My mother will attest to this are is at school. And they were serving trifle and the gentleman who was serving it In gave me a dollop of this trifle. And i said i do. Hope this sherry in it sir. My mother always put sherry in the costed. Seventy one like sasa i one bird's-eye custard a trifle custard. And then i never remember this but capris did instant mashed potato now. I know that was an advert where there were basically robots doing the smash potato And they were making this robert sip-it like cement mashed potato and that was something that we ate in the as well instant mashed potato and then you had the delicious caramel banana flavored angel. Delight is basically for americans pudding and it's a powder mixed it with milk stirred it up. And then i think. Let it in the fridge for a little bit. And you have the most delicious pudding the caramel or or salted caramel whatever. It was and the banana flavor. Were out of this world. Runway Rodents, Flipping Snakes, and other Foreign Object Damage!
"Okay we're gonna start off with one crash that is seems to be in the news Quite a bit lately was a tragedy. It was a seven thirty seven not a seven thirty seven. Max thank you very much Journalists take note. Don't mention seven. Thirty seven max in the same article as this crash please. Because this airplane was a seven. Thirty seven dash five to four registration. Papa kilo charleena. Charlie at fluids first flight on the thirteenth may nineteen ninety-four being delivered to continental airlines. And then how do you pronounce this airlines three swaggie. A- that's pretty good. That's about as we gye sweet swiss regime. Oh i think Our translator staff will be able to tell us exactly. that's this'll be the official pronunciation. Go ahead stuff. This is the language that i unfortunately do not speak. No sorry. I cannot help okay. Well we're going to say this indonesian giant. I like i like mine the best. What do you think okay sounds. Good jeff always okay. Liz was gone with. She's voted for me Took over the aircraft. May of twenty twelve Let's see on the only instance that this airframe has had were bird strikes in nineteen ninety. Four two thousand four two thousand five In march of twenty twenty at the start of the pandemic was parked at soraya for storage in november of last year the aircraft was inspected for an extension of its aircraft operating certificate aoc To december twenty twenty one and a few weeks later it passed inspection. As part of the airline's return to service procedures the boeing seven thirty-seven resume service on the nineteenth of december twenty twenty with his first passenger flight on the twenty second. Now you fast forward to january ninth ninth. Yeah january ninth of so. Let me find the actual narrative here a Seven thirty seven five hundred flight. One eighty two from jakarta to pontianak indonesia with fifty six passengers and six crew had been cleared declined to flight level. Two nine zero was climbing through about ten thousand eight hundred feet. Mfl out of jakarta about eleven nautical miles north of jakarta's Soekarno hatta international airport was over jobs. See when radar and radio contact was lost with the aircraft. The aircraft has so far not turned up anywhere else. Okay this is the original reporting. Of course they did find the wreckage debris And body parts were located in waters of about fifteen meters depth near lung kong island no survivors so we have a few updates here. They did find the flight. Data recorder and it has been successfully downloaded and all three hundred and thirty parameters are recorded recorded are in good condition and currently being analyzed. They also found the just recently. I think on the fifteenth found the vr But they are still looking for the memory unit of the assembly so So far not good with the cockpit voice recorder recovery. Unless there's been recent news that i didn't see i did check this this morning though So yeah. I kind of interesting They don't really have any other. Data will of course the flight data recorder data that. We hasn't been released yet. So i would imagine that maybe the investigators have some idea of what happened to the airplane but we don't know anything about it yet except that it crashed system where i i saw a little bit of Flight right on twenty four all made it looked like it was on a relatively straight climb out that it began a unexpected turn and then it sort of compared to spiral downwards on so. Yeah the dwell nba. There is another. There's another one that we're going to talk about a citation Jet citation five over oregon. That did that but this one was flying a heading. That was not The assigned heading. I think they gave him a zero seven five heading but it continued to the northwest. And that's when they first realized that there was something going on with The flight. I may be confusing. The two don't worry amount me. Okay was that i'm sorry i guess. Was that heading zero five. Some they requested or or something that was assigned atc. I think that that was something that was. I think that was assigned by abc. And i don't think it was a part of the departure procedure. I think they gave them that vector. I think i'm remembering that correctly But yeah it It didn't Fly that heading. I guess that was or maybe it was supposed to fly that general heading and they noticed the controllers noticed that they were not that we're continuing To the north west
Traveling To Snowdonia
"Let's start with a peak at the natural appeal of the largest national park. In wales snowdonia the highest peak and wales in fact the highest peak in england and wales is called snowden sits in the heart of the snowdonia region and in one of britain's first national parks these welsh islands offer outdoor adventures gorgeous backdrop and draw countless tourists each year. Well skied martin. The land of its is here to help us make the most of our time in snowdonia martin. Thanks for being here. Thank you for having me there. So i've been to your home. Snowden is right in the backyard you grew up there in northern wales snowden in snowdonia national park mean to you. It's a place. I tend to walk quite a lot. It's just a huge and beautiful area. When i say huge. It's massive eight hundred and twenty seven square miles but you don't see that many people in it feels massive because it's it's windy it stark. It's pristine yeah. Small road not allowed to crowds. How tall is mount snowden. It's the massive height of three thousand six hundred fifty feet above sea level at its peak but because it rises more or less out of the sea. Yeah it has the aspect of bigness about it. It's so interesting because here on the west coast of the united states. Three thousand five hundred feet. It's like this is sort of a medium mountain pass for britain. That's a big peak. That's you know. Ben davis is the highest one in britain and there are few mountains over four thousand of the snowdonia national park. You have all of wales peaks over three thousand feet high and on. I think there's only one pecan english over three thousand okay. And this is the north of wales in. I've traveled on wheels. A fair bid. I just if you got limited time. I would recommend north. The peaks only Less than four thousand feet but didn't The british Climbers have mount everest. Actually practice in the snowden area. They practiced in that. Nobody had ever used oxygen on a mountain before. And so they had a stroll round be had Two systems an open and closed. And they thought oh. The closed system is much better. But what they didn't realize goes onto everest the vows and clo- system froze so the luckily they had a couple of open systems with them but they had some rugged enough areas in north wales where thought they could have some practice there. And you do get to some mountain. they're not resorts alert. Sort of hiking centers or something there. There's some beautiful towns. There's town called. Beth goulart galaxy. Guess who described beth killer it's a mountainous area and therefore towns villages. They nestle in the valleys. They don't sit on tops of hills and bathe galax which means ballots grave is useful in a little bowl with rivers running through it stone building. Oh everything is built on. Everything is built stone bridges over the babbling drone bridges and of course slate roofs because wales used to be the slate production center of the world at one time that right so when we think about going to north wales as a visitor and we want to do some hikes. What advice would you give for enjoying the nature of snowden national park and bringing up some calories at the same time you can hike all levels. Mt snowden itself with acid in welsh is an attraction. And there's a railway that runs up if you don't wanna walk for three hours just take the train and this is kind of a cute little tourist steam train. Yeah it goes from some berries up to the top and that's a family out it is. It gets crowded. Some of what i was going to say is that snowden is like a magnet people have heard people know that so that eight hundred and twenty seven square. Miles will get away from snowden. You'll see fewer and fewer and people which is a lovely thing. It is very empty area. It is and if you wanted to have some rugged memory you could hike it without the steam train. Take what five hours or so three hundred. Well five hours up and down if you if you know. It's a nice day. It's a lovely day. Beware say this flat up. Beware of times of year like easter when it's considerably cooler the top dress. Well okay
Mastering the Go-Around with Rob Mark
"Tell people just kind of from the high level view what is go around and one. The some of the reasons that pilots might have to go arounds. Go around is a situation in which sure the aircraft is on final somewhere planning to land. You may be stabilized. You may not be when we talk about stabilized. We mean someone. That's not a thousand feet in the air half mile off the end of the runway diving to make the numbers. That's not stabilized. But that somehow the pilot realizes that this landing is not gonna turn out the way i wanted it to. I may the way it's going. I may land way further down the runway that i planned and you got to go back and do this again. And you push the power in a adjust the flaps to with a climb flaps. And you go around and you do it again. But that transition from getting the airplane setup for landing often you have full flaps landing flaps in to getting it to pitch up and climb and add the power and not bring the nose up so steeply that the plane stalls. That's quite an awful lot of work. As is the part up here with us. Transitioning your mind from. I'm gonna land to god. I'm not going to land. I've got to go around so again. Usually pilots see it early on but sometimes they don't and you know go around really needs to happen early enough so that there's not chaos in the cockpit and go around of course don't have to be initiated by the pilot. Atc might tell you to go around and for example. Sometimes when i'm landing at my home airport here in palo alto with people that i'm working with. Clients who are in the left seat will be spaced out nicely and then suddenly. Atc will put an aircraft on the runway at almost always. I clients at that point. Be prepared we might have to do a go around because often the spacing is so tight that that aircraft may not get off in time. So i think a lot of go round situations can be anticipated and certainly as you talked about stable approaches. That's really the core to a good landing. We had a see. If i'm meeting it at my flying club where they had analysed all the past incidents and they said that fully eighty percent of all those incidents could have been avoided by timely. Go around well. I think you just mentioned another really interesting point about you. Telling the person in the other seat heard that. Atc call you know that means we might be ready for go around here what you want what we as instructors want is we want the the student or the person the left seat to say You know what that sounds like. We better be prepared for a go route. You don't want them to depend on you to tell them that we want to see them. Recognize it and be prepared with a possible action somewhere along the line. We'll we'll talk a minute about some of the mechanics of doing go arounds. But i i that we might talk about stabilized approaches. And i've got something here which i've just brought up. Let's talk through this. These are the criteria that cirrus has in their flight operations manual for what constitutes a stabilized approach. And i think a lot of pilots have some vague general idea of what stabilized approaches. But they're actually a lot of different criteria to it so let. Let's talk through some of these. I think it's it's very interesting that we look and you see Six criteria for this stabilized approach and the one being airspeed. I flew with a student last year. Who was absolutely certain before he would start it. He knew how to fly because even playing with the flight sim for years. And we got on the down wind. And i said okay. Don't you start the turn to base now when you think it is it is necessary and we got opposite the numbers and he just crank this airplane around into about up forty degree bank and kind of the knows that what okay. This is going to be interesting. When of course we ended up really high and really fast and i had to tell him to go around and later on. We'll be debriefed. I said what was that about. He said. I don't know that always worked in flights him. I could always make it work and flights out and is too young but let's get in the right mindset. This is not flight sim. And and of course the reason the proper airspeed is so important is because you're landing criteria. Well i'll have this thing down and stopped in about twelve hundred feet. Or whatever is based on crossing the end of the runway at the proper airspeed. If you're ten knots high depending on the airplane you can extend that landing distance quite a bit in pilots might say sorry. Our port has a five thousand foot runway but you may not always operate from five thousand foot runway. And what happens when you're not on a five thousand foot runway on a day when it's starting to drizzle and the runways a little wet and you touchdown long past way past where you think you should and you try to get on the brakes to stop and the airplane might give you a little surprise on the ground so proper speed is absolutely a good place to begin and i usually tell fox. Try and keep it within a few knots. I mean i'd like to see them at the target reference speed. You know plus or minus a couple of knots and that's really important because our airfield is very short. And if you're in nuts fast you better be going around especially if your landing in the high-performance aircraft like the cirrus. Let's see a couple others here so correct flightpath. So essentially we've got gotta be a lined up on the center of the the runway and we've got to be essentially on the glide slope or the glide path so if it's an instrument approach where on the glide slope if were flying visually then were on the vase e or the pappy or whatever visual guidance we have but what. Tell us about some of the others here. Well i think being on the glide path is is a good one because so many airports the as have an old vase ozzy or a pappy or light or something which is a series of red and white lights to give you a visual. Clo- that you're on target to touchdown in the touchdown zone and if if you find that you're turning final close in and you're seeing nothing but white lights you're in trouble and then because your way high and if you happen to also be fast trust me you are not going to get down in the touchdown zone and as we talked about earlier you may land way past the touchdown point. You think so. The goal of all this is to get you to look and see a consistent place we want to see. The pilot have a consistent view of the runway so that every landing looks pretty much the same when they have the same airspeed and the same flap setting. And we know that they're confident that they're gonna touchdown in the first. Say the first third of the runway. Because if they're not and they're looking at that going anytime something in your brain says. I think this is gonna work. We'll probably be okay when your brain starts spitting out words like that even if it's not verbally it's time to go around and do it again. You don't get points off for reform messing it up the first couple of times. The real secret is to realize it's not right and we'll go back and fix it.
Strong winds fuel wildfire in Southern California
"Southern california. Millions are under a red flag warnings. Tonight a forecast for more high winds keeping the fire. Home Buyer Tips For December
"A december first when we're talking about sales records. We're talking about what we sold. During the month of november previous year at this time period so During the month of november twenty nineteen we sold a total of three hundred fifty one houses. Compare that to six hundred thirty three this year so sales again once again our way up compared to twenty nineteen most expensive house this month. So for one point seven million in headingley and in fact during the month of november we sold ten houses at a million dollars or more. So let's go into in a little bit more detail again. December i twenty twenty last year. At this time we had fourteen hundred and twenty houses available this month. We have seven hundred fifty. Four virtually has many houses on the market as there was last year but sales are almost twice as much. So you can see. This is not a sustainable situation buyers far outpaced the listings. Seven hundred and fifty four is down a little bit from the previous month yet when we had nine hundred fifty five houses breaking it down across price ranges entry level houses under two hundred fifty thousand last year. We had four hundred ten district. We've got two hundred twenty seven eight range to fifty to five hundred thousand last year. We had nearly seven hundred on the market right now. We have three hundred six and luxury homes. Three hundred fifty one last year december first today. Two hundred twenty. One incidentally starting in january twenty twenty one. I'll be doing something a little different. I will be giving a separate luxury housing market report. That's all houses over. Five hundred thousand in manitoba got the luxury home marketing institute classifies anything over five hundred thousand as a luxury home. So i'll be delving a little deeper into the details in this price range. Okay now let's take a closer look at the sold numbers during the month of november entry level. Last year we sold one hundred five this year. Hundred and forty two mid range prowse's last year. During the month of november. We sold two hundred eight this year. Three hundred and fourteen and even luxury homes last year result. Thirty eight this month. The during november we sold seventy seven. That's basically twice as many as year. Same time so we can see that the number of available listings are about half and sales are about double. How do we put that on paper. Does it look in graph form. That's when we come up with a to called days of inventory. This basically explains it. There are no more listings. Come into market today at the current pace of sale. How long would it take us to sell everything. That's out there here. The lower the number the hotter the market entry level houses under two hundred fifty thousand last year. It would have taken us one hundred seventeen days to sell everything that's out there. This month is just forty. Eight days super hot. But it's even hotter in the mid range prices two hundred and fifty to five hundred thousand dollars. There was a house by the way last week. A twelve hundred foot bungalow in river heights listed at four hundred was four hundred thirty thousand sold for five hundred thousand dollars. This is a seventy year old house. It's been redone done up to the nines. Look really great but a half million dollar price tag so in that price range. Last year we had one hundred days of inventory this month. Twenty nine so in other words if nobody else listed their house in that price range going forward it wouldn't even take us a month to run out of everything that's out there and now luxury homes there too much hotter market than normal last year. Two hundred seventy seven days to sell everything. That's the level of inventory this month eighty six days. That's probably the hottest that i've seen it. Not price range now. the one step

"It was an ambitious project that though it failed would become part of the iconography of a decade in september nineteen ninety one the first term residents moved in to biosphere to a three acre volume built to be an artificial materially closed ecological system biosphere one being the earth itself a texas oil billionaire. Funded it to study. How people might one day be able to manage a self sustaining ecosystem for life on mars. It proved to be a lot harder in practice than it was on paper. The oxygen levels would drop too low. The crew didn't really know how to grow crops for food. Their pollinator soon died out and the ants moved in not just any aunts crazy ants. My name's moxy and this is your brain on facts. They go marching to by two. They're the subject of to cgi movies from nineteen ninety. Eight and a picnic wouldn't be complete without them today. We're talking about ants. This topic comes to you by popular demand to social media comments an email. That's a new record. So thanks to rachel. A prodigious and kate from strange animals podcast. We really should think about ants more often than we do considering how many of them there are. I've often enjoyed dropping the fact that the ant population is equal to the human population by weight. But is it. The claim comes from one thousand nine hundred ninety four book journey to the ants by harvard university professor and a german biologist. They based their estimate on the estimate of a british entomologist who calculated that the number of insects alive on earth at any given moment was one million trillion. If ants make up one percent of the insect world that's ten thousand trillion according to the book individual workers weigh on average between one two five milligrams according to the species when combined all ants in the world taken together way about as much as all human beings. So if you're going to play on a seesaw with a bunch of ants you would need about a million of them on the other end to balance you out assuming you weigh sixty two kilos or about one hundred and thirty seven pounds which i will tell you. I don't with around thirteen thousand ant species worldwide. There comes a lot of variety. They range from smallest less than one millimeter long to over fifty millimeters or two inches. That's the aptly named titanic mira gigante so weights vary too but experts seem to agree the average weight of an ant is less than ten milligrams but even among experts. No one really knows how many aunts there are in the world. A bbc documentary claims. There are not ten trillion ants but one hundred trillion though it still suggests that the total weight of the ants equals the total weight of humans. Even by the author's own math their calculations are wrong. If we estimate that the seven point two billion humans on the planet weigh a combined three hundred and thirty two billion kilos or three hundred sixty six million tons and ten thousand trillion aunts weighing an average of four milligrams. Each we get only forty billion kilos or forty four million tonnes or about nine pounds of human for every pound of ants even if we allow for the smaller human population in one thousand nine hundred eighty four and the smaller humans. It's still back of napkin. Math at best one expert does say that the numbers might have inaccurate at one time. Probably about two hundred and fifty years ago. We must also remember that. Humans are getting fatter all the time. We're not just increasing in population we're increasing in fatness. So i think we've left the ants behind another way to try to wrap your head around. How many aunts there are is to look at the biomass of them. One of my favourite weird history and animated rant youtube channels sam annella compared the biomass of several animals and visualized them as spheres literal animal planet's for example. If all the blue whales in the world could be mushed together like plato. They'd make a spheroid about one hundred and forty meters or four hundred and fifty feet across blue. Whales are huge but there aren't very many of them. In contrast the chicken planet is more than twice that size three hundred and thirty meters or eleven hundred feet across their small. But we've read a lot of them. The math was tricky enough. What with trying to come up with a density for each animal. But sam found order of
How to Avoid Deadly Weather-Related Accidents with Rob Mark
"Today of course. We're going to talk about that via far into imc It's it's not a new Reason at all that people are hurting themselves in airplanes In fact it's been around for quite a long time. I just finished in fact writing a story for flying magazine. That'll be out. I believe next issue About via far. And i m seeing and of course we all know what happens. People fly into whether that they have no business. Being in but big question is why so. Maybe that's some of what we're going to talk about today while everything we're talking about today is certainly weather related. And the unfortunate thing about via far into imc accidents is that ninety percent of them. Fatal which makes them the most lethal of any kind of an accident. So if you're gonna have an accident don't have a fear foreign to die. mc accident. I did a study years ago where i looked at via foreign. Imc accidents over a ten year period. And i was wondering do instrument pilots also have them. The answer was yes so they have them at a somewhat lower rate and i think There were certainly times. When i was not current as an instrument pilot and so i would fly via far and you've just got to maintain those normal via far visibility cloud clearance minimums otherwise even if our pilots could find themselves Going into imc and having an accident. Well i think that when we we are training pilots Will often ask them. Okay give me. The cloud clearances for For via far won't see five hundred of below a thousand above two thousand horizontally from you got it baby but the question is does a pilot really understand what that looks like. When they're flying via far how do they. How do they tell. When they're five hundred feet below or a thousand above or two thousand feet horizontally from because most of us never really get up there in those kinds of conditions to say okay. Here's what those minimums look like. And unfortunately i think that People fly into whether and then they say oh my gosh in the first thing they do is always look down and looking down does nothing more then make the situation worse because you're in the clouds there is no down there is no up. There's no left and right An unless you're really current on instruments up you're gonna lose control of the airplane so the key is is some good risk management to make sure that you don't fly when those conditions are possible or that you give them a very very wide birth which of course we're gonna find in this accident Today this pilot did not give the weather at all yeah. I've had at least two times. That i can remember in my forty years of flying where i went to from via far into. Imc one case was at night. And boy. I was working absolutely as hard as i could to avoid. The clouds were in a metro area. Things were reasonably well lit with the surface lighting and yet we still found ourselves in a cloud. There are times when it's just virtually impossible to see the cloud no matter what you do now. A particular case. We were very close to francisco bay. So i knew that a slight turn to the right. Put me over the water. Push for a little bit pop back out of the cloud but yeah pilots set and really need to kind of anticipate win. This might happen and have a good strategy for how to avoid it now. A great strategy. Especially for people with an autopilot. Snap the autopilot on and then do a one eighty. That's true and and of course. I don't think we're going to know in this particular accident yet whether the pilot used the autopilot or not He certainly never used the the shoot in the sarah's so again we know where this was going. And i think that sometimes when we train students as well that we're not clear with them about the fact that if you do this you will not only hurt yourself. You can possibly kill yourself in anybody in the airplane along with you. I
Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport is open!
"Some happened and i cannot believe that i am about to say this. Say what is it going to be. It can't be as unbelievable as what i think. You're going to tell me. I think it might be berlin. Brandenburg airport finally open. How it finally. it's only eternity late will. What's the official number of years late. This report. I think it's a an changed almost nine years late. I think it's years late nine years late. Billions of euros over budget. The airline it was built to be a home hub for hasn't existed in three years. Air berlin is long gone into the dust of the history books of aviation and had the opening go. Let's just say that the inaugural ceremonial opening of the airport went just about as well as the construction period and previous nine years. Well no i. It went better than that. Actually i mean it has to a gun better than that. It's pointing landed in billions of euros. Evaporate it. They didn't accidentally land in new berlin wisconsin. Or something like that but no it was on brand show. He say the plan had been for parallel arrivals on the two runways for an easy jet flight and aloof tons of flight and the flight numbers were written such that. It noted that it was the thirty first of october in the year. Twenty twenty it was easyjet. Three one one zero and lufthansa twenty twenty. They were supposed to touch down at the exact same moment and ceremonially open the airport. The weather had other plans as the weather often does. There was poor weather and they had to all land on a single runway one after the other but that was fine they landed they taxied. They gonna water cannon salute. It'll look nice. Will picture that in the show notes because it does a good water. cannon salutes. always nice thing. we're met something. I know i've seen this raised before and i'm also a little confused. Why they weren't able to conduct a parallel rent landing on these two runways when they're spaced out more than a mile apart from each other. That's a question. I'd like to see if somebody can answer as why. They couldn't conduct a parallel landing. When the runways are are not all that close together it's not like newark. Sfo where running literally one hundred feet apart from each other. What happened here. What i heard from a few people. And i haven't been able to confirm this so there might be some gray area in here as the categories of the aisle system on the other runway whether or not it can support the particular conditions that they found themselves in that may have had something to do with it. But if you've got an authoritative source by all means drop us a note at podcast at if our two four dot com or if you've been in the airport i know we've got a few emails over the years that inform us on the progress of the opening of the. I know it's been a kind of a joke. Among those who follow these sorts of but i was being generous. I know that has been the laughing. Stock of the industry's air better okay. But it's open and they begin their first real operations later this week. Where were the kind of move. Everybody things like so. It happened so we have to pick something else to point
Coral reef taller than Empire State Building found off Australia
"Have discovered massive coral reef off the coast of Australia. It's about sixteen hundred feet tall taller than the Empire State Building and its base is nearly a mile wide. It was discovered in the great. Barrier. Reef, which is the world's largest coral reef system researchers say they were surprised and elated to stumble upon the massive underwater structure. It's the first discovery of its kind in one hundred and twenty years and scientists say it's a reminder that there's still so much. We don't know about the ocean now plan to study the re further to better understand its role within the oceans ecosystem.
Artist and glaciologist illustrate ice loss from glacier in Peru
"As the climate warms glaciers are melting fast over a thirty year period peruse Calcutta ice cap lost about a third of its area. To put that in perspective artists Meredith, like of Chicago worked with glaciologist Andrew Malone, he provided satellite images and data. She then Used Three D. Animation and gaming software to create a virtual world with the city of Chicago looks like it's built on top of the Calcutta Glacier. This provides viewers with a sense of scale. So they can visualize just how massive the glacier is and how much of it has been lost, and so it sort of displaces the viewer from the world that they know but keeps it enough of a familiar context so that somebody who lives in Chicago can look and say, Oh, yeah I know what that distances. into show, how much isis disappeared into able to calculate the volume of ice that has been lost and then convert that into if that much ice were to fall as snow in Chicago that it would return allegation I think of six hundred feet. In their virtual world falling snow buries the city until only tops of skyscrapers are visible. Seeing an image can really illicit an emotional reaction and I think that that's where change can come from.
The New iPhones Are Here!
"The new iphones are here the new iphones oh. Okay. I'm down. The Tuesday apple had an iphone event that it was all about the new five G. iphones that have five G. that even have horizon five G. CEO five G. Talking about five G. on the stage for about five G. minutes and then they showed all the phones and literally. I didn't count it, but there is a super cut on Youtube said the words five G. More than two dozen times over and over many times horizon five G. selling all of the benefits you're going to get from five G. None of which you're GonNa get I should point out. Even with the five G. phone because. All of the really cool stuff. You know the four gigabits download speeds. Are. Available Leila. Narrow tiny teeny weeny area in certain cities of the country maybe in one corner of Football Stadium. That's about it. It's only good outdoors don't work inside because it can't go through walls. It only goes about eight hundred feet. So you have to be within eight hundred feet of the cell tower with line of sight access. It can't be a tree between you can't be a building between your they can't be a human or even a raindrop line of sight clear vision eight, hundred feet Max away, and then you might get four g if no one else is using it. For gigabits not. Five, jeep with four gigabits that's confusing it's a marketing term. There's two kinds of five G. actually there's more, but there's two main kinds and the funny thing is that Tuesday verizon also rolled out. There what they call their quote nationwide five G.. The one you don't have to live in Fourteenth Street and race and Philadelphia to get. Outside within a hundred feet of the tower. That is the same as T. mobile's nationwide five G.. It's what we call. low band or It's a six hundred megahertz, which means could go through walls. It can travel a good distance. It's kind of like. In. It's a lot like what you got right now. Maybe a little faster may be probably not. Fact in some cases is even slower. So don't you know I I don't I think apple they must have given apple. How much money do you have to give apple to get your CEO on stage to get them to plug your stuff all the time to save verizon five, rise, five, g. all I mean apple's got more money than God there. The got hundreds of billions of dollars just sitting in the bank with nothing to do. You how much does verizon have to give apple to get all that attention a lot I guess. Maybe. The next time you're in the verizon store that'll explain the giant. By An iphone today billboard I duNNo. Apple also. They didn't use to do this stuff. They didn't. They didn't need to I. Don't think they need to today. They also kind of understated the price of the phone because the price they quoted people was with carrier subsidy. So, unless you're buying it from at and T. or verizon, no, t mobile didn't have eighteen team rising and it's Only, in the base model phones, will you get that deal? So it's not even the price of the phone, it's like when the back when they used to say, it's two hundred dollars with a two year contract. And you pay for it even after two years over, you're GONNA pay for that phone for the rest of your life. So there's four new phone. I just want to say that I want to get that off my chest Pay No attention to the hand waving about five G.. Very. FEW PEOPLE ARE GONNA if he if you're in a five G. Area Nice to have I mean imagine four gigabits. That's wow. That's fast. But. That's Very, few people listening to this can. Be a city eight, hundred feet of a tower you can't be outside it's. Kinda like Wi fi really is what it is Which makes me wonder why you know do people even care about this since most of the time when you're inside, you have wi fi. you know they they said Oh look a a an EMT in emergency Medical technician can get downloaded a a brain, scan a cat scan in the ambulance and look at it up because they have. But I don't does that is that something people are saying, Oh, I really wish I could do that. I. Need to do that. I don't know what they're gonNA do with a brain scan is there right driving you the hospital but okay, fine. Anyway, phones, there's an iphone. Twelve's by the way this is iphone twelve. There's the iphone twelve mini. Which is many it's smaller than the iphone se that they just started selling I mean it's really small. It's the size of like an iphone four. It's tight. But this is what's cool about it. If you want a small phone, it has all the features of the big boy phone. and. It's one hundred bucks cheaper. So. But. But you don't get it for the price. Probably you might s es even cheaper. So you know if you really want to save money get an se which is a perfectly good phone that has the guts have been I. Phone Eleven, and this is has the guts of an iphone twelve and its Tutsi. And it has a nice cameras and all that stuff. Then there's the iphone twelve, which is the IPHONE. that's a little bit bigger, and then there's the iphone twelve pro that's a little bit bigger still, and then there's the iphone Pro Max which is humongous. That's the one I'm going to get. I want humongous right. They didn't really explain the fact that the iphone twelve pro twelve pro Max have kind of different cameras. The only the twelve pro Max, you have to buy the humongous phone. If you want I mean they did some interesting things. They have a sensor that's fifty percent bigger. The that means a lot more light gets in and it has built in optical image stabilization. The sensor shakes when you shake That's pretty cool but that's only on the Max. I, don't think they really made that clear.
Everything we expect from Apple’s iPhone 12 event on October 13
"Apple has an event called. Comma speed. which is Well, we're pretty sure it's going to be the IPHONE twelve announcement. There are still some question marks. There will be we believe we when I say we I don't know nothing the rumor mongers some of whom seem to be pretty and right on. Believe there will be four different models of iphone announced on Tuesday four. an iphone many which, and that's its name, which is hysterical. The iphone many. will be well many small but not that small I mean, Hey, it's the twenty first century. You can't. Be. Many as smallish smaller, the smallest of the four. I can't remember it's at six point one inches I have to go look at the rumors I don't keep track of these that much 'cause. Although by this time, you know here we are a few days before the announcement. Usually they're pretty they've converged. On. A on a truth, an agreed upon truth. So I think that's probably what's going to happen. and then the all by the way all four. All four will have a five G. even though it doesn't matter because. If. You can get five G. AND IF YOU'RE ON T. Mobile, they have what they call low band five G., which is low and not any faster than Lt. They have. mid and up ultra band high band which you can almost. Anywhere, there's at and T. Five G., which is really just four G. Masquerade with little mask on saying woo boo I'm five G. and it's not fast. So there's really no you have. No believe me. This this we're talking five G. is years away like at least a year or two before it's GonNa come to you unless you're in a big city like New York City and you're within a hundred feet of who the transmitter. There's very limited five G. so don't worry about five G.. actually the mini is really small I'm sorry I going to correct myself five. Point four inches according to rumor. Munger. Mark Gherman who usually is pretty good. Pretty. Good on these. Then, they'll be a I phone. Twelve. That's just the middle one that usually the bestseller by the way although with a mini in there, we might you know. That might be kind of there might be something there. People will want because it's really. Five point seven. So tiny tiny So, let's see. Let me think. Okay, the iphone twelve. which by the way, the biggest thing is going to be colors, lots of colors, lights, colors, I haven't twelve then the twelve pro, which you'll have three cameras not to the pro Max. which will be really big. So the there's the five point four many. So confusing the iphone twelve, which is five No I'm sorry. Six point one inches, the iphone pro twelve pro, which is six point one inches and the iphone twelve pro Max, which is six point seven inches. Among I'd Inga. Anyway, they're going to announce it Tuesday. So what you know, you'll figure it out pricing. You know it's going to be expensive I think the lowest cost the iphone mini will be around seven. Hundred Bucks, but don't quote me. Five G. Four anything else to tell you now. Lead no more LCD screens s over supposedly they'll all come with. New. A fourteen ship with is like so fast. It's really fast. Maybe better battery life, which is an issue because five G. Radio's just drain the battery. Super. I guess really I should've just waited till next week we could talk about it because that's you know. The thing that we don't know is when you get these phone, so they're going to announce it Tuesday. Typically what apple would do is say you can order Friday this coming Friday. Which is what the Sixteenth Now's the thirteenth get the sixteenth and it would arrive at your doorstep the twenty-third a week after that that's typical and I think that's probably GonNa be the case with. The mini and the iphone
Travel to Singapore
"I'd like to welcome to the show Ashley Hall who is coming to us from Singapore and coming to talk to us about Singapore actually welcome to the show, Chris How's it going? You're not originally from Singapore. Accent you might have that might have picked that up. I remember Ginnie British. I've lived in a couple of different countries in Europe but I've moved single six months ago. Got In Britain in Singapore are just so alike that they islands just once unskilled. Excellent and why should someone go to Singapore? So I was just reading this morning actually apparently now it's the fifth most visited city in the world. So lots of people are interested in right now. Really. Yeah. So what's really put it at the top of people's minds especially I guess in the US is film out Crazy Rich Asian Plus filled with an Asian costs and it sentencing a ball it's really about spying author who who live here is a great book to read as well logging maybe watching the film, but it's GonNa. Love people interested about the architecture. It's a Super Morton city I fell in love with a couple of times after I visited people think of Marina Bay Sands, which is the the futuristic hotel within a became. The tau is like a Super Modin accessible way to enjoy Asia. Excellent. And what would you recommend? We do when we come to Singapore. Burst important thing to think about when he come to. Singapore, is the climate. So if I can share with you the first time I came I was visiting because my sister married a Singaporean and I wanted to come and check out the place in. The family but I think I have my expectations about how hot and sticky was GONNA be. Status because I couldn't stand it first time offense even Singapore I'm like I'm so please beginning I WANNA go back somewhat cool because it just wasn't ready for it but. Time after time I sent back Bethel work and the the place grew on me so my recommendation would be. Be A wet. It's GONNA be hot and sticky at pack accordingly, pack light clothes and try and real your day. So the schedule so I'm GONNA give you. With that in mind that we're GONNA try and keep you indoors during the midday sun and then enjoying these nice evening shorts and tee shirt whether evening. I've is arriving during the week because the the attractions will be quieter. So if you're coming in from the US most US flights coming in the morning, some European direct flights arrive in the morning as well. Some Poli time ones come in the afternoon. So settling, arrive, get your bearings adjusting the trying walk around a little bit to walk off the Jet Lag I. Think a a great way once you've done that it's the head of. The flower the gardens by the bay. Just the other side of the Marina SANS EXACTLY BEHIND MARINA BAY SANDS TO ICONIC DOMES that you'll recognize from Lupul skyline. and. The great because they're conditioned. Fussy. Let's just be honest the inside and it's a really interesting place to domes one. Is called the flouting and it's quite dry. When you go inside, it's woman it's dry and it's X. exhibiting flowers from all over the world. So it's specialized stuff that's from Southeast Asia they also have a nice a subtropical garden as well. So it's just nice to walk around there and adjust, but the real killer, the the thing that I absolutely love about Singapore it's my favorite is the cloud forest dime. super interesting. They've simulated under get picky about this I'm a joker for by training. They seem the cloud for th. So sort of what you've seen as like Costa Rica, they increase the temperature, increase the humidity, but kept relatively cool. So you get this two layers to it and you've got one layer, which is I think stimulating like a thousand foot and then the next up another five hundred feet. So you see in this one attraction to different attitudes of short. and. It's amazing. They've got waterfalls. It's misty. You get amazing views of the city because it's. Greenhouse. You can see the downtown from that and yes just a really interesting exhibit. One reason you can see the downtown from there is that it's multi level. So it's not it's not a flat dome you're climbing up into this I. thought it was great to I. Completely Agree With Your assessment that I've only been in the cloud dome I haven't been in the Flower Dome Safe. You'll shorten time just do the. For they do a combined ticket so you can get a ticket to both, and then if you get that, you also have access to something cool to tree books, which is why I'd recommend doing straight ASTA. So anybody who's familiar with David ATTENBOROUGH BBC a series will know that I mean it's it's a pretty gloomy story about the environment but I found it really interesting how he ended one of the series by saying he held up Singapore's the example, the shots of of these magic trees and that's without artificial. Singapore's created this this area on reclaimed land within the last ten years, which is why is expected to come on the show and talk about it is the last episode was about ten years ago said anyone hasn't been recently does lose more stuff to do and they've created this brand new downtown area and they've given it over completely to this garden because the advantage of being in the tropics is. Amazing chlorophyll and really great environment to grow that stuff. The Tree Wilkes they've laced together artificial materials and then allowed plants to grow up them. So they all human creative forest, which is super interesting David Asmara's just saying, Hey, this is the future of what cities should be not keeping each our cities but bringing them in being sensitive environment. On the treetop walks can elevate which takes you up quite high and you between these trees but then parade. Ten stories off I. Guess See have again a really nice view of the city a number recommending the doing this in the late afternoon time four PM onwards when it's cooler. So yeah, that's a super interesting attraction
Sole Survivor: The 1869 Yellow Jacket Silver Mine Fire
"April seventh eighteen, sixty, nine, the miners of gold hills yellow jacket mine said goodbye to their families and went to work like any other day. They had no idea that many of them wouldn't ever make it back home. Later that morning uncontrollable methane fire broke out at the minds eight hundred foot level collapsing timbers, and quickly spreading to neighbouring minds. The miners were trapped below with no chance for escape in what was probably the worst mining accident in Nevada history. Yeah. They used to have those methane lamps the did in the minds and they would go out if the methane levels got to a certain level and. Stuff like the candles. And Methane Cub Blam Yeah Oh. Yeah. I mean, I worry about that a lot too because I have a buddy. My best. But up in Idaho Jim Belton he works in a silver mine too and I always worry about them I. mean they have air blast it's. Very dangerous. I got nothing but mad respect for minors man yeah. It's hard work. Hammer Dangerous Oh. Yeah. Working deep any earth as a minor is a job with many hazards including poison gases, explosions collapses, floods, and fires to name a few. To minors like James Dunlavey, the risks were just part of the job. Dunlavey did not dwell on those dangers as he worked in the yellow jacket mine in Gold Hill Nevada, the mind and sister mineshafts were burrowed more than one thousand feet into the Earth as they extracted silver from the comstock lode. Each labyrinth of Mining Chamber was supported with heavy timbering in this tinderbox would minors lit their work with candles or lamps in the US blasting powder fractured the or for removal? The yellow jacket was a great silver producing property at the extreme southern end of the comstock lode. Nothing was more feared by gold and silver miners in a fire in a mine. As the pockets of or a cut away taken out cavities or chambers are created. The overhanging ledges of rocks are supported by Timbers to prevent the rock from caving following the tunnels are drifts reaching out for hundreds of feet in many directions from the shaft completely lined with beams and boards. Sometimes enormous cavities in a mine created by the removal of great pockets of or require eight, hundred and nine hundred thousand feet of timber that is. As Lot would yeah, it is. That's a that's a lot of flammable dangerous would had certainly is. Once again mad props because I have seen some of these things. You've seen it in movies I've seen it in real life. Yeah. It's some of these areas they are vast. Hoping for for your one hundred yards in some cases. And there's nothing supporting this rock, right? Right. I mean it's solid rock. It's holding together but man what is like caves but this is man made stuff see. So you know cave ins and stuff always dangerous. The shaft is face with heavy timbers links a deep and well-worked mind becomes a stupendous subterranean honeycomb of lumber. If a fire broke out any part of the lower levels of a deep mine, it would create a difficult situation for firefighters to get to any minors below level or beyond the point in the drift where fire occurs have little to no chance to survive. They are almost certainly killed before the fire reaches him by suffocation from gases or smoke that reached him I. Yep, and it Burns all the oxygen. Now, the chef exactly no suffocate drop them. It's bad. The comstock minds went down two to three thousand feet into the sides of Mount Davidson which increase the danger of fire would cause. So around eight am on Tuesday. April six, eighteen, sixty, nine. The nightshift miners were clocking out in the early days shift honors coming in. A careless minor perhaps tired from a long night or just excited to be heading home left a candle burning on a wall of timber. Some nine hundred feet deep in the mind which eventually set fire to supporting timbers food. The candle probably burned for hours and served as a life for the miners but having been left behind the flame eventually reached the pinewood on which it stood. The blaze started a chain reaction of disasters. Yeah. I bet it did Dunleavy who was working on the nine hundred foot level was alerted to the catastrophe when he heard the distinct crashing a falling rock. Debris tunnels forcing choking gases and dust into the yellow jacket in neighboring Kentucky Chefs. While running along the nine hundred foot level dunleavy spotted a wall of flame as he raced towards the main shaft, he gave the signal for fire, but the crackling of the Burn Pine Timbers was so loud that his warning shots were drowned out you. Dunleavy, remembered sending at the opening of the nine hundred foot level upon the yellow jacket shopped and heard the screams of minors on the levels below. 31. Dive Flags, EN-ROADS climate solution simulator, diving the Andrea Doria - burst 02
"Many of us go on die vacations to exotic spots and do a majority of our diving from a boat. I did a piece on boat diving etiquette back in February. And you can check out the archives if you're interested one of the things we don't have to worry about when we were diving from a boat is having a die flag that all changes if we are sure diving. You'RE GONNA have to fly or carry your own die flag now. I I learned about die. Flags in my patty open water diver course like most of us have and we actually used a die flag when we were doing our certification dives at Fort Weather. All in Jamestown Rhode Island. Now I went back to my original open water manual to look at what they covered. Yeah I still have that manual. That was before we had the electronic learning. Now we're all familiar with the red rectangular flag that has the white diagonal stripe but remember. There's also blue and white double tailed pennant. Or Alpha flag that signifies diving operations now according to Patty. The flag must be large enough to be seen from at least one hundred yards or meters away so to give you some perspective. Think about this. You're standing on the goal line of a football field and that you're able to see and more importantly identify that flag placed on the other goal. Line I want to cover a couple of other things about your die. Flat your flag is supposed to be flying so do accomplish. This usually have a wire across the flag to keep it extending now. You GotTa make sure that that wire is in place and there are no rips or tears in the flag the might make go limp remember. You're on that far goal line and it's Kinda hard to pick out the flag if it's not flying also. The flag needs to be seen by any boats in the area and should be at least three feet above the surface. Now that's absolutely necessary. When there are choppy seas the laws in your area may have special requirements. So you're going to have to check them out on the distances etc. But if they don't you WanNa stay within fifty feet of your diet. Flag and boats are supposed to stay one hundred two hundred feet away from die flat. Now I can tell you from experience and seeing it. That doesn't always happen. Boats don't usually respect. Sometimes they don't respect that one hundred two hundred foot rule. The die flags pretty simple is usually has a float and nears. This poll that goes through the middle of it runs through the the float and it usually has a counterweight on the bottom to keep the pole upright. Now you also have a line attached to it. That usually seventy five hundred feet normally polypropylene wrapped around the holder. Like I said it's pretty simple until you get into water you have to practice holding it leading out the line keeping the float above you not trailing way behind pulling the float underwater or getting tangled up in the line of another die flag or your gear. We've seen it all at our open waters in Jamestown. Also remember you need to hang onto your holder. We've seen that to die. Flags get away from people. Remember die. Flags are another important piece of your safety equipment and it's only safe. You know how to use it. So when you're on your shore dive be cognizant of what you're doing with that die flag practice with it and be safe with it.

"Thanks for fifteen hundred feet eighteen hundred feet. Yes there. But when the coolest ones one of my five jumps to jump avenue. Actual see forty-seven, which was the Tico Belle, which was one of the first aircraft that flew into Normandy. So that was pretty cool being in that plane that the same guy same soldiers than winning on that day. It's the same Sadeq line. They used the same one. There's an aircraft. So that was a pretty cool experience. When you think of the thousands of allied troops, that were jumping at the time, waves and waves it just incredible. You see video now, you see film that has been transferred to video, and it, it just literally just dotted, it almost looks like rain just pouring down. That's really got to be not only the jump, but everybody else around you just got to be kind of an overwhelming experience. It it is. And luckily we don't do that, too much, right? Eighty seconds. Still does that. That's just really dangerous. When you're jumping call jumping out of the door like that. And you're going so quickly. There's so many opportunities then to have really bad accent Mitterrand tangle moments you can. Get caught up actually hit the aircraft if you don't have a bad exit. So. That was that was very dangerous back then because none of those parachutes, you, you could maneuver at all except maybe change your body position for. You're gonna hit called it. He would slip instead of steering it, and yeah. With that many people in the air and people shoot, not you. That was not my would not be at my idea fun. Well, everything that happened on June five and June sixth, nineteen forty forty four. When you think about it, everything was dangerous. Those two days and subsequently the push into Germany throughout the subsequent months. So clearly nothing had ever been undertaken of that magnitude. And when you look back today and think really it was you had. No, there was only one possible outcome. We had to win. There was no alternative. There is now here's our fallback plan. It was we're we're winning. We're capturing it. And when you think of how fortified. The, the Atlantic wall, was by the Nazis be again, are our troops being shot at being mortared just as they stormed those beaches and jumped the night before. And then those gliders that they all that they came in on just really incredible. To this day seventy five years later, I watched the, the documentaries and I'm still in awe and amazement of what took place. Yeah. Brennan, what your great grandfather was actually a glider pilot. And it's really about those gliders. Right. Is that was a one way trip for those right? I mean they landed in some landed, you know and trees and some land and where they didn't intend to, but it did the trick. But really, just when you think about it, and the diversion, where they, they had patents, a fictitious Pattan army just everything that took place. And when you look at the weather the weather still wasn't great. It was people think. Oh, well that was there was an opening. It was a great opening. It was one of those deals where you're we're going to get perfect weather. You took what you got, and to this day when I've spoken to people that actually number of years ago that actually served in the armed forces, and stormed, the beaches or jump really their stories are incredible. And a lot of them don't really make a big deal out of it. But it was a big deal. You know, that's kind of weird because, you know, when we were growing up,.
