we're learning in ain't now what works what does it work well you know what i two hundred gigabyte ledger that's not gonna work it may not shooting he's the financial system now in might also replace could and chilling or i identity iggy no eight there's all sorts of interesting applications beyond financial system so don't challenges of court letter a golam government authentication right is that the fun.

"And i with this to terabytes in cloud i started thinking oh maybe i should actually try to store stuff in i cloud because it will be able to dynamically like remove it if it needs the stirring storage space so i could store to terabytes worth even though i've got a five hundred gigabyte st on my amac i could store a couple of terabytes of data and it wouldn't be a problem because it would all be dynamic and that's i don't think the way apple approaches it really works for me but i'm starting to think about it just because this is apple hit keeps iterating with its cloud stuff and making it more reliable and making a more competitive and you know i don't i think it's i think it's to be taken seriously i i'm not saying they're leapt ahead of everybody but i am saying that i feel like apple has been doing the right thing with their cloud stuff for a little while now and it's it's really showing there is native screen recording coming to iowa saliva move and you quote controls into action yeah i saw that you can add the little record button talk about an esoteric feature that nobody would expect i mean i think the original iphone osu couldn't even take screen shots right because who would want that except for journalists and it turns out everybody who writes a who can't for the tweet and rights it in notes and takes a screen shot of it and then tweets the screen shot it's actually this big thing and there's a screen shut interface now where you can immediately tap on after you take a screen shot in crop it and share it like right there so at apple is embracing the fact that people want to do screen captures of maybe of games they're playing or who knows what else and they wanna take screen shots and and it's cool yeah it'll do it'll do it in record audio and i actually starting to wonder if and i haven't tried this because it's a beta and nothing works right yet but i wonder somebody asked me and i had already thought of it could you do a screen recording of a skied call.
