There are thousands of lonely turkeys trapped. An animal shelters all across the country. Who won't have a loving family to carve them up on thanksgiving. That is heartbreaking. Howard the shelters dealing with this problem. I spoke with humane society advocate. Michael beltran about the plight of shelter turkeys and everything has organization does to help find them a loving forever home here. He is when people are shopping. They want some perfect aesthetically pleasing turkey that oh no. Don't care that many of these turkeys have been raised in turkey mills. Everyone just wants the ideal turkey they see in pictures. Why do all these poor shelter. Turkeys come from are mostly are volunteers. Find him in the forest the fields wandering around without anyone to pluck or based him. It's so sad. Some of them are a little rough around the edges but they have such great personalities in a much much deeper flavor. That's so sad to hear. I've always gone store-bought with my thanksgiving turkey. In the past. I never realized the damage was doing. So many of us have leslie. We've been taught to desire the ideal designer turkey. And the adoption fees actually lower than the price of a purebred turkey in fact after talking with these lovely volunteers. I brought home. A few shelter. Birds vincenzo and muffin and it has been such a great experience. Oh yes. I saw the photos and they look. Doraville has caring for them in difficult. It certainly more work. They scream pretty loud and there is blood oliver my house but all that will be rewarded with the most succulent thanksgiving turkey. You've ever seen plus. Many shelters will even provide you with free herbs. And brining salt. When you adopt. Well thank you. That is a heart warming story and i know my kids will be so excited to bring home. Six constitutional amendments are on Florida's 2020 ballot
"Rhetoric from President Trump calling the elections integrity into question, claiming, for instance, that mail in voting is not secure, raises fears about a contested election. But an attorney who represented George W. Bush in the legal battle over Florida's president to recount in 2000 does not foresee problems. This will not be repeated 2000 and second. I don't anticipate any serious problems this year in Florida. And probably in any states. Barry Richard says Florida has made several changes no more hanging chads for one designed to reduce the risk of election disasters. Six proposed amendments to the state Constitution include one that would open Florida's primaries, Amendment three would create a single primary for all candidates of all parties. The top two finishers in that would go on to the general election. Supporters say it would force candidates to appeal to a wider audience. Those include a South Florida businessman Mike Fernandez. Who has put more than a million dollars into the campaign to get Amendment three passed Amendment Four on this year's ballot would require proposed amendments in future years to pass twice in two different elections to become part of the state constitution. But Kate McFall of the Humane Society of the United States who helped get an amendment passed in 2018, that band Greyhound racing in the state. Says it already takes 60% of voters to approve amendments. And that's challenge enough. If amendment forward pass. We have serious concerns that it would make it even more difficult if approved future proposed amendments that get Thesixty Percent in one election would go on the ballot for the next one for the second approval it would need where Florida's news I'm John Mc Weston.

Pandemic puppies: Demand for dogs skyrockets in quarantine
"Noticed so many people with new puppies. I? Don't know how new puppies have materialized in the massive numbers that suddenly I'm seeing. But there's even a term for it in the pet business right now, and they're called pandemic puppies. Americans Feeling more lonely and a lot of people lived part live in parts of the country where there been tight quarantines and all the rest have been tempted to get a pet to get a new puppy. Because of. The companionship that they offer and they can be absolutely great. But if you do get one. Know that the first place that any real pat lover would ask you to look is to look at one that is available with the rescue. Because not only will it save you a substantial amount of money? But it also finds a loving home. For a pet that. Got and well later. Turned out not to be such a good idea in their lives. And It is true that once you get a pet? You'RE GONNA pay some significant money in vet bills. I mean I feel like with our pets. Over the years we put a few veterinarians kids through college this point. It's. Can Get pretty expensive with what's involved in taking care of a pet so even if you get one. For free or nearly so from a rescue or a humane society or something like that no that. From that point. They're not as expensive as human children. But your puppy child will be a much more expensive addition to your house than you realize.

"The Humane Society of United States and the outcomes and Bruce is with us on the court our Jeffrey you have a quick question for me about paper bills or email bills here are her own and finding out that a lot of not so much built by credit card statement my checking account on their mutual fund statements are not always hanging up in my mailbox turning up in the the neighbors mailboxes or people there are a couple streets away and you know I have to worry about IT and what else what else can be done without him I've always been leery about having things over the internet but now I'm sure there were no words can be safer because I do you own a locking mailbox at my mail doesn't go in there and he goes to the neighbors and some of my neighbors are good but there's some down the road that I wouldn't feel comfortable he said she well I am sorry that your mail delivery has been so unreliable you know my preference is for your investment accounts that you continue to get paper statements because you want that paper trail could you ask you to print out online copy easier to receive statements online and print them all out so a lot of ink and paper but if you feel more comfortable having your credit cards come to you electronically and things like that that's okay but as far as investments I want the paper and I'm really sorry about the mail delivery being so inefficient Susie's with us on the Clark Howard show Susie I understand you have a suggestion for me yes I also wanted to say that many conversations in my house begin with me saying well Clark Howard says oh oh you're gonna make me a hated individual inside your house know that I'm I'm a fan and I like to take your advice and so I know you like to get cash as gifts and I do too I'm think it's practical that I'd like it to be more personal and we thought in it so lately I've been told how to fold origami Manny and so when they get a cat scan I pulled into a cute little shape I did a little shirt and trousers for a Christmas gift exchange with the head and then most recently I sent my daughter a little heart shaped twenty dollar bill for Valentine's day all right that's brilliant that is brilliant because so often people were turned off by how crass I sound about giving people cash instead of a gift card or giving them something that who knows if they're even gonna want it is canceling do whatever with but your idea of turning and into something really really cute is ingenious the Oregon me money and there's tons of infection that's pretty simple easy for you to say okay I'm gonna try it we're gonna fill me trying to Oregon me a dollar bill and it will be a short film comedy because I probably won't be able to pull it off but it is a great idea you have Susie.

"Humane Society hi there hi let's be kind to animals week yes your cat your cats right there is a lead picture cat I have been okay so lose should be and I you know just what connectors and stuff that you sent over and the first item on the list for talk about be kind to animals week is adopt don't shop at night and it just harkens me back to the days when I would go to the mall and and go to watch the puppies in the at the pet store or the kiddies at the pet store does that do they are they're still stores like that that's where people go and buy puppies and kitties with unfortunately yes and in Utah especially there's a change that has opened up for locations so it's it's the continual message that we want to stand out that when copies are sent to stores are generally taken from irresponsible breeders who are just letting their dogs breed continually to sell the puppies and make money or from puppy mills and a new destination a lot of poppies from out of state here to Utah consult these stores so we want owners can now when you're looking for Pat to research whether getting attacked from there are thousands of homeless pets in shelters and rescue groups that need home so if you choose to adopt him give a home to that animal verses producing more for profit in someone's pocket it definitely helps to reduce that population problem that we have with so many animals if you get up a path of poppy Acadie from the Humane Society you can be generally be assured that that the animal is is healthy and has a has a a good chance of being healthy as it continues to grow where as many I think many of those pet stores they don't care about that right Hey there's something in Utah it's called a pet lemon law and there's really no guarantee when you buy an animal that they're going to be healthy and it's a living animal but pet stores are not responsible if you have any health problems they won't do anything necessarily it's like you drove the car off the lot so to speak here they you talk me through Friday we do have you know a chance for you to bring the past back for a veterinarian take a look into what we can and it it just comes down to a lot of behavioral medical problems with in breeding animals that you see in pet stores and yes when you get just that much from the shelter a lot of times they're healthier and what we want to dispel that myth that shelter animals are all unwanted or abused or neglected they didn't come to the shelter by any fault of their own generally speaking it's an owner who just can no longer take care of their pad for them moving or have allergies and the animals of this runner cast are great family pets just looking for a second chance the new home and there are purebreds if you're looking for a specific breed well I mean let's say you can help you find that yeah you can wait I mean if you you could if you have something specific in mind the Humane Society I think may not have it at the moment but you could almost be sure that the that you will find the kind of animal dog or cat you want from the Humane Society if you just wait right absolutely they say across the country twenty five percent of the animal shelters are pure bred and that because some people that buy from a breeder and then they surrender but we do get tons of puppies and kitties and so if you are looking for a copy please don't buy one from the store wait until you see one come to a shelter because there will always be those letters when people don't spend either Pat and those loose litter come into shelter when we have to find homes for all of the animals so please just support local shelters and the Humane Society ties a non profit so everything that we do for the community to help the Pat comes from your support as well as we had the girls take that box of kittens out to the grocery store and they were sitting there all day and they didn't sell well in good way yeah don't do that yeah don't so and then be it be kind to animals week we always talk about spaying and neutering that's that's important but I like this other thing here just treat animals with compassion and respect yes a hard lesson for some people you know and it's something that's so important to start teaching your children are young and hi I don't know I think it was Gandhi if you believe some of the close I think he's the one that says that the greatness of a nation is judged by how we treat animals with the animals are dependent on us they're innocent and how we treat them and care for them and provide you know love and respect it says something about us and we truly believe that so it's just one of those things that if you model that behavior to your children and teach them that no living creatures who are just giving you unconditional love and not text you so much for us we know this so we will you know they deserve the same in return no no I'm I'm I'm I get kind of irritated with my cat well during the show one of my comes over and once once he finally wakes up well now it's time for attention so you want to build on his nose into my leg while I'm trying to do the show yeah and I help all paid him a little bit many keeps daughter you know and I finally do have to tell him you just have to go away now but if it showed him he yeah yeah go ahead if you are seeking new patients to their teaching your good lessons it's a I think my my frustration with him also amuses it makes me laugh at myself that I get frustrated with it because he's just a cat you know we don't sleep the thing that the fascinated me and I didn't learn this until just a few months ago I think it was the last time we had you on the show that the Humane Society of Utah Utah Humane Society is it does not receive any a state or federal funding and it's not a branch of the United States Humane Society it's it's own animal so to speak there were a local private five oh one C. three nonprofit organization just here in Utah and so we're here to provide care for you top hat and the name Humane Society is not trademarked it simply kind of a definition of what we do like the SPCA and so a lot of people if they think they're donating to the national Humane Society that helping us and it's a hard message to spread but no if you donate locally that's going to be best to help the local pack and everything we do comes from donations to win one more quick question somebody's asking in our text line when is the Humane Society going to start doing spay and neuter is again I don't are you go yes with the new changes that the governor has made we are doing spinners again we're just catching up on a lot of the appointments that we have to I'm still in the past month so we're we're going to start taking new appointments what is booked out quite a bit but if you do contact us you can get more information about that but thank goodness we have we have didn't they need or surgeries again which is very important for.

"We are with our good friend Daniel Bays from the humane society of the United States. Danielle is the senior analyst for Cat Protection and policy. And she's been a guest on the community cats podcast many many times. So if you WANNA find out about her background please go to the show notes at community. Cats PODCAST DOT COM and we'll have links to all the past episodes that she has been on but Danielle. Welcome to the show today. Thank you. I'm so happy to be here. So first and foremost of course. Podcasts HAVE TO BE NUMBER ONE IN MY mind. I want to congratulate you on a wonderful podcast episode for the Humane Society of the United States. New podcast which I believe is called humane voices. How did you enjoy being on their show? I liked it. It was a fun experience. 'cause I got to be there in person with the hosts and I made a lot of jokes but I don't know that they make the final episode so it was lovely. I love podcast with a big fan of them. Glad to see more and more of them talking about cadwell. I was impressed to see that. Has decided to put some resources into podcasting so welcome you and the other folks who are intimately involved in the podcast to the podcasting world for animal welfare. So it's great. I'm supportive of all folks doing tied casting the more for us to listen to the better off. We're all going to be so Danielle before we jump into talking about policy issues. What's going on around the country? I know you have expo coming up and I didn't know if you wanted to share some details about where it's going to be when it is and what's happening. Yeah it's going to be in San Antonio Texas this year. It's a first time breastfeeding your. I'm really excited at the Convention Center which is raped by the Alamo and I understand there's cat graves at the Alamo from their community cats. They've had there in the past so there's a nice little cat tourism going on but we have a whole cats track expos going around for. May Sixty nine and we have a whole track devoted to cats we're gonNA covers. Tr WE'RE GONNA COVER BEHAVIOR. We're GONNA cover kitten a lot of great stuff. It starts out with a whole day long session on cat behavior and that is going to be presented by Andrew. Doernen from town antibiotic Assira who you will have on your cat behavior day. Yes just happened once his ears. So they're gonNA talk about those really hard to adopt cats. Some of the older shy cats some of the older kittens that came in for maybe a feral colony or not quite social. But you can see the potential in them so they're gonNA do a really fun interactive day long learning lab about that and I'm super excited and then for the regular programming. We have several she. In our programs that are highlighted including the program in a Portland. A lot of people here about the Karen Kraushaar. Bob Salinger's clam in the cat wild if Nakano tour this time. Kieran and the Kenan their medical director are going to talk about their actual t in our program and how they work with the community. They're stay neuter clinic to really work on reducing the population of cats outside and then kind of another part of the country. We're GONNA hear from Nadia Novick. Who is from Mount Humane in Idaho about how they really engaged community in kind of do heads for lifestyle outreach program for tr? I've had a lot of great success. So that's kind of a much less populated rural area versus Portland which is more urban center. So there's a lot for everyone and then of course you're going to be doing. A couple of workshops unranked awesome community cat coordinator of so many more shelters are hiring people to focus on their community cap program. So what does that mean? What does that look like? And then the community Cap Pyramid which I really think is a new way that we need to be thinking. And I'm hoping that we'll have a lot of shelters attend that and really reassess the way that they're putting resources into cat issues so that's really exciting. I'm going to be doing more talk about policy with our state director. Brian Hackett from Jersey. He is more of a cat guy than I am. A Cat Lady so. I'm really excited for us to appear together and talk about how to get local ordinances. Get your elected officials involved. How to build coalitions locally so that should be really fun. Expect a lot of cap humor in Addis Well on Kittens the national kitten coalition will be. They're talking about a kittens Developmental Journey. And then the folks from the million cat challenge have a whole array of different shelters talking about some of the different kitten programs that they have found successful. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that we're also going to have Jackson Galaxy. The Camp Daddy talking about why we must be cat now and it's really important to focus on cats and cat behavior so it should be really really exciting program. I hope people will be able to come. Registration is open on site. So it's never too late to sign up that's fantastic. That's a great lineup. In thank you so much to each issue as for allowing me to share some. I fought around various topics. I am very passionate about the community Cap Pyramid and at HSS us. We're going to have some give aways. We're going to have some posters where you can put your own logo on the flyers and possibly some t shirts even so we have some grand plans to make sure that a Reno's with community kept pyramid is all about. I can't wait for it's GonNa be fun and I have actually never been to Texas other than I have flown through Dallas once. So it'll be great to see a part of Texas so for me. It'll be an adventure. So yeah let's move onto. Our policy are jeopardy game of policy to a certain degree but it seems like at this point in time there is one major hot topic going on all around the country with lots of positive movement and momentum. And I'd like you to share that with us today. Get your claws out. It's declining declining. Has Been An issue for folks in the cat community for a long time since last year when New York state became the first state in the US to enact a statewide ban on non therapeutic decline in is really taken off. And I WANNA give a shout out to the pop project which has been a huge advocate in this realm and really done so much education with the public with veterinarians with legislators met now are saying there should be a dozen states at least with declawed bills. This year and states. That were the bill had just kind of sat there last year are already moving. Having more hearings there's momentum. Legislators are coming forward wanting to introduce a bill on their own. It's not one of those issues where you have to go out and find legislators sponsor bills they are doing it proactively. Which is really exciting yet. Do you think that the reason there's this? Momentum and action is because of New York passing the ban legislatively. I think that that's kind of the tipping point. We seen policies for different entities evolve over time. There are a lot of medical organizations. That are supportive obviously are Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association has been opposed to decline along. The American Association of Feeling Practitioners is opposed to decline recently of seeing Banfield that hospitals which operate across the country in the petsmarts. Mostly they now are no longer doing decline so this is a major shift in our thinking about how cats used their claws and why they use their claws and why they should keep them and it's not just something that we can leave to individuals to make that decision one thing. That really surprised me when I was learning about. This is that the Avian May estimates about twenty. Five percent of cats are declawed. Wow that's amazing. I can't believe does that many cats. That are getting declawed anymore. Yeah I thought that was really surprising. It doesn't take that many that nearly still doing declined because if one veterinarian in a community is doing decline they can do all that business. It's not like if a whole bunch of the vets don't that it's going to have the same kind of reduction so if there's an actual law prohibiting at we're GonNa make more of a difference than simply through education. Unfortunately that's the case here so with regards to you know. There's the statewide initiative citywide initiatives and then association wide initiatives. If there's somebody out there who's really interested in getting involved in this issue finding out more how to help. Where would you recommend that they turn the? Us has a state director in nearly every state. And we don't actually have a person in a state. We have a person who covers the state so I would suggest anyone who's interested in following up with legislation on the state level even the local level to reach out to their hsen State Director. And you can reach them easily by email. Just say right the name of your state at Humane Society Dot. Org so you had mentioned when we were chatting before we hit the record button that you have a new community guide for municipal officials coming out. What is that about? Yeah this is a update and revision of publication. We've had alice managing community cats guide for elected municipal officials and it really outlines why municipalities should be concerned about humanity cats and what our policies looks at all the things that don't work that we often see a lot of times. When policymakers have a cat issue that get complaints in other knee? Jerk reaction is to remove the cats or band feeding of the cats. Is they think that will just solve the problem. So this document outlines those things that don't work but also the things that you're like June. Tr having programs to address keeping cats in homes in families. And why they should embrace those instead. It has some scientific information studies. It has data from different shelters to show. How doing these humane programs have reduced complaints reduced cats coming into shelters. So it's kind of like your one stop guide to hand to your legislators to help them understand the issue so it's been out of print for about a year. We've done some updating and revising it at its new information and it is going to be hot off the presses when the show airs excellent. We'll make sure we get linked to that in the show notes along with the other guy that you are well known for which is the return to field guide that you did with Brian and visit with Karen or just Bryan. "Although when I think of exotic this isn't exactly would I think of it is unique and different. We're talking about the increase in people who are adopting miniature donkeys. They're so small for a donkey but Pretty much about the same size as a big dog and those who own and even show these mini donkeys say. They are really smart and very responsive to humans which in. Us kind of like a dog. That's why we love our dog so much they wanna be near you in. These donkeys are the same way. One man who has thirty of the miniature donkeys says? He's trained a lot of different breeds of dogs and young horses but he says the donkeys. These mini ones are a lot more like training a dog than they are like a horse but still he does concede house. Training a mini donkey is virtually impossible saying that He's found that when they need to potty they just do it wherever they are or horse going down the parade right. Excuse ME EVERYBODY. I have to write in the living room there. Yeah so they don't that for that reason they don't recommend them in the house but the bigger issue bigger than potty training is they. Are you know equine? They are herd animals. So they say you really need to either to donkey's or a donkey. And a horse or those mini donkeys would become very very lonely one breeder of them says she is even turned down potential adopters that do not already have at least one herd animal already in their home. The ultimate fate of that steer in that viral video from Texas. Did you see that one This dear who escaped from a slaughterhouse earlier this month. His fate is still up in the air. Although one rescue group says Baby Huey that's what they've named him he's got his own. Hashtag Baby Huey that he may now be kept by the owners of the slaughterhouse. And they're thinking about keeping him as a family pet but the rowdy girls sanctuary farm in Texas has informed that family that if they decide they don't want maybe anymore they need to tell the sanctuary so that they can go ahead and make other arrangements that would allow baby huey to live out his life without fear of being sent back to a slaughterhouse again. That was wild yes. The world's first privately owned animal terminal and Quarantine facility incredible. It is opened up at John. F Kennedy International Airport in New York. It's called they call it the ARC. It's a Jain Norma's sixty five million dollar fourteen acre civility. That's huge but still it's been so professionally done and well thought out. They say that even at that size that it's cozy enough or a tiny kitten but spacious enough even for Clyde steel if you want the arc caters to travellers who send their animals as cargo on flights but they do not want them hanging out and attended say in the holding area either before or after a trip you know where so many animals you know. Get lost or die. From the heat and everything companion animals will be staying at the pet oasis which is part of the ARC huge complex and they welcome pets arriving departing or pets. Who are just in between flights in that starts at about one hundred twenty five bucks before takeoff. You can drop off your pets. And then they get the animal ready they give them a preflight walk and they check the crate for airline compliance and then the staff will then transport the pet to the plane. You know so. There's always a human with your pet. And then they coordinate with the airline on the exact departure time if there are any delays and things like that to minimize the way to the boarding area. Now for arrivals imagine that you're in traffic and you can't get there and you've got you know some for some reason here. Pet is flying by itself. The staff picks up the pet from the airplane and they handle all of the customs and paperwork requirements and then once they get over to the pedal ACIS there they get their food. They get a bath and brushed plus they potty breaks in a grassy area and pet parents can also receive foot. Oh updates of their pets journey but if by chance you happen to have a furry friend of a larger variety the ARC also has a dedicated area for horses and even horse quarantining and and for those who travel with them like their jockeys grooms and there's also a specialized habitat gesture birds of all kinds and they say that a vet clinic is also in the works there as is a paradise for pause in. If you don't know what that is. It's a luxury pet resort that is already operating in a few cities near the big airports mostly in Chicago Denver in Dallas Fort. Worth I. I've heard about. Those boy is really amazing. How we are now accommodating animals in and out of the city the major cities about time. Lucie is there a problem was that Lucy promised me a trip to Hawaii yes that's Lucy anyway. I just thought that was fantastic. I I love when things are so well planned and things because what we had at airports in the past several decades has clearly not been working or for the benefit of the animals that was just to get them from point. Eight point being sometimes. Even that didn't happen. I'm Laurie Brooks get more breaking news anytime at animal. Radio DOT COM..

"Now if you haven't it's great because if there's a recall or any news that really affects you and your animals you'll get it I through your notifications on your your phone your smartphone. I still have one of those. Flip phones upgrading. has really. Oh my God I know it's I don't even know how to work those anymore. I you know things confuse me. Like Electron confuse me in phones especially so I'm happy with it. You don't have your old dial phone. It's well I would if I could would. It's it's actually more costly now. Have a dial phone or a landline. Ones they want you to get one cheaper if you get the landline. And who needs it? I mean how can I text from a landline at a restaurant? That's what I want to know. Because that's what you do at restaurants you know when you go out with a lot of people you just everybody your phone. Yeah don't even talk to each with my little flip phone. I'm like looking around at everyone at the dinner table. Like trying to start some conversation but they're all engaged in their phones. Oh Yeah and then we went out to dinner the other night and there's a computer right there on the table that you pay your bill from God forbid that you would wanNA play the Trivia. You would have to pay an extra two dollars to kids. I thought I'll play the kids trivia. That's gotTa be free. They always do everything to make the kids happy. Oh guilty I played that before. Got The bill for whoops anyway So it appears that in just a few minutes we may be talking to Bob. Barker for his fifteenth appearance here on Animal Radio. Find Out in just a couple of seconds right here a lorry. What are you working on over there in the newsroom? Well we've got something new happening in the world of exotic pets but this isn't your kind of water tropical pat. This is more of a unique new pet. But they're calling it exotic and we'll tell you what it is and it's supposedly very very difficult to potty train this if not impossible. Don't get your hopes up. Okay okay. I'm not even potty trained yet okay. So let's go to the phones and another one for Doc. We have ron on the phone. Hi Ron Welcome to the show. What's going on from Jock lab named Dolly? She's chewing on her pads on the bottom of our feet right now or two front paws. Go ahead well. If this is something where it just happened all of a sudden the first thing I look at it as if there's been some reason activity that's kind of gone over the edge. Some dogs will just be especially labs. They'll be a little bit anxious in Overdo it when it comes to activities like retrieving running so if there's been some physical injury where she sustained that then We look at bandaging and getting her off her feet and some aren't are for a while. Now there are certainly dogs that will get some cracked pads and for various different reasons. Some of them can be some Metabolic problems inside the body And Other Times. It's just a matter of some dry skin or what. We call hyper carrots. Hostess so I it really would be something. I would advise to have a vet their eyeballs just so that we could make that distinction because there are definitely some really freaky looking foot pads in older dogs. Where the the foot pad actually grows off to the side. It gets all kind of briskly looking and it can have all these fissures and cracks in it and by itself that isn't usually a problem So the fact that she's bothering it and especially if we see and using her bleeding then you know this is something we really need to get a look at it and with an older girl of thirteen. Some of those metabolic problems can come to the surface and we might want to. You know evaluate that a bit further. Oh Gosh is what this is all of a sudden. I'm a truck driver choosing truck all the time so okay. It causes a problem because they're different places all the time and she's walking with all the time and that's hot sometimes the Yea In this if this would be something where You know it sounds silly in Hallo probably laugh at me but our our dog. Booties and dog. Socks that have little bits of skid pads on the bottom so it is a matter of your her feeder sensitive and we're not able to get to a vet to do bandaging some of those little socks in The booties it. Takes a little time to get amused that knack limited to that but that might be a protective device that you could use especially when you're on the road to just keep those feet from really getting irritated and yes. I would put those on boss. I think that's totally fine. There's nothing wrong with it. They're cute. I actually do think when you start putting on the dresses with the frills that I get a little After the booties are great. And I know that lady bug actually has little. Booties Corner. So Cute Ron. I hope that helps you out. Buddy thank you very much. By the way we do follow ups. I don't think there's any other radio show that does follow ups. If you if you have issues still are solution. Doesn't.

"Our pets. This is animal radio featuring veterinarian. Dr Debbie White Groomer. Joey Villani news director. Lorie Brooks and now from the Red Barn Studios here your host halladay rooms and Judy Francis this just a few minutes. We are going to have Bob. Barker on for his fifteenth appearance here on Animal Radio and over the sixteen years or so that he's been coming on almost on a yearly basis. He's talked about the circus and really shutting down the circus and the elephants that are shouldn't be performing in the circus. He's even gone as far as flying. Some of these elephants out of these precarious situations and to shelters and sanctuaries across the country. He's also really is pretty cool. He's also been very involved with trying to see world To Shutter Their Wail Act. And they have done that so we have a lot of things to celebrate a lot of things to talk about. And he's ninety three years old Gosh still doing this. Wow and Quentin ladies. Man's till I understand. He also has he might remember. He brought to our attention the situation with the American Humane Association and that Dustin Hoffman Movie. Hbo Movie About Three Years Ago. Where the humane association was onset and gave them their credentials. You know the No animals were harmed in the making this movie credentials little certification at the end of the movie yet. There was a horse that was harmed during that movie. A Horse Tie. Didn't I think so? Although I don't know that I just know that Bob Barker is not a big fan of the Ahe so I wanna ask him about a dog's purpose this movie and the whole controversy with the German Shepherd Hercules the German shepherd on that set. So that's on the way in just a few minutes What are you working on over there? Laurie well one state has just opened up this huge new expensive facility. Econom- sixty five million dollars to build this. Yeah on fourteen acres and it's all about animals. You know when I asked for a tease. You really do. Give a tease. I try to deliver how okay. Let's go to the phones. Let's take one for Dr Debbie. We HAVE BILL ON LINE three high bill. How're you doing pretty good? Where are you calling from today? Call New York New York okay. What's going on with your animal. Doctor Debbie right here Doctor have three year old English springer and she's getting a habit of eating Deng Eating Doug Dengue or other Dobbs Dung. I have another animal or another dog too and she you know they've play together and stay in the pen and let him out and they'll run around and Dogle. My Springer will start that habit which I was wondering how to break that. Yeah it's it's a lovely Deng behavior and if we're being confined in a now. Is this a dog? Kennel like a fenced-in Kennel or crate after crate Kennel okay. Alrighty as far as in I'm taking it she's only eating the other dogs pooper. She eating her own this. Well I I don't know I cleaned up and it's I know she's eating stuff out there and she comes in and and just just dengue breath. So I know okay. Yeah well I mean the reasons for. Why dogs do this. The honest truth is we have a lot of theories but nobody really knows the absolute certain 'cause A Lotta Times. We kind of look back at. How puppies are when they develop and when the with mom. The mother dog actually licks their urogenital area. So they ingest their feces and their urine and some people feel that this can be kind of a mimic behavior that just kind of sets powder and then they just don't get out of other times. You know we talk about the fad or the protein content in the stool and some dogs are really attracted to things like rabbit. Poop feces different animal feces. Because there's different compounds enzymes proteins in there that may be somewhat attractive and it's crazy to think that poop tastes good but you know what it really does to some animals so in some ways when you have a positive reinforcement for behaviors. Hard to stop it because they just enjoy it now. Some of the things we need to do when we have a dog that is eating. Poop is one. We need to take away the opportunity where they can get into that so that means we have to pick up that poop as soon as it is passed. We don't want to leave that. Stool left out in their environment where they can get around that in ingest it. The second thing is that we want to Not Make a big deal about it when you do. Catch them in the act and just just like a kid that smacks around his brother or sister for attention because his parents yell at him dogs will eat poop because they love to hear us yell screen throw things sabotage of it and that actually again is a positive reward for that behavior because they just got you off the couch and they get your attention and now you're paying attention to them so you want to make sure that you don't react to that in that way but to give them some kind of alternate thing to do so if a dog is trained to pick up stool you know squeaky toy a tennis ball something you can throw in the other way. That is going to get their attention. Divert them from the stool. Do not make a big deal out of it. Do not try to discipline them. Make them hold the stool in their mouth or say bad dog. That's not going to help at all. And then also we went to look at just keeping these guys from being bored and anxious so when they do come on they can. All we got to divert that activity in energy. Get them running. Get them doing something. So that They don't turn look. See that stool right there in like okay. That's a great place. I'm going to go for that. So it's kind of a combination of all these things and you know you can do some of the things where people will put Cayenne pepper on the poop and so forth but I think the time you spend walking around with that little Tabasco bottle addressing those. Yeah the pilots you might as well Work on avoidance keeping that stool out of the environment. So yeah and they're you know definitely some people will say use MSG at it to the poop or edit to the dog that is passing the POOP. And there's a lot of deterrence that they sell on the market so those things can help but by themselves they won't solve the she kinda gotta get the heart of all of these behaviors and and and getting your like. Vlade would say. Get the dog job something to do. And then really Keep the opportunity to minimum. Clean clean up themselves. But Hey I like that idea. It's just that opposable thumb thing they can't quite get that scooper going all your doc bill for your call it. I believe we have John the phone. Hi John. How you doing very good. Where are you calling from? I've been at the moment right now. So if I lose you I do apologize. I'm up in the mountains. Well what's up with your pets today? I have a five and a half year old overman female sway. We've had her since on newborn The problem we're having is we get our groomed once a month and within a week later she starts to smell like spock to an old talk. Yeah I was just wondering if it's something. She's lacking in her diet. Is this something that we can do to Change Dad or is that just a normal thing okay? So she's not sleeping with dirty socks or anything we she just you know Actually we we better a really nice doggy bag. She has all that We alternate we have too bad for so we alternate and wash him and she didn't clean bed So I guess. What does her skin look like? Does she have any kind of Hair loss weariness craziness Team when you touch your Any particular part of her body does she. Smells at all over all over and You know my right. There's a lot of entertaining Two hundred and when we had our you know where it's Everybody's looking at each other stocks and only stinks muskie's now though in it we're not sure what the what the cure for that is. Well I think the first thing that I would look at is Anytime we have a bad odor. We can't find a 'cause I do actually like to get really close to pet and believe it or not. I like to get some samples from the skin and look because somehow it's going to have problems with yeast infections. We can get a staph infections or types of bacterial infections. arts some dogs and Dobermans kind of fit into that where they can have problems with their oil glands and their skin where they can have an excess production of some of these oils for some pets so so. That's a possibility as well. But I would definitely say we'd want to do a test called an impression smear where we look at all. The Skin. Surface under the microscope look for any organisms. Because I I've definitely had dogs. We've had to put on medicated. Shampoos and types of medications to help correct those things and then there's always that certain that might even have some. Weirdo condition like a condition called suspicious at night as which creates a smelly. Greasy coat So I would definitely say that's where I would be going with things Get some samples and make sure we're checking things like teeth in in the Glance too because those are really potent sources of odor from dogs. But if you're describing mortar that kind of wet sock kind of smell than I like to check for. Yeast and yeast is a pretty stinky. Dog Actually are Where she gets groomed out as a really well known place and they do the anal gland and so we know that's not a problem We got that much from our groomer. And those teeth are actually very very white Give us a clearer. Rawhide and that keeps them really clean What she does a lot. I don't know maybe something new to whether it's skin. Yeah Yeah I would definitely say that will be worthwhile because it's hard to say. Let me just tell you this shampoo or that championship A really would be individualized thing that we'd want to find out what's going on on her skin surface and it's such a simple type of test but it can really give us oodles of information on what's growing or what's going on and your baby's skin so I would definitely pick up that phone and lineup that visit with your veterinarian. Because I think we can probably do things to help her out in in a lot of different avenues with shampoos and and actually sometimes we can over shampoo too so that can actually make some conditions worse. So let's get to the vet and find out what we're scratching about and what's going on. This is Dr Debbie with animal radio. We are here to take your calls. "Villani news director. Lorie Brooks and now from the Red Barn Studios here are your host Hal Abrahams and Judy Francis. Today he is back for his fifteenth appearance on Animal Radio. If you're a regular listener you already know who that is. That would be Mr Bob Barker. He is an amazing gentlemen. How old is he now? I think he's what ninety three ninety sharp I admire him for. You know staying active and up with his his personal causes. I I think that's remarkable and I. I hope to be of that position at his age. Young Kid and I don't know if he's still has any animals. I know he had rabbits. So we'll have to ask you about that but either usually a rabbit next to him on every phone call. We'll find out. I know they were getting up there in rabbit ears. How long does it rub? It usually live so I see him living eight to ten even twelve years. Sometimes oh prolific guys to let them roam free on the whole second floor and they would get into the TV and the cables lows. He didn't really care. I mean now. The second was further. Abbott for the rabbits absolutely But I will take a couple of your calls now and they will do some news at the bottom of the hour. Laurie what are you working on when you leave the House? I know I leave you know music or TV show on for my pets and there is a it turns out after this new research. That was released this week. One kind of music is a couple of times they don't like this one. Especially stresses dogs out who? I hope it's not the music leave. You know. Leave on classical music when I leave the house and I think that it would be calling for them. It's calming for me but we'll find out with a brand new research that Lori has done really interesting okay. We ready to go to the phones. Let's do it. Yes that's go. Hi Diane how are you? I'm fine how are you today? Good where you calling from Orlando Florida Orlando Okay. How can we help you? I found kitten female kitten and we brought her in the house because it was winter time both winter for Florida and she stayed here for a while. Actually she's living here now with Minter Spear Kitty Spirit. Kitty has swollen glands. It feel like it looked like the mumps do about it okay. So she's about how old right now then while she had her first heat so I figured she might be about six or seven months old. Okay and is she feeling sickly in any way no? She's she's very healthy she's active. She bounces around. Okay good okay. Well we have swollen lymph nodes especially in the neck area. A couple of things do come to mind One of the first things I think of in Kittens of about the ages between three and seven months of age if they can get a kind of strep infection and it's called juvenile streptococcal lymphatic night as if that's not a mouthful and then I don't know but the basically it starts as a strep infection that they get in the tonsils and it works its way to the lymph nodes in the neck so that certainly could be possibility there among other things so other things in kittens that will cause lymph nodes to be enlarged can be some viral diseases like feeling leukemia. We can also see bacterial infections Like Bartonella which are associated with cat scratch fever so any of these things I think are going to really justify trip for your veterinarian. So we can get her checked out and that might be something as I starting with getting her viral tested as well as you know getting a sample from the lymph node because that can tell us a lot there but for a lot of those things if we're not dealing with viral thing and we're talking about getting antibiotics and getting her treated appropriately so that that I feel pretty favourable about that and then we need to get this Gal Fade my goodness oh I know. I thought she was an older cat when I first brought around I went to give her some friends because they wanted to see her for the weekends. And when I did that she went into heat. And my says this is a kitten. This is not a cat. Yeah so definitely so Great that you took her in but yeah let's get her into the vet and we can all that taken care of pretty easily if it is what I think. It is all right. Thanks pave. Hey how you doing good? How are you doing today? What can we do for you? Well I was wondering if If there's a way to tell if my dog is a perfect way overweight for underweight that's a great question. Dave and I think you for asking that because I think a Lotta Times as pet owners. We think we know. Our dogs are in good weight and the actual truth is in the vast majority of the cases in my patients. They're actually overweight. So yeah and I like to share a factoid here because according to recent studies in dogs in the US thirty five to forty percent of jobs are overweight or obese. That's all that's all. That's a lot and counts are similar there about twenty five to thirty five percent of. Us cats are obese or overweight so this is a huge number and that does have implications. So I'm so glad that you bring this up because we know that obesity is going to cause our paths to have increased rates of problems like diabetes Arthritis Orthopedic Issues Skin Infections. Believe it or not. Many people are surprised by that because that excess skin from being overweight can actually be making more prone to non allergy type. You know skin infections. So it's a big issue so the number one thing that I would say is communicate with your veterinarian in our office every time we see a patient we do what we call a body condition score so we take a pets. Wait but we all also score their body condition and there's kind of two different scales for that one to five or one to nine of the two different scales but basically helps put a number at where your pets condition is so that we can measure that between different visits and different doctors potentially So that's something you can look that up online. There's one made by Sharinau but you can go to pretty much anywhere on the Internet and find a body condition score we can look at its charge and it gives the view usually from the side and from the top down. 'cause there's different ways we look at our pets. We're basically looking to see if they have a nice kind of like an hour. Glass glass figure for a pet so we want to see a little bit of tucked up in the Kind of in the abdomen area A little bit taper there. We don't WanNa see a potato shape and certainly we don't want to see kind of the torpedo shaped head of the rounded shape. So that's kind of crazy because my dog is like a tubular but she's a rottweiler shepherd. Mix So when you work at it from the top she's tubular. You look from the bottom. There's like a cut of where the back legs are but she seems very DC but strong in not overweight. You can't potentially gut at all. Yeah and I think I would probably have to see her because abnormal perfect way dog which Mike category three out of five when we actually put her hands on the ribs. We should feel ribs There may be a little bit of some shoe covering that but we actually do feel ribs and we also WANNA see that. Tuck up in the on the flank from the side And then if you're standing above we want to see a little bit of a tuck between the chest and the hips. There should be a narrowing there so if we're straight like a rectangular then I'm GonNa probably put your dog at four out of five just from what you're describing which means we're already in the overweight category so and that's where. I think you know getting a veterinary assessment is helpful And A LOT OF FOLKS. Tell me what number. How much should my pet way? And it's never about the number just like with people we hate to like you know. Label PAT says being overweight. Because they're over thirty five pounds or forty five pounds when the breed standard says they should be a different weight But the body condition score really is going to be very important for you to help figure that out in know how to alter your feedings Because that's the next step we're talk about is how to What kind of strategies do we use to just trim off a little bit of weight and this is what I do for my dog? So I I can tell you. experienced over all the years the amount of food that a pet food manufacturer tells you on the bag to feed his we over estimated. It is yes. Yes by far and I have people come in all the time and say oh you know my you know seventy five pound dog. I'm feeding you know six cups a day and that's how much the food manufacturer says and I'll be like you know what no are. They just putting that other label to sell more dog food the reason that the amounts that I think that there's a discrepancy whether or not we believe they're trying to sell more food or not. I don't know but I do believe that. We overestimate a pets. Metabolic activity. So what are they doing during the day Many pets hanging around the house. Sit on the couch bark at the mailman and they don't necessarily do a lot So if they're out doing athletic sports during running their hunting they're doing very vigorous activity. You may need to feed more of that higher. End of the feeding amount on bag dog food but The dog doesn't do that or goes for a walk twice a week or three times. A week is not getting that same level of physical activity that we might be expecting so every day count. You know more than me running to the television for the mailman. That's a good one hundred calories.
